Carson Complex A Carson City Council meeting in the state of California was held on July 5th, 2017 located at the Carson Civic Center. The main purpose of this meeting was to discuss the disadvantages of marijuana dispensaries in the city of Carson. Since it is their community of the city and the youth, Carson Complex Key Club participated in this meeting. Members heard a variety of stories including drugged driving, domestic abuse, loss of jobs, and the need for more addiction treatment services. This event was very interesting, the Carson City Council gave us a voice in one of the main issues in our modern day, it benefits our club because it proves to us that the educated deserves to speak their opinion in issues we face as a city. “It was a great experience being able to make a difference in our community and representing the youth within itâ€? Jannely NuĂąuz, attendant of meeting.

West Torrance On Friday August 4th, volunteers of the West High Key Club gathered at the South Bay Classic Golf Tournament held in Palos Verdes. At this event, members were divided into three groups of tagging the golf clubs, loading the golf bags into carts, and lastly helping to unload the golf clubs. Splitting the volunteers allowed and challenged the members of the WHS Key Club to both volunteer as well as interact with other participants and volunteers. According to Adrianne Bunye- the Vice President of the West High Key Club-, “It was [a] long and tiring event but it was incredibly fun. The view was great and the people are nice. The South Bay Classic Golf Tournament may have been backbreaking with carrying all the golf bags but it was definitely worth helping our fellow neighbors. Overall, we are happy to say that the event was a huge success!

Narbonne This month of August, Narbonne Key Club volunteered at Redondo Beach for a beach cleanup event and social. Although only a few members attended the event, the few members that volunteered picked up a lot of wrappers, plastic bottles, and other items throughout the beach. After the members cleaned for over an hour, they all swam in the water and had a small social afterwards. During the social, volunteers were walking along the rocks and even played with small crabs on the shore. Overall, this was a pretty successful event and we hope to do something like this again soon!

Mary Star This month, our Mary Star President, Hailey Jaramilla and Vice-President, Mahjanea Best arranged a Key Club Board Meeting for Mary Star Key Club at Big Nick’s Pizza in San Pedro. The meeting was beneficial towards our board members to be able to still engage and communicate towards the duties and responsibilities of our position, as well as for the upcoming events during the school year. The board members discussed upcoming events such as a Hiccups Fundraiser, a Handel’s Ice Cream Fundraiser, club bonding days towards the school year, improvement on club member engagement, as well as advertising and recruiting new members for the 2017-2018 term. Discussion towards the topics of our club goals and future events benefited within the communication and further engagement and involvement towards Mary Star Key Club. Hailey Jaramilla, our president, said “I’m looking forward to having more events and fundraising events towards our club.” This meeting was able to allow us to communicate during summer hours and further look into the 2017-2018 Key Club Year.

North Torrance This month on July 1, North High Key Club volunteered at the Madrona Marsh Preserve from 8:45 a.m-12:00 p.m. Volunteers worked to protect the preserve, picked up any trash and removed non-native plants. This experience helped us meet a lot of different kind of people and expanded our knowledge about our community. One of our volunteers, Alexis Kimura, says, “you learn more from typical biology class and it helps in informing of how to help the environment.” We think that this event helped our volunteers learn more about their community and it we definitely would consider volunteering at the madrona Marsh again!

Mira Costa Mira Costa’s Key Club was up bright and early on the morning of July 4th! Members volunteered at the annual Village Runner event, a great way to support athletes in the South Bay of all ages. The members participated in various tasks, from registration, handing out t-shirts, and timing the runners. It was also wonderful to see 19 North Key Club members participating! Costa member Hope Kim said, “Being able to interact with so many people at the event, from adults to adorable little kids, was an experience I will never forget.” It was great to see members enjoying themselves.
