ISLAND HOPPING Board the local postal boat on Island hopping in Solund, Bulandet and Værlandet. Lonely Planet has named the round trip among thousands of islands, islets and skerries one of the best in Norway! Travel the postal boat route among the multitude of Solund’s islands and narrow sounds. Visit idyllic Gåsvær and take a stroll in Bulandet, where you can visit local museums, viewpoints and outdoor artworks. Experience “Nordsjøporten”, a road with six spectacular sea bridges between Bulandet and Værlandet. Solund’s local postal boat connects the island kingdoms of Solund and Askvoll during the summer. The postal boat travels between Hardbakke in Solund and Bulandet in Askvoll. A crew member will guide you during the trip, pointing out many hidden treasures. When you reach Bulandet, you’ll have time to look around on your own. If you’d like more time to enjoy the scenery and explore the islands, we recommend spreading the island-hopping trip over several days. There are several places to stay in Solund, Værlandet and Bulandet; you can find an overview at en.fjordkysten.no Island-hopping trips for groups are available all year round on request. “Island hopping lite” from Hardbakke to Gåsvær and back to Hardbakke is also available all year. Contact mail@fjordkysten.no or ring +47 57 74 30 00 for more information and bookings.

ISLAND HOPPING SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR BULANDET The postal boat from Solund docks at Nikøy quay in Bulandet, where you’ll have time to look around independently. We recommend starting with lunch at the cafe before hiring a bike or exploring the islands on foot. Follow the village road up from the shop and to the right. After approx. 500 m, you cross a small bridge. Continue following the road until you come to a well-signed crossroads. If you take the road to the left, you’ll come to Bulandet “Ungdomshus”, where you’ll find ‘Bulandet Temapark’, a local museum that provides a good introduction to life in the island community. For great views over all of Bulandet, continue past ‘Bulandet Temapark’ and follow the path up to the Halsøyhågen viewpoint. As well as stunning views, there are picnic tables, benches and a map of the islands. At Hillersøyhaugen, you’ll find busts of Berte Hillersøy and Hansine Tistel, who, together with schoolmaster Ole Rogne, rescued seven of the crew of the Tønsberg schooner Gugner in February 1885. It went down by Sengskjeret, south of Bulandet, after battling in a storm for several days. In recognition of their exploits, Berte (25) and Hansine (21) were each awarded the Norwegian Lifesaving Medal, Second Class, for Heroic Deeds. The busts were made by ceramic artist Ingun Dahlin and stand on plinths of ‘Black Beauty’ stone from Værlandet. SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR VÆRLANDET Værlandet Handel at the ferry quay in Værlandet offers bike hire and serves as a Visitor Point with suggested hikes and maps. From the ferry quay, it’s approximately 1.8 km to idyllic Værøyhamna and its beautiful wharfside boathouses. Værlandet Havhotell is also nearby. The North Sea Trail on Værlandet is an excellent hike on a clearly waymarked trail, and takes approx. 1 hour 30 mins. The Klettane hills are Værlandet’s most characteristic feature. A chain has been installed along the path leading to the top of Høgkletten to ensure a safe walk up to this special viewpoint at 163 m. The path turns off the North Sea Trail and is clearly signed. 6

MILLSTONE PARK Join the stone adventure! Millstone Park in Hyllestad is an outdoor museum in the largest stone quarry landscape from the Viking period and Middle Ages in Northern Europe. We take you back to a time when there was a high level of activity in Hyllestad! In hundreds of quarries, stonecutters extracted millstone after millstone. Everyone needed millstones. Without millstones, there was no flour – and no food! Hundreds of thousands of millstones left Hyllestad and were sold across Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This was big industry, involving skilled craftsmen, expert traders and a lot of money! At Millstone Park we take you on a tour through the stone quarries. After the tour, you can try stone carving, mill grain, bake bread, make soapstone jewellery – or relax by the fire and enjoy something to eat and drink.
OPENING TIMES 18 June – 14 August, Tuesday – Sunday 10.00 – 16.00. You can visit the park independently outside these opening times. PRICE: Adults NOK 60 / children (7–17 years) NOK 30 / Children (under 7) FREE REFRESHMENTS: We serve millstone bread, pancakes and coffee. When you step into one of our small log houses, you step into the life of a 19th century Sunnfjord inhabitant. Along the paths between turfed roofs, hayracks and a small mill brook, you get a sense of the everyday life of our great-great-great-grandparents. In the herb garden you can take in the aroma of hops, caraway and wild garlic. The open-air museum displays cultural heritage and everyday life from the inner Sunnfjord villages. With a total of 32 historical buildings, you can experience a traditional smallholding, a homestead and a mountain farm. Down by the lake there is a boathouse, where you can go for a swim and say hello to our goats. The indoor section has rotating cultural heritage exhibitions, a gift shop and an ample selection of ice cream. In the forest surrounding the museum you will find educational hiking trails. During the summer, we offer customised family-friendly tours in Norwegian or English.

Ludvig Eikaas (1920 - 2010) was a modern art pioneer, and is considered one of the most influential Norwegian post-war visual artists. The Eikaas Gallery houses a considerable portion of his work. The rest may be found in Copenhagen, New York, Paris, Florence and other Norwegian art museums. As a graphic artist, painter, illustrator and sculptor, Eikaas remained exploratory, experimental and spontaneous. He had a preference for untraditional tools and materials – he was, among other, the first to use hard plastic in his sculptures. The Eikaas Gallery displays rotating exhibitions based on a collection of more than 850 artworks. We have a café, a jetty and our very own beach by Jølstravatnet.

ASTRUPTUNET Nikolai Astrup produced some iconic portraits of his native village. When visiting Astruptunet, you can stand at the very place where he had his easel, and discover how these surroundings affect you.
The beautiful artist home of Engel (1892 - 1966) and Nikolai Astrup (1880 - 1928) is idyllically located by Jølstravatnet. Nikolai Astrup is one of Norway’s most famous painters, and just in the last five years, his work has been exhibited in England, Germany, USA and Sweden. Engel Astrup’s textile art has in recent years been brought to light through exhibitions, and her central role at Astruptunet has become an important part of the story of the residence. The on-going restoration work in the garden will help revive Nikolai Astrup’s art, and will allow you to walk among both rhubarb and fruit trees that he himself used as a motif again and again. In the newly renovated café you can enjoy svele and coffee with a view of Jølstravatnet.

JØLSTRAMUSEET The hosts of Jølstramuseet, Heidi and Frode, offer the perfect combination of art, rural history, good atmosphere and local food. The founder of Jølstramuseet, Eivind Fossheim, had a strong interest in the history, everyday objects, and architectural tradition of Jølster. He wanted to create a rural museum where objects and houses from Jølster could be collected and displayed for his descendants. The gallery in the barn hosts diverse exhibitions. Exhibitions featuring different artists, both local and national, are organised throughout the season. Restaurant Låven serves an à la carte menu based on local seasonal ingredients. Raw ingredients are lovingly and skilfully transformed into a glorious experience celebrating local food. The food is based on the raw ingredients available in the surrounding area. The restaurant’s signature dish is brown trout from Jølstra, served bone-free.

THE BLACK FRIDAY MUSEUM On February 9. 1945, a force of Allied Bristol Beaufighter aircraft suffered many losses, during an attack on the German destroyer Z33 and its escorting vessels; the operation was called “’Black Friday’” by the Allied survivors. The Beaufighters and their escort of Mustang Mk III fighters from 65 Squadron RAF, were intercepted by sixteen Focke-Wulf Fw 190s. It became the biggest air battle over Norway during WWII. The museum exhibition is put together with photos, film, interviews and possessions from aircrafts, ship and people, overlooking the site where it happened.

The little brown wooden chapel almost merges into the background on the wooded headland in Viksdalsvatnet lake. The chapel replaced a stave church that had stood there since the Middle Ages. The chapel is quite crudely built, and different types of materials have been used. Its interior has not changed much since 1805. The new cog-jointed church on beautiful Øyra. The headland in the beautiful Viksdalsvatnet lake is called Øyra, and legend has it that there was a church here as early as the 12th century, but the first mention of this church in a written source is in papal accounts from 1327. In 1805, the stave church was pulled down and replaced by a new church. The chancel and nave are made from timber, while the porch is built in the stave technique and then clad. The rough carpentry and reuse of materials give the impression that the church may have been built by the locals themselves. Staves from the old church have been used in the tower, and the corner posts in the porch are probably also taken from the old church. The altarpiece and pulpit are painted in the same colours and date from the time the church was built. The year 1805 is inscribed on the altarpiece’s pediment. Hestad chapel has belonged to the National Trust of Norway since 1917, when the Trust took it over from the 17 farmers who owned it free of charge.

RANGE OF MOUNTAIN PEAKS BETWEEN FØRDEFJORDEN AND DALSFJORDEN Distinctive peaks lie in a row between Førdefjorden and Dalsfjorden. They rise sharply from Førdefjord, but have a gentler appearance towards Dalsfjorden and Bygstad. Hiking options and routes are varied, and many can be started from several different points. Storehesten Storehesten (1,209m a.s.l.) (also called Kvamshesten in recent times) is the name of the most distinctive and majestic mountain in Sunnfjord, and is located between Førdefjorden and Dalsfjorden. From the top of Storehesten (1,209m a.s.l.), you can see the sea to the west, the Ålfotbreen glacier to the north, the Jostedalsbreen glacier to the east, and the mountains around Bergen to the south. From the south, the pronounced, rocky profile that rises from the surrounding landscape can be said to resemble a horse. As a hiking destination, this peak is suitable for both young and older people, as well as families with children who are 10 or older, but experienced mountain hikers can also challenge themselves here with alternative routes. Blægja Blegja (1,304m a.s.l.) is the highest peak on the Heilefjell massif. The steep face of Heilefjellet, and the characteristic Heilevangstaurane are impressive, especially from the north side of Førdefjorden. Blegja is known as the Queen of the Sunnfjord mountains, and not without cause. The walk up is challenging, but this makes the experience all the greater. From the top, you can enjoy the sight of Sogn og Fjordane’s steep mountain world from above! There are fjords, mountains, glaciers, islands and sea as far as the eye can see.

GLACIER HIKING AND ASTRUPSEGGA The village of Skei, at the eastern end of Jølstravatnet, is a wonderful starting point for walks and adventures for the whole family. Here you can stay at Thon Hotel Jølster, or at one of the many campsites in the area, and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Haugabreen Haugabreen is an easily-accessed glacier arm in Jostedalsbreen National Park. Reaching Haugabreen means driving through the stunning Stardalen landscape, and then a small hike is all that’s needed to reach the glacier itself. Bre & Fjell organise hikes throughout the summer, using Thon Hotel Jølster as a starting point. On the way to the glacier, the guides explain the glacier’s role in the formation of the local landscape, and about local glacier history. At the foot of the glacier, visitors can equip themselves with crampons, ice axes and rope to climb the glacier. Astrupsegga Astrupsegga is a climbing route that overlooks the area where the famous Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup once lived and worked. The route starts at Kjøsnes, in the majestic Kjøsnesfjord, and a view towards Jølstravatnet quickly opens up.
Bre & Fjell’s experienced guides take you on the experience of a lifetime. The climb itself is seven rope lengths (about 280m in total), and the most difficult point is 4- on a scale from 1 to 9. Most of the climbing is easy, and this trip lets you focus on mastering the mountain and enjoying the magnificent scenery. The icing on the cake, however, is the view from the top – it’s one of the most magnificent views Jølster has to offer. The path back to Skei town centre runs across light terrain via Vikastøylen.

It’s a peaceful journey along protected waterways, past waterfalls and a quiet fjord arm. Children and adults alike can experience trout fishing at its best, and wander along beautiful trails, past waterfalls and rapids. You can also hire boats and canoes, and there’s lots of good activities available for those who like to hike in the mountains. The path runs along one arm of the world’s longest fjord, Sognefjorden, before if snakes up the steep valley sides towards the mountain. The path then follows the protected Gaularvassdrag watercourse, which is famous for its many waterfalls, also has many rapids and calm mountain lakes. Along parts of the watercourse, a waterfall path has been built to make the most breathtaking parts more accessible. The stretch The Gaularfjellet National Scenic Route, between Balestrand - Eldalsosen Moskog an Eldalsosen and Sande is 130km long. (Norwegian national road 55/13/610). The stretch between Mel and Mjell on Gaularfjellet is closed in winter.

SCENIC ROUTE GAULARFJELLET
STOPPING POINTS ALONG THE ROUTE: UTSIKTEN (THE VIEW) From Vetlefjorden, the road turns up towards the mountain, and its highest point at Nystølvatnet. The stopping point at Utsikten offers panoramic views of the valley and the mighty mountain scenery. LIKHOLEFOSSEN (LIKHOLE WATERFALL) The Gaularvassdraget watercourse is wild and powerful, and a trip across the resilient steel bridge across Likhole waterfall lets you get up close and personal with the power of the water, especially when the water is high. From the bridge, you can walk the ‘waterfall path’ along the protected watercourse. HESTAD CHAPEL The old Hestad chapel is beautifully located on a narrow strip of land between Viksdalsvatnet and Hestadfjorden. VALLESTADFOSSEN (VALLESTAD WATERFALL) This powerful waterfall, at the mouth of Haukedalsvatnet, is an impressive sight.

STORM WATCHING Winters along the Fjord Coast are often mild, green and stormy, with fantastic winter light. November to February is high season for storms!
STORM-WATCHING TOURS
There is occasional cold weather with snow, but this is unusual here. In contrast, windy days are in good supply! The region is the stormiest in southern Norway, and boasts spectacular nature experiences.
Two- or three-day tours with good food, guided storm-watching experiences, transport and accommodation.
Some days are clear and sunny, but stormy weather is usually just around the corner. Seeing the waves crash against the shore from a viewpoint where the fjord meets the open sea is a fascinating sight. Due to the mild climate you can go walking year round. If you need to escape the wet and windy weather, there are local galleries and museums to visit. A comfortable stay is an important part of the experience. Light the fire, snuggle under a blanket and enjoy a hot drink with your nearest and dearest. Fish and shellfish are at their best in winter, and our restaurants offer top-class food experiences. You’ll find a high standard of hospitality everywhere you go – the abrasive coastal climate stands in strong contrast to the friendly people waiting to welcome you. Sunnfjord, nestled between the ocean to the west, and the highest peaks in Scandinavia to the east, is an undiscovered winter gem. When the storms from the west roll in across the land, Sunnfjord’s proximity to the Jostedalsbreen glacier means that it snows. And it snows a lot. Sunnfjord is one of the areas in Norway that sees the most precipitation. Sunnfjord’s terrain is varied, with slopes of different difficulties, perfect for those who are new to skiing and for those who want something a little more challenging. The peaks and valleys in all directions mean that it’s always possible to find good snow and accessible slopes, even some time after the snow has fallen. There are a number of carparks in the area which are well-facilitated for people setting off on ski trips. Crowds are simply not an issue in Sunnfjord. There’s enough snow here for everyone.

Here, there are peaks of between 1,200 and 1,800m a.s.l., with fine ski slopes for all experience levels. You simply can’t run out of things to do here!

FRESHWATER FISHING IN SUNNFJORD There is a long tradition of salmon and trout fishing in Sunnfjord, both for sustenance and as a recreational activity. Experiences anglers can fish for salmon, and first-timers can try fishing in one of the many trout lakes in the area. Fishing licences can be purchased for the various areas at inatur.no. Local schemes exist in some areas. Nausta – the salmon-rich Nausta river is located in Naustdal. Both salmon and sea trout can be fished in Nausta. The salmon and sea trout fishing stretch is 12.4km. There are two waterfalls along this stretch; Naustdalsfossen, which is 1.5km above the border between river and sea, and Hovefossen, which is 2.9km further up the river.
Vonavatnet – in Naustedalen, on the edge of the Naustdal-Gjengedal Protected Landscape. In recent years, cultivation work and targeted fishing have increased the quality and size of the fish. The area and the water are easily accessed, and are also a good starting point for hiking and mountain walks. Jølstravatnet – the combination of an inflow of cold water from the Jostedalsbreen glacier, a rich nutrient base, and a 30km long lake with a maximum depth of 200m make this the ideal home for Jølster trout. Fishing in this water is well regulated, and the quality of the fish is very good. 15 tonnes of Jølster trout is fished annually. Each year at the beginning of June, the Jølster Trout Festival hosts a fishing competition, with the whole of Jølstravatnet as its arena. Gaularvassdraget, Haukedalsvatnet og Viksdalsvatnet – the Gaularvassdraget watercourse has a salmon stretch of 14.5km. There are a number of salmon ladders, and the one at Osfossen dates from the 1870s, making it the oldest in the country. Further up the watercourse, Haukedalsvatnet and Viksdalsvatnet are a few of the good starting points for trout fishing. Many options – The rivers and lakes mentioned here are only a few examples of the many possible fishing locations in the area. Talk with the locals, or with your hosts, for tips on the best fishing spots. Remember your fishing licence! 42
