from the editor By Jeff Perlman, Editor

Welcome to the October edition of Atlantic Ave Magazine

T

his is the month where things begin to pick up ever so slightly in Delray. It isn’t quite “season” yet, but you can feel the cooler weather coming and with it a ramp up in the action. In this issue, we have tons of news and advice about

how to make the most of living, working, playing and visiting Delray Beach.

We also profile Terra Spero, a talented young entrepreneur whose

Real Time Marketing company fuels a lot of the events and busi-

nesses we have grown to love in Delray Beach.

I’ve known Terra for a few years now and have watched her juggle

a busy business with a growing family. It isn’t easy. Terra also finds the time to serve the community and give back to Delray Beach.

She serves on city advisory boards, is involved in local non-profits

and is always available when you need advice. Keep your eye on Terra, she’s doing great things in Delray with more to come.

Atlantic Ave Magazine would also like to welcome Rob Steele to

town. Rob is the new President of the Delray Center for the Performing Arts at Old School Square. In this issue, I reflect on the impact

made by Rob’s predecessor Joe Gillie. We will miss Joe, but we are

also excited about the next chapter in his life and about Rob being here. He has a great background in the arts and business and we wish him well as he takes the reins.

We also want to congratulate Police Chief Jeff Goldman on his first

anniversary as Chief.

Jeff is off to a strong start in a very tough job. We enjoy his focus

on community relations and like that he is always out and about supporting local businesses and meeting people.

Speaking of meeting people, we always enjoy your comments,

ideas and suggestions. We pride ourselves on being a local magazine and we can’t do it without you.

Thank you for reading Atlantic

Ave and for supporting our great

advertisers who make it all possible. It is deeply appreciated. Have a

Six Ghosts from Delray Beach’s Past Return For Delray Beach Historical Society’s 3rd Annual Halloween Fall Festival!

Oct. 16 Event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Will Feature a Haunted House and Two Outdoor Halloween Themed Movies at Dusk

8 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Delray Beach pioneers will be returning to haunt the Historic Cason Cottage House Museum for one night only during the 3rd Annual Halloween Fall Festival presented by the Delray Beach Historical Society and the Harvey L. Brown Insurance Agency. Set for Friday night Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the free event on the campus of the Delray Beach Historical Society will also feature two Halloween-themed movies provided by Palm Beach Outdoor Cinema – “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” and the feature-length, familyfriendly, film “The Halloween Tree” – as well as a variety of other activities for the entire family. Visiting the Cason Cottage Historic House Museum – transformed into a haunted house for the evening by the creative team at Space of Mind School House – will be the ghosts of pioneers including early settler Esther Sterling Williams, educator Solomon D. Spady, Delray’s first Mayor John Sundy, architect Sam Ogren, farmer Adolf Hoffman and native American Billy Bowlegs. In addition to the now famous haunted house, the Halloween Fall Festival will include a pumpkin-decorating contest – as well as vintage games and an oldfashioned bake sale. Free family portraits taken by 4th Ave. Photography in front of the historic buggy decorated for Halloween will also be available.

The Original Popcorn House will provide popcorn, and Solita/Mastino will provide pizza. Sponsors Dr. Jamie Alexander and Moroco Orthodontics will also be on hand to dish our candy – and toothbrushes! “Halloween is a big deal in Delray Beach,” said Brown, who is chairing this year’s annual Halloween parade presented by the Delray Beach Rotary Club. ‘It’s a special part of the fabric and character of our town.” To find out more, call 561-274-9578 or visit www.delraybeachhistory.org

October is Monday of Free Thought and it’s finally that time of the year where, hopefully, the weather cools off, Fall smells are in the air, and the art festivals are back! The 21st Annual Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival strolls into town on October 3 and 4 is a great way to enjoy the outdoors without feeling like you’re the clock in a Dali painting. This Festival brings together contemporary crafts from more than 100 of the nation’s most talented artists so you’re free to peruse the booths and let your mind and feet wander. You’ll find a variety of jewelry, pottery, ceramics, photography, painting, clothing and much more, and the best part is that you’re right downtown so you can enjoy a delicious lunch al fresco, to boot. The Festival is held along Atlantic Avenue and Fourth Avenue and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Festivals like these are one of the best reasons to live locally because you get to enjoy not only our year-round shops, but also get to enjoy the artistic gifts of crafters from miles away. The best part (as if it could get better) is that there is no admission to the Festival so you can come and go as you wish and also spend more money on gifts for yourself and maybe even find a few holiday presents. Or just more gifts for yourself, who’s counting. Visit www.artfestival.com for more information.

t’s important to try and lift people up, so let’s do just that! October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring

chromosomal condition. 1 in 691 babies born each year are born with Down syndrome and there are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the nation. The Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization is holding a Cut-a-Thon to raise money and awareness for Down syndrome and it’s going to be great! Held October 4 at the Hair Studio Artists Exclusive Hair Salon, 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Organization. You are invited to come with damp, shampooed hair and get a new hairdo for only $25! Hair Studio Artists are image makers and image professional who constantly strive to remain consistent, current and innovative in the salon industry, and they’re willing to work this day for a great cause. The event is held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cash and checks are accepted, as well as additional donations, and no appointments are needed. The Hair Studio Artists are located in the Delray Marketplace at 14851 Lyons Road, #114. Visit www.hairstudioartists.com or call (561) 270-3346 for more information.

amily always (well, mostly) makes everything better: when we need a pick-me-up, when we need to celebrate, and when we need a hug. October is Emotional Wellness Month and if you’re in need of some emotional TLC from a family member, present in the physical state or not, I’ve got you covered. The Lantern Festival: In the Spirit of Obon is a magical event held once a year and is an event not to be missed. The event is Japan’s summer homage to ancestors who return for a brief visit to the living, and what better place than the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. You are invited to enjoy Japanese folk-dancing, drumming, the Ennichi street fair and the iconic lantern floating ceremony in a Fall festival in the spirit of Obon. The event is held Saturday, October 17 from 3 to 8 p.m. and is a very special time for all family members involved. Tickets sell out quickly and will not be available day of so make sure you purchase them quickly. This will surely fill your emotional wellness bank with many priceless memories. am Amy Cropper originally from Ocean City, MD.. I have lived in FL for 15 years and mostly in South Florida. I absolutely love the lifestyle here and want to be able to enjoy all it has to offer. My previous career in Food and Beverage Management was good to me but I wanted more. I want to be able to have a business of making men and women feel good and more glamorous. Then an acquaintance introduced me to one of the owners of European Wax. Wow, what a great company. I did research and found that this business is just what I wanted. We provide services of waxing for men and women with a line of wonderful products for skin care. European Wax is known for the glamorous 4 step process of our very own comfort wax. We are also known for our eyebrow design along with the eyebrow powders and products along with exceptional customer service. Come see us at Delray Place Shopping Center and you will be amazed at how wonderful you feel inside and out . European Wax Center 410 East Linton Blvd, Store 706 Delray Beach, FL 33483 561-303-0908

y name is Susie Fernandes. Nearly twenty years ago I visited the City of Delray Beach from my home state of Rhode Island. I instantly fell in love with Delray Beach’s culture and seaside charm. I have always had a passion for real estate and started my career working on the finance side of the industry. Through my hard-work and a laser like focus on customer service, I successfully established one of the highest regarded mortgage processing companies in Palm Beach County. Due to my outgoing personality and desirefor continuous learning, it was natural for me to transition from the finance to the sales side of the real estate industry. Over the past twenty years I have built a network of loyal buyers and sellers, which has positioned me to provide my current clients with quick and equitable real estate transactions. In addition to my proven track record, I hold the Graduate Realtor Institute Designation, one of the most highly regarded designations in the real estate industry. Lastly, being a real estate sales associate is my life calling and brings me immense gratification every time I exceed my clients expectations. Call me today for your free market analysis! October 2 October begins promisingly with “Legend” the true story of notorious London East End gangsters Reggie and Ron Kray. In a bit of stunt casting, Tom Hardy plays both the identical twins, who terrorized London in the 1960s. Brian Helgeland (“Robin Hood,” “Mystic River”) directs his own script based on John Pearson’s book. Featured players are Emily Browning, Taron Egerton, Paul Bettany and David Thewlis. If you guessed “The Martian” was about a man from Mars, you would only be partially correct. Matt Damon is Mark Watney, an American astronaut stranded on Mars and left for dead after a fierce storm. Mark must survive by his wits and improvise a way to signal NASA back on Earth to say he is alive. Ridley Scott, who knows a thing or two about thrillers (“Alien,” Blackhawk Down”) is director of Drew Goddard’s script (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Cloverfield”) based on the novel by Andy Weir. Featured are

Zappa Plays Zappa at the Culture Room By skip sheffield photos by tom craig

44 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Dweezil Zappa is a lot better looking than his famous “Mothers of Invention” father Frank Zappa. He may be a better guitar player too. I can’t say for sure, because I never saw Frank Zappa play live. However, his son Dweezil keeps the legacy alive with a “Zappa Plays Zappa” travelling show which played the intimate Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale in September. Zappa played his dad’s “Once Size Fits All” album in its entirety. His band is phenomenal. Scheila Gonzalez (not a typo) plays keyboards, sings like a bird, and also plays sax and flute. Ben Thomas is the main singer, but keyboardist Chris Norton also sings and plays a variety of brass instruments. Drummer Ryan Brown sings too, but bassist Kurt Morgan sticks to his instrument, as does Zappa, playing a cherry red Gibson SG much like the one his father favored. “Zappa Plays Zappa” celebrates the 40th anniversary of “One Size Fits All.” Frank Zappa fans are legion, almost like a cult, but Dweezil seems OK with that. As for me, I most appreciated Frank Zappa’s caustic wit. “What’s the Ugliest part of your body?” I think it’s your mind. And for gosh sakes “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow.” I am confident Dweezil Zappa will return to South Florida playing his own stuff, which is pretty darn good.

Injured in an Auto Accident?

{

By Dr. John Conde

There are several variables that contribute to the likelihood of being involved in an auto accident which include the speed of the vehicle, design of the vehicle, road design, skill of the operator, and whether the operator was impaired while driving.

The most common injuries sustained in an auto accident include strain/sprains of the neck (whiplash) or of the lower back, herniated discs, contusions (bruises), abrasions (scratches), lacerations (tearing of the skin), knee injuries, and rotator cuff injuries. The most ominous injuries include traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal organ disruption. The neck and the lower back are the most vulnerable and susceptible regions in the body for injury in an auto accident. In regards to the neck, whiplash is the most common occurrence. It is impossible to prevent the neck from snapping forward and backward during impact. This action creates micro-tears in the ligaments and tendons that hold the neck on top of the body. Subsequently, secondary to the forceof the impact the rubber like material between the vertebrae called the intervertebral disc can tear. The intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, resilient layer called the annulus fibrosus and an inner gelatin-like substance called the nucleus which is an irritant to nerves. Upon tearing, the nucleus can herniate out of the disc and irritate spinal nerves producing neck or lower back pain and pain into the arm or leg. The impact experienced in an automobile accident may also have more ominous results such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Physical and cognitive symptoms may result such as headache, nausea, dizziness, problems concentrating, difficulty with short term memory, spasticity, weakness in the limbs, and gait difficulties. The 46 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

brain can shift forward and backward in in the skull in response to the violent forces put on the body producing a brain contusion which is termed a coup-contrecoup injury. Another brain injury occurs when the brain shifts excessively in the skull shearing the neurons on the outer surface of the brain. In any case, some level of neurological injury occurs in most auto accidents whether through direct or indirect trauma. A comprehensive examination must be conducted after the accident to detect the extent of neurological and orthopedic compromise. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment should be conducted immediately with a goal of reducing inflammation and restoring function. The current gold standard for soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains and even intervertebral disc injuries is Class IV High Power Laser Therapy. This FDA approved, orthopedic tool enhances tissue healing by tenfold by increasing energy and protein production in the damaged cells through a process called angiogenesis which develops new blood vessels to increase circulation to the damaged tissue. It also accelerates the release of oxygen molecules from the hemoglobin in the blood to the local tissue. The gold standard for the rehabilitation of disc herniations is a procedure termed non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. This process significantly reduces intra-discal pressure and promotes retraction of the herniation into the disc and facilitates influx of oxygen, proline and other substrates. The promotion of fibro elastic activity stimulates repair and inhibits leakage of irritant sulphates and carboxyl-

ates from the nucleus. The most recent trial sought to correlate clinical success with MRI evidence of disc repair in the annulus, nucleus, facet joint and foramina as a result of treatment and found that reduction of disc herniation ranged between 10% and 90% depending on the number of sessions performed, while annulus patching and healing was evident in all cases. Lastly, neurophysiologic rehabilitation must be conducted to treat the under functioning brain regions through a process called plasticity. Plasticity is the process by which a neuron can change according to the environmental stimuli it is exposed to. The gold standard for TBI and MTBI rehabilitation is the Dynavision D2 which is used across the world in major rehabilitation hospitals and in many collegiate and professional athletic programs. It works on visuo-motor-spatial skills as well as on a neurological process termed “efferent copy” which integrates two very important regions of the brain; the cerebellum and the frontal lobe. These areas of the brain are responsible for everything that makes us human such as problem solving, timing, sequencing, planning, initiating though processes, and coordination. The user is required to manually compress targets made up of 64 LED lights that are blinking in a strategically established manner according to the neurological presentation of the person. “Fall into Peeling” with a pumpkin Peel

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

Autumn has arrived in Delray Beach, and although we may feel refreshed that cooler air is on the horizon, the long, hot, sunny summer days may have left our skin craving refreshment.

Did you know that the vegetable (arguably a fruit) most symbolic of Fall is also one of the best kept secrets for skin care? Pumpkins signify harvest, holidays and loved ones gathered around the dinner table in celebration. They also conjure visions of JackO-Lanterns, scary Halloween faces, and the Mount Vesuvius pimple that may emerge on the chin after over indulging in trick or treat candy. Surprisingly, pumpkins can also be the source of healthy, radiant skin throughout the holiday and winter seasons. That’s right—pumpkin is no longer just for pie and carving funny faces from a fruit. It can also be used as a peel leaving the skin feeling wonderful. This amazing face rejuvenating pumpkin peel revitalizes skin because it contains the highest concentration of salicylic acid of any plant, providing potent keratolytic properties (skin smoothing and softening) 48 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

and pore cleansing action. Additionally, pumpkin boasts more than 100 beneficial components with the highest concentration of vitamins A, C, and beta-carotene found in any fruit or vegetable. Its aroma is divine, elevating the Balshi MD Med-Spa experience to an ethereal level. The perfecting pumpkin peel has simultaneous actions: it exfoliates and detoxifies as it draws impurities out of the skin while introducing vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients into the skin. It is an excellent treatment for those seeking new radiance for the holidays, as it stimulates circulation, promotes an antioxidant healing process and provides vitamin nutrition at the cellular level. The perfecting pumpkin peel will even out discolorations (melasma) of the skin and lighten age spots; it will shrink pore size and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike more harsh chemical peels,

there is no downtime with the pumpkin peel. This peel will ensure that your skin will be glowing with a healthy radiance from the moment each dreamy experience concludes. Ahhh Pumpkin! It’s more than a decorative Halloween tradition or a seasonal pie filling. It is one of the most nutritional sources of skin healing vitamins and minerals ever combined in a luxurious dermatologic spa facial. At any age, don’t we all need a “treat” in the season of pumpkins and goblins? The skin perfecting pumpkin peel will bewitch your skin and leave it with a mischievous, enchanting glow. Dr. Thomas C. Don’t Fear the Dentist!

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Don’t let dental anxiety keep you from having a healthy smile

Do you suffer from fear of the dentist? If so, you’re not alone. As many as 40 million Americans share your fear, with some 4 to 8 million so fearful that they avoid dental visits all together. Sadly, avoiding the dentist leads to declining oral health, generating greater fear and anxiety, continuing the cycle of anxiety and avoidance. The types of fear can range from minor anxiety to various forms of psychiatric disorders, such as dentophobia (an inordinate fear of dental treatment), aichmophobia (a pathological fear of all sharp objects), or trypanophobia (an extreme or irrational fear of needles). For others, their fear may be triggered by the sights, sounds or smells of the dental office or the confines of the dental chair, and an overall feeling of not being in control. Regardless of fear’s form or ferocity, it’s difficult for people to visit their dentist unless the pain becomes unbearable. This pain probably could have been avoided with regular preventative care, but it’s not too late to try and overcome your fears for the sake of your health.

What Dentist are Doing to Help Helping patients hurdle the obstacles of their fear should be the priority of every practice. Through the skilled use of sedation, dentists can manage their patients’ fear and pain. For many, local anesthesia may be all that’s needed to achieve a calm and pain-free experience. For others with mild to moderate anxiety, oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be used for relaxation. Those with heightened anxiety can benefit from conscious IV sedation. Unlike oral medications, conscious IV sedation affords the dentist the ability to control the degree of sedation throughout the procedure, as 50 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

needed, to ensure the patient’s optimal comfort and ease. The administration of IV sedation requires special training and certification. Placing your care in the hands of a fully-qualified practitioner will increase your confidence and quiet your anxiety. For patients with extreme anxiety, or those facing complex or lengthy procedures, IV sleep sedation is a fear-quieting option. Sleep Dentistry Genuine Sleep Dentistry is both fully tranquilizing and fully amnesiac, allowing you to relax and not focus on the sights, sounds and smells of the dental office. Until now, though, most patients had to bear the high cost, inconvenience and added stress of hospitalization in order to safely take advantage of the benefits, but no longer. Sleep Dentistry, which is admin-

istered in the dental office, allows the dentist to erase years of neglect in one visit, enabling patients to receive the care they desperately need. The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dentist. Once your dentist knows what your fears are, he/she will be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more comfortable. Your dentist can also review every step of every dental appointment and procedure so you feel more in control. It’s never too late to receive optimal dental health, and don’t let your fear hinder your chances of making the most out of your beautiful smile!

Putting Together a Workout Plan

{

By Jay bozios

Exercise is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you are trying to shed a few pounds, gain muscle, or completely transform your body, diet and a strict workout regimen is key. However, once you start getting familiar with your weight training and cardio program where do you go from there? Many people know how to exercise, but may not be so sure of how to separate their workouts and schedule routines to benefit their bodies the most. Looking at a workout regimen, a common question is: What body parts do I train together? How many times a week should I train those areas? And how many rest days should I allow myself in between? This can be a confusing breakdown if you are not familiar with how to follow a weekly workout. First things first: create a practical and realistic routine that you can stick to 100%. Completing workouts each week will not only boost your strength and endurance, but it will also boost your self-esteem. There is always a sense of accomplishment when you can cross one workout off of your list. Next, take a look at your overall goal. For some, aside from losing weight, might want to bulk up their arms and tone their upper body. With this goal in mind, you should focus at least four workouts a week on your upper body. Keeping with that plan, your entire upper body then needs to be split up into even smaller sections. For example - in order to increase the muscle mass in your upper body, you want to focus on back and biceps - one day only. The following day you work chest and triceps, take a rest in between with some core and cardio, and follow up with a day of shoulders. There is no need to go crazy with the amount of time you spend on these workouts. Most important is to focus on the amount of reps and sets you choose to complete, regardless of how long it takes you. A workout consisting of five different exercises in one full set, and then repeating that set three times total will be a great workout for the day.

52 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Now lets not get resistance weight training confused with cardio routines in the gym. A combination of both cardio and weight training will be the exact recipe you need to reach your goals. But depending on what you specifically want to accomplish over time, will determine the amount of cardio days needed in a given week. The most effective form of cardio for weight loss is HIIT Cardio. This stands for High Intensity Interval Training. An example of this form of cardio is a workout consisting of sprints on the treadmill for about one minute followed by a minute of rest or walking on an incline. Anything that allows you to exert your energy as much as possible for a short intervals followed by a rest is a good way to burn those calories and shed fat! An overlooked but extremely important and healthy component is to make sure you take rest days to ensure proper muscle recovery. Your workout routine will dictate when you incorporate rest days. If you choose to work glutes and thighs one day, you will want to take at least a day of rest or a day of cardio in before working legs again. You may decide to do glutes and thighs one day, cardio the next, back and biceps following that, and then back again to glutes and thighs. The proper daily scheduling of your workouts can be the integral part to your journey towards success. While this all may sound like a lot of information to grasp, do not worry. There are plenty of articles that can be found online or consult a fitness professional to further explain the proper structure of workout routines. Below is the regimen I am currently following myself and continue to follow as I set out to burn fat and bulk up all while eating clean along the way! Monday – Legs, Tuesday – Chest, Wednesday – Back, Thursday – Shoulders, Friday - Arms and Core Isolation, Saturday - HIIT Cardio, Sunday – Rest Mintfit 111 ReFresh ReShape ReEnergize 111 East Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-274-7477 www.mintfit.com

LEE COHEN Personal Injury Attorney With A Heart By diane feen

{

photos by melissa korman

It’s easy for Lee Cohen to look up to the stars for inspiration. One reason is that this local Delray personal Injury attorney stands six feet tall; the other is his magnanimous personality that has supported many in their quest for greatness.

Cohen’s head and heart are always in sync when doing good in the community (and for the children living within its boundaries). He is recently spearheaded a fundraising campaign in which his firm matched donations up to $5000 for the safety patrol at Pine Grove Elementary School to insure they get to the national conference in Washington DC. He is also the title sponsor of the Boca Flag Football League. But there’s another reason that Cohen’s smile has upped its wattage lately. He is running a very upbeat TV commercial over 15 times a day on major TV stations. The commercial – that features 20 local Delray residents shot at 12 different Delray busi54 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

nesses – is folksy and friendly with a legal slant. But you won’t see any bookcases and serious law speak within its scope. “People who need lawyers are often intimidated by the process of finding one. They don’t know what to do and are often scared about the entire process. My goal is to help simplify the process for those injured in an accident and allow for them to just focus on feeling better.” The commercial – that is quite charming – was created by Ryan Boylston of Woo Creative and produced by Brave Man Media with the goal of making the law profession look more personable and approachable. “Law firms get a bad rap because they seem

impersonal, harsh and uncaring. Lee Cohen says through his actions that he is personable and caring. He was a pleasure to work with and let us run with this unique and powerful new trend in advertising,” said Ian LaQua, head of production for Brave Man Media. The commercial was shot with local clients and friends of Cohen’s in Delray Beach. The spot highlights their humanity - and our common humanness - in a respectful yet upbeat way. “I wanted people to feel comfortable enough to call and reach out to me. I never want anyone to feel pressured into making a decision. I just want to make sure that they understand their rights.”

Cohen has another reason to see the sunny side of life. He recently moved his office from a quaint location south of Atlantic Avenue to a larger more citified site right in the heart of downtown Delray (on the Avenue). With loft ceiling heights, wood-like flooring and large picture frame windows, this space is one part Manhattan and two parts Delray folklore. “I wanted to make a change – we had outgrown our last location. This new office and location is phenomenal and beautiful. We needed more space and we couldn’t ask for a better location.” If the answer to all real estate questions is – location, location, location, then Cohen is in the central orbit of Delray Beach. “Clients love our new location. We didn’t lose our personal touch and it’s not too corporate – it’s anti-stuffy,” said Cohen whose background space is inhabited by a large modern black and white DeBilzan painting. This central hot spot fits Cohen’s Delray proclivities to a tee. He adores the Delray vibe and the way the community rallies around one another. If you’re looking for Cohen you can often find him eating lunch at local restaurants with other Delray professionals. If you can’t find him there his other call to action is his well known moniker – 1-800-CALL-LEE. According to Ryan Boylston, President of

Lee’s new office above Atlantic Ave.

Woo Creative, Cohen is truly his namesake. “People are always saying ‘call Lee.’ They call him when they need money for turkeys for Thanksgiving at the high school; they call him for help with charitable causes and when they need an attorney. This whole campaign grew organically. Lee is so much a part of Delray that it’s become natural to say, call Lee.” Cohen has also recently become a board member of the Delray Beach Chamber Proud dad with his proud daughter, Kylie

of Commerce, and is co-owner of Smoke BBQ in the center of town. “I am a minority owner of the restaurant, and am laying down roots in Delray Beach. This is the most up and coming area of South Florida. It’s become a big town with a small town feel. Delray Beach is driven by relationships and we support our own. This is my home; I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.” That is one reason he works closely with Woo Creative, The Buzz Agency and Brave Man Media. Though Cohen teamed up with Ft. Lauderdale personal injury law firm Carner, Newmark and Cohen, he is their Delray Beach superstar. “At Carner, Newmark and Cohen, LLP. we provide our clients with the utmost in professional legal representation during their time of need. Unlike some law firms who dabble in a wide variety practice areas, our practice is devoted to personal injury law exclusively.” Cohen is also on the board of Prep & Sports, mentored high school students and attends fundraisers for good causes (often with wife Lindi). It is his commitment to making Delray Beach a great place to live that has garnered him the unspoken title of Delray Beach Good Guy. And it’s not unfounded. “Lee’s heart is in the right place. He helps the kids understand what is important in life and he’s always there for them to talk to,” said Tavarius Jackson, Head Football Coach of Atlantic High School and founder of Prep & Sports. Walls of colorful paintings from local artisans, seashell picture frames, handmade jewelry, and an art studio filled with pottery and art creations bring out your inner artist. All this and more can be uncovered at ‘ArtSea Living’, a quaint boutique and art gallery located on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. The boutique supports local artisans and carries an eclectic array of unique art pieces from talented artists right in your backyard. The owner Barbara Lentz, known as Babs to her friends and customers, is also a gifted artist and entrepreneur. Babs runs the store with her two daughters, Sami and Kirsten, and fiancée Rody with the goal of inspiring others to find their inner artist. Her love for art started at a young age, painting and making paper dolls and clothing. Then, she continued her passion by selling children’s clothing and accessories to boutiques in Miami. As soon as you enter the artsy boutique, you feel a jolt of creative energy and are inspired to create an art masterpiece or, quite possibly, a Picasso work of art.

ago, and then moved to the City of Delray Beach a year ago. “I was inspired to open my own boutique. I saw how people were buying my work, and I realized it was a niche market if I opened a boutique gallery and helped other artists sell their craft,” said Babs. Her motto is for her customers to live the artful lifestyle, and she believes in “the Art of Business and the Business of Art”. Inspiring others through art and really listening to what her customers want is what sets the local boutique apart from the rest. “People are called into the store. There’s such a great creative energy when you walk in. I believe the energy comes from the art that goes into the creations and comes out

when you are walking around the boutique or creating a painting in our art studio,” said Babs. “Everybody is creative; they just have to tap into it. Everyone needs to find a balance in their life and a creative outlet to refresh and rejuvenate.” Babs has created that relaxing place for her customers. The boutique side of the business offers sea and beach themed art such as paintings by local artists, custom jewelry, home décor, vintage and antique furniture, candles, creative gifts, boutique items and art of all mediums, along with a 1927 baby grand piano in the center of the store. There is truly something for everyone.. from beautiful paintings of Delray Beach to handmade necklaces and much more.

Everything you need to live an “artsea” lifestyle

In addition to buying a unique piece of art, you can also become an artist. The Art-Sea studio provides a tranquil setting for budding artists and those that simply want to unwind and forget about everyday worries. A large mural called ‘Leaves of Love’ adorns a wall, with inspirational quotes such as: “Owning your own story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.” Customers from all over, as close as Delray to as far as London, can post their own inspirational quotes and then another person can take their quote home with them and use that as an inspirational mantra. Glass and pottery painting as well as other make and take projects are available daily, on a “walk-in” basis. Many classes are also offered to bring out your inner artist including: paint your own pottery, come clay with me for children and parents, fine art classes, mosaic, wine glass painting, kid’s art camps, and much more. The art studio is a perfect setting for a birthday party, to celebrate a special occasion with friends, corporate team building, featured artists events, artisans’ fairs, and meet and greet with the artist events. They have also started, Art Studio On Wheels, where Babs and her daughters can bring the art party to your special event! Visit www.artstudioonwheels.com. Babs is happy to inspire others to become artists and to mentor future artists right here in Delray Beach. “This is my love, my passion, and when you can monetize your love and your passion, you don’t work a day in your life!” said Babs, adding. “All ages can enjoy art and we are promoting the artsy lifestyle. What makes Art-Sea Living unique is the fact that we teach the art as well as sell the art and now we will be coming to people’s homes and venues. I absolutely love the art of business and the business of art!” Stop by Art-Sea Living and get inspired and discover your own passion for creating a unique piece of art! All your worries melt away and you feel an instant sense of calmness as you breathe in the positive aura in the new age store. Once greeted by Nicole, owner and renowned psychic, you feel at ease and know you are in good hands… Nicole is truly a gifted psychic with 25 plus years of expertise. That gift shows in her readings. Unlike a majority of psychics that probe and ask their clients questions before reading their palm or tarot cards, Nicole doesn’t ask any questions before a reading. In fact, she only asks her clients if they want any other guidance after the reading. And after that reading, you will be amazed and telling your friends: “How did she know that?”

The moment you walk through the doors of Nicole’s New Age Boutique, your life will be changed for the better. Her response to being so accurate: “I read the energy from a person, and I use the tarot cards as a map, the lines of a palm, and their date of birth and connect all areas to detail a reading or something going on in the near or far future.” In actuality, Nicole’s New Age Boutique goes beyond just getting a reading about your past, present and future. She truly cares about each of her clients’ well being and wants them to have a happier life. Nicole acts more as a psychic intuitive counselor and has guided many people in the areas of love, family, finances, health, marriage and negative surroundings. She has also helped on all matters that concern people the most such as: decisions in business, Celtic cross tarot spread

money, relationships and family problems. To the skeptics, she says it’s important to have an open mind before a reading. “When I am doing a reading, I want the person to be relaxed so I can hear what they are trying to achieve. It’s more than just getting an answer about their career or love life, it’s about trying to heal that person in terms of mind, body and where they will be going in their life,” said Nicole. Going beyond just answering a question about your life or relationships, Nicole gives direction and advises clients to use natural remedies and to tap into their own psychic abilities. “If someone wants to get a relationship back on track, I direct them to tap into their own spirituality to get control of their future. My clients are not just getting a reading but I’m helping them get a day-to-day perspective of their thoughts. I tell them to focus on the positive; it is truly about what you put out into the universe,” she said. The local psychic has impressed many with her readings. She has a well known new age boutique in Midtown, Miami and has

clientele throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has also been hired to do readings at the Standard Hotel, on ESPN radio to predict the winners for the NFL, and has been voted Best Psychic by the New Times, just to name a few of her accolades. She currently has two boutiques located in Delray Beach at 916 5th Ave, and 80 NE 4th Ave. Her boutiques offer palmistry, tarot card readings, handwriting analysis, reiki healing, chakra balancing, horoscope charts and past life regressions. What also makes the boutique unique is the retail aspect. Clients can buy quartz crystals, scented candles, tarot cards, incense, aromatherapy oils and bath salts, spiritual healing guides and more. Nicole is also available for readings at private parties, birthdays, holiday parties and events. “I find it rewarding when people come back and tell you about their predictions and that they did come true. Also to see their appearance change and their attitude towards life and different situations, it is rewarding to know that you made that positive change in their life,” said Nicole. Let Nicole predict your future and guide you in the right direction. She’s predicting that the City of Delray Beach will continue to have positive growth and expansion with the opening of more restaurants and businesses. Discover what is in store for you! It was love at first sight for Nick and Mackenzie Stump. They loved the vibe of the Avenue, the restaurants and the artsy buzz of Pineapple Grove.

Raised in North Carolina both Nick and Mackenzie had never been to South Florida when they arrived in Palm Beach County on their honeymoon in 2013. “My in laws had a house near Delray and my motherin-law made a list of things for us to do. The first thing on the list was to walk Atlantic Avenue and eat at one of the restaurants. We ate at Tryst and liked it so much we came back three more nights,” said Mackenzie with a smile. But they don’t regret that decision. As a matter of fact, their passion for city by the sea enveloped their thoughts like a tidal wave. Within a year they packed up their things and headed to Delray to put down roots. Mackenzie teaches English at Atlantic High School in the IB Program and Nick has rooted himself firmly within his comfort zone as well. “I grew up running cross country, track and marathons, but worked as a Social Studies teacher in North CaroWith so many options, Fleet Feet Sports is sure to have the right fit for you

With my new store (and profession) I get to teach people about the benefits of proper fitting shoes, apparel, healthy running and a healthy lifestyle.” The world that Nick and Mackenzie now inhabit is called Fleet Feet Sports. Located on Federal Hwy and Linton this 2,400 square-foot-store is filled with the latest technology in running shoes, apparel, technical wear, sports bras, specialty socks, Tshirts and recovery equipment. From its interior space to every inch of its material matter getting (and staying) healthy is at

the zenith of its core. “We listen to our customers’ stories. We ask questions and give recommendations. We have all brands of running shoes from Brooks, New Balance, Adidas, Asics, and so much more. If your feet hurt and you don’t know where to go, come here,” said Nick. There are CW-X leggings that improve biomechanics during motion, high end running shoes with absorbable foam, mesh sneakers with wicking properties and seamless technology. The colorful Balega socks come in varying thicknesses and

There are rollers, balls and wands that allow you to manipulate muscles, warm up tissues and relax tired body parts. Fleet Feet Sports also has compression sleeves with pockets for ice and calf sleeves with icing packs. They sell Mace pepper spray, OOFOS sandals, water bottles and running socks in every color and style. For the person who wants to run long distances or marathons Fleet Feet Sports has other ingenious products. Neon waist belts from Nathan Sports stretch to your waist and have a zipper to hold your essentials. Their smart phone carriers (that fit on your arm) make communication and movement coexist beautifully. If you are finicky about comfort Fleet Feet Sports sells Laser Perforated T-shirts (with no seams), reflective bands, HOKA running shoes that look like a Tesla for your feet, socks and support devices that ease Plantar Fasciitis woes. “Everything we do is to find ways to enrich people’s lives so they can feel comfortable. We want exercise and running to be fun,” said Nick, who is endearingly passionate about his new athletic store. Fun is a key word when it comes to the mind set of both Nick and Mackenzie. They offer weekly Fun Runs on Monday and Thursday at 6:30pm - and all are invited. They also attend local running events and have a tent where they offer massages and nurturing for the body and spirit. They are involved in the “No Boundaries” Couch to 5K training programs. “On November 21st we will be at the Coconut 5K Run and Walk to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters at Okeeheelee Park.” Because Fleet Feet Sports is driven by its passion for the city it inhabits they support local businesses and causes. Just recently they purchased nylon and spandex leggings and shorts from a local Delray company called Hallow & Plank. Nick and Mackenzie are thrilled to be a part of Delray Beach and even more excited about supporting the active healthy lifestyle that characterizes the town they love. All you have to do is step inside their store and you too can witness the miracle on Federal.

The Miracles Of

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in South Florida by Diane Feen

Ray Cralle has been on mission for the past 40 years. And, Its’ been to heal those who come to see him.

As a renowned Physical Therapist specializing in Neuro-Rehabilitation and Sports Rehabilitation, Cralle has worked with children and adults with various disabilities. Some are famous Polo players, NFL and NHL players and others who need Cralle’s tender touch. In the past 20 years Cralle’s passion has been to treat veterans suffering from concussive brain disorders or PTSD. He was one of the first to pioneer, treat and tout the miracles of Hyperbaric Oxygen. Cralle worked with Dr. Richard A. Neubauer and together they saw the healing power of HBO for patients (and veterans) with these maladies. “We have been treating veterans pro bono since 2009 with HBO. A team of doctors and myself have treated veterans who have come from all over the country. Many were on ‘Black Box’ drugs with side effects such as depression, suicide and an inability to function in society,” said Cralle, who was a keynote speaker during the Annual Meeting of The National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs in Orlando on September 2nd. Cralle is very happy these days. He’s happy that the mainstream medical community, Veteran’s Executives and politicians are acknowledging what he knew all along – that HBO can help people that have had strokes, brain injury, concus66 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

sions and other related medical problems. Originally, the treatment consisted of five to six hours of neuro-cognitive testing, brain imaging, and 20 hyperbaric treatments followed by repeat brain imaging, another 20 hyperbaric treatments and a final psychological testing. “The original findings rattled clinical

psychologist Jeffrey Gran, who could not believe the rapid cognitive improvements found in his testing. It was confirmed by the brain imaging results noted by William Maxfield, M.D. As an old Marine I served with people who had similar injuries (from exposure to blasts in the military) that could not live normal lives after-

wards. Had Hyperbaric Oxygen been available to them many of their symptoms would have disappeared,” said Cralle. Cralle is thrilled that the Florida Veterans Foundation is working with the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs to get a Bill sponsored like the one passed in Oklahoma that allows veterans free access to HBO. Cralle knows this would benefit not only the veteran, but society as a whole. “There are over 80,000 new individuals living with significant, permanent disability due to TBI. To date, the Center for Disease Control estimates five million are clinically impaired. Medical (and indirect costs) were approximately $60 billion in 2003. Lifetime cost for one surviving TBI individual can reach $4 million. Total cost of care expenditures is $12.5 billion. Savings accrued if brain injured vets were restored to preinjury levels is $8.9 billion. Total cost of HBO per veteran is $10,474.40 (40 sessions).” Cralle’s ORCCA Hyperbarics in Delray Beach is the only free-standing hyperbaric facility in the United States that offers Physical Therapy on site. They are also the only center in the United States to be paid by the Veterans Administration to treat Blast related injuries. Cralle is working with stem cell companies such as STEMEDIX. “They have found that by reducing inflammation, HBO enhances Stem Cell ‘take.’ We are getting calls from all over the world,” said Cralle who has treated people from Nigeria, France, China, Germany, Canada and all over the US. One person whose life was saved by Hyperbaric Oxygen is Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Patt Maney. Maney was suffering from a traumatic brain injury after an explosive device went off near him in Afghanistan. His traumatic brain injury almost destroyed his civilian life as a judge. “Maney spent 20 months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center but credits hyperbaric oxygen treatments he received as a true miracle. Judge Maney created ‘Veterans Treatment Court’ within Florida’s Courts.” Cralle plans to collaborate with Miami Veteran’s Hospital on a study of the effects of HBO on veterans with concussive brain injuries. Cralle calls these injuries “The Silent Wound of War.” “All we need is the money ($2 million) required to treat these veterans and develop the study. We operate a 501(C) (3) charitable foundation called Hope Springs that supports veterans and others who don’t have the funds for treatment.” Cralle and ORCCA (Oxygen Rescue Care Centers of America) has been recognized by top politicians and military brass for work with veterans. He was recently called “The Hero of a Hero” by former Navy Commander Dennis O. Baker, who authored a book called “Restless Hearts.” Hyperbaric oxygen also helps stroke victims, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Parkinson’s disease, Lyme Disease, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Post Concussive Syndrome, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, Sports Injuries, Near Drowning Accidents, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and many other conditions. Enhance your skin. Elevate your mood. Essential oil treatments personalized for you at

The Seagate Spa by LINDA BROWN

{

The way we look and the way we feel are intricately intertwined. To reflect this unique connection between mind and body, The Seagate Spa offers essential oil treatments that adeptly address both the inner and outer states of our being.

The Seagate Spa features a long list of skin and body treatments incorporating aromatherapeutic body oils from revered British spa and skincare brands, Elemis and ESPA. Better still, each luxurious treatment is custom designed to address the unique skin problems and emotional concerns of the individual receiving it. All face and body treatments are 100% natural and suffused with precious essential oils. The oils are highly effective at hydrating dry skin and breathing new life and vitality into a tired complexion. But perhaps the most unusual benefit of the ESPA body oils is that they work systemically with your emotions as well as your skin. You’ll achieve both short- and long-term results to the body and the mind. To determine your best treatment, the spa’s highly trained therapist will sit with you to custom design a program that addresses your unique problems, such as a dull complexion, dry skin, sagging jowls, or puffiness under the eyes, for example. Just as important, you’ll be asked about your emotional state. Are you feeling anxious? Depressed? Under the weather? Have you been experiencing muscle aches or pain due to an overly strenuous workout routine? Based on your answers, the consultant will narrow your choices down to two essential oils. Each oil has its own specific benefit. From this point, your nose will help you make the final determination. Through sensory testing (using your sense of smell), you’ll choose which option to incorporate into your treatment. Just relax, inhale deeply, 70 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

and go with the one that feels right to you. Let the aroma guide you. If soothing is what you need, your nose may choose a blend of sandalwood, rose geranium, frankincense, and myrrh, which calm and quiet the mind from everyday worries. This blend can also ease tired, tense bodies into blissful sleep. If resistance is a concern, a potent well-being duo of tea tree and eucalyptus will help revive and enhance natural defenses while invigorating your mind. Sweet orange, rose geranium, and lavender have a restorative effect, easing anxiety, dispelling nerves, and bringing about a sense of optimism. For detoxifying, purifying skin, and boosting circulation, a combination of cypress, juniper berry, and grapefruit will help your body naturally sweep away toxins, while uplifting your spirits. Intensely invigorating peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary have an energizing effect, revitalizing sluggish bodies and weary minds. Overdone the fitness routine? You’ll probably be drawn to the deeply warming and relaxing Indian bay, clove bud, and lavender combination. It’s especially good at easing joint and muscular aches and pains pre- and post-workout. These richly luxurious and light oils are available in number of treatments, including facials, body treatments, and therapeutic massages. They are also available to take home to extend your therapy. In fact, ESPA oils are ideally suited to using at night when your skin has time to fully regenerate. As for choosing the right treatment method, it depends on your needs. To relax

and renew, consider an ESPA Aromatherapy Massage. This Balinese-style massage addresses concerns ranging from jet lag to a lackluster immune system. The ESPA Restorative Ritual is the perfect remedy to melt away muscular tension. Want to leave your skin feeling deeply cleansed, moisturized, and looking flawless? Choose the Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow. Maybe there’s a particular area of the body you wish to focus on. If so, try an Advanced Hand and Foot Ritual or the Frangipani Conditioning Hair and Scalp Ritual. The latter uses Polynesian monoi oil to soften both the skin and hair. Or, exercise a little couple’s therapy by enlisting your significant other in the Frangipani Body Renewal. Whatever your inner or outer beauty needs, The Seagate Spa has the optimum solution for restoring balance and beauty. To book your personalized consultation and treatment, call 561-404-1555. Higher Power

By john davis, lmhc

{

“Strive to be a non-anxious presence in an anxious system” my coach had said during a wilderness hike in the high mountains of California.

“Families, corporate teams and community organizations often develop fear, turbulence and dysfunction when anxious and become less effective.” A “non-anxious presence” (coach, parent, manager, guide, therapist) can bring welcome clarity and resilience. On retreat, I learned to calm my thoughts and relax my body using my breath awareness and exercises to release tension held in my body. The result was an immediate increase in mental focus and available energy. No experience since has more powerfully changed my view of helping others. Lowering and strengthening our basic “emotional set point” can bring calm and greater awareness during stress and experiences of high emotion, especially sorrow, frustration and anger. Being highly aware is a great habit. Constant “hyper-vigilance”, not so much. Some of the primitive parts of our brains, like the tiny, almond shaped amygdala, promote a constant state of readiness below our awareness. Like other animals, we are hard wired to maintain a state of alert, like a “force field” carried unconsciously using energy wastefully. Research has shown that it can elevate pulse and blood pressure, increase emotional sensitivity and cause pervasive worry, including excessive rumination over past events. No surprise that depression is so prevalent in our culture. While these natural bodily reactions served us well when dinosaurs threatened, they’ve remained a vestigial, “out of whack early warning system” with nothing real to fear. Some people “medicate” this discomforting “uptight-ness”

72 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

with alcohol, drugs and caffeine, even food...thereby shortening lives and reducing the quality of experience. We can manage anxiety naturally with guidance and practice. The benefits of regular, methodical slowing down and increasing our sensory perceptions are many and can bring about rapid feelings of strength, energy and enjoyment. Try it next time traffic grinds to a halt in front of you. With red brake lights as your cue: Relax your hands and shoulders. Breathe deeply. Be grateful for something. Notice the sky and trees. Remind yourself that this will soon pass. Go about your journey more mindfully.

The increased capacity for self-regulation of physical and emotional states I’ve gained from practicing a few basic disciplines like yoga and meditation has increased my strength and patience. The awareness has shaped my life and professional practice profoundly. Our kinder, resilient, more generous “Buddha nature” lies within us. I think of it as our “higher power”. We can access this unique and life changing force with every breath and every step. John Davis, LMHC Licensed Mental Health Counselor 561-213-8030 www.johndaviscounseling.com

Appreciating Joe Gillie

A Personal Reflection on His Retirement

{

By Jeff Perlman

photo by melissa korman

I remember the time I met Joe Gillie. It was 25 years ago and he was a board member at Old School Square, which at the time was a fledgling experiment in a town trying desperately to change its narrative.

It was 1990 and Delray Beach was a very different place. In March, the city held a landmark election and elected a slate of candidates who promised to reform government, bring stability to City Hall and implement what was being called a “Decade of Excellence.” The 80s had been a rough decade for Delray, also known as “Dullray” back then. The city had serious crime issues, the downtown had major vacancies and the crack cocaine epidemic had engulfed entire neighborhoods. But there were signs of hope all around. Visions 2000 brought people together. There were plans to reform schools, a new CRA was doing good things, historic districts were being established and the Decade of Excellence Bond passed with huge voter support, promising over $20 million in needed improvements and beautification. A year later a visionary police chief was hired and a new chamber president too. It was a time of hope and promise and Old School Square was at the forefront of civic endeavors charged with being a catalyst for downtown revitalization. Two years after I met Joe. He became President of Old School Square. By 1993, he was in charge of our first bid for an All America City Award, and when I say he was in charge, he was in charge. Joe managed every detail using his theatre background to craft a presentation that literally blew the judges in Tampa away. I recently found archival footage of that event and it was remarkable to see our diversity and spirit in action— and it was remarkable to see Joe’s leadership at its most impactful. He incorporated young and old, black and white, east and west into a team. In baseball 76 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

they call it clubhouse chemistry; that intangible that makes champions. Joe was the architect of that chemistry and the vehicle was the All America City Competition. When you view the footage from that event, you see a young Mayor Tom Lynch, civic giants like C. Spencer Pompey, dedicated city staff like Lula Butler and Dorothy Ellington, residents like John Tallentire and Sandra Almy and you just marvel at the energy, spirit, humor and camaraderie. There was trust among neighbors, people loved their city and trusted their local government enough to go millions of dollars in debt in order to achieve a vision. Old School Square itself was a big risk, and you can see in founder Frances Bourque’s eyes her trust and belief in a young Joe Gillie to pull off a vision, that if successful, would mark a huge turning point in the city’s rich history. In hindsight, winning that first All America City Award was the propellant we needed as a community to tell the world that things in Delray were changing and we were serious about lifting up all parts of our community. Joe Gillie was at the forefront of those efforts. He, along with many others, helped to win two All America City Awards and we became the first city in Florida to do so. But Joe was our captain. In Joe, we trusted. He kept this city focused, laughing and moving forward through good times and challenging times. Joe was a different kind of leader. He wasn’t walled off in some office, he could be found in the trenches, usually with a broom in those early days, but always with a larger than life personality that greeted patrons, promoted shows,

Joe gillie

programs and classes and always talked up the larger goal which was building community through culture. We hear, often, how people are replaceable. How no one person is larger than the mission or more important than the enterprise. Part of that old saw is true, except that people are not replaceable. There will be people who serve as President of what is now called the Delray Center for the Arts and hopefully they will do a great job in the role. But there will never be another Joe Gillie. He’s an original; a Delray original by way of Virginia. In August, I attended a surprise party for Joe at Smoke. It’s not easy to surprise Joe, but it happened. Many of his friends were there and it was a wonderful night, full of memories and laughs, but with Joe in the room there is always talk about the future. Joe is departing from his role, but he’s not retiring. He’s a creative force and creative beings don’t stop inventing and innovating. He will act. He will sing. He will write. He will paint and he will continue to be a vibrant and positive force in our community.

Family Promise

Helping Families Get Back On Their Feet By LINDA BROWN

{

October is National Family Promise month. While that fact is not widely known, the Family Promise movement is an important one and Delray Beach is at the forefront with a small but wonderful organization called Family Promise of South Palm Beach County leading the way.

The organization, with a small but dedicated staff, board and volunteers, is doing yeoman’s work helping families facing adversity get back on their feet. Family Promise of South Palm Beach County works with a network of churches, support agencies, donors and volunteers in Delray Beach and Boca Raton. “We are always seeking volunteers and donors,” says Gary Rosen, a Delray real estate professional who is on the organization’s board. “Family Promise is a wonderful organization that provides real value to families.” What attracts donors and volunteers is the holistic philosophy of the organization. Rather than provide temporary assistance and a hand out, the organization works to stabilize families and offers assistance with job hunting, child care, interviewing skills and any other issues that might prevent a sustainable return to a safe and secure lifestyle. The organization is beginning to gain a lot of traction in the community and uti-

lizes very unique outreach strategies to cultivate support and understanding for the mission. Executive Director Michael Diamant holds frequent community lunches with prominent residents and business leaders in an effort to educate them about the mission. The lunches are not fundraisers, but awareness raisers, allowing key players to understand and engage with the mission. So far, the efforts are paying off. The Delray Beach Initiative, a group that raises money for local charities is one local group that has embraced Family Promise’s mission. The Initiative, founded by Chuck Halberg, owner of Stuart and Shelby Development, held a “Back to Woodstock” event this spring that attracted over 200 people and raised thousands for Family Promise. The basic philosophy of Family Promise is simple: the organization believes that every child deserves a home, a stable home. Family Promise of South Palm Beach County transitions families experiencing homelessness to sustainable independence and financial stability. Family Promise of South Palm Beach County is an interfaith organization that depends on 1,200 active volunteers representing 19 congregations to accomplish its objectives of providing temporary shelter, food, financial management training, family counseling, and access to transportation, educational scholarship funding and a formal long-term mentoring program to

ensure successful life transitions for its clients. The Family Promise movement is growing and is now in 42 states and has 188 affiliates. Being an affiliate of Family Promise guarantees a considerable and growing national presence, as well as an experienced staff of specialists to assist with training, strategic planning, conflict resolution and to provide continuing resources for development. The local affiliate serving Delray and Boca receives support from several Delray congregations including: St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, which provides housing, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cason United Methodist Church, Church of the Palms, First Presbyterian of Delray Beach and Temple Sinai. Congregations provide food, hospitality, and lodging to the families in the program. At any one time, there are at most four guest families and no more than 14 people in the program. The intimacy of the program allows services to be tailored to ensure that families get back on the path to stability as quickly as possible. TERRA SPERO Leader – Social Media Maven – Mentor By Diane Feen

{

Photos by melissa korman

Terra Spero came into this world on a high note. Her birthday is on Christmas Day and the gifts she received on that auspicious occasion have made her one of the most respected social media experts in the country.

But it’s not just her wisdom in the wired world that has garnered her a reputation presidential hopefuls would slay a dragon for. “Terra is an amazing person – she’s startling impressive, astonishing and after spending time getting to know her, you walk away wondering where she came from and why there aren’t more people like her,” said Jeffrey Lynne, a partner at Weiner, Lynne & Thompson, P.A. To answer Lynne’s question – Spero is from Elmira, New York and comes from very humble beginnings. Quite the opposite of what one would think after meeting this blond beauty with the piercing green eyes. Spero attended Corning Community College in New York and after two years found herself dreaming about palm trees and sunshine, not six-foot snow drifts (that catapulted her from Elmira to Ft. Lauderdale). After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Nova Southeastern University (where she was a presidential ambassador) she earned a Master’s Degree from Barry University. Spero’s first job after graduation was with an International Retail Services Company in West Palm Beach – and it was here that her talent was recognized and rewarded. “When I was 22-years-old I was hired to be the recruiter for this organization. When I got there they had a huge turnover rate, and within four months I reduced it by over 100 percent. For five years I worked in many departments until I ultimately landed in Marketing. The COO realized I have the ability to analyze a situation, come up with a solution and then fix it.” This talent has been the force behind the wind that moves Spero forward in her career, community involvement, volunteer work and family life. She’s been married to Tom Spero for ten years, has two talented children (nine-year-old Zachary and seven-year-old Jackson) and is the CEO and co-founder of RealTime Marketing Group. But that’s only the moniker on her website. Spero is also a community prodigy who is on the Executive

October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Board of the Chamber of Commerce (formally the communications chair and now the events chair), the Achievement Center for Children & Families Foundation Board, Dare 2 Be Great, and the past Vice-Chair for the Site Plan Review and Appearance Board. As Delray Beach’s first social media marketing agency Spero has spread her digital wings and become a social media superstar. She speaks at local and national conferences such as the Social Media Strategies Summit, the International Downtown Association, the DMA, FFEA, and IFEA. She has conducted workshops for U.S. Bank, Keds, J.M. Smucker Co, Department of Defense, PayPal, AARP, Wet ‘n Wild Orlando, Costco, CVS and the USGA. But, there is one award that comes close to her orbit quite often but hasn’t landed on her digital doorstep – yet. “I have been a finalist for Business Person of the Year in Delray for the past four years but haven’t won. I’m the Susan Lucci of this award,” said Spero, who admits it is an honor just to be a finalist for this prestigious local award. Spero is also deeply committed to her family – and credits her husband Tom with enabling her to devote so much time to the community and her career. But one realizes after meeting her that her extended family is really the entire city of Delray Beach. “I am passionate about Delray and love the fact that it’s like a small town where everyone knows your name. It is important to me that my children grow up in a community where they have to hold themselves to a higher standard of accountability because of that.” It seems that Spero has set goals for her children that she herself has accomplished majestically. “Terra is bright, creative and sensitive. She’s a good person who gives her all to the things she loves - her family, her clients and her community,” said former mayor Jeff Perlman. Others agree. “Everything Terra does is with fervor

and when she commits – it’s one hundred percent. She truly cares about our community and is not afraid to challenge the status quo often bringing a new perspective,” said Stephanie Seibel, CEO Achievement Centers for Children & Families. If the name Terra Spero doesn’t ring a bell, that’s because she is a quiet force behind many a great endeavor. Her digital media agency focuses on creating the voice behind local businesses and municipalities. She has worked to digitalize and magnify the presence of cities such as Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Pompano Beach and Dania – winning awards along the way.

Some call her a thought leader – others know she’s a galaxy made up of moving parts that change to meet the digital tide. “Terra is one of the most intelligent and talented young women I have met. With her social media expertise she continues to take our events to the next level,” said Nancy Stewart-Franczak, Executive Director of Festival Management Group. But Spero’s presence in many of these endeavors is quite ethereal – like that of a puppet master. “We are behind the scenes as much as possible. People want to connect with people – not an agency.” To know Spero is to know that she is pas-

sionate about everything that passes her gaze. When her son Zachary was a baby she put a video of him dancing on YouTube and it garnered a half million viewers. After posting one of him eating a pickle, the Oprah Network called. “That’s when my husband said I should get a job instead of making our child a project.” There are a lot of people that are thrilled that Spero has directed her brilliance and steely determination outward. Lynne is one of them. “Terra is a community leader whose passion is to make life better for every citizen of Delray. She doesn’t lead by demand. You simply want to follow her.” www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | October 2015

Thai Food To Dream About

HOUSE OF SIAM By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

tuna orange salad

Thai food is by nature a whirlwind of flavors and spices that take you on a journey to the unknown. Luckily owner Pian has the master plan all figured out before you even utter a word.

That’s why I let her be my culinary concierge in hopes that there might be a hidden recipe or entrée that had eluded my senses and my palette. Forever a creature of habit – ordering the House of Siam House Sizzler - has made me a very happy customer for many years. Not to be controlling or unyielding I decided to let Pian send over what she deemed officially the best food coming out of the kitchen. And to my delight I was ecstatic about her choices. I made up my mind that this meal would be a revelatory experience with tastes and flavors of the unknown. It would be a day of change – a respite from the mold permeating my premises (and my nasal passages). First up was a sushi dish that was new to me – but not to regulars Larry and Beverley of West Delray Beach. The name is simply 92

shrimp drunken noodle

Tuna Wanton but its order in the hierarchy of sushi was masterful. The fresh sushi (supremely fresh) was served on a crispy wanton with tempura flakes and a sweet glaze. The combination of textures and tastes made it a must try on your next trip to this neighborhood restaurant. Next up was Miso Yaki Salmon that came with a side of veggies and a sweet and sour sauce. After eating salmon at other restaurants that tasted like it was fished from the East River in NYC, this salmon was superb. It was so fresh that it felt like it swam its way to my table. It was not frozen or leftover from last week’s menu. At prices as reasonable as these it’s hard to find salmon this good. It was flakey (like you want your fish but not your friends) and had a tenderness to savor (in ecstasy). This dish is real a winner - take my word for it. Another surprise was one of the specials of the day – Chicken with a peanut sauce with broccoli, pea pods and carrots. The sauce was tangy and sweet with a light peanut flavor that enticed my senses into an unknown realm. It was a far cry from the thick heavy peanut sauce that adorns this dish at other restaurants. Pian and Patrick have a talent and passion for creating dishes from their native land. That’s why art dealer Mirek comes from Palm Beach to indulge his senses and culinary longing for Thai food at House of Siam. “I love it here, the food is excellent. I order the crispy duck - and at these prices you can’t beat the service - and the food is always fresh,” said the distinguished gentleman with the mane of silver hair sitting at the outdoor courtyard of House of Siam. For romance or natures effulgence the outside patio can cure whatever ails you. Larry and Beverly enjoy House of Siam so much they come a few times a month. Beverly could not stop raving about the special eggplant with basil and pork (and added you can get any protein you want). Larry is smitten with the crispy duck and fresh veggies, and also loves the drunken noodles. As he sat courtyard with the House of Siam Volcano Sizzler with shrimp I experienced a bit of Sizzler envy. Because everyone (including me) knows that their sizzler dishes are made with special sauces and served piping hot at your table. The House of Siam has been in business in Pineapple Grove for the past 16 years for good reason. They serve fresh food, homemade and delicately balanced with herbs and spices that don’t overwhelm the dishes

salmon misoyaki

Beef Oyster with asparagus

or the diner. They have vegetarian and gluten free meals and cater to their customer’s desires and medical challenges. If you have food allergies – or like your food on the milder side – all you have to do is ask. They will prepare your food just the way you like it. “When we left Thailand we searched for an authentic Thai restaurant that would capture the flavors and tastes of the rich culture we left behind. We couldn’t find such a place, so we created one,” said coowner Pian, who is always beautifully dressed in authentic Thai dresses. Both Pian and Patrick’s dedication to excellence makes the food at House of Siam like a buried treasure unearthed. Some of the most popular dishes in the Thai tradition are Young Coconut Curry, House sizzler or Volcano Sizzler, Pad Thai, Green coconut Curry served in a coconut, Shrimp and Chicken Dumplings and Spring Rolls. Where else can you get a dish brought to your table sizzling hot (with chicken, beef,

Sticky rice with Mango

pork or tofu) with stir fried cucumbers, onion, bell pepper, cashew nuts, fresh spinach and topped in a delicious peanut sauce? After years of success in their quiet courtyard they added a sushi bar and fresh sushi to the menu. And we’re glad they did. Their sushi selection is of the highest quality and can be sassed up with tasty citrus and spices. The “Sushi Boat for One” is a sushi lover’s paradise. Served in a large wooden ship it has sushi and sashimi with a California roll that looks so fresh it might have just docked nearby. A meal at House of Siam is a wonderful trip to exotic places and spaces that will tantalize your senses. The food is fresh and masterfully prepared with a myriad of mystical flavors that will definitely uplift your mood and peak your culinary desires. The True Scoop on Poop and Vomit

T

here is probably no greater discussion pet owners have with one another than that of their pet’s poop. On every pet chat online, at the dog park, and at any pet friendly event, stories about poop are prevalent. You may ask, “Why so much poop talk?” Well, the basic underlying reason is most pet owners use it to judge their pet’s health conditions. Everyone is seeking a perfect bowel movement. If the poop is the wrong color, size, consistency, off schedule, contains blood or mucous or deviates in any other way, we are led to believe there is a problem. Is it really a problem or even a true indicator of poor health or illness? Is there actually a perfect poop? While our visual perception of our pet’s stool is important, we must also understand the reason it varies or remains the same. Realistically, all types of poop are perfect! The reason is because without the act of excretion, all creatures would not survive. Feces or poop, is a combination of all kinds of metabolic debris derived from indigestible foods, dead and diseased cellular matter and mucous as well as components of other ingested material that is not required by the body. Just as our trash bags will vary

in content from day to day, month to month and year to year, feces will vary in the same manner. Because of this, poop’s consistency is not a measure of our pet’s health but of the condition of the body. Similarly, we all need to understand that the act of vomiting and diarrhea are nothing more than the body purging itself of unwanted or potentially harmful substances in an express fashion. These actions are an event and not normally a “condition.” Our alarm and focus needs to be on what is the cause of this sudden and abrupt purge. We tend to look at the food first, however we need to understand that the food is only the vehicle for removing the problem. Our pets come into contact with hundreds of toxins every day and the body must defend against them. Many people also feed their pets inappropriate foods laced with chemicals and indigestible, harmful ingredients. They are exposed to toxins and poisons in the form of insecticides, vermicides, and drugs that pets must cleanse from their bodies. The makers of these products often add chemicals that will disguise or prevent the body from rejecting these products, thereby resulting in the purging to be even more explosive when it does occur thus creating an

illusion of a very unhealthy pet. The medical approach is the opposite of what our pets require. Their bodies simply need to expel these assaulting compounds. Unfortunately, they are generally treated by trying to prevent the body from doing this with even more unnatural chemicals. Diagnosticians never look at what the actual cause could be. Common sense would tell us that clean, uncontaminated, minimally processed species appropriate foods can only benefit our pets and our own bodies as well. While no one likes to clean up vomit or diarrhea, making the stool unnaturally hard to facilitate clean up is unhealthy. Understanding the true physiological nature of our pets is paramount and should be respected to maintain optimal health. So next time your pet has an accident, feel relieved that the bad stuff is out and cannot now cause a liver, kidney or cancer disease. ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card

Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

By Stephen Chrisanthus

Photo by Norman Karl Garrett Photography

Delray Beach is known for hosting great events and some of the largest and longest running are put on through the Chamber of Commerce. Events like the Delray Beach Wine and Seafood Festival, and the Delray Affair which is the largest arts and crafts festival in the Southeast United States and will be celebrating its 54th anniversary this upcoming year. But these events couldn’t be possible without an all-star cast of volunteers, and Krug Kruger, Dean Fesette, Allison Good, and Jennifer Aracri are definitely the super heroes of volunteering. All year they show up rain or shine, working long hours on some of South Florida’s hottest days to make sure these events run smooth and everybody who attends has a safe and fun experience. These tireless, passionate people are the kind of individuals that make Delray Beach the amazing community it is. Working along-side them is rewarding, and getting to know them is even better.

He Said/She Said:

Internet Dating Part 2 (of 312...lol) By Robert V and Marie T Internet Dating gives us soooo much material to discuss. Many bottles of wine have been consumed by He and She while sharing (often times hysterical) stories - both from personal experience and friends’ nightmare dates. Here are some complaints from He with a rebuttal from She.

He Said:

So, I have been doing a lot of searching on the internet trying to come up with raw data to support my arguments to follow. I finally gave up and had a beer, but here goes anyway. From a man’s perspective: 1. Women lie about their age and weight more than men do. Think about it, no woman ever lets you know her age unless you are putting her on your insurance plan and then, it’s only begrudgingly. Also, the only people I ever see step on to the scales at Publix are men. Knowing these things, why would we ever expect a woman we don’t even know to give us accurate information? Shame on us for believing what someone tells you about themselves. For the record, I don’t know how you ladies walk around in 20 lb shoes as you claim when we accidently see the numbers on the scale you are on. 2. Every woman wants respect, old fashioned values and clean cut. It’s like it is cut and pasted onto the first three lines of every online profile. If that’s true, why do I see the unshaved, tattooed up, loser, borderline homeless bad boys with all my attractive female friends? What is the allure? The challenge? The edginess? Is it the potential for you to become the reason for a parole violation or a Jerry Springer episode? Sheesh! 3. Women want to be equals, yet would never offer to help pay the check at the first meeting. I’m as chivalrous as the next guy, but I have consciously waited long periods of time to see if I would get even a perfunctory offer. You meet a woman on line and she throws around the words “partner” and “equal” in her profile, yet she would never even think to offer to split the tab, much less pay the whole thing. For the record, I would 106 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

never ask or even let a lady pay the tab, but a disingenuous offer now and then would be refreshing. 4. No, you can’t have my real name so that you can put me on that secret, dating black-ball list that all women seem to have access to. I’m just saying what all sane men who use their real names would say if given the cloak of anonymity.

She Said:

This is going to be FUN! I’m already laughing...here’s this woman’s perspective: 1. Men lie just as much as women do (on their dating profiles)! We women sometimes “disguise” our age and weight because of how superficial men are! How many dating profiles of 50+ year old men say they are seeking 21-35 year old women?! ALMOST ALL OF THEM! It seems (almost) every quasi-normal eligible bachelor at ANY age only wants to date a tiny model type woman that could be their daughter (ewww, yes - I went there). Also, how many men call themselves “athletic and toned” and then proceed to post photos that are 10-15 ago? Yeah. Lots! 2. Every woman does want respect! Men should want respect too. Some women are attracted to a “Bad Boy” type man, but does

that mean that those men are disrespectful? There may be an allure to some women (I’m not speaking for myself, though), but maybe - just maybe - these women friends of yours (He) are with those men because they are the ONLY men to ask them out! Have you considered that? And who doesn’t want a shot at Springer? (Just kidding on Springer... no one should aspire to be on that circus disguised as a talk show) 3. Now we tackle the equality issue. I definitely do NOT want to be treated equal! I want to be treated BETTER than you!!! LOL ok, I’m kidding. (No, I’m not.) I never expect a man to pay the bill - especially on the first few “getting to know you” dates. I’ve always offered to go Dutch and if denied, I offer to leave the tip. And I’ve done so genuinely. Thankfully I’ve never been taken up on either. Chivalry is not dead. Thank goodness. 4. No, you cannot have my real name - yet. Or access to 25 photos on ANY site. Once we meet, I will come clean - but if I don’t know you, why should you have access to (most of) my life (thanks Google/ Facebook), my kids, my friends, etc? After we meet, all bets are off. That seems fair to me. It’s not that I have something to hide, it’s that I have something to protect.

If at all possible, don’t miss the HBO mini-series “Show Me A Hero.”

{

It was incredible. Great acting, great writing and a subject that is as relevant today as it was when the series took place 30 years ago.

For those who missed it, “Show Me A Hero” is based on a famous housing case in Yonkers, N.Y. in the 1980s. A judge ruled that Yonkers needed to allow an additional 200 units of public housing throughout the city in an effort to stop the concentration of poverty and integrate a highly segregated city. The City of Yonkers fought and fought and fought the decree, creating controversy, racial tension, financial and human hardship. The units were eventually built and were considered a success. The widespread fears of “there goes the neighborhood” were unrealized but the debate took a toll on residents on all sides of the issue. The series is also the story of Nick Wasicsko, the 28-year-old mayor of Yonkers who first got elected by supporting residents who fought the expansion of public housing and then over time changed his position. What’s intriguing about Mayor Wasicsko is that he changed over time and by degrees—a very human evolution. At first, he agreed to the expansion of housing because the city kept losing in the legal arena and it was bleeding the city financially and spiritually. As an attorney, Wasiscko knew the fight was futile and as a pragmatist he wanted to stop the bleeding. But over time, he became a believer and genuinely wanted to help people escape the crushing poverty, crime and violence of the projects. He was named a finalist for a JFK Profile in Courage Award as a result. Along the way, he lost his seat as mayor. He later won a council seat and then lost a political battle with the new mayor who 110 October 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

redrew his district forcing him into a losing battle against his former best friend for a seat. Wasiscko committed suicide at the age of 34. The final part of the quote “Show Me A Hero” is “and I will write you a tragedy”. That phrase was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and sadly, that is often true. What made me “Show Me a Hero” so intriguing was that it’s heroes were not perfect people, but real human beings struggling with public sentiment, old prejudices, anger and doubt. We’ve been through a long year in terms

of race relations in this country. Ferguson, Baltimore, Staten Island—we’ve all seen the headlines and watched the news. We are not immune.
