s we head into the final three months of the year, we hope you’ll take some time to enjoy all that Delray has to offer before “season” kicks into high gear. We’ve noticed that even in summer and early fall, the streets and restaurants are full of life and for this we should be grateful. Delray Beach’s business owners and leadership have labored long and hard to create a year-round economy and to encourage people to shop, dine and patronize local service providers. It has been an amazing ride to see the evolution of the city and to see growth and investment continue west and south. Last month, I had a wonderful opportunity to have lunch on the Intracoastal with the legendary Elizabeth “Libby” Wesley, who recently had a plaza named in her honor on West Atlantic Avenue. Ms. Wesley is a community icon, a retired educator and Roots Festival founder, who has been called the mother of Delray. She is one of the most wonderful people in the world and she has taught much to so many. So when Joe Gillie, the President of the Delray Center for the Arts, called and said lunch was on, I was thrilled to share precious time with someone who has taught me so much over the years. We were joined by Ms. Wesley’s brother and sisters, son and grandson and the conversation covered the gamut from health care (her son is a vascular surgeon) and Malcolm Gladwell to family and of course Delray. Ms. Wesley came to the city in the 50s. Her brother, Rev. John Jackson came in the early 80s and her son Dr. John Wesley graduated from Atlantic High in the mid 80s. This family has seen and affected a whole lot of change. Most of what they have seen has been good. Some of it, not so good. That’s life; we decided. But we also concluded that community is about relationships; ties, friendships, family, love and commitment to a place. When I used to meet at City Hall with Mrs. Wesley she talked to me about a covenant; a bond, an agreement a pact made between people who want to see a city thrive so that all people could share in its charms. Whether it’s a job or a chance to go medical school or a place to experience art; community has to work for all if it is to work at all. Enjoy the September issue…. Jeff Perlman, Editor

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.

rab your putter and kiss your mother because we’re going head first into the wilderness. September is National Wilderness Month and instead of getting (golf) balls deep in the Everglades or the Atlantic Ocean, head to your local putt palace and party hardy without the lions and tigers and bears, oh my. Putt’n Around is the only putt putt golf haven in Delray and is by far the most fun. Putt’n Around features two courses: The Ever-

glades, where you’ll come so close to alligators and manatees that you’ll practically high five them; and, The Ocean, where you’ll become best friends with a mermaid or a family of sailfish. This little oasis features not only 36 hardcore holes of golf for your putting pleasure, but also an award winning botanical garden, sports bar, music, holeside tasty beverage delivery, and a menu complete with personal pizzas, cheesestuffed pretzels (say what), sandwiches and hot dogs, and not to mention beer, wine and cider. Pricing starts at $9.85 for 18 holes, but there are always specials, including a local’s discount of $2 off per round (with Florida ID). I agree with their motto, “You can never go wrong with a little miniature golf,” and look forward to getting a fierce hole in one with my main squeeze. Putt’n Around is located at 350 N.E. Fifth Ave. Visit www.puttnaround. net or call (561) 459-2715.

i, Self. Who are you? September is International Self-Awareness Month and I am willing to bet my winning scratch-off games that you haven’t really delved deep into the innards of your Self and figured out who you are, what you want, and how happy you are in your daily travels. If you need a backdrop for which to achieve this catalyst of enlight-

enment, head to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, which is a mecca of meditative moods and insight. To make the journey a little more fun, head to Morikami on September 12 for the last Sushi & Stroll Summer Walk of the summer and enjoy a beautiful setting for a beautiful awakening. Held 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the event features not only perfect timing for a breathtaking sunset but also a tranquil garden for your mind and feet to wander, and a taiko drum performance to inspire your synapses to fire. Sip craft sake for $5 and enjoy a California roll for $5 or a seaweed salad for $4, and relish the sound of the trees, the feel of the breeze and the smell of your self-awareness taking shape. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children when purchased in advance, and the taiko drum performance is an additional $2 per person. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road. Visit www.morikami.org or call (561) 495-0233 for more information.

re you feeling hot, hot, hot? Even though we live on a peninsula nestled sweatingly in the tropics, Florida is technically not the Caribbean. But, don’t fret, my Island friends, as I’ve got your one-way ticket to a party, “mon”. September is Superior Relationships Month and this is your formal invitation to have a superior relationship with the water, the sunset and the Island vibes (significant other welcome, but not necessary). If you haven’t yet jumped aboard the Lady Atlantic or the Lady Delray for some nautical fun, grab your floral shirt and jam-

min’ attitude because it’s about to get all local up in here. The Steel Drum Cruise departs Thursday, September 11 and 25 and in the two-hour ride you’ll be privy to not only some in-depth knowledge about the surrounding area but also some fine-tune, first class party jams. The cruise is held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and costs $25 per person. You may also purchase special cocktails and food, both of which are highly recommended by yours truly. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to bang on the drums all day. Delray Yacht Cruises is located at Atlantic Avenue and the Intracoastal. Visit www.delraybeachcruises.com or call (561) 243-0686 for more information.

S

o, I’m turning 30 this month. I’d prefer not to talk about it, but, I’d also like to party! Hey, I made it this far, so let’s bring on the good voodoo and continue the ride. September is Healthy Aging Month and in addition to my ritual of applying facial cream and drinking water to keep the skin looking teenage-style, I also chock it up to copious amounts of good wine and better food. If you’re looking for a deal for a celebration (just let me know and I’ll show up), head to the Atlantic Grille for a prix fixe menu. Enjoy a three-course dinner for two, plus a bottle of wine, from a seasonally inspired menu for $33 per person. The menu changes monthly but last month the menu included a grilled avocado with baby shrimp salsa with corn, black beans, cilantro and pineapple; pan-roasted cod with Asian vegetables, jasmine rice and a citrus soy sauce; and a sea salt caramel cheesecake with vanilla bean ice cream. Wash that down with a delicious bottle of wine and it’s a very happy birthday to my belly. If you’re feeling frisky (have we met?), belly up to the bar for a little happy hour action from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and get a head start on the food and libation fiesta. The prix fixe menu is available Sunday through Thursday through the end of September and does not include tax and gratuity. The Atlantic Grille is located in The Seagate Hotel at 1000 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www. theatlanticgrille.com or call (561) 665-4900 for more information and September menu offerings.

C

alling all ye readers who love the brew! Put down the pint and grab a pen to write this down: Brewery tour. Bus. Beer. Bros. Bodacious. September is International Strategic Thinking Month and if you like to enjoy a pint or seven like me, you need to have a poa (plan of attack) for how you’re safely going to get around. The good folks at the Wine Wave have coordinated a Brew Bus Brewery Tour on September 20 and this is your ticket to a VIP tour of three local breweries including Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton, The Funky Buddha Brewery in Boca and SaltWater Brewery in Delray. A $50 ticket price includes a tour at each facility and your first pint at each brewery, too. The fun doesn’t stop there, my friends, as the bus is also fully stocked with complimentary water and Brew Bus Brewery beers to enjoy by everyone in between the stops. So you mean I don’t have to worry about driving and I get to have an amazing time? This makes me so hoppy. The bus is limited to 20 people so I would recommend getting your tickets asap or else you might miss out on one of the most strategically planned events this summer. The event takes place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. so you have time for a nap or continued partying afterward. The Wine Wave is located at 900 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.thewinewave. com or call (561) 276-2076 for more information and to reserve your tickets.

A case of

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

treatment-resistant depression

The first thing I noticed about Annette when she came

Hypothyroidism is one classic cause of depression.

to my office was the way she walked. Her hand would periodically touch the walls of the hallway, as if she wasn’t sure of her balance. I soon found out, she wasn’t really sure of anything. “I’ve been depressed pretty much my whole life. It’s just that it’s gotten worse lately.” Annette continued, “My doctor changed my meds last December to a combination of Lexapro and Abilify but I still feel down.” “Two out of three people treated for depression still have depressive symptoms. They call it treatment-resistant depression, and drugs such Abilify are often added, to augment the effects of antidepressants. Unfortunately, they have side effects.” “You’re telling me! Before this I was on Symbyax and I gained nine pounds in three weeks! Despite dieting for forever, I still haven’t lost that weight.”1 “Abilify and Symbyax both can cause weight gain and diabetes. And since you aren’t getting that great of a response from them, perhaps we should look elsewhere. Perhaps we can fix your depression and help you lose weight at the same time.” “My psychiatrist sent me here because she wants you to look at my thyroid. Do you think that could be it?” “Though it is possible to ‘just be depressed’, I tend to think there is some specific cause. Hypothyroidism is one classic cause of depression, and thyroid medicines have been used quite effectively to improve mood and energy.”2 “I really hope it is my thyroid. That would fix a lot of my problems, even my weight.” “Your thyroid isn’t the only thing I want to look at though. The way you wobbled down the hallway makes me wonder if you are low in vitamin D. Deficiencies of that vitamin lead to poor coordination and balance.” “But we live in Florida. Don’t I get enough vitamin D from the sun?” “Unfortunately, no. Even in Boca Raton, I’ve seen many patients with insufficient vitamin D, and vitamin D deficiency is yet another cause of treatment-resistant depression and weight gain.”3 I finished my physical exam. “Within a few weeks, your blood tests for thyroid and vitamin D will be back. Until that happens, however, I think we should try some high-dose vitamin D supplements. Though we are going to use doses far higher than a multivitamin, it is extremely safe with no side effects.” Annette’s vitamin D level was indeed low, and at her follow up visit, she was already feeling significantly better. “As your psychiatrist suspected, your test for thyroid antibodies was positive. You also have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.” “So what does that mean?” “Thyroid antibodies interfere with the ability of other thyroid lab tests to detect which patients will respond to thyroid medication.

Even though your TSH test was within the normal range, you probably would respond well to thyroid medication.”4 The combination of vitamin D and thyroid hormone seemed to do the trick. Annette’s mood improved to the point where she had desire to do things again. And no longer on the Abilify, the weight was far easier to lose. “I’m playing tennis again, and honestly, I think that extra vitamin D is helping my tennis serve too!” REFERENCES: [1] Callan JA. September 5 Writer-director Eli Roth (“Hostel” “Cabin Fever”) sends a group of New York City students to the wildest, deepest part of the Amazon in “The Green Inferno.” The group is trying to study and protect a cannibal tribe, but the title indicates maybe something goes wrong. The victims- er cast- are Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton and Magda Apanowicz.

September 10 All movie release dates are subject to change. Here’s hoping this one pulls though. “My Old Lady” stars Kevin Kline as a down-and-out Jewish New Yorker who travels to Paris to liquidate the lavish apartment his late, estranged father owned. He finds an old lady named Mathilde (Maggie Smith) living there with her daughter. Playwright Israel Horovitz, a frequent visitor to Delray Beach Arts Garage, is

Tina Fey

listed as writer-director and the cast includes Jane Birkin and Kristin Scott Thomas.

September 12 Terri (Taraji P. Henson) is a former DA turned stay-at-home Atlanta mom and mother of two who unwisely lets a man claiming to have car trouble into her house to use her phone in “No Good Deed.” Colin (Idris Elba) is good-looking and charming but is an escaped convict in this thriller written by Aimee Lagos (“96 Minutes”) and directed by Sam Miller. If you never tire of Dolphins, you’ll probably like “Dolphin Tale 2,” directed again by Charles Martin Smith. The human cast is pretty good too. Morgan Freeman returns as Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who designed a prosthetic tail for an injured Dolphin named Winter. Others at Clearwater Marine Hospital are Kris Kristofferson, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick, Jr. and Nathan Gamble returning as Sawyer Nelson. “Search Party” is an R-rated comedy written and directed by Scott Armstrong (“Zookeeper”). Friends Evan (Adam Pally) and Jason (T.J. Miller) try to reunite their friend Nardo (Thomas Middleditch) with his runaway fiancée (Shannon Marie Woodward) after he is carjacked and left naked and broke in Mexico.

September 19 “The Maze Runner” is based on the first book of a trilogy of the same name by James Dashner. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) awakes in a massive maze with a group of friends, unaware how they got there. The only clue is the letters W.C.K.D. Will Poulter, Thomas Sangster, Blake Cooper, Kaya Scodelanio and Ami Ameen co-star. Just a relaxing “Walk Amongst the Tombstones.” Maybe not. Liam Neeson stars as ex NYPD-turned unlicensed private investigator Matt Scudder in what promises to be the first of a series, since novelist Lawrence Block wrote 17 Matt Scudder crime novels. Dan Stevens is a heroin trafficker, Scudder agrees to help find the murderer of his wife. The duo discovers it is not the first such crime. David Harbour, Mark

Consuelos, Astro and Ruth Wilson costar and Scott Frank (“The Lookout”) directs. Welcome Home. Get Uncomfortable. Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver and Cory Stoll play siblings who are forced to live together under one roof when their father dies in “This is Where I Leave You,” directed by Shawn Levy (“The Internship”). The screenplay is based on the novel by Jonathan Tropper and Rose Byrne and Abigail Spencer co-star. Simon Pegg stars as the title character in “Hector and the Search for Happiness,” which is billed as a drama, but knowing Pegg’s comedic prowess, could have some wry laughs. Director Peter Chelsom (“Shall We Dance?”) has assembled an admirable cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Stellan Skarsgaard, Toni Collette, Jean Reno and Christopher Plummer. Maria von Heland (“Big Girls Don’t Cry”) co-wrote the script with Chelsom.

September 26 Denzel Washington is back in “The Equalizer.” Washington is an ex-government operative who tries to live an ordinary life as a Home Depot employee. But when he helps out a prostitute (Chloe Moretz) the Russian mafia steps in to cause trouble. Antoine Fuqua (“Olympus Has Fallen”) directs a cast that includes Davis Meuvier, Melissa Leo, Holly Bennett and Martin Csokas as the chief bad guy. “The Boxtrolls” is an animated adventure about an orphaned boy named Eggs (voice of Isaac Hemstead Wright) who is raised by underground creatures called Boxtrolls. The Boxtrolls roam the streets of Cheesebridge at night to steal children and fine cheeses. Ben Kingsley leads a vocal cast as villain and others are Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg and Jared Harris. Chick flick? Could be, “Laggies” stars Keira Knightly as Megan, a 28-year-old woman with no career, no job prospects and no motivation. When her high school boyfriend (Mark Webber) proposes, she hides with 16-year-old Annika (Chloe Moretz). Sam Rockwell plays Megan’s dad and Lynn Shelton (“Touchy-Feely”) directs.

Fibromyalgia...

Revolutionary advances in treatment protocols

{

By Dr. John Conde

Primary fibromyalgia syndrome (PFS) affects nearly 6 million people in the United States with a greater prevalence in women. The age groups typically affected are between 45 and 60 years of age. PFS was originally thought of as a by-product of clinical depression and was not deemed a valid diagnosis by the majority of physicians in the United States.

Due to the lack of understanding and because it resembles other disorders such as hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, arthritis, and infectious mononucleosis it was routinely misdiagnosed. Thanks to new, cutting edge research utilizing functional MRI and PET scans we now know that PFS is a true disorder taking on epidemic proportions in this country.

WHAT IS PFS AND HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? PFS is a disabling disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and stiffness described as aching, burning, throbbing, and shooting. The pain is typically greatest in the morning and in muscle groups that are used repetitively. Fatigue and sleep disturbances (stage 4) are also cardinal signs of this disorder. Associated symptoms may include irritable bowel and bladder, headaches and transformed migraines, restless leg syndrome, TMJ and face pain, numbness and tingling, impaired memory and concentration, dizziness, anxiety, and depression. According to the American College of Rheumatology, the criteria for diagnosis of PFS includes finding tenderness or pain in at least 11 of 18 specified tender points when pressure is applied. Widespread pain must also be experienced in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum of three months. WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF PFS? The human brain has inherent pain modulatory systems responsible for the suppres-

44 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

sion of pain transmission. Current research is pointing towards faulty brain processing as the causative agent of PFS. A study conducted by the National Institute of Health found that patients with PFS who were given relatively low levels of pressure seemed to experience the same amount of pain and subsequent brain activity as the control group which were given high levels of pressure. Due to this faulty brain processing the brain becomes very efficient at transmitting pain so that even a soft touch may produce a pounding sensation. Over time, an individual may experience pain even without a pain producing stimulus or injury.

BRAIN-BASED TREATMENT: The human brain is highly plastic (changeable). Sixty percent of the brain is genetically predetermined while forty percent is constantly changing according to environmental influences (work, home, exercise, food, etc.). We also know that our brain cells require oxygen, proper nutrients, and stimulation for optimal function. Understanding these concepts, neurophysiologic rehabilitation utilizes oxygen acquiring techniques, nutrition, and specific forms of stimulation (light, sound, touch, oculomotor exercises, onesided balance exercises, cognitive exercises, one- sided chiropractic adjustments) targeted to the under functioning brain regions. The goal is to restore proper function. Specifically pertaining to PFS, we have also

found that graded aerobic exercise and supplementation of malic acid, magnesium, and melatonin are highly effective. Dr. John Conde is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, one of only one thousand in the country. He holds diplomate status through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. He provides specialized care for difficult cases of back-neck pain, numbness-tingling, vertigo-dizziness balance disorders, fibromyalgia, migraines, AD/HD, autism, and dyslexia. Vanquish Your Imperfections

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

As summer fades in South Florida, the zest for diet, exercise and alluring shape only accelerates. “If I could just be one size smaller,” is not reserved for swimsuits. We are a people addicted to healthy, fit bodies and beautiful contours, and now, those of us who pine for any easy fix to love handles, muffin tops and man boobs have a resource that seems too good to be true.

The technology is called Vanquish, a completely non-invasive procedure to annihilate fat cells using radio frequency. Dermatology and Laser Medicine claim it as an enormous breakthrough. There is no surgery involved and no needles are required; in fact, the procedure is completely pain free. The machine never even touches the patient’s skin. Deep tissue heating without damaging skin or muscle effects measurable results in this FDA approved approach to the destruction of fat cells. Results can be seen after just four sessions of forty-five minutes each. Vanquish fat melting sessions are controlled and comfortable. The dermatologist will adjust the laser to hover over the areas of the body to be treated, never touching the machine to the skin. The heat produced from the laser will feel warm, never hot, and will resemble the sensation of a heating pad on the belly. Sensors built into the device “tune” the patient’s fat and customize the energy required for each patient’s treatment session. The science involved is simple. Once the fat cells have been overheated, they die off and are filtered through the lymphatic system, metabolized in the liver and then excreted through urine. For this process to be effective, patients are asked to drink plenty of water before and after the procedure, aiding in the elimination of dead fat. Some minimal redness may occur at the site of the procedure, but swelling is extremely unlikely.

46 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Patients are not reporting any contraindications. They are losing two to four inches after four treatments without changing their diets or increasing exercise. Of course there are skeptics, but the ease of delivery for Vanquish speaks bundles about its ability to please patients. Unlike the other fat buster technologies of the last thirty years, treatments don’t involve downtime or discomfort for the patient. Liposuction, while capable of eradicating larger volumes of fat, requires anesthesia and surgery and sometimes delivers uneven results. Ultrasound, in which a hand piece is moved around the body to destroy fat with deep-diving sound waves, generally requires pain medication. Cryotherapthy, which freezes fat cells, does work, but is a slow process for both the patient

and the technician and requires a significant time commitment. Vanquish, from all sides, seems to be the fat busting venue of the future. Vanquish is new, exciting and full of promise. Today it is eliminating beer bellies and love handles. Tomorrow it will reach to contour flabby arms and fatty necks. From the point of view of the dermatologist, this is very “cool” technology; from the point of view of the patient, this may be the hottest technique on the planet for looking good. Dr. Thomas C. Sometimes when treating lines and wrinkles, it is better to turn to magic…

{

By Kristin Heather

Microcurrent technology uses two magical wands to stimulate deep healing in the body. It can be used for a host of issues: pain, wounds, bone fractures, etc.

For the skin and the face, it is the ultimate tool in aging gracefully. It addresses internal challenges that affect our appearance as we age, ones that are not addressed with fillers or surgery. It is a treatment that actually targets the root of wrinkles. And, since it is completely relaxing, non-invasive, and yields incredible results, it is easily accepted as magical skin care. As we age, there are more and more factors that affect our appearance. Our skin takes the brunt of all of it. As the largest organ constantly working to protect and detoxify, the skin holds years of sun, pollution, and chemical exposure. It experiences decades of stress from internal blockages caused by acidic foods and a lack of antioxidants that results in free radicals in the body. Structurally, it shows the loss of volume in some key areas: bone density and muscle tone. The culmination of these factors reflects in our skin in a number of ways, but often as wrinkles, sagging, and uneven skin tone. Using small doses of electrical current (only one millionth of an ampere), microcurrent is applied to the face through two probes that cause only gentle tingling. It delivers an electrical current that mimics the body’s natural electricity, so small that it can penetrate a cell. When cells or tissues are damaged, they disrupt the flow of energy and electricity through the body. Electricity takes the path of least resistance, so if there is damage, it will move around that area, and essentially avoid healing it. This technology regulates the body’s electrical impulse, allowing the vibration of cells to increase, become more alive, and flow through any blockage, supporting healing at the cellular level. Lines and wrinkles are essen-

48 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

tially damaged skin, whether they are revealed due to external irritants, internal blockages, or deeper health issues. And, as we age and collagen production decreases (highly affected by those free radicals stealing necessary electrons from cells), damage becomes more apparent in our appearance. Microcurrent boosts ATP production causing an increase in cellular energy, which creates the optimal environment for deep healing as well as increased collagen production. Fine lines disappear; deep wrinkles decrease. As we age, muscles and bones become weaker. Our bones actually deteriorate as we continuously leach minerals from them due to a mostly acidic diet. In terms of sagging and a loss of that beautiful plumpness of youthful muscles, microcurrent creates the supreme atmosphere for rejuvenation. Since cells make up tissues, tissues make up muscles and bones, penetrating

and healing individual damaged cells simultaneously heals muscles and bones. A youthful facial structure is dependent on toned muscles and a strong bone structure. Each area will lose volume naturally as you age, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle will also add to the decline. Due to its ability to target deep into the skin, microcurrent is a fantastic tool for preventing sagging and wrinkles in younger adults. And, if you have had filler or surgery, and want to maintain or enhance the results, microcurrent not only supports the internal facial structure, but also treats any nerve damage. Truly, anyone can take advantage of microcurrent. Yet, it is important to make sure your skin care professional is using a quality microcurrent machine. Over stimulation of cells (meaning technology that uses too strong of a current) can be harmful. A series of quality treatments will address the full spectrum of skin health. And, it is cumulative. Facial muscles, bones, and skin tone will immediately improve with one treatment and continue to improve with a series. Maintenance after the initial series is simple: only one magical treatment every few months. As a forerunner in modern skin care services and anti-aging, Kristin founded Nourishe in Delray Beach and currently heads aesthetic science research and development. Kristin’s revolutionary approach to DNA Repair and her extensive training with some of the best professionals in the industry has made her the expert in healing and improving the skin naturally and holistically. Kristin created and holds exclusive rights to over 8 different treatments from DNA Repair to Oxy-Infusion to non-surgical face lifting techniques. 200 NE 2nd Ave #114 - Delray Beach, FL 33444 (561) 278-4144 - www. nourishemedispa.com

Is your diet causing tooth decay?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

What you eat and how often you eat are important factors for maintaining good oral health and overall health.

Overview When many people think “diet,” they think about what foods they can eat to help them cut calories and lose weight. But, there is more to eating than a slim waistline and it’s important to know that certain foods have a beneficial impact on your oral care. To prevent cavities and maintain good oral health, you must pay attention to not only what you eat but also how often you eat. Changes in your mouth start the minute you eat certain foods. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugars and carbohydrates from the foods you eat into acids and it’s these acids that begin to attack the enamel on teeth, thus starting the decay process. The more frequently you eat and snack, the more often you are exposing your teeth to the cycle of decay. When it comes to healthy teeth, we all know that it’s important to brush twice daily, floss at least once a day, and visit your dentist for cleanings every six months. In addition to this regimen, the easiest way to stay on top of your oral health is just to pay attention to what goes in your mouth. Chew on This A tooth’s worst enemy is acid, either directly contained in the food and drink or produced by oral bacteria that thrive on sugar and then convert it to acid. The mouth’s best friends are foods that neutralize acids and provide minerals and vitamins to repair tooth enamel and stimulate saliva. The best food choices for a healthy mouth include cheeses, chicken or other meats, nuts and milk. These foods are thought to protect the enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorous needed to remineralize teeth, which is a natural process by which minerals are redeposited in tooth enamel after being removed by acids. Additionally, calcium helps

50 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

protect your teeth against periodontal (gum) disease and keeps your teeth and jaw bone strong and healthy. Other great food choices include firm/ crunchy fruits (apples and pears) and vegetables (celery and carrots). These foods have a high water content, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain and also stimulates the flow of saliva. Saliva helps protect against decay by washing away food particles and buffering acid, kind of like acting as a detergent for your teeth. If you do eat acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and lemons, try to eat them as part of a larger meal to minimize the acid. Your teeth also benefit greatly from water. Water helps to wash away food debris and keeps your saliva levels high. Saliva is actually your mouth’s best defense against tooth decay because it contains proteins and minerals that counteract enamel-eating acids. Saliva consists of 95 percent water so if you want to avoid unnecessary cavities, do yourself a favor and stay hydrated. Oral Health and Overall Health Eating right can help you fend off plaque, periodontal disease and gingivitis, in addition to other serious health problems. Your

oral health might affect, be affected by, or contribute to various diseases and conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and more, so keeping a watchful eye is key to staying healthy. Brush and floss daily, visit your dentist regularly for cleanings, and be mindful of what foods and drinks you’re consuming. Sugary foods and drinks damage tooth enamel and promote decay, and if you do snack on sweets throughout the day, make sure you brush and floss afterward. Eat the foods that fortify your teeth and your overall health will thank you. Summer has come to an end and school has started back up. For most moms this time can be very stressful and hectic. The daily schedule often consists of running the kids around to and from school, practices, games, and after school clubs.

Although this may feel like the time to put your fitness on the back burner, there is no better time to set fitness goals for yourself and start a routine that fits into the busy times that are about to come! Here are some helpful tips to keep your fitness going/help start a set routine: *Have a set calendar: Plan ahead and mark down times that you can squeeze in exercise. This will help you know what’s on your plate and will help you develop a set schedule that will keep you on track. *Get motivated: Planning and preparation doesn’t mean anything if you aren’t motivated to exercise! Set small goals and make them happen. *Plan ahead: Plan your workouts ahead of time so you make the most of the time that you have and know exactly what you are to do each day. *Pack your gym bag the night before: Put your exercise clothes and tennis shoes beside the bed so you can put them on right when you roll out of bed. All banged up!!

{

By mark hasche

This month we take a good hard look at one of hairstyles’ most controversial techniques…ladies and gentlemen, I give you – insert drum roll here - “The Fringe” (also known as bangs).

The Fringe has been around since haircutting was made possible. Cleopatra showcased a full blunt fringed wig and was the pinnacle of style back in ancient Egypt. Later, Victorians would wear a fringe paired with more subdued styles. By now, all this talk about bangs has probably ignited a nervous twitch. Just remembering your kitchen beautician of a mom lopping off the front of your hair might be a scary and in some cases a traumatic experience. You lived through it and it just might be time for a time warp! What I’m actually trying to get at is that although bangs didn’t work for you as a child, they might just be the answer in keeping you looking fresh and young. Yes, I used the “Y” word, let’s face it people most everyone is on the same page as far as aging goes. There’s a few people I know that 54 August 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

express a disinterest in hopping aboard the forever young train. So to these few proud agers I say “get banged.” Get your minds out of the gutter I’m purely talking about that fringe of hair that so graciously covers the tell tale signs of what decade you were born. Decade, as in you can look as much as ten years younger with just a few quick snips of the shear. Why opt for the scalpel or syringe when a fringe is all you may need to keep that plastic surgeon at bay? Now that I’ve covered what I feel is the most sought after effect of getting banged (couldn’t help myself), lets touch on the rest of them. Bangs are a great way, and in some cases - the only way, to balance out a face shape. Whether it’s a high forehead (also known as a five head) or a less than symmetrical face shape, the proper fringe can bring it all

together. A square face can be softened with a side fringe to draw the eye away from a prominent jaw line. The oblong face shape can also be made more appealing with the proper fringe. The proper fringe can go from polished and slick to side-swept sexy. A dark fringe cut just below the base of the brows above light colored eyes is a gorgeous pairing. A fringe on curly hair is very sexy and gaining popularity. Keratin treatments and thermal re-texturizing services as well as anti-frizz treatments have made wearing a fringe much less stressful. These services when administered properly can keep your fringe from failing by keeping your fringe smooth and controlled even on the most humid of days. I’ve referred to the proper fringe more than a few times. The proper fringe is a fringe that you and your stylist (not your mom, bff or coworker) decide will work best for you. If you just can’t commit to the idea of a fringe, you’re still in luck, there are numerous companies supplying clip in bangs for sale. I would suggest you invest in human hair clip in bangs – there is nothing worse than a face full of Barbie hair. This Delray Divo is out!! Celebrating 20 plus years serving your community By Nicol jenkins Photos by melissa korman

For more than 20 years, happy customers have driven away with their new Hyundais or Acuras from their neighborhood dealership, Delray Hyundai and Delray Acura.

Conveniently located a ½ mile north of the bustling and hip Atlantic Avenue... where quality and customer satisfaction is always guaranteed. Since opening Delray Acura in 1994, owner Jim O’Neill has made a commitment to the community to guarantee the lowest prices and complete customer satisfaction. “We do business throughout Palm Beach and Broward County, with the ma-

jority of our business in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, where we live,” said Howard Isaacs, Marketing Director for Delray Hyundai and Delray Acura. “We like selling to our neighbors in Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Boynton Beach. Our best advertising has always been word of mouth from our customers,” added Bruce Freiman, General Sales Manager. With 20 plus years in the business, the local dealership is continuing its commit-

ment to longstanding quality service and has added a new look to their building. “The building has been refaced outside to have a more modern updated look. We are also in the process of remodeling the interior showroom,” said Bruce. They will also be expanding and opening up a New Certified Pre-Owned car dealership which will store over 100 pre-owned certified vehicles, in all price ranges.

Why buy or lease expensive competitor vehicles when you can drive away in a new Acura or Hyundai model for much less while still keeping that same luxury feel. Look out for new models that have just been released...including the brand new redesigned 2015 Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Genesis and the 2015 Acura TLX and MDX. “The Hyundai is the only manufacturer out there which offers everything under one roof from the top of the line luxury vehicle (Equus) to an entry level vehicle (Accent). The All-New 2015 Genesis starts at $40,000 and competes against other vehicles that are $30,000 more. The All-New redesigned 2015 Sonata is eye-catching and once again sets the standard for Toyota, Honda and Nissan to match. Best of all, it starts at under $23,000,” said Howard. While their focus is on cars and service, the employees at Delray Hyundai and Delray Acura remain committed to helping their local community. Owner Jim O’Neill was instrumental in helping to get the FAU football program started and even donated vehicles to coach Schnellenberger, while being a big sponsor of the new stadium. “We were the first donor to FAU’s football program donating one million dollars to the university and the new stadium. This has given us the honor of having the Delray Acura Club Level and Delray Hyundai Deck named after the dealerships. We are also very active in the community including being a member of all three Chambers, including the Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce. Giving back to the community is what Mr. O’Neill takes pride in,” said Howard. Whenever you stop into either dealer-

These two off-shoots of the famous Boys Market are just a few steps from their namesake yet a million miles from the norm. Grammas Bakery is an anomaly in a world where additives and coloring are key ingredients. Their baked goods, breads, cookies and cakes are not only beautiful on the outside but are wickedly scrumptious on the inside. And the best part is that everything is homemade fresh every day. Say what? A family owned and operated bakery is flourishing just west of downtown Delray Beach? You bet they are. Grammas Bakery takes pride in making bread and rolls from scratch every day without prepackaged dough or heat-up factory made products. You can smell it the moment you walk into this pristine black and white homage to sweet things. Their homemade multi-grain bread is an award winner and so is the black olive bread, challah (with or without raisins), Italian breads, Cranberry Walnut Raisin whole wheat bread and Russian Pumpernickel. There are 40 different types of bread and rolls to quell any craving you might have for homemade bread (call it comfort food for the soul). Their cakes and cookies are a visual mouthwatering treat that will make you want to get a fork and eat them all. The chocolate raspberry cake, red velvet cake, homemade Key Lime Pie, miniature mocha layer cake, triple chocolate mousse and raspberry or blueberry bread pudding will have you throwing out your diet books. And unlike many baked goods sold

today these are made fresh on the premises with natural ingredients. Can life get sweeter? I think not. The old-fashioned bakery that has gone the way of the Edsel is hidden in a strip center just North of Atlantic Avenue and Military Trail (south of The Boys). Their apple pies are so sought after that they now make four different ones – Apple Carmel walnut, Traditional Apple pie, Peach Melba apple pie and Dutch apple pie. And we would be remiss if we didn’t tell you about their old fashioned ginger snap cookies that are a world away from the competition. Making a pilgrimage to both Grammas Bakery and The Girls Strawberry Patch is a mood elevator like none other. Having a bad day, stop by The Girls Strawberry Patch for a return to a time of sensibility. The wooden floor, player piano, fresh homemade ice cream, strawberry shortcake and sundaes, homemade key lime milkshakes, homemade jams and jellies and downhome friendliness make this eatable Prozac for the soul. If love makes the world go around then it is places like The Girls Strawberry Patch that keep it on its axis. Although the inside of the store will remind you of the good old days (before IPO’s and iPads) there is plenty to marvel at outside. But before you walk out the back door, check out the nostalgic candy, trinkets, old-fashioned bottled soda, coconut patties, hot sauces in all flavor and bobble head dolls of famous people. If you are a shoe-a-holic they have a stiletto to hold your cell phone or your wine bottles. They also have special local honey in all flavors and sizes. And don’t forget about their homemade ice cream with names like Gator Tracks (heavenly) and Whala Whala Monkey. Their milkshakes are also a special draw – just ask Carole Volkman, who comes to The Girls quite often for a sugar fix. “These are the best desserts and milkshakes anywhere. I come at least once a week to get a strawberry milkshake. Everyone here is so friendly.” Yes, friendliness abounds at The Girls. It also permeates your heart as you walk out the back door. It is there that 10 acres of land are left to their native ability. No concrete or condos in sight – just nature’s pure bounty. There are waterfalls, fountains and large birds with names like Batman and Robin (that are Violet Turacos). Nearby is a cage that houses a large blue and yellow McCaw named Walter, an Af-

So much to see at The Girls strawberry patch

rican Gray Bird called Shorty and other colorful birds that are usually found in the wild. There is also a newcomer to this wonderful space - that is a working farm during season – and his name is Wilbur the pig. Children flock (with ice cream in hand) to see Wilbur and his side kick, Thumper the Rabbit. Tables and benches outside give you a chance to take a load off your feet (or your to-do list) so you can take in the flora and fauna and enjoy a snack. There’s a train for children that shows them around the farm and explains the wild life and vegetation. The newest addition at The Girls is their Party Room. The Party Room at Grammas House is a children’s dream come true. They have a juke box, popcorn and cotton candy machine, pinball machines, nostalgic movie posters and oversized comfy furniture. It’s a veritable playhouse of thrills and pleasure - and it can be rented anytime. Adults are allowed to have fun there too. Outside the Party House is the straw-

berry patch, where you can pick your own hydroponically grown strawberries or other vegetables (during season). Nearby is a turtle habitat, Koi pond, Jack Fruit Tree, Mango trees, Banana trees and a European Swan Pond with cascading water fall. Also in this heavenly outdoor garden are antique cars, rare birds, a long tail Japanese pheasant and the sounds of what life was like in the pre-construction era of Florida’s innocence. But you don’t have to be a child to be enthralled by all this native glory. Anyone who wants to take a step back in time can luxuriate in the natural beauty and stillness that makes one feel that all is well in the world. Come to this Happy Place, it’s just a few feet from civilization, but a mile away from reality. You’ll be glad you did. THE GIRLS STRAWBERRY PATCH 14466 S Military Trail –Suite 3 (561) 496-0188

Delray Beach and California’s Marina del Rey Take a Cheerful Approach to promoting Tourism Coast to Coast

{

By Stephen Chrisanthus Photos by Todd L’Herou

From opposite ends of the country, Delray Beach and Marina del Rey, California have joined forces in effort to promote tourism between the two cities in a fun and engaging new campaign. The “Beach Buddies” initiative will showcase activities, attractions, dining and hotels in each destination while highlighting parallels between the two communities.

“Our Beach Buddies initiative with Marina del Rey is a serious marketing effort that is executed in a light, fluffy manner,” said Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. “The campaign will utilize our loveable city mascots and social media to get across a real message in a fun and interactive way. “ Just last month, Marty the Pelican – a stuffed animal mascot – made a visit to Delray Beach, hitting all the hot spots and attractions across the city and meeting some of the locals in the process. Marty was spotted dining at the fine eateries of Atlantic Ave, hitting the cultural centers, enjoying the beach and resting his feathers at the beachfront Marriott. In return Delray Beach’s brand ambassador – Swinton the Turtle – made his visit to Marina del Rey a week later to be hosted by the Marina del Rey Convention and Visitors Bureau for some west coast style entertainment. “We’re excited to partner with Delray Beach on this unique cross-promotion. Although our coastal communities are on opposite ends of the continent, we share many unique characteristics and also offer a variety of new experiences for our ‘Beach Buddies’ exchange program,” said Janet Zaldua, Executive Director of the Marina del Rey Convention and Visitors Bureau. American Airlines has further given this cross country relationship wings by now offering a new direct flight from Los Angeles to West Palm Beach. With LAX 4 miles from Marina del Rey and Delray Beach a mere 20 minutes from Palm Beach International, visitors from each city will find it easy to get coast to coast. Social media will take the lead in generating awareness with photo contests, Instagram posts, videos, blogs, custom

hashtags, and Facebook updates. The official destination mascots will be providing regular updates, with Marina del Rey’s Marty the Pelican giving a “bird’s eye view” of Delray Beach while Delray Beach’s Swinton the Turtle “comes out of his shell” in Marina del Rey. “It’s really been a blast having Marty and his team from California here as we get our Beach Buddies marketing initiative off the ground,” said Stephen Chrisanthus, associate director of Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. “We hope this is not only the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Swinton and Marty, but for all the citizens of Delray Beach and Marina del Rey.” For more information visit http://VisitDelrayBeach.org/beachbuddies

Newly Renovated Home from Delray’s Local Real Estate Experts

Where Old-School Delray Character Meets High-End Sophistication By Diane Feen

{

Known for their expertise and extraordinary service, the Delray Beach Real Estate Company has been making waves in local real estate—and the agency’s most recent gem has just hit the market.

Nestled on an oversized corner lot in the heart of the coveted Lake Ida neighborhood, the just-listed home recently underwent a complete transition. Regal palm trees now dot the sprawling front yard, fragrant jasmines line the entrance, and a brand-new circular driveway welcomes visitors. Last year, the house caught the eye of local Lake Ida resident and real estate contractor/ project manager Brock Catronio, who renovates properties in the area. He says these older homes are what make the neighborhood what it is. “This was a structurally sound home with beautiful historical details,” said Catronio, who oversaw the renovation project. “It needed a lot of work, but I couldn’t bear to see it torn down. The original houses around here make Lake Ida such a special and unique neighborhood. So we painstakingly restored it, renovating the home down to the

66 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

studs—from a new yard to all-new plumbing and electric.” Catronio works with partner Scott McClure, whom Catronio refers to as a “visionary” and credits with the success of several other projects. “Thanks to Scott, an admitted perfectionist, the home is impeccable on the inside as well and shows that we spared no expense,” said Catronio. The approximately 2500-square-feet home is contemporary in feel with new impact windows and French doors. The open floor plan offers a breath of fresh air and the three bedrooms and living room overlook the pool and lush tropical backyard. The “smart-ready home” is also wired with an infrastructure capable of supporting the latest technology to enable its owners to manage the home from anywhere. This blend of Delray history and 21stcentury modernity resonated with Noelle

McIntyre, Broker-Owner of Delray Beach Real Estate Company, whose signature blueand-black sign sits in the green grass out front. “Brock’s motto is ‘built not bought,’” said McIntyre. “These homes boast customcrafted features that he and Scott build with their own hands. From a wrought-iron lattice with pineapple cornerstones at another Lake Ida house, to the handmade shutters on this one, these pieces add character and uniqueness to each home. Buyers love this attention to detail knowing they are getting something special that not every home has.” McIntyre knows something about what buyers want. The third generation native, whose father built custom homes along the Delray coastline, has watched her hometown grow into a booming mini-metropolis. McIntyre said she started the Delray Beach Real Estate Company with precisely this type of custom, high-end Delray property in mind. “Homes like this deserve ‘best-of-the-best’ real estate service,” said McIntyre. “Delray Beach Real Estate Company is a local boutique firm with a reach that surpasses some of the biggest players. Our clients get handson, one on one attention with all of the benefits of a larger office.” Client Beth Isham, who has sold over $5 million in property with McIntyre, agreed. “Noelle made me feel like I was her top priority. She moved every transaction forward quickly and smoothly. Plus, Noelle is dependable. I knew I could count on and trust her. And she got the results I was looking for.” McIntyre’s background in contracts and compliance is also a big plus for clients, who can get overwhelmed by the process of buying or selling a home. “She makes sure every transaction is perfect,” said Heidi Hill, whose properties McIntyre manages. This 5-star service coupled with the hightouch, über-responsiveness to customers’ needs has resonated with local and international clients alike. So far this year, McIntyre and her partner have sold over $40 million in real estate, closing well over 150 transactions. In fact, the firm has become so busy that McIntyre had to modify her focus to include finding new talent to help support the company’s growth. “Our agents have expert knowledge of luxury properties, including oceanfront, historic, lakefront, and country club offerings. They share a deep understanding of the market (and communities that they serve) and pride themselves on high-quality listings and indepth information for clients. Our associates

live and work in the area they specialize in, giving them valuable insight into this highly specialized real estate niche. But—we need more of them!” said McIntyre. Local resident and realtor Porter Beermann is one of those agents. The Ivy-League educated “Lake Idan” joined McIntyre two years ago. “I wanted a company that had proven results but also offered broker support. McIntyre is a true real estate mentor for me. From local expertise to understanding of complicated transactions, her breadth of knowledge is impressive.” Beermann focuses on the Lake Ida and surrounding areas. “Living here has given me great insight into what the neighborhoods offer. I know which streets that have more kids, which ones are quieter, and which ones have the best investment potential. I live, breathe and love Delray.” That was the difference for Catronio and McClure when it came time to choose the best real estate company to represent them, not only on this property, but for several oth-

er projects they have partnered on. For them, Delray Beach Real Estate Company embodied that elusive mix of small-town trustworthiness with forward focused and outside-thebox thinking that has characterized Delray’s own growth into a thriving economy. “With houses like this you want someone who gets ‘the vision,’” said Catronio. “We want to preserve the character of the area while moving it forward with ‘the latest and greatest’ accouterments. McIntyre and her team get that. They’re sharp on the business front and are open, honest, and reliable through every transaction. They know where the market is now—and where it’s going.” To schedule a private tour of this home— which blends classic Delray character with cutting-edge sophistication—call Delray Beach Real Estate Company. PETERSON’S FLOWER MARKET By Diane Feen

It’s not only an interesting fact, but one that’s been proven in studies from major universities. Behavioral researchers at Rutgers University (and Harvard) found that flowers have the remarkable power to improve emotional health. They found that being in the presence of flowers can elevate ones mood significantly, increase feelings of satisfaction and positive social behavior. Barbara Peterson and her son Michael knew this all along. They’re part of the Peterson clan that staked their claim in the flower business 60 years ago. Although the business was founded by Sven Arthur Peterson, it has since been passed on to grandsons Paul, Eric, James and Michael. But it is Barbara Peterson that often greets customers when they enter this retail flower shop on Atlantic Avenue (next to the Big Apple Shopping Bazaar). It is also Barbara who tells customers they should cut the stems under water and it is Barbara (and Michael) who tend to your floral needs – be they festive or somber. Just recently Natalie Miller and Faye Diamond stopped by to pick out a bouquet for their friend who just got out of the hospital.

It is well known that color can be a mood enhancer, but did you know that flowers can make your blue moods a brighter shade of happy?

Barbara made sure the Delray Beach residents got the perfect floral pick-me-up for their ailing friend. “I always come here because I know I can get a fresh bouquet of flowers. I’m bringing these to my friend’s house who just fell and broke her shoulder,” said Miller. Miller isn’t the only one who turned to Peterson’s for a fresh floral pick me up. James Knight did the same thing. “These are the prettiest flowers I have ever given my wife. She loved them! And they lasted forever. I will definitely use you again.” Peterson’s Flower Market can make beautiful floral arrangements for your every need in luminescent colors of the rainbow. They will also make special bouquets for weddings, parties, charity events, birthdays, graduation parties, holiday’s or any special occasion. But there doesn’t have to be a special occasion to buy flowers. Just ask The Peterson’s. Barbara peterson, owner

“Sometimes the very best gifts are for no reason at all. Sending flowers ‘Just because’ is the best way to make someone’s day. Send Mom a small vase of lilies to say ‘Thinking of you,’ or send your sweetheart a dozen roses just because you love her.” If you want something unique or specific in color or décor all you have to do is ask. They have hydrangeas, lilies, Gerbera Daisies, colorful roses (in electric and pastel shades), Fuji mums, Heliconia, orchids or anything you want. If you ask Michael he will tell you that Peterson’s Flower Market carries an average of 35 different types of flowers. “Almost every flower is available all year round here. We were also voted the best place to buy flowers in all of Palm Beach County.” Their roses are serenely beautiful in all pastel and bright colors. Because they are so fresh they can last up to two weeks, but you must

take care of them. According to Barbara you can’t leave the flowers in your car (or in the heat) and it helps to put citric acid in the water. As a matter of fact they have cans of Sprite on the counter to be used to keep the flowers fresh and lively. “If you use something like Sprite or 7-Up in your flower vase it keeps the water clean and allows fewer germs,” said Barbara, whose presence is in sync with her colorful surroundings. During the summer months you can get two dozen roses in one color for only $15. You can also pick from one of their vases and have a bouquet of flowers made to match your outfit or the décor of your house. If you’re celebrating a Birthday there are dozens of flower arrangements to choose from. The “Celebrate the Day” flowers have orange, purple, yellow and blue flowers that pop out in glory and there are arrangements called “You’re the Greatest,” “Straight from the Heart,” “Life of the Party,” “Best Wishes Basket,” and others. There are times when you need flowers, but the occasion is not a happy one. For funerals (or condolence calls) Peterson’s has a large selection of bouquets and wreaths. They have classic freshcut red roses with accents of eucalyptus and other fresh flowers. There are Standing Spray Funeral Flowers, Sympathy Wreathes, Regal Rose Urn Funeral Flowers, Twilight Serenity Sympathy Tributes, Colorful Condolence Tributes, Thoughtful Reflections and more. If you need help picking out the right flowers for an occasion all you have to do is ask. The staff at Peterson’s will create bouquets, floral arrangements or centerpieces for an on-site event or for your home that meets your lifestyle, color choice and budget. If your request is of a special nature the flowers can be sent directly on site of the occasion. “We will design and deliver a funeral arrangement that beautifully conveys your feelings of sympathy and serves as a lovely tribute to the deceased.” If you stop by the store Barbara, Michael and their staff will show you their fresh selection of exotic and colorful flowers. “It is our pleasure to assist you with any local or nationwide wire service deliveries. Corporate accounts are also welcome. We offer daily floral deliveries to local funeral homes and hospitals. I am proud to be the 4th generation of Peterson’s to carry on this flower legacy,” said Michael. The Delray Beach Historical Society is making some history itself these days.

{

By LINDA BROWN “MEMORIES OF LAKE IDA” - DBHS ARCHIVES

The non-profit, founded in 1964, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a celebration of Delray’s neighborhoods.

The first neighborhood honored is Lake Ida and the Society held a fish fry at the Cason Cottage Museum on Swinton Avenue and First Street to celebrate Lake Ida’s important role in the fabric of Delray Beach. The event also served as the opening of a new exhibit that chronicles Lake Ida’s rich history. The “Memories of Lake Ida” exhibit will be open through September and is the first in a series to celebrate and look back at Delray’s neighborhoods. “The Neighborhood Series is a part of our 50th Birthday Celebration this year. We wanted to share the unique stories and origins of each neighborhood directly with the community and attract new members who can continue to share their personal history, expanding our archives,” says Winnie Edwards, Executive Director. The “Memories of Lake Ida” exhibit features photographs, maps, stories and memorabilia specific to the Lake Ida neighborhood and the people who created it. You can visit the Delray Beach Historical Society website at www.delraybeachhistory.org for more information on upcoming history exhibits. Celebrating its 50th year, the Society is reaching out to a broader membership base of families, and has a goal of reaching 1,000

members by December of this year, culminating in a Pineapple Jubilee Event this December. Membership dues go directly towards helping preserve the City of Delray Beach’s archives and the development of history and educational programs for the community. Member benefits include year-long free admission, advance ticket sales for events, discounts and guided access to the Ethel Sterling Williams Research Library and Archives. Led by Director Edwards, the Delray Beach Historic Society seems to have a newfound energy. The organization suffered through difficult economic times and turnover on the staff level. But under Edwards the organization seems to have a renewed focus. The Society has ambitious goals as it turns 50, especially around membership which has been stagnant over the years. The City of Delray Beach and CRA have invested in the Cason Cottage and the preservation of archives over the years and interest in local history is keen. Historic preservation remains a hot button topic in Delray as the recent debate over the

redevelopment of the historic Sundy House has shown. The historic Sundy House and Inn and surrounding properties were recently purchased in what has been called the biggest downtown deal in over decade. The price tag: about $30 million. Hudson Holdings, which purchased the Sundy House (the home of Delray’s first mayor) plans to expand the 12 room inn and add retail to the site. They also plan to reinvigorate the restaurant and event space. Proponents of the plan contend that in order to preserve history you need to have investment, opponents worry about losing the city’s historic charm. As a not for profit, the Historic Society does not take sides on political disputes, but the organization is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Delray’s extremely rich and varied history. To mark the milestone, a friend suggested that I should jot down 50 memories of Delray Beach. The rules were simple: the first 50 thoughts that entered my mind. I thought I’d share that list with the readers of Atlantic Ave Magazine. P.S. Being involved with this magazine is one of my favorite things in Delray. I hope you enjoy and I hope this sparks some of your own Delray memories. This is a very special place. In no particular order, the first 50 that entered my now 50 year-old mind. 1. Ride alongs with Delray Beach police officers – In the 80s, 90s and through my time as mayor I had the chance to spend a lot of time in police cruisers. It was an eye-opener for a young reporter and helped shape my beliefs as an elected official. I went on warrant sweeps, drug stings, tact team operations and K-9 training missions and saw some amazing things. The experience gave me a whole new appreciation for our police officers and some of the issues they confront on a daily basis. 2. Handing out Candy on Fire Trucks – Former Chief Kerry Koen started the tradition and it was a blast to ride with the firefighters and meet the kids as they ran toward the bright red engines. After 9/11 and the anthrax scares in Boca, we received call after call from parents concerned that their children had brought home anthrax. Our department had to respond to every call – the suspicious powders turned out to be sugar and sand. It was a scary time. 3. James Brown Performing at the Tennis Stadium – I’m not sure of the year, I think 1996, but the hardest working man

in show biz played Delray and I had a chance to interview him at the Boca Executive Airport. I got to the airport early to greet his jet and ran into Mr. Brown in the hallway. I was given a one-on-one exclusive. He was very interesting indeed. P.S. The new movie on his life is great. 4. Grand Opening of the new Delray Library – I was fortunate to be mayor when the new library was built. We campaigned for some funding in the 2005 Parks Bond and the voters responded. There was a book passing ceremony to transfer the collection from the old library to the new one. It was an unforgettable experience. 5. Downtown Master Plan Charrette – Hundreds of citizens showed up to brainstorm ideas in 2001 for their downtown. It was a citizen driven plan and it helped to build the best downtown in Florida and just as important expand downtown’s boundaries from A1A to I-95. One downtown. A great civic moment. 6. Florida Trend cover – In 1993, the influential statewide business magazine named Delray Beach “the best run town in Florida”. Talk about a proud moment.

7. 2001 All America City Win – Delray Beach won the award in ’93 and went for a record second in 2001, after falling just short in ’98. The pressure was on and hundreds of proud Delray Beachers descended on Atlanta to present some incredible projects. When our name was read as one of 10 winners, a huge roar erupted. We were a unified city and anything was possible. 8. The First Art and Jazz on the Avenue – Not sure of the year, but I remember the posters and the event. A mass street party with music, people, sights and sounds of a vibrant Atlantic Avenue. 9. Coffee With the Pompey’s – When I moved to Delray in 1987, I was told to visit C. Spencer and H. Ruth Pompey. The legendary Pompey’s were civic giants, civil rights leaders and educators who touched thousands of young lives. They lived Delray’s history and as a young reporter I needed to know what came before to understand what was happening in the present. I visited with them in their living room and began a conversation that only stopped upon their passing. We raised funds for a bronze

statue of Mr. Pompey that he posed for shortly before he passed. That statue sits in City Hall. I had the honor of eulogizing Mrs. Pompey a few years later. They taught me and everybody who crossed their paths more than I can ever convey. 10. A Poem from Mrs. Wesley – When I was termed out of office in ’07, my dear friend Elizabeth Wesley paid me a visit at City Hall. She presented me with a cassette tape of her favorite poem, Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son”. Hearing her recite the poem with her beautiful voice was the best gift a person could ever receive. “Son, you kept the covenant” she said. If anyone ever questions the value of public service, I could play them that tape. It’s all about touching people and Mrs. Wesley touched more people, more deeply than anyone I’ve ever known. I was lucky to receive another amazing poem from our City Attorney Susan Ruby and yet another from beach resident Patsy Westall. They are treasured memories. 11. Seeing the Lake Ida Dog Park Open – If you love dogs, that was a moment. CONTINUES

12. Judging the Easter Bonnet Pet Parade – Scores of dogs (a pig, a goat and always one very brave cat) makes this a great Delray community tradition. 13. Election Nights at the old Boston’s on the Beach – Who can forget watching the returns come in glacially slow at the old Boston’s with Perry Don Francisco hosting the festivities? We were undefeated when we went to Boston’s and the night always ended with a nightcap in Perry’s third floor office listening to Sinatra. Priceless.

were exhausting days for the community as we struggled without power, gas and basic services. But we came together as a city and made it through. Traveling through neighborhoods I saw parents showing movies on garage doors, sharing grills and helping the elderly clear debris. It was moving and very beautiful. 17. Fed Cup – When we hosted the US Fed Cup team we made history with three number one players on the US squad coming to Delray. Venus and Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport were great to work with and visited Pine Grove to meet and

14. Wandering the gardens of the Sundy House – I remember when the Sundy House was first restored by a gentleman named Lou Jensen. It was a tea house in those days. But when Tom Worrell (my old boss) got a hold of the place --wow. An urban oasis with paths and plants that are simply breathtaking. 15. The tragic death of Pete Firehock – I remember getting a phone call from the acting city manager informing us that firefighter Firehock was killed at a park in Boynton Beach. Time just stopped. A family member was lost. He was a 23 year vet killed by someone who thought Pete witnessed the dumping of a body. Two months after 9/11 and right before Christmas. We saw the department and community unite in his memory. 16. Coming together after hurricanes – We had lots of hurricanes a decade ago. Wilma was a bad one. Those

74 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

greet our kids. The outgunned Belgians were good sports, I spotted them at Rotelli’s, enjoying the avenue and we shared pizza and laughs. 18. Hosting the Davis Cup – The stadium was full and rocking. Local star Andy Roddick set the world record for fastest serve ever recorded at 153 miles per hour on match point to clinch the tie. From picking the line-up out of a conch shell to hanging with tennis writer Bud Collins, it was a hoot. 19. Andre Agassi – Last tennis reference, I promise. But Andre came to town with Steffi Graf and electrified the local fans. It was his first comeback event after a serious back injury and we hoped he would last. He won a few matches and filled the seats every time. 20. Watching the Achievement Center Grow – I first met Nancy Hurd when she had a classroom at local church.

I remember when Lawton Chiles visited the new facility on Lake Ida Road and watched that facility grow to serve hundreds of beautiful kids. We are blessed. 21. Watching Our Lifeguards Compete – We have a great lifesaving team in Delray. They keep more than a million visitors a year safe and they are very cool people too. I remember sitting on the sand just enjoying seeing them compete and usually win. 22. Passing the Parks Bond – We campaigned for funds to build a downtown park, the Old School Square Garage, a bunch of new parks and for money to fix older ones. Not to mention the new library. I remember sitting in a Washington D.C. hotel room getting the call that all of the bond issue questions passed overwhelmingly. Great cities invest and re-invest in themselves. 23. The opening of the Spady Museum – A proud moment for the community and Mrs. Vera Farrington. 24. The Arts Garage – Seeing a dead space come to life with Grammy winning musicians playing to packed houses. 25. Delray Center for the Arts – It will always be Old School Square to me. Walking in the building makes you feel that you’ve come home. And then there’s the great Frances Bourque, a true local legend whose vision made it happen. From my wedding to town hall meetings, roasts and neighborhood dinners---Delray Center is the center of it all. Delray’s gathering space. 26. Luna Rosa – Caffe Luna Rosa is one of those “only in Delray” places. Great food, great views, great service and a great proprietor. Fran Marincola is an original. His views on local and world politics are always on the menu and his wisdom about life is reserved for those of us who listen. I listen. We argue. We make up and we learn. 27. Bucky Dent & Little Fenway – Sometime after the opening of Little Fenway at Miller Park, Bucky Dent invited Mike Torrez to Delray to re-enact the famous home run that broke hearts in ’78 throughout New England. Torrez was a good sport and served up another home run ball to Dent who launched it over Delray’s replica of the Green Monster. In 2003, on the 25th anniversary of the homer, we invited Bucky to receive a special proclamation at City Hall. He obliged and poked good natured fun at Commissioner Bob Costin who donned a Sox cap. 28. Boston’s Upper Deck – Before

there was 50 S. Ocean, there was The Upper Deck. We celebrated my mom’s last Mother’s Day there and had a steak dinner with my dad after he recovered from a bad car accident. 29. In Her Shoes – Delray has had its brushes with Hollywood. It was a treat to host Cameron Diaz (her then squeeze Justin Timberlake) and the legendary Shirley MacLaine during the filming of this hit. I met Ms. MacLaine at the Sundy House where she informed me that her dog had to accompany her everywhere. I assured her we

were OK with that. 30. Bad Boys II – Hosting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence brought lots of press to Delray. When the production team blew up a mansion on the beach, the debris did lots of damage to our Fire Chief’s car. All in a day’s work. When the movie came out, they painted mountains in the background of the shot. Delray looks good with mountains in the background. 31. B.L. Stryker – Palm Beach County native Burt Reynolds filmed an episode of his detective series at real life private investigator Virginia Snyder’s House on S. Swinton in the late 80s. I interviewed Burt and the great Maureen Stapleton on the porch of the historic Cathcart House. We were carefully screened because Burt hated the tabloids. We assured him we had nothing to do with the National Enquirer. Once comfortable, he was a perfect gentleman. 32. Holiday Toy Drives – I wrote about them when Officer Jeff Miller was leading

the charge. Always amazing to see the bins overflowing and knowing that kids who were needy would have toys for Christmas. I also love the drives for our soldiers and the mad dash to fill care packages for our troops. 33. Turkey Giveways – Driving through neighborhoods with the kids searching for addresses back in the Sunrise Kiwanis days and later running around with Don King when he visited Village Academy and other places in a Santa Hat. But the best was spending the day delivering hundreds of turkeys with a group from Office Depot. 34. Delray Affair (when it had concerts) – Gary Puckett and the Union Gap at Veterans Park, judging the best conch fritters and playing hooky from work to beat the crowds on the Friday of the festival. 35. Bill Wood and Chris Brown – The Chamber President and CRA Director walking the avenue and dreaming of what could be. Because back then, we dreamed of having a parking problem. 36. When the answer was Jacobson’s – When I first moved to Delray, the conventional wisdom was that if you wanted to revive downtown you needed an anchor tenant. The dream back then was Jacobson’s at Atlantic Plaza. 37. Dignitaries Visiting Delray – President George H.W. Bush playing tennis with Chris Evert, Mary Robinson, president of Ireland, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Dion at Bru’s Room, Jimmy Buffett losing his cellphone at Brisa Atlantica, VP Al Gore at Old School Square and my celebrity crush Elisabeth Shue playing tennis at the Tennis Center. 38. Java City Junction – Before Starbucks and the Coffee District, there was Java City on Atlantic Ave. Ricky Segal was a pioneer and his café made the front page of newspapers because back in the day anything opening on Atlantic Ave was news. 39. MAD DADS – In the early 90s, a group of citizens led by Chuck Ridley and Ben Bryant formed MAD DADS. The group would walk neighborhoods and confront drug dealers who operated on virtually every corner. It was the beginning of a partnership with the Police Department, city and CRA that would prove to make a big difference. Those were some days. 40. Monday-Thursday Papers – The Monday Paper and Delray Times covered local cities like the Washington Post. 5-7 stories a week, news briefs and a police blotter. The community’s water cooler and

delivered free on your lawn. 41. Chief Overman – A visionary from Orlando who transformed the PD and developed a slew of chiefs. 42. Roasts – They used to be annual, they were always fun and they raised money for good causes. Roasting Bill Wood and Joe Gillie never got old. 43. Mickey Mantle – Caffe Luna Rosa proprietor Fran Marincola found me at City Hall on New Year’s Eve and shoved “The Mick’s” rookie contract under the door. A generous last minute donation that now sits at our library. 44. Celebrity Softball – Did you know there was a celebrity softball game many years ago at Miller Field. I remember Wilt Chamberlain and John Havlicek participating. The rest is a blur. Father Roland Desormeaux

45. Our Lady Queen of Peace – Father Desormeaux held services that were extraordinary in their emotion after Jean Bertrand Aristide was deposed in Haiti in the 90s. Marches through the streets ensued. It was an amazing time to be a young reporter in Delray Beach. 46. Sitting in the Back Row in Commission Chambers – With Boca News reporter Darcie Lunsford in which we imagined what Darcie would do if she became mayor. 47. Principal for a Day – Serving as Bill Fay’s understudy as he raced around the school and repeated to me over and over how happy he was in his job. Passion: the sign of a great educator. 48. 9/11 – remembering how we came together as a community, especially after learning that several of the terrorists lived in Delray. 49. Mayor Schmidt’s Grace Under Fire – watching how he navigated controversies was a good lesson for me. 50. Jerrod Miller – I think about him every day.

BIKRAM YOGA DELRAY BEACH

Where Health And Happiness Preside By Diane Feen Photo by melissa Korman

It’s a rare person who doesn’t want to feel good, look good and be healthy. It’s become such an obsession that entire industries and practitioners have popped up promising a happier healthier you.

Owner, JOn Kinsman in newly designed studio

Some require pills, others demand will power and some swear that affirmations are the key to a happy healthy life. And for some people these things work. But for others a 90 minute miracle called Bikram Yoga is the key to concentration, weight loss, increased bone density and a better sense of self. And who’s to argue? If you listen to students walking into the 4:30 Bikram Yoga class at Bikram Yoga Delray Beach you would think it is the Holy

76 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Grail. And as someone who has taken one of these classes I have to admit, there is truth to these claims. But like everything in life – good things don’t come easy. They take a little patience and some time. But for most of us 90 minutes is just a short blip in the space of our day. That is one reason that Social Media expert Cindy Broome started coming to Bikram Yoga Delray Beach over a year ago. The pretty blond lost ten pounds and has seen a total transformation in her life. She

also convinced her boyfriend Chris to partake in this rigorous form of exercise. “Bikram Yoga Delray Beach is the best studio in the country. I sleep better and can concentrate much better when I am working. My boyfriend Chris lost 23 pounds coming to Bikram Yoga Delray Beach and he feels amazing. He looks younger now and has gained so much confidence. The couple that sweats together stays together,” said Broome, who takes four to five classes a week and is enamored with the results and the endorphin rush at Bikram Yoga Delray Beach. Broome isn’t the only one who has seen results from this age old yoga practice made up of 26 postures and two breathing exercises designed to overcome stress, eliminate toxins, increase stamina, flexibility and heal whatever ails you. Jon Kinsman, who owns Bikram Yoga Delray Beach, knows firsthand what it can do for your sense of well being and overall health. “When you practice Bikram Yoga you eliminate toxins in your body. It can be heavy metals or simply processed foods, but the cleansing is a pathway to feeling good,” said Kinsman. According to Kinsman you can increase bone density, stimulate the parathyroid glands (that control calcium levels) and balance the metabolism, glands and insulin levels of the body. Not bad when you realize how much there is to perfect in our complicated selves. And it’s not just the physical as-

pects that Bikram Yoga devotees shout about from the rafters. “Bikram Yoga affects your whole life. You don’t eat things you shouldn’t, say things you shouldn’t, hang out with people you shouldn’t – it just makes you feel good about yourself,” said Bikram Yoga Delray instructor Tiffany Cofer, who says that Bikram Yoga Delray Beach is a star in the constellation of yoga studios around the country. For Deana Hernandez, Bikram Yoga Delray Beach was a Godsend. After a car accident left her with pain and sleeping problems she found her way to this Zenlike yoga studio South of Linton Blvd. on Federal Hwy. And she’s glad she did. “After doing Bikram Yoga here I no longer needed sleeping pills and I didn’t have to go to the chiropractor as much. It helps put my back into place and I find myself eating healthier and living healthier.” The same could be said of Stuart Feldman. After a life of sports and rigorous activities he found that Bikram Yoga was a way to circumvent pain yet get a good workout. He also had chronic back problems. “I come here three or four days a week and have found that I feel great af-

ter doing Bikram Yoga. The benefits I have seen are increased flexibility, endurance, mental clarity, weight loss, patience and a sense of well being. It’s one of the greatest things I have done for myself,” said the Boca Raton anesthesiologist. Aside from the health benefits (both mental and physical) there are some changes that have taken place at Bikram Yoga Delray Beach. Kinsman painted the studio, added a more Zen feel and replaced the yoga room carpet with a soft vinyl padded floor. This hospital grade flooring is perfect for a yoga practice known for its 103 sweltering degree heat. Kinsman also said the new floor is easier on the joints and is cleaner and healthier for students. There’s also a retail wall stocked with yoga clothing from companies such as Shakti, Onzie and La La Land. Yoga mats can be purchased as well as a product that is part yoga mat and part towel. There might be a lot of Yoga studios, but Bikram Yoga Delray Beach stands out from the crowd. Everyone who goes there feels it, and those who teach there are equally as enthused about the laid back friendliness of the studio. “I have lived in a lot of

places and this is my favorite yoga studio. They have the most consistent client base and the most disciplined students. There is something very special about this place – you can feel it in the energy. The students become friends and they take care of each other, it’s a great place,” adds Cofer. That is one reason that Bikram Yoga Delray Beach has been in business for the past 12 years and is still going strong. “I look forward to providing the same great service at the same great location for many years to come,” adds Kinsman. If you’re looking for a way to surpass the norm and excel beyond your wildest expectations try Bikram Yoga. And, if you want to do it at a studio that heralds your uniqueness, health and harmony then go to Bikram Yoga Delray Beach. Kinsman is the perfect host who makes sure everyone is just where they want to be – happy and healthy. JEFFREY GOLDMAN

The New Police Chief Of Delray Beach

{

By Diane Feen

Photo by melissa korman

For the past 25 years Jeffrey Goldman has been doing what he loves best – serving the people of Delray Beach. His four-page single spaced resume says a lot about his accomplishments but when you meet this affable family man you know you are in the presence of someone special.

Like everyone else he values the sanctity of family and living up to his responsibilities at home and at work. He understands the foibles of human kind, yet knows that helping others is not an extracurricular activity – its part of being a good citizen. But there is more to this charming fellow than meets the eye (if you are tall enough to do so). He started out working at his parent’s restaurant in Pompano Beach, but was enamored by the stories he was told by off-duty policemen who had stopped by for a meal. It wasn’t long before he signed up for the Reserve Academy and became an auxiliary officer. By day he cooked, cleaned and delivered food at Jerry’s Kitchen and two nights a week he rode with police officers assisting them in street patrol or traffic control. The experience was one that shaped his career and his dreams. “When I first started out riding with police officers I loved it. Every day was something different and I really got the bug to apply for a real police job,” said the charismatic new Police Chief. And that is exactly what he did. By the time he was 20-years-old he was hired by the Delray Beach Police Department and was enrolled in the Police Academy. After his four month training Goldman became a community Patrol officer. It wasn’t long before he steadily climbed the chain of command. He joined the Tactical Team, Special Entry Team, Criminal Investigations, SWAT Team (as well as SWAT Leader and Commander), Community Patrolman and by 2011 he became the Assistant Chief of Police.

September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Along the way Goldman got married, had two children, went back to school for a Bachelor of science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. But throughout his steady climb upward in the Delray Beach Police Department some things never changed. “Jeffrey is a good guy and a great leader. He has great people skills as well as the technical ability to do the job well. He has done everything he has to do to prepare for the position of chief of police,” said former Police Chief of Delray, Anthony Strianese. Strianese, like many others, is quite familiar with the extraordinary dedication and proven ability of Chief Goldman. A self-proclaimed Leadership Junkie, Goldman is a remarkable role model for anyone in his wake. He understands that diversity of thought and personality is something to admire. He also understands every role (and duty) in the chain of command that he has so gracefully inhabited in his 25 years with the department. Like most people who are passionate about their careers, Goldman knows that excellence is not something to dream about but something to achieve one step at a time. “The values I believe in can be summed up in the word LEAD. They are: Learning that is life long, Excellence in service, Accountability to our mission and Diversity. We need to reflect the demographics of our community and have an organization of people with different skill sets and thought processes. If everyone is thinking the same thing, then no one is thinking,” said Goldman, who is on the Board of

AVDA and recently received recognition from them for his leadership in the community. One of the things that makes Goldman so extraordinary is his understanding of diversity. He acknowledges that a room full of people that think alike might be an ego trip for some leaders, but he knows that to achieve greatness it takes more. “I think it is of great importance

to surround yourself with people who think differently than you do. A diverse environment creates excellence. I also learned (from my mentors) that you have to have followers and be a visionary to prepare for tomorrow.” Part of his preparation for tomorrow includes cultivating and mentoring new leaders who will serve the people of Delray Beach. It is Goldman’s goal (both

long and short term) to make sure that the community has a positive perception of what the police department does and who they are. “I think it is important that the police department be engaged with the community. I want to break down the barriers and show the public that police officers are men and women, mothers and fathers - real people like them. It’s not a question of ‘us’ verses ‘them,’ we’re in this together.” Togetherness is a concept that has been a lightning rod for Goldman throughout his life. He comes from a close knit family (born in Hollywood, Florida) and holds his family life in high esteem. He has been coaching youth football for the past 12 years and is devoted to his wife Cindy (who runs the cheerleaders program) and his 11-year-old son Tyler and 13-year-old daughter Samantha. “Family is very important to me. I learned that life is short and even though my new position might mean I have to be more accessible to the job, my wife and kids are very supportive.” Goldman is past president of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club of Delray Beach (and is still a member) and has a list of awards that have been bestowed upon him. Although he doesn’t say much about being the officer of the year and officer of the month, he is proud of being a graduate of the FBI National Academy (241st Session). Those who have worked with Goldman are proud of what he has accomplished and positive that he is the right man for job of Police Chief of Delray Beach. “Chief Goldman has a strong grasp of all facets of law enforcement. He is an advocate of community policing and will ensure a strong relationship and partnership with the community and the police department. He is a proven leader dedicated and passionate about his work and committed to providing the city with excellent police service,” said Craig Hartmann, Police Chief of Highland Beach. Although Goldman has had enough titles to make him sound like a super hero (Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief) he likes to think of himself as a hard working public servant (and mentor) doing his job to the best of his ability. “We have a lot of talent here. My job as the next Chief is to find future leaders. People are our number one resource. I am honored and humbled to lead the agency I call home.

A New Chapter In The Life Of

DIG RESTAURANT { By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

They are still Doing it Green at DIG Restaurant in the Atlantic Plaza in East Delray Beach.

August 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

But there’s something new at this unique restaurant that specializes in clean eating – and it’s the owners. Mother and daughter team Catherine Murray and Heather Dauss now own this hidden gem that specializes in food that is tasty and exciting, yet has the health benefits that would get an approving nod from Dr. Oz. New owners Dauss and Murray are always on the premises and aim to please. You won’t be disappointed with the food either. They still have terrific food that is often organic, gluten-free, free range and ethically tended. But don’t go thinking this is purely a vegetarian restaurant because it’s not. “We have food for everyone here. We have wild caught salmon, hormone-free beef and free range chicken. Our turkey burgers are

ground in house and we have a ‘build your own burger’ as well. We also use organic potatoes to make potato wedges,” said Dauss, who comes from a family immersed in the restaurant business. DIG also specializes in serving farm fresh organic vegetables and home- grown herbs. Ken McCall is still the chef, but there is a second chef on board - Anthony Griffin, a former caterer from Texas. Both McCall and Griffin are keeping some of the old favorites, but are adding new dishes to the mix as well. They still have terrific Miso Soy Salmon (pan seared and juicy with red quinoa and seasonal organic vegetables) and Chicken Florentine stuffed with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese. The chicken dish is topped with garlic and tarragon cream

sauce and served over garlic smashed potatoes and roasted organic vegetables. Shrimp Scampi is a new item on their menu, so prepare yourself for a divine dish tossed in garlic and shallots in a white wine lemon sauce served over linguini. For those who always loved DIG’s Eggplant Parmesan, house-ground Chicken Meatballs or Chicken Marsala you’re in luck – they’re still available. But you have to try one of their outstanding Flatbread dishes. Our favorite is the Chicken Caesar Flatbread with grilled chicken, pesto, caramelized red onion, fresh mozzarella and topped with a crispy Caesar salad. Also excellent is the Margarita flatbread, homemade free-range Chicken Meatball Flatbread and Forest Mushroom Flatbread. There is one constant at this well known, yet hidden oasis of good taste, and it’s the quality of the food and the superb flavoring. The Lamb Lollipops are out of this world served with a cucumber, date, fennel and pecan salad that is unrivaled. The lamb is moist and tender and the side dish just hits the spot. Soni Frascella recently went to DIG for the first time and couldn’t stop raving about the food. “This is a terrific restaurant. The food was outstanding and the portions were generous. The Chicken Caesar Flatbread was amazing and the lamb chops were divine – tender and perfectly seasoned. I also loved the sundried tomato, anchovy and olive oil tapenade they served with bread when we sat down.” Alan of Lake Worth was equally as enthralled with the new incarnation of DIG. “I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at DIG and was blown away by the variety of salads, burgers and entrees. We shared lollipop lamb that was perfectly grilled and served with a mild Tzatziki dipping sauce. The Dig Salad with

fresh greens, apples, gorgonzola and pecans was a nice segue to the Wagyu steak dinner. The service was great and the live music made it a terrific experience.” Aside from all the goodies being served at DIG (did we tell you about the Organic Juice and Smoothie Bar?) there is live music on weekends (off-season) and every night during season. Just recently Mervyn Johnston made beautiful music while guests dined in splendor. Dig is also famous for their wonderful Brunch that can be enjoyed al fresco (outside under the trees) or inside. The DIG brunch is a tradition for those who love homemade food that might just spark a few endorphins. Their French Toast – made with Brioche bread, Strawberries and fresh whipped cream is a real treat. The Garden Omelet is also popular with roasted organic vegetables, cheddar and pepper jack cheese, multi-grain bread (or English muffin), roasted potatoes and fruit. For a healthy alternative try their new Egg White Frittata. There’s also a Bloody Mary Bar every Sunday until 4pm. Made with assorted gourmet hot sauces, organic vegetables, jalapenos and other ingredients that change weekly, The Bloody Mary Bar is everyone’s favorite (for only $5). Since DIG has a large presence in Delray Beach – and literally a large square-foot imprint – there is plenty of space at the bar or lounge to enjoy the simple things in life. That is why their bar menu has increased. They now have an assortment of DIG Cocktails that range from Skinny Margaritas to Vohito’s, Spa Day, Blueberry Lemonade, The Not So Plain Old Mojito (and others). There’s also a large selection of Draft Beers from local breweries (including organic and gluten-free options) with names like Funky Buddha Hop Gun, Monk in the Trunk, Due BBQ Chicken Flatbread

Seared Asian Yellowfish Tuna

Bake Brie Board

BBQ Ancho Chili all natural Salmon

South Category 3 IPA, etc. They also have a large selection of bottled beer as well. If you want to end your meal with a decadent dessert – start with their flowerless chocolate cake with strawberries. It’s soft, sweet chocolate countenance is beyond words and will make you sing with delight. They also have pumpkin cheesecake and Crème Brûlée with strawberries, candied pecans and whipped cream as well as homemade bread pudding. Happy Hour is every day from 4pm to 7pm on the patio and at the bar and there is a weekly Trivia night. DIG is a wonderful restaurant where you can relax, see friends and enjoy a wonderful healthy meal. Welcome to the neighborhood Heather Dauss and Catherine Murray. We’re glad you’re here. Sear the meat on a hot grill or in a sauté pan on both sides briefly, to rare or medium rare. Place on a skillet and top with the blue cheese. Place the skillet in the oven for about two minutes or until the cheese is slightly melted. Quickly toss together the lettuces, carrots, tomatoes, red onion, brioche croutons and balsamic vinaigrette. Place salad on a chilled or room temperature plate. Can we really believe that our pets will be healthier by ingesting toxic chemicals?

H

ave you ever stopped to think of why we have come to believe that the road to good health is through toxic, chemically laden processed food, synthetic nutritional supplements and processed toxic chemical medicines? Have you ever looked at our environment and wondered how all the plants and creatures on our planet had survived and thrived for thousands of years without humans creating all these chemicals? How can we believe that ourselves and our pets will be healthier by ingesting and being exposed to toxic chemicals? We have to realize that all living things, plants and animals alike have limitations in their lives. Plants sprout, grow, bloom, reproduce and die. For some it may only be a short growing season while others such as trees may live for hundreds of years. Of course, they can sometimes be challenged by stress that occurs in nature. If their food source is depleted or over used by competitive growth, some will become susceptible to death due to disease, insects and other parasites. This same process is true with all creatures including ourselves and our pets.

If our nutrition is grown on tainted soil, sprayed with toxic chemicals and fertilizer, destroyed with cooking and processing and also full of chemical additives, it will affect the health of that creature in a negative way. Our pets are at our mercy for their well-being which includes choosing their diets. Their bodies are designed for very specific digestion of very specific food groups. While the body is designed to compensate when ideal foods are unavailable, this creates less than perfect health conditions. Similar to plants, our pets are at a much higher risk of health challenges and disease when the nutrition is not specific. When the nutrition is less than optimal, the body must move the nutrients to more critical areas to stay alive. A classic example is the shortage of fatty acids and their role in the body. When there is a shortage of the proper fatty acids or their use is blocked by toxic chemicals, dry, itchy skin will occur. This condition can lead to other skin problems such as inflammation, hot spots, fleas, ticks, and even bacterial and fungal infections. Fleas, ticks, parasites, and

other pathogens thrive with immune suppressed animals as their body defense is minimized. While medications, shampoos, topical remedies and parasite treatments can hide the symptoms temporarily, the conditions will reappear and other challenges may develop unless the core causes are addressed. When imbalance is present, it needs to be addressed in a way that provides for the body’s own mechanisms to fully function. Detoxification and ingestion of sound, species appropriate foods are what must be done. This can only occur naturally. Without the right nutrients in the right form and a way to prevent and eliminate toxins, the outcome will be a slow, health challenged death. Why not start the path to health today!!! A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “I’d Rather Have a Root Canal” They say the best set ups and intros are thru friends. Bari used to agree. She literally noticed Charlie from across the bar and pursued an introduction thru a mutual friend who happened to be Charlie’s boss. Instant connection and a bit of attraction found Bari and Charlie getting to know each other better. Game On…. They chatted superficially, exchanged numbers and made plans for their first date. After the date, Charlie stayed connected and interested, sending Bari text messages on all the days they weren’t able to get together. Novel and somewhat sweet at first, it eventually made Bari wonder. Unfortunately, Charlie didn’t practice in the apparent lost art of having a real conversation, voice to voice. Charlie also didn’t really make an effort to get to know Bari, at all. The conversations in person and the few via telephone, were superficial and always about Charlie. He lacked the interest in finding out more about Bari and it drove her crazy. Within one month, they only had three actual “in person” dates and Bari began to question herself and the intentions of Charlie. The progression of getting more in depth, focusing on the emotional/spiritual rather than the physical lacked and it felt like she was spinning her wheels, so to speak. Bari truly felt like the emotional chemistry was lacking so greatly, that it hindered any kind of physical chemistry she could have potentially felt. But every day like clockwork, Charlie would text “Good Morning” and “Good Night” but never “How is your day going?” or “What is going on in

106 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

your world.” He never dug deep and asked Bari about her likes and dislikes, what she wanted and what made her tick. How would this ever materialize in to anything more than casual? Bari doesn’t need an alarm clock, she needs a boyfriend. Fast forward to Bari’s scheduled root canal, an event that Charlie was well aware. On the following morning of her oral surgery, the weather was typical “summer crappy” in Florida. And so it goes… Charlie: “S%itty Day.” Thanks Captain Obvious. I need to point out that Bari just had a painful root canal and doesn’t need a weatherman. She needs someone with a little compassion and maybe another pain pill. Bari: “S%itty Day? I just had a root canal.” Charlie: “Oh that sucks!” It’s pretty safe to say that the lack of concern and compassion was the tip of the iceberg for Bari. But giving Charlie one last chance to prove himself worthy, she accepted his text offer later that day to come over and cook her dinner. In horrible discomfort and just wanting to relax and really be alone, she opened her home and her heart. Charlie just couldn’t keep his hands off of Bari. She recounted that he resembled an octopus on steroids. All Bari wanted was a pain pill and a glass of Cab. She just didn’t have the energy to fight off his “handsy” advances. And more importantly, she didn’t need Charlie’s tongue forcing itself into her already excruciating mouth. Finally, at wits end, she kicked him out. This incident

sealed the deal and it was catalyst for her to end things, once and for all. The next day, Bari called Charlie and told him that she had been doing a lot of thinking and felt that they were better off as friends. His response…CLICK! Yes, you read this correctly. He hung up on her. In utter disbelief that a grown man would actually hang up on her, she called back to hear his lame excuse that his phone “dropped” the call. She asked him if he heard what she said and he told her that the only part he heard was “I have been doing a lot of thinking.” He told her that he knew “exactly what that means.” It’s apparent, this petulant child didn’t like where the conversation was headed so he hung up on her. Nice way to address issues head onjust hang up! At least Bari had the decency to break it off on the phone rather than the new norm of text and email breakups. However, little did she know, her timing actually stinks. She later found out that Charlie took the call on the side of I-95 with a broken alternator in 100+ degree weather. Maybe that’s why he hung up. Well, there really is never a good time, is there? Oops!! Looking back a month later, Bari hasn’t had a second thought about him or regretted calling things off. She learned a valuable lesson that even though it’s nice to have some form of companionship and attention, she wasn’t willing to settle for a man who didn’t have the depth or desire to know more. As they say, if dating is going to be this painful, you might as well go have a root canal. Pain pills anyone? ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus

The Consiglieres These three counselors have a lot in common. All are attorneys who work up to 90 hours a week but are also committed to time with their loved ones. Trying to get them all in one room at the same time was a logistical feat! David Zapitell, Stacy Beaulieu and Jason Dollard all live, work and play in Delray Beach. They also practice law from their various offices in Pineapple Grove. Learn why they chose Delray Beach and the Grove in particular as the perfect place to counsel their clients.

Jason Dollard & Stacy Beaulieau

When I decided to open my own law office there was no other place I wanted to be then Delray, and when Stacy and I decided to buy our own office Pineapple Grove was the perfect fit. The area has such a great atmosphere surrounded by eclectic restaurants and unique shops. I feel like the Grove is a hidden gem right in the middle of all Delray has to offer, and the one minute commute to work doesn’t hurt either.

David Zapitell

Every day is a pleasure when I arrive at my neighborhood office in Pineapple Grove! The members of our small community all support one another, take care of one another and have become friends. I have never been so happy practicing law... one’s environment truly does make a difference! We embrace this philosophy at Zappitell Law Firm by providing service excellence to our clients

We took a ride recently to visit

Abacoa

{

We had a nice lunch at JJ Muggs and decided to walk around the town center before making the long trek back to Delray Beach.

There were about six other people in the restaurant at lunch hour and when we walked around we saw no cars, no pedestrians, no activity and no energy. Sure, it was a hot day in the middle of summer but when we cruised Atlantic Avenue on our way home, we saw lots of people walking, biking, shopping, dining and taking advantage of the shade at Worthing Park. There was life. There was activity. There was energy. In short, Delray Beach is a vibrant place. Even at 3:30 in the afternoon. Even on a very hot summer day. I don’t mean to disparage Abacoa, it’s a very nice place and maybe it was having a bad day, but I raise the issue of vibrancy because when it comes to urbanism and redevelopment it’s the Holy Grail. Vibrancy is what you strive for. It’s what citizens in Delray Beach have dreamt about since the 80s, when Mayor Doak Campbell formed the Atlantic Avenue Task Force in an effort to rejuvenate a decaying downtown. Cities are interesting because they are full of life. It’s fun to walk around a city because you get to experience sights, sounds and other people. You never know who you’ll bump into. The magic of cities happens when those collisions occur. Is the experience always pleasant? No. But it’s life and that’s good. The great place making philosopher Jane Jacobs once said that “the sidewalk must have users on it fairly continuously,

110 September 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

both to add to the number of effective eyes on the street and to induce the people in buildings along the street to watch the sidewalks in sufficient numbers. Nobody enjoys sitting on a stoop or looking out a window at an empty street. Almost nobody does such a thing. Large numbers of people entertain themselves, off and on, by watching street activity.” Delray Beach worked a very long time to attract street activity. Once upon a time it was front page news when a coffee shop named “Java Junction” opened in the site of a long shuttered shoe store. The proprietors were slightly ahead of their time. There wasn’t enough foot traffic and the business closed. Back in the 80s, when vacancy rates downtown were 40 percent and businesses closed for the summer, citizens and elected officials dreamed of a day when Delray would have a parking problem. Vibrancy was the goal; but not an end unto itself. Agree or disagree with whether or not it happened –but the goal was to achieve a vibrant downtown without losing the city’s inherent charm. Thus the tagline of the 2001-02 Downtown Master Plan was “keeping the charm.” The goal was to blend the old with the new, to keep a human scale in terms of building heights and to increase vibrancy by encouraging sidewalk cafes and downtown housing while also creating open spaces and cultural amenities that would appeal to people of all ages. When the long desired parking prob-

lems arrived, new garages were planned, built and financed and surface lots in some cases became parks. These decisions did not take place in a vacuum. Citizen input was solicited at every step along the way. What resulted was a downtown that has achieved national prominence and recognition. City officials from all over the state and nation have visited for ideas and inspiration. They don’t visit to see empty streets. They come to study the elements of what makes a town lively and to bring back ideas that they can use to breathe life into their own cities. The truth is redevelopment has its hits and misses and it’s important to keep iterating, engaging, planning and implementing. There were three takeaways from my experience in Delray that I think still hold true. First, how important it is for the community to be involved. Second, that even if you achieve some success you can’t become complacent—“downtowns are never done” we used to say and third in order to keep a place safe and sustainable—you need vibrancy. Very simple concepts; but not so easy to achieve.
