wenty-seven years ago, I spent my first holiday season in Delray Beach. To paraphrase the famous poem, “t’was the night before Christmas” and not much was stirring in sleepy, little Delray Beach. Atlantic Avenue was dark and desolate--not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. So in desperate need of a few last minute gifts, I decided to visit the old Delray Mall on the corner of US 1 and Linton Boulevard, because I knew it would be really busy at the bustling Boynton Beach Mall, which was built in 1985 to capture shoppers because of all the growth in Boynton Beach. But Delray was “Dull Ray” back in those days and so it was that when I went the Delray Mall on Christmas Eve I had the place virtually to myself. It was eerie, no life, no spirit, no vibe. Deadsville. I thought about that long ago holiday season recently as I marveled at the four corners of Linton and U.S 1: a new Trader Joe’s, a new Fresh Market, a new LA Fitness—life, commerce, jobs, energy. I recently dined in a nearby downtown on a beautiful day. The huge restaurant was mostly empty with workers standing around bored. There were vacancies on the main street and very few pedestrians: a sharp contrast to Delray Beach’s thriving downtown. We are so fortunate to live in this place at this time; is the thought that just keeps running through my mind. We are lucky to have a place to gather for a tree lighting because of visionaries like Frances Bourque and Joe Gillie who made Old School Square possible. Yes, yes, I know it’s the Delray Center for the Performing Arts, but it will always be Old School Square to me, a former rusting hulk of a building with chain link fence smack dab in the middle of town. Now, every Friday night we can gather with our friends and listen to music on a great lawn in a beautiful amphitheater. That’s pretty special. Afterwards, we can walk in a downtown that has amazing shops and restaurants---yes sometimes the sidewalk gets crowded and yes we wish we had more retail, but isn’t it a great Main Street? Pineapple Grove used to be scary, now it has an Arts Garage, an Artist’s Alley, a Hyatt, a wine bar, great restaurants and coming soon: an arts warehouse. That’s success, folks. And the best is yet to come. As we enjoy this special season, I hope we can relax and enjoy all that is great about Delray Beach. Shelly Weil and Dr. Virgil Norris. Shelly was a personal friend who worked tirelessly on education issues, starting the Principal for a Day program which linked businesses to schools. He was a tireless champion for the Hamlet and for Scouting and a wonderful man. He will be missed. Dr. Norris was an historic figure in our African American community and a pioneering doctor whose practice touched countless lives and families. We will always remember their amazing contributions. John Campanola, Agent with New York Life and current Chairman of the Ambassadors, will step down from that role at the end of this year. The Ambassador Program consists of volunteers from the Chamber membership who donate their time to assist the Chamber in various activities. The Ambassadors assist in the promotion, volunteer support and development of various Chamber sponsored events. A call for nominees was announced to the community during the summer months and a committee made up of former Business Person of the Year award winners from the last five years, as well as Chairmen of the Board from the last five years formed the 2014 selection committee. The group poured over nomination response forms and scored each nominee based on their responses. This year new awards were added to the line-up including Retailer of the Year,
Restaurant of the Year, New Business of the Year and the Corporate Reach Delray Beach & Beyond award honoring an entrepreneurial company doing significant business nationally and/or internationally. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by the Chamber of Commerce for unprecedented devotion of time, talent and commitment to the community of Delray Beach. This year’s honoree is Tom Lynch. Lynch moved to Florida in 1969 and has served as a leader in the insurance industry for 40 years. As President of Plastridge Insurance, a company originally established in 1919, Lynch has spearheaded the company’s growth and expanded its reach with offices in Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart. As Mayor of Delray Beach in the early 1990’s Lynch played a key leadership role during a time of growth and positive change in Delray Beach. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in December for $50 or less.

However, some days it’s not so easy to channel my inner Buddha and when I’m lacking in the “omm” department, I know exactly where to turn: my stomach. Dear Friend, I’ve got to tell you something I’ve never said out loud. But, what I’m going to tell you makes so much sense that you’ll probably get mad that no one told you this before. I’ve been a doctor in this town for 3 years. And, to this day, I’ve never cured anyone. You may think the word would get around and no one would come to me anymore. The opposite is true. The more people who understand, the more people come to see me. Several times a day, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. And, we get terrific results! That’s why our office is filled with people who have found help nowhere else. Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine. The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. December 5 Chris Rock, this is your life. Outrageous comedian-actor Chris Rock wrote, directed and stars in “Top Five,” as Andre Allan, a comedian-turned actor who sounds a lot like Chris Rock. The setup is Allan is engaged, and he figures he can blaze new trails by turning his wedding into a reality TV show. Rosario Dawson plays journalist Chelsea Brown, who does a reality check on Allan. Rock has assembled an A-list supporting cast, many playing themselves. They include Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, Whoopi Goldberg, Gabrielle Union, Jerry Seinfeld, Romany Malco and Cedric The Entertainer. If you’ve ever wondered about the eternal mysteries of Egypt’s pyramid, “The Pyramid” is a thriller for you. Gregory Levsseur directs a team of young archaeologists who discover a lost

December 12 Action specialist Ridley Scott (“The Counselor”) is back with the biblical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Christian Bale stars as Moses and Joel Edgerton is Ramses in this re-telling of Moses leading an exodus of 600,000 Jewish slaves to freedom in the Promised Land. John Turturro is Seti, Sigouney Weaver is Tuya and Aaron Paul is Joshua, who “fit battle of Jerico.” They said it couldn’t be done, but writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (“The Master”) is not afraid of Thomas Pynchon. Anderson is the first ever to translate one of Pynchon’s weird, nonlinear novels to the screen. In this case it is “Inherent Vice” and stars Joaquin Phoenix as a private investigator in the post-hippie era of 1970 Los Angeles. Sporting huge sideburns, Phoenix’s Larry “Doc” Sportello is out to find out if his ex-girlfriend (Katherine Waterston) is in danger from a plot against her new billionaire boyfriend whose ex-wife wants him declared incompetent and locked away. The cast includes Josh Brolin as Bigfoot Bjornsen, Jenna Malone as Hope Harlingen, Owen Wilson as Coy Harlingen and Benecio Del Toro as Saundo Smilax. Director Peter Jackson is calling “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” the “defining chapter” in the Middle-Earth adventures of little Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). Let’s hope so, because this is the third and final installment in the screen adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved children’s classic. Ian McKellan returns as Gandolf, Andy Serkis animates the fearsome Smeagol dragon; Benedict Cumberbatch is the creepy Necromancer, Manu Bennett is Azog and Luke Evans is Bard. The highlight is an epic 45-minute battle among the armies of the title.
December 19 Aw, do we really have to remake “Annie?” This one is different… a kind of hip hop Annie with darling Quvenzhane Wallis of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” as the title orphan and Jamie Foxx as the Daddy Warbucks-like mayoral candidate Will Stalks, who has Rose Byrne’s Grace as vice president and Bobby Cannaval’s Guy as his shrewd campaign manager. Cameron Diaz has the plum role of mean old orphanage director Miss Hannigan and Jay Z has “re-imagined” Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin’s music. Will Gluck (“Friends With Benefits”) directs and wrote the screenplay with several others.
December 25 Into our Christmas stockings this year is a new version of Stephen Sondheim’s 1987 Broadway musical, “Into the Woods.” Rob Marshall (“Nine,” “Chicago”) directs this Walt Disney remake of Grimm’s fairy tales. The big buzz is about Meryl Streep playing the vain, wicked Witch. Johnny Depp plays a seductive Wolf to Lila Crawford’s Little Red Riding Hood. Anna Kendrick is Cinderella and Chris Pine is her Prince. James Gordon is the Baker and Emily Blunt is his childless wife. Marshall promises it will not be syrupy sweet. “Unbroken” is a dramatization of the real-life World War II hero Louis Zamperini, played by Jack O’Connell. Zamperini survived a plane crash, 47 days adrift on a life raft, capture, and two years in a brutal Japanese prisonerof-war camp. Domhnall Gleeson plays fellow GI Allen Phillips. Angelina Jolie directs, with cinematography by the great Roger Deakins. All kidding aside, is this the proper subject for madcap humor? Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg direct “The Interview” and Rogan plays producer Aaron Rapoport of the tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight,” starring James Franco as Dave Skylark. The show is very popular, and the guys are bemused that North Korean dictator Kim Jon-un is a fan. In an attempt to elevate their credibility, they request and get an interview with the unpredictable leader. Then the CIA steps in and tries to recruit them as assassins of the dangerous despot.

Tennis Injuries:
Cutting Edge Treatments and Prevention Strategies By Dr. John Conde

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is by far one of the most prevalent injuries in tennis. It is caused by the micro-tearing of the extensor group muscles of the elbow.
These muscles are located on the thumb side of the elbow and allow us to bring our wrist back and side to side. Scar tissue can form in the muscle belly which can compress important nerves and blood vessels. It typically occurs secondarily to the use of an aluminum racquet, incorrect grip measurement, improper backhand technique, excess weight of the racquet, and due to too much tension in the strings. Rotator cuff tendonitis is also caused by micro-tearing in the belly of the muscle. The muscles involved are the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder which originate in the shoulder blade (scapula) and attach to the upper arm (humerus). Typically we see this occur with players who serve with an elbow to side angle of less than 90 degrees. Due to the improper mechanics of the serve it typically also requires the player to serve repeatedly. A byproduct of the constant running and cutting in tennis is anterior (front) knee pain located deep, beneath the knee cap (patella). The patella fails to track or move correctly within the knee resulting in frictional forces applied to the lower femur bone and subsequent braking off of small pieces of cartilage. This can lead to a condition called chondromalacia patella. Pain is usually experienced when going up stairs and stopping abruptly while running. The primary goals in treating these disorders are to reduce inflammation, break up the fibrotic adhesions (scar tissue), strengthen surrounding musculature and neurological pathways, and restore proper joint motion. This entails some simple procedures including myofascial release, passive and active

mobilization, isometric and isotonic strengthening, and joint manipulation (adjustment). New cutting edge procedures involve the use of high power class IV lasers which accelerate tissue healing by nearly tenfold and the use of mirrors in a technique termed mirror imaging technique which attempts to strengthen the neurological and immune pathways in the affected limb. In addition, cross cord applications and eccentric fast stretching are novel procedures which decrease the healing time. In terms of nutrition, supplementing with proteolytic enzymes and essential fatty acids will help to reduce inflammation and break down scar tissue. Sticking to an antiinflammatory, low glycemic index diet will also help to reduce inflammation and insulin surges which can promote neurological degeneration Lastly, prevention is the key to avoiding injury all together. Here are some key tips to increase your longevity and effectiveness on the court: 1. Utilize a ceramic or graphite racquet with reduced vibration. 2. Choose a lighter racquet-10.5-11.5 oz. 3. Make sure you have a correct grip measurement. 4. Use natural gut strings, which have tension 3-5lbs below what an athlete is used to. 5. Use proper backhand technique. 6. Warm up prior to playing. 7. Focus on core muscle training. 8. Keep your spine in correct alignment. 9. Strengthen lower extremity musculature. 10. Take multivitamin with plenty of antioxidants.
A real cutting edge procedure is termed motor imaging technique. In essence the athlete visualizes in sets and repetition format, a learned movement such as the various movements on the tennis court. The visualization must be very detailed in nature. Scientifically, the neurological pathways involved in the particular movement are enhanced and other non-pertinent pathways inhibited. We’ve all heard that chocolate, burgers, fries, pizza and many other (delicious) foods can cause acne. We’ve also heard that it’s all a myth. Many skin care professionals however, will tell you there is no link between food and acne. They dismiss the idea because so much of the research is inconclusive.
But the latest research suggests that the food/acne relationship is not a myth.
Refined Carbohydrates Whereas fat-free diets were once a craze, carbohydrates have become the new enemy within the last decade. A study published in Archives of Dermatology shows strong evidence that certain foods can cause breakouts. Noting that acne is primarily a “Western” disease, researchers studied 1200 people in Papua New Guinea and 115 people in Eastern Paraguay (people who eat a diet of fresh plant foods, lean mean and virtually no processed foods or refined sugars) and didn’t see a single pimple. NOT one! Could it just be genetic luck? Unlikely: People with similar genetic makeup living in Western countries, eating a diet rich in refined carbs, saturated fats, and other processed foods, develop pimples. Diets with a high glycemic index (basically, processed foods like bread, pretzels and chips) are quickly broken down into sugar causing insulin levels to spike, which in turn leads to increased sebum production and clogged pores. Physicians recommend eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein – and steering clear of processed foods and sweets.
Dairy Bad news… “milk does the body good” maybe true for bones, but “milk doesn’t do a complexion good.” Recent research on diet and acne shows a link between milk consumption and breakouts. Blame the hormones in dairy. Much of the milk that we drink is produced by pregnant cows and contains high levels of hormones that

can send oil glands into overdrive. Skim milk is even worse than whole milk, partially because it lacks the estrogen found in whole milk to offset the acne producing hormones. Dermatologists are suggesting patients choose almond milk, rice milk, and coconut milk instead of cow’s milk, if they have acne prone skin.
Soy Breaking out with pimples around the mouth and along the jaw line could be caused by tofu and other soy foods. There are natural plant estrogens call phytoestrogens found in soybeans. They could throw off hormones and lead to pimples. Soy derivatives can be found in foods like veggie burgers or energy bars, so read labels carefully if you think soy could be causing you pimples.
Fish Oil Research suggests that the relative intake of omega 6 to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids appears to be an important modulator of inflammation. Omega-6 fatty acids appear to be pro-inflammatory and can lead to inflammatory pimples. Omega-3 fatty acids suppress inflammation. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids or taking Fish Oil supplements with 1,000-2,000 mg/day of EPA should benefit acne because they decrease inflammatory mediators, improve insulin sensitivity and reduce testosterone levels. Probiotics Oral probiotics have been shown to improve acne in multiple international studies. It appears that probiotics help in the digestive process and can reduce not only gut inflammation but inflammation in the skin as well. Acne patients who consumed a Lactobacillus-fer-
mented beverage for 12 weeks produced less sebum (oily secretions) and had fewer acne lesions. Taking a supplement or eating yogurt with live culture may help reduce the number of acne lesions. While diet alone may not responsible for all acne pimples, evidence is very strong that diet significantly impacts the skin. Dermatologists are now emphasizing dietary modifications in conjunction with tried and true standard therapies for acne. A nutritious diet that keeps one’s inside healthy will help also keep the outward appearance looking good. On the other hand, a poor diet will show up on your skin. Thomas C. Balshi, M.D., P.A. Don’t let sweet treats ruin your holiday cheer
It’s holiday season! This means parties galore, sweet tasty tonics and sugarcoated everything. Eating all that sugar can cause harm to your teeth, but you can steer clear of cavities if you make sure you follow simple tips to protect your mouth. Avoid foods that take a long time to chew. Sticky foods such as gummy candy, dried fruit and caramel can damage your teeth for a couple of reasons. Not only do you have to chew longer to break down the food, which spreads the sugar to all corners of your mouth, the sticky bits can get stuck in the crevices in your teeth and remain there until you have a chance to brush. In the simplest breakdown possible, cavities are caused when sugar enters the mouth. Bacteria eat the sugar and this creates acid that weakens enamel. After 20 minutes, saliva neutralizes acid, but in that 20 minute period, cavities are forming. Drink water after drinking sweet beverages. You can still enjoy your favorite holiday wine, champagne and juices, but make sure you rinse your mouth with water frequently. This will wash away acid and any stains that have built up from the consumption of these acidic beverages and will keep you hydrated, thus keeping your saliva levels where they should be. Brush your teeth on the go. Taking the time to brush your teeth in the morning and at night are very important to your oral health, but if you’re able to brush on the go, that will just help combat cavities even more. Brushing your teeth after eating big meals and holiday treats will help remove unwanted food that sticks around in the mouth, and will also make sure your breath stays fresh for all of your mingling!

Chew sugar free gum. Gum is a great option when you don’t have your toothbrush handy. Chewing gum helps wash out food particles and produces natural saliva to help balance the acid in your mouth. Another plus side to chewing gum is that it will help you manage your sugar intake and not give in to the candy offerings lurking around every corner. Don’t stress out! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when there’s shopping, baking, cooking, entertaining, added family members, traveling, etc. added into the mix during the holiday season. All of this stress can cause you to grind or clench your teeth, which could cause jaw pain and can lead to more harsh issues like chipped or broken teeth. Remember to keep calm and party on, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Floss more. Flossing is always very important, and if you don’t floss, you aren’t properly cleaning about 30 percent
of your tooth’s surface. Make sure you’re keeping up with your flossing routine so you don’t get stuck with a mouth full of cavities from all of your favorite sweets this season. Many of us spend the holiday season “retoxing:” we eat, we drink, we stress, we travel, we loose sleep. We talk about our commitments after the holidays, yet there are ways to keep a balance in your health at any time, detoxing a little every day to keep your body and mind strong and clear.
It’s always essential to start with gut health. Your gut is the most important part of your body to take care of, as gut problems affect every single organ and hinder every cell’s ability to function. An unhealthy gut can lead to several issuesfrom flatulence to allergies to skin problems like breakouts, hyper-pigmentation, and even wrinkles and sagging. It’s even associated with emotional unease. Healthy Through The Holidays

The holiday season is full of family gatherings, festive parties and holiday shopping which often comes with skipping workouts and deviating from your diet.
Sure you want to enjoy the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving dinner or a few glasses of champagne at your New Year’s Eve party, but is it worth the extra 10 pounds you’ll be carrying come January? Luckily there is a way to enjoy the holidays while sticking to your plan and without turning into a miserable scrooge. My first tip is to practice moderation. Pick and choose your treats wisely. If you wait all year to have your mom’s famous Christmas cookies then go ahead and have one but that doesn’t mean have one of everything on the dessert table! Pick your favorite treat to enjoy in a controlled amount and truly savor it while you’re eating. Don’t mindlessly shove the treat in your mouth while talking to a friend or family member but chew it slowly and you’ll feel much more satisfied. Most importantly know that you are allowed to eat off your plan occasionally without any guilt as long as you hop right back on your plan the next day! My second tip is to manage stress. The holidays are notorious for added stress, which can also tip the scales in the wrong direction. With all the shopping, cooking, planning and celebrating, people’s schedules are often jam packed this time of year. Sometimes you need to put your own well being first even if that means saying “no” to a certain event or not always checking everything off your “to-do” list. Lack of sleep, poor planning and skipped workouts will only take you farther away from your goals. My third tip is to make sure to get a workout in. Make sure to take some time for yourself and do your best not to com-

promise on your workouts. Schedule your workouts in advance and stick to it as though it were any other important appointment! Even if it is simply finding 20 minutes to take a walk around your neighborhood, anything is better than nothing. Plus when you manage to exercise daily, it will motivate you to eat better throughout the day as well. With these helpful tips comes the New Year; you’ll be well on your way to achieving your health and fitness goals. Just be

Everyone says the same thing about Lisbeth and Eduardo Garcia of Puro’s Cigar Shop. The young and old, conservative or liberal, plumber or surgeon they all agree that the Garcia’s are the nicest people on the planet.
And after attending their 5th anniversary soiree we can honestly say it’s not hyperbole, it’s true. As a way of celebrating their successful cigar business, Eduardo, Lisbeth and Jesus held their annual fête that included a barbeque and festive party. There was a white tent in the parking lot (with gold chandelier) music, dancing and a delicious barbeque prepared by friends J.C. and Miguel. Long tables gave everyone a chance to sit together and savor the feeling of friendship. It is this camaraderie - and the good vibes - that keeps regulars like Ray Sayour coming back to Puro’s. “I’ve been coming here for five years and I’m here almost every day for a cigar. Eduardo and Lisbeth are sweethearts. They treat you like family, they always remember my birthday and when I needed help a while ago Eduardo was there for me,” said the sales manager for the healthcare industry. Jerry Abrams, who lives in Delray, feels the same way about Puro’s and its founders. The extremely fit octogenarian stops by Puro’s a few times a month and relishes the male bonding that takes place. “Puro’s has a great selection of cigars and the owners treat you so well. Some days I sit outside with the men and we talk about all kinds of things, except for politics or religion. You meet the most interesting people here – some are executives, others are plumbers or doctors, but we have interesting conversations,” said Abrams, who came to the party with his wife of 57 years, Phylliss. Tremblay and wife Natasha came from Montreal for the Puro’s 5th anniversary party. They met five years ago when Marc was on vacation in Delray and stopped in to buy a cigar. “This is the best place to smoke a cigar. Everyone talks to each other and it’s a unique friendly place. Eduardo even came to our wedding,” said Marc. Lisbeth had another reason to be happy that night. The Garcia’s have been waiting five years for a delivery of the Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigars. Known as one of the highest rated cigar brands, the Opus X has a rich robust flavor and is now available at Puro’s. The cigar business was never in the master plan for the Garcia family. Legend has it that Eduardo was in the restaurant business in Canada and New York and Lisbeth was in real estate in Miami. They wanted to open a restaurant but the right location never turned up. So they immersed themselves in the cigar business and learned about the industry. Let’s just say a lot of people are pretty happy about that decision. “I love the fact that Puro’s is a family owned business and that the Garcia’s started this business themselves. When you come here you feel the warmth and friendliness of everyone. They are like family to me and that is why they will always get my business,” adds Sayour. There are other reasons for the success of Puro’s. Their cigars are well priced and they have a popular private label brand as well. The holiday season is upon us. Yes the year has flown by and now we don’t know where it went, but the good news is this: Delray Beach is always a great place to spend the holidays. But while the calendar is teeming with cool events and activities we know that can cut both ways. So in an effort to help you navigate the holiday season we offer five tips to get the most out your Atlantic Ave holiday season.
Book early. If you want to spend New Year’s at your favorite Delray restaurant you are not alone. So we advise getting your reservations early if possible to avoid disappointment. That goes for Christmas as well. If you have small children and want to have breakfast with Santa, book early because Santa is a very popular guy around these parts. We recommend you monitor www.downtowndelraybeach.com for events, information and to make reservations.

Consider a stay-cation. Delray is home to several delightful hotels. Why not act like a tourist and stay downtown? You may pay a little premium but you’ll save on gas and be able to walk to all the stores and restaurants. After your retail therapy, consider a spa package to relax and then dinner and a night out at one of Delray’s 130 eateries and nightclubs.

Shop local. For several years running we have challenged ourselves to do all of our holiday shopping downtown. It’s a fun endeavor, you’ll discover stores you didn’t know exist and you will be supporting your local economy. Gift certificates to our many spas and service providers are always good ideas. Pineapple Grove has a lot of unique shops and service providers, of course the Avenue is teeming with options and also make sure to visit the beach district which has an array of cute little shops with lots of Delray themed merchandise.

The Must Sees. If you have to limit yourself to the must attend events, we recommend the following: The annual lighting of the 100 foot tree on December 4 at approximately 6 p.m. But while that’s when the lighting occurs you’ll want to get there early to beat the traffic, secure a parking spot and a good vantage point for the lighting, which is always spectacular. Look for Santa to arrive via helicopter, lots of music and a big crowd of locals and visitors alike. A great place to mingle and get a first glimpse inside the 100 foot tree. After the lighting, stay downtown for a holiday themed “On the Ave” from 6 to 10 p.m. The event runs on East Atlantic Ave from Swinton Ave to 5th Ave(the avenue will be closed for the event). Enjoy music, art, food and entertainment. Our other can’t miss recommendation is the annual Holiday Parade. This year’s parade is set for December 13 at 6 p.m. on East Atlantic Avenue beginning east of the Intracoastal and continuing west to the Fire Department. The theme is “Holiday Movies.” Trust us, when we say that the parade is truly spectacular. We advise getting downtown early to either get a seat on a sidewalk café or a nice spot on the curb. Bands, local organizations and businesses go all out for this event. Parking can be found at the county courthouse and library garage for $5 as well as various lots and garages downtown. If you want to feel truly Floridian, head to the Intracoastal Waterway (Veterans Park is ideal) and take in the annual BoyntonDelray Holiday Boat Parade also set for December 13 at 6:30 p.m. View a plethora of decorated boats and nautical Santa’s as they cruise the intracoastal.

Consider Giving. If you want to get into the holiday spirit please consider giving this season to those less fortunate. The Police Department and local businesses team up for the annual Holiday toy drive which collects new, unwrapped toys for children who otherwise wouldn’t get a gift. Drop off points are local businesses all over town and the Police Department.

It’s passion that drives both Joe Ardagna and Whitney Smith to be tops in their field. And it is respect that cements their relationship and partnership to such an enviable level.

Joe and Whitney are both hair stylists and colorists with a penchant for making clients look and feel beautiful. It may sound trite, but when talking to their loyal clients you hear it time and time again. “Whitney blows out my hair three times a week and cuts and colors it. She is so talented. I have never met anyone who works harder to make her clients happy,” said Donna Paolino, a Delray real estate investor. Monica feels the same way about Joe. “Joe cuts, colors and styles my hair. He is such a master at what he does and he always knows what the best trend or color is for my hair. I always feel beautiful when I leave.”

There’s a reason why Joe seems to be clairvoyant when it comes to his customer’s optimal beauty. He is always taking classes and keeping up with the latest trends for clients. “I am always thinking about my clients before they come in the salon. The reason is that my job is to make them feel and look beautiful. If there is a new color or style that I think will look good on them I suggest it,” said Joe, a board certified colorist who has been cutting, styling and coloring hair for over 30 years. Joe’s clients are quick to note that he listens to them and does what they want, but if they need a suggestion (or are suffering from
the blahs) he has the perfect solution. “Joe cuts and colors my hair and adds extensions that look beautiful and natural. He does what I want, but if I ask him for advice he always has the right answer. He has a sixth sense about hair and is incredibly professional. Everyone loves Joe,” said Susan Mirgon. The accolades for both Joe and Whitney are astounding. Clients like the way they play off each other and are happy to have two great minds in one space. This loyalty and respect from clients has resulted in the duo’s recent expansion of their shop at In the Grove Hair Studio. They now have double the space, a full-time assistant and a separate color room. “Our new European-style color room is in the round and has a great vibe to it. People get to sit with others (and interact) rather than sit alone facing a mirror.” Joe knew the moment he met Whitney that she had the “it” factor, and he was right. The beautiful statuesque blond is known for her caring heart and ability to transform clients. “Whitney is a miracle worker. She got my hair to grow and improved the health of it. She cuts and colors my hair and it looks amazing. You can tell that Whitney genuinely cares about her clients,” said Tara. Both Joe and Whitney know that artistry is part of the equation when cutting, styling and coloring hair or adding hair extensions (by Great Length Extensions). Both are quick to note a popular trend in hair color is “Color Melting, Sombre and Color blurring,” which is so natural it looks like the sun did it. They also accommodate client’s schedules when neces-
sary. “We can’t do enough for our clients,” said Joe. “If they need to come in on a Sunday or Monday we honor their special requests.” Whitney also takes this customer service kindness a step further by making fresh homemade apple butter for clients during the holidays. “I am thankful for where I am today and for the partnership I have with Joe. We pride ourselves on being one step ahead of others when it comes to trends in color, cutting and styling,” said Whitney who

was born and raised in Delray. Stacey Spivack is one person who is glad that Joe saw Whitney’s golden touch. “I come two times a week to have Whitney blow out my hair. She also puts extensions in my hair that are so natural you would never know I have them. She got my hair in excellent condition after other people damaged it and now she keeps my hair looking great.” This dynamic duo is in perfect sync with the community and their clients. It shows in the respect their clients have for them and the distance they drive (or fly) to see them. Joe has one client who comes from Canada and another who came every few months from Maryland. “I used to have Joe cut and color my hair every few months even though I lived in Maryland. I relied on him, if he wasn’t so great I would have found someone in Washington, but he is the best,” said Mirgon. It’s easy to see why clients of Joe and Whitney clamor to have them cut, color, style and adds extensions to their hair. It’s also the reason they added extra space to meet the growing demand for their services. This is one team that is consistently scoring a winning goal.

The group also went on to talk about how they’ve been working on several other big projects ranging from cigars, to dog food, to wine, to a few huge players in the medical and architectural fields. “We do a little bit of everything; which makes it a really cool place to work! We’re always thinking about and discussing something new! We’re constantly pushing ourselves to come up with fresh and thoughtful ways to approach a project” says Kristen Smeehuyzen, Art Director. “It’s exciting!”

We all want to push back the clock, but before you elect to go under the knife or get injected, take a look at how your smile measures up. Do you have a healthy, youthful smile or are your teeth adding years to your face?
The color and brightness of your teeth, the strength of your tooth enamel, the health of your gums and the overall shape and alignment of your teeth are paramount to maintaining a youthful appearance. The impression you make with your smile impacts how others see you, and more importantly, how you see yourself. In fact, a study conducted by oral hygiene company Oral-B found that “white teeth can make you appear five years younger and increase your attractiveness by 20 percent.” All without going under the knife. A 2013 survey conducted by The Mirror newspaper of London revealed that “58 percent of men notice a woman’s teeth first when judging whether they fancy them.” Whatever age you are, a beautiful smile ups your attraction factor to the opposite sex significantly. Some of us have taken measures to look after our teeth and gums over the years and the results are a healthy, vibrant and youthful smile. But many people have avoided looking after their dental health, altogether, which can result in a declined overall appearance. And apart from keeping up appearances, an unhealthy smile can also affect the quality of your life according to a June 25, 2012 article published in Psychology Today. The article states that “each time you smile you throw a little feel-good party in your brain. The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness.” It goes on to state, “The feel good neurotransmitters dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released when a smile flashes across your face as well. This not only relaxes your body, but it can lower

your heart rate and blood pressure.” So those who are insecure about their smile and avoid smiling are actually shortchanging themselves both psychologically and physiologically. Founded in 1963, SEMA stands for Specialty Equipment Market Association. Its yearly show, held November 4-7 this year, is the largest show of its kind in the world. It attracted more than 60,000 people from 100 countries. You can’t buy a ticket to the show. It is a trade-only venue for professional car dealers, custom and restoration shops, race car teams, accessory manufacturers and media. I got an admission badge from my young friend Kevin Haeberle, 32. Haeberle had four cars in the show, customized and painted by him at a Santa Barbara, CA shop. Kevin invited me to surprise his father Carl, a former Boca Raton resident whom I befriended when we were both 13. Carl likes to blame me for infecting him with the car bug. Carl has owned a couple of antique cars (his current is a ’64 Chevy Nova) and he worked in a British car restoration shop before becoming a “rocket scientist” for Raytheon aerospace corporation. SEMA attendees filled the major hotels along the Las Vegas “Strip.” The best way to

get to the show is via the Monorail, which has seven stops along the strip. Waiting in line at the MGM Grand Station reminded me of Disney World, with a line that snaked and curled deceptively. It took about 45 minutes to finally get on the train. It was worth it for the look of surprise on Carl’s face when I met him and Kevin at the Convention Center entrance. I thought Kevin was exaggerating when he said it takes all four days and 40 miles of walking to cover the whole show. He was not! Overwhelming is the best way to describe the SEMA show. Car builders and restorers have their best work on display. Accessory vendors often have pretty girls or celebrities to draw attention. Mario Andretti signed autographs. Billy Gibbs of ZZ Top introduced the group’s newest hot rod. Car builder Chip Foose is a celebrity in his own right. If you have a favorite automotive-related reality TV show, more like than not the hosts were there. Educational seminars are held, and outside on a track, race car drivers put their iron to the test. Free rides are offered by manufacturers,

2014: A Look Back

It’s hard to believe, but 2014 is coming to a close. We take a look at the top six issues of the year and next month will preview the issues and trends to look for in 2015.
A Piece of History Sells-- The sale of the Sundy House to Hudson Holdings was the biggest real estate deal in downtown Delray in over a decade at over $20 million, showing the strong belief that investors have in the city. The Sundy House is said to be the oldest

house in Delray (some claim the distinction belongs to the Cathcart House which was also included in the deal) and was the home of Delray’s first mayor. Now a restaurant and small inn featuring magnificent gardens, the Sundy House holds a special place in Delray’s history.
Plans call for an expansion of the inn into more of a boutique hotel and the addition of significant retail to bring downtown’s growth south and west of East Atlantic Avenue. The plans have delighted and angered residents on both sides of the growth divide with some worried about losing the historic nature

Jarjura angered some with her support for Sundy House’s plans but also delighted those who admired her ability to stand up for what she believes in. On issues large and small she has distinguished herself with tough and detailed questioning making her a local elected official to watch, and a clear leader on the commission often casting the deciding vote. A Red Hot Market-- Real Estate continued to sizzle especially downtown and in some “close in” neighborhoods including Lake Ida, Palm Trail and the beach. Downtown prices have reached $1,000 a square foot with the landmark George proper-

ties housing The Green Owl and Huber’s Drugs listed for a whopping $21.5 million. Homes in Lake Ida which sold for $300s-$400s a short while ago are now well over a million with some listed for $2 million plus. The rental market is also hot, with some properties in downtown Delray renting for $5,000-$8,000 a month. Recovery issues take precedence-- The issue of sober houses continued to rage in Delray in 2014 with efforts still under way to find a legal means of controlling their business practices and proliferation. While the issue isn’t new, the heat surrounding the topic is hotter than ever. Crime-- Crime continues to be a concern in 2014 with a rash of shootings concentrated in neighborhoods near West Atlantic Avenue. An incident in the Marina Historic District stoked fears and prompted residents to organize and demand more police protection. New Chief Jeff Goldman has responded with strategies designed to increase dialogue between residents and officers. Under his leadership officers are out and about and connecting with residents reviving a strategy that worked wonders in the 90s.

Entrepreneurship takes root-2014 saw a rash of new entrepreneurs asserting themselves with events and new businesses. Start Up Delray and Next Delray are just some of the efforts underway to organize and build an entrepreneurial ecosystem. But entrepreneurial thinking is not limited to business, civic and cultural entrepreneurs are emerging as well. Human Powered Delray, Wellfest and a Rising Tides task force have formed to tackle walkability, healthy lifestyles and climate change. The Arts Garage pioneered a successful model in Delray and has expanded its operations to Pompano Beach, and the nascent Artists’s Alley community has developed a brand and a niche in a short period of time. Will entrepreneurship flower or wilt? That depends on whether the city can encourage the development of more amenities attractive to millennials, who also need office space downtown and want more restaurants, retail and housing options in what has become the region’s most desirable downtown. In January, we will take a look at the issues and trends to watch for in 2015.

BOB LEVINSON A Man Of Integrity By Diane Feen

They don’t make them like Bob Levinson anymore. Like a rare coin or a Stradivarius the inner workings (and outer manifestation) of this Delray Beach man are rare in today’s world.
Levinson believes in paying civic rent (doing good things in the community), helping others (without lavish outings with his name attached) and hard work. As a matter of fact, work has always been the keystone of his life and something that was never a means to an end. Rather it was a means to gratification and creative challenges. Levinson, who still works as a Senior Development Officer at Lynn University, is about to turn 90. Yet he doesn’t mention the word retirement and recently published his fifth book, “Full Circle: A Love Story,” about his second chance at love. This book, unlike the other four devoted to business, is about his experience of falling in love again after losing his wife of 61 years. You could say that Levinson is a master at turning lemons into lemonade. He should be, given his business pedigree. “When I was 11- years-old I had a lemonade stand and when I sold all my lemonade I showed my mother the money I made and she quickly subtracted for the goods I used – the lemons, the sugar and the cups. I ended up with no profit,” said the Cincinnati native. Though this reality check at such a young age might have dashed a weaker man’s dreams, it propelled this executive-in-training to higher rungs. He started out in the family business making metal doors (at Steelcraft Manufacturing) and when it was sold to American Standard he became Group Vice President. While working at American Standard Levinson got an itch to buy a Holiday Inn Hotel in Pompano Beach, and after ten years he left the corporate world he so beautifully inhabited. One has to wonder why a successful corporate executive – in charge of thousands of people -

would trade his corner office to fret over matching drapes and bellboys. “I loved the hotel business, every day was opening night! I also enjoy building up a business and running it. It’s like an artist painting on a blank canvas. There is something exciting about bringing people and assets together,” said the perennial student of human behavior. Levinson built two more hotels (including the Sheraton in Boca Raton) but eventually left the hospitality industry and settled into a career with more academia and less corporate hierarchy. But true to his belief of sharing his good fortune, Levinson left behind invaluable life lessons about business, management, customer service and humanity. For “Forbes Magazine” he wrote about corporate management (he called them corporate robots), in the “The Presidents Forum” he wrote about “How to Become A Hired Hand And Like It,” and for “The Cincinnati Enquirer” he wrote about the importance of customer service. There are dozens of other articles penned by this wise businessman (that are piled sky high in his Delray office) as well as four other books, “Super Savvy,” “The Decentralized Company, “The Anti Retirement Book,” and “Management Savvy.” Each book is filled with lessons on how to excel as a manager, a leader, and an exemplary steward of human kind. His belief that excellent customer service is the Holy Grail inspired Levinson to write the first customer service course taught at The College of Boca Raton (now Lynn University). He also guest lectured at FAU on business and leadership and was on so many boards, educational committees and civic activities that his resume is two full pag-
es single spaced. They range from President of The United Way of Palm Beach County to Chairman of the Board of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and Vice President of the Boca Raton Museum (there are 40 in all). Levinson doesn’t just pay his civic rent, he owns the auditorium. “Bob has a pas-
sion for giving and has received United Way’s Tocqueville Society Award for philanthropy. He’s been a teacher to me and has helped other people become successful. He’s passionate about helping and his positive ‘can do’ attitude is admirable,” said Laurie George, the President and CEO of United Way of Palm Beach County.
Levinson shares United Way’s obsession with putting an end to the hunger problem that lies within our feet in Palm Beach County. “Did you know that there are 65,000 children right here with a hunger problem? Too many people are not willing to share their success and help others. If I had a magic wand I would do something about this issue right away. I get great joy doing good for others.” That’s an understatement. Levinson has been helping others since he was a teen. In high school he volunteered in the Fire Department operating the radio from midnight till 8 am. He also was in charge of the dances, ran the bookstore and promoted events. In his personal relationships Levinson brings that same selfless zeal. “Bob deeply cares for others and enriches the lives of many at Harbors Edge. He brings music students from Lynn University to give concerts and is always looking to help people quietly and with dignity,” said friend and neighbor Bernice Wiener. It is with this same dignity that he handles his personal life. He was married to Phyllis for 61 years and found love again with Zelda Luxenberg (who co-authored his latest book with Carol Clarke). When asked how he keeps the flame burning bright on the home front he has this to say: “I try to go 51 percent and do more than is expected. Success in a family means having respect, being devoted and taking in interest in the other person’s health and welfare.” His most prized possessions, according to Levinson, are his two sons Jon and James, six grandchildren and great granddaughter. Levinson doesn’t believe in retirement and advises others to keep busy, laugh and make friends. “We only take this trip once in life. So many people say ‘I wish I could have done this or that.’ The key is to keep the juices going in your mind and body.” Seems like Levinson practices what he preaches. “Bob is a daily inspiration for all those who know him,” says former mayor Jeff Perlman, who shares office space with Levinson. “At almost 90 Bob has more energy than people half his age and has twice the wisdom. I enjoy talking national politics with him. Although we tend to agree I always learn things. He’s a wonderful man.”

There’s a large sign outside announcing the arrival of Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza on Atlantic Avenue. What was once the site of Irish fare has been replaced by authentic homemade Italian food from Luigi’s hometown of Naples, Italy.

There is something else different about this cavernous space – it’s been renovated and reborn with just the right amount of Italian art, polished cherry wood and vibrance. The mastermind of Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza in Delray came to the US nine years ago armed with family recipes and culinary expertise. Luigi’s parents owned a restaurant in Naples and by the age of 16 he was enrolled in a Culinary School in Italy. When he came to the United States he worked his way up to head chef of Tuscan Grille in Ft. Lauderdale and then opened his first Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza on Las Olas Blvd. Though Luigi’s started in Ft. Lauderdale, the Delray Beach location is larger and the menu is more comprehensive. There is one thing that is static though – and it’s that Luigi continues the Napoli legacy of authenticity
when it comes to pizza, especially the Margherita Napoletana Pizza (which is delicious). That means he uses Caputo “OO” flour, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes from Naples and the San Marzano region of Italy. He also follows many of the rules of the Verace Pizza Napoletana, an internationally recognized group of authentic Neopolitan-style pizza makers. Their Margherita Napoletana Pizza is made with Tomato Sauce, Fresh Organic Basil, Fresh Homemade Mozzarella and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. “Did you know this pizza is from the 4th century in Naples. The King of England was on vacation in Italy and he was hungry so they made him the Margherita Napoletana Pizza the recipe has never been changed,” said Luigi, who still adheres to this recipe. There are other wonderful pizzas on the menu and all are made in one of their special Coal Ovens. Favorites are the Vegetariana (with mozzarella cheese, tomato, zucchini, olives, artichokes, sweet peppers, peperoncini and fresh sautéed mushrooms) and the Truffle Pizza, which has mozzarella, Romano, French Goat cheese, spinach, sautéed mushrooms and drizzled with white truffle oil. In the Delray location the new menu has homemade pasta dishes and entrees. But the pizza is a big draw, and rightfully so. “Luigi’s Delray has the best pizza. The staff was friendly, the prices were good and Luigi’s special pizza is one of the best I’ve ever had, even in Italy,” said Lizzie.

Luigi’s also specializes in chicken wings and makes them with his own flavor-filled recipe. The organic chicken is marinated with Italian herbs, roasted in the oven and served with caramelized onions and Focaccia Bread. They also serve Panini’s with homemade bread and a variety of meats and cheeses. The most exciting news is that Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza Delray has exceptional homemade pastas. And the best part is that Luigi’s cousin from Italy, Mimmo is making them. Perhaps that is the reason the fresh homemade Meat Lasagna is one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Made with ground beef, celery, carrots, onions, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh Ricotta and Mozzarella cheese, this dish is outstanding. The Lasagna comes to your table piping hot in an iron skillet and is pure ecstasy. Other excellent pasta dishes are Rigatoni Carbonara (with sautéed onions with imported Italian Pancetta Apple Wood Smoked Bacon with a Touch of Cream and Egg with Pecorino Romano), Paglia e Fieno, made with Spinach and Egg Fettuccini and then Sautéed with Imported Prosciutto di Parma, Sweet Peas and a Touch of Cream, and their Four Cheese Ravioli with Luigi’s Homemade Marinara Sauce and fresh Basil. Luigi also serves fresh fish of the day, homemade meatballs and spaghetti (the recipe was his grandmother Anastacia’s), Eggplant Parmigiana and entrees such as Chicken or Veal Parmigiana, Francese, Saltimboca or Marsala. Luigi’s Delray also has a great Happy Hour menu from 4pm to 7pm weekdays 4pm to 6pm on weekends. For $6 you get a plate of
Fresh homemade pasta - either Penne with tomato sauce, Four Cheese Ravioli, or Manicotti with Ricotta and sautéed spinach topped with marinara and Mozzarella. There are salads, homemade meatballs and Italian specialties for under $9. There are other surprises at this local Italian restaurant - one of them is Luigi Fries, which are thinly sliced homemade potatoes chips. The Luigi Truffle Fries with Romano cheese and truffle oil are superb and will have you dreaming about them long after they’re gone. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza Delray also has a full bar menu and an upbeat authentic wood bar that is irresistible. Bartender Brady Tucker has full command of the space and offers up some new favorites such as his Blood Orange Sangria (you must try this) and over 50 wines by the glass. The desserts are also amazing. The homemade Tiramisu is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. With its creamy texture, espresso shavings and chocolate chips this is Tiramisu for the Gods. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza is a real find. The service is excellent, the food is homemade and scrumptious and the atmosphere is festive. Server Chris sums it up quite succinctly, “I have worked at a lot of restaurants and the food here is about the best. Pet Obesity… A Modern Day Challenge?
I
f you are like most caring pet owners, you strive to keep your pets healthy and happy. You follow the regular schedule of veterinary visits with all the customary vaccinations, preventative, and testing. You walk your pets or exercise them regularly and feedi the best food that you were recommended. Your pets seem happy and all tests show that they’re healthy except they are chubby. Yes, your pet is overweight. As in humans, our pets have succumbed to modern day reality of obesity in spite of our efforts and good intentions. Is it a fact that we must just accept, along with all the health risks associated with those extra pounds? Joint problems, diabetes, cancers and other chronically debilitating disorders are all linked to excess body fat. The general approach to this problem is diet and exercise. Are you following the recommended food, walking and excercising until neither one of you can move and it’s not working. You changed to a special diet food and are only feeding half of what it says on the bag and they are still gaining weight. Why is this happening? Veterinarians, because of their lack of training in nutrition and species specific physiology, are ill equipped to effectively advise of
threats brought on by these challenges. All they really know is that the bag or package says weight loss. The main challenge starts with our dependence on easy, fast food and slick marketing. Today’s manufactured pet foods are really a convenience food, not a nutritious, lifestyle health plan. Most of these foods are highly processed, loaded with carbohydrates and sugars as well as many synthetic chemicals and additives. These are the real causes for the weight gain. Dogs and cats being carnivores are designed to only consume and digest animal-based foods. This is in their anatomy by design and their physiology of function. When they consume carbohydrates, they lack the enzymes in their saliva to digest them. Instead they are broken down to sugar that their body converts to stored fat. In addition, the synthetic chemicals in the food additives, preventive drugs, cleaning products, lawn chemicals, and others that ourselves and our pets are exposed to daily are primarily stored in fat cells. That exasperates the weight challenge as the body needs more of these toxin storing fat cells. Cutting the food intake has little real benefit as the body requires metabolic (usable) calories to fuel and heal the body. If that require-
ment is not met, the body goes into a starvation mode that slows metabolism thus making then lethargic and then consequently stores energy by creating more fat cells. What is the solution? We went to nature and noticed there are no obesity challenges in most wild populations. There are also no exercise classes or equipment, diet pills or special diets. So how do they stay fit and healthy? The secret is simple, they all eat a natural, species specific raw diet that is provided by nature. Carnivores eat a variety of animal-based food. They consume most of the body parts in a programmed ratio based on the body’s needs. They also detoxify by eating and drinking specific foods. They are not storing synthetic toxins or converting inappropriate foods. When we change to that appropriate diet, we see incredible results in weight loss, muscle building, better skin and coat, and recovery from all forms of health challenges. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “Santa, All I Want For Christmas...” In the middle of November, I attended a company management retreat. With three offices across the U.S., we don’t really get to know each other fairly well since we mainly stay connected via phone and email. This was a great way to bond in an effort to be more of a cohesive and unified team. Our “circle of trust” was an interesting dynamic. Beyond our ownership, I represented the single, career woman. We had two married men under age 40 with kids, an over 40, divorced man with two kids, who for the sake of this conversation appears to be in a “somewhat” committed relationship. Our marketing coordinator, a sweet, naïve young man, currently in his second real job out of college joined us as well as our Director of Finance, the only other woman in our group. At forty four, with a husband, a seven year old son and a busy job, she doesn’t get to cut loose much. Our days were spent working but by happy hour back at the hotel lobby, it became apparent that this group excluding the “youngster,” all couldn’t wait to unwind with a drink, or two or three. I, however, went most nights without consuming adult beverages and sat to be social, gathering important intelligence for my next column. What makes this experience so interesting is that I appeared to be the one with the fabulous life in South Florida. They all truly believed that I spend my nights partying into the wee hours in South Beach, barely making it to my desk by 8:00 a.m. Each one of my colleagues apparently lives vicariously thru the life they believed I live every day in sunny Florida, a bit envious of my freedom from spouses and kids. On cue, Rod Serling’s voice blared in my head: “You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!” Reality Check; I am 43, single yet successful , but still looking for Mr. Right and maybe

a kid or two. In my eyes, my life is far from glamorous. I get up every morning, work a long day and then with whatever energy is left in the tank, head to the gym, make dinner and collapse on my couch. My co-workers loved lounging on comfy couches, relishing in time away from their families and their ability to “chillax” in peace and quiet for a few days. It was like the ultimate contradiction. Single=ultimate happiness. Coupled= “I’ll have another, and another.” Something was very wrong with this picture. They say the grass is always greener. It’s funny how I felt like the social outcast before I arrived in Texas, as clearly, my lifestyle is so different than theirs. I can’t really relate to their daily lives because I spend my life, fairly free to come and go as I please. I can’t help but be a little envious of their familial wealth but nonetheless, each and every one of them wanted to live my apparent “privileged”, single life. Even more shocking was the attitude of our marketing coordinator. Twenty-four, smart and good looking, this All American boy isn’t looking to land a one night stand or drink to excess. Each night the coupled men tried, with not much success, to hook him up with the cocktail waitress, the bartender or the young front desk agent in the lobby. He wanted no part of it. They wanted to live vicariously thru him. It’s amazing to me how a young man in his prime wasn’t looking for a good time but rather a future bride and a family sooner, than later. Was this really happening? Did I miss something? I bet this December, some of my colleagues may sneak a letter to Santa. Here are a few wishes I collected, that are bound to make their way to the North Pole: -Happy Hour once a week? Can we just go out with a few buddies or girlfriends and not have to race home? What does it take to ingest a drink in peace? -King bed all to myself? Yes, please. Not
sharing with a spouse, kids and the family dog appears to be like a dream come true. Just allow me one night a week to have the bed all to myself. -Do I have to roll in this mini-van? What happened to my cool car without a car seat, soccer gear, dog hair or McDonald’s wrappers on the floor? Apparently being single is the best thing since sliced bread. It’s just another example of wanting what you can’t have. In the spirit of the holidays, I truly hope that each of my colleagues receives at least one of their wishes. I, on the other hand, won’t be asking for any of the above. I like my single life. Life is really good! However, Santa, if you are reading this, my wishes are pretty simple. Send me the magic diet pill, a great pair of comfortable designer high heels. Oh and Mr. Right, if you can find him. I have been a very good girl this year, I promise! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

Be a Host, not a Hero
{
A few weeks ago a good friend of mine sent me an article about one of my favorite subjects: leadership.
There are a lot of articles and books about leadership and to be honest a great many of them miss the mark, but this particular article was one of the best I’ve ever read on the subject and I feel the need to tell you about it. Basically, the author argues that there are two styles of leadership: a “hero” and a “host.” The hero leader takes everything on by themselves; he or she assumes all responsibilities and wants to be seen as the savior; the hero per se of the story. Inevitably, hero leaders fail, because nobody regardless of talent, intellect and energy level can do it all. No man or woman, as the saying goes is an island. Once the hero slips, we are quick to abandon them as yet another in a long line of people who failed to live up to their promises. So what happens? Well, invariably we look for a new and better hero and the cycle continues building cynicism every step of the way. We have all seen the hero phenomenon play out in our lives, whether it’s a hot shot CEO who is going to come in and turn it all around or a candidate who is going to get under the hood and by sheer force of will fix what everybody else has been unable to mend. It’s the story of American politics at every level of government. Which is why so many of us are disgusted right around this time of year as we recover from a barrage of expensive and slick campaign ads telling us how (fill in the blank) is
going to fight for the middle class and fix everything from crime and taxes to schools and health care. But this crop of heroes will fail. It’s inevitable. So are we relegated to an endless cycle of failure, frustration and phonies? Or is there a better way? Fortunately, there is a better and much more effective leadership style—that of the host, not the hero. The host is a collaborator, a motivator, a convener and an alchemist who brings people and resources together to tackle problems, meet challenges and seize opportunities. He or she doesn’t try to do it alone and does not pretend to have all the answers. Rather, they believe in the wisdom of the crowd and in hosting conversations and problem solving exercises that really and truly move the needle. I happen to think this is the best leadership approach possible. Not only does it involve people, but it challenges them to think and work together. And when they do come up with solutions , there is automatic buy-in because they were part of the process. They were engaged, someone bothered to ask them what they thought and trusted in their abilities to figure things out. Can this work on a local level? Absolutely, Delray Beach is a prime example of a community that re-invented itself through
visioning, and extensive and ongoing community engagement beginning with the Atlantic Avenue Task Force in the mid-80s, Visions 2000 in the late 80s and 90s and through the Citizen’s Downtown Master Planning Process in the 2000s. In fact, we get in trouble when we veer away from that formula either through failing to engage residents or having elected officials think they are heroes who can do it all, and let us know about it later. Can it work on the national level? Well, that’s a trickier beast to deal with. But perhaps it could… if presidents saw themselves (and more importantly) we viewed them as above partisanship and if somehow they could lead by “hosting” rather than dictating policies. But this only works if Congress can get over its hyper-partisanship and remember they are there to do a job and get things done for Americans; a simple concept that seems to be hopelessly lost at the moment. Regardless, next time you see a mayor beating his chest, or a gubernatorial candidate promising to save Florida remember the host and hero dynamic and ask yourself when the last time someone succeeded without being a host.
