spend a lot of time with entrepreneurs. They are really terrific people to hang with, because they see every problem as an opportunity and always look at the world through a positive lens. We all know that entrepreneurs built America and have had a positive impact on Delray Beach as well. It’s the risk takers who move the needle, who identity opportunities and give their blood, sweat, tears and treasure when they believe in something. But while it’s important to celebrate entrepreneurs and visionaries (which we do every month in Atlantic Ave) it’s also important to recognize that the entrepreneurial spirit exists in places we don’t often stop and consider: i.e. academia, the nonprofit world and government. Delray has been blessed to have entrepreneurial innovators in our schools, charitable organizations and at City Hall. It’s critical that we celebrate these innovators as well. Next month, we will lose one of our non-profit icons as Joe Gillie, the longtime CEO of the Delray Center for the Performing Arts at Old School Square retires after more than two decades of service. Without Joe, Delray would not be a two time All America City. Without Joe, maybe our cultural arts center would not be the year-round gathering spot that is has become. It’s just hard to imagine Delray without Joe. And hopefully, we won’t. Because a community that values its future respects its past. That respect should include historic buildings—no doubt, but it should also include respect for those that built modern day Delray. Joe will laugh when I refer to him as historic—but he is an historic figure in Delray Beach. He was at the helm of arguably our most valuable cultural resource for most of its history and has done a great job with a small but extremely dedicated and talented staff. He was also the director/conductor/boss of bosses for all of our All America City bids and those competitions gave this town its swagger and built community because it brought together disparate groups of people who shared a love of Delray in common. Joe has been a visionary, a friend and someone who always looked beyond his own interests and toward the betterment of all Delray Beach. He’s a civic entrepreneur. We need more those. Enjoy this summer edition of Atlantic Ave Magazine and remember please shop, dine and seek out local services especially during the long, hot summer. Jeff Perlman, Editor

Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and the Palm Beach Center for Oral Surgery and Dental Implants specializes in dental implants, wisdom teeth, oral rehabilitation, as well as facial trauma and reconstructive surgery. I am on staff at Bethesda Memorial Hospital and maintain a position on the board of directors of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation. I enjoy being a key opinion leader for implant companies as well as volunteering time at the Caridad Health Center in Boynton Beach. My wife, Nicole, and I frequent Atlantic Avenue and continue to enjoy our life here in Delray Beach. If I may be of assistance I am only a call away. Be well my friends! I

am Dr. Elan Schrier. I live in Delray Beach and have lived in South Florida for the last 23 years. Ever since I had a life changing experience at age 12, I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor! I have had my practice in Delray Beach for for over 3 years and we are located in Pineapple Grove. My mission is to change people’s lives through gentle NUCCA adjustments and allow the body to heal from inside out. I am the only NUCCA doctor in Delray Beach and one of only 10 in Florida. The concept is simple- we do a highly detailed exam of your posture and nervous system to measure any misalignments down to less than one degree. Then we do a specific gentle adjustment (there’s no twisting, cracking, or popping) to correct your exact misalignment. With NUCCA care, we can actually measure before and after changes. I see patients with countless health concerns recover- migraines, TMJ, back and neck pain, sleep disorders and even emotional setbacks. Call for a consultation and see if you would be a good candidate for NUCCA care. Schrier Family Chiropractic 315 NE 2nd Ave. - Delray Beach FL 561-445-2648 www.drelan.com dr.elanschrier@gmail.com

Posh Properties LLC

I

am Jerilyn Walter, born January 1st, at12:02 a.m., I started my life in celebration, a southern California native and former Playboy Bunny. My first job was at 16, working the graveyard shift at the local diner, at 6:30 a.m., I ran a cleaning service, while attending junior college, dropping crews off on my way to classes and picking them up on my way home. In 1984, I successfully started and ran Medical Collections Services, Inc., based in Orange County, CA, which soon transitioned into my appointment as a California Receiver and Trustee for Arizona. I have called South Florida home for more than 15 years and in 2000, I followed my beloved Grandmother into Real Estate. I found most agencies had no desire to create and build relationships with their customers, and were only concerned about the immediate sale, not the long term goals of the customer, and so in 2012 I started my own brokerage, Posh Properties, LLC. Being my own broker has given me the freedom to work alongside professional agents that not only have the work ethic I require, they “step up to the plate” when necessary. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in August for $50 or less.

es, yes and more yes. I’ve had the past few years to perfect my technique and I think I might be able to last all night, and maybe two nights, if I play my cards right. National Bargain Hunting Week is August 3 through 8 and I’ve got the most delicious bargain for you. Tastemakers is back and you are cordially invited to grab the troupe and head downtown for a restaurant crawl. There are 18 restaurants this year that look forward to offering you a delightful sample of food and crafty cocktail and include 50 Ocean, BurgerFi, Caffe Luna Rosa, Caffe Martier, Cabana El Rey, Deck 84, El Camino, FY&I, Lemongrass, Max’s Harvest, Mellow Mushroom, Mussel Beach, Solita, Smoke BBQ, Taverna Opa, The Office, Vic & Angelo’s and Ziree. To last through the night, I’ve learned you must: pick your codiners wisely (no slow pokes), pre-gaming is a dangerous idea, and plan your route so you can hit all the spots. It is possible to visit all restaurants in one night so get ready because you can do it! Tastemakers passports are $30 cash and available at each of the participating restaurants, and the bargain continues because you can use the passports through the end of September to receive special offers and discounts at each restaurant. The menus look amazing and I’m SO happy that the truffle train has left Delray because we’ve got some serious eats to get down on this year. Tastemakers is held along the Avenue from A1A to West Atlantic. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077 for more information.

always-asked-on-dates Miss Amazing rock star. I wonder if the founders knew what they were creating when the hunkered down at the sleepy seaside town, other than “dang, this place is hot.” August is What Will be Your Legacy Month and instead of wondering, let’s hop on the “Ride and Remember” Trolley Tour on August 8 and get our knowledge on. You’ll be privy to not only a chauffeured ride in a trolley (toot, toot), but also colorful stories of the personalities and happenings that influenced the growth of the city. The tour does more than just give facts because it draws rides back in time with interactive, personalized stories of the city’s interesting origins and developments

through five historic districts. It’s like the city comes alive in a way you never knew! The two-hour tour leaves at 10 a.m. from the Spady Museum and costs $20 per person. So hop on the trolley and learn a little Delray legacy and figure out how you’re going to make your own! The Spady Museum is located at 170 N.W. Fifth Ave. Visit wwwspadymuseum.com or call (561) 279-8883 for more information.

ummer sun, summer fun and summer deals! August is Happiness Happens month and I’m just about ready for a swift amount of happiness, so let the food fun begin. 50 Ocean is your prime, oceanfront din-

ing locale and they’re dishing up three-course prix-fixe menus for lunch and dinner that leave your stomach and wallet happily full. For only $20, Monday through Saturday, you can enjoy lunch and chow down on artisan romaine salad, chicken BLT, surf ‘n turf tacos, beignets with dulce de leche crème, and more. Dinner is $29 per person and options include Napoleon with roasted beets and a goat cheese mousse, Pomodoro with chicken or shrimp, Wahoo grilled and steamed in a banana leaf, and more. Both special menus are available Monday through Saturday and there’s complimentary valet for lunch during the week. Winner, winner, three-course (lunch and) dinner. As if you needed more of a bonus, 50 Ocean has the best views of our pristine beach and their bar is a freaking fish tank! Hellooooo, head there immediately for a super happy Monday Funday Lunchday. 50 Ocean is located at 50 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.50ocean.com or call (561) 278-3364 for more information and to make reservations.

eel like going on an adventure but don’t have the funds? Do not fret, my fellow adventure lover, because it’s super easy to mind travel and feel like you’re on an adventure in your own backyard. August is American Adventures Month and there’s quite a jazzy lineup at the Arts Garage that will make you feel like you’re in a different place and time, no passport required. There’s Latin jazz by Oriente on August 1 that features funky, guitar-driven tumbaos, blazing harmonic brass and explosive Afro-Latin percussion. Fushu Daiko takes the stage on August 8 and will fill the air with Taiko drumming, which is a musical art form that builds on a more than 2,600-year-old tradition of Japanese drumming. There’s even the African Queen Radio Theatre on August 19 and 20 that is a production adapted from the 1951 adventure film starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. The performances and musicians are promised to provide an exciting cross-cultural experience that crosses boundaries and connects cultures. Look at you go on your adventures! Tickets start at $25 per person and did I mention that you are encouraged to bring your own tasty beverages and food (themed picnic anyone?)! The Arts Garage is located at 180 N.E. First St. Please visit www.artsgarage.org or call (561) 450-6357 for more information or to purchase tickets.

I

feel there is a distinct way a sandwich should be made. Toasted bread is a must, a good meat-to-vegetable ratio is key, and it must have some sort of gooey, drippy sauce. In my opinion, paninis are the way to go. August is National Panini Month and if you’re interested in trying the perfect sandwich, head to Caffe Martier where you will not only enjoy a delicious meal, but also a really delightful environment. Caffe Martier is dishing up paninis with a mixed green salad and a chickpea salad (SO delicious), and you’re welcome to enjoy at an outside table or inside by the piano (piano!). Sink your teeth into the Mediterranean panini with feta cheese, tomatoes, zatar and olive oil served with hummus and babaganoush for $11.50. The chicken and brie panini is also heavenly with brie, chicken and tomatoes with a pesto mayo for $11.50. If you’re feeling fiery, order the spicy tuna panini with albacore tuna mixed with cilantro, jalapenos, lemon and mayo with fontina cheese for $12. Or, go with a classic: Italian panini melt with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and black olive pesto for $10. Don’t pass up the drink menu because you know you’ll be thirsty! Caffe Martier is located at 411 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.caffemartierdelray.com or call (561) 450-6169 for more information.

‘National Night Out’ Rally to Take Stand Against Crime

The Delray Beach Police Department is inviting neighborhoods throughout the city to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide on Tuesday, Aug. 4 2015 for the “32nd Annual National Night Out”

crime and drug prevention event. From 7 to 10 p.m. residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights to show their support for this event and to spend the evening outside with their neighbors, community groups, public safety officers, and their city officials. “If the people in the community come together and know each other, there can be a healthy exchange of information between them and the police and hopefully we can get information to help solve crimes and maybe even prevent crimes.” Chief Jeffrey Goldman said. The Delray Beach Police Department, participating for the first time, will be hosting a Rally at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, 201 West Atlantic Avenue. There will be activities, music, food and entertainment. Come meet your city commission members, Delray Beach Police command staff and city officials. There will be demonstrations from Delray Beach Police SWAT, K-9, Traffic (motorcycle unit) and the Police Explorers. Please contact Officer Gary Ferreri at 561-243-7820 or Officer Jonathan Rusczyk at 561-243-7602 if you have additional questions about the event.

Gotta See

O

f all the dog days of summer, August is the doggiest. Still, there is a big batch of new movies for your consideration. Maybe a few will even be good. August 7 Yet another Marvel Comic-based adventure is “The Fantastic Four.” This is a “re-imagining of Marvel’s 1961 original,” which is the longest-running superhero team. The new faces are Miles Teller as Mr., Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human; Kate Mara as Sue Storm/ Invisible; Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing; Tony Kebble as Victor von Doom/ Dr. Tim and Blake Nelson as scientist Harvey Elder, aka Mole Man. Josh Frank (“Chronicle”) directs. Beware those old high school friends. “The Gift” is a thriller that marks the writing and directorial debut of Joel Edgerton, who also plays Gordo, a high school acquaintance of Simon (Jason Bateman), who did something bad 20 years ago. Simon is happily married to Robyn (Rebecca Hall), but that is about to change thanks to something Simon had pushed out of his mind.

Kristen Stewart “AMERICAN ULTRA”

“Shaun the Sheep Movie” sounds fairly self-explanatory. This is a stopmotion animated puppet movie jointly written and directed by Richard Starzak and Mark Burton (“Madagascar”). Shaun decides to take the day off and heads to the Big City. On the way he encounters a Farmer, a Caravan and a very steep hill. The characters were first seen in “A Close Shave” with Wallace and Gromit. Is there anything Meryl Streep cannot do? Find out in “Ricki and the Flash,” in which she plays a rock ‘n’ roll guitar heroine named Ricki Randazzo. Real-life rock star Rick Springfield plays Flash member Greg, who has the hots for Ricki. Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer plays her movie daughter Julie. Kevin Kline plays her ex-husband Pete Brummel and Audra McDonald plays Pete’s new wife. Jonathan Demme (“Neil Young: Heart of Gold”) directs and the screenplay is by Diablo Cody (“Juno”). August 14 Where has “Gone Girl” gone? British actress Rosamund Pike stars in the psychological thriller “Return to Sender,” in which she plays Miranda Wells, a woman who goes on a blind date with William Finn (Shiloh Fernandez). It proves to be an unwise choice. Nick Nolte plays her father Mitchell and also in the cast are Camryn Manheim and Rumer Willis, Bruce’s daughter. Remember “The Man From U.N.C.L.E?” The popular 1960s television series is being recreated for the big screen by director Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Homes”) and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (“Planet of the Apes”). Henry Cavill plays CIA agent Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer is rival Russian agent Illya Kuryakin, with Alicia Vikander as British agent Gaby Teller. As usual, the fate of the world is at stake. “Straight Outta Compton” is a dramatization of the rise and fall of revolutionary Los Angeles rap group N.W.A. It stars O’Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube; Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre; Jason Mitchell as Easy E; Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella; Aldis

Hodge as MC Ren; Martin Yates, Jr. as the D.O.C. and Mario Taylor as Suge Knight. F. Gary Gray (“The Italian Job”) directs. August 19 “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess presents the reality-based screwball heist comedy, “Masterminds.” Zach Galifianakis stars as David Ghantt, an uncomplicated armored truck driver who is lured into a scheme by his work crush, Kelly Campbell (Kristin Wiig). She assembles a hare-brained heist team headed by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson), which nevertheless manages to steal $17 million, only to be pursued by comical hit man Mike McKinna (Jason Sudeikis). August 21 It sounds like some kind of deodorant or a brand of smokes, but “American Ultra” is an action-comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg as Mike, a seemingly hapless, unmotivated stoner living with Phoebe (Kristen Stewart) in a small town. Their calm life is upended when Mike discovers in the past he was a highly-trained, lethal sleeper agent. Uma Thurman, Bill Pullman and Tony Hale have supporting roles in a script written by Max Landis (“Victor Frankenstein) and directed by Nima Nourizadeh (“Project X”). Oh the horror of “Sinister 2,” a sequel in which a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon and her twin 9-year-old sons (Robert and Dartonian Sloan) are menaced in a rural house by evil spirit Buhguul. Oh bugger! August 28 How much stock should we put in a movie based on a Mattel action figure? We will find out when “Max Steel” hits theaters. Sixteen-year-old Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his alien companion Steel must harness and combine their powers to become superhero Max Steel. “Regression” is a thriller set in Minnesota in 1990. Ethan Hawke is Det. Bruce Kenner, who investigates the case of young Angela (Emily Watson). She has accused her father John Gray (David Dencik) of an unspeakable crime. A psychologist, Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is called in to sort things out. Alejandro Amenabar (“Agora”) is the writer and director.

The Beat Goes On: The Complete Rebus Stories

by Ian Rankin August 11, 2015 Ian Rankin’s Detective Inspector John Rebus, a man The New Yorker calls “the ideal sleuth.” Brilliant, irascible and frequently frustrating to both his friends and his long-suffering bosses, John Rebus has made the dark places of Edinburgh his home for over two decades. THE BEAT GOES ON collects all of Ian Rankin’s Rebus short stories for the first time, including two never-before published tales written specifically for this collection. From his beginnings as a young Detective Constable in “Dead and Buried,” right up to his dramatic, but not quite final, retirement in “The Very Last Drop,” Rebus shines in these stories, confirming his status as one of crime fiction’s most compelling, brilliant, and unforgettable characters. In these gripping, fast-paced tales, the legendary Scottish detective investigates the sinister cases that are his specialty, including a gruesome student death, the brutal murder of a woman at the crux of a love triangle, an audacious jewel heist, suspicious happenings at a nursing home, and an ominous email that brings a family’s darkest secrets to light.

The Eagles Wow South Florida, Possibly for the Last Time By skip sheffield photos by tom craig

Don Henley

The Eagles love Miami…at least they did on July 10 at American Airlines Arena, where they continued their 2015 “History of the Eagles” tour. The group made mention that Miami loomed large in their history, as they recorded at the famed Criteria Studios in 1975 and Bayshore Studios in 1978. The Eagles’ history dates back to Los Angeles in 1971, when studio musicians Glenn Frey, Don Henley, who were in Linda Ronstadt’s band, and Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner got together as a kind of supergroup of singers and musicians. Founding members Frey, guitar and Henley, drums and guitar played the Miami concert with newer members Timothy B. Schmit on bass and Joe Walsh on guitar. Much to the delight of Florida fans, founding guitarist, banjo and mandolin player Bernie Leadon paid a 44 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

guest appearance. Leadon left the group in 1975, when the band moved more toward rock ‘n’ roll from their original country flavor, but he has always remained a friend. The concert began with the two main guys, Glen Frey and Don Henley sitting down for an acoustic set and playing “Desperado.” The duo got the first of many standing ovations for that wistful ballad. Leadon, who now lives in Gainesville, Florida, then joined in, followed by Timothy B. Schmit, who replaced founding bassist Randy Meisner in 1975. Schmidt is the singer who put the sky-high notes in the group’s harmonies. Frey mentioned Meisner, who sang lead on the group’s first gold record, “Take It To the Limit.” “I hope he’s OK” said Frey of Meisner, who has been facing some personal challenges. Finally out came gui-

tarist Joe Walsh, who was already famous for his own hard rock trio, The James Gang, when he signed on in late 1975. Henley moved from guitar to his drum kit. The only “persona non grata” was Don Felder, whom Walsh replaced. Witty Walsh has always been the life of the party, and he added much-needed comic relief to the group’s live performances. After the acoustic set, the Eagles stood up and strapped on their electric instruments to rock the 20,000-seat arena, adding their five backup touring musicians. If you missed the concert you can still catch the Emmy Award-winning film documentary “History of the Eagles” on DVD, Blu-Ray and streaming on Netflix. travel ║ south africa Part II By Jeff Kirby, THE INDEPENDENT TRAVELER

Cape Town, South Africa

If you enjoyed my recent article on Kruger National Park, and are thinking of planning the trip of a lifetime to South Africa, read on…

After leaving Kruger, we drove to Durban, South Africa’s most popular domestic holiday city… and it’s easy to see why. It has miles of soft, sandy swimming beaches, great surfing and warm weather all year round. There’s everything from Bed & Breakfasts to world-class hotels, and you’ll never run out of fun things to do. Head to the ocean for a fishing charter or chill out on a sunset cruise. Take in the marine life at uShaka Marine World, burn up some energy at Water World, and if you like to gamble, they have a world class casino too. For those who like to shop, they have incredible malls, and great dining opportunities. Plan to spend 3 or 4 nights here, before returning your rental car at Durban airport, as you fly to Port Elizabeth, where you pick up your next rental.

Following the coastline heading south from Port Elizabeth, you will be traveling the world famous “Garden Route” to Cape Town. From Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, the Garden Route with its lush forests and wide meandering rivers is an adventure playground for scuba diving, golfing, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, biking, hiking, flying, hang-gliding, paragliding, ballooning and parachuting ... and bungee jumping! Keep watching seawards for the Southern Right whales, the humpback, bottlenose and common dolphins, and even killer whales that frolic close to shore, especially near Plettenberg Bay. Allow yourselves two or three days for this journey, before arriving in Cape Town, described as

46 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

the most beautiful city in the world, and not without reason. Cape Town is a city with a diverse range of attractions, sights and activities to offer. From lavish and luxurious to back-packing on a budget, Cape Town has something for everyone. From the landmark beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay to the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the exciting city center and the award winning wine farms of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek time spent in Cape Town will not be forgotten. We spent a few days in a small hotel at Clifton Beach, relaxing and sunbathing, and enjoying the many restaurants, cafes and bars

that line the beach road. Clifton Beach is only minutes from Cape Town, yet small, intimate and inviting. Cape Town’s beaches are ideal for any number of water sports, including surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and kite-surfing. Scuba diving is also popular and the reefs, caves and many shipwrecks that line the coastline make for some excellent dives. There is also great game fishing and for the more adventurous, why not try shark cage diving! For the remainder of our stay in Cape Town we rented one of the luxurious furnished apartments in the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) waterfront complex. There is a central reservation office, yet despite the fact we did not have a reservation, we were promptly shown three or four beautiful apartments, all with balconies overlooking the harbor, before finally negotiating an incredible price of $150 a night on a 1500 sq ft three bedroom unit. The V&A is South Africa’s most visited tourist attraction with about 10 million visitors a year. From your apartment you can walk

in safety to all of the waterfront attractions, bars, restaurants and shopping. The whole V&A waterfront complex and its apartments are all security fenced and guarded. We especially enjoyed at the end of a long day, sitting on our balcony with a glass of wine, watching the boats entering and leaving the harbor, and watching the hive of activity around the waterfront. Whilst in Cape Town take a trip around the Cape Peninsula. Follow the coastline south, stop off at the

penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach and then continue to the Cape Peninsula National Park and Cape Point, the most southern point on the continent. Within the reserve you will see wild baboons, buck and Cape Mountain Zebra, plus tons of other wildlife. But stay in your car and keep the windows closed! Don’t miss a breathtaking cable car trip to the top of Table Mountain with rotating glass floor for

360 degree views, from here the views are stunning. For the more adventurous, the journey down offers the opportunity to do the longest commercial abseil in the world! Either way up or down is not for the faint of heart! Finish your day with a visit to the market vendors around Greenmarket Square, where you can buy local art, jewelry, clothes, woodcarvings etc. Take a drive along the Western Cape’s many wine routes and visit global award winning wine farms for wine tasting, cellar tours and an opportunity to purchase some good local, internationally recognized wines. If you have another three days

to spare, take the once in a lifetime opportunity to fly from here to Victoria Falls (which means “the smoke that thunders”). Stay on the Zimbabwe side of the Falls, where you can enjoy white water rafting, bungee jumping, jet boat tours, sundowner cruises, go on safari on an elephant, or take the opportunity to walk with lions that have been raised from orphaned cubs. You should have the most action packed adventure of your life. If you allowed yourselves a week in Cape Town, and took the side trip to the Falls, you will have enjoyed an incredible three week vacation in Africa, that you will remember for the rest of your life.

How To Fix That “Pain In The Neck” By Dr. John Conde

{

Neck pain can be, well, a “pain in the neck”. It is estimated that 10% of Americans (that’s 30,500,496 people!) are currently suffering from neck pain.

The traditional treatment prescribed by physicians utilizing pain relievers, muscle relaxants, rest, and possible soft collar application is no longer the acceptable standard of care as this regimen only produces symptomatic relief. According to a landmark report furnished by the Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders (which can be found in the peer reviewed medical journal Spine), some of the most effective treatments for neck pain include manipulation, mobilization, massage, and exercise. In addition, cutting-edge research is exposing the benefits of brain-based therapeutic exercises for the relief and prevention of neck pain due to the brain’s intimate control of neck muscles. The neck is the most dynamic part of the spine. Its main functions are to protect the spinal cord, provide the foundation for the skull, and act as a bridge connecting the skull with the rest of the body. However, it has to be flexible enough to allow movement in six different planes. This makes the neck the most vulnerable region of the spine to injury. It is lined with a high concentration of compression sensitive sensors (joint mechanoreceptors), which when triggered provide a high powered stimulation to the brain which is essential for its health. The small muscles which surround the neck play a large role in the overall health of the neck. Reflexes generated in these muscles in response to stretch relay through a certain part of the brain termed the cerebellum which 48 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

then fire back to keep these same muscles strong. As a result, brain-based therapies geared towards the cerebellum produce amazing results concerning the overall stability of the neck. The most common neck complaints involve three distinct structures: the disc, the posterior joints of the spine also known as

the facet joints, and the soft tissue regions including the ligaments and tendons surrounding the spine. Injury to the discs which are found between the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers will produce moderate to severe neck pain with associated pain into the arm and hand. The pain may be relieved momentarily with elevation of the affected arm over the head. Facet joint injuries will also manifest as neck and arm pain but may start without an offensive behavior like a trauma and will typically produce pain down the outer arm into the hand. Lastly, soft tissue injury will normally produce localized pain with severe restriction of movement. Nausea and headache may accompany the pain. This is commonly found after motor vehicle accidents. Many new, advanced therapies are combining physical medicine such as mobilization exercises, stretch/ strengthening exercises, myofascial release, traction, decompression, and nutrition with brain-based exercises targeting the cerebellum region of the brain. This approach not only focuses on the neck structures themselves but also the regions of the brain that control the deep intrinsic muscles of the neck producing greater stability. Stop hurting and start living. The Conde Center For Chiropractic Neurology 401 West Atlantic Avenue, Suite #014 Delray Beach, FL 33444 561-330-6096 www.thecondecenter.com

Don’t Get Burned

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

As the summer months roll past us, sunlight becomes more intense and shines for longer hours, so naturally we gravitate to pools and beaches for recreation and to cool down. Unfortunately, fun in the sun comes with a risk of developing skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon put together. Over 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually, 90 percent of which are caused by UV radiation from sunlight and tanning beds. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. And, if an individual can reach the age of 65, the chance of developing skin cancer is 50 percent! Luckily most are found early and can be managed in a dermatologist’s office.

But there is also a risk of developing one of the deadliest diagnoses: “malignant melanoma”. One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 62 minutes to be precise). And while the incidence of many other cancers is falling, the incidence of melanoma continues to rise at a rate faster than that of any of the seven most common cancers. Melano50 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ma only accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, but it causes more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. One or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence can more than double a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. If serious sunburn is a part of your history, extra precautions are absolutely mandatory. The good news is that the survival rate for patients where melanoma is detected early and before the tumor has penetrated through the skin, is about 99 percent. The bad news is that the survival rate falls to only 15 percent for those with advanced disease. One problem with melanoma is that there are no symptoms with early melanoma, no pain, no itch, nothing but maybe just a spec of color change that only a trained eye is equipped to recognize. As a dermatologist with a strong awareness of skin consequences, I urge everyone not to burn in the sun. Be religious about applying sunscreen, wear protective clothing and enjoy the great outdoors responsibly. Don’t become part of the skin cancer epidemic; don’t become a statistic. The single most important preventive measure is to see your dermatologist to have a professional skin check. This is a lifesaver you can’t afford to live without. Statistic provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation of America.

Protect your smile when you’re going for the goal!

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

An estimated 3 million teeth are knocked out annually during youth sporting events.

It’s that time of year again when your kids are heading back to school and are excited about joining their favorite sports teams. But, when you think of what they need for school – pens, paper, calculator and such – is a mouth guard on the list? The mouth and face of a child or young adult can be easily injured, especially when proper precautions are not taken when participating in sports or recreational activities. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 7 million sports- and recreation-related injuries, and more than half of those injuries are sustained by children as young as 5 years old. Last year, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation forecasted that more than 3 million teeth would be knocked out in youth sporting events. They also reported that athletes who don’t wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth! Yet, in a survey commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists, 67 percent of parents admitted that their children do not wear a mouth guard during organized sports. But, if mouth guards offer a simple and relatively inexpensive solution to help dramatically decrease the risk of oral injuries, why aren’t more kids wearing them? This same survey found that 84 percent of children do not wear mouth guards while playing organized sports because they are not required to wear them, even though they may be required to wear other protective materials, such as helmets and shoulder pads. Not only do mouth guards save teeth, they 52 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

help protect jaws. So even if they’re not required, it is an important tool to have. An effective mouth guard holds teeth in place, allows for normal speech and breathing, and provides a high degree of

comfort and fit. It should cover the teeth and, depending on the patient’s bite, also the gums. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association offer the following tips to prevent or minimize injury to athletes: • Wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports. Mouth guards can help prevent injury to a person’s jaw, mouth and teeth, and are significantly less expensive than the cost (and pain) to repair an injury. • Wear a helmet. Helmets absorb the energy of an impact and help prevent damage to the head. • Wear protective eyewear and a face shield to avoid damage to eyes, the delicate bones around eyes, nose and jaw. If you do suffer a dental injury and knock out a tooth, make sure you find the tooth (avoid touching the root) and call your dentist immediately. Try and keep the tooth as clean as possible and store in milk if you can. It’s Never Too Late By Ashley Sica

Think it’s too late to transform your body? Think again. Julie is just one the many women who have come to me in their mid-forties looking to take control of their health.

Whether it’s to lose weight, gain muscle or just FEEL better it’s never too late to take action. Read below about Julie’s fitness journey and how she went from being intimated to walk into the gym, to being able to walk onto the fitness stage for the first time ever at the age of 46. 1. What made you want to transform your body? I have always admired physically fit women. For me, I wanted to be healthy and feel good about myself in my 40s. My mother passed away at a relatively young age from cancer, and I wanted to do everything I could to live a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to be a good example to my kids.

54

2. What was the most difficult part of your transformation? I was totally not a gym person when I began my fitness program! I have been practicing yoga for years and just like people are intimidated to go to a yoga studio, I was afraid of the gym because I didn’t know how to use the machines. I was entering the land of the unknown. Also, I had to retrain my diet. I learned to “eat clean” and cut out a lot of unnecessary carbs and sugars. Of course, it helped to have that cheat meal once a week! 3. What have you learned from your transformation? I know it sounds cliché, but I have learned that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. With discipline, motivation and focus, you can achieve your goals. Every day is a challenge, but the results of your hard work eventually show up. 4. What can you do now that you weren’t able to do before, if anything? I have a new found confidence. I never dreamed that at 46 years old, I would be

entering a fitness competition. However, when I walked on that stage in April, I felt confident and I felt good about myself. And I think that helped me to win trophies in two different categories. 5. What would be your advice to other women out there? Never think it is too late to start your fitness journey. Find a friend or group of friends who can help to motivate you like I did. Be consistent, train as much and regularly as you can because it will pay off. A healthy diet consisting of eating clean is key. Your body won’t show the results with a poor diet. And most importantly, believe in yourself and find your inner-strength. We are all stronger than we think! Mintfit 111 ReFresh ReShape ReEnergize 111 East Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-274-7477 www.mintfit.com

PRICE FLOORING By diane feen Photos by melissa korman

Ray Price takes a lot of pride in his flooring store on Atlantic Avenue - and his reputation.

While some flooring businesses stress low prices and vast selections, Ray has something more comprehensive in mind when he does business. “We are one of the only flooring stores where you can find the owner five days a week on the selling floor. I have the drive to continue to make my business better all the time - even after 28 years here. Not only is my name is on the building, but I have a reputation that is very important to me,” said Ray, who is the largest Shaw carpet dealer in South Florida. His creed to continue to improve and expand the business is in direct response to the plea of many who live in South Florida. “Every day I hear about contractors ripping people off. Cheap can be very expensive. We are fair and we do what we say we are going to do.” Ray is right on the money (so to speak). Just recently he heard about a woman who 56 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

hired a handyman to install a wood floor and the man took the cash and didn’t complete the job. But that’s nothing unusual for some residents who have moved to South Florida from up North. “All we wanted was an honest day’s work for a day’s pay. I have hired so many contractors and they either do inferior work or they don’t finish the job at all,” said Michigan transplant Ellen Stern. It is these types of complaints that have launched Price Flooring into a new side of the business. They now do kitchen and bath remodels for customers with top quality products made in the USA. “We have loyal customers and contractors and they kept asking us to do more home renovation. They like our work ethic and our honesty, they don’t have to worry about getting taken advantage of,” said Price who calls this new division of Price Flooring, Priceless Kitchens and Baths. To insure that his customers are happy Ray is not using pressboard (that has a reputation for VOC’s and other complications) and has decided to use all wood cabinets instead. “We only carry 15 different wood cabinets and have positioned ourselves with the distributor in a way that we can offer our wood cabinets for less money than the big box stores do their pressboard cabinets.” Price Flooring can also design your kitchen or vanity with 3D imaging software so you can see the kitchen layout and make changes before the job is started. But kitchens and baths are only a part of the Price Flooring business model. They still sell and install carpet, laminate, wood flooring, porcelain and ceramic tile, porcelain planks, decorative mosaic tiles, LVP and more. Some of the newest floors on the market (and exclusive to Price Flooring) are Shaw’s “Life Happens” and “Floorte.” Like most things in the Price Flooring Showroom they are made in the USA. Life Happens is a clever carpet product made by Shaw that has the same versatility that people demand in their lives. “Life Happens is a waterproof carpet that is the carpet of the future because it is not only stain resistant but it has a terrific warrantee. If you’re even thinking about new carpet you should definitely check out Life Happens,” said Ray. You bet it does. The “Life Happens” carpet has a warranty of 25 years and has features no other carpet in the industry has to date. According to Ray when most carpet gets wet it goes down to the padding. When the padding gets damp the stain comes back to the surface. “Life Happens” is part of the Shaw life-

guard carpets that are treated with R2X Stain and Soil Resistance protection. It also has a thermoplastic backing that gives the carpet a waterproof barrier that prevents liquids from soaking into the padding and subfloor. The carpet also has a high level of liquid stain resistance because liquid stays on the surface of the carpet and doesn’t soak through the backing. After the mess is cleaned up, the carpet dries quickly. There’s another bright spot in the flooring business, and one that Ray gives his personal stamp of approval. Called Floorte, this Shaw product is known as LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank). It has a 50-year warrantee and is waterproof, stainproof, needs no grout and looks like wood planks. “It’s also softer on your feet, easier to clean and maintain. I like it so much I installed LVP in our showroom,” said Price, who is the exclusive South Florida dealer for Shaw’s Floorte flooring. Floorte also comes in assorted colors and gradients of texture to look like marble or wood, yet it doesn’t have the fancy pedigree or upkeep requirements. “LVP is the fastest growing product in the flooring industry. It’s luxury vinyl with a core backing that is easy to clean and perfect for people with children and pets,” said Ray. It is because of his dedication (and insistence on superior workmanship) that has catapulted Price to the forefront of the flooring business. “We are overbooked on our bathroom remodels right now. People like that we can remodel from start to finish and they don’t have to worry. Our workman are licensed and insured and experienced,” said Ray.

SCRATCH CAR Speedy Affordable Auto Paint And Repairs by Diane Feen

photos by melissa korman

There are some things in life that just take too long - getting Internet service, medical visits and car repairs.

That was the impetus for Siderio Cardoso to start a body shop that would repair and paint cars, fix scratches, molding, fenders and bumpers in a speedy manor. No more waiting a week for your car to be repaired. Cardoso had an idea that was quick in action but common sense in creation. “We couldn’t believe how expensive it was, and still is, to repair scratches, scrapes, moldings, mirror covers, fenders, quarter panels and related parts. You had to leave your car for days and days in the body shop. But thanks to the innovation of the process of painting and the chemicals available today we can put an end to this whole process,” said Scratch Car Manager Fernando Rezende. They sure do. Scratch Car’s claim to fame is their one day repair service. Their technicians are trained in all facets of auto repair, which cuts down on having to wait for different people to start working on your car. “Our technicians are trained to do everything from start to finish on each car. In some of the bigger shops they keep your car for three or four days. They have one person who preps the car, one who pulls out dents Brosley prepping vehicle for paint

58 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

and another to replace the bumper. Our technicians are trained in all aspects of repair and can handle the job from beginning to end,” he added. The results are nothing short of perfect. “I heard about Scratch Car from my brotherin-law. I took my car to them to fix a dent in my car. The service was excellent and the repairs were second to none. They take pride in their workmanship and do an excellent job. I live an hour away, so Fernando dropped off his car at my house and picked up mine so I didn’t have to drive there,” said Todd Kaye, owner of TJ’s Collectibles. Kaye isn’t the only one who marvels at the speed and delicacy of their work. Ginger Peterson, who just moved to Florida from Hawaii, took a leisurely drive from California to South Florida on her way to put down roots

here. But there was a surprise on her car when she let a valet park her car in New Orleans. “I have a really nice car and I took a road trip before moving to South Florida. When we stopped in New Orleans a valet driver banged my car. So I took it to Scratch car to have it fixed and they did a great job. I was so impressed. Not only did the BMW dealer want a lot more money for the same job, but I couldn’t believe how exact Scratch car matched the sky blue color of my car. And they did it in one day. I am very impressed,” said Peterson, who owns PCF International. Another reason that locals really like Scratch Car is that they will come to your home and fix your car right in your driveway. Their Mobile Service Car technicians are trained to do most repairs in an hour without you having to go anywhere. “For our

older customers this is really a luxury. This service is by appointment only and is available Monday to Saturday. The mobile techs carry all the tools and equipment they need on the mobile repair truck and all you have to do is supply the keys,” said Fernando. The reason Scratch Car can utilize this mobility and speed is due to the innovation of the auto painting process and the state-ofthe-art chemicals that put an end to the former way of doing repairs that was time consuming. Now speed is of the essence – but nothing is spared in this more rapid form of auto repair. You get the same excellent service and repairs at an affordable price. “Our prices are so low that customers find it is often better to pay for them rather than report it to their insurance company. If it is a big job we go through the insurance company, but for small repairs it is so affordable that people opt to pay for the repairs themselves.” Scratch Car is not only convenient, affordable and efficient but they offer customers 25 percent discount on each repair. “People like a special deal and we are here to please our customers and make sure they feel a

Fernando, manager, supervising the paint booth

sense of satisfaction,” adds Fernando. Dee Zimmerman would tend to agree. “We had a huge dent on the trunk of our CR-V. Scratch Car gave me the best price by far; no one else was even close. I had the car back the next morning and it exceeded all my expectations. When I got the car home my wife and I both agreed, it was like we just got a brand new car! Fernando and Adrian

are both great guys. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for top notch body work!”

Up Close And Personal

SIPERSTEIN DERMATOLOGY GROUP by Diane Feen

If there’s one thing that Siperstein Dermatology Group is well known for, it’s their personalized and compassionate approach to delivering patient care.

“Our goal is to reach out to the community. You don’t have to be a patient to attend our complementary educational seminars on topics such as skin cancer prevention, detection and treatments, cosmetic procedures, anti-aging techniques, acne and a myriad of other subjects,” said Dr. Robyn Siperstein, who not only built a modern 8,000-squarefoot dermatology office in Boynton Beach, but graduated from Yale University School of Medicine Magna Cum Laude. If you knew Dr. Siperstein you would know the roots of this compassion go far deeper than just being nice. She genuinely cares about her patients and the other doctors that she personally recruits to join her growing Siperstein Dermatology Group in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach. “In this uncertain medical environment our office is not cutting corners to make ends meet with declining reimbursements from insurance companies. Instead, we strive to exceed our own high standards by going above and beyond the norm.” One example of this outreach geared toward creating a better patient-doctor relationship is giving each patient enough time to receive proper care. “To combat the financial impact of declining reimbursements, some offices book eight patients per hour, which gives each patient six or seven minutes per appointment. At Siperstein Dermatology Group we spend an average of 15 minutes with each patient and give them a thorough head-to-toe exam.” There’s also something else new. They are offering one of the first VIP Concierge Services in dermatology with Dr. Siperstein. There is an annual fee dependent on the plan you choose. There are four different plans avail60 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

able, and the VIP service gives patients the doctor’s phone number and email, and you can get an immediate appointment if you need one. You can also see Dr. Siperstein one Saturday a month and on specific evenings. At the moment this service is only available for Dr. Siperstein. “This new Concierge option, which is being offered by a growing number of primary care doctors, is new to the field of dermatology. Our concierge service will offer 30-minute head to toe evaluations with facial computer analysis and ample time for patients to

ask me all of their questions in one appointment. They will also get personal call-backs regarding test results,” said Dr. Siperstein. One reason people are flocking to Siperstein Dermatology Group is that their doctors have extensive training and excellent credentials. There are four Board-Certified Dermatologists, two Physician Assistants and two Licensed Paramedical Aestheticians. “We recently added one new dermatologist this summer and I will be hiring an additional dermatologist this Fall. Our doctors are board-certified dermatologists

with the highest level of education from Ivy League colleges.” The newest doctor to join the practice is Dr. Elizabeth Nestor, who completed her undergraduate studies at Cornell University and graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine with honors. She did a research fellowship and residency in Dermatology and was elected to serve as Chief Resident. Dr. Elissa Norton, who has been with the practice for almost two years, completed her undergraduate degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and did graduate level research at Harvard and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Norton graduated at the top of her class at the University of Miami School of Medicine and received numerous awards throughout her time earning her medical degree and completing her residency. Another difference between Siperstein Dermatology Group and others is that physician assistants have proper on-site support from medical doctors at all times. “Instead of having Medical Directors who are not available in the office (but only by phone), ours are always here. It’s important that our patients get the best medical care.” If you ask Dr. Siperstein about seeing a dermatologist on a regular basis she’ll tell you why. “Patients assume they are fine because they have no rash, but unfortunately Melanoma is a silent killer. It can be genetic - you don’t have to be in the sun to get Melanoma. I recommend a full-body skin exam, which will allow the provider to examine areas that pa-

tients cannot see on their own. If we detect it right away it can be treated. It’s important to come in at least once a year so we can catch something the patient may not see.” Siperstein Dermatology Group treats all types of skin issues from rashes, acne, skin cancer detection and Mohs Surgery to cosmetic services. Newer treatments include the XTRAC® laser for psoriasis, Blue Light treatments for pre-cancers, Hydrafacials, Photofacials, DermaPen, injectable fillers with cannulas, Xeomin and sclerotherapy with Asclera. Most people stop by Peterson’s Flower Market to buy fresh luminescent flowers. And why not? They are the freshest flowers around and the variety and colors are so beautiful it’s easy to be hypnotized by their presence.

But there’s another draw to this hidden flower hot spot. “Barbara is such a beautiful woman and I like her so much,” said one loyal customer who comes a few times a month to stock up on what he calls his secret romance weapon. “Do you know what I can do after I give these flowers?” said the octogenarian with a wry smile. Fred Steigman, who goes to Peterson’s once a month for fresh flowers, also sees the bright

light in Barbara Peterson’s eyes. “Barbara is so good to me and the prices are right here. I am buying roses for my lovely wife, the flowers here are so fresh they last a long time,” said the charming local. Though Steigman bought two-tone roses in yellow and orange their technical name is High Magic Roses. Barbara knows that and a lot more about her families flower business. They should

Barbara with arm load of beautiful fresh roses in the flower shop

– Peterson’s has been in the flower business for over 60 years and is one of the oldest flower businesses in South Florida. Founded in 1954 by Sven Arthur Peterson, the legacy was carried on by his son Paul who expanded it more by buying 40 acres of land to grow flowers and build greenhouses. The company still holds the moniker of the freshest flowers in town, but the players have changed since 1954. Barbara is the matriarch of the family and holds court almost every day at the shop on Atlantic Avenue just west of Military Trail. Her four sons Paul, Eric, James and Michael run the company and are rooted in the flower business as much as the drain pipes that carry the water away after a flood. The beneficiary of this fresh colorful bounty of Mother Nature is the customer – many of whom are local. Sheila Felsen is one of the most loyal. “I come here once a week because the flowers are so fresh and come in all colors. My favorite is Alstroemeria,” said Felsen, who bought three bundles of red Alstroemeria on her visit to Peterson’s. As for why she comes so often to buy flowers at Peterson’s, it’s a no brainer. “Flowers bring life to your house. I put these flowers all over

the house. I even put them under my glass coffee table so there is an illusion that the flowers are growing under the table. I put them in the guest bathroom in little vases as well,” said Felsen. Though some people come for loose flowers wrapped up in delicate paper with butterfly print, others come for readymade bouquets for special occasions. A wicker basket in the cooler is one example of a flower arrangement that just speaks to one’s soul. “This is a special arrangement of white Fuji Mums with fresh yellow Astor and Solidago ferns. It’s perfect for a luncheon or a party – we have many people come here for flower arrangements for events of all kinds,” said Barbara, who is often found reading novels in her down time. The Fuji Mums are festive and bright with promise but there are other startlingly beautiful flowers as well. Some look like animals with beaks and others are naturally bright in color with a neon hue. The bright red Heliconia with tropical leaves couldn’t be fresher unless they were grown under the table. One of the most interesting flowers this time of the year are Shampoo Gingers. In a golden yellow they are tightly woven in a swirl pattern and look like fruit or a fashion accessory. In reality they are a perennial called Zingiber zerumbet. The flower heads are overlapping scales with enclosed flowers that poke out a few at a time. As the flower heads mature they fill with an aromatic liquid that turns bright red. Though the flowers change with the weather there is one thing that remains static. And that’s the passion that Barbara and her sons have for their family flower business. “I’ve been working here for 40 years with my family. It gives me immense joy to see my sons working here and carrying on the family legacy,” said the tall slender matriarch.

Peterson’s Flower Market also specializes in beautiful floral arrangements or custom made bouquets for special events such as weddings, charity events, birthdays, graduation parties or holidays. If you want something specific in color or décor all you have to do is ask. “We were voted the best place to buy flowers in all of Palm Beach County,” said Michael, who swiftly makes up colorful boutiques like Picasso might a portrait. They also make flower arrangements or wreaths for less than happy occasions such as funerals or condolence calls. If you stop by Peterson’s Flower Market you will be charmed by their colorful selection of fresh flowers and the sweet aroma inside. “It is our pleasure to assist you with any local or nationwide wire service deliveries. We offer daily floral deliveries to local funeral homes and hospitals. I am proud to be the 4th generation of Peterson’s to carry on this flower legacy,” said Michael. LANZETTA’S

A Classic Barber Shop With Pizazz By DIANE FEEN Photos By Melissa korman

{

There are no strangers at Lanzetta’s Barber Shop. Everyone who enters this house of good grooming becomes a friend within minutes. If you ask barber Danny Cardona he will tell you their secret.

“We have a family atmosphere here. We treat everyone with genuineness and without pretense. And we connect with people on a deep personal level,” said the first hire that Lanzetta owner Antonio Lanzetta did when he opened the shop three years ago. 68 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

There is a lot to be said about Lanzetta’s – and it’s all good. The chairs are always filled, the number of barbers keeps increasing and the vibes keep on rolling in a positive direction. That and the excellent haircuts are what keep customers happy and the shop

buzzing with activity any day of the week. Even in the dog days of summer when the streets are paved with good intentions, but are quiet nonetheless, Lanzetta’s is booming. Dominic Posocco pretty much sums up their popularity and customer loy-

alty. “I get my hair cut here once every three weeks. I don’t even specify which barber I want when I ask for an appointment. It doesn’t matter who cuts my hair because everyone here does a great job. What also makes it so special is the camaraderie and conversation,” said the marketing maven. Though the haircuts are shorter these days the conversation at Lanzetta’s continues its longevity. Just ask executive Fred Levine. “Everyone here is like family and Danny (who cuts my hair) is like a brother. I have been coming here since they opened (three years ago) and the service is wonderful – far and above the norm. It’s really comfortable too. They know more about me than my family,” said the father of two whose dad is also a barber. The interior of Lanzetta’s is heavy on comfort and decidedly male in nature and nurture. It’s an upscale men’s barbershop with rustic wood beam ceiling, comfortable leather barber chairs and black and white photos of iconic male role models. There’s great music coming from speakers overhead yet the sound of silence also permeates the air when necessary. There’s also a wood plank American flag on the wall, a refrigerator stocked with water, soda and beer and seven barbers who cater to their client’s grooming needs and desires. Lanzetta’s menu consists of haircuts (with straight razor shave on sideburns and neck), a classic haircut with shampoo, blow-dry and

style, old-fashioned scissor over comb and clipper haircuts. They also offer straight edge hot lather shaves, mustache, goatee and beard detailing and complimentary ear, nose and eyebrow trims with every service. When Lanzetta opened this barber shop three years ago it was on a hunch and a passion. And his instincts have led him to success in the quiet yet quaint streets of Pineapple Grove. “I had a hunch this formula would work well in Delray Beach. As a man who just wanted a good haircut, I didn’t like going to fancy women’s salons. And as a professional I wanted to go somewhere better than a discount chop-shop. So I created Lanzetta’s, a Classic Barbershop where men can get a great haircut (or a hot lather shave) and leave feeling confident, fresh and renewed.” That is exactly why Posocco goes every three weeks for his modern haircut. “Coming to Lanzetta’s is the best way to end a day and before the weekend begins. It’s such a great atmosphere and everyone here is great.” Attorney Chris Pasquale also cherishes his haircuts and time spent in this bastion of male camaraderie and grooming. “I come here every five weeks for a gentleman’s taper cut and I always have Tony cut my hair. I’ve been to a few other barbershops over the years but this is the best one in town. The prices are reasonable and they do a great job. It’s clean and they always play cool music and have beer in the fridge. It’s a cool place to be.”

When you meet Lanzetta you know for sure that cleanliness is Godliness. After cutting Pasquale’s hair he picks up a large broom and begins wiping away all traces of Pasquale’s locks that have fallen from grace by his precision scissors. “I do everything I can to keep my shop clean and engaging for our customers. You have to work hard to maintain a good business and I enjoy what I do,” said Lanzetta. Although some things have stayed the same (despite the growth in business and number of barbers) there is one thing that has definitely changed. “We encourage people to book their appointments online. During the season it gets harder to just walk in and get a haircut, we’re pretty busy. It’s easy to book online and we appreciate it when people do that,” said Lanzetta, who is often seen greeting customers on the street with a hug or a hello. The vibes at Lanzetta’s (and the great haircuts) are what attracts loyal clients. But the energy is not happenstance; it was planned from the start. “A good haircut or shave is as much about the experience as the end result. My dream was to create a retro-style barbershop (and haven for men) that pays homage to the classic barbershops of the past.” Sometimes dreams come true – and for Lanzetta that’s definitely the case. Prepare Your Children for a Successful School Year

Delray Beach students return to school August 17 by NICOL JENKINS

{

Sleeping in, family vacations and eating unhealthy are over… It’s back to the books and homework for Delray Beach students.

S

et your alarm clocks…The first day of school for Palm Beach County and Delray Beach is Monday, August 17. While some students are looking forward to seeing their friends, other children might be nervous about starting back in a new classroom. Parents can help ease the back to school jitters and the transition from summer to another school year by using these helpful tips. Get familiar with the school. If your child is attending a new school, visit the campus a few weeks before school begins. Walk around the hallways, classrooms, cafeteria and school office so your child will know how to navigate their way around their new school. 70 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Write down those important school events and early dismissal dates. Mark your calendars now with important school dates, such as Labor Day on September 7th, and half days. With a detailed calendar of events, you will be prepared for picking up your child early from school and won’t have any unexpected surprises. For a detailed calendar for the 2015-2016 school year, visit http://www.palmbeachschools.org/ community/Calendar/PDFs/2015-16/ Recomm2015-2016.pdf.

Tuck your child into bed earlier. Start back with the earlier bedtime hours a few weeks before school starts so they can get adjusted to the new schedule. Also, start the healthy breakfast routine now so they won’t be craving junk food. Establishing schedules for homework, dinner time, TV and sports times also helps. Arranging play times for your child and their classmates to meet before the start of school will help them get excited to go back with their friends.

Safety is the first priority. Make sure to have a talk with your kids about important back to school safety. Children should know who they should contact in case of an emergency and the best contact telephone number. Students should also be aware of traffic safety if walking or taking a bus to school. Find out the bus times and routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpooling plans ahead of time. Bullying is also an important conversation to have with your children. They should know how to report bullying instances, and be aware that it is okay to talk about what happened if they were bullied or witnessed bullying.

Check your child’s school supplies list. Get shopping early to get the discounts now. The earlier you shop, the better the deals. But make sure you check the list first before buying supplies because some teachers require specific supplies. Also, be aware of the school’s dress code and what your child can and cannot wear during the school year.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. School meals are also an important preparation for the school year. If you are packing your child’s lunch, be sure to include healthy meal items and mix it up during the week so they don’t get bored eating the same food over and over. If your children are eating at the school cafeteria, be sure to put aside enough lunch money and encourage choosing healthier meal choices. You can find the Palm Beach County Public Schools lunch menu on their website at http://www.palmbeachschools.org/sfs/index.asp. When your child gets home from school, make them some healthy snacks and be sure to prepare some hearty meals for dinnertime!

Get to know your child’s friends. It’s important to know who they will be hanging out with and how to reach their friends’ parents in case of an emergency. Also, give their friend’s parents your contact information as well.

Plan for after school. After care or after school activities are also an important part of the preparation process. Make sure to know the dates and times for after school sporting practices, games or after school club meetings so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. If you need to utilize after care programs, some schools offer this service at the schools, while others do not have the programs or space. Please visit this link, http://www.palmbeachschools.org/afterschoolprogramming/ documents/AfterschoolProgrammingSiteContactList.pdf for more information on after school care programs in your community! Most important, check your child’s school website as a resource. It is filled with important dates, phone numbers and event information. Last but not least, encourage your child to do their best and pump them up for a new and successful school year!

Sports: The Next Frontier for Delray By linda brown

{

Can Delray Beach become a sports destination? If you ask Marjorie Walden and other members of her Sports Destination Committee, the city is already a sports destination and can be an even larger one with some tweaks, branding and effort.

The all-volunteer task force recently told Delray city commissioners that sports is big business in Delray generating millions in economic impact, driving tourism (heads in beds) and building Delray’s reputation across the country as a desirable place to live, work and play. “The beauty of sports is that it enhances our economy in summer, spring and fall,” said Walden noting that those are the months when the city needs a boost. “And it impacts all parts of our city not just the downtown.” The committee which has been studying sports’ impact on Delray for a little over two years says tennis, soccer and golf provide the biggest boost to the city’s economy at over $12 million a year, according to the Palm Beach County Sports Commission which has been working with the committee. The city tennis stadium—often dubbed a white elephant by politicians—is actually a major driver of revenue for the local economy. While the highest profile event is the city’s ATP Championship held in February, the stadium also hosts several national junior tournaments that were quietly added over a decade ago in a deal between the city commission and tennis promoters. Those events—held in the spring and summer—drive tourism as measured by room nights and provide a boost to local stores and restaurants during the offseason. Hundreds of people are involved in the event, including players, coaches, parents and college recruiters. The committee says the city needs to take the lead in securing improvements to the stadium possibly offered by the state. “We believe Gov. Scott is open to sports tourism,” Walden says. 74 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Delray Beach Tennis CENTER

In addition to tennis, soccer is also an economic driver, with the city hosting college soccer via the NAIA which generated over 1,600 room nights for local hotels. Golf is also a major contributor via the LPGA and two city owned golf facilities that host leagues, tournaments and open play. Other sports are also climbing the ladder of importance including baseball (Elev8 Sports Institute), lacrosse (several leagues and clinics), football (Delray hosts college players and NFL players training for the season and NFL draft combine) and basketball. This summer, retired NBA All Stars Otis Birdsong and Michael Ray Richardson were in Delray hosting a summer camp at Pompey Park for area youth. The committee has a number of goals it wants to accomplish including:

• Raising awareness of the importance of sports to the local economy. • Expand collegiate competitions in Delray in soccer, baseball, tennis and softball. • Ask the city to explore expanding Miller Park to include parts of the Leon Weekes Preserve which sits adjacent to the park. The committee says an additional baseball field can be added which would enable tournaments to be held in Delray. The Preserve—while valuable— has not been well maintained by the county and is not used frequently by the public. City Manager Don Cooper says the city is looking at grant opportunities to boost facilities. Commissioner Al Jacquet is pleased with the committee’s progress. “What they’re doing is very important,” he says, “because they are working on sports that bring people to town and promote Delray.”

Delray by the numbers By linda brown

{

It’s the summer doldrums and we thought we’d heat things up with some numbers. Here’s a look at some statistics and other factual standouts about our beloved Delray that are sure to enliven your summer conversations. Enjoy!

$19.5 million: The amount Palm Beach based Menin Development paid for the George buildings in downtown Delray Beach. The buildings include landmark Atlantic Avenue businesses Huber Drugs and The Green Owl. What does it mean? Well, it means that Atlantic Avenue is on fire and a whole lot of value has been created over the years. But that value is also driving higher rents, with some restaurants and retailers paying over $100 a square foot for space on the Ave. $1 million: The price per acre on US 1 near Atlantic Avenue..some say as a result of the boom others say as a result of the value investors 78 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

are placing on the recent narrowing and beautification of the corridor.

16 percent: Kiwana S. Alexander-Prophete, Principal of Carver Middle School, is proud of her students and staff, and recent test results from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) give her good reason. According to FLDOE’s FY2014 - FY2015 School Change in FCAT Science Proficient, Carver test results showed a 4% increase in students passing Science. Carver Middle School also made a statistically significant gain in Civics. FLDOE’s FY2014 - FY2015 School Change in EOC Civics Proficient ranked Carver 7th out of thirty-four middle schools with a 16%

increase in students passing Civics. EOC and FCAT assessments are a means to gauge scholastic achievement. The administration and faculty at Carver Middle School realize the importance of student performance on these tests and dedicate themselves to promote academic success through quality education. “I am thoroughly pleased with the learning gains that our students have made from the previous school year,” said Principal AlexanderProphete. “I commend both my dynamic team of teachers and administrative staff members who worked diligently to prepare our students for these rigorous assessments.”

33 Percent: In the first quarter of 2015, the growth of luxury home prices has been very dismal. Luxury homes are defined as those occupying the most expensive five percent of houses on the market. According to Redfin Research Group, sales of homes in the million dollar plus range surged in the initial three months of the year, remaining steady in the face of an economic slump. However, luxury homes did not see the same gains. Such luxury villas have not seen a growth rate this low in over three years, rising only a modest .9 percent. Compared to last year’s growth rate, .9 percent is not exactly holding up well. In quarter one of 2014, luxury home average sales prices increased by a whopping 16 percent. Not all cities however fared poorly in terms of the luxury market. Delray Beach led the pack with a 33 percent gain, followed by Austin, Texas, at 31.5 percent, and Boca Raton at 29.5 percent. According to Redfin Agent Robyn Jackson, Florida is currently experiencing an influx of new employers which is reinvigorating downtown living, and helping out the luxury market. “New offices, apartment buildings and lofts, paired with a big onslaught of urban amenities and proximity to the beach, has turned Delray from a place you didn’t want to be to the place to be for highend housing,” said Jackson. Of course, we’ve know that for a long time.

$2,458,000 and $208,000: Average price of homes sold in the first quarter of 2015 in the highest five percent range and the other 95 percent in Delray. The 1,182% difference is the second largest measured in South Florida, next to North Miami which is over 1,200 percent. $151.7 billion: Palm Beach County taxable property values grew 8.69 percent to $151.7 billion this year. The appraiser counted $2.11 billion in new construction. The taxable value of existing property increased 8.37 percent. Here’s a look at Delray’s numbers: $7,245,154,232--2014 property value.

$7,887,651,840—Estimated taxable value before new construction. 11.06%--Percent change.

$88,156,040—New construction.

$7,975,807,880—Estimated value in 2015. 10.08%--Percent change since 2014.

Singing One Tune At A Time

MATTHEW FARMER By Diane Feen

{

If you’re going to talk to Matthew Farmer about his musical career you better have a caffeinated drink at hand. Though dizzying to contemplate his accomplishments are above and beyond what most mortals are capable of.

It goes like this – he wrote, produced and performed musicals in his garage for neighbors, turned his childhood bedroom into a theater, and at the age of five Farmer performed at Jan McArt’s Royal Palm Dinner Theater in Boca Raton. He also sang in the St. Luke Church choir in Lake Worth at the ripe old age of five. But that was just a warm up for a lifetime of performing in musicals, singing in boy bands, creating a one-man show, acting, producing and spearheading artistic endeavors of all types. There is one title that Farmer has not held – and that is Artistic Director for the Delray Beach Center of the Arts. In September he will be crowned with this distinguished honor. The title sounds fairly simple, but the parameters of his responsibilities are vast. “I am looking forward to spearheading the artistic programming for the DBCFA. I am a true advocate for the community and hope to expand the audience to include a younger demographic, yet maintain the caliber of performers that Joe Gillie has established. I have a lot of connections and friends from my years working on cruise ships and living in New York.” Farmer’s resume reads like someone who has had a full career and is facing retirement yet this local fellow, who oozes youthful exuberance, is a mere 37-years-old. He has lived a lot in those 37 years and has accomplished more than most people do in two lifetimes. Farmer attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ and was a soloist in the Princeton University Chapel Choir. He transferred to New York University (passing up a full scholarship to University of Miami) and sang with the NYU Ensemble Singers at Alice Tully Hall. In Miami he landed a job as a pop acoustic singer with a group called Fifth Ring. They not only traveled the world but also performed at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Farmer was also the Artistic Coordinator for the

August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Milagro Center in 1999, establishing their theater programming. But his real passion was played out over a seven year period when he took his act on the high seas. “I performed with Celebrity Cruise Lines and traveled the world. I also worked on Seabourn Cruises as an entertainer; performing Broadway reviews, pop shows, plays and singing with big bands. In 2010 Farmer stepped off the boat (so to speak) and started a new career trajectory. He took over as Program Director for the Arts Garage in its infancy. But when offered the role to sing in Cirque Dreams Productions of Cirque Dreams Holidaze he jumped at the chance. Farmer also sang with the Voices of Liberty at EPCOT’s American Pavilion for Walt Disney World Productions and in the ensemble of Finding Nemo - the musical at Animal Kingdom. If you feel the need for Dramamine to continue reading about Farmer’s life and accomplishments, you’re not alone. After leaving the cruise ship’s eclectic musical journey he created a one-man show called “From Stage to Screen” that premiered at the Arts Garage. Though Farmer was living in South Beach, the beckoning of Delray Beach was nipping at his heels. “I was born and raised in West Palm Beach and my mother Shirley has worked for the same dentist in Delray for 30 years (Dr. Tom Dolvin). My father Michael opened Michael’s Pub in Lake Worth in 1975, and established Lindburgers in Delray in 1984, so I have always been rooted in Delray Beach.” His grandfather came to the US at the age of fourteen from Slovakia to seek a better future. Though he spoke no English at the time, Mike Pivarnik used his hands to create that future. He built St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Lake Worth and also owned a motel that housed priests and nuns. And, he is still here to witness the fruits of his labor at a spry 95. If all of life is a stage then Farmer’s destiny was always to step into the limelight. Arlene Sparks, Farmer’s 9th grade teacher at the Dreyfoos School

of the Arts knew he was destined for greatness. “As a student I found Matthew to be a very talented and passionate performer beyond his years. With all of his worldly artistic experience he brings a fresh, energetic, extremely positive and creative spark to the art scene in Delray. I am so happy he returned to Palm Beach County,” said Sparks, Director of Vocal Studies at Dreyfoos School of the Arts. Farmer’s new job also includes programming the vintage gymnasium, which will be called The Jamnasium. This new music venture will include an eclectic mix of new music, world music, electronic and Symphonia works. There will be audience participation

and engagement, creating an affordable cultural experience. Farmer is also the program director for concerts and events at the outdoor Pavilion, the new summer Arts camp (called Camp Del Arte) and the Cornell Museum programming plans (such as fashion shows, cocktail parties and special events). Despite the enormity of this cultural responsibility, everyone around him is positive that Farmer is the right person for the job. “I’m extremely excited to see Mathew back in Delray and at the Center for the Arts. It says a lot about our community that someone with his talents wants to come ‘home’ and continue to make a difference,”

said Joe Gillie, outgoing President of DBCA. Former mayor Jeff Perlman agrees. “Matthew is an amazing talent and a big believer in our cultural potential. The future of the Delray Center for the Arts is bright as long as we have people like Matthew involved.” Farmer is excited about his new position and has a rather Zen way of embracing it. “I like to express happiness and deliver positive energy to any challenge or obstacle. Being able to share that with the community is a gift. You can’t keep a flame burning bright without throwing coal on the fire.” We look forward to seeing this cultural bonfire real soon. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | August 2015

Fresh Food From Farm To Table

IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE By Diane Feen

{

photos by melissa korman

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they just know it’s time to make some changes. Michel Menna got that inner culinary wakeup call just six months ago. That is when he opened a cozy intimate Italian restaurant in Pineapple Grove named Il Contadino.

Menna has been cooking up a storm since he was tall enough to reach the kitchen counter. He owned Ponte Vecchio in Ft. Lauderdale, restaurants in Boca Raton and has studied the culinary arts in Europe. “I go to the farms every day to get fresh food myself. I was in the produce business in Florida and know what to look for. I prepare specials on a daily basis and only buy what looks good and is fresh,” said the friendly restaurateur. Michel is true to his word. Their homemade breads, appetizers and entrees are tasty, unique and have the hallmark of freshness that’s hard to find in today’s restaurant climate. Take the Osso Buco for instance. This freshly made veal dish is so tasty that it’s not surprising that the veal shank is simmered all day long in a tomato vegetable sauce. Served with champagne risotto the veal is so tender it just falls off the fork on demand. 90

Roasted Rack of Veal

Mussels Marinara

Our favorite dish of the day (they vary each day) was the catch of the day. You may have heard that phrase before, but disregard its legend. This Catch of the Day is the real thing – it was flavorful, moist, and tasty and had a sauce that was made for memories. The Sole (that is called Sogliola) was prepared with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, white wine and Red Shrimp. Served with fresh broccoli and roasted potatoes (that were divine) we couldn’t stop raving about its fresh and fantastic taste. The best part of this newcomer to Pineapple Grove is that each dish is made to order. That means you can ask for your favorite ingredients, or eliminate ones that you don’t like. Michel aims to please and it’s obvious he takes great pleasure in making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Just ask former New Yorker Brenda, who lives around the block from Il Contadino. “I come here all the time because everything is so good. The service is excellent and I enjoy everything on the menu.” Andy feels the same way. “I love restaurants where the owner has a strong presence. Michel went over his menu, made great suggestions and brought us a nice wine we never heard of before. After we enjoyed the wine and appetizers he brought out the most wonderful fish and pasta dishes. We enjoyed the outdoor setting in Pineapple Grove.” Andy has a point. The quaint quietude and calm that permeates Pineapple Grove is contagious and desirable after a day of chasing rainbows or perfection. That’s why guests often sit down outside for a drink while listening to Dale (a server at Il Contadino) play jazz on his guitar. You can sit and enjoy the natural light and people watch outside, or come inside for an authentic Italian experience. Where else can you get baby roasted rack of veal with demi-glace sauce served with broccoli and roasted potatoes? If you’re a fan of fresh fish then try their Branzino baked with roasted garlic in a wine sauce. Just recently Michel came out holding a fresh 20

Eggplant Stack

pound snapper that was just caught. “I’m having a party of eight coming tonight for dinner. I am going to roast the snapper in the oven with extra virgin Olive Oil, garlic, Cremini mushrooms and Kalamata olives. This guarantees the flavorful moist texture of the fish.” Because Michel knows that fine dining often requires great wine he has 1000 bottles stocked for guests. “I have vintage and rare wines. To me all of my customers are celebrities and I like to treat them that way. Everything is prepared fresh and it is often a surprise for our guests to see what’s on the menu each day. I named the restaurant Il Contadino, which means ‘The Farmer’ in Italian.” Aside from daily specials they also have salads, pasta made with fresh sauces and fresh homemade gnocchi. If you have a preference for a special sauce just ask – Michel will make you a nice Puttanesca, Alfredo, Marinara, Bolognaise, tomato sauce or whatever your craving dictates. They also have chicken prepared with different sauces - Marsala, Franchese, Piccatta or Parmigiana. Veal dishes also come prepared in Italian tradition - Saltimbocca, Sorrentina, Contadino style,

Gorgonzola Salad with Grilled Shrimp

Parmigiana and more. For lunch or dinner they have a special salad that looks divine. Made with shrimp, organic baby greens, gorgonzola cheese and homemade pita bread, it’s perfect for any meal. Il Contadino also makes fresh focaccia bread that is served hot to the touch and will melt your carb cravings into bliss. They also have a full lunch menu that includes special salads, pasta dishes, seafood salads, chicken salad with organic greens, wraps, vegetables and homemade delicious entrees. Il Contadino has such a warm welcoming atmosphere it is perfect for private parties and special events. There’s also Happy Hour on the patio from 4 to 6:30 with drink and food specials. Because Michel enjoys making his guests smile there are fresh flowers gracing every plate that makes the exuberance of dining even more colorful. “Best Dates To Buy Product”… What is the truth behind them?

A

s I watch consumers scouring the shelves of their food stores, whether for their pets or themselves, I see them searching the package for the “expiration” date. Most of these consumers ignore the ingredients but are concerned that the product might “expire” before they use it. The truth be known, most do not have a clue what is behind that date do feel it’s important. Here’s the first question; is this practice required? According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), “except for infant formula, product dating is not generally required by Federal regulations”. So why is it there? Manufacturers and processors use it for various reasons. One is to enable tracking of product regarding how long it takes to sell and in case of problems or recalls. It is also used as a marketing tool. In this manner, you the consumer are more likely to dispose of “out of date” products and replace by buying more. It often comes down to the wording on the label. If it has a “best used by” date, this is based on the point in which the nutritive value starts to diminish. It is still good for a period of time following that date or may need to be processed, either by cooking, dehydrating or freezing. Then there is the “best buy” date.

This is often derived by the packer as this is how long we have test shelf life stability or this is when we want to sell this by. Unfortunately many marketers are using the latter as their motivation. A good case in point is dehydrated foods. When they are packaged for the outdoor, survival, or storage markets, they tout a 25year shelf life. However, these same products packaged as a quick meal convenience food or even for pet foods are often labeled with only a 1-year dated shelf life. These products are often used as back-up for winter storms or hurricane supply. This short dating is to encourage you to replace it annually or sooner, thus increasing your purchases. As a packer of herbs and botanical products, our products are dated to our known, tested shelf life. If we have a test package that we have stored for five years and it has not degraded, then five year best “BUY” dates are accurate. When it comes to herbs, spices, and botanicals, if kept dry and away from intense light, they last forever which is actually evidenced in findings in pyramids in Egypt and South and Central America. Some of the products they found are thousands of years old and will still work. While we are all looking for the freshest, safest products possible, once it is processed,

whether jarred, canned, vacuumed, dehydrated, frozen, dried, or many other methods, it basically stays good as long as the package is not compromised. Canned goods, as long as the can is not leaking are good for years. Freezing fish and meat in air tight containers are good for years or more. Dehydrated… well, you get the picture. This is only the case with all natural unprocessed products. Synthetic drugs, vitamins, supplement, preservative and other chemicals can change with time. With these products, you can safely go six months or so past “best buy” however their effectiveness may diminish. That does not mean they are useless but they will have less potency. Understanding that on most commercial products, the dates have much less significance than the actual ingredients. When you realize that most processed products contain many preservatives, does anyone ever test the actual shelf life? Just use common sense. CATCHING THE BRAIN WAVES AS THEY RISE

{

BY diane feen

Are you forgetting a lot these days? Have you walked into a room and couldn’t remember why you were there? Well join the club.

This is not a popular club – or one that most of us wish we could join. But for better or worse getting older is a rite of passage – a gift of maturity and wisdom (not something that will get you a reality TV show). But now that the Altrecht Mental Centre has completed their study of 1,700 volunteers (from the ages of 58 to 98) we know how to sharpen our memories like we used to our number 2 pencils. The only perquisite to this ageless state of mind is sex. It does sound quite jarring considering that few primary care doctors have written prescriptions for sex (and not aug-

mentin) for whatever ails us. But now we have proof – literal scientific proof – that having sex can sharpen the mind and increase the pathways to a better memory. If you’ve been loading up on CoQ10, doing endless crossword puzzles and eating fresh Atlantic salmon – there is an easier solution. But the logistics of this sexual fantasy has not been solved by this groundbreaking Dutch study. My first question is how do people later in life find a suitable partner to engage in carnal activity? Although that is a daunting task (take it from me) this new study takes off some of the pressure to find Mr. or Mrs. Right, thanks to Psychiatrist Norman Doidge. According to him, the brain rejuvenates to its maximum only when in a new love affair. “When monogamous mates develop a tolerance for each other the romantic high dies down and the brain no longer rewires,” said Doidge, author of The Brain that Changes. In this instance an electrician is of no use. But neither is monogamy. Ralph and Ricky Lauren or Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson may look like they’re having a great life, but I’ll bet you they can’t remember their facebook passwords. But, Scott Disick is the real hero. The pretty party boy may be two-timing his long suffering girlfriend, but behind those Hollywood Hills walls he is probably nurturing the mind of an Albert Einstein or Bill Gates. According to Doidge the brain changes when we fall in love. I agree. My brain starts joyfully celebrating every time a man takes me to a 5-star restaurant and I don’t have to mortgage my condo to pay for it. It’s also not a bad thing to have someone help you hang the shower cur-

tain when it crashes to the floor in the middle of the night (been there). It’s not just a loving feeling that sharpens our minds, but a transformation actually occurs that causes new pathways to form and new connections in the brain. It turns out that love (and sex) can work to rewire our brains in such a way that we’re able to take greater pleasure in everything we do (laundry?). According to the experts we gain confidence in ourselves and a sensation activates that makes us think we can accomplish great things (like celebrating a birthday with someone who knows where our G-Spot is). The good news is that scientists used to think that these brain changes happened only with young people. Older people, they thought, had brain circuits that would harden and not renew themselves. But now it is becoming clear that the human brain is endlessly adaptable and can keep repairing itself throughout life given the right sort of stimulus (GSpot not shopping). It’s worked for author Liz Hodgkinson. The 60 something writer was searching for love (and sex) and found nirvana. “At an age when I expected everything, including my brain to atrophy, the exact opposite happened. I have, to my amazement, enjoyed a series of exciting love affairs that have given me a new lease on life. I have taken on new projects, moved and travelled to distant lands - all as a result of my brain rejuvenating itself through the sublime power of physical intimacy.” I am thrilled for Hodgkinson. But I am wondering if it is worth it to take the risk of disease and heartbreak just to be able to remember where I put my car keys.

ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card

Throughout the nation the word interesting has rarely been used in conjunction with local chambers of commerce, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

By Stephen Chrisanthus

Photo by Norman Karl Garrett Photography

This series begins in the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce itself. This highly talented staff is responsible for touching the community through a multitude of programs, groups and events. They are dedicated to making this hub of commerce one of the best in the country. But looking beyond their roles within the business community, they have very interesting stories and lives of their own. Meet four Delray Beach’s diverse citizens.

In 1975 I moved to Tehran, Iran with my family (My dad worked for Grumman Aerospace and was sent there to help build F14 fighter jets for the Shah). While over there, I taught English to the Iranian Air Force and modeled for a shampoo line. The shampoo commercials were shown on TV and at the movie theaters; there were posters of me at the markets and billboards on the highway.

I am 100% Norwegian and was born and raised in a rich Norwegian community in Brooklyn, NY. My dad immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island at the age of nine. Due to the mumps, the boat doctor told his mom to tie a scarf around his face and sneak him in so they wouldn’t quarantine the whole boat. I am proud of my Viking heritage and the courage it took my grandparents to follow the dream of life in America.

I am an avid wine connoisseur, collector and traveler. My parents introduced me when I was a kid, continued with wine clubs when I turned 21. I started visiting wine regions around Greece, Napa Valley, Paso Robles, California, Mendoza, Tuscany, etc. - not to mention Ohio vineyards! My passion is hiking. I climbed my first “14-er” – Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs (14,000 foot mountain) in 2013 and Machu Picchu in Peru December 2014.

You may know me from my years of involvement in Delray Beach and the Chamber of Commerce, but many still don’t know that I’m an active member of a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team. At any time of the day or night, I could be called to report for service following a disaster in the USA or around the world. In fact, I was part of the US Government response to search for survivors for nearly two weeks in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, and prior to that, 2 weeks in Gulfport, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.

He Said/She Said:

Three Biggest Lies on Dating Sites By Robert V and Marie T

{

Ahhh...the adventures of On Line Dating! If you’re single, then either you’ve done it, tried it, thought about it, or maybe even trolled a few sites (anonymously) to see what your options are (and check out the competition).

We are all a little guilty of padding or exaggerating our profiles (right?). But some people outright LIE! And then are surprised when their first meeting doesn’t go as hoped, HA! So this month we explore the Three Biggest Lies on Dating Sites. We, both He and She, have had our share of experiences on a site or two (or four, but who’s counting). Definitely GNO (Girls/Guys Night Out) conversation material! If you can’t find a suitor, at least you have a few tales for a good laugh! 1. Nobody seems to know the definition of “Athletic and Toned”. He: Okay, I work out six days a week and do cardio three days a week. I consider myself both athletic and toned. In my past life of internet dating, this term is used to describe everything from couch potato, to “I did aerobics once three years ago” to people who actually are athletic and toned. It has to be an instant momentum crusher when you meet someone who is neither athletic or toned. While we’re at it, the word “fit” is used way too loosely. She: I do not work out six days a week, however I do train and I am athletic and toned. This is something important in my search. I’ve met men with amazing profile photos of them biking, lifting weights, and even at the beach. Then you meet...and there’s no tone, and the athletic person is long gone. DEAL BREAKER! Not because they weren’t fit (using that term loosely), but because they lied. Bummer. 2. Pictures. He: If someone’s profile picture is a scanned Polaroid Instamatic (remember those?), then you can be pretty sure that it’s not a recent photo. Also, for the life of me, I can never understand the overhead bathroom selfie with pursed lips. Why do

106 August 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

women do that? It’s unnatural. Aren’t they afraid that their faces may freeze in that position? I mean, really; you never see anyone walking around like that. But the obvious picture red flag is when a hottie has seven great professionally done face pictures posted and zero showing anything below the neck. She: UGH! Yes! Pictures matter...I’m guilty of only posting one photo, cropped, not showing anything below the neck. And there’s a very good reason. If I’m not interested in you, why should you have 25 photos of me in various outfits, places, etc? Once there is mutual

interest, I am more than happy to share more - fair is fair. However, I expect your photos to be recent, and not all with a hat on (what are you hiding?, never mind...I now know). I once had a guy send me a selfie that looked NOTHING like the photos on his profile. Me: “Umm, how recent are your profile pictures?” Him: “I knew you were going to ask that. Three years ago.” I never heard from him again. Phew!

3. Height Requirement. He: Every woman wants a man over six feet tall, no matter how short she is. Guess what, ladies? The average American male is 5’10”. This means that most of us are under 6’ tall. If you are 5’2”, you can’t possibly be 6’1” in heels and therefore, you will never tower over us. Isn’t it enough that we still have some hair, most of our teeth, are within 75 lbs of our stated weight and consider ourselves athletic and toned? Sheeeeesh! (tongue planted firmly in cheek) She: Okay. I’m guilty of being attracted to taller men. I’m not going to apologize for it. We all have our preferences. Some men prefer blondes, or big b**** (oobs,utts). There is a reason why dating sites allow you to enter these parameters in the Search Options. And...men lie about height. If you say on your profile 6’ and you’re 5’10” (or shorter) - trust me, we know once we see you. Inches matter...ahem. I have a collection of stilettos and wedges - and I definitely don’t want to be eye to eye or (WORSE) taller than you when we are out. My preference, you don’t have to like it ;) So there you have it folks! These are our top Three - What are yours? Questions/Suggestions? Contact us at info@atlanticavemagazine, subject He Said/She Said. We’d love to hear from you!

a visit to the master

He’s just the best. So when you have a chance to see him and hear him speak about building a great city you drop everything and you go. Especially when you’re invited to share Delray’s story with a national audience. I never miss a chance to promote Delray. After 40 years as mayor of Charleston, one of America’s great cities, Mayor Riley is calling it a career. And what a career it has been. At 72, Mayor Riley is sharp and vigorous and there’s more to do (there’s always more when you’re a mayor who matters) but he’s decided to move on after having shaped, preserved and grown his city for 10 terms. He’s also influenced several generations of Mayors and place makers worldwide and did a masterful job helping his community after the recent tragic church shootings. Charleston is a magical place, imbued with history and character. It’s main street, Kings Street, defies all planning logic: its one-way, doesn’t have the widest sidewalks, its pavement pocked. But it works, even though some bemoan the presence of a ton of national retailers where independents once operated. Mayor Riley spent a lifetime shaping modern day Charleston by preserving the past but carefully ensuring that his city would not be a museum piece. Change happens whether we like it or not or as Riley memorably puts it: “the only human that likes change is an infant wearing a diaper.” Still, he believes that mayors are the primary sales people and architects of their cities and they need to be both every day. And so for 40 years he has sold and promoted Charleston and then shaped the growth he has attracted with a design ethic that has made him a legend. If you love cities, going to see Joe Riley is like watching LeBron James play ball.

Charleston is thought out and made beautiful like the Romans used to do. So you will see interesting pump stations, granite sidewalks and beautiful architecture when you visit his city. All of this costs more, sometimes a whole lot more, but Riley is a believer in the public realm and Charlestonians have been eager to help him via generous donations over the years. “The public realm belongs to everyone. So the poorest person owns the city park as much as the richest person in town does. When you invest in the public infrastructure of a city everybody feels like they have a stake.” The Riley Symposium, hosted by ULI at the College of Charleston was a chance for real estate professionals, architects, developers, planners and others to celebrate Riley’s legacy. Delray Beach was selected to participate because we have a unique success story and have used innovative strategies, financing and policies to revitalize our urban core. It was an honor to be selected and it’s a privilege to share the story with other communities and professionals seeking to move

the needle in their towns. I often feel that we don’t fully appreciate the place we live. It’s special and people from across the country recognize it. That bears repeating: Delray is special and people know it. Mayor Riley told the symposium that Charleston exists for its citizens and businesses but also welcomes and values visitors. “When you create a special place people want to come and experience that place,” he said. “It’s a challenge to manage but you must strike a balance.” Charlestonians–at least the small sampling I met–have an enormous amount of pride in their city as they should. They debate events, development, business mix and affordable housing with gusto but also with a sense of pride. They know they live in a special place. So do we.
