Henstone wins in Gin Guide Awards
Henstone Distillery’s lightly oak aged Rosé Gin has won ‘Best in Britain 2023’ in the prestigious Gin Guide Awards. Their London Dry and Navy were also winners, and they took home the ‘Distillery of the Year 2023’ award too.
Hundreds of gins from over 35 countries around the world took part in The Gin Guide Awards 2023. Categories are based on the most popular styles of gin and their countries of production, as well as Design and Branding and Environmental Sustainability categories.
The winners are selected through a rigorous blind tasting process conducted by an esteemed panel of distinguished gin experts, including distillers, spirits buyers for retailers, authors, and mixologists. Each gin’s appearance, aroma, flavour, mouthfeel, finish and overall quality are assessed to determine the highest scoring gins, based purely on the spirit itself and with no influence from branding, marketing or the country of origin.
Chris Toller, Co-Founder and Director of Henstone Distillery said, “Our Rosé Gin has been in production for nearly five years and for it now to win Best in Britain is amazing! We are all so proud that we have achieved this in such a crowded category. Also, for our distillery, based in rural Shropshire, to win Distillery of the Year against stiff international competition is the icing on the cake.”
Hope House Cycle Challenge returns for 2023
Hundreds of cyclists will once again be using pedal power to raise money as the Hope House Cycle Challenge returns for 2023.
The challenge on Sunday 6 August will see cyclists take on one of two routes from Hope House Children’s Hospice in Oswestry heading on a 56-mile route around Lake Vyrnwy or a 70-mile journey to Lake Bala, finishing back up at the hospice.
The longer Lake Bala route takes in Bwlch y Groes – one of the highest public road mountain passes in Wales with a summit altitude of 545 metres.
Last year the Cycle Challenge raised more than £11,000 and with cyclists already signing up in their droves this year’s event is shaping up to be another success.
Fundraiser Bekki Fardoe said, “It’s going to be great to see all of our riders again here at Hope House and out on the route.
“We are so grateful to our sponsors Recycling Group UK, for their incredible support in helping us to put on such an amazing event which will raise vital money to support children and families that need care at our hospices.
“The Cycle Challenge is one of our most popular events, so if you want to take part and make sure you get your hands on one of our incredible medals then please do sign up early to avoid disappointment and take advantage of the early bird fee of £27.50. Sign-up on the day will be £35, subject to availability.

Oswestry Archers plan 24-hour shoot
From midday 7 July to midday 8 July, the Oswestry Archers are holding a 24-hour non-stop archery event to fundraise for two charities dear to Club Secretary, Robert Batts.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Robert’s daughter was diagnosed with MS a few years ago, which has affected her life considerably in many ways. This is a horrible condition that attacks the nervous system, and can be life threatening, and at present there is no cure.
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Explaining why he is supporting Alder Hey, Robert said, “I currently coach an 11-year-old girl, who has severe Epilepsy and was diagnosed with this condition when she was 7 months old. She can have seizures every day of

the week and sometimes more than one in a day. Her schooling is disrupted due to seizures and other than archery, which she can cope with in small sessions, she finds it really hard to do other sports and things in life that other children do. Alder Hey have been brilliant with her over the years and are now looking at doing a major brain operation on her to try and alleviate the symptoms.
“We wish to raise as much money as we possibly can for these two really deserving charities, so they can continue with the brilliant work they do.”

Oswestry Community Games 2023
On 11 June, Oswestry Community Games more than met organisers’ expectations and over 1000 people of all ages turned up to enjoy the free activities in Cae Glas Park, provided by diverse local organisations
covering sports and dance. The live music was once again provided by the Bartells, who lived up to their growing reputation.
James Manford, Lead Organiser said, “It was a delight to be in our beautiful park today. Many thanks go to all our local sponsors – Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry BID, Oswestry Sports Forum, Shropshire Rural Housing Association Bunning Gas and DRE Accountants. Thank you to all the club volunteers who have given their time today so willingly, and to David Davies who was again in fine form as our MC for the day.
I would also like to thank Andy Hunt from Oswestry Photographic Society for undertaking his role, to Mal Molloy for his filmmaking, our Town Crier Phil Brown and to Sue Cameron Head Park keeper and her team for making the park again look so good and a relaxing place to be. Thanks go to my colleagues Kelly
Clarke and Clive Knight, who worked tirelessly throughout the year to help me make this great community event happen again.”
Guest of Honour Kat Driscoll, World and European Gold Medallist in Trampolining, threw herself enthusiastically into her role trying out a range of activities that she had not tried before as well as talking to many people.
Many thanks to our Commonwealth Games Ambassadors, and local volunteers who played a key role helping with the running of the Games. including overseeing the raffle and charity boxes in support of Kat’s chosen charity “Stroke Association”.

Salon XV Oswestry
Sam (35) and Martyn (39) LewisEvans are both partners in life and for the last 14 months are now partners in business and what a whirlwind those 14 months have been.
Having both been in the industry for over 20 years, they have worked for some of the top hair franchises in not only Shropshire, but the country.
Sam worked for It&ly Hair Fashion, Vidal Sassoon and then for various franchises of Toni & Guy for 17 years, starting in Shrewsbury with a short stint in Telford and as a manager for the Oswestry branch for 14 years.
Martyn did his training with Francesco Group and once qualified, worked for Martanne Hairdressing. Martyn worked for the Wow franchise in Wolverhampton and then went back to his hairdressing roots to work for Francesco Group Telford, for 5 years as their Technical Director and then for 5 years as a manager at Black Orchid Salon - a premium Telford salon.
Both Martyn and Sam are Wella Master Colour Experts. They also specialise in smoothing treatments, excessively curly hair, multiple aspects of balayage techniques and Sam is an artist when it comes to wedding hair and up dos.

Rob Owen’s Story
I started Slimming World at the beginning of January this year. My weight has fluctuated up and down all my adult life. I’ve never been comfortable with it or my overall physical health and disliked seeing myself in any family photos. This also led to a deterioration in my own mental wellbeing, and I struggled to like the person I was.
I joined Oswestry Slimming World, and I learned about the unlimited amounts of food you could eat throughout the day (including pasta which was a shock) and how to portion your plate correctly with the right quantity of vegetables. I realised the easy sauces I had been using were just full of sugars and high in calories, so I used the Slimming World app on my whole food cupboard and donated much of it soon after.
I began cooking from scratch using many of the delicious recipes on the app and found the group sessions inspiring, as everyone talks about the recipes they’ve tried. I’ve fallen in love with cooking and won a competition to make your own dish.
After five months I’m about to reach my initial target weight having lost three stone. I’ve recently completed a night walk up Snowdon, been voted ‘Man of the Year’ by my walking group and have never felt so good;
both physically and mentally. I’m about to take on the Yorkshire 3-Peaks challenge to raise money for the Men Walking and Talking group. Something which I’ve wanted to do for years but never been able to.
When you join Slimming World, our consultant, Claire, is brilliant and always on hand. You have a huge network of group members there to inspire you, to be with you through your successes and support you. I feel personally after years of struggling with myself, that I’m smashing 2023 and much of that is thanks to Claire and the rest of the Oswestry Slimming World members.

Oswestry Town Council
Welcome to the 2023 Oswestry Town Council review. 2022/2023 has been a historic year and we have overcome many challenges to successfully deliver our objectives.
Message from the outgoing Mayor Cllr Jay Moore
This Civic Year has been truly historic. Not only have we all been fighting our way back to some semblance of normality following the pandemic, but it has been a monumental year for our country. The civic year began with the celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I represented our town during Operation London Bridge following the passing of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and my final duty as Mayor was to preside over the celebrations of the Coronation of King Charles III.
I think I’ve always had a different view as to what a Mayor should be. Our role is not to stand in the spotlight, but to hold it and shine the light on those around us. My mayoral year couldn’t be mine at all, it needed to belong to the community, and I really tried my best to make sure they had it.
I introduced a new Community Champions‘ program to recognise some of Oswestry’s brightest stars:- the late great Geoff Moore; Gary and Kelly Clarke; Mr Lenny Worthing; and the Connect For Life team.
Finally, I need to thank my family, Poppy, and Alfie. Poppy has taken on an incredible amount to allow me to be the Mayor this year. If you feel like my time as Mayor has been a success, it is Poppy who deserves the credit. Many people have been kind to me during the year and made me and my family feel very welcome. I’m so proud to have been your Mayor and I thank you all for your support.
Annual Report
Oswestry is one of over 8,500 town and parish councils in England and Wales. There are 230 in Shropshire including Telford and Wrekin, all with the same legal powers available to them as Oswestry Town Council. We can only do what legislation requires or permits us to do and whilst this can be frustrating for councillors, confusing for the public and challenging for council staff, we can still achieve many things for and with our community. It means we must find different ways of delivering initiatives and work with partners, influence other bodies and help valuable community organisations and individuals through grants and donations.
Everyone will have a different view of what a successful Town Council looks like. Here in Oswestry, we are proud to have delivered a number of important projects during 2022/23.

REVIEW OF 2022-2023
Town Centre
The High Street Heritage Action Zone Project (HSHAZ) has seen a number of shop fronts improved in the town. Cross Street in particular has seen a great transformation. The new Designs In Mind shop front has made a big difference and the former Burtons building (the Little Mall) will soon emerge from behind the scaffolding. This project has been supported by Oswestry Town Council using the Smithfield Windfall Capital Receipt and delivered in partnership with Shropshire Council, Oswestry BID and Historic England.
HSHAZ has seen buildings repurposed, alleyways made more attractive and user friendly and there is more to come. The HSHAZ scheme has developed a new festival, ‘Love Oswestry’ - a celebration of Oswestry arts, culture and heritage and will help with the Town Council’s purchase and conservation of Llwyd Mansion later this year. There is no doubt that there are challenges on the high street for both traders and residents, however there is a lot to be optimistic
about. Resolving Church Street will make a significant difference and we are encouraging Shropshire Council to remove some of the barriers. Plans for Festival Square have been drawn up and we are hoping to extend and build on the shop front scheme through to 2025.
We have highlighted the HSHAZ program because we are proud of it, however the Council delivers many projects across our town. We host a wide range of free family events, provide free Saturday bus travel, accessible parking, support tourism promotion, provide Christmas lights, hanging baskets and floral planters, run a vibrant indoor and outdoor market, support Oswestry Town Museum and safeguard historic buildings and assets.
www.oswestry-tc.gov.uk NEWSLETTER 2023
Youth services and facilities
Supporting our young people is a priority for the Council and you might be aware that we fund the youth club held at the Centre and fund a mental health and wellbeing service (Heads Up) at the Marches. We also provide free holiday activities and work experience opportunities, run a youth forum and have supported the development of a targeted intervention programme – helping to change the narrative for ten young men. We are currently working on trying to bring the Centre on Oak Street back to use as a community building.
Other Core Services
We can only provide a summary of our work in this report, however for a small council we deliver a wide range of services including the cemetery, Cae Glas and Brogyntyn parks, street lighting, free loft insulation, tree planting, speed reduction signs, Oswestry Rickshaw, the renovation of the Cross Market Building, the completion of the ramp to improve accessibility from Castle Street, improvements to the central carpark exit, support for those fleeing the war in the Ukraine and a new bus stop in Church Street, which has a green roof.
Climate Change
Tackling climate change and mitigating against the impact of climate change is a priority for Oswestry Town Council and this year we have extended free bus travel on all town centre routes in the town on a Saturday. In addition, and in part to address fuel poverty, the town council is funding free loft insulation for Band A and B council tax properties.
Tree planting is a priority and the town council has, with a lot of help,
planted 6,000 trees and hedgerow plants this year. This has been thoroughly enjoyable work and has only been possible with the support of wonderful volunteers, schools and community groups.
The Council is continually looking to reduce its carbon footprint by investing in LED street lighting and by running an electric vehicle. This summer, a rapid EV charger will be installed on the Horsemarket Car Park in addition to those already installed at the Central Car Park.
www.oswestry-tc.gov.uk NEWSLETTER 2023
Events
Events always prove to be a huge success in Oswestry and not many places can boast the range of free events and activities that the town provides. Cae Glas Park hosts a full programme of community events during the summer months including the Community Games, Family Fun Day and Bulgarian Music and Dance. One of our largest events is Oswestry’s Food & Drink Festival, which takes to the streets for two days in July with food and drink stalls from all over Shropshire and North Wales. Other events include the Youth Music Festival, Heritage Open Days in September, TNS in the Park and Panto in the Park with the Attfield Theatre.
Despite the difficult flying conditions, the Balloon Carnival was a hit, with the popular Saturday Nightglow a success. Christmas Music Live kicks off a full festive programme of fun with the amazing Parade (organised by the Rotary Club) on the Saturday and the Santa Run on the Sunday.

Great British Market Awards 2023
Oswestry Market Traders continued their award-winning streak by gaining a Great British Market Awards 2023 Highly Commended Certificate. The awards, led by the National Association of British Markets, are an opportunity to champion and celebrate markets in Great Britain. Our markets are a visitor attraction and an important social and cultural aspect of our community.
Grant Funding
The Council provides funding to local organisations both directly and through its grant funding programme. This year, the Town Council has helped the Community First Responders to get a second car on the road and provided bleed kits in all of the de-fib boxes across the town. Other grants were awarded to U&I Counselling, Oswestry Sports Forum, the Community Games, Parkinsons in the Marches, Pebbles People, Friends of Parkies & Open Space Studios. This funding will continue in 2023/24 and the Council has agreed to provide considerable support to OsNosh and to the Foodbank.
CCTV
The town’s CCTV, supported by volunteers, is run and funded by Oswestry Town Council in partnership with Oswestry BID and Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council. It is an awardwinning initiative and one that attracts a lot of envy from around the county. The CCTV system is very much appreciated by the police and is predominately used as a reactive tool. In 2022, we carried out 164 reviews of evidence of which 74 resulted in us providing evidence for court prosecutions. Additionally, the cameras installed on the Industrial Estate have been particularly successful at detecting criminal activity.
Community Leadership
With regards to our Community Leadership, we called a public meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner, local Superintendent and our local MP to provide businesses and residents a platform to voice their concerns. This had tangible results and changed the way the police work on a number of local priorities. We also held a public meeting with Shropshire Council’s highways team, devoted our annual town meeting to the issue of social isolation and continue to be involved in local planning applications.
Looking forward
Parish Councils are the first level of government and it could be argued that we are the most important as we are closest to the people we serve.
As we look forward to 2023/24, there are some exciting projects in progress. There will be the provision of a new Changing Places facility in the town, we will be making improvements in Cae Glas Park as we host more events, Oswestry is competing in the final of Britain in Bloom and so much more. The financial challenges are also apparent, the increase in energy costs affects us all and our cost increases cannot be met by increases in Council Tax.

Oswestry Town Council
Welcome to the new Mayor
In early May, Councillor Olly Rose began her duties as Oswestry Town Mayor during the ceremonial handover meeting and outlined some of her priorties for the upcoming civic year.
Councillor Rose was elected in 2017 and has lived in Shropshire for more than 30 years and grew to know Oswestry through her work and chose it as her home 7 years ago. Olly worked with charity ‘Age UK’ for 20 years and Oswestry formed part of her patch throughout this time.
Through the experience of her clients, Olly saw that Oswestry had many clubs and activities for older people and there was a great neighbourly spirit. Since being a Councillor, she has witnessed that same sense of community in the many charities and groups active in Oswestry.
Olly said, “There is of course room for improvement, however I can see a lot of positives in our town. In recent years, I‘ve attended market stalls to hear the views of local people and I hope to engage more in this way during my civic year and be where people find it easy to get to.“
Reflecting on the role of individual councillors and the Mayor, Olly adds, “We do our best to help Oswestry be an attractive place to set up a business, live and visit. It’s good that we come from a range of backgrounds and with differing views to reflect the community.
“The town has seen a number of improvements in recent years, with many more plans in the pipeline. This year will see the refurbishment of one of our oldest listed buildings, Llwyd Mansion. We hope to see Cambrian building lose its scaffolding and the heritage railway continue its tremendous progress. A new business is on the horizon for the old Morrison’s building and the long awaited ‘Changing Places’ toilets will be installed. We are excited to be in this summer’s Britain in Bloom finals, we’re continuing to provide free loft insulation and a free Saturday town bus service and there are many more projects on the way.“
Olly has chosen Oswestry Foodbank and Osnosh as her Mayor’s charities for the year and has decided to continue the quarterly community awards, which recognise people who go the extra mile for our community.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jay Moore, for his contribution to the community over the last year. Jay has brought a fresh style to the role, has been incredibly active throughout the year and proved to be an excellent Mayor for our town.“

Oswestry Food & Drink Festival
The ever-popular Oswestry Food & Drink Festival, probably the friendliest food festival in Shropshire, is back for its 14th year. This popular free event once again takes place right in the heart of Oswestry town centre on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July from 10am till 4pm each day.
The very best specialist food and drink exhibitors from the region will be baking and brewing to bring their delicious wares for your table across the weekend. The streets will be alive with aromas of African, Middle-Eastern, Malaysian, Indian, and Spanish cooking plus we will be showcasing the pick of local produce from sausages to hog roast, and crepes to ciders. For the sweet of tooth, there’s traditional cakes, cupcakes and fancies galore!
There are award-winning ciders and ales from both sides of the border, not to mention cocktails, liqueurs and wines from near and far too. We also have Oswestry’s own gin and real ale producers attending the festival. As well as the fabulous food and drink, there will be live music and other family activities throughout the weekend to entertain, again all for free.
Whilst exploring the festival, look out for the huge variety of independent coffee shops and
retailers available throughout Oswestry and perhaps take a festival picnic to Cae Glas Park where you will find the fun packed TNS Fun Day on the 8th. On Sunday, 9 July, there’ll be the everpopular Reggae in the Park for those who just want to chill with their festival goodies to some great music. Both these events are again free to attend and are a great family day out.
The festival is brought to you through Oswestry Town Council. For more information follow the Oswestry Food Festival Facebook page.

Aico host Family Fundraising Festival in support of local charities
Aico are hosting a Family Fundraising Festival this summer in support of two amazing local charities, The Movement Centre and Little Stars.
The day will be fun filled, with various activities and attractions for all ages, live music, circus acts, local food and drink suppliers and so much more. The fundraising day is taking place at the picturesque Brynkinalt Estate from 12pm until 7pm on Saturday 15 July 2023 with all proceeds going to two incredible charities.
The Movement Centre, a specialist treatment centre, helps children who have Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or other diagnoses, to achieve new skills through increased strength and control of their movement. They do this using Targeted Training, a specialist therapy that is currently only provided by The Movement Centre, within the UK.
Fundraising and Marketing Officer, Curtis Langley can’t wait to get involved, commenting, “The Movement Centre are delighted to be involved in the upcoming Aico Family Festival, and we can’t thank Aico enough for their kind support once again. Being a part of the organising committee has been great, seeing this event grow from a concept idea, to now being two months away. The staff at Aico have done a fantastic job in securing bands, a circus, some great local food, and drink vendors, and we can’t wait to be involved in this awesome day. Having events like this really boosts awareness of both charities, and the great community work of Aico. Make sure you get your tickets and come and join us for a great day of family fun.”
Little Stars, an Aico charity of the year supported since 2021, provides families who need support with essential items to help keep babies and children clean, clothed, and safe. Launched in 2020, the charity has directly supported over 400 babies and children throughout Shropshire by providing the essentials they need. Through its Santa’s Little Stars Campaign, it has also supplied Christmas presents for 500 children in the county.
Little Stars Founder, Leanne Simcoe is really looking forward to the day, commenting, “For Little Stars this is a huge moment in the charity’s history, having the support of Aico since 2021 has enabled us to grow beyond our expectations and for them to hold this event in aid of us is fantastic. Raising money in the charity sector is critical to ensure we can continue our vital services. Having this event not only to raise funds but also raise awareness of our work means so much to the Little Stars team and the families we support.”
Through their CSR initiative, Aico in the Community, Aico make supporting local causes a key priority. This latest collaboration will be a chance to not only raise funds for these two local charities in a fun family environment but also raise awareness of the vital work they do.
Community Liaison Lily Ellis is excited for the festival, adding, “Organising this festival has been a great experience and it has been amazing to see all the local businesses within Shropshire support us to deliver a fantastic day for two amazing charities. I hope that local families can enjoy the day while raising some needed funds for Little Stars and The Movement Centre, buy your tickets now!”

Common things occur commonly. But rare things do occur
Being human means having symptoms – every day. Some symptoms are so common as to be almost universal - I am confident everyone reading this has been bloated. The problem occurs when an illness mimics our everyday experience. We often ignore common symptoms until they become severe, and the illness presents “late” i.e., at an advanced stage.
8 May was World Ovarian Cancer Day. Bloating is this cancer’s predominant symptom and that often means it presents late. Early ovarian cancer is readily treatable –the later stages not quite so treatable.
Doctors like acronyms – there is a lot to remember and they make it easier. Ovarian cancer has BEACH. B for bloating. E for early satiety i.e., feeling full too easily. A for abdominal or pelvic pain and C and H for changes in bowel or bladder habits. Who gets this type of tumour? Being over 50 is a risk factor with half of all cases being over 65yrs of age. A family history of bowel or breast cancer, treatment for a previous tumour and HRT all increase risk. Females who started having periods early or had a late menopause or who had no
Females who started having periods early or had a late menopause or who had no children are all at increased risk.
children are all at increased risk. As usual for many illnesses, smoking and being overweight increase the risk. There are more details at nhs.uk.
Once suspected, the diagnosis or hopefully the exclusion of the illness, is relatively easy – it usually involves blood tests and a scan.
Ovarian cysts always remind me of my student days. One consultant was widely feared and l was to spend my first morning with him in theatre. He gave me a pen, “Write the classification of ovarian cysts on that board for me,” he said. He’d asked the previous student the same question – and they had told me. I proceeded to reproduce the textbook on the whiteboard with a wide grin on my face!

WE PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL HOMECARE IN A RANGE OF SERVICES:
Sarcoma Awareness Month: Would you know?
“I had a lump on my leg for three months before I got it looked at – if it was on my breast I would have been to the GP the next day – I never thought it could be cancer”
This July is Sarcoma awareness month. Many people only know about this rare form of cancer if they know someone with a diagnosis or have been diagnosed themselves. However, the importance of knowing what to look out for is so important as early diagnosis is the key to effective treatment and management.
In 2019 in the UK, approximately 1,100 people a day were diagnosed with cancer. Sarcoma is rare, with only 15 people, or 1.5% of these being a sarcoma diagnosis. That’s about 5,300 people a year.
The Musculoskeletal Oncology Service at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, Oswestry, is one of the lesser-known specialist services that the hospital offers. It provides service for the diagnosis, surgical treatment, rehabilitation and surveillance of patients with musculoskeletal tumours. Since 2005 it has been one of only five centres that are specially commissioned by NHS England for the management for primary bone tumours. As a specialist centre, patients travel to the unit from as far North as Preston and the Isle of Man, Manchester, North Wales and down to Hereford. Receiving approximately 1600 new referrals a year and that number is increasing.
A cancer diagnosis can devastate plans, causing disruption and devastation to lives and generally cause chaos. It is the job of the team here – which consists of Consultant Surgeons and Doctors,
Physiotherapists, Healthcare Assistants, Booking Teams, Tracking Teams, Specialist Nurses, Radiology Teams, Ancillary Staff and Histopathology Labs to try and enable the patients pathway is an efficient, faultless and supported one.
When that cancer diagnosis is rare, there is even more uncertainty. By working closely with their partners Macmillan Cancer Support and more specialist charities, Sarcoma UK and The Bone Cancer Research Trust, they provide patients with information and support.
There are around 100 different subtypes of sarcoma. The two main types of are soft tissue sarcoma and bone sarcoma. A primary bone sarcoma can affect any bone in the body and at any age but most commonly affects children, teenagers, young adults and elderly people. There are approximately 560 new cases of primary bone cancer each year in the UK and symptoms can be similar to sports injuries, growing pains, or common conditions such as arthritis. So, it’s important to know that if the picture doesn’t fit, then to get it checked out by your GP. Symptoms can include:
• Bone pain; it can be constant (there all the time) or intermittent (comes and goes). Painkillers might not help and it can often be worse at night.
• A lump or swelling might be seen or felt if the tumour is near the surface of the body. In other places (e.g., the pelvis) a lump or swelling will not be visible.
• Problems with mobility such as stiff joints or reduced movement.
• Easy bruising.
• Tiredness, sweats/fever, weight loss, or fractures. These symptoms are less common but are still experienced by some patients.
Soft tissue sarcomas commonly affect the arms, legs and torso, as well as more rarely internal organs. If you have a lump which is growing, changing, or bigger than a golf ball, it is important to get this assessed by a health professional. It is also important to remember most lumps and pains are not sarcomas. A consultation and referral through our two weeks wait service can often quickly deescalate concern.

Lanyon Bowdler team looking forward to Oswestry Show
Agricultural shows are a staple of the social scene in Shropshire, and Oswestry Show is always a highlight of the summer with its blend of livestock, main ring entertainment and trade stands.
The team at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors will be there once again, providing hospitality and welcoming all to their stand. Tania McGee, agriculture and commercial property solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler, says shows like Oswestry are a great chance to connect with people.
“Oswestry is really lucky to have the members and all the team involved with Oswestry and District Agricultural Society who work so hard to make Oswestry Show a great day out whilst promoting agriculture and rural businesses,” she says.
“The team at the firm’s Oswestry office always look forward to the show, particularly those from a farming background.
“We view agricultural shows as an important opportunity to catch up with clients, some of whom we have worked with for years, and potential clients, and it’s great to be able to chat informally about how things are going.
“Farming has been through a tumultuous time, firstly with Brexit and now with soaring costs and economic uncertainty, and it’s fascinating to catch up with farmers
and landowners to get their take on the situation.
“It’s also beneficial for them to have the ear of a legal expert, and we often find plenty of issues are discussed over a glass of fizz on show day!”
As well as Oswestry Show on August 5, the Lanyon Bowdler team will be at Llanfyllin Show on August 12, providing refreshments and activities for children at the firm’s stand.
Tania adds: “We try to make our stands fun for all ages, and our traditional hoopla and guess how many bears in the jar games always prove a popular draw for youngsters.
“Please look out for the Lanyon Bowdler stand if you are attending any country shows this summer, and we look forward to saying hello!”
Lanyon Bowdler can assist with a whole range of legal services, everything from divorce and family issues to clinical negligence and corporate law. For more information visit www.lblaw.co.uk or visit the offices in Church Street, Oswestry.

8 tips for surviving the school holidays on a budget
By Paula Hurford, Wealth Management Consultant
We’re still feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis and the school summer holidays are almost here. That means organising six weeks of kid’s entertainment - all on a budget and trying to keep it interesting for them too. So here are some handy tips and entertainment ideas for you to help you survive the school holidays without breaking the bank:
1. Explore the countryside
Try finding a local landmark nearby to walk to or visiting a National Trust and English Heritage site to learn about history in your local area. Some country parks even have fun nature trails that children can follow.
2. Get crafty
Encourage your kids to get their creative juices flowing. Maybe set them a task to make an object out of the cardboard and plastic you have in the recycling, such as a pirate ship or a monster.
3. Visit an adventure park
Use your local authority website to find your nearest adventure playground which has much more than the average slide and swings. They are often cheap or free to visit.
4. Try a scavenger hunt
Why not get your kids to find objects around your town or village? Perhaps give them some clues to make it a little harder. This can be a great way to get outside and bring out their inner detective!
5. Enjoy a free family festival or event
Find out what free organised events and activities your local council has to offer and check out the local festival guide to see what’s on.
6. Take advantage of family discounts
Lots of restaurants, supermarket cafés and places such as theme parks and cinemas have discounts available throughout the holidays such as two for one or kids go free.
7. Visit a free museum or gallery
Lots of museums have dedicated children’s activities to take part in as you go, and they often have the added bonus of being air conditioned so you can stay cool on a hot day.
8. Create your own cinema experience
With the number of streaming and on demand content available now, there are so many movies that can be watched at home. Make a cosy space or den, choose their favourite movie, and enjoy some snacks.

Focus on… the Monty re-opening
through the lens of Graham Mitchell
On 2 June, the section of canal from Redwith to Crickheath was officially re-opened to canal traffic. Over the last eight years, 169 volunteers have spent many hundreds of hours restoring the canal and over 300 days relining the canal. This has involved 100 work parties, mainly at weekends. The volunteers dug out and moved around 15,000 tonnes of material during the work and then added 36,000 square metres of liner to create a watertight seal on the canal bed. What an achievement!

retro garden
Give your outdoor space a nostalgic feel with a 70’s inspired aesthetic. Keep it modern and fresh by avoiding the clash of brightly coloured patterns and keep to neutral earthy tones with one colour to pull through. That sepia tone that dominates those old family photos, is the perfect 70’s neutral to play with in the garden. Use natural wood furniture with wicker and rattan, simple steppingstones in gravel, functional trellises and a restricted playful pop of colour in the textiles and you’ve nailed a laid back style that is familiar and fresh at the same time.

Gardening
July in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
July, the culmination of all your hard work, but not a time to completely relax. There is still plenty to do.
Deadheading can be a time-consuming task but can be quite an enjoyable as it gives you time to look at the plants closely, enjoying them but also looking for signs of pests. Removing spent flowers will divert the energy used to produce seedheads into general plant growth and encourage more flowers. Deadhead just under the flower, leaving the stalk. Most of the time you can just snap them off, no pruning required. Do remember though that seeds provide food for wildlife, so it is worth leaving some for them, especially the sunflower heads. Keep those birdbaths filled up for them too.
On these hot summer days, watering is a priority, especially with containers. Regular watering is essential but avoid the heat of the day. The water will just evaporate and can cause scorching to delicate leaves. Use rainwater wherever possible and remember that compost only has feed for a limited time, so a feeding regime needs to be in place. Even on hot days you can kill plants with over-watering, so check that drainage holes are clear, and pots don’t get waterlogged. If you
go on holiday, remember to arrange a waterer, and it is a good idea to move pots into a shadier area. Your vegetable plot should be producing now. Regular picking of Runner and French Beans, Cucumbers and Courgettes is essential as this will encourage more to grow. Early picking means you get tasty young produce, so don’t leave your broad beans until they get large and tough. Look carefully at your Courgettes, it is amazing how quickly they turn into Marrows! Check the fruit and vegetable plants for pests like White Butterfly eggs and caterpillars on Brassicas and sawfly larvae on Gooseberries, before they do damage.
But most of all, enjoy your garden!

detail,
What do we mean by exotic plants?
It’s not unusual for those who love gardens to yearn for something that looks tropical or exotic. These plants remind us of holidays and help with a contemporary feel.
Tropical gardens
Bold foliage and dazzling flower colours can create a lush, dramatic oasis. Tropical plants can be used to create a framework for your garden and the spaces between can be filled with plants that provide complementary shapes and colours. Grasses such as carex and miscanthus work well, as do large-leafed evergreens including Fatsia japonica and ferns. Hostas can pop up during spring and summer, together with shade-dwelling brunneras, brightly-flowering crocosmia and day lilies in the sunnier areas. Japanese anemones are partial-shade lovers that fit in well for some latesummer flowers combined with interesting foliage.
It is possible to grow bananas (Musa) here in the UK, although they might need some winter protection. They can form huge statement plants up to three metres high and their tropical leaves can reach a length of two metres. It is rare for them to form fruit in the UK, but it is possible! Then there are the much- coveted tree ferns, Dicksonia antarctica, which are said to be some of the oldest plants in the world.
The iconic tropical forest trees are palms, such as Trachycarpus fortunei and wagnerianus, also known as windmill or chusan palms, Phoenix canariensis, the Canary Island date palm and Chamaerops humilis, the dwarf fan palm. These varieties have proved to be fairly hardy here in the UK, although they often sustain damage that needs to be tidied up in the spring.
Go for a lush, full appearance and consider using bamboo to screen out the constraints of your boundaries. Clumping varieties including fargesias are easier to maintain, but use a root barrier to be sure your bamboo won’t invade further afield.
Desert gardens
It’s not easy to create a desert garden within a country with high rainfall. However, if you have a south-facing, sheltered site and you prepare the ground adequately, it is not impossible. Desertdwellers need very free-draining soil of almost pure grit or sand. Plants will be those that store water, such as cacti, agaves and aloes.
You can use desert as your inspiration and be inspired by the Sahara, Gobi and Kalahari, creating a garden that has the atmosphere of this unique type of ecosystem. Ornamental grasses are a must for the desert vibe, with their sandy-coloured seed heads and narrow leaves. Yuccas are well-adapted to desert life and you can include perennials such as salvias, cistus, sedum and creeping thyme. Drought-tolerant plants often have silvery foliage and fine hairs on the leaves that help them conserve moisture. You will definitely not see a lush lawn in a desert!

WILL YOU HAVE TO PAY MORE TAX ON YOUR PENSION?
Are you approaching retirement age or already enjoying the freedom of your golden years? If so, you’ll know how important it is to stay informed about changes that could impact your financial wellbeing. The recent 10.1% boost to the state pension, for example, is something that you may have seen in the headlines.
And while the increase is undoubtedly positive news, some people may not be aware that it could impact the amount of tax they’ll need to pay on their pension.
Oswestry-based independent financial adviser and co-director of Belgrave Wincham, Craig Roberts, explains: “The recent increase to state pension payments in the UK will benefit around 12.6 million people nationwide. This is clearly a welcome move, but what some may not realise is that their personal tax allowance hasn’t changed. For thousands this could mean that the rise will now take them over their tax-free limit, resulting in less money in their pocket. If you’re unsure if, or how, this will impact you, consider making an appointment with an independent financial adviser to find out more.”
Tailored expert advice plays a vital role in making knowledgeable decisions about your retirement plans, and an independent financial adviser (IFA) can look at the full picture to assess your current pension arrangements. They can also guide you on any other income sources you may have, ensuring you’re aware of all your options and opportunities.
“Staying on top of the constantly evolving pension landscape can be challenging,” adds Craig. “A good independent financial adviser will provide comprehensive retirement planning services to help your overall financial situation. From identifying tax-efficient strategies and managing potential risks to creating a comfortable income plan, their expertise should empower you to make well-informed choices.”
For a FREE 60-minute consultation to discuss your pension and retirement plan, call the team at Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

What happens about shared access & drains if I sell off half my land?
Q: I have run a small market garden business from my home for the last thirty years. I now want to retire but my wife does not want to move out of the house. If I sell off the business and land it occupies, what would I need to do about what would become a shared access road, drains etc? And should I sell it leasehold or freehold?
A: It is becoming more commonplace these days for people with a substantial amount of land to downsize to one part of it, rather than sell up completely and move. However, dealing with shared access roads, drains and other facilities can be tricky, and you should talk through all your options and their implications with a solicitor before making any decisions.
Even if you have it written into the sale contract that your purchaser agrees to carry out repairs, or contribute to repairs that you make, such an obligation will not automatically pass on to someone they later sell the property to. For this to happen, your solicitor will need to draft the documents so that the maintenance obligation applies every time the land is sold on.
Selling the property with a long leasehold interest in the land instead of selling the freehold outright would make it easier to provide for ongoing maintenance obligations. However, if your purchaser needs a mortgage, then a freehold sale is going to be more straightforward and therefore possibly more attractive.
You should also consider how a new neighbour may affect your land in the future, and you may want to restrict how the land you are selling can be used, or what can be built on it. For example, you could limit the number of buildings on the land or restrict their height or position to ensure light to existing buildings is not blocked. The law on rights of light is complex, so this is another very important area to discuss with your solicitor.
