March is here!

pring Training is under way, spring is on the way and here we are with another great edition of Atlantic Ave Magazine. This month, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (and urge you to support a children’s cancer charity), visit with my all-time favorite Frances Bourque and offer up our usual array of advice on life, fitness, health, diet and beauty. We also strongly urge you to attend Wellfest at the Delray Center for the Performing Arts March 8-9 and to prepare for the event by reading our feature on Delray’s hottest new event. We also urge you to vote in local elections March 11. Local government plays an important role in our lives and it is important to pay attention to the candidates, the issues and the qualifications of those who seek to lead Delray Beach. Among the issues facing Delray: growth and development, job creation, neighborhood quality, schools, crime, pensions and whether or not we should outsource fire-rescue to the county. Serving on the commission is a job to do, not to have. In other words, it’s hard work and not just about cutting ribbons and riding in parades.

So what traits are important? Here’s my list: • Integrity—the foundation of everything • Passion for the community • An understanding of local issues • A concern for people • Ability to communicate • Courage to do the right thing, not necessarily the most popular • Independence (please no puppets) • Vision • An ability to bring people together • Resilience (it gets hot in the kitchen)

There are other traits, but you get the idea. Now, enough politics. Enjoy Atlantic Ave Magazine and thanks again for your support and comments. We love to hear from our loyal readers. Jeff Perlman, Editor

Also a packaged craft kit, based on this project, will be available for groups of five or ten for a donation that amounts to less than $5 for each participant. The Main Events start at 11 am with twenty dazzling performances of dance, music, and social theatre by beautifully costumed African-American, European, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latino and a variety of other artists. They take to the stage in 15 minute intervals treating the attendees to a vast array of cultural experiences. Great prizes donated by local artists and businesses will be raffled off.

manity of South Palm Beach County to help fund a series of Financial Fitness workshops for homeowners in 2014. Since its inception in 1991, Habitat for Humanity has required all families to participate in financial literacy classes as they work toward homeownership. “Attending the Financial Fitness Workshop taught me how to budget,” said homeowner Erica Health, who attended the workshops last year and moved into her Habitat home in November. “Now that I am a homeowner, I know how to prioritize my bills and have cut down on unnecessary shopping. My children and I complete the monthly budget as a family, and they are learning what things are important to pay for versus what they ‘want’ to spend money on.” In 2014, Habitat will be partnering with St. John Missionary Baptist Church and Pathways to Prosperity located in Boynton Beach. Along with Habitat homeowners, all community members who are interested in improving their practical money skills are invited to attend this eight month series free of charge. “We are very grateful to State Farm for funding this financial education series. By educating families about financial literacy, we help them prepare for homeownership,” said Michael Campbell, Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County’s Executive Director.

LEEWORKS presents QUEST

This art exhibit is a story of triumph over hardship, featuring pieces by artist Lee Hutton, Monday, March 17 - March 24, 2014, 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The exhibit is hosted by ETTRA GALLERY 149 NE 2nd Avenue in the Pineapple Grove Arts District of Delray Beach. Visit www. leeworks-art-florida.com for more information. Lee Hutton’s pieces have won acclaim due to his skill and uncanny ability to impart movement and emotion to the static nature of the geometric. Some of his works are ordered and precise, shapes and colors slotting neatly together to form a single abstract. Others are less neat, more challenging images, daring the viewer to find order in the melting

of the lines and colors. The goal for LEEWORKS is to raise funds through the sale of art with a portion of the proceeds going to organizations that support community interaction and growth.

More than 100 people attended this special reception that was held in the Khoury Family Dance Rehearsal Hall on January 25. The awards were presented by Kids’ Dreams, Inc. in honor of the late Alan Lebow because “he was very passionate and knowledgeable about Shakespeare,” according to his widow, attorney Patricia Lebow. “He had studied so hard that he was able to recite many soliloquies and countless portions of Shakespearean plays and the works of other great writers such as Kipling and Keats,” she said. “I can tell the students in this audience from experience that no matter what career path you may choose in life, the ability to recite poetry and speak clearly will always serve you well.” From a competition with 45 applicants, the 11 winners of the 2014 Alan Lebow Award for Excellence in Shakespearean Performance were:

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in March for $50 or less.

I

’m green with excitement! The 46th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival is once again filling the streets with cheer, music, food, and everything Irish, and I couldn’t be more tickled. St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 this year but since Mondays are the pits, Festival Management Group is starting the fun on Friday. Held March 14 and 15, the two-day Festival kicks off on Friday with a Siamsa (Irish variety show) and Party, featuring Irish step dancing, traditional pipe and drum bands, Irish storytelling, tales of Celtic Mythology, food, beer, live music, with a finale of Celtic tradition with the Circle of Lights. This is a fun way to educate yourself about the Irish culture so you’re ready for the big day tomorrow. The Delray Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday honors the service of the International Firefighters and rejoices in Irish heritage. The Parade draws marching pipe and drum bands from around the world and Atlantic Avenue couldn’t be more alive with the sounds of music, the sights of happiness and the crowd in green. Our Parade is one of the largest in the nation so make sure you attend in your Irish-merry way and help pay tribute to Firefighters across the globe. The Festival is held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, located at 51 N. Swinton Ave., from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Please call (561) 2790907 or visit www.festivalmanagementgroup.com for more information.

oom, zoom, zoom! March is National Athletic Training Month and if you haven’t considering jumping on two wheels and gliding through the streets as training, get to it. Inspiration is right around the corner with the Third Annual Twilight Bike Festival, which features the fastest professional male and female cyclists in the nation. Held March 22 and 23, come down and watch the races as hundreds of cyclists sprint through the streets at speeds in excess of 35 mph. But the excitement doesn’t

stop there as the Festival features two days of competitive cycling, recreational rides, family events, races for kids, Beer Gardens and BMX Stunt Shows. The fun starts on Saturday at 8 a.m. and doesn’t stop until mid-day on Sunday, with the Men’s Twilight Pro Race Event, Granfondo Garneau Florida Ride, Professional Women’s Race, and tons more events tucked in between. Not to mention, the Vendor Village Health Expo promises to give you helpful hints on maintaining a healthy and fitness-filled lifestyle. Cycling, fitness and beer? I’ll break out the Huffy for that. The Festival is free to attend and keep your eyes peeled because you’ll find racers everywhere lighting up the streets of our vibrant downtown. The start/finish line is marked right on Atlantic Avenue, and registration is held on the grounds of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Please call (561) 289-9052 or visit www.delraybeachtwilight.com for more information.

T

his is taking a craft to a whole new height! March is National Craft Month and instead of thinking about glue, glitter and your 2 year old, open your imagination to Chinese acrobatics. Cirque Ziva with Golden Dragon Acrobats electrify the Crest Theatre stage as they perform pretty much everything I’m never going to be able to do with my body. Held March 28 through 30, the dancers will perform traditional and modern Chinese acrobatics with the beauty, technology and choreography of Cirque in this brand new show. The 25 performers,

who are all masters of acrobatics, dance, aerial stunts and contortion, create an exciting performance with ancient and contemporary music and colorful, traditional costumes. ver the years, I’ve had many jobs, from serving as a flight attendant, transporting federal prisoners, to being in personnel and corporate sales. Working at Caffé Luna Rosa, however, is by far my most favorite job. It’s the people who make it so special, not just the ones I work with but also the customers. I really love the people I meet - and their kids and the dogs they bring with them. In my nine years here, I’ve met a lot of great people and many have become friends. Some customers who were kids when I started are now grown and have kids of their own. Here, we think of you as a friend, whether you come in seven days a week or stop by for the first time. What makes Caffé Luna Rosa special, aside from the great food and unique location so close to the beach is the dynamics of the restaurant. This is a restaurant that’s built on customer satisfaction and all of us work as a team to do our best for the customers. Here we don’t compete with one another – we work as one unit, helping each other whenever we can. That might be one reason why we get so many regulars who come back. We’re on a first name basis with about 30 to 40 percent of our customers. That’s one more thing that makes Caffé Luna Rosa an awesome place. wenty two years ago, I moved to Florida after completing two residencies, one in Plastic Surgery and the other in ENT Surgery. I chose to open my practice here because I enjoy warm weather activities. It was important to me to be in a place where I could do what I love, both recreationally and professionally. My oldest passion is golf, which I have played my entire life. Over the past few years, I have taken up road cycling. I cycle in charity events, such as BikeMS and the Dolphin Challenge, and sponsor the Delray Beach Twilight Bicycle Festival. Professionally, I wanted to build a multi-dimensional practice where I would see a variety of clinical problems to keep me sharp and focused and fully utilize my skill set. Quality education, exemplary training and a phenomenal staff have helped me build that practice. I perform the whole gamut of cosmetic surgeries, including facelifts, rhinoplasty, liposuction and cosmetic breast surgery. My patients feel comfortable in my care, and will tell you that my office is warm and inviting, with an aesthetic like a beautiful old world library rather than a sterile clinic. Jonathan R. fter practicing for over 22 years in Delray Beach, we are very excited on having relocated our office to the Pineapple Grove District of Delray. I just want to take this opportunity to thank all of my loyal patients who have followed me here and best wishes to the community. It’s been my privilege to help all of you on your road to wellness for a host of issues whether it be through Chiropractic, Acupuncture for smoking cessation, weight loss and facial rejuvenation; as well as Cold Laser Therapy for Carpal Tunnel and Hypnosis for improving your self confidence and reducing stress. Prior to my move to Florida I was a professional actor in New York and have been a member of Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity. This opened doors for me to provide Chiropractic care for those in the industry and most recently I was fortunate enough to be featured opposite Mark Wahlberg in the film “Pain and Gain.” But the most important role for me these days is to provide care for my patients like Marcus Welby. I am now located in the Paradise Building at 140 NE 2nd Ave, Suite #30 in the Pineapple Grove District, Downtown Delray Beach Fl, Call me Direct, 561-272-6047, or the receptionist at 561-330-3434 for an appointment or just to say hello.

I’m shedding worse than a German Shepherd in spring [1].” I’ve learned how important it is to listen to all of what my patients’ have to say; and this is especially true when doing consultations about hair loss. After a good five minutes of venting, I was able to start asking some questions. “Anything else?” “Besides my pony tail not being as thick as it used to be? I’m so worried I won’t have any hair left that my stomach is tied up in knots. I wear St. Agnes of Rome around my neck hoping my prayers will be heard soon [2]. Until then, I have to take Pepcid with my coffee.” “Other than prayer, have you tried anything else?” “I’ve seen every type of doctor you can imagine. My primary scolded me for doing the hCG diet and made me start eating again [3]. My GYN said I’m not yet in menopause so she referred me to an Endo. My thyroid tests were ‘in range’ so he sent me to the dermatologist. I’m not a candidate for steroid injections so I then went to the hair transplant surgeon for a consult. I left him with Viviscal vitamins and shampoo, prescriptions for spironolactone, Propecia, and Rogaine, but still, no hair.” “Hmmm …” As Marisa was speaking, I was simultaneously reviewing her old records. “I don’t see where they every checked you for estrogen dominance, thyroid antibodies, insulin resistance, or adrenal fatigue [4].” Dr. Woliner, that’s why I’m here. You’re known all over the Internet as someone that looks at everything.” “My practice is named ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a holistic approach. After our 80-minute consultation today, I’ll check for things that weren’t looked at yet to find the cause(s) of your hair loss. Then, we’ll put together a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet, exercise, vitamins, OTC meds, and even prescriptions, as necessary.” Marisa came back ten days later to go over her labs. “I have bad news and good news. It’s not just one thing; you have twelve different findings that are abnormal. I break them down into ‘things you’re missing that you need to get’, ‘things you got that you need to get rid of’, and ‘hormone balancing’ [5].” “What’s the good news?” “They’re all treatable! Instead of using the same cookie-cutter approach to everybody, I can tailor my therapies directly to the specific problems you have.” “Like what?” “For starters, you might not be anemic, but you’re really low in iron [6].” “I can’t take iron pills. I’m nauseated already.” “That’s okay; we can give iron to you by injection here in the office. Quite a few of my patients periodically tank up their body’s iron stores that way.” “What else did you find? “When I see a slightly low WBC (white cell) count; that’s a sign of excessive stress [7]. Your coffee isn’t the culprit, but it’s your half-fast way of self-medicating this problem. Herbs and other supplements that support your adrenals are a better answer.” “And you said something about hormones?” “Thyroid hormones (not just T4 but also T3), are necessary to keep your hair in anagen, or the ‘growing phase’, as well as to keep its coloring [8]. Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey. Your TSH might be normal, but you tested positive for Reverse T3 and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, both of which cause thyroid hormone resistance [9].” Over the next 40 minutes, I went over the rest of Marisa’s labs and the game plan to regrow her hair and rejuvenate her body. “You’ll first notice less shedding, but since hair grows only at a rate of one-half inch per month, it might take a year and a half to regain the length you used to have [10].” Six months later, Marisa gave me an update. “Dr. Woliner, my hairdresser thinks St. Agnes answered my prayers, but between you and me, I think you had something to do with it too.” 38 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

March 7 Hey Baby Boomers, remember “Mr. Peabody and Sherman?” They were a regular feature of the wonderful, whimsical “Rocky & Bullwinkle Show,” an animated television series that ran from 1959 to 1964 and in re-runs ever afterward. Emmy Award-winner Ty Burrell voices Mr. Peabody, the world’s smartest person who happens to be a dog. Mr. Peabody’s “pet,” a boy named Sherman, is voiced by Max Charles. Stand by to fire up the WABAC (pronounced “wayback”) machine and travel back in time. Director Noam Murro insists “300: Rise of an Empire” is not a prequel to the 2007 hit film “300.” The bad news is that star Gerard Butler turned down the offer to reprise his character of Leonidos. Instead we have Sullivan Stapleton as Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) the naval commander versus Eva Green’s Atremesia as the Persians and Greeks duke it out by sea.

Shailene Woodley

March 14 Each generation needs its own “Cannonball Express.” This year it is the aptly-named “Need for Speed.” We’ve been getting teasers for the crosscountry crash-and-burn extravaganza for the past six months. Certainly action overshadows story and character development in the simple tale of a poor garage owner (Aaron Paul) who is done wrong by an ex-NASCAR driver (Dominic Cooper), and serves two years in prison before seeking revenge with his hot babe girlfriend (Imogen Poots). Writer-director-producer Tyler Perry gets serious and multi-racial with his drama “Single Moms Club,” which stars Nia Long, Amy Smart, Wendi McClendon-Covey, Terry Crews, Eddie Cibrion and yes, Tyler Perry himself. Likeable actor Jason Bateman makes his movie directorial debut and stars as unlikable sore loser Guy Trilby in “Bad Words.” Guy lost a national spelling bee competition as a child, and he never forgot it. When Guy finds a loophole in the rules, he tries to compete as an adult. Co-stars include Allison Janney, Judith Hoag, Beth Grant, Ben Falcone, Philip Baker Hall and Kathryn Hahn.

March 21 Neil Burger (“The Illusionist”) directs “Divergent.” The story is set in a future where people are put in groups according to personality. Shailene Woodley is Tris Prior, a “divergent” type who will never fit in any single group. Wouldn’t you know that Divergents become targets for elimination. The cast includes Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Eigort, Jai Courtney and Kate Winslet. Who doesn’t love The Muppets? Director James Bobin also wrote “Muppets Most Wanted,” which is a sequel to the first Muppet movie he directed in

2011. This time the gang is on a global tour to Berlin, Madrid and London. Kermit the Frog’s situation becomes complicated when he learns he is a dead ringer for the No. 1 criminal in the world. Ricky Gervais plays the evil Kermit’s sidekick, Dominic, aka No. 2. Tina Fey is Nadya, a feisty prison guard and Ty Barrell is Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon. Writer-director Lars Von Trier is back with what sounds like another downer: “Nymphomaniac.” Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as a self-diagnosed sex addict who is rescued from a savage beating by an old bachelor named Seligman (Stellan Skargard). Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell and Connie Nielsen co-star. The film is in two parts, with Part 2 not released until April 18.

March 28 What’s so funny about “A Haunted House?” When it stars Marlon Wayans, plenty. “A Haunted House 2” is a sequel to the surprise 2013 hit, which also starred Wayans as Malcolm, a guy who exorcised demons from his girlfriend. Now he’s back with a new girlfriend and two kids. Jaime Pressly, Essence Atkins, Affion Crockett and Gabriel Iglesias co-star. “Noah” as dark, mysterious actionhero? That would appear to be the approach taken by writer-director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”), who cast burly New Zealander Russell Crowe as the Old Testament patriarch who built a huge ark to save his family and every creature on Earth from 40 days and 40 nights of apocalyptic rain and flood. The cast includes Emma Watson as Ila, Logan Lerman as Ham, Douglas Booth as Shem, Anthony Hopkins as Methuselah and Ray Winstone as the villainous Tubal Cain. Now that he is no longer Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger can resume playing action heroes, such as John “Breacher” Wharton, head of a DEA squad that gets the bright idea of robbing a drug cartel’s safe house in “Sabotage.” What could go wrong, huh? David Ayer co-wrote and directs a cast that includes Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello, Dawn Olivieri and Olivia Williams.

Facet Syndrome:

A Major Cause of Back and Neck Pain

{

BY DR. TRAVIS LAMPERSKI

Shockingly, 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from neck and low back pain sometime during their life, with facet syndrome accounting for a large percentage of these symptoms. A recent study on low back pain showed involvement of one or more facet joints in 79% of the patients.

Many individuals with facet syndrome will often notice low back stiffness that becomes worse when sitting for long periods of time or when they first wake up in the morning and begin to move. They also may have trouble turning their head side to side or at times need to turn their entire upper body because it is too painful. Even bending forwards and backwards or walking upright can be very difficult. Facet syndrome can present itself as well-localized, dull or burning pain in the neck and low back, but that is not always the case. Lumbar facet syndrome can radiate into the buttock region, pelvis or thighs rarely traveling below the knee, while cervical facet syndrome can produce pain in the shoulder, arms, mid back and can also cause severe headaches. Most often individuals will blame their stiffness and pain on such things as their mattress, pillow or stress. They may even think that it is “normal” to feel this way. Articular facets are bony projections on the superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portion on the backside of the vertebras of the spinal column. These areas interlock with each other making up the zygapophyseal joint or “z-joint” which promote spinal support and are the key components to insure proper spinal motion. Like any other joint within the body, these areas experience constant repetitive movements where they interlock and become susceptible to injury and 46 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

other degenerative conditions. Conditions such as Arthritis, Overuse Syndrome and Stereotypic Movement Disorders are some of the most common. Facet joints are incased in a synovial capsule which supplies proper nutrients to the joint and provides the “meniscoid” structure with lubrication needed to insure smooth gliding over one another, much like the meniscus in our knees. These joints are in constant motion throughout our life and can become worn and traumatized. As these joints become worn, they no longer provide the proper lubrication they need and can become inflamed and irritated, leading to Facet Joint Osteoarthritis in the future. Bony projections begin to form within the joint causing it to become hypertrophied (enlarged) and in-

flamed, limiting an individual’s range of motion and producing pain. The main focus when treating any facet syndrome is to restore proper motion and function to the joint along with decreasing pain and inflammation. Conservative treatment options should be the first choice for an individual suffering from this condition. Chiropractic spinal manipulation is one of the best ways to restore that lost mobility in the spinal column. Non-surgical spinal decompression and flexion-distraction can be a gentle and painless way to decompress the facet joints and aid in stretching tight musculature in the neck and low back. In addition, applying class IV cold laser therapy to the involved area will enhance the metabolism of local cells, increasing blood flow, reducing pain and swelling thus speeding up the healing time. “Re-training” or “firing” specific areas of the brain by way of neurophysiologic exercises can increase tone within the muscles of the spine to improve stability. Lastly, ergonomic changes, mobilization therapy, and properly prescribed stretch/strengthening exercises will help ensure any recurring episodes. Brushing Your Teeth Could Guard Against Heart Disease

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Good oral hygiene is associated with a lower degree of artherosclerosis, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke

FACTS According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease will claim an estimated 600,000 lives this year, making it America’s No. 1 killer. Did you know that heart disease and oral health are linked? Studies have shown that people with moderate or advanced gum (periodontal) disease are more likely to have heart disease than those with healthy gums. Oral health can also provide warning signs for other diseases or conditions, including heart disease. Because the mouth is a passageway to the body, people who have chronic gum disease are at the highest risk for heart attack, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Gum disease (called gingivitis 48 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ing heart disease, have oral symptoms. Dentists can help patients with a history of heart disease by examining them for any signs of oral pain, infection or inflammation. Gum disease affects 80 percent of American adults, according to the AGD, and warning signs include red, tender or swollen gums; gums that bleed while brushing or flossing; gums that appear to be pulling away from your teeth; chronic bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth; and teeth that are loose and separating from each other.

in its early stages and periodontal disease in the late stages) is caused by plaque buildup. Some researchers have suggested that gum disease may contribute to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can dislodge, enter the bloodstream, attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. It has also been proposed that inflammation caused by gum disease may also trigger clot formation. Clots decrease blood flow to the heart, thereby causing an elevation in blood pressure and increasing the risk of a heart attack.

WARNING SIGNS Research suggests that more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases, includ-

PREVENTION Regular dental checkups, professional cleanings and good oral hygiene habits can improve oral health, which contribute to good overall health. While regular dental exams and cleaning are necessary to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar, and deter early signs of gum disease, you can also play a major role in preventing gum disease. Brush for two to three minutes, twice daily, with fluoridated toothpaste, especially along the gumline. Floss daily to remove plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach, and use a mouth rinse to reduce plaque by up to 20 percent. Eat a healthy diet to provide essential nutrients to your body, and avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. Make sure to also communicate with your dentist about any health issues you might have so you can start treatment to get on the right oral health track. A Commitment to Breast Health: Part 2

{

By Kristin Heather

Last month, I shared my experience with and without breast implants. How a new commitment to my own breast health inspires me to throw a monthly Boobie Party at my spa, to encourage other women to learn more about physical breast health with a greater mission to reconnect to their femininity.

While diet, thermography screenings, breast massage, herbs and oils to support wellness are of crucial importance, knowing your beauty and power as woman is incredibly significant. It all ties together: protecting our health as women involves protecting our breasts. Breasts are highly intuitive, yet highly affected by environmental pollutants and dietary habits. Toxins store in fat and because breasts are mostly comprised of fatty tissue, they are prime targets for toxic build-up. Chemicals and pesticides find their way into our fat. Even scarier, there is a host of chemicals known as endocrine disruptors that actually mimic natural hormones. Breasts, which utilize highly sensitive estrogen and progesterone receptors to recognize when to grow or produce milk get duped by these “disruptors” and begin to treat industrial chemicals like natural hormones! It is a very dangerous game that leaves breasts, breast milk, even our babies toxic. These risky chemicals are wild in personal care products. I say wild because cosmetic products have little regulations in terms of their ingredients. According to the Environmental Working Group, 60% of products contain chemicals that can act like estrogen or disrupt hormones in the body (EWG 2005). Some are even hidden within the label “fragrance,” which is considered a trade secret by law meaning that companies do not have to disclose what they put in products to add scent. These secret “fragrances” are mostly made of toxic chemicals. Since toxins store in fat and our breasts are mostly fat, “fragrance” is only one mind-blowing example of why 50 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

our breasts are so vulnerable to harmful chemicals. Toxicity leads to inflammation and disease, which is why it is so important to properly detox on a regular basis. So how do you detox your breasts specifically? Linda Cloward, a lymphatic drainage specialist, reveals the effectiveness of breast massage. Lymphatic breast massage is a daily tool that not only keeps the toxin-fighting lymph system in optimal function, but also fosters a heightened awareness of personal breast health so that any changes can be detected immediately and looked into professionally. Breast tissue contains “a lacy network of lymphatic vessels,” writes Linda. Lymphatic fluid is able to move out of the breasts through the lymph nodes, which are “linked throughout the body and act as a major line of defense against the spread of disease in the body.” Any hindrance of the movement of lymph affects our health. One thing that hinders the movement and therefore our breast health: bras. “If you don’t need to wear a bra, don’t wear one,” says Linda. And, if you do wear one, “massage anywhere you see a red mark” once it’s removed. In fact, you should massage anywhere you see a mark on your body from anything, such as bracelets, rings, or the tight waist of pants. Lymph is close to the skin, moving just below it. For this reason, massage is incredibly efficient in enhancing the flow of lymph and giving your immune system its best defense against harmful toxic build-up, inflammation, and disease. Let lymphatic massage be your of-

ficial introduction to your breasts and one step closer to truly recognizing their connection to your health as a woman. Don’t Get Burned

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, MD

As the summer months roll past us, sunlight becomes more intense and shines for longer hours, so naturally we gravitate to pools and beaches for recreation and to cool down. Unfortunately, fun in the sun comes with a risk of developing skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon put together. Over 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually, 90 percent of which are caused by UV radiation from sunlight and tanning beds. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. And, if an individual can reach the age of 65, the chance of developing skin cancer is 50 percent! Luckily most are found early and can

be managed in a dermatologist’s office. But there is also a risk of developing one of the deadliest diagnoses: “malignant melanoma”. One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 62 minutes to be precise). And while the incidence of many other cancers is falling, the incidence of melanoma continues to rise at a rate faster than that of any of the seven most common cancers. Melanoma only accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, but it causes 52 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. One or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence can more than double a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. If serious sunburn is a part of your history, extra precautions are absolutely mandatory. The good news is that the survival rate for patients where melanoma is detected early and before the tumor has penetrated through the skin, is about 99 percent. The bad news is that the survival rate falls to only 15 percent for those with advanced disease. One problem with melanoma is that there are no symptoms with early melanoma, no pain, no itch, nothing but maybe just a spec of color change that only a trained eye is equipped to recognize. As a dermatologist with a strong awareness of skin consequences, I urge everyone not to burn in the sun. Be religious about applying sunscreen, wear protective clothing and enjoy the great outdoors responsibly. Don’t become part of the skin cancer epidemic; don’t become a statistic. The single most im-

portant preventive measure is to see your dermatologist to have a professional skin check. This is a lifesaver you can’t afford to live without. What Type Of Cardio is Best for Athletic Performance?

{

By Brandon Flanagan

There has been a lot of discussion recently about the results of low intensity cardio vs. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), so I decided to put it to the test.

My subject, Darrell Casoria is committed to improving her tennis game and her physical fitness. She participates in workouts using HIIT. Darrell is also a member of a ladies tennis doubles league, in which she competes every week against other Palm Beach County teams. She religiously tracks her effort levels on the court and in the gym using the MyZone Heart Rate Monitor. Her monitor records data such as: calories burned, average heart rate, duration of her workout, and time spent in certain target heart rate zones. Darrell volunteered data from both a HIIT class and one of her doubles match54 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

es. During the one hour HIIT class, Darrell burned 536 calories, spending 8 minutes in her 90-100% HR Max and 27 minutes in her 80-90% HR Max. The data from her 2 hour 34 minute tennis match is drastically different. Darrell burned 987 calories, but only reached the 90-100% zone for 3 minutes and the 80-90% zone for 25 minutes. The data shows that the tennis match was a much longer duration than the HIIT class but also a much lower intensity. Darrell burns a fair amount of calories during her match, but due to the lower intensity she never triggers her body’s response to an oxygen deficit. This response is called Ex-

cess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). The science behind High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) suggests that a 12-20 minute anaerobic workout within one hour will result in a boost in one’s metabolism for the next 24–36 hours. During that time, one’s body will metabolize nine times the amount of calories from fat. This increased “afterburn” is due to EPOC. For athletes like Darrell, the vigorous anaerobic workouts used in HIIT will also improve athletic performance more than steady-state cardio. HIIT has been proven to illicit greater improvements in maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and body composition than steady-state cardio, both of which are important factors in athletic performance. Tennis is indeed a fun and challenging workout, but Darrell’s data shows it is difficult to get the heart rate above 90% during a doubles match. Comparatively, the data from the high intensity workouts shows the potential for more significant improvements in her athletic performance. In conclusion, every tennis player can benefit greatly from an intense and efficient HIIT workout. Brandon Flanagan holds a Bachelors Degree in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University. All banged up!!

{

By mark hasche

This month we take a good hard look at one of hairstyles’ most controversial techniques…ladies and gentlemen, I give you – insert drum roll here - “The Fringe” (also known as bangs).

The Fringe has been around since haircutting was made possible. Cleopatra showcased a full blunt fringed wig and was the pinnacle of style back in ancient Egypt. Later, Victorians would wear a fringe paired with more subdued styles. By now, all this talk about bangs has probably ignited a nervous twitch. Just remembering your kitchen beautician of a mom lopping off the front of your hair might be a scary and in some cases a traumatic experience. You lived through it and it just might be time for a time warp! What I’m actually trying to get at is that although bangs didn’t work for you as a child, they might just be the answer in keeping you looking fresh and young. Yes, I used the “Y” word, let’s face it people, most everyone is on the same page as far as aging goes. There’s a few people I know that express a disinterest in 56 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

hopping aboard the forever young train. So to these few proud agers I say “get banged.” Get your minds out of the gutter I’m purely talking about that fringe of hair that so graciously covers the tell tale signs of what decade you were born. Decade, as in you can look as much as ten years younger with just a few quick snips of the shear. Why opt for the scalpel or syringe when a fringe is all you may need to keep that plastic surgeon at bay? Now that I’ve covered what I feel is the most sought after effect of getting banged (couldn’t help myself), lets touch on the rest of them. Bangs are a great way, and in some cases - the only way, to balance out a face shape. Whether it’s a high forehead (also known as a five head) or a less than symmetrical face shape, the proper fringe can bring it all together. A square face can be softened with

a side fringe to draw the eye away from a prominent jaw line. The oblong face shape can also be made more appealing with the proper fringe. The proper fringe can go from polished and slick to side-swept sexy. A dark fringe cut just below the base of the brows above light colored eyes is a gorgeous pairing. A fringe on curly hair is very sexy and gaining popularity. Keratin treatments and thermal re-texturizing services as well as anti-frizz treatments have made wearing a fringe much less stressful. These services when administered properly can keep your fringe from failing by keeping your fringe smooth and controlled even on the most humid of days. I’ve referred to the proper fringe more than a few times. The proper fringe is a fringe that you and your stylist (not your mom, bff or coworker) decide will work best for you. If you just can’t commit to the idea of a fringe, you’re still in luck, there are numerous companies supplying clip in bangs for sale. I would suggest you invest in human hair clip in bangs – there is nothing worse than a face full of Barbie hair. This Delray Divo is out!! Misconceptions about Conception

{

By Susan Schiff, DOM, ABORM

As a fertility specialist I spend a great deal of time educating patients about what the real deal is around their fertility. Between Dr. Google, mothers, mother-in-laws, friends of friends who have a cousin, and chat rooms there is a lot of misinformation about fertility and conception.

I want to focus on the recurrent top five nonfacts that I address in practice on a daily basis. #1 “It’s me, not him.” Until a couple is fully worked up by a reproductive endocrinologist, rest assured you are not dealing with all the facts. 40% of all fertility issues today are female, 40% are male and the remaining 20% is a combination of male and female subfertility. Male factor is on the rise. It’s not just about volume…which has been decreasing over the years, it’s about motility (how they swim), morphology (the shape) and SDD decondensation. It would stand to reason that semen quality decreases with age just like a woman’s egg quality. So, unless both participants in the baby making process are tested by a specialist don’t assume it’s her and not him. #2 “My eggs are going to die on my 35th birthday.” Tick–tock, tick-biological clock. Yes, it is true that prime fertility is not mid-thirties. But the truth of the matter is, that our egg quality starts to decline years before women turn 35. Prime fertility is late teens through early twenties. Hence the runaway hit show Teen Mom. (Not funny) As a culture we are misled by the media by famous people in their forties getting pregnant. It’s not widely known that many of these celebs have done cycle after cycle of IVF (In-Vitro fertilization) or donor egg IVF cycles with younger women’s purchased eggs. The reality is that if you are planning on having a family, age is a factor. The majority of my practice has always been 35 to 45 year olds. So of course it IS very possible to reproduce at this time in your life, but knowing the facts is al58 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ways a good strategy. Rest assured there is not a default button that internally blows up women’s eggs on her thirty-fifth birthday. #3 “As soon as I stop birth control I will be able to conceive.” Not true. The majority of women on birth control today have used birth control for a large portion of their ovulating life and not necessarily for birth control purposes. Teenagers are put on birth control to regulate cycles, arrest cycling all together, moderate heavy cycles and manage lifestyles. Unfortunately, long-term endocrine disruption does not come without a price. Many women have issues re-igniting the regulation of their monthly cycles after the birth control pill. In addition, underlying menstruation issues have not been corrected through the pill, they have simply been masked. Consequently, when coming off of the pill, these issues come back and sometimes worse. #4 “Infertility means I can’t have my own baby.” Infertility is a misleading term. It is often interpreted as the inability to have a baby. This is not the case. The term is used when a couple has been trying to conceive for 12 months without conception. This does not mean in most cases that you cannot conceive with some guidance, lifestyle changes, education, acupuncture and possible assisted reproductive therapy intervention. Most of our patients have some degree of misinformation combined with subfertility issues. Infertility is a word that carries a heavy implication for any prospective parent. Fertility is often a reflection of your overall health. Reproductive

organs don’t work independently of the rest of the body. I would suggest not committing to the diagnosis of infertility and working with a physician that are able to enhance and support your sub-fertility condition. #5 “Lifestyle habits don’t affect fertility.” Really NOT true. The most common insults on fertility today are any one of the following, (whether it is one factor or a combination of many); eating habits, body mass index (being overweight), alcohol consumption, smoking cigarettes, smoking marijuana, prescription drugs, environmental toxins (yes, the hair colorist who was married to the golf course superintendent really had issues even though they were in their mid-twenties), insulin resistance, night shift workers, people that have jobs that require a lot of travel, highly stressful lifestyles, and low body fat to name a few. The idea is simple. The body prioritizes how it will use its resources. If the body senses undo stress, whether it be from processing too many toxic substances to struggling to regulate blood sugar, it will self-protect and not want to get pregnant. In an effort to protect the body the default will always be survival not pregnancy. Dr. Schiff treats a broad range of medical issues, although her expertise in fertility and women’s health. Michael Dubin’s dream came true when he landed a job as a TV Sportscaster. He covered the tennis games at Wimbledon, worked on the set of Saturday Night Live, The Nightly News and The Conan O’Brien show.

60 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Dubin at his Realty Elite Offices in Delray with Linda Albright head of new business development and a sales associate

Despite the exhilaration of team sports and its celebrity-hood Dubin had a nagging quest for the business world. And after 10 years in the spotlight he entered a bigger arena that was much closer to the ground, real estate. For the past 15 years it is real estate sales, management and investing that has made his life exciting and challenging, not the latest football scores. It is real estate that Dubin covets and real estate that he teaches others as the owner of the Delray office of Realty Elite. They also have offices in Wellington, Jupiter, West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. Dubin not only helps investors score real estate deals with average returns that would make a bank CD investor swoon with envy, but he has taught others the trade. “I

taught thousands of people how to invest in real estate for a nationally recognized company. I traveled all over the country giving real estate seminars and teaching the ins and outs of real estate investing.” Dubin may not traverse the country anymore teaching real estate investing, but he hasn’t lost his touch. “I invested in property with Michael and he has been a great partner and mentor. He sold me rental properties and manages them for me as well. Michael is excellent at what he does and knows the real estate business. He is also a master at finding good deals for investment property,” said sales executive Jeff Allen. Dubin is so good at his trade that he is looking for real estate agents to join the company and benefit from his expertise and high sales commissions. “I have state-ofthe-art marketing techniques and beautiful marketing material with professional photography. How you market a house determines how you sell a house. We provide our agents with the tools they need to succeed. It is our hands-on training that allows them to reap the financial rewards this business has to offer.” Currently the Realty Elite Delray office has 10 agents but Dubin is looking to grow his staff. He is also looking for real estate investors who want to make good returns on their investment. His turnkey real estate solutions have benefited many of his clients and most are not afraid to shout it from the rafters.“I bought a home for myself in Delray from Michael and also some investment property. He pays attention to detail, goes

beyond the obvious and has great knowledge of the market. Michael has passion for what he does, takes time with clients and gets the deal done,” said Donal Dennehy, a snowbird from New York. According to Dubin some of his clients live out of town and are not involved in the property once the deal is done. “I have clients who have never stepped foot in the property that they purchased from me. Yet when it comes down to it they enjoy healthy returns on their investments – some as much as 12 to 15 percent. I love the handson process of real estate and can visualize what a property can become.” Dubin specializes in the Delray Beach – Boca Raton area and handles investment

Dubin at his newly renovated duplex a great return on investment

property ranging from under $100,000 to $10 million. He also helps clients buy homes for themselves in country club communities, waterfront areas or condos. To make his services even more valuable Dubin has specialized techniques for finding off-market deals that benefit his clients. One thing that Dubin is adamant about is that investors don’t have to carry the burden of rental property. The reason is simply that he is real estate ready at the drop of a hat. “My investors don’t have to get their hands dirty; I take that burden off them. All they have to do is cash the checks. It can be a single family home, multi-family home or apartment building. I do all the work for them.” Eddie Dovner can attest to that. “Michael is honest as the day is long. You tell him what you want and he will find it for you. I have partnered with him on deals, and bought investment property from him, and they are all good investments. Everything Michael told me came true. He is tenacious, hardworking and has knowledge of the market.” If you ask Dubin he will tell you now is a great time to invest in real estate. It’s good for cash flow purposes and a good alternative to the stock market. “I sold someone a duplex and we put $20,000 into it and then rented each side for $850 a month. The returns for this investor are excellent.” Michael Dubin Realtor/Business Development/Investments Realty Elite The Palm Beaches Boca●Delray Delray Beach Office - 55 S.E. 2nd Ave. Delray Beach, Florida 33444 Cell: 561.431.0373 mdubin@realtyelitefla.com www.RealtyEliteFLA.com WWW.DUBINGROUP.NET

DELIVERY DUDES Doing Good Is Being Good by Diane feen

The path of the Dude is the road less traveled. It’s a place where thoughtfulness is gratefulness and hard work is rewarded. But just what is work as defined by a Dude?

62 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Jayson & Michael in Delray Office

“Our focus is on doing good and bringing something great to our customers. When you are doing that, it gives you a nice feeling,” said Michael Silverman, better known as Papa Dude. If you don’t know The Delivery Dudes then you haven’t met the most industrious young people to come down the un-corporate business path. They don’t wear suits (quite to the contrary their uniform is often flip flops and shorts) but they wear a great attitude and a caring nature. Their raison d’ être is to deliver food to your door from high brow restaurants or local food establishments. But unlike a traditional delivery service the Dudes are power packed with good intentions. “One of our regular customers called and asked us to deliver food to their daughter who was not feeling well. We picked up

the soup she wanted and added a get well card. We call this personalized service with a heart,” said founder and master Dude Jayson Koss. The Delivery Dudes have a lot of these stories. The reason is simply that they don’t do business as usual (like corporate America). They write their own rules (in a good way) and tend to follow the Dude Bible that dictates empathy, caring about others and helpfulness. That is the reason a dude recently changed a smoke alarm battery for a DD customer. “We care about our customers. When one of our dudes went to a house recently to deliver food and he heard the smoke alarm ringing so he changed the battery. We do not do customer service by the book. We encourage our dudes to take a problem and turn it into something positive,” said Silverman. One of the most positive of Delivery Dude challenges is to pick up food from an array of restaurants in Delray (or one of their 11 locations) and bring it to a person’s home. To help the dudes keep their promise of delivering hot food hot and cold food cold they have hefty heavy duty insulated bags.

Austin in The Dude Training shirt

Add that to their self-motivating un-corporate culture and you have a hit every time. “I Love Delivery Dudes! It is a new mom’s dream come true. We can enjoy our favorite restaurants without hiring a sitter to stay with our sleeping baby. The owner really makes sure everything is right and fast. I’m a huge fan,” said Laura of Delray. There are a lot of Delivery Dude fans. Their popularity has spread throughout South Florida - from Palm Beach to South Beach – and they recently added Franklin, Tennessee making the total Delivery Dude

The “Dudes” Hanging out the Delray office window on Atlantic Ave

locations 15. They also have Delivery Dudes in Portland, Oregon and Pensacola. Though their numbers have multiplied, and there are over 100 Delivery Dudes, their cause and cure has not changed. “If you don’t want to cook you have options. There are 50 restaurants to chose from and you can sit at your computer and order a meal from the Delivery Dudes and 45 minutes later a really nice guy will come to your door and say, ‘Thank You so much for ordering from the Dudes.’” said Silverman, who sits in their newly expanded offices in downtown Delray Beach. Not only will the Dudes deliver your meals with a smile but the choice of food and formation are as varied as the appetites they cater to. They deliver fresh local eggs, free range chickens, milk from heirloom cows and dairy products from Heritage Hen

Farm in Boynton Beach and just about anything else on your culinary wish list. There’s also a Dude Pantry that stocks drinks, chips, candy and soda. “We exist to brighten people’s day. We bring fresh local produce and support local businesses as much as possible. Despite all our expansion we still have a favorite saying, ‘Bringing the Good to Your Door.’” Bringing the good is their essence and core value. It’s also what sets their culture apart from traditional corporate ideology. “We are trying to adjust to the ‘whys’ of our company. Usually the goal is to make money and be profitable, but our purpose is to continue to do good for everyone. When you help people then everything falls into place,” said Koss, whose hair would disqualify him from IBM in a heartbeat. Koss continues to explain the Dude philosophy this way: “I wanted to create something where no one gets screwed. Here at DD’s everyone is happy and winning. The restaurants benefit, the customers love the service and the employees get to create a career where they are not a slave to a cubicle. I am passionate about creating opportunities for other young people to be successful by doing their best.” If this sounds like something Gandhi might say, you’re right. But the reality is that it works. Their new Boca Raton partner, Ryan Torchin started signing up restaurants and delivering food to hungry residents and so far he is very successful. Part of this success is that it costs a mere $5 to have anything delivered to your door (within reason) and the other reason is printed on the back of their DD T-shirts. “I will say Please and Thank You. I will high five you upon request. I will make you smile. I will be respectful. I will be on time and not wear gaudy jewelry. I will be there for you when the rain starts to fall. And I will hold open doors.” That is probably the reason that doors just keep opening for the Delivery Dudes. It’s just the natural evolution of goodness. Since 2006 his company has been doing construction for private clients, businesses and non-profits in Palm Beach County. “My partners (Bill Neville and Chuck McGovern) and I have over 80 years combined experience in the construction industry and 34 years in the development and contracting industry in South Florida,” said Halberg. With the real estate industry taking off again Stuart & Shelby is buying land and building homes like in the good old days. Because of this they have teamed up with local Delray realtors Steve and Lori Martel of RE/MAX Advantage Plus. The Martel’s have 20 years experience in the real estate industry in the Northeast and four years ago they moved to Delray Beach. “This is the first time I have collaborated with outside 66 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Steve has a background in hotel management and together with Lori they have a case full of awards in the real estate industry. “I have worked for custom home builders, and my wife and I complement each other. I am the person who goes to the inspection, open houses and networking events and Lori does the paperwork and tends to the contract details. The lawyers love her because when we get to the closings there are no mistakes,” said Steve. Halberg is pretty happy about that. “Because the building business is taking off again we are building homes, which is why we needed a great team. The Martel’s are terrific down-to-earth people and we’re excited about this new team.” There is other news on the horizon for the Stuart & Shelby team. Pam Halberg wife of Chuck – has her real estate license and has joined the Martel’s at RE/MAX Advantage Plus. “After 30 years in accounting I never imagined a career change could be so welcoming and enjoyable. I already do Stuart & Shelby’s accounting so I feel like I was being groomed to do this. I am amazed

by the amount of referrals I have received from both our customers and neighbors. Working with Lori and Steve is a true partnership and everyday is an adventure” said Pam, who is often seen alongside Chuck in their community service and philanthropic endeavors. Not only did Stuart & Shelby just win the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award (for 2013-2014), but their clients can’t say enough good things about them. “We purchased a home last September from Stuart & Shelby long distance from Keller, Texas which is a bit scary. The negotiations were fair and equitable, the quality and value was great, and we feel like we got a good deal. That could have been the end of the story, but it is just the beginning. We had on-going conversations with Chuck, Patty and the Stuart & Shelby team to make sure everything is perfect when we move in. They have gone above and beyond all aspects of the deal and we feel very welcomed by our new friends at Stuart & Shelby. We highly recommend doing business with them,” said Mike O’Connell, Vice President On-Premise National Accounts for Russian Standard Vodka. There are others in the community who are bit by the Stuart & Shelby bug. “Our community is so fortunate to have someone as passionate and active in the community as Chuck. His heart is as big as Texas. So many of Delray’s nonprofit groups have benefited

from Chuck’s, and Stuart and Shelby’s generosity,” said Karen Granger, CEO of the Delray Chamber. One of those people is Pine Grove Elementary School Principal Joe Peccia. Halberg and his team helped build their Holiday Parade Float that won first prize. They are also helping to raise money to send the Safety Patrols from Pine Grove Elementary to Washington D. C. Steve, who is also a singer-songwriter, performs in local venues and works with the Stuart & Shelby team to raise money at special events. “Chuck has given us the support we needed so desperately from the business community. We have 31 kids going to Washington this year, and we have raised $31,000 toward the trip so far. This is an experience they will never forget – it is something I truly believe provide a rich foundation for their futures. Chuck is that guy I can pick up the phone and tell him what we need and within minutes I have support to accomplish the task. These blessings have such an impact on our kid’s lives and families,” said Peccia. That is just the way Halberg planned it. He continues to create avenues to do good things in his business so he can contribute to the fiber of the community. It’s what makes him happy and what endears him to those around him. Want to look better and feel better about yourself not only today but tomorrow and the day after that...? Now you can with help from the fitness experts at Slash Fitness, where working out is customized to fit every individual.

you will meet their trainers and take one of many Slash sessions they offer using the latest and greatest in performance training equipment! The trainers will challenge you to perform your best to ensure that you get better every day through their individualized semi-private training sessions. Their 1-on-1 training without the accompanied hourly expense will help you to attain your health and fitness goals. That was the mission when owners Joe Ardagna, Austin Brock, and Andy Sziraki decided to open the doors to the fitness center and spread their healthy message.

“We wanted to provide cutting edge personal training mixed with body building, a group class atmosphere, athletic training, flexibility with yoga, and cardiovascular all in a 45-minute package,” said the owners, “At Slash Fitness, we are making the body your machine; it is working the entire time. We offer a unique training package that no one else does. We are the future of fitness.” The owners started their dream for a fitness center from the ground up and with many true followers who also believed in them. “We started our dream with our own

money and own passion. The road was pretty tough and we were so broke when we started that we resorted to buying used barbells that we spray painted black to look new, had a portable iPod speaker as our music system, literally couldn’t even afford to glue the rubber flooring down, and we made most of our own equipment from Home Depot. But we never gave up,” said Andy Sziraki. “Slash Fitness came mainly from our passion and progress in our individual personal training businesses.” But how does it work? At Slash Fitness, you can sign up for individual personal training or 45- minute group personal training sessions with highly qualified health and fitness experts. The training sessions offer body building, weight training, sculpt physique, and resistance training. They use a turf floor and guide you through various fitness classes that use techniques to sculpt your physiques with battling ropes, speed ladders, resistance bands and much more. Besides the unique workout routines, the classes are also small and individualized. People of all ages, from teenagers to in their 70s, and of all fitness levels, from professional athletes to new gym goers, come in to get in shape and in the best health of their life. Slash Fitness only allows 20 people per class; you can easily sign up via an app on your cell phone, online or by calling the gym. And the best part is the staff treats each person like they are part of the Slash family! “We pride ourselves on safety, instruction, and ensure that we are providing ev-

eryone a one-of-a-kind fitness experience,” said the owners. “The majority are here for general fitness, to look younger, stay leaner and to live a healthier lifestyle!” The owners find pride in the transformations they have seen from each of their members from day one as they make progress in their fitness goals. The success stories are countless from members coming in who are taking multiple medications to them being able to throw out their prescriptions. Other stories are clients who lose the pounds but gain much in self confidence. “There are many success stories from our members. We have seen people lose body fat and their overall daily health has improved. We have seen more changes in people here at Slash Fitness than in any other fitness method,” said Joe Ardagna. “Our members have improved their daily life, and have lost a significant amount of weight while gaining muscle. Slash Fitness is more about turning your life into a healthy lifestyle and a healthy mantra,” added Austin Brock. Another unique feature is the friendly atmosphere offered at Slash Fitness. Staff are welcoming as soon as you step foot in the door and they show that they really care about your health and wellbeing. Plus, everyone in the classes are encouraging each other to meet their fitness goals. “We are a Slash Family. We strive to make this place different than any other gym. We help our members if they need it and offer individualized sessions. Plus, members interact with each other at the gym and outside of the gym. Here at Slash Fitness, you are not just a number on the computer screen but part of the family,” said Andy Sziraki. “We are in this to help people and inspire them to attain their peak physique and a better version of themselves, to make everyone happy and shredded. Most people come to us looking for a change in their bodies, their group of friends, a new motivator, or a new life! Once change happens, they change their life by changing their body. If you watch the flow of clients who step inside the hair studio of Joe Ardagna and Whitney Smith you’ll see miraculous transformations. Guests walk in looking nice but walk out looking beautiful.

Joe Ardagna and Whitney Smith 70 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

And it’s not just one or two; it seems that everyone who crosses their path is bitten by the beauty bug. That’s because Joe is a Board Certified Hair Colorist with 35 years of experience and has a passion for making ordinary hair extraordinary. “We treat our customers like royalty. I pick a hair color that compliments their skin, their age and their hair texture. Whether it’s with hair, make-up, color or extensions I personalize a complete look for them that fits their lifestyle and allows their beauty to shine.” You don’t have to convince Debbie Petrell of Joe’s natural talent. She has been going to Joe to cut and highlight her blond tresses for years, and is anything but nonchalant about it. “I wouldn’t go to anyone else. Joe makes me look young and does a single process that adds color and highlight to my hair. I come every four weeks,” said Petrell who walked out of Joe’s shop with a spring in her step. There is something special about the Joe-Whitney team. They complement each other in different yet similar ways. Each is passionate about transforming hair by way of color, cut, extensions and Keratin treatments. The results as Joe calls it, is the Wow Factor. Whitney doesn’t mention it, but her clients swear she has it. “Whitney is amazing. She has been coloring and cutting my hair for two years. She gave me a Keratin treatment and my hair is silky and smooth and I don’t need a blow dryer. My husband doesn’t understand why I drive so far to get my hair colored, but I would drive to Miami to see Whitney if I had to. For my wedding she did the most beautiful updo,” said Colene Frost of West Palm Beach. Both Joe and Whitney specialize in mak-

ing clients feel and look beautiful. Sometimes that means adding extensions to make hair thicker or longer in length. The process is a bit arduous but both Joe and Whitney are so focused on this beauty enhancing task that clients often relax while undergoing their transformation. The reason is simply that the results speak for themselves. “When I first started going to Joe I had short blond hair that was damaged. When I found Joe he totally transformed my hair. He added extensions to make it longer and suggested adding ombre highlights. All of my friends say my hair looks striking and no one can tell I’m wearing extensions. He’s the best,” said Audra Murray. Whitney is equally as revered as Joe in the beauty arena. That is why their rather small space seems larger because of the camaraderie and shared respect. Some say it’s like being with family; others call it a home away from home. Lauren Hall went to grade school with Whitney and now goes to see her every two weeks to have her hair colored. “My hair was chin length and I wanted to grow it long and Whitney said, ‘If you want healthy long hair give me a year.’ Now my hair goes down to the middle of my back and I get Keratin treatments to relax my hair

and make it smooth and silky. I wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair but Whitney,” said Hall, whose blond tresses looked camera ready when she left. Joe and Whitney share the belief that hair is delicate but pliable enough to withstand anything that Mother Nature blows its way. You can see it in their fierce determination and self assurance that hair can be trained and tamed to match the person’s inner beauty. There’s no drama, but a lot of skill and passion in action. Joe is adamant that Whitney has the DNA to be the best in her field and Whitney’s mega watt smile is proof positive that her calling is hair styling and coloring. “Joe is so caring, and when he touches you your life is changed. The way he does color is one step ahead of anyone else. He knows exactly what color will look good on each person,” said Whitney who was born and raised in Delray Beach. It can be said that time is of no importance when in the company of this dynamic duo. At 7pm on a weekday the pace of beautifi-

cation is still in full swing. Louise, who was born in England, met Whitney when she cut her husband’s hair. Now she comes every few weeks to have her chestnut brown roots touched up and refreshed by Whitney. “A lot of colorists dry out your hair, but not Whitney. She is a first class professional stylist. I am thrilled to have found her.” Happy clients like Louise are what both Whitney and Joe are good at cultivating. “We bend over backwards to please our clients. You have to love this business and wow clients, otherwise you won’t last,” adds Joe. It looks like the Wow Factor has permeated the premises because it’s been 35 years for Joe and seven for Whitney and their popularity continues to soar. Local Volunteers to Shave Their Heads to Support Childhood Cancer Research By lINDA BROWN

{

Childhood cancers make up less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed each year. About 10,450 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades.

72 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Because of major treatment advances in recent decades, more than 80% of children with cancer now survive 5 years or more. Overall, this is a huge increase since the mid-1970s, when the 5-year survival rate was about 60%. Still, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children (after accidents). About 1,350 children younger than 15 years old are expected to die from cancer in 2014.

That’s the motivation that drives the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteerdriven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. The Foundation will host one of its signature head-shaving events at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square on March 14, from 7-11 p.m.

At this moving event, more than 150 volunteers will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to “Conquer Childhood Cancers.” So why all the shaved heads? Because worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer re-

search funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease. This year’s head shaving event will be held in conjunction with the city’s 46th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival one of the biggest celebrations of the year in Delray Beach. The St. Baldrick’s event kicks off the weekend long festivities which also includes a two day Siamsa (Irish Variety Show) and Party, featuring Irish step dancing, traditional pipe and drum bands, Irish storytelling, tales of Celtic Mythology, food, beer, live music and ending with the Celtic tradition of the Circle of Lights. The Irish Siamsa is hosted by the Master Leprechaun himself, the original Jack Ryan, the Bard of Belmar, Shanachie of the Irish Riviera and the Jersey Shore’s Storyteller extraordinaire. Professor Ryan is an encyclopedia of all things Irish and sure to educate and entertain. The Irish Siamsa takes place in Downtown Delray Beach at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at the corner of Atlantic and Swinton Avenue. Festivities begin at 5:00 PM, Friday, March 14th and continue on through Saturday evening in conjunction with the Parade.

About St. Baldrick’s Foundation The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteerdriven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick’s coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $127 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, and the new International Scholar grants train researchers to work in developing countries. For more information about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation please call 1.888.899.BALD or visit www.StBaldricks.org. “The Book of Jonah” is published by Henry Holt and Company of New York. ent’s legal rights. Her areas of practice include: dissolution of marriage, alimony, child support, paternity, child custody, domestic violence and anything family related. “I often see people at their worst time, but I help them close that chapter and move forward,” said Sinatra. The local attorney especially enjoys serving the community of Delray Beach, and cities throughout Broward and Palm Beach County. “I love Delray Beach; It’s an upscale but down-to-earth City. Our current location is in the heart of downtown Delray Beach, which clients seem to like. We’re in a place with character, but also a place that is convenient,” she said. Taryn Sinatra received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Florida in 2001. Then being inspired to pursue a career in law, she enrolled at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center and received her law degree in 2005. After working as a Certified Legal Intern with the Broward County State Attorney’s Office during law school, she began her career as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County in 2005, where she prosecuted various crimes from misdemeanors to first-degree felonies. Sinatra provides personalized service with the owner, Taryn Sinatra, and her office assistant being very accessible to each of their client’s needs. The firm also offers competitive rates in this tough economy. “It is a small firm, which has many benefits for the client. Clients have access to me. I am very hands on with each of my clients and give them the attention they want. I want them to feel like they are being listened to and have access to their attorney throughout the entire process,” said Sinatra, adding, “We have patience for what they are going through; we listen and give each one of them the individualized attention that they need and want and should be getting.” By working with the Law Offices of Taryn G. Sinatra, P.A., you can rest assured that you will have an experienced and effective advocate in your corner to protect and defend your legal rights. Taryn Sinatra is dedicated to strong advocacy to protect her clients, while always maintaining the highest level of professionalism to uphold the integrity of her practice.

Taryn Sinatra understands that divorce and family law matters can have a great financial burden on an individual and family. She offers reasonable retainer requirements and competitive and fair rates, and will fight, where applicable, to obtain attorney’s fees on a client’s behalf. As every case is different, the cost of legal representation will vary from case-to-case depending on the legal issues to be addressed and on whether the case will be litigious or one that can be resolved by agreement. But no matter the case, Taryn Sinatra strives to work with her clients to help them through the financial burden. Taryn Sinatra’s clients and others are grateful for her dedication and efficiency. So much so that she has recently received top honors and accolades. Sinatra was featured in the Attorney at Law Magazine Broward and Palm Beach edition as one of only 14 attorneys to watch in 2014. She was also selected as a Rising Star in the Super Lawyers publication for 2014. She also remains very active in her community of Delray Beach. “I never want my clients to feel like they are in the dark during the process. I spend time with clients so they can feel a certain level of comfort in knowing what is happening at every stage of their case,” said Sinatra. “Although it’s seen as one of the toughest areas of the law, I enjoy what I do. In this practice, it is an art form to know when to take a softer approach and when to be more aggressive. At the end of the day, I am always fair and honest with my clients and will work my hardest to obtain the best outcome for them and their family. The Law Office of Taryn G. THE DELRAY BEACH CLUB By Diane feen

There’s a saying that you live longer when you share it with others. That’s easier said than done – especially if you’re single. But it doesn’t have to be.

One of the hidden gems of Delray Beach lies just within your grasp. It has recreational activities, a private beach that celebrities would covet, social events, intellectual programs, tennis, bridge and a fitness center. If all this sounds too good to be true, it’s not. The Delray Beach Club is one of the quieter unsung heroes of our town. The private member-owned beach club sits on 3.5 acres of pristine oceanfront property that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The clubhouse was recently renovated and the social calendar is in full swing. And one of its major advantages over some clubs is that they cater to families, children and single people of all ages. They even added an Open Table (for anyone who wants to join others) in the dining room. There are also unlimited activities to engage your mind, body and soul. If you’re a morning person you can start 78 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

out your day in sunny fashion at Coffee Talk by the Sea. Enjoy coffee and conversation under the poolside tent with a full view of the ocean. Of course there is a swimming pool nearby (and the ocean) if you find yourself yearning to make the most of your aerobic capacity. There are other activities throughout the day to challenge your cerebral landscape. There are Bridge games and lessons, Canasta, a Book Club, an Art Club, Theater Trips, Luncheons, Lectures, Musical entertainment and other activities. This month there is a Wick Theater & Costume Museum Tour, a fashion show and luncheon, and a book club discussion followed by dinner. Its activities like these that have created the perfect landscape for Floridians who may be retired but still want to enjoy exercising their intellectual and social sides. “There are so many social activities like cruises, theater events, music, hors-d-oeuvres, social events and dancing outside. We have been members for 13 years and moved to Florida from Ontario, Canada. Once you belong to the Delray Beach Club you make friends and a whole new lifestyle opens up to you,” said Bill Martin. The Martin’s are not the only members who find the social calendar at the Delray Beach Club a many splendored thing. Their Friday Night “Mix & Mingle” by the pool is highlighted by live entertainment and hors d’oeuvres, and is the perfect social solution for families, couples and singles. They also have dinner and dancing in the main dining room (with a panoramic view of the ocean), holiday celebrations with a front row seat for July 4th fireworks, Memorial Day festivities, Labor Day and New Years Eve. For children there are games and activities. The more casual dining area, known as the Grille Room, has all the comforts of old

Florida with design elements that make it country club chic. It’s definitely a place that Hemmingway would have held court. There’s Happy Hour in the Grille Room, live music, dinner and cocktails. The cozy dark wood, wicker and modern overhead fans make it the perfect place for family and social gatherings. Dining by the sea is wonderful and so is coffee talk, but if you listen to the talking heads of modern medicine they will tell you to get out of your chair and exercise. That’s why The Delray Beach Club has a fitness center to energize and exercise your most precious asset – your body. There are Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms, Fitness Equipment, Exercise Classes, Personal Training Sessions, Water Aerobics and assorted Massages, Body treatments and facials. For tennis lovers there are Har-Tru® Tennis Courts, special tennis events and a USPTA certified tennis pro. They also have tennis leagues, pro-ams and Sunday Tennis Socials followed by dinner by the sea. If you have children The Delray Beach Club has everything you need to keep them entertained and happy. There is a Kids Activity Center and a Kids Club that offers arts and crafts activities and swim lessons. There’s also a vibrant Kids Summer Camp. It’s this family friendly

environment that has local financial executive, Bryan DeFrances so enamored with The Delray Beach Club. “There is a great blend of activities for both adults and children. We feel safe and secure there – the kids can go out and play and we love it as well. We use the pool, eat in the Grille Room and love the Friday Night Mix and Mingle. The Delray Beach Club is a great way to bring the whole family together in a safe and secure environment. We are so grateful we joined.” There is another wonderful thing about belonging to a private club –you become a part of their extended family. “There are no strangers at our club, only friends who have not met. If you dine solo we have an “Open Table” so you can mix and mingle with other members, and we have activities for a diverse group of members. We try our hardest to make sure everyone is happy here,” said General Manager Shane Peachey. The Delray Beach Club is a veritable treasure that will fill your social calendar and your heart with joy. They invite you to come along for the ride. For membership information contact Diane Roberts at 561-278-6226. The Delray Beach Club is located at 2001 South Ocean Blvd. in Delray.

High-goal professional polo is no longer played in Boca Raton or in Gulf Stream, though the Gulf Stream Polo name survives in a new location in Wellington.

High-goal polo is alive and well and it is being played at a higher level than ever at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, 3667 120th Ave. South, Wellington. 20-goal tournament play for the 2014 season occurs at 3 p.m. every Sunday through April 20. In the month of February teams competed for the Ylivisaker Cup, named for former Yale Polo Team captain and Palm Beach Polo and Country Club founder Bill Ylivisaker. On March 2 the USPA C.V. Whitney Cup, named in memory of Cornelius Vanderbilt “Sonny” Whitney and his cousin John Hay Whitney, will be decided. Competition March 9-23 is for the 26-goal Piaget USPA Gold Cup, which has been hosted at the IPC since 2007. March 30-April April 20 is the grand finale: the Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship.

The U.S. Open Polo competition dates back to 1904. It has been played at the IPC since 2004. The very best polo players in the world compete at the International Polo Club. General admission is surprisingly low at just $10, to encourage public awareness of the very expensive sport. Polo is played on a field 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. It is the largest field of any organized sport. There are six seven-minute, 30-second chukkers in a game, with a brief halftime intermission. Spectators are invited at that time to walk the field and stomp down divots in the turf made by the horses’ hooves. This is for the safety of the horses and riders. There are four players on a team, with positions 1 and 2 attacking, No. 3 midfield and No. 4 playing defense. Handicaps in polo range from - 2 to 10 goals, which is the highest rating. There are more 10-goal players competing at IPC than anywhere in the world. The photos accompanying this story were shot by Mike Gora at the finals of the Joe Barry Memorial Cup January 26. Valiente emerged victorious over Tonkawa 13-8. For more information call 561-204-5687 or go to www.InternationalPoloClub.com.

ASPIRE SKINCARE & BEAUTY Dermatology with a Heart By Diane feen

As a young girl growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas Dianna Sellers used to read fashion magazines and try to imagine herself in that glamorous world. She was so enamored with top model Gia Carangi that she began experimenting with make-up to achieve the cover-girl look on herself and her friends.

82 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

This quest to achieve beauty and maintain beautiful skin has stayed with Sellers since then. She began her career at the first Prescriptives Cosmetic counter at Dillard’s in New Orleans – and hasn’t looked back since. But the scope of her career path has changed quite a bit from those innocent glances at Cosmopolitan Magazine. “My fascination with beauty has expanded and still runs deep. I have a passion for skin care, beauty technologies, make-up and all aspects of the beauty industry. Although she worked for some of the gi-

ants in the cosmetics field (Clinique, Elizabeth Arden and Sisley) Sellers had bigger dreams. In 1994 she joined the Thermolase Corporation, a pioneer in laser hair removal and laser facials. Sellers and the Thermolase team were instrumental in developing products for Medi Spas and Day Spas. In 1999 she began working with a new technology called Microdermabrasion and soon was training physicians and estheticians on this skincare regime. From there she worked with Cold Light LED Therapy and Radio frequency for skin tightening and body contouring. “My philosophy is all about looking great for your age and my goal is to help clients find the right answers for total skincare and facial rejuvenation,” said Sellers, founder of Aspire Skincare. It is at her intimate salon that Sellers uses these advanced techniques she has honed throughout the years. “As a Florida-based licensed paramedical aesthetician my greatest desire is to help clients feel and look beautiful in a safe non-invasive way. I research the industry daily to bring the latest beauty treatments from the celebrity world, including the latest make-up tips.” Sellers offers specialty treatments such as Microdermabrasion that exfoliates the skin and decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “My most popular treatments are a Vitamin C facial with vitamins and minerals and an Enzyme facial that uses pineapple and papaya to take off dead skin.” Blair Jones has seen the benefits of Sellers Microdermabrasion and radio Frequency treatments first hand. “Dianna gives me facials and other treatments and it really makes me feel great. The difference is very visible and I have a glow when I leave her. She also does my make-up and pinpoints the right color to compliment my skin. When I first started treatments with her people would come in and say I looked 10 years younger,” said the Delray caterer and owner of Artistic Artichoke Café. Sellers expertise is not only keeping skin looking youthful and beautiful, but she makes custom blended mineral make-up for clients as well. “I have an uncanny ability to select the right mineral powder blend to achieve the correct undertone for your skin. Once we have the right undertone I create a color palette for clients that can be used for foundation, eye shadow, blush, bronzers and lipstick. I can create a natural look for you or a dramatic one, whichever you want.” Sellers also prides herself on helping

smokers skin gain back the natural glow to their skin through microcirculation and oxygen treatments. She also specializes in helping client’s improve skin tone and texture of skin so they don’t have to wear make-up. But it is the radio frequency treatments that really helped client Dr. Mike. “It has been amazing how after only three treatments of Radio Frequency on my neck, my friends, family and patients have commented that I look refreshed and younger. Even my wife wondered what happened to my Turkey neck,” said the Delray Beach chiropractor. Radio Frequency Skin Tightening, according to Sellers, is a non-invasive way of tightening loose skin around the forehead, eyes, cheeks, chin and neck. “Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished, luminosity is returned to skin and the collagen levels increase. This relaxing treatment will make you feel and look younger all in a lunch hour!” Recently Sellers joined Viora as a clinical trainer and practice development consultant. “Viora is a market-leading manufacturer and technology provider of advanced radiofrequency, light-based systems and Diamond Tip microdermabrasion for the global aesthetic and medical markets. They offer a wide range of applications including body contouring, cellulite reduction, as well

as phototherapy (Intense Pulsed Light). It is also used for anti-aging treatments that enable medical aesthetic professionals to treat dermatological conditions such as wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation, acne, hair removal, vascular lesions, active acne, cellulite, hyper pigmentation, sun damages and more.” Sellers also offers a variety of facials ranging from Detox, Clarifying, Stress Recovery, Vitamin C to Enzyme facials. Personal Trainer Mitch of Boca Raton swears by them. “Since I have been going to Dianna for regular facials my skin has never looked better. The improvements in my skin were instant and her products are not only amazing but affordable. She is knowledgeable about her profession and is a she is a great person to be around.” There are lots of others who agree with Mitch. They can feel Sellers unequivocal passion and commitment to helping her client’s look and feel their best. “My favorite saying is ‘Find Your Beautiful’ and after 27 years in this industry my goal is still to share the latest beauty secrets with others.” Dianna Sellers Aspire Skincare & Beauty 140 NE 2nd Ave suite 28 561-504-3992 deseller@aspireskincarebeauty.com

Colony Cabaña Club

Where Heaven Meets Earth By Diane Feen Photos by melissa korman

{

If heaven has an earthly counterpart it lies just South of Linton Blvd. on A1A. The entrance has no flashy signs and no handsome valet parkers. In its place is a glorious beach club that beckons you inside with an allure that is purely magical.

The Colony Cabaña Club has always been an oasis of serenity, but the pool area was recently renovated by the architecturally brilliant owner, Jestena Boughton. The tropical foliage continues to nurture the grounds with its inherent beauty but additional palm trees have joined their ranks. The crowning glory of this updated jewel is the salt water swimming pool, which was originally built in 1957. Although authenticity is the hallmark of this beach club, the pool area was ripe for up a facelift. Not a major operation, mind you, but a rejuvenation that melds history with art as its muse. The rectangular pool (that replaced a kidney shaped one) is tastefully decorated with hand-painted floral tiles, 84 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

artistic pavers and a plunge pool with marine colored glass and clamshell fountain. The pool is now quite suitable for swimming laps with its 25 meters (82 ft. by 42 ft.) and regulation Olympic size. With its overlapping infinity style, the refection of the water seems to cast a glow over those sitting nearby. It doesn’t take too much to mesmerize beach club guests because of the subtle new touches of color that have been added. Cloth covered wood cushioned chairs and chaise lounges are complemented by lime green end tables and blue umbrellas by the pool. New cabanas were added that face the beach and a bright green fence encases all this wonderment. Boughton’s philosophy has always been about preserving the inherent brilliance of Florida’s native fiber and lifestyle, and it is with this mindset that she has gone about updating the pool area. If you’re not familiar with this hidden treasure it is one of the Colony Hotel’s finest assets. Although the Colony Cabaña Club is a private beach club, it is available for use by all Colony Hotel guests. The beach club has a private 250-feet beach, a heated salt-water pool, 29 beach cabañas, sturdy cloth umbrellas, colorful seashell decorated changing rooms, showers, towels and complimentary WiFi and parking. There is also a quiet area drenched in Florida’s finest foliage with comfy chairs. They also serve lunch (from noon to 2:30) at their outdoor ocean view Sea Grape Grill. Choices range from sandwiches to grilled specialties, burgers and a kids menu. And the best part – they have a chef who makes fresh meals with local ingredients. Although it seems like a typical beach club café, Jerry Feigelson knows

otherwise. “I come to the Colony Hotel and Cabaña Club a few times a year with my wife Shelly and we love it. The new pool and landscaping is unbelievable. But the café is a diamond in the rough. The food is fresh and creatively done and the service is incredible. It is so great here we like to keep it a secret.” What’s not a secret is that The Colony Cabaña Club is pet friendly and offers private cabanas for rent to members and guests of the hotel. If you decide to stay at the hotel, one of Florida’s truest treasures, there is van service to take you to the beach club. It’s one of the reasons that retired business executive Ken Frey comes from Rhode Island every year. “I have been staying at the Colony Hotel for four years and my wife and I love The Cabaña Club. The recent renovation of the pool area is magnificent and we love to come here to relax,” said Frey as he clutched a book by Robert Steele. When the full moon rises (once a month) Cabaña Club guests get to celebrate this celestial event at the full moon party. Guests and members can bring their own food and beverages and listen to live music. Ice, glasses and a refrigerator is provided so guests can bring their own wine, tablecloths and food for the evening. The Colony Cabaña Club is also available to rent for special events, sunset cocktail parties, private dinners, beach

weddings and receptions. “The spectacular ocean views and colorful sunsets are the perfect backdrop to making life-long memories. We will help personalize the arrangements for you as well.” If you haven’t been to The Colony Hotel you’re in for a rare treat. It’s a mixture of old world charm combined with historical Florida significance. The colorful Flaglerera Mediterranean style hotel adheres to its early roots but has enough of modernity to make it an ideal place for a vacation or stay-cation. The calming presence - and lack of pretense – is what provides guests with a true vacation from reality and big city life. Boughton has kept the hotel’s spirit intact with the original terrazzo flooring, Ficks Reed wicker furniture, a player piano, hand-operated Otis elevator, a switchboard and a sweeping banquet room that hails from another era. The wood paneled bar in the lobby also adds coziness and relevance, and the rooms are authentically charming. The Colony Hotel is clearly a historic landmark that harkens back to an earlier time and place when charm and authenticity trumped glitz and glass. Rand McNally Teams with Delray Beach To Create New Mobile Tourism Information App by Rich Pollack

{

Vacationers or business travelers heading to South Florida can now find out all they need to know about what Delray Beach has to offer while they’re on the go, thanks to a new mobile app created by Rand McNally as part of its new Best Town Travels program.

The app, which can be downloaded for free, provides visitors and potential visitors from all over the country with easy access to everything from an overview of the area to listings of things to do, places to stay and restaurants to visit. “If you’re on the road and on your way to Florida, you can plan your whole visit to Delray Beach before you even get here,” says Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC), who worked with Rand McNally to help build the app. ”This is one more way we’re helping to lead people from all over the country to Delray Beach. Set to officially launch next year, Rand McNally’s Best Town Travel guide will include apps for selected cities from around the country. The cost for the program is expected to be $15,000 per city; however, there is no charge for Delray Beach because it was chosen by Rand McNally to be the test site. “We’re honored that Rand McNally selected Delray Beach for the Beta test after interviewing several other cities,” Immelman said. “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our community.” Rand McNally representatives said a previous working relationship with the DBMC and a comprehensive visitor information website already in place, helped make Delray Beach an easy choice to be the first in the Best Towns Travels guide. “Delray Beach was a previous proud winner of our annual Best of the Road program and provided us with valuable input and feedback while we were developing the concept and functionality of the app,” said Rebecca Oistad, 86 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

vice president of Digital Strategy and Business Development for Rand McNally. “Delray Beach already had the VisitDelrayBeach.org website, content and team in place to work hand in hand with our group.” With just a few taps on a smart phone or tablet, those interested in visiting Delray Beach can see photos of the area and get listings of several attractions and hospitality-related businesses. “This is an easy and efficient way to find the best places to stay and attractions to see while visiting in Delray Beach,” said Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of the DBMC. Initially, Chrisanthus said, Rand McNally limited how many listings it included but the num-

ber will continue to grow over time. “The app is loaded with great information already, but we’ll be adding more in the coming months,” he said. The free app is available at: https://itunes. apple.com/us/app/visit-delray-beach/ id767710231 To view the Best Town Travels guide for Delray Beach online visit: http://apps.facebook. com/delray-beach-guide/ For those looking for more information, the app also offers a link to the comprehensive website, developed by the DBMC – www.visitdelraybeach.org “The website is great for more details, but when you’re on the go, the app is the easy way to find everything you need,” Chrisanthus said. Both Immelman and Chrisanthus say the partnership on the development of the app has helped assure top quality and also helps further link Delray Beach to Rand McNally, the trusted name for road-trip information. “We’re tied to Rand McNally and to their national brand,” Immelman said. “Ours is the app that they’ll be showcasing across the country.”

DELRAY DENTAL It’s A Family Affair By diane feen

photos by melissa korman

If there’s one thing that Dr. John and Dr. Ted Ritota are adamant about it’s that customer service has gone the way of the Edsel. And they’re right.

That’s why they’re taking it up a notch to offer not only great dentistry, but excellent customer service. While customer service may be an overused term in our vernacular it’s alive and well at Delray Dental. “We excel at immediate relief of pain and if there’s an emergency we get you in the office as soon as possible. The weekend of the Championship Football games I got a call at 6:30pm from a patient whose veneer had popped off. She wanted to know if we could see her right away and within 35 minutes we corrected her dental problem,” said Dr. John. Emergency care is only one aspect of what makes Delray Dental such a unique place in today’s business climate. Not only have Dr. John and Dr. Ted been practicing dentistry for the past 33 years – but

it’s been in the same Delray Beach location. They also come from a long line of medical professionals. Their father Dr. John P. Ritota was a dentist for 57 years in New Jersey and their uncle Michael was a cardiologist for 63 years. And to make this family-centric office a trifecta their mother Dolores now works in the office three days a week. Although Dolores is proud of her two sons, there are others in the community who are equally as smitten with their dental abilities. “I had all my silver fillings replaced with a new technology and they did a beautiful job. I also had cosmetic work done and it was outstanding work. They’re not only meticulous, but they are great doctors and great gentlemen,” said Michael DeSimone.

Dr. John and Dr. ted ritota 88 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Delray Dental could be classified as old-fashioned dentistry, but the old fashioned part is purely familial and caring. They have all the latest technologies and pride themselves on doing all aspects of dentistry - implants, crowns, tooth extractions, root canal, bonding, orthodontics, cosmetics and general dentistry. “We can both surgically place and cosmetically restore your dental implants in one convenient location, avoiding the need to travel from office to office,” said Dr. Ted. The other part of this old-fashioned philosophy, that they so willingly adhere to, is about patient care. Each dentist will spend whatever time is necessary to take care of their patients. It’s not a sprint in this office, but rather a slower steady pace toward perfection. “Our philosophy, and that of our friendly staff, is to make available the best possible treatment for each individual and to treat the entire person not just the teeth.” You don’t have to tell Boca Raton resident Kristen about that, she already knows. “My father is in a nursing home and I was told to call Dr. John to care for his teeth. I liked him so much that I started going to see him as well. He has done fillings and cleanings for me and has taken such good care of my father. Delray Dental even has a wheelchair ramp, all you have to do is call ahead and they will be ready for you.” Both dentists also consult with patients to discuss the best mode of treatment. One size does not fit all at this practice. “When it comes to implants I give patients the

Dr. john and Ted ritota with The delray dental staff: Brenda, Gracila, Luz, Dolores and Kimberly

best option for their particular need. Conventional dentistry is often a better option because it costs the same and is much less invasive. If you lose a tooth between two teeth that have large fillings then you might need a three-unit bridge. But if you lose a tooth that has two good teeth surrounding it then an implant is ideal,” said Dr. Ted. Delray Dental is also on the cutting edge of dental equipment and practices. They are now using zirconium crowns, which are closer in appearance to natural teeth. “The zirconium crown is far superior in strength and allows us to place a natural looking tooth in a patient’s mouth. This is the best thing to come along in dentistry for a long time,” said Dr. John. Another new addition to Dental Delray, that addresses the overall health of patients, is a line of Nutraceutical supplements called Nussentials. “These liquid vitamins and minerals help patient’s immune system and overall health. Nussentials has helped us treat gingivitis and low Vitamin D levels. Because they are liquid they’re faster acting and 75- 90 percent greater absorptive then pill vitamins.” If you want to know more about Delray Dental, there’s a lot to tell. Dr. John graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and is a member of the South

Palm Beach County Dental Association. He is trained in all types of Dental Implant Systems and was in the Outstanding Young Men In America as a recipient of the Van Cliburn Award for extensive TMJ Dental Research. Dr. Ted graduated from the Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dentistry and is a member of the South Palm Beach County Dental Association. He also has advanced training in most major implant systems and has completed surgical resi-

dencies for the placement of implants. Both Dr. John and Dr. Ted have appeared in “Guide to America’s Top Dentists” and are dedicated to giving top notch dental care. “In our office you are a patient not a number. We pursue quality care and treat you like family.”

Bringing Relief to You and Your Car By diane feen

So it makes perfect sense that Di Maria would gravitate toward a profession that celebrates the perfection of cars. After owning an insurance auto appraisal company in Long Island he opened his first collision repair shop in Inwood, New York. That was in 1992, since then the wheels of opportunity have turned toward success for Di Maria and his passion for repairing cars. “Nobody wants to be in an auto accident, but we pride ourselves on being able to turn an unfortunate circumstance into a stress-free positive experience,” said the owner of West Delray Collision Center. When Di Maria speaks people listen. That’s because his shop is ASE and I-Car Gold Class with I-Car Platinum Certified mechanics. The shop has the latest auto collision equipment and technology and uses environmentally “green” BASF Waterborne Paint. With all the high tech performance enhancing equipment and state-of-the-art machines to fix automobiles, it is the low tech perks that keep people enamored with West Delray Collision Center. “We take great pride in our status as a dealer preferred collision center, which means our certified repairs are considered the highest level of repair service available. possible. In all my years in New York I had an excellent reputation.” Roth talks about customer service and patience as virtues similar to the Ten Commandments. He stresses that quality cannot be rushed, but when a car leaves his shop it looks as good as it did when it was brand new. “We cross our T’s and dot our I’s. I am here to make sure we exceed your expectations and keep the quality of care at a superior level. From the inception of the repair to the final details and delivery of this process – your car will be checked and rechecked, so everything is perfect,” said Roth, whose motto is: “We care for your car as if it were our own!” That is why Di Maria has entrusted Roth to

carry on the torch of excellence in auto collision repair to the West Delray Collision Center. It’s also the reason he instituted the 24-hour a day seven day a week help desk. This way you can call them anytime you have an accident and they will walk you through the whole process. If you need them in the middle of the night they will be there for you. These are some of the perks that have garnered West Delray Collision Center loyal customers. “Our business has increased 150 percent in the past four years. Our customer satisfaction is unsurpassed,” said Di Maria. Another customer perk is their policy of giving all customers a complimentary complete detailing. That includes a full machine compounding and waxing, wet sand and polish by hand, glass treatment, tire dressing, touch-up paint service and a complete interior vacuuming, carpet shampooing and console cleaning. West Delray Collision sits on 2.5 acres and has a waiting area that is comfortable and inviting. They also have a full-time courtesy vehicle to pick-up and drop-off customers. “Our customers continued trust and confidence in our work ensures our future. We have grown over the years and our customer base has expanded and our productivity increased. We welcome everyone to West Delray Collision and guarantee excellence.” West Delray Collision Center 9701 W Atlantic Ave - Delray Beach, Florida 33472 (561) 638-8300 or 888-360-5585 westdelraycollision.com For NY shops call (516) 599-1177 www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | March 2014

FRANCES FONTAINE BOURQUE A Delray Beach Sacred Treasure By Diane Feen Photo by melissa korman

{

There’s an aura of energy that floats around (and above) Frances Bourque. The matriarch of restoration and revelation in Delray Beach has spent years preserving what has become the gold standard of culture in our town.

It may not have always been an easy task, but Bourque never wavered in her commitment to Old School Square. If you ask her she will tell you it was a team effort, but if you listen to the people who surrounded her in those early days, you might hear otherwise. “Frances has been the most instrumental person among a lot of good Delray folks in reshaping this city. Center for the Arts at Old School Square was the catalyst for the redevelopment of Delray Beach. It was her perseverance, personality and intellect that made it happen. She is simply the best,” said the architect who restored OSS, Bob Currie. When you meet Bourque you know she is a woman of determination who knows how to circumvent the cracks and crevices of life. She does it with an acute sense of possibilities and a mega dose of optimism. As the daughter of a long line of Southern woman who forged a path when there were no bulldozers for women, Bourque is a chip off the old block. “When my mother was pregnant with me she was driving to Jacksonville to meet my father, but she didn’t make it so she stopped in Ft. Pierce and I was delivered by my uncle Steve (an OBGYN),” said the great granddaughter of a former Dean of Women at Wesleyan College. Growing up in Belle Glade, Florida she inherited a firm sense of place and possibilities. Both her grandfather and father were farmers and Bourque, who was the Valedictorian of her high school graduation class, inherited their entrepreneurial spirit and fierce protection of history and heritage. By looking at Bourque you would never know her father was a farmer. She is always neatly coiffed and possesses the rare balance of both femininity and force. How else could she have saved the dilapidated buildings that housed the 1913 Delray Elementary School and 1925 Delray High School from demolition? “In 1986 they were going to tear down the schools and build a mall to bring people to downtown Delray. So,

March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

the Mayor at the time, Doak Campbell asked me to be on a task force. I ended up going to Tallahassee to get money from the state.” Bourque never just dips her toe into the whirlwind of change, she defines it. After going to Tallahassee she taught herself to write grants and ended up getting more money for the OSS preservation project than the state had ever given. That is probably the reason she was asked to review grants for the state and ended up becoming the Chairman of the Florida State Historical Preservation Board. When you meet Bourque it’s not hard to see how others followed her crusade to save the cultural heart of Delray. Her enthusiasm and dedication to Old School Square is palpable and she admits that there is little delineation between them. As she points out the depth of the ceiling in the lobby (known as the cupola) she establishes its connection to her persona. “You can’t interview me without knowing about Old School Square.” She’s right. When asked about Bourque most people talk about her being the savior (and head visionary) for the arts and cultural renaissance of Delray. They also talk about her ability to listen to people with laser focus and get others on board when they don’t see the colorful rainbow she sees. “I was assigned to work with Frances by Jim Pennington on a historical restoration arts project. So we walked around the old dilapidated buildings of OSS and she saw things with rosy glasses that I did not see. When I went back to Jim I told him that she must be smoking something funny because she is seeing something that I am not seeing. She saw the ugly duckling but was able to envision it as the beautiful swan it could become,” said Bob Barcinski, Assistant City Manager of Delray Beach, who remembers OSS as being surrounded by a high chain link fence with barb wire. Barcinski isn’t the only one who credits Bourque with vision that mirrors that of a wizard. Everyone

who knows her is charmed and stunned by the miracles that come to fruition in her midst. “When you look at the Center for the Arts today, you realize that Frances was truly a visionary who saw what the future could hold, not only for the arts, but for preservation in Delray. Her tenacity and passion made us all believers, and the City of Delray continues to enjoy the benefits of her incredible wisdom,” said Joe Gillie, President/CEO of Delray Beach Center For The Arts at OSS. As a person the Bourque talent is legendary. She has been described as a visionary with leadership, tenacity, passion and a true understanding of historical preservation. To some this might be monumental, but to Bourque it’s simply the fiber of her being. “Every component of the arts is the legacy we leave behind for the next generation. How we sing, how we dance and how we play determines the voice of the community. It’s not about me; it’s about bringing people together.” And that is what she has done. Children, adults and tourists have benefited from the cultural hub that now sustains Delray. Bourque’s family has also benefited from her leadership and heartfelt commitment. “I was lucky to have her as a mother. I learned about honesty, integrity and that nothing is better than hard work,” said Bourque’s son Noel, a Senior Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch. Frances has four children, nine grandchildren and is marred to Dr. Robert Bourque. When asked what keeps her looking so young her answer is quite startling. “Doing volunteer work is the cheapest facelift on the planet. We all worked very hard - the awards and accolades were serendipity - we just wanted to enhance the community. Talented people came together, put their egos aside, and the stars just aligned.” Of course they did. The biggest star of them all was leading the pack.

The Luck Of The Irish

TIM FINNEGANS IRISH PUB

Sausage Rolls: Irish sausage meat wrapped in puffy pastry & baked to golden brown

By Diane Feen

{

Photos by melissa korman

There are a lot of regulars at Tim Finnegans Irish Pub. Some come for food, others for a sip of good Irish Whiskey and still others enjoy the food, the drinks and the friendly banter.

But, there is one thing that everyone agrees on - Tim Finnegans is one of the only traditional Irish pubs in Delray Beach. It’s also a place where strangers become friends and Irish folks (and others) get to indulge in homemade traditional Irish food. For those not familiar with this genre of culinary specialties it goes like this: There’s Bangers and Mash, Shepherd’s pie, Potato Soup, Scotch Eggs, Guinness Wings, Corned Beef and Cabbage, and Fish and Chips. Although these dishes have a heritage that dates back to the late 19th century, owner Lisa Walsh makes sure Chef George whips them up fresh every day. That’s the reason Adam Gallagher ate lunch there every day for the past four years. Unfortunately Gallagher no longer works in Delray Beach, but that didn’t stop him from driving with his two children and wife Meegan from Lantana to Tim Finnegans. “Lisa is awesome and the food is terrific. I love the Scotch Eggs, Fish and Chips and Bangers and Mash. We also love the atmosphere.” 110 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Scotch Eggs: hard broiled eggs wrapped in Irish sausage meat & crispy bread crumbs

There are a lot of people who feel the same way as Gallagher. The wait staff, bartenders and guests are about as friendly as you can get (unless you’ve been stranded on a desert island) and the food is fresh and tasty. There are few tables that don’t have a piping hot Shepherd’s Pie or crispy Scotch Eggs on them. Both dishes are as popular as a Guinness Beer on a Saturday night. If you’re not familiar with Shepherd’s Pie it’s one of the mainstays of Irish culinary culture. Made with slow simmered ground beef, onions, peas and carrots and topped with fresh homemade mashed potatoes, Tim Finnegans does it just right. Scotch Eggs may not be on the menu at your favorite Italian restaurant, but they are in the hall of fame at this local haunt. The eggs are hard boiled and wrapped in Irish Sausage with crispy bread crumbs fried to golden brown. You also have your choice of dipping sauces, Mango Chutney (our favorite) or mustard. If you like sausage you must try their Sausage Rolls. They’re made fresh everyday and baked with a delicious flakey puff pastry. Although Tim Finnegans is an authentic Irish Pub owner Lisa wants guests to know they also make wonderful American dishes on a nightly basis. There’s fresh fish every day – sometimes its Cedar Plank Atlantic salmon, other days they have peel and eat Shrimp, Blackened Mahi-Mahi or Herb encrusted baked Cod. The same goes for meat dishes. Though Montreal Steak is on the menu (it’s a NY Strip) they also have daily meat specials such as Prime Rib Delmonico, Filet Mignon and Surf and Turf. One of our favorite entrees is their homemade Fish and Chips. Made in ale batter they are crispy and served with homemade French fries and coleslaw. On Fridays the Fish and Chips are only $9.95. They also have excellent Potato Soup (topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and scallions) and terrific homemade Spinach Artichoke Dip with Asiago, Parmesan and Cheddar Cheese. If you ask Rhode Island native Ray Perron

Corned beef & cabbage- Sliced brisket over bead of green cabbage surrounded by red bliss potatoes topped w parsley cream sauce

why he comes to Tim Finnegans three or four times a week he’ll tell you. “I love this place, their Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips and Drunken Chicken are the best. I also like the atmosphere.” Perron has a point. The friendly vibes at Tim Finnegans are so contagious you can’t help but feel like part of the Finnegans family. Bartender Liam balances Guinness Beer bottles four stories high and regulars like Robyn Craine and Don McGee settle in at the bar to nibble on food and watch sports on the TV at the bar. “I come here at least two or three times a week to listen to music, have a drink or eat dinner. I like coming because everyone is friendly and it’s safe to come alone,” said Craine. Craine’s familiarity with Tim Finnegans is a byproduct of Lisa’s policy of friendliness and inclusiveness. “I want people to feel comfortable and safe here. I tell my staff that everyone is a guest and should be treated like family.” Her words have not fallen on deaf ears. The entire staff could not be more accommodating. It almost feels as if you are in Wisconsin. This heartfelt caring attitude is not just for show, it’s for real. “We have fundraisers all the

time to help people. Just last month we had a full Irish evening with bag pipes and men in Kilts. It was to help raise money for a St. Patrick’s Day festival,” said Lisa. Tim Finnegans also has a huge selection of Irish Whiskey (as well as an Irish Whiskey Tour) Bottle and Draft Beer, Wine, Specialty cocktails, Martinis and Liquors. To help this festive atmosphere pop with excitement they have Live Music, Irish Dancing, Pub Quiz night, Karaoke and Live Gaelic football and Rugby. Sundays at 3pm are Traditional Irish Musical Jam Sessions with Irish Fiddle, Tin Whistle and Bodhran Drum as well as Irish Language Classes. Come to Tim Finnegans. It’s a place where everyone knows your name and you can enjoy Authentic Irish Fare and American Specialties. Lunch is served weekdays and Saturday and Sunday is a special Irish Brunch. ARTS ║ the artists of pineapple grove

Pineapple Grove is booming. The Grove is now a bona fide Arts District with a new infusion of galleries on Northeast Second Avenue and an emerging colony of artists in Artists Alley. This series will introduce you to some of the artists that live and work in the Pineapple Grove Arts District.

Delray Beach Artist Creates Sculptures that Mix Human Form with Mechanics By Stephanie IMMELMAN

T

he first thing you notice about Magnus Sebastian’s artwork is that it’s different – very different. A self-defined computer geek by day and an artist at work on evenings and weekends, Sebastian creates what he dubs “post industrial trans-human sculptures.” “It’s where machine meets the human form,” he says. To understand what that means, you really have to see his works, which start with mannequins – sometimes antique and sometimes new – that are sliced and diced and filled with an assortment of mechanical parts from clock mechanisms to guts from an old laser printer. Look at one of Sebastian’s pieces from one angle and you’ll see a clearly defined human figure. Look at it from the reverse angle and you see the cross section of that figure filled with mechanisms and machine parts. For Sebastian, the artwork provides an outlet for his creativity – one designed to be unique and eye catching. But if you dig deep, you’ll discover that there’s also a message or two that comes with it.

“We can’t live a day without our cell phones and our computers,” he says. “I can’t help thinking that we’re losing what made us human. We’re becoming harder and just a bit more mechanical.” Sebastian also takes pride in knowing that the materials in his pieces are being recycled and reused and, in some cases, saved from a landfill graveyard. Instead of designing works of art, Sebastian spent three decades designing websites, developing programs and building networks. Then three years ago, he met artist Brenda Gordon, whose work has been shown throughout the country. Sebastian credits her with helping to inspire his return to artwork. They recently opened the Magnus and Gordon gallery in Delray Beach’s Artists Alley, with one side featuring Gordon’s more traditional work and the other showcasing Sebastian’s very different pieces. Sebastian will tell you that his pieces start with a mannequin and a general idea in his head and then just evolve as he’s going along. “A lot of times, when it’s done, I’ll say “that’s really cool’ because it’s so unique,” he said. That sentiment was echoed by visitors recently

magnus sebastian

when Sebastian showed his work at the Spectrum Miami art show in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. “I wish I had a dollar for every person who walked by and said ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before’” he said. He is also working on a new free-standing sculpture, the Delray de Milo, a take-off on the more famous Venus de Milo, except with a mermaid tail covered in chainmail. As his work continues to evolve, Sebastian has created bas-relief sculptures mounted on boards that can hang on walls. His art has attracted the attention of collectors as well as visitors to Artists Alleys Third Thursday open houses. “What I enjoy the most is seeing the reactions and seeing the wonderment,” he said. “It’s just so far outside of anything most people can imagine.” Magnus and Gordon Gallery 340 4th Street Studio 11-E Delray Beach - 954.821.8599 www.MagnusSebastian.com www.BGordonArt.com

What is in the “Veterinarian Only” Pet Foods?

O

n a daily basis, we are told by clients and pet owners that their veterinarian has recommended a special food because of some condition. They usually tell us how this single food is the only option that their pet can eat for the rest of its life and that any deviations could make them ill. Are these foods really different than from other pet foods? Do they truly have medicinal functions? Are they really “prescription only” foods that need to be used only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian? Let’s put a little common sense in as we look for the answers to these questions. Realizing that our cats and dogs are nothing more than an adaptive form of a wild carnivore, we must ask what they eat in the wild. Is dry, processed kibble found anywhere in nature? Are additives and preservatives found in nature? Do wild animals cook their food? So why does the veterinarian recommend this? According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is no prescription or functional food approved by them for pets. These “veterinary only”

diets are nothing more than a private or proprietary label, packaged food like you would find in any large store. This title only means that the veterinarians have exclusive marketing rights to it and can set their rules as to who can sell it. The ingredient label of these specialty foods basically reads just like those of the over-the-counter foods made by the same processed food companies. You will see very few whole food products listed on it, however there are additional mystery ingredients that you cannot buy yourself? Have you ever asked your veterinarian what these ingredients are and what their specific purpose is? The truth of the matter is that there is nothing “special” in these diets. In fact, most of these special diets are made from food waste that is unfit for human consumption and contain ingredients that are inappropriate for the species. Those components could actually be regarded as illegal according to the FDA standard. In reality, they could also cause long term health issues in your pet. Animals thrive properly when fed a species appropriate fresh food diet.

Our pets have been eating real, natural food since their existence began. They instinctively know what and how much to eat. Through the years of domesticating, we must not forget where and how the species was originated. Something to think about, there are no obese lions, wolves, coyotes, or panthers in nature. These self-sufficient animals do not need to supplement or use medications to lead normal healthy lives. They eat everything raw every day without health problems. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... WHAT I LEARNED IN VEGAS, THE OFFICIAL “21”… G-I-R-L-S T-R-I-P… yep, it seemed like a fun idea to get out of dodge for a few days to celebrate my approaching birthday. In the blink of an eye, we were booked for 3 nights and 4 days in SIN CITY, the other city that really never sleeps. As I write this month’s column, I am back in Florida with great photos and memories, dodged the usual post vacation cold/flu and other than my lavish shopping purchases, came back with money in my wallet without going into debt at the black jack table. This is what you call a Vegas success story! But with every success there are certainly some pitfalls. Having extensive time to reflect the highs and lows of the long weekend on the six hour plane ride home, the only conclusion I have come up with is that I am just WAY TOO OLD for that town! With that being said, I want to share my harsh reality check about life, old age, and the pursuit of a good time. What I learned in Vegas… 1. I am apparently “HOT” according to the 20-something girls. I must have heard this ten times “OMG, you are the same age as my Mom but so much hotter.” Unfortunately the under 30 men didn’t pay us much attention. Didn’t they watch “The Graduate?” Hello Mrs. Robinson? 2. There is no skirt too short or tight in Vegas. I looked like I was dressed in a Nun’s habit with my dress just skimming my knees and not hermetically sealed to my skin. 3. Better to know someone or be someone. VIP entrance to clubs is a must. Only amateurs and idiots wait in line. 4. There should be a last chance mirror on every hotel room door for individuals to re-evaluate before they actually leave. Seriously people, did you even bother to make an effort and if you did, do you really think that’s what they are showing in fashion magazines? 5. Best $10.99 investment= Dr. Scholls Fast Foldable Flats. 5 inch heels after 4 hours 130 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

= NO BUENO. 6. Nothing good happens at 2am at Fatburger. Usually someone has insomnia, stomachache, heart palps or the runs from those deadly late night carbs. 7. Stay in a non-casino, luxury hotel if you can afford it. At the end of the night, it’s a private and very easy b-line up the elevator avoiding drunks, stragglers, the ching-ching of the slots, the walk of shame and the customary cloud of cigarette smoke. 8. If you are under 30, you don’t do dinner before you go clubbing. Yes, this 35-49 crowd enjoyed the gourmet experience every night. Guess the young’ens need liquids rather than solids. 9. Day drinking = AMEX bill. Champagne in the afternoon will certainly make luxury purchases easier and far more rewarding. 10. Thank goodness for the photo filter on an IPHONE. Guaranteed awesome photos no matter how tired and sweaty you look in a club. It’s like instant botox. 11. Febreeze is a lifesaver. It’s either a double spritz or you might as well toss your clothes in the trash on your way out of town. 12. Good girlfriends always have your

back. They will be brutally honest telling you what NOT to wear, when to STOP drinking and when to SIMMER down. 13. Six hour plane rides SUCK! So does an 8am outbound flight back to Florida on only four hours of sleep. 14. Bouncers and VIP Hosts are either on a power trip or have a huge chip on their shoulder. Enough said! 15. I will never bitch about humidity. Could my skin be dryer or my nose bleed more from the dry desert air? This is why I look younger than most west coasters. 16. Hotels are NOT in walking distance of each other. This is why it’s called The Mirage! 17. There is nothing sexy or sophisticated drinking out of a long neck beer bottle or a plastic yard drinking glass especially while walking on the strip or thru a casino. 18. Buying a table and bottle service is a must or if you roll like we do, VIP COMP works just as well. 19. Three nights of club hopping in your 40’s is two nights too much. Clearly we are too old to party like it’s 1999 for 72 hours straight. Leave it to the kids to represent. 20. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. YES, and we are holding to it! 21. Girls trips are the best even at the tender age of 43. Someone wise once created the acronym YOLO!!! (You Only Live Once) Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

I’ve been reflecting lately on the past.

{

Losing someone you know suddenly, will do that to you. The recent passing of former Commissioner Pat Archer attracted a large crowd to Delray’s Unity Church -- a fitting tribute to Pat’s life and civic accomplishments.

The memorial attracted a cross-section of Delray, long time civic contributors and some newcomers who came to pay respects to Pat and her contributions to what many of the eulogists called a special time in Delray Beach. Pat served on the City Commission from 1999-2006, a tenure that mostly coincided with my own elected experience. What marked that era was a concept coined by former Commissioner Alberta McCarthy and adopted by the entire commission called “community unity.” Basically, we strived to bring people together, across racial, socio-economic, generational and geographic barriers. Truth is, we didn’t always succeed. Plenty people didn’t like us—a byproduct of being in the public eye and making decisions on what another colleague Commissioner Jon Levinson called “the big rocks.” When you don’t kick the can down the road and when you seek to do “big” things (like pass a downtown plan that encourages mixed use, restaurants, density and events, move a high school and tackle subjects like race relations) you tend to make ardent fans and enemies. It goes with the territory and we were comfortable with that. Our group was also tasked with rebuilding a police and fire department that was losing officers and firefighters because we

134 March 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

had not kept up with neighboring cities on wages and benefits. We agreed to step up and invest in public safety and to this day we take hits for it. But truth was we weren’t being generous, we were being competitive and we were playing the hand we were dealt the best way we knew how. The era was also marked by civility among commissioners. Many of us became friends and some people didn’t like that either. We were accused of being a “machine” when in truth there was no such thing. In fact, there were times when I wished there was a cavalry to summon. But there did exist an esprit d’ corps and a family feeling among a wide swath of stakeholders. That feeling pre-dated us. Since the late 80s there was a sense in Delray that the next year would be better than the one just past. The city was on an ascent—twice an All America City, written about glowingly by urban experts and visited by elected officials from cities all over the country. They came from near and far to see how “it” was done. “It”-- whether it was downtown, beach restoration, neighborhood revitalizations, a new library, arts and culture etc.—was done via team work. And in order to have effective team work you need a civil and safe public square. That does not mean no ac-

countability—in fact noted urbanist Otis Pike called our sense of accountability and honesty about our problems “a responsibility revolution.” It also does not mean you don’t debate—passionately. But it does mean that you don’t destroy people you disagree with. You don’t spread rumors via social media, send out inflammatory emails or divide along lines like they have in Washington D.C. (We all see how that’s working out don’t we?) That kind of division doesn’t work for America or for a community. And it’s not working for Delray. As we vote this month in an important local election—and I think local elections are as important as any-think about the candidates who are best equipped to unite, not divide. Who is best equipped to lead, be independent and move the “big rocks.” You’ll never have 100 percent unity, but communities that try are the ones that succeed. We don’t have to look too far to see one that did.
