It’s March.

A

lmost hard to believe but a quarter of 2016 is in the rear view mirror.

As you’ll see inside these pages, Delray Beach has

become an almost indescribably vibrant place with

activities galore. It wasn’t always like this as we’ve noted before. There was a time when if you wanted to dine or attend a festival you often had to pack up the car and head out of town. No longer. And I think that’s a good thing.

I don’t take the vibrancy and the energy for granted. I appre-

ciate it, I’m grateful for it and I enjoy watching it, even if I pass on the occasional art show and festival. It is still nice to know that it is there.

The best cities are the ones full of activities and amenities. From

tennis tournaments and festivals to recreation and fashion shows, we have it all plus art, music and culture.

As we prepare for a busy month, Atlantic Ave Magazine is here

to serve as your guide to the best this great city has to offer.

In between, we offer good advice on health, lifestyle and design

and introduce you to the people, businesses and advertisers who make this place so special.

As I’m out and about I often run into advertisers and readers.

It’s wonderful to meet everyone and to know that they appreciate having their own local magazine to celebrate the best of Delray. I also still am in touch with mayors and commissioners from

other cities across the country. Many have remarked over the years that they too wish they had a local magazine to spotlight what’s good about their cities.

I can relate and that’s why Atlantic Ave Magazine is a special

publication and the people who make it possible are special too. I am indebted to their generosity of spirit and hard work and of

course those advertisers who make sure that we can publish and distribute such a high quality publication for free, no less. Very cool.

Have a great March. See you on

“I do” on New Year’s Day 2016 after 50 years of dating. Long before the couple became husband and wife, they were friends and neighbors in Buffalo, NY. Jane used to cut Sam’s hair at a barbershop where she worked. They eventually became friends, and their love blossomed after their first date to a Chinese restaurant on St. Patrick’s Day. Over the years, the couple has lived and raised their children together. After retiring, they moved to Florida. They never saw a need to get married until Sam experienced a health setback. Jane was unable to see him in the hospital because they weren’t officially married. Shortly after he was released, he visited a jeweler and finally put a ring on Jane’s finger during a vacation to Italy. The couple is now enjoying their first few months of being married at Harbour’s Edge, the senior living community where they live.

Dorothy and Felix now live at Abbey Delray, a senior living community in Delray Beach. On the walls of their apartment are memories that they’ve shared over the years of family members and their wedding day. And the couple is still making memories, enjoying different activities around the community with friends. The two say there’s no secret to the length of their relationship. They say it’s equal parts luck and perseverance. Felix, who will turn 100 this year, says his best advice for young couples is to respect one another and commit yourself to the one you share your life with. They’re one of those couples that makes your heart smile when you see them.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in March for $50 or less.

et’s get crafty! March is National Craft Month and I truly feel that when all else fails, grab your paints and get your craft on. If you’re a bit rusty in the artistic field, head to the 19th Annual Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival. Not only is this a perfect time to peruse the Avenue in a sundress, but you can also gather tons of ideas for how to let your inner artist out. The Festival bring more than 100 of the nation’s most talented artisans who feature jewelry, pottery, ceramics, photography, painting, clothing and much more, all of which are handmade in America. This is a really great opportunity to either find a hand-crafted piece for your home, or to see how one of your ideas can come to fruition. Either way it’s a win, win because you’re outdoors among the beauty of the Avenue and you get soak in the craftiness of all the vendors! The Festival is held March 5 and 6 along Fourth Avenue and Atlantic Avenue and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is free so spoil your inner artist without the price tag. Please visit www.artfestival.com or call (561) 7466615 for more information.

I

love going green and I try to do it on the daily. If you’re in need of some good ol’ fashioned green, plan to head to the 48th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade! St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17, but in the spirit of Delray, why wait? The Festival and Parade is held 24 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

March 11 and 12 so you have a full weekend planned of all things Irish. The Festival honors Irish heritage and the service of the International Firefighters, drawing marching pipe and drum bands from around the world. In past years, marching firefighter bands from Dublin, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Canada and Australia have joined the festivities and traditional play at the Irish Siamsa and party. There are tons of restaurants along the Avenue that feature drink and food specials so it’s guaranteed to be a good time for all. If you prefer to get a front row seat, make sure you arrive early because the Avenue turns into standing room quickly, but it’s all good because the parade lasts for a while and you might even get to see a helicopter (no lie)! The pre-party starts March 11 at 5 p.m. and the parade festivities start March 12 at 11 a.m. Please visit www.stpatrickparade.com or call (561) 990-6125 for more information.

ot sure how kale ended up on everything, but I like to indulge in an outreach nutritional plan that includes plenty of wine, cheese and braised meats. Yes, I’m also obsessed with avocado, fresh fruit and the like, but, let’s be honest, no one fancies quinoa with everything. March is National Nutrition Month and thankfully we have the Second Annual Bacon and Bourbon Festival to wet and whet our nutritional palates. Held March 18 and 19 from 12 to 11 p.m., you

are invited to enjoy a culinary tour of bacon and bourbon as provided by our local chefs. Some treats might include Forever Roasted Bourbon BBQ Park and Bacon Sandwich and a Bacon Ice Cream Sundae with a Bourbon and Caramel Sauce, but there’s so much more so be sure to arrive hungry. There’s also plenty of backyard games to play including corn hole, bocce ball, jenga, checkers and a pig race game so you can put it a little calorie-burning action to make room for more feasting. Gather the friends and head to the Festival, if only for the sake of your nutrition. The Bacon and Bourbon Festival is held at the Old School Square Park, 51 N. Swinton Avenue. Please visit www.delraybaconfest.com or call (561) 279-0907 for more information.

o I expect great success when I’m flipping an omelet? No. Do I expect a successful ROI from my shower singing when MC comes on the radio? A most resounding no. However, I do expect tail-wagging success any time there are animals around. March is International Expect Success Month and if you want a successful viewing or participating experience, mark your calendars for the 15th Annual Easter Bonnet Pet Parade at the GreenMarket. This is a fun, family- and furry-friendly event and dogs, cats, goats and rabbits have all made appearances in the past. Pets and human owners can register from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and the parade starts at 10 a.m. with a $5 suggested donation that directly benefits Dezzy’s Second Chance Dog Rescue. The parade will head south on N.E. First Avenue then right on Atlantic Avenue to the Cornell Museum for judging prizes for pets (and their human companions). Categories for the competition include Most Traditional, Original, Funniest Hats, Most Tropical, Owner/Doggie Look-a-Like, Most Frou-Frou and Best of Show. Can you just imagine the paws-abilities? Don’t forget to stop by the GreenMarket before heading home to get your fresh fruit and veggie fix. And meat, cheese, pickles, baked goods, jams… The GreenMarket is held at N.E. Second Ave. Please visit www.delraycra.org or call (561) 276-8640 for more information.

I

love myself some humor. If there’s one thing I think I’m mildly good at, it’s humor, and if someone tells me that makes me an artist, I’m all about it. March is Humorists are Artists Month and if you’re tired of going to improv comedy clubs for some laughter, head to the Delray Beach Playhouse for their “Little Shop of Horrors.” Featuring maneating plants from outer space, this sci-fi musical recounts the story of Seymour Krelborn, an unfortunate clerk in a Skid Row flower shop who discovers a small plant sent by aliens to take over the Earth. He nurtures it with his own blood while trying to rescue a girl named Audrey from an abusive relationship with a sadistic dentist. “Little Shop of Horrors” has won more awards than you can count and how lucky is it that we can view it in our backyard. The play is held March 28 through April 10 at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are only $30 so take your date for a cocktail pre-show so she’s all warmed up for the pains of uproariously laughter. The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 Lake Shore Drive. Please visit www.delraybeachplayhouse.com or call (561) 272-1281 for more information.

ransplanted from New York in 1975, I have spent the past 42 years in Boca Raton creating great personal and business relationships while building up my financial knowledge. This led me to open my Independent Insurance and Financial Firm, Guidance Wealth Management ( GuideMyWealth .com) . As an FAU Graduate of the School of Engineering, I was not satisfied working in a corporate cubicle and needed to be more creative and inventive. So, 23 years ago, I followed in my father’s footsteps and went into the Insurance and Financial Arena with a large institution. There I learned all I could but I realized that no matter which large institution I worked for, I did not have the ability to totally solve my clients needs with an independent view. So in 2002, I went independent and my firm has grown steadily every year since. We have local and out of state clients; clients for 15 years that I have never met in person, but feel like they are part of the family. My goal is to Simplify and Clarify Your Financial Strategy, Create Tax Free Income, Protect Your Assets and Family, Create Special Needs Planning for Loved Ones. Over the years, it is very satisfying to See Client’s Goals & Dreams become a Positive Reality. Guidance Wealth Management Inc 301 W. Atlantic Ave #0-5, Delray Beach 33444 561-455-0059

Our Boat House

By Karen Marcil

M

y name is Karen Marcil and I have been a Florida resident since 1987. At a very young age, I had a deep yearning to be close to the sea water, the sandy beaches and the salt air. I wanted to recreate my home to be one that was warm, welcoming and would bring in the essence of the sea. With the help of my sister, an interior designer, I searched for the most special, unique coastal furnishings - nautical antiques, architectural elements and classic easy to care for furnishings. I incorporated copper cargo lights, porthole doors salvaged from old ships, washable slip-covered furniture and a mix of weathered, reclaimed wood pieces creating a home that I love and cherish to this day. After this journey I realized that there was a need for a home furnishing source for people that love the sea…. And so, Our Boat House was formed. Starting as a nationwide coastal furnishing on-line store in 2010 and then growing to two store locations in Vero Beach and now in Delray Beach. Visit today to reinvent your home to be inviting, comfortable and unique - one that looks like it took years of collecting to create! ello, my name is Jeffrey Baldewsingh. My first experience with home-buying came at a young age. Splitting time between the suburbs of Atlanta and the sun-soaked neighborhoods of South Florida, world-class family-sized homes were always within my line of sight. Given my proximity to these types of homes, I was always keenly interested in how they were bought and sold. With this in mind, shortly after a stint at Palm Beach State College, I realized my true passion was helping others find the properties of their dreams. In Fall of 2015, I became a fullylicensed real estate agent. Soon after completely the licensure process, I immediately began working as a sales associate for Deluxe Properties. In addition to my expertise in the realm of real estate, I’m also a fluent German speaker. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, my number one priority is to ensure my clients are satisfied with my service. y name is David Freeburn and my wife is Cindi. We are the owners of Exhilaride Golf Cart Rentals in Delray Beach FL. We fell in love with the town while visiting in the 1990’s. Coming from the Philadelphia area we bought a second home in Delray in 2011, and recently sold our northern residence to become fulltime Delray residents. I am an avid tennis player and enjoy the excellent facilities available. I love the weather, urban setting and top rated beaches. Both my wife and I volunteer through various organizations and boards in the community. Our goals in establishing a business in Delray were to enhance the live-work-play motto the city personifies, to “give back” to the community with “green” business, and to add an element of fun for visitors and residents alike. Street Legal Golf Cart Rentals are new to Delray Beach. Many residents own golf carts and know how great they are for getting around town. The (electric) carts seat up to 6 passengers, use a smaller parking footprint and are a quiet and connected way to enjoy the beach-side community. We are optimistic that our business will grow enabling us to add to our fleet and provide jobs for others in Delray Beach! Exhilaride golf cart rentals 2455 N. oly Smokes Batman, March is your month! Yes fanboys, the eagerly awaited Batman vs. Superman opens toward the end of the month, but before that a lot of other interesting things are going on. March 4 Uh-oh, “London Has Fallen.” This sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” stars Gerard Butler as S.S. head Mike Banning, who discovers a plot to kill world leaders at a London conference. Banning is aided in his crusade by U.S. President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart), Vice President and Speaker Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) and an ace MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley). Director Babak Najafi replaces original Antoine Fuqua. For those of you not familiar with military flag communication, “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” stands for W.T.F. That nicely sums up the true-life book “Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan” by journalist Kim Barker, who covered the wars there. Tina Fey

Gail Gadot “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice”

plays Kim Barker, with Margot Robbie as Tanya, Billy Bob Thornton as Hollandek, Martin Freeman as Iain MacKelpie and Shakira as Sheila Vand. Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa previously helmed “Focus and “Crazy, Stupid Love.” Robert Carlock adapted the script from Barker’s book. March 11 “The Brothers Grimsby” are played by Mark Strong, as Sebastian, a top MI6 assassin, and his screw-up younger brother Norman “Nobby;” an English football hooligan played by Sasha Baron Cohen, who also co-wrote the script. The mismatched brothers must team up to save the world. Also in the cast are Isla Fisher, Penelope Cruz, Rebel Wilson, Scott Adkins and Ian McShane. Louis Leterrier (“Now You See Me,” “Clash of the Titans”) directs. “The Young Messiah.” Not much is known about the early life of Jesus of Nazareth. Anne Rice wrote a novel that images what happened to young Jesus when at age 7 he and his family left Alexandria, Egypt and returned to Nazareth after the death of King Herod. Unfortunately Herod had a son of the same name (Jonathan Bailey) just as determined to see Jesus dead. Other main players are Vincent Walsh as Joseph, Sara Lazzo as Mary, Sean Bean as Severus, Angi Scott as Miriam and Adam Greaves-Neal as the young Jesus. March 16 Easter is coming March 27. What better time for “Miracles From Heaven?” Jennifer garner stars as Christy, a mother with a 10-year-old daughter Anne (Kylie Rogers) who suffers a rare, incurable digestive disorder that is miraculously cured after terrible accident. The true story became a novel by Christy Beam. Co-stars are Queen Latifah, Martin Henderson and John Carroll Lynch. Patricia Riggen (“The 33”) directs. March 18 “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” is the second part of a trilogy by Veronica Roth. Robert Schwentke, who directed the first installment “Insurgent,’ returns for this installment in which Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley and her buddy Four (Theo James) must go over

the wall that encircles Chicago to see what is going on outside. It is not good. Naomi Watts is Evelyn, Miles teller is Peter, Ansel Elgout is Caleb Prior and Jeff Daniels is David. Not to be confused with the 1960s music television show is the science-fiction thriller “Midnight Special,” which stars Michael Shannon as a father who will do anything to protect his son (Joel Edgerton) as they are pursued by religious extremists, local law enforcement and finally the highest levels of Federal Government. Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and Scott Haze also star under the director of writer Jeff Nichols (“Mud”). March 25 Here it is DC Comics Fan boys and girls: “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Come on guys, can’t we just get along? It seems Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) fears Clark Kent/Superman is getting too big for his britches. While they face off, Lex Luther (Jesse Eisenberg) plans to wreak more havoc on Metropolis. The two super heroes will have to team with Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman (Gail Gadot) to foil Luther’s dastardly plot. Amy Adams is Lois Lane, Diane Lane is Martha Kent, Laurence Fishbourne is Perry White and Zack Snyder (“Watchmen,” “Man of Steel”) is director. “My Big Fat Wedding 2” is a sequel to the 2002 romantic comedy that is the most popular of all time. Most of the Portokalos family returns, including Nia Vardalos (who also wrote the script) as Toula Portokalos-Miller; John Corbett as her husband, Ian Miller; Lainie Kazan as Maria Portokalos; Michael Constantine as Kostas “Gus” Portokalos and Andrea Martin as Aunt Voula. A family secret and crisis brings the gang back together. Kirk Jones (“What to Expect When You Are Expecting”) directs. What do you expect from “The Disappointments Room?” We’re guessing disappointments and worse in this psychological thriller by D.J. Caruso (“Eagle Eye,” “Disturbia”). Dana (Kate Beckinsale) and David (Mel Rado) and their son Lucas (Duncan Joiner) move from a Brooklyn apartment to a large, rundown Southern mansion as their new dream home, but it seems nightmares live up in the attic.

Sisi: Empress on Her Own

by Allison Pataki Released March 8, 2016

Married to Emperor Franz Joseph, Elisabeth—fondly known as Sisi—captures the hearts of her people as their “fairy queen,” but beneath that dazzling persona lives a far more complex figure. In mid-nineteenth-century Vienna, the halls of the Hofburg Palace buzz not only with imperial waltzes and champagne but with temptations, rivals, and cutthroat intrigue. Feeling stifled by strict protocols and a turbulent marriage, Sisi grows restless. A free-spirited wanderer, she finds solace at her estate outside Budapest. There she rides her beloved horses and enjoys visits from the Hungarian Statesman Count Andrássy, the man with whom she’s unwittingly fallen in love. But tragic news brings Sisi out of her fragile seclusion, forcing her to return to her capital and a world of gossip, envy, and sorrow where a dangerous fate lurks in the shadows. Through love affairs and loss, dedication and defiance, Sisi struggles against conflicting desires: to keep her family together, or to flee amid the collapse of her suffocating marriage and the gathering tumult of the First World War. In an age of crumbling monarchies, Sisi fights to assert her right to the throne beside her husband, to win the love of her people and the world, and to save an empire. But in the end, can she save herself? Featuring larger-than-life historic

A Memorable Evening With

By skip sheffield photos by tom craig “An Evening With Graham Nash” was an evening to remember for fans of the beloved British singer, songwriter and guitarist.

52 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Graham Nash

Nash performed an intimate show at Parker Playhouse, accompanied only by his new musical partner, guitarist Shane Fontayne. Many in the graying audience wore tiedyed 1960s regalia. All were transported back into a time in retrospect that seemed simpler, happier and more hopeful. Nash began the concert with the familiar strains of his Hollies hit, “Bus Stop.” Nash first achieved fame as guitarist and one of the three principal singers of British pop group The Hollies. The wry “King Midas in Reverse” was also from The Hollies catalog. Graham Nash left the Hollies in 1968 to join the American super group Crosby, Stills & Nash. Later Neil Young would be added to the group in time for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to make history at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. What made the concert so special was that Nash provided a spoken preface about how and where each song came from. For

Instance, “Marrakesh Express” was inspired by a trip on the famed Moroccan railway. “Immigration Man” was inspired by an incident at Canadian Customs when Nash was inexplicably detained. “To The Last Whale” evolved on an impromptu, rambling trip on David Crosby’s sailboat from Fort Lauderdale, through the Panama Canal to California. “Our House” is pretty much a literal account of an idyllic Southern California morning with Nash’s then lover, Joni Mitchell. Nash confessed the past year has been difficult for him. His marriage of 34 years broke up, but he has found a new lady love and a new songwriting and musical partner in British master guitarist Shane Fontayne. “This Path Tonight” is the title of Nash’s first album with Fontayne and it also describes his present hopeful state. Nash did not have to encourage the audience to sing along on “Teach Your Children.” Everyone already knew the words by heart.

Conservative and Non-Invasive Treatment for Hip Pain

{

BY DR. TRAVIS LAMPERSKI

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 285,000 total hip replacements are performed each year in the United States. As many as 60 percent of patients who opt for hip replacement surgery will end up with clots in the deep veins, clots which pose a serious risk of death or disability. More conservative, cutting edge options for your hip pain are available.

Hip complaints are a big reason people seek medical help and our office sees its share of patients suffering from some type of hip pain. A majority of hip pain results from recent or past injuries such as falls, sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents. Patients that suffer from acute or chronic hip pain don’t always have isolated direct hip involvement; in fact, rarely the hip joint itself is not the main contributor of the pain. Pain can often be caused by narrowing disc space in the low back and areas like lumbosacral joint, sacroiliac regions, piriformis muscle and bursas. If these secondary areas are ignored, total resolution of the pain in unlikely. Anatomy of the Hip The hip joint is labeled as a ball and socket joint much like the shoulder. The ball portion is made up of the top (head) of the thighbone (femur) and the socket is formed by an area of the pelvis called the acetabulum. Within the joint is a ring of cartilage called the labrum that surrounds the acetabulum and provides a smooth surface and forms a fluid seal for proper joint lubrication. Muscles, ligaments and tendons are responsible for keeping the joint stable and functioning pain free. What causes hip pain? Hip pain can be the result of a number of injuries or conditions. Some of the specific conditions that affect the hip include the following: Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis also known as “degenerative joint disease” is one of the most common causes of hip pain in elder adults. Arthritis means “joint inflammation”. Inflammation and injury to the joint causes a breakdown of the ring of cartilage discussed earlier and 54 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

eventually, your cortical bone that lies under the cartilage rubs together producing pain, swelling, decreased painful range of motion and at times deformity. Some risk factors such as being overweight, age, improperly treated injuries, muscle weakness and poor biomechanics increase your chances of developing hip osteoarthritis. Bursitis A bursa is a saclike structure between the skin and bone or between tendons, ligaments and bone. Bursae are lined by synovial tissue which produces fluid that lubricates and reduces friction between these structures. Often these bursas can become inflamed, producing pain and swelling, leading to a condition known as Bursitis. Bursitis of the hip is a very common cause of hip pain. Sciatica Sciatica hip pain is an excruciating and often times debilitating condition that millions of people suffer from each year. Hip pain from sciatica is extremely common. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and hip to the foot. Several spinal disorders can produce nerve compression creating pain into the hip region with spinal stenosis and disc compression being the most common. Conservative, Cutting Edge Treatments After a proper diagnosis, treatment is aimed at restoring function to the area that is producing the hip pain. Multiple cutting edge treatments include non-surgical spinal decompression, class IV laser therapy, Neurophysiologic rehabilitation and chiropractic manipulations. Decompression of the lumbar spine specifically L2-L3 will restore appropriate nerve flow by slowly lengthening and decompressing the spi-

nal segments. Laser therapy is a medical breakthrough therapeutic device with unparalleled applications and treatment outcomes. The Laser works by converting light into biochemical energy, resulting in normal cell function, which causes symptoms (PAIN) to disappear. Laser can be placed directly over the hip region to reduce pain and inflammation. Performing specific neurophysiologic rehabilitation of the part of the brain that controls muscle tone of the hip flexors and extensors helps to create long lasting stability. Lastly, chiropractic manipulation of the sacroiliac and hip joints can aid in restoring proper biomechanics and hip motion. No Animals on the Beach

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

As Delray Beachers are shaping up this summer, embracing the gym and donning lighter clothes, too many look like they belong in Palm Beach – at the Palm Beach Zoo, that is.

You know the look - Caterpillar furry lips, hair spilling out of shirts, rainforest armpits - something out of bad movies from the 80s. What you may not know is that traditional hair removal techniques can make things worse. Shaving bumps and razor burn are only the start. Smelly hair removal creams, shaving, plucking, waxing and tweezing only provide temporary relief. Worse, they can actually stimulate hair growth! Electrolysis may be effective but may also require years of ongoing painful treatments. It’s time to think laser hair removal. The latest laser hair removal systems offer many advantages to tame unsightly hair concerns. They provide comfort, speed, accuracy, predictable long-term effectiveness, and most of all safety.

The process is simple. The laser focuses a beam of highly concentrated light into the pigment in the hair follicles. Just a fraction of a second is all it takes to vaporize the pigment. The result? The hair’s growth is either eliminated or significantly reduced. With those benefits, it’s no surprise that laser hair removal is soaring in popularity. It is the fastest growing cosmetic enhancement procedure in America. Almost 4 million procedures were performed last year. Laser hair removal is most satisfying under the care of a dermatologist or medical professional with in depth knowledge of the many different skin types and full understanding of the latest and most advanced laser technologies. Thanks to the patented DCD cooling system, patients are finding unprecedented comfort too, clearly superlative to older laser technologies. Men and women alike find laser treatments to be safe, fast, gentle, and effective, plus the treatments leave skin looking and feeling smoother, silkier and sexier. This is the Rx to make style seekers ready for the beach, the pool or nightclub instead of the gorilla enclosure at the Zoo. Dr. Thomas C. Bite into a healthy lifestyle!

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Enjoy food that nourishes a healthy body and smile.

While you should always focus on eating right, March is National Nutrition Month and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages everyone to pay special attention as to what you’re putting in your body. Adopting a healthy lifestyle promotes your overall health and can reduce your risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some types of cancer, so it’s a win, win. Use this month as a way to evaluate your dietary health and make sure you’re as healthy as you can be! As we all know, and as the Academy points out, the foods we eat have a direct impact on not only our overall health but also our oral health. Bacteria rely on carbohydrates to thrive. Any dentist will urge you to cut back on candy and sweets as they consist of simple sugars that feed the bacteria in your mouth and enhance tooth decay. There are also tons of hidden sugars in foods you might not expect, so take a look at the food labels and pay attention to anything ending in “-ose” so you can avoid it. These foods usually offer little nutritional value and there are much better alternatives to satisfy your hunger or a craving. The building blocks for strong, healthy teeth include getting enough calcium (strengthens bones and extends the life of your teeth), Vitamin D (helps you absorb calcium), Vitamin A (helps your mouth heal quickly, strengthens enamel and prevents dry mouth) and Vitamin C (keeps gums healthy, prevents teeth from loosening and protects against gingivitis). Eating for a healthy smile and happy body is easy as there are a lot of options that not only taste good but are beneficial. Dairy products, for example, provide the body with nutritional items that support tooth enamel. Foods high in protein feature phosphorus, which is a nutrient critical to 58 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

oral health (when eaten in the suggested amount), and can be found in cheese, fish, seeds and nuts, lean meat, lentils and more. Try to also include a colorful array of foods for your palate. Fruits and vegetables make for a bright and healthy addition to any meal, and it’s a great idea to eat them with other foods throughout the day so the acid and sugar is ingested with everything else you’re eating. Additionally, eating fresh fruits and vegetables helps protect teeth by stimulating the production of saliva, which cleanses the mouth and makes it less acidic. Just remember that good nutrition should always be on your mind, for the sake of your body and smile! A good diet is critical for the

health of your mouth and staying healthy, but it won’t make up for poor dental hygiene so continue to see your dentist for checkups and cleanings. Be proactive about creating healthy habits for the entire year, and smile happy and healthy! Spodak Dental Group 3911 West Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-498-0050 www.SpodakDental.com

Change Your Mind, Transform Your Body

{

By Ashley Sica

If you are serious about transforming your body and getting in the best possible shape there’s a couple things you will need to do before you start your physical transformation. You might think I’m going to say…plan your workouts, clean out your pantry etc…but not so fast!

Before you can start to transform your body you have to transform your mind. Transforming your body is pretty much ALL mental. If your mind is not in the right place your body will not follow. I’ve seen it time and time again being in the fitness industry for over 10 years. Your mindset is the ONLY thing that separates you from having the body of your dreams. It’s the difference of reaching goals or missing them. With that being said here are some things to consider before beginning your transformation. Start by identifying your current mindset. You may feel hopeless, frustrated, discouraged about your current situation. You may feel you have tried everything to change your body but just can’t. You may feel frustrated because you lose and gain the same 10lb over and over. Whatever your situation may be, you need to realize what feelings you’re having and why you’re having them. Once you identify your current mindset you’ll be able to move forward with the right type of thinking. Which brings me to my next point, the power of positivity. A positive mindset 100% of the time during your transformation is a MUST. We attract what we think about. We become what we think about. Positive thoughts 60 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

yield positive results. So if you start your transformation with doubts about your abilities or doubts about hitting your goals you are already setting yourself up for failure. You have to know that there will be obstacles along the way, but you have to have the right mindset that obstacles will not hinder your final result. Meaning that whatever life throws you (because you know life is full of curveballs) you’ll be ready to handle any situation or bump in the road. I see too many people give up on their goals because of certain circumstances that are totally within their control. So be ready, willing and able to say and do, “Whatever comes my way, I’ve got this and I WILL do this!” The next key to a successful transformation is that you have to want it bad enough. Otherwise you will let EVERY excuse in the book stand in your way. I see this all the time. “I didn’t have time to get to the gym.” “It was just a couple extra slices of pizza.” Every client who comes to me and wants it bad enough, gets the results. The clients that think they want to transform but don’t have a yearning in their heart for change, don’t. It’s reAshley’s client Veronica 42yr old, mom of 2

ally as simple as that. New clients will ask me, “Do you think I have what it takes to transform?” And my answer is always, “Yes, anyone can transform as long as you want it bad enough!” When you want something bad enough your heart and head are into it and with that your body will follow suit. My last piece of advice is to leave your fear of failure at the door. There is nothing to be afraid of and the only way you can fail is by not even trying. Fear is often what holds us back from going after the things we really want in life. But what should really scare you is the thought of staying stagnant in your current situation. Just imagine living in a body you’re uncomfortable with for the rest of your life…now that seems scary! The only way you can fail is by giving up and throwing the towel in all together. Understand that transforming your body is marathon not a sprint. Every “body” is different and each person’s transformation will take a different amount of time. For some it will be three months for some it will be one year. Whatever it is for YOU, don’t ever give up and failure will never be an option. So remember before embarking on your physical transformation to make sure your mind is warmed up and ready to run with you. The mind is the most powerful tool we have and it can either make us or break us. So use it wisely and I can assure you that your transformation will be a little easier than you think! in Delray Means A Full Calendar By Linda brown

{

Beware the ides of March, unless you live in Delray Beach that is. March on Atlantic Avenue is chock full of events. Here’s a few we have curated for your pleasure.

Rock on The Square

If you love rock and roll mark your calendars for March 27. The first ever “Rock on the Square” will make its debut with a three band concert for one low price of $25. VIP seats are available for $50. Doors open at 5 pm and the music begins at 6 running until 10:30 pm. Everclear, Sister Hazel and Candlebox will perform back to back. If you love 90s music, this line up can’t be beat. The event promises to become a Delray staple and marks the first major innovation of new OSS President Rob Steele’s stint. Here’s a closer look at the bands: Everclear is an American alternative rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 1991.

62 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The band was formed by Art Alexakis, the band’s lead songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist; and for most of the band’s height of popularity, consisted of Craig Montoya on bass guitar and Greg Eklund on drums. After the limited release of their independently released debut album, World of Noise, the band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records: Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile, which were all certified platinum.

Sister Hazel is an alternative rock band from Gainesville, Florida, whose style also blends elements of folk rock, pop, classic rock ‘n’ roll and southern rock. Their mu-

sic is characterized by highly melodic tunes and prominent harmonies. Most of their songs have optimistic lyrics. The band’s instrumentation often features abrupt shifts among electric and acoustic sounds. Though often described as alternative, Sister Hazel leans toward an upbeat sound and away from the clashing punk often associated with the alternative rock genre.

Candlebox is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington. Since its formation in 1990, the group has released five studio albums, which have achieved multiplatinum and gold certification, as well as numerous charting singles, a compilation, and a hit CD+DVD. Get your tickets early, this event is sure to be popular.

A Tradition Continues

If you’ve never been to a Delray St. Patrick’s Day Parade, well, you are in for an experience. Retired firefighter John Fischer has made the parade his passion promoting the event year round. Yes, he’s the guy dressed as a leprechaun walking on the Ave. Fischer has also furthered the transformation of the event into an international celebration of firefighters and the departments they represent. As a result, expect to see fire engines from places near and

far. The change was made in 2010 but the parade’s roots go way back to 1968 when Maury Powers started the tradition. He was the owner of the legendary Powers Lounge on Atlantic. If you plan to go, make plans to get downtown early. The parade is a hugely popular event and that means big crowds and limited street views if you arrive late. The event is set for March 12 from 11 am to 7 pm. Bring sunscreen and stake out a spot on the ave.

Bacon Meets Bourbon A week after St. Patrick’s, you’ll be able to indulge the bacon lover in your family at the annual Bacon and Bourbon Festival at Old School Square. March 18 & 19 is the Second Annual Bacon & Bourbon Festival - Bacon is arguably the most beloved food in the universe, and this festival marries Bacon with the ultimate American made spirit, Bourbon. At the heart of the festivals is the commitment to create funfilled food-lover community events

featuring unique foods and beverages. Bacon and Bourbon is culinary journey in celebration of the pig and a barrel in beautiful downtown Delray Beach. Make sure to clear it with your doctor, your cardiologist and your mother, enjoy life at the Delray Beach Bacon & Bourbon Festival. 561-279-0907, or visit delraybaconfest.com for more information.

Bahamian Roots Celebrated

We round out the month of fun with some culture with an exhibit at the SD Spady Museum on Northwest Fifth Avenue that is sure to delight. Spady will be exhibiting over 40 images from the Caribbean photo archive collection relating to the Bahamas. These photographs are from the 19th and 20th century. The images provide a look at what life was like for the inhabitants of Nassau during this era. For older generations the photographs provide a nostalgic look through the streets pictured in the photographs, where they can trace familiar paths they may have walked or visual reminders of people and places from their childhood memories, like the markets and sponge fleet. For younger generations, these images of Nassau may be a new and unfamiliar world view in which they may try to create an understanding of the past. The exhibition explores how the images created by early photographers may have influenced visual representations of the Bahamas even to this day. Spady Cultural Heritage museum is committed to the historical research of our early pioneers, some of whom migrated from the Bahamas. The exhibit allows the museum to make the connections between our pioneer’s early lives in the Bahamas and links to the professions, traditions and culture they brought with them to Delray Beach. Among the photographers featured in the exhibit are: Jacob Frank Coonley, William Henry Jackson, and O. Pierre Havens. Many of the sites and people in these photographs are still well known and widely identified with the Bahamas today including, The Queen’s staircase, Gregory’s Arch, Parliament buildings and the markets. March Madness is not limited to college basketball. Have fun on and off the avenue. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | March 2016 63

A great massage for athletes is a combination between hot stone and cold stone which will help to increase flexibility and range of motion. The Branding After Party By Maria Hofman

The biggest question on every savvy CEO, Chief Marketing Officer, and small business owner’s lips seems to be “what’s next?”

Every business owner has experienced the “so, what’s next?” moment at some point during their company’s lifetime. This question can have many authors and origins. It can stem from an organic internal marketing talk over a company lunch or—even worse—appear out of nowhere at the tail end of a creative process. This relentless thought can influence a company’s beliefs and its culture. It can also determine the direction of a product or service as

well as alter the trajectory of its success. So whether you’re working with a local freelancer, a national branding agency, an in-house creative team, an international PR firm, or a dedicated marketing company with world-wide reach, the “what’s next?” question is an absolute must-answer for companies looking to truly innovate and create something fresh and exciting for their loyal followers to consume. In March of this year, local Delray Beach

standout, OGK Creative, will be celebrating their fifth birthday; but before they illuminate the candles on their ridiculously big orange cake, they wanted to really take a step back and reflect on where they’ve been and —most of all—where they’re going. For those of you hiding under a rock that don’t know the guys and gals over at OGK Creative, they are a ridiculously talented branding, marketing, and interactive agency on the corner of Bronson and Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach. Their unique perspective—coupled with a highly collaborative approach to the creative process—is reflected both in their portfolio as well as their national client base, placing them high on the list of agencies to work for—and with. Candidly, OGK admits—as they inhale to blow out the flames on their number five candle in March—that their biggest weakness over the first few years of their existence was that awkward moment right after their clients approved all their exceptionally creative work and then uttered those two dreadful words. Now, any group worth their salt understands that the question—“what’s next?”—can feel like a swift punch to the sternum if you’re not prepared for it or, better yet, ahead of it. “What’s next?” had transformed itself into an internal question for OGK and became the driving force behind tremendous growth throughout all of 2014, spawning an entirely new concept for how to take control of their clients marketing needs and exactly how to integrate the big question into their daily creative process. Basically, they finally learned to ask themselves what everyone else had been asking of them and —most importantly—when to ask it. What was the next step in their creative process? How could they use their growing company and its expanding pool of talent to not only win the branding battle for their clients, but also help them win the next phase of the marketing and public relations struggle that seems to arise shortly thereafter? OGK’s conversations about the future were as broad as they were honest. The several topics discussed were real questions that needed solid answers; “how can we help our clients convert leads into growth? How can we really help our clients get noticed outside of the expected outlets like Facebook and other social media? How can we get our clients a real return on their marketing investments?” And the most critical question on our clients’ minds, “how can we get everyone to fall in love with our brand like we did?” OGK Creative wasn’t prepared to truly answer those questions back then. But over the next few years, alongside the major local and national brands they’re proud to have as clients and partners, they began meticulously laying the groundwork for the agency’s next big step in 2016. This summer, OGK Creative will officially launch its new division, (aptly named) “OGK Next.” This new marketing extension from the guys and gals in orange and black promises its partners unparalleled access to the agency’s vast internal and external resources for capitalization on both sides of the ball. And if you’re not into sports metaphors, all that means is that OGK Creative can now not only help you create a strong brand presence that will define your company and tell its story, but —with OGK Next— they can help market your brand to your audience and grow your business in a way that no one else in South Florida can.

Aguilera and Dr. Luis Soro. Both are masters at the latest techniques to seal in beauty and take years off your appearance. Their proprietary Frax-SculptSM treatment with Sculptra® Aesthetic is infused into their CO2 fractional laser treatment for optimized collagen production. The results are natural looking lifts and glowing baby skin. According to Dr. Soro this treatment can reverse sun damage, lines and wrinkles as well as tighten the skin by creating new collagen. “We have created new proprietary procedural techniques that will rejuvenate the face non-surgically with minimal down time. We specialize in anti-aging aesthetic medicine that enhances beauty that looks natural without looking overdone. When people leave here they feel great about themselves,” said Dr. Soro. Dr. Soro is a Board Certified DermatologistDermatologic Surgeon, who studied biology and chemistry at University of Pennsylvania and attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University. “I am focused on maximizing age reversal and restoring a youthful appearance without surgery. I customize treatments and modalities to get the best results,” said the Miami native. There are other life-altering treatments available at Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology, Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute. One of the most revolutionary is the Cellfina™ System. “This brand new, very effective, FDA approved minimally invasive treatment is the solution for cellulite. “Cellfina™ System is a device that uses a vacuum system to smooth out cellulite and take out the dimple that causes wrinkling of the skin in the thigh and buttocks area. Over 85 percent of all women have cellulite and it is not due to diet or lack of exercise, it is a structural issue. We are one of the first practices in Florida

Another way that Shino Bay helps patients feel good about themselves is the stateof-the-art NeoGraft hair transplant. This revolutionary hair transplant is painless, precise, leaves no scaring and is undetectable. It’s great for women and men, and there is little or no down time. The reason the institute offers the latest state-of-the-art non-surgical treatments for anti-aging is because Goren has his hand on the pulse of groundbreaking technologies for anti-aging. “We continue to invest in the best technologies available for optimal, customized age reversal, fat destruction and cosmetic enhancements,” said Goren, who is one of the top laser experts in the country. Their beautiful modern office attracts patients from around the world (as well as celebrities) who want to retain a youthful appearance indefinitely. Last year they tripled their office space to include 17 treatment rooms to keep up with the demand for their services. “From the talented doctors to the amazing staff, you will not find a better dermatology office in South Florida,” said one patient. Others agree. “I have maintained my youthfulness without going under the knife into my 50’s! Dr. Aguilera is a master at helping me look natural and not overdone,” adds Jayni. Both Dr. Aguilera and Dr. Soro are compassionate, highly skilled and understand that beauty can change lives and help make dreams come true.

DELRAY DENTAL The Dental Office By The Sea By Diane feen

Delray Beach is still a small town in some respects. We may have large restaurants and large appetites for big city life, but to some the charm of Delray is still its small town sentiment.

Nowhere is the small town feel more evident than at Delray Dental. This family friendly Dental practice has been in the same place for 36 years and is known for its familial roots ever since. Brothers Dr. John and Dr. Ted Ritota run the practice and their mother Dolores (and wives Lisa Kate and June Ellen) play an important role as well. This sense of family is carried on to the patients and the employees who work there. Most say that’s what makes them so happy. As dental assistant Luz Tamayo likes to say, “I feel like I’m part of the family. Everyone is so nice here.” The path to Delray Dental was quite different for Ainslie Sanchez. She started out as a part time assistant and liked her job so much that the Ritota brothers sent her to school to become a certified dental assistant. “I am so grateful to Dr. Ted and Dr. John for this opportunity. Everyone who works at Delray Dental is so nice.” It’s not just the employees who feel at home at Delray Dental, it’s also the paDr. TED at work

tients. “I had an emergency and was in terrible pain. I am so grateful to Dr. John and Dr. Ted for their quick work. The staff is friendly and courteous and could not be nicer. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this practice is. If I could give it 10 stars I would,” said Susan. Dr. Ted and Dr. John are dedicated dentists trained in all facets of dentistry from filling cavities to putting in crowns, doing root canals and tooth replacement. They also do bridges, veneers, teeth whitening, standard and mini-implants, bonding, dentures, oral surgery extractions, fillings, invisible braces, soft tissue management, denture relines and repairs.

Dr. John graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and is trained in all Dental Implant Systems. He was the reDr. John at work

cipient of the Van Cliburn Award (at age 12), has performed extensive TMJ Dental Research and enjoys making his patients (and their teeth) look perfect. Dr. Ted graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dentistry and has advanced training in all implant systems and completed surgical residencies for the placements of implants. Both Dr. John and Dr. Ted have appeared in “Guide to America’s Top Dentists” and have published in both the “Journal of Orofacial Pain” and “Dental Survey” Magazine. There’s another reason why people like Delray Dental. It’s because a crown can be made in one day with Cerec-D Technology. They also use the NV Microlaser for the treatment of soft tissue lesions and gum abscesses. Delray Dental also has an Endodontic System that cuts down the time it takes to do a root canal. “Our cordless Brasseler hand-piece has a light touch and clean technique that gets the work done quicker and gets the patient out of the chair faster. Our patients are really happy with the results,” said Dr. John. It seems Delray Dental has seen an increase in the demand for implants. “More people are coming into our office wanting to replace missing teeth. We’re combining the use of a mini implant with standard implants or we do them alone. Our goal is to create a perfect smile for our patients,” said Dr. Ted. The good news is that patients can have Cerec-D crowns done in one day, if necessary. “I had two job interviews and my crown fell. Delray Dental got me into the office ASAP and fixed it in perfect time. I’ve been going there for three years and they all do a great job,” said Adam. Delray Dental also sells Nussentials liquid vitamins and minerals. “We’ve had good results with patients using Nussentials to help heal gingivitis and low Vitamin D levels. They’re fast acting, have great absorption and help boost the immune system,” said Dr. John. Delray Dental exudes old fashioned gentility. “Our patients are our top priority. We provide the most comprehensive dental care possible, focusing on all areas of dental health. We make our patients experience as comfortable as possible. We are old fashioned in one way - We treat you as a special person, not a chart number.” Delray Dental 3401 S. Federal Highway Delray Beach (561) 272-6664 www.delraydental.com

Owner Jim Maddox, who has been in

the golf car industry for many years, took over in 1995 and has continued the tradition of providing an extensive array of golf cars and exceptional customer service. This local business has grown over the years by adding new golf cars, top-of-the-line accessories and parts. Street legal golf cars have also become the new phenomenon of the golf car industry and they are available to buy at Sunshine Golf Car. “Street legal golf cars have evolved over the last few years and have become very popular on the streets of Delray Beach. We have taken one more step to go into that market and it has grown in leaps and bounds,” said the owner, who has worked in the golf car industry for many years, for a manufacturer and with his own golf cart concession at local country clubs. “I saw that the industry was changing and there were few mechanics at clubs, so I thought it was a good opportunity to grow the business. In 2000, we expanded the business and have a store in Stuart as well. Our street legal golf cars are a big part of that expansion; many locals and snowbirds use their street legal golf car everyday. They can use them for a special occasion, and they can go just about anywhere in downtown Delray Beach on a golf car,” added Jim. What also sets Sunshine Golf Car apart from the rest, is their wide range of inventory of cars, parts & accessories, coupled with a full service repair mechanic shop on site. “We have a wide range of inventory that we stock from new and pre-owned cars, commercial type vehicles, recreational style, street legal vehicles, and accessories on site. We have something for everybody in our shop, with all different price ranges, sizes and we can tweak your golf car to your own liking,” said Jim. “Customer service is also a big thing for us. Coming from a mechanic background, service is very important; and we can fix your golf car with our on site service. Most companies do not offer service. We also keep a full inventory of parts in stock so that we can fix any golf car quickly so our customers get their cars back right away.” Sunshine Golf Car offers a mom and pop style service business with high quality products, accessories and the best golf cars around. “We look to make lasting relationships with our customers. Sunshine Golf Car has a family feeling among employees and our customers. We build long-term relationships and that’s why we have many customers who have been coming to us for many years,” said Jason. That’s why folks like Stephen from Delray Beach give it 11 stars. “Smoke Inn Delray has a knowledgeable helpful staff. You can go there and get immediate attention or walk into their humidor and get a great choice of cigars. Tell them your taste and they will satisfy it.” That seems to be the sentiment of Smoke Inn customers. Some smoke cigars with gusto in their favorite soft leather chairs, while others sit at the retro neon lit bar with their favorite scotch. Either way, it’s a place where cigars are celebrated and friendships are cemented. “We are the official cigar vendor at most of the special events in Delray Beach,” said owner Vincent Prestigiacomo. “We were at Garlic 76 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Smoke Inn Delray is a second home for many a cigar smoker. Their selection of cigars is legendary and their bar menu is extensive and connoisseur friendly.

Fest, The Wine and Seafood festival and we will have a lounge at the Delray Beach Bacon & Bourbon Festival on March 18th.” Not only will Smoke Inn have a presence at the Bacon & Bourbon Festival but they will be serving their signature drink to celebrate the occasion. Called the Bacon and Maple Smokey Old fashion, this drink will jive perfectly with its namesake and is made with real bacon and a host of other savory libations. But that’s only one of the exciting things coming up at Smoke Inn Delray Beach. They are hosting a Drew Estate Event on March 26 with live music by Joey Gilmore (a blues band) and fine Italian fare. Smoke Inn Delray is famous for their special events, which include an annual July 4th party and Super Bowl party with live music and food (often

made by Vinny’s mom). “We were rated the best cigar bar in Delray Beach and our business has increased as new people moved into the area. We are the exclusive cigar vendor for events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and we have a great clientele. Business has exceeded our expectations because we have created a special place for everyone,” said Vinny. Other exciting news at Smoke Inn Delray is the introduction of their newest Sindicato Cigar called Sindicato Miami. This Limited Edition cigar is the first Sindicato to be made in the US. It was blended by Arsenio Ramos and features 100 percent Nicaraguan tobacco from the farms of Eduardo Fernandez. They’re also welcoming a Limited Edition Cigar in their Microblend Series called The Pope of Greenwich Village. It was made ex-

clusively for Smoke Inn by Drew Estate, the maker of Liga Privada and ACID cigars. “The Pope of Greenwich Village a bold, full-flavored smoking experience designed for the cigar enthusiast. At 6” x 40, this panatela-sized smoke is the thinnest vitola in the Microblend collection. But, the small ring allows the cigar’s dark Mexican San Andrés wrapper to impart a hefty impact on the smoking experience.” Manager Manny Badillo is also bullish about their extensive selection of Caldwell cigars. “The Caldwell brand is a fast growing boutique cigar company. It’s also a new cigar for Smoke Inn and we are the only cigar bar in the area to carry it.” According to Caldwell their cigars are a social Conscientious company built by friends for friends. “We have labored to bring the finest quality product with great attention paid to every detail. Our special cigars use only the finest All-Grade-A tobaccos we can find. We are in this for our love of the leaf and our drive to share with you the fruits of our labor.” Smoke Inn Delray also rewards their customers with a Happy Hour from 5pm to 7pm with all Spirits half off. “We have happy hour Monday to Friday. It’s a great way to sit and enjoy a cocktail after work or on date night. We have live music on Fridays and Saturdays,” said Manny. Friday nights you can find local classic rock singer Bob McDonald on the patio holding court with his witty interactions with the band and the audience. Saturday night’s Anni Piper, Joey Gilmore and other Blues Bands make stake their musical claim outside on the patio. There are flat screen TV’s inside and outside for watching sporting events and a well stocked bar for schmoozing and smoking cigars. Vincent’s Son Luke Helping out

Also in ample supply are craft beers, wine, bourbon, cognac, Rye whiskey, Basil Hayden’s Whisky, Whistle Pig, Widow Jane and Angel Envy whiskey. On Thursday nights they have league poker tournaments, Wednesday night is Trivia Night (with free prizes, drinks and cigars). “The cigar business is a growing business because it’s become more acceptable to smoke a cigar in public. People come here from all backgrounds - it’s a great place to network or just relax and have a great time,” said Vinny. Al of Delray Beach agrees. “Smoke Inn Del-

Dr. Mylissa Graber is a highly respected Emergency Physician who was a Regional Medical Director in South Florida when she had an epiphany.

“I realized I could provide people with a friendly, beautiful healthcare environment with much faster care and more affordable prices than a hospital emergency room, with the same quality for minor Emergencies,” said Dr. Mylissa, a board certified Emergency Physician, who also opened a Boutique Medical Spa in Delray. You could say that the Graber family is medically rooted in South Florida. Her father is Dr. Benjamin Graber, a board-certified Gynecologist who has been practicing for over 30 years. Her sister Geneen is a pharmacist, who owns the pharmacy connected to the Urgent Care Center, and her mother Sandy is a PhD who does all the medical billing. But the big news is that Dr. Mylissa has made it easy and affordable to cure whatever ails you. The Urgent Care treats all non-life threatening illnesses or injuries without an appointment every day of the week. You also don’t have to wait. “Our

compassionate medical providers and personable staff are highly qualified to provide general urgent care services, occupational health services and physicals, as well as onsite services such as x-rays, labs, EKGs, IV fluids, and more.” To make it even more convenient they have an on-site pharmacy so you can leave with your prescriptions, eliminating the need for the long wait at a pharmacy. But that’s not all. The Urgent Care Center medical staff takes the time to arrange for you to be seen by a specialist if it is necessary or schedule you for tests such as MRI’s or CAT Scans when indicated. It’s a onestop-shop for all your medical needs. Dr. Mylissa also has an artful eye when it comes to beautification. That’s why she recently opened Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique next door to the Urgent Care Center.

This medically supervised spa offers client’s doctor-supervised diet programs with amazing results (you can lose up to 20 pounds or more in six to eight weeks). They also offer hormone replacement therapy, Cosmetic Procedures such as Dermal fillers, Botox, Laser hair removal, Facials, Collagen induction therapy, waxing, permanent makeup, Microdermabrasion, Tattoo Removal and more. “When it comes to cosmetic procedures it’s more of an art form than a science. Doctors perform the injections, not an assistant.” If you find you need gynecological care, you only have to walk a few feet because Dr. Ben has partnered with his daughter to provide full VIP gynecology services. dures, infertility testing and more. When it comes to your health needs Dr. G’s Urgent Care Center and Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique have everything you need to stay happy and healthy. “Our Urgent Care Center has been open for four years and we have grown by word of mouth. We see tourists on vacation who need medical treatment and snowbirds as well. You don’t have to wait long and we are very thorough. In fact, other urgent care centers refer patients to us because of the extensive treatment we provide.”

They also do breathing treatments, administer IV Medications, blood tests and treat illnesses from colds and flu to allergies, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, fractures and more. Most insurance plans are accepted and they have discounts for those without medical insurance (or who are out of network). They also do medical work for businesses that requires Pre-Employment Physicals, Drug testing and Workers Comp. You can also have School and Sports physicals, Camp physicals, pregnancy tests, and lab tests. Dr. Mylissa spent over fifteen years working as an Emergency physician in South Florida and understands the needs of patients, no matter how young or old. She enjoyed the excitement of the ER and developed a compassion and understanding for her patients (and the constraints of large hospitals and medical offices). “There is no reason to wait weeks to see your primary care physician or spend countless hours (and thousands of dollars) to go to the emergency room for non-life threatening conditions. At Dr. G’s Urgent Care Center you don’t need an appointment and

you’ll be seen within minutes, not hours.” Not only will you see a medical provider with over 15 years experience, but you’ll be treated with dignity and TLC.

Sometimes we need a little encouragement on our journey in life... whether it be a push to take the first step to make dreams become reality or making a substantial change toward a better life.

Gary Greenberg, Self Motivational Speaker

The voice of inspiration can be heard clearly with “Self Motivational Speaker” Gary Greenberg who encourages each individual in all phases of self improvement. For it is “We The People” who have the responsibility first and foremost to lift ourselves up step by step on the ladder of selfimprovement and to climb each rung to that mountaintop of potential, achievement and success. As we improve ourselves, we pass forward a linking of inspiration. Known as the Self Motivational Speaker for Main Street, Gary focuses on inspiring individuals in making a plan to pursue their 80 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

passion and begin to become the person they were meant to be. Gary presents his “Motivational Mastery” series on WRPBiTV.com with topics such as “Carpe Diem-Seize The Day”, “Planned Boldness” and “Making Friends with your Fears”. His monthly “Self Motivational Talk” at the Hilton in Boca Raton is encouraging, electrifying and thought-provoking. With more than 30 years of entrepreneurial and sales expertise, Gary has a track record of teaching self motivation to others through his seminars within the fabric of the corporate world.Gary has been a single par-

ent for the last eight years to his son Evan. Moving to South Florida from New York to be closer to his family and after enjoying the semi-retired life, he realized something was still missing from within. One night he had an epiphany that he wanted to be a Motivational Speaker for the general public, not for Wall Street, but for Main Street, not for the 1% but for the 99%. Gary has always been a very ambitious person and felt he had a destiny within himself to do something special....To become the person he was meant to be. “We all have greatness in us and we are all born with a uniqueness. Each of us must apply our gift and take that passion out to the world,” said Gary. Once he discovered his greater calling, Gary started studying the “greats” throughout history such as Da Vinci, Napolean, Lincoln, Edison, Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. His first “Talk” focused on “Begin Now to become the person you were meant to be”....Another “Talk” encouraged attendees to follow the 3 P’s of Possibility: Passion, Persistence and Patience. Emails and phone calls were received in abundance revealing each person’s inspiration to move forward on the road of self improvement. One woman said she decided to finally follow her dream of becoming a nurse after attending one of Gary’s self-motivational talks. This local Self-Motivational Speaker has a long term goal of creating a Self Motivational Mastery Group which will create a movement to help Main Street, the Middle Class,

the 99% to move forward on a daily basis of Self-Motivation. There is an energy created from everybody sharing what they do, their passions, their challenges, their successes and he is creating something that has yet to be done in the field of Self-Motivation. Gary’s vision is to inspire as many people as possible. He is in the business of helping people help themselves. His goal is to create a Self-Motivational Movement. Gary finds it very rewarding being able to challenge individuals to step out of their comfort zone and enter the zone of the unknown. All great things happen when you take risks. Become bold and find your courage. Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid. “That is what I have done and life has become one great adventure,” said Gary. “Do not be a prisoner of your past, instead become the architect of your future!” Gary Greenberg www.garymotivates.com garyg114@aol.com 516-851-2656

The moment you lay eyes on the living walls and Biophilic design creations of Jeffrey Allis, you feel a sense of enchantment and your mood is instantly brightened.

“Biophilia” means “The Love Of Life.” It is the instinctive bond between human beings and nature. This strong intuitive affiliation with nature has empirical evidence that our environment shapes our feelings and has a positive impact on us. The simplicity and sophistication of nature are the very essence

which affect our psychological well-being. Biophilic Design is the universal language of transforming our urban spaces by merging nature and architecture, correctly framing views and creating enchanted gardens. This creative and transformative design theory is looking with new eyes at our current

urban environment with the positive goal of harmonizing architecture, nature and humanity. This beneficial contact with nature brings our outdoor living and working spaces to life and has a positive economic and physiological benefit. “Humans have an innate relationship with nature and plants, and with technology they are losing a connection with nature. I am trying to bring nature back into their life,” says the biophilic designer and horticulturist. Jeffrey Allis, owner of Tru Vine Design, designs feature gardens, patios, courtyards, and much more. Well known for being intuitive at creating unique living walls, many have over 1,000 subtropical plants. He is a biophilic designer for both residential and commercial. His inspiration comes from his travels to Europe, Central and South America, and especially, Panama, Colombia, Brazil and Nicaragua. There while visiting botanical gardens and jungles, he discovers unique forms of Biomimicry and brings those concepts back to South Florida. He has personally de-

signed and worked with numerous clients in Delray Beach, such as the Buddha Sky Bar, Spodak Dental and many more, along with being very busy in Miami Beach. “My passion for plants and gardens began in the large country vegetable garden I created when I was 13. I was fortunate that my family owned one of the premier tropical greenhouses that specialized in interior tropical landscaping. I was blessed to be exposed to bringing nature into people’s environments,” exclaimed Jeffrey. Throughout the years, Jeffrey has continued his passion for gardens and nature, while also working for 20 years in the financial business as a member of the Chicago Board of Trade as a US Bond Options Trader and as an Associate Director at Bear Stearns Company. His philanthropic endeavors led him to chairing a Fine Arts Museum and a Decorative Arts and Garden Museum. But it was when he first saw a vertical green wall in South Florida that he began to research Biophilic design. “I had an epiphany. I knew this was what I wanted to do. That was five years ago and since then I have been fiercely independent with self study on what works best with green walls,” added Jeffrey. Beside his love of all things natural, Jeffrey Allis pours his unwavering faith into each of his creations. The name of his business is Tru Vine Design, which is from the Bible, John 15-1, “I am the True Vine (Jesus Christ), and God is the Gardener.” Jeffrey also takes the time to meet with each of his clients and make sure each project is personal to them. “This is my passion,” says Jeffrey. With that, everything else just seems to fall into place. His ultimate goal is to create a healing garden for children and families in hospice care. “I hope to create this peaceful place for families to go and transcend.” Tru Vine Design 262-325-7300 jeffreypallis@gmail.com http://truvinedesign.com/

Savor the Bacon Parade BY STEPHEN CHRISANTHUS

{

Would you like to reserve a table in the middle of the road and consume copious amounts of your favorite pink, four legged, curly tailed friend while drinking bourbon and wearing a green shirt… Well than this March you are in luck.

Now while you can’t do all of those things simultaneously you can attend 3 of Delray Beach’s most anticipated events of the year to experience each one. March is home to Savor the Avenue, Bacon and Bourbon Fest and The Delray Beach Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival. These diverse and fun filled events are favorites of locals and visitors alike, and are unique to Delray Beach. Who says it’s hard to get a table on Atlantic Avenue during Season? Savor the Avenue enables you to dine right in the middle of the actual road on one of the nation’s longest dining tables. The City’s top restaurants creatively decorate the table and serve their own four course dinners paired with complimentary wines. “For bragging rights and competitive spirit, the city has a table decor contest between all the restaurants. It’s pretty cool not only for the judges but for guests and spectators to walk the Ave, check out each table, make mental notes and judge for themselves. I mean, who doesn’t love to judge just a little,” explains Kyle Gonzales, Di-

rector of Marketing for Salt7 which was last year’s winner. This year’s participating restaurants include: Tryst, 32 East, Cabana El Ray, Salt 7, Rocco’s Tacos, The Fat Rooster, and plenty more. So come out and park yourself in a seat on the Ave and enjoy the feast. If you’re looking to get hog wild then make your way out the 2nd Annual Bacon and Bourbon Fest where you can indulge in over 80 bacon inspired menu items, along with great live music, and a collection of over 40 bourbons and whiskeys. It’s a two day affair so those hedonistic swine that just can’t get enough can always go back for seconds. The Fest also offers Bacon and Bourbon Pairing Seminars and two exclusive Pappy Van Winkle tastings. There will be a full bar, wines and Heineken Light too. This boar bash is not one to miss! Nothing fun to do March 12th, home feel-

ing blue? Throw on anything green and head out to Delray Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, the premier St. Patty’s Parade of the southeast. Show your support to the dedicated men and women of emergency services while enjoying a green beer at your favorite spot on the Avenue. This year more than 60 World War II veterans will lead the parade, the largest such gathering of its kind. The people watching will be great and the energy will be electric. Everybody likes a parade, so don’t miss the biggest one of the year. So throw on that green shirt, don’t be afraid to be a porker and yes this time please feel free to take a seat and hold up traffic on Atlantic Avenue because this March we are going to Savor the Bacon Parade. Big Ideas Announced for Congress Avenue By Linda brown

{

This month, a citizen task force will present an ambitious vision to transform Congress Avenue into Delray Beach’s “next great street.”

The task force, chaired by former mayor Jeff Perlman and consisting of property owners, residents, engineers, transportation planners and real estate professionals spent the better part of 2015 meeting, brainstorming, planning and envisioning a vibrant mixed use corridor that will grow the city’s tax base, add jobs, beautify and provide a housing options for young professionals. Atlantic Ave Magazine takes a look at the five “big ideas” the task five will present to City Commissioners in March. Complete Streets - according to Smart Growth America “Complete Streets” are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. The task force is recommending that Congress be converted into a complete street to change the look and feel of the corridor from a fast moving non-descript road into an attractive street. Delray has had enormous success redeveloping Atlantic Avenue, Pineapple Grove, US 1 and Northwest/Southwest Fifth Avenue by changing the physical look and feel of those streets. The task force felt the Congress Avenue was ripe for similar treatment including design that will increase safety and add beautification and pedestrian elements. A Catalyst Project - another key idea is to find and support a catalytic project to jumpstart Congress and get investors and the public to rethink the corridor’s possibilities. The term the task force used was transit oriented development, a phrase 90 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

used to describe a project that has a mix of uses and also includes a transportation component like Tri-Rail. Possibilities include rethinking the County government buildings (which includes a Tri-Rail stop) and the former Office Depot headquarters which has been vacant for over a decade and has more than 40 acres and a sea of parking to work with. Place Making - a key component of success includes beautification and turning the corridor from a bland wasteland into an attractive place with linear parks, public plazas, attractive landscaping etc. The task force believes the corridor can become an attractive place for young professionals but in order for that to happen it has to be attractive and offer a range of activities and amenities. Currently there are few shopping and dining options. Fast Track Approval Process - the task force is strongly recommending an

easy, predictable and fast approval process. This would be a stark contrast to the long, unpredictable maze like process that has bedeviled downtown projects. Offering investors a friction free predictable process is a must task force members agree. A connection to Atlantic Ave - task force members surveyed property owners and almost all said that Delray’s brand is inextricably connected to Atlantic Avenue’s remarkable success. As a result, efforts must be made to connect to Downtown whether it’s via branding that talks about proximity to Atlantic Avenue or transit options that get people back and forth from Congress to Atlantic. The task force report contains dozens of ideas beyond these five. The report will be available via the city’s website this month. Visit www.mydelraybeach.com and look for the Office of Economic Development tab for more information.

Getting There From Here

{

By john davis, lmhc

A rising chief marketing executive for an international technology firm contacted me. It seems he’d gotten promotions and awards for years, but his momentum had stalled and he was in danger of being passed over.

An informal “360 degree” assessment revealed that colleagues complained he didn’t listen. “Every meeting provides a platform for his ego”, one main supplier said. Another direct report found him off-putting. “He always has to be the smartest guy in the room, “ she said, “and when our team succeeds he takes the credit.” The CEO of a partner organization who had clearly had enough just wished he would “grow up”. A young lawyer (also a mom) sought my help. Healthy, strong, attractive and articulate, she had married a man who, like herself had been married before. They both had children from previous relationships. Their blended

family was two years old, and they were suffering. Never happy. Frequent quarrels, pervasive mistrust, punishing language over the heads of children. There were suspicions of infidelity. Both had successful professional careers, and yet, among other complaints there wasn’t enough money for groceries and gas each week. What’s the common thread? Of course, there’s overlap. In both cases, our main characters were the complainant. In each, there was blindness to both the root and real size of the problem. They were alike because “symptoms” masqueraded as possible causes. (For example, the problem wasn’t disrespectful

children. Or colleagues who didn’t get it.) Critically both of these people had long refused to accept their own responsibility for failures they’d been part of. A lot of unhappy people find me. Of course, that’s the implicit invitation of the “shingle” that I hang: executive coach, counselor, therapist, guide. Having someone to confide in and trust can raise our awareness and bring about wise choices that curtail needless suffering... and facilitate happiness. Pre-requisite? We must see the world as it really is, and not how we wish it to be. And we must see ourselves clearly, including our blind spots and accept our responsibility for change. Author and consultant Marshall Goldsmith states: “what got you here won’t get you there”, in his similarly titled book. He points out that it’s possible to succeed with certain skills and preferences early in life. At some point you’ve gotta change. Explicitly, he challenges us to look in the mirror and recognize destructive behaviors that hold us back. Great confidence is essential in a new sales career. Arrogance is unforgivable in the executive suite. In marriage, no less. Rugged independence is sexy and attractive at first. As marriage matures, we need the skills of intimacy to learn to depend upon each other. An ancient Buddhist text, sometimes attributed to Lao Tzu says: “If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself, if you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.” If you’ve been trying to get a handle on these or similar issues, contact me for a consultation. Lawyer, Father, Defender Of Rights

JEFFREY LYNNE By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

To say that Jeffrey Lynne is a multi-faceted fellow is to minimize his accomplishments. The Delray Beach lawyer and father of two has done more in his 44 years than most people will do in two lifetimes.

But when you talk to Lynne you get the feeling he doesn’t know how to exist in any other manner. “Only through change can we progress as a society and reach our potential. If you care about something bigger than yourself you can fix anything,” said the Miami native who graduated with honors from University of Miami School of Law. Change and justice are just a few of the things that motivate Lynne. His family history tells the rest of the story. “My grandfather David was a lawyer and my grandmother was an opera singer who went to Julliard. When I was a kid I hung out with people like Baryshnikov and Jessica Lang,” said the grandson of Judith Drucker, a legendary arts publicist and cultural matron in Miami. Not only was Lynne’s grandfather a lawyer, but so were his father Robert and great uncle. But when it came time for him to choose a profession they weren’t cheering him on to follow in the family business. “When I graduated college everyone in my family said, ‘don’t go to law school, it’s a difficult profession if you want to find meaning in your life.’” But they were wrong. Lynne did go into law and he did find meaning in his life – perhaps more than many of his peers. “I learned that we create our own reality and nothing in life should ever keep us down. I feel strongly that a city without a sense of community is just a place to sleep.” That strong sense of community is what has propelled Lynne to join so many organizations and become so involved in the community he inhabits. He’s a member of American Health Lawyers Association, National Association of Japan American Societies, Southeast United States/Japan Association and Urban Land Institute. He’s also a board member of Delray Chamber of Commerce, Delray Drug Task Force, Shotokan Karate Center, Sister Cities of Delray and others.

March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Lynne is also well known for his work with the Substance Use Disorder treatment industry. Though it’s been a controversial subject he has not shied away from its existence and ramifications. “I am passionate about honest conversation about things affecting society and finding solutions to them,” said Lynne who has been married to Michelle for 15 years. Aside from his legal work that focuses on land use and zoning law in Delray Beach, Lynne was previously a criminal prosecutor in Miami, Assistant City Attorney in Boca Raton, and a lawyer- partner at Akerman in Ft. Lauderdale. Those around him marvel at Lynne’s determination and brilliance. “Jeffrey cares not just about his family and friends, but also for the greater good of the world around him. If an issue has risen to the point that Jeffery has become passionate about it, you should listen, because it is likely going to be something that is going to impact the world around us for years to come,” said Terra Spero. Spero is right. Lynne was adamant that cities have bicycle lanes on A1A, especially in Palm Beach County. The results were pretty impressive. “I fought for the right of bicyclists and motorists to peacefully co-exist on Delray’s A1A. We got the state law changed to integrate cyclists on all of Florida’s roadways.” As part of his consciousness of well-being Lynne has been an advocate for sustainable energy. He has written and lectured on how to meet sustainable development strategies and is recognized by the US Green Building Council as a Leader in the Energy and Environmental Design Accreditation. Another of Lynne’s passions is Japanese culture and martial arts. He has a Black Belt in Shotokan Karate and was instrumental in bringing the Japanese

Karate Association’s National Karate Championship and Training Camp to Delray. As part of the Sister City program Lynne will be traveling to Miyazu, Japan with students from Atlantic High School this June. This has allowed Lynne to understand other cultures and hone life lessons. “Your first reaction when you meet someone can be love, not fear. If we do that then the world would be a better place.” Suzanne Spencer, of Delray Drug Task Force has seen Lynne do just that. “Jeffrey brilliantly finds a balance between heart and head, legal and ethics and rights and responsibility toward building integrated communities.” One community that he holds near and dear to his heart is the Morikami Museum. Lynne and his wife have been very active at this historic landmark. “To me it represents a sanctuary of tranquility and peace where I can recharge my batteries.” Lynne has also been recognized by MartindaleHubbell as being “AV-Preeminent” every year since 2005. Aside from all his accomplishments Lynne is a family man who takes great joy in fatherhood. “My son Jonah was named after my grandfather Jack and the biblical prophet. Jonah’s legacy reminds us to acknowledge and follow our destiny and let go of what we cannot control. My other son, nine-year-old Benjamin goes by his middle name Isaac. His name is a daily reminder that my job is to make both boys contributors to the betterment of the world.” Lynne does not advocate for others what he himself does not practice. He gives back to the community and balances acts of kindness with the daily rigors of business. “There is a reason why ‘love by neighbor’ is one of the Ten Commandments. My professional legacy is to ensure that we solve this problem. It’s not about me it’s about contributing what I can to the community.” So far, it seems he is succeeding with this lofty goal. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | March 2016

OFF THE AVE A Hot Spot That Embraces It’s Patrons By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

When Robin Murphy moved from Charlotte, North Carolina to Delray Beach she found solace and culinary comfort at Off The Ave.

Rueben served on hearth rye with homemade potato salad

114 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

She not only enjoyed their Chicken Philly Sandwiches and burgers, but the friendly vibe at OTA (as she calls it) permeated the presence. “Off The Ave was one of the first places I came when I moved to Delray. They welcomed me with open arms and made me part of the family. They even introduced me to new people,” said the IT Consultant. There are a lot of people who feel the same way as Murphy. They come for the comfort food and the comfort. The bartenders are legendary for being friendly and hip, and the food will seal the deal for simplicity with a dose of tasty accents. Their new Asian Burger is typical of OTA’s approach to mixing up the recipes and creating something a bit more exciting than the norm. This Burger comes with Asian spices, fresh cilantro, homemade slaw mix and Siracha Mayo Sauce drizzled on top. “We are well known for our Burgers,” said co-owner Adam Knoblock. “We use 8 ounces of Angus beef and we cook it so it’s tasty and very juicy – everyone loves them.” They sure do. “I was told that Off the Ave is

the best burger restaurant in Delray Beach. They were right! We sat outside and had burgers and wine. The waitress was friendly and it was a great casual dining experience. If you want a great burger in the heart of Delray, Off The Ave is your best bet,” said Michele. In reverence for the OTA Burger, Adam has created a few derivations on the Burger theme. There is the Cuban Burger made with Angus Beef, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, Mustard and Mayo. Also check out one of the most popular new Burgers, the French Dip Burger. This juicy dish is served with Bourbon braised onions, creamy horse radish sauce, Swiss cheese and is served with Au Jus on the side for dipping. Another popular theme at OTA is their salads made fresh to order (no wilted lettuce here). They include a Chopped Salad with fresh romaine topped with grape tomatoes, red onion, black olives and imported parmesan cheese. Add chicken, ham or turkey to this salad and you have a complete meal. You also have a choice of grilled or blackened chicken with any salad, which includes a Caesar Salad, Classic Caprese or Greek Salad. Another thing that has evolved at Off The Ave are their sandwiches and Subs served with homemade slaw or chips. The chicken sandwich is a popular favorite and can be made as a wrap or on fresh Challah bread, Deck bun, Artisan Rye bread or Focaccia. Add lettuce, tomato, green pepper, red onion, seasoned olive oil and cheese and you have a hefty combination of proteins and carbs that Dr. Oz would say is a go. OTA French Dip is legendary for their Premium Roast Beef on a pan- roasted bun with house made Au Jus. You can also add Swiss or Provolone cheese to your French dip. Another favorite is the Philly Cheese Steak. Served with sliced Rib-Eye Steak, mushrooms, onion, bell peppers, provolone, mayo or mustard it’s what rings a cord of authen-

ticity with many (including us). One of their newest sandwiches is a Gyro made with fresh lamb, homemade Tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato, and red onion in a fresh pita wrap. If you have a craving for something your Italian grandmother might make try the Meatball Sandwich with marinara and mozzarella cheese on a pan roasted bun. To compliment your sandwich try their homemade potato salad, endorphin rush beer battered onion rings or sweet potato fries. Dan did, and this is what he had to say about it. “I dropped in for lunch at OTA and had their Italian sandwich. Wow! It was beautifully made and wonderfully fresh! The bread was artisan and fresh and the meat was all top-notch. The veggies are fresh and full of flavor. That kind of attention to detail makes me feel like the people here are really watching out for their customers.” Dan is right, Adam is keenly aware of his customers’ needs and how he can improve their dining experience. “We buy our bread fresh everyday our meats are good quality. We make homemade potato salad with celery, onions, eggs and Dijon mustard and our

Turkey sandwich served on focaccia with kettle cooked chips

sandwiches are made to order with love.” There’s another facet to this hometown eatery. They have Happy Hour weekdays from 3 to 7pm and offer half price appetizers and drink specials. One of those appetizers might be meatballs in a marinara sauce with melted mozzarella cheese. They have a full bar with 14 rotating Draft Beers (Domestic and Craft). You might find a Hop Gun by local Funky Buddha or an Amber beer like Fat Tire. They also have wine. Adam likes to mix things up a bit so everyone is happy. “We really enjoy serving locals and those who come here for vacation. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and everyone is pretty easy going,” said Adam. Murphy already knows that – it’s the reason she continues to call OTA her second home in Delray. “When my friends come in from out of town we always make OTA our first stop. I love it there.” Off the Ave 19 SE 5th Ave., Delray Beach, FL 561- 450-6768 offtheavedelray.com Off the Ave is open every day

Pain in Pets?

W

e are often asked about pain in pets from our clients and how they should handle it. This is a very tough situation as there are minimal signs that we can use as a standard. Unfortunately, pets and humans do not have a universal language. It simply comes down to making the best educated guess. Yes, there are some signs that suggest specific pain. Limping may indicate an injury or joint pain and difficulty chewing or eating may indicate dental pain. Snapping and yelping upon touch in specific areas may indicate a trauma. Now the REAL question to ask is whether pain medications are appropriate or even the solution? Most pet owners rely solely on their veterinarian’s advice. In some situations this is a necessity, however the type of criteria veterinarians use to evaluate the pain and the prescribed remedy should always be questioned. Very often pharmaceutical drugs are recommended for joint issues, post-medical procedures, accidents, injuries or even cancer. This can result in masking the pain, creating unnecessary side effects and other health challenges. This type of protocol does not address the most important issue here and that is the SOURCE of the pain. Are the drugs really necessary and do they contribute to the healing process? Are they masking pain and enabling

the pet to continue normal activities without allowing the healing process? Ultimately, the goal should be to assist recovery of our pet to a healthy state and not just mask a symptom. Unfortunately, many veterinarians focus on the symptom and not the underlying cause, therefore we see little long lasting healing. We unfortunately see many pets that have been prescribed pain medications on a chronic basis which often have lead to other health challenges such as liver and kidney issues. Pain medications inhibit true healing by their design and also trick the body into stressing the injured area more so because of no pain. A good example is injured athletes being administered pain moderating medications and resuming the same activity only to further the injury or damage. This happens frequently in pets as well. Can your veterinarian track the damage? Duration of this treatment should also be addressed. In reality, pain medications, like all pharmaceuticals should be limited in their use and duration. The body is designed to heal itself, to regenerate and it is our responsibility to provide it with the tools it needs. Thus, a proper diet of species appropriate foods, herbs and botanicals will promote the body’s healing powers in a most natural way. YOUR pet’s body requires food to build the immune system, pro-

mote proper growth of cells and tissue, detoxify and cleanse in order to prevent further damage. A solution may not be as complex as what your veterinarian may propose but may be as simple as reaching out to other alternatives to determine the source and treatment without the quick solution of drugs. Pet parents may not be trained professionals but are the most familiar with their pets. Use common sense, observe and jot down events to supply vital information for a proper assessment. You will realize that even the strong and mighty pet health professional may need a little help and guidance from some other source… it’s time to take charge of your pet’s health and well-being. The next time you are faced with a pet in pain and a pharmaceutical drug is prescribed, be sure to ask yourself…does my pet REALLY need this?? By keeping natural functions in mind, your pets will stay healthy and balanced through all the seasons. He Said/She Said:

Its March Madness!!! By Robert V and Marie T

{

Spring is here! Yay! March is a great month to dive head first into the dating scene. With no holiday or family pressures, you can relax and make better swiping/winking/poking choices.

He Said

Now that the dreaded “V-day” has come and gone and we have survived, it’s time to look ahead. After all, hope does “Spring” eternal. So, my fellow singletons, here are some dating ideas for the spring time. Join the gym (again). We won’t have that extra layer of clothing to cloak our holiday pounds, soon. If we know that, women certainly know that, and are serious about getting back into “dating shape”. Now, being somewhat of a gym rat, I am not a big proponent of approaching people in the gym. Consider this a seasonal exception to the rule. Use your commonality to spark conversation. A word of caution, women feel very vulnerable in this “jewelry and makeup free, spandex wearing” zone, so be complimentary and don’t ogle. Dust off your bike and send it in for a tune-up. Bike riding clubs are everywhere and they are the perfect social setting to strike up conversation. Think trying to get anywhere in the weekend when 2,000 bikes whiz by you on A1A and make you inevitably late for wherever you are supposed to be. It’s the “Horn-Of Plenty” for a single. Just be sure to guard against chaffing. Volunteer. That’s right, altruism is sexy and just plain good for the soul. Volunteering for a good cause can get you to events that other, like-minded singles attend as well. There is no more innocuous environment than planting trees to save kittens side-by side with the hottie who lives down the block.

She Said

I love the month of March in Florida! The weather is not too hot, it’s sunny, and there 130 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

are lots of new ways to meet singles. Here are some ways I will attempt to make new friends. March Madness! I will admit that although I am a sporty chick, I am not into college leagues. However March Madness is where I make an exception! Basketball is always a fun game to watch, so grab some friends, check the game schedule and head on over to a local bar and start cheering! Join a Club! Yes, I said it. Joining a club is a low pressure way to meet people with a common interest. Meetup.com makes it very easy to search for a local social club to meet people. An easy alternative to dating sites. There are clubs for EVERYTHING! Yoga, dog lover, coffee drinkers, paddle boarders, etc... So if you find yourself sitting at home binge

watching 90s sitcom reruns know that you could have taken your dog for coffee after sunrise paddle board yoga with some new friends! Green EVERYTHING! And last but not least, let’s not forget one of the most fun holidays of the year - St. Patrick’s Day! Everyone is Irish on March 17th, so make sure you have a funny t-shirt and some goofy socks, glasses, boas, beads, hats, and headbands and go watch a local parade in any and EVERY city in Florida! Delray Beach has THE BEST parade so get to the Ave early and claim your spot on the route or better yet - reserve a table with a view at one of the many restaurants. Decide before you go who is the Designated Driver (Uber is a perfect solution) and have a blast!

Silent Heroes Built the Village

{

“This is my badge. There are many like it but this one is mine. This badge is special. It represents justice. It represents commitment. It represents service. It represents pride and it represents sacrifice. I have worn this badge for many years.”

“Today, I will wear this badge, my badge for the last time. I will receive a new badge. My new badge will have the word “Retired” engraved on it. I will carry my new badge with pride, but it will never fully replace this badge, my badge. God bless the men and women of the Delray Beach Police Department. I will miss you all.” Lt. Toby Rubin on his Facebook page. Last month, my friend Toby Rubin retired from the Delray Beach Police Department. My guess is that many of you don’t know his name. But you should. Because he and others like him are important contributors to Delray Beach. Toby rose through the ranks from officer to lieutenant in a stellar 30 year career, but when history books are written most likely Toby’s name won’t be included. That’s a shame, because men and women like Toby who serve in our Police Department and elsewhere in city government don’t get the credit they deserve for what they do day in and day out. They built this town. Lt. Rubin didn’t get rich serving our city. He does have a decent pension to go along with aches and pains that come from a hard life spent protecting and serving our city. Delray Beach is not an easy place to be a police officer. Or a firefighter. Or these days—a planner or a parks maintenance employee—pick your job. You pick up a newspaper and you read about public pensions destroying municipal budgets. You open your email or visit social media to share good news and find a diatribe about government and government workers. But I know a different story. I saw a different side to the argument. Oh, I won’t pretend that bad government employees don’t exist—they do. A few exist in the upper echelons—suits who manage 134 March 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

to whine about problems but offer no fixes other than cut, cut, cut. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. They always look down, backwards and elsewhere when they ought to be looking in a mirror to see waste up close. But I saw the other side. I worked alongside people who got things done. Delray Beach didn’t happen by accident. The downtown didn’t magically transform from blight and grime to vibrant and safe. Neighborhoods didn’t just miraculously clean themselves up and your $120,000 house didn’t increase to $500,000 or in some cases to over $1 million because some selfimportant politician or self-anointed citizen watchdog remade your crime and drug infested village into a place where you can take a golf cart and visit 130 restaurants, attend festivals and see free Friday night concerts at Old School Square. It took vision. And it took money. It took guts. And it took years. It took hard work. And it required collaboration, dialogue, passion, patience, optimism and team work. And it took guys like Toby Rubin. I used to ride with Toby in the late 80s and early 90s when he was a member the “Tact Team.” The drug dealers called them the “jump out” crew because they rode in big black SUV’s through drug and crime infested neighborhoods and jumped out to arrest people selling narcotics on almost every corner. We were mere blocks from the beach and the downtown, which was mostly dead back in those days. I rode with some legendary cops: Mike Swigert, Chuck Jeroloman, Don West, Alan Thompson, Jeff Rancour, the late Johnny Pun and a very young Jeff Goldman, who is now our chief. I saw Delray through their eyes and many

others in the department. Most of these names, the general public will never know. But they make the city safe. And without safety there is no community. There would be nothing to argue about, because iPic wouldn’t want to be here and neither would anybody else. There is no investment, there is no appreciation of property values and there is no quality of life without people like Toby Rubin. All of those people I mentioned and hundreds more cared about Delray and took great pride in what they were building here. They knew they working on something special—as does the parks worker, the planner, the people in utility billing and the really nice people in the City Clerk’s Office and throughout city government. We have done a lot in this country to denigrate public servants and public service. It’s wrong. We fixate on what it costs to have a Police Department and a Fire Department, to have a cultural center and a library. Yes, we need to demand good services delivered efficiently and professionally. Accountability is a good thing, but we also need to make room for gratitude and we ought to take some time to consider the benefits, not just their costs. That’s actually a good approach to everything.
