Welcome to the May edition of Atlantic Ave Magazine
pring is well under way in our beautiful city and we wish all of our reader’s a Happy Mother’s Day. This month, you’ll read our usual array of stories that should give you plenty of ideas to treat your Mom. We happen to believe that Mother’s Day is just one day out of 365 that we should honor our Moms and the special women in our lives. As you search for ideas and inspiration in these pages, we hope you will consider supporting our advertisers who offer an array of services, goods and accommodations sure to delight even the most discriminating mom. In honor of Mother’s Day, this seems a good time to point out some very special women doing remarkable work in Delray Beach. Nancy Stewart-Franczak is no stranger to those of us who have been following Delray’s cultural evolution over the years. Her festivals—which include The Garlic Fest, the new Bacon & Bourbon Festival and the recently produced Chamber event the signature Delray Affair have left an indelible mark bringing literally hundreds of thousands of people to our city over the years. Those of us who know Nancy know how hard she works, but she’s always there to lend a hand when needed and lives and breathes Delray Beach. Melissa Carter is another hard working unsung heroine in our city, handling the marketing and PR for the Delray Center for the Arts remarkably well. We are not sure when Melissa rests, because so much is always happening on the square and she does a wonderful job keeping us informed and letting everybody know what’s going on. Lori Nolan is also one of the hardest working people I know. Her stewardship of the CRA Green Market has been nothing short of terrific. As a result, our market is the place to be on Saturday mornings. The market is not only a good social venue, but it incubates new businesses as well. Thanks, Lori! Terra Spero is one of our favorite Delray entrepreneurs. Her Real Time Marketing Company quietly drives a ton of traffic to great events and causes in Delray. Speaking of causes, activities and events, there are few that escape the involvement of Kelli Freeman who is a wonderful ambassador for Delray Beach. Four other great ambassadors are the incomparable Stephanie Immelman, Patty Reed, Sue Tauriello and Chamber President Karen Granger. Always smiling, always positive and always busy doing good things. There are so many more—stay tuned Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Jeff Perlman, Editor

On Wednesday, April 1, more than 200 volunteers from The Home Depot’s Décor Department and their vendor partners joined local store associates and volunteers from Habitat at Vetsville Ceasefire House. Caffe Luna Rosa, recently named Restaurant of the Year by the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce and winner of the third annual Best Bite on the Ave competition at Crane’s Beach House Boutique Hotel & Luxury Villas, is now offering several new “health eating / healthy living” options. “At Caffe Luna Rosa we’re always striving to offer our customers a better quality product,” says Executive Chef Ernie DeBlasi. “We like to leave options available for people to make their own healthy choices. But the more we have to offer, the better that makes us. It’s also the right thing to do.” Eggland’s Best Cage-Free Eggs Chef Earnie, whose kitchen uses about 500 to 600 eggs a day, says the decision to switch from regular Eggland’s Best Eggs to Eggland’s Best Cage-Free Eggs was driven by a desire to provide customers with an egg that is healthier and more nutritious. Eggland’s Best Cage-Free Eggs are lower in cholesterol, have fewer calories and are much higher in vitamins B, D and E than traditional eggs. Produced locally throughout the United States, Eggland’s Best eggs are typically delivered within 72 hours of 3/18/15 10:28 AM

laying, ensuring a farm-fresh taste in every single one. “It’s a healthier egg,” DeBlasi adds. “As the restaurant that serves the most eggs per seat than any other restaurant in Delray Beach, we want to set a precedent that lets people know it’s possible to use a better product that comes from humanely raised chickens.” Ezekial Bread Caffe Luna Rosa offers two healthy bread choices to customers during breakfast and lunch. Ezekial Bread is a flourless 6-grain bread with nine amino acids, that is high in vitamins and proteins. It is made from sprouted grains and legumes and contains no added sugars. For guests practicing a gluten-free diet, Caffe Luna Rosa offers a high-quality locally produced gluten-free bread. Valet Bike Rack Healthy fare is not all that is now being offered to customers at Caffe Luna Rosa. In addition to regular valet parking, the restaurant has recently installed a free bike rack for customers of Caffe Luna Rosa and Burger-Fi who self-pedal. For safety, the rack is located neat the “Valet Q” on Atlantic Avenue, where drivers queue up for parking. The restaurant’s new Valet Bike Rack is also open to public beachgoers for only $2. continued page 18

delray under $50 By Darien Arden

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in May for $50 or less.
G
ardens make the world go round! Well, actually, my belly. The older I get the more I appreciate being able to walk to my garden (however small or makeshift it is) and pick some fresh herbs to enhance my homemade meals. May is Gifts from the Garden Month and if you opt for purchasing your tasty greens instead of growing them, the GreenMarket is your mecca for all things edible. And you must act fast because May 2 and 9 are the last two days for the GreenMarket for the season! Nooooo. I’ve got some tips for you to take full advantage of the dwindling goodness: bring more hippie recyclable bags than you think you need to carry your goods (I learned the hard way while riding my bike home with my mountain of purchases); bring your dog for some ample smell time; come early to get the best of the best and stay late to get the best deals; and say hi to your community neighbors! The Delray GreenMarket brings out the best of what Delray has to offer and is the prime spot for breads, seafood, meat, paella made right in front of your eyes, fresh veggies and fruits, pickled everything, exotic flowers and more. Shop local, get some sunshine and help your body. Life is good. The GreenMarket is located at 50 N.E. Second Ave. at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts lawn and is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit www.delraycra.org for more information.
I
don’t always work out, but when I do, I wear all neon, listen to vintage Madonna and grunt loudly. Is that weird?

May is Global Health and Fitness Month and the benefits of exercise are hard to ignore (I know, I’ve tried). Not only does exercise control weight and help combat health conditions and diabetes, getting a good sweat will improve your mood, give you more energy, and even give you the ability to last longer when it counts, wink. If your gut has you in a rut, take part in the Fitness in the Park at the Delray Marketplace where you can take advantage of free fitness classes the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. If you care to sweat on Saturday, May 2, Xtend Barre’s Joleen Samian, a certified Circuit 7 trainer, will make your “seat” sweat and cry until it’s pure muscle. WOD Farm’s Scott Lefferts, a certified CrossFit coach, will transform your body on Sunday, May 3 and make you hate and love the workout at the same time. Both classes begin at 10 a.m. so bring your friends for some emotional support, and maybe arrange a driver for after class because you might not be able to move your arms. The Delray Marketplace is located at 14851 Lyons Road. Call (561) 865-4613 or visit www.delraymarket.com for more information.

y ay ay, it’s time for all things Spanish! May is National Salsa Month and salsa is, in my mind, one of the best dips ever. It can be salty, spicy or sweet, added to a seven layer dip for football
parties, plays well with margaritas and guacamole, and is packed full of veggies. What’s not to love? But, the fun doesn’t stop there as the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is back again and hits our fun zone and stomach with the best that Spanish culture has to offer. Presented by the Hispano-Latino Cultural Alliance, this annual celebration
includes Mariachi bands, local Hispanic bands, folkloric dancers, children’s area with arts, crafts and games, vendors dishing up Mexican and other foods, and merchandise vendors so you can leave with a little bit of Spanish with you. There’s even a chihuahua costume contest with awards for the cutest and funniest costume, and a hot chili eating pepper contest where contestants eat their way through five varieties of peppers! The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is located at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Outdoor Pavilion and grounds, 50 N.E. Second Ave., and is held May 2 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $15 per person and children 10 and younger are free. Call (561) 276-3396 or visit www.delrayarts.org for more information.

eer, beer, beer. Down in my belly. Craft beer has maneuvered its delicious way into the forefront of the drinking world and I’m not angry about it. Brewmasters, I tip my tiny hat to you. American Craft beer Week is May 11 through 17 and in addition to having the pick of the beer litter from restaurants on the Avenue, Delray is home to the Old School Beerfest so all IPA, porter, pilsner and stout lovers unite because we’re sampling fine brew till the cows come home (burp). Held May 8 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., you are invited to celebrate the art of a well-crafted beer with a few thousand of your local drinking buddies while you indulge in all the hoppy and malty flavors you love. You will enjoy unlimited sampling of craft brews, international beers and ciders, food stations (for purchase), wine tasting, game area, cash bar and live music. It’s like a carousel of beer and the ride is never ending. I’ll cheers to that. Admission is $35 and the proceeds support community programs and outdoor concerts, so you’re basically scratching your own future back. Just don’t drink and drive! The Delray Beach Center for the Arts Outdoor Pavilion is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Call (561) 2437922 or visit www.delrayarts.org.

sk anyone and they’ll tell you the most important thing in life is family and friends. Maybe delicious food and travel are a close second, but the close relationships you make throughout life and the people who help you up and keep you up are the best. That’s why you need to protect your peeps! May is Family Wellness Month and Spodak Dental Group is hosting a self defense class so you can learn how to protect yourself and those with you. The Ladies FIRST Self Defense Class was created and is taught by a decorated SWAT officer who has 20 years of police experience and more than 35 years of combat training experience. The system he teaches is reality-based and the strategies and techniques are designed to work on the streets and not just in the classroom. A woman is assaulted every two minutes so it is incredibly important to protect yourself and those you love. The class is designed to prepare women of various ages, athleticism, strength, flexibility and body types to convince an attacker they have chosen the wrong victim. Put simply, it is designed to save women’s lives. The class is held May 20 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is free so be sure to attend and bring all your lady friends. Spodak Dental Group is located at 3911 W. Atlantic Ave. Call (561) 498-0050 or visit www.spodakdental.com for more information or to RSVP.

ing night reception of its latest art exhibit entitled “Express Yourself” on Friday May 8th at 6:30 pm at Milagro Center in Delray Beach. This visual and performing arts event is an opportunity for Milagro Center’s supporters and friends of the organization to experience the same joy and creativity the Center provides daily to the 80 children and Teens it serves each day in its afterschool and summer camp programs. The exhibit will run from May 8th through June 19th 2015. Attendees will view the amazing art in the Gallery exhibited by local artists and then craft their own creative projects while enjoying snacks and wine provided by Whole Foods. Spoken Word, dance, and drumming performances by local talent and Milagro Center’s own teachers round out this entertaining evening. resources to mothers nationwide. Through spreading the word about this website, Michelle will give moms a lasting Mother’s Day gift. The website connects moms to a variety of resources to make motherhood easier, and ensures that they easily find the right professional to help their families stay healthy and happy. Instead of encouraging superwoman moms, ihelpmoms.com has opened up the communication to show that asking for help is the strong thing to do, as it can reduce stress. “I love working with ihelpmoms because it is an organization that totally understands what it takes to be a mother. Michelle Brown has assembled a team of experts to help moms every step of the way throughout their parenting journey,” said Dr. Cindy Bunin, Director at Cambridge School. Founder Michelle Brown experienced a difficult recovery after her first daughter was born, and was without a network to rely on. After piecing together her own group of professionals, the idea of ihelpmoms. com developed. The site provides valuable information to expecting moms, new moms, experienced moms and even supermoms – who also may need help now and again.
“I don’t want moms struggling silently or being stressed out unnecessarily. I custom designed the ihelpmoms.com website to specifically connect professionals that are family focused to moms that need help, while also sharing my personal experiences. It is convenient and mom approved,” Brown said. The community includes: • Search feature for nearby providers, including cleaning, mothers helpers, doulas, doctors, photogra-
phers, shuttle services, spas, tutoring, food delivery, yoga and much more. • Shop feature to sell or purchase affordable, gently used, baby gear nearby. • Mom Confessional Blog, where Brown shares her personal experiences. • Listings of mom groups to enable moms connect with other nearby mothers. For more information regarding ihelpmoms, please visit the company website, like their Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

When it doubt, spell it out. “Spy” stars Melissa McCarthy as Susan Cooper, a CIA desk jockey who is also the unsung hero behind some of the agency’s most dangerous missions. All heck breaks loose when her partner (Jude Law) goes off the grid and a fellow agent (Jason Statham) is compromised. Rose Byrne plays Susan’s best buddy Raina. May 29 The fault is in the San Andreas. “San Andreas 3-D” stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Ray, a rugged rescue helicopter pilot who travels across California after a massive earthquake in search of his estranged daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario). Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did? In this thrilling book, master historian David McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers’ story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them. Greer Hennessy is a struggling movie location scout who after a disaster has been given one more chance--a shot at finding the perfect undiscovered beach town for a big budget movie. She zeroes in on a sleepy Florida panhandle town. There’s one motel, a marina, a long stretch of pristine beach and an old fishing pier with a community casino--which will be perfect for the film’s climax-when the bad guys blow it up in an allout assault on the townspeople. Bring into the picture Eben Thinadeaux. Eben is a born-again environmentalist who’s seen huge damage done to the town by a huge paper company. The bay has only recently been re-born, a fishing industry has sprung up, and Eben has no intention of letting anybody screw with his town again. The only problem is that he finds Greer way too attractive for his own good, and knows that her motivation is in direct conflict with his. Will true love find a foothold in this small beach town before it’s too late and disaster strikes?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Non-surgical Approach
{
By Dr. John Conde
One of the most prevalent non-laborious work related injuries is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The main complaints of an individual with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include pain and weakness encompassing primarily the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The pain can radiate from the wrist or just begin in the hand.
An individual may complain of difficulty holding a pen or pencil, shaking someone’s hand, grasping a cup, and even holding a sheet of paper. The pain seems to be worse at night, worse as the day progresses, and can be described as sharp or throbbing in nature. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is understood to be an overuse syndrome of the tissues that bend the wrist towards the chest. Overuse implies that the tissues were used excessively or more than “average” over a certain period of time. The tendons that flex the wrist travel together with other tissues such as blood vessels, ligaments, and nerves in a small and rather tight space called the carpal tunnel. Many different nerves travel in this space, however we will focus on the median nerve as this is the pertinent nerve when discussing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The physiology of the injury can be explained as an irritation to this median nerve by an overuse of the muscles and ligaments that travel with this nerve. In essence, as the muscles get over used inflammation can occur causing the muscles to swell and scar tissue to form making the tunnel smaller. What can be done for this syndrome? Reducing the pressure within the tunnel is vastly important. In order to decompress the area it is recommended that the individual wear a cock-up splint during sleep hours. Additionally, a procedure termed a fast stretch can be applied which encompasses stretching the muscle abruptly while the muscle is already in an 46 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
eccentric or extended position. This is to be performed by a trained physician such as a chiropractic neurologist. Cold laser therapy is a very effective adjunctive treatment option which accelerates the healing process. The light emitted by the cold laser device contains numerous small particles called photons that interact with receptors on the injured cells called chromophores. This seems to be a lock and key interaction which activates the genetic machinery in the cell allowing the tissue to produce more proteins. Another byproduct of laser therapy is increased local blood flow and immune responses. A prolonged stretch can also be performed daily by the patient and should be held for greater than a minute each time. Chiropractic adjustments of the wrist seem to be very helpful at increasing motion in the joint and re-aligning the bones in the joint thereby increasing the space in the tunnel. Lastly myofascial release, a procedure done to break down scar tissue within the muscle, is to be performed on the muscle groups involved. This is also to be performed by a physician. From a nutritional and dietary prospective the goal is to reduce inflammation and increase nerve conduction or the speed of the signals. This is to be done by reducing the intake of heavy red meats, nut products, partially hydrogenated oils, and fried foods. Green leafy vegetables, cold water fish, and fluids are actually recommend-
ed to reduce the inflammation. Vitamin B6 or pyridoxal-5-phosphate at relatively high doses is fantastic for nerve conduction and should be routinely recommended for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Advances in Cellulite By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
{
For most women “cellulite” has long been a bad word. Cellulite is the unwanted cottage cheese look of the skin and fat. It affects up to 90% of all women including the fit and trim. Getting rid of it has never been easy.
48 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Treatments have previously been either mostly ineffective and/or involve very costly invasive surgeries, like liposuction.
What is Cellulite? Cellulite is the herniation of fat within fibrous connective tissue that manifests itself as skin dimpling and nodularity. Usually it appears on the buttocks, legs, and abdomen and looks like dimpled or bumpy skin. Some describe it as having a cottage cheese or orange peel texture. Mild cellulite can be seen only when the skin is pinched — the dimpling appears in the pinched skin. More severe cellulite makes the skin appear rumpled and bumpy with areas of peaks and valleys. This usually starts in women after puberty and rarely occurs in men. Cellulite isn’t a serious medical condition, but it can be unsightly and may make one self-conscious about wearing shorts or a swimsuit. The causes of cellulite include weight gain, rapid weight loss, hormonal changes (pregnancy) and genetic factors. Hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite, particularly estrogen.
Many factors cannot be changed in our lives, such as the genes we inherit, but there is something new and exciting available to help treat cellulite. It’s called the “Z-wave”. This is a German technology that uses uses high energy radial shockwaves to reduce the appearance of Grade 1-3 cellulite (mild to moderate dimpling). During the treatment, a rounded tip applicatory is applied to the skin (about the size of a tennis ball). As the technician moves the applicator around the surface of the problem area, shockwaves are being transmitted though the fatty tissue. This painless process feels like an ultrafast-pulsed personal neck massager. The shockwaves break down cellulite’s fibrous connective tissue and it leads to a collapse of the gas bubbles within the fat structures (cavitation) and destabilizes the fibrous tissue. Improvement in the appearance of cellulite can be seen after as little as 2-3 treatments. A typical treatment session will last only about 15 minutes, that being the amount of time required to treat both outer thigh areas. A total of ten treatment sessions are recommended for optimal results. Because there is no pain and no downtime whatsoever, it can fit into anyone’s lifestyle. So, in addition to cardio, toning and eating right, the Z-wave can help keep the cottage cheese where it belongs (in the refrigerator). Dr. Thomas C. Balshi 4665 W. Does your smile need a little support?
{
BY Daniel Torres, DMD
Implants are an attractive option for people with missing or failing teeth
What are Implants? Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth (called the crown) and the root are lost. An implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. There are three parts to replacing teeth and consist of the implant, usually made out of titanium; the abutment, which is a connector to the implant; and the crown, which is the replacement tooth. There are many different types of implants available and can be used to replace an individual tooth, for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth, or a complete new smile. Sometimes it is also necessary to build the missing bone through grafting, but new technology allows dentists to avoid grafting in many instances. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. People who have dental implants are able to eat confidently, smile and laugh, enjoy the foods they love, and participate in activities they might have otherwise avoided.
Benefits of Implants Dental implants are often the first choice for replacing failing or missing teeth for several reasons, all of which greatly improve your quality of life! Implants are the next best thing to healthy, natural teeth as they look, feel, fit and function like a normal tooth. Other options can lead to bone deterioration and may interfere with eating, smiling, speaking and other everyday activities. Implants are also built to last and offer a long-term solution when compared to dental bridges. While dental implants may need periodic adjustments, they can last a lifetime when properly placed and cared 50 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
for over time. Additionally, dental implants allow you to keep your teeth where they belong – in your mouth! You no longer have to worry about losing or breaking your denture, and you can bite naturally, allowing you to eat your favorite foods without cause for concern. Another benefit is that implants also help to protect healthy bone. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to additional health issues, such as the loss and deterioration of some of your jawbone. When the jawbone is not being used to support a natural tooth, the jawbone deteriorates, losing strength and firmness, and this cannot be reversed. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone and helps to prevent bone loss. Implants also help to protect your natural teeth because they prevent the healthy, adjacent teeth from shifting as they would if an empty space were left for an extended period of time.
Are implants right for you? If you have at least one tooth that is missing or failing, implants might be an attractive option for you! Not everyone is a candidate for implants but most people are who have good health and whose jaw has finished growing are able to get implants, regardless if they were simply born without teeth or lost teeth due to decay, injury, gum (periodontal) disease, infection or other reasons. Dental implants are also a great option for people who don’t want the drawbacks of, or who can no longer wear, removable dentures. The best and easiest way to determine if you’re a candidate is to make an appointment with a dental implant expert and he/she can review all options with you and help you work toward smiling happy again! Is Your Mindset Holding You Back? By Kevin morgan, CPT
How many times have we heard the phrase, “calories in verses calories out?” When it comes to weight loss, exercise and proper nutrition is key, but we must not overlook the importance of mental motivation in order to execute what it takes to reach our goals.
No matter what our starting point may be, most everyone has a vision in mind of what they desire to look like. Whether you need to lose a significant amount of weight or are just trying to trim and tone, there is no difference between the amount of work and dedication it will take to do so. Some may look at a large weight loss goal as “impossible,” “too hard to do,” or “not worth it.” Well, most of our motivation to achieve even the smallest task starts with our mental mindset. To begin the process of proper self-motivation, our “self-talk” is key. When we view ourselves in a negative light by focusing on the overall amount of weight we need to lose, by referring to our old self as “fat,” or even judging how we let ourselves get to where we are now is detrimental to our long term success. Believe it or not, our minds are one of the strongest muscles in the body, and therefore they need to be exercised just as much if not more than anything else. Exercise of the mind includes proper self-care including positive affirmations and a healthy body image. We must start acting as the person we envision ourselves to be, whether it is a healthy clean eater, an avid gym goer or a long distance runner, we need to first practice carrying out the actions of what that person would look like. More than just trying to get there in time, we need to believe for ourselves that it is possible to be that person now. The more we envision ourselves in the present as the outcome of our hard work and dedication, the more we will be driven to dedicate ourselves to get to the long term results. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we 52 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
can simply “think ourselves thin” without putting in the work, but we cannot expect ourselves to execute our full potential if we are stuck in a negative mindset. Hard work DOES pay off, but we all need to start somewhere. Some of the smallest first steps will eventually lead to our biggest leap. We also can’t afford to not have fun in the process. Any transformation of body, mind, and lifestyle takes a lot of time. Sometimes routine can get repetitive so we must remember to always keep things fresh and interesting. Reward yourself when you reach any of your goals whether it is that new pair of shoes you have been eyeing or splurging on a massage, taking care of yourself along the journey makes the ad-
venture that much more enjoyable. Keep in mind that we are all capable of following a food plan and exercise routine, but we are also capable of putting ourselves in a place that surpasses what we think we are able to do. If only we would let go of our perception of what we think is achievable and allow our minds to move in a more mindful direction, we can find ourselves in a place of peace, progress and positivity. Luxury Knows No Bounds
SEASIDE BUILDERS By Diane Feen pHOTOs BY Robert Stevens
{
There’s a saying that luxury has no boundaries. Tom Laudani would agree with that statement. You know why?
Because Laudani knows that luxury has infinite possibilities. He also knows that details can make life (and your home) a place to of ultimate comfort and repose. He knows that because, as co-founder of Seaside Builders he has turned miracles into mirages from the ground up. As a matter of fact his company has already sold seven of ten townhomes in the new Seagate Yacht Club Residences. The 4,200-square-foot townhomes – that start at $3.6 million - have rooftop decks, private pools, elevators and con-

temporary styling. “Seaside Builders is the leading residential developer and General Contractor, building luxury single family homes and townhomes east of the Intracoastal,” said Laudani, who has 35 years experience in the building business and an eye for perfection when it comes to luxury housing.
One of his latest projects is an 11,000-squarefoot oceanfront residence at 1275 North Ocean Blvd in Gulfstream. To say this two-story Bermudian style home is luxurious would not be doing it justice. With two staircases, a massive marble bathroom, an elevator and a walk-in closet the size of a studio apartment, this home is a masterpiece of fine taste.
Although the elements of style and grandeur are in the stratosphere, it’s not overdone. Instead it is in a class of its own – subtle, luxurious, stately and elegant. The landscape architect – Dave Bodker – kept much of the original flora and added Magnolia trees, Palm trees, Agave shrubs and lush Zoysia grass. But that’s not all. There’s 150-Linear feet of private ocean front property and 15,000-square-feet of backyard space leading to the beach. As far as swimming pools go this 20 X 50 ft. pool is elegant and refined with a seamless marble ledge. Not far from the pool is a covered lanai with outdoor fireplace, gas grille, teak cabinets, refrigerator, ice maker and perfect view of the ocean. While the solar blanket heats the pool, life inside this magnificent home can be described as haute couture (one-of-a-kind). The kitchen is massive with white marble countertops (lots of them); a commercial kitchen hood with colorful limestone over the stove and dual ranges (gas top burners and electric on the bottom). There’s also a drawer that opens with the flick of a switch where a microwave resides along marble countertop seating. If a kitchen could be a designers dream, then this one is beyond a waking fantasy. The hanging silver lamps and elegant drop lighting hosts the kitchen island and open air countenance. It’s also one of Laudani’s favorite rooms in the house. “The kitchen at 1275 North Ocean Blvd is beautiful, especially the Downsview custom walnut cabinetry. Behind it is a Butler’s Pantry with refrigerator, freezer and floor-to-ceiling wine cooler.” The first floor master bedroom is spacious and grand with French doors (that open up to a marble patio) with natural light and lus-
cious seaside views. The master closet is 350-square-feet with double doors (of course) and the nearby sitting room is large enough for two chaise loungers, a dresser and enough memories to fill a stadium. The master bathroom is as spacious as a California ranch and has an elegance befitting a king and queen. The huge shower is exotic yet minimalistic with seamless white marble, overhead shower heads and shower controls on the opposite side. The electric Toto toilets open and close with the tap of a button and have a heater and bidet with dryer. There’s also a first floor office/study with oak paneling, built-in book cases and parquet flooring. The second floor of this home is equally as majestic as the first. There are four bedrooms with European oak floors, laundry room and open Club Room with refrigerator, ice maker and a luscious view of the ocean. The Club Room has a 75-inch flat screen TV and leath-
er swivel seats that allow one to glance at the ocean or the playoffs. The second floor bathrooms are works of art with frameless glass shower doors, polished nickel faucets and designer mosaic tile. If all of life is a dance then music is as necessary as food. That’s why Seaside added a sound system that goes throughout the entire home with speakers out of view. The wires and electrical system are neatly tucked away in a separate room behind the staircase. There’s also a second hidden room with concrete walls for your safe or private belongings. There’s no hiding the fact that this home is a resort in and of itself. Its luxurious furnishings (and attention to detail) are unrivaled and the harmonious flow from room to room is palpable. “This home brings to market all of my years of design and development experience. Architect Richard Jones created the Bermudian exterior with North and South wings that give it the feel of a Tropical Island Resort. It is also the largest and most extensive single family residence we have built to date. It is truly exceptional,” said Laudani. Laudani’s partner, Patrick Whyte, is also part and parcel of this luxury residential construction dream team. “The success of Seaside Builders is our team approach. We specialize in luxury custom home construction, renovation and restoration. Home buyers know we take pride in our work and are meticulous when it comes to unique details, moldings, outdoor living spaces, sophisticated styling and interiors. Above all customer service is paramount,” adds Laudani. SEASIDE BUILDERS 185 Northeast 4Th Avenue Suite 104 Delray Beach, Florida 33483 (561) 272-9958

If looking good takes a village then Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology, Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute is the zenith of terrains. The reason is simply that their two Board Certified Dermatologists/Dermatologic Surgeons treat patients like Rembrandt would a canvas.
The Institute – located on glamorous Las Olas Blvd – is home to one of the most renowned cosmetic dermatologists, Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera, who is an internationally known expert in beauty restoration, cosmetic lasers and age-reversing techniques. “Our patients rave about his remarkable ability to turn back the clock on their appearance with a genuine sensitivity to their needs and concerns,” said Rich Goren, CEO and co64 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
owner of Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology, Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute. Not only is Dr. Aguilera a genius when it comes to understanding facial structure and age reversal techniques, he has invented and trademarked ten proprietary signature treatments such as Frax-Sculptsm (which utilizes Sculptra Aesthetic topically by infusing it during the Fractional Laser treatment) and Stem-Sculptsm (that stimulates

your stem cells by topically infusing your own Platelet Rich Plasma). “The results are natural, minimally invasive and can be done in one fast treatment.” The institute also offers the very latest state-of-the-art instrumentation in the nonsurgical cosmetic dermatology field, thanks to co-owner and CEO Rich Goren. “We were one of the first offices to offer Restylane Silk and we have the best equipment available for optimal, customized age reversal, fat destruction and cosmetic enhancements” said Goren, who is one of the top laser experts in the country. There is a lot happening at Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology, Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute. The office continues to attract patients from around the world including many celebrities, who want to stop the clock yet retain a natural beautiful appearance. The practice is in such high demand because of their reputation for excellence that they have tripled their space and now have 17 treatment rooms, up from the original six. For several years Dr. Aguilera was actively looking for another Dermatologist to augment his thriving practice. He waited until he met Dr. Luis Soro to do so. The reason may surprise you. “As a Keynote speaker and an Assistant Professor of Dermatology for five Universities you can imagine, I train a lot of residents, dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but I was waiting for someone very special. There are many injectors of dermal fillers and talented physicians out there, but they didn’t have the same bedside manner, ideas about natural looking beauty and traditional values I have. And I wanted a Dermatologist who could handle the most advanced skin conditions in regards to lasers and age reversing therapies. We do more than use lasers and needles; we deal with vanity issues and fears about aging. We guide our patients to grow older with dignity so they feel good about themselves and leave here rejuvenated physically and in spirit. Dr. Soro is gentle, compassionate, caring and a great artist with a keen eye for aesthetics and the anti-aging process and that’s exactly what I was looking for. He performs treatments on me and he is very impressive” Dr. Soro is a Board Certified DermatologistDermatologic Surgeon, who studied biology and chemistry at University of Pennsylvania and attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University. “I am focused on maximizing age reversal and restoring a youthful appearance without surgery. the best results,” said the Miami native.” Both doctors are masters of the facial form and its inherent ability to change with age. Just recently Dr. Soro, gave a presentation called; “Look 10 to 20 Years Younger in 4 Days!” “Dr. Soro achieves this remarkable transformation through our proprietary techniques while utilizing a myriad of Gold Standard Fractional Lasers,” adds Goren. “We use a full suite of high-end laser technologies including several of the latest Gold Standard, “Deep CO2,” Fractional Laser technologies, which are upgraded with rapid scanning, multi-pulse technology to regenerate skin deeper than ever. We also offer fully nonablative, Affirm dual fractional laser for a double skin rejuvenation, tissue tightening and resurfacing with zero downtime as well as Fractional Radio Frequency RF for the safest resurfacing on dark skin.” Dr. Soro just did my treatment recently on my face, neck and decollote and I was topically numbed and felt nothing, but it erased a decade off me, it was great!” says Goren. One thing for sure, both Dr. Aguilera and Dr. Soro are driven to help patients look young and beautiful without the downside of overtreatment. “We are very passionate about what we do. Our goal is to make patients feel like a better version of themselves. We don’t over treat people; we respect their underlying facial structure.” “When I was 16-years-old I had acne and was treated by a famous dermatologist in Miami. It improved my self-esteem and showed me that dermatology can change how a person feels about themselves. Dr. Aguilera is a leader in the field of cosmetic dermatology and on the cusp of every new treatment.” Dr. Soro trained with Dr. Aguilera and has become an expert at the same remarkable

techniques that Dr. Aguilera is well known for. “I spent a lot of time working with Dr. Aguilera and was impressed with the techniques he uses to rejuvenate the skin. I have an extensive knowledge of the different lasers we use and know how to get the best results for each skin type. I am very passionate about what I do.” “Dr. Soro is an artist with a keen eye for restoration and rejuvenation. He is very precise and meticulous about everything he does. He is a true master artist with Dermal fillers, Botox®, lasers and Platelet Rich Plasma and hair follicle stimulation. I wanted someone who was an extension of me. We are not just doctors; we are partners for our patient’s emotional, cosmetic and spiritual journey. I have total faith in Dr. Soro, he does everything exactly the way I do and has mastered the art of my natural looking enhancements’. said Dr. Aguilera. Attorney Taryn Sinatra is known for always going above and beyond for her clients. Now, she will continue to champion her clients’ best interests as she joins the prestigious marital and family law firm Gladstone & Weissman, P.A., located in Boca Raton, as partner. She will continue to serve her clients at this renowned firm. “Jeffrey Weissman has been my mentor for a number of years and the firm supported me as a solo family law practitioner. When he and Peter Gladstone offered me this opportunity, there was no doubt in my mind that this was absolutely the right move to make,” said Sinatra. “Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. is a highly regarded marital and family law firm within the South Florida community. By joining the firm, I can work alongside some of the most skilled marital and family law attorneys in the state and be part of a team. I am proud that I was able to run a successful solo practice for five years, but there’s a sense of camaraderie that was missing after a while as a solo practitioner. I’m looking forward to being part of this ambitious team,” Sinatra added. Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. handles complex divorce and related family law matters. The firm was founded in 1999 by Peter L. Gladstone and Jeffrey A. Weissman, two of South Florida’s Florida Bar Board Certified marital and family law attorneys. Sinatra says her clients will benefit from the transition in her practice by gaining the combined experience and resources of the Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. team. “At Gladstone & Weissman, P.A., I’ll be given the opportunity to grow and advance my practice in many different forms. By joining the firm, I’ll be able to maintain my personal and professional work ethics,” said Sinatra. “The firm dedicates its practice to exclusively handling marital and family law matters, which was attractive to me since that’s where I’ve
focused my practice over the last five years. The model founded by Peter and Jeff is unique. Where typically you’ll find a solo practice, partnership with two or three attorneys, or a very large firm handling many different areas of the law, Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. is comprised now of six attorneys who exclusively handle complex marital and family law issues. It’s a nice-sized team with a boutique feel.” “Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. is known for representing a select number of clients, many of which involve high profile cases, high net worth estates, and intricate family law matters,” she continued. “What sets this law firm apart from the rest is the immeasurable value placed on client relationships and the manner in which the firm conducts itself as attorneys and people in the community. All matters at Gladstone & Weissman, P.A. are handled with the utmost sophistication, grace, professionalism and integrity.” Sinatra mirrors those same ethics and professionalism. She received her J.D. from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center, and she became a member of The Florida Bar in 2005. Her law career began in the area of criminal law as a prosecutor, when she served as an assistant state attorney in Broward County for several years. Sinatra then worked with a mid-sized law firm practicing civil litigation before redirecting her focus to family law. “When I began practicing family law as an associate for a local family law attorney, I knew right away that marital and family law was something I had a deep passion for. I opened

my own practice in March 2010. Five years later, this is where the next chapter begins, as I join Gladstone & Weissman,” she said. Sinatra has received much praise for her diligent work as a family lawyer. “I have had a few family law attorneys over the years, and Taryn Sinatra is finally the one I am sticking with forever,” stated one of Sinatra’s longtime clients. “She is wonderful at handling everything for me, and I have a lot of different things going on all at once. She is extremely friendly and helpful, but Taryn also knows how to be as aggressive as she needs to be in court. She always gives me feedback and advice on exactly what is best for me. With other attorneys, I was always very confused at what each next step was. Taryn explains everything and is always available within a reasonable amount of time to answer my questions. She’s very professional and knowledgeable. All in all, she gets five stars in my book.” According to another client, “Taryn has guided me through a divorce and child custody case during a rough time in my life to begin with. She knows the laws and the rules and ensures that the goal has those in mind. The best interest of all parties involved is one of her ethos. I would never recommend anyone else for any family law matters.” “Taryn is amazing! She takes the stresses of family disputes and puts them into perspective, all while handling these difficult situations professionally and swiftly. I would highly recommend Taryn to anyone in need of a good lawyer,” stated a satisfied client. Contact Taryn Sinatra today with your family law questions and concerns. Madison Ave. Meets Atlantic Ave By DIANE FEEN photos by melissa korman
{
Some endeavors start with a dream. With OGK that dream began four years ago. Their beachside studio houses a highly skilled, well seasoned team of visionaries, strategists, designers, storytellers, producers, developers and writers. They challenge themselves without corporate rules or a bureaucracy to get in the way.

The OGK group describe themselves as: “An agency that bonds collaboratively to form a tribe of marketing influencers and strategic business mavens.” How does this four-year-old diversified Atlantic Avenue Agency continue to land global brands and turn out the quality of work that competes with Madison Ave? The answer is “Only God Knows,” said Chris Occhipinti, Co-Founder. Co-Founder Craig Kuperman says their secret is a combination of positive karma, dedication and talent. “In a challenging economy, many companies across the globe are seeking to launch their new brand, refresh their existing brand, build a following of loyal customers and increase sales. They are looking for extraordinary talent with 68 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

breakthrough ideas and execution.” If you ask long time client Hal Pastner, CEO of Bigfoot Hoops, you see that Kuperman’s theory has merit, “As a business owner who wanted to create a better image, I searched the country for a branding firm that could accomplish that for me. I spoke with companies from New York, Indianapolis, California, and Texas. And as fate would have it I found OGK in Delray Beach. I was impressed by their insight from our very first meeting. My goal was to develop an image through national ads that would convey our stability. And they have accomplished this for us.” When you meet with the team at OGK, they like to say: “Let the work and client’s results tell our story, because at the end of

the day nothing else matters.” Atlantic Avenue is far away (in miles and emotion) from Madison Avenue. And, you don’t have to look far from the OGK offices to see that. “It doesn’t come from inflated egos or patting ourselves on the back, but from the portfolio, payoff and comments from our clients,” said Don Tolep, Creative Business Strategist. “At almost every initial client meeting for prospective clients, someone says: ‘So what does OGK stand for?’ If you ask the team the answer is: “Only God Knows.” “Then clients smile, nod, chuckle and get that there really is something magical going on around them,” said Tolep. The OGK partners are feeling really happy about this obscure yet comprehensive glory.
“It’s fulfilling to work at an agency that we dreamed about creating someday. We are blessed with a terrific staff that gives 100 percent day in and day out (sometimes under extremely stressful conditions). The trust clients place in OGK is the lifeblood of the agency.” The bigger question is why OGK? “The answer is that we are leaders and trendsetters in marketing and branding. The ultimate solution is to truly connect with one’s end users.” It’s the little things that are everything, they say. “At OGK, our clients appreciate the intense level of detail that goes into every project. Sometimes that means lots of discovery, other times it’s a subtle flip of a mental switch that goes on like a light bulb without a string.” Brian Tipton, OGK Chief Creative, had this to say about their success: “Branding is a specialty art. Surprisingly branding - and the importance of a significant investment in it - is a concept not fully realized by everyone in business today. While many agencies make pretty pictures and provide advertising layouts, a good branding agency provides the brainpower, strategy and discovery that disrupts an industry.” Kuperman adds: “OGK starts with two fundamental questions for clients: Who are you and Why Do You Matter to the World?” Many companies are excellent at making a product or sharing their professional advice, but when it comes to telling their story, they fail he said. One example is Nike. “Nike doesn’t sell athletic gear, they market Fitness. Starbucks is another. They market customer experiences along with coffee. Like Gurus and motivational speakers, these brands speak loudly,” said Roiby Gonzalez, Creative Director. Companies like Nike and Starbucks place a heavy emphasis on upfront branding and are now leaders in their category. But they spent millions of dollars to create their brand. Too often clients ask OGK, “Do you have to spend that much money in order to succeed?” “We believe the answer is emphatically NO!” Instead, OGK feels it is critical to develop an authentic relationship between the brand and its customer. That creates an ongoing experience to keep the customer engaged, they said. The OGK Marketing Magic seems to fall upon customers like a meteorite. “Working with OGK has been an absolute pleasure. I have worked with many Madison Avenue firms and none of them can come close to their approach, team and workmanship. They are BRANDING GURUS and creative storytellers. Their unique approach is collaborative, innovative and they embraced our project with passion,” said client Asim Kamdar, SVP of Summitry Research. Kamdar added: “What’s refreshing is that they come to the table with opinions, perspectives and a point of view - traits many of the big-name agencies fall short on. If you want an engaging experience that will produce a high-end brand choose OGK.” All this branding brain power is happening right here on the Avenue. It’s an unusual phenomenon that has changed the lives of the people who work there and the clients they partner with. OGK is located right across the street from the Marriott Hotel. They invite you to pop in and say hello! However, they want to warn you: “Be prepared to change your thoughts on marketing forever.” OGK CREATIVE 1200 East Atlantic Ave Delray Beach, FL 33483 561 450 6721 www.ogkcreative.com

High-Goal Professional Polo Lives Bigger and Better in Wellington By skip sheffield
Polo began on the grounds of the Boca Raton Club in 1955 and the last professional match was played April 8, 2008 at Royal Palm Polo Grounds on Clint Moore Road. Now polo fans travel to Wellington in western Palm Beach County where the Palm Beach International Polo Club has bigger and better polo facilities than ever imagined in Boca Raton or Gulf Stream. “We are the only club in the U.S. that is exclusively high goal,” says IPCPB general manager John Wash with pride. “Most of our teams are international. They go on to play in Europe and South America after our season.” Players are rated by goals, with ten being the highest. The four-member teams that play IPCPB are at least 26 goals. This

makes for exciting, cutthroat competition, yet at the same time polo is a genteel sport that adheres strictly to rules of conduction enforced by horseback referees. The game is astronomically expensive. It takes a well-heeled “patrone” to mount a competition team. “It costs anywhere from 2 to 4 million to mount a world-class team,” explains Wash. “Patrones must be motivated by the love of the game, for there are no monetary rewards, no tax write-offs, just bragging rights.” There is no better bragging right than winning the US Polo Association Open Competition. IPCPB has been home for this ultimate battle since 2003. IPCPB is home to the USPA C.V. Whitney Cup and the Piaget USPA Gold Cup, but by far the most prestigious is the USPA Open,
celebrating its 111th year in 2015. “We are one of the only permanent polo stadiums in the U.S.,” says Wash. “When we agreed to build the stadium in 2003, it was motivation to bring the USPA Open to Wellington. We enjoy consistently large crowds- 5,000 to 7,000 people- during the 16 weeks of play during the season. Lower goal playing continues throughout the year in Wellington. We are adding additional sports during the off-season: AYSO (American Youth Soccer) and field hockey; rugby and Lacrosse. Wellington has a 7,000 square-foot reserve if we ever choose to expand.” Polo is covered online by Chukker.com and Horseplay.TV.com. The USPA Open Finals will be broadcast by NBC-TV. Allyson Sullivan Runs For “Those Who Can’t”
{
I just ran the 2015 Boston Marathon for Team Eye and Ear in a little over 5 hours…yaaayyy !!! They only had 50 spots available, so I was beyond thrilled that I was accepted. Here is my story of why I chose to run in the first place……
My very close friend and neighbor, Bob got very ill with Nasopharyngeal Cancer (a cancer of the throat and esophagus.) Right around the time Bob got sick, was when I really started to run distance. During my runs, I would always think about people who were suffering, and I would dedicate my run to them... Kind of like running for “those who can’t”!! My grandmother died of a similar cancer in the 1960s, and she was treated at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston. Watching Bob suffer through his treatments motivated me to push forward!! I am pleased to say that Bob was able to beat cancer, and is now living cancer free!! With fundraising for research I wonder if my grandmother would have been as lucky as Bob? Right around the time Bob made his full recovery, I made a personal goal to run a half marathon. Training for 13.1 gave me a lot of time to think and feel extremely grateful. It was at this time about 2 years ago, right before my first half marathon that I went out for a run on a Sunday morning, went shopping in the afternoon and had a pretty great day... until I received the most tragic news. My best friend from High School had died in a car accident the night before. My friend, Laura Kelly had 78 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
died just a couple weeks after her 35th birthday. I still am in disbelief today… Laura still lived in Framingham and I flew into Boston for the funeral and as I do, I brought my running shoes. While I was out for a run in Massachusetts, I really felt like I was dedicating my run to her. “Running for her because, she can’t.” A client of mine from Boston emailed me the link to the application for the Mass Eye and Ear Boston Marathon team. I immediately thought of Bob, and how treatment from a hospital like the Mass Eye and Ear saved his life. I decided then, this was the perfect team that I wanted to run with. I am so passionate about raising money through running and I couldn’t be more grateful to have run for Mass Eye and Ear in the legendary Boston Marathon!! I committed to a personal goal of raising at least $15,000 and I exceeded it! So I thank everyone who supported me. You can still make a gift today. special feature ║ Imagining a Better Place
Imagining a Better Place By linda brown
{
About a decade ago the board at the Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square and the City Commission had a vision for the grounds near the cultural arts center.
Taking lessons learned from the Downtown Master Planning process and a later visioning session for parks, there was a strong desire to eliminate an ugly parking lot and replace it with a new downtown park. Of course, replacing the parking would be important too, since the downtown was emerging into a regional attraction. So the city envisioned building a parking garage on the edge of the square that would not only replace the surface parking but add some needed spaces as well. As a bonus, the commission decided to make the garage a “mixed-use” facility with the ground floor eventually becoming the new home for The Arts Garage and the Delray Chamber of Commerce. The direction a decade ago was clear, the city commission envisioned a “central” park that would be lively and vibrant like Piazza’s in Italy or New York’s famed Bryant Park. They were concerned about the park not becoming “dead space” in the heart of town and talked about perhaps launching a design competition or engaging the renowned non-profit the Project for Public Spaces to assist in creating a memorable place. Fast forward a decade and it seems that dream may finally be coming to fruition. Kick started by a public lecture given by Fred Kent, a part-time resident of Delray and the co-founder of the Project for Public Spaces, newly re-elected Mayor Cary Glickstein and the Center for the Arts’ board are once again dreaming big, resurrecting the original vision for the park. It’s not as if the past decade has seen no action in the park. The space has become the preferred home of the CRA’s Green Market, which has grown in size and popularity 80 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
and has also housed a number of festivals notably The Garlic Fest and other special events. Still, the space is not seen as an “every day” park and the Center’s Board of Directors, CRA, citizens and city would like to see more activity on a regular basis. The CRA contracted with RMA Associates, a private firm to hold a public charrette in late March that surfaced new ideas and rekindled some older ones. RMA President Chris Brown, a former CRA Director and Delray resident, led the discussion by showing examples from around the world of vibrant public plazas and parks. Some of the ideas that are being considered include: • Adding shade and some food and beverage kiosks to encourage people to stay in the park. • Adding a screen on the garage wall for movies and performances. • Adding children’s activities. • Opening the bottom wall of the garage to accommodate co-working spaces so entrepreneurs can have affordable space down-
town. • Adding public art or water features and possibly replacing some of the grass with a permeable hardscape since the grass is often having to be replaced after festivals. While some of the ideas had fans and detractors, there seemed to be proud public consensus to keep the Green Market in their home, but possibly expand operations to include a few nighttime markets. The charrette drew a standing room only crowd of residents, business owners and top city officials indicating high interest in the fate and potential of the park space. The redesign of the downtown park is part of a larger plan to take a look at other so-called “lazy assets” that can be re-thought and re-activated. Kent’s lecture on placemaking dovetails with Mayor Glickstein’s goals to create memorable public places. The City Commission plans to look at the Tennis Center, land behind the Delray Beach Public Library and other assets in the near future. “Delray is a very special town,” said Kent. “There are many opportunities to make it even more so.”

Flat Stanley Rides Again for Kids and Cops By linda brown
{
Delray Beach residents Chuck Halberg and Jimmy Christe have made it their mission to ride their motorcycles and touch the 48 states in the continental US over a 3 year period.
82 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
But in typical fashion, these easy riders are not in it for the glory of the open road: sure they love the ride, but they also want to help good causes in Delray Beach, especially those impacting children and police officers. This is the final year of their plan and they are taking a journey that will touch 22 states in 23 days and travel around 9,000 miles. They decided this year to make it a fundraiser for Kids & Cops and to help them raise money (and keep them out of trouble) they decided to take Flat Stanley with them. The iconic children’s character Flat Stanley will be doing everything with the guys and you will see nightly updates from Flat Stanley of things they did each day. It will be a lot of motorcycle riding, some great scenery, some pool side relaxing, some good eating and a good night’s sleep. The last time Flat Stanley made the ride, the trio raised $13,500 for local charities. This time, Halbert, Christe and Stanley hope to exceed that total. The beneficiaries of this year’s ride are: Delray Beach Education Foundation: Administered by the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Charities, this 501c3 raises funds for local schools and for worthy programs outside the normal school budget. Achievement Center for Children and Families: For more than 40 years, this community institution has provided outstanding education and care for Delray’s most at-risk children. CJ Foundation: This non-profit supports programs for children with autism, cancer and special needs.
Prep & Sports: Founded by Atlantic High football coach T.J. Jackson, Prep & Sports provides tutoring and other services for young athletes in Delray Beach, making sure that their academic success matches their prowess in sports. Delray Citizens for Delray Beach Police: For over three decades, Delray Citizens has served as a police support organization helping the families and children of Delray Beach police officers. Family Promise of South Palm Beach County: Working with local churches and synagogues, Family Promise helps families get back on their feet with shelter, job counseling and an array of support services. Delray Beach Miracle League: The Miracle League recently celebrated its 10th anniversary providing opportunities for children to play baseball. Pine Grove Elementary School: Halberg and friends through his Delray Beach Initiative have gotten behind efforts to support this local school in Delray’s southwest neighborhood. The trip kicks off May 28 with a ride to Panama City Beach, Florida. From there it’s off to New Orleans, Greenville, Mississippi, Nashville, Asheville, Virginia Beach, Charleston and a final stop back in Florida in Daytona Beach June 13-15. A range of sponsorship and donation levels with creative categories such as a pledge for every salad Halberg eats, every time he goes to the gym and every time he takes a picture with a police K 9 are available. All expenses for the trip are self-funded and all donations are turned over to the Delray Chamber Charities. For more information and to make a pledge visit www.delraybeach.com/ flat-stanley.

KEVIN FINNERAN Lacrosse Gold By Diane Feen
{
Photo by melissa korman
It’s easy to tell when Kevin Finneran is around. The wind blows a little softer and the sun shines a lot brighter. The strapping six-feet-two-inch tall lacrosse coach (and pro) has the broad smile of a lottery winner and the glow of an eternal optimist.
To know Finneran is to know that his life is wrapped up in a game predicated by protecting your goal and tossing a small ball around the field with a stick. Though the game of Lacrosse is gaining momentum in the sports lexicon of Americans, it has always been the defining momentum in Finneran’s life. The Long Island native was first introduced to the game by his 6th grade art teacher Mr. Lupetin. He was smitten from the start. “I fell in love with the game – the action, the up and down on the field and the swift movement of the ball,” said the five time National Lacrosse League Champion. Finneran played lacrosse at Cornell University and ended up graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University. While there his team - The Battling Bishops – was the runner-up in the National Lacrosse Championships. He also met someone who would change the trajectory of his life. “Coach Mike Pressler was a mentor to me. He got me on track academically and taught me about loyalty, perseverance and team first. He became the Head Lacrosse coach at Duke University.” Coach Pressler’s words and passion for lacrosse were not in vain. Finneran imparts those same life lessons to the children he coaches in Delray Beach and around the country. And there are a lot of them. Finneran is the Head Lacrosse Coach at Atlantic High School (and was instrumental in starting the lacrosse program there). He also coaches Lacrosse for the Delray Riptide Youth Lacrosse Team (he was the former director) and has lacrosse camps, clinics and teaches privately. Coach Finn’s passion and exuberance for the game is legendary. If you talk to people who know him you’ll hear about his reverence and dedication to the sport. “Kevin radiates enthusiasm and is cheerful, caring and energizing to be around. He is accessible
May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
to the kids; listens to them and helps them on and off the field. He’s also an excellent role model for the children,” said Randy Kurtz, mother of Kai Cheslack, who Finneran has coached for five years. Kurtz is right. Finneran has helped over a hundred high school lacrosse players around the country get recruited to colleges. “I call lacrosse coaches, write letters to colleges on behalf of students and sit with parents and kids to help them make their way to college. I enjoy helping students achieve their dream of playing college lacrosse.” Finneran knows the intensity and drive it takes to be successful at any skill. When he was trying out for the US National Lacrosse Team he didn’t make it on his first try. Instead of bemoaning his fate he sprung into action. “I went home and thought about what I needed to do to get stronger and more skilled. I hired a personal trainer to improve my diet, strength and confidence and I made the team in the next tryouts.” Not only did Finneran make the team – he became a celebrated player. He is in the New York Lacrosse Hall of Fame and won a gold medal for the US National Lacrosse Team in 1998. Finneran was in five National Lacrosse League Championships (Philadelphia Wings), two Major League Lacrosse Championships (New York Lizards) and was an All-Pro-All-Star seven times. Though Finneran is a lacrosse superstar you would never know it by meeting him. He radiates friendliness and is down-to-earth in his demeanor and lacrosse imprint. Finneran mentions he played lacrosse for the Philadelphia Wings, the New York Lizards and professional lacrosse teams, but he doesn’t utter a word about his Wikipedia page or Hall of Fame status. That’s what’s so great about this devoted all-star superstar. It’s also what transforms students’ lives on
and off the field. “Kevin often rides his bike to the games and the kids see that. They also respect and appreciate him and listen when he instructs them. Kevin expects a lot from the kids but he is so positive, funny and uplifting that it motivates and inspires everyone,” adds Kurtz. Finneran also volunteers his time to coach lacrosse for the Riptide Team and makes sure that everyone has what they need. “If a player needs equipment or a uniform and doesn’t have the means, we make sure they get it. I also help council or mentor young men at Atlantic High School who might be having a hard time in school or at home. We have a float in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Delray every year as well.”
Coach Finn also volunteers for Delray Reads Day (a reading program in Delray schools) and has helped out at the Delray Beach Playhouse. Aside from his unwavering devotion (and dedication) to lacrosse, Finneran’s other passion is acting. In this pursuit he brings out the same A-game as he does on the lacrosse field. “I first tried out for a role in the play Twelve Angry Men but was not chosen. I tried harder the next time and was cast as Herr Zeller in The Sound of Music. Last year I was named Best Featured Actor playing Boolie in the production of Driving Miss Daisy at the Delray Beach Playhouse.” Finneran is also a commentator for Fox Sun Sports covering the professional la-
crosse team (the Florida Launch) in South Florida. It’s easy to see that Coach Finn is a hero to those who know him. He has played lacrosse most of his life and has overcome obstacles that might have crushed a lesser man. Through it all he has remained humble, fun loving and an exemplary role model for young and old. “Coach Finn is an ambassador for lacrosse and creates excitement at all levels. He is energetic, loyal, fun and inspires the kids,” said Scott Silver, whose son Max is coached by Finneran. Out hats are off to a man who inspires others to reach their highest goals and who understands the minor underpinnings of what it takes to be a decent human being. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | May 2015

Divinity In A Cup
THE GRIND CAFÉ
By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{
Howard Molder lives for the thrill of the hunt. He has covered culinary and coffee terrain and always comes up with something that a great excavator would cherish.
You could call Molder a true foodie. In his former career he worked in the wholesale coffee business but after many years he decided to take his show on the road (so to speak). His year-and-a-half old coffee house is a far cry from neighboring coffee shops because of its independent spirit and level of quality. Molder attends food shows and international food expos and seeks out small owner-operated companies that take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Take the warm chocolate twist croissant for example. Sounds ordinary (sort of) but it melts in your mouth and tantalizes your senses like a good back rub. Words to describe this orgasmic feast are somewhat lacking when faced with the reality of its immediate endorphin rush. 100 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Coconut Raspberry Latte paired with a Reese Peanut Butter Pie and Gluten Free Chocolate Caramel, and mocha chocolate chip Biscotti
There is other sweet stuff in this sparkling clean hot spot in West Delray, but its only part and parcel of a place that provides freshly brewed and prepared coffees, sandwiches, wraps and Panini’s. They also have a full breakfast menu (that starts at 8 am) with omelets, egg sandwiches (with meats) bagels with lox and cream cheese, steel cut oatmeal, espresso, gourmet teas, homemade muffins, fresh OJ and a lot more. You may not be able to order a filet mignon or fried chicken but you can set your sights on the most scrumptious Panini’s in town. They’re served piping hot on special Ciabatta bread. The Italian Melt Panini has turkey, ham, mozzarella and pepper jack cheese (we added artichokes). Such are the simple pleasures of life. Also, delicious (and fresh) is the Caprese Panini with pesto, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. There’s also a chicken Panini (or wrap) served with chicken and melted Swiss cheese as well as There’s a lot to be said about a coffee house that takes pride in serving unique items culled from the best and most precious of vendors. The chocolate twist croissant is made of French dough and baked at The Grind Café, and the bagels are from New York and baked on the premises. The Hamantaschen and Rugelach come from San Diego and the deep dish apple pie and coveted carrot cake come from Pennsylvania. Molder doesn’t aim to have his gourmet foods on route from other destinations, but he can’t help himself from discovering food (or coffee beans) that are divine in nature. “I search the globe for decadent desserts, coffees and teas that will make our customers happy. Many of our sweet stuff is baked on the premises and our customers love it that way,” ssaid Molder, who is as passionate about The Grind Café as he is the interior space that oozes comfort and calm. If coffee is your second favorite thing (next to your life partner) then The Grind Café has you covered. Their exotic coffee beans are roasted on Florida’s West Coast and custom blended for maximum pleasure. Right now they are serving Espresso with handpicked coffee beans from Peru, Brazil and Kenya. The bold flavor enhances specialty coffee drinks such as Mocha Latte, Caramel Cappuccino or Iced blended Fraps. The coffee beans change every month or two but the common thread is excellence. “At the Grind Cafe, we have many blends of the most amazing coffees from around the world. This way we get a wide array of distinctive flavors and styles to match any palate. You won’t find a better
Turkey & Ham Panini
Triple Mousse, Chocolate Marquis and Tiramisu
7 layer Carrot Cake
cup of coffee anywhere,” said Molder. If muffins make you weak in the knees you have to try their homemade pistachio, cinnamon, blueberry or chocolate chip muffins. Also sought after are French Macaroons brought in from Paris via New York. This light decadent sweet spot is made of ground almonds and soft meringue with a creamy center. They come in peanut butter and jelly, pistachio and maple rhubarb and taste like heaven has just landed on your tongue. On the coffee front they also have Macchiato and Caramel Macchiato lattes, coffee made with Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans and award-winning Teas from Shangri La. If you would rather steep loose tea leaves they have a self steeper that will act as arbiter to your taste buds. With all this attention to detail The Grind Café was recently heralded as the second most popular coffee house in Palm Beach County. And it comes as no surprise to Molder. “There is a difference between a coffee shop and a coffee house. In the later you have a professional Barista who knows about the coffee beans and the grinds.” Since The Grind Café prides itself on being a true coffee house they have live entertainment from Thursday to Sunday. On the second and fourth Friday Ashley Bowersox
performs live and on Saturdays you can hear Susan Ashley. On Sundays you might find Sherry on the keyboard belting out tunes. There’s also a “Broadway at the Grind” night coming up and Karaoke on Thursdays. One thing about The Grind Café is that nothing is ever second class. Their espresso machine was handmade in Italy especially for them, and the interior space was designed so guests can let their hair down and enjoy the moment. Just ask Steve and Helen Myers. “The Grind Café is terrific. We love the atmosphere, the Panini’s, the desserts and coffee drinks. The Chicken and Swiss Panini was one of the meatiest, juiciest, most tender chicken breasts ever, warmed in a perfectly grilled Panini package. The pistachio muffin was fresh and soft with a delicate hint of almond. It’s worth the drive from Boca.” Come for the pleasure, stay for the good vibes. And don’t forget they’re open early for breakfast. As Molder likes to say, “Come in and Fall in Love.” The GRIND CAFÉ The Marketplace of Delray 14859 Lyons Road #132 Delray Beach, FL 33446 561-270-2058 www.GrindCafeDelray.com

Health is the Goal!
E
very day we receive phone calls and visits from confused and frustrated pet owners that are searching for answers to their pet’s health challenges. Often they have already been to the animal hospital looking to their veterinarian for answers and leaving there feeling that they received nothing but a large bill and maybe some medications but no answers to the actual cause. If there is no cause, how do we prevent it from reoccurring or even curing the problem? The stories being presented to us from concerned pet owners are often similar to these… “our pet was vomiting, he’s lethargic,” or “my pet has diarrhea.” Most were told by their veterinarian to bring them right in. Their vets did some blood work, gave them medication before an exam was even done and then told the pet owner that there was nothing showing up in the blood work. Usually they attribute it to the food and try to sell you their special diet, offer the newest heartworm or flea medication, update the pet’s vaccination and then send them on their way. What these pet owners really wanted were answers in a clear understandable manner. The questions we get are “Why didn’t the medications work?” or “why was medication
prescribed before the testing came back?” and “why are the tests not showing the causes?” Our approach is too simple for the business and profit model of modern medicine. All disease comes down to two causes, deficiency (malnutrition) and toxicity (poison). In nature, every living animal eats raw species appropriate foods for every meal. They don’t take extra vitamins or supplements because food such as this, already contains them. Why do we feel we need to process and destroy the nutrition in pet food and then add in toxic synthetic nutrients derived from chemicals to replace these perfectly good nutrients that were already there? The medical industry does almost nothing when it comes to evaluating or testing for either deficiency or toxicity. They never consider that the symptoms that they are treating for are caused by the drugs, medications, and vaccines they actually administer. They rarely look at the household, lawn, or environmental chemicals that your pet is exposed to daily. Because of this deficiency in evaluation, proper and correct treatments are extremely rare. We are really experiencing an emotional sale from seeking a solution based on terms such as “suffering, comfort, emergency, urgent” which
only encourage you to buy extra tests, treatments and medications instead of making clear decisions that can only be made after we learn of the cause. Ask yourself this, when we have diarrhea, do we need to be rushed to the emergency room?. Does your doctor immediately give you antibiotics, fluids and other medications? Do they order expensive blood tests and x-rays? Do they tell you to change your food from McDonalds to Burger King? Diarrhea is cleansing., This is the body’s way of eliminating bad things. Once the bad stuff is out, the body then heals. If we would all just use our senses, we would then be looking for the sources of toxicity in our own environment. Health is not about medicine. It’s about allowing our pets to eat biologically appropriate foods that will create a healthy balance and keep them away from highly toxic drugs that create the physiological state we refer to as disease. Again, it’s all about going back to basics. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM co-own Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach and co-host PetHealthCafe.com radio show. misc ║ He Said / She Said
By Robert V and Marie T
Comical and slanted male/female point of views on everyday issues... As we sadly bid farewell to our favorite Single Girl Columnist Nicole Flier, we wish her only the best in her endeavors and congratulate her on her nomination for the 32nd Annual Women in Leadership Awards of the Executive Women of the Palm Beaches! Way to go Nicole!!! With high stilettos to fill, we at Atlantic Ave Magazine decided to take a fresh approach on our Singles Column. Born from the concept of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” and from reader’s suggestions, we now give you “He Said/SheSaid.” Author John Gray sold 9.5 million copies of this book - maybe he was onto something... Our writers will offer their unique points of view on varying subjects - and our staff can’t wait to see if their opinions are always from different planets, or if sometimes, the planets align. Let us introduce... He: A professional, middle-aged man. Having survived his mid-life crisis, he now derives great pleasure witnessing the foibles of his friends going through theirs, all the while giving him great fodder for you, the reader. Active in the community, father of three and business owner, he struggles to find 28 hours in a day and stay on balance. He’s a man who writes with a Neanderthal flare. Don’t worry my brothers, I will represent the testosterone nation in this column. We will discover what makes the fairer gender click and endeavor to understand them (as if). She: A (not so) middle aged, employed, divorced mother of two driving teenagers (boy and girl). Figuring out how to balance this new life, teens, finances, friendships, and a dog, all the while checking stuff off her bucket list. Learning to adjust to a single lifestyle after 20+ years of being in a marriage, and sometimes tripping up but always laughing along with life and it’s new challenges. And unlike He, She is currently navigating and enjoying her mid-life crisis. Make no mistake ladies, She will not be trying to figure out or understand He...we all know this is equivalent to them asking for directions! Tune in next month for our first topic. - Suggestions? Contact us at info@atlanticavemagazine.com. Subject line “He Said/She Said.” We look forward to hearing from you! 114 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People
Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus
Do you want a one-stop shop for a dose of creativity and fun? Well than you must pay a visit to the NE 4th Street Plaza. This little strip is host to some of the city’s coolest small businesses and interesting owners. Pop in each one and I’ll guarantee you find something that makes you feel good. Ride the wave of South Florida watersports in to owner Ryan Pena’s The Salt Fly, he is sure to have you paddling out. Before you do, slide next door to Jonathon Delgado’s Project Mate Bar for a boost of physical and mental energy. Or if you’re like me, strum on over to SoFlo Music School where owners Lauren Huff and Christopher Montegue will get you playing those tunes you always wished you could. The Grove has something for everyone and this plaza illustrates it once again.

Delray locals’ heart is Pineapple Grove and the Art District, for me I couldn’t ask for a better place to have my business. I am also lucky enough to live in the same neighborhood. Life is sweet here in the Grove!
Christopher Montague & Lauren Huff The Pineapple Grove Arts District has been a perfect fit for SoFlo Music School. It’s great being surrounded by so many young and creative businesses.

Pineapple Grove exemplifies what a sense of community feels like, local merchants and artists coming together to support one another. We are grateful to be in the Artist District and to be able to contribute and support in our own way.

A Heartfelt Thanks
{
We used to say if we could clone the Achievement Centers for Children & Families, we’d have a better world.
Whenever I’m asked for an example of a model non-profit, I immediately think of the Achievement Center. For over 40 years, starting in a church classroom and growing into a major campus on Lake Ida Road, the Achievement Center has changed lives by striving to break the cycle of poverty in our community. Recently, the center’s longtime– but now retired –executive director Nancy Hurd was honored when the campus was named after her. It was a small but joyous ceremony which was fitting for those of us who know Nancy. After all, she declined a big gala when she retired preferring to be surrounded by friends, family, longtime supporters of the mission and of course the children she dedicated her life to. For generations of children in Delray, Nancy Hurd and her staff were angels. They provided love, care, education and a range of services to our most vulnerable children and their families. And they did it as well as it can be done. To see that work continue is heartwarming beyond words. Under Nancy’s smart and strategic leadership, the Achievement Centers (which started out as the Delray Community Child Care Center) set the bar for excellence in service delivery, financial stewardship and real and lasting impact. In life, you don’t meet too many people who impact generations, but Nancy Hurd is one of those few who have done it. Her passion for children, her pursuit of excellence and her big heart not only impacted our most needy families, but they inspired staff members, volunteers and board members to dig deeper, try harder and care more. I am one of those she influenced. I first met Nancy when I was young reporter, new to Delray and anxious to write about interesting people. We hit it off right away and I returned to do many stories over the years for the old Delray Times. When Gov. Lawton Chiles paid the newly expanded center a visit, the governor’s staff arranged for a private tour just before the big public event. Gov. Chiles was like that, a rare politician who really wanted to dig in and learn why this organization was so special. He also wanted to interact with the kids away from the press. Nancy made sure that I was included on that exclusive tour and it give me a chance to meet and talk with the governor. Nancy knew the experience would be meaningful to me and it 118 May 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
was. We never talked about it, but the visit made an impression and showed me that politicians could have hearts. Later, I would spend many years on Nancy’s board and I must admit it was easy work. The organization was so well-run that most meetings were spent just smiling at the results we were seeing. Trust me, that’s not always the case when you serve on non-profit boards. My term on the board allowed me to observe Nancy’s leadership style and I was especially impressed with her ability to spot and nurture talent. The best leaders develop other leaders. Nancy and the board did a great job finding and developing the super talented Stephanie Seibel, who took the reins when Nancy retired. The organization continues to thrive, which is the mark of a championship team; when superstars retire the success continues. Nancy and I have become friends over the years. She was a great source of strength for me during the tough times that I experienced in public office. I knew I could drop by unannounced and get hugs from the cutest children on the planet and then get solid advice from someone I knew, loved, respected and trusted. I always left feeling better. Always. Now when I drive by the campus every morning on my way to work, I will be able to see Nancy’s name on the Achievement Center’s sign. And I will remember her life’s work, her impact on generations and her influence on one young reporter. Nancy didn’t say much at the ceremony. She was happy and clearly touched. But she did say that she couldn’t have imagined having a better life. And for the thousands and thousands of lives she has touched; we can’t imagine anyone living a better life. Well done, Nancy. Your work and your impact will live on forever.
