rom the staff and contributors of Atlantic Ave Magazine to you, we wish you a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year. We are hoping that 2016 brings the world peace. Outside of our little world here in Delray Beach, the global picture has been murky. Terrorism, violence, fear, hatred and intolerance seem to be on the rise. It is our wish that we begin to make a dent in those issues and more in 2016. We are also hoping that here at home we take some time to express gratitude for living in a very nice place but also realize that our hometown is not immune to problems and that people in our community struggle too. End of year giving is a ritual in America for a variety of reasons. It is said that nationwide, $1 billion a day is donated in the month of December to charities. But the needs are year round and they are local. Please consider getting involved in 2016, Delray Beach needs you. With the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino still weighing heavily on our hearts and minds, we thought it was appropriate to share some good news. There’s a lot to celebrate these days. Here are a few items to smile about. • The team at Spodak Dental has teamed up with Marlins great Giancarlo Stanton to bring dental care to kids in need. Stanton discovered the Spodak magic when he received care from the team after devastating injury caused by being hit in the face with a pitch. He was so taken with the team’s culture that he joined forces with Dr. Craig to bring smiles to the faces of children. It’s a heartwarming story. • Coach T.J. Jackson and his staff and players at Atlantic High are to be commended for a great football season. The team’s play restored pride to the program and got the community pumped up about high school football again. Kudos to boosters Lee Cohen and Ryan Boylston for their behind the scenes support of the team. • It is wonderful to see key agencies in Delray Beach collaborating again. Under the moniker Team Delray, the city’s alphabet soup of agencies is back to doing what Delray does best: working together on common goals and challenges. Collaboration is Delray’s secret sauce. Our community hashtag ought to be #let’smakeitwork. And there’s more, much more. That is why Atlantic Avenue magazine exists…to shine a spotlight on our great town, it’s people and its businesses. New Board Member for CROS Ministries- Dr. John Conde

In November of 2015, Dr. John Conde of The Conde Center For Chiropractic Neurology was accepted as one of the newest Board Members for CROS Ministries. He is humbled to be able to contribute to such a compassionate nonprofit organization. As a Delray Beach local, Dr. Conde has been privileged to view the growth and assistance that CROS Ministries has been able to provide our local community. He is thrilled to now be able to provide his insight and expertise to assist this thriving non-profit organization in their continued expansion to support both Palm Beach and Martin counties. Since 1978, CROS Ministries has provided services in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Our mission is to serve the hungry in Palm Beach and Martin Counties through community collaborations. Our programs strive to enhance the quality of life of people living in targeted low-income communities where we work with diverse populations providing services that help people achieve sustainability. In Delray Beach, we provide short-term food assistance at our pantry located at Delray Beach’s Neighborhood Resource Center. At the Caring Kitchen, we serve meals, after school snacks to three Delray Beach after school programs, and provide basic needs assistance such as help obtaining birth certificates, personal identification, and referrals to other community resources when our patrons’ needs are beyond our scope of services. Additionally, we distribute weekend bags of food to children at Pine Grove Elementary during the school year. In addition, CROS Ministries operates five more community food pantries in Palm Beach County and one in Martin County, summer camps, after school snack programs, and gleaning, a food recover program. All services are provided without regard to race, religion, national origin, marital status, gender, disability, sexual

2016 Senior Games Take Place in Delray Beach
The Delray Beach Senior Games are being held January 29 - February 5, 2016. The events are open to seniors 50 years of age or older. It’s a week of competition, fun and fitness. Swimming, Pickleball, Basketball Shooting, Track and Field, Golf, Billiards, Croquet, Archery and Bowling are offered. The sports are arranged by age within each category. Over 200 participants are expected for these activities. Seniors are the fastest growing age group. Ten thousand baby boomers are turning 65 each day. “Many of us are physically active and participate in various sports or activities,” Josh Kalin, Pickleball Ambassador, stated. Harriet Kalin and hundreds of others are avid Pickleball players. Billiards are a top priority for Mike Turturro in the Senior Games. Essie Faria participates in Track and Field and Pickleball.
Finishing in the top five positions in your age group, qualifies for the Florida Senior Games State Championship held in December, 2016. Everyone is encouraged to watch the activities. Track and Field will be held at Atlantic High School. Pickleball is played indoors at Pompey Park Community Center and golf is at Delray Municipal Golf Course. Healing Through Expressive Arts - HEArt
The annual HEArt Show (Healing Through Expressive Arts), will be held on Friday, February 6, 2016 at 7pm at FAU’s Memory and Wellness Center. This year’s beneficiary will be Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, which help patients and their caregivers to cope with the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and other complex memory disorders. On November 23rd, MISSION UNITED held “Operation Turkey Dinner” and distributed more than 175 Thanksgiving dinner baskets to Broward County military veterans. Each basket, valued at $65 and served a family of four to five, had turkeys donated by Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale and all the trimmings including stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, Hawaiian rolls, canned pumpkin, canned yams, jarred gravy, canned cranberries, canned green beans, canned corn, chicken broth, marshmallows, apple or cranberry juice, turkey pan, baster and aluminum foil that were donated by 15th Street Fisheries. The baskets were distributed to veterans “drive thru” style at United Way of Broward County’s parking lot. MISSION UNITED is a community-based initiative convening and aligning public and

U.S. Military Veterans Get Christmas Gift to Help with Healing
Two U.S. military veterans recieved a Christmas present that could help change their lives for the better. On December 18, in Fort Pierce, they received a service dog that has been trained just for them, and may help them with healing and recovering from combat situations. The dogs have been trained by a nonprofit organization called Paws of War, and were given to the veterans free of charge. “This is what we do,” explains Lauren Driscoll, a trainer for Paws of War. “Trained service dogs have been proven to help our veterans with everything from post-traumatic stress disorder to anxiety, so we are pleased to be able to help two more veter-

ans this holiday season.” The two veterans who received the dogs are Derek Montgomery and Jason Brown. Derek is a resident of St. Louis and served in the Marine Corps. He was deployed to Afghanistan with the 2nd Marine division, with a small team of Marines to support the Republic of Georgia in their combat operations. Jason lives in Fort Pierce, Fla. He spent 14 years in the military, serving in the Army National Guard and active duty, until his retirement in 2014. “While we try to help veterans all year long, it’s especially nice to be able to help them at Christmas,” says Robert Misseri, president of Paws of War. “Their new service dog can be a major step in the right direction in terms of therapy and healing.” Both dogs were rescues from Dogs and Cats Forever, a no-kill animal shelter located in Fort Pierce. Driscoll has successfully trained 12 dogs prior to the two being paired up with the veterans this month. She is the owner of Pet Peeves Dog Training Florida, and volunteers her time for the Paws of War organization. Paws of War is an all volunteer organization that provides assistance to military members and their pets, and provides service and therapy dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD. The GFWC Woman’s Club of Delray Beach, which supports a variety of nonprofit organizations in the community, recently elected its new slate of officers for the 2016 year. Serving as co-presidents for the upcoming year are Joann Haros and Trish Jacobson. Mal Bates was elected first vice-president and Mary Ann Volpe was selected as second vice-president. Mary Reis will serve as recording secretary, Janice Stern was elected corresponding secretary and Flo Lafevre will serve as treasurer. The new board was installed during a ceremony led by Linda Ferris, past GFWC District 10 director, now a member of the GFWC West Palm Beach Woman’s Club. “We’re excited to have a very strong new board leading the organization,” said Haros, who is returning as co-president. “Our new officers are all committed to seeing our organization succeed and to our community.” This year, members chose to purchase and donate books for Orchard View Elementary School, rather than hold an an-
nual gift exchange. In addition, members also purchased and sorted sweets that were delivered to seniors in Abbey Delray. “Our organization has continued to grow over the last few years and we’re now able to do more for our community,” Jacobson said. “Our members enjoy being an important part of Delray Beach and are proud to support our schools, our libraries and other organizations.” Much of the funding for the club’s charitable giving comes from “Real Men Bake” the organization’s annual fundraiser. This year, the April 15 event will be the “Real Men Bake and Rock at the Sock Hop,” which will be held in the historic gymnasium at Old School Square. Santa made his way to Delray Beach in his BMW convertible to spread joy to thousands of children despite the event being rescheduled due to weather. The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) managed to pull off yet another successful Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony after having to move the event back a week because of December rains. “We were hoping to still draw a great crowd for the rain date, and sure enough they showed up,” said Stephanie Immelman, Director of the DBMC. The excitement for Santa and the start of the Delray Beach Christmas season was not diminished, and droves of jubilant children and festive onlookers made their way out to Old School Square to enjoy the night. he only reason I go to the movies is the popcorn. It’s always perfectly popped, intensely buttery and now the theaters even have a white cheddar seasoning, as if movie-going could get any better! Boca West Community Charitable Foundation and Boys & Girls Club Make Holiday Dreams Come True
Saturday December 12th was the Sixth annual holiday shopping spree for 200 area kids age 6 to 16, at Old Navy, Shadowwood Square, Glades Rd in Boca Raton. Each child received $50 to purchase clothing in the store for themselves. Old Navy provided a
10% discount for the children. After shopping, the kids were taken by bus to Boca West Country Club where they enjoyed a “Minions” themed breakfast and activities. Each child returned home with a toy from Santa, as well as a food basket filled with a turkey, a ham, fresh vegetables and all the fixings for a holiday meal.

Let us warn you up front this movie is three hours, ten minutes long and it is shown with an intermission. If you are OK with that, you may enjoy this complicated yarn about bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who are aboard a stagecoach through Wyoming in the post-Civil War years bound for the town of Red Rock. Along the way they encounter fellow bounty hunter Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a Southern renegade who claims to be the new Sheriff. A snowstorm forces them to hole

Teenaged Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Moretz) survives, but her brother has gone missing and the boy helping her find him may be an alien in disguise. The script by Susannah Grant is based on a young adult novel by Richard Yancey. Nick Robinson, Alex Roe, Maiko Monroe, Maggie Siff and Maria Bello co-star. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube ride again under the direction of Tim Story in the sequel “Ride Along 2,” which continues the misadventures of the mismatched Atlanta cop duo. Also featured are Olivia Munn, Ken Jeong, Glen Powell and Benjamin Bratt. Ah those developers will plunder anywhere there is a buck to be made. “Norm of the North” is a computer-animated comedy about a polar bear (voice of Zachary Graham as a cub, Rob Schneider as an adult) who discovers developers plan to build condos in his native Arctic habitat. So Norm goes to New York City with his cute lemming sidekicks to confront the greedy despoilers.

January 22 Robert De Niro is “Dirty Grandpa.” Perhaps that’s all you need to know about this raunchy comedy written by John Phillips (“Bad Santa 2.”). OK, Zac Efron is his grandson Jason Kelly, who is set to marry Meredith (Julianne Hough), his boss’s uber-controlling daughter. Grandpa Dick (De Niro) has other ideas, and tricks Jason into driving him to Daytona and the party of his life. Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch and Dermot Mulroney co-star. “The Boy” is not your normal kid. For one thing he is a life-sized porcelain doll resembling an 8-year-old boy. American girl Greta (Lauren Cohan) accepts a job with Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire, a rich, elderly British couple who are going on an extended holiday and want someone to be nanny for their “son” Brahms. They leave a list of strict rules that must not be broken or something terrible will happen. When Greta inadvertently breaks a few rules, she enlists the help of a grocery delivery man (Javier Botet) to combat whatever evil forces are threatening her. January 29 It’s a spoof, in case you are wondering. In “Fifty Shades of Black” Marlon Wayans co-wrote and stars as Mr. Black, a rich man who tries to dominate his girlfriend (Kali Hawk), with mixed results. Mike Epps, Fred Willard, Affion Crockett and Jane Seymour round out the cast, directed by Mike Tiddes (“Haunted House 2”). Those nor’easters can really get brutal. If you doubt it, watch “The Finest Hours,” about the true-life February 18, 1952 storm that struck New England and wreaked havoc, including the literal ripping in half of an oil tanker named SS Pendleton, bound for Boston. Thirty men were trapped in the sinking stern half of the ship. First Assistant Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) took charge, contacting the Coast Guard base in Chatham, Mass. Capt. Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) launched a daring rescue mission in a wooden lifeboat with an underpowered engine fighting frigid temperatures, hurricane-force winds and 60-foot waves. Dear Friend, I’ve got to tell you something I’ve never said out loud. But, what I’m going to tell you makes so much sense that you’ll probably get mad that no one told you this before. I’ve been a doctor in this town for 3 years. And, to this day, I’ve never cured anyone. You may think the word would get around and no one would come to me anymore. The opposite is true. 1,100 miles away lies an American tropical getaway. The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly the Danish West Indies were sold to the U.S. by Denmark in 1916. They are currently an organized, unincorporated United States territory in the Caribbean, therefore requiring no passport to travel.
The islands consist of three main islands; Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, along with many other surrounding smaller islands. Traveling to St. Thomas or St. Croix is not as expensive as you might think. Spirit Airlines offer direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas for about $200 round trip or American Airlines from Miami for about $300. With a steady temperature averaging 80 degrees and white sandy beaches on turquoise blue water, the USVI are a place not to be missed. Each of the islands is unique. St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the three, giving the feeling that it’s the largest; it’s not, St. Croix is, although it is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas offers its visitors a huge array of attractions from churches, museums, classic island architecture and shopping. Exploring Cutting Edge Treatments and Addressing Misconceptions

A shocking 80 % of all Americans will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Its epidemic status continues to grow and sufferers seek the most cutting edge approaches to not only ensuring relief but also restoring function.
Quite often individuals may also develop associated thigh or lower leg pain termed sciatica. The clinical term sciatica requires clarification. Sciatica simply means “pain in the leg”. It does not mean that the sciatic nerve has been “pinched”. In fact, the sciatic nerve is not involved in most cases of thigh or gluteal pain because it does not supply sensation from this area.
What Is The Cause Of Sciatica? Sciatica can be caused by irritation or trauma to nerve roots within the spinal canal or to peripheral nerves outside of the canal anywhere from the pelvis to the lower leg. Space occupying lesions within the spinal canal such as a bone spur, disc herniation, congenitally narrow canal, infection, metastasis, or mass can be the causative agent. Outside of the canal we find the instigators to be a femur head fracture, incorrectly placed intra-muscular injection, fixation of the sacroiliac joint, and primary bone cancer of the pelvis. The two most common and least diagnosed causes are facet joint syndrome and piriformis contracture. Facet joints help to guide motion of the spine letting us bend forward and back and side to side. They also relieve some of the weight bearing burden of the rest of the spine. Quite often they are irritated due to an injury, arthritis, or misalignment. This irritation produces referred pain into the gluteal region and back of the thigh. 60 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Piriformis contracture occurs when the piriformis muscle tightens and shortens for a prolonged period of time compressing peripheral nerves that provide sensation from the gluteal region and thigh. The tightening can occur due to repetitive use such as is seen in runners and tennis players, injury, and misalignment of the pelvis. The pain pattern is typically represented as severe buttock pain and mild thigh pain.
How Is It Diagnosed? A comprehensive neurological and orthopedic examination should be performed checking reflexes, strength, sensation, posture, gait, muscle tone, and evaluating pain production from different positions. X-rays help to narrow down the diagnosis. Further imaging studies such as MRI and CT should only be necessary after a lack of improvement from conservative treatment or a progression of symptoms.
Cutting Edge, Conservative Treatments The treatment of sciatica is aimed at removing the cause and restoring proper function to the area. Cutting edge maneuvers such as eccentric fast stretching and cross cord inhibition focus on reducing tension in tightened and shortened muscle and joint capsules. You’ve lost a tooth – now what?

Dental implants - a popular for missing or failing teeth.
Tooth loss is a common problem that you have a good chance of experiencing at some point in your life, unfortunately. Whether you lose a tooth from cavities, severe gum disease, accidental damage or other reasons, the loss of a single tooth or multiple teeth can have dramatic and lasting effects on your smile and your ability to chew if not dealt with in a timely manner. Without replacing the tooth, your smile could look unsightly or crooked, in addition to creating further problems for the future. Teeth adjacent to a space where a tooth has been lost often tend to shift or move into that space. This movement leads to further instability among neighboring teeth, and soon enough your bite will suffer because the teeth have become misaligned. Additionally, teeth in the opposing jaw will often begin to “grow” further up or down as it looks to make contact with a neighboring tooth. If no tooth is encountered, the gum tissue in the area of the lost tooth may become the surrogate, which is a match that can lead to constant discomfort or a persistent sore spot. To make matters worse, the jawbone where the root of the missing tooth used to sit is no longer stimulated during chewing, and it will shrink away in a process known as “resorption.” Once jawbone density is lost, it’s difficult to regain, regardless if you undergo sophisticated bone grafting techniques. So what do you do when you lose a tooth? Replace it! There are a few different options for replacing missing teeth – including a fixed bridge or removable partial denture – but the best solution for managing gum tissue architecture, jawbone strength and aesthetics is dental implants. The most common option in dentistry for tooth replacement used to be a “fixed bridge,” which is when the teeth on either side of the space were shaved down and a dental 64 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
bridge that had a fake tooth in the middle was cemented over them. This addressed the problem of teeth shifting, as well as keeping aesthetics in line. However, because chewing forces would now be distributed to the bone of the neighboring teeth, the resorption process would often continue and, over time, create a defect in the bone and gums in that area. For those who are missing the majority or all of their teeth, or who didn’t opt for the fixed bridge, removable partial or full dentures are another option. This, unfortunately, still does not solve the problem of lost roots and bone resorption. Dentures also tend to be uncomfortable and also make it difficult to speak or chew effectively, not to mention smiling with confidence! Most dental professionals would agree that replacing a missing (or soon to be missing) tooth or teeth with dental implant supported crowns or bridges is the best option. A dental implant is like an artificial tooth implanted in the jawbone that is capable of supporting one or more teeth. You no longer need to rely on neighboring teeth to support either a fixed or a removable bridge, or alter perfectly healthy teeth to accommodate the replacement of one, and implants help to preserve the strength of the underlying jawbone. So how do you know you might need a dental implant? If you have lingering, unprovoked (not in response to eating or drinking) pain, it’s possible your tooth may need to be removed and replaced with a dental implant. In some cases, a dental implant can be surgically inserted the same day the offending tooth is removed. This is known as “immediate implant placement” and a temporary crown can sometimes be attached to the implant so the patient never has to have a gap in their smile. In situations where there is considerable bone loss around the failing tooth root or
you’ve suffered a traumatic injury, “delayed implant placement” is the best option. In these instances, it’s common to have a bone graft at the site of the extracted tooth to help rebuild the volume of the bone that’s needed for future implant placement. This could occur a few months later, after the bone graft has healed, but many times a temporary device can be worn until the implant crown is placed so your smile stays intact. Regardless of the cause, replacing missing or failing teeth with dental implants as early as possible will give you the best chance for a successful and aesthetically-pleasing outcome. You want to reduce or eliminate the risk of having teeth shift, which will help to avoid future dental problems and keep you smiling straight! Feeling a little fluffy from the holiday overload? Wondering about where to start on those New Year’s Resolutions? Don’t worry, I can assure you’re not pondering this one alone. Holiday parties, workplace cookies and extra cocktails can all leave you feeling thick, sluggish and unmotivated. However, if you take note and follow these pointers, better in no time!
The first and most important component of getting back on track is to have a “fitness” plan and to set a goal for yourself. Setting a fitness plan could be as simple as saying you’re going to get to the gym 3x per week. It’s all about mapping out where you are going and what you are going to do in order to achieve your goal. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. Next order of business would be for you to get your eating in check! I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming…the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. A successful food log would ideally consist of 5-6 meals per day spaced 2-3 hours apart with a proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes, with preparation and thought…you can do it!). The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. Aim for 1oz of water per pound of bodyweight. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full, flush 66 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
out toxins and help de-bloat you faster than you may realize. So get out that gallon and start your chuggin! The last step to de-fluffing is performing the right type of workouts for YOUR body. However, regardless of your body type resistance training has to be done…period. Resistance training is essential to fat burning and your metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. Ladies, I promise you don’t have to look like she-man to get the same affects nor will you get bulky from resistance training. It gives your body the “shape” most are looking to achieve. A lot of people think cardio alone will do this and that is the furthest thing from the truth. Although cardio has its time and place… resistance training is non-negotiable. You should aim to get in 3-4 sessions a week for optimal results. As far as cardio goes that will all depend on your fat loss goals. Consult with a training professional if you need clarification on which type of program would work best for you. If you follow these three principles you should be able to shed some holiday pounds and be able to start the New Year off on your best foot forward. My last piece of advice, don’t do the old…”I’ll start on Monday!” There is no better time to start than now! Come up with a plan, set a goal, clean up your eating, pick up some weights and get moving! You’ll be glad you did.

It’s a New Year tradition at Atlantic Ave Magazine to offer up new ideas for a new year.
The ideas are offered up in the spirit of creativity and with the hope that city leadership may act on a few, or at least get out of the way and encourage others to give it a try. We gather them throughout the year in a little notebook. Some of the ideas are our own, others come from our travels or from readers and friends. Enjoy and send us your thoughts. 1. Invest in the park surrounding Old School Square. The vision of a vibrant, well-designed and lightly programmed park was contained in the 2005 Parks Master Plan. It’s time we make it happen. Old School Square Park is our town square. It’s an investment in placemaking and primarily a landscape design project. Put the daggers away, engage the community in the design and make it magical.
2. Mix entrepreneurial start -ups with art at the Arts Warehouse. The CRA made a great move to grab the warehouse and it helped to spur Artist’s Alley. But it’s time to make something happen inside the warehouse and mixing art and entrepreneurs would make this project different and bring new businesses downtown. would benefit from the exposure to artists and vice versa.
3. Consider a density bonus for work force housing downtown. The success of downtown Delray Beach is something to be proud of, but it has also priced many young professionals out of the market and that’s not cool or desirable. We need young professionals, those returning home after college and millennials to make keep our downtown fresh and to support local merchants year round. The new Land Development Regulations cap density at 30; that’s not enough to get any affordability in a red hot market. A promised bonus program seems to have been lost. Bring it back. 4. Make Congress Avenue a complete street. Experience shows us that once you invest in placemaking by calming traffic and designing places for people not just cars, investment, vibrancy and sustainability results. Just look at Atlantic Avenue and US 1. Congress can and should be Delray’s next great street. A complete street means landscaping, bike lanes, transit stops and pedestrian elements.
5. Support Saltwater Village. The Brewery can be the anchor of a cool artsy little nook. It can also be a catalyst for an expansion of charm to key neighborhoods outside the downtown area. 6. Review special event policies. Quality over quantity, for sure, but don’t put events out of business. They are important to the brand and to the community. The brand creates value--it’s why we see real estate listings in Boynton Beach reference the proximity to downtown Delray. 7. Commit to resilience. Make the city safe in what has become a very unpredictable world. Have the conversation.
8. Take another look at three year terms. Good candidates shouldn’t fear the two year term, but three years is too long to be stuck with a clunker. Longer terms don’t save money if you have the wrong people in office and it seems it doesn’t tamp down the politics either.
9. Bring back a real town hall meeting.
10. Create a Community Chest to fund worthy causes. 11. Crowd fund community projects. Use apps to fund small projects. Call it tactical urbanism or urban architecture, but you shouldn’t have to wait for government. 12. Bring a university downtown; even if it’s only for night classes.
13. Offer a Code Camp for kids. 14. Create a reasonable approval process. Weeks long. Not months and years long. Time is money for the investor and the city. Don’t allow the process to become insulting to applicants. Debate has a place. Then it’s time to get on with it.
15. Create a few car free days downtown. Not for special events but just for the experience. Allow golf carts, bikes and the trolley only.
16. Create a local StoryCorps. Capture the history before it’s forgotten. Historic preservation is more than just saving old buildings, it’s capturing and sharing the stories of our community.
17. Go back to the lecture series, review the highlights and actually implement the ideas brought here by thought leaders.
18. Bring back neighborhood pot luck dinners. A village becomes a village when people know each other. 19. Create a plan for economic development. Stick to it.
20. Have a community vision plan that talks about future generations and how we keep Delray sustainable.
21. Back Mark Baron’s vision for the stadium which calls for improvements to seating and world class facilities. 22. Create a talent bank for citizens interested in volunteering. Match those volunteers to the tremendous needs of our community. 23. Make Delray the plein air art capital of America. 24. Pitch a reality TV series featuring Delray.

Let’s face it we’re living in a fast paced world. And in order to keep up we have to be nimble on our feet and minimalistic in our thinking.
It also helps to add exercise to a day that may consist of answering 200 emails, working 10-hours and then cooking dinner for the family. Annie Burke learned about the value of physical fitness when she was just a teen. After spending much of her life in foster homes Burke was 65 pounds overweight to qualify for a job as a police officer in Delray. Instead of walking away defeated she did a quick assessment of the situation and came up with a solution. “I knew I had to lose 65 pounds so I started running one block at a time. After seven months I was running five miles a day and it changed my life. I was accepted into the Police Academy in 1986.” Burke eventually broke the glass ceiling to become a Police Captain in the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department. But she never lost her desire to come up with solutions to help people with problems they couldn’t solve themselves. She just does it in a different way now. You could say her approach is more grounded and better suited for people of all ages and

career pursuits. Tall or short, introverts or extraverts, Burke helps everyone meet their ideal physical and mental state by supplying them with state-of-the-art running (or walking) shoes and all the equipment needed to run a marathon or chase a two-year-old. She started this lofty pursuit over a year ago on Atlantic Avenue by opening a popular, yet folksy running store called The Delray Beach Running Company. It is at this landmark building that one can get their gait checked on a treadmill with software called TEMPLO. This action packed experience will analyze your gait and make sure you get the right size (or model) shoe for running or walking.

But it’s not always about commerce at this intimate shop that’s a safe port in the storm of life. “It’s all about the customer here. I will spend hours with people showing them proper running form and they don’t need to buy anything. We care about our customers here.” You can bank on that. Burke gets phone calls, emails and Facebook messages that attest to her patience with clients to make sure they get the right equipment and shoes. “People are constantly thanking me and saying that they have never run pain free before coming here. That’s the thing that keeps me going.” And keeping this woman going is more a labor of love than a job. Each Saturday morning she is up at 3:30 am to put out 40 pounds of ice on tables at A1A North of Linton and in Highland Beach. It is there her running groups can grab a beverage or edible for their 6 am run that starts at her store. Her runs are free and open to all. “We have a run on Tuesday at 5:30am and at 6:30 at night, Wednesday night at 6:15 from Ben & Jerry’s (you get free ice cream after the run), Thursday at 6:30pm and every second Sunday is a ‘Fun Run’ from Salt Water Brewery at 4:30.” What Burke wants people to know is that you don’t have to be a runner to shop at her store (or join activities). “Over half of my customers are not athletes. It’s about comfort and health, not just running. When you wear the wrong shoes it can cause knee pain, hip and calf pain or it can inflame bunions. The human eye is only so good, but we have the software to make sure you get the right fit.” Just ask Robin Goldberg. “I brought a friend to DBRC who had a lot of pain running. Annie did a thorough evaluation of his gait and found him a shoe that’s perfect for him. Annie and her staff are knowledgeable about everything they sell and take time to understand each person’s unique needs. There is no better running store in south Florida.” Burke is also starting Custom Marathon Training Plans for all customers. That’s a far cry from her humble beginnings. “I grew in up foster care and lost three siblings to drug overdoses. rant they could eat at. My immediate reaction was to pick up my phone and get them a reservation somewhere else. It turned out they were in town to sell their father’s house who had recently passed away. They gave me the listing and I ended up selling it for them. I not only sold the house for them but I assisted them in the entire process. I called the movers, packed up the contents, and had the house cleaned. I always go that extra step to help others.” Going that extra mile is what has made Dina so successful. The business and finance major from University of Minnesota worked in customer service for a skincare industry in Beverly Hills, and managed offices’ and finance departments in the entertainment industry. She worked with high level executives at Island Records and at Warner Brothers she was a personal assistant to music royalty, Quincy Jones’s production company. “I have worked with celebrities and high level business executives in my career, but I know the importance of treating all people with respect and professionalism.” Dina’s versatility and work ethic makes her the perfect person to help those looking to rent a condo, apartment or sell property (and estates) worth millions of dollars. If you ask Razzy Jacobs what he’s selling, he’ll tell you time. Though most of us don’t think of a cleaning service as one that sells hours or days, in his mind it’s one of the most precious things we have. While flipping properties he was in charge of cleaning those properties. As business grew he had more houses to clean, which meant he had to recruit more people to help him complete this time consuming task. That’s when the light bulb went off in his
brain. “I kept asking for help from my friends at the restaurant where I worked. neous and overwhelming and to my surprise I am painting as much as I ever did.’ Taking over an existing frame shop on the busiest section of Atlantic Ave., Delray Art and Framing was born in 2006. Akemi (or ‘Amy’ for short) supervises the vast array of custom moldings as well as the gallery which showcases work with a sophisticated ‘coastal’ sensibility. “As if by fate one of our first customers was the photographer Matthew Vought whose ‘Sailboat’ print we now publish. I thought it possessed exactly the special quality my husband and I were searching for.” “Ami has a great eye. I contacted Matt and asked him if I might enlarge it and luckily he said ‘yes’.” The print went on to be a phenomenon for the gallery who routinely ship it all over the country and Europe. Most recently they began representing Karen O’Neill’s work. O’Neill’s stunning aerial photographs already had a rapidly growing reputation. “We were lucky to be able to convince her to allow us to represent her as well as her husband Roger’s elegant hand crafted minimalist frames that are an integral part of her work.”

Davis continues: “Another important feature is our ability to customize large format prints to fit our clients walls. We frequently digitally superimpose the art over a cell phone photo of the wall in question which helps visualize how something will actually look but we will also bring multiple pieces to the client’s home to help them make just the right choices.” Most recently the couple have been working on creating a line of Davis themed products including ties and beach towels. Davis is excited by the response. “They have been a big hit as they make great gifts as well as cool vacation keepsakes. We have had some interest from major chains but we like to keep things local for now” Last April DelrayART reallocated to Pineapple Grove where they almost doubled their gallery space. “Of course a big part of our business remains the custom framing. This month, a few visionaries and their supporters will unveil a long standing dream.
The Delray Beach Children’s Garden, 137 SW 2nd Avenue in Delray Beach, sits a block and a half from bustling downtown Atlantic Avenue, but in many ways a world apart. A grand opening is set for January 3rd. The garden was a community effort with a variety of contributors. It was spearheaded by Shelly Zaks who serves as director of the project.
Her energy and drive enticed others to get involved. Some provided online donations, others provided sweat equity and their knowledge of plants. That makes the project extra special. The land is being generously leased for $10 a year by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. “The end result will provide our community with a sustainable, educational

and fun garden that will bring children together from all economic and cultural backgrounds to work, play, learn, explore and problem solve together in a lush, natural setting,” said Bruce Bastian, a volunteer. Delray Beach Children’s Garden was designed by children. Adults are helping children build it. People of all ages will benefit from the garden, the first of its kind in South Florida. The mission of Delray Beach Children’s Garden is nurturing eco-consciousness in children. After a long design and fundraising process, the group spent the holiday season raising another $3,000 online and through social media to complete the final stage of garden construction, including a pergola, a sandbox, and more plants and trees. The pergola at the garden entrance was important since it provides a growing surface for vines and creepers. Over time, organizers said it will provide shade and serve as a landmark in the garden for children and adults alike. Passing through a vine-covered pergola acts as a gateway, helping people become more aware that they are entering a different and living place, says Zaks. An old-fashioned sandbox was also contem-
plated as a place for kids to engage in creative play, allowing them to activate their imagination and their bodies together. That is something video games and most toys don’t do. Plants in the garden are designed to engage all of a child’s senses, not just some of them. Food plants, decorative plants, aromatic plants — and the butterflies and bees they attract — delight a child’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Plants also educate children and adults about the mysteries of nature and the life sciences: biology, botany, medicine, and more. In typical Delray fashion, the Children’s Garden is a true community project. In September, organizers conducted a design charrette soliciting input from citizens, including children and horticulturists. Many of Delray’s landmark community projects were designed and created as a result of the charrette process, which invites stakeholders from all walks of life to contribute ideas and suggestions. A panel of local children was convened to critique the designs that emerged from the event. The final plan includes a raised bed garden in the shape of a labyrinth, an aquaponics learning center with a pond and a pi-
rate ship, a banana forest, a sunflower habitat, a large outdoor classroom, butterfly, pollinator, herb and fragrance gardens, to name just some of the features. Other highlights include a hut built by Native Americans. The design was approved by the City of Delray Beach and ever since volunteers from the community have been meeting on Saturday mornings, working to build the garden. The growing Delray Beach Children’s Garden volunteer force consists of local church and synagogue members, students from Sea Star Initiative Waldorf School, St. Andrew’s high school and middle school students, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, a local 4-H club, Palm Beach County Master Gardeners and members of the Delray Beach Children’s Garden Meet-Up. The fundraising efforts will be ongoing to maintain the previously unimproved property. Allison Turner knows that good things come to those who work hard. She learned that when she started playing tennis at the age of seven.
It wasn’t long before this “can do” woman was nationally ranked in the junior tennis circuit when she turned 16. Unlike some athletic child prodigies Turner kept her focus on her education, tennis and after-school theater productions. “I often did my homework at night from 10 pm to midnight. My friends were in the theater department and I liked the teacher, so I balanced it all together,” said the owner of Business Consultants of South Florida. In college Turner chose history as her major – even though it entailed reading a 400-page book a week. It was in history class that Turner learned about life in the abstract. “I really liked my history professor. We would have these discussions that forced us to look at both sides of an issue, think it through and then talk about it. I learned that there’s not always an easy solution and that there’s always two sides to a story. We also learned that history repeats itself.” Apparently it does in the world that Turner inhabits. She continues to play tennis (although not professionally) and continues to look at all sides of life as if it were a prism to be dissected. When not consulting with small businesses and non-profit organizations to strategize their growth and create goals, she is making a difference in the city of Delray Beach. “I am the new Chair of the Delray Beach Initiative. We are a volunteer-based community organization geared toward enhancing the lives of local children. We create events that encourage community engagement and raise awareness about the needs of local children.” This past year the DBI had three popular fundraisers – a Halloween party that raised funds for the Milagro Center, a Woodstock party that

benefited Family Promise and a Mardi Gras that enabled the Pine Grove Elementary School to purchase I-Pads for students. When she isn’t helping children (or clients) Turner might be found with her fingers in the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce pot. Her new title as Chair of the Ambassadors for the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce allows her to increase the visibility of new members and promote participation and retention in the chamber. She also cochairs a DBCC Leads Group. Though she’s a quiet force behind the wings of many an activity in Delray Beach, Turner has impressed those who know her. “The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce does more than business together – we do life together. Allison ‘does life’ with us and has added so much to the Delray Chamber. As a consultant she has helped many in this community grow and strengthen their business. As a leader Allison motivates others through her LEADS Group, and as Ambassador Chair Allison has touched so many with her caring, warm heart,” said Lynn Van Lenten, Member Relations Coordinator of DBCC. Luxury Real Estate Specialist Jessica Rosato also sees the depth of character that Turner brings to the city. “Allison is a leader in the Delray Beach Community. Not only is she dedicated to helping her clients grow their businesses with creativity, passion, and successful branding and marketing strategies, she is dedicated to the livelihood of Delray Beach as a whole. Allison is always helping others achieve their goals and becoming their best. She is talented, confident and always professional,” said Rosato of Nestler Poletto Sotheby’s International Realty.
There’s another reason that Turner is so firmly rooted in the local community. Her father Charles was born in Delray Beach in the same historic landmarked house she lives in now. “My grandparents moved from Oklahoma to Delray Beach before my father was born in 1932. The house was built in 1925 in downtown Delray.” There is another side to this community minded gal that many people may not know about. She worked in social service agencies after college and had a direct affect on helping those in need. “I worked in a domestic violence shelter and as a crisis intervention counselor who reunifies families,” said the graduate of Northwestern University who attended on a full scholarship by playing Division I College Tennis. Though Turner didn’t devote her life to the social service pathway, she does have a remnant of it in her life now. She is currently a comentor for Women of Tomorrow at Lake Worth High School. It is there that Turner helps at-risk girls learn about goal setting and success skills. They bring in speakers, mentor the girls and help them with self-esteem issues. “Working in social services made me realize how important it is to make sure children grow up well. I also realized that I could have more of an impact outside of the ‘system’ whether through tennis or business. That’s why I am so excited about being part of the Delray Beach Initiative and Women of Tomorrow.” In 2006 when Turner was the Director of Junior Tennis at the Woodfield Country Club she went back to graduate school at FAU to get a MBA. Even though Turner is helping others fulfill their business goals, she hasn’t given up her passion of moving with the wind under her feet. “After not competing on the tennis court for 23 years I am now playing tennis on a SPBWTA team at Mission Bay. My partner and I are currently undefeated.” Life is good for Allison Turner – and she deserves it.

That’s why Menna customizes special dishes in his intimate restaurant, Il Contadino. “I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my restaurant; often times it will be something not on the menu. I take pride in the fact that I can offer my customers their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.” That’s one of the perks of dining at this cozy restaurant in Pineapple Grove. You never know what Menna will cook up. If you’re lucky he just might have a platter of piping hot Osso Buco in a rich tomato sauce with risotto. He has also been known to create a wonderful homemade Bolognese Sauce with fresh ground beef bathed in his grandmother’s secret hearty tomato sauce with pasta. One thing that’s a given is that a meal at Il Contadino is a special celebration. Just ask Joseph Nuzzi. “I’ve been ordering from Il Con-

tadino through the Delivery Dudes for a few months. Tonight I happened to walk by with my girlfriend and we sat down to eat dinner. They have the best Chicken Parmesan in the city and we just love the breaded eggplant stack. The service here is phenomenal, attentive and accommodating,” said Nuzzi, whose family owns five Italian restaurants and who compares Il Contadino to the greatest Italian restaurants in Palm Beach County. Nuzzi isn’t the only one smitten with the fresh food at Il Contadino. Just recently the Mayor of Delray Beach (Cary Glickstein) joined the Vice Mayor of Pesaro, Italy (Daniele Vimini) in a sister city lunch at this authentic Italian restaurant. The two dined on a platter of fresh stone crabs with a heritage that hails from the most precious of this delicacies origin. There’s another reason that foodies (and food connoisseurs) come to Il Contadino– and it’s the quality of their food. Everything is fresh and prepared with a consciousness geared toward pleasing diners. “Il Contadino took me in like one of their own when I was cold, wet and hungry. I wanted spaghetti carbonara - and the restaurant next door closed early – so I ended up at Il Contadino. Immediately Dale and Michel made me feel like part of the Il Contadino family. They accommodated all of my requests and specially prepared spaghetti carbonara for me. I will never forget the cozy ambience and goodwill I experienced. The spaghetti carbonara was exquisite, and so was the wine and cheesecake. Their food is world class 5- star if you ask me.”

Just recently Menna added a few great dishes to his menu. The fresh Chilean Sea Bass with jumbo head-on-shrimp and organic spinach with prosciutto di Parma in a caper lemon sauce is excellent. Also luscious is their wild salmon in a light tomato sauce with peppers sautéed in a light tomato sauce with basil, garlic and wine. The fish is so fresh and the combination of flavors will have you dancing with delight (figuratively). Because Michel likes to entertain his guests with exuberance and delight, he recently brought back a tradition that was de rigueur in fine dining establishment’s years ago. He has started to flambé dishes at the table. You can opt for Penne Vodka freshly cooked at your table with butter, cream, marinara sauce and onions torched with a flame so it’s piping hot and flavorful. There will be other flambé dishes (and desserts) served tableside as well. Another new great dish we love is Chicken Rollatini made with chicken breast, prosciutto and mozzarella with breadcrumbs in a light tomato sauce. The chicken is fresh and tender (the way it should be) and the sauce is light and tasty enough to make you feel like your grandmother just prepared it special for your birthday. That’s the charm of this authentic Italian restaurant. Owner Menna thinks of his patrons as part of his extended family. He treats everyone with respect and is eager to show guests his culinary prowess. It’s not that he’s showing off, it’s that he wants everyone to be happy. That’s one reason that Cathy Lee enjoys frequenting Il Contadino so much. “Michel runs

I look forward to many more days and nights of food and drink at Il Contadino.” Menna has been in the food business for most of his life. He owned Ponte Vecchio in Ft. Lauderdale, restaurants in Boca Raton and studied the culinary arts in Europe. He was also in the produce business and knows what to look for when buying and preparing unique dishes. There’s also a new budding ‘chef in the making’ in the kitchen. Daughter AnnaGabriella, who just turned six-years-old, is taking her father’s lead and cooking up a storm. So far her claim to fame is fresh Key Lime Pie that diners are swooning over. You can try a piece or purchase a whole pie to take home. Papa Menna is proud. “My kids love being in the kitchen and my daughter’s Key Lime Pie is so popular that everyone wants to buy some. I’m saving all proceeds from the sale of the pie for her college fund.” Whether you want to dine inside or sit outside at the sidewalk café (that oozes of European sophistication) you’ll be treated like royalty and fed fresh homemade food that delights the senses. ingredients (Serves 2-4 people)
• 10 ounce piece center cut beef tenderloin • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 cups lightly packed fresh arugula • ½ cup chopped radicchio • 1/2 -ounce shaved Parmesan • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • ½-ounce capers • 1 tsp White truffle oil 128 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Season the beef tenderloin liberally with Olive oil, Salt and black pepper. Heat a medium sauté skillet to medium high. Sear the meat in the hot pan leaving each side on the heat for only 1-2 minutes. Remove from the heat and place in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Wrap the tenderloin in plastic wrap and twist the ends tight to form the meat into a perfectly round shape. Place the meat in the freezer for approximately 1 hour. In a medium size mixing bowl wisk together olive oil and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Lighty toss in the arugula and radicchio just to coat the greens. On a slicer or with a sharp knife thinly slice the partially frozen beef and lay it out on a large cold plate, covering most of the plate. Place the dressed greens in the center of the plate and garnish with shaved Parmesan, capers and a drizzle of truffle oil.

Cut whole lobster tail in half then tempura, put steam sushi rice on the seaweed sheet, then put masago and sesame seed. Turn it over, place half of lobster tempura, cucumber, and asparagus. Roll & then cut it. The other half of lobster cut into small pieces and put inside a martini glass

Can I Keep My Pets Healthy and Living Longer in 2016 and Beyond?
A
s we enter 2016, this PetXpert is going to take the lead in achieving longer, healthier lives for your pets. Our goal is to promote healthier pets, minimize your veterinary expenses, eliminate the dependence of drugs and treatments plus guide you down the path of a natural, bonded life with your pets. The following guidelines will give you a “leg up” on keeping your pets healthy and happy. There are two simple steps to the core of this system. The first is to feed your cats, dogs, birds and all other pets, a species appropriate diet. Every animal except man eats raw foods daily as a meal. The food is not altered in any form. It is a rotational diet chosen naturally depending on season and availability. They fast, they gorge and in nature, there are no obese animals, no diabetics, no animals with walkers or limited life spans except for those with man-induced cancers, Look to the ancestry of your pet for the components of their natural diets. Dogs and cats are carnivores and therefore digest only animal proteins and fats… yes animal fats are good for your carnivores. Birds, small animals, mostly rodents are omnivores or herbivores … they eat everything
raw. In nature there is NO bird or rabbit food. These are only marketing opportunities devised by food producers to sell these products which mostly consist of waste. The second step is to look closely at veterinary medicine today. In nature, there are NO annual or semi-annual medical checkups. Most of the time, these requirements are nothing more than marketing to sell you something, whether it is ineffective vaccinations, synthetic preventatives, or tests. You see your pet every day, just as you would a child. Forty or fifty years ago, our parents treated ourselves and our pets within the home. They instinctively knew what to do with food, herbs and other products that were used on a daily basis. There was no $5000 vet bill. By using a more natural regimen and plan, veterinarians are utilized similar to how physicians were used in the past…for critical care or emergency only! The key is to look to nature for the cures and prevention. There are hundreds if not thousands of plants that provide the curative and preventative properties to keep all of us safe. It’s hard to believe the Delray Beach Chamber just completed its 90th year. In the beginning, the Chamber’s first President Mr. Diggans (grandfather to Winnie Diggans Edwards) was the postmaster here. He, along with other enthusiastic residents built an oversized mailbox in the center of town and encouraged all residents to write letters to their loved ones around the globe encouraging them to come to Delray “because of the possibilities here.” You could say they were the first “social media” champions in Delray and their publicity stunt photos seem like a precursor to today’s “Most Fun Small Town in America” moniker. We are thrilled to continue the conversations with friends, family and visitors around the world about the possibilities here in Delray. Today the Chamber of Commerce is thriving more than ever. The “vibe and culture” of our new space and meeting rooms continue to attract business people and visitors from around the globe on a daily basis. We see members getting the guidance and tools they need to connect, grow and thrive—all contributing to job creation and a highlydesirable quality of life. As we reflect on our history and look forward to exciting days in the New Year ahead, we are feeling grateful to live and work in such a vibrant community. Warmly,

Okay, so it’s a new year. We all have things on our same old new years’ “to do” list that we know will never get done. For instance, we aren’t going to scale Mt. Everest, we aren’t going to muster the courage to ask out the “way-too-hot for me” brunette in accounting and we certainly aren’t going to buy the midlife sports car that we would have to live in, because we can’t afford rent and the car. By the way, I know “She” and she embodies the “way-too-hotness” of which I speak. What we can do, is lower the bar and develop some realistic resolutions that will give you that immense sense of satisfaction when you achieve them. This newfound self-confidence will spill over into your social life, making even the girl in accounting take notice. Mold and change these as you see fit, but you will get the gist. 1. I am not going to get in shape. Instead, I will buy clothes with vertical stripes that make me look thinner and fit. In concert with my new wardrobe, I will endeavor to lay off the chicken wings on two designated nights per week (usually Wednesday and a non-football night of your choosing). The pounds will drop off, or at least appear to. 2. I will buy a book on wine and become a pseudo-wine expert. Women love guys who know wine. You will be able to talk about “legs”, the need to breathe and “oakiness”, to the astonishment of all. The “come hither” looks from wine groupies will pile up, especially after several glasses. 3. I will help two friends move. In the past, we have always had an excuse for not helping a friend move. “I’m sorry, but I’m busy that month”, “I’m on call for emergency brain surgery” and the ever popular “my bad back won’t let me”. This year, we are going to suck it up and actually help the first two people who ask. Again, you will look good for doing 146 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
a solid, possibly put one or two in the bank and you will have a good water cooler story regarding your altruism. As you can see, these center around bolstering your self-confidence, lifting your spirits and preparing you to take on the new year with freshly instilled bravado, panache and aplomb. Who, knows, maybe Ms. “Way-toohot” really isn’t out of reach after all.

We have survived the holiday trifecta, Thanksgiving-Chrismukkah-NewYear’s Eve. This is where we close the book and start over with new hopes and goals. They say resolutions are made to be broken, so instead let’s call them goals. Goals are set to be reached (or scored!). I choose to begin each new year with a clean slate. No looking back - you’re not going that way. I do however reflect on the past to try and not make the same mistakes. We are all familiar with the definition of insanity, right? Anyway, this year I will focus on 3 major points in life: Health, Wealth, Love and Happiness. All three are intertwined. Health - I will pay better attention to what
I choose to eat and ummm, drink. And I will make exercise a part of my weekly routine again. I fell off the gym wagon and was lovingly caught by my couch. I am not proud to say I have mastered “deep couch sitting” and I have memorized every channel in my cable provider’s line up. Wealth - I will take the time to better manage my finances and invest in my financial future. Maybe budget my clothing and shoe spending (WOW that hurt!). Maybe... Love and Happiness - Feeling better both physically and financially will definitely promote self confidence and esteem. Which of course will project outwardly and create positive energy all around. This alone will make you happier and more attractive to everyone. This is my plan for 2016. Self awareness and improvement. Me, me, meeeee!!!! LOL!!! And as for He, *insert side eye look here* Ms. “Way-too hot” is a very biased and generous, albeit appreciated compliment. Thank you. All you have to do is ask - if you don’t, the answer is always “no”. For the record, I like wine...

Recycled Memories
{
It’s hard to throw away your history. But sometimes you have no choice–especially if you are building a new kitchen and losing closet space in the process.
And so part of our holiday was spent deciding what to keep and what to ditch. It was agonizing–for me anyway. I was a newspaper reporter for the old Delray Times back before the digital age and since 1987 I have lugged my old newspapers to various addresses. They take up shelf space and some of the clips are yellow but they represent an important part of my life–they also cover a pivotal period of Delray’s history. I covered Delray from 1987 through 1997 from the Doak Campbell era through the Tom Lynch and Jay Alperin mayoral terms of office. It was an important era, representing the beginning of Delray’s revitalization highlighted by Visions 2000, the Pineapple Grove Main Street designation, the Decade of Excellence and the first All America City bid. There were lowlights too–political infighting in the 80s, a revolving door of City Managers and key city staff until 1991 and lots of controversy over issues such as race, drugs, crime, policing and labor relations. But it was mostly a progressive era, marked by progress, relative unity and vision. I wrote about it all; issues large and small and it was a great job giving me a bird’s eye view of how a city works. I rode with police officers, followed a young father through drug rehab, interviewed criminals, artists, entrepreneurs and even actor Burt Reynolds who filmed an episode of his detective series “BL Stryker” at the Cathcart House on South Swinton. His first words to me: “I hope you’re not with the Enquirer.” It was a great ride, writing about efforts to get something going on Atlantic Avenue, sitting through strategy sessions about the future of North Federal Highway (rife with prostitutes, an adult bookstore and vacant lots at the time) and rejoicing when a coffee shop opened downtown. 150 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
I didn’t know it at the time, but that decade spent writing about Delray was great training for my tenure on the City Commission, enabling me to see how issues emerged and requiring me to find sources on both sides of the issue. Our newspaper came of age after the demise of the respected Delray News Journal and we “competed” against the Post, Sentinel and Boca News. But we wrote more–at least 6-8 stories a week, plus restaurant reviews, school news, social calendars and local sports. We covered Delray like it was the White House beat. It was fun and never boring. So it’s sad that the paper never had an archive or was digitized. Because while I successfully “saved” a few (ok more than a few) papers, even I – a notorious pack rat – have to admit that I can’t keep it
all and have a…..oh a new kitchen. So….they will be recycled. A decade of local history, arguments over whether to build a golf course clubhouse or a hot dog stand, debates over replacing Ken and Hazel’s with a movie theater, stories about the beginnings of Pineapple Grove, efforts to buy the Paradise Club, stories about MAD DADS, the beginning of community policing, the early years of the CRA, the beginning of legendary careers–Chris Brown, Rick Overman, Joe Gillie, Bill Wood, stories about Banker’s Row, protests on the beach, the first Art and Jazz on the Avenue and the purchase of a 100 foot Christmas tree will live on in our memory and oh yes the several hundred papers I managed to squirrel away. Shhh...don’t tell my wife.
