By Jeff Perlman, Editor

I

November just might be our favorite month

t’s short, it has Thanksgiving and we are well into football and basketball season. What can be better?

Yes we miss LeBron James but we still have Dwyane

Wade and company and you can’t beat our fall climate.

We don’t even have to sweep leaves.

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude and in this month’s edi-

tion of Atlantic Ave Magazine we give you our annual list of what to be grateful for.

Fortunately there are a lot of things to be thankful for in Del-

ray Beach. And this magazine is a monthly celebration of what’s great about Delray Beach.

I get to travel far and wide and whenever I tell people I am

from Delray they tell me how much they love our community.

We did a lot things right in this community and I’m personal-

ly grateful for all those who have devoted their time and energy to making this city a place to savor.

For those of us who have been here awhile, it’s especially

gratifying to see our town busy even during the off months and what was a rainy and hot summer.

I’d also like to give a shout out to Stephanie Immelman, the

head of our Downtown Marketing Cooperative and Nancy Stewart-Franczak for their award-winning efforts and events that

make Delray Beach such an enjoyable place to live year-round.

Last, best wishes to Tom Johnston who had a health scare but

is on the mend.

We also send our condolences to the family of Jerry Sanzone,

the former chief building official and longtime resident who

passed away last month. Jerry had terrific stories and a wonderful smile. He was one of those people who helped to build Delray. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Have a wonderful month and a

Connected Warriors

8 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Maybe you’ve been to a yoga class and have experienced the benefits of stretching, breathing and connecting? Or you know someone who loves yoga? There’s a reason why yoga has become so popular. It’s simple. Yoga works and produces amazing healing for the mind, body and spirit. Connected Warriors, founded by Judy Weaver and Ralph Iovino, is a charitable organization that is dedicated to teaching the men and women of our military and their family members’ practical and effective trauma conscious yoga based techniques to help them lead healthier lives as they fight various medical, physical and emotional issues. It all started when a single young man who served five tours in the Middle East arrived home to discover that a new battle was waging war in his body. He was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s (ALS) disease. He approached his diagnosis as an opportunity for him to do everything in his power to live --- the rest of his life --- as healthy as possible. As chance would have it, he walked into one of Judy Weaver’s Yoga classes and was introduced to the postures and breathing control techniques that visibly changed his life. Thanks to a committed instructor and an unbreakable will to live fully, Beau MacVane’s length, and more importantly, quality of life was extended. Research confirms that yoga exercise and relaxation techniques can have a positive impact on veterans’ physical problems, mood and energy levels. The goal of Connected Warriors is to provide, without charge, effective wellness programs that enhance the lives of veterans, service members and their families. Connected Warriors is founded on the principle of seva “selfless service.” These veterans gave that to us; it is time to give back. If you know a veteran or family member that can benefit from more peace, Connected Warriors is here to help! Learn more visit ConnectedWarriors. org for a schedule of classes and to consider making a donation.

More Than 200 Guests Attend Delray Beach Historical Society’s 50th Birthday Celebration

It was a birthday celebration honoring those who made a commitment 50 years ago to ensure Delray Beach’s

significant history was not forgotten. With more than 200 guests on hand, the Delray Beach Historical Society hosted a 50thBirthday Celebration to recognize the small group of residents who came together in 1964 and created the organization, which today is now more than 300 members strong. “Our community-wide birthday party was a great success,” said Delray Beach Historical Society Executive Director Winnie Edwards, a Delray Beach native whose father was one of the founders. On hand for the celebration were two of the founders – Roy Simon and William Gwynn – and William Williams, grandson of Ethel Sterling Williams, a driving force behind the creation of the historical society. Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein and several other elected officials joined the celebration, at the Historical Society’s campus on the corner of Swinton Avenue and Northeast First Street The celebration of the society’s 50th birthday continues for the next several months and will include a special December event to be announced soon. For more information about the Delray Beach Historical Society and other upcoming events, visitwww.delraybeachhistory.org or call 561-274-9578. continued page 12

STUART & SHELBY Keeping it Delray By CHUCK HALBERG

The construction of a new home or renovation of your existing home can be a stressful time for many people.

built 1924

You begin optimistically; you have time frames and a budget, but within months you realize that your predictions aren’t turning out how you had originally planned. There are delays with permits and development applications, and people are not as punctual as you would like. It seems as though you will be plagued by bad luck throughout the journey of your project, and these may be just the beginning of the obstacles to come. The process of building or renovating should be exciting, but it can sometimes be painful, both financially and emotionally. The good news is that these stressors can be avoided. By choosing the right general contractor for your new construction or renovation, you can have a feeling of complete satisfaction by the end of your experience. When choosing your contractor you should take into account, price, references, workmanship and service but you should also consider which ‘vendors’ your contractor uses. Your neighbors will tell you that Stuart & Shelby is a hassle-free contractor, as well as choosing local suppliers when practical, and for many reasons – Keeping it Delray. At Stuart & Shelby we have been building, almost exclusively in the Delray Beach community for over 8 years. We pride

ourselves on ‘shopping locally’ where possible, which we feel helps to build a stronger community both economically and socially. Locally owned businesses generally recycle a larger share of their revenue into the community, which in turn can provide more jobs and often better wages and benefits. Where we shop, eat, and frequent are what makes our community our home. One-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of a place. These local businesses also hire people with a better understanding of the products that they are selling and take more time to fulfill the customers’ needs. These businesses are also less likely to leave and are more invested in the community’s future. Our new construction signs can be seen around town with our ‘Built with Integrity and Pride’ logo looking familiar, because you will also have seen it sponsoring such events as the Delray Beach Garlic Festival, Delray Beach Wine & Seafood Festival, Delray Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Delray Affair, The Achievement Center for Children & Families, The Arts Garage, Old School Square Concerts, The Delray Beach Laugh at the Library, the Elks Fishing Tournament, The Milagro Center,

restored 2011

Spady Museum, and this past year Stuart & Shelby committed to a Donor Wall Presenting Sponsorship for the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Capital Campaign. Each one of these organizations is part of what makes Delray Beach the place that we are so proud to call home, they do the hard part, and we just get to help them focus a little more on their mission. For us at Stuart & Shelby it is more than writing a check. Not everyone can financially support the non-profits that they believe in, but they can volunteer. As business people, we all have a certain skill set to offer. If we were to each offer that expertise to a cause in the community, think of the difference we could make. With over 1000 hours of volunteer time on City and Non Profit Boards we have grown to have a real appreciation for their hard work and the need for the business community to be involved. Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County announced that it has been named a recipient of The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s 2014 Community Development Grant. The grant is part of a $402,500 collective donation to address issues related to affordable housing and

neighborhood revitalization in South Florida. The grants will help individuals and families regain and maintain financial stability through access to affordable housing, preparing future homeowners, providing financial education or contribute to the area’s economic development by supporting work that contribute to the vitality of our communities. Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County works to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for hardworking and deserving families in the cities of Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and Boca Raton. They build homes in partnership with families who demonstrate a need for housing and a willingness to work to purchase a home of their own. Bank of America’s grant will help specifically fund the “Building Homes, Building Hope in Delray Beach” project. Habitat is in the process of building six new homes in Delray, two of which will house Veterans and their families. When the Delray homes are finished, this affiliate will have built 125 new homes, in the three cities they serve, thanks to generous funders such as the Bank of America Foundation. For years, Bank of America has invested in community development grants throughout South Florida. This year alone, the grants will impact approximately 354,855 individuals in South Florida. “It is crucial to provide stable, affordable housing and home ownership to individuals in Delray Beach, so we can build a healthy and vibrant community. Through the Community Development Grant, Bank of America is making a lasting impact and we are honored to be a recipient,” said Michael Campbell. “Bank of America provides a great example of the potential of corporate social responsibility with this grant and is a model for investing in nonprofits who are serving the critical needs of those in their local communities.” continued page 22

Volunteer Delray 2014 Event Matches Nonprofit Opportunities with Interested Volunteers

22 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Leanne Griffith, Kim Bentkover, Kelly Kerr, Candace Rojas, Joe Gillie, Lynn Van Lenten

Businesses and Individuals Discover Opportunities through Nonprofit Expo EVENT AT A GLANCE * Friday, November 14, from 5 – 7pm * Followed by Free Friday Night Concert at 7:30pm * At Delray Beach Center for the Arts, Old School Square Pavilion * FREE to the public * 30 Nonprofits represented * Volunteer opportunities and sign ups, Inquiries for Board of Director Openings * Raffle for free drinks during the

concert for 1 person who signs up to volunteer with a nonprofit * The Concerts typically bring in 1,000 – 3,000 attendees
Did you know that the National Value of 1 hour of volunteer service equals $22.55? This value is typically used by nonprofits to demonstrate the valued rate of support they receive from local volunteers in their communities. Simply put, an hour of volunteer service
provides a nonprofit organization with $22.55 worth of FREE help. That’s A LOT of financial savings! This year marks the 3rd Annual Volunteer Delray event that will take place Friday, November 14, from 5 to 7 pm, prior to one of the Free Friday night concert Series at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. This event is FREE to the public and provides the perfect opportunity for our own citizens to meet local nonprofits, learn about volunteer opportunities and discover potential Board of Director openings. The Expo format allows attendees to really match their personality, their time and availability, as well as their passion for a cause and to be a proponent of a nonprofit that is looking for volunteers.
Volunteer Delray will have over 30 different nonprofit vendors at the Old School Square Pavilion, set up in the breezeway by the stage at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. A printed list of the nonprofits participating will be provided to attendees with a stated mission and contact information for each organization. All community residents and businesses are invited to come learn how they can volunteer with/and support local nonprofit organizations.
Come and find out where YOU can serve alongside one of our nonprofit organizations both here in Delray Beach and around Palm Beach County. Your service hour equaling $22.55 will have an invaluable impact on the nonprofit of your choice – and our community!
Questions may be directed to Lynn Van Lenten at the Chamber of Commerce, lynn@delraybeach.com, 561278-0424.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in November for $50 or less.

H

ow did we last all summer without you and your bounty? Delray’s GreenMarket is back, and thank our lucky stomachs! November is National Parent-Teacher Association Healthy Lifestyles Month and fall is the perfect time to get the kiddos in the mood for healthy fruits, vegetables and exercise. The GreenMarket is a well-oiled machine when it comes to offering guests healthy alternatives to the processed and manufactured world of food. Looking for the freshest fish around or the greeniest juices? GreenMarket. Interested in vegan cooking tips? GreenMarket! You’ll be “snack” dab in the middle of 65 vendors featuring farm-to-fork produce, freshly picked citrus and juices, farm fresh eggs, raw milk and butter, 100 percent grass-fed, antibiotic- and hormone-free beef, poultry, pork and lamb, artisan baked goods, tons of gluten free, vegan and sugar free products, fresh cut flowers, plants and other unique gourmet fare, and not to mention live entertainment. a healthy lifestyle in a fun and engaging environment, so what’re you waiting for – get out there and get your Market on! The GreenMarket is located at 50 N.E. Second Avenue. Visit www.delraycra.org or call (561) 276-7511 for more information.

or me, thanksgiving consists of relishing everything I’m grateful for, spending time with family and friends, and eating my body weight in turkey until I’m in a gravy state of mind. However, for many families out there, Thanksgiving isn’t so bountiful. If you’re looking for a way to bring more meaning into your holiday and enhancing the holiday of others, check out your local food bank and see if your services are needed, or make an extra turkey dinner and bring it to your community church. If you prefer to be more active about it, grab the family and the running sneaks and lace up for the 28th Annual Delray Beach Turkey Trot 5K Run/Health Walk. Held November 22, which is Family Volunteer Day, enjoy a nice run/walk along A1A as you burn some I’m-going-to-need-space-

for-turkey calories and spend some time with your family as you all sweat to help others. Registration begins at 6am, the run begins at 7:30am and the walk begins at 7:35am. Entry fees for the run start at $25 for 15 year olds and older, $10 for 11 to 14 year olds, and children are free with a donation of at least two perishable food items, and the walking fees start at $20, $5, and free with a food donation, respectively. The best part (besides the free T-shirt and ocean breeze) is that all proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit the “Keith Straghn Feed the Hungry Thanksgiving Drive” for needy families of Delray, Boynton and Boca. That is a win, win we can all enjoy. The Turkey Trot begins at Anchor Park, located at 340 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.mydelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-7250.

love food. Cooking, really. Specifically chopping and stirring. And smelling. If you are, unlike me, stuck in a cooking rut and your creepy diet of liquid shakes, roasted almonds and “smelling only,” then grab your apron because we’re going to celebrate Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day on November 8. If curry or wild boar isn’t in your playing field, then lucky you because I’ve got a two-day food festival, held November 8 and 9, to get you back into cooking strike zone. Welcome to the Third Annual Delray Beach Wine and Seafood Festival, where you’re privy to the finest local seafood and vino in town from our favorite restaurants. Along with the wide variety of delectable seafood dishes and fine wines, the Delray Beach Wine and Seafood Festival offers an enticing array of artists and crafters, many of them showcasing Florida coastal designed art and clothing, so you can drink your wine while wearing the finest palm-tree-and-pink-flamingo button-down around. If you’d like to learn a thing or two, grab a ticket for one (or seven) of the wine and food pairing seminars. Schedule the Taste of Sonoma at 12pm on Saturday, compliments of DaDa and Chalk Hill, for $45, or a 3pm date tasting Burgundy, France with Joseph Drouhin and Ziree Thai and Sushi. Best part? Free admission, leaving you plenty of money so you can get your fish on. The Festival is held along Atlantic Avenue between the Intracoastal and A1A from 11am to 10pm on Saturday and 11am to 7pm on Sunday. Visit www.dbwineandseafood.com or call (561) 278-0424 for more information.

et’s chase those blues away! November 28 is National Day of Listening and while you could call your bff and let her cry on your shoulder about her recent three pound weight gain and how it’s ruined her dreams of becoming an entertainer on a cruise ship, take her out where there’s loud music instead! Garth Brooks – The Ultimate Tribute is coming to Delray and would like to tug at your heart strings as he woos you into cowboy musical heaven. The Free Friday Concerts at the Pavilion is back in major decibels and brings you free concerts every Friday night through January. The concerts start at 7:30pm and the only thing you’ll need to bring is a blanket, maybe some chairs if you like the finer things in life, and your friends and family because there’s drinks and food trucks galore. If you’re in the mood to party hardy before the end of the month, check out Orange Sunshine on November 7 as they bring you the best of the ‘60s, or Odyssey Road belting out Journey songs on November 14 and Jay Blues Band on November 21. Whatever your music pleasure, your ears are going to get some lucky listening time. Party on, Garth! The Free Friday Concerts are held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Pavilion, located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit www.delraycenterforthearts.org or call (561) 243-7922 for more information.

Beachcomber Art

By Debbie Brookes, owner

D

ebbie Brookes, owner and Creative Director of Beachcomber Art in Delray Beach, FL. comes to Atlantic Ave after seven years of operation In Boynton Beach. “I am so happy to be able to have more space for display and offer something new and unique to the avenue”, Brookes said. Debbie brings a very varied creative background to her business. From the time she was eighteen and for the next twenty five years she owned hair salons in Eastern Pennsylvania. In her free time she started to take clay classes and studied at the Baum School of Art in Allentown, PA. Her husband’s career took her to Sarasota, so she sold her hair business and started to look at new opportunities. While in Sarasota she enrolled in the Ringling School of Art and using her own kiln she concentrated on tile work and decorative pieces in glass mosaic. Another career move took the Brookes family to Southern California. Luckily they lived on the South end of the City of Laguna Beach. Debbie quickly got immersed in the Laguna art scene. She became a student in the arts department of Saddleback College. The last move brought Debbie back to South Florida and the opening of Beachcomber Art. Her pieces are all handmade, personal and reflect the Florida Coastal live style. Beachcomber Art, 900 E Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach, Fl 33483 561-315-5717

N

ovember begins with an “Interstellar” blast into outer space on November 7. Matthew McConaughey stars as Cooper, an ordinary dad who is forced to be the hero and save the human race in “Interstellar.” The slogan for this Christopher Nolan sci-fi adventure is, “Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.” Along on a ride through a woven hole to another dimension are Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and Bill Irwin. “Big Hero 6” looks like a big, white marshmallow blob in this Walt Disney

computer-generated animated film, directed by Jon Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”). Actually Hero 6 is a robot created by a smart kid out to save the world. The setting is the fictional city of San Fransokyo and voices are provided by Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell, Damon Wayans, T.J. Miller and Jamie Chung. Earlier this year it was “Annabelle;” a creepy doll. Now we have “Jessabelle” for horror film enthusiasts. Sarah Snook (“Sleeping Beauty”) is Jessie, a girl who endures a horrific Louisiana car wreck and goes home, only to encounter a tormented spirit up to no good in a script written by Robert Ben Garant (“Night at the Museum”) and directed by Kevin Greutert (“Saw 3-D” and IV). November 14 How about a good cry? Novelist Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook”) is at it again with the romance “The Best of Me” adapted for the screen by director Michael Hoffman and a couple others. Michele Monaghan and James Marsden star as high school sweethearts Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole, reunited in their home town (New Orleans) twenty years after they broke up. Their younger selves are played by Liana Liberato and Luke Bracey. Even the title is dumb. Writer-directs Bobby and Peter Farrelly bring back dim bulbs Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) in “Dumb and Dumber To.” The story is set 20 years after the first one and has one of the guys looking for his lost child. Kathleen Turner co-stars, with Jennifer Lawrence playing her younger self. Also featured are Brady Bluhm, Rob Riggle and Rachel Melvin. Bennett Miller (“Moneyball”) directs the truth-based story “Foxcatcher,” which tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum), his older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) and eccentric billionaire John du Pont (Steve Carrell), who tries to coach the team for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, with disastrous results. Vanessa Redgrave plays du Pont’s disapproving mother Jean du Pont. Anthony Michael

Hall and Sienna Miller are featured. “Beyond the Lights” tells the story of the latest music superstar, Nori Jean (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, star of “Belle”), and Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker), the young cop assigned to her protection. Minnie Driver is Macy Jean and Danny Glover is Capt. David Nicol. Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Secret of Bees”) directs. TV personality Jon Stewart (“The Daily Show”) co-wrote, directs and produced “Rosewater,” based on the book by Maziar Bahari, a reporter who was imprisoned in Iran in 2009 and endured severe interrogation and torture. Bahari is played by Gael Garcia Bernal and others are Shohreh Aghdashloo, Kim Bodnia and Golshifteh Farahani. November 21 OK kids, here is the one you have been waiting for: Part Two of “Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” aka “Hunger Games: Mockingjay.” Jennifer Lawrence returns as heroic archer Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as her friend Peeta Mellark. Katniss has survived two of the brutal Hunger Games of District 12, but President Snow (Donald Sutherland) warns no one is safe. Also returning are Liam Hemsworth, Jenna Malone and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee. November 26 Are there penguins on the African island of Madagascar? There are now, with the computer-animated sequel “The Penguins of Madagascar.” Plucky penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private join forces with the North Wind spy organization, led by Agent Classified (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) to stop the evil Octavius Brine (voice of John Malkovich) from taking over the world. Just about everyone has had a horrible boss, so it comes as no surprise we have “Horrible Bosses 2” written and directed by Sean Anders (“Dumb and Dumber To”). Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman), Dale Arbus (Charlie Day) and Kurt Buckman (Jason Sudeikis) have decided to go into business for themselves, but a crafty investor pulls the rug out from their scheme so they decide to kidnap his son and hold him for ransom. Sounds reasonable. Big names include Jennifer Anniston, Chris Pine, Christoph Waltz, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx as Dean “MF” Jones.

“Before You Give Up, Do This…” And you’ll be surprised how simple it is… Dear Friend,

For the last 3 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with:

Some people come to my office and tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They come to me ready to give up.

• Headaches/Migraines • Restless leg syndrome • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness In Limbs • Athletic Injuries just to name a few…

That’s right, four out of five people who show up in my office have taken “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. But, that’s not what most people are looking for.

treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. I’ve been helping your neighbors here in Delray Beach for three years now. I have the low exam fee to help more people who need care.

Health (or the lack of it) very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me. Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine (he tells me there’s nerve pressure on my neck going to my head). The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Let me tell you about Natalia, my girlfriend. For 5 years, she suffered with bad low back pain and restless pain in her legs at night. Since she was a nurse she saw specialists who ordered tests. They put her on powerful medications yet she still suffered. At age 28, after suffering for years, she started chiropractic care here, and the pain in her legs is now only a rarity, and she has no low back pain at all.

Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “I am feeling better on so many levels. I went in because of some back pain and after my treatments I found my general health improving as well! I’m very happy with the care I am receiving from Dr. Elan!” (Joe Gillie, Delray Beach, FL) “This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) Exciting Offer - Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problems, and not just cover them up with drugs. When you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (before December 17th, 2014) you’ll receive the entire exam for $27. That includes xrays, paraspinal thermal imaging, postural analysis… and there are no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this exam normally costs $170. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or

(Ava, Franklin, and Dr. Elan) My assistant is Pam and she is a really great person. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. Of course, all people respond differently to care, and no doctor can (or should) guarantee a successful outcome. But, if you’ve tried everything except chiropractic, don’t give up yet! P.P.S. Shoulder Pain: A Neurological Approach

By Dr. Travis Lamperski

Most people think that when an individual is suffering from any joint pain they are an athlete or older adult. But when it comes to the shoulder joint anyone is at risk. Approximately 7.5 million people each year visited their doctor with shoulder pain. In fact, shoulders are the most common injured joints in the body.

Traumatic injuries, arthritis, poor muscle tone and inflammation in and around joints are common problems in adults, often causing severe pain, discomfort and immobility. Most often acute and chronic shoulder injuries involve the muscles, ligaments and tendon that support and move the shoulder rather than the bone itself. The unique and complex design of the shoulder joint provides a great degree of mobility, however; for increased mobility, stability is sacrificed. From a bony support perspective the shoulder is essentially unstable making it more susceptible to injuries like sprain and strains and degeneration. It is also highly researched that brainstem reflexes govern muscle tone in our bodies and play a role in chronic and repetitive injuries. Often times, dysfunction can occur within these reflexes leading to poor tone to the muscles of the rotator cuff. This lack of muscle tone leaves an individual more susceptible to injuries and instability. Genetics, environmental aspects, previous traumas and lifestyle choices can facilitate and sustain this dysfunction.

Common Rotator Cuff Injuries

Odds are that when you’re suffering from shoulder pain someone you know will say “it’s your rotator cuff” and most of the time they are correct. The rotator cuff is composed of four small muscles that are positioned around the shoulder and are responsible for moving and stabilizing the shoulder joint. Injuries to the rotator cuff muscles are by far the most common cause of shoulder pain and disability in adults. Tendonitis, tears and impingement syndrome are a few conditions that can affect the rotator cuff.

Tendonitis/Impingement Syndrome Tendonitis and impingement syndromes can cause pain in multiple locations in the shoulder. The pain is produced from irritation (rubbing) and inflammation to the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles. Often times an individual will experience mild to severe pain when the arm is raised over the head, out to the side of the body or when an individual places their hand in their pocket, localized swelling may also be present in some cases. Most patients complain that the pain makes it difficult for them to sleep, especially when they roll onto the affected shoulder. When impingement syndromes are not treated medically, repetitive irritation to the tendon may result in a tearing of the tendon or muscle.

Rotator Cuff Tear Rotator cuff tears occur suddenly due to high force direct trauma to the shoulder, a fall onto an outstretched hand and heavy lifting or pulling activities, but more often they develop over time due to repetitive or prolonged activities placing strain on the rotator cuff muscles. This repetitive strain over time creates micro tears within the belly of the muscle or ligaments causing pain and at times leading to weakness and inability to use the arm for normal daily activities, in general, the larger the tear the 44 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

more weakness it causes. A completely ruptured rotator cuff tendon makes it impossible for an individual to move their arm through normal ranges of motion or lift anything without assistance.

Treatment Treating shoulder injuries depends entirely on the cause of the problem. A thorough orthopedic and neurological examination is very important when diagnosing any shoulder issue because most of these injuries will respond very well to conservative (non-operative) management. The first goal with any care is to decrease pain and inflammation. High powered laser therapy is designed to create an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms and pain. Performing injury specific therapeutic exercises can make the difference between a properly rehabbed shoulder verses one that can develop biomechanical flaws later on in life. Utilizing cutting-edge neurological rehabilitative exercises such as onesided chiropractic adjustments and muscle specific fast stretching are essential. Neurological cognitive exercises and specific brain activation utilizing sound, light, touch, vibration and oculomotor exercises can help with establishing proper muscle tone within the body making you less susceptible to injuries and creating a more accurate body image. Dr. Travis Lamperski is a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician with The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology. He is currently working towards his post-doctorate diplomate in the field of Chiropractic Neurology. Our office provides specialized care for difficult cases of back-neck pain, numbness-tingling, vertigo-dizziness balance disorders, fibromyalgia, migraines, AD/HD, autism, and dyslexia. Peptides

The Anti-Aging Breakthrough in Skincare Products

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, MD

Many skincare products use peptides to treat wrinkles. But what are peptides? And do they actually make you look younger?

Peptides remain a buzz word in the world of anti-aging skincare due to their performance and their ability to be used by all skin types without causing irritation or sensitivity. They continue to evolve and have developed a cult following along the way based on their results. It all boils down to COLLAGEN and ELASTIN. Skin is made up mostly of collagen; it is the structural protein that gives skin its support and thickness. In fact, collagen makes up for 30% of the whole body’s protein content. Young people have lots of collagen and elastic smooth skin. In contrast, older people have much less collagen and thinner, more wrinkled skin. Collagen is a protein and it is made up of three long chains of amino acids strung together, like links of a chain. When it is broken down, short segments of 3-5 amino acids form, called peptides. The role peptides play in the body is an essential one. Aside from water, peptides are the most abundant molecule in the body. Proteins and peptides do more than strengthen the body; they are essential to every organism and are required for nearly every process within cells. Here are several ways that peptides work to improve wrinkles and preserve youth: 1. Peptides Signal the Skin to Make More Collagen The most popular peptide for cosmetic use is palmitoylpentapeptide (Matrixyl). “Matrixyl“ brought all the excitement to the cosmetic world several years ago when the NIH --National Institute of Health backed research on the ingredient “Matrixyl” (palmitoyl pentapeptide-3), which in the laboratory demonstrated its impressive ability to stimulate NEW collagen production in skin. Yes!! Sci-

46 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

entific proof including research presented at the World Congress of Dermatology in Paris France, attested that “Matrixyl”produced substantial improvements in wrinkle appearance more quickly than retinol and without causing irritation. 2. Neuropeptides Act like Botox Some peptides act to block transmission of signals from nerves to facial muscles, like the mechanism behind the action of Botox. According to research, studies of a specific peptide called Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3) showed in the laboratory that it can produce a mild, Botox-like effect, inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters that keep facial muscles from forming wrinkles and creating smoother softer skin. 3. Peptides Reduce Inflammation and Destruction of Collagen By reducing inflammation, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 and palmitoyloligiopeptide have been shown to reduce the cumulative amount of damage that occurs following exposure to UV light, pollution, internal stress, and other pro-inflammatory factors, therefore protecting natural collagen. Peptides are used for natural healing and regeneration of skin and to help remove damaged collagen. By protecting the integrity of elastin & collagen bundles, and minimizing the impact of free radical damage, these powerful peptides work to improve skin firmness and elasticity. 4. Peptides Act Like Growth Factor Some peptide formulations act like human growth factors, stimulating skin cells to make a quicker turnover, much like young skin. Nonapeptide-1 is a human growth factor peptide, derived from the melanocyte-stimulat-

ing-hormone. It blocks melanin synthesis and reduces the formation of unwanted pigmentation, allowing control over skin tone and preventing age spots. The cosmetic market place has become inundated with new peptide creams, but buyers should beware. Beauty is in the Water

{

By Kristin Heather

Mirroring the scale of the Earth in our tiny bodies, we are made up of 79% water. We are water: it fuels our life, our health, and the planet we live on. Yet, respect for the power of water is not always apparent.

We hear often: “drink more water for gorgeous skin,” and sure there are a host of reasons why water is great for the skin. It helps the full spectrum of detoxification in the body. It hydrates the cells, crucial for the skin to look young and healthy. But, what about the water we drink and use to wash our bodies and our face? We are water, and if we want to be beautiful, the water in us needs to be beautiful. Dr. Masura Emoto is a world-renowned researcher who studies the messages in water. His research is scientific proof of the power of words and intention. By using technology called Magnetic Resonance Analyzer (MRA), he was able to imprint water with specific vibrations that could be used to actually heal imbalances in the body. After years of research, and little support for his initial theories, he was able to crystallize water and record its physical state in photographs. He began to take photographs of water molecules taken from samples around the

48 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

world. He found that by exposing water to an image, a word, a thought, or music, the molecular structure of the water changed. He proved this by freezing the water drop after it was exposed and photographing the ice crystal that formed. Beautiful words, pictures, or music created beautiful crystals, while mean-spirited, negative words, images, or thoughts created malformed or misshapen crystals. Dr. Emoto introduced the acclaimed realization that water not only reflects the physical world around it, but also reflects the consciousness of the beings surrounding it. “Any living creature is made of water, says Dr. Emoto, so positive thoughts can make any related things positive and harmonized.” I hear so often women talking about themselves, their bodies, and their skin with negative words. So frequently, I hear a pimple or a wrinkle prompt the words “I am disgusting.” Dr. Emoto’s research teaches us of the power

these words actually have. If you are saying you are disgusting, the actual molecules in the water that make up 79% of you will be disfigured; you will be an expression of your malformed words and thoughts. And, we can take this a step further. Think about the affect the music you listen to, the words that other people say to you and around you, the thoughts that you have about yourself and your body. Everything has an effect, as you are an expression of the water inside of you and its beauty, the same way the frozen crystal is an expression of the thought, the music, or the words it is exposed to. The water we drink, that we use to wash our face is so important. Tap water, according to Dr. Emoto’s research, never shows beautiful crystals. And neither does the water that runs in pipes close to cities. Dr. Emoto’s research reveals that the water we use and drink every day is often not in line with the authentic beauty of nature, and therefore, not in support of the natural beauty of our body and skin. Think of water as another skin care product. Use only the purest form available and infuse it with the positivity that you seek in your life. And furthermore, respect the water that you are made of, knowing that the words and thoughts that you use to refer to yourself and others have a great effect on your outward expression and physical appearance. Oral Health Issues for Seniors

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

It’s important to be aware of conditions associated with aging that can impact your oral health

The Facts and Key Issues Even if you brush and floss regularly, you may face special issues in your senior years when it comes to your oral health. Wearing dentures, taking medications and general health conditions are just some of the issues many seniors face. Fortunately, your dentist and physician can help you meet most of these challenges quite successfully. There are key oral health issues that seniors should be aware of, including: • Cavities and decay on the root surfaces of the teeth are more common in older adults. It’s important to brush with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and see your dentist regularly. • Sensitivity can be an increasing problem as one ages. Your gums naturally recede over time, exposing areas of the tooth that are not protected by enamel. These areas are particularly prone to pain due to cold or hot foods or beverages. In severe cases, cold air, as well as sensitivity to sour and sweet drinks and food, can occur. If you experience sensitivity, try an anti-sensitivity toothpaste. If the problem persists, see your dentist because the sensitivity may be an indication of a more serious condition, such as a cavity or a cracked or fractured tooth. • Dry mouth is a common condition in seniors, and one that may be caused by medications or certain medical disorders. Left untreated, dry mouth can damage your teeth. Your dentist can recommend various methods to restore moisture in your mouth, as well as appropriate treatments or medications to help prevent the problems associated with dry mouth.

50 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

• Existing health conditions, such a diabetes, heart disease or cancer, can affect your oral health. Be sure to let your dentist know of any general health issues you’re facing so that he or she understands the scope of the situation and can help you meet your special requirements. • Dentures can make life easier for many seniors, but they require special care. Follow your dentist’s instructions carefully and see your dentist if any problems arise. An annual checkup is recommended for long-term denture wearers. Implants might be a viable option, too, and something you might want to discuss with your dentist. • Malnutrition (poor nutrition) can be caused by not being able to eat healthy

and crunchy fresh foods. Some of the causes may be dry mouth, broken and/ or decayed teeth and painful gums caused by periodontal (gum) disease and poorfitting dentures. • Gum disease is a potentially serious condition that can affect people of all ages, but especially people over 40 years old. A number of factors can increase the severity of gum disease, including: - Bad diet - Poor oral hygiene - Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer - Environmental factors such as stress and smoking - Certain medications that can influence gum condition Good News The earliest stages of gum disease are reversible, so it’s important to take action early if you think your oral health is not stellar. Regular dental checkups can ensure early detection and treatment of gum disease. Best of all, it is easy to prevent gum disease from developing it in the first place by practicing proper oral hygiene. Your teeth can last a lifetime with proper home care and regular dental checkups. No matter what your age, you can keep your teeth and gums health by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups. 5 Shoulder Exercises for Tennis Players

{

By Brandon Flanagan

A powerful and stable shoulder is one of the most important physical characteristics of a successful tennis player.

A strong shoulder is not only essential for a player’s performance, but also for preventing injury. As a ball and socket joint, the shoulder has a large range of motion, which without proper strengthening can become unstable. I’ve prescribed five shoulder exercises that will not only help prevent injury, but will also enhance performance. 1. Front Raise. Holding light dumbbells, stand straight with good posture, raising each dumbbell in front of your body until the dumbbell is shoulder level. Perform 3 sets of 15 reps. The front raise will strengthen the anterior deltoid. The anterior deltoid is used to generate power on the groundstrokes and the serve. A strong anterior deltoid will also help reduce the strain on the tendons and ligaments of the rotator cuff. 2. Lateral Raise. Using light dumbbells, stand straight with the weights at your side. Raise the weights out to the side of your body until you reach 90 degrees. Lower the weights back to the starting position. Repeat for 3 sets of 15 reps. The lateral raise strengthens the lateral deltoid, which is especially important for the backhand. Whether you hit a one handed or two handed backhand, having a strong lateral deltoid will greatly improve your stroke. 3. Bent Over Reverse Fly. Using light dumbbells, assume a bent over position with the knees slightly flexed and the back straight. Open up at the chest and raise the weights from in front to slightly behind the body. Perform 3 sets of 15 reps. The reverse fly will strengthen the rear deltoids along with muscles of the upper back. Having a strong posterior aspect of the shoulder will specifically help on

52 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

the backhand groundstroke and volley. Strengthening the rear deltoid will also help prevent injury by stabilizing the shoulder joint. 4. External Rotation. Stand sideways to a resistance tube. Use your outside hand, keeping your upper arm tucked against your body, then externally rotate the shoulder away from the body. Perform for both right and left sides. The external rotation exercise will strengthen the small rotator cuff muscles, such as the infrapinatus and teres minor. Complete 3 sets of 15 reps. This exercise will help prevent rotator cuff injuries. 5. Internal Rotation. Now using the hand closest to the tube, keep your arm against your body and rotate your shoulder internally. Again, perform this exercise for both right and left arms. The internal rotation will help strengthen the subscap-

ularis, which is important to shoulder stability. Complete 3 sets of 15 reps. Similar to the external rotation, this exercise will help prevent rotator cuff injuries. All tennis players can adopt these five exercises to stay injury free and enhance their performance on the court! ageless hair

{

By mark hasche

Recently in South Florida and in many other parts of the country as well, on TV plastic surgery has taken an almost “routine part of aging” as say, braces at the age of 12. There seems to be no reason anyone should look over the age of 35, right?

As this becomes the norm, what isn’t discussed is the 35 year old face with the sixty year old hair, yes, as harsh as it sounds, covering those tell tale little reminders (incision sights) with fine, limp, or frizzy covered gray hair just doesn’t make the grade. Lucky for you we have the procedures needed to finish what the doctors started. The only difference is our operating room is filled with fashion forward young stylists working to the beat of dance music instead of nurses huddled together in scrubs. It’s been long said that stylists are also psychologists; we are also quickly taking the lead in making people look years younger with new hair care advancements in the fight against aging. We have a few prescribed treatments for turning back the hair clock. The first of our hair ailments is grey hair. It comes in with a completely different texture; a texture that is usually comparable to that of Brillo. For this we prescribe a keratin smoothing treatment. This hour and a half treatment will take your hair to a soft silky relaxed state, like a 16 year olds head of hair. Ailment 2 is thin, fine, limp hair. The hair doctors would then hook your hair up with the latest in hair extensions (Platinum Seamless). Damage free extensions that will restore your hair back to the full-

er more lustrous density of years gone by, all done in under an hour without anesthesia. Now the third ailment we will touch on is hair color. Over highlighted hair, mimicking gray hair is never a good choice. In most cases we opt for warmer tones in base and highlight colors. As this is just a few of the aging hair issues one last trick is, why Botox when you can bang? Yes a full fringe (bang) can take years off your look by covering any fine lines that could give your age away. This gives all new meaning to “only your stylist really knows,” and remember you are only as young as your hair tells you are. So, the lesson here is: if you are going to spend a few thousands on a new face, set aside some for the hair that’s going to frame it! Divos Out! Mark Hasche and Peter DeRosa, stylists and owners of PeterMark Salon in Delray Beach, have a combined total of over twenty years of professional hairstyling experience. Ness Lebel has been dancing for the past 70 years. He danced in nightclubs on four continents and still remembers the spectacular band and desert view at his favorite nightclub in Cairo.

Joy and Bill Banton are also smitten with the action (and reaction) of dancing. They reunited after many years on the dance floor of a restaurant for their first official date. You could say the date (and the dancing) was a success because they have been married for the past seven years. They continue to look forward to every dance at the Delray Beach Club. “We go dancing four times a month at the club. We love the music and I get to hold my beautiful bride’s hand,” said Bill. Joy, who is the social chairman, can’t think of anything else more rewarding from a social or physical perspective than dancing. “We have so many different types of dances at the club and we get to sing along with the music and dance.” They have a point. Very few private clubs have dances at least twice a month during season. And not many clubs have the diversity that the Delray Beach Club offers. On November 8th they kick off the season with an Opening Gala Dinner Dance (with a big band) and throughout the season there are dances quite often. Did I tell you the dining room faces the ocean? If you have two left feet, don’t worry, there are other activities to challenge your body and mind. But, if dancing moves you both physically and spiritually and you don’t have a partner, don’t fret. The club has dance hosts to glide along the dance floor with you. Although Joy relishes the ability to meet new people at the dances she knows the Delray

Beach Club has a lot more to offer. That’s an understatement. The ocean front slice of club life may look stately and selfcontained, but this private club has more than meets the eye. They have a full menu of tennis activities that take place at their Har-Tru® Tennis Courts. There is a mixed doubles tournament with lunch in November as well as half singles tournaments and a Holiday Sunday Social in December. Every Saturday morning is cardio-tennis with drills and invigorating music and Tuesday morn-

ings are complimentary ladies tennis lessons (mens are Thursdays). If you think living in Florida is a snooze away from the hyper activity of the big city you left behind, think again. The Delray Beach Club has a Fitness Center with hoist, cable and elliptical machines, stair climber, treadmills, recumbent, spin and stepper bikes, body weight straps, light free weights and more. There are group exercise classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Core, Dance and Aquatic Fitness in the outdoor oceanfront pool.

The Fitness Center also has Spa Services with massages, waxing, facials, body wraps and massage therapists for Reflexology, Craniofacial, Neuromuscular and Swedish massage. For your cerebral side there is a new lunch and learn series called “Outstanding Women of the Arts.” The series will feature women in music, theater, the arts and literature. There is also a Book Club, Art Talk Club, Art Classes, Fashion Shows, Bridge Games and Canasta (with lessons). The evening events are legendary – and are what makes The Delray Beach Club such a joyful place. In November they have a “Rat Pack Tribute” with music, comedy and memories of Sinatra and his boys. There are also themed dinners, Lobster nights with live entertainment, casino nights, clam bakes, jazz brunches, Halloween and Kentucky

Derby Parties and holiday celebrations. One of the most informal (yet all inclusive social events) is their Friday night “Mix and Mingle” outside by the pool. Not only is everyone welcome but they have music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. If you were to try to categorize the typical Delray Beach Club Member, it would be a hard task. Members range in age from one to 100. There are single people, couples, seniors and young members. With the influx of younger members come families with children of all ages. The club welcomes children and offers them a multitude of special activities. If you’re a morning person start your day at their Coffee Talk by the Sea. Enjoy coffee and conversation under the poolside tent and then take a dip in the swimming pool. Recent studies at both Harvard and the

Mayo Clinic equate exercise and social activity with health and wellness (both mental and physical). With all the activities and camaraderie, there isn’t much not to like at the Delray Beach Club. As Ness Label likes to say, “The Delray Beach Club is the best. There isn’t a restaurant or club with an ocean view like this one and the people are so nice. I play tennis, swim in the ocean and the pool, and the dancing is just wonderful.” If you want to illuminate your life – and enjoy every moment to the max call Diane Roberts at 561-278-6226, ext. 15 to find out more about membership. Combining the flexibility and accountability of local leadership with national experience and a global approach to marketing, buying, and selling residential real estate, the Fite Shavell team of dedicated Real Estate professionals brings unparalleled expertise to the unique demands of our local market. And, their model is working. Founded just six years ago, Fite Shavell & Associates has been a consistent leader in Palm Beach real estate sales. “We started with zero listings and no agents. Now, we have more than 100 agents in four offices across the county to serve our clients. In just six years, we have sold over $2 billion of Palm Beach County real estate and have achieved an average sales price of over $1.2M,” states Fite. The firm expanded to the north end of the county three years ago with offices in North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens and is now excited to be serving southern Palm Beach County through its new Delray Beach office. “The City of Delray Beach has a great downtown; Atlantic Avenue draws people from all over the world to its restaurants, tennis and golf tournaments and because of its active vibe. The City has been up and coming and now it has really arrived,” says Fite. “Delray Beach is still affordable but has all the amenities for snowbirds and the full time year round population that is continuing to grow. Delray is a great place to raise a family and becoming more of an annual destination.” “Luxury residential real estate brokerage is the art of integrating the best team of experienced real estate agents with personal networking and targeted print, online and social media marketing, to find the right buyer for the right seller’s property; and doing it over and over again,” says Fite. Fite Shavell believes that another key to its success is its commitment to out-marketing, out-selling, and out-recruiting their competition. Thirteen seasoned, local real estate experts specializing in Gulf Stream, Manalapan, Ocean Ridge, Delray Beach and Boca Raton have joined the Fite Shavell team in their new state-of-the-art office at 648 George Bush Blvd. The current team includes: Terri Berman, Loren Beron, Nicholas Crosby, Valerie Coz, Dana Friedfeld, Nancy Furman, Laura Gallagher, Kelley Johnson, David Kemp, Linda Lake, Megan Lake, Mac McFadden and Thomas Murray. Cocktails and conversation are two of the most valued sidekicks when hanging out in a cigar bar. It’s also one of the reasons that locals (and tourists) flock to Delray Beach’s largest Cigar Bar, Smoke Inn Delray.

The lounge area is a personal oasis of calm to have a drink, a smoke and watch a game with all the comforts you have (or wish you had) at home. There are leather chairs and couches that beckon you to sit back and relax, and there are enough great cigars, fine wine and liquors to insure that your happiness quotient is in high gear.

The antique retro bar is a place that replicates the leisure and luxury of times past when life was as uncomplicated and joy was boundless. It is also the place where drinks are poured, friendships are made and cigars are cherished. If you want to sit quietly and dream – go ahead – no one will invade your space. But if you want to chat with friends, or make new ones, the Smoke Inn Delray bar is the place to be. Their friendly staff and large walk-in Humidor reflects the passion that went into creating this landmark cigar bar on Federal Hwy. They have over 600 of the world’s finest cigars in an environmentally sound humidor maintained electronically for optimal conditions. They specialize in top premium

If you’re into ecigarettes they also sell vapor products and accessories as well. Since Smoke Inn Delray is a place of fast action and slow enjoyment they have everything to make your time there memorable and pleasurable. The bar is always stocked with fine wines, craft beer, bourbon, scotch or whiskey with names like Angel Envy, Johnnie Walker Blue, Dewars 12 and 18, fine single malt scotch, Louis X111, Tawny Port and more. They also have the coveted (and rare) 2007 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. They recently added a “Flight Special,” which is a sample of different whiskey, scotch and bourbons for only $16. Names like Hudson, Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Dewars White Label 12 and 18 are included in this special. Their happy hour is Monday to Friday from 4pm -7pm with 50 percent off all cocktails. They also sell Ketel One Vodka for only $5 a glass all day every day. It’s been a labor of love for owner Vincent Prestigiacomo, who is a licensee of The Smoke Inn chain of cigar lounges started by Abe Dababneh. It’s been two years now and Vincent has imprinted his own brand of lively libation and cigar pairing expertise. Cassie keeps the spirits flowing

That is why Smoke Inn Delray carries on the tradition of activities that patrons come to enjoy and inhabit as often as possible. On November 26th (the day before Thanksgiving) they are having a Cigar Pairing Event with Illusione Cigar Company and Dewars. There will be a raffle, buffet, promotional cigar box specials and lots of fun outside on the outdoor patio area. If you haven’t been to Smoke Inn Delray then you may not know they added comfy couches, large flat screen TV’s and an area for special events that include Poker Nights on Thursdays and live music Friday and Saturday nights outside. There’s also Bar Trivia Nights with a DJ on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm. You can earn points and get free drinks, cigars and gift cards. It’s events like these that make Vincent proud to own Smoke Inn Delray. “In the past two years we have become the premiere cigar bar in Delray Beach. We are the exclusive cigar vendor for events sponsored by the

Chamber of Commerce and will be at the Delray Beach Wine & Seafood Festival in November. We have so many special events and a great clientele. Business has exceeded our expectations because we have created a very special place for people to come.” There are others who feel the same as Vincent. Jerry Granato is one of them. “I come here every day. I enjoy the people, the cigar selection and the atmosphere. It’s like a home away from home. I also watch football and sporting events there.” Gary Hollandar couldn’t agree more. “I love it here because the people are great and the assortment of fine cigars is excellent. This is a fun place and the people you meet are really nice. There’s a lot of camaraderie and I enjoy the outdoor patio as well.” Smoke Inn Delray (Open every day of the week late) 202 NE 6th Ave – two blocks north of Atlantic Ave. Delray Beach - 561-819-1212 http://www.smokeinndelray.com

Big Year for DBMC By Stephen Chrisanthus Photos by Aaron Lurie, VMA Studios

Big things came from small beginnings this year as the four person marketing machine know as the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative took South Florida Tourism Marketing by storm with a flurry of awards, nominations, and successful campaigns. Stephen and Jarrod

It’s been a fantastic year in Delray Beach for tourism. Hotel rates and economic development are up, and the often slower summer months didn’t seem to loose as much steam as they put off. Over the last two decades, Delray Beach has been dramatically transformed from a quaint, quiet “Village by the Sea” to the “Most Fun Small Town in the USA,” a year-round tourist magnet with the most dynamic thoroughfare of hot restaurants, nightclubs and cultural activities in Palm Beach County – and credit for much of this business, retail and hospitality boom goes to the DBMC’s small but mighty team of Stephanie Immelman, Stephen Chrisanthus, Jarrod White and Tiffany Mazer. A successful partnership between the City of Delray Beach, the Community Redevelopment Agency and the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, the primary mission of the DBMC is to attract people to the City, create a positive economic impact and increase awareness of Delray Beach. During the last year alone, DBMC Special Events (100-Foot Christmas Tree / First Night, July 4th Celebration, ON THE AVE) have attracted hundreds of thousands of participants, residents and out-of-county visitors alike, generating a positive economic impact of $7,775,000 and millions of positive media

impressions. “People across the country recognize Delray Beach in large part because of the efforts of the DBMC and because of the events it coordinates,” said Melissa Carter, Marketing Director for the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. In addition, the DBMC has successfully launched five major Destination Marketing programs over the last year-and-a-half, including the Hot Here: It’s Always Cool in Delray Beach summer marketing campaign, which was designed to attract out-of-state visitors during the summer and shoulder months, and Beach Buddies, a fun and funny joint marketing campaign with Marina del Rey in California that will include cross promotions, a new marketing mascot (Swinton the Turtle) and an aggressive social media campaign. These efforts have not only gained them recognition in the county and state but nationally and internationally. Just weeks after the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative picked up 7 prestigious SUNsational Awards at the 20th anniversary conference of the Florida Festivals & Events Association, they picked up another 7 awards at the International Festivals and Events Association Convention & Expo in Kansas City, Missouri. It has now been announced that the DBMC has been named one of three finalists for the 2014 Providencia Award. This is Palm Beach County’s most important symbol of recognition for the local tourism/hospitality industry that generates an annual economic impact of nearly $7 billion in the local economy, welcomes six million visitors a year, supports 60,000 industry jobs and helps to ensure Florida remains a tax-free state. Discover The Palm Beaches bestows the annual Providencia Award to an individual, institution, corporation or organization that is making an extraordinary and positive impact on local

tourism. “The 2014 Providencia Award finalists represent some of the incredible tourism assets that The Palm Beaches have to offer,” said Jorge Pesquera, President and CEO of Discover the Palm Beaches. With beginning of the holiday season upon us the DBMC will be kicking it into high gear, so be on the lookout for more unique events and innovative campaigns from the creative cast of four. “The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative has been and will continue to be an integral force multiplier in the ongoing growth of Delray Beach as a major tourist attraction – as well as the perfect place to live, work and play,” said Stephanie Immelman.

Mercedes-Benz is a pretty easy car to fall in love with. Perhaps not the same love you might have for your spouse or parents but love nonetheless.

JONATHAN MARTIN STEPPING INTO THE 2015 C300 4 MATIC 66 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Just open the door of one of Mercedes-Benz of Delray’s new models and your endorphins will start to peak. Take their new S550 Coupe for example. This dynamic sexy sleek car has everything one might need to feel like James Bond (minus the bodyguard). With Swarovski crystals in the headlamp, a 12-inch navigation screen command unit and double pane windows, this car is a testament to MercedesBenz commitment to excellence. There are a limited number of these cars available, which makes them even more sought after. But it’s not the small number of cars that are making people sign up (and leave deposits) for the first cars off the line. It’s the smooth lines, the quiet drive, the censors that alert you to potential danger and the 360 degree camera with views from all sides. It also has a 4.6 liter V8 engine double turbo engine with 430 horsepower. In the glove department of the S550 is a phone or iPad charger, a digital odometer and “Designo” upgrade interior with panoramic sliding glass roof. If you ask Mercedes-Benz of Delray Internet Sales Manager Christopher

Plasencia he will tell you that it’s an exciting time to work for Mercedes-Benz because everything they make is magical. Plasencia has a point. All you have to do is check out their new C300 Mercedes and you will get exactly what Plasencia and his sales partner Jonathan Martin mean when they say these cars are state of the art. The C300 is a bigger and more luxurious car than before and has sophisticated technology. There is front screen navigation, a park watch video, LED headlamps and fiber-optic LED tail-lamps. For the music lover there’s a Burmester Premium Surround Sound System, heated front seats, 7-speed automatic transmission and two overdrive ratios to enhance fuel-efficiency. The car has 241 horsepower, roadside assistance for four years (or 50,000 miles) and “attention assist” if you get drowsy or lose control of the car. A fuel-saving ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at traffic lights, or whiles the car is idling. When you take your foot off the brake the engine restarts and the car accelerates. It also gets 31 miles per gallon on the highway (24 in the city) and you can get Luxury 17-inch multispoke wheels, Burl Walnut or Linden wood trim, ventilated front seats, power front passenger seat with memory, Illuminated front door sills and Multicolor LED ambient lighting. There’s another new face at MercedesBenz of Delray, and it’s not a salesperson, it’s their state-of-the-art GLA front wheel drive SUV with a starting price tag of $33,000. “Mercedes made this car affordable with a 4- cylinder turbo charged motor for the younger customer (or family),” said Martin. This slightly smaller SUV gets great gas mileage and a freestanding color screen, intuitive

central controller and a 5.8-inch display and Bluetooth® for audio streaming. There are multimedia options for navigation, music, online features and a 7-inch screen to make your car trip more pleasurable. There are traditional Mercedes-Benz “power domes” on the new GLA250 hood and a 208-hp turbo and Direct Injection with advanced rapid-multispark ignition. It also has ECO Start/Stop that will automatically shut off the engine at red lights to save fuel, then restart when you move. The best part is that Mercedes-Benz knows that you live by the wire and thrive with your smart gadgets. That’s why you can connect your computer or Smartphone to your GLA. It uses new apps, remote vehicle features and online search capabilities. To keep you and your family safe, the car comes with radarbased technology that alerts you if you’re ap-

proaching a vehicle (or stationary object) that could cause a potential accident. In the new GLA you can hook up your computer or Smartphone by using mbrace®. The car also has its own Wi-Fi hotspot. The mbrace (that is standard) combines advanced cloud-based and GPS technology with 24hour support. Although there is a lot of talk about technology, smart cars and smart phones, being safe is the biggest priority when driving. That’s why Mercedes-Benz has standard safety features such as radar-based Collision Prevention Assist Plus (with autonomous braking) and Attention Assist to help sense a drowsy driver. There is also Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assists to make highway driving easier and safer. If you’re not horsepower obsessed or dual turbo engine curious and see your MercedesBenz as an extension of your fashion taste, then rest assured you can get white or light interior and exterior colors that will meet (and exceed) your color code of excellence. Mercedes-Benz of Delray is that special place in the stratosphere that caters to their client’s and offers the best cars on the planet. They have almost 1000 new Mercedes-Benz models and are competitively priced. Like they say, “You can drive the Mercedes-Benz luxury you expect at a price you may never have expected.” Just be prepared to fall in love at first sight. It’s easy to do at Mercedes-Benz of Delray. 12 Thankful Things to Be

for in

Delray beach

By linda brown

1

Sometimes we can be a little hard on ourselves in Delray Beach. I’d like to think that’s because we care so much and when we see something that concerns us we speak out. Last month, in a local newspaper we heard Delray compared to the “Titanic”--the ship not the movie. Ouch!! So we thought we’d get you into the Thanksgiving mood by continuing a tradition we have here at Atlantic Ave Magazine, our annual list of 12 things to be grateful for in our community. Gratitude is important because it reminds us how good some things truly are. For your consideration and in random order:

The Delray Beach Initiative- founded by local businessman Chuck Halberg, DBI exists to give back to local charities and the group--still in its infancy-has supported the Knights of Pythagorus Mentoring Network, Pine Grove Elementary School, the Milagro Center and the Achievement Center for Children and Families. It’s very mission is gratitude, another word for giving back.

2

Lake Ida Dog Park- This county owned facility sits prominently in the middle of the city of Delray and attracts hundreds of pets and their owners giving dogs of all sizes a place to run and play while people socialize and marvel at the different breeds. Almost always busy and always fun.

3

Dezzy’s Second Chance- Founder Sandra Dezelan can be found most weekends rescuing abandoned pets and seeking adoptive families. She’s a staple

68 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

at The Green Market and has a heart the size of Florida devoting her life to animals who need her. She’s an angel. Period.

4

Four Corners Linton and US 1What a difference a year makes. All four corners of Linton Boulevard and U.S. 1 have seen exciting new developments including a Trader Joe’s, a Fresh Market, a new Zona Fresca and a soon to be opened Chick Fil-A and LA Fitness. Sure we miss the movies and it’s sometimes hard to find a parking spot but it’s great to see investment occurring off the ave. We are also excited to see a new Buffalo Wild Wings and Starbucks opening on a newly re-energized Linton corridor.

5

A Belief in Delray- Speaking of investment, we think it’s great to see development and job creation happening south of the ave and on West Atlantic, a long time focus. Between a new Fairfield Inn, plans for an expanded Sundy House and

a major investment being planned by a development team for West Atlantic it appears that Delray is sustaining its run of success.

6

Human Powered Delray- this grassroots organization led by Bruce Bastian and others has injected intelligent discussion into how we get around our bustling city. They do rigorous research, have big ideas and do their best to engage and educate the community. A citizen movement to watch.

7

Healthy Delray- The Palm Healthcare Foundation has selected Delray Beach and Jupiter for a five year $1 million effort to improve behavioral health in our community. This effort will be community driven and supported by data and cutting edge resources. It’s still new and being shaped but keep your eye on this effort. We should be grateful to have been chosen. And we were chosen because of Delray’s legendary ability to get things done.

8

Community Gardens- These grass roots efforts on Swinton and Frog Alley have built community, grown food for families and taught our kids important lessons about agriculture and where our food comes from. They are to be applauded, small but important efforts, are what is known as urban acupuncture. I’m grateful they are here.

9

Worthing Place- There was a lot controversy and protests when this 93 unit to the acre complex was proposed in the late 90s. Several years of litigation ensued, with the city winning every single time and so finally the project was built. Now home to a vibrant residential base that supports downtown businesses, you can hardly tell the project is there. It has also given us some good restaurants and lots of jobs.

10

Friday Concerts- The Delray Center for the Arts hit on a winning formula when they launched their free concert series. The event has become a gathering spot for thousands who can enjoy music, wine, the weather, sky and good company in the best downtown in Florida.

11

Police and Fire Departments- It has been a rough year for Delray’s bravest and Delray’s finest. Pension concerns, labor issues, crime and staffing challenges. But there would be no Delray without the men and women in our Police Department. We would have truly sunk like the Titanic if community policing hadn’t made it safe for people to come and enjoy our city, its neighborhoods and our award winning downtown. They made it safe to visit and invest and we have seen value grow exponentially as a result of their hard work and diligence over the decades. The department is not perfect and neither is Delray, but good officers have made a profound difference here and they deserve our support and thanks. Same goes for our fire rescue personnel who are skilled, professional and always there for us in an emergency. We should be grateful for their dedication.

It’s not just your hormones. It’s your health. Our advanced HRT approach adds years to your life while subtracting them from your age. Feeling younger and living longer isn’t simply a matter of replacing hormones. It’s about gaining a thorough understanding of your overall health. At the biostation,™ our comprehensive approach starts with an extensive blood analysis that uncovers disease markers years before symptoms associated with cardiovascular disease or other diseases surface. If hormone replacement therapy is the recommended treatment to help you achieve optimal wellness, our custom protocol will have you feeling better in no time. For more information, contact 561.221.0078 or visit thebiostation.com.

12

The People- Last but certainly not least, this Thanksgiving season we are grateful for all of the fascinating people who make Delray Delray. Community is about how we treat each other and whether we can work together to seize opportunities and meet challenges. Delray continues to attract and grow a lot of talented people. That will ensure that we will never ever sink.

We wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | November 2014 69 BIO 37854 AtlanticAve_HP V 4C_General_MECH.indd 1

A Classic Barber Shop With Class By diane feen

{

pHOTOs BY MELISSA KORMAN

When Antonio Lanzetta opened a barbershop in Delray Beach over two years ago he wasn’t sure how it would turn out. He had the drive and the passion to create a space where men could let their hair down (literally) and enjoy a uniquely male grooming experience.

From L-R: Stephen, Carlos, Antonio, Johnny, Danny

He designed the interior of Lanzetta’s as the quintessential upscale men’s barbershop. The rustic wood beam ceiling, comfortable leather barber chairs and black and white photos of men who changed the world speak volumes about Lanzetta’s goal. If you walk around this graceful site for grooming you’ll see James Dean, Albert

70 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Einstein, Jimmy Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior and Dean Martin. There’s also a wood plank American flag on the wall, a refrigerator up front for thirsty patrons and six barbers that cater to their client’s grooming needs. They offer haircuts (with straight razor shave on

sideburns and neck), a classic haircut with shampoo, blow-dry and style, old-fashioned scissor over comb, clipper haircuts, straightedge hot lather shaves, mustache, goatee and beard detailing and complimentary ear, nose and eyebrow trims with every service. And no one is happier with all the suc-

cess of Lanzetta’s than its creator Antonio. “I had a hunch this formula would work well in Delray Beach. As a man who just wanted a good haircut, I didn’t like going to fancy women’s salons. And as a professional I wanted to go somewhere better than a discount chop-shop. So I created Lanzetta’s, a Classic Barbershop where men can get a great haircut (or a hot lather shave) and leave feeling confident, fresh and renewed.” Luckily Antonio’s hunch was right on. Even on scorching hot days in Pineapple Grove, when the streets are quiet and the noise level is at siesta grade, Antonio is busy cutting hair. There are many days that his calendar is booked and customer’s have to wait their turn. But to make sure that everyone is happy he recently added a new barber so that clients can come to Lanzetta’s when they feel the urge to clean up their act (so to speak). For Randy Dennis going to Lanzetta’s is a no brainer. The Ohio native spent quite a lot of time looking for a barber who understood his grooming needs and he finally hit the jackpot at Lanzetta’s. “I have been coming to Lanzetta’s for two years and I like it here. The staff are nice, they offer you something to drink, and every time I come I get a good haircut. I must have been to ten bad places before I found this one. I live in Boynton Beach but I wouldn’t go anywhere else for a haircut.” James Lopez is in total agreement with Dennis. As Danny was cutting his hair you could see he was in that male comfort zone where time and space collide. When asked what he liked most about Lanzetta’s he had this to say. “It’s like a family here. I am really comfortable and they know you and know what kind of haircut I like. I must have recommended this place to 15 or 20 of my friends and now they come here. If you want a good haircut come to Lanzetta’s because they know what they’re doing.” Lanzetta’s clients are encouraged to relax and listen to classic Sinatra tunes or watch a sporting event on one of their flat screen TV’s. “A good haircut or shave is as much about the experience as the end result. My dream was to create a retrostyle barbershop (and haven for men) that pays homage to the classic barbershops of the past.” By looking at the results (and the popularity of this barbershop) one can say for sure that Antonio has created the perfect spot for men who want a comfortable place to unwind and reboot. Of course they also get the haircut or shave of their choice. The shop is sophisticated, yet down-to-earth with a gentlemen’s vibe. There’s a reason that this alpha male (Antonio) wanted to create the perfect space for men to get their groom on. “Men are working longer hours today and they’re working harder than ever before. That’s why it’s nice to offer them a barbershop that caters to men in an upscale masculine environment.” Come to where male grooming is at its zenith. Lanzetta’s is a place where camaraderie and comfort intersect and a great haircut is always on tap. LANZETTA’S CLASSIC BARBERSHOP 164 NE 2nd Avenue Delray Beach (in Pineapple Grove) 561-276-8601 www. A correlation between

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

Hypoglycemia and Hypothyroidism

Hypoglycemia is associated with palpitations, anxiety, and shaky feelings.

“All of a sudden, I get nervous. My heart races. I get dizzy to point I have trouble walking. Dr. Woliner, is there any hope for me?” Andrea did look nervous. “Don’t worry, we’ll get to the bottom of it. In the meantime, perhaps it would be a good idea for my staff to bring you something to drink, or better, something to eat.” “That would be nice. Ironic how you said that. When I skip meals I feel worse, and when I eat, I feel better.” “When you were getting your vitals taken by my medical assistant, I had a chance to read your intake questionnaire. You’re a walking-talking case of Hypoglycemia.[1]” “You mean ‘Low Blood Sugar’?” “Yes, I’m talking about sugar control problems causing the symptoms you are frustrated with.” I continued on. “Your medical history included several ER admissions for panic attacks, prescriptions for Xanax and Lexapro, but there wasn’t a thorough evaluation of hypoglycemia, and definitely not a good evaluation of thyroid issues that contribute to it.” “Is that why my neck sticks out like this?” “At this point, I don’t know for sure. There are several types of thyroid problems, and at least two types contribute to hypoglycemia, and even more confusingly, hypoglycemia can cause thyroid problems too!” “I’m glad I’m recording our consultation with my App on my iPhone. That way I can listen to this over again with my husband. I’ll admit I’m not following you that well.” “Since this is being recorded, perhaps I start from the beginning and explain hypoglycemia and how the thyroid relates to it. Stop me anytime in the middle should you have any questions. Okay?” Andrea nodded. “’Hypo’ means ‘low’, ‘glyce’ means ‘sugar’, and ‘emia’ refers to your ‘blood’. Hypo-glyc-emia. The number one sugar floating through our bloodstream is glucose, so a lot of people use the terms ‘blood sugar’ and ‘blood glucose’ interchangeably.” “I’m following you so far.” “Every cell of our body, all of our tissues, from your brain to your muscles to your skin, and even your hair - they all use sugar (glucose). Now, if there isn’t enough sugar in your bloodstream, it stands to reason there might not be enough sugar in your brain and other cells. They wouldn’t function that well.” “And if I was low brain sugar, I could be dizzy, irritable, and nervous?” “Yes, but that is only part of the reason why. When your brain realizes the sugar level gets too low, it realizes that other bad things could happen, such as you passing out, so, it sends signals to your endocrine glands, most notably your thyroid and adrenals, to stimulate your body to make its own glucose.[2]” “And that’s a good thing, right?” “Yes, but if your body isn’t working the way it is supposed to, when you realize your blood sugar level is getting too low, you might overcompensate for a sluggish thyroid with adrenaline.[3]” “This is where I’m starting to lose you.” “Okay, I’ll slow down a little. One stress hormone, adrenaline, raises blood sugar, but if you have to overuse adrenaline, because other hormones such as thyroid aren’t working as well as they should, you get the side effects of adrenaline too. They include palpitations, anxiety, and shaky feelings.” Andrea’s light bulb went off in her head. “I got it now, or at the very least, that protein bar is kicking in. It was really yummy. So how does the thyroid come into all of this?” “When your blood sugar drops, your body will compensate by making more thyroid hormone.[4]” “And mine isn’t doing that?” “It might be trying, but honestly, I don’t know yet. I only met you an hour ago, and I haven’t done any blood tests or imaging tests of my own. I do see on your questionnaire that you have other symptoms of hypothyroidism (constipation, cold intolerance, brain fog), and my physical exam showed decreased reflexes. So I think we got to look deeper with both imaging and blood tests.” Andrea returned a week later to go over her results, MP3 recorder in tow. “Your thyroid ultrasound showed a diffuse enlargement and multiple small nodules, but I think that is in response to your low blood sugar, not a cause of it. Although your screening TSH test was ‘in range’, more in-depth testing showed suboptimal

amounts of T3, along with evidence of an autoimmune thyroid disease called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Unfortunately, antidepressants can interfere with T3 metabolism, making hypoglycemia and other symptoms worse.[5] And more confusing to doctors who are forced to see patients every 5-10 minutes (as opposed to the 40-80 minute visits here), is that gene variations can cause ‘T3 resistance’ and hypothyroidism with normal T3 blood levels.[6]” “And what will you do to fix me?” “Even though I’m a board-certified family medicine physician who still does mainstream medicine (I admit my own patients to the hospital), my practice is called ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a Functional Medicine approach with my patients, incorporating everything from behavior changes to diet to exercise, and will prescribe supplements available over-the-counter, not just prescription drugs. We will eat frequently and are going to add Vitamin D, which your blood tests also said you were low in. But most importantly, I think you need to try a low dose of thyroid hormone. Not Synthroid (T4 only thyroid), but a different brand that has some T3 in it as well.” Three months later, Andrea was back for a routine follow-up visit. “The only time my heart races is when I take my kids to Universal Studios. Does that mean I’m fixed?” “Everything looks good from my end. Let’s space out your visits then.” REFERENCES: 1. Kenny C. Beauty Bound

Joseph Barbagallo is what one might call an architect of beauty. The owner of Joseph John Salon in Delray Beach has the heart and soul of a designer and the mind and passion for creating beautiful hair for clients.

Some of those clients are local, while others live as far away as New York and beyond. That’s why you might see him boarding a flight to New York once a month to see clients. “I am passionate about making people look their best inside and out. It is so satisfying to make a difference in someone’s life. The only side effect of leaving here is that you look younger and sexier.” That’s why his clients are so smitten with his experience (30 years worth) and his expertise at making them look beautiful. When you talk to them it’s as if Joseph has a hypnotic hold on their inner beauty psyche. “Joseph is AWESOME! He has been my hairstylist for 25 years and I get compliments on a daily basis. I have been to many salons and was disappointed. Now I travel to Florida from New York to have him correct my color and style and to get that “WOW” factor. For an amazing experience have your hair done by Joe. He is truly an artist! He is my Michelangelo!” said Patricia C. As creative as Joseph is (he designed this high brow yet elegant salon himself) he has a collaborative twin in the beauty business, Kevin Bolz. Kevin has 30 years of experience creating beautiful hair (and teaching) and works at Joseph John Salon. Both men have a reputation in the industry for their knowledge and expertise and both have clients that seek them out for what they call the “best hair cut and color on the planet.” Their shared goal is also to make sure clients look sublime. Like great artisans they know how to color, cut, style, tame and add hair extensions. “We promise you will be blowing kisses at yourself by time you leave.”

great minds think alike from start to finish

That’s why Nicole Champagne drives from South Miami to Delray Beach to see them. “I have gone from salon to salon over the years and have always been disappointed. When I found Joseph John in Delray I knew it was the only place to go. Living and working in Pinecrest one would ask, “Delray for a haircut? Yes. And it is worth every minute of the drive. They not only share their expertise and knowledge, but it is an energetic and electric experience. I feel like an entirely new person after they’re done. I have gotten color, highlights, extensions, taming and a haircut by Joseph and Kevin. They work simultaneously to make sure my color, cut and taming is perfect. I always had good hair but now I have really GREAT hair.” Kevin also commutes to Chicago once a month to see clients. Like Joseph, he is a master at understanding the artistic element of hair design and customizes color and dimension for his clients. “There are so many ways to make a woman look beautiful without high maintenance. There are ruching techniques, minking, reflecting color and tone on tone color. Joseph and I collaborate on all things and seek to enhance our client’s beauty, not to compete,” said the Chicago native. Kelly Glivar can attest to that. “Kevin has been my hairdresser for many years and has always given me a great cut and great

color. I know that when I show up to get my hair done I am going to leave looking good and laughing!” One way both men are currently collaborating is by heralding a new movement in the hair industry called co-washing. “We represent a new product called Unwash. It cleanses the hair without sulfates, parabens and detergents. Women are much more active today and wash their hair more. Unwash is a cleanser that locks in natural oil and color without harsh chemicals that strip the hair of its natural integrity.” It’s not just their expertise that charms clients, it’s the designer inspired surroundings. There’s a calming waterfall, asymmetrical shelving, artistic mirrors, a bit of bling and a boatload of restorative invigorating energy. That’s because the salon is spotlessly clean and minimalistic in its approach to design and beauty. “The look now is Bohemian chic with hair that is wavy and soft. Hair that dances with movement is the best,” adds Kevin. From the moment you walk in the synergy between the staff is palpable and you know something great is happening. Rhonda Chiger knew that right away. “I have been going to Joseph to have my hair tamed, cut and colored for over 20 years. A good hairdresser is hard to find so I commute from New York to Florida to see him. I

unwash the new clean!

wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair.” Susan Ross feels the same way. “Joseph gives great attention to detail in both color and cutting and is always current on styles, trends and products. There is a phenomenal synergy between Joseph and Kevin that I have never encountered in a salon. They are both amazing.” Joseph John Salon 900 E Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach 561-274-9400 josephjohnsalon@gmail.com http://www.josephjohnsalon.com

Delray entrepreneurial scene blossoms By Jeff Perlman

{

When you think of entrepreneurial hotbeds names like Silicon Valley, Austin, Boulder and Seattle instantly spring to mind. Could Delray Beach someday be added to that enviable list of cities?

Could Delray Beach someday be added to that enviable list of cities? It’s possible; after all, the city’s vibrant downtown seems to be attracting a range of youngish entrepreneurs drawn by Delray’s restaurants, culture, coffee shops and recreational opportunities. Back in the early 2000s when the city commission and the community was working on the Downtown Master Plan the goal was to attract the so-called “Creative Class,” a hot term of the day coined by Richard Florida, a rock star professor whose best-selling books and speeches electrified mayors all over the world. The creative class was defined as those who made their living using their creative talents and covered everything from artists and architects to computer engineers and advertising professionals. According to Florida’s theory, backed by extensive research, creative were attracted to vibrant places that were tolerant, innovative and had enough density to sustain local businesses and ideas. Fast forward a decade or so later and Delray seems to fit the bill with projects such as Arts Garage, Delray Center for the Arts, Artist’s Alley, the library on West Atlantic, walkability, more than 130 downtown restaurants, a brewpub and live music. Several groups have formed including Startup Delray, NextDelray, Innovate Palm Beach, the Reef (a website devoted to the ecosystem) and Human Powered Delray to promote entrepreneurship, biking, walkability, the arts and food culture.

78 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Atlantic Ave Magazine takes a brief look on a few entrepreneurs to keep your eyes on. This is by no means a definitive list and we will feature more innovators and go in-depth with some featured her in future editions: • C3—led by CEO Rick Mancinelli, this cloud based company, has experienced rapid growth and has been deeply involved in community causes. In fact, C3 is vying to become a “B” Corporation, a special designation reserved for companies that do right by doing good. C3 has supported the Achievement Center, Library, Milagro Center among other local non-profits. Cloud Computing Concepts (C3) is considered a leading provider of cloud-based and on-site technology solutions, services, and management for organizations nationwide – and has been named among the top5 in the 2013 South Florida Business Journal Fastest-growing Tech Firms List. Mancinelli is deeply involved in the South Florida Digital Alliance, local chambers of commerce and non-profits including the YMCA of South Palm Beach County. • Greener Dawn— Courtland Weisleder is a recently transplanted San Diegan who was attracted by Delray’s vibrancy. His company works in the solar energy space connecting homes and businesses to solar providers and showing them how it’s affordable to go solar and save money on monthly bills. Weisleder is involved in Next Delray, a fledg-

ling group that seeks to gather entrepreneurs so they can interact and work through problems and opportunities together. • Edible Palm Beach— Edible Palm Beach is a local publication dedicated to food culture is led by Delray entrepreneur Irene Revelas who came to Delray via Buffalo. Revelas is an attorney/entrepreneur who also works to grow other entrepreneurial companies. She is the founder of StartUp Delray which has hosted several events attracting entrepreneurs and economic developers from as far south as Miami to see what’s happening in Delray. She has also run successful “Maker” camps for kids at Delray Center for the Performing Arts. The events feature robots, 3-D printers and Scripps scientists. • Green Living Technologies—Also in the green category is this company led locally by Glayson Leroy. GLT is working closely with local schools on projects to green their facilities. The company speclalizes in green roofs, walls and urban farms. • Birthday Comp— Led by co-founder Jan van der Baan III and Tom Leeman, this innovative Delray company designs birthday experiences at local businesses that create wins for both the celebrants and their favorite establishments. Passionate and uber cool, Birthday Comp has big ambitions.

• Bidtellect—One of our favorite entrepreneurs is John Ferber, whose energy, humor and passion for business makes you a firm believer in American ingenuity. The co-founder of Advertising.com is working on a second big company, Bidtellect is an online platform through which advertisers bid in real-time for native ad spots. The company was founded in 2010 as a domain name brokerage called Domain Holdings Group . The company recently adopted its new moniker, Bidtellect, to reflect is expanding online advertising niche and is killing it. Stay tuned. • Delray Downtowner—Stephen Murray and his partners have turned the Downtowner into a part of the local fabric with attractive golf carts ferrying visitors and locals all around the downtown. We hear they plan to scale their business to other cool downtown, but they’ll always be a Delray business and success story.

• Wild Angel Films—Tamara Rabil is passionate about films and filmmakers. Her production company Wild Angel Films specializes in stories about the parenting journey. She has recently opened shop in downtown Delray and has big plans for our city relative to film. • Freedom Steel—This fast growing company with international reach is led by Sean Hackner, recently named to the Delray Chamber Board. Freedom Steel Buildings, the industry leader in storage buildings, currently manufactures steel buildings, metal buildings, storage buildings, horse barns, horse riding arenas, steel framing, steel construction, metal storage building, aircraft hangers, farm building and mini-storage buildings. All of this from a Delray location. • Gelato Petrini—Chef Mauro Petrini has quietly built a gelato empire on Southwest 4th Avenue. Gelato Petrini distributes to retailers in Florida, Ohio, Nevada, New York and California. Specialties include sugar free flavors, gluten free gelato and ge-

lato with antioxidants. • Delivery Dudes—Delray is a foodie city and Delivery Dudes came up with an innovative business model to deliver hot food from local restaurants right to your door or business. In 2009, founder, Jayson Koss, was sitting around with some friends wishing he could get some food delivered that wasn’t the usual cheap noodle Chinese or cardboard crust pizza. From this want, Delivery Dudes was born and has been turning mealtime frowns upside down ever since. The service is now available in a slew of Florida cities with more on tap. • Saltwater Brewery—Craft beer is an explosive category. The recent Great American Beer Festival in Denver featured over 3,500 brewers. Delray is in the game with Saltwater Brewery, a rapidly growing brand with a popular headquarters on West Atlantic Avenue. There are more, many more entrepreneurs we will feature in future editions. But this will give you a taste of some of the city’s new innovators and the work they are doing.

There’s no place like 3200 South Ocean

{

It’s an address so quiet, quaint, and exclusive that only 20 people will get the chance to own there.

But those fortunate enough to land a residence in this planned seven-story structure will enjoy distinctive amenities like private boardwalk beach access and a rooftop meditation area with a yoga lawn and heated pool. Both inside and out, this exclusive property promises a one-of-kind experience for a select few. In addition to being a short walk from some of Florida’s best beaches, 3200 South Ocean offers easy access to the upscale shopping and dining of Delray Beach and Boca Raton. In fact, as part of Seagate Development, each residence offers owners the opportunity for membership privileges at The Seagate Beach Club, Country Club, and Yacht Club. Future residents will also enjoy the spa, fitness center, and dining at The Seagate Hotel & Spa on nearby Atlantic Avenue. This new address is the latest in a wellestablished portfolio of iconic residential, lifestyle, and commercial properties courtesy of Seagate Development, which was founded in 2004. Six different floor plans offer interiors designed to feel far more spacious than their actual footage, thanks to 10-foot ceilings and sliding glass doors that open onto expansive balconies. Views from the units vary from the Intracoastal Waterway to glimpses of the Atlantic beyond A1A. Ground-floor units overlook lush tropical landscaping with private pools. Luxurious details include custom lighting, premium wood floors, and master closets large enough to get lost in. Kitchens feature custom European designer cabinets with stone countertops and a Thermador appliance package complete with wine cooler. A Grohe faucet adds an elegant touch to the double-bowl, under-counter-mounted sink. The baths are equally elegant with custom-finish cabinetry, marble floors, and wall

trim, plus his-and-her vanities in the master. Even the secondary baths come appointed with a choice of marble or porcelain floors, a heated air massage tub and a showerhead with separate body sprays. Interior amenities aside, one of the most luxurious benefits of living at 3200 South Ocean will be the opportunity for Seagate membership. These condominium residences will offer privileges at The Seagate Hotel & Spa on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, as well as the private Seagate Beach Club and the Seagate Country Club with a championship 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, fitness center, and 40,000-square-foot clubhouse. JOAN K. GOODRICH The New Economic Development Director of Delray Beach By Diane Feen

{

Joan Goodrich likes to makes things happen. She has helped cities, charities and organizations thrive in difficult economic times and is tenacious when it comes to seeing (and bring to light) the bright side of any situation.

That is why The City of Delray Beach chose her to lead their Economic Development. And they couldn’t have chosen a better candidate. Goodrich’s resume reads like a business book on how to maximize your revenue, create fruitful relationships and jobs. But economic development is just an umbrella for this woman who has expertise in so many different areas on dry land. Though her experience is as varied as the runways at JFK, her excellence at rising to every occasion is unrivaled. Goodrich has experience in Fundraising, Getting Grants, Business Management, Strategic Planning, Marketing and Branding, Policy Development and Advocacy, Business Development, Public and Private Partnerships and Organizational Development and Governance. If it sounds like a lot, it is. And so are her credentials, which read like a Fulbright Scholar’s resume. Goodrich conducted market analysis for a Washington Economic Group; she was the Executive Director of the March of Dimes in Broward and the President and CEO of GSD Southeast Consulting. Goodrich also held the title of Executive Vice President of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Economic Development Alliance (and acting CEO twice) and Executive Director of Coral Springs Economic Development Foundation. Add that to her job as Marketing Manager of the City of Coral Springs and Executive Director for the Tamarac Chamber of Commerce and you have what might be called a wiz in the area of economic development and beyond. “Economic development is about cultivating an environment for business to create quality jobs.

November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Quality jobs are what everyone in the world wants, and what is at the heart and soul of families, communities, states and countries. When someone has a good-paying job - they live their life more fully and believe anything is possible,” said Goodrich. Good point and one that Goodrich has adhered to in her illustrious career. She led a recruiting team in expansion and retention of 52 companies to Coral Springs resulting in over $150 million in economic impact on the economy and $215 million in non-residential taxable value to the city. At the Greater Fort Lauderdale Economic Development Alliance she helped attract and expand businesses to create (and or retain) 21,000 jobs, 4-millionsquare-feet of office-industrial space and invest over $750 million in Broward. One can easily see why The City of Delray Beach hired Goodrich to lead the delicate balance of keeping life in Delray Beach at its residential and cultural zenith while bringing aboard a sound economic structure. “At the end of the day it’s about creating and retaining good jobs for Delray Beach and having good relationships with the businesses that are here. Ultimately it’s about aggressively telling our Delray Beach story so other companies want to come here too,” said the Chicago native who moved to Plantation, Florida when she was 12-years-old. Goodrich isn’t worried about attracting new businesses to Delray Beach for the reason that we all know – Delray is a great place to be. She cites the cultural activities, great neighborhoods and active downtown as a few reasons for Delray’s potential to gain new business suitors. “Small business is big business in Delray Beach. Ninety three percent of

the businesses here have 10 workers. But in the end success breeds success.” And success is one way to define Goodrich and her economic development history. Just ask those who know her. “Joan is very passionate about making a difference on a large scale. She is very driven and committed to business attraction, expansion and retention. Joan’s economic development intelligence skills and passion will definitely take the dynamic city of Delray to another level of success,” said Liz Taschereau. One thing that Goodrich loves to do is to bring people together for the greater good of business and the community. Her organizational skills are superb and her ability to bring both the public and the private sector together could quality her for a job in politics. But her passion lies within the economic underpinnings of making things happen. “Bring people together is such a wonderful high. It’s great to know you were a part of someone’s success. I love coaching people and being a part of their growth to see them do great things for the world.” If you ask Robert Sims, Chief Marketing Officer at Hearts and Flowers Florist, he will tell you Goodrich practices what she preaches. “Joan has a grasp of every function of the positions she has attained and left each organization better for being there. She has succeeded in highly political situations where her ability to mediate, mentor and negotiate have served her and her organizations well. Her personality, persistence, determination has worked for the betterment of everyone around her.” Those around her include her husband of 27 years, Michael (he is the women’s soccer coach at Nova Southeastern University) daughter Regina who works fulltime and is a student, and Patrick a freshman at University of Florida. When not working to pump up economies and non-profit organizations Goodrich can be found playing golf, reading business (and romance) novels or visiting her parents in Port St. Lucie. But rest assured that Goodrich always has her eye on the ball whether on the golf course or in her new position as Economic Development Director of Delray Beach. “While I am extremely proud of the accomplishments and impact I have had over the years, I firmly believe my best work is yet to come in Delray Beach.”

HOUSE OF SIAM Food To Savor And Devour

Pickaboo Tuna - Spicy Tuna & Crispy Seaweed 98

November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Want to feel like you have a professional chef at your fingertips? Not to worry, House of Siam figured out years ago that most people want their food prepared fresh with a little TLC and a lot of expertise.

That’s how House of Siam has managed to be a staple in Pineapple Grove for the past 15 years. Their loyal following (and newcomers) continue to dine on homemade Thai food and Sushi that is prepared just how you like it. If you want your dishes prepared with the spices and herbs of Thai tradition, you will swoon over their savory flavor and distinctly divine dishes. But if you have food allergies – or like your food on the milder side – all you have to do is ask. And, the answer will always be yes. That is the very reason that local Delray

artist Sharon Kurlychek and her husband Alex come to House of Siam quite often. “I love it here, the food is delicious, it’s friendly and I trust that everything I order will be great,” said Sharon. Alex also finds that House of Siam is the perfect place to sit outside in the courtyard and dine like a king. They couldn’t wait to share this culinary pleasure with their friend Robert Cooke from Ohio. “House of Siam is a wonderful place – we’ve tried other Thai restaurants but this food is the best. We not only come back often but we like to bring friends here because we know they will enjoy their meal,” said Alex.

While Cooke is positively charmed by the authentic Tom Kha chicken, shrimp and seafood soup, he was devouring a plate of crispy duck that was cooked just to his liking. That is what makes House of Siam such an anomaly – all the food is prepared fresh everyday with herbs and spices right from their garden. There’s also a certain amount of intrinsic joy that the chef gets from preparing food from their homeland in Thailand. “When we left Thailand we searched for an authentic Thai restaurant that would capture the flavors and tastes of the rich culture we left behind. We couldn’t find such a place, so we created one,” said coowner Pian, who is always dressed in the authentic splendor of Thailand. Her husband Patrick, who is rarely seen outside the kitchen, is the chef par excellence. It is his precision and dedication to excellence that makes the food at House of Siam like a buried treasure unearthed. Some of the most popular dishes in the Thai tradition are Young Coconut Curry, House sizzler or Volcano Sizzler, Pad Thai, Green Curry, Shrimp and Chicken Dumplings and Spring Rolls. If you were to ask Valquiria Pidgeon, who was at House of Siam for the first time, she would tell you that her Coconut Curry dish was splendid. “This is wonderful; they gave me a lot of large shrimp, the presentation is amazing and everything is so delicious. I can’t believe the prices are so reasonable for this excellent quality of food.” It’s the consistency of terrific homemade food that draws people to this low keyed off the Avenue hot spot. Where else can you get a dish brought to your table sizzling hot (with chicken, beef, pork or tofu) with stir fried cucumbers, onion, bell pepper, cashew nuts and fresh spinach topped in a delicious peanut sauce? The answer is nowhere. The Coconut Curry, served in a fresh coconut, comes with your choice of meat or seafood, and is cooked with mixed vegetables, Thai curry paste and fresh basil. We also love their stir fried Scallops in a light brown sauce with carrots, zucchini and snow peas. Although the food at House of Siam is world class, you can’t beat their divinely decadent sauces prepared fresh every day. Each dish brings with it the wow factor that will have you saying “yum” as if it were a mantra. We also love the Siam Sizzler with both tofu and jumbo shrimp. This combination enhances the exotic sauce with vegetables and cashew nuts in a fresh peanut sauce. House of Siam has a bit of a split person-

ality when it comes to cuisine. After years of success in their quiet courtyard location they decided to add sushi and extra space to their location. And we’re glad they did. Their fresh sushi is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and their menu. We recently tried the One Ocean Roll, which is tuna, salmon, yellow tail, kani, asparagus, scallions, masago and sesame seeds wrapped in cucumber – and it was wonderful. For a spicier kick try the Peek-a-Boo chopped Tuna Sushi Tower with spicy mayo and crispy seaweed crackers (it’s addicting). House of Siam’s selections of sushi rolls (cooked and raw) are endless. There’s a Boston Roll (with cooked shrimp, avocado, cucumber, lettuce and tomato) and Dancing Eel Roll with Eel on top of a California Roll. There are many other sushi appetizers, sashimi and rolls of all variation. If you

like to make sure your fish has seen higher temperatures try their cooked entrees like crispy fried chicken Katsu, Teriyaki dishes, Fresh Grilled Fish and Tempuras. The owners of House of Siam also take pride in serving a large selection of vegetarian dishes. Their Thai desserts are a treat as well - Honeyed Banana (served hot and crispy) with whipped cream and Thai Doughnuts. A meal at House of Siam is worth celebrating. The food is fresh and tasty and they have a myriad of mystical flavors to uplift your mood or your palate. We guarantee it. TENDER JUICY TURKEY

By Yvette Roulette

A Simple Traditional Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. It encompasses for most, three All American “Fs”: Food, Football, and Family. Some Thanksgiving dinners are fancy and elaborate, with recipes straight out of Bon Appétit, while others are more simple and basic with family recipes that have been passed down through generations. This Thanksgiving I will share some of my favorite, crowd pleasing, fool proof, traditional recipes. 100 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Tender Juicy Turkey

1 15 lb turkey - giblets and neck removed 2 Tbsp each of dried parsley, ground dried rosemary, rubbed dried sage, dried thyme leaves 1 Tbsp lemon pepper 1 Tbsp salt 2 Stalks of celery, chopped 1 Orange cut in wedges 1 Onion chopped 1 Carrot chopped 1 14.5 oz Can of chicken broth 1 Bottle of champagne (or ginger ale, or coke) *If prepared ahead, marinate the turkey in the fridge the day before for even more tender juiciness! 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a turkey roster with long sheets of foil that will be long enough to wrap the turkey loosely.

2. Stir together the parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, lemon pepper and salt in a small bowl. Rub the mixture in the cavity of the turkey and over and under the skin of the turkey. Stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, orange, and carrot. Truss, if desired and place the turkey in the roasting pan. Pour the broth and champagne over the turkey and make sure to get some champagne in the cavity. Bring the foil over the top of the turkey and seal. Keep the foil from touching the skin of the breast or legs. 3. Bake the turkey for 2 1/2 - 3 hours until juices run clear. Uncover and continue to bake until skin turns golden brown (about 30 minutes to 1 hour more). When done, remove turkey from oven and cover with aluminum foil - let the turkey rest at least 15 minutes before carving.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Serves 12 7 Cups of chicken broth ( I use Swanson) 10 Large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces 1 Cup of sour cream 1 Stick of butter softened Salt and Pepper to taste Heat broth and potatoes over high heat to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Cover and cook until potatoes are tender. Drain, reserving broth. *Mash potatoes with 1/4 cup of broth, butter, sour cream, salt and pepper. Add additional broth slowly until desired consistency. *I whip my potatoes with a mixer. It makes for fluffier potatoes and no lumps!

Combine cheese and macaroni until well blended. Spoon mac & cheese into lightly greased cupcake pan. Melt 2 tbsp of butter over medium heat, add breadcrumbs and brown. Sprinkle over each cup. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Do Seasonal Changes Affect Our Pets?

T

he seasonal change has arrived again as it does every year. The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler. While it’s still summer-like here in South Florida, our northern neighbors are already experiencing some cool and cold weather. Our pets instinctively begin changes to adapt to these conditions. We must be aware that these changes are not only about getting out the pet sweaters and coats from last season for warmth on their morning and evening walks, but also about physiological changes in our pets’ metabolism. For those in areas where freezing weather occurs, a sigh of relief is coming in that fight against fleas and ticks. It is important to stop using those flea, tick and heartworm products in this season, they pose no threat. This gives your pet’s body a chance rest from the toxic challenge we have presented to them. Along with this, a detoxification program should also be done in order to provide for cleansing of these specific toxins. Botanical and herbals as well as homeopathic remedies are abound and are safe and effective. As natural creatures, most animals

instinctively increase their appetite to prepare for the season and will promote extra stored fat in order to protect themselves from the cold. Their metabolism will increase as well as they produce more body heat to fend off the cooler temperatures. The diet should reflect this specific need by increasing higher metabolic energy foods such as real muscle meat and using less of the debilitating, fat producing carbohydrate based foods. Foods and supplements rich in Omega 3 and 9 fatty acids as well as foods rich in minerals such as kelp assist the body in building a thicker protective dermal layer. This is doubly important as our heated homes have a drying, dehydrating effect on our pets’ skin. Similar to humans, the fatty acids will also help our pet’s joints that tend to ache when they are cold. The weather will also impact your pet’s’ activity and exercise levels. Many dogs will suffer from a lack of exercise as the owners don’t want to spend time out in the cold. This may be just the opposite in the south where the cooler temperatures are a welcomed change from the heat of summer. Cats on the hand may be more

active because of their nocturnal nature and the longer periods of darkness. It is important for us, as their caregivers to monitor and provide the stimulation and enrichment that will keep them healthy. As is always the case, keeping our animals healthy is about their physiology and the importance of a species appropriate diet and an ongoing, targeted detoxification program. Some of our common approaches are actually counterparts to what we really need to provide. Cutting back on food because of their lack of activity can cause the body into a starvation strategy that will cause excessive weight gain whereas higher metabolic energy foods will keep them fit. By keeping natural functions in mind, our pets will stay healthy and balanced through all the seasons. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... The 3 S’s: Stuffing, Sweet Potatoes and SINGLE! Like a tornado, Halloween passed through. Now the real holiday season makes its so called “delicate” grand entrance and all hell usually breaks loose. If you have recently looked at a calendar, you know that Thanksgiving is a mere 26 days away, Hanukkah on deck at 46, Christmas hitting clean-up with New Year’s closing out the batting order. It’s no mystery that the holidays can be challenging for just about anyone. It’s the one time of year that no matter how hard you try to be festive and jolly, the stress can overcome you like a turkey induced food coma. There are so many decisions to be made, plans to be coordinated and significant money to be spent. And then you add the extra layer of stress- you are SINGLE! The holidays are the time of year when coupled people everywhere. It’s the time when you find yourself at the kid’s table at your family Turkey Day gathering or wearing the scarlet letter “S” (for single), doing the customary “drive-by” at your company holiday party. It always seems much easier to focus on all the negatives about being alone at the holidays, but truthfully, when you really weigh in, it’s honestly not so tragic and any many ways, it’s something to be thankful for. Here are five pretty cool reasons that it’s ok to be single during the holiday season: 1. No In-laws or someone else’s dysfunctional family to deal with. There really isn’t enough alcohol or carbohydrates to get thru these types of events. A menagerie of personalities who are constantly at each other’s throats. Sound familiar? Now you don’t have to stress over which household to celebrate with. 2. Holiday cards not required. There is something a little creepy (ok, maybe a bit funny) about sending a photo card of you and your pet goldfish climbing Machu Picchu or writing that boastful yearly recap letter folded tenderly inside the card. Save the

112 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

tree and the postage. Go buy something fun instead, you deserve it! 3. To decorate or not to decorate? That is the question! For anyone who has had a Christmas tree, you can attest that it’s a ton of work, especially a live one. The act of carrying it from the lot to your home and back to the sidewalk for the trash collectors is pretty much a cardio vascular activity in itself. So, get out of the house and go check out the Mizner Park or Atlantic Avenue trees. No fuss, no muss and you never know who you may find admiring the lights. Get in the spirit and love finds its way to you! Keyword- “Mistletoe” (wink, wink). 4. Be a little selfish! Stop trying to please everyone around you and do what makes you happy. This is the one time of year where you can get away with it. Take the cash you would have used on your partner and spend it on the most deserving recipient-YOU! Upgrade your life by joining a new gym, getting a makeover, splurging on that expensive Calloway Big Bertha club or booking that adventure or golf trip. I can speak from personal experience. Nothing delights me more than spoiling myself. If I wait around for someone else to do it, well you get the picture. 5. No “Adventures In Babysitting” here! When your dance card is full of parties, being single allows you to be fancy free. There is nothing worse than having to babysit someone at a party. You don’t get trapped talking to one person all night. Being single allows you to make your grand entrance and float around meeting

loads of new people, maybe someone who really sparks your interest. And if you are enjoying the celebration, you never have to worry about leaving the party too soon. Your exit is always on your own terms. I can’t remember the last time I was an “US” for the holiday season. I have spent the last three Xmas/NYE conveniently on a white, sandy beach with my best friend and group of single friends who always travel together. Maybe it’s my way of checking out for those two weeks of holiday mayhem, but I always start the year off recharged, happy and truly ready to meet Mr. Right. Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice to be someone’s plus one for some pumpkin pie this November or December’s yuletide cheer. But loving my extra fabulous single life, having my personal sanity and buying an extra pair of fabulous shoes at 60% off with my extra cash, isn’t such a bad thing either. “If you are grateful for everything, then whatever you have is enough.” Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus

Photo by Norman Karl Garrett Photography

The Must-have Merchants Are you looking for a mermaid sign? Maybe a custom crafted chandelier with pickle jar light bulbs? Could you use your favorite hat monogramed? Well if these are all purchases you may be looking to make, you are in luck. Located within blocks of each other in Pineapple Grove are a number of unique stores to whet your shopping appetite. Make your way over to Michelle LaGreca and Ray Greaves’ Chappy’s Attic for a funky find, or head down the street to Michelle and Rey Mendez’s Rustic Rooster for oneof-a-kind furniture. Find something really special and get it personalized at Sabrina Amelung’s Monogram Closet. These proprietors keep the town stocked with must-haves, and all agree the Grove is one of their favorite treasures.

Michelle LaGreca

I love and enjoy working here in Pineapple Grove for the obvious reasons. This area draws the most artistic, fun, loving people. I look for treasures to sell in my shop that are unique, artistic and funky! I am excited about the future and to be right here in Pineapple Grove for years to come!

Rey Mendez

I really love the vibe that all the stores and restaurants bring. I have lived in this area for years and have known some of the other business owners since I was a kid.

Sabrina Amelung

I love the diversity of the Grove. It’s unique and ever-changing with great artistic influence.

Charlie Munger may be the coolest 90-year-old on the planet

{

He’s certainly among the savviest investors of his or possibly any other age.

His partner is a gentleman named Warren Buffett and together Warren and Charlie have built Berkshire Hathaway into a colossus. Last I checked, a single share of Berkshire was trading at nearly $210,000—that is not a typo. Next year, Warren and Charlie will be celebrating their 50th anniversary together at Berkshire. To honor their golden anniversary, Warren asked Charlie to ponder two questions: “Why did it work? And will it continue?” Simple questions – on the surface at least – until you start to think about them and realize how deeply you have to delve to figure out why something was successful. Since this magazine is about Delray, I thought about Warren’s questions and how we might answer them. So why did Delray work? I think we can agree that Delray is a pretty cool place. We are known for our rocking downtown and our beautiful beach. We also have some interesting cultural assets and a great vibe. But those are symptoms, indicators, outcomes that don’t really answer why this city has worked. They also aren’t guaranteed to continue, which is interesting to think about because it points out the fact that nothing is permanent. Success is not permanent, and happily neither is failure. Downtowns can dry up. Big employers can move in and move out. Natural disasters can do damage and great cultural assets can suffer if you take your eye off the

118 November 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

ball. So again, why did it work? I think Delray worked because the city was entrepreneurial when it needed to be. I recently had lunch with a former veteran department head, one in a series of thought provoking lunches that I have come to look forward too. We spoke about how Delray was focused on outcomes more so than process. The leadership tasked city staff with getting things done (legally and morally of course) which allowed for some creativity and innovation on the staff level. The results were dramatic: the city came a long way and went from Dull Ray to Delray over a two decade period of time. Problems were solved, solutions were shared and the city earned a reputation for innovation and a style that some called the “Delray way.” There’s a lot of upside to focusing on outcomes. But there are some downsides as well. When process is sacrificed, it can sometimes stray a little too far (for instance, you need to bid contracts, you should always engage the public and even flexible zoning should have limits). So yes, cities and businesses need process, but not at the expense of creativity, fairness and predictability. City planning is more art than science; which is why it was genius in Delray to have something called “conditional use.” Conditional use has been demonized and misunderstood over the years. It’s been lumped in with waivers and variances and all those other loaded terms, but in reality conditional use is a tool that al-

charlie munger

lows developers (another loaded term) to get something if they give something. As a policymaker, I loved it. Why? Because it allowed us to make good projects happen and it allowed us to kill bad projects. I liked having that flexibility. Conditional use was one of the reasons why it happened, Mr. Munger. As for whether it will continue, that’s up to us and who we elect to lead us. Stray too far from the winning formula and it probably won’t continue. There are all sorts of examples of places that boomed and then went bust. But if you refuse to innovate and acknowledge change, you’re also dooming yourself. Regardless, Warren’s questions of his partner Charlie are queries we all should ponder.
