February is a great month to be in Delray Beach

n behalf of the staff of Atlantic Ave Magazine we wish you a happy and healthy New Year. The weather is perfect, the streets are bustling and you have bragging rights over your friends in the northeast who are trying desperately to find a flight to enjoy what we have every single day. In this issue of Atlantic Ave, we introduce you to romance Delray style, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Speaking of romance, we also take you inside the luxurious new villas at Crane’s Beach House. Trust us, they are amazing. February is also about tennis and garlic. The ATP tour is back in Delray with U.S. Open Champ Marin Cilic, the Bryan Brothers and other rising stars. If you haven’t gone yet, put it on your to-do list. It’s an amazing event and there’s nothing like sitting under the stars and watching world class tennis in your hometown’s downtown. As for the Garlic Fest, this event stinks, but we mean that in a good way. We love it. And we love Mr. Garlic too, our own Tom Johnston. Looking ahead to March, we also have coverage of Wellfest 2015, an innovative event that has come a long way since its birth. Finally, we also give coverage to BeKind Delray, a cool, new initiative launched by the Young Professionals Association of Delray. Keep an eye on this initiative and the young professionals behind it. They are the future and it’s a good thing they are focused on kindness. We can use more kindness in this world. by the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce and winner of the third annual Best Bite on the Ave competition at Crane’s Beach House Hotel, is now offering guests fresh pasta made daily in a new pasta-making room visible to guests. The brainchild of Executive Chef Ernesto DeBlasi, the new station includes a large glass window, making it possible for guests to see the pasta they may be eating actually being made in a sealed room. “We’ve had guests request a table right in front of the new station so they could watch the pasta being made while they’re eating their dinner,” DeBlasi said. With the new pasta-making booth, in the back of the restaurant next to the kitchen, DeBlasi is using an imported Italian pasta machine to create pasta in shapes and flavors that the restaurant couldn’t previously offer. Equally important, he says, is the ability to ensure the pasta meets the restaurant’s high standards. “With the ability to create the pasta right here in the restaurant comes the freedom to select the products that go into the product,” he said. At Caffe Luna Rosa, DeBlasi uses mostly eggs instead of water to create a high-protein pasta and made with only Eggland’s Best Eggs. “You’re probably not going to get the high level of quality of fresh, daily made pasta anywhere else in the area,” he said. With the new pasta machine, DeBlasi can now offer pasta in a variety of shapes including creste di gallo, fusilli bucati and rotini. Other specials include 75 percent whole-wheat pasta and homemade ravioli along with ca-

vatelli made with an attachment DeBlasi hand crafted. “The new cuts of pasta have the entire kitchen inspired to create new sauces,” he said. Thanks to the new machine and the pasta-making station, Caffe Luna Rosa is one of just a handful of South Florida restaurants making pasta onsite. “Very few restaurants in the area have the opportunity to make their pasta every day and serve it fresh daily,” DeBlasi said.

These individuals and organizations make a significant difference in our community and they exemplify ‘The Heart of a Woman,’” event chair, Jeannette DeOrchis said. 2015 Senior Games Kick Off in Delray Beach

Florida Sports Foundation Invites Seniors to Participate in City’s 26th Annual Games It’s time for area residents to brush off their athletic shoes and start warming up – the Senior Games are here in Delray Beach and began January 30. The Delray Beach Senior Games are excited to provide a week full of fun, fitness and competition for anyone age 50 or older. Whether it’s billiards or basketball, there’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved through a variety of activities. Age divisions within each event ensure that senior athletes are competing with others of similar age. The games – which are part of the Florida Senior Games and presented by the Florida Sports Foundation – will take place across Delray Beach from Jan. 30 through Feb. 6. Entry fees start at $15 and activities at this year’s games include basketball, archery, billiards, bowling, croquet, golf, pickle ball, swimming, and track and field.

The Delray Beach Senior Games is a qualifier on the way toward the Florida Senior Games State Championships, which will be held in Clearwater December 5-13. “Doctor Caught Red-Handed Using 120-Year-Old Technology in Practice...” Dear Friend, Okay, you caught me. What can I say? I’m not going to apologize for it. Since 1895, the main procedure used in my profession hasn’t changed all that much. Why change something that works so well? Of course, people are always welcome to use more modern, more invasive technologies to ‘help’ with their health concerns. That’s certainly their prerogative. At first glance, people are often impressed with “cutting edge” or highly sophisticated therapies and drugs.

But lack of health very often has simple causes and very reasonable corrections. Our genetics haven’t changed much at all in the last 50,000 years, yet we do things and behave in ways we were never designed to do. For example, humans were never designed to sit all day at desk jobs, work on factory assembly lines, or eat mountains of sugars, refined carbohydrates, or artificial foods laden with preservatives. So, the sudden jump in chronic diseases doesn’t surprise me one bit. Sometimes, looking backward is just as important as looking forward. Human genes can’t be asked to adapt to sedentary lifestyles, poor nutrition, constant negative and stressful thoughts, and unnatural chronic ‘mechanical’ stresses. In general, we were never designed to live the lifestyle we do today. So, what can we do? We can continue to eat poorly and take drugs for high cholesterol. We can continue to think rotten thoughts and take antidepressants. We can continue the sedentary lifestyle that is slowly wrecking our lives, and hope someday we’ll become motivated. Before I go on and tell you more, let me tell you something about me… Here’s my story… “I was twelve years old and was experiencing debilitating migraines. he cold month of February is traditionally a slow time for major movie releases, but this year has a notable exception: the much-anticipated release of the screen version of the steamy novel “Shades of Grey,” which promises to warm up audiences. February 6 Everybody’s crying about “The Seventh Son,” and in the whole round world I’m the only one.

“The Seventh Son” is not based upon the Willie Dixon song that became a hit for Johnny Rivers. This fantastical thriller is based upon the novel “Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney and directed by Sergei Bodrov (“Mongol”). The Spook of the title is Master Gregory, a knight played by Jeff Bridges. Centuries ago Spook imprisoned the evil witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore). Now she has escaped. Spook has but one month to train Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son to confront Mother Malkin and save the world, or something like that. Channing Tatum to the rescue! “Jupiter Ascending” is the latest from the sibling writing-directing team of Andy and Lana Wachowski (“The Matrix”). Mila Kunis plays the title character, born under a starry sky and destined for great things. Somewhere along the line things went wrong for poor Jupiter and she is reduced to cleaning toilets for a living. Then a super-dude, genetically-engineered ex-military hunter named Caine (Tatum) appears. He traveled from outer space to track down Jupiter and inform her of an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. Supporting cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Kick Gurry, David Ajala and Gugu Mbatha.

February 13 For fans of E.L. James’s & m novel “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Friday the 13th may be your lucky day. When naïve 21-year-old literary college student Anastasia “Ana” Steele fills in for her friend Kate (Eloise Mumford) to interview wealthy young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she immediately becomes smitten and falls under his spell. Jeong), and despite a crush on hunky Toby (Nick Eversman), she hatches a plot to recruit slick, charming jock Wesley (Robbie Amell) to humiliate the school’s ruthless label-maker Madison (Bella Thorne) and remind everyone no matter how we look or act, we are always someone’s DUFF. Kevin Costner is back as a gringo newcomer cross-country coach at a predominantly Latino Central Valley California high school in “McFarland.” The movie is based on the actual events in 1987 when coach Jim White (good name), played by Kevin Costner, builds a championship crosscountry team from exceptionally talented farm kids. Facet Syndrome:

A Major Cause of Back and Neck Pain

Shockingly, 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from neck and low back pain sometime during their life, with facet syndrome accounting for a large percentage of these symptoms. A recent study on low back pain showed involvement of one or more facet joints in 79% of the patients.

Many individuals with facet syndrome will often notice low back stiffness that becomes worse when sitting for long periods of time or when they first wake up in the morning and begin to move. They also may have trouble turning their head side to side or at times need to turn their entire upper body because it is too painful. Even bending forwards and backwards or walking upright can be very difficult. Facet syndrome can present itself as well-localized, dull or burning pain in the neck and low back, but that is not always the case. Lumbar facet syndrome can radiate into the buttock region, pelvis or thighs rarely traveling below the knee, while cervical facet syndrome can produce pain in the shoulder, arms, mid back and can also cause severe headaches. Most often individuals will blame their stiffness and pain on such things as their mattress, pillow or stress. They may even think that it is “normal” to feel this way. Articular facets are bony projections on the superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portion on the backside of the vertebras of the spinal column. These areas interlock with each other making up the zygapophyseal joint or “z-joint” which promote spinal support and are the key components to insure proper spinal motion. Like any other joint within the body, these areas experience constant repetitive movements where they interlock and become susceptible to injury and

other degenerative conditions. Conditions such as Arthritis, Overuse Syndrome and Stereotypic Movement Disorders are some of the most common. Facet joints are incased in a synovial capsule which supplies proper nutrients to the joint and provides the “meniscoid” structure with lubrication needed to insure smooth gliding over one another, much like the meniscus in our knees. These joints are in constant motion throughout our life and can become worn and traumatized. As these joints become worn, they no longer provide the proper lubrication they need and can become inflamed and irritated, leading to Facet Joint Osteoarthritis in the future. Bony projections begin to form within the joint causing it to become hypertrophied (enlarged) and in-

flamed, limiting an individual’s range of motion and producing pain. The main focus when treating any facet syndrome is to restore proper motion and function to the joint along with decreasing pain and inflammation. Conservative treatment options should be the first choice for an individual suffering from this condition. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is one of the best ways to restore that lost mobility in the spinal column. Non-surgical spinal decompression and flexion-distraction can be a gentle and painless way to decompress the facet joints and aid in stretching tight musculature in the neck and low back. In addition, applying class IV cold laser therapy to the involved area will enhance the metabolism of local cells, increasing blood flow, reducing pain and swelling thus speeding up the healing time. “Re-training” or “firing” specific areas of the brain by way of neurophysiologic exercises can increase tone within the muscles of the spine to improve stability. Lastly, ergonomic changes, mobilization therapy, and properly prescribed stretch/strengthening exercises will help ensure any recurring episodes. Five Health Conditions Your Dentist Can Spot

Your oral health may offer clues to your overall health, and the signs are clear

You expect your dentist to be able to spot cavities, inflammation and more, but did you ever consider that he/she might also be able to notice some more serious health issues? The state of your smile may offer insight on the rest of your body and possible health-threatening conditions, sometimes even before other symptoms show up. Diabetes Most people focus on the whiteness of their teeth to judge how healthy their smile is, but your gums also play an important role in determining oral health. In a 2014 study, nearly twothirds of dentists said they’d refer a patient with periodontitis (inflammation around the gums) for a diabetes evaluation. The reason being that high blood sugar may be as damaging to your oral health as the sweet sugars in a can of soda. That’s because the condition can cause dry mouth, which increases plaque build-up, making people with uncontrolled diabetes more prone to dental problems.

Heart Disease Because the mouth is a passageway to the body, people who have chronic gum disease are at the highest risk for having a heart attack, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Gum disease (called gingivitis in its early stages and periodontal disease in the late stages) is caused by plaque buildup. Some researchers have suggested that gum disease may contribute to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can increase clot formations, which elevate blood pressure and increase the risk of a heart attack. Signs include loose, shifting or missing teeth, and increased probing depths, where the pockets around the teeth have deepened. Dementia Is tooth loss linked to memory loss? In recent British research, a lack of teeth was associated with mental decline, while a 2012 study found that older adults with poor dental hygiene were 76 percent more likely to develop

dementia. The research is relatively new so the link between the two isn’t perfectly clear. However, a small 2013 study detected Porphyromonas gingivalis (a bacteria associated with gum disease) in the brains of people with dementia, suggesting that it may play a role in the inflammation associated with cognitive decline. Osteoporosis Osteoporosis won’t cause your teeth to decay, but your dentist may be able to spot bone loss in the surrounding bones like the jaw. Normal, healthy bone should be dense at the edges and the interior, but when that’s not the case, the patient is likely to have osteoporosis. A 2013 study in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences found that the thickness of postmenopausal women’s jawbones was correlated with the bone density of their spine. This means that dentists could potentially diagnose osteoporosis in the early stages, which often goes undetected until a fracture occurs. Acid Reflux Disease You may feel heartburn most intensely in your chest, but the effects may be more obvious in your mouth. If you have acid reflux disease, the constant uprising of stomach acid could wear away at the enamel on your teeth and literally erode your teeth, making them appear thinner. In a 2008 study review, researchers found that almost 30 percent of adults with dental erosion also had a gastrointestinal esophageal reflux disease, or GERD. It is important to note that erosion can happen even without chest pain, so you may have reflux without even knowing it, making your dentist’s diagnosis very important. Bottom line: your dentist is here to help. Make your dental health a priority and pay attention to your body. How Sweet Are Your Wrinkles?

In this celebratory month of love, it’s important to honor even those tumultuous relationships…and to consider what you are feeding them. The relationship between the skin and the gut is one of love and hate.

The emotions are so intertwined, the symptoms dramatic. When one is acting up, the other is the cause of irritation. When things are calm, it’s easy to feel and see. There are many factors that contribute to the ups and downs: food, environment, stress. Yet, there is one particular player that sneaks around, hides when you are paying attention, and wreaks havoc when you are not. Candida starts as a one-celled yeast. It is part of the balance in the gut flora, between the good bacteria and the bad. Candida quickly multiplies, fueled by sugar, growing into filaments that spread, emitting enzymes that actually feed on tissues and take nutrients from them. This infiltration is not only in the gut, but also in other organs. Candida is a sugar addict, and once it’s overgrown any kind of sugar supports it to flourish. It feeds off of any sweetness from concentrated sugars like agave, corn syrup, even fruit, to refined foods like bread and pasta. If overgrowth is severe, anything that affects the immune system, like lack of sleep or stress can encourage candida to grow. The yeast targets the weakest cells. Candida convinces that sugar is necessary. If you stop eating all sugar, the highly evolved filaments release 79 different toxins into the body, creating a dramatic (near death) need for sugar. You feel ill until you eat sugar, then you feel better. For this reason, so many people abandon a healthy diet or detox. For this reason, all you want for Valentine’s Day is a box of chocolates. Its result is directly or indirectly related to several health issues. It can lead to gluten sensitivity, weight gain, fatigue, nutritional deficiencies, etc. The skin, the most visible witness to our inside relationships, shows signs of candida. Wrinkles, acne, eczema, psoriasis,

tinea versicolor (white spots on the skin), bumps on the back of the arms: these skin responses can be traced back to candida, or at least to a blockage exacerbated by it. The connection to the skin is not always transparent, which is no surprise due to candida’s innate sneakiness: • Candida creates inflammation, destroys the tightly bonded cells in the intestines causing leaky gut, which leads to bacteria and toxins seeping out of the porous intestines. As the largest detox organ, the skin works to get rid of these toxins. It shows up as acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, eczema, etc. • Candida releases enzymes that digest tissues, which cause inflammation. Inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. • The gut is crucial to the health of the immune system. When candida infiltrates the gut and continues to grow, the immune system is compromised. The skin can reflect immune responses like psoriasis and eczema. • Candida steals nutrients from the cells. The now weak cells in the gut and organs reflect on the face. If your liver is weak, for example, the weakness will reflect between your

eyes. Weak cells on your face are more vulnerable to damage from external sources: the sun, radiation, air pollution, and chemicals in products. This situation will reflect in the skin as wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and brown spots. When we focus on the relationship between the skin and the gut: “It’s complicated.” Yet, the many blockages that affect the health of skin can be linked back to the gut, and tumultuous scenarios in the gut can be linked back to candida. Does Lifting More Weight Mean More Muscle? By Jay Bozios

“How much do you bench?” This is a common question you might hear while working out at the gym. Most gym goers, especially males, are too concerned about how much they can lift. This is probably because most of these people believe there is a connection between both strength and size. If you see someone with larger muscle mass than you, do you automatically assume that they are stronger than you?

First, let’s talk about resistance training. This type of training can be done with a weight machine, free weights, cables, or even with your own body weight. Take the dumbbell bench press, for example. When performing this exercise correctly, you’re applying stress on the chest muscles (pectoralis major and pectoralis minor). When put under enough stress these muscles will tear; which is why you often feel sore after an intense workout. After a muscle is torn the body will then repair this muscle creating growth and added strength. During and after resistance training the body releases hormones, which are messengers that carry information to your cells. There are dozens of different types of hormones in the human body but for now let’s focus on just the hormones that aid in repairing and building new muscle. The more resistance and stress your muscles are under directly relates to the amount of hormones the body releases. When I say “more resistance and stress” I am not necessarily talking about weight load. I am instead referring to the actual time that these muscles are under stress. This is known as time under tension or TUT for short. TUT refers to how long the muscle is under strain during a set. The idea of TUT is to slow down your repetitions and focus on the contraction of the muscle, instead of the amount of weight and the speed in which you lift it. These added 10-15 seconds of resistance training during a set can make a big difference on the effective-

ness of your lift and the new muscle you are creating. The increase in specific hormones released combined with this extensive muscle breakdown is the ideal combination for gaining muscle. By putting the muscle under longer bouts of strain, you can cause extensive muscle breakdown leading to sleeve-busting muscles. So next time you’re in the gym and you see someone lifting more than they should with bad form and poor range of motion, take a smarter and more efficient approach. Try lowering the weight, raising the amount of re p e t i t i o n s and really focus on your form and contracting those muscles. These small but real changes in your lifting program might be the edge you need to reach your fitness goals.

A beautiful love story characterized by Irving Berlin with his 1946 musical “Annie Get Your Gun.” Alfred Lunt & Lynn Fontanne This acting couple were married in 1922 and for the next 55 years were inseparable. They dazzled Broadway from 1919 (when they first appeared together in ‘A Young Man’s Fancy’) until 1958 when they left the stage. That same year, the Old Globe Theater in New York City was renamed Lunt-Fontanne Theater in their honour.

Prince Edward & Wallis Simpson What would you give up for love? Prince Edward, heir to the British throne first met the twice married, once divorced American, Mrs, Wallis Simpson in 1931. However, their love did not completely flourish until 1934 on a cruise. In 1936 King George V passed away leaving Edward as King. Wanting to marry, the soon to be divorced Wallis Simpson, King Edward had no choice than to abdicate the throne. They married in June 1937 and lived for most of their lives in exile in France, shunned by many. Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton This fiery and passionate love affair began when they first met on the set of Cleopatra in 1963. Their first onscreen kiss lasted so long the director had to ask them whether he could say ‘cut.’ They continued kissing! Married and divorced twice this couple remained obsessed by each other. February Events Help Shine Spotlight On All Delray Beach Has To Offer

There is always something fun going on in Delray Beach but this month even more so. In February some outstanding events with international appeal take place. “The month of February is a great time to be in Delray Beach because there are events for just about everyone,” says Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC). “Whatever you’re looking to come out and enjoy, we’ll have it for you.” This month, Delray Beach will host three outstanding events that celebrate the culture, the sports activities and the great food and entertainment Delray Beach is known for. On Feb. 6 and 7, the “Best Stinking Party in Town” is back as the 16th Annual Delray Beach Garlic Fest returns to the grounds of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. The following weekend – and through the next week – the focus will be on tennis as the Delray Beach Open by The Venetian® Las Vegas returns to town, bringing with it world-class men’s tennis. At the end of the month, the Spady Living Heritage Festival returns to Northwest Fifth Avenue after a six-year hiatus. As part of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum’s Black History Month, the event will feature music, food and activities celebrating Palm Beach County’s black history. The Spady Living Heritage Festival is one of only a handful of events of its kind in Florida. Chrisanthus, whose organization supports all three through help with planning or promotion, sees the February activities

Last year, according to John Butler, executive director of the Delray Beach Open, close to 52,000 people attended the tennis championships, creating an economic impact of an estimated $13 million. Organizers of Garlic Fest estimate that more than 40,000 people attend the threeday festival, which generates an estimated $1.4 million in economic impact. The Spady Living Heritage Festival, a oneday event, is expected to draw about 3,000 visitors this year. All help Delray Beach raise its profile and attract more visitors, more new residents and new businesses. “We hope that the people coming to experience these events see Delray as not only a place to visit but somewhere great to live

and open a business,” said Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the DBMC. Those who attend one or more of the events will see a mix of new features as well as some old favorites. At Garlic Fest, for example, the Garlic Chef competition will return and there will still be lots of garlic flavored food, along with outstanding musical entertainment, including Rebelution and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. New this year will be the Delray Beach Garlic Fest Collaborative Kitchen Dining Experience, bringing chefs from area restaurants together to create a multi-course meal. Her background laid the foundation for her to excel in the real estate industry. “Being an accountant taught me about following through with every detail in a transaction and it fine tuned my organizational skills,” said Karen. It is this follow through (like in a golf swing) that has garnered Karen a steady

Great artwork astonishes the onlooker. It evokes emotion, thought and delight.

That’s what you get when you see the artwork, murals and interior spaces created by Dana Donaty. She not only pushes the creative envelope to infinity, but she stamps it with distinguished characteristics that make you think Dali, Jackson Pollock or Annie Leibovitz. But to ascribe anyone else to her inimitable style would do her injustice. That’s because Donaty’s artistic brilliance is on display the moment you meet her. It’s on her clothing (that is covered in paint), her studio (where decorative wall art and fine art intersect) and her home. One of the first things you see when you enter her home is a wall that says “YES” made of cement, silver leaf and iron patina. A few feet away you will see colorful

artwork with creatures and surrealistic features that mirror life and its inherent largeness. But that suits this Delray artist just fine. “Everyone sees something different in my paintings. It’s as if abstraction and figuration had a love child. I breathe in the culture and out comes a painting,” said the Moore College of Art and Design graduate who lived in London before coming to South Florida. Donaty is also well-known (and respected) for her expressive and expansive murals that adorn public spaces, homes and businesses. There’s a life-size mural of the Loxahatchee wildlife on the exterior wall of the Delray Camera Shop, a colorful cityscape in Bleu Café and a 20-foot mural that marries art with architecture

at Sandbar Boston’s on the Beach. Donaty was also chosen over hundreds of other artists to do a complicated yet whimsical mural for a Head Start School in Palm Beach County. But like all constellations of creation Donaty has evolved. She is still creating large murals - that illustrate the moods and manners of our times in electric hues - but she has added a lot to her repertoire of genius. That’s why designers and homeowners come to her to create unique yet sophisticated ceilings, walls and artwork that define and defy convention. There are Mica stone panels with silver leaf on canvas that glitter with a rare naturalness, plaster ombré wall murals and unconventional faux finishes in the most unlikely places. That’s what defines this artist – it’s her indefinable artistic brilliance. She sees things most people don’t see and creates interiors, public art, murals and fine art that come from a place of rotating fantasy and innate reality. She defines spaces and canvas with a texture, gloss or color that will make you feel as if you are inhabiting the earth at a higher altitude than usual. But she does it with clients as a collaborative effort. They explain their vision and Donaty runs with it (or sprints) to the artistic finish line. Donaty has also perfected the art of family portraits, but not in the conventional sense. She imbibes the culture of the family, learns about their personalities and then creates a colorful panorama of the entire clan. Think Disney meets Dali. If there is an antidote to the boring portraits of yesteryear, Donaty has hit upon its golden core. She also does pet portraits, landscapes and exotic murals that create a mood and manner for homes, condos or commercial spaces. Most of the Murals and family portraits are done in the studio and installed like wallpaper (or attached in panels). “It doesn’t take time away from the client and they’re removable. If you move you can take the artwork with you. Clients have us relocate and reinstall their murals from one location to the next,” said Barry Bernstein, of Dana Donaty Design. These collaborative efforts are what Donaty calls her commission work. For

one client she added texture and gloss in their foyer with Italian Lime Venetian Plaster. For a home in Palm Beach Gardens she added faux wood grain ceiling beams with matching baseboards and doors frames. “People are personalizing their spaces and adding character and warmth. I use decorative cement finishes, liquid iron, Venetian plaster, mica, gold and silver leaf,” said Donaty. When you see Donaty’s work in its raw form it’s as if Michelangelo has been sprinkling fairy dust overhead. But this local artist doesn’t need any help from the masters, she has become one herself. “I have been doing this for 20 years and offer super personal service for each client. I draw my projects on the computer so clients can see what they are getting.” The New Jersey native inherited some of her talent genetically; the rest came in like a hail storm. Her mother’s family, from South America, were artists and her father was a doctor. Donaty does cling to some convention (like the signs she has from her father’s medical office) and the wall to wall display of fancy footwear similar to that of Imelda Marcos. But that’s what’s so unique and mystifying about Donaty. Her creative ability has an endless megabyte capacity and the paint that falls to her feet have recently become surrealistic paintings sold to collectors. Her work has also been purchased by celebrities, sports figures and government agencies and she has won awards for her

public art projects and installations. Dana Donaty Designs also opened a studio in Miami. It is there (and in Delray Beach) that Donaty take her client’s dreams and converts them into reality. Pick up Wall Street Journal or Fortune, and one might imagine top executives with stratospheric earnings steely and ruthless, narcissistic and Machiavellian at heart. Hardly a fair portrayal.

I know many executives who fit those traits, some who make a fortune, but I think it a mistake to universalize. This is more a modern myth inspired by the loudest, brashest icons in popular culture. The late (and amazing) Steve Jobs comes to mind. One might come away from reading Walter Isaacson’s very even-handed biography of Jobs wondering just how much more might have been possible without the insanity he inspired at companies under his watch. He created seeming miracles, but left a lot of pain and abusive relationships, writes Isaacson. Coaching executives, I see some unique individuals leading with a different kind of intelligence. A grounded, respectful approach borne of “presence”. With keen awareness of lifestyle as well as profits, many are deeply satisfied at both home and work. Do these things to become a “presence-centered” 1. Get Grounded. In Stephen Covey’s revered “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, he speaks of “sharpening the saw”. He categorizes opportunities to work on ourselves as: physical, spiritual, intellectual and social/emotional. He challenges us to create daily disciplines to bring out our very best and maximize the natural strengths we all possess. Strenuous physical exercise to the point of breathlessness is a daily must. Keeping our intelligence sharp with proper reading expands our minds. Nurturing spiritual practices of prayer, meditation or yoga can pay exponential dividends, especially in our capacity to manage stress, and particularly at home. Maintaining a supportive network of friends and colleagues can keep our emotional batteries charged. Sparring with a professional coach, especially over social/ emotional matters can help us hone our very best expression of self.

2. Keep Agreements. The bedrock of high self esteem, or how good we feel about ourselves, is a relentless habit of following through. It is doing what we say we’re going to do, especially for ourselves. Set an alarm for 5? Get up and get going. Covey refers to this habit of never hitting the snooze alarm as our “first personal victory of the day.” Quitting alcohol? Do everything in your power to stay clear and sober, enlisting sober colleagues and even an executive coach experienced with dependency. Volunteering for a board seat? Dive in and get busy. Get your hands in it. Give yourself to it. Avoid apologizing for your absence. Following through on the hard things we set for ourselves makes us emotionally resilient and raises our feelings of good will toward ourselves and others. Meeting a challenge, especially one of high stakes with risk involved, keeps our spirits strong. This is especially important away from the office. Make a promise to be home for dinner? Keep it. Guard your promises to your family and friends with reverence. High earnings and a fat 401K won’t do us any good without someone to share it with. It’s great to be a master of the universe. Be a master of your own personal universe first. 3. Stay “current” in relationship. Being a “solo-trepeneur” can be exciting. Having a great idea and the drive to pull it off can be an amazing experience of validation. And sometimes our best efforts are completely alone, unfettered by the noisy environments of work groups. But we are at our core “pack animals” whose need for close support of others is a fundamental part of our best nature. We “fill our spiritual cups” with kinship and camaraderie. We needn’t always be alone in our endeavors. Nourish and attend these relationships, and finish “un-finished”

business. Criticize a colleague unfairly in public? Apologize as soon as the dust settles, and make clear your resolve to self-monitor such destructive behaviors in the future. Argue with your spouse? Go back and talk it out when the high emotion has passed. Constant vigilance for breaches and an eagerness to repair them is a hallmark of long lasting relationships, at work and at home. Our quest for a leadership style that is as nourishing for ourselves as it is helpful to others is never-ending. The moment you enter through the doors of the boutique, you are greeted by a friendly, warm smile by one of their staff and racks of elegant dresses, casual yet fashionable women’s jackets and pant sets, unique accessories including sparkling necklaces, handbags, hats and much more. Since opening in 1978, Hy Pa-Hy Ma has been a favorite among locals and visitors in Delray Beach who are looking to add sophisticated styles to their wardrobe. Owner Nance Bernet, who has been working in the hospitality business for many years through owning women’s stores and a hotel in Delray Beach, wanted to bring a unique and upscale women’s boutique to the area. Hy PaHy Ma started offering oriental style clothing, such as satin kimonos and accessories, later she added an art gallery, and then as the times changed so did the styles and clothing. Nance

also has a unique sense of style and a warm, inviting personality that makes customers feel right at home. “Hy Pa-Hy Ma actually started out with an oriental flavor and then customers wanted frocks that were carefree and floaty, since we were catering to the beach area. At that time, it just evolved. The demands were different, and we went along with the demands. The demographics changed, people became more urbane with the upscale restaurants and cafes. You have to move along with the trends. Now we offer a variety of sophisticated styles catering to the customers’ preferences,” said Nance. The owner has a wide variety of women’s attire, everything from casual wear to cocktail wear, mother of the bride or groom dresses and specialty accessories. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind, and they only use high quality fabrics. They also fill the store with

the latest trends and top designers, including Angela Moore, Mary Francis, Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman and many more. All their clothing is upscale yet very affordable. “We accommodate everything from casual and sophisticated day wear, lots of separates, jackets, skirts and pants, cocktail attire, and everything in between,” said Nance. Sure, Delray Beach is a fun city. Rand McNally named Delray America’s “Most Fun Small Town” in 2012. Delray is also a two time All America City winning the coveted award in 1993 and again 2001, becoming the first city in the Sunshine State to become a two-time winner. But as Valentine’s Day approaches, we at Atlantic Ave Magazine contend that Delray is also a romantic city; in fact we will go so far as to call Delray the most romantic city outside of Paris.

Scoff if you wish, but reserve your judgment until you read our five reasons why Delray makes us go weak in the knees.

Reason # 1 If you’ve been downtown on a Friday night to see music at the Delray Center for the Performing Arts you’ll see couples of all ages dancing to the music. Whether they are conjuring up their best moves from the Disco era or dancing cheek to cheek to a romantic cover of a classic Earth, Wind & Fire song, there is no doubt that love and romance is in the air on a weekly basis through the season at the concert series. You can usually find Delray’s impresario extraordinaire Joe Gillie holding court west of the stage as he marvels at the large crowds loving every note. Reason # 2 Have you been to the ocean lately? It amazes some of us at Atlantic Ave how many people who live, work and play in Delray haven’t been to the beach in years. Well, some people are going. An estimated 1.1 million visitors a year enjoy the sun, surf and sand. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you can stroll the ocean front promenade and visit the new pavilion made possible through the support of the city and the Beach Property Owners Association. Cool ocean breezes, magnificent sunrises and sunsets, views of the Gulfstream make for a highly romantic setting. There’s usually plenty of parking early in the morning and just before sunset. So enjoy. Reason #3 Lots of people gripe about the art shows and festivals that fill up the local calendar and bring lots of crowds to Delray. But you know what, we like them. Whether it’s the amazing Delray Art League exhibiting the talents of local artists (don’t miss their Plein Air Festival marking

their 50th anniversary February 26 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. downtown) or the Garlic Fest (February 6-8) which raises money for local charities or the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day Parade which brings firefighters from all over the world to Atlantic Ave., festivals put Delray on the map. We love them and they are better to stroll or enjoy with a special someone. Think of them as romantic opportunities and forget about the street closures.

Reason #4 Water is romantic. So is boating, sailing, canoeing and picnicking near a body of water. Delray is blessed with not only an ocean, but a beautiful lake and a magnificent Intracoastal Waterway. Lake Ida Park is an underappreciated jewel. Chock full of nature, with birds of all kinds, the park is dog friendly, features walking trails and barbecue facilities and is simply ideal for a romantic day away from it all. We like both the main entrance areas of the park which includes a heavily used dog park (with areas for pets large and small) and the neighborhood entrance to the park near the Delray Playhouse which has a shaded party pavilion. If you are lucky enough to own a boat,

cruising on the lake and nearby canals is idyllic. And the nature is simply spectacular.

Reason #5 Sure we have restaurants. Yes, we have incredible spa facilities and marvelous hotel accommodations; all are essential elements to a romantic destination. But cities cannot be romantic without a cool vibe and a strong sense of community. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about people; as Barbra Streisand sort of once sang. What gives Delray its edge is despite the changes, you can still see your friends on the Ave and in the Grove. You can catch a Grammy winner at the Arts Garage and then steal away with friends to a nearby bistro or wine bar where you can see even more people you know. There is no place, like this place, anyplace. Romantic, fun, vibrant, exciting and ever changing.

Pascal Liguori (known as Pat) is unique in the real estate industry. And he’s fine with that definition.

That’s because this father of five has been in the real estate industry for the past 35 years and has learned from the best. “My father Alfonso owned a tavern when I was young and he wanted a professional opportunity so he went into real estate. Delray Beach is a fun city. Delray Beach is an All America City (twice). But is Delray Beach a kind city?

With elections heating up this time of year, it may not be the right time to ask that question, but regardless a group of young professionals has launched #BeKindDelray, a new initiative that is asking people to perform acts of kindness, or in other words, to “pay it forward.” They want us to imagine a city where brotherly love is shared by all citizens and kind acts are exchanged as a way of life. This is what the Young Professionals Association of Delray, otherwise known as YPAD, is looking to foster with its new “kind cards”

campaign. “Delray Beach is more than a beautiful city to keep warm in the winter, it is a city that radiates warmth from the people who live here year round. This campaign hopes to capitalize on the kindness of our community, and spread it to all corners in a traceable method utilizing social media,” explains Stephen Chrisanthus, Associate Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative and member of YPAD. Who better to initiate such a campaign than young professionals, who continue to

flock to Delray to live work, play and yes be nice to each other. Attracted by Delray’s energy and vibrant nightlife, young professionals are a growing demographic in the city, especially downtown. As this youthful movement grows so does YPAD and the number of events it hosts. One of the more recent events was a holiday themed meet up that kicked off at Santa’s House in Old School Square Park followed by a Happy Hour Social at Tryst. The first 20 attendees who arrived with a toy to donate to Toys 4 Tots re-

A private tour of the 100-foot Christmas Tree was provided by Chrisanthus, where fun facts about the tree, the house and all the holiday festivities were shared. Following the tour, there was some casual networking before a “Be Kind “campaign announcement was made by YPAD Chair, Kilburn Sherman who also serves as Finance Manager of Maclendon Wealth Management, a local Delray business who sponsored the event. “The idea is to pass out 1,000 cards and track the story of each card as it passes between people. The stories will be used to highlight kind acts and showcase what our community is capable of inspiring in each other. While we can’t predict the future, we hope this will create a movement that brings our community closer,” said Sherman. YPAD and campaign sponsor, Maclendon Wealth Management, introduced the “Kind Card” by distributing a plastic card to all attendees. Each card is numbered, so as acts of kindness occur, the community can track each card’s path online at www.bekinddelray. com or by tweeting #bekinddelray. Therefore,

when someone receives an act of kindness accompanied by a numbered card or performs an act and passes the card along, they then go to the easy to use website and make an entry to track it. “This initiative hopes to impact and unify our community, remind residents (and visitors) to pay it forward, highlight the nice things residents do for each other, and most importantly spread kindness around our town,” says Sherman. Alyson Austin, Maclendon’s Practice Manager said becoming a sponsor of the initiative was an easy decision. “When we heard about the YPAD idea of the Kind Cards we knew we had to be the sponsor!” she said. “Maclendon’s motto is – do the right thing – and what better way to inspire that throughout the community. It is fun and exciting to watch this movement spread and there is no better community for this to spark the kindness. A quick tour of the Be Kind website is inspiring. Among the stories shared: • A woman found a wallet on the beach with $400 inside and returned it via Facebook to its owner. • One local resident arranged for a veteran

to get a first class ticket home on Delta airlines. • Someone mentioned leaving a very generous tip for a deserving waitress at Duffy’s and another mentioned that somebody bought him a latte at a Delray Starbucks. JEFFREY COSTELLO The New Director Of The CRA By Diane Feen

You would have to dig pretty deep to find something scandelous about Jeffrey Costello. That’s because the new head of the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency is a straight shooter. He has been so immersed in the planning and zoning side of city development that the first words out of his mouth as a baby must have been “plan.”

After graduating Slipery Rock University in Western Pennsylvania Costello headed South in tandem with his cousin Tom Costello. His first job out of college was for Florida Power & Light on the survey crew in the engineer division. Armed with his degree in Environmental Planning, Costello was a shoe in for anything that involved the environment and its geographical implications. His first job with the city of Delray Beach (where he has lived for 20 years) was called Planning Tech I. “I had an entry level job reviewing permits and zoning issues. I always loved Florida. I was a Dolphin fan before I was a Steelers fan.” Costello’s planning career was only in its infancy in 1988 when he started on this path, but it seems to have suited him perfectly. He rose through the ranks with titles like Planning Tech 1 and II, Planner, Planner ll, Senior Planner, Principal Planner and Assistant Director. Amidst all the title changes and planning duties, in 2005 Costello took a detour and went to work for New Urban Communities as Director of Planning. “I helped guide their projects through the development approval process because I understood the communities and builders interests. I worked out solutions that were mutually beneficial,” said the 51-year-old father of two boys. The private sector did not hold the allure of city work for Costello so after a year and a half he joined the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency as the Assistant Director. It is there that he relished the cameraderie and commerce that mixed doing good with doing the right thing. “I believe we are all working together to enhance and strengthen

the community.” Projects and initiatives that make a difference are high on the priority list for Costello, who grew up in Western Pennsylvania amidst the recession and downturn of the steel industry. No matter how hard his parents had to work to provide for their family Costello remembers the bright spot on the familial horizon. “As a child our family always took a yearly vacation. We would go camping and I would go fishing with my father,” said Costello, who continues that tradition with his children. Perhaps it is this celebration of the outdoors that has rooted Costello firmly in the hot seat for the redevelopment of Delray. Currently there is a lot on the front burner. “Downtown is evolving. There is a lot of redevelopment activity along West Atlantic Avenue as well as improvements proposed in Artists Alley and Osceola Park Business Area, South of Atlantic. We also have plans for renovations to the Arts Warehouse to provide an arts incubator and are implementing other revitalization projects in residential areas.” If you ask those who know Costello they will tell you that the hot seat in the tiny vintage house on North Swinton is exactly where Costello belongs. “Jeff is a dedicated hard working employee of the CRA. He handles business well and is in control of situations at all times. He is professional and knows what he is doing,” said Chairman of the CRA Herman Stevens. Costello takes great pleasure in all the work the CRA has done. He enjoys the diversity of the projects and watching something grow out of the

ground from nothing. But when you boil it down to its lowest commond demonimator there are people whose lives are changed drastically by the CRA. And that is what thrills this mild mannered Executive Director of the CRA. “When you see the impact of redevelopment and beautification on people’s lives it is so rewarding. It’s really why we do this. I also enjoy seeing business owners realize their dreams as well. It’s not easy, but at the end of the day it’s a great professional career.” Costello - and the team at the CRA - is responsible for implementing many projects in various redevelopment plans. Some of these are The Gateway Art Feature Project, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Beautification, Libby Wesley Plaza, Arts Warehouse Project and providing grants to businesses and homeowners. But Costello is not wasting a minute resting on the laurels of past projects. “Our success as a community has been a team effort. It includes a successful partnership with the City and others, but there is much more to do. We are working with homeowner Associations to enhance their neighborhoods and pursuing opportunities in West Atlantic Avenue and commercial areas in the CRA District.” When not planning for city improvements Costello can be found planning activities and enjoying the company of his sons, 13-year-old Jeffrey and 11-year-old Jimmy. They take camping trips, hike at national parks, go to the beach and bike together. When asked which beach they frequent most often Costello looks perplexed. “We go to the beach in Delray, of course.” As a creature of habit it makes sense that Costello would rarely leave his perch on the cutting edge of Delray Beach. Folks like real estate attorney David Schmidt are glad that Costello will continue on this sacred journey of redevelopment and enhancement of Delray. “Jeff has a good vision for the city. He is very down to earth, is easy to work with and is a stickler for details. I have the utmost trust and faith in him that he will rise to every challenge.” His former comrade (and mentor) Diane Colonna has the utmost confidence that Costello is exactly where he belongs. “I can’t think of anyone more qualified than Jeff Costello to serve as the CRA’s Executive Director. He’s got the knowledge, expertise and level of commitment necessary to take the agency to the next level. The board made an excellent choice in promoting Jeff.”

Great restaurants announce themselves quietly yet set the world on fire. Mussel Beach Restaurant has done just that.

This corner restaurant - that opened over a year ago - takes mussels to a new level of sophistication. There are 14 different sauces that saturate the pristine taste of these hand-picked Prince Edward Island mussels. With names like French Onion, Danish Blue, Mariniere and Lobster Bisque there’s a lot to discover when the iron pot comes to your table. One thing for sure, you are in for a savory savvy taste that you probably never associated with the word “mussels.” And for good reason. These mussels are tender, tasty and have a soup like sauce for dipping and crooning over. There’s no need to cover up the fresh tangy flavor of these mussels with bread or starch of any kind. The reason is that they are divine in their most naked form. That is exactly the reason owner Mark Mezzancello opened his beach- themed res-

taurant in downtown Delray Beach. “When I moved down to Florida I could not find a seafood restaurant that had shellfish and fresh caught fish that was reasonably priced.” Mezzancello has owned restaurants (and a catering hall) in the past, but they were in New York. After a trip to France with his daughter Brittany, Mezzancello had a lightbulb moment. “When I took my daughter to France we saw all these mussel and French fries restaurants. It was such a big trend over there I thought it would be great to have something like that in South Florida.” So Mezzancello and his wife Patti did just that. They took their inspiration from their French experience, but broadened the choice of offerings. They did this by adding fresh fish – Grouper, Salmon, Cod, Mahi Mahi and Swordfish - with a variety of indulgent breading and sauces. If you want to enrich your

senses try salmon in a sweet potato crust with pan fried snow peas and carrots. This dish comes with wild rice pilaf and is served in a jalapeno aioli sauce. If you opt for the Pretzel cod or Mahi-Mahi you’ll also get homemade mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables in a Dijon dill cream. There is also nut crusted fish, sweet BBQ Rubbed fish or Oscar (which is jumbo lump crab cake, asparagus and hollandaise). The best part of this experience is that the food is excellent beyond expectation. And there’s a reason why. “The sauces on the fish and some of the recipes belonged to my great grandmother 150 years ago. Nothing here is out of a can or frozen, it’s all made fresh right here,” said Mezzancello, whose blue eyes match the theme of this family-owned and operated restaurant. Although Mark is often in the kitchen he keeps an eye out for guests and the pulse of the restaurant. Patti, on the other hand, is often out front seating guests and making sure all is well. soup I ever had in France,” said Arnie Marcus. Good news for Mezzancello, who had his heart set on taking tradition and melding it with current revelation. He wanted a great restaurant that served fresh seafood for reasonable prices with flavors that wowed his customers. And wow is a reality at this corner hot spot with the drop pendant lighting, ocean mural and comfortable booths that will make you wonder, “Do I ever have to leave?” Well, the answer is probably yes. But you won’t want to leave for a while because of their specialty martinis that will seduce your senses and your taste buds. Served chilled to your table their Melon Martini is something to savor with Grey Goose LeMelon, Fresh muddled cantaloupe pieces, lime sour garnished with Cantaloupe. The Strawberry Basil Cooler is amazing as well with Stolichnaya vodka, fresh raspberries and fresh lime sour. There are other exotic martinis that match wisdom with taste and a selection of bottled beer. There’s a lot more to this Mussel beach res-

taurant though. They serve truffle fries in a miniature basket and hearty salads. Their Blue Crab Salad is excellent and The Mandarin Salad brings new life to the word salad with shrimp and chicken with vegetables. They also have a Sweet BBQ Salmon salad and Scallop Salad. There is also cauliflower creamed spinach, burgers and a lobster BLT (which has its own loyal following). Although this huge menu has something for everyone (all fresh from land or sea) their fried doughnuts will leave you begging for more. Served piping hot with amaretto, cinnamon, sugar and a crème anglaise sauce, you will be engulfed in ecstasy (the culinary type). If you opt for mussels, and we highly suggest you do, be prepared to swoon. Mezzancello has them handpicked in Prince Edward Island just for him. And you can taste the difference. “The mussels here are wonderful. I had the Posillipo mussels made with fresh tomatoes, garlic, onion and white wine. We also had the truffle fries and bloody Marys with clam juice. I love it here, I will definitely be coming back,” said Sandra Bernstein, who brought her friend Maureen Hocker. There is so much to love about this place – the food is fantastic, the atmosphere is comfy and the service is perfect. Their new chef (Charles) takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary with sauces that are divine. Our hats are off to the Mezzancello family (his great grandmother) and their wonderful staff. Season chicken with Montreal seasoning, Kosher salt and pepper. In an oven safe skillet, over medium heat, add 3 Tbsp of olive oil. Sear both sides of the chicken. Place skillet in the oven until the chicken temperature reaches 155 degrees. Melt 3 Tbsp of butter in a saute pan. Add onions, shallots, parsley and mushrooms. Cook until tender, then flambe with Irish whiskey. Add 2 cups of heavy cream, reduce them temperature to simmer. Serve with homemade mashed potatoes and steamed buttered vegetables.

hen it comes to spay and neuter, there are often huge debates surrounding the necessity and the potential consequences from this type of surgery. Proponents will tell you it is the responsible course for all pet owners to do this because there are so many pets already in Rescues waiting to be adopted. They will also tell you how cancer can be prevented by doing this and even make the pet more trainable. For the most part, this is all false. First we must observe the risks of surgery itself. All surgery is dangerous and far from routine. Problems with anesthesia, infection, improper healing, drug reactions and interaction and a surgeon’s misstep can cause a lifetime of suffering and even death. Now let’s look at the removal of necessary body parts. In spay and neuter, the organs removed are not only reproductive organs, but also the body’s factory for producing a plethora of enzymes, co-enzymes, and hormones. When they are removed, it basically affects every cell in the body. Normal, natural body

functions are forever disrupted. In fact the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine states that normal spay and neuter cuts an animals’ life in half. The cancer connection is complex. While the removal of these organs eliminates the threat of testicular or ovarian cancer, it does not work as a cancer preventative. In fact, just the opposite is true. Research shows an increase in most other cancers. Breast cancer risk is up 50%, the risk of Osteosarcoma, a deadly bone cancer is doubled. Mineral imbalance caused by the lost and changed hormones, increases the risk of most other cancers as well. New studies are showing a direct link to hip and joint issues including hip dysplasia and other bone and joint disorders. An example of that is cited here; Whitehair et al (JAVMA Oct 1993), found that spayed and neutered dogs were twice as likely to suffer cranial cruciate ligament rupture. You may also notice that this information has been known to veterinarians and their schools since 1993. Why do they ignore their own industry’s findings?

My question is this, “What is a responsible course for a pet owner to follow when the risk factors are so wide and great?” This is an elective surgery that is basically detrimental to the health of pets. If it is only providing a convenience for pet owners and preventing unwanted pregnancies, shouldn’t we be doing a better job at educating in the area of responsible pet health care? Shouldn’t the decision be left up to the owner since the owner of these altered animals will ultimately be responsible for literally tens of thousands of dollars in veterinary expenses over the pet’s lifetime while never being told that these procedures have been one of the direct causes for numerous health issues. The key is to educate yourself on pet health and behavior before making any rash decisions for your furry babies. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “WHO KNEW GREY CAME IN SO MANY SHADES” If you haven’t heard of the trilogy, “Fifty Shades of Grey”, you might just be living under a rock. On February 13th, this erotic page turner goes Hollywood where Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele bound off the written page on to the silver screen. Now if only real life dating could be more like their steamy fairytale….. TESSA: Tessa met Aron on a dating site and they spoke via phone and text. Unable to meet in person until the week of New Years, Tessa stepped outside of her comfort zone and invited Aron and his friend to a NYE party hosted at a close friend’s home. Feeling safe amongst her best friends, Tessa figured she could meet Aron in historic blind date fashion, but in a more comfortable/safe environment. Aron happily accepted the invitation and Tessa was cautiously optimistic. On Jan 30th, they exchanged texts about the party plans. Aron’s friend decided not to attend but Aron still planned to drive the forty minutes north to meet Tessa. As we all know many times, text conveys a very different message. The next text was the game changer. “I will meet you at the party solo, but I will go home with you.” Presumptuous, anyone? Shocked by his candor, she texted back that she had no intention of allowing him to go home with her that night as they were only meeting for the first time. When he texted her back “YOU NEED TO RELAX”, she called him and calmly told him that she was fairly put off by his forwardness. He went on to tell her that she was “Crazy” like the others and that he had no intention of taking her back to her house to “blank her”. Tessa apologized for misinterpreting his text but an apology never came from Aron. He rambled on that Tessa was “making drama for nothing” and that he didn’t need to “obey and/or agree with her”. Fifty shades of annoyed, Tessa told Aron that she thought it best that he didn’t accompany her to the party and that they should never meet. With her ever classy flair, she bid him adieu. “You have

to kiss a lot of frogs, before you find your prince.”- Anastasia Steele HARPER: Out and about on the “Avenue”, Harper and her girlfriends made the most of the evening. Along the way, they ran into a group of friends and before long, the group doubled and tripled in size. There was one stand out, a nice guy who she had never met before. After striking up a conversation, Dalton seemed interesting. Throughout the night, there was obvious chemistry and the two found themselves engaged in close conversation and even closer on the dance floor. The night ended with Dalton asking for her number and tentative group plans for a few nights later. Dalton texted two days later and they did meet up again for a night of dancing, conversation and good old fashioned fun. (And just for the record, Harper had no intention of their meeting going beyond a couple of fun nights out.) At some point late in the evening, Harper lost track of Dalton and sent a “good night”

text. And like it always ends, no response. She followed up with a variation of “Its bad form to bail without saying goodnight.” The following morning she received this text from Dalton: “I didn’t mean to leave without saying good-bye. Sorry if there is any miscommunication or misunderstanding. Sometimes my personality can be a little flirty. You are a really awesome person and I was hoping we can be friends.” Presumptuous-yet again! “Never trust a man who can dance.”- Anastasia Steele There is no rhyme or reason for the level of bad social form. Even if these men were as sensational as Mr. Grey himself, there really lies no proper excuse for bad behavior or presumption. Perhaps if one of them had a helicopter (Charlie Tango) or the class, money and sophistication of Christian, some disrespect can be mildly overlooked. There was no “Dominant/ Submissive Contract” that Tessa agreed to and Harper didn’t have to visit the “Red Room of Pain” to have mental anguish inflicted. Both ladies just got stuck with two men who appear to both be semi-delusional and the true definition of “players.” Dating is definitely no fantasyland like the trilogy. There are several people out there, both men and women alike, that clearly are “Fifty shades of F-ed up”. But don’t give up hope; like Tessa, Harper and myself, there are still a handful of fabulous ladies out there ready for “hearts and flowers.” There are also many great undiscovered men who can make a “palm twitch.” May this Valentine’s Day bring you Fifty Shades of RED! “Laters, Baby!” Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to shine a light on people whose work you admire

In that spirit, I’d like to give Valentine shout outs to several extraordinary people who are doing amazing work in Delray Beach. I hope reading about them inspires you to get involved in their causes or your own.

In no particular order: Last month, we bid farewell to an extraordinary public servant who retired after 29 years in Delray. Lula Butler is a major reason why Delray Beach was twice named an All America City. Aside from a warehouse full of awards and commendations including being named Florida League of Cities Employee of the Year for all of Florida, Lula touched a number of lives over her decades with the city. She enjoyed a broad portfolio that included building, code enforcement, signage, occupational licensing, race relations, education and neighborhood engagement. When I served as mayor, I called her office the “hub” and it was the first place I stopped whenever I visited City Hall because Lula had her pulse on the community. We wish her and husband Len the best of health and happiness in retirement. Sandra Dezelan has a heart the size of Florida. She is the dynamo behind Dezzy’s Second Chance Rescue, a local non-profit that rescues pets and finds them forever homes so they can rescue us. You can find Sandra every Saturday at The GreenMarket hoping to find loving homes for her beloved animals. Passionate, energetic and

driven, Sandra has given everything for her cause devoting just about every waking hour to the plight of the abandoned. Janet Meeks is another passionate crusader for education in Delray because she believes the only way to break the cycle of poverty is through better schools. As the city’s Education Coordinator, Janet advocates for programs and facilities that can give our kids the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. We are fortunate to have Janet in Delray Beach. February is an appropriate month to send a Valentine to Stephanie Immelman, the director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. Thanks to Stephanie and her small, hardworking team, we just celebrated a magnificent holiday season entertaining people of all ages from all four corners of the Earth. And it all went off without a hitch, including terrific tree lighting. Stephanie is a treasure and next year that bad holiday sweater world record is going to fall. The Young Professionals Association of Delray and Kilburn Sherman of MacLendon Wealth Management deserve a Valentine for their #BeKindDelray campaign encouraging

random acts of kindness. In a world, where too often, our default mode is anger and hate it is encouraging to see young professionals working hard to make Delray a kinder place. Speaking of kind and generous, Mark Sauer founder of Delray Student First deserves a Valentine’s Day pat on the back for his work with some of our most vulnerable youth. Mark, a retired executive and all around cool guy, could be basking in the sun but instead he’s devoted his life to creating opportunities for kids. He is an inspiration. A Valentine’s thanks also goes to Michael Diamant and Father Andrew Sherman both of whom recently completed their terms as president and vice president of Family Promise of South Palm Beach County. This incredible organization helps puts families back on their feet with an array of services. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day think of these people and so many more paying it forward in Delray Beach.
