ice weather, Thanksgiving in paradise, and football. Is there a better time of year?
We are so fortunate to live in a community that I
truly believe is the finest small city in America.
And I’m thankful for what we have.
But most of all, I’m thankful for the very term community.
What we have in Delray is very special; a sense of place, a sense
of community and a spirit that has enabled us to come together to create something very unique.
In this issue of Atlantic Ave Magazine we continue to celebrate
the wonder that is Delray Beach.
Thanks to David and Lisa Mizen and Associate Publisher Yvette
Roulette (she is as cool as the name) who continue to make this
magazine possible along with our great sales staff, writers, designers and photographers.
Everywhere I go—and as The Beach Boys say “I Get Around”—
people ask me about Atlantic Ave Magazine. They look forward
to every issue, debate our covers, argue about What R U Wearing, read about our businesses and personalities and get life advice from our columnists.
It is a true pleasure to present that information each and every
month. So yes I am thankful.
In this issue, you will read just 10 of thousands of things we are
grateful for, our own Thanksgiving tradition.
You will also read about what’s happening around town and get
a sneak look at Delray’s next great street. Who knows maybe soon we will start a “Congress Ave” magazine.
Enjoy, happy Thanksgiving and have a safe, fun and happy
month.
We are so grateful for your continued support.

Jessica Rosato, Luxury Residential Specialist with Nestler Poletto Sotheby’s International Realty and member of the Indulgence Committee stated, “This is my fourth year participating in this amazing event that featured an evening of glamour and giving. $268,000.00 with 3,000 attendees. This was the FIRST time Mizner Park Amphitheater held a charity event of this kind on a Sunday AND the FIRST time that the SE Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association held a Walk on a Sunday. The Lt. Governor, Carlos Lopez-Cantera, of our state attended the Walk with his family, along with Senator Maria Sachs, Mayor Susan Haynie, Deputy Mayor Bob Weinroth, and the entire Boca Council, as well as State Reps, Bill Hager and Lori Berman, and Congressman Ted Deutsch’s office. The Walk, which does not have any registration charge, provided a complimentary breakfast to each participant of Krispy Kreme donuts,
Starbucks coffee, bagels from NY Water Bagels and Palm Beach bagels, and KIND bars, along with fresh fruit and water, all donated from local vendors. The Boca Walk, which local attorney, Pamela Polani, founded and has chaired since its creation, represents residents living in the Boca/Delray/Parkland/ Deerfield Beach area. However, since it was on a Sunday morning, the event attracted walkers from Miami to West Palm, due to the Walks in their area being held on a Saturday, which was a religious conflict for many. The committee is still fundraising until December 1st. If you wish to make a contribution, please go to http://act.alz.org/BocaWalk

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in November for $50 or less.
’m sure most family stories involve someone naked as a toddler, an embarrassing homecoming photo or Aunt Ethel’s scorched Thanksgiving turkey. If you’re in the market for some fresh stories, you’re in luck. November is Family Stories Month and I’ve got your perfect avenue for some family story action: pickleball. Pickleball is a paddle sport played with a whiffle ball on a badminton-sized court and a tennis-style net. A non-volley zone (or kitchen) prevents volleys close to the net, and the serving team cannot volley the return of a serve. These unique rules favor players with less mobility and allow senior players to compete successfully with younger competitors, making it a perfect activity for all family members. Pickleball is played daily at either Pompey Park or the Community Center and the daily rate is only $2. Maybe you and the fam could even put together some swanky matching outfits and think of a cool team name and a theme song, to boot. The possibilities are endless for some family fun and family stories, so go and get your pickle on. Pompey Park is located at 1101 N.W. Second St. and the Community Center is located at 50 N.W. First Ave. and games start as early as 9 a.m. Visit www.dbpickle.com or call (561) 2437356 or (561) 243-7250 for more information and to verify play.

xcept for the grunting part, tennis is probably one of my favorite sports to watch, and it’s so great that we have a tennis center right down the street.
November 22 through 28 is National Game and Puzzle Week and I’d bet there’s going to be a lot more than grunting going on at the Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic. Held November 21 and 22 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, the event features professional and celebrity pairs that include Chelsea Handler, Dennis Miller, Gavin Rossdale, Jason Biggs, Jon Lovitz, Lisa Raymond, Martina Navratilova, and more. I will tell you for a fact that it’s super fun watching famous people play tennis as they try to beat people who play the game for a living, all while wearing a mic. Tickets start at $20 per day for general admission, or you can up your serve and go for a premium club seat for $40 per day. Either way, these competitive matches raise money to help at-risk families throughout Florida, and there’s nothing but love, love for that. The Delray Beach Tennis Center is located at 201 W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.chrisevert.org or call (561) 394-2400 for more information and to purchase tickets.
I
f there’s one place I avoid at all costs, it’s the mall. So imagine my horror if I have to go there on Black Friday when it’s a crowded mall. Thankfully, I don’t have to because there is a better shopping haven in town and it’s calling my name. November 28 is Small Business Saturday so grab your sunhat because you’re going downtown for the 16th Annual Downtown Delray Beach Thanksgiving Weekend Art Festival. This annual juried art festival features more than 100 exhibitors and their hand-crafted artwork including glass, photography, painting, mixed media, fiber, jewelry and more. It would be almost impossible to not find all of your holiday gifts, so you’re welcome, in advance. The best part is that you can shop while you drop some of that turkey, gravy and pie weight that you’ve deliciously acquired over the past couple of days. The festival is held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days and admission is free so you have plenty of holiday bucks to get your holiday shopping bang. The festival is held along N.E. Fourth Avenue and Atlantic Avenue so grab a fall-themed cocktail at one of the restaurants around the corner. It’s the holiday season, treat yourself. Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561) 746-6615 for more information.

t’s time to lace up the sneakers for a good cause… anddd maybe to make room for turkey. Family Volunteer Day is November 21 so this is the best time to gather the family and partake in the Delray Beach Turkey Trot 5K Run and Walk. Held November 21 along A1A, this is one of the prettiest routes for a 5K because you get to see the sun rise over the beach and enjoy a beautiful start to a day. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the race begins at 7:30 a.m. so you’ll be done with enough time to grab a mimosa at Caffe Luna Rosa afterward. Entry fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children if you pre-register, and the best part is that all proceeds from the race benefit the Keith Straghn Feed the Hungry Thanksgiving Drive. So you get to feel good knowing you helped to give someone a Thanksgiving dinner, all while spending time volunteering with your family as you get in shape for your own Thanksgiving. The race begins at Anchor Park, 340 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.mydelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-7277 for more information.

our years ago I left the snow of Munroe Falls, Ohio and headed to Delray Beach chasing a dream creating my own brand of fitness. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in exercise physiology, from the University of Akron, and experience and knowledge from coaching and competing in sports. I have worked in both medically based and sports performance fitness facilities. As an American college of sports medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist I began my personal training career 6 years ago. Group exercise has become another one of my passions giving me the opportunity to reach out to more people at one time. I am a strong leader, full of positive energy and treat my clients like family. I go the extra mile to push and educate them along the journey of reaching, surpassing, and maintaining their goals, while transforming them into living the healthy lifestyle or reaching a level of performance they have only dreamed of. I’m honored to be a part of the Pūrlife family. They have allowed me to help develop a group exercise program that is science based, full of energy, and results driven for clients of all ages and abilities. Contact me for any of your fitness and performance questions I’m always willing to help.
y name is Renee and I moved to Delray Beach from Houston, Texas because I love the beach and let’s face it, Delray’s beach is one of the best ever! I have been in the ‘hair’ industry for 20 years. I have traveled all over the US as a National Educator for several different companies. I was written about in Allure Magazine as one of the top 10 Colorists in the United States and that same month in Self Magazine as the number one Colorist in Texas. I then opened my first salon in Houston called Aqua Salon and Spa, which is very successful and still open today. I travel back to Houston every 5 weeks to take care of my loyal clients there. As a color specialist I cover all shades and tones but I specialize in blondes which is why my new business here in Delray Beach is called Blondie’s Hair Studio. I also do hair extensions and Keratin treatments. I still travel to learn different techniques about my profession because staying on top of the trends and styles keeps my job fun and exciting. If you want to know more come in for a free consultation, I’m always up for a challenge.

y name is Gerri Dalzell and I’m the owner of Pilateda a new anti-aging approach to fitness in Delray. I recently moved here from Studio City, L.A., where I owned and operated my own successful studio for over ten years. While studying at Balance Body University and building my business, I was training Circus Soleil Acrobats, Victoria Secret models, as well as injured dancers and 90-year-old cancer survivors, an eclectic mix for sure. I have been interested in fitness my whole life and as an athlete searched for a method that would carry my own body into aging gracefully without stressing my joints, and I came up with a program of low impact workouts designed to help people continue full mobility while gaining bone density and increased flexibility. I thrive at using everything in my arsenal. Pilates, breath, pace, intervals, GYROTONIC®, Power Plate, etc., Form is also important to me and I have a very developed eye to keep people progressing and safe. Compassion and humor are my trademarks and caring for whoever walks through my door. I think that is what keeps me wanting to grow and continue working in this field. Pilateda is now in the “Delray Center for Healing” and accepting new clients for privates. Hope to meet you soon, EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE!

am Jacie Paulson, originally from Livonia, Michigan. I have called Delray Beach my home for nearly 10 years now. In this time, I have watched this seaside town grow and develop into what is it today, and I have enjoyed being a part of it. I have a Master’s Degree in Mental Health & Counseling. My career began in Condo Management which lead me to Real Estate. I first started working in Real Estate as an Administrative Assistant taking my time to learn the ins and outs of the industry, and then transitioning into a full time Real Estate Agent. For me, it is not about selling a property, it is about getting to know my customer and developing a relationship that will last beyond the sale of their home. I consider my job an honor, when my customers dream becomes a reality when purchasing a property, I get to be apart of that process. Whether I am working with a first time home-buyer, or someone who is purchasing a second home, I will be there every step of the process with the highest level of professionalism and reliability. I am committed to exceeding my clients’ expectations. Call me today to set up an appointment!

pictures ║THE DELRAY BEACH ACADEMY AWARDS 1
By diane feen
T
here were dazzling gowns, radiant smiles and a Birthday cake in the center of every table. It was the 90th Birthday party for an organization that seems to get younger every year – The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. The 2015 Luminary Gala, held at the Delray Marriott, was filled with sparkling gestures of good will and camaraderie. The cocktail party was punctuated by rooms filled with silent auction gifts (a Delray Yacht Cruise, candlelight dinners, a ghost tour, pop art retro-bicycle, jewelry and more), the allure of Hollywood attire, hors de oeuvres and cocktail party cheer. If you’ve been a part of the Delray Beach social infrastructure (or business community) then everyone in the room might have looked familiar. But you might not have recognized them. There were sexy Hollywood gowns and dashing tuxedos that made everyone seem like they had just flown in from St. Tropez’s casino night. The essence of the Gala is to shine a spotlight on those who contribute to the success (and essence) of what makes Delray Beach the hippest small town in America. There are eight awards given to businesses, business leaders, non-profit organizations, leaders of distinction and a restaurant. The winners were: Terra Spero, Delray Motors, Saltwater Brewery, Milagro Center, Two Fat Cookies and Scott Porten received the Ken Ellingsworth Community Service Award. When Caffe Luna Rosa won an Award Fran Marincola jumped up on his chair and shouted “Yes…Yes…Yes” with gusto. To those of us who witnessed Roberto Benigni jumping up on his seat after winning an Academy Award in 1999, it was a delightful déjà vu. The event, that was also a fundraiser for the chamber, honored Virginia Snyder with the 2015 lifetime Achievement Award. Snyder graduated in the first class at FAU (in 1965) and was an award winning investigative journalist
at the Boca News and Ft. Lauderdale News. In 1975 she opened a private detective agency and was the inspiration for the TV series, “Murder She Wrote.” Snyder founded The South County Neighborhood Center in Boca (now the Mae Volen Senior Center) and the Florence Fuller Day Care Center. Another woman of distinction, who has a place in everyone’s heart for being a visionary and leader of the cultural arts, is Frances Bourque. Bourque, who has the charm of a Southern Belle and the steely determination of a union organizer, saw this years’ event as a turning of the tide. “The Chamber Gala has grown over the years showcasing the energy and entrepreneurship of our business community and non-profit programs. Most important is the volunteerism recognized at this annual celebration. Volunteerism is the backbone of the spirit and success of Delray, and so is recognizing successful businesses. Bravo to the members of our brightest Star, the Chamber, a successful organization serving our community, never standing still, always reaching for our future.” The incoming CEO of the DBCFA, Rob Steele, was wowed as well. “The 90th anniversary DBCC Gala afforded me the opportunity to see good folks of Delray in silk and starch instead of the traditional seersucker and sandals…wow!” CEO of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, Karen Granger also rose to the challenge of being a wonderful (and fearless) leader of the evening (and the chamber). Her Marilyn Monroe attire and bouffant hairdo stretched us all a little closer to Hollywood. During the dinner a lively auction took place that added a bit of excitement (and philanthropy) to the night. A day with the Police Chief was auctioned, a weekend at Crane’s Beachhouse, a Salvatore Principe painting, passes to NASCAR and more. It was a night of glamour, sumptuous cuisine, leadership and inspiration for all. See you next year!

f you hunger for more “Hunger Games,” November is your lucky month. However, there are quite a few other worthy new releases from Hollywood, as the Oscar race heats up. November 6 “The Peanuts Movie” should be selfexplanatory. The beloved Charles Schulz characters are recreated in a 3-D CGI format for a new generation. Taking the center stage is the world’s most lovable beagle and flying ace, Snoopy, embarking on his greatest adventure ever. “Spectre,” aka Bond 24, brings back Daniel Craig as British super agent James Bond. This time he is on a mission to Mexico and Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Belucci), the beautiful widow of a notorious criminal. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), new head of the Center for National Security, questions Bond and the entire M16 organization, led by M (Ralph Fiennes).
jennifer lawrence “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2”
What’s in a “Room?” Well, you have Ma (Brie Larson) and her 5-year-old son Jack (Jacob Tremblay) living in a ten by ten-foot space and facing huge challenges. The cast includes Joan Allen, William H. Macy and Megan Park, directed by Lenny Abrahamson (“Frank”). “The 33” refers to the number of miners buried alive in the 2010 collapse of a Chile gold mine 200 stories beneath the surface of the Earth. Antonio Banderas plays Mario Sepulveda, known as “Super Mario,” who keeps the men’s hopes alive during the 69 days of their ordeal. Martin Sheen plays the father of a trapped miner in a screen story by Jose Rivera from a book by Hector Tobar. Patricia Riggin (“Girl in Progress”) directs. “My All American” is a sports film about Freddie Steinmark (Finn Wittick), who was deemed too small to play college football. He tried out anyway for legendary University of Texas coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart) and made the team, only to be sidelined by an injury that uncovered a more grievous ill. Sarah Bolger plays his girlfriend Linda, Rett Terrell is his teammate Bobby Mitchell and Justin Street is his new friend, James Street. Angelo Pizzo (“The Game of Their Lives”) wrote and directs. Could this be art imitating life? “By The Sea,” written and directed by Angelina Jolie, is about an American couple in marital crisis in seaside France in the early 1970s. Brad Pitt plays writer Roland and Jolie is his wife Vanessa. Also in the cast are Melanie Laurent and Niels Arestrup. November 20 OK kids, the wait is over for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.” Jennifer Lawrence returns as fearless archer Katniss Everdeen in this second part sequel of the late Jackie Collins’ potboiler “Catching Fire.” Donald Sutherland returns as President Snow, now a target for assassination in District 13. Also returning are Liam Hemsworth as Dale, Sam Clafin as Finnick and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. “The Hunger Games” have
grossed more than $2.2 billion so far, so it is hard to argue with success. What is “The Secret in Their Eyes?” It’s an English remake of “El Secreto De Sus Ojos,” for one thing, written and directed by Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips”). Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor star as FBI investigators of the inexplicable murder of a young girl and Nicole Kidman is their District Attorney boss. The action flashes back and forth over 13 years. Everyone loves a “Spotlight” except when it exposes bad stuff. “Spotlight” is the true story of the 2010 Boston Globe investigative team that uncovered a sex abuse scandal in the Boston Catholic Archdiocese. Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo play reporters. Michael Keaton is their editor Walter “Robby” Robertson. Tom McCarthy (“Win Win”) is the writerdirector. November 25 T’was “The Night Before,” as in Christmas. Three childhood friends: Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) meet in New York City for their tenth annual Christmas Eve get-together. This year could be their last, and they are in search of the legendary Nutcracker Ball. Lizzy Caplan plays Diana and Mindy Kaling and Kanye West are in the cast. Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies”) is the writer-director. If you are going to encounter a dinosaur you should hope it is “The Good Dinosaur.” Pixar animation studios present a premise in which dinosaurs never perished but continued to live amongst us. Voices are by Frances McDormand, Raymond Ochoa, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn and Anna Paquin. James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star as “Victor Frankenstein” and his loyal protégé Igor Strausman in a new take on the Frankenstein legend. Victor goes bonkers, and only resourceful Igor can bring him back to reality. “Creed” was a rock group in Tallahassee, Florida. It also is a new film starring Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, grandfather and mentor to Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), who is the grandson of his former opponent Apollo Creed. Phyllicia Rashad portrays Mary Ann Creed.

Spinal Stenosis
Effective Non-Surgical Treatment Options By Dr. John Conde
{
Spinal Stenosis is a debilitating orthopedic and neurological disorder which affects primarily the geriatric population. It is characterized by lower back pain that can radiate into the legs and produce subsequent weakness.
Often times the weakness is associated with painful numbness and tingling. A common presentation is a drastic increase in pain when the individual is standing idle, as occurs when cooking or doing the dishes, or with prolonged walking and almost immediate relief when progressing to a sitting position. Spinal stenosis seems to be greatly misunderstood in the general population. It literally means a narrowing of the spinal canal, the bony structure which houses and protects the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. The occlusion of the spinal canal is typically caused by one of four distinct entities; congenitally narrowed canal from birth, tumor, disc herniation, and or arthritis. By far the leading cause is arthritis in which bone spurs and changes in the morphology or shape of the vertebra lead to occlusion. Unfortunately, the primary recommendation for such a presentation as spinal stenosis is surgical intervention. However, non-surgical conservative treatment options have vastly improved over the years and should be a serious initial consideration before any invasive procedures. In-fact some of the most decorated orthopedic and neurosurgeons in the world are now having their patients attempt conservative therapies prior to surgery. Revolutionary new treatment options are centered on decompressing the spine utilizing advanced stretching mechanisms, applying flexion based trunk exercises, manipulating the lumbar spine, and applying class IV cold laser therapy. Due to the fact that arthritis cannot be removed by any means, the main objectives of these thera-
52 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
pies are to reposition the spinal joints and stretch the lumbar ligaments and tendons so that the canal is physically widened. The amount of widening necessary to produce positive long-lasting change is very minimal and quite attainable. In conjunction with this, cold laser therapy decreases the healing time by increasing the metabolism of the injured cells and by reducing inflammation and spasm. Therapeutic exercises are
applied to increase strength in the correct muscle groups so as to reinforce the widening of the canal. Give non-traditional yet effective treatment options a chance prior to any surgical intervention. O-PLACENTA™ Stem Cell Facial
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
Stem Cells have been a buzz word in cosmetic medicine for several years and now appear to be part of the hottest facial treatments for Hollywood superstars.
What do Kim Kardashian, Harry Styles and Victoria Beckham have in common? They have all enjoyed the O-PLACENTA™ facial, a rejuvenating skin treatment containing stem cells from sheep placentas. Simon Cowell calls this fountain of youth “better than Botox”. Super hydrating, nourishing, and revitalizing is how skincare expert and master esthetician, Lisa Michelle Nadeau, L.E. describes the sheep placenta facial. It’s no wonder then that the stars of the red carpet and rockers alike flock to their dermatologist for the latest technology-results-driven facial, which claims also to boost skin immunity and help fight inflammation. How does the placenta facial work and where do the stem cells come from? O-PLACENTA™ is an incredibly nutrient rich and potent form of ovine (sheep) placenta extract. The formulation utilizes a proprietary process to activate dormant stem cells which originate in the placenta and umbilical cord tissue of sheep. The placenta and umbilical cord stem cells are ethically harvested from sheep, post birth, so there is absolutely no harm to the animals. Placenta and umbilical cord tissue derived stem cells share many similarities with embryonic stem cells. Like embryonic stem cells, placenta tissue cells are also pluripotent, which means they repair every type of cell in the body, and in this case are being utilized to repaired “aged” skin. The O-PLACENTA™ Stem Cell facial provides exceptional results by transferring large numbers of bio-active stem cells directly to the dermis of the face. When applied in sufficient concentration, the stem cell products “de-age” the skin. The revital-

ized, younger skin cells immediately begin producing increased levels of collagen, glycoproteins, and elastic fibers in the skin’s extra cellular matrix as they did in the past. The “de-aging” effect is cumulative and improves with each facial. To be clear there isn’t a placenta being applied to the face. Actually, it’s the stem cells, growth factors, nutrients, proteins and amino acid found in the placenta extracts that make up the elegant gentle gel formulation. The proteins work at an intracellular level, not just on the surface. As for results, one can expect increased elasticity (which helps soften fine lines and wrinkles), smoother skin texture, and improved skin hydration. The facial has also been proven to help inflammation of Rosacea, age spots and acne lesions. The Anti-aging and anti-oxidant benefits will leave the skin baby soft and glowing.

10 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Teeth
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
Small Changes For A Big Impact On Your Smile
It may seem easy to take care of your smile – brush, floss, repeat, right? – but there are several pitfalls in our daily routines that could hinder our smile. If you feel that you are doing all you can to take care of your pearly whites but something is lacking, you might be making an absentminded mistake with your daily care. Multitasking while you brush – If you’re brushing in the shower or while checking your social media accounts, you could be missing all of your tooth surfaces. It’s best to brush your teeth in front of your bathroom mirror where you have a greater chance of doing a more thorough job because you’re not distracted. Using social media as your dentist – The internet is full of seemingly helpful but weird dental tips, such as rubber band braces or whitening with peroxide. Dentists have years of training to be able to safely care for your teeth, so leave the DIY projects to curtains and cakes, and trust your dentist with your smile. Avoiding X-rays – Many people avoid X-rays because of fear of radiation, but radiation exposure associated with dentistry represents a minor contribution to the total exposure from all natural and manmade sources. X-rays are important because it allows the dentist to examine what they can’t see with the naked eye, including cavities between teeth or a cyst or other pathology in the jaw. Storing your wet toothbrush in a travel case – We all know that bacteria thrives in moist environments, so try to make sure your toothbrush is dry before you pack it away, or at least take it out to dry once you reach your destination. Keeping your tongue or lip piercing – Keep the piercings out of your mouth. Patients with tongue or lip piercings have a greater chance of fracturing or chipping their teeth from biting on their piercings. Also, some patients have gum recession and other soft-tissue injuries from the piercings coming into repeated contact with tender areas of their mouth. Studies show that
56 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
problems increase the longer you have them, so now is the time to put your smile first. Ditching your retainer – If you’ve ever had braces or Invisalign, you know just how smart it is to keep wearing your retainer most nights, forever. Your teeth are constantly shifting so even if you have perfectly straight teeth after treatment, the teeth will move and you’ll be without your newly found perfect smile. If you’ve lost your retainer, visit your dentist for a new one and make sure you consistently wear it. Skipping dental appointments – If your dental anxiety makes you hate visiting the dentist, the best way to cope is to visit the dentist. Most patients don’t like to visit their dentist because, when they eventually do go, they are told they need a lot of work. If you see your dentist every six months for routine checkups, you are less likely to run into problems and will, therefore, not hate the dentist as much. Additionally, there are some dental offices that are designed like spas with serene-like settings to quell dental anxiety, so find a dental office that fits your needs. Not drinking enough water – Lucky for us, Delray Beach’s tap water is fluoridated, which means that the simple act of drinking tap water can help strengthen your teeth. You can also find that some bottled water is fluoridated, but if not, make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride. Rinsing with water and drinking water is
also very important for rinsing sugars and acids from your teeth after you eat, so remember to hydrate as often as you can. Using a brush that’s too hard – Like wooden toothpicks, hard-bristled brushes are too tough on your teeth and gums. Not only will hard bristles erode your enamel, research indicates that your gums will suffer as well because hard-bristled brushes are more likely than softer brushes to cause gingivitis and tissue damage. Getting addicted to juicing – We all love our juices and the tons of vitamins and nutrients we get from them, but juices also bathe our mouths in everything from corrosive acids (from ingredients like lemon juice) to a high concentration of sugar. If you love your juicing too much to give it up, minimize the damage to your teeth by rising with water after consuming acidic juices, and be sure to brush your teeth after fruity, sugar-rich juices. These everyday tips should help keep you smiling happy and healthy, so incorporate as many of them as you can into your daily routine. Also, be sure to talk with your dentist and hygienist about any concerns or questions you have because they are here to help! Early Bird specials do not only apply to dining out and Black Friday shopping, but also to avid, dedicated gym-goers. In fact, it reaps tremendous rewards for your body’s metabolism, focus, and sense of accomplishment every day.
The worst noise is the sound of an alarm in the morning, especially if you did not get a good night’s sleep. So it’s no wonder many people sleep as long as possible before work and hit the gym in the afternoon/evening. This used to be me; as a high school teacher for the last eight years, I’ve felt I needed as much sleep as possible to ensure I gave my students 100%. With whatever energy I had left, I would venture to the gym or on a long run, in hopes it was enough to push me through an intense workout. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that although my motivation is strong, I don’t enjoy the workouts nearly as much after a long day of work. As a result, I’ve switched to predominantly working out in the early morning, and I’ve noticed tremendous effects on my body, physical performance, and overall energy levels throughout the day. Clears Your Schedule Oftentimes, unexpected work obligations or last-minute family emergencies prevent us from exercising. If you work out early, you don’t spend the rest of your day thinking about the workout ahead of you, or how to find the energy to make it to the gym later in the day. If you work out early, you will never fall victim to making excuses for missing a workout.
Avoid Crowds Nobody likes rush hour, whether it’s spent on your commute to work, the mall on Saturday, or at the gym between 5-7pm. There’s nothing worse than getting to the gym after a long day and then waiting for a piece of equipment. Get to the gym early, get your pick of equipment AND a cleaner, less crowded workout environment. Maximize Your Body’s Potential Long work days can really take a toll on

our bodies, leaving us dependent on energy supplements to power us through a workout. By working out early, you are fresh off a night’s sleep and can better focus on an efficient, challenging workout to start your day off right. Additionally, your body’s naturally producing hormones that build muscle mass, like testosterone, are at their peak, so working out in the morning certainly works to your advantage. Increase Alertness, Focus, and Metabolism It’s no secret that exercising releases endorphins. Since the body is aroused post-workout, this ultimately increases our alertness and focus for many hours after exercising. While I’ve always assumed working out early would leave me sleepy by noon, I found that I was much more energetic, patient, and sharper in my teaching after morning workouts. Furthermore, morning workouts raise your metabolism for the rest of the day. Since your body will now be more alert throughout the day, this will lead to improved sleep in the evening. Better Eating Decisions After finishing an early morning HIIT class, the last thing you want to do is eat a large blueberry muffin. After a morning workout, you’re far more likely to make healthier eating choic-
es, like eggs, oats, or your favorite protein bar. Studies have always shown that people who eat breakfast are healthier, fitter, and consume less calories over the course of the day, as opposed to those who skip it. Let’s say I’ve convinced you to wake up early and drag yourself to the gym, but you’re unsure how you will actually get “in the zone” at 6am. This is where fitness classes comes to light. Take advantage of your gym’s spin classes for some help with early morning cardio, or try a HIIT or powerlifting class to guarantee an intense workout. You’ll learn some new exercises, meet new people, and forget how early it is! As a fitness instructor, my goal is to challenge my clients, and I challenge you to set tomorrow’s alarm a couple of hours before your daily routine begins, prepare your gym and/or work attire, and get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow may be a challenge, but the days thereafter will get much easier. When you start to wonder why you’re waking up at 5am, remember how great you’ll feel from 7am onward. MERCEDES-BENZ OF DELRAY BEACH Car Buying Is A Breeze By diane feen
{
photos by melissa korman
Car buying will never be the same – especially at Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach.
The reason is simple. The internet has streamlined the process and given everyone (buyer and seller) a chance to get what they want with the flick of the wrist. “Seventy percent of car business is generated by eCommerce, whether followed up with a phone call or a visit to the showroom. Of those who walk into the showroom 95 percent have still done research about the car online,” said Andy Constant, Development Manager for Phone/eCommerce of South Florida for AutoNation.
60 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
The good news, according to Constant, is that you can shop online at your own pace, get all the information you need and then start the process of buying a car – all in your pajamas (if you want). Since Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach is part of the AutoNation family (the largest auto retailer in the US) they are adhering to this swift online sales momentum. They have six eCommerce salespeople with over 110 years of experience collectively. Lisa Guarini was recently promoted to
Joe Taylor, Internet Manager and John Stefaniw, Internet Manager
eCommerce Sales Director of MercedesBenz of Delray Beach. Though Guarini is most humble in her accomplishments, she has risen in the ranks the old fashioned way, through hard work. “The way of the world of car buying is on the Internet, that’s why it is so exciting to be a part of the eCommerce team. It’s made
car buying simple and 98 percent of our customers do their research on their smart phones, tablets or computers,” said Guarini. AutoNation is so bullish about online auto sales that they poured $100 million into a ‘digital storefront’ that lets customers buy a vehicle online complete with trade-in and financing. Not only can you have a live chat with someone at Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach, but you can reserve the car of your dreams online (for 48 hours) with a refundable deposit. There is also a feature called “We’ll Buy Your Car” that allows you to get a tradein value and start the process of trading your car in online. “When you’re on the showroom floor you have to wait for something to happen, but in eCommerce you can make things happen. We give quick response and answer all questions tailored to the needs of the customer,” said eCommerce salesperson Talbott Summers. Summers is not kidding - the reviews say it all. “We are so in love with the team we encountered at Mercedes-Benz of Delray. Our salesman Joseph Taylor’s experience showed in his product knowledge and exemplary customer service. Anyone can sell a vehicle, but Joseph made us feel like a part of the family. We would not have walked away with our M class if it was not for Joe,” said Sherryl DeLisser. There are a lot of reviews that tell the tale of Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach no pressure zone and unwavering customer service that wows customers. We pay attention to detail and build relationships (and trust) through good communication. I had a customer from California who was in Germany and wanted to pick out a car for his mother, who lives in Delray Beach. He found a Mercedes online, read a good Google review about me and then sent his mother to buy the car from me. I treat everyone’s mom the way I would treat my own mother.” A lot of car buyers are touting the virtues of Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach. “Positively the one of best car leasing experience I have ever had! The instant you enter the showroom you are made to feel ‘Great.’ This dealership is characterized by professionalism, teamwork and an overwhelming focus on the buyer’s needs and concerns. Mike Luciano worked very hard to find the best car for me rather than the best deal for himself,” said Louis Dicarlo. The other big news at Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach is the new sporty AMG GT

S car said to be sculptured to conquer the wind and weight and capture the stares and hearts of drivers. This sexy sporty car has 503-horsepower and hand-crafted V-8 bi-turbo motor that delivers 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The console has a “dynamic select” that allows you to twist a knob on the console in four modes. “Every brilliant detail combines purpose with poise. The result is at once timeless and trendsetting, and a sports car that seduces your gaze to linger.” The eCommerce sales team at MercedesBenz of Delray Beach consists of Mike Luciano, Ron Miller, Talbott Summers, Chris Plasencia, John Stefaniw and Joe Taylor. Each one has been lauded as being professional, trustworthy, informative and helpful to car buyers. Another terrific eCommerce feature at Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach is that you can build the car of your dreams. You can se-
lect the color, the interior, trim and model. If you don’t live nearby the car can be shipped to you, or you can stop by Delray Beach (known as one of the most fun cities in the US) and pick it up. It’s a win-win for everyone – especially for the Millennials, who do most everything online. “Millennials want to chat online and get the out-the-door price. They don’t want to come in and chat with a salesperson. I am excited about the direction eCommerce is taking car sales. I love my job and I love my customers,” said Guarini. When you’re in Delray Beach stop by Mercedes-Benz of Delray Beach dealership and check out the sparkling sleek cars that almost whisper in your ear – “take me home.” Mercedes-Benz of Delray 1001 Linton Blvd. 888-216-1525 Delray Beach www.mbdelray.com

Stepping through the doors, you immediately feel a sense of calmness as you are greeted with a tranquil, spa-like atmosphere.
“I wanted to bring clinical results; results that clients can actually see, not just a feel good facial or treatment but treatments that are corrective. It’s very effective because I write a treatment plan for each client, and I really listen to what their needs are and what bothers them about their skin cosmetically speaking,” said Laura. Rilluma Esthetics provides these clinical results in a luxurious and relaxing environment. The owner doesn’t rush clients in and out the door. They have a personalized appointment in a private setting. “I build a relationship with my clients through coaching and education throughout the entire treatment plan. The goal is to become a true skincare coach as I take the client through their short and long term goals.
Clear FX Diamond Microdermabrasion treatment with Oxygen & Vitamin Infusion
I offer a comprehensive clinical approach to skincare rejuvenation and correction in a professional, and very relaxing environment,” added Laura. The local spa offers a variety of services including skin calming facials, signature hydrating facials, Microdermabrasion, skin clear peels, collagen booster, chemical peels, Micro Needling, Camouflage Makeup Application, and more. The treatments range from monthly maintenance and anti-aging to a deeper correction of skin conditions. Medical skincare products are also available including ZO Medical Skin Care, Avene and Glytone. “What differentiates Rilluma Esthetics from other spas is education and dermatology expertise. I have worked in dermatology for over 13 years, so I know what can and can’t be achieved within my scope and am able to recommend a patient see a dermatologist if need be,” said the owner. “The reason I opened the business was to get back to basics, and let my clients have the total wow factor. They come in and not only look great but I provide a service and treat them with respect and give them the time that they need. They are not rushed out the door; I want them to get the time and quality they need.” The local business owner goes beyond just the treatments… She hosts quaint luncheon events to educate clients about new technology in skincare and cosmetic treatments. Laura also runs monthly Facebook contests and loyalty promotions such as birthday and anniversary specials. Laura finds it rewarding to be able to see many incredible transformations in her clients. From teenagers with acne problems to mothers in need of corrective skincare, she has helped her clients feel more confident inside and out. “I am able to listen with an open heart, an open mind and a realistic result. I feel blessed that I have the most amazing clients. I felt this was my calling,” said Laura, “It’s very rewarding being able to go through the change with the client, and the loyalty that they have. I see many of my clients in town and they introduce me to their families and that’s big. It is especially honoring in Delray Beach because Delray is such a close community and truly about building relationships. Being really plugged into the community is big to me, and providing that wow factor for people. If you do what you love then everything else will be great.” “The purpose is to make sure they are getting the results they came here for. If I can give them a wow factor, and if they can leave here and say it has been the most amazing treatment, then I know I have done my job and helped someone,” said Laura. Rilluma Esthetics and its owner have been successful in fulfilling that mission. Many of Laura’s clients have praised her for their rejuvenated skin and returned self confidence. “The best facial ever! I like it so much that I bought one for my sister. I’ve had many facials in the U.S. and in Europe and I can say that Rilluma Esthetics is outstanding and worth every penny. I’m now going for Microdermabrasion and if it’s anything like her facials, I will have hit the jackpot!” said satisfied customer Maria P. When you dream big, the results are often bigger than imaginable.
That’s what happened to Jerilyn Walter, Broker-Owner of Posh Properties in Pineapple Grove. Walter has a history of rising to the top of every profession she’s entered. She was President of Medical Collections Services, Inc., a California State Appointed Receiver and an Arizona State Appointed Trustee. She opened medical offices and has been a leader and headline speaker in the medical field. It was 15 years ago that Walter turned her attention (and business acumen) to real estate. She has not only been successful in this career, but she brought along the same fervor and passion that allowed her to rise to the top of the medical collection field. “One of the many reasons Posh Properties is successful is because I have opened and op-

erated successful businesses all of my adult life. Another reason for our success is the constant interaction we have with our customers. We keep their best interest in front of us at all times. It’s not how many houses we can sell, it’s taking the time to build relationships and taking care of our customers,” said Walter, whose grandmother was a successful realtor in Southern California. Posh Properties has 14 real estate agents with sales last year in excess of $67 million. According to Walter, agents who live up to Posh Properties standards are professional, hard working and cater to customer’s needs before and after the closing. “Posh Properties agents are all workers, this is not a hobby for them; they’re all full time real estate agents. They have long term goals and are all going for the brass ring of success in this industry.” As part of their commitment to customers, Posh Properties recently started a real estate property management division. As
Walter puts it, you need quality control - and the best way to get results for real estate investors is to hire the best people to maintain their property. “We found that owner-investors needed someone to maintain their property, collect rent, take care of permits, manage landscaping, etc. We are starting with our investors and will continue to branch out.” When Walter says “we” she means her team of real estate agents. And when it comes to Posh Properties the team is of utmost importance. They share knowledge, support each other’s success and spend time together outside the office. For real estate agent Michele Yales, Posh Properties is the best place to work. The former credit union executive has a passion for real estate and a proven track record of making deals happen. “I do business with integrity and reliability and I leave no stone unturned in completing my customer’s real estate transaction.”
‘”Because our Agents live, sell and enjoy the South Florida lifestyle, we understand the market, it’s trends and future developments” , and is only part of the reason so many of our customers have made us their agency of choice and why we enjoy a 75% return or referral business
Catherine McGlennon is a real estate pro who developed commercial properties for some of the largest food franchises in the US. In the residential real estate market she has soared to success due to her diligence and positive ‘can do’ attitude. “I work seven days a week and am always accessible to my clients. Real estate is not just about selling a home; it’s about being with the client after the sale. I help them find an insurance agent, interior designer or whatever they need,” said McGlennon who continues to volunteer for Tico Torres/Bon Jovi Golf Classic, Chris Evert Charities, and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Jerome Golden Center. When it comes to team work you have to meet Tiffany Savino and Samantha Johnsen. The duo work together to offer customers ex-
cellent service and an in-depth knowledge of the South Florida real estate market. Johnsen prides herself on building meaningful relationships through integrity, availability and commitment to buyers, sellers (and renters) to ensure a “win-win” outcome with every transaction. “Real estate allows me to utilize my skills in sales, marketing and public relations to help customers reach their Real Estate goals when buying a new home, second home or investment property.” Tiffany Savino was raised in Palm Beach County and owned and operated a successful small business. She puts her customer’s first and always makes sure they have whatever they need. Her extensive knowledge of the Intracoastal Waterways, inlets and the amenities surrounding the Boating Lifestyle are a plus.
Working together to reach their customers’ real estate goals is one of Posh Properties’ keys to their success
Posh Real estate agent Anthony Aliberti is someone you would not only want to buy a house from, but would want as a friend. He’s charming, affable and smart when it comes to South Florida real estate. He relishes the Posh Properties’ Pineapple Grove location and finds that it adds to his ability to help clients. “Being in downtown Delray is like being at ground zero. I know all the buildings - which ones to avoid for clients - and ones people should buy to live in or invest in. This is a great time to be in the real estate market.” Walter is proud of her team and proud to be a part of charitable giving in the community. Posh Properties is involved in the Delray Library, Chris Evert Charities, Jerome Golden Center, Golfview Harbor Scholarship Fund, and others. Walter also gives every buyer (and seller) a Delray Library Foothold Certificate from the library. “We want our clients to feel part of the community. This way they get invited to events and functions at the Library and the library gets funds for the new children’s wing. It’s a win-win for everyone,” said Walter, who is knowledgeable in all areas of real estate transactions, including document and proposal preparation, lease negotiations, new builder sales, investment properties, auction, re-sales and annual and seasonal rentals. Delray Beach has a new ride in town that gives residents and visitors an up-close tour of the beautiful seaside city.
Exhilaride Street-Legal Golf Cart Rentals offers a fun and green way to explore what Delray Beach and nearby coastal towns have to offer. These electric golf carts, which have 4 or 6 seats, take visitors and residents from the beach to downtown, Artist’s Alley to Pineapple Grove, westward to the Wakodahatchee Wetlands and along the coast to Boca Raton, or as far as Palm Beach! Husband and wife team, David and Cindi Freeburn, decided to move from the Philadelphia area and leave their corporate jobs behind to open this new business in a town they grew to love. “We wanted to open a business with a component of doing good and offering green incentives. We researched different businesses and knew that golf cart rentals in Key West and other coastal areas were well received and eco-friendly. Exhilaride promotes the multi-modal transit lifestyle, helping the downtown community and beach area with less pollution, a smaller parking footprint, and enhancing the vibe in Delray Beach,” said the Freeburns. Green vehicles are gaining popularity and Exhilaride Golf Carts provide an “on demand” solution for residents and visitors alike. Who needs to own golf carts when Exhilaride is in town? A variety of people are choosing to hop on, save gas and more closely explore the local area, including tourists, locals, business owners, families, non-profits, universities and more! Business owners, such as realtors, architects, and professional services are using Exhilaride to give their clients a tour of the City and beaches. These “green” vehicles

Exhilaride also works with hotels (some offer stay and ride promotions) and guest rental properties and will deliver your “green” golf cart to your location. Exhilaride was even a recent finalist for the 2015 Best New Business award! “We offer daytrip, 24 hour, weekend, weekly or monthly rentals. We believe we are the only company that rents street legal electric carts in Palm Beach County, and we deliver as far away as Fort Lauderdale!” said the owners. “When you are in a golf cart, you are much more connected to your
surroundings and your community. We’re trying to build a golf cart culture in Delray and the City is very supportive, planning to add parking spaces for bicycles, scooters and golf carts both at the beach and downtown in the coming months.” The owners expect the business will continue to grow and give locals and visitors alike an enjoyable way to experience Delray Beach and neighboring towns. “Exhilaride is bringing good, green, fun to Delray Beach and beyond,” said the Freeburns. VENETIAN NAIL SPA DELRAY A Point Of Pleasure

And everyone who enters the doors of this Nail Spa is equally as joyful about its existence. “I’ve been coming here for 10 years. I started going to the Weston shop and now I live in Delray and come here. I’ve never gone to any other nail salon but Vivian’s,” said Shadine Buchanen, who sat upright with her finger tips wrapped in tin foil. It was co-owner Vivian Nguyen’s plan to follow in the Venetian Nail Spa footsteps and create an environment that is palatial and soothing at the same time. Although grandiosity is often overrated in the comfort zone of sensibility, in this case it works beautifully. There is an azure blue cloud formed ceiling, crystal chandeliers and a calming waterfall. But Venetian Nail Spa’s real secret is customer service with a huge dose of cleanliness and an injection of friendliness. “We are very professional and personable here. Our customers are not just a number. We know them by name and they’re like our family,” said Vivian, a voracious businesswoman and mother of two. Venetian Nail Spa was one of the first businesses to stake its claim out West (in the Marketplace Shopping Center) and is likely one of its consistently busiest. There’s always a flurry of activity, yet the tone and tonality of its namesake is always calm and serene. That’s what draws regulars like Maxine Glass. “I’ve been coming here since I moved to the area. It’s new,

clean and the girls are great. I come for a pedicure and manicure every two weeks – Yury is great,” said Glass, who favors French manicures and colorful toenail colors. Venetian Nail Spa Delray offers manicures, nail extensions, pedicures, hot stone spa pedicures, milk and honey foot massages, deluxe manicures with exfoliating hand massages, NexGenNails, UV liquid gel manicures and waxing. They’re also using Nu Skin products that
adhere to Venetian Nail Spa’s high standard of excellence. It plays a key role in their deluxe pedicure, The Masterpiece Pedicure. This luxurious feat of comfort and pampering begins with an herbal mineral bath for your feet and progresses to foot and leg massages, reflexology and foot scrub with gels, creams and Baobab body butter. The result is pure bliss. Their comfy leather chairs have a massage option and the libation will cure whatever ails you (wine for
relaxation and water or soda for hydration). It’s also a bit of heaven for your body, mind and soul. And it’s not just a woman thing. “I’ve been coming here for over two years,” said Dan, who brings his daughter to enjoy the sublime manicures and pedicures at Venetian Nail Spa. “I come here regularly because its spotlessly clean, the staff is amazing and it’s such a nice place.” To continue to make sure that they meet client’s needs and desires, Vivian recently created a line of nail colors called 88 New York. The polish line is ethereal in nature and inspired by the tonality of the earth’s most precious landscapes. Though outer beauty is honored and honed to perfection, the owners of Venetian Nail Spa don’t skimp on the importance of cleanliness. The Pedicure chairs are bleached after each customer and sanitized at the end of the day, and the nail equipment is sterilized in sealed plastic before use. Not only do they keep coming back, but clients like Stephanie Langnas bring others to enjoy this soothing ride. “I have been coming here for a long time, but today I brought my friend Ryan with me. He’s never had a pedicure before. But my step dad and my mom come here every weekend,” said Langnas, who is an actress in LA. It’s also a common sight to see young children sitting in large pedicure chairs (next to their moms and grandmas) savoring the experience of nail polish and nurturing. It’s easy to see why. The pampering and tenderness of their nail techs is second to none. “I have customers who are so relaxed when they get a pedicure that they fall asleep in the chair,” said Nail Tech Kayden, who is a master at polishing and massaging your extremities to a state of divine bliss. It is this bliss that has clients coming back to Venetian Nail Spa on a weekly basis. It looks like Versailles and feels like an extended family. Your job is to sit, relax and enjoy this healthy mind-body experience. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and an inner glow in your heart. Every November we make a list of 10 things to be grateful for in Delray Beach. November is the month of Thanksgiving and while we think we should be grateful year-round, it seems that our thoughts turn to gratitude this time of year. So in the spirit, here’s our 2015 list. In no particular order:
are grateful for the extraordinary ► We people in Delray who volunteer their time
for good causes. Whether it’s reading to kids, serving as docents at Delray Center for the Arts or supporting our library, a village is only as strong as its people. Delray has a wonderful citizenry who have grace and generosity year after year. As we approach the holiday season, please consider our less fortunate neighbors and consider getting involved in food and toy drives to make the holidays brighter.
are also very grateful for “Free Friday ► We Night Concerts” at the Delray Center for the Arts. Where else can we sit with friends on a star lit night and listen to great music at the wonderful amphitheater? Every Friday at 7:30 we have a place to gather and there’s nothing like it; great music, great venue, food trucks and dancing.
local business community is the ► Our heartbeat of our city. Not only do local businesses create jobs, but the money they generate stays in our community. They also provide needed services and goods and always seem to rally to support, sponsor and attend important local events and causes. As a local magazine, we celebrate their contributions every month and are grateful for their support of your Atlantic Ave Magazine.

Early Detection Is Prevention By Diane Feen

November is National Healthy Skin Month and Dr. Danielle Manolakos wants everyone to know that they should get a full body skin exam every year.
The reasons are quite simple. “One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. But the good news is that with early diagnosis there is over a 90 percent survival rate for Melanoma. The best part is that we’re getting better at diagnosing skin cancer at its earliest stage,” said Dr. Manolakos, board-certified dermatologist. The reason for Dr. Manolakos’s optimism is that there are tools available to help make the diagnosis earlier. One such tool is the use of dermatoscopy, which is a non-invasive handheld light and magnifying glass. “This is essentially skin surface microscopy. With this tool I can look at a deeper pattern of a mole than with normal vision to help diagnose skin cancer earlier which means we can start treatment earlier.” The good news about skin cancer, according to Dr. Manolakos, is that it is often not as devastating as other forms of cancer as long as it is diagnosed and treated early. But, skin Lauren Kalina performs microneedling

cancer is the most common form of cancer. And, you don’t have to be in the sun to get it, which is why Dr. Manolakos urges everyone to get a yearly skin exam. During the exam the doctor will also educate you on what to look for in changes to your skin and how to protect yourself (with a discussion of sunscreen use). “If you have a spot that is bleeding, scaling or has a scab it’s not normal and you should come in for an evaluation. Everyone should know the ABCDE’s of skin cancer.” When detecting skin cancer the A is for asymmetrical
spots, the B is for borders that have jagged edges, the C is for multiple colors, the D is for diameter (it shouldn’t be larger than a the tip of a pencil) and E is for evolving (the spot changes). These are all potential signs of Melanoma. Gold Coast Dermatology Center treats all conditions that are related to skin, hair and nails, as well as cosmetic and surgical dermatology. Dr. Manolakos’ enthusiasm and passion for dermatology is what has garnered her with a stellar reputation. To accommodate her patients she has recently

opened a new office that is double in size. The office is also home to one of the most diligent and educated aestheticians in town – Lauren Kalina. Kalina is as enthusiastic and dedicated as Dr. Manolakos and prides herself on being a licensed medical aesthetician who does medical grade micro-needling, customized facials, collagen infusion facials, deep cleansing facials (for adults and teens) and highest quality chemical peels. Kalina, who opened one of the first day spas in East Boca and has 25 years of experience, performs medical-grade micro-needling to stimulate collagen and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It lifts and tightens skin and can reduce stretch marks and acne scars. One of the most popular treatments for keeping your skin youthful is the VI Peel®. It contains powerful ingredients that provide dramatic results with no pain and little down-time. According to Kalina, it is the most requested peel and recommends that it should be done two to three times a year to assure radiant younger looking skin. It tones and tightens the skin, is perfect for all skin colors and skin types (including the most sensitive skin), improves texture and reduces pore size. The VI Peel® also helps reduce age spots and sun damage. “We are dedicated to helping our patients reach (and maintain) the most vibrant skin possible by offering the highest quality skincare treatment options available. The reason to come to us is that the doctor and I discuss treatment protocols. It’s medically supervised, customized skincare at its best, with the expertise from both angles. We have created an environment that offers doctor supervised medical quality results oriented treatments in a relaxing spa atmosphere. It’s the best of both worlds,” said Kalina. Dr. Manolakos is a compassionate and caring doctor who understands the science behind healthy skin. Her mission every day is to help people and make a difference in the world. A Star Is Born In Boca
ACP HOME INTERIORS By Diane Feen

ACP Home Interiors is giving birth to a new creation. It’s one that needs no diapers and will not stay up all night.
It will, however, be getting the proper nurturing and watchful eye of its owners Bernard and Stephanie Molyneux. Because if anyone knows how to create excitement and creativity in the furniture (and home décor) arena its Bernard and Stephanie. Their stores are rooted in passion and maintained with a keen sense of design elegance. That’s why they just opened a new store in Boca Raton. They wanted home owners (and condo dwellers) to have a taste of the design perfection and decorative whimsy they’re famous for. “ACP Home Interiors has a wonderful blend of Coastal, English, French, Farmhouse and Contemporary furniture and accessories. When I sold my home the buyer loved all of my furniture and bought it all. Now with my new home I get to shop all over again. I love this store. It’s hard to get me out of there! If there is a store that has a variety as fabulous as this I haven’t found it yet,” said Jill Enman Baum. Enman Baum isn’t the only one fascinated with ACP’s selection of furniture,

bathroom vanities, accessories, paintings, lighting and bedding. Recently a customer brought in the producers of the HGTV reality show “House Hunters” to film a segment in their Delray Beach store. ACP has a history that has garnered fans from all over the country. They started out in Deerfield Beach, opened a wonderful store in Delray Beach and have gone full circle back to Boca Raton. Stephanie likes to say their new Boca store is a marriage of their other two locations. “We want the public to feel comfortable here. Our hope is that they say, ‘wow, this is a room I can actually see myself living in.’ A person’s home should be their refuge,” said Stephanie, who exemplifies the beauty
of her surroundings at both stores. The Delray store is equally as enchanting, but has a more coastal flair. The Deerfield Beach store (that’s 35,000-square-feet) has a large eclectic range of furnishings for every room. One thing for sure though – you won’t see their furniture anywhere else. That’s because they travel around the world handpicking pieces designed by artisans hailed in their craft. Bernard’s father was in the furniture business in England and when Bernard came to Florida he followed in his father’s footsteps. The results have been superb. So good, in fact, that they are now offering kitchens and kitchen installations from
their Boca Raton location. In an age when home renovation is akin to root canal this is a welcome addition to the ACP offerings. “We created this store to have a comfortable feel so decorators can bring their customers and enjoy being in a warm inviting space. We welcome anyone looking for home furnishings to come shop (or browse) at our new store. There’s something for everyone at all prices,” said Stephanie, who grew up in Boca Raton. This new Boca store has an eclectic mixture of contemporary furnishings (and accessories), traditional, and classic pieces with an updated twist. Some look like they were plucked from a French farmhouse and others a Chateau in the Riviera. “Our new store brings everything we have ever done together, it’s more transitional and mixes the old with the new,” said Bernard. The entrance of the Boca Raton store says it all. There’s wallpaper that looks exactly like wood planks (from UK designer Andrew Martin) and an overstuffed crème chair with a pillow that says, “Hello Sunshine.” Beneath the framed inspirational sayings of Maya Angelou and St. Therese is bench seating with decorative pillows. There is also an extensive selection of sofas and side swivel chairs with washable slipcovers available in many different fabrics (made in the USA). “These slip cover sofas have been very popular. People enjoy the comfort and ease of washing or cleaning the slip covers. We also sell upholstered and leather furniture as well,” said Stephanie. There is plenty to marvel at in this new Boca Raton location - starting with the universality of their merchandise. Crystal chandeliers have iron encasement and clear Lucite end tables have natural rope handles. Bernard likes to reference the new store to the genre of industrial chic. Which is true, but that’s not the entire story. There are cabinets and chests with antique adornment that assimilate a contemporary feel in natural woods such as unfinished pine or elm. Tables and chairs are made of wood but have fabric cushions and glass inlay.
There are also rattan chairs, French country breakfast cabinets (in recycled wood) and dishes that look like ceramic, but are made of unbreakable material. If you’re looking for a bookshelf, wine rack or tall chest with a statuesque personality they have them. Some have lattice woodwork, rod iron handles, hinges, mirrors or geometric designs. They also have a wonderful collection of gift items, pillows, diffusers and stylized books with sayings from John Lennon, Steve Jobs and Coco Chanel on the binding. Their large collection of vintage Louis Vuitton trunks is exceptional and they can restore yours to its original luster. ACP Home Interiors is as much a homeaway-from-home as a furniture store. It’s charming, inviting and exciting with design elements everywhere you look. Stop by the new Boca Raton store and feast your eyes on furniture and home décor that will delight your senses and warm your heart. ACP Home Interiors Boca Raton 850 North Dixie Hwy. The DBMC to Join the likes of Burt Reynolds and Jack Nicklaus BY STEPHEN CHRISANTHUS Photo BY Emiliano Brooks
{
The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) is back in the running for the coveted Providencia award for the second year in a row. Everybody — time to vote!
It’s time to award the largest tourism honor in Palm Beach County and the DBMC is back in the final 3. The Providencia Award is given to an organization or individual who has contributed extraordinarily to the vitality and prosperity of The Palm Beaches as a tourist destination. To grasp the magnitude of the award and what it would mean to Delray Beach take a look at a few of the past winners: Burt Reynolds, Jack Nicklaus, Delta Airlines, and the Flagler Museum, just to name few. Last year the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative was beat out by the PGA’s Honda Classic. Coming in behind Pro Golf’s best players is an honorable way to lose, but Delray Beach isn’t in the business of losing. This year the DBMC is asking for the support of the whole City to vote them to number one. Their hope is the thousands that come out to enjoy their events, like the Fourth of July,

Christmas and New Year’s, will take a few seconds to return the favor with a few clicks of the mouse. “Of all the great cities, events and attractions in Palm Beach County we were again named as one of the top three tourism organizations in the county. I’m so proud our small team has been recognized at this level for the second year in a row”, says Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the DMBC. Over the last few decades Delray Beach has grown from a quiet “Village by the Sea” to the “Most Fun Small Town in the USA,” a year-round tourist magnet with the most dynamic thoroughfare of hot restaurants, nightclubs and cultural activities in Palm Beach County – and credit for much of this business, retail and hospitality boom goes to the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC). But what has this four person marketing machine been up to this year to
warrant such an honor? Well how about generating a positive economic impact of $7,775,000, media coverage value of $2.2 million and more than 1.2 billion media impressions to start. Some of their marketing efforts include helping get voted Top Ten Happiest Seaside Towns by Coastal Living, going to Pesaro, Italy to represent the Sister City partnership and pushing their Beach Buddies and Be Hot Here marketing campaigns across state lines. Their love of their city and their fellow Delrayians drives them to do their best. They now are asking the community to give them that final push to number one. Help Delray stand out in Palm Beach County, vote for the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative to win the 2015 Providencia Award. AdvertoriAl
Hair Loss
By Kenneth n. Woliner, M.d., A.B.F.M.
People just don’t understand.
“ ” Marisa definitely had hair, but that didn’t stop her from being devastated. “I’m afraid to wash my hair. I’m shedding worse than a German Shepherd in spring [1].” I’ve learned how important it is to listen to all of what my patients’ have to say; and this is especially true when doing consultations about hair loss. After a good five minutes of venting, I was able to start asking some questions. “Anything else?” “Besides my pony tail not being as thick as it used to be? I’m so worried I won’t have any hair left that my stomach is tied up in knots. I wear St. Agnes of Rome around my neck hoping my prayers will be heard soon [2]. Until then, I have to take Pepcid with my coffee.” “Other than prayer, have you tried anything else?” “I’ve seen every type of doctor you can imagine. My primary scolded me for doing the hCG diet and made me start eating again [3]. My GYN said I’m not yet in menopause so she referred me to an Endo. My thyroid tests were ‘in range’ so he sent me to the dermatologist. I’m not a candidate for steroid injections so I then went to the hair transplant surgeon for a consult. I left him with Viviscal vitamins and shampoo, prescriptions for spironolactone, Propecia, and Rogaine, but still, no hair.” “Hmmm …” As Marisa was speaking, I was simultaneously reviewing her old records. “I don’t see where they every checked you for estrogen dominance, thyroid antibodies, insulin resistance, or adrenal fatigue [4].” Dr. Woliner, that’s why I’m here. You’re known all over the Internet as someone that looks at everything.” “My practice is named ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a holistic approach. After our 80-minute consultation today, I’ll check for things that weren’t looked at yet to find the cause(s) of your hair loss. Then, we’ll put together a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet, exercise, vitamins, OTC meds, and even prescriptions, as necessary.” Marisa came back ten days later to go over her labs. “I have bad news and good news. It’s not just one thing; you have twelve different findings that are abnormal. I break them down into ‘things you’re missing that you need to get’, ‘things you got that you need to get rid of’, and ‘hormone balancing’ [5].” “What’s the good news?” “They’re all treatable! Instead of using the same cookie-cutter approach to everybody, I can tailor my therapies directly to the specific problems you have.” “Like what?” “For starters, you might not be anemic, but you’re really low in iron [6].” “I can’t take iron pills. I’m nauseated already.” “That’s okay; we can give iron to you by injection here in the office. Quite a few of my patients periodically tank up their body’s iron stores that way.” “What else did you find? “When I see a slightly low WBC (white cell) count; that’s a sign of excessive stress [7]. Your coffee isn’t the culprit, but it’s your half-fast way of self-medicating this problem. Herbs and other supplements that support your adrenals are a better answer.” “And you said something about hormones?” “Thyroid hormones (not just T4 but also T3), are necessary to keep your hair in anagen, or the ‘growing phase’, as well as to keep its coloring [8]. Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey. Your TSH might be normal, but you tested positive for Reverse T3 and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, both of which cause thyroid hormone resistance [9].” Over the next 40 minutes, I went over the rest of Marisa’s labs and the game plan to regrow her hair and rejuvenate her body. “You’ll first notice less shedding, but since hair grows only at a rate of one-half inch per month, it might take a year and a half to regain the length you used to have [10].” Six months later, Marisa gave me an update. “Dr. Woliner, my hairdresser thinks St. Agnes answered my prayers, but between you and me, I think you had something to do with it too.”
“
Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey.

special feature ║ CONGRESS Ave.
Delray’s Next Great Street By LINDA BROWN
{
Congress Avenue in Delray Beach can be a pretty dismal place.
There’s nothing aesthetically pleasing about the 4.1 mile corridor which connects to a vibrant corporate corridor in Boca and a popular shopping and dining district in neighboring Boynton Beach. Even though the corridor makes up a large portion of Delray’s 16 square miles, Congress Avenue underperforms in terms of tax revenue, economic activity and buzz, especially when measured against the city’s hopping downtown. And yet the Congress Avenue corridor has tantalizing possibilities. As far back as 2005, city officials have seen enormous untapped potential along Congress Avenue. A decade ago, when Delray’s largest private sector employer Office Depot announced it was vacating its world headquarters on 40 plus acres along Congress Avenue, then mayor Jeff Perlman thought it made sense to reimagine and rezone the land, an effort that later expanded to a significant chunk of the corridor. What resulted was a vision to allow a mix of uses ranging from office and retail to entertainment and residential along the corridor. The goal was also to turn the corridor into a transit oriented development taking advantage of a nearby Tri Rail station and a new trolley service that could ferry workers and residents downtown. The vision also called for beautifying the corridor which pales in comparison to Congress Avenue in Boca. But a decade later, thanks to recession and other priorities, little has changed. But now an effort spearheaded by the current city commission and led by a task force chaired by Perlman is resurrecting
84 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
the vision, adding to it and fine tuning policies and zoning to meet current and future needs. “We are studying and planning to suggest and hopefully implement some really cutting edge ideas in planning and place making,” says Perlman. “The talent on the task force is formidable and impressive and they are digging in and making incredible suggestions. The volunteers that have come forward to work on this project are great minds and as a result we are going to reinvent this corridor so that it becomes Delray’s next great place and business opportunity.” From engineers and planners to real estate professionals and property owners the task force consists of an impressive array of professionals and concerned residents. Economic Development Director Joan Goodrich is the staffer spearheading the effort. She sees enormous potential on the corridor in terms of jobs, tax base, activities and housing opportunities. She also sees the possibility of linking Congress to the downtown. “The vision is exciting and so is the potential,” she said.
Chamber of Commerce President Karen Granger said Congress already has a range of interesting businesses and that when the area is improved the story will be a compelling one. Mark Corlew and Anuj Grover are two examples of entrepreneurs who have invested heavily by purchasing and successfully leasing the 200,000 square foot Arbors buildings. They see a big future for Congress and feel it’s critical to link with the success of Atlantic Avenue. A smaller but important effort is taking place at the Delray Tech Space run by Mark Laymon who offers co working for what he says is a growing tech community. In addition to growing the job count on the corridor a task force led by Jim Chard, Jim Smith and Shirl Fields is working on aesthetics and place making. They are advocating for mobility, fewer lanes and slower speeds. They are also pushing open space and green elements. The final report is due by year’s end. If successful,says Perlman. “Congress Avenue will be Delray’s next great street. We did it downtown. We can do it here as well. We know how to do this.”

ROB STEELE A Man Of The People By Diane Feen
{
Photos by melissa korman
When you step into a space once occupied by Joe Gillie you have pretty big shoes to fill. But if anyone is up to the task its Rob Steele.
Steele is an eternal optimist with the right amount of passion and compassion to lift a submarine out of muddy water. He also has a work history as diverse as a tapestry quilt and an open heart unusual for anyone over 21. But as eclectic as this former banker is, he’s equally as competent. As the Executive Director of the Williamsport Community Arts Center he restored a 2,200 seat theater to its luster, doubled ticket sales and raised over $1.5 million. When he got to Williamsport, his goal was to get the seats filled. So he did what someone would do on an important mission – he went into the community and talked to people. In an era when most things are digitized, sanitized and equalized, Steele went where most people don’t go – into the streets. “I always talk to people and find out what they want. If you listen, they will tell you. We created each season based on passions, budgets, the calendar, and whims of people in our community,” said Steele, the new president and CEO of Delray Beach Center for the Arts. When you meet Steele there’s a lot to take in. The compassionate over-achiever is common sense based with sensitivity and directness not normally found in business executives. But what makes him such an anomaly is that he has breached stereotypes and leapfrogged into a territory made up of eclectic moving parts that fit together perfectly. “From the banking business I learned about strategic planning and from the restaurant business (yes he left banking and opened an Italian restaurant in Monroe, Michigan) I learned how to treat people and take care of guests. After he left the restaurant business, Steele took a job as Executive Director of a regional theater in Tecumseh, Michigan. How, you ask, does a former banker and restaurateur make the swift turn to the cultural arts? “I have always loved the arts. In high school, college and
November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
adulthood I was an actor, director, set designer and producer of local theater. I just switched my avocation to my vocation.” It’s easy to see how Steele got his musical mojo. His mother Marilyn played the piano and always had music on in the house. She also took her three boys to concerts, ballets and museums. But as important as the arts were to his mother, his engineer father had a part in developing the left side of his son’s brain. “We used to go on family camping trips where we would visit historical Civil War and battlefield sites.” Though Steele has a magnetic personality and an uncanny ability to see the best in people, he is humble to a fault. “My father had limitless integrity and always said, ‘You are no better than the next person,’ and ‘Work as hard as the day is long.’ My father helped a lot of people.” You could say the same thing about Steele (though I tend to disagree with papa Steele when he says his son is no better than the next person). “Rob Steele is an amazingly positive person who has a gift for making everyone feel listened to and included. Rob took an interest in our school’s performances, ultimately changing our stars by bringing us into the theater he directed. He is likeable, community minded and a team player with a deep concern for those he works with. He successfully fulfilled his mission of putting the Community back in the Community Arts Center. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss his wise council and Midwest colloquialism. He’s one of my favorite humans on the planet,” said Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective in Williamsport. Steele has also impacted the lives of young people through the arts. He created a summer stock student theater program in Williamsport and believes that everyone should have access to the arts regardless of

their economic station in life. “I like the theater’s ability to touch people. On opening night I tell our cast, ‘you hold the audiences heart in your hands – it’s a weighty responsibility; take it seriously.’” The same could be said of Steele’s philosophy in life. Though he has an MBA in business and resume with accomplishments like senior executive, strategist, visionary, product analyst and decision maker, he also has an ethereal side grounded in gratefulness, positive thinking, kindness and sensitivity. “I’m a man of the people. I like everyone and look for the good in each one.”
One could say his beliefs are graciously reciprocated by those who know him. “Rob is a shining star and lights up a room. He is always looking for ways to make things happen and bring joy to others. He was such an asset to our theater. He’s extremely competent and elevated our town and brought us to a new level of the arts,” said Judith Olinsky, VP of Lycoming Arts Alliance. Steele’s competence is what won over the committee looking for a new CEO for the DBCFA. Steele was chosen over 100 other potential candidates in the national search for a new CEO.
Though he is a man of the people Steele has been married to Marianna for 34 years and has two accomplished daughters - Kyle and Laurel. At his Williamsport home they had an organic garden and four chickens (called Hog Warts Hens) that provided them with free-range eggs. Steele is also an accomplished chef, water sportsman, traveler and cultural arts junkie. “Making things better is what drives me. It’s not about money or recognition; it’s about the enjoyment of a job well done.” If you’re wondering if this man is for real – the answer is yes.

Just Like Mom Used To Make
ELLIE’S 50’S DINER By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman
{
If you’re nostalgic for the good old days – and like homemade comfort food – then there’s an oasis to your barren culinary landscape.
Bob & Ellie in front of Ellie’s 50s Diner celebrating 25 years 106 November 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Called Ellie’s 50’s Diner this hometown restaurant has taken the home and added it to their cooking repertoire. But this is no flash in the pan – they’ve been delighting diners for the past 25 years. Whether you want breakfast, lunch or dinner there’s a full menu to please your palette. “You can eat here for 30 days in a row and not eat the same thing twice,” said owner Bob Smela, who opened a Deli on George Bush Blvd. 25 years ago, and is now co-owner of Ellie’s 50’s Diner with his wife of 42 years, Ellie. A lot has happened in their 25 years of cooking, catering and cavorting with hungry patrons. “In 1982 we started Ellie’s Deli doing take-out salads, sandwiches and meats. Then we added three lunch trucks that went around town selling food at different locations. After eight years we decided to go North and open Ellie’s 50’s Diner on Federal Hwy,” said Bob, who enjoys adding perfection to his menu at a moment’s notice.
All the fanfare at this precious piece of retro history is well deserved (and preserved). There are large booths, a black and white linoleum floor, pink walls, a jute box, vintage cars and pictures of Elvis, Marilyn and James Dean sprinkled everywhere. A statue of Marilyn stands tall with her skirt flying upward and a white bedazzled Elvis jumpsuit hangs in front ready for action. It takes a lot to transform the present to the past – especially if it’s 2015 and we’re immersed in an age of intergalactic travel and bytes not bites. But that hasn’t deterred locals and tourists from frequenting their favorite diner. “I eat at Ellie’s at least four times a week, sometimes twice a day. The people are friendly and the food is good,” said Sara Halpert, who thinks the burgers at Ellie’s should be in the Hall of Fame. Halbert isn’t the only one to swoons over the fresh cooking and friendly down home service. “We come here for breakfast, lunch or dinner at least three times a week,” said Joe and Toni Mas-

trullo. “We like the servers, the food (especially the fresh turkey, burgers and old-fashioned grilled cheese with ham, cheese and tomatoes) and we feel at home here.” The Mastrullo’s, who know Ellie and Bob from St. Vincent’s Church, rent out the Flamingo Ballroom in back of the restaurant for private parties. They’re also having Ellie and Bob cater an event for them at the train station this month. There’s a reason why many of their customers are smitten with this family oriented restaurant. Their food is made fresh on the premises and served in its natural state. The turkey breasts are slow cooked all night and bones are added (to the natural juice) to make gravy. Add that to their fresh Yukon mashed potatoes and homemade stuffing and you have Thanksgiving every day. Although Yukon’s are not on the menu daily, Bob is always on the lookout for special foods to excite guests. They’re also known for their fresh half baked chicken (the Wednesday special) served with potato, vegetable and soup. Friday to Sunday you can get a juicy Prime Rib dinner and Monday is Pot Roast day. Every day of the week you can order the best baby back ribs on the planet. Served in a wickedly wonderful sauce
they’re tender and meaty and may have you licking your fingers. Another spectacular dish is the homemade meatloaf with gravy and mushrooms, green pepper and onions. The Chicken Quesadilla’s are also a special treat with grilled or blackened chicken, cheddar cheese and mushrooms. There are a lot of wonderful dishes to choose from – such as the Brutus sandwich with turkey, ham, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing – and the Patti Melt (burger) grilled with onion and cheese on rye. There are Pita sandwiches on the lunch menu (Cheezy turkey, Veggie, Chicken or Tuna Melt) as well Salads, homemade Soups, Sirloin burgers and hoagies. The Breakfast menu is equally as vast with eggs and omelets, pancakes, waffles, French toast, Idaho French fries, Canadian bacon and mouth watering specialty dishes. If you ask Ernest Simon, who was born in Delray Beach, what draws him to Ellie’s every week he’ll tell you. “I come here every Sunday with my family because the food is great, the staff are friendly and we love Bob and Ellie,” said Simon, whose grandfather moved to Delray in 1912. Loyal fans flock to Ellie’s 50’s Diner as if it were a family ritual. They love the fresh milkshakes, wonderful pies, homemade food and

slice of Americana history. “Ellie’s has always been about family. We get choked up thinking about the number of people (staff and guests) the restaurant has touched over the years. Bob and I are so thankful for our loyal guests and continued support from the community,” said Ellie, whose blue eyes and kind heart could melt an Eskimo. They also cater (and coordinate) wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, engagement parties, company picnics, grand openings, fundraisers, birthday and holiday parties, festivals, school and church functions. You can also rent out The Marilyn Room or the Flamingo Ballroom. There’s an Elvis Impersonator, The Doo-Wop Kid and other great entertainers. “It’s our 25th anniversary and we would like to say ‘Thank You’ from the bottom of our hearts. Without you none of this would have been possible. We are delighted that some of our customers come to eat here right from the airport.” Ellie’s 50’s Diner 2410 North Federal Hwy. Dough: Combine all ingredients and knead dough until it easily forms a ball. Set aside and cover to let rise until dough doubles in size. Pre heat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a 9 inch deep round baking dish (a pie pan works well) with non-stick cooing spray. Roll out the dough and lay in the dish, trim off excess dough and save. Spoon filling into pan. Cut leftover dough into strips and lay across top of dish in a lattice pattern. Brush top with egg wash. Bake at 400 degrees for about an hour, checking frequently, until golden brown. Insert toothpick to check center of pie. If toothpick comes out clean, pie is done. Let cool for about 2 hours. Cut and serve.

Who Is In Charge of Your Pet’s Health?
W
e are often challenged on the care and health of your pets in looking for solutions for everything from daily events to serious disease and injury. We spend a tremendous amount of our time researching and learning about your pet’s challenges as well as explaining it in detail in ways that we hope you truly understand. Many that know us understand our passion for problem solving without an end result of just a quick, temporary fix. It is for this that I have these questions for you. Recently I spent a great deal of time with a new client whose pet had a fairly serious health issue. The client was referred by her friend because her pet was getting worse and she was running out of money to pay for the veterinarian. After explaining the how’s and why’s, they purchased a minimal amount of products for our recommendation. A week later the client revisited us wanting to return the items because “her veterinarian had forbidden her to use them.” The recommendation and its products were not medicines, they were proposed to enhance the body’s ability to heal and improve its’ immune system. I reiterated our initial conversation of which she said she still believed, however she expressed that she couldn’t do anything other than what her veterinarian said.
My question is this: who does the pet belong to? You are its’ owner and you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of that pet. Your veterinarian is a service provider that YOU pay for. You deserve the utmost value and expertise. Who knows the most about your pet? It is YOU! You spend your life with your pet whereas the average time your pet spends with the vet at the clinic averages around ten minutes per visit. If you do semi-annual visits, total time is only twenty minutes per year. The point here is that you are the primary health and welfare provider for all your pets. YOU have the responsibility to gain the knowledge and expertise about your animals. YOU should seek the wisdom that your pets deserve. Information is easily available today with computers and the internet, however beware that you are getting the true information. Clients are often impressed how we find so much truth in a short period of time. It’s simple. Discovering the truth is in the way you ask the question. For example, if I search for the best pet food, I’ll get millions of hits with advertising for every food out there with all the marketing that goes with it. If, however I ask for the species appropriate diet for a natural canine or feline, the results will be quite differ-
ent. Same is true if I type in a drug name or I specify side effects of the drug. If I’m looking for an herbal or natural CURE for a challenge, I need to be specific. In your quest for a healthier pet, do not hesitate to ask the specific questions that you need to know and then verify. Regarding the case I cited at the beginning of this article, if the client did their homework and then asked their veterinarian the specific question as to why-maybe they would have realized this was inappropriate advice from a professional. These types of incidents need to be addressed with the professional boards involved in pet care and in the cases of medicine and drugs by both the manufacturer and the FDA. Remember, you are paying the bill and you are legally responsible. We all love our furry babies and they reward us with their unconditional devotion and love. Let’s make sure that we are giving them the best care that they deserve. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe.com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at Fiesta Pet Deli or www.PetHealthCafe.com , 954-472-1404.

ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card
Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. He Said/She Said:
First Date Do’s and Don’ts By Robert V and Marie T
S
o you set up your first date with someone who could turn out to be special (or not). Here are a few do’s and don’ts that will help guide you to success.
He Said:
1. DO NOT go to a club. There are just too many distractions. Loud music, a plethora of other, pretty, shiny things to look at (you know what I mean) and alcohol in abundance. There is no way to win in this scenario. Remember, we are trying to make a good impression. Meeting in a club is like meeting a wolf in a butcher shop. You are the wolf, by the way. 2. DO NOT ask if she “is going to eat that” at dinner. The point where you can reach over and take the uneaten food off of her plate, comes at exactly five months in a relationship and only IF you have met her parents. If you have not met her parents, the time is seven months. 3. DO NOT text or call during your date. You may be tempted to check your phone when she excuses herself to go to the bathroom. This is a trap! She is watching to see if you are communicating with _______ (her imagination will fill in this blank and it will never be good for you). 4. Bonus DO NOT. Do NOT mention your Ex in any context. I don’t care if you find out that your date and Ex share friends, blood type, yoga instructors, or therapists. There is only her in your life right at this moment and no one else exists for the next hour and a half. Now the Do’s 1. DO listen, or at least pretend to while nodding every once in a while. Every thirteen seconds seems to be the sweet spot. Ask her about herself and seem riveted, hanging on her every word. Listen to at least every fifth word and be prepared to regurgitate them back to her disguised as new questions. 2. DO pick up the check. Get used to it. Even if she insists, you will have none of that. You are the hunter and gatherer and by gosh, you are going to hunt the check down and gather the funds to pay it. Also, be sure to tip at least 20%. They look for signs of cheapness, don’t give them ammunition. 3. DO love children (even if neither of you have any), animals, romantic walks on the

beach, Oprah and Dr. Oz. You, my friend are a catch if you can reference all of these things in your conversation. Do NOT try to shoe-horn them into the same sentence. 4. Bonus DO. DO set a time limit for your first date. It eases any apprehension you may have going in trying to figure out how to fake a text informing you that you have to conduct emergency brain surgery. It also adds a little intrigue to the date and excitement when things are going well. That’s it, guys. You now have all the information you need to make magic on your first encounter. After that, you’re on your own (unless we tackle that next month). Feel free to send all success stories to the editor. One more thing. DO NOT read the “She” portion of this article. Women are much smarter than us. Yes, I said it. Everything “She” writes is meant as subterfuge to the pearls of wisdom I imparted above.
She Said:
I can’t stop laughing at HE... Do’s: A. Agree to meet at a public place, preferably during the early evening hours (or earlier), set up an exit strategy and make sure someone (anyone!) knows where you are and what
you’re doing! Actually, check in on FB! There are lots of crazies out there! B. Ask a few “dealbreaker” questions discreetly. Last thing you want to find out on a 5th date is that he’s in recovery for a foot fetish addiction (unless this means he will buy you shoes!), has an incurable skin rash and mental illness runs in his family. C. Offer to split the check, or leave the tip. And do not be offended if he takes you up on it! It’s only ammo for the future, if you continue to date! LOL! Do Nots: A. Do Not: Talk about your Ex. Any EX! Ex-husband, boyfriend, pet, etc. Surely you wouldn’t want to hear about his on your first date, right? And if he asks, keep the answers short. You will seem one (or worse, all three) of these things: bitter, heartless or still hung up! B. Do Not: Have more than 1 drink! You need your wits about you to see if you’d like to have a second date. We all know the affects of “beer goggles”. C. Do Not: Go on your first date with unrealistic expectations! Just have a positive attitude and see how it goes. If you go in with realistic expectations, your chances of having a nice date just multiplied exponentially. If the date doesn’t go well, then it’s no big deal. Ugh.

Every now and again in this world you run into a larger than life figure
{
Someone whose spirit lights up the room and whose humor, intelligence and warmth make you feel like you’ve known him forever.
Bill Fay is that kind of guy. In fact, he’s the epitome of that kind of man. Bill is the longtime principal of Banyan Creek Elementary School in Delray Beach. After more than a half century in education he retired this month. There were tears when he announced his intentions and laughter too. Bill is an institution, an original. He has left two generations of kids, teachers and friends richer for having known him. Bill has earned a lifetime of accolades and hopefully decades to enjoy his family and friends. While we share a birthday, I always liked to remind him that he was much much older than I was and a Red Sox fan to boot. But somehow that didn’t get in the way of our friendship. His love of children and of Delray Beach was infectious and I enjoyed every moment I spent with Mr. Fay. His aspirations for his students and his teachers were nothing short of creating the warmest, best learning environment possible so that kids could thrive. And they did. There will be many more principals who serve Banyan Creek in the years and decades to come. But Bill Fay will never be replaced. Nor will be forgotten. The great ones never are and Bill Fay is a great one. He came to Banyan Creek after a long and distinguished career in Massachusetts. Some may have approached the job as a victory lap, a chance to stay busy

and collect a paycheck after a long career in education. But Bill approached the position with energy, passion and a strong desire to educate children, mentor young teachers and make veteran teachers even better. He wanted Banyan Creek to be a great school, a safe place that would nurture children and build community. And that’s what it became. When I started The Education Times newspaper many years ago, one of the first things I learned is that you could tell whether a school had a great principal the moment you stepped into the school. If the school was orderly, clean, bright, had art on the walls and smiling well behaved kids you knew they had a great principal. When you visit Banyan Creek as I did often over the years you could feel the energy, friendliness and love that is Bill Fay’s essence. His teachers were focused. His parents were–mostly–happy (there are always a few). And the place crackled with laughter and encouragement. Bill Fay was the orchestra leader and set the tone. The culture of that school reflected his magnetic personality and his drive. Bill is an opinionated guy. That’s what happens when you care and you’ve been around long enough to see some genuinely ridiculous things. He did not suffer fools gladly and while he had respect for hierarchy he did not have much patience for BS especially if the nonsense got in
the way of educating his kids. He had some amazing teachers over the years and he sang their praises. That’s what great leaders do. They give credit to others and they are focused on the mission. Bill wasn’t just content to build a great school at Banyan he was a champion of other schools in Delray Beach. He was a touchstone for other principals, a leader among leaders and was deeply involved in the city’s efforts to improve its schools. He had relationships everywhere from School Board members to mayors and commissioners. From district officials to city officials, everyone knew and respected Bill’s knowledge of what was best for kids. We joked about our affinities. He liked the Red Sox and Patriots, I followed the Yankees and Giants. I appreciated his sense of humor but also his deep knowledge of how the system worked or in many cases didn’t. He’s been a resource for all who preceded me and all who followed. Here’s hoping he enjoys his retirement. And maybe, just maybe he will weigh in now and again because Bill Fay is one of a kind and we need these guys now more than ever.
