ure, we don’t enjoy the spectacular fall foliage season, but we get to trick or treat in shorts and while our friends in most of America prep for winter, we are looking forward to the best weather there is anywhere on the planet. This is the time of year when we remember why we live here in the first place, cool evening breezes, pleasant mornings and a whole lot going on around town. We get you going with our tips for fall, from music and outdoor concerts to culture and festivals, it’s all happening right here in Delray Beach. As a recovering newspaper journalist, I am still in touch with lots of people from my days in the newsroom. It seems like a lifetime ago and in many ways it is. Newspapers-sadly in my opinion—have really suffered during the Internet age when we check Twitter and our Facebook news feeds to find out what’s going on in the world. But happily, the Internet has not quite stamped out the local publication and that’s a very good thing. Atlantic Avenue Magazine thrives because we deliver what the Internet can’t—community, local names, local faces, local opinion, local happenings. We are at our heart—a water cooler a place where the community can gather at the beginning of the month to see what’s what. I am so grateful for our readers and advertisers who make this magazine possible. I am also grateful to David and Lisa Mizen (our wonderful publishers) the lovely and talented Yvette Roulette (our associate publisher) and the entire AA magazine team for their dedication, talent and efforts month after month year after year. There’s not a single time that I walk the avenue that I am not stopped by a reader who expresses their appreciation for this magazine. They love the covers, they argue over What R U Wearing, react to a column, take advice from our writers and use the magazine all month long to shop and explore our extraordinary town. We see this magazine as a celebration of Delray, its businesses and its people. Fortunately, for all of us, there is so very much to celebrate. Have a great month, we really appreciate you! Fabulous Fur Baby South Pacific Sunset Cruise
It was a “cruising dog fashion show” aboard The Lady Delray, leaving from downtown Delray Beach. About 25 dogs dressed up in their finest South Pacific costumes hoping to be picked as one of the 6 best dressed dogs. Money was also raised for the Justin Bartlet Animal Rescue of Boynton Beach. The coordinator and manager of DIG Restaurant Laura Souza attended with her Fur Baby Gianna. Delray Yacht Cruises said it’s the first time a dog has taken a cruise. Now they can say lots of dogs have taken a cruise! As one of the judges of the show, I would like to compliment Delray Yacht Cruises for their great service and dinner and for making the cruise most enjoyable.
Alzheimer’s Association Walk To End Alzheimer’s® Helps Reclaim The Future For Millions
8 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting South Florida residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. This memorable event will take place in October and November at three Southeast Florida locations: • Boca Raton Walk to End Alzheimer’s® Saturday, October 11, at the Mizner Park Amphitheater. • West Palm Beach Walk to End Alzheimer’s® Saturday, October 18, at CityPlace. • Treasure Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s® Saturday, October 25, at the Mansion at Tuckahoe located in River Side Park. • Broward Walk to End Alzheimer’s® Saturday, November 1, at Hollywood North Park. • Miami-Dade Walk to End Alzheimer’s® Saturday, November 8, at Marlins Ballpark.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is more than a walk. It is an experience for over 8,000 plus participants in Southeast Florida who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. “You can make a huge difference by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer’s®,” said CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter, Ann May. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 150,000 residents of South Florida living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research”. In addition to the Walk, participants will enjoy a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050. To start or join a team today, visit the Alzheimer’s Association alz.org/ walk. To learn more about disease and available resources, call the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7, toll-free Helpline at 800-272-3900.

Cal’s supporters include the Home Depot store in Delray Beach; The Lois Pope Life Foundation; The Home Depot Foundation; The Wells Fargo Foundation; Dale Construction; www.flags.com; and athletes from the Boynton Beach High School girls’ basketball team. These generous individuals and companies have donated money, products and talents as well as many volunteer hours! On September 11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance, local veterans groups rallied around Cal to clean up the exterior of his home to get it ready for a fresh coat of paint. On September 20, volunteers from Wells Fargo and Home Depot arrived at 8:00a.m. to complete the transformation of Cal’s home by planting beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs and installed a new irrigation system. Finally, a brand new flagpole, donated by Delray’s www.flag.com, was installed. At 12:30 p.m., Cal’s supporters and friends honored his service to our country. The Young Marines of the Palm Beaches lead a flag-raising ceremony at the Dever home.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in October for $50 or less.
I
daydream like it’s my job (could you imagine if it was?!) and really enjoy just letting my synapses fire at their own will. I let my thoughts wander freely so often that I could almost be the president and founder of this month’s national holiday. October is Month of Free Thought and if you don’t engage in frequent free thought, you must, because it really is an outlet to the restraints of adulthood. I find it easy to just let my mind take the road less traveled and see where it ends up, but if you need some help, check out Music and Art in the Park on October 14. The Parks and Recreation department is the awesome host of this spectacular event so channel your inner free-thought hippie attitude and jam out during a night of interactive music and hands-on art. Musicians of all ages and levels of expertise are welcome to bring an instrument and join in the kumbaya-style of rhythmic melodies. If you’re feeling artsy fartsy, easels and art supplies will be set up and available to anyone wanting to explore their inner Picasso in a noninstructional Roy G. Biv environment. If you don’t feel like partaking in the action, just sit back, relax and let your mind enjoy the show. The fun-stravaganza is held at the Veteran’s Park Recreation Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is sure to offer a fun time for all, especially because the cost is free, just like your thoughts day of. The Veteran’s Park Recreation Center is located at 50 N.W. First Ave. Please call (561) 243-7350 or visit www. mydelraybeach.com for more information. 24 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
I
get it, I’ve been there. I grew up with four families because my parents divorced and remarried, and this afforded me the opportunity to have twice as much familial love as most people, which included eight grandparents. To date, only one grandparent is alive, and this does prove difficult around the holidays, but instead of being sad, I try to appreciate, remember and rejoice in their lives. October is Positive Attitude Month and is a perfect time to think positively about what has happened, what is happening, and what has yet to happen. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens pulls out the complete-deal strings yet again and offers us a Lantern Festival in the Spirit of Obon on October 18. Inspired by Obon, Japan’s traditional three-day holiday honoring ancestors and thanking them for the quality of life enjoyed by the living, this Festival is jam packed into one fun-filled evening with taiko drumming, traditional Japanese folk dancing, ghost stories, and a street fair with games and shop stalls. The highlight of the evening transforms Morikami Pond into a sea of lanterns that, in accordance with Japanese custom, guide the departure of ancestors’ souls who have come for a brief visit among the living. Top that off with a special fireworks display and you’ve got yourself a magical evening that would make the g-rents smile. The Festival is held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and tickets are $10 for children and $15 for adults, with an additional $11 for the lantern floating ceremony. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road. Please call (561) 495-0233 or visit www.morikami.org for more information.

asically, Halloween wouldn’t be complete without fear. Fear of who’s lurking around the street corner, fear of the dead or undead and fear of the awful sounds that shriek in the night, which includes the Ithink-it’s-a-bird-but-it-can’t-be hoard of bats. October is Bat Appreciation Month and instead of assuming the upside-down creatures with devilish-looking eyes and painful-looking teeth are out to get us, we should embrace the whole idea of Halloween-induced fear and take it all in, one muah-ah-ah at a time. Thanks to the Arts Garage, this is all made possible a little before Halloween, which should make
your trick-or-treating dungeon and dragons theme even that much more powerful. The Arts Garage proudly presents the second season of its acclaimed Radio Theatre series, Dracula, which is the radio play that brought Orson Welles’s legendary Mercury Theatre to life. The classic tale of the bloodthirsty Count is the ultimate horror story for Halloween, and just imagine listening to the play as it excites not only your senses but also your inner fears. Could Dracula actually be real? (Cue piercing violin cord.) Enjoy scripts adapted from the classic movie as it’s performed live, while performers utilize specially-designed sound effect devices that provide a nostalgic trip to the past with a modern twist. Dracula is held Wednesday, October 22 and Thursday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $15 per person. Don’t forget your garlic! Arts Garage is located at 180 N.E. First St. Please call (561) 450-6357 or visit www.artsgarage.org for more information.

et’s all get emo! October is Emotional Wellness Month and let’s realign our focus on how we can better ourselves from the inside out. It’s admittedly difficult to achieve in the day to day, hustle and bustle we call life, where we are all part of the never ending struggle to get ahead, perform better, make more money, and get the most out of a 24-hour window. But when you focus on this, what else in your life is losing your focus? Chances are, it’s your health and wellbeing, so make your calendars for a sunny Saturday where you’ll learn tips and tricks to better your lifestyle. Spodak Dental Group is hosting a Celebration of Health event on Saturday, October 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the purpose of the event is to offer community members a wealth of information in regard to improving their health, wellness and overall lifestyle. t’s a beautiful and colorful weekend we’ve got on our hands. October is National Arts and Humanities Month and thankfully we have some wise-minded individuals who are interested in not only the art of plants, but also encouraging that love for arts in others. The Delray Beach Historical Society presents their annual Orchids on the Square event that features orchid vendors, potting supplies, dazzling orchid displays, raffle prizes and more. The best part is the drive to continue the arts and humanities in schools, which includes an art exhibit by fifth grade students from Banyan Creek Elementary School. The Delray Beach Orchid Society has been active in the community since 1974 and is dedicated to not only promoting the hobby of orchid growing, but also encouraging and supporting arts in local schools. Orchids on the Square is held Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is only $5 per day or $8 for a weekend pass, which leaves plenty of green for a rainbow of orchids. The event is held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Gymnasium, located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Please call (561) 573-2422 or visit www. delraybeachorchidsocity.com for more information.

y name is Danny Donovan and I am the Founder and Creative Director of Dsquared Media. Web design has been my passion ever since I taught myself to code and design in the late ‘90s. When I began working as a freelance graphic/web designer in 2006, that passion became a career for me. In January 2012, I decided to start my own company and founded Dsquared Media. Later that year, I graduated from Digital Media Arts College with a degree in Fine Arts and a concentration in Advertising. Since then, Dsquared has gone on to offer a diverse portfolio of services, including design, branding, printing, internet marketing, and web development. Websites remain my most important focus, as web presence has become indispensible for every business in this day and age. My work and creative vision have been recognized in four Silver ADDY Awards and the prestigious Gold ADDY Award, as well. With each project, I apply creativity and innovation to create brands that are functional, dynamic, and engaging. Come by for a consultation and find out how I can turn your vision into a reality.

October 3 Oh Boy, David Fincher’s eagerly- anticipated movie version of “Gone Girl” is scheduled for release Friday, October 3. Novelist Gillian Flynn wrote the screenplay herself, and she has gone on record as an admirer of the darkness in Fincher’s (“Social Network”) films. There is plenty of darkness in the story of a seemingly model marriage that goes horribly wrong. Square-jawed Ben Affleck plays magazine writer Nick Dunne and Oxford-educated British actress Rosamund Pike is his fellow journalist wife Amy. When Amy and Nick are out of work in New York City and decided to start anew in rural Missouri, on the eve of the fifth wedding anniversary Amy vanishes. The finger of guilt inevitably begins to point to Nick. Playing key roles are Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry. If you’ve ever felt certain dolls are creepy, you’ll be creeped out for sure by “Annabelle,” which is an origin story of last year’s horror hit “The Conjuring.” Annabelle Wallis (yes, that’s her real name) stars as a young woman who life is upended when she receives the namesake doll as a gift. John R. Leonetti takes over director reigns from James Wan, who serves as producer. “The Good Lie” is the true-life story of “The Lost Boys” of the brutal Sudan civil war that began in 1983 and displaced thousands of children who fled the horrors of war on foot. Reese Witherspoon stars as Carrie Davis, one of the rescue workers who brought 3,600 “Lost Boys” to a new home in America. Philippe Falardeau (“Monsieur Lazhar”) directs. October 10 What happens when a day begins with gum stuck in your hair? Why, you have “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” which is a new Walt Disney kid’s comedy starring Ed Oxenbould as 11-year-old Alexander; Jennifer Garner as his mom; Steve Carell as his dad, Dylan Minnette as his brother and Kerris Dorsey as his sister, all of whom have bad days too. Miguel Arteta directs a script on Judith Viorst’s best-selling (more than 4 million copies) children’s picture book.

There are many kinds of addiction. Sex is one of the more powerful ones. “Addicted” stars Sharon Leal as Zoe Reynard, a mother of three whose husband Jason (Boris Kodjoe) is not enough to satisfy her. Billie Woodruff is the first-time director of a story based on a novel by someone named Zane. Drac is back in “Dracula Untold,” a new horror retelling of the original tale of Prince Vlad in Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic novel. Luke Evans (Bard the Grim in three “Hobbit” films) stars as Prince Vlad Dracula, who risks his soul to save the life of his wife and child from a bloodthirsty Sultan. Sarah Gadon, Zach McGowan, Samantha Banks and Dominic Cooper co-star and Gary Shore directs. Order in the courtroom, here come “The Judge.” Robert Duvall stars as the title character, Judge Joseph Palmer, and Robert Downey, Jr. is his big city lawyer son Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home to defend his dad when he is accused of murder. Lending support are Vincent D’onofrio, Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga and Dax Shepard. David Dobkin (“The Change-Up”) directs. October 17 Who wrote “The Book of Life?” This new computer-animated take on Romeo and Juliet is set against the Mexican Day of the Dead and is written and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. It stars the voices of Channing Tatum, Kate Del Castillo, Danny Trejo, Zoe Saldana, Ron Perlman and Christina Applegate. The title “Fury” says it all. Brad Pitt stars as battle-hardened Sgt. Wardaddy, leader of a deadly mission to command a five-man Sherman tank crew to go behind the lines of Nazi Germany toward the end of World War II to strike a final blow at the enemy. Along for the ride, directed by David Ayer (“End of Watch”) are Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal and Scott Eastwood, son of Clint. Nobody fully understands technology; not the teenagers who use it fluently nor their parents, who fear it. Adam Sandler plays a rare straight dramatic role as Don Truby and Rosemarie DeWitt is his wife in “Men, Women and Children,” adapted
by director Jason Reitman (“Labor Day”) from the novel by Chad Kultgen. High school teens and their parents face the many ways the Internet has changed their relationships, communication, self-image and love lives. The cast includes Ansel Elgort, Judy Greer, Jennifer Garner, Kaitlyn Dever, J.K. Simmons, Olivia Crocicchia and Elena Kampouris.
October 24 Though invented back in 1890, the Ouija board never seems to go out of style. “Ouija” is a new thriller from director Stiles White (“The Possession”). Olivia Cooke plays a girl who discovers her dead friend had been messing around with an Ouija board. Douglas Smith plays the dead girl’s suspicious boyfriend. Juliet Snowden wrote the original screenplay in collaboration with White.
October 31 They only crawl at night. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a guy desperate for work who joins the shadowy world of Los Angeles crime journalism in “Nightcrawlers,” directed by Dan Gilroy (“The Bourne Legacy”). Rene Russo plays a battlescarred local TV news veteran of crashes, fires, murder and mayhem.

Spinal Stenosis
Effective Non-Surgical Treatment Options By Dr. John Conde
{
Spinal Stenosis is a debilitating orthopedic and neurological disorder which affects primarily the geriatric population. It is characterized by lower back pain that can radiate into the legs and produce subsequent weakness.
Often times the weakness is associated with painful numbness and tingling. A common presentation is a drastic increase in pain when the individual is standing idle, as occurs when cooking or doing the dishes, or with prolonged walking and almost immediate relief when progressing to a sitting position. Spinal stenosis seems to be greatly misunderstood in the general population. It literally means a narrowing of the spinal canal, the bony structure which houses and protects the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. The occlusion of the spinal canal is typically caused by one of four distinct entities; congenitally narrowed canal from birth, tumor, disc herniation, and or arthritis. By far the leading cause is arthritis in which bone spurs and changes in the morphology or shape of the vertebra lead to occlusion. Unfortunately, the primary recommendation for such a presentation as spinal stenosis is surgical intervention. However, non-surgical conservative treatment options have vastly improved over the years and should be a serious initial consideration before any invasive procedures. Infact some of the most decorated orthopedic and neurosurgeons in the world are now 44 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
nipulating the lumbar spine, and applying class IV cold laser therapy. Due to the fact that arthritis cannot be removed by any means, the main objectives of these therapies are to reposition the spinal joints and stretch the lumbar ligaments and tendons so that the canal is physically widened. The amount of widening necessary to produce positive long-lasting change is very minimal and quite attainable. In conjunction with this, cold laser therapy decreases the healing time by increasing the metabolism of the injured cells and by reducing inflammation and spasm. Therapeutic exercises are applied to increase strength in the correct muscle groups so as to reinforce the widening of the canal. Give nontraditional yet effective treatment options a chance prior to any surgical intervention.
having their patients attempt conservative therapies prior to surgery. Revolutionary new treatment options are centered on decompressing the spine utilizing advanced stretching mechanisms, applying flexion based trunk exercises, ma-

Spooky Faces Wanted

By Thomas C. Balshi, MD
Autumn has arrived in Delray Beach, and although we may feel refreshed that cooler air is on the horizon, the long, hot, sunny summer days may have left our skin craving refreshment.
Did you know that the vegetable (arguably a fruit) most symbolic of Fall is also one of the best kept secrets for skin care? Pumpkins signify harvest, holidays and loved ones gathered around the dinner table in celebration. They also conjure visions of Jack-O-Lanterns, scary Halloween faces, and the Mount Vesuvius pimple that may emerge on the chin after over indulging in trick or treat candy. Surprisingly, pumpkins can also be the source of healthy, radiant skin throughout the holiday and winter seasons. That’s right—pumpkin is no longer 46 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
just for pie and carving funny faces from a fruit. It can also be used as a peel leaving the skin feeling wonderful. This amazing face rejuvenating pumpkin peel revitalizes skin because it contains the highest concentration of salicylic acid of any plant, providing potent keratolytic properties (skin smoothing and softening) and pore cleansing action. Additionally, pumpkin boasts more than 100 beneficial components with the highest concentration of vitamins A, C, and beta-carotene found in any fruit or vegetable. Its aroma is divine, elevating
the Balshi MD Med-Spa experience to an ethereal level. The perfecting pumpkin peel has simultaneous actions: it exfoliates and detoxifies as it draws impurities out of the skin while introducing vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients into the skin. It is an excellent treatment for those seeking new radiance for the holidays, as it stimulates circulation, promotes an antioxidant healing process and provides vitamin nutrition at the cellular level. The perfecting pumpkin peel will even out discolorations (melasma) of the skin and lighten age spots; it will shrink pore size and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike more harsh chemical peels, there is no downtime with the pumpkin peel. Lisa will ensure that skin will be glowing with a healthy radiance from the moment each dreamy experience concludes. Ahhh Pumpkin! It’s more than a decorative Halloween tradition or a seasonal pie filling. It is one of the most nutritional sources of skin healing vitamins and minerals ever combined in a luxurious dermatologic spa facial. At any age, don’t we all need a “treat” in the season of pumpkins and goblins? The skin perfecting pumpkin peel will bewitch your skin and leave it with a mischievous, enchanting glow. Dr. Thomas C. The Consciousness of a Pimple
{
By Kristin Heather
The consciousness of a pimple exists (or doesn’t exist) in how one decides to perceive it, as well as treat it. A pimple is completely unconscious when it is covered up.
When a pimple is concealed, or dried up with chemicals, or ignored, so are the emotions associated with it. And, when you have acne, there are absolutely emotions involved: shame, embarrassment, self-hatred, fear to be seen, frustration, and the negative list goes on. Yet, when one has the courage to look at these emotions, acne becomes a blessing. The first step in tapping into the consciousness of acne is realizing that there is no such thing as a quick fix. That type of skin care may relieve acne for a time, but it also denies the emotions that are causing the breakouts. It is numbing the skin into submission and numbing your emotions. Let’s pick fear to be seen as an example. It may be obvious on the surface level: “I fear to be seen with a face full of zits.” But, looking a bit deeper… is fear possibly an emotion that you have felt, and have been holding onto since before your skin has brought it up? The answer is almost always “Yes.” I can reveal this concept through the story of beautiful woman I know (Vanessa) who has been struggling with acne for years until recently, when the struggle has become something different. Although breakouts still occur, a commitment to delve into discovering their root has opened the deep healing process. Vanessa’s new perspective began when she accepted that there is no such thing as a quick fix. “I was not trusting my own instincts and really hard on myself for my decisions.” She saw four different dermatologists throughout her acne fighting years, and her skin was itchy, red, and peeling from all of the creams and treatments. “I never understood why doctors would tell me that what I eat does not 48 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
matter, but that I need to drink a lot of water; how would one affect my skin and not the other?” When she started to listen to herself, she realized what did affect her skin. “The more emotional I was, the worse my skin got.” The history of her skin and her emotions became woven together. Ups and downs in her personal life mimicked the ups and downs in the state of her skin. “I acknowledged that I was numbing my feelings and numbing my skin.” Unveiling feelings about work, relationships, and her past, Vanessa is able, through awareness and courage, to release. “I even question wearing make-up now because I feel like it is another instance where I am not being true to myself.” When I asked Vanessa to talk about a recent and powerful realization, she truly inspired me. She realized that negative feelings are taking up space. When she is feeling insecurity, for example, she is missing out on something more positive. By holding onto a story of insecurity, she is really sacrificing space. Having the courage to let your skin be, and treat it knowing that its perfect clarity will not happen tomorrow, but will be the result of some authentic self-work is the ultimate way to get to the root of not only your skin issues, but also of your unexpressed emotions: those hindrances that are completely holding you back in life, just like you think your acne is. They are one in the same. The body, mind, and spirit connection is so real. And, maybe it doesn’t show up in the skin for everyone. Maybe it is through weight, or another health issue. Whatever it is, there is power in fostering the true connection to your body so that you can heal and evolve.

Brush for Health, Brush for Life
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
For every $1 you spend on your dental health, you will save $20 on your medical expenses.
Overview You might think that brushing twice a day isn’t necessary because your teeth don’t hurt or because they appear white and strong. Wrong. There is more to your oral health than meets the eye, and if you aren’t maintaining a regular oral health regimen, your entire body is at risk. An estimated 60 million Americans have periodontal disease, which is inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. Over the past decade, an increasing (and alarming) amount of scientific evidence has shown an association between periodontal disease and systemic diseases affecting other areas of the body, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and preterm low birth weight babies. Moreover, the connection between gum disease and heart attacks is higher than the connection between high cholesterol and heart attacks. The Connection Gingivitis (the early stages of periodontal disease) is seen in roughly 97 percent of the population, and is one of the most common diseases to affect humans, even more so than the common cold. Patients with diseased gums release significantly higher levels of bacterial components, such as endotoxins, into
50 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
the bloodstream where they can travel to other organs in the body. The mouth can be a major source of chronic or permanent release of toxic bacterial components in the bloodstream during chewing and swallowing. Those with severe periodontal disease have four times more harmful bacterial products in their blood, meaning there is a higher chance this bacteria will travel to your heart, brain, lungs, etc. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in the United States and accounts for about 40 percent of all deaths
each year. In fact, people with periodontal disease are up to two times more likely to have cardiovascular disease, regardless of other risk factors such as diabetes, smoking or high blood pressure.
When You See Your Dentist Visit your dentist so he/she can diagnose your current oral health and explain the findings clearly, along with any association to long-term mouth and body health. Additionally, some health insurance companies are monitoring members with complex health problems to ensure they’re receiving dental treatments early on, which can reduce medical care costs in the long run. Your dentist is in a great position to help you manage your oral health and, in the process, ensure that oral bacteria and pathogens don’t infiltrate other areas of your body. Make a habit of brushing your teeth twice a day, floss at least once a day, visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and don’t smoke. The goal is to keep yourself happy and healthy, and out of the hospital, and your dentist can help. Mapping Your Fitness Plan
{
By Ashley Sica
When it comes to fitness many people find it very difficult maintain an exercise program. Most people start off with a bang, but soon after quit their exercise routine entirely. Hectic schedules, boredom and not having a “fitness plan” are usually the culprit. Below are some tools to help you plan and stay on your best fitness track.
The first thing to consider when mapping out your fitness plan is to ask yourself, “Do I have a fitness schedule?” If you have a fitness schedule, that’s awesome; if you don’t, now is the time to make one. One of the challenges with not having a fitness schedule is that you have nothing holding you accountable and little to work toward other than a desire to be in better shape. Having a fitness schedule is a must. Decide what times and days work for you and put your allotted time into your daily planner just as you would a work meeting, hair appointment and so on. Make the time (Yes, there is time in the day!), hold yourself accountable, and get to the gym. Next on the list is goal setting, which is one of the most important components when putting together a fitness plan. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. The next step is to decide on your fitness timeline. Whether it is 2 weeks or 2 months having a fitness timeline will help hold you accountable. For example, “I would like to loose 2 pounds in the next two weeks or in 2 months I would 52 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
like to increase my aerobic capacity and drop a pant size.” Be specific about your timeline and try your best not to deviate from it. Last but not least you need an action plan. Before you get to the gym you NEED to have a specific game plan of what you will be working on that day. A lot of people waste time meandering around the gym wondering what they should do next. Decide ahead of time the specific body parts and exercises you will be performing along with the amount of repetitions and sets you plan on doing. Having an appropriate action plan will keep you focused and your time in the gym efficient and quick. If this all sounds foreign to you or you feel like you need a some guidance in getting your fitness plan started then call in the help of a nationally certified personal trainer to get you going and on the right track! Strand Corrected
{
By mark hasche
This month I’d like to address an ever increasing scenario within the salon: Color Correction.
I’ll paint the picture… Client walks in with Angelina Jolie dark brown (level 3) box colored hair. She’s been coloring her hair dark brown for the past 10 years. During the consultation process she hands a picture of Gwen Stefani to the colorist. Here is where it gets hairy (no pun intended). This ultra blonde look, while achievable in a day for some, might require trimesters for others. Patience is the key element to this equation. Hair texture and density, plus your color history, factored in with the current health of your hair will dictate the call to action. There are many paths a colorist can take to get you to that “No Doubt” blonde. Removing pigment from the hair can be done by using color remover. There are many types of color removers on the market. Powder and cream based lighteners being the most commonly used. This lightening process could take a few visits. If your colorist cares about the integrity of your hair they will take the necessary steps and time to make it a healthy transition. Without these measures you could end up with a chemical hair cut. Everyone knows chemical hair cuts aren’t cute!!! A chemical haircut is when a stylist/colorist over processes your hair by using chemicals too harsh for your hair type resulting in breakage. So don’t try this at home, trying to do a DIY color correction could result in something that resembles a spiky haired calico cat. The moral of this story is patience, patience, patience and a trusted colorist. Now hop on our time machine and fast forward to a year from now. The same client wants to go back to her Angelina Jolie dark 54 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
brown hair because her friends think it looks better. While this process can be done most times in one day, it can require follow up visits due to occasional fading which depends on the porosity of said hair. Taking hair from high lift blonde to dark brown requires a few steps. First we have to reintroduce the red, yellow and orange pigments we removed back into the hair. This is commonly known as filling the hair. By replacing these pigments we insure that the end result is rich in tone and not flat or matte. After the hair is filled we can now color it with the desired shade. The end result: that red carpet worthy rich dark brown. Now in both cases the investment you’ve made in your hair can be insured only by using good quality hair care products. It is important to use these products to maintain the po-
rosity of your hair to help safe guard against fading. In the case you do experience fading, a simple in salon gloss can be done to refresh your new color. Tune in next month when this clients friends tell her she needs a pink mohawk. LOL, just kidding! This Divo is dipping out. There are a lot of people who looked up to John Wayne, but few traveled from Albania to see the allure of his homeland.
Gent Kumi might have been the first. Gent was born in Albania and lived there until the late 90’s. But it was John Wayne’s bravado (and his lust for all things American) that pushed Gent to move to the Houston, Texas. Gent did not stay in Texas for too long. Instead he moved to Seattle, Washington in 2000 to start a construction company with his brother Andi. Both brothers were hard workers and believed in the American dream. And guess what? Their dreams came to fruition. For Andi that meant moving back to Albania, but for Gent it was starting Red Brush Painting Company. Though he came to America with just $413 in his pocket
and not a word of English, this six-foot-sixinch fellow overcame each obstacle with the same determination that his idol John Wayne would have. He not only learned English, but he grew his company from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon and then South Florida. Red Brush Painting’s home office is located in Boca Raton, but they now serve Palm Beach County, Broward, Dade, St. Lucie and Martin County. When you ask Gent what the secret to his success is he will tell you honesty. “If you take care of your employees then everything will work out fine. You have to be honest with them and also honest with your

customers. Honesty is most important in any business.” His other mantra is that of customer service, but with a different slant than many companies in his industry. There are no salespeople. Instead the Gent philosophy is one of doer-ship. “We have what is known as Senior Team Leaders. We don’t sell, instead we send out our team leaders to explain how much labor will be involved and what materials are needed for the job and what it will cost.” Gent has another unique philosophy. They offer to buy the paint for customers (as most painters do) or if clients want to buy their own paint they can do so and get the Red Paint discount at Sherwin Williams stores. This approach has worked so well that customers – both residential and commercial – are very satisfied with the results. Just ask Alban Hoti, owner of Hoti Motor Cars in Delray Beach. “We have a 20,000-square-foot dealership and service department. Gent painted the front of the building and the inside. They did a great job and I am very happy with the results. It was done quickly, at a fair price with good quality materials. They are professional and know what they’re doing.” Part of their success has to do experience, the other link to excellence is the longevity of Red Brush employees. Take Aaron Jordan for instance. He owned his own painting company and came to work with Red Brush 14 years ago. Now Jordan is a senior Team Leader with the company. That may be the reason that Red Brush now does commercial work for Chase Bank, Seacoast National Bank, Mussel Beach Restaurant (in Delray Beach), Marni (in Town Center Mall) and a host of private residential clients like Reg of Boca Raton. “I was new
Hoti Motorcars of Delray Beach exterior painted
to the area and interviewed many painting companies. I am so happy I selected Red Brush Painting. They are honest in their estimate and completed an excellent job in a timely manner. I have hired them twice and will continue to recommend them to friends and family!” David K. of Deerfield Beach was equally as enthusiastic about the work done at his house. “Red Brush was very accommodating and eager to please. They negotiated a fair price and started the job when I needed it. The office staff was friendly and quick to respond to my inquiries and the men who came to paint my ceilings were professional and friendly. They were fast, neat, and did great work.”
Making people happy is one of the primary goals in the Kumi playbook. Gent enjoys seeing his customers happy and now goes that extra mile to make sure that families of fallen veterans are taken care of as well. Just recently Gent and his staff painted the house of Lureen Conte for free. Conte’s son Matthew was a navy man who died in Iraq. As a way to help the family Red Brush painted the Conte’s Port St. Lucie home for free. The program, that takes place once a year in each county, is called The Red Brush Project. Next up for the Red Brush Project will be Miami. They will pick a homeowner whose son (or daughter) perished in the war and paint their Miami home for free. This gesture of kindness is an act of compassion and one that is near and dear to Gent’s heart. “America has supported those living in Albania since 1913. I am in America by choice and I feel an obligation to help mothers (and fathers) whose sons or daughters who have sacrificed their lives for all of us.” To Red Brush speed is of the essence. You only need to give them a 24-hour notice to start a job. Not only are their prices reasonable but they have a high standard
of workmanship they adhere to. “We have a good reputation because we do the proper preparation. We do not cut corners and we certainly don’t use water based paint on oil based painted walls that end up peeling. That is unethical and is done a lot to save money for the painter.” If you want to get an estimate to paint your home or business give Red Brush Painting a call. They aim to please and are ready whenever you are! RED BRUSH PAINTING 1420 NW 2nd Avenue – suite 3 Boca Raton, Florida 33432 561- 465- 5177 http://redbrushservices.com

Helping restaurants stay in business through affordable and leased equipment By Nicol jenkins Photos by melissa korman

Your Grandma’s homemade gravy and meatballs may be the key ingredient of opening your restaurant-- but it’s not the only one to keep your business running successfully.

The expense of leasing quality equipment and products to keep your restaurant operating during the breakfast, lunch and dinner rush is vital to keeping the open sign on your doors. of experience, connections and ‘human touch’ to keep your business running for many years to come. Why pay cash for expensive equipment that might break? You can lease to own your own equipment and have maintenance checks with Restaurant Appliance Depot. Over 5,000 new products and equipment on their online mega store, and in addition in their 6,000 square foot Delray
warehouse, you can view dishwashers and ice machines… making them one of the nation’s largest online kitchen equipment supply companies. Extensive warranty and preventive maintenance are included… And their 7-year-long company, Brilliant Supply, is your number one supplier for janitorial

chemicals, supplies and much more. ‘Restaurant Appliance Depot’ specializes in helping start-up and long term businesses with all credit types--- good or bad. Offering lease to own programs up to $100,000 for all brands of equipment and generating approvals in just minutes. Extensive warranties and preventive maintenance, in which quarterly maintenance equipment check ups, are also provided. Their mission is to have the best pricing, best selection and the most economical lease payments to fit all budgets and all equipment needs. “Anything you can think of in the commercial restaurant setting, we can finance and we have relationships with the manufacturing companies. Also, we make sure the equipment is working properly and if it isn’t, we address it immediately before it costs more money,” said Matt. “Before restaurants open their doors, many owners have exhausted all their funds and many don’t know that there are options out there for their equipment needs. They purchase for cash or lease indefinitely, but we offer the option of lease to own and pair people up who can’t go to local banks for their business. Why not have the property belong to you and why throw your money down the drain when you can own it,” added Maria, “If they lease to own, at the end of the contract, they own the equipment in 4 to 5 years and they can have more collateral in their business.” Customer service is their top priority… One of the owners is always available to answer any of your commercial restaurant
equipment leasing questions and more. “We are around every day from 8 am to 9 pm to pick up the phone and talk live with you. We work much longer hours than the competition so we can address any concerns the customer may have anytime of the day or night. Just because it’s 5 o’clock doesn’t mean we are closed, we are here and we intend on answering all your questions and quickly,” said Matt. “We offer the lowest lease pricing for startup businesses to established landmarks. We meet every economical need and provide instant credit approvals so our customers are not waiting weeks, like with banks, to know if they are approved,” said Maria. The local owners are also big into giving
back to their local community of Delray Beach. They support their child’s school, St. Vincent Ferrer School and other local businesses. “We love Delray, we work here and live here and our children go to school here. We support our local businesses. We love to be part of the local community,” said Matt. Their employees and customers are truly family… Building long-lasting relationships with their customers is their number one goal. “We are not about volume but about relationships. We find the loans and pair customers with our counterparts and we also fix the machines. Our biggest sales point is service. We will be there to make sure the products work during your dinner rush!” said Maria, adding, “We treat our employees like family because we love them. Our customer service is top. We treat our employees with respect and that respect trickles down to our customers. Our employees are an extension of us. That human touch is lost in a lot of businesses and can be found here!” “If a lot of start-up businesses didn’t lease their equipment, they wouldn’t be able to open their doors. They may have the best recipes and their Grandma’s meatballs, but some can’t get the loan they need to keep running. That’s where we help them!” said Maria. THE BIG APPLE SHOPPING BAZAAR Where Great Deals Collide With Great Selections By Diane Feen Photos by melissa korman
{
The Big Apple Shopping Bazaar continues to charm shoppers with a large selection of clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, glasses, innovative novelty items and a host of other shops under one roof.
That means you don’t have to brave the weather to shop for things you need for yourself or your loved ones. It’s also a haven for gifts, decorative items, unusual finds and just about anything else you can think of (and some you can’t). Big Apple Shopping Bazaar also recently finished their state-of-the-art renovation that brings the sights and sounds of New York City to South Florida. This new shopping bazaar has the charm of a small village with the grandiosity of a large shopping mall. It has 35,000-square-feet of retail space (with delicious food) and is right near downtown Delray. But don’t go thinking it’s just another South Florida shopping center; this one is more like Manhattan than Miami (sorry Miami). There are New York style 60 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
benches, indoor foliage, wall murals of Manhattan and a skyline that brings to mind the history and heritage of New York City. When you step inside, The Statue of Liberty will greet you and so will over 60 merchants with terrific items for sale. But take note: This soaring landmark of freedom is the original Statue of Liberty from the Superman 11 movie. There are also New York style brick balconies and brownstone facades with street names such as Mulberry Street, Central Park, Canal Street, Broadway and Madison Avenue. In the back of the Big Apple Shopping Bazaar you can relax in their Central Park area. There you will find New York style benches, tall street lights and a New York style Deli. There’s also something new brewing – mall style kiosks. The kiosks are indoors
and outdoors and offer merchants monthto-month leases with no long-term commitments. “We wanted to offer something beside our traditional shops to those just starting out. There is also no security deposit. We are always looking for new merchants, and a kiosk is a great way to start out,” said Alexis Pugliese, General Manager of The Big Apple Shopping Bazaar. This New York style shopping center is also increasing their hours. From November till the end of May they will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5:30 (Sunday 11 to 5). That means an extra day to saunter around Sun Glass Savy, where they sell a line of SGS high grade sunglasses that are lightweight and unbreakable. Their sunglasses are contemporary in style but low in price. After you have taken the glare off
of life you might want to outfit yourself with clothing, scarves or handbags from Purple Jungle Trends. This new retail shop has colorful batik sun dresses, three-way scarves and colorful accessories that tell an upbeat story. Don’t forget to say hello to Ché (she’s delightful). If you want to see life from a new vantage point check out Eyewear Bazaar and meet optician Lou Gross. He can examine your eyes and sell you glasses with glamour and glitz or just the standard fare. They offer huge discounts on designer frames, reading glasses and other accessories. Names like Pucci, Fendi and Ray-Ban are sold in styles that range from cat eye to rimless, wraparound and beyond. Lots of crystal embellished frames as well. One newcomer with great promise is Wally’s Caddy Shack. Wally sells golf clubs, golf balls and golf accessories. He also re-grips and repairs golf clubs and sells hybrid irons, golf shoes and golf bags. Their egg cartons filled with golf balls is a great gift for any golfer. Wally is a great guy, check him out. All that glitters may not be gold, but if you you’re in the market for wonderful jewelry (silver, gold or enameled) check out Moriah Jewelry Designs. They have glorious handmade Israeli designers with star quality and exceptional design. There are colorful enameled chokers, crystal pieces, gold chain sold by the inch, Kabbalah jewelry and wonderful pendants with biblical sayings. Great items to behold. The Milieu Boutique is a woman’s boutique with terrific clothing, handbags and accessories. Their novelty tunics are creative and colorful with fringe, beading, ruffles, batik print and more. You can expect designer quality without the high price tags. Check out their pants that will taper your torso. The Key Kart is another novelty shop that elevates house or car keys to designer status. If you talk to Todd & Scott Bird, co owners of Paver & Marble Specialists (also known as Superior Power Washing Inc) they want their customers to be ‘more than happy’ with the work they do.
Their goal and business motto is; to design with simple clean lines that will make bold statements, and must function for their clients’ daily lives. This motto and passion is exemplified in the outdoor hardscape design work and remodeling they do for swimming pool areas, patios & walkways, driveways, water features and anything else you might consider for the outside of your home or commercial space. Being a family owned company, it allows Todd & Scott to be on all job sites from start to finish. They both say, “We provide our customers with very skilled installation and repair crews. In addition, we complete all projects in a professional and scheduled manner”. The Bird brothers have managed to co own Paver & Marble Specialists for 20 years due to their great communication skills with the client, ensuring that they follow each customer’s vision, making each job unique. Their mantra is “It’s not about getting a lot of work; it’s about doing a great job on each and every project”. However, looking beneath the surface you will see that both Todd and Scott are the product of many years of construction expertise. Their father, Jim Bird has been in the construction business for 40 years, and both sons grew up helping in his business but they both feel that their forte is in outside surfaces and hardscape. They must first understand the client’s needs in order to give each of them something that flows with the landscape of their property. It is something
the brothers are both passionate about. “The key to any project is communication. We make sure that all jobs go smooth from start to finish because of great communication”, they explained. Whether it’s small or a large elaborate job, clients rave about the Bird brothers’ ability to create outdoor masterpieces and also be on time with the schedule. (Something which is rare in their industry!) If you talk to former clients you will hear that Todd & Scott are not just talking about it, they mean it, as explained by Edward Salantrie, a Ft Lauderdale based lawyer; “I recently hired Superior to install a marble pool deck. They had to excavate my existing 800 sq ft concrete deck and extend it to 1,300 sq ft. They also integrated a 75ft retaining wall with a swooping pathway and staircase. In addition, the pool remodel consisted of a new 2ft marble coping around the pool and spa, including new glass pool tile and new Diamond Brite color. This entire project was done within 10 days and transformed my backyard in to a resort setting!! The workmanship and professionalism was remarkable”. Another client, Annemarie Mancini says “I knew from the first visit with Scott that I had made the right choice. He had such enthusiasm and vision for turning an ugly concrete pad into a beautiful brick paved patio. He was in constant communication with me throughout the entire project and the job was started and completed on time, as promised. The crew were professional and took great pride in their work. Thanks to
Pavers & Marble Specialists I have the most beautiful patio area that we can enjoy for years to come”. It is also important to know that they are a fully licensed and insured brick paver company and that they offer a 2 Year Warranty on all services and workmanship. Artober On The Ave Showcases the Arts in Pineapple Grove By Stephen Chrisanthus Photos by Aaron Lurie, VMA Studios
{
It may be just plain October everywhere else – but in Delray Beach it’s “Artober.” face painting
This month the city will be highlighting the arts– from visual arts to performance arts, from musical to literary – with the Oct. 9 Artober On The Ave celebration in the Pineapple Grove Arts District as the centerpiece. “With Artober On The Ave, we’re hoping to highlight Delray Beach’s arts as an event but to also keep it going throughout the month,” says Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, which produces On The Ave. “Pineapple Grove is a great place to enjoy art all year round, and this October we look forward to having people out to enjoy the interactive art activities featured at On The Ave.” Running from 6pm until 10pm the Artober event will include music, activities and opportunities for all ages to show off their artistic talents. There will be, for example, a giant “fridge magnet” board, where visitors will be encouraged to create poetry from hundreds of words that can then be attached to the board. A huge canvas will also be set up along Pineapple Grove Way where visitors will have the chance to show off their creative 64 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
drawing or painting skills. For budding young artists, there will be the Kids Corner, hosted by Avenue Church, where children will have the chance to create sidewalk chalk art, ham it up in a photo booth or have their faces converted into works of art by a team of face painters. The musical arts will also be an important part of the Artober On The Ave with three performances, each representing a different style of music. Throughout the night, the locally bred band, Mylo Ranger, will perform its unique style of funk-infused nostalgic rock with a southern flavor. Listen for outstanding harmonies as the band covers a lot of musical ground. For those who enjoy a little softer sound, Artober will feature Regi and Kimi, a pop acoustic indie-folk duo featuring two women whose music ranges from originals to covers, and includes a variety of pop, hiphop and rock hits. Enjoy a touch of classical music at the Artober On The Ave with the Lynn University Orchestra giving a performance – featuring a surprise element – beginning at 8 p.m. in front of the Paradise Salon on Pineapple Grove Way. Throughout the event, visitors will be able to see artists in action as well as view open-air exhibits. Among those with exhibits will be Miami artists Marcus “Grab” Borges and Louie Diamonds, Fort Lauderdale artist Jason JaFleu and Delray’s BEAT Cup Cafe and RESTA Salon artists. Cars will be transformed in to works of art courtesy of Vista BMW. These “Art Cars” will be on display in Pineapple Grove for the entire month of October. A classic car show will also be part of the festivities on October 9th with cars on the street at Old
mylo ranger
School Square Park and Esplanade Plaza. For those who want to take a break, the Hyatt Place will once again be converting its driveway into the Chill Lounge and the Keurig Truck will also be standing by. Be on the lookout for moveable art as artists from Rainbow Circus create living art displays. The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative will also be promoting other October art events in the Pineapple Grove Art District, including the First Friday Art Walk on October 3, the Artist Alley Open Studios on October 16, and the 20th Annual Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival on October 18 and 19 on Northeast 4th Avenue. “Our Artober On The Ave hopes to bring the community together for an evening of fun and creativity,” says Stephanie Immelman, Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative Executive Director.

Guide to fall By linda brown

It’s Fall in Delray and while the weather is beginning to cool off, the calendar is beginning to heat up. Atlantic Ave Magazine will make it is easier for you to plan your Fall activities with our list of can’t miss events for Fall.
Friday Night Concert Series Continues Delray Center for the Arts’ popular free outdoor concert series resumes in October with a great schedule of music sure to appeal to most musical palates. Two shows in October are can’t miss: Turnstiles a tribute to Long Island’s favorite son Billy Joel and The Long Run, a tribute show to The Eagles, one of the America’s most popular bands. Circle October 10 for “Turnstiles”, the music begins at 7:30 pm at the Outdoor Pavilion.
turnstiles
TURNSTILES is the ultimate Billy Joel tribute band, featuring Tony Monaco on keyboards. Tony was born into a musical family and began his musical journey at the age of 8. While he was fascinated with the piano, the guitar was a more realistic financial option. As a result, Tony studied guitar with his Father, Pat Monaco, and played it as his main instrument until the age of 13, winning both regional and national guitar competitions. Over the years, his love for keyboards was rekindled. He studied piano with many private teachers but credits Dave Frank (a world renowned jazz pianist) for really focusing his efforts. As a result, many of his influenc66 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
es were jazz artists. However, when a close friend suggested he listen to more artists like Billy Joel, he reluctantly did so and to his surprise, he became enamored with the genius of Billy Joel. Monaco is a veteran musician and songwriter who once toured with his own band, the Thrills. The Thrills opened for notable acts including: Foreigner, Quarterflash, Nick Lowe, Juice Newton, and Orleans. In the years following, Tony played with many of Long Island’s top bands and then in 1993, he formed what he believes was one of the first tributes to the piano man, “Stormfront”, which earned him an audition for the traveling production of the Broadway show, “Movin’ Out”. Now residing in South Florida, Tony has decided to once again pay tribute to the music and man that has been such an influence in his musical life. In addition, to the formation of “Turnstiles”, he has been reunited with his lifelong friend and former band mate from Thrills, Dave Fullerton. Dave along with both new and old friends has now joined forces with Tony to bring this band to life for all Billy Joel fans to enjoy. On Oct. 24, also at 7:30 p.m. the concert series will feature a performance by The Long Run. The Long Run boasts some of South Florida’s finest and most respected musicians. The band has reproduced the sound that made the Eagles one of the most successful bands in Rock and Roll history. They capture the energy, melodies and with five voices filling the harmonic vocals, they undoubtedly will please the greatest of any and all Eagles fans. Rain or shine; bring your blankets and chairs, and bring the family... but PLEASE,
no pets or outside food or beverages. Food trucks and cash bar available. Arts Garage Fall Highlights On Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. Delray’s award winning Arts Garage will host a special evening of music spotlighting the sounds of Argentina. Roxana Amed, singer-songwriter, born in Buenos Aires, is recognized by audiences and critics alike as one of the most soulful voices in Argentine music.
roxana amed
This original and independent artist is considered a role model for the younger generation clamoring for new and alternative ways of making music. Critics say she changed the concept of the singer songwriter and expanded the borders of jazz songs in her country. Amed always goes beyond her own limits through her confessional and testimonial lyrics, sustained by her overwhelming musical performances and is destined to represent the best of Argentine music tradition. This is a can’t miss show. Tickets start at $25 visit www.artsgarage. org for tickets and information. On Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. you’ll want to head over to the Arts Garage to see Afinka Funk.
Afinka Funk, an original Afro-Cuban based fusion band, is in the business of making people scream with delight – or at least to move their feet. The group has performed at the Lake Worth Street Festival (2013 and 2014), the Lake Worth Tree Festival, and recently headlined the Jazz on the Palms Concert series. You can find Afinka Funk at their monthly gig at the NYY Lounge at the Coconut Creek Casino. If you like high energy, this is your gig. Morikami Obon Festival
Lantern ceremony
If you have never been to an Obon Festival at the Morikami, make sure you visit this year. It’s a spectacle. Set for Oct. 18, the Obon or Bon Festival allows you to enjoy music, drinks, food and fun in a great park like setting. The highlight of the festival is the Lantern ceremony in which visitors launch lanterns into the lake as a show of respect for departed spirits. Inspired by Obon, Japan’s traditional three-day holiday honoring ancestors and thanking them for the quality of life enjoyed by the living, The Morikami celebrates the Lantern Festival in one evening. Entertainment includes taiko drumming, traditional Japanese folk dancing, ghost stories, and a street fair with games and shop stalls. For more information, visit www.morikami.org/lanternfest.
GreenMarket Launches 19th Season October ends with a new beginning for Delray’s excellent GreenMarket, run by Lori Nolan and the Delray CRA. Dress your child up in classic clothes from head to toe at
Once Upon A Time By nicol jenkins

Once Upon A Time… there were two best friends who had a flair for fashion and a desire to dress their children in classic-style clothing and accessories… But finding that special store that offered such classic, timeless styles proved challenging.
As they continually searched for where to shop for their children, a light bulb went off and thus the quaint and magical children’s boutique, ‘Once Upon A Time’ was born in Delray Beach. Sprinkling fairy dust on the town of Delray, the store’s owners and “fairy godmothers” Melissa DiMisa and Connie Muir have cast a childlike and imaginative story book style on many children and families in the local community. The moment you step into the doors of ‘Once Upon A Time,’ you are transformed to a magical land of children’s characters, traditional clothing, princess dresses, fairy glitter wands, slippers, charm bracelets, pirate games, bows and ties, swimwear, toys galore, and much more. ‘Once Upon A Time’ children’s boutique offers a complete look for your girls, boys and baby with a carefully styled selection of European, American and Australian designer children’s clothing specializing in clothing, toys and gift

items for boys and girls, newborn through size 10. “We want people to feel special when they come and we sell special things that you can’t find anywhere else,” said Connie, “We want our customers to take a little magic out of the store and to keep that magic with their children.” The motto at the local boutique is - not to grow up too soon. It’s truly all about the kids, from the stuffed animals, play toys, games, kitten engraved shirts, jewelry of all kinds, a play area for kids where they can watch their favorite shows, and more. It’s the perfect store for all your child’s needs and gift ideas including birthdays, holidays, baby registry, monogramming, Christening and Communion gowns, and custom flower girl dresses for weddings. They offer free gift wrapping on all items, and they will even deliver to your home. If you need a quick birthday gift, the owners will deliver to you! Their website, http://www.onceuponatimedelray.com, also has a large selection of items that can be shipped directly to your home. “We are mothers, most importantly, and wives, friends, and business owners. We host play dates, pack lunch boxes, play peek-a-boo, read sto-

ries, and shop (mostly for our kids). We personally choose the pieces for our store and are devoted to bringing you imaginative, wearable clothing which embraces the innocence and fun of childhood,” said Melissa, “We try to find unique, classic, innocent looking clothing, not mature bedazzled items that can be found everywhere else.” Some of the hand selected items and clothing include top of the line brands from the USA and Europe such as Rachel Riley clothing-- which is worn by Prince George, in addition to Lili Gaufrette from Paris, kissy kissy, Andy & Evan and other designer names. Plus, there’s always something new to discover since new items and clothes are offered at the store every day. “In Delray Beach, there are a lot of families here and no children’s shopping boutiques in the area; you have to go to the Boca Mall or Boynton Beach Mall. At Once Upon A Time, we are focused solely on the children; and we hand select the brands that are classic and traditional, many of which you can’t find anywhere in the states,” said Melissa. The owners also make the shopping day a fun experience for the entire family. Kids movies play on a TV, allowing children to watch their favorite movie or show while moms shop. Pregnant women come in and get excited about their new baby by shopping away! The entire family also looks forward to their monthly themed events hosted by the store with characters from your favorite Disney movies, such as the recent ‘Frozen’ party where the characters read a book and sang songs and pictures were taken. Children get to live in their fairytale character’s story for the day and sometimes even dress up like them! Mermaid tales are a big seller at those special events. Personalized attention and customer service are Melissa’s and Connie’s top priority. On any given day, you can find both or either owner at the store helping a customer find that perfect outfit for their special day or helping a busy mom pick out just the right gift for a birthday party. “We get excited about this, from finding the dresses to a little girl trying on a dress and thinking she’s a princess, and helping a pregnant woman when she comes in. We have big kids, babies, moms, grandmas and others shop in the store and it is our privilege and great joy to help them,” said Melissa. ‘Once Upon A Time’ is truly a magical place for children of all ages and moms alike, many have tried on beautiful clothes… … And they lived happily ever after. A Corporate Lawyer Creates a New Life as Novelist By Skip Sheffield
{
Vincent Sacher isn’t the first lawyer-turned novelist. John Grisham springs immediately to mind.
Sacher will visit Delray Beach for the first time to promote his second novel, “Nowhere Out,” at 7 p.m. Friday, October 24 at Murder on the Beach. Sacher is not a Perry Mason-style trial lawyer, but a corporate lawyer charged with keeping companies on the up-andup. It’s a good living, but Sacher, 66, wanted something more out of life; nothing short of a re-invention. “I live by the philosophy I call Yborn,” he explains. “I was inspired by Mark Twain’s famous quote, `The two greatest days in a person’s life are the day they are born and the day they find out why.’”
Vincent Sacher with his wife Gwen 74 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
The why in Sacher’s case was to one day explore his purely creative side. He had always wanted to write, but like so many people, life got in the way. Upon a move to Florida in 2005 with his three children grown, Sacher felt it was now or never. “I had the seed of a thought. What if a man, talented, dangerous but good, began doing things outside the law?” he relates. “Kent Taylor is an idealized version of someone- not necessarily me- a patriot who starts doing things that are unlawful for the better good.” Kent Taylor, former Navy SEAL-turned “ghost assassin,” is the hero of “The No-
where Man,” Sacher’s first novel. “Nowhere Out” is a sequel, but it can stand on its own. Taylor has been living quietly for five years under the alias Ron Woodruff. Then the murders begin and Taylor feels obligated to do something. Complications ensue when Taylor begins to fall for a pretty neighbor and the string of powerful, corrupt government officials being assassinated seem to implicate the same man who was dubbed the “Ghost Assassin” by the FBI when he went on a rampage nearly 14 years ago. “No one is going to make a whole lot of money painting or writing poetry, so people never do it,” Sacher muses. “I’m writing now, and wow, I love this. I’ve already completed a third Kent Taylor novel. Like him, I am creating a new life.” Admission is free. Call Murder on the Beach at 561-279-7790.

A Lifetime of Achievement: Tom Lynch’s Lasting Legacy By Jeff Perlman
{
A few weeks ago, I got a call from Tom Lynch’s assistant Paula Post asking if I would be interested in being part of a tribute video for Tom being produced on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber is honoring Tom this month with a much deserved “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the Red Pepper Group was tasked with recording a video that would try and capture Tom’s influence and contributions to Delray Beach. I was honored and jumped at the chance to join Tom’s sons Brendan and Connor and Business Development Board CEO Kelly Smallridge on the video. But then panic set in. How can you sum up, in two minutes or less, Tom’s profound influence on the development and creation of modern Delray Beach? After all, if not for Tom, I’m not so sure you’d be reading this magazine, because Atlantic Avenue and Delray Beach was a far different place when he became the founding chair of the CRA in 1985 and mayor of Delray in 1990. Sure, there are many authors to the Delray success story, people we have chronicled on these pages over the years who have done great things in areas ranging from the arts and business to government and philanthropy, but few who have left his lasting imprint. Real Leadership Lasts The real question then was why? Why was Tom Lynch--who served as mayor for three terms then went on to the School Board for 8 years before becoming mayor of the tiny Village of Golf --so important to modern Delray? After all, he has been gone from office for 18 years, a lifetime in local politics and 76 October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
yet, smart politicians, entrepreneurs, economic development experts and others still seek him out for advice even if they have to search for him in Biltmore Forest N.C., where he spends a lot of time these days. The answer, in my opinion, was because Tom stood for and implemented ideas and principles that set the stage for much of the success that Delray has achieved since he served on Mayor Doak Campbell’s Atlantic Avenue Task Force 30 years ago. Sure he accomplished a lot of concrete things during his active years in Delray Beach. Among them: • Successful implementation of the pivotal Decade of Excellence Bond which beautified Atlantic Avenue among other important projects. • The decision to build a tennis stadium downtown to attract the Virginia Slims to Delray. While the Slims didn’t last, the Stadium did; eventually attracting an ATP event, major junior events, the Champions Tour, Fed Cup and Davis Cup. The decision to build downtown was an important branding decision for Delray giving the city international publicity and attracting people to Delray at a time when crowds were not the norm. • Successfully launching the CRA, which has become a major economic development tool for the city ushering in millions and millions in private sector investment. • Winning the first of Delray’s two All America City Awards in 1993, a major recognition of the city’s progress. A year later,
tom lynch
Florida Trend Magazine named Delray the best run town in Florida. And there were more accomplishments, but while important, over time people forget who did what and Tom was never the type to seek credit anyway. But what lasts are values and principles and that’s the “secret sauce” that separates a Tom Lynch from others who hold
titles such as mayor. People come and go in these positions, but values and principles tend to last and if you stray as a community they can serve as guideposts to get back to where you need to be. So what were those values and principles that Tom championed before, during and after he left office. • Delray should come first, before personal agendas and egos. • The job of an elected official is to do the right thing regardless of short term political considerations. Don’t kick the can down the road, think long term and have the courage to act. • Appointments to city advisory boards are important, take the time to put the right people in the right spots because they provide the commission with the advice they need to make decisions. Don’t reward friends or political cronies; look for people who have the skill sets to add value. P.S. if they perform they can become your future leaders. • City Commission is not an entry level position, it’s important for candidates to have experience in this community before you entrust them with the public’s purse
and important decisions. Do they work well with others? Are they single issue candidates? Do they do their homework? Are they willing to make tough decisions or do they just want to cut ribbons and ride in parades? Tom taught us to ask those questions and more. • Government can run like a business by being responsive to customers, entrepreneurial, efficient and fiscally responsible with taxpayer money. Like businesses, cities should make investments that yield returns, such as in the arts, sports and culture. • Government should not impose answers but act as a facilitator to assist businesses and or resolve disputes and issues between neighbors. And there are more, many more values and principles that Tom’s leadership epitomized. So that’s what I thought of when I walked into the Red Pepper Group’s studios and tried to give my two-minute testimonial.
Times Have Changed When I moved here as a 22 year-old reporter in 1987, Delray was a far different
place. There were few restaurants, virtually no nightlife, lots of vacancies on Atlantic Ave and a tremendous amount of crime and drug dealing. The politics were divisive and City Hall was suffering from instability and turnover. By the time Tom left the mayor’s office in 1996, Delray was well on the way but still had a long way to go. That’s the other lesson he and others imparted: cities are never done; they are always works in progress. But Tom’s under stated but strong leadership gave Delray its confidence back, we were a community that worked together, that acknowledged its problems and were willing to try innovative strategies to find solutions. We were no longer Dull Ray, the poor neighbor of Boca where nobody wanted to be, but a town on the rise that believed in itself. That’s what great leadership does, it engages, unites and excites stakeholders and leaves you with hope for a better tomorrow. And so it was. Great leaders touch people and leave a mark. They make us think about what we can become and they lead the way despite the obstacles. Tom Lynch’s brand of leadership continues to pay dividends.

TOM JOHNSTON Delray’s Smile Maker
By Diane Feen
{
Photo by melissa korman
No one can accuse Tom Johnston of being a slacker. He has worked since he was a mere tyke and has climbed more corporate ladders than a telephone repair man.
He didn’t start out with a fancy title or a leg up on the competition, he just knew that hard work was part of being a good citizen. “My mom installed a great work ethic in me. She raised four children on her own by working three jobs,” said Johnston, who teaches 5th grade math at Banyan Creek Elementary School. Johnston got his first job when he was 11-yearsold on a delivery truck and the following year he was putting out and packing up beach chairs at Rockaway Beach. At 17 he was hired to clean the beach, but it wasn’t long before he said goodbye to his Rockaway roots. “I did not want to go to college – and I knew I was going to get drafted – so I went to the recruitment office in Times Square and enlisted. I wanted to be in the navy but the navy officer was out to lunch so I joined the Marine Corps.” Johnston ended up spending four years in the Marine Corps on bases in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco. It was in the Marine Corps that he learned the most vital component for success – discipline. If you ask Johnston how he managed to succeed in the corporate world he will tell you that discipline played a big part. “I learned about discipline in the service and it stuck with me. We also learned about fulfilling ones obligations, respect, honesty and being true to your word.” Those qualities are what laid the foundation for Johnston’s success in the corporate world. At the New York Phone Company he started out behind the scenes working on intricate phone connecting wires but ended up as a Foreman. At Federal Express he started out as a driver, became a salesman and then a Managing Director. After retiring from Federal Express Johnston moved to South Florida with his family, but he didn’t rest
October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
on his laurels. Instead he went to work for a delivery start-up, but the company folded shortly afterwards. It was then that Johnston realized something was missing in his life. “I felt I could achieve more and I wanted to go back to school to become a teacher. Although I had attended college for three years in Houston I didn’t get a degree.” The degree – that Johnston wanted so badly – was finally attained at Barry University. Though he wanted to teach, he ended up with a business degree. But that did not stop him from realizing his dream of working with children. “I love kids so I started as a substitute teacher at Banyan Creek Elementary School and Carver Middle School. After a year I started teaching 5th year math at Banyan Creek Elementary.” That was 12 years ago. Since then Johnston has lived up to his full potential on a more genteel scale than the corporate one he started out in. “Tom is one of the key teachers at Banyan Creek. He brings years of corporate leadership to the table. I depend on him to tell me what I need to know, not what I want to hear, which in turn, helps me with my decision making,” said the Principal of Banyan Creek Elementary School, William J. Fay. You can see the joy that permeates the premises when Johnston is around. He teases lightly yet brings a heavy dose of reality intertwined with love. Students talk about him with awe and so do his colleagues. “Tom is awesome and the kids love him. He goes over and above what is expected and he helps the kids when they need it. He is a very special man,” said first-grade teacher Missy Tamburri. Susan Howard also admires Johnston. “Tom
is kid friendly and dependable. He also does wild and crazy things and is a delightfully complex person. I am honored to know him.” Although Johnston is known for being a disciplinarian in the classroom, he possesses a sillier side that lacks all selfconsciousness. During fashion shows at
Banyan Creek Elementary he often dons a ladies dress and a wig and transforms himself into Jazzé DuBois. During the holidays (at school) he becomes Santa Claus and at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Johnston transforms himself into a leprechaun. But it is at the infamous Garlic Fest in
Delray Beach that Johnston makes his most comprehensive transformation. For the past ten years he puts on a white puffy hat and a white tent dress and becomes Mr. Garlic. For two days and nights Johnston poses for pictures with guests and makes everyone smile with delight. Johnston doesn’t feel out of place dressed like a huge head of garlic, he relishes the personal touch that makes everyone feel so embraced by his presence. For that he is revered. “Tom is not only a true friend to me - he brings joy and happiness to everyone he comes in contact with. His wit and humor are infectious and he will ALWAYS make you belly laugh. He is the best marketing tool (and the most photographed) we have for the Garlic Fest!” said Nancy StewartFranczak the Executive Director of Festival Management Group, Inc. What makes Johnston such a rare person is his ability to take his Rubik cube persona and dial it up to match the occasion. In his classroom – that is as organized and clean as an army barrack – the kids are taught about discipline in a gentle way. “In the classroom the students must use manners and say please and thank you. They also have to raise their hands before speaking and the boys must tuck their shirts in. Some kids don’t get discipline at home but they need it. I love them all the same,” said Johnston who has a supply of candy and pretzels to hand out to students when their behavior exceeds the norm. When asked what he is most proud of Johnston says his family and lifelong friends. His wife Beth has a work history as illustrious has her husband’s (currently at FAU in the office of Governmental Relations), and he has two beautiful daughters Abbey and Clare. If you ask those who know him they are quick to note that Johnston is the friend you want in good times and bad. He’s also the teacher who demands the best from his students yet knows when to lend a helping hand (and a heap of love). And for that reason those who know him are grateful for his friendship. “Tom has a heart of gold. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, family and students and is the guy you want to have your back in a bar fight. He’s John Wayne, Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks all wrapped up into one great guy!” said Bern Ryan, CFO Festival Management Group. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | October 2014

A case of
Diabetes
BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.
“My wife made me come.”
“
“
I’ve seen it before. I first treat the wife’s thyroid problem, but then she realizes that I could help her husband with his medical concerns. When he sees how much energy his wife now has under my care, it isn’t too hard a sell to get him to make an appointment. Still, Ed was skeptical. “I’ve been with the same internist for years, but all he seems to want to do is to push drugs on me.” “Hmmmm. How so?” “A few years back, my blood pressure was high and he said that hypertension could cause a stroke and kill me. He said, ‘Try diet and exercise for 3 months’, but when I came back, it was still high, so he put me on meds.” Fran chimed in. “Those drugs had so many side effects. One made him hack and cough. Another made him tired and depressed. It took four tries before Ed found one he could tolerate.” “I’ve written articles about how serious hypertension is [1]. By subscribing to unbiased sources of information such as The Medical Letter [2], I prescribe the most effective and least toxic medications first, rather than the most expensive (and potentially dangerous) drugs that pharmaceutical reps like to advertise.” Ed continued, “That doctor also said my cholesterol was high and he said that atherosclerosis can cause a heart attack and kill me. He said, ‘Try diet and exercise for 3 months’, but when I came back, it was still high, so he put me on more meds.” “I thought the blood pressure drugs were bad, but these were so much worse. Not only did Crestor cause Eddie to get the worst muscle cramps, it was also damaging his liver [3]! I wonder if the treatments are worse than the disease!” “Statin drugs prevent the body from making too much cholesterol, but they also deplete the body of Coenzyme Q10, and that causes muscle aches, fatigue, and elevated liver enzymes [4]. I routinely check CoQ10 levels and use supplements to prevent those side effects.” “Anyhow, my last set of blood tests showed my sugar is high and that he warned that diabetes could kill me. Do you know what he said next?” “Let me guess, ‘Try diet and exercise for 3 months?’” Fran interrupted, “Eddie needs more than lip service. It would be one thing if he taught us how to eat better, but all he had time for was to write prescriptions.” “In addition to being a board-certified family physician, I also have a bachelor’s in Nutrition from Cornell, so I know how important diet and exercise is. You can’t teach 11 years of education in a 5-minute office visit, so I schedule 60 to 80 minutes with new patients, and at least 40 minutes for each follow up appointment. We’ll have plenty of time to teach you how to eat better.” “Dr. Woliner, you don’t understand. I know what to do, I just don’t do it. I guess I just love bread too much.” “No, I do understand. Eating too much isn’t just a cause of your weight gain, hypertension, and high cholesterol. It’ a symptom of the underlying condition which causes your sugar cravings. It’s called the METABOLIC SYNDROME, and when I fix your metabolism, you won’t crave bread excessively anymore [5].” Ed wasn’t convinced. “You’re going to get an Italian to stop eating carbs? Good luck with that!” “Let me make an analogy to help explain it. When a car is brand new, it doesn’t matter what type of gas you put into it, it runs fine. Even if the manufacturer says use Premium, if you use the regular 87 octane gas, you probably won’t notice any difference [6]. But when a car becomes a 55-year-old clunker,” Fran poked Ed’s arm as she realized I just called him a clunker, “you need more octane in the gasoline, otherwise the engine will start to knock. One of the problems with factory farms is that the soil quality is not there [7]. Our food doesn’t have all the vitamins and minerals in it as it would if we ate locally grown organic produce. Because I studied nutrition biochemistry and practice Functional Medicine, I know what vitamins and minerals we have to replace [8].”
Eating too much isn’t just a cause of your weight gain.
I started Ed on a few pharmaceutical grade supplements, and as his appetite and weight came down, I was eventually able to taper him off his blood pressure medications. At one of Ed’s follow up visits, he brought lunch in for my office. “Ever since I found this Organic Co-Op [9], my cooking has gotten so much better! You’ve got to taste the Purple Bell Pepper! It zings right off your tongue!” REFERENCES: 1. Woliner KN. Dealing with Hypertension. The Parklander. April 2011. Coral Springs, FL. p. 96. 2. www.medicalletter.org 3. Foody J. Enchanting Food Excellent Service
CAFFÉ LUNA ROSA By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

October 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Dining out is a sublime way to experience peak culinary contentment in an atmosphere that tantalizes the senses.
Why else would it be a grown-ups favorite pastime? Because it’s fun and the endorphin rush we get from fine dining beats a lot of other earthly pastimes. The folks at Caffé Luna Rosa know this all too well. That’s why they go to extreme measures to make sure the food they serve is fresh, well prepared and memorable. Otherwise the tables wouldn’t be filled and the regulars (and tourists) returning time after time. There is another secret weapon they have in their culinary arsenal, and that is excellent customer service. Maitré de Franco is a real mensch (a gem) and General Manager (and tallest person on site) Nikola is a genial fellow who cares about his customers. Add that to Chef Ernie’s powerful prowess whipping up amazing dishes and you have a winning com-
bination. That is the very reason Caffé Luna Rosa has been chosen as the best Italian restaurant in Delray Beach by Trip Advisor for the past few years. It’s also the reason that regulars like Billy of Delray Beach keep returning. “I have lived in Delray for 15 years and am a steady loyal customer at Caffé Luna Rosa. The food is beautifully crafted and always cooked to perfection. Franco always gives us a warm welcome and our favorite table. The tempo of service was perfect and every staff member was as gracious as could be.” What many customers who flock to Caffé Luna Rosa enjoy is the magnetic energy field that swirls around the restaurant like a wayward cocktail napkin. You can feel the anticipation of high culinary expectations and wit-
ness customers devour their favorite dishes night after night. Part of the reason for their jubilation is Chef Ernie’s tremendous passion (and experience) in the kitchen. As a teen Ernie watched his mother cook and couldn’t help but imbibe her joie de vivre for homemade Italian food. “I remember when I was a child my mom would start cooking at 9 am. And the whole house would smell of marinara sauce. I am fascinated by unique flavors and love to cook with seasonal local food and herbs.” Recently Ernie offered whole baked Orata (white fish) in a lemon, butter and fresh herb sauce filleted table side. North Carolina resident Julie Kass was so happy with her Orata she lit the terrace up with her smile. “This dish was fabulous.” Although this was her first time at the restaurant Julie came with locals Andrea and Avery Yudien who are big fans of Caffé Luna Rosa. “We love eating outside here. The fish was tender, the sauce was great and it’s relaxing and fun to eat here.” It’s easy to see why everyone is so smitten with this indoor-outdoor dining experience by the sea that trumps mediocrity by miles. And the atmosphere is festive with a casual elegance that makes everyone feel relaxed and happy. It doesn’t hurt that they have a 16page wine list with 24 wines sold by the glass (we love the Incognito). If you are unsure of what wine to drink just ask Nikola, he’ll help you navigate the endless choices and arrive at the perfect blend. One of our favorite special appetizers is their Baked Brie with Almond slices, toasted Challah Crostini and Golden Raisins. Another dish that shows off Chef Ernie’s culinary expertise is the fresh Diver Sea Scallops with a mushroom blend and chopped plum tomatoes in a light chardonnay sauce (it’s terrific). If you’re a follower of Dr. Oz and have
a penchant for healthy fare (that is wickedly tasty) try their Chop Salad (Insalata Tritata) with Romaine lettuce, chick peas, gorgonzola cheese, carrots, cucumbers, onion and toasted pecans in a red vinaigrette dressing. Other causes for celebration are entrees such as Scamponi con Granchio, made with wild caught Mediterranean Shrimp, stuffed with lump crab meat and served with stir fried vegetables and brown rice. Favorite fish dishes are fresh Florida Snapper Francese sautéed with julienne vegetables and brown rice and Yellowtail Snapper Alla Boscaiola with artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes and mushrooms in a lemon butter and white wine sauce. Veal is a signature dish at Caffé Luna Rosa so expect the best. Favorites include Scallopini Di Vitello alle Marsala - thinly pounded Veal Medallions with imported Marsala wine and exotic mushrooms with potato of the day. What makes Caffé Luna Rosa so popular is that their kitchen is your kitchen. That means that Chef Ernie will customize your veal dish (or any entrée) with ingredients that will harmonize with your taste buds. “If you want a special topping that is not on the menu all you have to do is request it and we will make it for you,” said Chef Ernie. We also recommend their fresh pasta dishes. One popular dish made with free range grass fed beef and homemade wide noodle pasta is their Pappardelle alle Bolognese. There are other homemade Italian pasta favorites as well that range from Ravioli to Linguine with clams, grape tomatoes and white wine. Caffé Luna Rosa has many outstanding attributes (aside from the homemade fresh food and serene surroundings) but one event guaranteed to hit a high note is their Four Course Pan seared scallops
Wine Dinner for $39. Guests get excellent wine (no typical house wine here), appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Each course is paired with an excellent wine and a moon lit sky. You can’t talk about Caffé Luna Rosa without touting their Brunch that is served every day. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the natural surroundings that complement the luscious food, which is why it is a tradition for locals (and lucky visitors). For starters their Cannoli cream French Toast with fresh berries is heavenly, and the Maine Lobster three-egg omelet with potato cake and fresh fruit is a runner-up. You know something is great is brewing because the crowds keep coming – and leave smiling. Chef Ernie works with partner Chef Marvin to complement the Caffé Luna Rosa fanfare during the day. For a final course try their decadent desserts. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe their Triple Chocolate Panache (mousse layered with chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and whipped cream) and New York style Cheesecake. Yum and amazing will suffice. If you want a real Florida experience (both socially and gastronomically) check out their Happy Hour from 4 to 5:30pm at the bar. Their half price menu is made up of lump crab cakes, bang bang shrimp, sesame chicken won tons and more. Drinks are half price in the bar area and at the table with dinner from 3pm to 6pm. Come to where reality meets fantasy. And make sure you’re hungry! Is My Pet Sick or Is this Normal?
H
ave you ever stopped to think of why we have come to believe that the road to good health is through toxic, chemically laden processed food, synthetic nutritional supplements and processed toxic chemical medicines? Have you ever looked at our environment and wondered how all the plants and creatures on our planet had survived and thrived for thousands of years without humans creating all these chemicals? How can we believe that ourselves and our pets will be healthier by ingesting and being exposed to toxic chemicals? We have to realize that all living things, plants and animals alike have limitations in their lives. Plants sprout, grow, bloom, reproduce and die. For some it may only be a short growing season while others such as trees may live for hundreds of years. Of course, they can sometimes be challenged by stress that occurs in nature. If their food source is depleted or over used by competitive growth, some will become susceptible to death due to disease, insects and other parasites. This same process is true with all creatures including ourselves and our pets.
If our nutrition is grown on tainted soil, sprayed with toxic chemicals and fertilizer, destroyed with cooking and processing and also full of chemical additives, it will affect the health of that creature in a negative way. Our pets are at our mercy for their well-being which includes choosing their diets. Their bodies are designed for very specific digestion of very specific food groups. While the body is designed to compensate when ideal foods are unavailable, this creates less than perfect health conditions. Similar to plants, our pets are at a much higher risk of health challenges and disease when the nutrition is not specific. When the nutrition is less than optimal, the body must move the nutrients to more critical areas to stay alive. A classic example is the shortage of fatty acids and their role in the body. When there is a shortage of the proper fatty acids or their use is blocked by toxic chemicals, dry, itchy skin will occur. This condition can lead to other skin problems such as inflammation, hot spots, fleas, ticks, and even bacterial and fungal infections. Fleas, ticks, parasites, and
other pathogens thrive with immune suppressed animals as their body defense is minimized. While medications, shampoos, topical remedies and parasite treatments can hide the symptoms temporarily, the conditions will reappear and other challenges may develop unless the core causes are addressed. When imbalance is present, it needs to be addressed in a way that provides for the body’s own mechanisms to fully function. Detoxification and ingestion of sound, species appropriate foods are what must be done. This can only occur naturally. Without the right nutrients in the right form and a way to prevent and eliminate toxins, the outcome will be a slow, health challenged death. Why not start the path to health today!!! BROWNIE ~ Just look at this face! She’s begging for a loving home. Brownie is a 1 year-old Boxer mix who’s had a rough start to her life, bounced from home to home to shelter through no fault of her own. Brownie is spayed and housebroken, and most importantly, the sweetest girl around.
A NO-KILL animal shelter. Open Tues - Sun
PUP ALERT! ~ “Hey you...yes, YOU! Did you know that Tri County always has pups, too? Yep, and we’re super cute, so I know you’ll want to meet us. Oh, and the cats here want me to remind you we have cats and sometimes kittens who long for loving homes, too. Adopt, don’t shop!”
BEAR ~ This handsome gent is a 3 yearold Yellow Labrador who’s just begging for a happy home. Bear is a friendly, happy, calm, well-mannered guy who’s neutered and knows some commands. Someone fed this boy a bit too much, so he’d do well to lose a few pounds by taking some nice walks with you.
11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. All animals are up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm tested. Adoption fees $110 and up.

A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... Spooky, Scary and Just Plain Stupid “Trick or treat, smell my feet, Give me someone good to meet…” Sometimes finding Mr. Right is like trying to identify the yummiest candy in your “Trick or Treat” pillowcase. There is a menagerie of sizes and shapes, shiny wrappers and delicious scents of sugary goodness. Digging thru the pile is a pretty tedious process. Yep, dating is pretty much like trying to find the ultimate treat on October 31st. You have to walk miles dressed up in ridiculous outfits (just like Spanx under that unbreathable dress), wear more makeup than usual (is my adult acne covered on my chin?), ring doorbell after doorbell (go on date after date) and deal with the disappointment of getting Dollar Store candy as opposed to the “good stuff” (meeting another crappy suitor). In utter frustration, your dating life feels like a series of “turning tricks” not literally of course. Is this the Heavens way of providing the trick not the treat? It never ceases to amaze me, when month after month, I get the phone call, the text or the email with another friend (whether male or female) that can’t wait to share their dating scenario for publication. My arsenal of material is like a bakery- take a number please! The

good news is that the material keeps coming and there is no lack of hilarious and pathetic inspiration for my monthly chronicles. Gabrielle went on a blind date, set up by mutual friends. She arrived early and had a glass of wine to take the edge off. Once her date arrived, she ordered another. His immediate arrogance prompted Gabrielle to accept that her date was a jerk so she mentally checked out. When it was time to leave, they exited together. Fashionable as always, Gabrielle wore a maxi dress (a long, summery dress for those who aren’t hip) and a pair of wedges. Unbeknownst to Gabrielle, the sidewalk was broken up by an uprooted tree and minor construction. In a split second, Gabrielle trips and goes down, elbow first. Splayed out on the pavement, and in excruciating pain, she regained her breath and composure and waited for her date to offer a hand to help her up. Instead, he stood there and without much concern or compassion, inquired if she was “ok” and waited for her to stand on her own two feet, unassisted. Pissed, shocked and in agony with a severely bruised elbow, she rose to the occasion literally, thanked him for the drinks and hobbled to her car. And I don’t have to tell you how this one ended. Next day; radio silence. Day after; radio silence. October 2014; radio silence. No call, no text and no concern that she might be really hurt. Out of common courtesy, don’t you think it was obligatory to at the very least, inquire if Gabrielle was ok? Apparently her date has zero common decency and no manners. Even worse, they share mutual friends. For the record, Gabrielle eventually
went to urgent care and as this article hits, is waiting for the elbow hematoma to shrink. This remains a badge of honor, that she wears as a daily reminder of her spectacular date with Prince Charming! The tricks keep coming….. Even in the twilight years, chivalry is still apparently dead. A well known and prominent 60+ member of our community took a lovely, 60+ lady to dinner (a first date). When the check came, he asked her “Are you going to sleep with me tonight?” When she replied, “No,” he slid the check in her direction and replied “Well then, you can pick up dinner.” In total disbelief, she slid the check back in his direction and confidently retorted, “NO, YOU CAN PICK UP DINNER.” In a huff, he grabbed the check, dropped money and told her that he wanted to make last call at his favorite watering hole. And yes, he got up and left her in the restaurant! It’s hard to believe, but sadly, another harsh example of the joys of courting. Dating is a lot like being a kid on Halloween. You wait all year for the night with much anticipation and excitement. You get all dressed up and go wandering for the ultimate treat(s). Sometimes you get stuck with a rotten apple instead of hitting the jackpot with a 100 Grand Bar or being smothered in Hershey Kisses or a lot of Almond Joy. No worries here, as Thanksgiving is almost upon us. I am sure many of you single people will have some face time with a turkey or two, and if you are lucky, you may find a really “sweet potato.” Happy and Safe Halloween All! ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People
Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus

The True Relievers If relief is what you’re looking for, look no further than these three alleviation gurus of the Grove. Natalie Kusturic the owner of DU20 Holistic Oasis, Kate Munson of Prime Spa Boutique and Dr. Elan Schrier are working to keep Delray Beach healthy and pain free. Whether it be submersing you in a sensory deprivation tank, correcting your subluxations or giving you a prime-time massage, they all aim to keep you in your happy state, and they couldn’t be happier to provide these healing services anywhere else but Pineapple Grove.
Kate Munson
I usually describe “Pineapple Grove” to my clients and friends as: “The Vortex of Awesome!” After all, where else can you find small-business owners, artists, etc.,consistently gathering on the beach in the evening and meditating with the intention of the whole?People really dig that kind of naturallyoccurring community.
Dr. Elan Schrier
I love having my practice in Pineapple Grove. There is a health conscious mindset that many people who come here to work, play and shop share. They seek out the high quality care, state of the art equipment and natural, holistic solutions that we offer. There’s a comradery between the local business owners. We’re one big family.
Natalie Kusturic
Pineapple Grove is a beautiful and sophisticated part of Delray Beach. It naturally attracts open minded and playful people. This is why my brother and I decided to open DU20 Holistic Oasis here.

It’s a great month to talk tennis.
{
We just witnessed another fabulous U.S. Open with a very strong Delray Beach subtext.
The men’s finals pitted Marin Cilic against Kei Nishikori, two former Delray Open Champions. Both Cilic—the defending champion—and Nishikori, the 2008 winner are expected back at Delray’s ATP tournament this winter. The Bryan brothers, the U.S. Open Doubles champions, are also expected back. Playing the Delray stop on the tour has become a tradition for the most successful doubles team of all time. Women’s champion Serena Williams also has Delray connections which include playing two Fed Cup ties at the Delray stadium. Whether you’re a fan or not, tennis looms large in the Delray story. In 1991, former Mayor Tom Lynch and the city commission made a decision to rebuild the tennis center and add a tennis stadium downtown, a decision Mr. Lynch has always cited as one of the key building blocks to rehabbing downtown and the city’s brand. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to have breakfast with Mayor Lynch. He still believes that the downtown stadium changed the dynamics in Delray by bringing people downtown and getting them to think differently about the city. That bold decision came at a time when Delray’s image was in need of repair and when the city longed for the day when parking and traffic might be an issue. After leaving breakfast, I filmed a tribute video for Tom who is receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Chamber of Commerce this month. The young couple supervising the shoot cited the Delray Stadium and the chance to see world class ten-

nis on the same street that they live on as a compelling reason why they love Delray and chose to buy a home here. Of course, there are other factors, but the allure seemed to be a small town, with big city amenities, including festivals, art, culture, restaurants and yes tennis. I bring this up because there seems to be some angst regarding the cost of the stadium and the tournaments. As the city grapples with the budget, $2 million items stand out. There is a price to pay to host these events, a real cost that becomes acute when there are other needs including paying for cops, firefighters, public works employees, pension costs etc. etc. So what about the big expense associated with the stadium and the ATP event? Should the city sell the stadium? Should the city get rid of the tournament? Or should the city further invest in the facility which is now starting to show its age (I’m not sure the seats were meant to recline, just saying)? This is a healthy debate to have, but if you are going to have it, you need to look beyond the balance sheet, which while very important, is only one piece of the puzzle–albeit a big piece. Decisions of this magnitude require careful analysis of a wide range of factors. There’s a lot of nuance involved beyond numbers on a spreadsheet. There is no doubt that the ATP event attracts people who spend money in local restaurants, retail shops and hotels. Does the city see that money? Not directly, but a healthy local economy certainly helps pay the bills. Further, tennis has done a lot for the
city’s image and brand, as Mayor Lynch envisioned. I think we may be the smallest city in the world with an ATP event and the coverage that event receives is worldwide. I recently read an article about Apple’s $3 billion plus purchase of Beats, a trendy headphone company. Did Apple overpay for a fad? Maybe. Did Apple need the headphones to survive? Hardly. But Apple saw a need to remain relevant with a demographic it deems important for its future. Cities also have to remain cognizant of their appeal as places to live, work, learn and play. In that context, the ATP event and stadium has a cool factor attached to it. I think it’s an asset. It sets us apart, it gives our downtown gravitas and it signals that this is a different kind of place. Of course, Delray doesn’t have Apple’s war chest, few nations, never mind cities do. So how about forming a public private task force that could look at ways to stop some of the bleeding and perhaps find some additional revenue streams? There are some very bright entrepreneurial minds in the community who I am certain would be interested in delving into the issue. Rather than dismiss and label a facility a losing proposition, why not engage people and find some solutions? Why not find a way to make this long ago investment work now and in the future? Or at least try.
