£1,170 raised for Alder Hey
A school girl from Oswestry completed a 10mile walk last month, raising £1,170 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Before the walk, 7-year-old Ruby Stocker said, “I have chosen to support Alder Hey as they helped my brother when he was very poorly and have continued to do so. Alder Hey have been amazing with my brother and all other children that they support at their hospital. I really want to show my brother how much I love and support him.”
Family and friends gathered at Stonehouse Brewery to cheer Ruby on at the finish line.
RJAH Charity teed up as Oswestry Golf Club’s charity of the year
The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) has been announced as Oswestry Golf Club’s beneficiary for the year of 2023.
The 2023 Captains of Oswestry Golf Club have chosen RJAH Charity and the Garden for Alice fundraising appeal, along with the Headley Court Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre as their charitable causes for the forthcoming year.
The Garden for Alice fundraising appeal aims to create a stunning therapeutic outdoor garden for paediatric patients and their families. Funding is needed to enhance the current garden area to ensure it is inclusive for all the children RJAH cares for, while being accessible throughout the day and during the evening.
Stuart Foulkes and Dorothy Mottram took office at the beginning of April, and both have close ties to the Oswestry area. Stuart said, “We are delighted to have chosen RJAH as the beneficiary of the club’s fundraising activities over the coming year.
“The Garden for Alice project will create an incredible new facility for children of all ages to enjoy and the Headley Court Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre is close my heart, as a current serving member of the Royal Air Force, entering into my 32nd year of service.”
The club have already made headway with their fundraising having held a successful Captains drive-in and Fashion Show – collectively raising approximately £660.

Trefonen Coronation Funday a Success
Along with many local villages around Oswestry, Trefonen organised their Coronation celebrations on Monday 8 May. Held at The Barley Mow pub and despite the weather being cooler, the community turned out to support the organisers.
All proceeds from the day go towards Friends of Trefonen School and Explorers (Preschool) to benefit the local children. Organiser, Mel Oakley said, “I can’t believe how many people have come, it’s amazing! We’re so grateful for all the support.”
Throughout the day, there were competitions for dogs, baking and crowns made by the school children. The Barley Mow held a kids disco in the garden and the stalls offered everything from cakes and ice-cream to homemade crafts and tombola. There was live entertainment from a local band and even Charles and Camilla’s made a surprise appearance.
Reflecting on how successful the day had been, Chair of Friends of Trefonen School, Lisa Williams, said, “It’s amazing what has been organised today. The money raised goes back into the community for the kids, who then benefit. A huge thanks to Mel and Heather (The Barley Mow) for supporting us.”
The day concluded with the village coronation tree naming and planting ceremony, with special guest Marie Martin, the most senior citizen in the village. A touching few moments, with the Porthywaen Silver Band playing to mark the occasion and a lot of smiles from children and parents waving flags. The tree was kindly donated by Gary Ellis of W.E. Price Funeral Directors. Mel told Oswestry Life; the community very much look forward to decorating it at Christmas.
Hope House shops in need of donations
People are being asked to support seriously ill local children by making donations of fashion and home accessories to Hope House Children’s Hospice shops in Shropshire and Powys.
The shops are starting to run low on donations and the charity is asking people to consider making donations when clearing out items.

This week Nigel Williams, Managing Director of Arthurs Motor Group, presented Margaret Maguire with her 25 years of service.

In Memory
James Henry Carl Martin 25 July 1956 – 27 March 2023
James (Jimmy to his friends and family) was born in West Felton where he attended West Felton Primary School. He was the only son of the late William Martin and Rosie Martin (nee Evans) and has two sisters Harriet and Sybil.
The family moved to Eardiston around 1960 and James then attended Oswestry Boys Modern School where he discovered his love of music, playing the Cornet in the school brass band under the tutorage of Dixi Dean.
His uncle then introduced him to the bagpipes showing him the basics of playing the pipes and James had found his calling.
He joined the Irish Guards aged 15 and a half, where he quickly established himself as a piper par excellence rising to the rank of Pipe Major which was awarded on 21 April 1988.
On 10 January 1994, James was ‘at the Queen’s Command’ appointed as a piper to the royal household where he was reputed to be a favourite of the Queen Mother. This appointment was to be during her Majesty’s pleasure and became void on the death of the sovereign.
Just before he retired from the Army, he supported the late Kirsty McCall on the Jools Holland Hogmanay show, seeing in 1995 by piping ‘Miss Otis Regrets’.
James served 30 years in the Irish Guards travelling the world in the service of his country before finally retiring from the Army, when he then settled in Bonnyrigg near Edinburgh and set up his own company F1 Hydrojet.
He passed away in the Philippines 27 March 2023 aged 67 surrounded by loving family.
Fondly remembered by all his friends and family across the world.
James (Jimmy) Martin, one of Oswestry’s Heroes.

A Coffee Called Flat Red
If you love coffee, you might want to put your usual beverage to one side for a moment and consider something a little different. Imagine an aromatic, freshly brewed espresso but add some freshly squeezed orange and pomegranate juice and steam as you would milk. What does that even taste like? Well, we can tell you, it is a beautifully smooth coffee, and we would happily have a lot more of it. This is the Flat Red. So, where has this come from?
Last month, an event was held by a member of Oswestry’s Ukrainian community, at Oswestry School. A well-known coffee shop owner from Kyiv, Vadym Granovskiy was invited to speak at the event and introduce his Flat Red invention and its mission to support Ukrainian soldiers on the front line in the ongoing war.
So how does coffee support soldiers? It goes back to the history of the drink and what it means for millions of us – getting that caffeine
boost. It has been scientifically proven that caffeine boosts us cognitively and mentally, which means we can feel focused.
Vadym’s coffee shop is so popular in Kyiv, that customers queue out the door just to have a Flat Red. The idea for this unique coffee came about when he was asked to create a bespoke coffee to represent a Lexus car for a marketing campaign. While this gained a lot of interest and things started to take off after a string of competitions, Covid hit, and things came to a grinding halt. Naturally, Covid affected Vadym’s business and forced him to look at other ways his coffee brand could continue. He now travels across the world and raises awareness for his charity, Coffee in Action, to support the soldiers.
Vadym, explained, “Covid damaged the business and I want to bring people’s attention to the soldiers who need our support and whom we can help. By sending our coffee out to them on the front line, it helps them to stay alert and alive. The Flat Red is now symbolic for the Ukraine.”
Organiser of the event, Tetyana was grateful for those who came and said, “I am so happy the guests were so interested, and they took the time to understand Vadym’s story and how we have all been affected.”
Ladies from the
Ukrainian community were also in attendance to help host and introduce guests to some of their homemade cuisine.
We asked Vadym if he had visited any of the coffee shops during his short stay in Oswestry.
“I went to Liar Liar and enjoyed the coffee there very much. You know when you have a good coffee because the espresso is great. Without that, you can’t make a good coffee.”
It’s hard to imagine being in the position of those displaced by war, but it is inspiring when something as unexpected as coffee can be used to support those on the front line.
To try the Flat Red recipe:
• Pull a double espresso shot (around 50ml depending on the recipe)
• Steam 110ml of orange and pomegranate juice mix to 55°C (131°F)
• Pour the drink into a Duralex Picardie clear glass tumbler.
More information about the charity can be found at www.coffeeinaction.com

Happy Birthday Cat World
Cat World Feline Superstore, one of Oswestry’s many independent shops, celebrated its 4th birthday last month, on 11 May.
Owned by husband and wife team, Graham and Di, the business has been trading for over 12 years. Firstly online which is still active (bengalcatworld.co.uk), alongside having a stall at cat shows up and down the country.
Di said, “In 2018, we decided to test the water of having a physical shop, and the ideal way to do that, at relatively low risk, was by renting a space in the indoor market.
“This proved to be a success so when we saw that they were renovating the old Bakers Oven building, we saw an opportunity to have our own shop and here we are! We are next door to the Market Town Vet, in the alleyway next to Boots.
“With hindsight, we probably didn’t pick the best time to open a new shop. After a few months, the whole country was pretty much brought to a standstill with COVID and lockdowns.
“We made it through that only for everyone to feel the impact of the cost of living crisis which has been more challenging than the pandemic ever was.
“But we are still here! We have lots of lovely regular local customers and also visitors to the town pop in. We have even had people from places such as Stoke, Preston and Cardiff who have come especially to Oswestry to visit our shop as they’ve seen us on Google or Trip Advisor.
“Paws crossed that we are still here in another four years!”

Flaunt Director and owner Becky, knows what’s hot this season and lets us in on the trends and gives you some style advice about what to aim for:
“If you colour your hair or just dabble a bit, the summer is all about the balayage. It’s a look that gives dimension to your colour and enhances any style. Warm tones through your chosen shade or natural colour, brings an expensive feel and we always focus on making sure your length (short, mid or long) look healthy and shiny.
“If you’re struggling with the condition of your hair after the constant hot/cold atmospheres from the past few months, we recommend swapping to more nourishing hair products. We use some of the Eleven Australia products in the salon because

VOLUNTEER AT NIGHTINGALES
22 life
YOUR HOSPICE NEEDS YOU!
At Nightingale House Hospice we have strong links with Oswestry by providing patient care to those that need us, our co- hosting of the annual Balloon Carnival (returning 19th and 20th August 2023) and of course our Nightingales shop on Cross Street where hidden treasures are often found.
An intrinsic part of the income stream, Nightingales plays an important role in ensuring the hospice is able to fund and deliver the services, wellbeing and care patients and their families need. If you would like to support the hospice then look no further, we have a wide range of volunteering opportunities where you can make a real difference and be a part of something big and exciting.
Plus, volunteering is great for your own wellbeing; by doing something positive for the local community, in addition to learning new skills and meeting new people.
WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS SAY;
‘The team are warm and welcoming, and I got stuck in straightaway in the busy shop. I cover a wide range of roles including serving customers (I’m now a pro on the till!), pricing stock, visual merchandising and sorting through donated items.
You will get to know your regular customers who frequently stop for a chat and catch up whether they are browsing or have come in to donate their clothing, books, crockery and other household items.
I enjoy learning new skills, and don’t worry previous experience of working in a shop is not necessary; a smile and friendly personality are the most important things!
I always feel inspired by the like-minded, motivated and positive volunteers around me. It has become clear that volunteering with Nightingales really is for everyone, no matter what your lifestyle. Whether you are a student, a full-time professional, a retiree, there is a role to suit everyone!’
If you are interested in finding out more please visit nightingalehouse.co.uk or email
volunteering@nightingalehouse.co.uk.
Remember you don’t need any experience and committing even as little as two hours per week can have a profound benefit to the Hospice, your local community and to your own wellbeing.

In March last year the then Mayor, Councillor Mark Jones and the President of Oswestry Borderland Rotary, Cathy Osselton presented cheques to the organisations who had made successful applications to the Bonfire and Fireworks Grant Fund. Rotarian, Jonathan Jones who was present at the unveiling ceremony said: “Over £9000 was raised by this hugely popular event which was organised and stewarded by us and underwritten by the Town Council. The result was that we were able to support many worthy causes such as this one around the town.”
A sum of £500 was awarded to the Cricket Club towards the purchase of the defibrillator and a secure cabinet to house it. This has now been installed adjacent to the back door of Gatacre Pavilion. The shortfall in funding for the equipment was then supplemented by another £500 donated by the family and friends of Andrew Roads, an ex-pupil of Whittington CE Primary School, the Marches School and North Shropshire College.
Andrew, who died suddenly in May 2020 of a totally unsuspected heart condition, lived in London where he had established himself as a successful freelance translator.
Andrew’s parents, Barbara and Jim Roads of Morda explained: “Due to lockdown requirements, an event to commemorate Andrew’s life couldn’t be held until April last year 3 days after what would have been his 43rd birthday. More than 100 friends and family members gathered together to celebrate his life and a collection was made at the event which raised sufficient funds to make a donation towards the cost of the Gatacre Pavilion defibrillator, as well as one in the Forest Hill area of London where Andrew and his wife, Jo, had made their home.”
Oswestry former Town mayor, Councillor Jay Moore expressed his gratitude to Mr and Mrs Roads as well as to Andrew’s sister, Emily Lewis, for their contribution towards the cost of the life-saving equipment, whose ongoing care and maintenance is being paid for by Cae Glas Cricket Club who have undertaken to pay for battery replacement and training of key personnel. “We stand in solidarity with the family in their grief, hoping that the gift that has been made in Andrew’s name brings some small comfort in their loss.”

There’s
behind it.
We’re Gemma and Laura, two tired mums on a mission to boost the motherhood experience one cup of fairtrade, specialty coffee at a time.
We co-founded Tired Mums
Coffee with a mission of strengthening peer support for Mums through creating an inclusive community for all, this in turn improving maternal wellbeing. Our aim is to bring mums together to ensure that quality coffee and conversation is accessible to all and is happening all over the UK. Together we can enjoy the highs, share/support the lows and really normalise the normal.
Our paths first crossed during our NHS careers and one day, over a conversation in a soft play centre with coffees in hand, the concept of Tired Mums Coffee was born! We were both on our second maternity leave and were noticing a lack of peer support for mums. We had also recently learned of a tragic suicide of a mother and decided that we wanted to make things better.
We’ve both developed a deep love of coffee, especially since becoming increasingly sleep deprived in recent years, which led us to explore how coffee could be used to make positive change. There are two parts to Tired Mums Coffee; 1. Coffee, 2. Community – both are interdependent.
Why coffee?
There’s something about a decent cup of coffee that seems to encourage conversation to flow, and that’s so important. Luxurious, comforting coffee along with supportive conversation is our vision for every mum in the UK. Our coffee has a purpose and we are passionate about the journey of how we can use our coffee as a positive tool to influence change.
It was important to us to get the right blends of coffee whether you were choosing to go decaf, had been up all night or wanted something to drink throughout the day. It needed to feel like a luxurious, comforting hug. A little bit of support right there in
the palm of your hand. These blends had to be our own, designed by us for other tired mums like us, and nothing short of that would suffice (after all, we can’t be all fur coat and no knickers!).
We have created three specialty coffee blends and donate 1% of all coffee sales to charities/not-forprofit organisations who support mums, these voted for by our mum community.
The community
We have created a growing peer support community that’s accessible to all and based upon our values; non-judgemental, inclusive, welcoming and honest. The community is a place to share the highs and support the lows – some days it’s just about survival!
We have launched our virtual chat series via Facebook and YouTube and were guests on a wellknown podcast in February 2023. We held our first peer support session in March and our first face-toface mini workshop in April 2023! There’s also the beginnings of our #mumsarefine campaign (see social media for more detail).
Our Vision
Our vision is to leave a legacy for future mums (including our own daughters if they choose to have children), by improving their experiences of motherhood and encouraging knowledge sharing across generations.
We feel privileged to play our part in supporting mums and enhancing the motherhood experience. Our research has found that service provisions have changed post-covid, and that there’s an increasing call for focus on maternal wellbeing now more than ever to support those in need. We have a duty to help other mums if we can, this gig is a tough one for all of us.
We are just starting our journey but are lucky enough to be finalists for a national Startup Of The Year award in June. We are excited about the future and would love you to try our products, look at our website and give us a shoutout if you can relate in any way and would like to support our mission!

Barbeque steak with grilled asparagus and teriyaki sauce
Bursting with home-grown flavour, British asparagus is in season until the end of the month. So, pick up a bunch at your local farm shop or farmers’ market and make the most of this versatile vegetable!
Ingredients
• 2 x 150g rib-eye steaks
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra for cooking the asparagus
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 bunch British asparagus, rinsed and woody ends trimmed
• A pinch of togarashi seasoning, optional (you could use cayenne pepper)
• White and black sesame seeds, to garnish
For the teriyaki sauce
• 75ml soy sauce
• 75ml mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
• 75ml sake
• 1 tbsp sugar
Method
1. First make the teriyaki sauce. Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan, place on a medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for a couple of minutes then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Any leftover sauce can be stored in a clean bottle in the fridge.
2. If cooking on the barbecue, heat the coals until ready to cook. Alternatively, heat a griddle pan until hot and almost smoking. Rub the steaks with a little oil and season with salt and black pepper. Griddle for 2 minutes each side (depending on thickness) for medium-rare. Wrap loosely in foil and leave to rest while you cook the asparagus.
3. Rub the asparagus with a little oil then lay on the barbecue grill rack or the hot griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes, turning every now and then until they start to soften but still have bite and are lightly charred.
4. Share the asparagus between two warm plates. Slice the steaks into 1cm strips and scatter over the asparagus, spooning over the meat juices left from resting. Drizzle over the teriyaki sauce, sprinkle with togarashi (if using) and the sesame seeds.

Salted caramel semifreddo
This indulgent Italianstyle ice cream dessert is simplicity to make and keeps well in the freezer for at least a month.
Serves 8
Preparation time 35 minutes
Freeze 6+ hours
Ingredients
• Oil, for greasing
• 4 large free-range eggs, separated
• 100g caster sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 300ml double cream
• 6 tbsp salted caramel sauce (or dulce de leche), plus extra for drizzling
For the almond praline
• 100g caster sugar
• 50g toasted whole blanched almonds
Method
1. Lightly oil a 1 litre loaf tin and line with cling film.
2. Beat the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla together with a hand-held whisk until thick and a trail is left when you lift the beaters.
3. Beat the egg whites in a clean dry bowl until they form stiff peaks. In a separate bowl, beat the cream until it holds its shape and forms soft peaks.
4. Gently fold the cream into the egg yolk mixture and then fold in the eggs whites with a metal spoon in a figure-of-eight motion. Gently swirl the salted caramel throughout the mixture and transfer to the lined tin. Level the top, cover with cling film and freeze for 6 hours or until solid.
5. Meanwhile, make the praline. Line a baking tray with foil and brush lightly with oil.
NOTE: Raw eggs are used to make the semifreddo, so pregnant women, older people and anyone with a severely weakened immune system should check before eating this.
6. Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan set over a low heat. Swirl the pan occasionally until the sugar melts. As soon as it darkens to a deep amber and starts to caramelise, remove from the heat and stir in the almonds. Spoon onto the lined baking tray and leave to cool and set hard, then smash into shards.
7. When you’re ready to serve, remove the semifreddo from the freezer and unwrap. Turn out onto a serving platter and top with the praline shards. Cut into slices and serve drizzled with extra salted caramel sauce.

Arts Trail comes to Oswestry
An exciting opportunity to visit local artists’ studios through an arts trail will be taking place in and around Oswestry across two weekends in June.
The Borderland Visual Arts (BVA) will be running the event 10-11 June and 17-18 June 10am – 5pm. There are 27 artists taking part in 13 different locations in Oswestry and the surrounding villages such as West Felton, Cefn-Mawr, Llanfyllin and Weston-Rhyn to name a few.
Alison Holt, a BVA Committee Member says, “This year the BVA is really excited to offer all visitors the chance to win £100 to spend on any BVA Member’s artwork! This is a great opportunity for the winner to own some original art from their favourite local artist.”
“We hold this open studio event every year and it is always a great success, with visitors coming from all over the country. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to meet our artists, explore their creative spaces and see their work. All art is for sale but there is no obligation to buy.”
To showcase the work of the BVA artists taking part, the Willow Gallery will be holding a Group Show between 6 May – 24 June. There will also be a Private View evening on Friday 19 May 6pm-8pm, which is a great opportunity to meet the artists and be the first to see their work. If you would like to attend, please email alison@alisonholt.com.
Emma Sherry, one of the artists who will be opening her studio for the event, says, “The Arts Trail is such a wonderful opportunity for us, as artists, to meet new people, give them a glimpse into our creative process and to showcase our work.”

Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy The Odds
By David Goggins
This book is a great gift for some of the Fathers out there this 18 June. Ok, it’s not for everyone but even if you’re man in mind isn’t into fitness, David Goggins is much more than that.
Published back in 2018, this memoir doesn’t tire. Goggins tells the story of his terrible childhood, through to the point as a young man with no direction, when he faced his faults head on and decided to sort his life out.
It could be argued, David Goggins is most famous for his grueling exercise regimes. But it’s actually about the mental state for him, and that’s what he gets across in the book. For normal folk, he inspires that anything is achievable given the right mindset – not that we all wish to run 100 miles badly injured.
For a thought-provoking read that motivates the mind but without feeling like you need to compete with anyone, David Goggins gives you reasons to feel like mountains can be conquered.
POETRY
My lover’s eyes
By Dave Andrews
My love has eyes just like two gems, or so they seem to me, and in their depth a universe that I alone can see.
And when the troubles of the world seem destined here to stay, her eyes, her hands, her mouth combine to blow them all away.
My love, my love don’t fade away and leave me here alone, this world would be a void to me if I were on my own.
No longer would I have your eyes to watch me lovingly, instead an empty universe alone is all I’d see.
34 | Oswestry life BOOK REVIEW EDITOR’S CHOICE Culture
Release of Music Video for song featuring Oswestry ‘Borderlines’
On 15 May, local singer-songwriter Julius Eastwood, released the music video for his single Borderlines. A love-letter to the borders of Powys and Shropshire; the stunning video follows Julius as he explores the culturally significant locations that make the area so special. Back in March, filming took place over two days at local historic sites including LLanrhaedr Waterfall, Lake Vyrnwy, Oswestry and The Old Racecourse. The video is an ode to the people, places and stories along the borders of Wales and England. A really special area of the world with a beautiful yet complex history.
After hearing Borderlines on BBc Radio shropshire, local director Julia Pentz reached out to make a music video for the song. Previously working on projects that explore Welsh and English identity; Julia found the subject matter of the song inspiring, and she contacted Julius to begin collaborating on the video’s concept. With a thorough knowledge of the area, Julia took her film crew to capture the beauty and the mystery of the borderlines, resulting in a wonderfully cinematic story about home.
Described by BBc Presenter Michaela Wylde as a ‘gorgeous tune’, Borderlines amassed over 2000 streams
in its first 2 weeks on Spotify and has been played by BBc Radio in shropshire and Hereford. The release was covered by multiple publications including a full-page editorial in Oswestry Life Magazine and an interview in The shropshire star. Julius was also interviewed on BBc Radio shropshire discussing the song’s success and recent work with indie label Institute Records
The song was written in the winter of 2021 and the lyrics explore his relationship with his hometown of Oswestry and the history of the area.
Watch the video for Borderlines on Julius Eastwood’s official YouTube channel now.

Going bald can be a traumatic experience and, although not exclusively a male issue, more than 60% of men will get a degree of baldness which will often start in their 20s. Male pattern baldness is common and, unlike its name suggests, the genes for inheriting this problem come equally from our mothers and fathers. Women do not get the type of baldness men get but do find hair thinning generally as they age.
We all lose about 50-100 hairs per day naturally but if it is coming out in clumps, seems to have occurred suddenly, is leaving patches of baldness in amongst normal hair growth or associated with itching or burning then you should see your GP. The NHS has always seen male pattern baldness as a cosmetic issue and, therefore treatment is usually not available for this condition. Not surprisingly, for such a common disorder, there is a considerable market for private treatments,
The ”Big 3” of treatment include finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole. The latter is usually used in conjunction with other treatments and is more often used for fungal infections. Both minoxidil and finasteride (or its cousin dutasteride) are effective in the majority of men
but, they are expensive (about £20-60 per month) and, sadly, when you stop treatment, the baldness will revert to the state it would have been within 12 months. The other option is hair transplants that can be very effective but also very costly: usually in the £5,000 bracket but sometimes even more! The much cheaper option is a wig! Modern wigs are not quite like the “slipped toupee” of comedy sitcoms and can be a very effective solution. Starting treatment for this problem needs careful consideration. The cost, the commitment, the side effects and the psychological impact all need to be thought out. There is more information on www.nhs.uk but be careful which websites you read – not all of them are impartial.

Grasping the Nettle!
No, please don’t, not literally! The stinging Nettle is a hidden treasure of the hedgerow, garden and wayside. Although not popular among children or keen gardeners due to the familiar sting, this common and memorable wild plant is a treasure trove of nutrients and has some surprising uses as a medicinal herb too.
Known mostly for its uncomfortable sting, the Nettle (Urtica dioica) is in fact very useful for several reasons. As the plant only likes growing on nutrient rich ground, it is full of useful nutrients, including absorbable iron. This is helpful in cases of anaemia and poor absorption of minerals. The leaves (ironically), have a natural antihistamine effect in the body, thus helping with symptoms of hay fever and other allergies. During the hay fever season, take it as a tea; as many as 6 mugs per day. It is a little bland tasting this way, but somewhat effective for relieving symptoms. The tea can easily be drunk when cooled down or mixed with something more aromatic, such as fennel or peppermint. Nettle leaf cream is also a way of administering the antihistamine effect directly on the skin.
Nettle seeds are used as a stimulant for those with
waning energy, they are quite a power bank of nutrients and energy rich ingredients. Start off with a small dose and build up slowly. Add them to morning cereal or smoothie.
Nettle extract is also used to neutralise uric acid in the body, which is very useful for those suffering with gout along with other herbs, such as celery and sour cherry.
As mentioned, the tea needs to be taken regularly to be effective in any condition. It is safe for children, if made to taste better, but can be disguised in fruit juice, although the colour resembles pond water. Nettle soup is another old tradition in this country and is very tasty too! Add to a base of onions and potato with seasoning and enjoy!

A famous midwife Ina May Gaskin once said, “Whenever and however, you give birth, your experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life.”
Pregnancy and birth are one of life’s miracles with the arrival of a new baby being particularly precious however sadly, we often hear stories of women who have been far from happy with their birth finding the birthing process long and painful.
Sharon Magrath is founder of Pure Serenity Hypnobirthing (also part of Pure Serenity Life Coaching), who offers a preparation for birth course with Hypnobirthing. Hypnobirthing can help promote the release of natural hormones in labour which in turn helps ease discomfort during birth and can shorten the length of labour.
“What is Hypnobirthing?” I hear you say.
Hypnobirthing originates from an observation made in the 1930’s by a British obstetrician named Grantley Dick Reid. He noticed that when a woman was calm and relaxed during her labour, she required little or no pharmaceutical pain relief. Dr Reid went on to pioneer a childbirth programme that taught relaxation techniques to eliminate stress and fear of childbirth which is now known in different formats today as Hypnobirthing.
Hypnobirthing includes a full programme of antenatal education including the physiology of labour and potential variations of labour and birth. The course gives women and their birth partners information on what to expect and how to deal with
complications should they arise. Simple relaxation techniques are taught and practiced by mothers and their birthing partner enabling them to remain calm and focussed throughout their birth. Birth partners have an important role to play and often feel more connected to their partner and confident in supporting the mother with her birth preferences as a result of attending the course.
It is important to note that Hypnobirthing is not pain relief or just for women who want a natural birth. The simple tools and techniques taught on the course help to reduce discomfort in labour and promote calm, these are tools that can be used for life and are relevant for every type of birth.
The benefits of attending an Antenatal Hypnobirthing course extend far beyond birth itself, helping women with other stressful and painful experiences and can help to promote emotional wellbeing.
Sharon (a former midwife and nurse) says, “I am passionate about supporting women and their partners to have a positive empowering birthing experience and believe this course offers huge opportunities for parents to take control and be confident in making informed choices about their birth. In my
experience, women who prepare for birth and ask questions are more likely to feel relaxed during birth which in turn promotes the release of oxytocin, the hormone required for labour to progress effectively.”
The Antenatal Hypnobirthing course is offered online via zoom or face to face in a group or 1-2-1 setting. The course is approximately 8-10 hours and is currently offered one evening each week over a period of 4 weeks. The course can be started any time after a woman reaches 20 weeks pregnant.
A 20% discount will be available for couples booking in July and August.
Other services offered as part of Pure Serenity Life Coaching include:
• A 6-week mindfulness parenting course called Beyond Birth which aims to support the emotional well-being of parents.
• Individual Life Coaching
• The Birth Awareness 3 Step Process which supports women who have experienced birth trauma.
If you are interested in finding out more about any of the courses, contact Sharon on 07427 720520 or email pureserenity50@gmail.com Instagram @pureserenity_ hypnobirthing

Minutes with the MP
By Helen Morgan – MP for North Shropshire
It was with great pride that I witnessed the official opening of our new Veterans’ Centre at the Orthopaedic Hospital earlier this spring. I have seen the great work carried out at the site firsthand and it was heart-warming to see the staff there getting the recognition they deserve during the visit by the Duchess of Edinburgh.
However, it also served as a reminder of how much more needs to be done to connect this fantastic hospital to the local area, wider region and country as a whole. As it stands, we have a first-class hospital being let down by third-class transport links.
That’s one of the reasons I have been campaigning in Parliament for the reopening of the railway line between Oswestry and Gobowen. Reinstating the old line and adding a stop at the Orthopaedic Hospital would help patients, staff and visitors as well as boosting the local economy.
Our orthopaedic hospital is nationally renowned for its world-class facilities and outstanding patient satisfaction and therefore we need to do everything possible to improve its accessibility.
Travelling from Oswestry to Gobowen should be a short trip, yet current infrastructure means this is only true if you have immediate access to a car. Vulnerable and elderly people, who make up a large proportion of the hospital’s patients, have very limited options. Meanwhile highly qualified staff are put off from applying to work at the hospital due to the poor commuting links that mean the only way to get home from a night shift is to drive.
Reconnecting the train line won’t be easy but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done. It is ridiculous that a town of Oswestry’s size is not connecting to the national rail network.
Sorting out our transport links would help hospitals, help high streets, help the environment and help to unlock Oswestry’s full potential.

A legal career can be within your reach with an apprenticeship
Embarking on a legal career is more accessible than ever before - with an apprenticeship giving you the experience without racking up thousands of pounds of student debt.
Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, which has offices across Shropshire, including in Oswestry, runs an apprenticeship programme which is proving to be very popular.
Emma Harrison, Learning and Development Manager, says there are many benefits of taking the apprenticeship route into law.
She says, “It takes about seven years from A-Levels to becoming a fully qualified solicitor, whether you go to university or take the apprenticeship route.
“The average debt for a law student coming out of university and going into either a trainee solicitor post or becoming a solicitor is about £58,000 - that is quite a significant amount of debt.
“With an apprenticeship, you get seven years of practical experience of working with a law firm whilst training and gaining your qualifications at the same time. And rather than ending up with a large debt, you actually get paid while you complete your apprenticeship.”
Erin Payne started at Lanyon Bowdler just over a year ago as a business administration apprentice.
“I just didn’t think a career in law was an option to me,” she says. “That traditional route of university is drilled into people and you don’t realise there are alternative ways of becoming a solicitor.”
Cameron Petch recently joined the firm as a paralegal apprentice and says he would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone thinking of embarking on a legal career.
“I had just finished my A-Levels and the university route never really appealed to me,” he says. “Law is so accessible now; you don’t need a degree to qualify and work your way up through the profession. I’m really excited about the future.”
You can listen to the latest edition of The Legal Lounge podcast to hear Emma, Erin and Cameron discussing their experience of apprenticeships by searching for ‘The Legal Lounge’ on your usual podcast provider or visiting www.lblaw.co.uk

How can I invest for my children?
By Paula Hurford, Wealth Management Consultant
How much does it cost to raise a child?
In 2022, raising a child from birth to the age of 18 cost a two-parent household
£157,562 and a single parent
£208,735.1
With a child’s everyday costs on the rise, it can be hard to look at the long-term costs that may come as they approach adulthood, such as a car, university fees, or a house deposit. But successful saving for your child’s future doesn’t have to break the bank and could really make a huge difference to them.
The secret? Start saving early! The longer the investment has to grow, the greater the potential benefit for your children will be. In addition, introducing your child to the concept of long-term investing at an early age can help build smart money habits for them to take into the future.
How can I give my child a great start in life?
Junior ISA (JISA): A tax-friendly option that anyone can pay into (parents, grandparents, godparents, etc.) and is set up by the parent or legal guardian.
There are two types; a Cash JISA and a Stocks and Shares JISA. You can pay up to £9,000 across both types in the current tax year and the money is held within the JISA until the child reaches 18 when it can be converted into an adult ISA with the same tax advantages.
Pension: Although it may be a long time before they can access it, children can have a pension as soon as they are born and setting one up can have significant tax advantages due to the government’s tax relief. Even a small contribution could grow into a substantial pot over time.
You can invest a maximum of £3,600 gross annually and, just like JISAs, a parent or legal guardian can set one up and anyone can pay into it. This may even help mitigate Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability for the contributor in certain circumstances.
If you’d like to know more about the smartest ways to save for your children’s financial future, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested
An investment placed into funds (equities) would not have the security of capital associated with a deposit account with a bank or building society.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.
Please note that St. James’s Place does not offer Cash ISAs.

Special guest speaker was Mr. Ken Roscoe from Stretton Old Hall Gardens, ably supported by his Head Gardener Stephen Gore.

Gardening
June in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
The days are getting longer and for the gardener it is a good job as there is so much to do this month. Perhaps the busiest month of all if you want to make the most of your garden. The risk of frosts and high winds should be over now, but as ever, be prepared and always keep one eye on the forecast.
When moving plants grown indoors to their outside homes, make sure you harden them off gradually, by placing outside in a sheltered spot during the day, gradually extending the period. It will prevent the sudden shock destroying all your hard work. In June you will be dealing with flowers that have finished, those that are getting a bit too large, and those that are just coming on and need care. Time to get those vegetable plants out in the kitchen garden, and if you have been planning well you may well be harvesting broad beans and early potatoes now or later in the month.
Wait for bulb foliage to die back completely before removing. Consider lifting some of the bulbs and tubers for repositioning in the autumn. Some of the early flowering plants in the garden will have passed their best, getting leggy and out of control. Aubrieta can start to look rather messy so cut it back, and geranium need
to be kept organised. Although not generally needing pruning, Clematis montana can go slightly mad and as it has stopped flowering, now might be a good time to cut it back into shape.
In the fruit garden, the fruits will have set, so you can see where to prune the plum and cherry trees to prevent them getting too big. You can expect the “June drop” where the tree naturally loses a proportion of the crop. Afterwards consider thinning out some of the growing fruit if quality is more important than quantity.
Hopefully you will have a water-butt. Use the water from this to water your flowering rhododendrons and azaleas. The hard water in this area will neutralise the acid in the soil and affect their growth. Do the same for blueberries which are extremely pH sensitive.

Changing garden trends
The changing face of gardens
The average garden has changed significantly over the last 50 years. In a physical sense, it has become smaller but, in more general terms, expectations have grown. In a small garden every square metre matters. Today’s contemporary garden might have an outside kitchen and possibly a retractable roof to serve as sunshade or umbrella and a moving water feature provides a soundscape to accompany the outdoor dining experience.
Alongside the shrinking space, our need for privacy has expanded. The addition of pleached trees – often called a ‘hedge on stilts’ – has become commonplace. They allow taller boundaries that blur the fence line, thus bringing seclusion without harsh enclosure.
Look at the plants
Gardens follow fashion and plant selection tells you a huge amount about the history and evolution of a garden. Before the 1980s, a garden border would be filled with perennial planting that might include asters, campanula,
delphiniums, hardy geraniums, helianthus, geums, lupins, peonies, pulmonaria, salvias and veronica. These provided spring and summer colour but would die down for winter. Newer or updated borders might incorporate a number of shrubs to give year-round shape. There could be some structural forms in terms of sculpture or topiary. There might be evergreen giant cones and maybe some roses, rather than an entire bed dedicated to perennials.
The palette of plants available to us has extended dramatically over the decades. Ornamental grasses and ‘new perennial’ planting, including naturalistic swathes of perennials in subdued colours, are now likely to replace some of the more traditional herbaceous plants. This style of planting has ecology at its heart and the layers of plants tend to be interwoven to form patterns that might be found in the natural world.
A contemporary border will place even more emphasis on forms, shapes and colour that last for longer. Some borders now feature a restricted palette of plant varieties, perhaps chosen for the foliage colour or shape. For example, an entire bed filled with ‘strappy’ shaped leaves in plain green, a shady bed filled with just one variety of fern, or foliage that contrasts such as burgundy and yellow. The gardener will be ruthless when interlopers try to seed themselves amongst such a carefully designed setting.
Making a comeback
Island beds filled with small conifers and perhaps a few rocks were a feature of the 1970s. Over the years we have tended to shun the idea of including these within a planting scheme, perhaps because some of the dwarf conifers grow larger than anticipated. They are beginning to make a comeback, however as we learn to embrace their charm. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show tends to set the trend and over the last few years these old favourite plants have been featured and applauded, along with hydrangeas, rhododendrons, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

WHY DIVERSIFICATION MATTERS MORE THAN EVER
We all know that to stay healthy we need to eat a balanced diet. The same goes for your investments - a mix of assets can go a long way.
This is known as diversification, and in the financial world means spreading your investments across a range of different assets (such as shares, property or cash for example).
The reason this matters is because diversifying your investments can potentially earn you higher returns, and keep your savings in line with, or above, inflation.
How does it work? Well, not all assets are impacted in the same way by the same events. The value of gold, for instance, may be impacted differently to property prices during times of financial disruption. Furthermore, companies that are in different sectors, different geographical locations or are different sizes are likely to perform in differing ways too.
Incorporating “negatively correlated investments” into your mix can also be a sensible strategy. Think of it as an ice-cream van owner who sells scarves or umbrellas for the less sunny days. This approach helps minimise the impact of market fluctuations and ensures your finances weather any changes.
However, as important as it is to diversify, it’s equally essential not to over-diversify. Having a range of investments can only reduce your risk up to a point, and holding too many means the return they could offer in the long run won’t have as significant an impact.
If you’re looking to invest your money or want to learn more about diversification, consider speaking with a professional and impartial financial adviser. With their expertise and knowledge, a financial adviser can help you make informed decisions about your investments, so you can feel confident in your financial future.
Our friendly team of independent financial advisers specialise in investments and are here to help. Call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 to arrange a free 60-minute consultation.

with GHP Legal’s Alison Peters
Does the split of fi nances depend on length of marriage in a divorce?
Q: We have been married just one year, but it isn’t working out and I want the chance to meet someone else to have children with whilst I still can. The problem is that I moved into my husband’s house with him a year before we got married, and although I have paid my way since then, my friend says I won’t get a share of the house in a divorce settlement because it’s in his name. Can you explain how a settlement will work, please?
A: There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to a settlement as each case is determined on its own individual facts. However, the longer a couple are together the more likely it is that their finances have become mixed. So even if you are considering a simplified no-fault divorce, it is still advantageous to seek legal advice when it comes to sharing out the finances, and whether or not any money or property changes hands it may be extremely important for you to enter into a ‘Clean Break’ Order.
The longer a marriage has lasted, the more likely it is that the court will decide that all assets need to be equally split between the divorcing parties, irrespective of where these assets came from. If there are children involved this will again be taken into consideration.
With regard to a ‘short term’ marriage, such as yours would appear to be, the court may be more likely to move away from an equal division of the assets. Therefore, if your husband purchased the property prior to you living with him the court is unlikely to split the matrimonial pot 50/50, but that also does not necessarily mean you should walk away with nothing either.
You should make an appointment with a solicitor to discuss your options based on the facts of your case.
