NIGLON LAUNCHES NEWEST RANGE AND NEW GUARANTEE Niglon’s newest Median range is fast becoming the go-to choice for contractors looking for a clean, simple appearance, and the quick and easy reconfiguration which comes with single screw fixings on all modular switches, says Commercial Director, Paul Dawson. “The products look sleek due to their soft edges, they’re robust, and they’re clean and uncluttered, thanks to matching screw cap covers. In fact, we could talk all day about the features which make the Median products attractive, easy to install, and long-lasting. “But we’re not going to, because we want to concentrate on the differences that you can’t see, and those differences are in the way we operate at Niglon. “In fact, the launch of the Median products coincides with the launch of our Niglon Difference Guarantee. “We’re asking you not to judge a book by its cover – not because there’s a problem with the cover, but because what’s inside is so compelling. “We believe in doing things for the right reason, in aiming not to be the biggest but the best, and in doing what we say we will. In fact, the guarantee was borne out of our conviction that we can, and do, provide that Niglon Difference every single time we supply a product to every single customer we have or ever will have. “So, what exactly is the Niglon Difference?”

LOOK AFTER YOURSELVES

H

ello and welcome to the November issue of ECN. This year has certainly been the most difficult that many of us can remember in our lifetime. Coronavirus, lockdown and the associated worry this has caused with regards to work and finances has taken its toll on many of us, especially with our mental health. A recent study by electrical wholesaler, ERF, suggests that we are not doing enough to take care of ourselves – and that the risk of suicide within the building and construction industry is 1.6 times higher than the national average. There is clearly more we can do to protect ourselves and our colleagues, and ERF and environmental psychologist and wellbeing consultant, Lee Chambers, have put together five tips to help electricians protect and maintain their mental health: •  Don’t be socially distant – making time for friends and family

Test Equipment •  Take care of your physical wellbeing – it’s scientifically proven that physical exercise is one of the best ways to lift your mood •  Eat well – the importance of fuelling your body correctly cannot be understated; having a healthy, balanced diet allows your body to function in the most effective way and gives you a clear and healthy mind too •  Do something for yourself – be sure to make time for yourself, even when you’re busy •  Seek help from a specialist - no matter how big or small your problem may be, you should never feel you need to go through difficult times alone. The Samaritans, your local GP and 111 are available to help.

Carly Wills, Editor

In these difficult times it is so important that we look after ourselves, and each other. INDUSTRY NEWS IET INCREASES MATCH FUNDING SCHEME The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has increased its match funding scheme to £2 million, in order to support and inspire more future engineers. The original target of £1 million, set as part of its 150th anniversary, has been met and the IET has agreed to continue matching donations for its Diamond Jubilee Scholarships, Engineering Horizons Bursaries and Education 4-19 programmes up to the value of £2 million. It’s no secret that there is a skills gap in engineering. This is attributable to a number of factors, including the way in which engineering is perceived by young people, accessibility and routes to entry, as well as how well-resourced teachers are in the classroom and beyond. The IET’s STEM programmes address all these factors and its Awards support aspiring engineers and technicians at a crucial time in their education. IET, theiet.org

RECOLIGHT CELEBRATES RECYCLING THIRD OF A BILLION LAMPS Recolight has announced a major milestone, having funded the recycling of a third of a billion fluorescent and LED lamps and luminaires since the WEEE regulations were implemented in 2007. This is enough waste to fill the Royal Albert Hall 12 times. Operating as a not-for-profit compliance scheme, Recolight’s funds are used to finance a free lamp collection and recycling service for all business end users. A free luminaire recycling service is provided for Recolight’s Producer Members. This way of operating goes above and beyond the strict legal requirements of the WEEE regulations. Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive of Recolight said, “Our Members and collection partners can be very proud that they have achieved this milestone. Their role is integral in making sure we meet the Recolight recycling targets and it is a testament to their dedication to improve lighting recycling in the UK.” The company’s waste lamp collection service continued almost uninterrupted throughout lockdown – although clearly the number of collection requests received dropped significantly. ACT NOW, SAYS PRIVA Time is of the essence if public sector institutions are to take full advantage of the UK Government’s £1bn funding pot for improving energy efficiency, says Priva UK. A manufacturer of intelligent building control technology, Priva is urging local authorities to move quickly to apply for a share of £1bn fund – the detail of which was published by BEIS in October. Application closing dates depend on the type of eligible organisation – ranging from 12 October 2020 to 11 January 2021. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which will be administered and delivered by Salix Finance, will help councils install energy efficiency and low carbon heating measures, reducing energy bills and carbon emissions. The scheme is also expected to create up to 30,000 low-carbon jobs. Priva UK, priva.com

INDUSTRY NEWS FSA CALLS FOR MANDATORY USE OF COMPETENT FIRE PROFESSIONALS A legal requirement to mandate the use of competent fire safety professionals should be introduced, according to a submission from the Fire & Security Association (FSA) to the Government. FSA argues that only competent fire risk assessors and fire professionals (engaged by Responsible Persons) should be able to undertake fire risk assessments. FSA contends that individual competency should include holding a robust, relevant qualification. Furthermore, FSA believes that the recording of all fire risk assessments should become mandatory, and that as part of plans to strengthen the legal basis of the Fire Safety Order, the introduction of an ‘approved code of practice’ would set the requirements. FSA technical director Mike Smith says: “It’s absolutely vital that urgent steps are taken to give householders confidence that buildings and installations are safe and protected against the risks of fire and electric shock. Mandating the use of competent fire professionals who hold robust qualifications is fundamental to this approach, and FSA strongly urges the Government to legislate on this critical issue.” FSA, eca.co.uk

NEW STRUCTURE SETS THE BAR HIGH The Network Infrastructure Industry has developed a new Occupational Qualification Structure leading to Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Card recognition, which aligns with the future of the industry and addresses the need to bring together the wide-ranging skills which exist in the current workforce. Developed by an industry wide group formed of the ECA, JIB, SELECT, CNet Training and a large group of employers, the new Occupational Qualification Structure follows the launch of the Network Cable Installer Apprenticeship Standard. It sets the benchmark for new entrants to the market at Level 3, but also crucially addresses the need to recognise professionals currently in the workforce that already benefit from hands-on experience, previous education and training and industry recognised qualifications. Formerly known as datacomms, the Network Infrastructure Industry covers the installation of data cabling, hardware and other devices which enable computing and communication between users, services and other networked applications. This new pathway clarifies the differences in education, training and experience for those already in the industry, and sets out a route for those entering the network cabling infrastructure industry. From 1 January 2021 all new (initial) applications must comply with the Structure, which includes the requirement for a Network Infrastructure Assessment for those applying for the Network Infrastructure Assistant card. From 1 July 2021 all card renewals will also need to meet the requirements of the new Occupational Qualification Structure.

DP BUILDING SYSTEMS PARTNERS WITH CANCER RESEARCH UK Specialist construction, mechanical and electrical supplier, DP Building Systems, has announced its charity partnership with Cancer Research UK. The partnership has a clear focus of raising £100,000 of funds over the next two years. The charity is estimating a £160m drop in income this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For every product purchased, a donation will go directly towards helping to reduce this shortfall. DP Building Systems and Cancer Research UK are currently working together to launch two products in November 2020, which will feature a Universal 5-in-1 USB Fast Charging Cable which includes the Cancer Research UK branded colours. Rob White, Commercial Director, DP Building Systems, comments: “Our products have been designed to raise much needed donations whilst adding value to everyone’s day-to-day lives, not just a throw away product. The packaging is 99% biodegradable, and the products have all been tested and approved.” The products will be available to purchase from November 2020. DP Building Systems, dpbuildingsystems.co.uk

INDUSTRY NEWS HOW TO EARN A FIVE-STAR REVIEW Electricians that are tidy, professional, punctual, friendly and courteous have the best chance of earning themselves a fivestar customer review, new research shows. Electrical wholesaler ERF Electrical analysed 1,000 five-star Checkatrade reviews to discover the factors that make up an ‘excellent’ review. One in five customers (21%) gave top marks to those that cleaned up after themselves, with those living in Bristol valuing cleanliness above anything else. In Liverpool, Glasgow and Leeds, residents are more likely than anywhere else to praise those that are ‘on-time’; in Liverpool, punctuality was mentioned in 25% of top reviews. The research took into account 100 reviews across 10 major cities, which also included Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leicester, London, Nottingham and Sheffield. Tidiness and friendliness were

SHINING A LIGHT FOR IRISH CONSTRUCTION WORKERS The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is partnering with the Construction Industry Federation to promote better mental health and wellbeing within the Irish construction industry. The charity launched its 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline and app in Ireland in June and it is the only charity providing free and confidential financial, physical and mental wellbeing support dedicated to the construction workforce and their families. The CIF’s recent ‘Mental Health Report’ called for a number of actions to help support the mental health of workers, including ensuring resources are available to develop a positive mental health and wellbeing culture on construction sites. The report also found that only 13% of micro-enterprises have a formal reporting policy. This is despite half of all companies saying mental health issues affected absenteeism in the industry. 94% of companies believe it is critically important the industry improves management of employees’ mental wellbeing. The partnership will ensure that organisations are aware of all the free resources available to them including the 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline and app and a huge variety of mental health and wellbeing training. NAPIT SUPPORTIVE OF SETTING THE BAR REPORT The Final Report of the Competence Steering Group for Building a Safer Future, ‘Setting the Bar – A New Competence Regime for Building a Safer Future’ has been published. The report has been written following engagement with more than 300 organisations and through 13 working groups, with a unified vision to improve the competence of those who work in or on higher-risk buildings (HRB), be that design, construction, inspection or management, as well as focusing on the safety and compliance of products used during the build and future renovations. The report focuses explicitly on the competence of installers working on and in HRB’s and how best to ensure their competence and identify them. Michael Andrews, NAPIT’s Chief Executive Officer comments: “It’s great to see a focus on ensuring the accredited third-party certification of companies alongside the verification of individual competence and supervision playing a key role within the recommendations set out in this report. Accredited company certification allows for insurance and consumer protection requirements to be mandatory and provides a route for monitoring the competence of individuals working for those companies. We fully support the proposal to require all installers working within HRB’s to have a core knowledge of fire safety within buildings and agree that requiring individuals to demonstrate their ability to work within HRBs, through regular third party assessments and CPD is a positive step forward for the industry – especially if authentication is digitalised.” Following the publication of the final report from the Competence Steering Group, it is now up to industry to continue to work together on the implementation phase and ensure the recommendations within the report are put into practice. This work will be closely monitored by the new Building Safety Regulator, being set up within the Health and Safety Executive.

among the top qualities mentioned in nine of the 10 cities. The highest-ranked qualities, according to the percentage of reviews they appeared in, were: •  Tidy/clean (21%) •  Professional (20%) •  Polite/courteous (20%) •  On-time (18%) •  Friendly (16%) •  Reliable (10%) •  Efficient (10%) •  Helpful (7%) The research also reveals that Leicester residents are most likely than anywhere else to praise those with good manners, with one in five (22%) of reviews mentioning the friendliness of an electrician. COVER STORY

NIGLON — PROUD TO BE DIFFERENT Family-run electrical component supplier, Niglon, is proudly launching its Niglon Difference Guarantee, a five-part promise to all its customers about what they can expect from the firm. For the first time, Commercial Director, Paul Dawson, explains what the guarantee is, and why it’s so important.

T

he factors which determine product choice are varied. There are some for whom price is the main factor, safety should be a concern for all, and others might want to offer the end consumer the absolute best quality component on the market. That is why we don’t believe in competing on just one aspect. Niglon doesn’t want to be the cheapest supplier if our team can’t guarantee the products are 100% safe. We don’t want to have components that no one can ever get hold of because we haven’t invested enough time and effort into our stock systems. And that’s why, ultimately, we are making ourselves accountable to contractors, wholesalers and the end consumers by launching our Niglon Difference Guarantee. It’s a promise that we can absolutely deliver in every single one of the five guarantee categories – and we are inviting you all to hold us to account that all five will be of the highest standard every time we sell a product.

Availability

Huge investment in stock has seen product availability soar

A huge investment in the amount of stock held at our Midlands headquarters, and 18 months of intensive testing of the new systems put in place to monitor and order stock, has seen our product availability soar. Long-standing customers have seen a big difference in our On Time In Full order fulfilment rates, and we are now consistently recording stock availability in excess of 99% each month. We guarantee a level of availability which is among the best in the industry, making Niglon a reliable bet when it comes to securing the products you need, when you need them.

Price We believe in offering products at a fair price, and a consistent price across every customer we have. Take, for instance, our Median range – wholesalers are able to buy products from that range at a lower price than the current market leader’s equivalents. That’s not because our products are inferior, or because we’re making a loss when we sell them. It’s because an integral part of the Niglon Difference Guarantee is that we will always sell products at a fair price, enabling wholesalers to pass on that price differential to contractors without losing out themselves, ensuring an even spread of profit down the supply chain – a better way of doing things, we are sure everyone would agree.

Quality The Median range, as with all our Niglon products, is manufactured using high-quality electrical components and materials – and carries a 20 year guarantee. To us, the Niglon name being on a product means we are proud to offer it as part of our extensive catalogue of components, and putting our name to something which isn’t of the highest quality is simply out of the question – now, and always.

Personal service is so important

Safety If you know anything about Niglon, you’ll know we are absolutely steadfast in our belief that products should be independently tested by a third party to ensure they are safe; and we only ever partner with companies who feel the same. We believe certification of products should be openly declared, and proof should be readily available. So, if you ever want to check a Niglon product’s certificate, then all you have to do is ask.

Personal service

The Median range is manufactured using high-quality electrical components and materials

We are not, and never wish to be, a faceless organisation where our customers become nothing more than a number on an order sheet. We’re proud to have the fourth generation of the original founder Stanley Hinley’s family as an integral part of our team: the real definition of a family business! That’s part of the reason why that personal service is so important to us, and why the quality of each interaction we have with wholesalers and contractors matters most to us. It’s not just about how much wholesalers value Niglon, it’s about the entire supply chain including contractors and the end-users too. The Niglon Difference Guarantee: Availability, Price, Quality. Safety and Personal Service. Not just sometimes, but every time. Not just one promise, but all five. Not just now, but forever.  Niglon, niglon.co.uk

CENTIEL PROTECTS THE POWER OF CENTRAL LONDON VENUE In June 2020, Centiel completed the installation of a new UPS to protect the power to a central London venue. Located close to Covent Garden, the entertainment space is within a historical building used for dining, parties and drinks receptions, meetings and conferences for up to 1,000 delegates.

T

Seahorse managed the full design and build, including switch gear

Advertorial – Centiel.indd 14

he new UPS now supports the power for the entire building, including lights, lifts, sound systems, a small gift shop, the internet, phone system and servers. Louis McGarry, sales and marketing director, Centiel UK explains: “An outdated legacy UPS has now been replaced with Centiel’s fourth generation three phase modular UPS, CumulusPower, which offers industry leading 99.9999999% (nine, nines) availability, translating to just milliseconds of downtime per year. One of Centiel’s top cable entry frame fitted with 5x50kW modules (200 N+1), along with 80 batteries, now provides a 10 minute run time which then allows the switch over to a generator to ensure power is protected to the venue at all times. “We worked with Seahorse Electrical and Maintenance Services Ltd on the project, with who we have a long-standing relationship with and have recently completed several large projects with them including a 7.2MW installation at a major medical facility. “For this central London project, Seahorse managed the full design and build from design to completion, working with the main contractor and the client. This included UPS, switch gear, lighting, flooring, ceiling, fire dampeners, battery build, DC build, cable trays and all the cabling, which included 100 metres from the plant room’s switch gear to the generator which was located externally.

Full DC work was completed by Seahorse as a contractor of Centiel’s

“The switch gear that forms part of the plant room had to be delivered in nine separate sections.”

“The main challenge was that the basement plant room at the venue was severely restricted on space and needed to be accessed via a service entrance, through a network of small corridors and flights of stairs. As a result, the switch gear that forms part of the plant room had to be delivered in nine separate sections.” Jason Gibson, director of Seahorse explains: “Due to the limited area, it was important for us to utilise every inch of space and so CumulusPower with its top cable entry option was chosen. The flexible, modular configuration of CumulusPower allows the inclusion of an input terminal to accept cables from above via steel wire armored (SWA). It offered the perfect solution for the small plant room. “The innovative design meant the UPS could be connected from high level, enabling a more flexible layout and maximisation of the use of space. We needed to remove the false ceiling in the plant room to allow for cabling to be run above the switch gear and UPS.” McGarry continues: “Full DC work was completed by Seahorse as a contractor of Centiel’s, which included DC cabling and DC isolation. Seahorse had everything in place ready for our commissioning UPS engineer’s arrival. “Small spaces can be dark and so Seahorse had also installed new low-level lighting to the room to allow better visibility for engineers maintaining the equipment in the future. Emergency lighting was also added in the room.

electricalcontractingnews.com

“In addition, Seahorse recommended that passive fire protection or ‘fire dampers’ were installed in the plant room. The thermoregulated fire damper seals the room and cuts off oxygen in an emergency, therefore, preventing the spread of fire and smoke. “For a unified, professional look, the switch gear, bypass switch and UPS were all produced in the same ‘black’ colour to meet the required end look and quality installation Seahorse aspires to achieve. Seahorse even replaced the flooring and painted the walls to match the system design colour scheme. “The total strip-out and installation for the full build took at total of 15 weeks. As a team we worked very well together and are pleased to confirm Seahorse has now become one of our preferred partners for DC and AC works.”  Centiel  www.centiel.co.uk

MAIN CONTRACTORS ANNOUNCED FOR UK’S FIRST GREENER GRID PARK Statkraft has awarded a contract to Powersystems UK, with civils subcontractor Knights Brown, to undertake the electrical and civil engineering works for a £20 million grid project in Moray, Scotland. Construction is expected to start in the coming months and is due to reach operational stage in autumn 2021. The project, located near the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks transmission substation at Keith will include two large rotating stabilisers designed to provide stable flows of energy through the grid network, helping to increase the amount of renewable energy transmitted on the system and prevent power blackouts. Statkraft was awarded the stability contract as part of National Grid’s Stability Pathfinder Project to meet its ambition that by 2025 the electricity system can be operated at zero carbon. The contract with National Grid provides grid stability services when there are no fossil fuel generators on the system to provide this. There will be an increased demand for this service as the amount of renewable energy generated increases. The two machines at Keith are expected to be up and running in autumn 2021, with another project in Liverpool to follow. Statkraft has received a strong response to a call for local suppliers made in conjunction with Moray Chamber of Commerce, with over 75 registrations of interest received in the first week. SCHOOL’S NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY INITIATIVE Specialist engineers from EA Technology have teamed up with The Queen’s School, an Independent Girls’ School in Chester, to embarked on a new initiative. The project, provisionally titled the Road to Net Zero project, will strive to introduce a range of environmentally friendly measures to reduce the carbon footprint of the school’s science block. EA Technology’s engineers will be working with a group of sixth form students to formulate and implement a programme that will deliver tangible results and benefits. The project has two overarching aims – to attain zero carbon emissions from the school’s science block and to provide the students with some great work and project experience. Once this pilot project is successful, Capenhurst-based EA Technology hopes to be able to roll it out across other schools in the region. Sue Wallace-Woodroffe, headteacher at The Queen’s School says: “The Road to Net Zero combines a desire to raise awareness about the environment, with reducing the carbon footprint at a school and beyond. It also fits perfectly with us wanting our students to work with, and be inspired by, women who have chosen a career in an industry that has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated sector. It’s great that we are able to do this with a locally-based, leading-edge company like EA Technology.” EA Technology, eatechnology.com

JTL CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF TRAINING JTL, the national training provider for electrical, heating and plumbing apprenticeships, is celebrating its 30-year anniversary. Established in 1990 by the Electrical Contractors’ Association and what is now known as Unite the Union, JTL became a registered charity in 2000. Two years on, JTL started offering apprenticeships in plumbing, as well as maintaining its electrical opportunities, with professional short courses being introduced across the country in 2011. Over the years, JTL has also introduced a number of initiatives including a free tool kit scheme, celebrated the achievements of JTL apprentices at its annual Apprentice of the Year awards, as well as supporting and giving back to the building services engineering sector by offering free, bite-size digital courses through its new resource, Power Up. Today, JTL proudly works with over 3,800 businesses, training more apprentices than anyone else in the building services engineering sector, and supporting 8,000 young people across four apprenticeship disciplines (Electrical, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilating and Engineering Maintenance). JTL is an OFSTED recognised ‘good’ provider and, as a registered charity, every penny is reinvested back into the training it offers. Jon Graham, Chief Executive of JTL, says: “We have seen many changes in the industry over the last three decades, and 2020 has certainly been the most challenging to date with the outbreak of COVID-19. JTL recognises that this is a worrying and unpredictable time, so we are continuing to raise the profile and appeal of apprenticeships, as well as supporting both learners and employers, to ensure the pipeline of skilled tradespeople continues. “This year marks a truly special anniversary for everybody involved with JTL as we celebrate 30 years of training people, and continue our vision of supporting our learners with opportunities to build futures and change their lives. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported JTL over the years, from apprentices and staff to employers and industry bodies, plus all those working behind the scenes to help establish JTL as the leading training provider it is today.”

ACTIVATE LEARNING LAUNCHES NEW ELECTRICAL AM2 ASSESSMENT CENTRE Guildford College, part of Activate Learning, has launched a new Electrical Installation Assessment Centre at Guildford College. Known as the AM2 Assessment Centre, the facility is based at the college which is a licensed National Electrotechnical Training (NET) centre authorised to deliver NET assessments for electrical apprentices and trainees. This brand new facility, located on the top floor of the college’s Technology Tower, includes four installation bays and two fault finding bays to complete assessments, as well as close links to the A3/M25 and Guildford Railway Station. The main benefit for local electricians is that they will no longer need to travel to AM2 centres in Southampton or Crawley to update their certificates, saving them time and money. An industry recognised trade test controlled by NET, the purpose of the AM2 assessment is to

ensure all qualified electricians achieve a single standard that has been agreed by employers in the industry. The AM2 assessment is for electrical apprentices/trainees who are training against the Apprenticeship Framework or those who are on an Experienced Worker Programme. For those training against the Apprenticeship Standard, the AM2S must be taken. Both the AM2 and the AM2S assessments are carried out over two and a half days in the centre, covering practical elements and underpinning knowledge of electrical installation procedures, including health and safety, practical installation, fault-finding and an online multiple choice knowledge exam. KEY ISSUE

WHEN DID YOU LAST CHECK YOUR NUTS? As part of SWA’s campaign to raise awareness for men’s health, Sales Engineer Lewis Pickering is sharing his experience with the importance of checking yourself and speaking out.

I

’m a happily ordinary man, with a happily ordinary life that I share with my wife, two sons, elderly parents and new grandchild. It goes without saying that we all try hard to take care of our loved ones, and especially with the difficulties of the last few months, we have all become more conscious of keeping the others around us safe – but that’s not necessarily the case when it comes to our own selves. How many times have we been told to check ourselves out, and been warned of the signs to look out for? But do we do it? I know I would moan at my dad if he were worried and not getting checked out straight away, but would never have the conversation with myself, practising what I preach. This was until the moment that I found a lump where there wasn’t one before. My first thought was that it would go away, surely it would? I felt embarrassed and refused to talk to my friends about my worries, simply because I was brought up not to discuss feelings, as that was seen as a sign of weakness. After a few months, I swallowed my pride, made an appointment and got checked out. I am relieved to say that after various tests and a strong course of antibiotics, it was found to be no cause for concern, after which I was given a clean bill of health. The relief made up for the embarrassment, and the instant removal of stress was overwhelming. We all want that perfect feeling of being happy and well at home, and there is no reason why this can’t also be applied to our installations at work.

20 | November 2020

Key Issue – SWA.indd 20

We all know that detail matters when it comes to our nuts. SWA’s earthing nuts are made of 99% brass and come in seven different size ranges, varying from 20mm to 75mm. They are also supplied with grub screws, connecting bolts and an Allen key, so you won’t have search for long in the toolbox for those elusive bits of kit. The nut is also designed to resist vibration, pretty much like our own – right guys? There is nothing like how it enables a direct high intensity connection for protective earthing – just what we all want from an earthing nut. Everything comes in different shapes and sizes, and SWA’s earthing nuts are no exception to this, but in this case, size does matter to get the right connection. The teeth on the earthing nuts provide voltage equalising connection to the EMI shielding standards, including grinding through the paint to ensure a clean connection. The unique cutting teeth design bites into the wall of the enclosure so the gland can be tightened with one tool from the outside, therefore no screwing is required, meaning that this is the perfect nut to keep you and others safe. Just as much as safety at home matters, the earthing nuts guarantee protection and security in the workplace with a 60% saving in installation time and no compromise on the enclosure IP rating, as well as having the added benefit of fitting right, first time, every time!

electricalcontractingnews.com

SWA’s earthing nut is easy to install, it takes no time at all, and you only need one hand to get the job done. We should do the same for our health and examine ourselves regularly. It doesn’t take much time and only one hand is required! We all experience stresses and strains in our daily lives, at home and work, that can impact our health. In view of this, I cannot stress more highly the importance of getting something that may seem irregular on your body checked out because this can reduce those stresses tenfold. So, get it sorted! Although things have ended well for me, this is not the case for the 2,300 men who are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year in the UK. Together, with continual advancements in medical technology, changing our attitudes and getting checked earlier, we can help change these statistics. Since my diagnosis of ‘all clear’, I have opened up to friends, family and colleagues about the importance of checking yourself. I encourage you to do the same. Check yourself and be safe at work and at home. For more stories like mine and to find out more information about the importance of raising awareness of testicular and prostate cancer, visit Movember.com. Project Focus – Thorn.indd 22

horn’s Steven Gleghorn worked closely with Eugene Tulley from Contractor Litestream Electrical, Darlington, to specify the right combination of luminaires to provide the welcoming ambience required by the retail establishment, whilst showing off the merchandise to its best advantage. The new branch replaces MB Décor’s previous premises that was 30 years old with several units on the same site that were ‘too disjointed’. MB Décor is an independent UK supplier of PVC panelling for walls, ceilings and flooring and manufactures

its own ranges of high-quality wall and ceiling panelling under the Decorwall and Decorceil brands, which is sold both directly and throughout the UK via distributors. “The new unit will make the whole system run a lot smoother, both for trade and retail. It will be a nice environment with ample parking and an 8,000 sq. ft. retail space and more products”, comments Managing Director, Mike Greenup. Working on a brief to supply a good quality, cost effective solution that promotes products to their best advantage, Thorn came up with a design that gives good colour rendition and excellent light levels, whilst meeting the requirements. PopPack and Glacier luminaires were chosen for the sales areas. PopPack provides an easy patented installation method and simple mounting plates for surface mounting and a high efficiency (>110Llm/W) that exceeds the current building regulations. Other benefits include up to 67% reduction in energy consumption, when compared to the traditional fluorescent alternatives and lumen packages from 3000 to 6500lm. The 4000K colour temperature and high colour rendering index of more than 80 makes the fitting perfect for use in retail applications where merchandise has to be illuminated in the best way possible. To compliment these, modern and efficient Glacier LED pendant luminaires with high lumen packages have been installed as an efficient alternative to traditional HID pendants.

“Mike Greenup was pleased with the functional and aesthetically pleasing result, plus the energy savings with instant and controlled illumination.”

electricalcontractingnews.com

The distribution area required daylight dimming, presence control and good quality levels of illumination. HiPak Pro LED was selected as the ideal luminaire for this space. HiPak Pro LED is up to 45% more efficient than 250W/400W alternatives, combining high efficiency (93Llm/W), 50,000-hour lamp life, low maintenance, dedicated individual optics that provide precise light control for high level mounting applications and a robust design. IQ Wave recessed provides excellent uniformity and glare control with direct/indirect illumination in the dispatch area to create a comfortable working environment. Thorn’s Omega LED, Cetus and IQ Wave have been installed in the toilets, accounts department and the canteen. Voyager Star LED provides the emergency lighting throughout. Thanks to its specialised optics, Voyager Star sends light exactly where it is needed in the event of an emergency and, due to wide spacing values, the number of luminaires required can therefore be reduced when compared to other solutions, thus the overall project costs are reduced. Greenup was pleased with the functional and aesthetically pleasing result, plus the energy savings with instant and controlled illumination, commenting, “This development will see us into the next generation.”  Thorn, thornlighting.co.uk

EMITEX INTRODUCES NEW RAPID CRIMP SYSTEM Emitex was established in 2002, and since then has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most recognisable brands in the voice and data networking sector. It is now stocked in nearly 400 electrical wholesalers across the UK, offering the contractor an immediate solution for all of their data needs.

A

ll of Emitex’s data products are manufactured to the highest quality, designed with a host of key benefits for the installer, for fast installation without sacrificing the high performance requirements of the network, and they only incorporate solid copper conductors.

Exceeding standards

All of Emitex’s data products are manufactured to the highest quality

All of the products surpass ANSI EIA/TIA and ISO 11801 cabling standards, which are essential if the contractor is offering a warranty on the installation. Emitex is also happy to announce that all Emitex data cables will meet the new regulatory requirements by being fully CPR rated. The Emitex brand consists of cables, patch panels, outlets, wall and floor cabinets, tools and accessories, all designed for speed and reliability of operation. This means that the installer can easily obtain the full range of products they need to install, set up and run a state-of-the-art system, all from one place. @ElecConNews

Rapid Crimp System When faced with terminating an RJ45 ‘ethernet’ plug for a network, most engineers now realise that a successful termination is difficult. The contacts are flat while the cable is round; the cores are twisted while the channels in the plug require them to be straightened; the performance requirements of Category 5, and particularly Category 6, demand that the cores are twisted as much as possible while the practicalities of termination force the engineer to straighten them. In addition, it is not always easy to confirm the wiring is correct before termination, resulting in wasted time, cable and plugs when errors are discovered. Faced with the challenges, many engineers give up and buy ready terminated leads and avoid terminations when they can. Emitex has a solution – the Rapid Crimp range of plugs and crimp tool. These high quality, high performance plugs give users a new option by enabling quick and accurate terminations. The feedthrough design of the Rapid Crimp plugs enables the engineer to separate the cores before inserting the cable into the plug; the twisted cores can be pulled through the plug, ensuring maximum twist and the wiring can be easily checked before crimping. The result is less wasted time and materials and an alternative approach for the engineer on site. Emitex even has a solution for Category 6A. With the increasing application of POE (Power over Ethernet) and the introduction of the Modular Plug Terminated Link for installations of security cameras and wireless access points, more and more engineers are looking to terminate Cat 6A on site. Rather than leaving them fiddling

/electricalcontractingnews

around at the top of a ladder, Emitex gives them the choice of a field terminable plug which is easy to use and offers true Cat 6A performance. The durable die-cast plug is also suitable for industrial applications. Emitex also offers great peace of mind with its lifetime guarantee. The EM1 system warranty has also been designed to meet all your IT needs, which is why Emitex also offers a lifetime system warranty to all EM1 registered installers upon providing copies of the category 5E/6 permanent test link results. If any problem should occur, all EM1 registered installers have the full backing of Emitex. In the event of product breakdown, the warranty covers the repair or replacement and installation costs of restoring the Emitex system.

CABLING: PUTTING FIRE SAFETY FIRST Fire is one of the one of the oldest and biggest threats to daily life, despite constant health and safety improvements across the European Union that have seen the numbers of fire deaths plummet by 65% across Europe over the last 30 years, and by 56% across the UK, writes Chris Smeeton, Director of Argosy.

F

ire still kills 4,000 people across Europe every year, puts 70,000 people in hospital linked to fire and smoke injuries, and costs over €126bn a year. Seeing as Europeans spend around 90% of their time living inside buildings, and because fire causes so much financial damage to the economy, alongside tragic and avoidable loss of life, ascertaining the fire safety of products has to be everyone’s number one priority. It’s not been an easy task however, because although construction materials and buildings have changed dramatically in recent years, many of the regulations that monitor their fire safety have been inefficient. With a view on continuing to improve existing fire safety measures in the area of construction, the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) became mandatory in July 2017 across the EU and the UK for both civil engineering and buildings construction. This regulation applies to any cable product intended for use in permanent infrastructure, now considered a construction material that must be manufactured to the highest of fire safety standards. In short, the use of low fire hazard cabling can reduce the danger in the event of a fire and the onus is on the manufacturer to give customers details about cabling products,

outlining their fire performance according to certain criteria, including flame spread, heat release, smoke production, flaming droplets and acidity of emissions. That is why Argosy has been working with partners Prysmia, Draka and Belden, and with its own internal team, to roll out the higher-rate CPR-grade cabling that meets the recommended European fire protection norms. Different levels of fire performance are required in different contexts, whether a cable is linked to an escape route, a high density area, or a lower density office building. Argosy has been actively promoting fire safety and cabling in accordance with the CPR for a number of years. Its Image cable range, as well as its DA-110 Digital Audio cable range, are CPR rated and come with DOP (Declaration of Performance) certification. Last year, the company delivered a range of cables to broadcast engineering and sports stadia facility specialist TTL Video for installation into three football stadia, as part of a major upgrade for clubs promoted to the Premier League. The upgrade included the provision of 30+ kilometres of fire retardant triax cabling, SMPTE hybrid cabling and eight-way COAX cabling from Argosy. The cable profiles were driven by the production requirements of the international broadcasters who cover the matches and by the leading UK outside

electricalcontractingnews.com

broadcasting units that are stationed at the stadia on match days. Depending on the match, there can be up to 15 different broadcasters vying for infrastructure at the same time. Argosy delivered 10km of Draka higher-rate CPR grade HD triaxial video cable, the first triaxial cable on the market to meet the recommended UK fire protection norms. TTL Video was the first company in the UK to use this innovation by Draka. Argosy also delivered 14km of SMPTE copper and fibre hybrid camera cable, to support HD and 4K signals; 8km of triax copper camera cable (well adapted to protecting broadcast signals in the harshest of environments) and 9km of Belden eight-way star quad digital audio multicore cable. The Belden cable runs in a star formation to reduce the likelihood of noise affecting signals, installed in the gantries and TV studios around the pitch. Ultimately, it’s important to remember that the risks linked to fire are still a very real danger in today’s world, and that it is crucial for all actors in the construction industry to be CPR-compliant when it comes to cabling, and to avoid taking risks by choosing to work with a knowledgeable manufacturer that tailors a choice of fire-safe cabling to each scenario.  Argosy, argosycable.com

CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT

BUILDING THE CLOUD Claranet turned to Connectix when building its third multi-million-pound ‘Building the Cloud’ data centre, built to deliver next generation network and hosting infrastructure services.

T

he company had engaged with rack and cabling manufacturers to assess the equipment solutions required to support and empower its data centre services but it was clear that the main suppliers offered their products as a one-size-fits-all basis, and that left some major design problems. Dan Cooper, Head of Data Centres, started discussions with Connectix about the facility environment, footprint and design. It was clear that Claranet would need flexibility in rack design, coupled with a cabling infrastructure with impressive headroom to support the network traffic and bandwidth expectations. Throughout the project design, Claranet’s data centre management and engineers were able to modify rack designs to produce a ‘ClaranetSpecification’ rack that exactly matched the requirements of the facility and installation. This flexibility provided the right security features, cable management and installation requirements, and environmental performance for airflow and management. The main cable management requirement was for bespoke rack and cable pathway designs in order to distribute, support and protect the network cabling.

Phase 1 Claranet’s hosting centre for cloud services within Hoddesdon includes state-of-the-art connectivity and storage equipment. This saw the installation of 12 42U 600w x 800d CCS-ClaranetSpec Racks and two CCS-Claranet Spec Patching Frames.

The project consisted of building and placing racks, bay and earth racks and pre-cable all fibre and copper links ready for Claranet IT engineers to install, and commission active switching and routing hardware:

Claranet’s engineers were able to modify rack designs to produce a ‘ClaranetSpecification’ rack that exactly matched the requirements of the facility and installation.

•  Storage racks •  Patching frames •  1056 LC fibre connections, utilising 96 1U fibre panels (quad LC multimode OM3) •  Remote racks interlinking to the patch frames using 24 core links, consolidated to patching frames to save space •  192 copper Cat 6 UTP LSZH Links (mainly deployed as harnessed switch looms for Cisco 6500 blade servers) •  Top of rack cable trough pathway system

Phase 2 Phase 2 incorporated an additional six 42U 600w x 800d per row (12 cabinets). Twenty-four fibre connections and 12 copper links were deployed for additional cabling per cabs, and hosted cloud services were extended.

Phase 3 In Phase 3, further storage racks were added to house a state-of-the-art 3PAR SSD storage platform. Twelve 42U 600w x 1000d Claranet-Spec Racks were also added. Claranet needed to segregate two networks to ensure dual-path operation and, working with Connectix, the equipment rack fibre optic patch panels were powder-paint sprayed orange and blue to signify SAN and data networks.

The cable looms were all protected within braided sleeving. Additional installation in Phase 3 included: •  2368 fibre terminations – duplex LC, quads at the main ends •  20 x Cat 5e UTP, 42 x Cat 5e Elite HD patch panels •  Cable management dump panels 1U and 2U for a neat finish •  Fluke DTX-1800 tested and manufacturers 25-year warranty By partnering with Connectix Cabling Systems for the design and supply of cabling infrastructure solutions, Claranet’s data centre management team were able to have a proactive input in the design of racks used within collocation facilities for its impressive set of clients. Cooper explains, “I have worked closely with Connectix Cabling Systems from the design stage to ensure that racks and cabling infrastructure could be tailored to Claranet’s needs to improve project deployment, cable management and our data centre environment efficiencies. The data centre rack cable trough system gives us easy access and maximum use of our data centre space, and is quickly supplied and installed, minimising our engineering downtime. Claranet needs forward thinking technology vendors and Connectix and Phoenix Optics provide a great working relationship to meet our IT project strategies”.  Connectix Cabling Systems, connectixcablingsystems.com

MT: Like everybody, we saw trade drop quite sharply towards the end of March, and certainly into April and May. However, we have seen a strong recovery from June onwards, which I believe was helped by the fact that we sell into markets (like construction) that typically returned to more normalised working conditions quicker than some other sectors. We have just finished September trading, where we traded above pre-COVID levels, which is very positive. We remain cautious but optimistic for the future. CW: Have you seen any changes in customer/buyer behaviour in these recent months? MT: We have a strong web presence – both FS Cables and Cablecraft have websites with e-commerce functionality and we have been gaining significant numbers of new customers on a monthly basis throughout this COVID trading period, which has resulted in a substantial rise in online revenues.

/electricalcontractingnews

The consolidation of Cablecraft and FS Cables will result in a strengthened offer that will underpin the Group’s future growth

We are seeing more customers spot ordering and buying on a needs only basis, but this is fine by us as we understand our role is to hold the right stock and stock levels to meet our customer’s needs when and where they want it. We have also seen a number of our OEM and larger contractor customers keen to ringfence inventory for themselves, with an upfront order commitment called off as they require it. CW: What have you learned through   this COVID-19 trading period? MT: It has reaffirmed the importance of maintaining first class customer service levels and ensuring good stock availability. We also learnt what a fantastic team we have and how resilient and committed they to our company. They demonstrated with their actions and attitude a collective goal of wanting to ensure we continue to have a strong business for the future. CW: What is the outlook and key aims for your business over the next 12 months? MT: We are targeting growth in some specific targeted areas including export, e-commerce and new products and services additions – we are typically looking to bring out a new product or service each month. We are well positioned and have a really good offer to take to our customers, and as Shoal Group, with the team we have in place I believe we have a fantastic future in front of us and this business will go from strength to strength.  shoal-group.com  fscables.com   cablecraft.co.uk

CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT

COLLABORATION DELIVERS UK’S MOST CONNECTED BRIDGE A partnership between manufacturer, contractor and distributor delivers successful cable management solutions for one of the world’s most advanced bridges.

T

he landmark Queensferry Crossing Bridge in Scotland is almost certainly one of the most efficient, high performance bridges ever built, incorporating a complex array of utilities and communications equipment. Constructed alongside the iconic Forth Road Bridge, the Queensferry Crossing replaces that bridge as the main road route north from Edinburgh, carrying the M90 motorway across the Firth of Forth. Officially opened in September 2017, the Queensferry Crossing took six years to complete and forms the centrepiece of a major upgrade to the cross-Forth transport corridor in the east of Scotland. It represents an investment of more than £1.3bn and is truly world class, setting a number of national and international records, including the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world. A partnership between cable management specialist, voestalpine Metsec plc, M&E fixings supplier in Scotland, MEF, and lead M&E contractor, SES Engineering Services, has been critical in ensuring the delivery of the systems that support the 2.7km road bridge and assure its safe and efficient running for decades to come.

A major logistical project The bridge deck is constructed from 122 composite steel/concrete sections. 250-tonne steel sections were manufactured in China and shipped to Rosyth docks, where they were then prefabricated to incorporate the services and road surfaces. The cable management systems supplied by Metsec were prefabricated into 424 modules by SES and then installed into each of the finished 750-tonne road section decks before being delivered to site by barge along the River Forth and craned into position to span between the bridge towers. All cable management products had to be pre-approved by the bridge authority, Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors. With the support of Metsec’s technical team, thermal extension couplers were designed and incorporated into the project’s cable management systems to help compensate for the movement caused by temperature fluctuations, wind and traffic.

Reliability and quality

A collaborative approach

“All cable management products had to be pre-approved by the bridge authority, Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors.”

Gordon Cullen, project manager at SES, explains, “Whilst we have a lot of experience in major infrastructure developments, the Queensferry Crossing was a once-in-a-lifetime project that demanded a highly collaborative approach to ensure we could meet and match the exact requirements to deliver all of the component parts of the bridge on time and in budget. “MEF are part of the SES-approved supply chain and they selected Metsec, not only because they were the best from a commercial and quality point of view, but because they were able to supply the cable management systems we needed in special sizes – vitally important in terms of minimising waste and ensuring ease of fit. Particularly important was their willingness to adapt the units to minimise the number of joints required. Everything was spot-on in terms of enabling the teams to fabricate and install each unit on schedule.” Metsec supplied hot dip galvanised cable tray and cable ladders cut to special lengths; the trays to 3.5m and the ladders to 6.9m. The finished modules assembled by SES hold a complex array of water management and cabling needs from lighting and power to traffic management systems, security, fire alarms, radio communications, structural health monitoring and building monitoring – all designed to give optimal control over the management and performance of the bridge.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Alastair Fairweather at MEF adds: “This was a fantastic project to work on and much of our involvement has been down to the support we have had from Metsec. We have worked with them for several years now and we knew that they would be vital to us winning this contract. The sizes needed were not standard, but Metsec’s UK-based manufacturing facilities gave us the option to offer a flexible, high-quality solution to SES that we knew Metsec could deliver on time and in budget. In fact, flexibility was critical, not just in securing the project, but in meeting evolving requirements as the project progressed over the 12 to 18 months we were there. “We put a lot of faith in partnering with Metsec for what was one of the biggest projects we have ever worked on and it has really paid off. The reliability and quality of service from the Metsec team has been as important as the quality of the products they supplied. The 55-micron hot dipped galvanised steel tray and ladder systems used will need to endure exposure to the elements for up to two years before being completely sealed-in under the bridge, and the high quality of the Metsec product will contribute to keeping the whole-life costs of the project down.” Jon Hillier, Director at Metsec Cable Management, adds, “The Queensferry Crossing project was something we were keen to be involved in from the start. We knew we had the capability to re-programme our mills to allow us to manufacture the specified lengths of ladder and tray in a way that would fit perfectly into the required modules. “Working with MEF meant that we were also able to offer the just-in-time capabilities needed to support the tight pre-fabrication scheduling for each of the bridge’s deck sections. It is great to see the bridge finished and fully operational, knowing that our products are supporting the complex systems that will assure the functionality of this impressive infrastructure showpiece and help drive transport connectivity in the region for years to come.”  Metsec Cable Management, metsec.com

CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT

CONTAINMENT SUSPENSION — THE ULTIMATE FLEXIBLE SOLUTION Wire ropes have, for decades, been used in engineering, mining, the construction of bridges, securing ships at the dock side, lifting and transporting and countless other engineering roles.

W

ire rope systems for use in the electrical installation industry can provide a significant benefit in reducing the prime cost of cable management, applying highly flexible, innovative and fully accountable suspension solutions. There are several levels of prime cost saving for cable management installations, of which the use of wire rope in place of threaded rod is one. Knowledge of IEC61537 – Cable Ladder and Tray Standard – and understanding the manufacturer’s performance criteria, along with the use of fast fit nut and bolt-free systems, offers the potential for further savings and it does not stop there. Multi-compartment in place of multiple runs, increasing the spacing between brackets and reducing the material content, for example, all add to the potential for considerable savings. Queen’s Award Winner, Zip-Clip, has been providing wire rope solutions for over 16 years. In that time the company has worked with major contractors and clients both in the UK and overseas, and has built an enviable reputation for service, quality, accountability and reliability. The suspension of containment has three aspects which need to be considered: •  The fixing to the substrate •  The height at which it is to be suspended •  The load to be supported, which includes cable and the containment system

A certified pulltesting service ensures substrate fixings are sound

32 | November 2020

Cabling & Cable Management – Zip-Clip.indd 32

Zip-Clip can provide complete suspension and bracing solutions

Early supplier engagement with the client, specifier and installer allows time for the optimum solution to be considered, evaluated and provided. However, this is often overlooked, as many view this element of a project to be mundane – commodity products supporting commodity products! It is important to take the time to fully discuss and understand the scope of a project, priorities and concerns and, as with any suspension solution, it is essential to understand and appreciate the products to be suspended and to work with designers and manufacturers to ensure the solution ticks all requirement boxes. As a manufacturer, Zip-Clip is able to provide complete suspension and bracing solutions. The company is also available to offer detailed advice and guidance, ensuring projects are completed using as few components as possible, applying relevant standards, with total accountability, while at the same time delivering prime cost savings. A certified pull-testing service ensures substrate fixings are sound, prior to project completion and sign-off. Zip-Clip wire rope is a premium product with a tensile strength of 1960N/mm2. It is available in load ranges from 15kg to 500kg and all solutions are designed with a built-in safety factor of at least 3:1. This level of performance and accountability provides the confidence to use wire in place of threaded rod. “Zip-Clip wire rope suspension really does live up to the claims,” says Wayne Palmer, Mechanical Supervisor, SES

electricalcontractingnews.com

Engineering Services. “I think we are now installing containment and radiant panels in half the time it was taking us to install them with 10mm rod.” With space on site becoming a premium, wire rope offers countless benefits and is today being specified for an ever-increasing range of applications where threaded rods were once the only option. It is possible to carry sufficient wire and clips to site in a rucksack to manufacture 200 one metre suspensions – not something that could be replicated with threaded rod and associated components! A single trapeze bracket manufactured using wire rope uses 50% less components, weighs 50% less and can be installed in a third of the time. Innovation is the future and Zip-Clip intends to be an integral part of that future. The company is investing heavily in people, R&D, advanced automation and robotics. A number of important new products are in the pipeline – some being released soon, which are geared specifically at electrical containment and designed in consultation with electrical contractors, addressing their specific suspension needs. “Zip-Clip have always supported Central Electrical Distributors to the hilt,” says Lee Robinson, Director, Central Electrical Distributors. “They are a key partner, offering a top-quality product highly rated by contractors and their all-round service is second to none. They are always ready to help on the phone or with on site visits.”  Zip-Clip, zip-clip.com

CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT

REDUCING THE INTERACTION OF COVID-19 The current serious global situation, due to the COVID19 pandemic, is significantly affecting the health, social, and political structures of all countries and governments. That is why it is necessary, from a health point of view, to search for solutions to mitigate or reduce the interaction of this virus, or other types of bacteria and microbes, creating safer and more hygienic facilities, infrastructures and spaces.

C

able management systems, among which are the wire mesh trays, joint accessories and support elements, form an important part of the essential infrastructures or facilities in the supply of energy to hospitals, health centres, operating rooms, intensive care units (ICU) and other buildings related to health, including public places such as schools, universities, and offices. The ceiling location of the cable tray systems in these buildings means the installation is of vital importance to avoid the depositing of dirt and pathogens, as well as to promote the reduction of the spread of viruses and bacteria that can accumulate in these spaces and descend to the rooms of a health centre or spread through ventilation or A/C systems.

Hygienic sanitary solution – SAFECu

“Pemsa has developed a specific SAFECu finish based on copper, which is a powerful antimicrobial against pathogenic bacteria.”

In order to reduce this interaction, Pemsa has developed a specific SAFECu finish based on copper, which is a powerful antimicrobial against pathogenic bacteria. In this way, it reduces the survival of the current SARS-CoV-2 virus and others, as well as pathogenic bacteria, to less than four hours. Prestigious entities such as the ASM (American Society for Microbiology) or the New England Medicinal Journal of Medicine have published studies analysing the behaviour and survival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on different material surfaces (see below).

Copper is the only metal certified as a bactericidal agent registered by the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) as an antimicrobial agent, highlighting its action against bacteria related to potentially fatal infections, among which are the influenza virus A (H1N1) or the SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Copper has a proven bactericidal effect on the following bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli O157: H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Other scientific studies (Kiwa Water Research, 2007) show that, in facilities made with copper as a material, this metal kills all bacteria at a temperature of 25°C, while other surfaces such as PVC-C and PEX need up to 60°C to eradicate the bacteria. In addition, the scientific literature confirms that copper has an inhibitory effect against fungi, since it deactivates and prevents its growth, as well as against yeast, bacteria and viruses (polyvirus and rotavirus type).

Advantages Pemsa’s SAFECu copper finish presents the following additional advantages. •  Electrolytic copper plating treatment, which allows the adhesion of a uniform layer of copper with its hygienic, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, based on the elimination of these microorganisms when they come into contact with copper for a certain time and contrasted in various scientific investigations with analysis in specialised laboratories. •  Total protection throughout the useful life of the product without problems, due to the aging of the copper, taking into account the minimum maintenance defined in these facilities. •  This coating is recommended for interiors and environments classified with corrosivity category C1 and C2, defined in Table C.1 of Annex C of ISO 9223.

electricalcontractingnews.com

•  Another benefit of this finish is that copper improves the electrical continuity of the cable tray system by 50% due to the intrinsic properties of this metal. The application of the Pemsa SAFECu system as a sanitary hygienic solution is essential for: •  ICU units and operating theatres •  Rooms and waiting areas of health centres and hospitals •  New hospital projects, including temporary facilities •  Residences for the elderly and care centres •  Universities, colleges, teaching centres •  Office buildings, shopping centres, theatres, sports facilities, etc.

Product features Pemsa applies its SAFECu finish to a complete product range of cable trays, supports and accessories that additionally have the following characteristics: •  Open structure of rejiband and rejitech mesh trays that favours the ventilation and cleaning of the installation in order to maintain its properties. •  Two metre length – compact size for confined spaces and facility renovations. •  Surface shaped with rounded rods, therefore avoiding edges and reducing contact surface. •  50% improved electrical continuity, thanks to the copper plate finish. •  Complete product range – wire mesh trays, joints, accessories and supports all with the SAFECu copper finish, guaranteeing the same protection for the entire system. It is important not to mix with other finishes in order to guarantee proper antibacterial and antimicrobial protection. •  SAFECu products are supplied in a closed protective packaging, avoiding any possible contamination. •  All the experience of rejiband and Pemsa in cable management systems.  Pemsa, pemsa.co.uk

However, we have undoubtedly stepped up our commitment to introducing new key products onto the market during the past 12 months. “In more recent months, we have seen the launch of our industry leading three compartment dado, SLXL PVC-LSF (lower smoke) range as well as the new power pole and PVC cable tray, all of which have been introduced during or post lockdown, in what we recognise as an extremely challenging time for the industry (and society in general). We believed pressing ahead with product development and innovation remained a priority during this time and sent out a clear and bold message to our customers and our industry in terms of commitment to retaining our promise and supplying in line with demand. “I’m pleased to say that the response has been incredibly positive. We are now at a stage where we own a complete product range and one that includes what could arguably be described as the safest PVC trunking range available on the market today. “Whilst a three compartment trunking range is not unique to Univolt – we recognise that there are other competitor products available on the market – it is the specification that is the ultimate differentiator which, in our case, includes PVC-LSF, and so this has been an incredibly exciting development for Univolt that will naturally set us apart.” Offering a higher ignition point of up to 15% than standard PVC, the halogens contained within the products are released at a slower rate, therefore, smoke release is also reduced by up to 65% in the first four minutes of a fire.

Davis continues: “The SLXL product range has been under development for some time from our headquarters in Austria. Not only does it essentially complete the Univolt range catering for Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat8 and OM3 Fibre Optic cables, but it now offers far reaching safety benefits through its slow burning fire resistant properties. SLXL offers customers something entirely different, combining functionality and aesthetics with safety and durability, as well as delivering a future proof cabling solution. “We are already seeing Cat8 being installed within data centres, delivering 2000MHz bandwidth, representing three times more than Cat 6A. Whilst we don’t envisage this having any major impact on the commercial market for the next 12 months, this product essentially future proofs any cable containment system. “Safety has and continues to be the most pressing element when approaching any electrical installation. With relatively little price differentiator between PVC and PVC- LSF, and with very few other manufacturers offering this specification, we see this as an easy choice to make.” The introduction of SLXL effectively completes the Univolt cable containment range, reinforcing the one-stop-shop ethos with supporting wire basket systems, including quick fit accessories. Davis adds: “We recognised the need to introduce this latest generation of cable management system in response to the needs of our electrical wholesaler customers. The wholesaler is keen to offer as much choice as possible to today’s installer, whose requirements are based around speed of installation with the latest product features to distribute advanced data cabling through differing environments. We’re proud to have taken this approach a step further.” The firm is also one of only a handful of companies to offer a PVC cable tray, a move that has taken place only in recent weeks. This product has been developed specifically to meet the needs of aggressive or coastal environments, providing a lasting and durable cable containment solution. Davis explains: “We have long supplied wire basket, but we are now

The new power pole

offering a PVC alternative, where this type of material is better suited to a harsher environment.” The PVC tray utilises corrosion-free and UV stabilised properties, which provide ultimate protection against coastal and corrosive environments, guaranteeing a long and lasting product life. Davis adds: “Not only does the tray deliver the perfect properties to meet this type of environment, but it is also lightweight and therefore easy to handle and transport, as well as being simple to cut to length, therefore saving time and cost on installation.” The company’s latest aluminium white power pole (PP2WT), introduced into the UK market earlier this year, has been designed with an adjustable telescopic arm for ease of installation. The power pole sits at 3.5m and is extendable up to 3.95m, with the option of an extra extension kit (PP2EXT) at 2.5m, offering an overall height of 6m. With the majaroity of buildings now having to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), Univolt has launched a range of products incorporating a ‘light grey lid’, including the new power pole, three compartment SLXL-LSF and bench trunking, enabling a 30% contrast between a white trunking and white socket, for those with impaired vision. Davis continues: “For us, creating the ultimate and complete cable containment range remains our driving force. Whilst we continue to introduce products that are also available via other manufacturers, certain products are more bespoke and unique to Univolt. “Building a range that meets the need of every specifier or contractor, in any project or environment remains our end goal. We are undoubtedly leading the way in safe trunking solutions in terms of fire prevention, and this will continue to set us apart. However, we understand that some customers are keen to continue to focus on the more traditional lines and so we must also offer this in response. “There are more products under development from our headquarters in Vienna and we look forward to making further announcements this year and into 2021.”  Univolt, dietzel-univolt.com

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

THE BIGGEST UPGRADE OF THE NATION’S BUILDINGS IN A GENERATION Homes, schools and hospitals across England are set to be greener and cheaper to run thanks to a £3 billion plan to upgrade the nation’s buildings – the biggest in a generation.

H

omeowners can sign up for big savings on upgrades to their homes under the government’s £2 billion Green Homes Grant, with an additional £1 billion announced to improve the energy efficiency of publicly owned buildings. The Green Homes Grant scheme will see the government fund up to two-thirds of the cost of home improvements up to £5,000. Those homeowners with low incomes, including those on certain benefits, are eligible for a grant covering up to 100% of the cost of works up to £10,000. The scheme will improve the energy efficiency of over 600,000 homes. Grants will be offered to cover green home improvements ranging from insulation of walls, floors and roofs, to the installation of double or triple glazing when replacing single glazing, and low carbon heating like heat pumps or solar thermal – measures that could help households save up to £600 a year on their energy bills. It will cut people’s energy bills and carbon emissions, whilst also supporting over 100,000 jobs in green construction for local plumbers, builders and tradespeople across the UK. The launch of the Green Homes Grant forms part of a wider plan to upgrade the nation’s buildings – expected to support an additional 120,000 jobs – which also includes: •  £1 billion to boost the energy efficiency of public buildings, including schools and hospitals through a Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund •  New measures to ensure nearly three million privately rented homes are upgraded to modern energy efficiency standards by 2028 •  £50 million to improve the energy efficiency of social housing Chancellor Rishi Sunak says, “We promised to support jobs and protect the environment – and the Green Homes Grant delivers on this. We’re giving homeowners, landlords and local authorities the funding they need to hire local tradespeople and make our homes more energy efficient. By supporting the green van men and women, we’ll save money, save jobs and save the planet.” £500 million of the Green Homes Grant scheme has been assigned for local authorities to provide green home improvements for households with an income of under £30,000.

The plan includes £1bn to boost the energy efficiency of public buildings, including schools

Tenants will also benefit from the government’s plan to boost energy efficiency, thanks to proposals for the private rental sector. The improvements will be achieved by raising the energy performance standard of privately-rented properties, with landlords having to ensure homes meet Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Band C requirements. These could save nearly three million homes an average of £220 a year on their annual heating bills and lift up to 900,000 low income households out of fuel poverty. The plans could also support 90,000 jobs in the energy sector annually. Costs will be capped at £10,000 and landlords can take advantage of the Green Homes Grant to fund the necessary improvements. The private rental sector measures are being phased in to limit the disruption to both landlords and tenants, with improvements having to be implemented for new tenancies from 1 April 2025 and for all tenancies by 1 April 2028. In a further boost, the government is making £50 million available for social housing through a demonstrator project for the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF). This UK-wide demonstrator scheme will see grants supplied to upgrade the energy efficiency of over 2,000 of the

worst-performing social homes. It is estimated that those living in upgraded properties will save between £300 and £500 on their energy bills each year. As well as helping meet the country’s net zero emissions target, the SHDF Demonstrator will support up to 3,200 jobs in the green energy sector. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) will help public sector organisations in England, including central government departments and their agencies, local authorities, schools and NHS Trusts, to install energy efficient and low carbon heating measures, reducing energy bills and carbon emissions. Installations under the PSDS are expected to support up to 30,000 low carbon jobs. This energy efficiency plan forms part of the government’s wider efforts to ensure the UK meets its legally binding target to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and build back greener from coronavirus. Over the past decade, the UK has cut carbon emissions by more than any similar developed country. In 2019, UK emissions were 42% lower than in 1990, while the country’s economy over the same period grew by 72%.  UK Government, gov.uk

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

USING IOT ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS TO CREATE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS OF THE FUTURE Public awareness of global warming is ever-increasing, with more individuals taking steps to decrease their carbon footprint, writes Kas Mohammed, VP of Digital Energy at Schneider Electric. With one degree of global warming, we are already seeing the consequences of our energy inefficiency, in the form of more extreme weather and rising sea levels.

Kas Mohammed, VP of Digital Energy at Schneider Electric

A

ccording to the IPCC, even if the current global environmental policies are met, it is predicted that global warming will rise by almost four degrees by 2100, compared to pre-industrial levels. Whilst this is a significant improvement from the predicted effects without any action, it remains considerably above the two degrees regarded as the tipping point at which we will see irreversible effects, including severe heatwaves and droughts, and coastal flooding. With cities accounting for 80% of the world’s energy consumption, and buildings being the largest contributor, it is clear that we need to decarbonise our urban environments on more than an individual scale. Commercial and industrial scale change is needed urgently in order to mitigate these risks. Whilst we are seeing a rise in sustainable technology, zero carbon cities must be the end goal we are working towards. An entire sustainable city sounds daunting, but, like any seemingly impossible task, we must first break it down and tackle the major issues. Looking specifically at buildings, we must address the way we use and manage our electrical infrastructure and set KPIs to reduce consumption, particularly within those which are large and critical. Electrical infrastructures in buildings are complex by nature and require some level of intelligence to function efficiently. In order to monitor and maintain this infrastructure within large and critical facilities, an energy management system, ranging from high level metering to more comprehensive solutions, is necessary. As with any effective system, total output is greater than that of the individual parts. The key to driving greater results and efficiencies lies in creating higher levels of communication, simplifying management and maintaining supply.

Harnessing the benefits of the IoT With an increase in the data collection methods and comprehensive analytics, there is now an opportunity for energy management systems to drive hyper-efficiency, empowering facility owners with choices that benefit both their facilities and the environment.

40 | November 2020

Energy Management – Schneider.indd 40

The new generation of energy management systems harnesses the benefits of connected technology. This is achieved through a variety of IoT enabled devices modelled on a single online platform, which ultimately provides heightened visibility into the entire infrastructure from a web interface. The volume and variety of data points collected allows for in-depth, holistic analysis of an entire electrical infrastructure, rather than individual assets or isolated systems. Data is collected in terms of: •  Energy consumption •  Power quality •  Temperature •  WAGES •  Oil levels •  Demand/usage Using trends, heat maps, benchmarking and forecasting, amongst other methods, to analyse this data gives full visibility into system performance and opportunities for optimisation. Real-time monitoring and tracking not only provides event alarms related to benchmarking and compliance but also the trends leading up to these events, allowing for predictability in the case of recurrence. If an alarm is identified on a particular system, it is also possible to look at a virtual single line diagram inclusive of data readings to determine the causes upstream and consequences downstream of the event.

Decentralised monitoring With the current needs for decentralisation and remote working, it is not just logical, but necessary to be able to effectively monitor electrical infrastructure regardless of proximity. With IoT energy management systems it is possible to monitor and/or control assets and systems from a web interface, removing the need for physical intervention and on-site presence. If an event has occurred on a system, it can be located and isolated through the web platform. This allows a maintenance team to fix the issue more efficiently, potentially reducing consumption through preventing malfunctions such as overheating by minimising the time to interact with the system.

Ensuring efficient operations Large facilities will usually contain a range of critical assets such as servers, medical equipment, CCTV, lifts, fire systems, lab equipment and many more. These tend to be power intensive and sensitive to power quality disturbances. Power quality disturbances come about when the electrical waveform supplied is not smooth but rather suffers from harmonics, voltage sags and swells or spikes. These may cause noticeable faults or failures in the assets, but more commonly they will slowly degrade the equipment and increase its electrical consumption. The effect of this on the sustainability of a building is not solely caused by the unnecessary increase in power consumption, but also the lowering of design life, which can result in premature failure and replacement of equipment, leading to an increase of electrical waste in landfill. Sub-optimal power quality will also cause an increase in unusable reactive power, brought about by a phase shift between current and voltage waveforms. This unusable reactive power is incorporated in the total kWh charge on an energy bill and may also incur an additional fee if the root cause is traced back to the facility internally. Identifying these issues and acting on them promptly will minimise consumption and pinpointing the root cause will allow for corrective equipment to be installed at an optimal location. With advanced reporting options one can see a clear summary of system performance and if events have likely occurred due to issues within or outside of the facility. In the case of an internal cause it is easy to see the source of the disturbance and its financial and operational impacts.  Schneider Electric, se.com

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

WHY FIRE SAFETY AND SECURITY MUST REMAIN A PRIORITY Since the Electrical Safety Standards in The Private Rented Sector (England) regulations came into force on 1 July of this year, focus has now turned to what this legislation will mean for the fire safety and electrical industry, writes Marc Gaunt, Category & Segment Marketing Manager, Eaton.

mongst other requirements, property owners must now have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a person who is qualified and competent, at least every five years. Whilst this is a step in the right direction, more can still be done to make sure suitable technology is fitted in the first place, to make safety and security a priority in buildings across the UK. Recent months have seen the global workforce adapting to remote working, and unsurprisingly, this has brought to light new challenges around fire safety and security standards. In 2020, there has been an increase in weekday fires in the home due to cooking, smoking, electrical items and heating sources being used more frequently, as people are spending more time indoors than usual. Yet, we should see this time of change as an opportunity for both businesses and individuals to upgrade fire and security protections in their premises. Every year, the cost of fire damages in Europe is around €126 billion (£114bn), and it is time for facilities managers and building owners to explore how technology can reduce these risks in residential and commercial buildings.

A collaborative approach to fire and security safety Whilst it often falls on electrical contractors to make buildings safe by ensuring they adhere to legislation put in place in the UK, new data also shows that fire and rescue services (FRS) are introducing training in line with the changing nature of risk today to help reduce harm. A freedom of information request earlier this year found 34 fire and rescue services up and down the country have gone as far as to introduce specific operational training to improve the response to rescuing individuals from buildings. They now also plan for newer threats such as terrorist attacks, in addition to more ‘traditional’ threats like fire and flooding. Whilst this is extremely positive, individuals’ safety within buildings cannot rely on fire brigades and electrical contractors alone – we must take a more collaborative, proactive approach to our safety.

42 | November 2020

Fire, Safety & Security – Eaton.indd 42

Building owners and facilities managers should understand the new risks to occupants and infrastructure in UK buildings today, as well as taking steps to mitigate these threats. Building and occupant safety is becoming more challenging as we face a number of non-traditional threats, from power outages to terrorism. The changing profile of risk today requires facilities managers to constantly re-evaluate safety strategies for those who use their premises. 2020 has seen thousands of employees move to remote working, allowing some commercial building owners the time to make major changes to the fire and safety procedures in their building. As 1.5 million SMEs in the UK do not have a business plan in place for improving fire safety in the long run, the next few months may be the perfect time for leaders to implement large-scale plans. Building owners and managers should assess the need to add features like new fire exits and upgrade security systems such as CCTV – and as workers continue to work remotely, these changes won’t cause disruption to a normal working day.

Technology has the potential to mitigate fire risk

Facilities managers and building owners must continually educate themselves on the newest technologies

In addition to new risks, more traditional threats remain just as prevalent – as of 2019, more than 25% of fires are caused by electrical failure. Data shows that almost a third (31%) of respondents reported an increase in primary fires in residential buildings ignited by an electric fault or caused by a problem with electrical distribution compared to five years ago. This leap in primary fires has also led to an increase in the number of people fire brigades have had to rescue from buildings due to electrically-ignited fires or fires stemming from electrical distribution compared to five years ago. In fact, 24% report an increase for these rescues from residential buildings and 26% confirm an increase from commercial buildings. The number of electrical devices in the home and at work has increased significantly as technology has advanced. While this may explain the increase in electrically-ignited fires, technology advances have also led to solutions which can mitigate the risks of these fires and offer better protection to individuals – whether they are on commercial or private premises.

electricalcontractingnews.com

Facilities managers and building owners must continually educate themselves on the newest technologies, from Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) that prevent electrical fires, to the latest adaptive evacuation technology which can ease congestion or help guide people safely out of a building when trying to evacuate. In addition to easing reliance on our fire and rescue services, this will improve building safety for everyone – whether that’s staff in an office, students within a university or sports fans in a stadium. It is true that the breadth and severity of safety risks in buildings is expanding. Safety is a key focus for facilities managers and building owners, but as they navigate this complicated threat landscape, it’s vital that they explore the technology that can reduce risks. Many electrically-ignited fires can be prevented before they start. Evacuation processes can be streamlined to get people to safety more quickly. This new era of risk requires new and forward-looking defence mechanisms. Without them, there is risk of failing to protect what matters most. Building owners and managers must re-evaluate the way they protect people and property in line with the changing nature of risk and risk mitigation today.  Eaton, eaton.uk.com

Moreover, the affects of fire, smoke and water damage on business interruption, even for a relatively short time can be disastrous. Fire resistant walls and floors penetrated by data and telecommunications cables are at particular risk if these openings are moderately or highly active, i.e. where new or replacement cables are frequently being installed. If insufficient care is taken in re-installing the passive fi re protection seals or the seals are not appropriate for the type of penetration then they won’t perform if they ever need to. The Abesco Fireclamp® range of CT120 and CT240 Cable Transit devices are designed and rigorously tested to prevent the spread of fire and smoke from one compartment to another where these are breached by electrical, data and telecommunications cables. These fully retrofittable devices do not require the use of putties, sealants or coatings and can accommodate few or many cables – even up to full size cable baskets. Fireclamp® Cable Transits are round, square or rectangular powder coated steel sleeves with an inner lining of specially formulated intumescent material. When exposed to approximately 150oC the intumescent expands to many times its original volume, sealing off any voids to prevent the passage of fi re. PIONEERING IOT PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED Smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm supplier, FireAngel, has agreed a partnership with Ealing Council in conjunction with CEF to deliver one of the largest IoT rollouts of its kind currently available in the UK.

T

The contract will see the supply of FireAngel’s advanced connected technology

he contract will see the supply of FireAngel’s advanced connected technology – FireAngel Spec Connected – which will cost-effectively provide Ealing Council with a remote monitoring solution that ensures maximum levels of fire and CO detection for its tenants. Ealing Council will oversee the supply and installation of over 122,000 smoke, heat and CO alarms across an initial 14,000 of 17,000 properties located throughout West London – whilst also benefitting from FireAngel’s patented Predict technology, which will highlight trends and high-risk patterns of behaviour to prompt earlier intervention before an actual fire event. The new agreement will revolutionise the way in which Ealing Council monitors and manages its entire housing stock, eliminating the requirement for gaining physical access to a property, as all of the required device data is transmitted wirelessly in real time via a secure cloud network. Historically, Ealing Council has specified an LD3 Category mains-powered system from another supplier, which will be replaced with FireAngel’s advanced Specification Range, upgrading the level of protection provided throughout each property to an LD1 Category specification, in accordance with BS 5839-6. As part of Ealing Council’s continuous commitment to reviewing and improving the levels of protection it provides its tenants, whilst also acting in line with the release of the Draft Building Safety Bill, councillors reviewed its Fire Safety Policy to ensure fire safety equity for all tenants. After an initial trial period, FireAngel’s Specification Range was chosen due to its remote monitoring capabilities and compliance with an LD1 Category specification, which subsequently futureproofs all properties against any regulatory changes in the years ahead.

Ealing Council will oversee the supply and installation of over 122,000 smoke, heat and CO alarms

“FireAngel’s Specification Range enables continuous monitoring of fire and CO safety devices within domestic properties via a central, secure cloud-based system.”

Paul Cook, Interim Health and Safety Manager at Ealing Council, says: “After an initial review of Ealing Council’s Fire Safety Policy, it was clear a fire safety system that provided transparent and continuous monitoring of each alarm in every property would enable the council to increase the level of protection provided, while simultaneously streamlining maintenance processes to quickly identify any potential risks. “I was really impressed with the investment FireAngel had and continues to make with regard to its connected technology. This is an area that will continue to evolve and improve and we are confident that by partnering with FireAngel we will be providing our tenants with the highest standards in fire protection. We are making a real step change in how we protect our tenants and are one of the first social housing providers in the UK to adopt these revolutionary IoT technologies, in partnership with FireAngel.” FireAngel’s battery-powered Specification Range smoke, heat and CO alarms, supported by a FireAngel Connected Gateway, will be installed in each of the initial 14,000 properties, with the alarms exclusively supplied by CEF through the Procurement for Housing framework. FireAngel and Ealing Council have together developed a bespoke recyclable cardboard ‘kit pack’ that contains no plastic waste, significantly reducing the amount of packaging materials the installer needs to dispose of during the installation process. The packs contain FireAngel’s battery-powered Specification Range of smoke, heat and CO alarms, which will be installed across Ealing Council’s housing stock in line with an LD1 Category specification. As the alarms are wirelessly interlinked across a secure private network, the technology will allow Ealing Council to easily monitor and manage the status of the alarms in real time, highlighting any potential

electricalcontractingnews.com

issues as and when they occur. FireAngel’s Predict technology will also enable Cook and his team to remotely understand the trends and levels of risk each property presents and as tenant needs change. Ealing Council and FireAngel have also streamlined the installation process through the development of an innovative commissioning system, which includes photographic records, auditing facilities and the automatic production of certifications. James King, Director of Trade for FireAngel, says: “We are extremely proud to be supporting Ealing Council in one of the biggest IoT rollouts of its type currently available in the UK. Over the last seven years, FireAngel has spent in excess of £8 million on its IoT strategy to deliver connected fire safety technologies that revolutionise asset management for housing providers. “We are looking forward to working closely with Ealing Council throughout the installation and implementation stages to provide its tenants with enhanced quality of service and support with regard to fire safety.” FireAngel’s Specification Range enables continuous monitoring of fire and CO safety devices within domestic properties via a central, secure cloud-based system. Featuring Smart RF technology, the range of mains and battery-powered alarms supports the interlink of up to 50 devices together on a wireless network by fitting a Smart RF module. The devices include smoke, heat, CO alarms and assisted living solutions, which can be interlinked via a private network so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. This also immediately notifies tenants of a potential fire or CO event, providing a faster response time that allows individuals to safely and quickly exit the property.  FireAngel, fireangel.co.uk

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

BS 5839-6:2019 — ARE YOU UP TO DATE? With revisions to the standard for domestic fire detection introduced last year, Neil Baldwin, managing director at ESP, takes a look at the key updates that contractors need to be aware of, to ensure that they are fully compliant when installing fire alarm systems.

T

The new grading system is as follows:

he BSI’s recent update of the domestic fire detection and alarm system standard, specifically Part 6 of BS 5839, outlines the code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic properties. The standard is aimed at architects, engineers and other building professionals, enforcing authorities, installers and others responsible for implementing fire precautions in domestic premises. It provides the latest recommendations for fire detection and fire alarm systems in both new and existing domestic premises, in order to make them safer to live in. The main revisions include: •  Re-grading and revision of statistics and recommendations •  Updating guidance to take all other standards in the BS 5839 series into account •  New table on testing and servicing by grade of alarm system •  New recommendations for ensuring alarm signal transmission required within social care and sheltered housing settings function accordingly •  Increased protection in sheltered housing and supported housing •  New recommendation that communal fire alarm systems should not normally be installed in purpose-built blocks of flats

The key standard The BS 5839 series of standards began life with the publication of BS 5839-1 in 1980. It has since grown into nine parts, splitting domestic and non-domestic premises and also dealing with a range of specific systems in detail. Part 6 has become the key standard for domestic premises. The document supplies guidance and recommendations on planning, designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining detection and fire alarm systems. The recommendations refer principally to fire detection and fire alarm systems installed for the purpose of life safety, but also include recommendations for systems that are intended to protect property. The standard covers homes designed to accommodate a single family; HMOs comprising a number of self-contained units, each designed to accommodate a single family; and sheltered housing, including both the dwelling units and the common areas. It applies to both new and

46 | November 2020

Fire, Safety & Security – ESP.indd 46

existing premises. Its recommendations can be applied to the fire detection components of combined domestic fire and intruder alarm systems, or fire and social alarm systems. The standard also includes recommendations for routine attention. The systems it covers range from those comprising a single self-contained smoke alarm to systems of the type described in BS 5839-1. New recommendations have been added for fire detection in supported housing in particular, whilst revised guidance on the installation of communal fire alarm systems in purpose-built blocks of flats has also been introduced. The Standard has also been updated to reflect the updates made to Part 1 in 2017, which addresses non-domestic premises, combined with any other updates made to other Standards since the last full revision. Below is an outline of the key changes to BS 5839-6 and the areas to be aware of to ensure residents are offered the highest standard of fire protection throughout all types of domestic properties. This applies to property managers, architects, building professionals, installers and enforcing authorities.

•  Grade A Separate detectors, sounders and central control and indicating equipment with back-up power supply that conforms to British Standards BS EN 54. •  Grade C Separate detectors and sounders that are mains powered with back-up power supply and central control equipment. •  Grade D1 A system of one or more mains powered detectors, each with a tamper proof standby supply consisting of a battery or batteries. •  Grade D2 A system of one or more mains-powered detectors, each with an integral standby supply consisting of a user replaceable battery or batteries. •  Grade F1 A system of one or more batterypowered detectors powered by a tamper proof primary battery or batteries. •  Grade F2 A system of one or more batterypowered detectors powered by a user replaceable primary battery or batteries. These grades need to be adhered to when designing, constructing and managing fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic properties. Attention also needs to be given to the revisions made to Table 1 of the Standard, which outlines the minimum grade and category of system that should be installed to provide protection of life in typical premises. The updates have been made to reflect current living conditions. In conjunction with Table 1, a new table has also been created, which outlines the recommended testing and servicing by grade to prevent the blocking or delaying of fire alarm signals transmitted via social alarm systems in sheltered housing to an alarm receiving centre.  ESP, espuk.com

Revised system grading Whilst BS 5839-6 has previously been split into six varying Grades, each outlining the level of protection appropriate for certain properties and their corresponding levels of risk, the new update has altered the six sections, removing Grade B and Grade E, whilst Grade D and Grade F have been split into Grade D1 / Grade D2 and Grade F1 / Grade F2 respectively. Grade C has been revised and its recommendations expanded.

SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS HELP TO PROTECT E-BIKEPORT CHARGING STATIONS e-BikePort has chosen Hanwha Techwin as the single source provider of the video surveillance systems to be integrated with its autonomous, sustainable charging stations for electric-assisted bicycles and scooters.

e-BikePorts provide a convenient way to recharge light electric-assisted vehicles

W

ith city dwellers and workers throughout Europe being encouraged by governments to abandon their cars and use either public transport or bicycles to get to their destination, e-BikePorts provide a convenient way to recharge light electric-assisted vehicles, as well as other electronic equipment, such as mobile phones and tablets. In addition to the recharging sockets, secure lockers are available to temporarily store helmets and clothes, whilst internet access is provided by an integrated Wi-Fi kiosk. Powered by solar panels and not requiring any civil engineering work, the environmentally friendly e-BikePorts can be quickly and easily installed in virtually any location, including education campuses, shopping centres, office complexes and campsites, as well as city centres.

Wisenet solution Three vandal-resistant Wisenet XNF8010RVM fisheye cameras are integrated into each e-BikePort, one of which is located in the middle of the station to constantly capture 360-degree images of any activity. The two other cameras are positioned on the side of the stations to provide 180-degree panoramic fields of view.

“The video surveillance system is playing a very important role in helping create a safe environment for station users and for protecting their personal belongings.”

The four megapixel Wisenet XNF-8010RVM is equipped with IR illumination which enables it to capture high quality images regardless of the lighting conditions, and it also features Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which performs at up to 120dB, to accurately produce images that simultaneously contain very bright and very dark areas. Audio support facilitates two-way communication, whilst a built-in suite of video analytics provides camera tampering, loitering, directional and audio detection. A sound classification feature recognises critical sounds such as raised voices, screams, broken glass, gunshots and explosions. The fisheye cameras are powered by the e-BikePort’s solar panels during the day and by battery at night, as is the installed Wisenet QRN-410S network video recorder (NVR). The bandwidth friendly Wisenet QRN-410S supports H.265, H.264 and MJPEG compression, as well as WiseStream II, a complementary compression technology unique to Hanwha Techwin, which contributes to the ability of control room operators to view live or recorded images over a 4G network. A dual track recording feature enables the Wisenet QRN-410S to simultaneously record two streams of video from each connected camera at different resolutions. Intended to ensure operators are able to rapidly verify what may be occurring at a remote site, this feature facilitates the immediate retrieval of standard resolution images and then

electricalcontractingnews.com

enables operators to subsequently review the ultra-high-resolution recorded images for post incident forensic analysis.

Security “The video surveillance system is playing a very important role in helping create a safe environment for station users and for protecting their personal belongings,” says Philippe Faye, the creator of the e-BikePort concept and a director of the company, which manufacturers the stations in France. “We evaluated cameras and recording equipment from a number of manufacturers before choosing Hanwha Techwin as our partner. It proved to be an easy decision for us in that in addition to the ease of installation, high performance and reputation for reliability of the Wisenet products, we were also impressed with the technical advice and support we received from the locally based Hanwha Techwin team.” The first e-BikePort has been installed on the banks of the Vienna River within the City of Limoges in south-west France. Based on its popularity with users who, thanks to the city’s local authority, are able to use its facilities free of charge, it is expected that many more e-BikePorts are likely to be deployed across France and other towns and cities throughout Europe over the coming months.  Hanwha Techwin, hanwha-security.eu

FIVE WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR TEAM AGAINST AN ARC FLASH With temperatures more than four times hotter than the surface of the sun, it goes without saying that workers must be fully protected against the dangers of an arc flash. And for those working in the industrial electrical industry, working around high and low voltage electricity on a daily basis means workers are at increased risk. Here, Mark Lant, Technical Expert at ProGARM, explains his top five tips to protect your team from the potentially fatal or life-changing consequences of an arc flash.

Arc flash protection can be compromised by wearing nonAF garments underneath

1.  Educate your team

2.  Use the experts

If your team doesn’t properly understand the dangers posed to them by arc flash hazards because they haven’t been explained properly, then they may not wear the clothing correctly, leaving them vulnerable to the risks of an arc flash. Training a workforce is essential to ensuring optimum safety levels on the ground. It’s of paramount importance that those in the field are aware of the dangers around them, as well as how to wear their PPE correctly. Understanding how to minimise exposure to risk, as well as safe working practices and using equipment properly, significantly reduces the chances of an arc flash incident occurring in the first instance. However, regardless of precautions taken, sometimes such incidents can still occur, meaning PPE must always been worn correctly. For example, an unzipped or partially zipped arc flash jacket will leave an operative exposed to potentially life-threatening or life-changing injuries. Similarly, arc flash protection can be compromised by wearing non-AF garments underneath. In short, the more knowledge workers have around the dangers of an arc flash and other risks, the less likely it is that an incident will have serious consequences.

Getting to know the dangers, risks and technical language in any industry is challenging, but for those working in the industrial electrical industry, a lack of understanding around key terms can put lives at risk. With so much technical language around the subject of arc flash, it’s difficult to know where to start. However, it’s important to familiarise yourself with key terms such as: arc numbers; treated and inherent fabrics; and thermal energy. Use an expert like ProGARM to help you and your team fully understand the language and the dangers surrounding the subject of arc flash safety and protection.

3.  Equip workers with all PPE layers Wearing everyday clothing underneath arc flash PPE leaves workers at risk of serious burns, should an arc flash occur. While the flames caused by an arc flash may not actually come into contact with skin through the protective outer layers, the extreme heat can melt the materials used to manufacture everyday undergarments, including nylon, cotton, and polypropylene. This means all layers, including vests, leggings, thermals, socks and even underwear should be the right specification so that they don’t compromise the protection.

Working around high and low voltage electricity on a daily basis means workers are at increased risk

4.  Arc flash vs flame retardant While many think flame retardant (FR) PPE can provide the same level of protection against an arc flash, there are in fact separate safety standards for arc resistant clothing. The characteristics of an arc flash means that the level of protection provided is different and some ways far greater. This makes it essential that you and your team are up to speed on the crucial differences and those at risk are fully kitted out in arc resistant PPE.

Fire, Safety & Security – Progarm.indd 50

electricalcontractingnews.com

5.  Understand the relevant standards A new version of IEC 61482-1-1 has been published, changing the way arc flash garments are rated. ELIM is the new cal/cm2 measurement and it’s the point at which there is 0% second-degree burn probability at any given incident energy level. Previously, ATPV measurements calculated the incident energy level at which there’s a 50% probability of second-degree burns. Under the new ratings, a product could now have a lower cal rating compared with its ATPV rating, despite it being the same garment. This means that to achieve 8cal ELIM protection, wearers may be required to wear arc flash base layers underneath their outer PPE, to increase the layers of arc flash protection, or wear a heavier garment to provide the ELIM value if required.  Progarm, progarm.com

ELIMINATING LEGIONELLA FEARS WITH SMART TECHNOLOGY Matthew Margetts, Director of Sales and Marketing at Smarter Technologies, looks at how the threat of Legionella can be eliminated with smart technology, as commercial premises reopen after lockdown.

W

hile commercial premises are reopening following coronavirus closures, a great number of workers remain at home and many buildings are closed. With our eyes firmly on the control of the spread of COVID-19, prolonged closure of buildings poses another health risk in the form of Legionella. These bacteria are the cause of Legionnaires’ Disease, which is similar to pneumonia and is potentially fatal, killing one in 10 infected people. Legionella has made a number of headlines recently. After Legionella was detected in the Royal Navy command headquarters in Portsmouth, the building had to be temporarily closed in the interests of health and safety, for instance. The increase in observations of the bacteria has prompted Public Health England to warn the public about flushing water systems on reopening to mitigate the risk. Smart technologies offer an immediate solution that significantly reduces Legionella risks.

What is the cause of Legionella?

Legionella is the cause of Legionnaires’ Disease

Legionella bacteria thrive in stagnant water between 20° and 50°C. Unused taps, pipes, and storage tanks are some of the most common breeding grounds for bacteria growth, but there are some other parts of buildings to consider too – like ‘dead legs’, areas affected by rust and scale, and faulty valves and filters.

“The simplicity and costeffectiveness of an automated Legionella compliance system makes it an accessible, modern solution to an everyday requirement.”

The traditional approach to Legionella maintenance is a labour-intensive process, involving manual flushing and temperature testing of water flow. A risk assessment provides guidance on the regularity and parameters of this testing for compliance purposes. Smart technologies have transformed conventional methods – providing automated testing and precision reporting for total compliance and workplace safety around water systems. As businesses reopen, these cost-effective, smart solutions are addressing the immediate needs of business owners, with a long-term appeal.

The benefits of smarter, automated Legionella compliance system •  Manual versus automated processes For the average business in the UK, the manual process involves weekly manual flushing and testing – running hot and cold water for two minutes and recording temperatures, as well as twice-yearly hot water storage cylinder and cold water tank checks. Once installed, smart solutions conduct these readings automatically to meet compliance schedules. •  Man versus machine This involves human resource, whether outsourced or internal, both of which come at a cost. As processes are digitalised and brought into the future, the main benefits are unquestionably the cost of employing staff to carry out the checks. In Legionella maintenance, there is also the added benefit of uniform, consistent methods, which makes for demonstrable fulfilment of compliance obligations. It also gives accurate data readings through which you can conduct meaningful trend analyses. Exposure to disease-carrying contaminants is also a consideration when it comes to these testing processes – a risk that is eliminated through smart, automated processes. •  Time spent versus time saved Obviously, manual temperature monitoring takes time. This is put into stark relief when one considers how automated compliance systems gather data consistently and automatically in the background. Automated Legionella compliance systems will alert selected personnel on any undesirable water temperature readings, giving business owners and facilities managers the opportunity to respond immediately.

electricalcontractingnews.com

This ability to react to changes in real time has an additional benefit. The early detection of changes can assist maintenance teams in identifying and locating the existence of faults which, depending on pipeworks systems and building size, can be a very costly and time-consuming task. •  Manual record-keeping   versus cloud-based reporting Businesses are required to keep Legionella maintenance records for five years, which presents an administrative burden for owners and facilities managers. Gaps in records, human error, and inefficient record-keeping could mean fines or imprisonment if found guilty of non-compliance. Smart, automated Legionella compliance systems send readings to a remotely accessible dashboard in real time. This cloud-based solution means detailed, accurate records can be accumulated and stored – unaffected by human error, changes in administrative staff, or equipment failures.

Go forward. Go smarter The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of an automated Legionella compliance system makes it an accessible, modern solution to an everyday requirement. Central to alleviating Legionella-related health and compliance concerns, they are designed to provide accurate, actionable insights. Some are also up to 71% less expensive than manual testing in buildings of approximately 5,000 to 10,000sq-ft. Pipe temperature sensors, wireless tank temperature sensors, and automatic temperature testing and flushing units are controlled through a smart building platform to give real-time alerts on temperature fluctuations. Smarter Technologies conducted an experiment with its own technology – under the same conditions – and found that the average annual cost of four universal testing units and hot and cold water storage temperature monitoring units (including hardware) will be £757.08. The total cost over five years will be £3,785.40. This means that facilities managers can get an average annual saving of £1,738.92, with the business saving £8,964.60 over five years. By making the switch to automated legionella regimes now then, facilities owners can drive efficiencies, reduce costs and make a fully informed switch for futureproofing their business safety needs.  Smarter Technologies, smartertechnologies.com

cameras manufactured by Dahua at carefully chosen locations, both within and around the building, to help detect intruders, as well as visually verify access control activity. In addition, automated barriers will be installed at the site’s entrance. Linked to the CCTV system and triggered by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) analytics, the barriers help care home management control vehicle access to the site. With over 70 centres and services touching the lives of 10,000 people every week, Jewish Care is the largest health and social care organisation serving the Jewish community in London and the South East. “We go to great lengths to ensure our clients feel safe and this is particularly important as many of them have disabilities, mental health needs or live with dementia,” says Lindsay Long, Facilities Manager at Jewish Care. “Investing in the latest generation of access control, door entry and CCTV solutions was therefore considered to be

HUSH ACTIV SPECIFIED FOR MOD FACILITY C-TEC’s new Hush ActiV BS 5839-6 Grade C domestic fire alarm systems are providing top-grade fire protection at several Ministry of Defence-managed residential properties in North Wales. Located on the banks of the Menai Strait, the stretch of shallow tidal water that separates Angelsey from the mainland, the spacious homes are part of The Joint Service Mountain Training Centre Indefatigable, a facility designed to provide affordable holiday accommodation for members of the Armed Forces and their families. Each of the three-bedroomed properties is equipped with Hush ActiV smoke detectors in the entrance hall and stairs, a heat detector in the kitchen and sounder beacons in the bedrooms, all connected to a Hush ActiV controller. With its easy-to-operate low level controller, the system offers simple detection, alarm, silencing and test facilities at light-switch level – occupants simply press ‘HUSH’ on the controller to silence an unwanted alarm. Darren Morrell, Director of Olympian Fire, the specialist installation company that completed the project says: “Our client required a system that would provide the families staying in the properties with the highest levels of fire protection and minimal false fire alarms. We specified Hush ActiV, a high-quality cost-effective fully-monitored BS 5839-6 Grade C solution, as it offers greater levels of protection than the unmonitored battery alarm Grade D systems typically used in these properties and virtually eliminates false alarms. “Hush ActiV is a fantastic option for domestic dwellings that don’t require all-out conventional fire alarm systems. Our client is delighted and the success of the project has led to C-TEC’s more sophisticated Hush Pro domestic fire solution being specified at some other MoD facilities where connection to a communal/landlord system is required.” C-TEC, c-tec.com

ESP LAUNCHES NEW FOOT OPERATED DOOR PULL ESP has added a Foot Operated Door Pull to its Aperta access control range. Hand hygiene is the single most important measure for preventing the spread of infection. With door handles and touch plates having one of the highest touch rates in any environment, they are likely to hold a significant number of microbes on their surfaces. With a foot operated door pull, users are able to open the door in a more hygienic way with their foot, thus eliminating the need to use their hands and avoiding the problem of handle-to-hand germ transfer. Made from brushed stainless steel and supplied with rubber stoppers, the new foot pull will work on latchless wooden or metal doors. They are simple to install with the fixing bolt and screws included, and completed with an operation sticker to be positioned at eye level. The foot pull can be a fast solution for contactless applications, suiting new and retrofit installations. ESP, espuk.com

LINDAPTER LAUNCHES NEW FIXING FOR COMFLOR DECKING Lindapter has announced the immediate availability of the Type COM, a new decking fixing for quickly attaching building services to ComFlor 60 and ComFlor 80 profiles manufactured by Tata Steel. Lindapter’s Type COM provides an efficient and economical fixing for suspending a variety of equipment, including HVAC systems, fire protection, pipe work, electrical items and lowered ceilings. The CE marked fixing creates genuine efficiencies for the contractor as it is installed within seconds and is adjustable onsite without the requirement of specialist labour, expensive tools or power. The latest addition to Lindapter’s extensive range of decking fixings was developed at the request of Tata Steel which asked Lindapter to design and manufacture a connection point for its popular ComFlor 60 and ComFlor 80 composite decking. The fixing locks inside the dovetail re-entrant channel of the profile and, unlike shot firing methods, this zero-impact method preserves the strength of the deck and avoids delamination (separating the steel from the concrete) and damage to the deck. SCOLMORE STAYS ONE STEP AHEAD With an increasing emphasis on building cleanliness, Scolmore has taken a further step to ensure that its wiring accessory products offer enhanced hygiene properties. The company’s popular Mode, Mode Part M and Polar plates have now been independently tested and have shown to have anti-viral properties against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. After a contact period of four hours, all tested plates were shown to have a 99.9% kill off rate against enveloped viruses and a 92% kill off rate against non-enveloped viruses. This new anti-viral testing is in addition to the anti-bacterial testing already carried out. Mode, Mode Part M and Polar are all manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. When independently tested, all products achieved a 99.99% kill off rate across all four types of the strains of bacteria – MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia. Products from the Mode, Mode Part M and Polar ranges have been specified and installed across a huge range of applications.
