e tend to think a month or two ahead, which means by the time you read this we are focusing on July’s issue and this was written in May. Confused? So are we sometimes, but it all seems to work out. All of this is a long winded way of saying that sometimes things happen and you miss an opportunity to say thank you in a timely way. I wanted to say thanks to Shirley Talbert, a friend who passed away recently after an illness. Shirley was a great contributor to Delray Beach and Palm Beach County. She was a friendly voice and someone who was a visionary and extremely intelligent. She was a champion of “Artist’s Alley” where her husband Laszlo has a studio and was a supporter of Pineapple Grove and downtown Delray Beach. She loved historic preservation and worked in a national capacity in that field. We worked together on a committee to help rebrand Old School Square which became the Delray Center for the Performing Arts at Old School Square. Her intelligence and knowledge of marketing was invaluable on a committee tasked with designing a new website. I learned a lot from her. We all did. As Chief Marketing Officer for the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau she was instrumental in positioning our county as a desirable place for vacationers and business travel. When people ask me what the best part of being an elected official was, I never hesitated. It’s the people you get to meet by virtue of your position. Shirley was one of those people who sought me out and she was generous with ideas and input on items ranging from improvements to historic neighborhoods to the formation of our Cultural Plan. Fortunately, those relationships transcend your time in office. What a gift. She was a great person and she will be missed by many. Inside this edition, you will find a guide to Father’s Day, some timely advice on downtown parking and a whole lot more. Thanks for reading and thanks for supporting Atlantic Ave Magazine. Delray Beach ITF hosted by the City of Delray Beach Presented by The Venetian® Las Vegas

U.S. players close out a field of international stars in week’s climactic matches Boys champion Alfredo Perez (USA), had revenge on his mind following his loss in the final of the Coral Gables ITF a week earlier to Miomir Kecmanovic, a 14 year old Serbian. In the Delray Beach final, Perez must’ve felt he was experiencing déjà vu as he won the first set by the same 6-4 score and found himself in a battle in the second. The difference this time being his ability to close out the final break of serve and take it 7-5 and hoist the trophy. The win gave Perez a 9-1 record in ITF events this year, with his only loss being the one to Kecmanovic the week before. In the girls’ event, the All-American final assured local tennis fans that U.S. tennis would prevail in both the boys’ and girls’ draws. Top seed Mia Horvit (USA) vs unseeded Katharine Fahey (USA). Fahey won! Her win vaults her ITF record to 9-2

on the year…and surely the opportunity to kiss that 4-digit ranking goodbye. For complete draws and previous results, please visit: http://www.yellowtennisball.com/delray-beach-i

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in June for $50 or less.

I

f you want something done right, do it yourself. Especially when it comes to tasting wines, right? June is Entrepreneurs “Do It Yourself” Marketing Month and the owners of The Wine Wave have hit the nail on the marketing head. Not only do they offer an extensive selection of international wines, tempting liquors and craft beers, but they do so in a comfortable and enticing environment. No matter if you’re looking for something to wet your palate for the beach, an important dinner party or a special event (party of two, wink), The Wine Wave has you covered. If you need a little push to become a lifetime client, attend the wine tasting on June 19 that owners Jeremiah and Lindsey host so you can become more familiar with the upand-coming adult beverages. “Do it yourself” for $10 and enjoy gourmet appetizers and a tasting of hand-selected wines from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Better yet, purchase four bottles and your tasting fee is waived. Do I smell Napa Valley in our little Delray? Yes sir, and I’d like another. The Wine Wave is located at 900 E. Atlantic Ave. Please visit www.thewinewave. com or call (561) 276-2076 for more information and to RSVP.

amily’s that origami together, stay together. June 15 is Family Awareness Day and we should kickstart this holiday the day prior and enjoy an activity we normally wouldn’t have the patience for. into three dimensional art. I tried this once when I was little and made a crafty giraffe, with the much-needed assistance of my father, and it was super fun. (Okay, he mostly made it. Don’t judge me.) The one-hour Workshop is held at 11 a.m. for beginners and 12:30 p.m. for intermediate individuals and is a great way to exercise your mental capacity as you learn simple origami techniques and make a few fun objects. The cost is $10 for parent and child with paid museum admission, and $5 for each additional participant. So if you’re looking for something fun and different for a hot summer Saturday, look no further than this Workshop. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road and the Workshop is held at the Oki Education Center. Please

Sure, dad would probably want to snooze on the sofa all the live long day, but it’s our job to get him outside and wake up the fun father factor. The brunch cruise on June 15 is a two hour cruise that meanders north through the Intracoastal

toward Manalapan Island, which is one of the wealthiest communities in the U.S. Enjoy a menu stocked with all the fixins’, including fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage, cinnamon French toast, roasted potatoes, Chef’s pasta selection, Chef’s carving station and tossed garden salad. Your dad will be pleased with the food choices, tickled with the company (obviously) and thrilled he can get in some sun before catching the long-awaited episode of The Fabulous Life of Robin Thicke on T.V. If your dad is a bear in the morning, book him for the afternoon sightseeing cruise where he can enjoy a tasty beverage in his favorite sun hat on the deck of the ship while he learns about sights of interest in his own backyard. The brunch cruise is $42 per person and departs at 10:30 a.m., and the sightseeing cruise is $24 for adults and $21 for children, and departs at 1:30 p.m. Please visit www.delraybeachcruises.com or call (561) 243-0686 for more information and to make reservations.

S

harks give me the heebie-jeebies and I’m pretty sure I can go forever without missing them. But, from time to time, I do like to put a fresh fin forward and sideline my fear. June is National Smile Month and if you don’t think sharks smile, head to the Sandoway House Nature Center for shark feedings where they happily await their grub, and where you can learn about everything related to sharks. Check out the sharpest exhibit in town and learn about 100 genuine shark and ray jaws including a Great White jaw. Not only that, but you can get a sneak peek into Hawaiian shark tooth weapons, fossil dig for a shark tooth and take a photo in a giant Megalodon jaw. Now you tell me who’s ever done that during their summer vacation? The fun continues with a new addition this year with fossil and modern Sawfish and Saw sharks. Shark feedings take place Tuesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. and is a perfect way to learn about these predators while they munch on breakfast. Admission is only $4 per person ages 3 years old and up, so there is no reason not to take a bite out of summer and learn about these creatures that roam our waters. I bet by the time you leave you’ll have a smile from gill to gill. Shark Month runs June 1 through August 31. The Sandoway House Nature Center is located at 142 S. Ocean Ave. Please visit www.sandowayhouse.org or call (561) 274-7263 for more information.

hether we say it or not, we appreciate you dad. And to thank you for the countless times you’ve taught us manners, how to drive manual, built us tree houses and acted like a fool to cheer us up, we want to give something back to you (and, no, this isn’t just another excuse to get a new dress). June 1521 is Universal Father’s Week and this is a prime time to show good ol’ dad just how much we care about him at Dad and Daughter Date Night. Dads and daughters are invited to attend this celebration of Father’s Day with an elegant evening featuring a full-course dinner with music for your dancing and groovin’ enjoyment. In addition to re-teaching us how to dance (sorry about stepping on your toes, yet again), all dads will leave with a keepsake photo from the night and a mountain of memories. The all-ages event is held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 13 at the Delray Beach Golf Club. Costs include $25 per person and $20 for daughters younger than 12 years old (a small price to pay for mom getting a solo night!). The Delray Beach Golf Club is located at 2200 Highland Ave. Please visit www.mydelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-7277 for more information or to reserve your date night.

DIG RESTAURANT

I

f you’ve ever worked in the restaurant business and loved it, you know that its something that just gets in your blood. For me, it’s a business that I’ve been involved in for most of my life, working as a server, a bartender, a manager and even owning a couple of restaurants up north. What makes this special is that it’s fun, it’s exciting and it’s always changing. Originally from New York, I came to Florida almost 15 years ago and discovered that working in restaurants down here, you’re always meeting people and getting to know them. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy my job as a hostess at Caffe Luna Rosa so much. Since I came here two years ago, I’ve had the chance to get to know a lot of our customers. Plus, I get to look at the ocean all day so I tell people I have the best cubicle in the world. Being a hostess at the busy restaurant can have its challenges but I know that I’m the first person our customers see, so I try hard to make a positive impression. Having a sense of humor and being patient are critical to doing this job well. Caffé Luna Rosa 34 South Ocean Blvd. Delray Beach (561) 274-9404 www.caffelunarosa.com

y daughter Heather and I recently relocated to the Delray Beach Area after residing in places such as Scotland, Canada, Michigan and North Carolina. We gained a wealth of hospitality knowledge, along with a number of other life experiences. I spent much of my life working in IT before deciding to come to South Florida to open a small cafe/ smoothie shop and eventually open my own full service restaurant with Heather. I am a proud mother of three children, all of whom work in hospitality, as well as a doting Nana to Heather’s beautiful two-year old daughter. Both my daughter and I love traveling and have been to places such as Peru, Mexico, Europe and all over the United States, for personal travel as well as extensive missionary work. Heather has been working in restaurants and hospitality since she was 15 and loves making memorable experiences for her guests. Recently we bought our first restaurant together, DIG, in Delray Beach and are excited for the opportunity to be involved in a community that we have quickly come to love. Come visit us at the DIG Restaurant and check us out on line, www.digeatery.com. By applying vibration from a special platform, WBVT stimulates sensors found in the musculoskeletal system called muscle spindles and mechanoreceptors that increase muscle tone in the spine and the extremities and enhance the brain-body connection.

Numerous studies have shown WBVT to aid in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis (one of the main causes of spinal stenosis), osteoporosis, neck-back pain, sports injuries, and neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

This results in the increased production of human growth hormone, serotonin, endorphins, and

Sunscreen…

what you need to know By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

From toddlers to baby “oil” boomers, most Americans have finally embraced the concept that sunscreen is essential to life. South Floridians are among the front runners in the wellness revolution, avidly pursuing youth and radiance while fighting the menace of skin cancer, but there is more to applying sunscreen than just dedication and commitment.

36 June May 2014 2014 || www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com 2013 www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

As a dermatologist, I am frequently consulted for advice on sunscreen. Most people believe that products sporting a really high number have the most powerful sun protection, proof that marketing sometimes plays against medicine. Here is a spoonful of truth for your beach bag. SPF 60 sunscreen does NOT give you twice as much sun protection than an SPF 30. In fact, it only blocks an extra 1% of UVB rays. How can that be true? Answer: The protection you get isn’t proportional to the SPF number. This is what we need to know about SPF and UVB: UVB is the sunburn ray. UVB is more intense near the equator, at high altitudes, during summer (when the earth is closer to the sun)

and between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm. The longer one is exposed to the sun, the more likely skin will burn. The SPF value indicates how well a product protects from UVB. Caution: it tells you nothing about cancer and wrinkle causing UVA protection (more on that later). Looking at this chart might be a bit of a surprise. SPF 2 means 50% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 4 means 75% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 10 means 90% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 15 means 93% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 30 means 97% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 50 means 98% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 70 means 98.5% of UVB rays are blocked SPF 100 means 99% of UVB rays are blocked Notice that once we reach SPF 15 we have already blocked 93% of UVB rays . After that the percent of UVB blocked barely changes as the SPF numbers go up. The sweet spot is SPF 30-45 where 98% of the UVB rays are blocked, and most dermatologists agree. In fact the FDA recently passed a law that will cap the SPF number to no more than SPF 50, in order to prevent unrealistic claims.

How do sunscreens work? Two basic sunscreen ingredients: Chemical sunscreens go into the skin and use a chemical reaction (molecules vibrate very rapidly to dissipate heat) to block UV rays from passing deeper into skin. This process reacts as heat, which is why some sunscreens may make users feel extra hot in the sun. The chemicals break down during this sun blocking chemical reaction, which is why sunscreen products indicate the necessity to reapply every couple of hours when continually exposed to the sun. Mineral sunscreens sit on top of skin and reflect and scatter the sunlight rays off the skin without a chemical reaction and without creating the warmth. Mineral sunscreens include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. While years ago, mineral sunscreens were white on the skin, today’s modern versions have been ‘micro sized’ making it difficult for the eye to see them on the skin. They don’t pass into skin and they don’t readily break down when they block the sun so their sun protection tends to last longer. Both chemical and mineral sunscreens block UVB well and can provide the same SPF values. Now let me discuss UVA. UVA protection is also critically important for anti-aging and skin cancer prevention.

UVA is out all day and all year and the SPF of a product provides no information about UVA protection. A sunscreen product can claim to give UVA protection even if it doesn’t protect from all the bad UVA rays. Most chemical sunscreens offer some UVA protection, but don’t cover the entire spectrum of UVA light. Sunscreen formulation is a complicated process. This is my advice to keep it simple. Look for a sunscreen product that has 5% or more zinc oxide in it because zinc oxide is the only ingredient that blocks all the way through the UVA wave spectrum to 400nm. Avobenzone is also a chemical blocker of UVA which has good coverage, but it also has stability problems and may not last in the bottle or on the skin. Bottom Line: Find a sunscreen that has 7% or more micronized zinc oxide such as Elta MD or something brand new on the market that has my personal signature, “Ultra.” One investigative visit to a sundries counter was enough to inspire to me to an imagination drawing board with a quest to create a real sunscreen, a product not packaged with gimmicks but destined to serve the public with genuine protection from the sun. “Ultra” was designed to protect skin from the entire UVA and UVB spectrum. “Ultra” is non-greasy and has no odor. “Ultra” rubs in completely and does not leave a white residue behind. “Ultra” is not only non-comedogenic, but actually can improve acne prone skin. Once in the making, I wanted my personal product to be more than sunscreen and to be loaded with anti-oxidants to help fight wrinkles. I wanted a product that would even out discoloration and not only prevent, but actually improve age spots. After 10 years of research and clinical trials, I am pleased and proud to

release “Ultra,” an ultra violet protector and skin rejuvenating cream. This sleek Balshi MD Derma-Ceutical sunblock is broad spectrum protection, anti-aging, acne improving, wrinkle resolving, pigment correcting and SPF 40 day cream. It’s the first and only sunscreen of its kind (US Patent Pending). Doug Carter Family Father’s Day Special

Virtuoso jazz and soul keyboard player Doug Carter celebrates the day with his talented musical family, featuring son Anthony on percussion

and vocals by daughter Yellow. Doug, musician, bandleader and composer didn’t get his start in some fancy music school. Instead, at the age of 15, the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native came across his talent naturally when his mother bought a piano for their home. Doug’s remarkable musical abilities earned him immediate exposure in South Florida and surrounding areas. Like many musicians, he explored multiple genres of music only to find that he had a special place in his heart for jazz, gospel, R&B and soul. His love for these genres would take him on a musical journey that would include a two-year tour with the Grammy Award-winning Joss Stone and the delight of sharing the stage with the likes of Elton John, Sting and Ann Nesby. Doug describes his talent and sound as “anointed and God-given.” He cites influences such as George Duke, Herbie Hancock, and Bud Powell, and he also admires new upcoming musicians with a fresh and innovative sound. When asked how he felt about music, Doug replied, “Music is the only language that does not require words.” When Doug is not touring, you can find him using his universal language with local South Florida artists such as his daughter, jazz sensation Yellow, who recently worked with Grammy Award winning Pharrell Williams, singing background vocals on the smash hit “Happy.” He also finds time to perform his son Anthony, singer and drummer, on his upcoming first record. Additionally, Doug provides leadership to his bands Symmetry and Easy Street, is a loving husband to Tracy and father of one more daughter, Tiffany, business manager and event planner. Doug’s humble spirit and laid-back attitude, along with his incredible sounds, gain him instant friendships across the world. Tickets are $25-35. June 6 It sounds like a soap opera, but “Edge of Tomorrow” is an actionadventure with a time-loop twist. Tom Cruise stars as Lt. Bill Cage, a soldier who has never seen combat but is thrust into a suicide mission where he dies and reawakens again and again into the same nightmare.

Nicola Peltz

40 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Emily Blunt is a Special Forces warrior who helps him hone his combat skills in each new skirmish with marauding aliens. Practice makes perfect. Doug Limen (“Jumper,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) directs. “The Fault in Our Stars” sounds like a romance and it is - with a disease of the weak ankle. Shailene Woodley is Hazel Anderson, a cancer-stricken teen who depends on bottled oxygen to stay alive. Augustus “Gus” Waters (Ansel Elgort) has an artificial leg and is part of Hazel’s support group. Of course they fall in love amidst laughter and tears. Laura Dern plays Hazel’s mom and Willem DaFoe is Peter Van Houten. The script, directed by Josh Boone, is based on the best-selling novel by John Green.

June 13 Sometimes re-treads pay off. “21 Jump Street,” a 2012 movie based on Johnny Depp’s hit high school undercover cop TV series, earned more than $200 million. So Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are back in “22 Jump Street” as cops Jenko and Schmidt, who infiltrate a college campus whilst quarreling amongst themselves. Ice Cube returns as their irritable Capt. Dickson. “How To Train Your Dragon 2” is duh, also a sequel. Jay Baruchel returns as the voice of the animated heroic Viking Hiccup, who befriended a dragon named Toothless last time and saved the world. Voices include Craig Ferguson as Gobber, America Ferrera as Astrid, Jonah Hill as Snotlout, Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut and T.J. Miller as Tuffnut. If you think this is the last of Hiccup’s adventures think again, as this is planned as a trilogy.

June 20 Yet another sequel is “Think Like a Man Too” which reunites Kevin Hart, Terrence Jenkins, Romany Malco, Michael Ealy, Gary Owen and Regina Hill with director Tim Story. This time the misadventures occur at a wedding in Las Vegas. “Jersey Boys” is a movie musical based on the hit Broadway show of the same name that has played both Kravis Center and Broward Center here. Clint Eastwood and Jon Favreau are joint directors of the fictionalized account of the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons from poor Italian pop singers to wealthy recording artists, using the Four Seasons’ hits as a soundtrack. The cast includes former stage cast members Vincent Piazza, Johnny Cannizaro, Erich Bergen and Mike Doyle. “The Rover,” based on an idea by director David Michod and screenwriter Joel Edgerton, sounds a lot like “Mad Max,” the ultra-violent Mel Gibson melodrama that made him a star. Like that movie series, the story is set in a post-apocalyptic Australia where law and order has broken down and people are terrorized by roving bands of thugs. Like Max, Eric (Guy Pearce) is a loner roaming the desolate countryside. When a band of baddies steal Eric’s car they leave behind the wounded Rey (Robert Pattinson). We are guessing an unlikely friendship ensues and they go after the bad guys. June 27 “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction” is not only a sequel but the fourth in a never-ending series. Director Michael Bay doesn’t get much critical respect, but the series, based on the Hasbro robot toys that morph into cars, planes and of course lumbering, battling giant robots, has earned billions of dollars. Shia LaBoeuf is out and Mark Wahlberg is in as lead human Cade Yeager. Also starring are Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer as the villain, Harold Attinger.

How To Fix That

“Pain In The Neck”

{

By Dr. John Conde

Neck pain can be, well, a “pain in the neck”. It is estimated that 10% of Americans (that’s 30,500,496 people!) are currently suffering from neck pain. The traditional treatment prescribed by physicians utilizing pain relievers, muscle relaxants, rest, and possible soft collar application is no longer the acceptable standard of care as this regimen only produces symptomatic relief.

According to a landmark report furnished by the Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders (which can be found in the peer reviewed medical journal Spine), some of the most effective treatments for neck pain include manipulation, mobilization, massage, and exercise. In addition, cutting-edge research is exposing the benefits of brainbased therapeutic exercises for the relief and prevention of neck pain due to the brain’s intimate control of neck muscles. The neck is the most dynamic part of the spine. Its main functions are to protect the spinal cord, provide the foundation for the skull, and act as a bridge connecting the skull with the rest of the body. However, it has to be flexible enough to allow movement in six different planes. This makes the neck the most vulnerable region of the spine to injury. It is lined with a high concentration of compression sensitive sensors (joint mechanoreceptors), which when triggered provide a high powered stimulation to the brain which is essential for its health. The small muscles which surround the neck play a large role in the overall health of the neck. Reflexes generated in these muscles in response to stretch relay through a certain part of the brain termed the cerebellum which then fire back to keep these same muscles strong. As a result, brainbased therapies geared towards the cerebellum produce amazing results 44 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

concerning the overall stability of the neck. The most common neck complaints involve three distinct structures: the disc, the posterior joints of the spine also known as the facet joints, and the soft tissue regions including the ligaments and tendons surrounding the spine. Injury to the discs which are found between the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers will produce moderate to severe neck pain with associated pain into the arm and hand. The pain may be relieved momentarily with elevation of the affected arm over the head. Facet joint injuries will

also manifest as neck and arm pain but may start without an offensive behavior like a trauma and will typically produce pain down the outer arm into the hand. Lastly, soft tissue injury will normally produce localized pain with severe restriction of movement. Nausea and headache may accompany the pain. This is commonly found after motor vehicle accidents. Many new, advanced therapies are combining physical medicine such as mobilization exercises, stretch/strengthening exercises, myofascial release, traction, decompression, and nutrition with brain-based exercises targeting the cerebellum region of the brain. This approach not only focuses on the neck structures themselves but also the regions of the brain that control the deep intrinsic muscles of the neck producing greater stability. Stop hurting and start living. Schedule an appointment today. Dr. John Conde is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, one of only one thousand in the country. He holds diplomate status through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. Your Summer Should Start with Cupping

{

By Kristin Heather

Now that we are getting into bikini season,women everywhere are checking out the state of their butts and thighs!

So what if I told you that I have a solution to tightening up by getting a treatment that simultaneously increases circulation, stimulates lymph, speeds up metabolism, decreases water retention, and promotes overall wellbeing. Whether it’s cellulite or just what seems like sagging, fatty, or wrinkly skin, cupping will give great improvement to your bikini bod! Cellulite is a condition that affects the look of skin in areas with underlying fat deposits, giving the skin a dimpled, lumpy appearance. Fat, in and of itself, is not responsible for the lumpy, bumpy look of cellulite. In the right circumstances, fat can be a beautiful thing. In fact, facial fat is what’s responsible for the smooth and beautiful plumpness of youthful skin that aging adults spend a lot of money trying to recreate. The structure of the overlying skin and of the underlying connective tissue is what determines a smooth or rippled appearance. 46 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Women are more likely to have cellulite than men because the collagen (the main protein in connective tissue) in women has the appearance of a picket fence. In men it looks more like a cross-linked fence, which, in terms of connective tissue, is a much stronger structure. Men also have thicker skin, which works well against cellulite. And, men have more testosterone, which breaks fat down. Women, unfortunately, produce more estrogen causing more fat to build-up. Today, we are seeing women develop cellulite younger and younger. There is too much estrogen in our foods, like the meats and dairy products found everywhere from restaurants to grocery stores. Since the body cannot metabolize too much estrogen, it wraps it in fat. This increased estrogen on top of what women are already producing can lead to cellulite! There are a host of other cellulite contributors. Geneticsparticipates: especially those

genes that cause slow metabolism, poor circulation, and the way fat is distributed under the skin. Even clothing can affect the look of your legs and butt. Underwear,for example, that is too tight fitting may limit the amount of blood flow to one’sbody and contribute to cellulite.Wearing thongs, boy shorts, or looser fitting undergarments can help prevent cellulite to form. Also, many of our lifestyles lead to waste cultivation. Sitting in a car or at a desk all day, not walking on a regular basis leads to poor circulation, which leads to stunted circulation and increased fat build-up. Thankfully, there is cupping! Cupping is a way to address all the components that cost our legs their best looks. Cupping is a vacuum like suction of the skin, which draws the skin upward. This action helps to drain excess fluid and toxins, loosen adhesions, and lift connective tissue. It brings blood flow to undernourished skin and muscles. It is great for pain and overall health. It is fantastic to actually get rid of cellulite. The cupping treatment will help to bring the circulation back and eliminate all that excessive build-up, leaving your legs smooth and bump free. For maximum results, it is recommended to have this procedure 1-2 times a week for one month. As a forerunner in modern skin care services and anti-aging, Kristin founded Nourishe in Delray Beach and currently heads aesthetic science research and development. Kristin’s revolutionary approach to DNA Repair and her extensive training with some of the best professionals in the industry has made her the expert in healing and improving the skin naturally and holistically. Kristin created and holds exclusive rights to over 8 different treatments from DNA Repair to Oxy-Infusion to non-surgical face lifting techniques. 200 NE 2nd Ave #114 - Delray Beach, FL 33444 (561) 278-4144 - www.nourishemedispa.com

Embarrassed By Missing Teeth?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Restore your smile and quality of life.

OVERVIEW If you’re suffering from the embarrassment of missing teeth or the discomfort of ill-fitting dentures, you’re missing more than teeth – you’re missing out on the rewards of a healthy, beautiful smile. While conventional bridges or removable dentures have long been the standard for replacing missing teeth, dental implants may be a preferred alternative for you to consider. The dental implant is usually a cylindrical and/or tapered post made of titanium and is surgically placed below the gums, fused directly into your jaw bone. Implants serve as a secure and permanent anchor for replacement teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or complete dentures. By fully integrating into your natural bone and gums, they become a part of your anatomy, providing the most natural form, feel, and function possible. BENEFIT Dental implants offer a myriad of benefits that not only offer function and aesthetic relief, but also enhance overall health. Implants can dramatically improve your ability to chew, allowing you to enjoy the foods you love without hesitation because you can bite naturally. They can also restore the natural line of your jaw, filling out your face that may otherwise appear sunken from missing teeth. Implants are much more convenient than traditional bridges or dentures because they do not require nightly re-

48 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

moval, overnight soaking, or messy adhesives. Implants also have a track record of reliable, long-term successful outcomes and are often considered “more predictable” than other treatments to repair or replace missing teeth, including bridgework, removable appliances and retreatment of failing endodontic therapy.

SOLUTION Don’t let the fear or intimidation of the process deter you from attaining a healthy, beautiful smile. Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant, and an evaluation by a dental team will help determine whether you are a good candidate. Your dentist will develop a treatment plan for the dental implant, and the plan usually involves several steps. The implant is placed surgically into the jawbone, and as you heal, the implant will fuse with your natural jawbone. The implant and jawbone will grow together to form a strong and long-lasting foundation for replacement teeth. Once the implant bonds with the jawbone, a small connector (called an abutment) is placed on top of the dental implant to connect the implant to the replacement tooth. Finally, an individual tooth is then attached to the abutment. You deserve the comfort, security and natural appearance that expertly placed dental implants and custom-created replacement teeth can provide. Take the first step to getting the quality of life you deserve and make an appointment with your doctor to see if you are a candidate for dental implants. Spodak Dental Group is a comprehensive dental practice providing all general and specialty services in one convenient facility. Call 561-498-0050 or visit www. Summer is Here, Are You Ready?

{

By Ashley Sica

The hot weather is here and summer is upon us. It’s time to shed that extra layer and I’m not only talking about clothes, I’m talking about that “winter layer” many of us are all too familiar with. So its time to kick-start your summer bod and here are some tips to follow.

The first and most important component of shedding that winter layer is nutrition. I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming… the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. A successful food log would ideally consist of 5-6 meals per day spaced 2-3 hours apart with a proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes,…you can do it!) The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. If you see me at the gym you’ll most likely catch me walking around with my half gallon of water, that I at least try to drink 2 servings of daily. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full and help flush out toxins. The second component is resistance training. It has to be done…period. Resistance training is essential to fat burning and your metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. Ladies, I promise you don’t have to look like she-man to get the same affects nor will you get bulky from resistance training. I compare resistance training to a sculptor taking a piece of round clay molding it in to a nice shapely figure with tight rounded curves. That’s what resistance training does to your body. It gives your body the “shape” most are looking to achieve. I know a lot of people who think cardio alone will do this and that is the farthest thing from the truth. Although cardio has its time and place…resistance training is essential. You should aim to get in 4-5 sessions a week, lasting no longer than 30-40min. Pick 50 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

a program that works and appeals to you such as an upper body/lower body split, a push pull routine or total body split. Consult with a training professional if you need clarification on which type of program would work best for you. The last component is performing the right type of cardio. High intensity interval training also known as HIIT is the fastest and most effective way to decrease your body fat and show off all the resistance training that you’ve been doing. The best thing about this type of cardio is that you don’t need more than 2030 minutes per day. The days of super long and slow cardio sessions are OVER. HIIT will keep your body burning calories for hours after your actual session. This type of training involves alternating between intense bouts of exercise followed by low intensity exercise. If you’re a beginner you may want to start with a 1:1 work ratio. HIIT can be performed anywhere….outside using sprints or stairs, on the treadmill, the stairmaster (my favorite) or the elliptical. Pick something that YOU like and that you’ll stick to. Aim to perform HIIT cardio 3 times per week. If you’re performing it correctly, that’s all you will need. Take these 3 components of eating clean, resistance training, and proper cardio and you will be struttin’ your stuff down the beach in no time. There’s no better way to welcome the summer heat than with a healthy, more confident new improved you.

Chalk It Up to Summer Loving!!!

{

By mark hasche

Let the sun shine in! Summer is upon us and it’s time to play! It’s time to experiment with fun temporary color before you head back to work or school. What I’m getting at is let your inner punk rocker out. Here’s a few ways you commitment phobes can achieve this without letting people at the office/school know you’re a freak at heart.

The first is with wash in color. We offer watercolors by Tressa. It’s a temporary shampoo-in color that is used to brighten existing color. When you use the one meant for reds on lighter hair it gives a beautiful pink hue for up to 3-4 washes. There are a multitude of colors to choose from. Keep in mind that they don’t show up as well on darker shades of hair. For darker shades you might go the route of temporary hair extensions. We use platinum seamless extensions. They come in a rainbow of haute colors, a perfect fix for any color addict. They last for up to three months. The extensions are attached using an adhesive strip and can be applied in a hot minute. The best part is they can be removed just as quick and are damage free. So if you are still reading this that means you haven’t jumped up and sprinted to your fav salon yet. For the dedicated readers we’ve kept the best for last… Cue the drum roll please. Hair chalking is taking a strand (or stand) in the fashion world. “What exactly is this hair chalking I speak of” you ask? It’s not your home room teacher’s chalk that you used to write a hundred times “I will not chew gum in class again” with. Hair chalking is performed with soft pastels because regular chalk just won’t do. Hair chalking can take your braid or updo to a whole other level, not to mention help you achieve the sickest of sick colorful Ombres. Here are our DIY pointers. Twist the hair as you chalk. The texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment. Always brush the excess powder out after chalking each piece. 52 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

If you’re blonde or you have blonde tips, DO NOT wet your hair before chalking. It will stain if you do because adding water to pure pigment creates a real dye. If you’re okay with the staining for several washes then go for it! If you’re looking to do color

for the day, do not add water at any time. If your hair color is anything darker than blonde and you don’t have blonde tips, you’ll NEED the water. Doubling the pigment is what will help the colors to show up on darker hair. Mist a little water on the strand with a spray bottle, and then chalk it up! Unfortunately, it won’t stain darker hair the same way it will on lighter hair. Before you shower, brush with a soft, natural hair brush to get out as much pigment as you possibly can! It should come off almost all the way with brushing. Shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo after. Soft chalk pastels use “gum arabic” as a binder. It’s a very very small amount and totally natural, but it’s made from a tree sap so it’s really important to get it all out. Conditioning treatment is a MUST after you wash out your chalk. Replenish the moisture in your thirsty chalked hair. It can tend to be a bit messy so wear a robe while chalking. Give your hair some fun summer loving! Until next month this Divo is out! For This Dynamic Duo,

It’s All About Family By Darien Arden

Life couldn’t be sweeter for Dr. Myles Spodak and Dr. Craig Spodak. This father and son team is operating a world-renowned dental practice, revolutionizing the face of dentistry, and offering the community state-of-the-art comprehensive dental care. What is the secret to their success? Family values.

54 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Dr. Myles followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Harry Spodak, who began practicing dentistry in 1938. After graduating from dental school in 1966, in the middle of the Vietnam War, Dr. Myles spent two years as an Army Captain performing dentistry before returning to work with his father in 1968. Dr. Myles wanted to grow his own practice independently of his father so he founded Spodak Dental Group in 1969 in New City, NY. However, he still yearned for something new, so he and his wife Arlene decided to move the family, including daughter Sharon, 8, and son Craig, 4, to Delray Beach in 1975. Throughout the move, Dr. Myles strived to keep the family together. Arlene worked as the front desk receptionist from 1976 to 2006, but he could hardly wait for one more person to join him: his son. Dr. Craig was inspired to pursue a dental career when Dr. Myles renovated the office in 1991, adding all state-of-the-art equipment. This opened Dr. Craig’s eyes as to how he could grow the company and he joined his father at Spodak Dental Group in 1998, the same year he graduated from Tufts University. “I was so anxious for him to finish his schooling so he could join the practice,” Dr. Myles said. “I wanted to work with him and we are closer now than we have ever been.” Dr. Myles had a paternal instinct to give his son the company reigns because he wanted him to realize his full potential and to have complete freedom to create a comprehensive dental practice. “He had dreams of something more than what we had at that time so I turned the practice over to him in 2006,” Dr. Myles said. “He

was in a position of high growth and I didn’t want to hold him back. Spodak Dental Group, as you see it now, is the fulfillment of his dental career.” Dr. Craig wanted to bring this innovative idea to Delray Beach as he has a very special attachment to the city where he grew up. “I am emotionally, physically and economically invested in the community,” Dr. Craig said. “This is my home, where my parents live, and where I want to continue to raise my family and build the practice.” “I see a great future for Dr. Craig and the practice. I know he’s on the right track,” Dr. Myles said. “He has a lot of foresight and vision and what he has now is the wave of the future. You can see a lot of other companies are now following a similar business model, but he was on the cutting edge of the future of dentistry.” “My dad is my best friend and I love that I get to spend quality time with him every day,” Dr. Craig said. “He has not only taught me everything I know about dentistry, but he also gives me personal and professional advice. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.” The family tradition has been evolving for almost 100 years, and the Spodak team is pursuing the future with open arms. Dr. Craig and his wife Zaicha have two children, Sage, 4, and Gavin, almost 2, and they may be the next faces of Spodak Dental Group. “As long as I am physically able, I want to practice dentistry with my son,” Dr. Myles said. “The future of dentistry is excellent and I am very hopeful for Sage and Gavin to follow in the family tradition.” “Sage tells me she wants to work in the room between her grandpa and me,” Dr. Craig said. “I believe dentistry is a great profession and I would be pleased if both of my kids found happiness in it. Passion is contagious and they see how driven I am.”

LEE HUTTON

New York artist brings original abstract paintings to South Florida By Nicol Jenkins

Le Roi, known to many as Lee Hutton, has an eye for finding the beauty in anything imaginable and creating a masterpiece.

So much so that for over 30 years, Lee Hutton’s paintings have made a major impact on the New York art scene and most recently in South Florida. Lee houses his one-of-a-kind original abstract paintings at his studio, LEEWORKS, which is located in Boynton Beach. If you are searching for a unique piece of

art for your home or office, don’t look any further. Original oil paintings and artwork can be found at LEEWORKS. His artwork focuses on abstract expressionism and abstract pieces showcasing the urban side of New York and now a series on the tropical feel of South Florida. “I use a lot of movement and colors and

have been called a colorist. With that there is a lot of emotion and I put everything together and make it an energetic statement to the viewer. Colorists also use movement, not static images,” said Lee, adding, “My style has changed since I’ve been here. In New York, it was more urban, now I have rediscovered the wetlands and nature. It has fired

The artist himself, lee, in his gallery

my imagination and I have been inspired by forms and colors in the wetlands, instead of the grid like feel of Manhattan.” Lee’s creations, whether inspired by New York City or Delray Beach, are unlike any other--- and his story is just as intriguing. At only 22 years old, he began his pursuit of a career in the arts in Manhattan. His affinity for creative expression turned into a passion for classical ballet. He was accepted into the prestigious School of American Ballet. After just a year in New York, Lee earned an apprenticeship with San Francisco Ballet. After, Lee returned to New York to continue his study with David Howard. After successfully auditioning for Joffrey Ballet, he joined the company and began touring throughout North America, Europe and Asia. But Lee’s performance career was cut short after suffering a knee injury while on stage- however, this tragedy led to a successful career in painting. Bed ridden Lee sought another outlet to express his life experience. Putting pencil to paper, Lee began to make simple line drawings in color. Lee slowly made the transition to acrylic paintings on canvas and taught himself how to draw and paint, and he was determined to enhance his talent. Encouraged by a mentor, Lee enrolled at the Art Students League of New York City. Just a short time into his study, the instructor informed him that he had already found his voice as an artist. Lee would stay on to assist other artists and monitor the classroom. After nearly four

years, Lee took to using oils. Having developed and refined his craft, Lee resumed painting in the privacy of his own studio. During this period, Lee worked with a Jungian analyst to help him express and paint his dreams and subconscious. Lee would experiment with a variety of subjects inspired by the diverse cityscape of Manhattan. After painting for many years in New York, Lee decided to move to South Florida. Living in Boynton Beach, Lee’s vision has changed. Moving from the urban New York landscape, his craft now reminisces the flora and fauna of South Florida. “Most of my paintings and images tell a story. I try to reproduce the image in my mind, and I’ve learned how to sit down in front of a canvas and just start with one color, making lines and to keep building on it until an image is formed. I let the canvas tell me what to do!” said Lee. That method has proven successful for many years. He has also had many shows in South Florida including at Sotheby’s in Boca Raton, a Pineapple Grove show at Etti Gallery in Delray Beach, and will host future events at the Delray Beach Public Library. He is also working on two books, The Quest Series, and a children’s book named Tree People, which will be completed in the Fall. For more information or to make an appointment to see Lee’s artwork, call 561234-0978. You can also visit his art portfolio on his website at www.leeworks-art-florida.com.

Ideas for Father’s Day

By LINDA BROWN

Forget the traditional tie---dad hasn’t worn one in years. Ditch the “World’s Best Dad” mug and t-shirt. Frankly, Dad deserves better and we at Atlantic Ave Magazine have come up with five ideas to make this Father’s Day the most memorable one yet.

For Sporty Dads Maybe Dad used to play tennis but hung up his racquet when Bjorn Borg retired, or maybe he plays but can use some tips to raise his game. The Delray Beach Tennis Center has a top notch instructional staff that can work with everyone from beginners to tournament level players. They offer a program we love called “The Back to Basics Adult Clinic” at a price that can’t be beat, $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. The clinic is geared to players of all levels and takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (perfect for the working father) and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The clinic covers stroke techniques and covers basic drills. It’s fun, fast-paced and sure to improve Dad’s game. The Tennis Center is located on West Atlantic Avenue just west of Swinton in downtown Delray with plenty of parking. After the clinic, dad can choose from more than 130 nearby restaurants to unwind and relax. For questions and reservations please contact: (561) 243-7360. For the Political Dad If your Dad loves politics and history you may want to sign him up for a series of classes given by Dr. Ronald Feinman at the Delray Beach Library beginning June 16. For three Mondays, Dr. Feinman will explore three transformative presidential elections. On June 16, the election of President Lincoln will be discussed.

60 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

On June 23, the 1932 election of FDR will be explored. The series ends June 30, with an in-depth look at the 1980 election in which Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter and ushered in a new era of conservatism. The series costs $45 and the lectures run from 2-3:30 p.m. For more information visit www.delraylibrary.org Or call 561-266-0198. For the Musical Dad Dads love Johnny Cash. They just do. Luckily, the Theatre at The Arts Garage is presenting “Cash: Ring of Fire” a production that features 36 classic Cash hits. Reviews say it is as if Johnny rose from the grave to play one more concert. Tickets are $30-$45 and can be bought at www.artsgarage.org The production runs from June 20-July 13.

For the Foodie Dad Some Dads are wizards of the grill, others prefer fine dining. But one thing’s for sure. Real men love to cook. If your Dad is a foodie we recommend that you treat him to a few special ingredients this Father’s Day. Visit one of downtown’s new olive oil stores for a healthy alternative. If Dad likes spicy food check out Tabanero, a local hot sauce company owned by Delray Beach entrepreneur and philanthropist Carl DeSantis (www. tabanero.com) and don’t forget The

Saltwater Brewery or Boynton’s Due South for dad’s who love craft beer. Local artist Sal Principe has wine that’s sold at Target. Delray’s food and beverage selections are not limited to restaurants.

For Nature Loving Dads The Sandoway House Nature Center on A1A is not just for kids. Father’s will enjoy the sea life, shark feedings, astronomy offerings and sea shell collections as well. This little treasure is low-cost, has convenient hours and is located right across from the beach with plenty of parking. Check it out with Dad. He will thank you.

And she has done a great job of duplicating this house of worship to shoes. But not just any shoes. These foot adornments are more on an Olympic scale of fashion footwear. fall in love. And to a shoe lover a great pair of shoes has a sacred space in ones heart. Just ask Delray businesswoman Rita Rana. She started shopping at Footcandy shortly after they opened a year ago. So far she has found shoes that not only work well in the business world she inhabits, but she has found objects of affection for her feet. “I have a high powered job and have to dress nicely in dresses and suits. Before Footcandy arrived in Delray there were not many stores that carried upscale shoes at a fair price. Everywhere I go (even the post office) people are always saying, ‘I love those shoes where did you get them?’ I was wearing a new pair of Jimmy Choo shoes with metallic ankle strap to the Ballet at the Kravis Center and during intermission someone said to me, ‘Oh God, where did you get those shoes?’” Footcandy is the place where everyone who discovers it says, ‘where have you been all my life?’ But finding it is one of the enigmas of commerce in a city that melts and melds nicely into one long street. But if you look for this hidden retail gem you will find it under a sophisticated black rod iron awning with huge floor to ceiling windows on 1st Street and 1st Avenue, just south of Atlantic Avenue. It is there that you can saunter around the pedestal shelves and tables that house some of the most glorious shoes on earth. With names like Choo, Burch and Kate Spade you might think that this high and mighty platform was too well heeled for you, but that is not the case. They have medium height heels with elegant shades of beige and black (with and without ankle straps) and pumps in leop-

ard fur print with red heel. On the opposite side of the shoe spectrum are black and white spectator flats by Tory Burch (and other classy flats). Footcandy also has a private label collection of platform shoes that are casual in nature, but have the same uplifting properties. Some have espadrille wedge heels and others are classic wedge sandals in colors of the rainbow. If you like to stay close to the ground, and like casual sandals and flip flops, they have “The Bliss,” a Footcandy flip flop in rose gold, pink and white striped, blue, black patent, red and pink. And don’t worry about the comfort level of these shoes that are more an artists’ vision than merely something to keep you sure footed to the ground. “Sometimes people will come in here and say, ‘You don’t have anything here for me.’ When that happens I take them by the hand and show them that we can

fit them in comfortable beautiful shoes,” said Boueri, who is herself a showpiece of down-to-earth glory. Part of this newfound ability to help her clients wear the shoes of their choice is by using a soft cushioned product that grips the heel, softens the toe box (or instep) or just takes up extra space. Boueri calls them her magic tools and it appears they really are. “I bought a pump that looked great on my feet but were a little too big. Shannon suggested I use this cushy innersole in the foot of the shoe and now it fits perfect. It’s also more comfortable now, and I am so excited I can wear the shoes,” adds Rana. Since opening Footcandy Boueri has found that perfection is often a few inches away from the norm. “There are all kinds of feet, and they’re not all perfect. I have developed a way of helping people fit into shoes they love, but weren’t able to wear before. People love to be pampered and I take good care of them,” said the mother of two, who lives in Delray. You don’t have to convince financial advisor Louise Glover. She found Footcandy Delray when it opened and has been a loyal shopper ever since. “I always saw Shannon wearing terrific shoes and I was excited when she opened Footcandy. It is such an elegant store with one-of-a-kind shoes. We are so lucky to have this store in Delray.” Glover, who works for Merrill Lynch, bought her first pair of Jimmy Choo shoes at Footcandy to wear for client meetings. “They are beige in front and have black heels with a dainty ankle strap. They are feminine, yet business like enough to wear for client meetings and dinners out with clients.” The best part of shopping at Footcandy Delray, according to Glover, is that the shoes are feminine, but also work well in a business situation. So far Glover has purchased Tory Burch flats (who wouldn’t), Kate Spade heels and her coveted Jimmy Choos. “These shoes accent your legs and make them look tall and toned. It’s a fabulous shopping experience. Shannon knows her products and is passionate about what she is doing.” You bet she is. “At Footcandy Delray I get to share my passion for gorgeous shoes and handbags with other die-hard shoe lovers. I bring in unique and beautiful shoes from fabulous designers that cater to different lifestyles and taste. From my perspective, the outfit starts with the perfect shoe! I just love this store.” There is something fresh, exciting and glorious about this beautiful store that celebrates good taste, fine fashion and an artist’s eye for shoes. Stop by and see what’s behind the glistening windows and the elegant interior space. We guarantee it’s just an endorphin rush away from joy and contentment. Footcandy Delray Beach 104 S.E. From college students, to housewives, to corporate executives, to Hollywood Starlets, hair extensions are worn by women from all walks of life. If applied correctly, extensions can be a beautiful thing, they’re undetectable and non-damaging to your natural hair. If applied incorrectly, they can prove to be a nightmare. Creative Expressions:

STITCHES BY THE SEA By Diane Feen

They say that creativity is longevity. And who’s to argue? It’s been proven by scientists that if you keep your mind active – and your brain challenged – you will not only live longer but be healthier.

Judi Alweil already knew that. The New York native, who owned a needlepoint and yarn shop in Long Island, moved to South Florida four years ago. But instead of retiring she geared up for a new venture. Aptly named Stitches by the Sea she pulled out all the stops to showcase designer needlepoint canvases, yarns, fibers, ribbons and accessories for knitting and needlepoint. Her upbeat airy shop – near the Intracoastal – is a place where creativity runs deep and color soaks up the air you breathe. It is also a place that sparks creative desire for those who come to visit. “I was walking by one day and noticed this needlepoint and knitting shop. I have been doing crochet and knitting for most of my life but had never made a handbag. Just seeing them in the store inspired me to make one as well. My friend and I both picked out art deco canvases and Judi and her staff taught us how to do the beading,” said Baltimore snowbird Arlene Weitzman. There are dozens of women just like Weitzman who have found their creative purpose at Stitches by the Sea in Delray. Some come just to create (after they buy supplies) while others roam the aisles looking through dozens of beautiful needlepoint canvases and hand-dyed yarns. 66 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The center of gravity in this colorful oasis of originality is Judi, but there are others who complete this orbit of colorful creative design. Carole Piccininni (who created Carole’s Kitchen in Boca) learned to needlepoint at Judi’s shop in Long Island years ago, and came full circle by returning as a needlepoint instructor (and needlepoint master) at Stitches by the Sea. Carole, who teaches needlepoint classes, can often be seen surrounded by items of beauty. Many start out as artistic canvases but spring to life once colorful threads are added. It is this transformation and beautification process that

attracts many people to the shop to either learn to needlepoint or knit. Once they have done their creative stitchery Judi may send out the canvas to be made into a handbag, a pillow, a fan or a wall hanging. The process is so challenging – in a good way – that hanging out at Stitches by the Sea has become a passion for those who enjoy the art of creation. “I can’t wait to retire so I can spend more time at Stitches by the Sea doing needlepoint. I learned here last year and it is just a terrific creative outlet for me,” said medical consultant Caroline Fitze.

The knitting group using hand dyed yarns

Weitzman also relishes the challenge of creativity and color explosion at Stitches by the Sea. She comes at least once a week during season, but just recently was roaming the aisles looking for something to take back to Baltimore. “The people here are so fabulous and helpful. They also have a better selection than what I find back home. That is why I am looking for something to take with me,” she said. Not only can you make the handbag of your choice (that resembles art more than accessory) there are newer creative challenges to scale. Stitches by the Sea now teaches (and assists) others in making three-dimensional needlepoint animals and dolls that are stuffed to stand on their own. These life-like decorative objects have different patterns that determine their color and creative fate. You can also needlepoint a fan in traditional Oriental colors to decorate a shelf or give as a gift. It’s the expression of love that sparks the desire for some to learn how to knit or do needlepoint. Just ask newcomer Marie. She took up knitting recently and is charmed by the ability to make something out of nothing. “I love the idea of making something by hand. For my first project I am knitting a sweater for my daughter. It’s also fun to spend time at Stitches by the Sea. The people are wonderful and everyone enjoys being there. It’s a happy place.” If you love the idea of knitting but don’t know a knitting needle from a poker stick, then let Stitches by the Sea instructors be your guide. Ruth, the former owner of Art, Needle ‘N Canvas in Hallandale Beach, is at the shop a few days a week to design custom garments and give private knitting instruction. Other experienced knitting instructors are available to help people create and complete a beautiful throw, shawl, sweater or children’s item. Private classes are also offered. What makes knitting such a passionate endeavor at this shop is their exquisite selection of yarns. They range from mohair to muticolor hand-dyed yarns to loop yarns, bulky yarns, muted, twisted and textured in all colors of the rainbow (and then some). Stitches by the Sea also offers needlepoint Tallit Bags, Christmas Stockings, tree ornaments and other terrific gift items that can be personalized. “Bring in your needlepoint canvases to discuss finishing options. We have expert finishers who can create pillows, belts, handbags, bracelets, ornaments and many other items,” said Judi. They also sell needlepoint kits for children and adults, and have ample space for needlepoint or knitting parties. Women of all ages (and men if they are so inclined) are finding this creative outlet a joyful way to express themselves. “The great thing about needlepoint is that you can carry it around - it’s very therapeutic,” adds Carole. Stitches by the Sea customer Andrea sums it up pretty nicely as well. “Knitting keeps women sane.” Stitches by the Sea 710 East Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-865-5775 www.stitchesbytheseainc.com

New Summer line infused with Lavender & Buriti Oil

And, nowhere is it more evident than at One Aveda Salon in Delray Beach. Owned and operated by Sue Anger and her family, this local salon has everything you need to stop, style and soak up the luxury of pampering from the bottom up. Known for their dedication to personal attention and quality products One Aveda Salon has added three stylists because of their growing clientele. The reason business is booming is because they have the “it” factor. “We have the best beauty products in the world. We also do VoMor extensions, cut and coloring, updo’s, highlighting, botanical treatments and more,” said Anger, a certified Aveda educator. Clients also comment on the calm restorative atmosphere at this earthy salon that has big city treatments and talent. But that’s 70 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The roots of the Aveda name run deep. Known for their natural products and consciousness of being good stewards of the universe they continue to carry on this legacy.

only part of the story. They have a new collection of products guaranteed to tone down the frizz, protect your hair from the elements and add moisturize. They also have a new body wash and lotion called ShampureTM. ShampureTM has the aroma of 25 pure flower essences such as organic lavender, ylang-ylang and petit grain. “This body care system creates the ultimate aromatic bathing experience with gentle cleansing and moisture from head to toe,” said Ariel, Sue’s daughter and Operations Manager of One Aveda Salon. One other exciting new product is the Smooth Infusion™ Naturally Straight. This product progressively loosens curls with every wash. The way it works is that lightweight creams, that are plant based, hold your hair in place while organic aloe and maize fend off the frizz. “This is for women to smooth their hair

and reduce the frizz,” said Sue. It also addresses the needs of women who straighten their hair but don’t want a chemical straightener.” If you have dry unmanageable hair Aveda just launched a shampoo with Bergamot, lavender and Ginger lily. This re-formulated product moisturizes and makes hair soft and shiny. For the person with curly, coarse or unyielding tresses there is a new Aveda solution called Dry Remedy Oil. This natural product has Buriti oil and moisturizes hair by more than 40 percent from its original state. If you haven’t heard of Buriti oil you’re not alone. This rare oil comes from the fruit of the Buriti palm tree (known as the tree of life) that grows in Brazil. Buriti is extremely moisturizing and ideal for reviving dry hair, said Sue. They also have a re-formulated Sun Care

hair line with protective veil to stop the summer sun and chlorine from damaging your hair. This lightweight water resistant UV product forms a mist to help protect your hair for up to 16 hours. According to Ariel it is great for color-treated and dry hair. It has UVA/UVB filters that come from wintergreen and cinnamon bark oil as well as green tea extract organic sunflower seed oil, organic Shea butter, coconut and palm oil and has a soothing citrus aroma. Its products such as these (combined with the TLC of the staff) that makes everyone happy that One Aveda Salon is firmly situated in Delray Beach. “My hair always looks fabulous when I go to One Aveda Salon. I am always impressed by the professionalism of everyone, especially Sue and Ariel. The go above and beyond to make sure you look beautiful. This is the best salon I have ever been to,” said Karen of Delray Beach. There are a few reasons why One Aveda customers are so smitten with this earthy, yet professional setting. Sue continues to search out the best talent trained in the Aveda way. Just recently they hired Liz, who comes from Indiana, and has 25 years of experience in coloring and styling hair. They also added new Aveda colors that take dull hair and make it shine in tandem with the exuberance of the client’s personality. “We now have vibrant hair colors (that can be combined) like intense reds, pinks, purple and blue. We are also using techniques to tie dye hair in multiple colors. As the Aveda Artistic Director for Hair Color, Michael Black likes

to say, ‘It’s about bringing out someone’s personality, without trying to bend it.’” With summer upon us both Ariel and Sue want everyone to know about their new Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque. This intensive cream restores sun-exposed hair to its natural luster and helps defend against free radicals. The Morikue™ protein helps restore weakened hair and the oils and vitamins moisturize it. What more can you ask for? Well there is one more thing that One Aveda Salon is touting in their shop – it’s their new line of Professional Tools. These blow dryers, curling wands and flat irons were created by celebrity stylists Kevin Ryan and Frank Rizzieri. Included in this new selection of R-Session Pro Tools is an Ionic Dyer that infuses the hair with ions to make it silky and shiny. There are also boar bristle brushes in all shapes for detangling, finishing and styling. “These new Pro styling tools are less damaging, heat faster and last longer than other tools for the hair. When you have these professional dryers and curling irons you get the same results at home that you would get at a salon,” said Ariel. Aveda has strict standards of excellence, which is why Sue and Ariel adhere to the same high standards of hair care. They can make you look and feel beautiful, all you have to do is ask. PARKING

{

By LINDA BROWN

Just the word conjures up all kinds of thoughts, ideas, worries and the like.

Back in the 1980s, city leaders dreamed of a day when downtown Delray would have a parking problem. Wouldn’t it be nice, they said, if Atlantic Avenue and Pineapple Grove were so successful that we would have a parking problem? In the early 2000s, the city commissions wrestled with parking and hired a dedicated parking specialist to help devise policy, manage lots and plan new facilities including the courthouse/library garage, the Federspiel garage and the mixed-use Old School Square garage which has over 500 spots while also accommodating the Chamber of Commerce and the Arts Garage. After the facilities were built, yet another city commission authorized a parking study that critics say went straight on a shelf. Today, the debate is whether to charge for parking. And Mayor Cary Glick72 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

stein has made it clear that he won’t dodge the issue any longer. Last month, Glickstein brought parking guru Donald Shoup to Delray for a lecture entitled “The High Cost of Free Parking,” a title based on UCLA Professor Shoup’s landmark book on the subject. Shoup is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on parking. As a result, Shoup lectures in cities near and far and his fans call themselves Shoupistas. Mayor Glickstein called Shoup a rock star and the “yoda” of parking. Basically, Shoup believes that there is no such thing as free parking, even if you don’t charge or have meters. Why? Because maintaining, securing, cleaning, managing and paying debt service on garages and lots has a real cost to communities. “We tend to ignore the asphalt jungle when we’re parked in it,” says Shoup. “The cost of parking doesn’t cease to exist because we don’t pay for it. One structured parking space costs more than the entire retirement savings of most families.” Shoup says many cities tend to make two mistakes: free curbside parking and lots of off street parking. He suggests three solutions: • Charge the right price for curb parking • Remove or reduce off street parking requirements

• Establish parking benefit districts where meter revenue is used to improve the streets where the revenue is generated. Shoup says establishing the right price for parking takes times and patience. You want pricing that generates some vacancy, but doesn’t chase everyone away. “Cities have a limited amount of money to help poor people,” he says. “Is subsidizing parking for everyone a good idea? I think it’s a bad idea. We didn’t become a great nation by freeloading. I don’t want to go through life paying for everyone else’s parking.” Shoup says the subsidy of free parking is baked into other costs including the cost of food and housing. He believes that if cities eliminate free parking they will reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption because drivers won’t be cruising streets in search of a free space. If the money generated is used to pay for improvements, it will become a popular program and is good for economic development. As for parking requirements, he politely chided planners for thinking they know how much parking a retail store or restaurant requires. He prefers that the market place dictate the amount of parking. Shoup’s theories, while popular in some quarters and respected, also have their share of critics. There has been a long time resistance among some merchants on Atlantic Avenue to paid parking and meters. As for using the revenue to improve the streets where the money is generated—some in the audience said Atlantic Ave has already been improved. Regardless, it appears that parking will be front and center with the new commission. Stay tuned.

Dare I say the answer is only a phone call away? And on top of that, you can get an office (in the size you need) with phone, cable and answering service within 20 minutes of signing a lease. Sound too good to be true – it’s not. That’s because Gary Goldfarb had the vision (and smarts) to renovate the second floor of his building on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and 5th Avenue. If you know the building then you know it was the former home of the Antique Mall and current home to Starbucks. This new office suite - that opened in January - has been a huge success. Part of the reason is that you get high speed cable, telephone, Wi-Fi, unlimited phone service, a conference room (with video equipment) a desk and chair at a nominal fee. The office suites are also manned with security at the front desk at all times, leaving the unknown or uninvited exactly where they belong – outside. “I wanted to do everything here first class. We have sandblasted glass doors, unique artwork, leather chairs in the conference room, keyless entrance to each suite and reinforced steel on the wall to support a TV. We have professional people working here and we make sure it is quiet, safe and private,” said Goldfarb, who resides in Boca Raton but enjoys life in Delray Beach. Goldfarb has created 504 Office Suites with what he calls a state-of-the-art objective. There is a top of the line copy machine 74 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Do you have a thriving business but find that your office expenses are eating into your bottom line? Well, worry no more. There is a new solution that will satisfy your need for a great location, top security, low monthly cost, super high speed internet and cable with no set-up fee.

up front, state-of-the-art communications system, 20,000 feet of cable wire, 100Mbps of wired internet and a meeting room complete with orange doughnut chairs (that are heavenly). There is sufficient wiring for a refrigerator in your suite (if you so desire) and suites can be combined if you need more space. There’s another thing that Goldfarb is excited about. “We are in the best location. It’s the center of town and when you leave here you are in an adult playground. The saying in Delray Beach is - ‘Live – Work – Play in Delray

Beach.’ It’s The Best Happy Hour ever.” To make working effortless and low maintenance, 504 Office Suites provides a communication system that can answer your phone, take messages and send them to your computer or cell phone. They can also arrange for a desk and chair to be delivered to your suite (for a nominal charge). And if you get hungry – there is no need to look far - there is a Deli and Starbucks on the premises. There’s one other thing that Goldfarb wants to let everyone to know. “There is a

huge misconception here. Starbucks serves a lot of people each day, and on occasion they drink their coffee outside. Some people think these people are drifters, but that’s not true. They are business people, tourists or locals just having coffee or a snack. The premises are safe and secure at all times.” To make sure that safety is his prime objective (aside from state-of-the-art technology) Goldfarb always has a receptionist at the front desk to make sure everyone who enters has to sign in. “We attract professionals here – lawyers, software developers, a travel agency, realtors, a wine distributor One of our great state of the art office suites: Marcus, Jessica, and Ryan of Quality Software Corp

Tia Crystal the Artist, is a woman that many people would love to meet. From a young age Tia knew that she had an ability to help people move through pain… After meeting Tia I invited her to come over to meet my wife Maxine who has had Parkinson’s for the past 14 years.

We sat and spoke about life in general and the effects of Parkinson’s and the freezing experience Maxine has on a daily basis. During our conversation Maxine went into a freeze. Instantly Tia took hold of Max’s left hand and began speaking softly to her. As they spoke Tia gently reassured her and I saw Maxine relax and close her eyes, something she has never done before during a freeze. I felt at that moment a deep connection between them and left the room quietly for them to be alone. An hour later I crept back in to see if there was any progress, and to my amazement I looked down at Tia holding Maxine’s hand with a blue aura about it. Maxine was moving out of a freeze and Tia’s energy was being transferred into Maxine’s body. I could not believe my eyes! The relief in Maxine and how relaxed she seemed was amazing. In a very short space of time I was able to witness Maxine moving with ease as if the freeze had never happened and with a twinkle in her beautiful eyes. Who is Tia Crystal? She is a young British woman who comes into one’s life and touches it with deep and positive joy. In just 10 short years she has become a selftaught international award-winning artist, her unique style of work is unmatched. Created over time her paintings amass with semi-precious stones. Her paintings can take anything from 6 weeks to a year to finish. 76 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

This is her Story: I felt that my life had changed. Was it because I had turned 40? Forty years of thinking I knew who I was but still feeling a stranger to me. Was it because I still felt the little girl inside me yearning to understand how to play and live a life full of joy and happiness in a world that at times can be very cruel? I had always questioned my life. Why am I here? How did I come here? As a child I could hear voices, I felt this was normal, actually it felt more real to me than the world I lived in. I was a big daydreamer. I dreaded showing my parents my report card as they showed “Day Dreaming” as lack of concentration receiving D grades each year. How can we know who we are if we live a life that is set out for us, and expected of us? I was at times a rebel but you want to belong so you conform, you become the pleaser. At this time of my life I was Dyslexic...Today I am Artistic… So at 40 my life changed forever. In a dream one night I received a message that I was to leave London for Italy to mediate and walk in silence. This would take me completely out of my comfort zone... Firstly to travel alone is something I would never do. I was a north London suburban mom with three small children. I had a daily routine and responsibilities. There was carpooling, homework and soccer practice and to add

to that I worked full time at my interior design company. I couldn’t just leave and go away on my own. I had to be the best mom, wife, daughter, friend...It was always about someone else...Somehow I was never in the equation. Maybe that was the pattern I had set very early on without knowing it... However, after having that dream I organized my kids and with my husband’s blessing I went, I actually did it! Three days later I left London and went to Assisi in Italy and into a world that changed me forever. I walked in silence for 10 days on my own.I got to fall in love with the ‘me’ who just wanted to be noticed by me...I reconnected to my daydreams, my child like joy of discovery and tasting the nectar of life. I ripped off my chains of self-doubt, thinking I wasn’t enough.With the breeze in my hair and the rays of sunlight in my eyes.... I was breathing ‘fresh air’ for the first time. On an early morning whilst walking in a valley I noticed out of the corner of my eye a paint brush under a bush. When I bent down to pick it up, lying next to it was a bottle top with a T on it. I had this deep feeling inside that there was a much bigger meaning unfolding in my life, that my life was about to change and I didn’t have a clue in what way...and I didn’t care. I didn’t need to know... It was then that I realized that life is a

journey of discovery, and the best way to enjoy this journey is to trust and let go of control. In that moment I knew that there was a divine message being shown to me. To this day I am still in awe of how perfect the journey of life is when we are more relaxed and peaceful within ourselves. I had finally let go. My mind wasn’t racing with things I had to or needed to do... That paintbrush and its companion, the lid, were my messengers that day. Ten days later I left Italy, alive with that knowledge and wisdom that is priceless... I learnt the meaning of ‘Inner Peace’. Today I am able to show my children by example how to dream the dream and never look back. To trust in themselves and live life riding the waves of infinite possibilities. I have learnt a new language, the one that I live and breatheevery day. Today I am Tia Crystal the Artist, Healer, Visionary... Tia’s Art hangs in Galleries around the world. In 2012 she was voted top10 Artist at the NY Art Expo. Her paint brush story was featured in a movie as the success story from nothing to something.... Today Tia spends most of her time working on private commissioned Art pieces and her philanthropic work. Delray Beach Offers Coolest Fourth of July Celebration By Gary Schweikhart

{

It may be hot in South Florida in July, but when it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July, there’s no place cooler to be than Delray Beach.

Photos by Melissa Korman

“Delray Beach has a reputation for a great party and people come here from all over South Florida to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, which produces the celebration for the City of Delray Beach “When they get here they see first hand that it’s always cool in Delray Beach.” Falling on a Friday this year, the July Fourth celebration is a great way to kick off a holiday weekend, with something going on for just about everyone. A family tradition that has been taking place for decades, Delray Beach’s Fourth of July festivities include a sand-sculpting contest on the beach that begins at 8 a.m. followed by an afternoon packed with entertainment as well as food and merchandise vendors – all culminating in what is

78 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

regarded as the best fireworks display in all of South Florida. “Our Fourth of July celebration is one more way for us to showcase all that Delray Beach has to offer,” Immelman said. “Many of our downtown shops and restaurants, especially those east of the Intracoastal Waterway, are open during the holiday and “look for weekend specials from the Delray Beach Marriott and our other great hotels.” This year, the annual sand-sculpting contest will again be complemented with a large-scale sand sculpture from Team Sandtastic, a professional sand-sculpting group known for amazing works. By 2 p.m. portions of Atlantic Avenue east of the Intracoastal Waterway and portions of State Road A1A near Atlantic Avenue will be closed in preparation for the 3 p.m. flagraising ceremony featuring representatives of the U.S. military. At 3:30 p.m., a variety of activities begin, including live entertainment – which will go on continuously throughout the evening – as well as children’s activities such as face painting, flag making activities, sidewalk chalk art and a photo booth. Also on hand for both kids and adults will be a mini-golf course from Putt’n Around along with several beach activities and the popular Kid’s Splash Zone, which promises to be the patriotic holiday’s biggest cool down event at $3 each or $15 for an all-day pass. Among those artists performing throughout the evening will be The Kinected, a fourpiece hybrid rock band frequently appearing at Boston’s on the Beach. To help visitors stay comfortable, this year’s celebration will include a “cool down”

tent, complete with misters to help beat the heat. For those who want to cool down with a cool drink, Boston’s, Caffe Luna Rosa and Burger Fi are teaming up to create a beachside beer garden. Of course, the highlight of the celebration is one of South Florida’s largest and longest fireworks show, put on by Zambelli Fireworks and synchronized to music available on simulcast on Wild 95.5. The 20-25 minute show will feature more than 500 unique shells that are guaranteed to produce oohs and ahs from the crowd. This year, the fireworks will be launched just north of the Marriott Delray Beach. “It really is an amazing firework display,” says Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of the DBMC. “We’re definitely keeping it cool at what will be the hottest Fourth of July celebration in South Florida.” For more information about the Fourth of July Celebration visit www.JulyFourthDelrayBeach.com. To find out more about what else Delray Beach has to offer this summer and to learn about hotel holiday specials, visit www.visitdelraybeach.org/hot and look for travel specials and packages. A Holistic Approach to

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

Optimal Health “Everyone tells me how great I look for my age, but I don’t feel great inside.” Celeste did look great, either from her modelesque figure, breast implants, Botox, or the combination of all three. Looking at her new patient questionnaire, however, I had to agree, she wasn’t as healthy as she looked. Celeste continued, “My friend Jena raves about you and handed me one of your brochures. She said you made her feel twenty years younger. I want to get what she’s getting!” “Patient-to-patient referral has always been my best source of new patients, but rather than ‘selling the same program’ of tests, supplements, and hormones to everybody, whether they need it or not, I do what a board-certified physician is trained to do, I evaluate each patient individually. Tell me, if there was a miracle tonight, what would be different tomorrow?” “How about tonight? I’d sleep. It seems that I’m up at 3:15 like clockwork every morning to pee, and then I can’t get back to sleep until hours later. And when I wake up for real, I’m destroyed.” “God created night then day; night came first because it’s so important. I want you to wake up fully refreshed, anticipating your day.” “How can I look forward to things when my clothes don’t fit, I need to use hair extensions and acrylics, everything I eat bloats me to where I’m 5-months pregnant, and my girlfriends have more libido towards my husband than I do?” Luckily, not only do I have 80+ minutes to spend with new patients, I also had a box of tissues to hand to Celeste. “All of this is fixable. Instead of using ‘pharmacy’ (or ‘green pharmacy’ of vitamins and hormones) to cover up your symptoms, I prefer a Functional Medicine approach to make your body work properly, the way it did in your 20’s.” “Just up to a few years ago, I was able to eat great tasting food without running to the bathroom, drink champagne at charity events, and still be able to play tennis the next day. Now I’m just spent.” “I’ve seen all this before, and I’m confident we can get you back to optimum health. Let’s finish off our assessment. Besides my history and physical exam, there are some tests I need. Even though you have a concierge physician who did a screening panel, I need to look in depth at your adrenals, thyroid, and other hormones. Food allergies and dysbiosis (bad bacteria in your gut) can cause that bloating, and vitamin insufficiencies are common enough that we have to test for those as well.” “Anything we can start off now?” “Yes! I’ve been practicing this way for over a dozen years, and based upon what I know now, we can start with a little of everything: behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, stuff like that.” I continued, “You don’t have to change your life drastically, but little things will make a big difference.” “Like what?”

offer injections “ofI dovitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients. ”

“You already take baths, so we’re going to add Epsom Salts (to absorb magnesium through your skin) to make your skin less dry, your muscles less achy, and your sleep better. I have a ‘detox diet’ handout that mentions safe foods to eat, but if you just think ‘protein and colorful vegetables and fruits’, you’ll do okay. Before you leave, I’ll teach you a stretch that decreases that ‘pouch’ at your beltline, and there are a few vitamins that are so obvious for you to start with (but safe to take too).” “But what about that IV therapy that Jena told me about?” “When patients are really sick, or are trying to get the most optimal results yesterday, I do offer injections of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients. For example, iron injections rapidly help hair growth, brittle nails, fatigue, memory/concentration, and muscle cramps (restless legs).” Celeste’s testing did show causes for all her symptoms and on her second visit, a plan specific to her was put in place. Three months later, she was glowing and her visits were now spaced out to where she only had to be seen once every six months. “Next week you get to see both my husband and daughter. I just booked a family trip to tour the volcanoes in Hawaii. I need them to keep up with me.” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a board-certified family medicine physician in private practice in Boca Raton. special feature ║ delray beach center for the arts at Old school square

Cornell Museum Presents an Extraordinary, New Exhibit for Summer Delray Beach Center for the Arts announces another premiere art exhibition at the Cornell Museum of Art & American Culture. “From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Paper as Art” will amaze visitors from May 23rd through August 24th, 2014. Step inside the museum’s intimate gallery spaces and discover a world where ordinary paper has been transformed into extraordinary works of art! Paper, when manipulated, sculpted or cut into two and three dimensional art, can surprise the viewer with its flexibility, intricacy and beauty. This exhibit features exquisite works by 16 artists, who have been featured in galleries around the world. About the Artists: Bruce Helander (Palm Beach) specializes in collage and assemblage and has been called, “… arguably the most recognized and successful collage artist in the country...” by City Link magazine. His work is in over 50 major museum collections from New York to Los Angeles. Michelle “Mizou” Chassaing (Delray Beach) is a collage artist from France. Many of her works are inspired by her travels to Europe and the South of France, where she spends time each year. Hina Aoyama lives and works in Japan. She describes her art as “super fine lacypaper-cuttings done by a simple pair of scissors.” Beth Appleton (north Florida) is known for her watercolor/cut paper assemblages, has developed a unique style infusing brilliant colors and vitality. Cara Barer (Houston) transforms books into art by sculpting them, dyeing them and then presenting them as objects of beauty through the medium of photography. Charles Clary (Tennessee) uses layered paper to build intriguing “land formations” that mimic viral colonies and concentric sound waves. 82 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Cornell Museum PaperArt, Beth Appleton - Biosphere

Jupi Das (Philadelphia) was born in India and began paper cutting during a short stay in Beijing, China. Her work pays homage to the ancient tradition of paper cutting with elements from Chinese, Japanese, German and Swiss traditions added. Brian Dettmer (Atlanta) transforms out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books and dictionaries into sculptures.

Cornell Museum PaperArt Amy Genser - Full Bloom

Amy Genser (West Hartford) cuts, rolls and combines paper and paint to explore her obsession with texture, pattern, and color inspired by natural forms and organic processes. Will Kurtz (Brooklyn) is a figurative art-

ist, who creates life-size paper sculptures of people and other subjects that evoke emotion, compassion, empathy, sympathy and humor. Bovey Lee (Pittsburgh) is a cut paper artist from Hong Kong. She hand cuts each work on a single sheet of Chinese xuan (rice) paper backed with silk using no rulers or stencils. Hiromi Moneyhun (Jacksonville) is a paper-cut artist from Kyoto, Japan. With no formal art training, Hiromi’s 3-D works combine traditional Japanese visual art forms with “super-modernity.” Jeremy Pantoja (Austin) is a cut paper artist, who combines drawings and cut paper to create his whimsical pieces. Alex Queral (Miami) carves faces into ordinary phone books by literally peeling away the pages like the skin of an onion to reveal the portrait within. Matthew Rose lives and works in Paris, France and is known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor installations. Annie Vought (Oakland) creates intricate, lace-like tributes to the written word by cutting away the words of poems and letters by a myriad of authors. The Cornell Museum is located at the corner of Atlantic and Swinton Avenues. New hours/admission: Tuesday-Sunday, 10 am – 4:30 pm; closed Monday and major holidays; $5 for all; members and children under 6 are free. Delray Beach Center for the Arts, located at Old School Square in the heart of downtown Delray Beach, offers world-class events, theater, exhibits and learning opportunities. JEREMY OFFICE

Financial Expert, Family Man And Community Leader By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

If you hang around financial Guru Jeremy Office you might begin to believe that anything is possible. That’s because he knows it’s true.

Office didn’t base this can-do attitude on any one thing, yet attributes it to intellectual maturation. Like Oprah Winfrey, Office knows the power of introspection and can spot an “Aha Moment” a mile away. That’s what happened when he graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1998. “After taking my last class I loaded my stuff into my SUV and drove to South Florida.” Office may not have known what he wanted to do then, but those around him knew he was destined for greatness. His first real job was with a tech company (Daleen Technologies) that grew from 50 employees to 600 in three years. After the tech bubble burst, Office left Daleen, but didn’t stray far from his financial roots. His next move took a leap of faith and a lot of hard work. “I went to work as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch with no experience. A friend of mine who worked there said to me, ‘you love people and you’re smart, come work with us.’” So that’s what he did. Office spent two years in a training program at Merrill Lynch and got his Series 7, 66 and other Insurance licenses. He also completed an MBA Program (on weekends) at University of Florida. Within a few years Office had become Merrill Lynch’s youngest Sales Manager in the country. It was quite a feat considering they were the number one complex of all Merrill offices in the world. It is easy to assume that this tall handsome Dayton, Ohio native just got lucky, but that’s not the case. All you have to do is listen to his theories of life and his outlook on mankind and you realize that this well read fellow is one smart cookie. “There is one thing I focus on and that is building great relationships and people connections. I really care about people.” Say what? A CEO of a financial firm, who worked with over 200 clients while at Merrill Lynch, really cares about people? If this seems like an oxymoron it’s not. Because, behind the man who sits at a desk with three computer screens and a TV has a brain always ready to disperse his truth. Not just about stock prices or data analysis, but about the big picture. “I have a Superhero Theory,” he says rather nonchalantly. “We all have super powers, but the people

June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

who are truly great are those who have found theirs.” Office goes on to explain that he has been obsessed with Batman since the age of three, but that in its most refined form the Batman analogy boils down to the indomitable spirit that we all possess. “Batman has no superpowers but his strength lies in his drive and passion,” said the father of three married to statuesque beauty and former fitness competitor Sherry. Drive and passion have been the lightning rod that led Office to achieve what some would classify as the top of the financial food chain. He is currently the Principal at Maclendon Wealth Management, a multi-family office that caters to successful, affluent individuals and businesses looking for specialized wealth management services. Although the firm is based on traditional values, sophisticated knowledge and custom-tailored solutions, its founder has such a large reservoir of education and certificates it would make Warren Buffet blush. He is a Certified Financial Planner, Certified Investment Management Analyst (from The Wharton School), Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor SM, Bloomberg Product Certification (Equities, Fixed Income and Foreign Exchange) and has a Ph.D. from Lynn University (with honors) in global leadership and management. But that’s not all. Office is also the Managing Partner at SJO Worldwide, one of the only private venture holding companies in Delray Beach. “We specialize in investing in small to medium-sized companies in private and public offerings. There is tremendous human capital in Delray Beach with a lot of very bright people. It’s not about just making money, it’s about creating value.” Value and values are platforms for this family man to move things forward in his life - and for those around him. They have a staff of specialists at their idyllic headquarters in Delray Beach as well as a second office in Dallas, Texas. The good news is that for the first time in their three-year history Maclendon is now taking new clients. Not only does Office admit to being a critical thinker – with a head for intellectual property – but he reads ev-

erything he can get his hands on about micro-economics, technology, behavioral finance nuance, business and world affairs. That may be the reason he is a NFLPA Registered Player Financial Advisor for the NFL Players Association. He also gives motivational and financial speeches at colleges and organizations. Office works between 70 and 80 hours a week, but still has time to get involved in charitable and community organizations such as the SJO Foundation (his foundation that supports a wide variety of charities), The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Board, the Delray Education Board and the Lynn University Business School Advisory Board. As a way of honoring his grandfather Howard Isaacson, Office has created an endowment for the Howard Isaacson Innovation Challenge at Lynn University. This award provides Lynn students the opportunity to take a new product or business idea and develop a pitch for investors and the marketplace. Although the wheels of intellectual pursuit and financial acumen are always turning in Office’s head (and heart) he is also a devoted family man. He calls himself a “super family guy” and finds time to relish his role as father to nine-yearold Macie, seven-year-old Jaedon and three-year-old Lennox. They take global family trips once a year (this year they’re cruising the Baltic Sea) and share the wisdom of Office’s valuable and heartfelt life lessons. “I tell my kids every morning (before they go to school) to be great and always strive to grow. All we have is our legacy and you have to try your hardest to make life magical.” If you ask those around him they will tell you that magic follows Office around like fairy dust. “Jeremy has always been a very dynamic person who cares deeply about his family and friends. He has what many describe as the ‘it factor.’ People have always gravitated towards him, professionally and socially. I always knew he would be successful and a positive influence to those around him,” said childhood friend Colin Spencer. TONY’S DELI Gourmet Food In A Flash By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

If you know downtown Delray Beach then you’ve probably seen the corner store known as Tony’s Deli. Although this family business has been in existence for the past 25 years there have been a lot of changes.

The first one is location. Six years ago Tony’s Deli moved to Atlantic Avenue and 3rd in the center of town. The more important thing to note (if you are hungry) is that the Deli portion of the local store was taken over by Robert Conte a year and a half ago. Conte, who graduated from the French Culinary Institute, also owned a successful restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale called Regalo. Not one to retire, Conte began whipping up his favorite deli dishes for those on the run and others who wanted to relax at the tables outdoors. Famous for his marinated boneless chicken thigh dinner or sub, homemade tuna and chicken salad, roast beef, meatball subs and fried rice, Conte wanted to add a little bit more to his kitchen. That is why he welcomed Andrew Castardi as his partner in this growing fast food fest. The two of them are now cooking 96

up homemade dinners, fresh pasta (changes daily), homemade mozzarella cheese, meatball and chicken parmesan subs and dinners as well as a selection of sandwiches and desserts. Castardi has a long history of bringing fine fare to the dinner table. His father Tony owned a chain of pizzerias in Long Island and Queens and at the age of 12 Castardi was in the kitchen cooking by 2 am. His dedication to his family’s tradition has never waned. In South Florida Castardi worked in a large gourmet deli cooking up wonderful fresh food that exceeded everyone’s expectations. That is exactly why Conte and Castardi are the perfect A-team to cook up a storm in their tiny, yet compact corner across from the Courthouse and next to the Tennis Center on Atlantic Avenue. “We prepare fresh food every day. Some days we have pork chops or fresh Tilapia, calzones or Stromboli. But we always have meatball and chicken Parmesan subs and dinners as well as sausage, onion and pepper subs, turkey off the frame and seafood salad. “We also serve breakfast as early as 6:30,” said Conte. Castardi is famous for his Italian hot dogs wrapped in pizza dough, sausage, onion and pepper subs and Stromboli. They also make oven roasted turkey, fresh homemade roast

beef, ham as well as prosciutto, tomato and lettuce with mozzarella baked in pizza dough. Their other claim to fame is delicious chicken wings baked in a savory sauce and served boneless. The chicken wings come with a variety of sauces such as ranch, honey mustard and blue cheese. They also have mashed potatoes and roasted potatoes as well as fresh fried rice with scallions and onions sautéed on the grill. All sandwiches can be served on either rye bread, multigrain, white, Kaiser rolls, subs, Italian bread or wraps. The fresh white albacore tuna sandwich is a favorite (made every day) and the salads are a welcome addition for those who enjoy a healthy alternative. You can add grilled chicken, tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad or seafood salad to your salad as well. Tony’s Deli is also famous for their breakfast – that can range from an egg sandwich with fried eggs, bacon and cheese on a Kaiser roll to pancakes, French toast, potatoes or grits. Conte assures guests that although food prices have skyrocketed he has kept his prices down to earth. If you are on your way home late at night you can stop by Tony’s Deli and pick up one of their homemade sandwiches. Although Robert and Andrew are not there late at night there is always someone inside to help you. They also

have special desserts such as Red Velvet cake, Tiramisu, brownies and other assorted treats to sooth your sweet tooth. Both Robert and Andrew have been cooking up homemade meals and buffets for clients for many years they also cater special events. They will make sure your culinary requests are met to your specifications and with your taste buds in mind. They also make homemade soups and other dishes upon request. If you’re having an office party or want to cater an event Robert and Andrew will make sure it happens. They also specialize in putting together buffets or platters for any occasion or event. If you ask the locals they will tell you how great this hidden little deli really is. “This place has super friendly service and great fresh cooked food. They are happy to customize any order for you to eat inside or outside. They are also happy to put your food in a to-go box if you want it that way,” said Kacey. Next time you’re passing Tony’s Deli stop by and say hello to Robert and Andrew. They’ll be the guys behind the counter cooking up something special with you in mind. ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephanie IMMELMAN

Photo by Norman Garret, courtesy of the Delray Camera Shop

Sons of Anarchy These young entrepreneurs have already made their mark on the Grove. Chung Seo opened Coffee District and it instantly became a hit with locals. John Paul Kline’s place, 3rd and 3rd is the hottest new restaurant in town and Ryan Boylston, who started Woo Creative, lends his time and creativity to the Grove by serving on the Arts District Board as well as creating the new branding and imagery that you will see in Pineapple Grove in the near future.

Ryan Boylston JP Kline

Chung Seo

I’m proud to be a part of the Grove. I’m glad my place can serve as a local community meeting place, day and night.

110 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Don’t let too much progress ruin the progresso. Let artists create in their environment and all will survive in our artist districts. As we should always feel for a solid core, not just covering a rotten core with plastic art. Potential will then stay infinite and, able to grow, as all art comes from a solid core, no matter the medium.

Having sat on the board of the Pineapple Grove Arts District for the last four years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about its roots, its place in our city and the things that make it a truly unique downtown district. As it continues to grow with boutiques, salons, restaurants, galleries and the like, I look forward to the launch of the new logo and unveiling of the North gateway feature... elements that will not only add character, but further bolster the district’s image.

What type of diet should my cats be eating?

C

ats are very unique. They are mysterious, stealth, exotic creatures with very different genetics than any other creature on earth. They are hunters, an obligate carnivore that require a supply of fresh meat and fish to maintain optimal health. Our domestic cats are descendents of African wildcats. We know that all animals have very specific nutritional requirements for different body functions. These nutrients are normally available when they eat a species appropriate diet. As descendents of a desert animal, cats require food as their source for dietary hydration. Nowhere in nature do you find any creature eating a processed food that has artificial colors and flavors to make it palatable. Nowhere in nature will you find foods that require added vitamins and minerals in order to make the animal stronger or healthier. When you walk down the cat food aisle in your local supermarket or pet food store, you rarely see a food that meets the nutritional requirements that our cats need. You will see fancy packages of dry kibble with pictures of everything from mountain lions to Persian cats along with images of fresh ingredients

such as fish, chicken breast, eggs and vegetables. When you open that package, do you see or smell that fresh meat and fish? Why does an obligate carnivore need vegetables? Where in nature do cats eat vegetables or dry, highly processed cooked food? You will also find a plethora of canned and pouch foods that, while providing the moisture and hydration requirements, are still highly processed, cooked and full of fillers. These processed foods also contain a long list of chemical vitamins, minerals, colors, flavors, preservatives as well as processing chemicals. Many of these products are labeled “natural and appropriate” as well as complete and balanced. Are any of these ingredients truly natural as they should be if found in nature? Where would you find a natural “flavor plant” or “vitamin tree?” Do felines stalk, kill and eat wheat or corn plants? I am being facetious here. The following is actually content from a top veterinary brand label; “Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Pork Fat, Powdered Cellulose, Pea Bran Meal, Dried Egg Product, Wheat Gluten, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Liver Flavor.” Do these ingredients sound like carnivore appropriate foods?

Our feline friends suffer from many health challenges when fed an inappropriate diet such as urinary infections, crystals and bladder stones, diabetes, cancers, irritable bowel, skin and dental issues, as well as allergies and skin problems. In a truly wild state these health challenges are unheard of. Research and scientific studies confirm not only that improper nutrition contributes to all of these conditions, but that also switching to a biologically appropriate diet provides the cures. Our cats, being desert creatures, should never be given a dry kibble diet. Their food always needs to be wet. As an obligate carnivore, it must acquire animal proteins and fats from fish, meat, poultry and eggs. It should never be left out as free choice but fed as a meal and removed when they are done, similar to what they would do in nature. The foods also need to be rotated with different varieties daily to provide the natural balances of a dynamic being. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “From The Heart - Letters To The Happy Couple” “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”- Coco Chanel Dear George: It was a sad day when I found out. YOU, the perpetual bachelor got engaged. Since you portrayed Dr. Douglas Ross on ER, you have been my “IT” guy. Classic good looks, politically engaged and totally impossible to tie down. It’s clear that you are without a doubt, as People Magazine bestowed upon you…the Sexiest Man Alive and in my book, the hottest thing since sliced bread. I won’t be the sore loser. It’s not like I thought I ever had a chance with you anyway. But a girl can dream right? My solace comes from that fact that I am probably much closer to resembling Amal Alamuddin than to your ex-girlfriend Stacy Keibler. Kudos to you Georgie, for having the smarts to date “UP.” Not like having a Hollywood girlfriend is wrong but like every other Hollywood couple, it makes us common folk feel like we aren’t good enough. Your buddy Matt Damon’s sense of reality must have rubbed off on you. Good for him, for setting such a great example by marrying one of “us” and good for you, for watching closely and taking his lead! As a single 43 year old career woman, I now have a glimmer of hope that not all men of your stature and fame and even regular “Joes” with a pocket full of cash and some career success, require the likes of the perfect Hollywood arm candy. There is a great deal to be said about an attractive, single woman who is educated, cultured, well traveled and INDEPENDENT. With Amal, you got all this and a bag of chips. It’s refreshing to know that you clearly don’t feel threatened by this strong willed, smart, 36 year old accomplished woman. What she has achieved professionally outweighs your professional acting career by eons, and proves that there is something ever so sexy about a career woman who is kicking ass and taking names. Congratulations on your engagement and may you continue to put 114 June 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

this amazing lady on a pedestal where she belongs. Oh and by the way, if it doesn’t work out, my # is 561… Dear Amal: YOU GO GIRL!! What a role model you are to me and my single girlfriends. You have paved the way for the rest of us and proved that a classy lady with brains and substance eventually lands the “catch.” So now, I ask you, other than being attractive, well spoken and politically connected, what else does it take to land someone as hot as Clooney? Did you play it coy? Did you act helpless and a little ditzy? I doubt either. You probably went about your fabulous life without a care in the world and let him chase you. You probably didn’t act like the girl who always needs to be saved. I imagine or I hope, you stood strong and proud, probably in 5 inch designer heels and recited the mantra “Build it, and HE will come.” Looking in from the outside, I must give you props because whatever formula you used, it worked.

You may even want to trademark or copyright your “Blueprint to Bling,” because believe me girlfriend, you would make millions! Your engagement should be deemed as a vicarious triumph for the rest of the single ladies out there. There is nothing wrong with putting yourself first; obtaining a degree or degrees, working hard to build a career you can be proud of and having a life that doesn’t revolve around a mate. The infamous collegiate joke about going to school to get your “MRS” doesn’t even evoke a giggle now, when we look at you. You proved them all wrong! Instead you stayed the course, invested in yourself, the most important one of all. Critics may say you took your eye off the ball and that your ship has sailed, it’s too late for you. NOT UNLESS YOU WANT TO MARRY GEORGE CLOONEY! I guess you deleted the email about men not liking smart woman. You know the theory that gets reinforced in pop culture where women should dumb it down so they appear to be perky, flirty, without opinion…all to make him fall in love with you. Amal, I look at you with envy as you will get the fairy tale ending- a dream come true for a non-famous hard working, stunning woman. I look at your accomplishments and believe that you lead a life that is already full. Here’s hoping that your impending nuptials add a wondrous new dimension to your already fabulous existence. There is no better aphrodisiac than a happy woman with a fulfilled life who is passionate about something besides the 7+ carat on her ring finger. Just ask George! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

Growing a New Generation of Entrepreneurs

{

Last month, Delray’s very own Beth Johnston asked me if I would speak to the latest class of YEA students. YEA stands for Young Entrepreneurs Academy, a program run by the Boca Chamber to encourage students in grades 7-12 to develop business plans and actual businesses.

The energy in the room was electric as students shared their entrepreneurial dreams and visions. I heard several exciting pitches from students who had 30 weeks in the program and countless hours wrestling with their ideas and business models. I left enthused, energized and encouraged for our future. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well and the next generation is raring to go. The students were from Boca High, Boca Prep, Atlantic High, Donna Klein Jewish Academy and Spanish River High School and by a show of hands mostly all wanted to launch their businesses right here at home. That’s the good news and that’s the opportunity; but only if we act immediately. The next generation won’t be waiting for us. We have to be ready for them and offer them the kind of lifestyle, amenities and ecosystem they’ll need to lead us into the future. If we don’t—off they go to cities and regions that offer what they need. So what do they need? More programs like YEA and Spanish River’s Entrepreneurship Academy. Atlantic High has several good career academies—but they also need to be teaching entrepreneurship. Same goes

for Village Academy and Carver Middle—you are never too young to learn entrepreneurial skills that can be applied to everything from academia and non-profits to government and politics. They also need events: meet-ups, conferences, hack-a-thons and pitch competitions where entrepreneurs can gather, meet, collaborate, grow and support each other. Incubators, accelerators and shared space are all great amenities as well. And so is a killer downtown, which is what we have in Delray. When cities have walkable downtowns it allows for interaction in coffee houses, restaurants and the like. These collisions between people often spark connections, ideas and businesses. What we are missing is a ready source of capital-seed money and venture capital. There is plenty of wealth in these parts—but we need more “locavesting” or our most promising minds will be forced to go where the money is; i.e. Austin, Boulder, New York, Boston and of course Silicon Valley. Last month, Atlantic High’s robotics team took first in an international competition. We ought to do our best to make sure that these great young minds come back home to create jobs, wealth and wonderful, life changing innovations.
