Beware the Ides of March, said Shakespeare

ell William must not have been referring to Delray Beach and South Florida when he penned those cryptic words. March in the Sunshine State is glorious: Spring Break, Spring Training, beautiful spring weather and tons of things to do. In this month’s edition, we’ll learn more about the Boys and Girls Club in Delray Beach and more about a wonderful new organization called Delray Students First. We’ll also check in with our usual array of health, beauty, food, fashion and cultural experts and marvel at some great photos of local people having a good time in a very fun city. Last month, I had the pleasure of entertaining a childhood friend and his family on Atlantic Ave. My friend Scott was responsible for me moving to Florida in 1987 because he had moved here to pursue a career and to live near his parents who had relocated from Long Island to Fort Lauderdale. After four years of ice cold weather, tons of snow and whipping winds in Oswego, N.Y. I was determined to be in a warm climate as soon as I graduated college. I searched for newspaper jobs in Florida and Southern California before landing a gig for the company that published the Delray Times. Sadly, my friend moved to Northern Virginia for career opportunities but his heart remains in Florida. But he really hadn’t explored our city since the days of Ken and Hazel’s, so it was interesting to gauge his reaction when we met downtown to sample BBQ at Smoke, walk the avenue and check out the live music at Johnnie Brown’s. He loved it. And so when we arranged to meet again right before he returned to his snowy home I offered to meet him in Fort Lauderdale. He declined. Why? Because he really liked the avenue and wanted one more evening out before leaving. We had a great dinner outside, walked even further and then checked out Pineapple Grove. It’s nice to see your hometown through the eyes of a visitor, because it gives you a fresh perspective on things and a whole new appreciation for what you have. For one, we have great winter weather. While the rest of the world hibernates, we can dine outside, stroll on a starry night and even go to the beach and swim. That’s pretty cool. So as we spring ahead, take some time to smell the roses as they say and see Delray through fresh eyes. It’s quite a place. Jeff Perlman, Editor

Perhaps...

“The Only Solution Left for Some People to Get Pain Free...”

Dear Friend, Some people come in to see me and tell me they’ve “tried everything.” That’s right, four out of five people that show up in my office have been somewhere else first. Some have taken “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. That’s not what people are looking for. Often, people get frustrated and wind up in my office. I’m used to it...it’s fine with me. Health, or the lack of it, very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me... I’ve been a doctor in this town for 3 years. And, to this day, I’ve never cured anyone. You may think the word would get around and no one would come to me anymore. The opposite is true. The more people who understand, the more people come to see me. Here’s my story… I used to have debilitating migraines when I was younger. A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine. The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “Never would I have thought that a chiropractor could cure carpal tunnel syndrome, and migraines. I had tried everything from over the counter medication, prescriptions, and different types of therapies. After treatment at Schrier Family Chiropractic I no longer experience any symptoms. (Cynthia M., Delray Beach FL)

“This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) For the last 3 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with: • Headaches/Migraines • Sleeping problems • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness & Tingling • Athletic performance to name a few… Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take credit. Your body is made to heal itself, and it does that best when it’s free of nerve interference. So, as much as I’d like the credit, I can’t take it. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. I analyze the nervous system and the spine and perform specific gentle spinal adjustments to remove nerve pressure. The body responds, and often it heals itself once that nerve interference is removed. Exciting Offer-Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your prob-

lems, and not just cover them up with drugs. When you are one of the first 10 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (before March 27th, 2015) you’ll receive the entire exam for $37. That includes a consultation, paraspinal thermal nerve scan, postural analysis, and leg balance check. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this office visit usually costs $190. Again, there are only 10 appointments available, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. Our office is called Schrier Family Chiropractic and it is at 315 N.E 2nd Ave., Delray Beach (located in Pineapple Grove.) Call today for an appointment 561-445-2648. We can help you. Thank you. -Elan Schrier, D.C. P.S. We get great results with difficult and nontraditional cases.

dale Beach on Monday, January 21st. The event sold-out for the fifth consecutive year and raised more than $242,000. “The Conine Clubhouse is our legacy to the community,” said Jeff Conine. He and his wife, Cindy, founded the event. “Cindy and I take great pride in the fact that more than 800 families call the Conine Clubhouse home each year, and that these community fundraising efforts are enough to cover the annual cost of operation.” The event, which raises funds to support the operation of the Conine Clubhouse at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, moved to the Diplomat Golf Club following 20 years at the same in course in Hollywood. With Calder Casino as the title sponsor, the event welcomed a celebrity guest on each of the 35 teams including Lawrence Taylor, Yoenis Cespedes, Carl Pavano, Steve Cishek, and Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson among many others. Participants had a chance to win one of four new 2015 vehicles including a BMW, Audi, Cadillac and Jaguar, plus all-inclusive vacations, unique experiences and tennis and golf packages. In addition, each golfer enjoyed a $200 gift certificate for use at the Calder Casino onsite golf shop. Maureen Adams, President of Calder Casino, noted Calder’s continued participation as title sponsor of the Conine Golf Classic. “The Conine Clubhouse is an amazing program. I have been in the Clubhouse and understand the importance of providing a safe, warm, and family-friendly environment while your child is a patient at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, just a few feet away.” Plans are already underway for the 2016 Conine All-Star Golf Classic. Event organizers

are working with the Diplomat Golf & Tennis Club on new ideas and innovations for the 22nd annual event.

The Palm Beach Pops Receives Prestigious Bernays Award for Best Crisis Communications from the Gold Coast PR Council

Charlotte Laurent-Ottomane, Executive Director of The Palm Beach Pops, today announced that South Florida’s most loved pops orchestra has received the prestigious Bernays Award for Best Crisis Communications from the Gold Coast PR Council, the largest independent organization of public relations and marketing professionals in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin Counties. The award was presented at GCPRC’s 11th annual Bernays Awards luncheon on January 30. The award was presented by Lisa DeLaRionda, from Palm Beach County Public Affairs, who explained why the Palm Beach Pops was awarded GCPRC’s first Bernays Award in this category. When Maestro Bob Lappin, the Founder and longtime Music Director/Conductor of The Palm Beach Pops, passed away suddenly, the future of the Palm Beach Pops was in doubt. To convince longtime supporters that it was determined to survive, the Pops launched a three-part program: + Rebuild the organization and let the public know about it. + Continue the in-school education program - and let the public know about it. + Launch a new season in 2014 - and let the public know about it. continued page 14

In accepting the beautiful glass trophy, Ms. Laurent-Ottomane paid credit to “the orchestra’s many talented musicians, loyal fans and patrons, and dedicated staff members and service providers. With their guidance and support, the organization was able to effectively communicate with its constituency and to formulate strategies for the future.” She also encouraged the 80+ PR pros in the audience to attend the final Palm Beach Pops concert this season: One Singular Sensation A Tribute to the Music of Marvin Hamlish Featuring Donna McKechnie, Jodi Benson and Doug LaBrecque Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Boca Raton Community Church Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts How to Purchase Tickets to The Palm Beach Pops: For For performances at the Boca Raton Community Church call the Palm Beach Pops Box Office at 561.832.7677. Palm Beach Poetry Festival Launches Plein Air Poetry Contest Inspired by ‘En Plein Air’ Exhibit at Cornell Museum of Art

Deadline for Poetric Entries in March 8, 2015 Susan R. Williamson, Director of the Palm Beach Poetry Festival, today announced a Plein Air Poetry Contest, To enter, local writers are encouraged to submit up to 30 lines of original poetry inspired by the eight designated works from the “En Plein Air” exhibit now running at the Cornell Museum at

the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. Plein Air refers to the art of painting in outdoor daylight. The “En Plein Air” exhibit features paintings of Delray Beach and other Palm Beach County locations. The designated works are Gator at Loxahatchee Wetlands by Kerry Eriksen, Rainy Day at the Boynton Inlet by Brennan King, Misty Waters at Riverbend by Chris King, Arts Roundabout by Hope Reiss, All Pumped Up by Manon Sander, Sunny Day at Green Cay by Dale Stryker, Spring Path at Jupiter Ridge by Ruth Weiss and Sausage Tree by Sheila Wolf. “The poetic tradition of taking inspiration from works of art is called ‘ekphrasis’ from the Greek,” said Ms. Williamson. “Ekphrastic Poems may include literal descriptions of a work of art, the poet´s mood in response to a work of art, metaphorical associations inspired by a work of art, or personal memories about a work of art. It’s a tradition quite alive in America today, and we’re pleased to join with the Cornell Museum and Plein Air Palm Beach (PleinAirPalmBeach.com) to present this opportunity for poets to be inspired. Co-founder and Organizer of Plein Air Palm Beach, Bob Papa said, “As written or spoken words can evoke images for both the artist and the poet, poets may represent a visual image in words. Visual artists, particularly plein air painters capture a scene in the moment as they see it.” continued page 20

Saint Joseph’s Episcopal School “Kicks” Off School Spirit At Faculty Vs. Student Soccer Game

Saint Joseph’s Episcopal School hosted its annual faculty versus students’ soccer fundraising and community event. The student soccer team was led and coached by Tami Pleasanton, Head of School, and the faculty team was led to victory by Coaches Wideroff and Bosch, 5 to 3. Competitive spirit aside, this year’s game once again brought our community together to share in our “Live Green, Live Healthy” initiative. Every day, our students and faculty take pride in maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle that was proudly showcased on the field. “We really appreciate opportunities where our faculty and students can enjoy a chance to spend time outside the classroom. Saint Joseph’s prides itself bringing our campus community together through events such as this that echo the mission of our school,” stated Tami Pleasanton, Head of School for Saint Joseph’s.

Hair Loss

By Kenneth n. Woliner, M.d., A.B.F.M.

People just don’t understand.

“ ” Marisa definitely had hair, but that didn’t stop her from being devastated. “I’m afraid to wash my hair. I’m shedding worse than a German Shepherd in spring [1].” I’ve learned how important it is to listen to all of what my patients’ have to say; and this is especially true when doing consultations about hair loss. After a good five minutes of venting, I was able to start asking some questions. “Anything else?” “Besides my pony tail not being as thick as it used to be? I’m so worried I won’t have any hair left that my stomach is tied up in knots. I wear St. Agnes of Rome around my neck hoping my prayers will be heard soon [2]. Until then, I have to take Pepcid with my coffee.” “Other than prayer, have you tried anything else?” “I’ve seen every type of doctor you can imagine. My primary scolded me for doing the hCG diet and made me start eating again [3]. My GYN said I’m not yet in menopause so she referred me to an Endo. My thyroid tests were ‘in range’ so he sent me to the dermatologist. I’m not a candidate for steroid injections so I then went to the hair transplant surgeon for a consult. I left him with Viviscal vitamins and shampoo, prescriptions for spironolactone, Propecia, and Rogaine, but still, no hair.” “Hmmm …” As Marisa was speaking, I was simultaneously reviewing her old records. “I don’t see where they every checked you for estrogen dominance, thyroid antibodies, insulin resistance, or adrenal fatigue [4].” Dr. Woliner, that’s why I’m here. You’re known all over the Internet as someone that looks at everything.” “My practice is named ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a holistic approach. After our 80-minute consultation today, I’ll check for things that weren’t looked at yet to find the cause(s) of your hair loss. Then, we’ll put together a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet, exercise, vitamins, OTC meds, and even prescriptions, as necessary.” Marisa came back ten days later to go over her labs. “I have bad news and good news. It’s not just one thing; you have twelve different findings that are abnormal. I break them down into ‘things you’re missing that you need to get’, ‘things you got that you need to get rid of’, and ‘hormone balancing’ [5].” “What’s the good news?” “They’re all treatable! Instead of using the same cookie-cutter approach to everybody, I can tailor my therapies directly to the specific problems you have.” “Like what?” “For starters, you might not be anemic, but you’re really low in iron [6].” “I can’t take iron pills. I’m nauseated already.” “That’s okay; we can give iron to you by injection here in the office. Quite a few of my patients periodically tank up their body’s iron stores that way.” “What else did you find? “When I see a slightly low WBC (white cell) count; that’s a sign of excessive stress [7]. Your coffee isn’t the culprit, but it’s your half-fast way of self-medicating this problem. Herbs and other supplements that support your adrenals are a better answer.” “And you said something about hormones?” “Thyroid hormones (not just T4 but also T3), are necessary to keep your hair in anagen, or the ‘growing phase’, as well as to keep its coloring [8]. Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey. Your TSH might be normal, but you tested positive for Reverse T3 and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, both of which cause thyroid hormone resistance [9].” Over the next 40 minutes, I went over the rest of Marisa’s labs and the game plan to regrow her hair and rejuvenate her body. “You’ll first notice less shedding, but since hair grows only at a rate of one-half inch per month, it might take a year and a half to regain the length you used to have [10].” Six months later, Marisa gave me an update. “Dr. Woliner, my hairdresser thinks St. Agnes answered my prayers, but between you and me, I think you had something to do with it too.”

Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey.

delray under $50 By Darien Arden

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in March for $50 or less.

I

t’s that time of the year again when green is king! St. Patrick’s Day is March 17 but why wait until then to party hardy. The 47th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade is held March 13 and 14 and is a festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and drink, and a whole mess of green. All of Delray’s Irish and Irish-atheart members will rejoice in their heritage and honor the service of the International Firefighters and service members. The parade features marching pipe and drum bands from around the world, including Ireland, Belgium, Germany and more. The fun begins with the Celtic Siamsa Party Friday at 5 p.m. where you’ll be privy to Irish dancing, traditional pipe and drum bands, Irish storytelling, food, beer and live music, in addition to Master Leprechaun Jake De Fayke who will entertain you with everything Irish. The party continues Saturday at 11 a.m. with pre-parade festivities until the parade begins at 2 p.m. I love, love, love parades, and you and the family are encouraged to come out and cheer on our local law enforcement and emergency service personnel, and local businesses, schools and organizations. There is no charge to attend the events so that leaves plenty of green for some green beer. Cheers! The Festival and Parade is held along Atlantic Avenue and the Delray Beach Center 24 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

have ideas all the time. Not all of them are good (or even half good), but try and stop me now. However, Hudson at Waterway East is the delightful brain child of some really great idea-laden minds. Their passionate (and drinkable, if you ask me) motto of “Love Thy Craft” is easy to swallow when you grab a seat at the wooden bar, order a crafted and immensely delicious cocktail and gaze upon

the calming ebb and flow of the Intracoastal. If you’re in the mood for having a great idea, order the Roasted Tomato Bisque with truffled grilled cheese for $15. When you’re ready for something more, order the Signature Brisket-Short Rib Burger with Vermont cheddar and Hudson sauce for $17. This is probably one of the best burgers I’ve had on the Avenue, without a doubt. And, yes, you will need more than one napkin. If you’re thinking cap is begging for another tasty idea, sink your face into the Pork Porterhouse with sweet potato puree, braised rainbow Swiss chard, Hudson bourbon peaches, Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions and a red grape demi for $29. Your brain has never had it so good. Hudson is located at 900 E. Atlantic Ave. Call (561) 303-1343 or visit www.hudsondelray.com for more information.

eports state that adults laugh less than 20 times per day and that babies laugh around 300. I feel I’m somewhere in between (stuck in teenage land, if you will), but am always ready to throw back a good laugh. March is Humorists Are Artists Month and this is a perfect time to focus on the “haha” factor and get more of it in our lives. Thankfully we have an hilarious comedian coming to the Crest Theatre stage and his show should not be missed. Tom Cotter is the comical comedian who was the 2013 winner of

America’s Got Talent and states that if laughter is the best medicine, the audience should prepare to be heavily medicated. Tom is known for his high energy and rapid-fire style of comedy that leaves audiences clutching their sides and rolling in the aisles (I’d like to see that happen for real). His comedic resume is a mile long, but in the past year alone, he filmed a 30 minute special for Comedy Central, won the grand prize at the Boston Comedy Festival and was voted “Best Stand-Up” at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival. I’ll gladly ready my piercing laugh for this guy. Catch a Rising Star: Tom Cotter is held Wednesday, March 18 at 8 p.m. and tickets are $50. The Crest Theatre is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Call (561) 243-7922 or visit www.delrayarts.org for more information and to purchase tickets.

ou had me at bacon, and then were so sweet to follow it up with some bourbon. It’s like a cherry ice cream with a delightful cherry on top, and I tip my hat to you. March is International Expect Success Month and I fully expect great success for the First Annual Bacon and Bourbon Festival. Held March 28 and 29, you are invited to join your local neighbors and celebrate what the event creators call the most beloved food in the universe (curtain call for bacon) and the ultimate American-made spirit (beefy, beautiful bourbon). The event features seminars and tastings if you’d like to explore the innards of pig and barrel, and also a wide range of pig and pork products ranging from delicious to off-the-charts crazy, in addition to a waterfall of bourbon and whiskeys to tickle your palate. General admission tickets are $25 and include a $10 voucher for food and beverage, in addition to jazzy live music and fine entertainment. This festival is set up for success and I’ll happily oink and gulp my way through the food tour. The Festival is held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Park, 51 N. Swinton Ave., from 2 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Call (561) 279-0907 or visit www.delraybaconandbourbonfest.com for more information.

have yet to figure out my spiritual animal, but I’m on the path. If you need some help connecting with your spiritual wellness and your “green” being, look no further than WellFest Delray 2015. March is Spiritual Wellness Month and even though the journey to wellbeing should be constant, check out the festival if you need a kick start in the “om” bottom. You are invited to Live Well and Go Green as the overall goal of the event is to inspire visitors to stay fit, eat well, think positively, take a holistic approach to healthcare, be environmentally responsible and to go green. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event and peruse the myriad of merchants and health advocators in order to better their lifestyle, mind and health. The festival is held March 7 and 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Park. It’s basically like a onestop-shop for what you would need to get working toward a healthier status or maintaining a balanced life. The Delray Beach Center for the Arts Park is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Call (561) 921-5182 or visit www.wellfestusa.com for more information.

March 6 March begins with some “Unfinished Business.” Vince Vaughn stars as Daniel Trunkman, a hard-working small business owner who takes his two best employees (Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco) on a junket to Europe to land their biggest business deal ever. Things don’t exactly go as planned. Fort Lauderdale native Steve Conrad (“The Promotion”) wrote the script, which is directed by Ken Scott, who previously directed Vaughn in “The Delivery Man.” Writer-director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) has cooked up a sci-fi comedy called “Chappie.” Chappie (South African actor Sharlto Copley) is a gifted, sensitive child, but Chappie is a robot. Copley previously was Stefan in “Maleficent.” Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman are also featured. “The Second Best Exotic Marigold” is a sequel to the sleeper comedy about The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful in Jaipur, India. Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) is about to marry his dream girl, Sunania (Tena Desae) while coping with the problems of running a small hotel, which include deciding who gets the last remaining vacancy. Returning are Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) Muriel (Maggie Smith), with Diana Hardcastle, Richard Pickup and Celia Imrie.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” is a sequel to the 2014 movie based on the 2012 novel by Veronica Roth. Shaillene Woodley is Beatrice “Tris” Prior, on the run with Four (Theo James) in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Chicago. Hunting them is Jeanne (Kate Winslet), boss lady of the Erudite Elite. Robert Schwentke (“R.I.P.D.”) directs. Scheduled are two more Divergent cliff-hangers. Gee, wonder what “The Gunman” could be about? Sean Penn stars as the title character; a former Special Forces soldier with PTSD on the run from London to Barcelona trying to connect with a lost love and clear his name at the same time Pierre Morel (“From Paris with Love”) directs a cast that includes Javier Bardem, Ray Winstone, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca. The story is based on Patrick Manchett’s novel, “The Prone Gunman.”

March 27 “Get Hard” is not what you think. It’s a screwball R-rated comedy marking the directorial debut of screenwriter Etan Cohen (“Men in Black III,” “Tropic Thunder”). Will Ferrell is James, a millionaire hedge fund manager who is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin. In order to “get hard” for prison life, James hits up his black friend Darnell (Kevin Hart) for pointers on surviving prison life. Darnell does not fit the thug stereotype however. There is no place like “Home.” This is a computer-animated feature set in the future when an alien race Boov has taken over Earth and relocated its humans, all except for Tip (voice of Rihanna), a resourceful girl who has eluded capture. Tip joins forces with Oh (Jim Parson), a banished Boov, and they set off on the road trip of a lifetime. Steve Martin is the voice of Capt. Smek. The story is based on Adam Rex’s 2007 book “The True Meaning of Smekday.”

March 13 “Cinderella” is billed as an adventure, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Lily James stars as Ella, the orphaned cinder girl abused by her stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her cruel daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drizella (Sophie McShera). As in the classic 1950 Disney animated feature, Ella will find her Prince named Kit (Richard Madden) with a little help from her Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter). Stellan Skarsgard plays the Arch Grand Duke.

Bob Seger

Rocks South Florida By Skip Sheffield photos by Tom Craig

bob seger

Seger turns 70 on May 6 and he has been rocking since 1961 in his native Michigan. Perhaps that’s why this working class hero sold out his February 7 concert at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. His hair may be almost white and he wears glasses, but Seger proved he still has what it takes when he brought his new, improved and enlarged Silver Bullet band to town.

44 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

{

In January of 2015, Bob Seger told Rolling Stone magazine his current tour would probably be his last.

Opening the show was a new talent, Clare Dunn, who warmed up the house and thanked Seger profusely for choosing her as opening act. Dunn is billed as country but she looks and sounds more like rock ‘n’ roll and she has the voice guitar chops to prove it. The Silver Bullet Band included such long-time members as bassist Chris Campbell and saxophonist Alto Reed and such newcomers as one-time Boca Raton resident and former Grand Funk Railroad singer-drummer Don Brewer. Jim “Moose” Brown is an outstanding lead guitarist who also doubles on keyboards. There was a four-piece trumpet section; fiddle and mandolin by Denise Richardson and three female backup singers. If you counted alto reed

Clare Dunn

Seger, there were a dozen musicians onstage. Everyone got their money’s worth with a set list of 16 of Seger’s best songs starting with “The Fire Down Below.” The Silver Bullets blasted through such favorites as “Mainstreet,” “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Her Strut,” “We’ve Got Tonight” and even a couple covers; Steve Earle’s “The Devil’s Right Hand” and John Hurt’s “Detroit Made.” The wildly enthusiastic audience demanded and received three encores with four songs, ending appropriately with “Rock and Roll Never Forgets.” No, no one will forget Bob Segar or this special night in a Sunrise hockey arena.

How To Fix That “Pain In The Neck”

{

By Dr. John Conde

Neck pain can be, well, a “pain in the neck.” It is estimated that 10% of Americans (that’s 30,500,496 people!) are currently suffering from neck pain.

The traditional treatment prescribed by physicians utilizing pain relievers, muscle relaxants, rest, and possible soft collar application is no longer the acceptable standard of care as this regimen only produces symptomatic relief. According to a landmark report furnished by the Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders (which can be found in the peer reviewed medical journal Spine), some of the most effective treatments for neck pain include manipulation, mobilization, massage, and exercise. In addition, cutting-edge research is exposing the benefits of brain-based therapeutic exercises for the relief and prevention of neck pain due to the brain’s intimate control of neck muscles. The neck is the most dynamic part of the spine. Its main functions are to protect the spinal cord, provide the foundation for the skull, and act as a bridge connecting the skull with the rest of the body. However, it has to be flexible enough to allow movement in six different planes. This makes the neck the most vulnerable region of the spine to injury. It is lined with a high concentration of compression sensitive sensors (joint mechanoreceptors), which when triggered provide a high powered stimulation to the brain which is essential for its health. The small muscles which surround the neck play a large role in the overall health of the neck. Reflexes generated in these muscles in response to stretch relay through a 46 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

certain part of the brain termed the cerebellum which then fire back to keep these same muscles strong. As a result, brainbased therapies geared towards the cerebellum produce amazing results concerning the overall stability of the neck. The most common neck complaints involve three distinct structures: the disc, the posterior joints of the spine also known as the facet joints, and the soft tissue regions including the ligaments and tendons surrounding the spine. Injury to the discs which are found between the vertebrae and

act as shock absorbers will produce moderate to severe neck pain with associated pain into the arm and hand. The pain may be relieved momentarily with elevation of the affected arm over the head. Facet joint injuries will also manifest as neck and arm pain but may start without an offensive behavior like a trauma and will typically produce pain down the outer arm into the hand. Lastly, soft tissue injury will normally produce localized pain with severe restriction of movement. Nausea and headache may accompany the pain. This is commonly found after motor vehicle accidents. Many new, advanced therapies are combining physical medicine such as mobilization exercises, stretch/strengthening exercises, myofascial release, traction, decompression, and nutrition with brain-based exercises targeting the cerebellum region of the brain. This approach not only focuses on the neck structures themselves but also the regions of the brain that control the deep intrinsic muscles of the neck producing greater stability. Stop hurting and start living. Dr. John Conde is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist. He has achieved Diplomate status through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. He has subspecialty training in vestibular disorders and traumatic brain injuries. The Conde Center For Chiropractic Neurology integrates traditional chiropractic medicine with advanced neurological rehabilitation protocols. The office can be reached at 561-330-6096 and at thecondecenter.com.

Body Contouring

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

Body contouring has been growing in popularity, and not just among celebrities. Most of us have a little “pooch” that we would love to get rid of. With so many options to choose from it can be easy to get confused about what works, what doesn’t and which option is best for you.

If you’re looking for a way to reshape your body but don’t want to have surgery, liposuction or down time, these non-surgical options are very impressive. Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting is a one-hour, nofuss, non-surgical, fat-cell-destroyer that requires neither healing time nor a single suture. During a CoolSculpting session, an oblong molded cup is placed over the lower stomach or love handles; heavyduty suction pulls one’s fat inside the cup, where it’s chilled to about 5˚C (41˚F). After the one hour treatment, the hand piece is removed. The flesh is now frozen in the shape of a frozen, pink, stick of butter, distinct from the rest of the abdomen. Then the process is repeated on the next treatment area. Total time can be 3-6 hours depending on the number of treatment sites. Some of the fat cells in the selected area are destroyed and ultimately disposed of by the liver, a process that can take four to six months. CoolSculpting is capable of removing 25 percent of the fat that fits in the cup for treatment. It is FDA cleared and safe but patients often complain of pain at the treatment area for several days following treatment. The hot competitor to fat-freezer Zeltiq is the Liposonix, a gadget that liquefies fat using high-intensity, focused ultrasound. The manufacturers of Liposonix don’t make claims about specific weight loss, but they use the tagline: “One treatment, one hour, one size smaller.” Lipo¬sonix heats fat to 55˚C as the technician moves the hand piece around your abdominal fat for the one hour treatment. The heat melts fat cells which stimulates the im48 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

mune system to clean up the damaged fat cells and take that damaged fat to the liver. The body then clears it. Most patients see results within four to six weeks. During treatment, the patient may feel discomfort, cold, prickling, and tingling. After

treatment there may be pain, redness, swelling, and bruising, but most people tolerate it quite well. Bigger and Better is the BTL device called Vanquish. Similar to Liposonix it uses heat to melt fat, only Vanquish uses a radio frequency technology, not ultrasound. With its huge panel that covers the entire abdominal area and love handles simultaneously, it is a clear winner based simply on the size of the treatment area. Other obvious benefits to Vanquish are that it is completely painless, before, during and after treatment. No technician or hand piece ever touches you...the panel just hovers over the treatment area. What may be its most remarkable asset is that there is a panel to treat the stubborn arm and leg fat too, making Vanquish the most versatile body contouring machine on the market. With as little as four 45min treatments, spaced about a week apart, patients can shrink from 2-4 inches! For most patients on the brink of trying a little body sculpting, Vanquish is clearly the first choice. To wiggle out of some fat tissue painlessly outshines even “the chocolate diet.” A simple hour of warm contemplation could be the impetus that sets in place a treatment plan for a firmer and more fit YOU. health & beauty ║ Your Dental Health

Do you really need to see your dentist twice a year?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

This widely accepted standard might not apply to you.

We all know that it’s important to brush and floss daily, maintain a healthy diet and see your dentist regularly, but just how often should you get your teeth professionally cleaned? For quite some time, dental professionals have recommended a teeth cleaning every six months. However, this rule of thumb was designed with the “average” person in mind and now that healthcare is more personalized, standards are becoming less and less “standard.” Importance of Cleanings The purpose behind dental cleanings is to maintain healthy teeth, gums and bones, which contribute to good overall health. We’re all familiar with plaque, which is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria and saliva, and when this is not removed (brushed off, for instance), it turns into calculus. When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy gums and bone. If you’re not cleaning your teeth well enough, or having a hygienist do it for you, you’re causing damage to your oral cavity that will be more difficult to manage later. Where Do You Fit In? The “every six months” rule is based on people who are middle-aged, don’t smoke or eat too many sweets, and who brush their teeth twice a day. At the end of six months, these people would have produced enough tartar that the skills of a dental hygienist are needed. However, there are some exceptions to the rule. For instance, some people might be fine going longer than six months in between cleanings, but this category is smaller than you’d think. Generally, these people are in their 20s and 30s and who are healthy, eat really well and floss daily. If you occasionally go to bed without brushing your teeth, floss irregularly or drink 50 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

soda or sugary juices almost every day, this is not your category. On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who need to have “deep cleanings” every three months (or more) because they have periodontal disease. With periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces (aka pockets) that become infected and spread below the gum line. A hygienist is needed to monitor the pockets and the spread of the disease so deep cleanings are considered a treatment for active gum disease, versus a regular cleaning. It is also a safe bet to see your hygienist more often if you smoke, have a diet rich in sugary foods and drinks, have diabetes, are elderly, have dry mouth or heart problems, etc. What To Do Talk to your dentist and hygienist. They have the skills and training to diagnose

your current oral health and treat you to either maintain a healthy mouth or work toward a healthy mouth. Take some steps at home, too, and make sure you’re brushing and flossing regularly, eating a healthy diet and drinking a lot of water, and cutting back on drinking and smoking, if applicable. If you’re not sure if you have a healthy mouth because you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, take the first step and find a local dentist. The mouth is the gateway to the body and it’s proven that oral health might affect, or be affected by, or contribute to various diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more. So, if you have a dirty mouth, clean it up! Spodak Dental Group is a comprehensive dental practice providing all general and specialty services in one convenient facility. Can A Facial Damage Your Skin?

{

By Kristin Heather

Staying progressive in the skin care industry means trying everything. I have gone from a synthetic-product‐using‐chemical‐peeler to a firm believer that organic is the only way to heal skin.

All of the experience continues to reveal the connection between the skin and the body, and fuels my personal research and development of the best skin care techniques. Unfortunately, mainstream treatments include methods that create future customers; they generate long-term effects that should have you critically considering your next facial. Let’s look at some common techniques that damage the skin: Steaming is used to relax the skin and open the pores so that professional cleaning is easier and painless. Although steaming is amazing for detoxification, using it in a facial before extractions is risky: • Because post-steamed skin is so willing to release, oils integral in the skin’s protection are removed along with unwanted congestion. • Steaming breaks down the acid mantle (sits on the outer layer of the skin). Destroying the skin’s protection should never be a result of a facial treatment as it creates vulnerability to external irritants, damage, and wrinkles. • Steaming leaves water residue on the skin. Water hinders the natural flow of the skin, while oils support it. Using water, other than to cleanse briefly, is completely unnecessary in any facial. Squeezing is widely used in professional skin care. Extractions are a great addition to any facial; the correct way to extract is to examine the congestion and remove it without causing any damage. Many technicians, however, find it completely acceptable to squeeze blemishes and congestion with fingers and cotton swabs: • When squeezing the skin, unnecessary pressure is applied to delicate capillaries, risking breakage. • Ever break out after a facial? Since squeezing is 52 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

insufficient in removing congestion, it often pushes bacteria deeper causing the breakout to spread around the once- concentrated area. Microdermabrasion, scrubs, naturallyoccurring acids, and chemical peels are used throughout the skin care world as a way to exfoliate unwanted congestion (in all forms) that sit on the outer layer of the skin: • The epidermis (outer layer) is about as thin as a sheet of paper. When you scrub or use a high-pressure system to force a granule or crystal onto the skin (microdermabrasion), this sheet is thinning out and most likely completely disappearing, leaving skin void of protection from sun and pollution. • Often these treatments begin to damage the second layer of the skin (the dermis). The dermal tissue looks better and more youthful, yet it has absolutely no defense and trauma to this layer can lead to chronic inflammation. • The more often exfoliating treatments are

used, the dirtier the pores become. The pores reaction to these types of low-grade trauma is to produce a sticky oil fast to try and protect itself, and that oil congests more easily. Chemical-based products are used throughout the professional and at-home skin care world: • The skin is alive. Chemicals are dead. Chemicals simply hinder the skin to do what it needs to be healthy. • The smallest part of the face is the cell, vibrating and energetic, and anything that disrupts the flow of energy and life force should not be used. Each of these treatments unintentionally cause heightened skin sensitivity. In a place like Florida, where the sun is strong and the atmosphere susceptible to mold, it’s crucial to have a strong defense. Without a defense, any skin issue will come back even worse. You will be a skin care customer for life. Mainstream techniques do not address the root cause skin problems. Wrinkles, brown spots, acne, and congestion will simply show up again and again: if not on the skin, somewhere else in the body. The focus of skin care should be to make the skin strong and to support the life force vibration of the skin. It is aliveness and energy that makes the skin look youthful and beautiful. Her current skin care methods combine cutting edge technology, emotional detoxification, and organic, signature treatments. What’s Your Workout Style?

{

By Alex Hurwitz

When it comes to working out, comfort is key; having proper gear, useful gadgets and looking good, well that just makes it more fun. There’s lots of fitness gear out there to choose from. Here are a few of my favs and some new items you might want try.

These days there are plenty of refillable water bottles out there. You can find ones with removable bottoms for thorough cleaning, ones made from double-walled glass to keep your ice water icy and ones with their very own built-in purifiers. Whatever your preference, be sure to get yourself a refillable water bottle ASAP! We all know hydration is important, even more crucial when you’re working out. Aim for half your bodyweight in ounces daily. That means someone weighing in at 150lbs should consume at least 75 ounces of water a day. Workout clothing – where to begin? Retailers are embracing the Athleisure trend. Sporting yoga wear around town running errands, etc is perfectly acceptable and the retailers are cashing in on your comfort (finally!). Whatever you wear make sure you have the right amount of compression for muscle and joint support, but still comfortable. Moisture wicking, breathable material is key – toss the 100% cotton Ts! Among the usual brands of Nike, Lululemon and Under Armour, you might try Skins Compression Wear, claiming a faster recovery from your workout. Whatever you choose, experiment with different colors, prints & styles and have some fun. I guarantee you will have a better workout if you actually like the way you look at the gym!

ing gloves, protect your hands, get a better grip and look like a pro at the same time! With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your health and fitness goals in style!

Next, there are lots of gadgets for tracking and monitoring. My personal favorite is the MyZone heart rate monitoring system. It transmits calories burned, target heart rate zones and energy expenditure in real time to a live display and uploads the data to your personal profile, allowing you to monitor and reach your fitness goals more clearly. Not to mention I also get an email direct to my inbox after each workout so I can see my stats. Looking for a little bling? FitBit Tracker is coming out with the Tory Burch Tracker line this spring. Her trackers come in silver, gold and rose gold.

STAY ON TRACK: Struggling to keep those New Year’s Resolutions? Here are a few mindsets to change now to keep you moving forward: • Lose the All Or Nothing Mindset. No one’s perfect, give yourself a break. Stick to your goal at least 80% of the time and you will succeed. Trust me, it will get easier. • Do you think you’re On A Diet? Diets end, this is a lifestyle change for you, never ending, just evolving. • Are you Keeping Your Goals A Secret? Are you afraid of falling off the proverbial horse? No one wants to fail publicly. Verbalizing your goals though helps to make you accountable to yourself. Try it. • Have you Forgotten The Benefits Of Your Life Change? Well here are a few words of encouragement for you: More energy, better nights sleep, better balance, better skin, healthier relationships, strong immune system, ability to change your life. Enough said? Keep it up, you can do it! Alex Hurwtiz is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and can be reached at 561-274-7477 or info@mintfit.com

Girl On The Move

Elizabeth Pipko

By Lisa Marie Photos by Cari Paige, Studio Bérengère

Elizabeth Pipko is a working model, professional athlete and published writer. She hopes her story will motivate people to reach for the stars and follow their dreams. We sat down with Elizabeth to talk about what inspires her.

Elizabeth, it’s so nice to meet you! I’m really excited for our readers to get to know you! Tell me about this photographer who discovered you. It’s so nice to meet you too! This is my favorite story to tell, because nobody ever believes it! I was sixteen at the time. My mom was walking our dog in Central Park when she saw a photographer shooting a fashion editorial. My mother approached her and said, “I love the way you handle your crew with such humor and professionalism”. The photographer thanked her and noticed “Tiny Tim”, our dog. She asked if she could use our dog in her outdoor shoot. In return my mom asked if the photographer would do a shoot with me. The photographer, whose name is Cari Paige, agreed. She spent about a day showing me how to pose, find the light and other important aspects of modeling, since I was green. We did a few shoots after that. She noticed something in me and six months later she got me signed with a top agency and inspired me to be everything I am today. That’s incredible! Are you saying she helped with more than just the modeling? Yes, absolutely! When I had met her, I was an awkward sixteen year old who was writing sad poetry about a boy who didn’t like me and I was being bullied at school. Cari convinced me that my writing was good and should be shared with the world. Once in the park, she convinced me to stand up and start reading my poems out loud to work on my confidence. It worked. She brought me out of my shell and inspired me to become my own person and follow my dreams. Eventually I wrote a book of my poetry called “Sweet Sixteen” which deals with everything that was going on in my heart at the time. I’m now working on the second book, I take classes at Harvard and I’m a competitive figure skater. In winter I practice at home in Florida and in New York City in summer. 58 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

life you are always going to meet up with those who aren’t the nicest people and they may present challenges. Everyone needs to understand that will happen to them in life. The important thing is how you respond to it. I can only feel sorry for anyone that goes out of their way to hurt someone else.

That’s a lot! I can’t imagine how you make time for all that. Tell us more… Yes it takes a lot of my time but I’ve been skating for about ten years now and it’s the one thing I cannot live without. I’ve had a lot of injuries and setbacks but it’s made me tough and work harder to reach my goal of competing in the Olympics. Good luck with that! You said you were bullied in school, how did that affect you? It was tough! Often in middle school I ate lunch in the bathroom and I cried myself to sleep for a long time. It was only when I started modeling that I learned that people will bully you for all sorts of reasons and the only way to deal with it is to ignore it, there is no real way around it. I actually have a funny story! This is kind of what really helped me grow and stop listening to the bullies around me. When I was younger I would always look forward to Wednesday nights because they aired my favorite show “America’s Next Top Model”. I remember one show there was a male model shooting with all of the contestants called CJ Richards. I remember thinking how cool he was. Fast forward a few years and I’m on a bus headed to a modeling job when I learn CJ Richards will be working with me that day. During the bus ride I thought about how silly I was to allow bullies to negatively impact me in school. In that moment I realized how ironic and amazing life can be. That’s such an inspirational story! So no more bullying I hope? The school bullying has stopped. But in

On a more positive note, you’ve recently been compared to Emily Ratajkowski and I’ve heard people saying you may be the new ‘it’ girl. Is Emily an inspiration? Being compared to Emily was such an honor. I have yet to meet her and tell her how amazing and talented I think she is and what an inspiration she has been. Her name with mine in a sentence makes me smile. I’m affected by other people too. My parents inspire me to work hard every day as well as my brother who’s my best friend. Meeting Cari clearly changed my world, and she continues to motivate me every day with her creativity and uniqueness. There are many amazing athletes and other artists I turn to for inspiration as well. Watching the great Olympic moments really keeps me going. I’ve been blessed to meet some truly amazing people. So tell me, from your experiences what’s the best advice you can give to someone reading this right now? Be yourself and never ever give up. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s too late or too early or unrealistic. Get up and fight for your dream every day and even more importantly, be yourself. It’s the most wonderful thing in the world to embrace who you are and everything you stand for. These are the things nobody can ever take away from you and what make you truly beautiful!

There’s a lot of smiling going on at the Delray Dental office in Delray Beach.

The Bosses, no hair lots of teeth

But it’s not the new Trader Joe’s or the colorful shopping center nearby. It is a combination of happy patients and a staff that enjoys their work and sees the fruit of their labor. “I love my job,” said Luz Tamayo, “everyday is different and I like helping people look their best,” said the highly proficient dental assistant who rises to every challenge put in front of her. CJ, who has been with Delray Dental for eight years, also finds her work a source of pleasure. “I love seeing people happy with their beautiful smiles after work is done here. We meet the most interesting people and I love my work,” said the receptionist and assistant who makes appointments, helps file insurance claims and helps the dentists. If CJ’s smile is any indication of the work done at Delray Den62 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

tal you’re in good hands. Just ask Gary Rizzo. The kitchen and bath designer has been coming to Delray Dental for the past year and a half and couldn’t be happier. He comes for regular cleanings, has had crowns put in and bonding done on his teeth. And, how many times do you see someone leaving the dentist office with a smile on their face? “People notice the difference in my smile. My teeth are white and I really like both Dr. John and Dr. Ted. They have a great bedside manner and are kind and warm – and that helps when you’re going to the dentist,” said Rizzo. If you talk to Shirley Westby she will tell you that Delray Dental is a family affair. Her mom Eileen started coming 30 years ago and then

she followed. “I have cleanings here, root canals, caps and crowns. I like both dentists; they are gently, thorough and pleasant. My cap came loose on a trip once and they put it back. The doctor said it would last a week or a month but it has lasted 30 years,” said the Tropic Harbor resident whose husband James is also a patient. That’s another perk for patients of Delray Dental – they will take care of you in any emergency situation. “We excel at immediate relief of pain and if there’s an emergency we get you in the office as soon as possible. We had a patient whose veneer popped off and within 35 minutes we corrected her dental problem,” said Dr. John. Dr. John and Dr. Ted are known as the Ritota brothers. Their father Dr. John P. Ritota was a dentist for 57 years in New Jersey and their uncle Michael was a cardiologist for 63 years. The last piece to the familial pie is their mother Dolores who helped out in her husband’s dental practice in New Jersey and who now works at Delray Dental a few days a week. phone. It is also Delores who adds a quintessential maternal presence to the Delray office. There are some things that are static however. “Our office has been in the same place for 35 years and we use the latest dental materials and treatments. We use Zirconia ceramic crowns because they last longer, fit well and have a translucent color that blends well with the other teeth,” said Dr. Ted. They also have a new whitening product called Phillips Zoom QuickPro whitening two-layer technology. The whitening process only takes five minutes and makes a world of difference. Both doctors believe in the advantage of continuing education and both see a lot more patients asking for dental implants. “We are seeing so many people who want implants now because they have missing teeth or they want to replace teeth. We can remove a tooth and do a temporary dental implant in the same day.” Dr. John graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and is trained in all types of Dental Implant Systems. He received the Van Cliburn Award for extensive TMJ Dental Research and enjoys making his patients smile look perfect. Dr. Ted graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dentistry and has advanced training in most implant systems and has completed surgical residencies for the placement of implants. They are also keeping up with the times. On their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/delraydental you can enter to win a free dental cleaning and a $50 dinner coupon. Called the SELFIE SMILE CONTEST you must send in a selfie showing off your smile, add a creative fun caption and post it on their Facebook page. Winners are picked monthly. They also sell a terrific line of Nutraceutical supplements called Nussentials. The liquid vitamins and minerals help patient’s immune system and overall health (nussentials.com/drj). There’s also a skincare line. “Our patients are our top priority. We provide the most comprehensive dental care possible, focusing on implants, cosmetic and general dentistry. From teeth whitening, invisible braces and smile makeovers to implants and dental emergencies, we make our patients as comfortable as possible. thority, and private organizations will all be reaching out through their channels to help get a victory. The City will be receiving national press and it is a great opportunity to involve everyone in this effort. “It’s great to be nationally recognized for something the locals have known all along,” said Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein. “People that visit here tend to want to stay. There are a lot of reasons to be happy in Delray Beach.” The 2015 finalists for “America’s Happiest Seaside Towns” were chosen by Coastal Living editors by first reviewing destinations that have been listed in the past as Coastal Living Dream Towns, along with towns that are nominated by readers via social media. They then collected each town’s rank on the Gallup-

Healthways Well-Being Index, percentage of sunny days, air quality, healthiness of beaches, commute times, crime ratings, walkability, standard of living and financial well-being of the locals, geographic diversity, and Coastal Living editors’ assessment of each town’s “coastal vibe.” This is another title the entire city can be proud of, and what better reason to work together to achieve a goal than happiness. Spread the word on social media with #CLHappyTown and vote online at www. coastalliving.com/happytowns2015. Coastal Living will feature the No. 1 Happiest Seaside Town in the July/August issue of Coastal Living, on newsstands June 19, and on www.coastalliving.com.

Expanding Relief

The Conde Center For Chiropractic Neurology By diane feen

Dr. John Conde’s approach to healing is quite unique in the field of medicine. As one of the country’s few Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists his approach to healthcare utilizes advanced neurological rehabilitation protocols in combination with traditional physical medicine.

In a way Dr. Conde is somewhat of a medical sleuth. That is why his office is always filled, and The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology has doubled its space to 4,300-square-feet. Because of this expansion Dr. Travis Lamperski, a highly qualified Chiropractic Physician from Pennsylvania, has joined the practice. As a way to help patients regain optimal health Dr. Conde has made it his life’s work to understand the cause of medical problems so he can help each patient return to a state of health. “I take pride in doing comprehensive orthopedic and neurological exams as a thorough way to pinpoint the actual underlying cause of a patients problem,” said Dr. Conde, who graduated Summa Cum Laude and was 68 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Valedictorian of his class at Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas. Some of the state-of-the-art equipment utilized at The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology includes Class IV high power laser therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, and whole body vibration therapy to alleviate back pain and help those suffering with spinal stenosis. “These modalities accelerate tissue healing and are restorative for rehabilitating injured discs and muscle tissue”. Dr. Conde’s approach to healing patients is non-surgical, non-invasive, and non-pharmaceutical. This delights those with neurological and orthopedic conditions such as sciatica, disc herniations, stenosis, neck pain, shoulder

pain, headaches, chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, MS and other conditions. What gives Dr. Conde such a unique perspective treating patients is not only his chiropractic expertise but the fact that he completed three years of post-doctorate training in neurology. He also has sub-specialty training in vestibular (dizzy) disorders and traumatic brain injuries, which he says are more common than one would think. “We see people with traumatic brain injuries caused by motorcycle accidents, football injuries, equestrian accidents, car accidents and other situations. But we have to determine what is wrong with the patient so we can individualize proper treatment.” One of the cutting-edge diagnostic tools

The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology uses to diagnose and treat brain injuries, stoke victims, Parkinson’s disease, MS, dizziness and balance issues is the Dynavision D2. “This is only used at top rehabilitation hospitals and collegiate programs (such as the University of Cincinnati) to diagnose, treat, and optimize the nervous system. This modality works on visuo-motor-spatial skills and targets the frontal lobe and cerebellum brain regions. It helps with coordination, strength, mental clarity, balance, focus and short term memory.” Another new brain rehabilitation tool The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology utilizes is called the Interactive Metronome. This therapy requires the user to keep up with a computer generated beat that is delivered in a visual and auditory manner. It improves timing in the brain in an organized, systemic, flexible and exciting format. “When the brain’s functional networks are synchronized, the neurons are able to fire efficiently and rhythmically improving executive functions such as problem solving, planning, short term memory, coordination, and balance.” It is for that reason that Dr. Conde constantly searches the globe for the latest diagnostic tools to help treat patient’s medical conditions. One of these is called RealEyes. These computer generated goggles have a video camera and software that allows the doctor to look at a patient’s oculomotor function (eye movements). “Eye movement dysfunction is directly correlated with brain function. We can determine what’s wrong with a patient who has migraines, brain injuries, strokes, etc. and determine where the problem is. Then we can set up a treatment plan predicated on those results.”

Dr. Conde and Dr. Lamperski reviewing a patient’s eye movement physiology utilizing the new RealEyes technology

What Dr. Conde wants people to know is that Chiropractic Neurology combines traditional chiropractic care (which focuses on manual therapy) with cutting-edge neurological procedures. It also incorporates aspects of functional medicine, which looks at a patient holistically allowing their health status to be put on a continuum, rather than a black and white scale of health or disease. Robert is one example. The 52-year-old came to The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology with severe lower back pain that radiated down his right side. After treatment with non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, cross-cord inhibiting exercises (neurological technique), therapeutic strengthening, whole body vibration therapy, and brainbased exercises Robert is now pain free. “There exists an intense relationship between the brain and the musculoskeletal system - such that subtle changes in the nervous

system can affect things such as muscle tone, joint alignment in the spine and the extremities, flexibility, balance and coordination. This dysfunction can lead to chronic pain (fibromyalgia), vertigo, headaches, back-neck pain, sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome (just to name a few). The nervous system can change according to the environment it is exposed to; therefore we can stimulate areas of nervous system to promote healing” The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology also offers therapeutic massage provided by three world class therapists. They specialize in Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and reflexology. “One advantage to getting therapeutic massage at a medical office is that the doctor can guide the therapist to which body systems to focus on, the intensity of pressure and the type of massage to be applied.” Dr. Conde believes in the power of education. That is why his chiropractic assistants are certified in multiple areas. “I take great pride that my staff is as knowledgeable as possible. They are laser certified, interactive metronome certified and certified chiropractic assistants. Our goal here is to give the most advanced therapies possible that are evidenced based and proven.” Aside from education Dr. Conde has other lofty goals. “My mission is to make a permanent change in a person’s life and in their health. Our main objective is to insure the health and well being of the patients. As I always say, ‘Experience the Chiropractic Neurology Difference.’” The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology 401 W. Offering Security, Safety And Peace Of Mind By Diane Feen

Qualities such as honesty, integrity and competence are talked about a lot these days. We admire people who have them yet yearn to meet more who fit within this ethical parameter.

John Campanola is someone who does. He has a Master’s in Business Administration from NYU and has worked for some of the most prestigious Fortune 500 companies in existence (General Electric, Verizon and New York Life). He is also very active in the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce and was named their Ambassador of the Year for 2013 -2014. Campanola is a graduate of Leadership Delray and the winner of the 2013-2014 Ken Ellingsworth Community Service Award. Campanola is also on the board of The Institute for Regional Conservation, a non-profit that works to maintain and restore Florida’s natural habitat. In simple terms, Campanola is a good all around guy. He will be honest regarding your options and will educate you about insurance, business, finances, long term care and saving for your child’s college education. That’s the way it is with this licensed Insurance Agent with New York Life. He may wear a lot of hats – for the community and his clients – but his aim is clearly to serve as a safety net or

income generator. At General Electric he was a Global Product Manager and at Verizon he was Director of Strategic Business Planning. And now at New York Life he serves clients in a variety of capacities. “I work to provide financial security and peace of mind for my clients. Each person and each business is unique, with different resources and needs, and I am committed to providing them with life insurance and financial products that meet their specific requirements,” said Campanola, who is a member of New York Life’s Annuity Elite Program. While everyone in South Florida has something to sell – many specialize in one specific niche. Campanola, on the other hand, looks at your total financial needs. He keeps up with current insurance and financial products and looks at your total financial and insurance

requirements so he can develop a personal financial needs analysis specifically for you. And unlike some people, profit is not his motivating factor. “I was raised to honor my commitments no matter what they are and to be honest and ethical. My standard operating procedure is never to look at how much I will make from a particular opportunity. My primary motivation is to help my clients.” One person who knows this first hand is local Delray realtor Jessica Rosato. “As you navigate your financial and life insurance options you want someone who is honest, informative, experienced and caring. John is that and so much more. When a new product is available (or a deadline approaches) I know about it immediately. He is thorough, keeps up with everything so I don’t have to, and he explains everything in terms I understand,” said the

Luxury Residential Specialist for Nestler Poletto Sotheby’s International Realty. If you’re facing retirement, security and safety are probably your key goals. Campanola knows this very well. “We offer several products that guarantee income (and investments with riders) so you don’t have to worry about losing your principal. People are living longer and often don’t have pension plans. It is important to plan for retirement so you don’t have to work part-time (when you retire) to make ends meet.” According to Campanola there are several options such as taking your 401K or IRA and turning it into guaranteed future income that works like a pension plan.

Anne and John are discussing New York Life’s newest life insurance offering

If you have a child and are saving for his (or her) college education you might want to talk to Campanola about Custom Whole Life Insurance. “You may access the cash value of the policy tax free and if you should die (or get disabled) the child can still get the money for college. In addition it does not impact your child’s chances to qualify for financial aid. Another hot button issue today is Long Term Care Insurance. We know the average lifespan has increased, but the question remains, ‘How can we afford to live to be 100? And who can we trust?’ “New York Life was founded in 1845 and is one of the oldest and largest insurance companies. I only work for companies with ethical standards that are good for clients,” said Campanola, whose mother, Mary Campanola, still works full time at the age of 85. When it comes to Long Term Care Insurance Campanola has a variety of options to offer. You may select traditional long term care insurance, the hybrid offering called the Asset Preserver or a Chronic Care Rider on certain life insurance policies. “I help people fit all of their life insurance, long term care and financial services needs together. I also provide clients with a free financial needs analysis and try to find a solution that is tailored made for each client’s needs.” Rosato says it best: “John Campanola is top notch and I am proud to be one of his clients. He treats you like you are his only client and gives you his commitment to excellence.” John Campanola Agent, New York Life Insurance 401 West Atlantic Ave, Suite 09 Delray Beach, FL 33444 561-212-2903 jmcampanola@ft.newyorklife.com www.newyorklife.com/agent/jmcampanola

The Standard Of Excellence

PETERSON’S FLOWER MARKET

{

By Diane feen Photos by melissa korman

If you ask Barbara Peterson what it’s like to sell flowers she’ll tell you it’s a joyful experience. “Being in the flower business takes hold of your whole being. It’s nice to see happiness in people’s faces and hear about their lives. People tell me they’ve been coming here for years.”

You bet they have. The company, at 60 years old, is one of the oldest flower businesses in South Florida. It was founded in 1954 by Sven Arthur Peterson. His son Paul expanded it even more by purchasing 40 acres of land in Delray Beach to grow flowers and add greenhouses. The company continues to flourish with Barbara and her family at the helm. Sven’s four grandson’s Paul, Eric, James and Michael now run the company with roots that go back further than many of the stop signs in town. Joy Banton is very glad of that fact. The social director of the Delray Beach Club comes to Peterson’s every week for flowers. Just recently she stopped by to pick up white hydrangeas and baby’s breath to brighten up her table for a dinner party. “I buy all my flowers at Peterson’s because they have the best flowers. I am

using square glass vases that don’t come up high so people can talk across the table with one another.” Although Banton knew exactly what she wanted when she walked through the door, others leave the task of coordination and color to Michael. Just recently a customer dropped by for a large bouquet of flowers for a friend’s anniversary. Although he knew he wanted to spend $50, he left the creative part up to Peterson’s. Michael immediately began putting different types of flowers on the work table and in a short time created a floral masterpiece. You can see that creating bouquets of flow-

ers is second nature to this Florida native whose handiwork is a combination of passion and heritage. According to Michael, Peterson’s Flower Market carries about 35 different types of flowers each week. “Almost every flower is available all year round here. We were also voted the best place to buy flowers in all of Palm Beach County.” On holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas it’s the most happening place in town. You get an endless choice of vases, teddy bears and chocolates with letters of love. Of course they all

come with a selection of flowers that range from hydrangeas, lilies, Gerbera Daisies, roses, Fuji mums, Heliconia, daisy’s and any flower you can imagine (and some you can’t). That’s why Judy Levine stopped by on a dreary cold day to brighten up her home with white daisies. “I am buying these flowers for myself, I love the flowers here; they’re the best.” So does Susan Golden. “I just received two dozen colorful roses from Peterson’s as a gift and they are the most beautiful flowers I have ever received. The rose buds opened fully (unlike others I’ve had) and the colors are simply brilliant.” Another part of the Peterson’s lore is that you can buy the freshest flowers (or bouquets) around. “Many of our customers can’t get over how low are prices are. Sometimes they will say to me, ‘I wish we could bring you back up north with us,’” said Barbara, who advises customer’s to put Sprite or 7-Up in the flower vase to keep the water clean and eliminate germs. Peterson’s staff is friendly and will help with gift ideas that range from beautiful Orchids to green house plants. They also make flower arrangements or centerpieces for weddings, parties, funerals, holidays, corporate events or for your own delight. Some customers, like Delray resident Harvey, knew exactly what he wanted when he recently stopped at Peterson’s. The genial fellow picked up two dozen two-tone pink roses. When asked who he was buying them for, he replied, “I am buying a dozen roses for my female friend and a dozen for my wife. You can’t buy flowers for your girlfriend without buying them for your wife.” If you have an upcoming event call Peterson’s for a consultation to discuss your special needs and flower preferences. They can create flower arrangements for large (or small) parties or you can order centerpieces for a charity or corporate event. The staff at Peterson’s will create bouquets, flower arrangements and on-site decorating with your personal style and budget in mind. If you stop by the store Barbara, Michael and their staff will show you a selection of Mother Nature’s bounty. “It is our pleasure to assist you with any local or nationwide flower wire service deliveries. Corporate accounts are also welcome. We also offer daily floral deliveries to local funeral homes and hospitals. I am proud to be the 4th generation of Peterson’s to carry on this flower legacy,” adds Michael. Once you enter through the doors, a sense of magic greets you along with a life size mermaid made of seashells.

Take a few more steps and you will be amazed by walls of one of a kind seashell keepsakes, luxury decorative chandeliers, beach signs, wind chimes, and a breathtaking Pink Lady swordfish. All of these under the sea gems can be uncovered at Beachcomber Art in the heart of Delray Beach. From home decor and lighting to unique jewelry and coral creations, Beachcomber Art offers everything to decorate your home or for a special occasion. Beachcomber Art has a large selection of coral encrusted items from a luxurious chandelier to an antique door with a mirror or even a wedding box or bouquet of seashells. Debbie Brookes is the owner and talented artist of all these beach themed and elegant creations and includes all types of coral into her work, from blues to many types of whites, along with sea glass and recycled products.

Edward and Debbie have been together for 40 years and Debbie said she couldn’t run her studio without him, from his moral support to the man who hangs her chandlers and mirrors he is her right hand man

Debbie recently opened the boutique store in Delray Beach and it is a perfect fit for the beach town--- which also is home to many artists and art aficionados. “Beachcomber Art is so close to the beach and people decorate beachy here,” said the owner. From custom dressers and mirrors to large seashell encrusted fish or a planter, Debbie is happy to work with any customer to make a one of a kind item. She hand crafts a large variety of chandeliers and lamps; they can be made to match any decor, using coral, seashells, oyster shells or sea glass. You can find special mermaid sterling jewelry or a red or pink coral necklace. Debbie can also make a piece to match your outfit. The store also carries sterling silver

jewelry from renowned artists such as Chris Bales. Some of the exquisite pieces can only be found at Beachcomber Art, such as the Hawaiian Sunrise Shell and the Larimar Blue Stone. Debbie uses nature’s timeless elements to create art that reaffirms beauty and individuality. Debbie specializes in one of a kind sea shell creations, jewelry, glass and tile work and acrylic painting all of her own designs. She can even customize any item with her creative touch and seashells. Debbie also goes to her customer’s homes and designs and creates unique chandeliers or artistic pieces to complement their decor. She will work hand-in-hand with your decorator to create just the right item for your home.

The artist even customizes pieces and has some interesting requests--- from pianos and guitars and anything for a wedding to an injured customer’s cast to cremation boxes. The store has a section for tropical souvenirs including wind chimes, treasure boxes of shells, and beach signs stating, ‘Paradise Found’ and ‘Delray Beach Just Another Day In Paradise.’ There is truly something for every taste and occasion. That’s the goal of Debbie and Edward, her husband of 40 years, who helps her greet customers and hang items in the store. “People are on vacation here and they are always happy. When they find something they like, it is very rewarding and they are so appreciative,” said Debbie. Customers are in awe when they discover that Debbie has made all of the items herself. While always being an artist in some form from a hairstylist, a florist to a mosaic artist, Debbie stumbled upon creating these sea shell masterpieces.

“I started picking up shells when they dredged Palm Beach, and I used them to make a water garden, then a pool bath at my home. I also started making boxes and flower pots full of seashells. My friends wanted me to make boxes for them. I started making them on the dining room table, then rented a small office and converted it into an art studio. I got so busy with the seashell work that I moved into an office in Boynton Beach. I had two different studios in Boynton Beach for 6 1/2 years, then I moved to Delray Beach,” said Debbie. From the first day she started creating her seashells treasure boxes for friends to today, Debbie feels blessed to be doing something she loves every day. “When I open the door at Beachcomber Art every morning, I thank God, the angels, my husband Ed and my customers. I’ve had tourists come in and find a special item to bring home that reminds them of their trip to Delray Beach. Brides have shopped here and found a missing item that’s perfect for

their wedding day. It’s rewarding to make someone’s day special,” said Debbie. “I think what’s unique about us is there’s nothing like it. It’s beach themed and so much of what Debbie does can fit in with other decor as well. The beach theme is South Florida and the art translates into other decor. There’s nothing like it. Other stores have touristy items but no alternatives. The Delray Beach customer really appreciates that creativity. It’s the reason we have been so successful. It’s a working studio and that adds to the uniqueness,” said Edward. “Beachcomber Art is a crossover between the art district and the higher end boutique.” Come see for yourself! Find that beautifully created beach art and a stunning piece of jewelry at Beachcomber Art and meet the artist! Beachcomber Art 900 East Atlantic Avenue #13 Delray Beach, FL 33483 561-315-5717

Is Your Garage Door Sick?

Call Garage Md At 561-Fix-door By Diane Feen Photos by Melissa Korman

{

John Myers and partner Doug Richardson know a lot about opening things and closing them.

Myers, a South Florida native, has been a developer, a Palm tree farm owner and has entrepreneurial roots that sink beneath the ground water. Richardson was a mechanic and built engines for Porsche. That’s why both men teamed up to create GarageMD two years ago. In case you’re wondering, GarageMD does not do CAT scans or MRI’s but they do repair everything related to your garage doors. On top of that they offer free inspections, are on call every day all day at no extra charge, and have prices established in advance for all services (listed on their website garagemd.com). Bet your primary care physician can’t offer those terms. What Garage MD does do is offer tuneups on your garage doors – which includes lubricating the entire door and making sure they are balanced by adjusting the springs. They also adjust the garage door opener, which is imperative to long term performance. They can also make your garage door opener iPhone compatible. “We can convert your existing opener using the LiftMaster Gateway. This allows you to open and close your garage door which a touch of a button on your smart phone,” said Myers. GarageMD also quiets garage doors with sealed nylon rollers. According to Richardson the old metal wheels that make a lot of noise under the pressure of your heavy garage doors (that weight 300 to 400 pounds) are now obsolete. The new rollers are much smoother and can prevent damage to your door opener. According to experts it is imperative to keep your garage in good condition to prevent injuries. That means making sure the 78 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

springs, tracks, cables, rollers and door opener are well functioning in your garage door system. “Having your garage door lubed and the springs adjusted is important. “You can tell if your springs need attention by performing a simple two-minute test. To see the proper way to test your door, go to garagemd.com.” Another good reason to call GarageMD is that they are not only well trained but their prices are lower than large garage door repair companies. There are no hidden fees, no service call fees, and their springs are the highest quality made in the USA. Just ask Myers, who is proud of the fact

that GarageMD is a local company with low overhead and high ambitions. “Some service companies take advantage of situations when there is an emergency. We are owners and operators and stand by our work and our work ethic. We tell the truth and are honest, fair, nice guys.” Honesty does have it perks. Just ask any of their clients. “John and Doug are a class act. They showed up on time and were very friendly and helpful. They replaced my rollers and made my door sound better than when it was new. It only took about 20 minutes. The best part is I don’t think anyone can beat their prices,” said John Hobbs.

Doug and John diagnosing and repairing garage door problem.

One thing you should know about your garage door is that the bottom brackets (that are connected to the garage door springs) are always under a lot of tension and should be regularly inspected.

The cables are also important. Worn out cables can break and cause your garage door to fall down unexpectedly. Myers suggests that homeowners using extension garage door springs should make sure there is

a safety cable to keep the extension spring secure (and act as a failsafe if it breaks). The springs should also be regularly inspected, adjusted and replaced after extended use. If you didn’t realize all that needs to be done to keep your doors in tip top shape call GarageMD and have your door checked. It’s a free service they offer. That’s what George Segenreich did. “Doug and John diagnosed a problem with my garage door that had an improper spring installation when the house was built. I had three springs break in six years. They did a great job and as realtors in the area, we’ll be recommending Garage MD without hesitation to our customers and friends.” That’s music to Myers and Richardson’s ears. “We offer the best garage door repair service in all of Palm Beach County. Your satisfaction is the reason our customer service is so legendary. We guarantee our work and our technicians are always here to assist you!” GARAGEMD 561-FIXDOOR (561-349-3667) Garagemd.com

ONE AVEDA SALON Restorative, Calming And Beautifying By Diane Feen

photos by melissa korman

The name Aveda is synonymous with good stewardship of the planet. Their line of products, approach to beauty and their salons reflect this conscious collection of thoughts and actions.

That is why this is an auspicious time to visit One Aveda Salon. As part of the Aveda family they are not only celebrating their own design renewal but Earth Day as well. “We just had a huge renovation in our salon. We opened up the front area, added a quiet zone in back and changed the wall color to serene shades of green,” said Sue Anger, who has owned One Aveda for the past four years. 82 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

In those four years the salon has thrived and doubled its client base. Not only has the area just received a retail face-lift but the stylists and hair colorists at One Aveda Salon have upped their game for clients. “My visits to One Aveda are always enjoyable. The staff is professional and makes everyone feel comfortable and special. The owner is a jewel and their products are the best. They also give back to the earth and the communi-

ty! I have been extremely happy since my first visit in 2008,” said Lynne H. There are plenty of people who rave about their One Aveda Salon experience. Morgan came in recently with a backward bob that she had to hide by pulling it back. Since she went to One Aveda it’s all changed. “Tommy realized what was wrong with my hair; fixed and improved it and everyone has told me that my hair looks great now. I’ve been able to wear it

down again instead of hiding it- it looks great all the time now.” There are currently 10 chairs and nine stylists at One Aveda, the most ever according to Anger. They are also heralding one of the most monumental times of the year – Earth Day. In the Aveda world this day is paramount. It involves a global commitment to the Earth and all its inhabitants. The Florida Aveda shops donate money to the Everglades Foundation and in March, One Aveda Salon will sell items with part of the proceeds going to this non-profit. “We are raffling off a gift basket at the end of March with all Aveda products if you make a donation. We are also selling Light the Way™ 2015 Earth Month Candles made of soy wax. The glass is made from 100 percent reclaimed beverage bottles and some of the proceeds will go to help the village of Manakara, Madagascar,” adds Anger. According to Aveda they are striving to reach their goal of $6.5 million in fundraising efforts to support clean water projects around the world. Not only does Aveda want to clean up the planet, they also want to make sure

that clients see a more beautiful self. One of their newest products is a “Smooth Infusion Smoothing Masque” for the hair. This deep conditioning treatment softens hair and reduces frizz. Using organic cupuacu and shea butter it creates a barrier around hair to keep moisture in and lock out adverse environmental conditions. They also have new skincare products. The “Botanical Kinetics Energizing Eye Crème” helps reduce puffiness in the skin around the eyes. Licorice root - known for its soothing properties - helps diminish the appearance of dark circles as well. Their “Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Rich Skin Crème” is great for dry skin because it increases moisture instantly and retains it for 24 hours. It has vital plant energy that stimulates hydration to increase your skins natural moisture. The new Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Soft Crème is for all skin types and is made with cupuaçu butter and Salicornia herbacea. For the body they have new products with rich nourishing oils. Called the “Beautifying Cleansing Body Oil” this product gently cleanses the skin with or-

ganic olive and safflower oils. It also has aromas of organic rosemary, lavender and bergamot. Their “Beautifying Body Moisturizer” nourishes skin with certified organic shea butter, olive and safflower oils, organic rosemary, lavender and bergamot. One Aveda Salon adheres to the company’s philosophy of helping clients look their best in a tranquil organic environment. Sue’s daughter Ariel is always up front to make sure your journey is a smooth one, and their staff of hair colorists and stylists are tops in their field. Come to One Aveda Salon and be part of a beauty culture that is nurturing and beautifying. “We cherish the serenity that everyone feels here. People know we care about them and want them to look their best. Our staff is happy and so are our guests. Come for a make-over and see what everyone is talking about,” said Anger. New Ownership Lifts Quality of Service and Repairs at

AutoWorks By Nicol Jenkins

AutoWorks family owners, Andrew Engel (center), flanked by parents, Styliani and Karl Engel, and Buddy

{

For over 30 years, AutoWorks in Delray Beach has maintained its reputation as a trusted auto repair shop in the community. Now under new ownership, AutoWorks Delray Beach has heightened customer service and added top of the line equipment to enhance your total car care experience. As the new owner, Andrew Engel recognizes that customer relationships are critical to establishing a sound and robust business- and has kept that personal touch as the focus of the shop. He is one of the youngest owners and operators of a business in Palm Beach County. After several positions at auto repair and body shops and after his 28th birthday, Andrew decided that he could be more productive if he worked for himself. After 3 months of researching various opportunities, he purchased an existing auto repair shop at 1501 SW 10th Street in Delray Beach and launched AutoWorks, now operating the shop with his entrepreneurial parents, Karl and Styliani. Despite his young age, Andrew has many years of experience working on vehicles of all makes and models. His interest in cars started when he was just a boy and turned into his occupation 2 years ago after completing the 18-month course in automotive technology at Lincoln College. After finishing the course, he worked at two local auto shops and shortly thereafter decided to go off on his own. “Ever since I can remember I’ve loved everything about cars. When I was 18, I started working on cars and never stopped,” said Andrew. Like the AutoWorks name, Andrew has established a strong reputation for honesty and high-quality work. Everything from a simple oil

change and brake pads or tires to rebuilding an entire engine, Andrew and his certified master technician Luis can help you get back on the road. They focus on American and Asian vehicle repairs along with high end European vehicles. The local shop has a personal touch that can’t be found at the larger chain shops, fair and reasonable prices, along with an impeccable waiting room with wireless Internet. They even offer a free shuttle service to your office or home. Another unique feature is an expansive 4,375 square feet facility complete with a tire mounting and balancing machine, seven bays and six lifts. Two of those lifts are specifically designed to handle heavy-duty pick-up trucks, vans and light diesels. Each can carry a load of 12,000 pounds, more than enough to handle any larger size vehicle. AutoWorks also services fleet accounts, which is any small business with three

or more vehicles. This entitles the customer to significant savings on the normal labor rate, as well as expedited service. Thirty-day credit terms can also be extended to fleet accounts who qualify. “Not too many technicians are capable of working on these trucks and not too many shops have the lifts that can handle the weight. Our master technician has many years of experience specifically working on pick-up trucks and vans. And we can work on anything from an F-150 up to a RAM 3500,” Andrew added. Even though the shop had been in business repairing cars and other vehicles in that location since 1983, the previous owner was moving on and a new management had to gain the trust of existing customers - almost starting from scratch. Andrew greets all of his customers with a big grin from ear-to-ear. He is able to

connect with new and existing customers, making them feel comfortable. Embarking on this new venture was less daunting after Andrew’s parents decided to come out of retirement and help set up operating procedures and fully automate the shop, including a Website and Facebook page, and working with a local SEO company to get on all the Internet directory sites. They also deal with vendors and suppliers, manage the business side of the shop, making sure that the daily operations run as smoothly as possible. This allows Andrew and his lead certified technician to focus solely on servicing and repairing vehicles. And it makes AutoWorks truly a family-owned and operated business. “That’s what we do best: we know how to fix cars, trucks, vans…and we love doing that,” Andrew says. “It’s a personal relationship business,” Andrew continues. “We have to start by establishing a relationship that is based on trust. We address our customer’s concerns about their vehicle. We will not repair anything on the car that is not broken. We will not repair anything on the car that is not approved by our customers. We will repair the vehicle quickly and we will do that in the most affordable way. We offer

a personal touch and we often drive our customers to and from their home while their car is being repaired.” “While we are doing all this, we are courteous, friendly, and professional,” Andrew said. “We treat customers with respect - the way we would want to be treated ourselves.” Their customers agree. AutoWorks and its staff have over 30 positive reviews on various sites. “This is a fine facility, outstanding in both diagnosis and service. Several problems were solved, efficiently and within a day. We need

more like AutoWorks and I won’t hesitate to recommend,” stated one customer. Another satisfied customer praised, “Andrew and his family were fantastic to deal with. The job I needed was done in a timely manner and I was treated well. I recommend AutoWorks to anyone.” AutoWorks 1501 SW 10th Street Delray Beach, FL 33444 561-272-7451 autoworksdelray.com

MusicWorks presents An Evening with JOHN SEBASTIAN, March 13th

Friday, 8 p.m. For more than four decades, this singer/songwriter’s contributions have become a permanent part of our American musical fabric. His group The Lovin’ Spoonful played a major role in the mid-’60s rock revolution. Sebastian 90 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

explains, “We were grateful to the Beatles for reminding us of our rock & roll roots, but we wanted to cut out the English middlemen, so to speak, and get down to making this new music as an ‘American’ band.” The Lovin’ Spoonful did just that, putting their first seven singles into the Top 10 (at the height of Beatlemania), which was unprecedented. They began with older material taken from blues, country, folk and jug band sources (now termed “roots music”) and made it sound modern. Then did the reverse through original songs composed and sung by Sebastian, creating thoroughly modern music that sounded like the history of American music.

Mark Sauer brims with energy and enthusiasm By linda brown

{

The instant you meet him, you get swept up in his vision and concern for kids. It’s contagious and that’s a good thing.

Sauer is the founder of an innovative relatively new non-profit called Delray Students First. The mission of Delray Students First is to identify, nurture, coach and help promising kids break the cycle of poverty through education. In its short life, Delray Students First has quickly earned a reputation for its commitment to local youth and its willingness to go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of students who show potential but often have difficult hurdles to overcome including family issues and crushing poverty. Sauer, a former president of the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Blues and top corporate executive, is an interesting combination of Type A and relaxed Delray Beacher. He lives downtown, wears comfortable clothes and seems relaxed, but he’s also very focused, extremely passionate and very driven. Mark Sauer, founder of Delray Students First, is making a profound difference in the lives of promising young people in his adopted hometown

92 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

His mission: to give Delray kids who need it a fighting chance at a good life. If that means answering calls in the middle of the night, taking someone to a doctor or driving up to the University of Central Florida to check in on a student he is mentoring so be it: whatever it takes to make things work. “I love every minute of it,” he says. “We find a way to make it work.” In its short existence, Delray Students First has made some interesting partnerships teaming with longstanding organizations such as the Achievement Centers for Children and Families and newcomers like Dare 2 Be Great to leverage resources, share information and help kids in need. A recent example of Sauer’s partnering style was a fundraising spin cycle event that he did in January with Purcycle, a new business located in Delray’s Pineapple Grove. The event raised several thousand dollars to pay for teachers and other resources that

local students need to get ready for college. Sauer is also a regular at Delray’s innovative Village Academy a pre-k through 12 school located in the city’s southwest section. He works with students at the school and consults with teachers and counselors to fill needs. Sauer is working on a deal to use classroom space at the Catherine Strong Center, also in the southwest neighborhood, to provide tutoring and other help, whatever it takes to give students a leg up. What also distinguishes Sauer’s approach is his ability to customize services in order to serve the particular needs of the young people they serve. While large programs often have specific strategies, Delray Students First, often tailors what it provides to meet individual needs. That’s the advantage of a small, nimble and entrepreneurial non-profit. But Sauer’s goal is to serve as many kids as possible, so leveraging the resources of other organizations is a must. Still, the organization has developed a good staff and board which also includes Dr. Rudy Collum, a veteran of The Village Academy and Faye Pelosi, whom Sauer calls the “heart and soul” of Delray Students First. Pelosi, a dedicated educator, is a major contributor to the organization spearheading many of the following services: • Afterschool homework support and tutoring • ACT/SAT college admission test tutoring and prep • Dual enrollment classes at Palm Beach State College • College tours • Outdoor activities and field trips • Mentoring • Swim lessons at Pompey Park • 4-H Club vegetable garden at Boys & Girls Club • 4-H Club classes, outings and college summer camp • Boys & Girls Club membership For more information or to get involved visit http://www.delraystudentsfirst.org

A Heart For Children And A Head For Normalcy:

JUSTIN ZIMMER By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

Justin Zimmer is living proof that you can move swiftly and repeatedly yet retain your core roots.

As a young boy growing up in Western Canada, Zimmer moved nine times before the age of 14. His varied panoramic childhood was in part due to his father’s career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “I made friends all over and as a military brat you get used to that life,” said Zimmer who now calls South Florida his home. Moving around seemed to be the order of the day for Zimmer and his sister Sunshine – but all that changed in 1987. “My parents went to the Dominican Republic with a Christian group and ended up moving there to start a non-profit organization that housed and fed homeless children.” This act of selflessness set the stage for young Zimmer’s life. He not only watched his parents help those in dire straits, but he was moved by their plights. So much so that his life has been dedicated to helping young people (and their families when necessary) move from despair to delight. That is the reason he was chosen last May to become the Director of the Naoma Donnelley Haggin Boys & Girls Club in Delray Beach. That means that Zimmer is the parental theme (and guide) for children who come after school for emotional, physical and educational support. And he couldn’t be happier about that fact. “The future solution to a child’s life is what we do here. We teach them the importance of integrity, responsibility, hard work and honesty. I don’t believe in entitlements, I believe that children should work for what they get.” When asked how he instills these weighty life lessons upon these young impressionable kids, he smiles and gives an example. “I always have children coming to my office asking for money for the candy

March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

machine. So I get them to help me do some work first. They organize supplies, do photocopying, help collect garbage around the building and afterwards they get money for candy.” This is Zimmer’s insightful way of teaching children about responsibility and commitment – words that ring through many of his conversations. “We are a nation of opportunity for all who make the effort to do so. That is what I teach the children at the Boys and Girls Club. Coming from a strict middle class background I have worked for everything I have received.” That work includes 25 years of working with youth mental health, the Department of Juvenile Justice, group homes and child protection. He has worked in the toughest neighborhoods in New Jersey, the Caribbean and reservations of the Seminole Tribe in Florida and Canada. “I have seen the worst abuse done to children and have helped many parents rebuild their lives to become better more responsible parents,” said Zimmer, who has an open door policy when it comes to the children and their parents. When the need arises he will direct a mother to safe house (offer resources) or support a child’s need for educational or emotional support on the spot. Since Zimmer started at The Boys & Girls Club in Delray Beach they have added new staff members, new computers, new sports equipment and a new paint job inside and out. They also provide free snacks and meals for the children and have a “Power Hour,” where they can get help with their homework. Also coming up is a new garden project outside the building. Opening on Earth Day (April 22) this new earthy project will teach the children how to

grow vegetables, plants and about earth sciences. The program is part of an effort by the City of Delray Beach, Lowes, the Boys & Girls Club and is a 4-H Project. Zimmer is also working with Police Chief Goldman to create resources in the community for an anti-drowning coalition. It has resulted in the boys and girls club children having free swimming lessons in Pompey Park. But that’s not all Zimmer has in his youth enhancing toolbox. “My desire is to train children to be responsible citizens and have respect for family, law enforcement and the community.” As a means to this goal Zimmer prides himself on being a positive role model and consistent authority figure to

help shape the children who pass through his door each day at the Boys & Girls Club. And if you ask Beau Delafield, Chairman of the Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Delray Beach, Zimmer is off to a running start. “Justin has done a tremendous job in helping to improve and shape the lives of the children that attend the club. He leads by example and emphasizes the importance of a strong work ethic, taking responsibility for your actions, education, respect and other core values that contribute to keeping our country great.” Zimmer is also a strong proponent on the importance of fatherhood. He is not only father to 12-year-old Luke and nine-year-old Joshua but he sees the road to success for

children as one guided by a strong father figure. “I strongly believe the core and root problem of current community issues is that most fathers are still kids themselves and take the role of fatherhood lightly. Being confident and responsible to your children is the best gift you can give to them and the community.” Another gift, according to Zimmer, is the board of directors that are so committed to helping the children of the Boys & Girls Club (and him) be a success. “My board truly understands the mission I have, which is to inspire and assist all young people (especially those who need us most) to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.” www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | March 2015

TIM FINNEGAN’S IRISH PUB

An Oasis of Friendliness And Fine Food By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

There are some places that transport you to another time and place. Not so much an escape from reality, but a soothing time-out from the norm. Tim Finnegan’s is that kind of a place.

The wood paneled walls, rich Irish authenticity, comfortable furniture and great food make this restaurant a place to cherish. And most who go there do. “I love to come here; I love the food and the atmosphere. My daughter was not feeling well so I came to get Jorge’s homemade mashed potatoes and vegetables. No one else makes food fresh like this. And, my daughter loved it,” said Denise, who meets her gal pals regularly at Tim Finnegan’s. Denise isn’t the only one who finds that Tim Finnegan’s hits a hot spot in their heart. “I had never heard of Scotch Eggs before tonight. But, oh God they were delicious,” said Robin Durkin from Virginia. Robin was with her mom Patricia and they were indulging in Tim Finnegan’s finest foods. “We loved the corned beef and cabbage, it was wonderful.” There are plenty of dishes worth touting – especially those uniquely Irish. The Barbeque Guinness Chicken Wings are American in nature but Irish in nurture baked (and fried) in a rich sweet Guinness sauce. Also popular are Sausage Rolls made with Irish sausage wrapped in puff pastry and then baked. If you’re up for something special try the homemade potato soup with cheddar cheese topped with bacon and scallions. 112 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

corned beef and cabbage

There are a lot of choices at this family run restaurant but one thing that is irrevocable is that everything is fresh and homemade by Chef Jorge. With years of culinary expertise and a passion for his trade, Jorge is brimming with ideas and scrumptious Irish specialties. You may not think Fried Fish is a specialty - or French fries either - but when you taste Tim Finnegan’s beer battered fried fish and homemade hand-cut fries you’ll realize its world class. Their Shepherd’s Pie also lives up to its reputation as a mainstay of Irish culinary culture. Made with slow simmered ground beef, onions, peas and carrots it’s topped with fresh homemade mashed potatoes. Their Drunken Chicken is also a savory dish that will make your mouth water and your taste buds say, ‘where have you been all my life.’ This roasted chicken breast is served in an Irish whiskey cream sauce with mushrooms and onions, and comes with homemade mashed potatoes and veggies. If you hanker for something from a more seafaring habitat try the Mahi-Mahi in a white wine lemon butter sauce. Served with a choice of potato (baked, mashed or fries) and fresh veggies, it’s definitely a winner. Tim Finnegan’s also has sizzling New York Strip steak and nightly specials that will woo you over. Dishes such as Chicken Wellington (chicken breast with mushroom puree wrapped in a pastry puff); Filet Mignon, Herb Crusted Cod and blackened Mahi-Mahi are always a welcome surprise. That’s the secret of Tim Finnegan’s. They surprise guests with tasty dishes that will make you go “wow,” while at the same time treating you with the sweet intimacy of an invited guest. Jenny Fox and her son (who teaches yoga) were enjoying a spinach dip and Drunken Chicken, but couldn’t help commenting on the laid back comfort of their surroundings. “The people here are so down-to-earth, the food is exceptional and the waitress is wonderful.”

Traditional Irish Breakfast

But that’s not all. Every night of the week there is reason to celebrate. Monday night is Karaoke night, Tuesday is Irish night with 2 for 1 appetizers (and Dart games), Wednesday at 6 are Irish dance classes, Pub Quiz, $5 martinis and half-priced Mussels (steamed in an herb garlic white wine sauce and garlic bread). As the week revs up there’s more excitement on tap. Thursday is Singer-songwriter Open Jam sessions with Marie, Friday is Seafood Specials (fish and chips are only $9.95) with live music and Saturday you can indulge in an Irish Breakfast from 11am to 3pm with Live Music after 8pm. Sunday is a special day at Tim Finnegan’s and one that most people enjoy with gusto. There’s an Irish Breakfast, an Irish language class, Traditional Irish music and a Roast Dinner at 4pm for only $15. An Irish Breakfast consists of Irish Sausage, Irish Bacon (which is wonderful), Black and White Pudding, Grilled tomato and Mushrooms, Eggs and Beans. You can’t find a more authentic Irish meal this side of the Atlantic (and why even try). Tim Finnegan’s also serves lunch specials week days for $6.95 with your choice of soup, salad and fries or coleslaw. Not to be unrivaled are their homemade desserts that will delight your endorphins. The homemade Bailey’s cheesecake with Oreo cookie crust and Irish Bread Pudding is heavenly (perhaps more so). They also have an outstanding selection of whiskey with rare brands like Yellow Spot and Green Spot. And, as a special treat they have an “Irish Whiskey Tour,” that when completed you get a Waterford Crystal Whiskey Glass with your name engraved on it. Not only is there a full bar (with Beer, Wine, Martinis, Liquor) but the friendly banter and good vibes will make you wonder, “Where did the time go?”

Shepherd’s pie

That was the owner’s master plan. “Our customers are what it’s all about here. Friendships have been formed here and we have all laughed and cried together - it really is a very special place. My staff is all-important to me as well. They’re my family in the USA, and as I look around at this restaurant, I am filled with pride,” said Lisa. With St. Patrick’s Day upon us brace yourself for an amazing day. It kicks off with an Irish Breakfast at 9am and at 1pm the legendary singing duo Kathy and Andreas Durkin (direct from Ireland) will entertain and they’ll be Irish Step Dancers and Pipers. Happy Hour is every day from 11am to 7pm. But take our word for it; every day is a happy day at Time Finnegan’s. Marge and Jack from New Jersey couldn’t agree more. “We are totally impressed with the food, the bartender and the waitress. The people here are just extraordinary.” You bet they are! ask the Is Every Meal Creating An Opportunity to Heal?

W

e have been witnessing post after post on social media, article after article about the chemistry and adulteration of most commercial pet foods. Starting with ingredients such as preservatives, food coloring, artificial flavorings and other additives that are known carcinogens, toxins and even contaminated ingredients, it is a wonder our pets survive at all. Recent testing revealed that even those foods sold by your veterinarian contain many of these same ingredients that are in the supermarket brands, even though they are labeled as premium and functional foods. Compare the ingredient labels and you will see they all contain most of the same ingredients. What makes them different? You trust that the pet food and veterinary industries are delivering a product that will keep your pet healthy. You are influenced by the great promotional materials and commercials that visually depict images of fresh foods supposedly in that bag, box or can which subsequently gives an impression that these products are filled with perfectly prepared foods that your pet will thrive on. When you open those packages, do you see any of those real food items? Does it smell

like that fresh cooked meal that was presented on the package or in the commercial? By observation of the food itself, can you tell what is really in it? The questions posed here illustrate the problem that most pet owners have in selecting food for their pets. Most varieties look and smell the same to us. Now to complicate matters, the manufacturers and dealers, including your pet’s health provider, are telling you to only feed one food so not to upset their fragile stomach. Unfortunately, most of the information you are receiving from them is as unhealthy as the food being proposed. You know that you could never lead a long, healthy life if you were only fed dry cereal or cans of highly processed mystery material labeled as food. Your pet needs high energy, fresh species appropriate foods to build and heal their bodies on a regular basis. Different foods contain very unique nutritional components, all of which have a special place in the function of your pets’ health. The chemistry of each of these basic food components plays a unique role to strengthen and heal the body by both supplying nutrients and removing toxins. When using processed foods

derived from commercial manufacturers, these unique functions and nutritional value is artificially altered. Take any food you eat and compare the nutrient values between raw and cooked. They will differ tremendously. Some of those changes may be favorable but in most cases, the nutrients are degraded significantly when cooked. So, is every meal an opportunity to heal? YES! Food is medicine. Every nutrient we and our pets consume has a purpose. Excesses of natural products are easily eliminated whereas synthetics, man-made chemical compounds will confuse and stress healthy bodily functions. As a result, drugs are prescribed and eventually cause the body NOT to heal itself. The goal for a healthy pet is to provide the best, freshest, naturally raised foods possible and this will have the greatest impact on your pets overall health! Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM co-own Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach and co-host PetHealthCafe.com radio show. Chuck ~ “I’m a bit frightened in this shelter setting but I’m trying my best to make new friends so I can find my forever home. I’m a 1 year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix and I need gentle, quiet reassurance until I get to know you. My life has been ‘ruff’ but I’m ready to move on, into your home and heart.”

Charlie ~ “Cute, huh? Yeah, that’s what I hear, yet I’m still homeless so maybe you can come meet me to see if we’re a match? I’m as sweet and lovable as I look! I’m a 2 yearold Rat Terrier mix who loves people and going for walks. I’m lots of fun and all I ask for is a loving home. Let’s be buddies!”

Spike ~ “I’m Spike, but don’t tell anyone a better name for me would’ve been Cupcake, because I’m the sweetest guy around! I’m a Boxer / Pit mix, just about 7 months old. Look into my pretty blue eyes, then come to meet me at Tri-County! I’ll wait right here for you!”

A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “DATING UPSTREAM” “Uptown girl… You know I can’t afford to buy her pearls” - Billy Joel (1983) As my readership relates, I usually don’t share personal anecdotes but this is far too interesting not to divulge. In my mission to be proactive in 2015, I have cautiously yet optimistically put my profile on one online dating website. I have yet to make the first move with anyone but have received a barrage of emails from men ranging from the age of 21-65. If anything, it’s a major ego boost while providing serious comedy relief when I share some of the “nutty like a fruitcake” emails. Thus far, I have been propositioned for a night of sex by a 25 year old planning a visit to Miami, a couple who wants me to literally “swing” from a chandelier and another adolescent, who apparently has a toe fetish from looking at a full length photo of me in strappy sandals. I mean, I know I have pretty cute, manicured tootsies, but really?? Those emails are fun and games but what I am about to share pretty much sums up why at 44 years young, I am still single and not willing to settle. I received a very pleasant email from a man with no photo, but with a bio that seemed to be a perfect match. Intrigued but suspicious, I responded that he had the upper hand by seeing me and unless he sent photos, I wasn’t interested. Not trying to be superficial, but sight unseen equals “NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, DUDE.” He further explained that due to his high profile job, it precluded him from posting. He asked for an email and promised to send them. A few days later, I received an email whereby he asked me to confirm my identity so he could send the pictures. This joker of sorts needed me to confirm my identity? He’s the guy with no pictures and an already “Shady Mc Shaderson” omnipresence. Still giving the benefit of the doubt, I confirmed and figured why not? After not hearing back for two weeks, I assumed that like many, he was full of sh*t. Obviously, he wasn’t legit. It smelled to me like a catfish operation or adultery; either way, I want128 March 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ed no part of it. Not lost or ever forgotten…I received the following email: Good Afternoon Nicole, I am sorry I did not respond to your confirmation email sooner. My career with work has been keeping me extra, extra busy these days since we are now in the peak season with all the “snow birds” down for the winter. I have been thinking about our possible connection/match and I thought of the movie, “She’s Out of My Leaugue.” You are so involved with so many different organizations and businesses that I would, I beleive, not feel comfortable because I do not own my own business as you do. I have a very handsome income and live quite comfortably in the Plantation Acres community of Fort Lauderdale. Just money=wise, I am quite comfortable. But I think with your very high community involvement, I would not feel very important in your life. Sorry, just my inference/ impression. I am quite impressed with your LinkedIn resume and all of your writing in the Atlantic Avenue Magazine---great writing!----and all of the companies for which you have worked in such responsible capacities! I do wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Thank you for giving me the chance to possibly meet you. Although our Match of 98% shows, it is based on just responses to the questions we both answered. Not very scientific. Be safe and good health and happiness! ~Martin~ Yes people, that is the verbatim email with the spelling errors purposely left in for good measure. First off buddy, learn about spell check. Nothing says intellectually inferior than someone who can’t spell or refuses to take the time to

spell check. Second, can we say “STALKER?” My profile states that I write a singles column for a local magazine but doesn’t specify a name of the publication. Unless he literally did a Google search for singles columns in South Florida, there is probably little to no way he could have discovered my identity. Perhaps he hired a private investigator or he just is super creepy. Regardless, he had my full dossier. Once I shook off the ominous feeling that I had just been cyber violated, a sense of relief came over me. Clearly this guy felt he couldn’t compete after a very superficial summation of my resume. At least he was honest enough to admit that we weren’t a match and that he clearly couldn’t measure up. Thanks Martin! Every story has a silver lining. I dodged a bullet for sure. There is nothing worse than someone feeling like they are second banana. As relationships, especially new ones cultivate, both parties need to feel that they are at the very least, equal. A couple should be equally supportive and accepting of each other’s fabulousness, right? In my opinion, it’s the foundation of a successful relationship. But as Dr. Seuss once said, “Why fit in when you were born to STAND OUT?” Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus

I love working in Pineapple Grove because you have amazing shops and restaurants like you would find in New York City, but with a laid back, beach vibe.

Being in Pineapple Grove I get to serve friends that I love. I also like that we are near the beach and the lifestyle here is phenomenal.

The Pineapple Grove Arts District is one of the main arteries of creativity for Delray Beach. It has a fantastic free spirited vibe, filled with some very talented and passionate individuals who pour their heart and soul into their creations.

The 7 Traits of Leadership

{

On March 10, voters will go to the polls in Delray and choose to elect a mayor and two commissioners.

With three seats up for grabs, the balance of power in Delray will be decided, most likely by a very small group of registered voters. That’s sad, because voting is a right that we should not take for granted and voting in a local election is especially important because local government touches our lives in a big way. From how our town will look and feel to the amount of local taxes we will pay, city government is important but often ignored. It shouldn’t be. It seems a big lament in society today is a lack of leadership at all levels of government. I agree, but I also believe that our best and brightest often shun public service because of the negative climate of politics today. While it is true that” if you can’t stand the

heat stay out of the kitchen”; it’s also understandable when smart, capable people don’t want to swim in a cesspool of dysfunction. Communities should encourage vigorous debate and lots of accountability, but push back against vile behavior, corruption and the politics of personal destruction. If you do, there is a chance that your pool of leadership may expand and that’s always a good thing. Atlantic Ave magazine is a celebration of Delray and we take great pride in spotlighting the people who make this a very special and very successful small city. But while we don’t wallow in politics in these pages, we are aware that good government, strong leadership and progressive policies play a huge role in the future prosperity of Delray Beach. So while we won’t recommend candidates, we do urge you to vote and to study the issues and the candidates so that you can cast an informed ballot. With three seats up for grabs and a great many issues to be decided by the new commission it’s important to understand what good leadership looks like.

Nobody is opposed to great leadership but few communities take the time to actually discuss what it takes to bring it about. Often we fail to monitor leaders and hold them accountable for performance and for promises. Too often, we “suffer” poor leaders and decide to just “wait them out”. One of the best books on leadership I’ve seen discusses this problem in-depth. In “Why We Are So Bad at Picking Good Leaders” the authors outline seven character traits that great leaders possess. The rub, so to speak, is that if leaders are missing any of the seven traits, they are doomed to either come up short or fail. The traits are: integrity, vision, passion, emotional intelligence, empathy, courage and judgment. That’s as good a list of traits as I’ve seen. While it’s hard to determine whether a candidate possesses these traits from a mail piece or a campaign sign, in a small town we should know those who seek to represent us a lot better than those we send to Tallahassee or Washington. Before you vote, try to attend a candidate’s forum, email a candidate on an issue of importance or try and meet them as they go door to door. See if they exhibit any of the seven traits or whether they have a glaring weakness. It’s important, because we entrust our community to the brave people who step into the arena. They can either make Delray better or hurt our town; it’s important that we choose wisely and make our vote count.
