It’s December, where did the year go?
lancing through back issues of Atlantic Ave Magazine we see that 2015 has been an interesting year. One could say that Delray Beach is the city that never sleeps. In this issue, we take a look back and a look ahead with highlights (and some lowlights) from 2015 with a look ahead to the New Year. We also offer our usual array of entertaining features and advice columns to make the most of living in America’s Most Fun and I would argue most vibrant and interesting small city. We also make a pitch to shop local this holiday season for gifts and services for friends, loved ones and co-workers. The holidays in Delray Beach are always special, with our own uniquely Delray Beach and uniquely Florida traditions. From pictures with Santa inside our 100 foot tree to the carousel at Old School Square and holiday music downtown, there is no better place to be for the holidays than our own downtown Delray Beach. This will be my 29th holiday season in Delray and I take pride in telling recent residents it wasn’t always this much fun. Back in the 80s, we would visit the National Enquirer tree in Lantana and travel to Miami or Fort Lauderdale for holiday festivities. These days, we have it all here at our fingertips. We should be thankful to all those who make our season special; from the DBMC and the DDA to the CRA and Old School Square and of course those who volunteer to build the tree and staff the events. Starting in the late 90s, I resolved to do the bulk of my holiday shopping locally. In those days, it was somewhat challenging but doable. These days, there is a wealth of options and it feels good to support the local businesses and see our dollars stay right here. During this holiday season, we also urge you to help those less fortunate. We have great wealth in our community but also great needs. There are a number of local efforts under way from food and toy drives to animal rescue initiatives. We ask that you kindly consider supporting these worthwhile efforts. When my kids were small and as they grew older too, we’d deliver turkeys on behalf of Kiwanis and later the Office Depot Foundation. It became a nice family tradition and a teachable moment as a father. On behalf of the staff of Atlantic Ave Magazine, we wish you a safe, happy and joyous holiday season. See you in 2016! Stanton believes that every child deserves to smile and wanted to help make that happen. Spodak Dental Group provided $60,000 in free dental care and the doctors and team members were able to ensure all children left with a healthy and clean smile. Supreme Lending Hosted an Educational Event at the Blue Art Gallery

government that went into effect October 3rd, 2015. While TRID is truly designed to make sure the customer is fully aware of the cost and monthly obligation associated with purchasing a home, the new disclosure requirements has the potential to have a large impact to consumer when in contract to purchase a home. If the lenders and realtors are not aware of the new disclosure requirements and the timeframes that need to be adhered too, it puts the buyers deposit money at risk. So today more than ever, the education for real estate professionals and mortgage loan officers is paramount. As a local lender here on Atlantic Avenue, we want to thank the Blue Art Gallery and other local Sponsors, for participating and supporting the event.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in December for $50 or less.
t’s the best time of the year and it’s finally here! December is Universal Human Rights Month and we all have the universal right to enjoy the holidays, which happen to be extra special in Delray. The highlight of the festivities is the 100 ft. Christmas Tree, which volunteers and city members have been erecting for the past several weeks. The tree lighting ceremony, scheduled for December 3, is the telltale sign that the holidays have begun so gather the family and friends because you don’t want to miss it. Throngs of people gather downtown to watch local performances, welcome Santa as he arrives via helicopter, enjoy kiddie train rides, ice skating and carousel rides, and the first illumination of the 15,000 LED lights of the holiday season. There’s always a line to get inside the tree to see the holiday scenery, but it is well worth it and a definite treat for the family! Santa will hang out after the tree lighting for photos so it’s a perfect way to kick start your holiday happiness and let him know exactly what you’d like for Christmas. The tree will be available for your viewing pleasure until January 1 so you have plenty of time to revisit and get your fix. The tree is located at Old School Square Park, 51 N. Swinton Ave (you can’t miss it) and festivities begin at 5 p.m. Visit www.100ftchristmastree.com or call (561) 278-0424 for more information.

so get in the festive mood because we’ve got some parties to attend. The 44th Annual Holiday Boat Parade is December 11 and is such a fun way to get in the mood for the holidays because all of the boats are decorated with lights, many are blasting holiday music, and you might even be lucky enough to see a Santa (or ten). The boats leave the Lantana Bridge around 7 p.m. and continue to the C-15 canal in Delray, so make sure you find a good seat somewhere between the
two so you can catch all the action. If you’re in the mood for more, plan to attend the Delray Beach Holiday Parade the following night. Starting at 6 p.m., the parade begins east of the Intracoastal and continues west to the Fire Department. There’s more than 70 entries in the parade and you are guaranteed to see Santa riding on a fire truck so you should definitely get your holiday fix. So gather the friends and break out the egg nog because you’ve got some holiday cheerin’ to do. Visit www.catchboynton.com and www. mydelraybeach.com for more information.
W
e all know that we get a ton of gifts that we don’t want or even need, so let’s change that. December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month and this is the perfect time to learn more about our beach. The Sandoway House Nature Center is hosting a Decoding Beach Curiosities event December 19 and you’re welcome to enjoy a beach adventure as you hunt and decode the mystery of the various critters that wash up on the shore. You will examine clams, snails, corals, plants and other creepy crawlies that find their way on the beach, and learn more about their similarities and differences. Tips will be given for better identification of treasures so you will become a beach animal whiz in no time. The event is $8 per person and begins at 9 a.m. so bring your bathing suit and hang out at the beach after, or head to the Nature Center because admission is included in the fee. This is the best gift for anyone and everyone because it’s the gift that keeps on giving, and it’s also a fun way to keep safe at the beach. The Sandoway House Nature Center is located at 142 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.sandowayhouse.org or call (561) 274-SAND for more information.

an you believe it? Because I can’t. We are days away from the end of the year and it seems like the time travels faster and faster every year. It’s About Time Week is December 25-31 and if you’re interested in redecorating your living space, work space or mind space for the New Year, it’s the perfect time to head to the Ninth Annual Downtown Delray Beach New Year’s Weekend Craft Festival. Grab a little sunshine, your sun hat, and peruse the endless vendors as you enjoy looking for everything you didn’t know you needed. This Festival is held along Fourth Avenue and is open for your enjoyment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, December 26 and 27, and there is no entrance fee, which is great. You can always tell when it’s season in Delray because there are art festivals almost every weekend, and I’m not angry about it. It’s always a better purchase when you know you’re buying something that someone made with their own two hands, and you can treat yourself to something special that you might not have gotten as a holiday present. Whatever your reason, it’s about time you hit the Festival streets! Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561) 746-6615 for more information.

y name is Nicole and I’m an intuitive counselor. I am a third generation of Clairvoyant’s. For over 25 years, I have helped my clients gain insight and guidance into their future. I have a new age boutique in Midtown, Miami and have clientele throughout the U.S. and internationally. But I fell in love with the community of Delray Beach and decided to open another location called Nicole’s New Age Boutique. My one boutique offers palmistry, tarot readings, handwriting analysis, Reiki healing, Chakra balancing, horoscope charts and past life regressions. My other location is a retail shop with items such as: quartz crystals, scented candles, tarot cards, incense, aromatherapy oils and bath salts, and spiritual healing guides. I have been hired to do readings at the Standard Hotel, on ESPN radio to predict the winners for the NFL, and have been voted Best Psychic by the New Times. My goal is not just to give my clients a one-time reading but to help them live a better and happier life.

y name is Michel Menna and I am the Chef/Owner of Il Contadino Ristorante. I have been in the restaurant business for over 35 years. I trained in Italy, Switzerland and France where I studied as a chef and also restaurant/hotel management. I always knew I would be in this business when I first started cooking at home at the age of 9, making fancy dishes for my parents and friends. After my European studies I returned home to the Boca/Delray area where I had grown up in the seventies. I worked at a local restaurant on the Ave that had a glass roof (anyone remember that one?) among quite a few others before opening my own restaurants, a produce business, a flower business and a catering and delivery company. As my children were born into the restaurant business I wanted to pass on and teach them the passion I have for great food. I have taught them many kitchen skills and now at the age of 6, my daughter is the official baker of our famous Il Contadino Key Lime Pie. Come and check it out along with lots of new items on the menu including fresh Florida stone crabs.

y name is Dina, and I am the Broker/ Owner of Deluxe Properties. I live in, work, and love Delray Beach. I grew up in Minnesota and vacationed in the area year after year as a child. I attended the University of Minnesota and then moved to Los Angeles where I worked in finance in the entertainment industry. Moving to Florida in 2003 to be near my parents in Boca Raton, I immediately obtained my real estate license and my broker’s license a year later. I never saw myself as a “Sales” person, so I made the decision to “cater” to my clients and treat them with what I coined, “the hospitality mentality” to real estate. The concept for which Deluxe Properties was born. We are a boutique brokerage with concierge client service attention. The tag line: “Upgrade from the Standard... to Deluxe” ...we make the home buying or selling experience as if you were planning a vacation. We like to remove the stress and treat our clients like guests. One of my passions is helping people and I find it a great accomplishment using this philosophy. My other passions include jewelry design, photography, travel and anything artistic. was raised in Boca Raton and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida State University. Shortly after college I worked as a patient advocate for durable medical equipment for 10 years. I developed an interest in conservative pain management and holistic therapy when my husband was in a severe car accident. During this time, I discovered that micro-current helped my husband get out of pain. He no longer required back surgery or pain medication. After my firsthand experience I began educating others on the benefits of microcurrent and served on the board of Educators for First Alternatives specializing in marketing and training classes for micro-current. I gained my Esthetician license and my husband Dale Severson and myself opened Mia’s Spa in Delray Beach. I continue to provide cutting edge treatments and received my medical certification in derma-needling known as collagen induction. My knowledge and extraordinary touch are enhanced by my ability to customize treatments to my client’s specific needs. I specialize in microcurrent face-lift, collagen induction, skin tag removal, scar revision, acne, and hyperpigmentation. home for the holidays Home is definitely where the heart is. It is a place for people to come home to unwind and relax after a long day at work, host fun-filled birthday parties, build holiday memories that will last a lifetime or just a safe haven for your loved ones. A house is a building with various rooms and many different components, but you have to add your own personal touch to make it truly your own home. Each person has their own unique taste in music, clothing, and food, but the best way to express yourself is through the place where you live. Whether you prefer an Old-Florida feel, a contemporary atmosphere, or an Anglo-Caribbean retreat, choosing the right General Contractor is the first step
in molding your house into a home. When selecting a general contractor you should share your desires and vision. Please contact us for a list of tips to help you select the right general contractor. A home is not the place for mass-produced, one-size-fits-all production; it must be unique and fit the homeowner’s taste. Now is the best time to make your house the home of your dreams. Stuart & Shelby is proud to have helped many families in Delray Beach and surrounding areas turn their houses (and even condominiums) into homes. If you are considering building a home, or remodeling your current home, please give us a call or see what your neighbors
are saying at www.stuartandshelby.com/ testimonials. During this holiday season, we hope that you build upon traditions and enjoy the many exciting events that our incredible community has to offer. From our families to yours, Happy Holidays!

City Coalition Launches Regional Survey To Create Distinct Marketing Identity For Key Delray Beach Corridor
A coalition of city representatives is leading a new research effort to identify audiences to which to market the gateway entrance of downtown Delray Beach as a place to live, work and play. Results of the research will be used to build a brand that accurately defines the appeal of the West Atlantic Avenue district. The West Atlantic Redevelopment Coalition (WARC) is launching an online survey that will invite participants to share what they find desirable in a local destination and how they perceive the West Atlantic Avenue neighborhood. The West Atlantic Avenue neighborhood is the area adjacent to Atlantic Avenue between the I-95 interchange and Swinton Avenue. The research is part of a larger West Atlantic Branding Initiative, started earlier this year by WARC, to market
this district of the City, promote the corridor’s unique history and offerings, and to capitalize on the sustained growth and vibrancy of Delray Beach. With the results of the market research, WARC plans to create a distinct and memorable brand identity and use it to draw visitors, businesses and residents to the area. The online survey will launched on November 10, and participants will be invited to share their opinions via http://www.delraywarc. The survey, which is open to everyone, will take about 7 minutes to complete.

H
ow appropriate we have a movie called “Christmas Eve” in limited release leading off the month of December, 2015. On the other hand we have the horror film “Krampus” and on Christmas Day itself the Quentin Tarantino bloodbath “The Hateful Eight.” Season’s Greetings! December 4 Will “Krampus” be as yucky as its title? You better watch out, because this thriller, “based on an ancient legend,” gets going when disillusioned young Max (Emjay Anthony) turns his back on Christmas and his family, and unleashes the evil force of the title, bent on punishing non-believers. Adam Scott, Toni Collette and David Koechner are featured, under the direction of Michael Dougherty (“X-Men 3”). “The Lady in the Van” inspired praise at Toronto International Film Festival, and why not? It stars esteemed British actress Maggie Smith as Miss Shepherd, a homeless lady who spends 15 years in a decrepit van parked in the driveway of a sympathetic man. Jim Broadbent, James Corden and Dominic Cooper co-star. Director Nicholas Hynter previously collaborated with writer Alan Bennett on “The History Boys.”
Tina Fey “Sisters”
December 11 And now for the rest of the story. Nathaniel Philbrick won a National Book Award for his account of the real-life disaster of the whaling ship Essex off New England in 1820. A monster whale attacked the vessel in an incident that would inspire Herman Melville to write “Moby-Dick.” Director Ron Howard dramatizes what happened to the crew after the whale’s havoc. The cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw. December 18 Will this re-awaken the series? “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the first in a planned trilogy that takes place 30 years after “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.” Some of the original Star Wars cast will return for cameos, including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. Also returning are the lovable androids R2-D2 and C3PO. JJ Abrams directs this Disney production, written by Lawrence Kasdan. Younger cast members are Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o. Composer John Williams returns with a new score. If it has Tina Fey in it, it will probably be good. “Sisters” stars Fey and Amy Poehler as alienated sisters who go to their parents’ home to clean it out in advance of a sale. James Brolin, Madison Davinport and John Cena co-star. Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect”) directs a script by Paula Bell. December 23 Alvin and the Chipmunks just never grow old. The veteran squeaky-voiced animated characters return with “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.” Justin Long is the new voice of Alvin, with Matthew Gray Gubler as Simon and Jesse McCartney as Theodore. Others are Bella Thorne, Jason Lee and Kimberly Williams under the direction of writer Walter Becker. Is “The Big Short” an Oxymoron? No, it’s a new film based on Michael Lewis’ best-selling book on banking, “The Big Short: Inside the
Doomsday Machine.” Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell think they can make a killing beating big banks at their own game. Adam McKay (“Anchorman 2,” “Step Brothers”) directs and co-wrote the script. Melissa Leo and Marisa Tomei co-star. December 25 If the title “Point Break” sounds familiar you may remember the 1991 original that starred the late Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. This Ericson Core remake stars Luke Bracey as FBI Agent Johnny Utah and Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi, leader of a band of extreme athletes who may be pulling off incredible crimes. Warner Brothers promises some of the most thrilling extreme sports action ever on the big screen, including big-wave surfing, wingsuit flying, sheer-face snowboarding, free rock climbing and high-speed motorcycle racing on four continents. “Daddy’s Home,” and that could spell trouble. Will Ferrell stars as a step-dad to two children who feels pressure when the kids’ divorced real dad (Mark Wahlberg) comes to visit and tries to regain his children’s respect and affection. Linda Cardinelli, Thomas Haden Church and Paul Scheer co-star. Sean Anders (“Horrible Bosses 2”) directs. “Joy” is “based on a true story,” with Jennifer Lawrence as the fictional Joy Mangano, a woman who founds a business dynasty that endures through four generations despite betrayal, treachery and loss of innocence. David O. Russell (“American Hustle”) directs a cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Rohm and Virginia Madsen. The script is by Annie Mumolo (“Bridesmaids”). Ouch! “Concussion” tells the true story of Dr. Bennett Omalu (Will Smith), a neuropathologist who discovered the football-related brain trauma syndrome called CTE. As with all breakthroughs, the good doctor faced opposition from both the sports and medical establishment. Albert Brooks, Alec Baldwin, Gugu MbathaRaw and Stephen Moyer. Director Peter Landesman adapted the script from the October, 2009 GQ article “Game Brain” by Jeanne Marie Laskas.

and the harrowing Coast Guard rescue when four men in a tiny lifeboat overcame insurmountable odds and saved more than 30 stranded sailors. Soon to be a major motion picture! On the night of February 18, 1952, during one of the worst winter storms that New England has ever seen, two oil tankers just off the shore of Cape Cod were torn in half. With the storm in full force and waves up to 70 feet high, four coast guardsmen headed out to sea in a tiny lifeboat to come to the rescue. They were the only hope for the stranded sailors. Despite incredible obstacles, these brave men risked their lives, remembering the unofficial Coast Guard motto: You have to go out, but you do not have to come back. This is a fast-paced, uplifting story that puts young readers in the middle of the action. It’s a gripping true tale of heroism and survival in the face of the elements.

Fat Dad, Fat Kid: One Father and Son’s Journey to Take Power Away from the “F-Word”
by Shay Butler, Gavin Butler Available December 29, 2015 In today’s world where fast-food restaurants, soda, and processed foods reign supreme, does “fat dad” have to mean “fat kid”? Digital entrepreneur and beloved vlogger Shay Butler and his preteen son, Gavin, decided to find out the answer for themselves. Before he turned thirty, Shay was nearly 300 pounds. Adopting the attitude that every action, no matter how small, was better than what he was doing before, Shay lost more than 100 pounds and ran four marathons, becoming a source of inspiration for everyone who followed his journey on his ShayLoss channel on YouTube. At the age of thirty-five, Shay discovered that “maintaining” is the hard part. He also saw how some of his habits were affecting his children, particularly his eldest son, Gavin. Determined to get back into shape and inspire his son along the way, Shay asked Gavin to embark on a thirty-day challenge with him to eat clean and do thirty minutes of exercise a day. Full of Shay’s signature blend of humor, honesty, and unbridled enthusiasm, Fat Dad, Fat Kid chronicles the ups and downs of Shay and Gavin’s thirty days together, reflects on Shay’s lifelong struggle with health and fitness, and proves that it’s never too late for parents or children to embrace a healthier lifestyle—even when it doesn’t come easy.

Palm Beach Swim Week is the brainchild of Lilyana Eisele, CEO of Fusion Fashion & Art Productions. For this inaugural Swim Week event, Eisele teamed with Fatima NeJame, co-founder of Palm Beach Photographic Centre. “It was an amazing success,” declared Fatima, who founded Palm Beach Photographic with her Husband Art 25 years ago. “The house was packed every night. There was a constant flow of people. This is good for all of downtown West Palm Beach. We have become a destination.” Lilyana Eisele plans to host a Fashion Week in March at venues to be announced. Fatima NeJame would like to work with her again. “We could not host Fashion Week because that is our peak time, but this time was perfect,” she said. “We would be happy to do this again.”

travel ║ Perth, australia
By Lisa Marie
Delights “Down Under” I know it’s a long way to travel but Perth, Australia is a fabulous place to visit. Let’s face it; Australia REALLY is on the other side of the world! Travelling times vary but the quickest you will get there is around 30 hours. However, you could break up the travel time by stopping off at various destinations on route.
Quantas Airline (one of Australia’s leading carriers) offers flights from Miami, stopping in Los Angeles, and again in Sydney, Australia before the last leg of the journey into Perth. So why not take the opportunity to stroll down Rodeo Drive or visit Mickey at Disney Land? On your next stop take a trip to visit the famous Sydney Opera House. www. qantas.com.au/US. Once in Perth you will be met by a picture - postcard city. Situated on the banks of the Swan River, it is a perfect setting. In summer (Sept - end February) the weather is fantastic, with temperatures around 86 degrees and with over 50 miles of clean, white sandy beaches, Perth’s coastline is ideal for swimming and surfing. The city offers free buses to get you around , where you can visit the Perth Mint, Swan Bells Tower, Art Gallery of WA and many more Perth tourist attractions. For some spectacular panoramic views of Perth and the river, a visit to Kings Park and Botanic gardens is a must! Take full advantage of the many lookout points available to the public or try the treetop walk for a unique view of the city or just enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of the many recreation areas of the park. Visit King Street for some up-market retail therapy, packed with boutiques, art galleries, eateries and beautiful people; it’s the place to be seen! Just 10 minutes north of the city is Scarbor-

ough Beach where you can fish, swim, surf, skate and windsurf. If you travel another 10 minutes north you will find Hillary’s Marina. A recreation boating harbor with restaurants; bars, shops, galleries and tourist attractions set on walk ways over the Indian Ocean. From here you can take a 45 minute ferry to Rottnest Island where you can experience some fantastic diving and snorkeling amongst the coral reefs; hidden bays and deserted cycle paths waiting to be explored. The small marsupial quokka, a bit like a small Kangaroo, only exists on this island, and in some parts they have become very tame. Alternatively if you head south from Perth you will come to Fremantle. Fremantle is recognized as the best preserved 19th Century seaport in the world! Over 150 buildings in the port city are classified by the National Trust. These include: The Round House which was built in 1831 and is the oldest public building in W.A., The Esplanade Hotel which was built in 1890s and the Fremantle Prison which was built by convict labor in the 1850s. You can also get a ferry to Rottnest Island from here. Still heading south you come across the town of Rockingham. Here there are water sports of all kinds, ocean cruises, camping, sailing, dolphin encounters, swimming, crabbing, museums, penguin and seal tours, wine tasting, theaters, golfing…plus much more. Again traveling south you reach Mandurah
where the heart of the city is arranged around an estuary, crisscrossed by pleasure boats and pontoon barges, and is alive with cafes and restaurants dotted along the boardwalks. Follow the meandering waterways out into the Peel Region, and restaurants, wineries, historical sites and many other attractions bring still more variety and fresh surprises to your Mandurah visit. We spotted some spectacular homes on the water and it reminded me of our very own Intracoastal. BUT of course no trip to Western Australia would be complete without a visit into the ‘bush’. One of WA most popular places is Kalbarri National Park, a seven hour drive from Perth or you can fly there in about 2 hours. Located on WA’s mid north coast, Kalbarri National Park is known for its spectacular scenery and red rock gorges that were cut from the landscape by the mighty Murchison River. It offers a range of adventure activities like bush walking, gorge hiking and canoeing. The park is rich in bird life and other animals. Most native mammals are nocturnal but you can sometimes see western grey kangaroos and emus during the day. The park also takes in amazing coastal cliffs and gorges including Red Bluff and Pot Alley. Visit www.kalbarri.org.au for more information. I hope this has given you a taste of what Western Australia has to offer.

Shockingly, 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from neck and low back pain sometime during their life, with facet syndrome accounting for a large percentage of these symptoms. A recent study on low back pain showed involvement of one or more facet joints in 79% of the patients.
Many individuals with facet syndrome will often notice low back stiffness that becomes worse when sitting for long periods of time or when they first wake up in the morning and begin to move. They also may have trouble turning their head side to side or at times need to turn their entire upper body because it is too painful. Even bending forwards and backwards or walking upright can be very difficult. Facet syndrome can present itself as well-localized, dull or burning pain in the neck and low back, but that is not always the case. Lumbar facet syndrome can radiate into the buttock region, pelvis or thighs rarely traveling below the knee, while cervical facet syndrome can produce pain in the shoulder, arms, mid back and can also cause severe headaches. Most often individuals will blame their stiffness and pain on such things as their mattress, pillow or stress. They may even think that it is “normal” to feel this way. Articular facets are bony projections on the superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portion on the backside of the vertebras of the spinal column. These areas interlock with each other making up the zygapophyseal joint or “z-joint” which promote spinal support and are the key components to insure proper spinal motion. Like any other joint within the body, these areas experience constant repetitive movements where they interlock and become susceptible to injury and other degenerative conditions. Conditions such as Arthritis, Overuse Syndrome and Stereotypic Movement Disorders are some of the most common.
60 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Facet joints are incased in a synovial capsule which supplies proper nutrients to the joint and provides the “meniscoid” structure with lubrication needed to insure smooth gliding over one another, much like the meniscus in our knees. These joints are in constant motion throughout our life and can become worn and traumatized. As these joints become worn, they no longer provide the proper lubrication they need and can become inflamed and irritated, leading to Facet Joint Osteoarthritis in the future. Bony pro-
jections begin to form within the joint causing it to become hypertrophied (enlarged) and inflamed, limiting an individual’s range of motion and producing pain. The main focus when treating any facet syndrome is to restore proper motion and function to the joint along with decreasing pain and inflammation. Conservative treatment options should be the first choice for an individual suffering from this condition. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is one of the best ways to restore that lost mobility in the spinal column. Non-surgical spinal decompression and flexion-distraction can be a gentle and painless way to decompress the facet joints and aid in stretching tight musculature in the neck and low back. In addition, applying class IV cold laser therapy to the involved area will enhance the metabolism of local cells, increasing blood flow, reducing pain and swelling thus speeding up the healing time. “Re-training” or “firing” specific areas of the brain by way of neurophysiologic exercises can increase tone within the muscles of the spine to improve stability. Lastly, ergonomic changes, mobilization therapy, and properly prescribed stretch/strengthening exercises will help ensure any recurring episodes. Are your hands giving away your true age?
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
Second only to the face, our hands are the most regularly visible portion of the body. Yet we often forget to care for our hands. When we look around the bathroom we probably find cleansers, toners, facial moisturizers, and products for the neck and décolletage.
Many invest substantial time and money into the face, with either surgery, BotoxTM, fillers, cosmetic creams and serums. Sometimes a discrepancy develops between the age of the face and the age of the hands. Our hands are an integral part of our being. We use them for everything including our speech. What are your hands saying? Surprisingly, hands can be a dead giveaway to real age. Until a few years ago, those hoping to disguise the true age of hands had limited options. High-end manicures and distracting jewelry were used in an attempt to focus on more youthful hands. But today, several new hand rejuvenation techniques offer the cosmetically conscious a chance to turn back “the hands” of time. Because our hands are always exposed to sun (ultraviolet light), they are one of the first places to start showing visible signs of aging. The skin begins to thin out and darkened spots (a.k.a. “age spots”) appear, seeming to gradually increase in number over time. A loss of fatty tissue also occurs, making hands appear skeletonized. The veins and tendons become prominent and BEFORE

the hand anatomy appears more visible and draped with environmentally damaged skin. Hand rejuvenation means restoring the youthful appearance back to the hands. This is accomplished by restoring volume, removing age spots, and firming up the skin. The most effective treatments include volume restoration and laser skin rejuvenation procedures. One treatment can suffice or a combination of techniques can be blended to achieve the look that patient’s desire. With short bursts of laser light age spots can gently be removed. Laser treatments are quick and painless. Spot treatment can be used with or without plumping up the volume. Hand volume can be pumped up with injectable fillers (PerlaneTM, JuvedermTM and RadiesseTM) or, one’s own fat can be relocated from another part of the body, such as from the abdomen or thighs into the hands. Hand rejuvenation can be achieved in as little as 20 minutes, with virtually no discomfort. We are always encouraged to put our best foot forward, but I believe the wise patient will transfer that idea to their much more visible hand. after

Think Before You Drink!
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
Heavy alcohol consumption is the second largest risk factor for the development of oral cancer, so drink smart to keep your healthy smile.
OVERVIEW The holidays are synonymous with food, friends, family, and parties galore. While this holiday season is a great time to connect with those around you in a fun environment, the majority of us can safely say that we tend to indulge in the bubbly a little too often and a little too much. With the New Year on our minds, this is the time to refocus our energy on our health, and more specifically, our oral health. Heavy, and even moderate, alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, including the pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box) and esophagus. Additionally, the risk of developing cancer increases with the amount of alcohol a person consumes. Alcohol is the common term for ethanol or ethyl alcohol, which is a chemical substance found in beer, wine and liquor, as well as some medicines and mouthwashes. The federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 defines moderate and heavy alcohol consumption as one drink or three drinks per day for women and two drinks or four drinks per day for men, respectively. Alcohol abuse, defined as more than 21 drinks in one week, is the second largest risk factor for the development of oral cancer, second only to tobacco. Moreover, there is an especially high risk when alcohol is combined with tobacco use, as scientists believe that these substances synergistically interact, increasing each other’s harmful effects. ALCOHOL’S EFFECTS Researchers have identified multiple ways that alcohol increases the risk of cancer. The dehydrating effect of alcohol on cell walls enhances the ability of tobacco carcinogens to permeate the mouth tis-

sues. Also, when the body metabolizes the ethanol in alcoholic drinks, it becomes acetaldehyde, which is a toxic chemical that can damage both DNA (the genetic material that makes up genes) and proteins. Heavy drinking also impairs the body’s ability to break down and absorb a variety of nutrients, including vitamins A, C, D and E, folate and carotenoids, lowering the body’s natural ability to use antioxidants to prevent the formation of cancers. DIAGNOSIS AND REVERSAL Symptoms of oral cancer include a sore or lesion in the mouth that doesn’t heal, difficulty chewing or swallowing, numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth, difficulty moving the jaw or tongue, and chronic hoarseness, among others.
It is widely accepted by scientists that eliminating the use of tobacco and reducing or eliminating your intake of alcohol will immediately begin to reduce your risk of developing oral cancer. For example, pharynx and esophageal cancer were found to decrease about 10 to 15 years after a person stops drinking alcohol, and approached a cancer risk level similar to that of non-drinkers/non-smokers. So before you drink, think, and remember that water is your friend. Your oral cavity will thank you, and you’ll have a healthy smile as you embrace 2016! Holiday Fitness Hacks
Plus Four Reasons Why You Are Not Seeing Results At The Gym
{
By Carolina Romero
My love affair with fitness began many years ago, and even though we are at a happy place today, you can bet that wasn’t always the case.
For years, regardless of how hard I worked out, I never saw the results I wanted. I knew I wasn’t alone. In fact, this is the number one complaint I hear from gym-goers everywhere. Follow the next four tips and save yourself the time and frustration that comes from working out with no results; especially during the holiday season when we are all pressed for time but desperately need the stress relief of an effective workout. 1. MORE IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER As a fitness junkie, I am familiar with the endorphin high that comes after successfully completing a hard workout. This feeling pushed me to do longer and harder workouts, but to my surprise, I was still seeing no results. In fitness, rest and recovery is just as important as hard work. While we rest, our bodies repair themselves, our muscles grow, our metabolism increases, and we become stronger. Adding more workload to an already tired body is going to do more harm than good. Take adequate rest and remember quality beats quantity at the gym. 2. CARDIO ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH Cardiovascular training has many benefits, but it must be complemented with a sound strength training routine. To build an attractive and healthy body we must work on building muscle. Cardiovascular exercise burns more calo-
66 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
ries on the spot, but building muscle will increase your metabolic rate in the long run allowing you to eat more without gaining any weight! This is an invaluable tip while keeping healthy eating practices in check as you attend holiday events. For the ladies concerned that weight training will make them look manly, don’t worry! As females we do not have enough testosterone to become overly muscular. The right type of strength training will help us build the tight and toned bodies we want!
3. DO LESS PUSHUPS AND MORE PULLUPS Want an instant body transformation? Stand straight and pull your shoulders back. You will look instantly slimmer and more elegant. Posture is the most underrated look-changer and many of us hunch over our computers and cell phones too much to notice how bad our postures actually are. “Push” exercises such as pushups and bench press will tighten our chest muscles and make the problem worse. Instead, try adding “pull” exercises such as rows and pullups that will strengthen your back muscles and will open up your chest into a better posture. 4. YOU CAN’T OUT EXERCISE BAD DIET It will take an average person about 2 minutes to eat a Big Mac and it will take that same person about 45 minutes of running to burn those calories. It’s no secret that it’s easier to eat calories than it is to burn them, but regardless of how hard you workout, if you are not watching your nutrition you will see little to no results. If you are trying to lose fat, you need to eat less calories than you spend and that will be almost impossible without your active effort to eat healthy low calorie meals.

But her leap was not in vain. The former retail executive and designer knew her stuff but the question was, could she take her passion for fashion and translate it into a language that Delray Beach could understand? The answer is an unequivocal yes. “We are catering to the Bohemian chic lifestyle that is inherent in the Florida way of life. We’ve been open for seven months and our strategy is the same. We’ve been lucky, business is good. Regulars come from as far away as Miami and Palm Beach to shop here,” said the New Jersey native. The store, appropriately named Margaux Riviera, has roots that are purely American, yet with an international flair. Many of the sheer tunic tops with embroidery and majestic beading could easily be worn on the Avenue, but also on the Cote D’Azur. There are layering tunics with fringe, tas-

sels and uneven hemlines and color abounds in geometrics or tonal solids. The key to the success of this upbeat eclectic store is that it’s a magical playground of color and texture. And that’s what Doerrer had in mind all along. “Because of the heat we dress differently in South Florida than up North. I sell casual chic resort wear and clothing that can go from day to dinner. The lifestyle is more casual here and its warm most of the time, so we have to dress for that element. You can wear most of our outfits or dresses to brunch, the beach and out for the evening. As a matter of fact Doerrer and her crew, that includes her sister-in-law Debbie and Cousin Alice, work hard to make customers feel welcome and act as personal shoppers. “In addition to working with our local cli-
Accessories for the home from Indonesia, France, England and local artisans
ents we send our out-of-town customer’s photos of our new things and act as personal shoppers or stylists. We also stay in touch through social medial.” Doerrer is also “super excited” about their new online venture. This new addition is an online shopping center known as Shoptique. Margaux Riviera will have an online ecommerce shop that mirrors their brick and mortar presence in Delray. The Margaux Riviera message is that fashion can be fun, not repetitive. It’s a far cry from the local malls that replicate designers and styles as if they were a kitchen utensil. That’s why embroidered shorts hang alongside a long white sheer skirt with snap front and open slit. Lightweight ponchos (for the cooler times ahead) have fringe and come in tonal colors that are seamless yet interesting. There’s a sequin dress in a tribal print hanging next to flowing printed pants. That’s the beauty of shopping at a boutique that understands the inherent need of its customers to gather the ethereal and mix it with the real. That means taking a fashion walk on the wild side without tipping the scale of traditional boundaries. “We are a multi-generational store catering to daughters, mothers and grandmothers. There are fashionable woman of all ages. It’s not always about being super sexy although we have that too; it’s about addressing your personal lifestyle and needs.” That reality factor rings loud in Doerrer’s ears. That’s why she carries stretch jeans with a soft hand in tan, gray, blue, green and a brick. There are also belts in varying widths with belt buckles that answer the call of the wild (horses, cougars and snakes) and necklaces that can fringe their way into your heart. The accessories at Margaux Riviera are spectacular yet subtle. They dangle long on the torso with fringe, tassels or beaded detail, while others come with semi-precious stones that stake their claim on your bodice. With this kaleidoscope of color and style comes a following that appreciates fine clothing with a casual element. “We have some people who come here once a week to see what’s new so we have to keep it fresh. My dream was to have a boutique like this, and I am lucky to have incorporated all my previous work experience with great retail and wholesale companies.” Margaux Riviera carries clothing that is unique to South Florida - which is the mystery and the mystique of this wonderful shop. “I love to help women find special things to make them feel beautiful. It’s not about age or style, it’s about feeling good about yourself. That is our goal – to make everyone feel like the star of their own show.”

The name Premier Estate Properties conjures up images of luxury real estate, excellent customer service, and super-star realtors.
Pascal ‘Pat’ Liguori has been at the Delray Beach Premier Estate Properties office for the past16 years, and his years of experience make him the ‘go to’ real estate pro. Pascal’s father Alfonso Liguori was in real estate and his brothers (Joseph and Gerard) and sister (Laura) work in their Boca Raton office. Since success comes in threes – the time has come for the third generation of Liguori’s to enter the sterling gates of Premier Estate Properties in Delray Beach. That’s a lot for any young professional to live up to, but Antonio is up to the task. He grew up in the real estate business. It’s quite literally in his blood. Antonio majored in real estate at University of Central Florida and sold over $1.4 million as a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty Advantage III in

Orlando. He also spent summers interning at Seaside Builders. While studying real estate, Antonio immersed himself in real estate appraisal, real estate law, investment analysis, marketing, real estate development, residential financing and professional selling. While at UCF Antonio became president of the UCF Men’s Lacrosse program. At the time the team had no financial assets and needed a minimum of $50,000 to fund a lacrosse season. “After countless hours modifying the teams budget, creating robust fundraising campaigns and numerous volunteer events in the community. The team did not just scrape by, it flourished.” When Antonio left the team he had helped raise over $120,000 for the program. “I was very dedicated to my teammates, coaches and the program,” he said. As an intern at Seaside Builders, Antonio worked on high-end luxury home construction projects and took part in the administrative processes of local projects. “This construction internship experience instilled the importance of precision, detail, and the importance of quality materials in high-end homes. Additionally, I held Open Houses and remained attuned to the level of perfection demanded of Seaside Builders’ projects.” When asked about Antonio, Seaside Builders President Tom Laudani had this to say: “We’re happy to see Antonio Liguori joining the family real estate business. I had the pleasure of having him as a summer intern for two years. He was a pleasure to work with, a valuable asset, and we wish him the best.” One thing everyone agrees upon is that Antonio is on the same page as his forefathers. But it seems he has had some help along the way. “My father has been my mentor and role model. Watching my dad’s achievements, I learned what it took for my father to be named one of the top 125 real estate professionals in the nation eight consecutive years by The Wall Street Journal. With unparalleled sales performance he has reached the $983 Million mark in total sales.” Premier Estate Properties does extensive marketing and advertising to its target luxury market. “We focus 100 percent of our attention, resources, marketing and advertising to cater to the needs of our clientele. We have exclusive affiliations with Christies International Real Estate, Leading Estates of the World and Luxury Portfolio.” said Pascal.
Pappy Pat gave Antonio in-depth knowledge and exposure to the Delray Beach market. “Growing up in Delray provided me with firsthand knowledge of the community and its unique neighborhoods. From the time I was a kid, my goal was to work in the real estate business so I got my license at the age of eighteen. Now my goal is to stay current and informed on every aspect of sales in the surrounding areas, and to provide the best possible service to my clients. My dad taught me that prompt follow-up on all inquiries is crucial to success. But he also said that, above all, always doing the right thing is the most important ingredient in maintaining a good reputation.” The Liguori family has always been known for their honesty, integrity, work ethic, and extensive knowledge of the business. “I believe that your reputation is everything. Clients have to trust you and you have to give them the good, the bad and always the truth. If you make a mistake you don’t try to cover it up,” says Pascal. According to Antonio’s family he has inherited this same attention to excellence in customer service and sales that his father has. Those who know Antonio see him as a chip off the old block. They say he is extremely knowledgeable, sensitive to the needs and privacy of his clients. He is committed to
bringing buyers and sellers together. “Antonio’s professionalism, trustworthiness and dedication made all of the difference in our recent home purchase. His quick response time and in-depth knowledge of Delray Beach and surrounding communities allowed us to find a home that was perfectly matched to our needs. Antonio put us at ease and helped streamline the home buying process. We highly recommend Antonio Liguori.” said Scott and Laura MacDonald. Antonio will carry on the Liguori tradition of continually working to stay on the cutting edge of technology available in the industry. “This is an educational component that Premier Estate Properties provides its agents monthly at company-wide meetings.” Not only is Antonio ready and able to stand alongside his accomplished father, but he has the same positive optimistic attitude, commitment to the organization, professionalism and high level of customer service. Then head over to PeterMark Salon in downtown Delray and have the experts fawn over your natural assets and bring out the crown charisma in your hair. This newly expanded salon is a mix of California cool with Delray sophistication. Their combined experience would put Hugh Hefner in the youthful category (135 years combined). “When we started out we had only eight employees and now we have over 25. The environment here is very positive and upbeat. We all have a passion for what we do,” said co-owner Peter DeRosa. There is certainly passion in the air at this newly expanded sparkling salon that

whispers beauty in your ear. The bright white minimalistic interior makes you feel like you’re at the epicenter of Hollywood. And in a way you are. “I go back and forth to LA and co-host Brandi Glanville’s podcast, ‘Brandi Glanville: Unfiltered,’ said co-owner Mark Hasche, who is currently working on a reality show with Glanville. Hasche, who is known for his precision in cutting and styling hair, is a wizard when it comes to making clients look their best. But it’s not just in LA that they work their magic. “I have clients say to me, ‘I thought I could only get a good haircut in New York City but after coming here I have finally found a place to get a high style professional hair experience.’” You also get a lot more, according to both Hasche and DeRosa. “We have fun

but we take our profession seriously. When someone comes here, we make sure the client is in sync with the stylist working on their hair. If I can’t meet their needs then one of our other artful stylists will be able to. We want our clients to feel 100% comfortable with the treatment they receive,” said DeRosa. PeterMark Salon is now a whopping 2,000-square-feet with a life size mirrored bull in the window, a disco ball hanging from the ceiling, Lucite chairs, white marble flooring and translucent lighting that is both professional and sexy. It’s a place where feeling good comes natural and looking good is a given. “Marisa has done my color for 12 years. I travel a great deal and never fail to get compliments on my hair color. Because of Marisa I have a sophisticated and natural look. I also get awesome cuts with Mark. I drive an hour for these guys and have flown in to see them when I lived out of the state. I highly recommend this salon,” said Alix of Stuart, Florida. Marisa Guglielmo has been with PeterMark for 13 years and is somewhat of a genius when it comes to coloring hair. She does corrective color and likes to give customers a natural look that doesn’t need excessive maintenance. “I am a master colorist and am able to create the right hair color to fit a person’s facial tone and eye color so their hair comes out flattering and beautiful. We welcome everyone here,” said Marisa. Both Peter and Mark have been doing hair for 20 years and showed a natural ability for the profession in their youth. That’s
why it’s not surprising that supermodels, celebrities and socialites seek them (and their staff) out to make their hair live up to its highest aspirations. “I met Peter when I was doing a photo shoot for a magazine. Now I fly here just to have Peter do my hair. He changes my look, recreates me and makes my hair beautiful. I worked with hairdressers all over the world and no one understands my hair the way Peter does. I let him do what he wants because he loves making women look beautiful,” said former supermodel and actress Jennifer Gimenez. Mark also has a muse who touts his talent. “Mark is an artist, a trusted friend and undoubtedly talented with it comes to hair. On top of that I never have to worry about

The product line was created with bio-mineral technology and crystals to give a natural healthy shine. They also have the coveted Oribe brand of hair care products. There’s something else exciting at PeterMark Salon -“Nappy Hour.” From 3 pm to closing every Friday you get a glass of champagne, a wash, blowout and style for only $25. “It’s the perfect place for people to come after the gym (or work) and have a great time while getting beautiful. What is SEO and 5 Reasons Local SEO is Important
{
You may have heard this term used around: SEO. It stands for Search Engine Optimization. One of the biggest search engines that took the internet by storm in 1998 was Google.
You might have even said the phrase ‘just Google it.’ With Google’s easy to use features and visually appealing site, it has quickly become extremely popular and now it’s the most used for search engines on the internet. So, this is where SEO comes into play. When you create a website, let’s say the website sells custom design coffee mugs, you naturally want your website to show up on the first page of Google when people
search the term ‘customized coffee mugs’. But… everyone else that makes and sells custom coffee mugs also wants the top spots on Google. So what do you do? The answer is SEO. SEO analyzes the website and finds ways that will improve the site’s search results by using keywords, search terms, and also other things like backlinks, which helps with the authority of the site.
1. Competition Every year, thousands of start-up businesses establish themselves as impressive new enterprises. This causes the search visibility of businesses to drop in a heavily company-congested area. So, how do companies get visibility from all the other companies in their area on search engines? Using local SEO techniques like optimizing content locally will allow business owners to seek more business in their local area. This makes local SEO important for businesses.
2. Local Businesses Google loves local businesses and has favoritism towards them. Over the years, Google has shown what appears to be obvious favoritism towards small, new, and exceptionally responsive companies. Google created an algorithm called “Pigeon Update” in July 2014 that provides more accurate and relevant local search results. This allows new business owners to break new ground with limited resources. Local SEO contributes immensely to improving online visibility. Lots of people are now

searching for services and products online. The more visible a company is online, the more business that company will get. 3. Individualized Search Results If you are searching on Google and are logged into your account, Google will create individualized search results from your location. When you are logged in, location will play a large role in your searches. The benefits of local SEO unfold further as Google becomes more sophisticated and predictive, and users begin requiring more individualized results than ever before.
4. Mobile Device Popularity The number of online searches on a mobile device drastically outnumbers the results from a desktop computer. This is why there are so many more ads on your cell phone or tablet search than a desktop computer, because more people are searching on mobile devices. This is why local searches and local SEO are important, because people are usually on the go when they search for something. Having local
SEO will help contribute to the on the go searching from users on their mobile devices.
5. Personalized and Interactive Experience One of the main benefits of local SEO is the highly personalized and collaborative relationship facilitated between business owners and search engine optimizers. Local SEO companies are but a phone call away – reachable, responsive, and directly invested. Local SEO companies come with a working knowledge of every in and out of local results. Local business owners should support other local business owners to help benefit the local economy.

The permanent makeup and skin care services offered at Changing Faces Makeup has helped women of all ages from 25 all the way to 90 years old. Permanent Makeup demand has grown rapidly from the young to the more mature for those who desire a soft, natural enhancement to their appearance. It is especially valuable to people who can’t wear traditional cosmetics due to allergies and skin sensitivities; active people who want to look their best for sports activities such as swimming, hiking, biking, tennis, aerobics; and those who don’t want to worry about “sweating off” or reapplying cosmetics. Permanent Makeup also benefits the vision challenged who have difficulty applying their cosmetics; and others with dexterity related conditions such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke survivors, and
busy people who don’t have time to spend applying and refreshing makeup throughout the day and evening. Cancer patients who have lost their hair can benefit from the permanent makeup. “Permanent makeup has Natural Hairstroke Eyebrows lots of benefits and can last anywhere from two to five years. I use only the highest quality products including a digital machine and top of the line topicals. I take pride in having a clean and sanitized office,” said Vacanti. Formerly working as an Optician, Vacanti went back to school after her children’s father passed away from cancer. She has been in the field since 1997, when she established Changing Faces makeup. She takes the time to meet with each of her clients and individualizes a treatment that’s geared just for their needs. “My drive was to make a better living for them. When I did work as an optician, I saw a lot of bad permanent makeup work and I wanted to perfect it,” added Vacanti. Besides continuously taking classes to perfect her trade, Vacanti has taught beginners classes for people getting into the field and now teaches advanced techniques for advance technicians at Changing Faces Makeup. In addition, she performs permanent makeup procedures for top professionals in the industry. She’s literally the “Permanent Makeup Artist to the Permanent Makeup Artists” and specializes in women who have had facelift and eyelid surgery. She is also an active member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals. “What I find especially rewarding is when people come in who can’t see well or had cancer or a condition and I am giving them back those eyebrows that frame the face. I am giving them their face back, and it’s a very rewarding field in many ways. My clients look younger after they have permanent makeup,” said Vacanti, adding, “Delray Beach is a great central location because I have clients from as South as Miami and Fort Lauderdale and all the way up. Many of my clients are visiting the area as well and some are staying nearby at the Hyatt Place. Since Changing Faces Makeup is located so close to Atlantic Avenue, many clients make a day out of it and have lunch or another beauty service.” Her clients praise Vacanti and Changing Faces Makeup for making a positive difference in their lives. “I cannot live without my permanent eyeliner. VALIDATE ONLINE DATING Honesty Is The Best Policy By diane feen
{
photos by melissa korman
Finding a mate online has become one of the most popular ways of meeting your match, the experts say.
Not just for a casual date, but for a lifelong commitment. That’s why it’s so important to know who’s on the other side of the computer screen when you meet your potential Mr. or Ms. Right. Todd Moss and Bob Birdsong knew this all too well. Moss’s sister was newly divorced when she entered the foray of online dating. Because she was new to dating (and online resources) she asked her private investigator brother to do background checks on her potential online suitors. The results were astounding. “I did background checks on the men that my sister and her friends were plan-

ried,” said Moss, co-founder of the new online dating service ValiDATE. This false alarm – so to speak – was the impetus for Moss to come up with a new way of online dating that guarantees that blind dates don’t have to be such a mystery. To guarantee un-anonymity in the online dating arena Moss contacted his friend Bob Birdsong, a local Florida businessman and philanthropist. Together they formed what is now called ValiDATE. This online dating service makes sure that everyone is “who they say they are” because all members are thoroughly vetted by way of IP tracking software that does a background check on all members. “Our goal is to make online dating as safe as it can possibly be,” said ValiDATE CoFounder Birdsong. “It’s our priority to provide maximum security measures for our members and create a safe environment for people to meet.” Birdsong had his own dilemma with online dating, which was one of the reasons he was so eager to join up with Moss to create ValiDATE. When he was single Birdsong
Todd Moss and Bob Birdsong, co-founders of ValiDATE
did what many other single men do – he turned to an online dating site to meet his match. He started dating what seemed like a nice woman – until she wasn’t. “I was dating a woman I met online. She seemed nice, but after a few months I broke off the relationship. That’s when she starting stalking me, showing up at my office and my home. I had to pay a private investigator and an attorney to get rid of her, and only then did I find out she had a criminal record. If I had known that I would never have entered into a relationship with her,” said Birdsong. Many people who go online to meet their dream partner don’t realize that the person on the other side of the screen can be using a fake name, someone else’s picture or have a criminal record. If you ask Moss he’ll tell you that it is a common theme for men to be married, older than their profile says or have a criminal record. That, he said, can have deadly consequences for one segment of the population. “For single parents who start dating it is important that they meet someone who has good intentions and a clean record. We work with Child Rescue Coalition to make sure that our members are not pedophiles. Some men go online for dating services so they can gain access to the woman’s chil-
dren. If you’re a single parent, our dating site is a no-brainer,” said Moss, who wants people to know that ValiDATE is the only non-law enforcement agency with access to the Child Rescue Coalition database. ValiDATE is for all ages, religions and lifestyles. “It doesn’t matter if you’re straight or gay we are here to protect an honest person so they can go out with other honest people. We are providing a service that’s more than a dating service. Think of the peace of mind you’ll have going on a first date knowing the person you’re meeting is who they say they are,” said Birdsong. Though online dating sites have become enormously popular, no one talks about the potential downside of this mode of finding your cupid. “Women have been raped by men they met online and others might be career criminals. I know someone who had their picture copied and used on a dating service by someone else. Those people can’t join our online dating service because they can’t hide their record,” said Moss. ValiDATE requires background checks every six months to make sure members are qualified and honest. They verify background, age, location and make sure there is no illicit web activity.
Only validated members are able to see profiles and connect with like-minded individuals with similar interests. Members always know exactly who they are meeting – professionals with clean backgrounds with nothing to hide. “All of these measures increase ValiDATE’s level of security,” said Moss. “ValiDATE members can now meet datable matches online with the peace of mind that the person they’re connecting with is who they say they are. This is going to be the Gold Standard in the future. It’s important to know who you are letting into your home and your life.” Right now ValiDATE is only available to South Florida residents from Miami to Palm Beach County. But in the next year the site will be going nationwide. ValiDATE was started by three entrepreneurs with a combined 52 years of experience in the military, law enforcement and private investigation. Their only goal is to make online dating safer and more secure for everyone. As they like to say, “Why Tempt Fate, ValiDATE!” We agree. JASMIN BOUTIQUE By Diane Feen
Jasmin Boutique in Royal Palm Place
She knew it while she was a working as a South Florida businesswoman and she knows it now. The only difference is that now she can (and does) make a difference in women’s lives. She does this by being the chaperon of fine taste in downtown Boca. It is in her new shop that Jasmine has culled feminine dresses, workout clothing, sportswear and accessories that are ladylike yet elegant. “A woman dressed with confidence impacts the world,” she said. “When a woman dresses well she feels good and it does something to her confidence.” She has a point. Wearing clothing that makes you feel good is empowering and Otero has known that for a long time. Up until now she didn’t have the chance to channel her love of fashion into something bigger than herself. Now she can have an impact on everyone who comes into her shop. One person who is grateful for Otero’s presence is Jessica Alavi. “Jasmin Boutique has a great selection of prestigious brands. I love the private shopping experience without having to deal with boutique mark-ups. I found an elegant Ted Baker dress for a South Beach wedding the day before the event. Jasmine had eight dresses waiting for me upon arrival. I am very grateful - and will be a loyal customer at this store moving forward,” said Alavi. Not only is Otero the perfect muse for her store’s namesake, but she has designed the shop with her partner Brad Dutton. And, they’ve done a wonderful job of bring-

ing style to this homage of luxury. Dutton has been in the fabric business for many years and brings a wealth of knowledge to this retail venue. He’s also the perfect Southern gentleman. The shop features antiques that were passed down from Dutton’s family and are now a feature presentation in this new shop. An antique sewing machine sits near the wall and a 1920s mannequin is draped in lace and pearls. There’s also a wooden chair from a 19th century school house and a real butcher block table. But the star of this show is definitely the clothing and accessories. Ted Baker bags are perched on a shelf – some are pink patent with feminine bows and others are less subdued with red and black cherries.
There are knee length suede fringe skirts, black leatherette fitted pants and enough body hugging dresses to fill your closet and your social calendar. Otero is an arbiter of style and is ready to help others find their inner Audrey Hepburn. “A woman can accomplish more when she feels good about herself and how she looks. I want women to feel confident and beautiful. We focus on helping everyone look their best here,” said the Florida native. Otero refers to her shop as an upscale luxury boutique, but it’s a lot more. She carries luxe fine weave cotton shirts from Swedish clothier Stenströms, white chiffon zip front shirt-jackets and a knit halter dress with sheer bodice and slenderizing seams. They also have soft mini-cord jeans, black

pants with floral print trim, wide legged jeans and a halter romper with built-in bra and sash waist. There are dresses that sizzle and workout clothing that are hip and functional (with gold button trim). Many are made in the USA. Jasmin Boutique is adding fashionable children’s clothing in the store. “As a mother of three girls I know (and understand) the need to find that perfect outfit for your daughters for special events. I also have a little boy.” The location for Jasmin Boutique is perfect for its savvy countenance. Shopping With A Purpose
HY PA – HY MA By Diane Feen
Shop and Trolley Hop
But imagine that your shopping experience was also an act of philanthropy. Hy Pa – Hy Ma owner Nance Bernet made that happen last month when she participated in the Shop Hop Trolley Tour hosted by St. Vincent Ferrer. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for their school that turned 60-years-old. It worked this way – three trolleys were dispatched with ladies (and a few gents, including Frank McKinney) that were taken to local clothing boutiques to shop. The clothing store owner then donated a percentage of the profit to the Capital Campaign Fund for St. Vincent Ferrer School. The day started with a continental breakfast in the Kellaghan Hall (at the church) and then the morning began at 9:30. “Three trolleys pulled up at different times in front of the store and everyone shopped. It was so much fun. The women bought dresses, jewelry, pants and tops. It was wonderful to do something that was not only enjoyable, but was for a good cause,” said Hy Pa – Hy Ma owner Nance. Turns out that not only is Nance a member of St. Vincent Ferrer, but her grandchildren (12-year-old Andrew and 10-year-old Ellie) attend the school at St. Vincent Ferrer as well. Nance made sure the event was festive by serving wine and cheese and decorating the store with colorful balloons. “It’s great to do something positive while also contributing to the new school. creates good will and makes you feel good.” There are other reasons to feel good when at Hy Pa – Hy Ma. The main one is that the clothing is a world away from large retailers that stick to one designer and one style per season. Hy Pa – Hy Ma has an amazing black bolero sweater-jacket with faux fur trimming by Joseph Ribkoff and assorted novelty tunics that slenderize and glamorize the torso. That’s the beauty of shopping at this local boutique that has been a fixture in downtown Delray for 38 years. Nance takes elegance and femininity to the racks with clothing that fits all lifestyles and moods. “Women today are ageless; they want clothing that makes them feel youthful and beautiful. No matter what age they are women take Pilates classes, working outside the home and lead active lives. No one is old anymore – being old is passé.” Hy Pa – Hy Ma also has wonderful accessories that include leather belts with gold buckles and trim, colorful scarves, handShop and Sip for a worthy cause
bags and jewelry. There are elegant (and casual) dresses that camouflage flaws and maximize the feminine physique. They also have sophisticated tunics in stylish prints or solids with or without embellishment. Hy Pa – Hy Ma also participated in the runway fashion show at the Delray Beach Club on the same day as the Shop Hop Trolley Tour. Since both events used live models to highlight the clothing Nance’s daughter Mia walked the runway, as well as niece Betsy, daughter-in-law Beth, Joan and Wanda. Hy Pa – Hy Ma is a veritable treasure chest of fashion goodies for your body and your soul. It’s a feel good space with a boutique heritage that predates the age of androgyny and embraces the essence of femininity. Nance is also a supporter of the upcoming St. Vincent Ferrer Gala in January (its 75th birthday) and the three-day exuberant festival in March. HyPa HyMa 900 E. “Why Do They Keep Coming to this Doctor?…” (Who admits to curing no one)
Dear Friend, I’ve got to tell you something I’ve never said out loud. But, what I’m going to tell you makes so much sense that you’ll probably get mad that no one told you this before. I’ve been a doctor in this town for 3 years. And, to this day, I’ve never cured anyone. You may think the word would get around and no one would come to me anymore. The opposite is true. The more people who understand, the more people come to see me. Several times a day, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. And, we get terrific results! That’s why our office is filled with people who have found help nowhere else. Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine. The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!”
Resting in our relaxation room helps adjustments last longer. For the last 3 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with: • Headaches/Migraines • Fibromyalgia • Vertigo/Dizziness • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness In Limbs • Athletic Injuries to name a few… Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “Finally I found relief for the neck and shoulder pain I have been dealing with for about a year.” (Jarrod White, Delray Beach, FL) “This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) Here’s the most important thing I have to say. Your body is made to heal itself, and it does that best when it’s free of nerve interference. So, as much as I’d like the credit, I can’t take it. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. I analyze the nervous system and the spine and perform specific spinal adjustments to remove nerve pressure. The body responds, and often it heals itself once that nerve interference is removed.
Exciting Offer - Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problems, and not just cover them up with drugs. When you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (before December 31st, 2015) you’ll receive the entire exam for $27. That includes x-rays, paraspinal thermal imaging, postural analysis… and there’s no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this exam normally costs $170. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots available, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee! Our office is called Schrier Family Chiropractic and it is at 315 N.E 2nd Ave., (located in Pineapple Grove). Our phone number is 561-4452648. Call Pam or me today for an appointment. We can help. Thank you. -Elan Schrier, D.C. P.S. All people respond differently to care. We never promise a cure, but we do promise to do our best.

GULFSTREAM ROOFING By Diane Feen

Whether you know it or not, your roof is the heart and soul of your home. Though not a sexy subject, maintaining your roof is imperative to a healthy happy life. Sounds crazy, right?
Well it’s not. If you talk to Florida homeowners you will hear stories of water damage, mold, ant infestations and other maladies that originated from a leaking or faulty roof. The insidious part of resolving this problem is that it often lies in the abyss. Which is why homeowners don’t realize where the problem is until it has escalated to catastrophic proportion. And if you’ve ever lived (or rented) a

home in South Florida and noticed your air had a bad smell or you were inundated with ants, then chances are that your roof needs some TLC. One thing that most people don’t know is that a roof needs yearly maintenance just like most things of value. “A roof is as expensive as a car yet people know they have to change the oil in their cars. Well, a roof also needs proper maintenance,” said Matt Weindorfer, a 40-year veteran of the
roofing business at Gulfstream Roofing. One thing that is not discussed (or taught in school) is that proper roof maintenance is an important part of keeping your home safe and healthy. Not just for you, but for your children and loved ones. And nowhere is it more imperative than in South Florida where the heat and moisture can wreck havoc on your roof. According to Gulfstream roofing expert Chad Gleaton, the heat and cold expands parts

heavy rain storm. Look for wet spots in your home, check out window areas for water instruction and see if there are ants. For a flat deck roof (or low slope roof) it is important to have your roof inspected yearly and cleaned when necessary. If it is dirty (or has a dull look) that can cause more heat to enter your home. Gulfstream suggests having a good siliconbased coating to extend the life of the low sloped roof. If you’re a snowbird (and have been away) it’s a good thing to have your roof inspected to see if the gutters are clogged, tiles are broken, or if plants or seedlings are pulling up your underlayment. “We are professionals and have an old-fashioned approach to building relationships with clients and constantly striving to earn their trust and business at every opportunity,” said founder and owner Bob McDonald, who has been in the roofing business most of his life. Gulfstream Roofing installs new roofs, does re-roofing, maintenance and repairs for both commercial and residential properties. They recently finished re-

of your roof and the sun exposure can cause the underlayment to deteriorate. The best way to know the condition of your roof – and to make the necessary repairs – is to call a licensed roofing contractor who is bonded and insured. Though some contractors are willing to make roof repairs, the experts at Gulfstream Roofing suggest hiring only a reputable roofing company. A good roof will last about 25 years but you have to know what to look for to make sure it’s in top shape. If you see leaks coming from the corner seams of your gutters then you should have your roof and gutters inspected for debris, missing shingles and broken or missing tiles. Gulfstream Roofing also suggests having a yearly maintenance roof check to examine roof openings such as vents and stacks. “We’ve seen roof leaks caused by plumbers who used a snake to clean a pipe and it tore the roof flashing. This can cause leaks and problems inside the home,” said Weindorfer. It’s also important to do a visual inspection of your home a few hours after a

They not only have an A+ rating on Angie’s list, but their customers can’t say enough good things about them. “We hired Gulfstream Roofing to do a re-roof on an existing concrete tile roof. They were competitive in pricing and started and finished the job quickly. The crew was excellent and the cleanup after removing the old roof was excellent. If you need a new roof this is the company to go to.” The Gulfstream Roofing name is one that is respected and revered in the roofing industry. special feature ║ Look Back at 2015
2015 was quite a year in Delray By LINDA BROWN
{
We take a look back at the five most important stories and trends as we speed toward 2016.
Development Heated battles over development topped the news in 2015. The long debated and soon to be litigated Atlantic Crossing project continues to be front and center. Proponents note that the approved project required no waivers or variances and that developers agreed to 73 conditions demanded by city and neighborhood lead-
96 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
ers. They say the project will add much needed office space and retail to an area of downtown that needs a shot in the arm. They also note the added tax base and jobs promised by the project. Opponents fear traffic and claim the developers took out a promised surface road. Developers counter that the road—Atlantic Court—was part of an old site plan that was actually more intense than the new plan.
They have offered a road directly from US 1 directly into a parking garage. At year end, the project seems headed to court. Another highly contentious project is the proposed iPic theater and office building slated for the old library site. The commission narrowly gave approval to the project, but it still must go through the city’s notoriously clunky site plan pro-
cess before proceeding. Meanwhile, projects continue to pop up south of the avenue and along North Federal Highway. Fire Whether to allow the merger of the Delray Beach Fire Department with Palm Beach County is another landmark issue debated in 2015. Proponents of the merger note that most firefighters want to merge for better wages and benefits and that the city would benefit from the county’s investment in equipment, personnel and facilities. But opponents think the deal will ultimately be a bad one for Delray taxpayers and they want to keep the 100 plus year old department local. Home rule is a big factor. Once the department “goes to the county” it is accepted wisdom that the city won’t be able to get it back should the deal not prove to be advantageous. Cultural Shifts Long time Old School Square President Joe Gillie retired in 2015 and was replaced by Rob Steele. The long time director of the Downtown
Development Authority Marjorie Ferrer also departed in 2015 replaced by her assistant director, Laura Simon. The CRA saw new leadership in 2015 with Jeff Costello taking the reins along with a new chair Reggie Cox. The city also hired a new director of community improvement, former police Capt. Michael Coleman and a new planning director Tim Stillings, as changes continue at City Hall. Other additions include a new HR director and a new Assistant City Manager. Also departing in 2015: long time Banyan Creek Elementary School Principal Bill Fay who retired. Business Not As Usual Downtown Delray continued to evolve in 2015 with two new food markets, several new restaurants and the long anticipated opening of Rocco’s Tacos and Hudson East. Saltwater Brewery grew in popularity and even added some retail distribution in 2015. The Chamber of Commerce had a solid year of growth and recognized Terra Spero, Virginia Snyder, The Milagro Center, Scott Porten and Delray Medical Center with ma-
jor awards at its Luminary Gala. Delray Tech Space led by Mark Laymon made its debut on Congress Avenue and the city’s Young Professionals organization continued to thrive ushering in the new Delray. Not all Good While 2015 saw Delray continue to win accolades, awards, press and attention not everything is rosy. Politics remains divisive in the city and three murders were logged in 2015. The tragic death of Corey Jones of the Delray Beach Housing Authority became national news and longtime observers fret over the fate of the CRA, which many credit with Delray’s renaissance and see as a key to future success. Others lament the tone on the commission dais, which has led to calls for more civility from on and off the dais. But overall, 2015 was an interesting and intriguing year. Property values are up, the downtown is thriving, the beach is packed (alas no Dog Beach) and people continue to flock to what many are calling America’s best small city.

special feature ║ Looking Forward to 2016
2016 promises to be a landmark year in Delray Beach By LINDA BROWN
{
As we head toward New Year’s Day we gaze into our crystal ball to see what readers of Atlantic Ave magazine can expect in 2016.
Real Estate Delray real estate has been on fire. Buoyed by a decent economy and strong demand to live, work and play in the village by the sea both commercial and residential real estate has been soaring. Commercial property has fetched as much as $100 a foot, a staggering sum and evidence of the value that investors are placing on Delray’s strong downtown. Residential property has also soared, es-
pecially in neighborhoods close to downtown such as Lake Ida. Can the increase in values continue? Bulls say the run-up in value has only just begun and will continue as investors and homeowners continue to bid up prices in a desire to live in what has become one of South Florida’s hottest cities and indeed one of the nation’s hot spots. Bears say the values are inflated and based on development rules in place; some

prices simply don’t make sense. There may be sense in both arguments. It might be hard to justify $1 million to $2 million an acre (and up) prices on property near Atlantic Avenue when the city’s rules have gotten tighter and approvals harder to come by. But when measured against other cities, Delray has many of the features that developers, businesses and homeowners desire: walkability, vibrancy, culture and a live,
GRIGOR DIMITROV
work, play lifestyle that’s hard to match. Look for prices to crest, but stay strong. Politics Thanks to increased terms giving the mayor and commissioners three years instead of two, 2016 will be election free. But that doesn’t mean politics won’t continue to be front and center in Delray Beach. Candidates will spend the year jockeying for position and it’s no secret that the city commission is split along personal and some ideological lines. While healing would be nice, most political insiders think the divisions are too deep to resolve. Look for long time Delray residents to begin speaking out more forcefully on issues. Among the fissures: the role of the CRA, the pace of development, the city’s difficult approval process, the cost of services, whether festivals have outlived their usefulness and whether the city can or should continue to subsidize key non-profits. Congress Avenue While development projects downtown are often controversial and fiercely contested, there seems to be consensus to see more investment and projects in the west-
ern parts of the city. As written about previously in Atlantic Ave, a task force has been hard at work on re-imagining Congress Avenue as Delray’s “next great street.” With lagging property values, high office vacancies and a lot of blight and some crime issues, the transformation may take some time, but city officials remain bullish and a 35 plus member task force is also confident in the future. Look for an initial report in early 2016 and a call for public investment in the corridor to spur private interest. Culture Delray’s cultural scene is always interesting and ever changing. Rob Steele is settling in as the new CEO of Old School Square and brings an analytical mind and solid experience to the job. His board is solidly behind a plan to upgrade the grounds, tweak the business model and continue to offer relevant programming to retain the center’s audience and build a new one. The gym, now known as “The Fieldhouse” will be a skunkworks for new and innovative programming such as a
zombie prom and other events to draw a young crowd. Also look for the CRA to make a decision on the fate of the Arts Warehouse near Third and Third. Also in flux is the Artist’s Alley area, which has a new owner. Some artists are staying, others are said to be leaving with efforts being made to retain them somewhere in Delray. Further west, look for arts happening near Saltwater Brewery and possible “activation” of vacant lots on Congress Avenue as a way to draw attention to that emerging area. Hot New Neighborhoods Look for continued investment along the US 1 corridor in 2016. Now that the dust has settled, the street looks great and values are already soaring. The success of US 1 will stretch north of Atlantic to south of Linton Boulevard. The US 1 area near Linton, with Trader Joe’s, LA Fitness, Fresh Market and nearby Starbucks, Five Guys and Tijuana Flats is ripe for redevelopment.

The Man With A Humble Heart
JIM NOLAN { By Diane Feen
Photos by melissa korman
A cat may have nine lives, but to Jim Nolan that’s a blip in the screen of time.
The Delray Beach biochemist and President of Research Sample Bank has a resume so long you might catch yourself napping before he finishes. But chances are you won’t because Nolan is a master storyteller. As Nolan tells it he got a degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Though he had his heart set on going to veterinary school he came up short – even though he worked 40 hours a week. The problem was he made 90 cents an hour as a busboy and $1 an hour running an elevator from 8 pm to 4 am. “I declared a major in biochemistry because I was intrigued by science and research. My brother was a physician’s assistant and my sister was a nurse. My father (who was a tool and die supervisor) said to me, ‘Do not work in the auto industry, it’s terrible.’” Young Nolan listened to his father and stayed as far away from Henry Ford’s genius as he could. His first job was assistant chemist at a liquor company. He made cordials by mixing ingredients such as cocoa beans, raspberry extract and vanilla. His claim to fame was inventing the Pink Squirrel (a mixture of crème de mint, cream almond and cocoa). His next job was for the drug company Parke-Davis. There he worked on making vaccines for polio and influenza, and eventually became Director of Serum Fractionation. “I supervised 300 men - we were open seven days a week, 24 hours a day 50 weeks in a row.” Though he had his eye on a promotion at ParkeDavis, Nolan was asked to move to Ft. Lauderdale to build a serum fractionation plant for Gray Industrials. “I went for the interview but did not want the job. At the time (1969) I was making $12,000 a year, but when the president of Parke-Davis asked what salary I wanted I said, ‘$36,000 a year.’ His reply was, ‘when can you start.’”
102 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
At Gray Industries, Nolan was asked to build a fractionation plant (there were only eight in the world), but soon afterwards the company went bankrupt. It was then that he had the idea to buy blood plasma from hospitals and resell it. “I met this businessman from Costa Rica and he suggested I start my own company. He wrote me a check for $10,000, shook my hand and I drove to hospitals all over Florida. When I first started I didn’t make enough money to pay the tolls, but after a while the business took off.” Half of Nolan Enterprises was eventually sold to a French company. But you didn’t see tears rolling down Nolan’s cheeks. “I was flying to Paris every three weeks on the Concorde, drinking Dom Perignon and eating at Maxwell’s Plum in New York.” It’s safe to say that Nolan had a few more successful companies (and adventures) before settling in Delray, marrying Lori Nolan (manager of the Green Market) and starting a company that sells blood serum from people with diseases. “I love what I do. There are over 30,000 diseases and we provide blood samples to diagnostic companies and researchers. I’ve been to 124 countries in my life and am presently working in Columbia on mosquito-borne diseases,” said Nolan, who holds a stack of passports with photos of a dashing young man on the first page. In his office at Research Sample Bank there is a huge walk-in freezer set at minus 20 degrees, but Nolan relishes every aspect of his job. “I learn something every day at work and I feel like I’m contributing to something great,” said the Mensa member who is quite modest about the fact that he is a member of an organization that only accepts the top 2 percent of the population’s greatest minds. He may have a very highly developed cerebral cortex, but it is his heart that Nolan is most known for (other than selling vinegar and oil at the Green Market). His equally impressive moniker is that of Head Santa at the Old School Square Christmas Tree.
This jolly fellow didn’t seek out the position, it sought him. “Years ago my sister asked me to be a Santa for the kids (in Michigan) and my wife made me a Santa suit. Then a friend asked me to be a Santa for Eastern Airlines Silver Wings program for terminally ill children. Each time I said I wasn’t going to do it, but every time I ended up playing Santa.” It seems Nolan’s destiny is Santa driven. He has been Santa for the past 20 years (in Delray) and continues to get his reds on
during the holidays. Each year Nolan arrives by helicopter (from the North Pole presumably) and lights the 100-foot Christmas tree amid a cheering crowd at Old School Square. “I feel like I’m doing good for the kids - Santa is a sign of hope.” One little girl, who’s been sitting on Nolan’s lap every year for 15 years, has kept everything Nolan has ever given her. “Her mother told me she has a shrine in her bedroom and every night she talks to me. That’s
what keeps me doing this every year.” Nolan has lived a lot in his 75 years, and much of it has contributed to the betterment of mankind. Jeff Perlman puts it this way: “Jim has a big heart, a great sense of humor and a great appetite for life. He’s a raconteur and a community treasure.” Nolan relishes his extraordinary existence and also enjoys time on the golf course and the high seas. “I feel like I’m in God’s waiting room. I just hope he’s really busy.”

The Perfect Gem
MUSSEL BEACH RESTAURANT By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{
The name says Mussel Beach on the blue and white striped awning outside, but there’s a lot more to this Delray restaurant whose namesake is a tiny shellfish with a devoted following.
118 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Lobster hash with Poached Eggs
Yes, they serve 12 different flavors of mussels, steeped in a large iron pot brought piping hot to your table. And yes they are the best mussels on this shore. They come in varying sauces that make them more a delicacy than merely shell fish. The Mussels are imported fresh from Prince Edward Island and come drenched in creamy Lobster Bisque, spicy Fra Diavolo, Thai curry, Mariniere, Florentine and six other exotic sauces. The big news is that Mussel Beach is not just a restaurant that dabbles in gourmet mussels. It’s a bona fide top notch restaurant with culinary institute trained chefs and food that will put you in a state of supreme bliss. Co-owner David McCorison puts it this way, “We want to hit all the senses: the
sweet, the savory, crunchy and salty. Sometimes we will make a dish 12 different ways until we get it perfect.” If practice makes perfect then McCorison is hitting a bull’s-eye and leaving us all in the culinary foreground of ecstasy. You know why, because cooking is a passion for both McCorison and founder co-owner Mark Mezzancello. Both have a background in food preparation and an inking for being the best at what they do. Not a bad combination when you’re aiming to serve fresh savory food that is as memorable as your first kiss (or driver’s license). If you’ve started off with their Truffle fries consider yourself lucky. These piping hot thin cut fries have parmesan cheese, truffle oil and parsley. They’re so tasty you might want to stop and savor the moment, but don’t, because it gets better. The Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp is an equal rival simmered in a Sambuca sauce. The flavor of this seafood delicacy is panoramic and ranges from sweet to savory and back again. It’s truly a seafood treasure of epic proportion. Most restaurants make Calamari today; it’s become a staple in fine restaurants from Italian to continental. But no one makes it like Mussel Beach. Grilled with white beans, spinach, tomato, lemon, garlic, white wine and oregano, this dish is pure perfection. Can you imagine that Mussel Beach now serves Tacos? Well it’s true. The Shrimp Tacos are sublime marinated in a jalapeno aioli, mashed potatoes, onions, peppers and chorizo. Our favorite (truth be told) were the Skirt Steak Tacos with marinated skirt steak, mashed potatoes, cilantro, tomatoes and topped with frizzled onions. The soups are also divine, our favorite being the Lobster Bisque with Fresh Maine lobster, cream, tomato and sherry. It’s large enough for two and bold enough to make you extremely happy. Our entrees could not have been better if they were being served to royalty. The Cobb Salad with blackened Ahi Tuna
Lobster Benedict
Lobster and Crab Crusted Grouper was absolutely perfect cooked in a lemon beurre blanc sauce, served with coconut ginger rice and seasonal vegetables. This dish was moist, tasty and beyond my expectation for purity and excellence. Also popular – and for good reason – is the Pretzel Crusted fish with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables in a Dijon Dill Sauce. When you order fresh fish at Mussel Beach you have your choice of Grouper, Mahi Mahi, Salmon or Swordfish. Then it is up to you to decide what type of preparation peaks your senses. There’s Lobster and Crab crusted, Pretzel crusted, Nut crusted, Sweet potato, Sweet BBQ rubbed and Oscar. They also specialize in fresh lobster tails, Shrimp Francese (which is excellent), Veal Milanese, Filet Mignon and Surf and Turf. If you’re a sandwich kind of guy (or gal) they have burgers, lobster BLT, Crab Cake Sandwich, Chicken and shrimp Pita and other scrumptious sandwiches to flatter your platter. The Big News is that Mussel Beach is now serving SUNDAY BRUNCH and has a full Brunch Menu. Start off with a Bloody Mary, Mimosa or Bellini and go from there. There are Omelets, Jumbo pancakes and Giant French Toast with all the trappings to make your mouth water and your heart flutter (granola, strawberry, chocolate chips or Nutela). When the owners of Mussel Beach do Skirt Steak Tacos
something, they do it right. That’s why they also have brunch favorites like bagel and lox, lobster hash and eggs, breakfast burritos and a host of other Southern and Seafood favorites. Since good food usually goes with great drinks, Mussel Beach is on top of their game. Their Martinis are superb, especially the Melon Martini and the Lychee Martini that has been described as “Something to die for.” Before you leave this haven of heavenly food make sure you try their homemade Desserts. These sweet treats are breathtaking. The homemade Coconut Cream Pie is beyond verbal description. It’s the type of dessert that makes you peek into the box and eat just enough to savor the flavor and indulge in the endorphin rush of it all. They’re also known for their piping hot fried doughnuts with cinnamon, sugar and crème anglaise. Though a meal at Mussel Beach is a happy occasion, they have Happy Hour (at the bar and lounge) Monday to Friday 3:30 to 6:30. Mussel Beach may have a casual countenance but their food is five-star. The vibe is laid back and the servers aim to please. Stop by for a trip to culinary heaven. Bauli Panettone Bread Pudding
In this recipe, Bauli Panettone turns into a silky custard that contrasts with a generous expanse of lovely golden brown crispness on top. Baking it in a “water bath” keeps it moist.
ingredients (Makes 10-12 servings)
1½ Tbsp unsalted butter 1 Bauli Panettone 3 cups heavy cream 8 extra-large egg yolks 2/3 cup real maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cinnamon For topping: Powdered sugar Cinnamon Whipped heavy cream Fresh mint 120 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
preparation
Preheat oven to 325°. Remove crust from the Panettone and cut into 1” squares. On a large baking sheet, arrange the Panettone squares in an even layer, and place in center of oven. Bake until crisp and lightly toasted. Remove from oven and transfer to a buttered 8”x10”x2” dish. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon until fluffy. Add the cream and whisk until well blended. Pour mixture over the toasted Panettone squares and set aside until soft and thoroughly soaked with the custard, turning them occasionally. Cover the baking dish with buttered foil, piercing foil with a few small holes to allow steam to escape. Set the pudding inside a larger baking dish and then place in oven, adding hot water to the larger pan until it reaches halfway up. Bake for about 1 hour or until the custard is just set—an inserted toothpick should come out clean. Remove dish from water bath and place on a rack to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon, and cut into 2½” squares. Top each with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprig of mint, if it’s in season.

Do You Follow Beliefs or Facts in Caring for Your Pets?
I
recently did research on some of the current health challenges that pets have been developing. Many of these are new in the animal kingdom but have shown up in humans for quite some time. An alternative health presenter posed a question that I asked; do you follow beliefs or facts for your pet’s care? We’ve been conditioned through our education to trust select professionals, authority figures and institutions. We are creatures of free will with the ability to think, reason, analyze, and then decide on a course of action. Our pets however are completely reliant on us for their diet, health, housing and safety. In most cases, we can’t interpret what they are truly saying to us. Most of what we do for our pets is done by following our beliefs, many of which are not based on fact. We feed our pets foods that are not made naturally and believe that these so-called “foods” are the best because this has been what we have been taught. We also vaccinate and medicate regularly because someone presented this belief. Take a moment to stop and think, when was the last time you read or even saw the insert to the medication or vacci-
nation you forced your pet to endure? Do you know what your pet experiences as you add toxins and poisons to their body? When you read the insert, the facts are presented. These are only the initial adverse events that are presented resulting from initial trials. Many more events and symptoms develop as we continue to add multiple treatments over a lifetime. Why would you subject your pets to these treatments and lifestyles based only on beliefs that you’ve accepted without doing your own research? Is your regimen for your pets based on scientifically proven facts, in order to offer them what is best? I see pet foods containing apples, corn, wheat, avocado, buckwheat, and pea and potato protein. Have you ever seen a documentary on wild canines or felines picking apples or corn, harvesting any grain or digging up potatoes or carrots? No you haven’t because the facts show this is not part of their natural nutrition plan that nature designed. It’s easy to sit back and believe your doctor and veterinarian; however you should have your pets’ health at the forefront. Listen to the actual words that you are told. “We think,” “Let’s try this drug,” “you need
to…” Ask yourself if this is FACT? Ask for the insert and then ask them to explain while you are reading it. Express your concerns and take note of their reactions and positions. Are they giving you real answers or are they giving you answers that protect their own accountability? Unfortunately, most of these professionals are following beliefs rather than the facts. The AVMA reported years ago that Heartworm “preventatives” do not work. The FDA vaccine submissions show that most don’t work. All drugs have warning labels, and the doctors have virtually no liability. On the other side, food gives us health. Botanicals and herbs are known to give the body the power to heal itself. So, do you want to follow these created beliefs or the ever evolving scientific facts? I choose to follow the facts. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe. com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at Fiesta Pet Deli or www. ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card
Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.
By Stephen Chrisanthus

In the Chamber of Commerce’s quest to help business flourish in the community it offers yet another resource through its relationship with The Small Business Development Center at Palm Beach State College. The SBDC is a cooperative effort of the private sector, the educational community and federal, state and local governments. It enhances economic development by providing small businesses with management and technical assistance The SBDC has access to robust databases, business research resources, and knowledgeable experts who can help successfully navigate the obstacles that come with innovating, launching, growing, and renewing, transitioning a business. “The Chamber’s relationship with the SBDC had been a real game changer for us and our business owners. They are an incredible resource. Their team members meet with business owners and supply them with incredible data, expert relationships and brain power that can dramatically impact their bottom line”, explains Karen Granger, President and CEO of the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. 136 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

He Said/She Said:
Single for the Holidays By Robert V and Marie T
T
he bittersweet Holiday Season is here. You may have survived Thanksgiving (lucky you!) but now there’s Chrismukkah and New Year’s Eve to grapple with. If you’re single (which apparently He prefers) this can be an advantage or (more likely) a disadvantage (according to She). Damn you mistletoe, holiday parties, and that stroke of midnight New Year’s Eve kiss!
He Said:
Single for the Holidays? What’s so good about that? Well, I’ll tell you. Three great things about being solo for the holiday season. 1. Nobody expects you to get them gifts. People are sad for their single friends during this time of year. They feel bad (or envious) that you don’t have in-laws to appease or have listen to endless stories about how your ex’s last significant other tamed lions, cured chicken pox or could change the oil in your car in five minutes. This means that you can make it extra special for yourself and even take a vacation if you want. People will understand! 2. No tree, bush, pole or decorations. We don’t trick out our trees or light up our front lawns for ourselves, we do it for the Jones’. Well, the Jones’ are married with 2.3 kids and we don’t have to play their silly games. Save the money and time it takes to decorate and go on your vacation. 3. We don’t have to worry about falling short in the gift for our spouse department. We guys are notoriously bad shoppers when it comes to picking out gifts for our SO (Significant Other). We think a set of 22’s that happen to fit our car is an excellent gift. After all, she will get to ride around on them. A Roomba seems practical to us, but they think that we are saying that they are incapable of cleaning, or worse yet, only capable of cleaning. So splurge this year and get yourself a Roomba with 22’s. Just make sure the cat knows to steer clear.
138 December 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
She Said:
1. Of course no one “expects” gifts from single men! When they manage to actually shop for a gift, or any gift they get standing ovations. Not the case for women. We are considered shoppers and still have to buy gifts for everyone, and bring a dish to dinner, then endure the usually pity filled looks when you sit down at the odd side of the table - or worse - the kiddie table. Sigh. *pour yourself a good wine here* 2. Not decorating for the holidays is usually UNACCEPTABLE for a woman - especially a Mom. We decorate, shop, bake, and sing songs,
all while watching Hallmark Channel marathon holiday movies. Heaven forbid we show an inkling of sadness or dispair! No one likes a Debbie Downer! Grin and bear it. After January 1st, it will all be over (till Valentine’s Day approaches). *pour another glass of wine here* 3. Lack of a SO (Significant Other) shouldn’t mean you don’t get a gift for the holidays. Treat yourself to a mini getaway or stay-cay! Get spa treatments, lay by the pool or beach and enjoy the simple geography of living in South Florida! Make up a fake persona (after all everyone is a tourist or snowbird, right?) and have a little fun. You’ll have great stories to tell at your next GNO!

Social and economic inequality is shaping up to be a centerpiece issue in the 2016 presidential campaign.
The issue is at the core of “The American Dream,” the notion that in America anything is possible if you work hard and play by the rules. On both ends of the political spectrum; the left and the right, there is a sense that even if you do those things it’s becoming harder and harder to get ahead in America. There’s a sense that it’s more difficult for the poor to ascend to the middle class and beyond, for the middle class to stay in the middle or move up a rung and data shows that indeed the rich are getting richer. Democrats tend to think that government provides solutions and Republicans want to get government out of the way. I don’t think either party has a lock on the truth or the answers and when it comes to Washington both parties have failed—a judgement in which both party’s presidential candidates and grassroots seem to agree. So with Washington failing and hopelessly gridlocked, policy innovation and economic development seem to be left to the states, counties and cities in our nation.

I think the most action happens on the city level, where government is closest to the people and–theoretically at least– most accountable. That’s why it’s critical to keep informed and get involved in your community. I think local policymakers have a tough job to do. The decisions they make are often personal and they vote not in some far off place, but often around the block from where they live. I can’t remember the last time I saw my Congressman or State Representative but local elected officials are easily located—well most of them are or should be. If you can’t find them, get rid of them. So I think the issues of inequality being talked about by candidates ranging from Bernie Sanders to Ben Carson will actually be dealt with by mayors, council members and commissioners in cities across America. The fate of the American Dream has been localized. Which states, cities and regions will offer quality education and economic opportunities? Which cities will work on innovative policy solutions to create attainable housing for young people and allow the rest of us to age in place if we choose to stay?
Which cities will tap into the tremendous human capital that exists in our cities and in neighborhoods that many choose to overlook or ignore? Which cities will aspire to create special places that will attract and retain creative people—artists and entrepreneurs? Who will wake up every day on a mission to create opportunities and protect cherished and hard won victories? Cities have to strike a delicate balancing act—they must respect the past, take care of the present and prepare for the future. Often times they skip the first and last responsibilities and spend their time on the issue du jour. That’s a mistake. Respect for the journey is critical. The past informs the present and also can guide you into the future. Neglecting the future will leave your city vulnerable to communities that are working to further the American Dream. Ask yourself where your city is on this spectrum of thought. Let’s hope they are addressing the past, the present and future.
