The industry now has a six-month period (until 28 September 2022) before the changes outlined in Amendment 2 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations come into effect – during this time, electrical contractors must make sure they are up-to-speed with the adjustments set out in the new regulations. These include recommendations for the increased use of arc fault detection and surge protection devices, further strengthening of previous rules, and certificate documentation, identification labelling, and testing schedules have also been covered. Hager has welcomed the publication of Amendment 2. INDUSTRY NEWS THREE-QUARTERS OF UK ELECTRICIANS DON’T FEEL CONFIDENT HANDLING FINANCES Almost three-quarters (74%) of UK electricians don’t feel confident in handling their company finances, and many have lost money as a result, new research has revealed. The study, conducted by ElectricalDirect, surveyed electricians from across the country and found that only 26% are comfortable dealing with the financial side of their business. This includes pricing up jobs for customers, with a quarter (25%) admitting to having lost money because they’ve made mistakes whilst giving quotes. A simple way for workers to check if their prices are reasonable is to see what other electricians in their area are charging for similar jobs. However, almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents said that this isn’t something they do. Furthermore, the vast majority (76%) of electricians do not account for the cost of living or inflation rates when giving quotes to customers. This is despite living costs rising at their fastest rate for 30 years and inflation predicted to reach 8.3% in April, meaning take-home pay could fall heavily. Although they don’t specifically consider the cost of living, more than a quarter (28%) of UK electricians have raised their prices since the start of 2022, and four in five (80%) have upped their quotes in the last year. However, despite the pandemic significantly disrupting the industry, one in 20 (5%) have not increased their rates in the last two years. GARDENERS URGED TO STAY SAFE ON SPRING RETURN UK Power Networks wants gardeners to put safety first as many spring into action and venture back outside at the end of winter. The UK’s biggest electricity distributor is reminding those with green fingers to stay on red alert when undertaking any digging work. The company needs gardeners to understand that contact with high voltage underground electricity cables can be fatal. The main risk to gardeners comes with deep digging, but wider advice includes how to stay safe using mowers, ladders and even replacing fence panels which may have been damaged during recent storms. The top tips for gardeners include: • Be aware of the location of underground electricity equipment and request details before work starts. Cable plans can be found at linesearchbeforeudig.co.uk. For larger projects use a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT). • When digging deep in the garden, for instance planting trees or installing fence panels, assume all cables are live and hand dig trial holes to check the depth of cables. • When mowing the lawn, always fit plugs with a Residual Current Device (RCD) to protect against electrocution. This safety device automatically switches off power when there is a fault. • If doing outdoor jobs involving a ladder, always look up and look out for overhead power cables, as contact could cause serious injury or even death. The study, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, analysed search data from across the nation and found that in 82 of the UK’s 100 largest towns and cities, plumbers are the most coveted tradespeople, followed by electricians.

DOMESTIC ELECTRICIAN APPRENTICESHIP RECEIVES GREEN LIGHT The domestic electrical market in England now has a formal, funded training structure following the approval of the new Domestic Electrician Level 3 apprenticeship standard. With the new apprenticeship, recently approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, domestic electrical work now has its own clear identity with an industry standard and assessment route agreed by employers. Three years in duration, the apprenticeship standard provides a comprehensive Level 3 training programme that will cover all facets of planning, installing and maintaining electrical services within a domestic setting. It also includes training and assessment in domestic electric vehicle charging point installation, and will provide a strong platform of foundation skills to equip learners to undertake further training in the installation of new and low carbon technologies. Domestic Electrician apprentices will gain a new Level 3 technical Electrotechnical in Dwellings qualification and will have to carry out an in-depth End Point Assessment that is a modified version of the existing industry assessment of competence, the AM2. The standard was developed by an industry employer group, in response to growing demand for a high-quality training route that clearly ring fences domestic electrical work and provides a structured training programme for both new entrants and those already in the workforce. The people of Bath are most likely to seek the services of a tradesperson, with 103 monthly Google searches per 1,000 residents – the highest rate in the UK. The Somerset city is followed by Preston (102) and Bedford (88). However, this varies by trade, with Exeter being the most lucrative city for many workers. NEW RESEARCH INTO THE HUMAN IMPACT OF FIRES LAUNCHED The Housing Safety & Wellbeing Taskforce, with founding member Aico, is launching a seminal piece of research into the human impact of fire and how different legislations across the four nations impacts its prevalence. “One way or another we need to make buildings safe, that’s carbon monoxide and fire dangers. We have perhaps contributed to allowing a bad situation to continue for too long and I welcome finding the way forward,” says Sir Peter Bottomley, MP for Worthing West, and Father of the House at the Housing Safety & Wellbeing Taskforce (HSWT) Launch. The key findings from the research are: • The cost of each fire has reduced by 41.5% in Scotland, compared with 23.2% and 24.4% in England and Wales respectively • Accounting for additional investment, balanced against the net cost to the economy of fire incidents, significant savings have been seen in Scotland. If England saw reduction in costs at the same relative scale as Scotland, this would amount to £243 million of savings per year • The aggregate cost of dwelling fires amounted to £1.1 billion in 2019/20 after adjusting for inflation • Those classed as lower-income are a staggering 60% more likely than higher-income groups to face serious fire hazards in their homes • Those to have ever experienced a fire, 18.7% reported subsequent psychological trauma. This represents an estimated 957,000 adults • Individuals with children younger than five years’ old were the most likely to have experienced trauma in the aftermath of a fire, amounting to 31.8% of those in this category. INDUSTRY NEWS ONE IN THREE TRADESWOMEN EXPERIENCE DISCRIMINATION New research from Rated People has revealed the biggest challenges faced by women who work in the trades industry, as well as the trades which have the lowest representation of women and the biggest gender pay gaps. The study discovered well over a third of tradeswomen (39%) aren’t taken seriously because of their gender. One in seven (15%) have had personal safety concerns when working, and almost one in 10 (9%) say they’ve had customers who won’t let them work on a job when they see they’re a woman. The findings are taken from the newly-launched 2022 edition of Rated People’s Home Improvement Trends Report, where researchers spoke to more than 600 tradespeople across the UK about working in the industry, and over 2,000 homeowners about their attitudes to hiring tradeswomen. Positively, there’s growing demand from UK homeowners – nearly half (46%) say they’d definitely hire a tradeswoman, 43% have no preference and only 11% of UK homeowners say they’d prefer a tradesman. Almost one in three (29%) women in the UK also say they would feel safer hiring a tradeswoman to do a home improvement or maintenance job in their home. But the research highlights just how out of balance the industry is. Over half (11) of the 20 professions with the worst levels of representation of women in the UK are within the trades industry.
Women make up less than 1% (0.99%) of carpenters and joiners in the UK, and less than 4% of electricians, plumbers, floorers and tilers are women. Across the 10 trades with the lowest representation of women, none of them have more than 5% of women in the workforce. Women electricians earn 54% of what men do. Women in construction and building trades only earn the equivalent of 57% of a man’s salary, and women plumbers would take home just 61% of what a man would in the same trade. RECOLIGHT WORKSHOPS IN LIGHTING PRODUCT DESIGN FOR A CIRCULAR ECONOMY Recolight has announced a new series of workshops to help manufacturers embed circular economy principles in the design of lighting products. The one day in-person workshops will describe circular economy standards and specifications that companies can use to show the circularity of their products. They will also provide practical guidance on circular design issues, including design for long and extended use, upgradeability and repairability, replaceability, choice of materials, use of recycled raw materials, and design for recovery. A series of case studies will be used to show how these requirements can be implemented in practice. Furthermore, participants have the option to bring their own company product to the workshop, for review by attendees, to consider how it might be adapted for greater circularity. The workshops will feature a roundtable environment with a maximum of 12 delegates, giving the opportunity for full interaction, feedback, and questions for each topic. The workshops take place on four dates:
SELECT DONATES POSTERS AND TOOLBOX CARDS TO KEEP APPRENTICES SAFE SELECT is distributing posters and handy toolbox-sized safe isolation flowcharts to remind apprentices and adult trainees of correct working practices. The campaigning electrical body is currently handing out ‘Ten Steps to Safe Isolation’ posters to all 22 training centres used by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), to be displayed prominently as a reminder of how to work safely. Smaller durable versions, designed to fit handily into toolboxes, are also being made available to all 2,669 electrical apprentices and adult trainees currently training in Scotland. Running under the banner ‘Work dead safely: Stay alive’, the posters and cards have been adapted from the range of safe isolation materials launched by SELECT in January 2021. The first resources were handed over to David Henderson, SECTT Assessment Centre Manager at Cambuslang, in March and the remaining posters and cards will now be distributed to the 21 approved centres around Scotland. COMPLEX SIXTH FORM COLLEGE SITE GETS HOCHIKI FIRE SYSTEM UPGRADE Paston College in Norfolk has transformed over the years from a grammar school for boys into a co-ed sixth form college dedicated to working with young people ages 16-18. Following a recommendation from Norwich Education Services, a completely new fire system was required which would need to meet BS5839 Part 1 2017 for an L2 category. The life safety system installation project required networking across multiple sites and buildings, as well as ensuring the protection of the historic Nelson Museum. And with a main road acting as a physical divide through the middle of the campus, this was a complex project to undertake. TP Fire & Security was commissioned to install the new system, and the company selected Hochiki’s ESP intelligent range of addressable fire detection and alarm equipment. Kevin Harris from TP Fire & Security comments: “This was an incredibly complex project. We were working with modern and historic buildings, we had to ensure the protection of the Nelson Museum, and of course the campus is split right down the middle by a main road. We chose Hochiki because it afforded us the flexibility with the systems and devices that were needed, with a project such as this.” As an educational facility, it was important to keep to strict budgets, especially when it came to the ongoing operational costs for the system, and, with hundreds of pupils and staff in attendance each day, a system which would be reliable and reduce false alarms was vital. J S WRIGHT SECURES £3.5M-PLUS DEAL FOR DOCK DEVELOPMENT J S Wright has secured a contract valued at more than £3.5 million for a new harbourside development in Bristol. The company will design and build the mechanical services for 142 high quality apartments on a long-derelict site at McArthur’s Yard on Gas Ferry Road in the city’s historic dock area. The £36 million project, led by award-winning housebuilder, Hill, in association with leading housing provider, The Guinness Partnership, will deliver a mix of one to three-bedroom homes for market sale, shared ownership, and social rent, as well as ground floor commercial space. J S Wright’s contract will involve designing and installing an energy centre with associated pipework to distribute low temperature hot water heating to radiators in each apartment via direct single plate heat interface units (HIUs). The company will also install a boosted cold water system for the domestic hot and cold-water supply. In addition, J S Wright will install energy efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems, smoke ventilation and dry risers, as well as water sprinklers within residential areas. VOLKERHIGHWAYS TO PROVIDE LED LIGHTING UPGRADES ACROSS OXFORDSHIRE VolkerHighways has been awarded a Highways Electrical Assets contract by Oxfordshire County Council, worth £30 million. Works have begun and will continue for five years, with three possible years of extensions. The contract will see VolkerHighways maintain approimately 60,000 streetlights and over 6,000 illuminated signs, bollards and other illuminated equipment, across the county. This will include upgrading 35,000 units with LED lighting, to increase their energy efficiency. In addition, the team will replace aged lighting columns, and carry out both planned and responsive maintenance inspections, testing and repair works, for the duration of the contract. Councillor Tim Bearder, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management, says: “The County Council is looking forward to working with VolkerHighways to deliver the maintenance and upgrade of our street lighting assets within Oxfordshire. These are exciting times as we change the existing assets to LED units, saving the authority 15,000,000kWh of energy and delivering a reduction of 2,600 tonnes of CO2”. CONTRACT NEWS TORQUAY’S ROYAL TERRACE GARDENS SHOWCASED IN THE BEST LIGHT Set amongst the picturesque coastline of Torquay, South Devon, the Royal Terrace Gardens are a popular tourist attraction frequented by locals and visitors alike. Michael Grubb Studio was commissioned by Torbay Council to develop ‘Lightplay’ – a new, permanent, lit interactive route along the seafront. The overall concept is to encourage visitors to enjoy the gardens and take inspiration by extending the notion of sunset, so as to bring a sense of health, happiness and enjoyment that comes with the warmth of evening light. The main elements are composed of step lighting, cliff floodlighting and bespoke artist designed columns that create a holistic experience for the gardens, encouraging people to pause and enjoy their surroundings, as well as providing a safer environment. Michael Grubb Studio collaborated with visual artist Anouk Mercier in partnership with Torquay Museum to develop a series of interactive lighting columns to form beacons and create pools of light with integrated projections along the lower pathway inspired by the museum’s collections. Back lit, laser cut forms with the columns, ranging from corals and seaweed to birds, form a fine tracery articulating the lower pathway. Gobo projections onto the walkway of selected designs form playful dynamic punctation points. The illuminated staircase, in an array of colours, leads to a new viewing platform with impressive sea views. Electrical contractor, Drew and Co, formed part of the project team, working collaboratively with the creative team and suppliers to install the lighting in a live working environment. SIGNIFICANT ENERGY SAVINGS DELIVERED AT SPEEDY INNOVATION CENTRE Tools, plant and specialist equipment hire provider, Speedy, recently opened its new Innovation Centre in Milton Keynes. Part of Speedy’s mission is to reduce energy usage, emissions and shrink its carbon footprint whilst increasing the emphasis placed on employee wellbeing. To help achieve this at the Milton Keynes site the hire specialist turned to global associates. From the initial site visit at Milton Keynes, global associates focused on the need to provide a smart solution which met the objectives of Speedy, whilst ensuring that every single item installed added value to the project. This was achieved thanks to the implementation of a Smart Eco Solution which brings together Edge computing, Cloud enablement, LoRaWan wireless sensors and a Tridium N4 powered control platform to create a hybrid IoT BMS solution. Carefully controlled ambient levels of heating and cooling create a healthier working environment to maintain the comfort and wellbeing of staff, whilst occupants also benefit from other energy saving measures such as PIR controlled lighting which uses daylight harvesting to maintain a 300 lux level. GLOBAL PUBLISHING COMPANY UPGRADES LIGHTING AT UK FACILITY Powerlite Fitzgerald has been selected by global leader in publishing, education and research, Wiley, to update the lighting systems at its UK site. Based in Oxford, the company was looking to overhaul its current fixtures and chose Powerlite Fitzgerald’s systems and experience for the application. Throughout the project, Powerlite Fitzgerald’s team brought the lighting levels in line with the latest CIBSE guidelines and refreshed the current fittings which were reaching the end of their lifespan. Taking into consideration the size of the site, which houses more than 350 members of staff working around the clock, Wiley had previously faced the challenge of ensuring emergency light testing was compliant and found it difficult to set aside time for the FM team to change the constantly failing lamps and components. The office space also had a 500x500mm concealed grid, which meant that the replacement product needed to be able to fit around its location. This led the installation team to change the planned fitting to another within the Powerlite Fitzgerald range that would work with the ceiling to allow for a quick and easy installation. Ben Arscott, Sales Director at Powerlite Fitzgerald, says: “Our wireless system Fitz-i offered huge flexibility over a traditional hard wired DALI system. The facility management team now has access to a secure web portal where all of the reporting is captured. This allows the storage of energy and occupancy reports (heat maps and figures) and remote emergency testing results that are kept secure and can be viewed from anywhere in the world. The facility management team can then use this information to optimise the building and ensure compliance is maintained with minimal involvement.”

A NEW GENERATION OF SKILLED ENGINEERS IN THE MAKING As the new Vice President of the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA), Paul Wetherfield discusses the ways in which the organisation’s focus on training and apprenticeships is helping to tackle the skills shortage.

e are entering an age that offers an abundance of technology, which enables us to manage our buildings more efficiently. And with the UK’s net zero by 2050 target aimed specifically towards preserving the health of the planet, we are entering an era in which a lot of this technology is no longer viewed as a luxury addition to a building, but an outright necessity. As the levels of product innovation continue to reach ever higher levels, the skills to select and integrate products need to be sharper than ever. In recent years the BCIA has been leading the charge in ensuring there is enough talent coming into the building controls sector to deliver the buildings of tomorrow – today. The good news is we are potentially sitting on the crest of a wave in terms of a new generation of skilled engineers in the making. Today’s school leavers are abundantly aware of the challenges facing the world they are going to inherit from their parents and grandparents, and an increasing number of them are looking for opportunities to make a difference. Just look at the level of youth involvement in events like the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) that took place in Glasgow at the start of November, as well as other similar events such as the Youth4Climate Summit in Milan and the 16th UN Conference of Youth.

It is now up to organisations such as the BCIA and its members to make the Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) sector attractive to anyone looking to embark on a new career. Not only that, we also have to provide the appropriate training pathways that ensure the engineers of the future have the necessary levels of knowledge and competency to meet the demands of a job that is constantly changing with the advancement in technology.
Evolution An advantage we have now is that with the abundance of ‘smart’ technology and its integration into the built environment means the BEMS sector is perhaps not considered as ‘niche’ as it once was. Last year, in an interview to mark the BCIA’s 30th anniversary, Roger Woodward, one of the founder members, explained how the organisation had evolved into a “significantly more mature body compared to what it started out as.” The evolution that Roger described has been vital in transforming the BCIA into a body that can influence key decisions in industry and government. With technical guides, working groups, apprenticeships and training courses just some of the things the BCIA now has to offer, it has become a vital resource for young engineers now and in the future and also to help inform people on what the industry is about. The focus on training and apprenticeships is one of the main reasons Paul decided to join the BCIA’s Management Committee, as his passion is driven by the lack of young and talented engineers within the industry. Paul has shaped his own business around the development of young apprentices, which currently make up 15% of the workforce. In 2021, after more than four years of hard work by the Trailblazer Employer Group, the BCIA launched its Level 4 Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Controls Engineer Apprenticeship in partnership with training provider Group Horizon. With commercial buildings representing one of the largest capital expenses for businesses, and building owners and managers constantly looking for ways to make them more efficient and sustainable, the challenge for the BEMS Controls Engineer is knowing how to achieve this level of efficiency.

This apprenticeship provides the answer, offering a balance of on-the-job assessments and technical training which covers all aspects of the industry. The training programme is delivered on the apprentice’s company site and through classroom and/or online learning sessions. It can take up to 36 months to complete.
A fresh start The apprenticeship isn’t just for school leavers either. The programme presents an ideal way for someone to get into a different industry if they are looking for a new challenge. In the anniversary interview with Roger Woodward, George Belfield, who was born the same year the BCIA was formed, explained how becoming a BMS engineer provided the “technical challenge” he was looking for after working for a local council. He also emphasised how the BCIA’s courses helped on his new career path, saying: “Having those courses as a start point provides a fantastic grounding in BMS and helps you get the most out of your work experiences as well.” Career changes are becoming more and more common and the lockdown periods in the last two years have even forced many people who have suddenly found themselves out of work to look for a fresh start.
Positive signs There are positive early signs that the apprenticeship will be a tremendous success. The first two programmes began before Christmas and were fully booked up and the third cohort recently got underway. The feedback has so far been very good. On successful completion of the programme, individuals will receive a BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship at Level 4. In addition, on completion of specific BCIA technical course modules, individuals will receive the BCIA Technical Certificate and the BCIA Advanced Technical Certificate. Individuals will also be eligible to apply for an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Building Controls card at Associate or Integrator Level (depending on their level of experience). DH: I am the Vice President of Power Systems for Schneider Electric UK and Ireland and have been in the role since 2017 when I joined the company. INTERVIEW On a day-to-day basis, I work with my team of sales, business development and project engineers – we strive to bring best in class energy management digital technologies to energy-critical customers. This will help to enable the shift to a more sustainable and efficient energy landscape, in key areas such as renewable generation, electric vehicles, rail, shore-to-ship electric charging, data centres and hospitals. Ultimately, the key to delivering this is working directly with our utility partners in helping to digitise the grid to facilitate the transition from Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to Distribution System Operator (DSO). CW: How has COVID-19 affected the industry? Do you think things will be finally able to get back to ‘normal’ soon? DH: During the COVID-19 crisis we have seen that while the fossil fuel industry has struggled due to reduced demand from transport and other sectors, the renewable energy industry has experienced record growth. In fact, it was estimated that by 2025 renewables will become the largest source of electricity generation worldwide (as predicted by the International Energy Agency). What’s more, key stakeholders such as various governmental bodies (excluding the EU) have responded to the COVID-19 crisis by investing in energy-related stimulus packages worth $220 billion – half of which focus on clean energy technologies. CW: Aside from COVID-19, what have been the biggest changes across the industry in recent times? What will be the biggest changes in the future? DH: 2021 was a sobering year for anyone concerned about climate change. We’ve witnessed record breaking temperatures, devastating wildfires, and catastrophic flooding. However, there has never been more significant support and desire to tackle the climate crisis from policymakers, businesses and consumers. And, we already have the technology and solutions to make real inroads into creating a net zero future. The cost of clean, renewable energy is becoming cheaper and policymakers, including those in the UK and in Ireland, are strengthening their climate policies and commitments on the road to achieving net zero by 2050. Climate-related extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, which is causing more frequent disruptions to the core infrastructure that supports the way we live and move. Moreover, mass urbanisation will create a growing demand for resilient, low carbon infrastructure. As cities become more modern, integrating electric vehicles, electrified public transport, and smart buildings powered by renewable energy, there needs to be a sense of security in being able to accommodate this influx of energy demand. The expansion of our population and growth in demand for energy will also lead to fluctuating demands, and the development of energy ‘prosumers’ with self-generated power sources. This will put further stress on aging energy infrastructure, which will need to be more efficient and resilient to stay ahead of the energy transition.

CW: What’s next for you and for Schneider Electric? DH: We’re continuing our journey to achieve a more sustainable future by working with key organisations and stakeholders to achieve our climate commitments. Vehicle to grid will be a powerful weapon in the electric vehicle revolution and smart digital grids will be vital to supporting the ability of drivers to sell surplus electricity back to the network. As utilities stakeholders look to invest in upgrading the electrical network to increase EV charging capacity, they will also be looking to avoid creative upward pressure on the cost of electricity for consumers and businesses. Additionally, the development of next generation advanced batteries in the market will help to increase availability and resiliency of critical power infrastructure, which will be beneficial in extending the EV range. As members enter the reception area, their eyes are drawn to the unique feature chandelier above the staircase. This was created by Optelma on a design by Virgile & Partners through a bespoke tube installation. The stairs are further illuminated with 30m of continuous constant current LED strip to the underside of the balustrade. SPECIFYING SUSTAINABLE CABLE MANAGEMENT Sustainability in all areas of a building’s design and construction is now a priority. Here, Jon Chamberlain, Managing Director (Designate) at Marshall-Tufflex, discusses why responsible selection of plastic products, such as cable management systems, is essential, the current lack of attention on the issue and how the cable management industry has the potential to make a positive impact with buy-in from contractors.
F
or many businesses within construction, including electrical contractors, sustainability is an important part of their work, a core element of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy and an essential component of the tender process. This is increasingly true as a growing number of tenders require contractors to demonstrate sustainable practices for pre-qualification. However, one area where many otherwise environmentally conscious businesses are still lagging behind is on the use of responsibly sourced plastic products, especially cable management systems. There are two key and related environmental issues – carbon emissions and waste.
Carbon emissions It is now clear that action has to be taken to reduce – and even reverse – the impact of human activity on the environment in order to limit the potentially disastrous effects of climate change. For the built environment, the focus is often on reducing operational carbon, the ongoing emissions associated with the day to day use of the building. However, until recently, the embodied carbon has largely been overlooked.
Embodied carbon is the CO2 emitted in producing the materials and products, from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing to installation in the building. This is one of the biggest issues for the built environment sector and the primary consideration for products such as cable management systems, which do not impact operational carbon emissions.
Waste

In addition to the carbon impact, there is also the issue of waste. More than a third of the UK’s annual waste comes from the construction sector alone, of which an estimated 25 million tonnes is sent to landfill. In terms of plastic waste specifically, over one million tonnes of PVC-U is removed from buildings each year across Europe, yet currently only 30% of this is recycled. The issue of waste is closely linked to carbon emissions as recycling plastic requires far less energy than primary
plastic production. For example, in a study undertaken by the University of Manchester, it was found that a PVC-U window made from virgin material has 20 times more embodied carbon compared to one manufactured with recycled content.
Finding a solution This combination of factors demonstrates why the careful choice of products for both new build and refurbishment projects is so vitally important. The cable management products within a given building can represent a significant part of the interior fit-out, especially for larger buildings. Routing power, data, internet and other communication connections to all areas of the building is a requirement on a wide range of projects from offices and public buildings to healthcare and educational facilities. This also means there is a real opportunity to have an impact on the embodied carbon of the project and prevent waste by working with clients to

Overcoming the obstacles Despite the clear benefits of using recycled content in manufacturing, such products have not yet been widely adopted. This is perhaps in part due to some misconceptions about the products. Firstly, there is a false assumption that recycled products may not offer the same strength or appearance. In fact, PVC-U conduit and trunking products with recycled content offer the same performance as the equivalent made from virgin materials. However, as with any product, regardless of the raw material, it is important to choose high quality solutions from reputable manufacturers. Thanks to Marshall-Tufflex’s long heritage in extruding PVC and injection-moulding techniques that have been developed in house, it can offer superior products with recycled content that retain their high quality and outstanding finish. To achieve this, the company has rigorous quality control measures in place throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the expected standard, including achieving a glossy white finish for colour consistency throughout the project. If a product does not meet Marshall-Tufflex’s exacting standards, it can easily be recycled back into chips and re-enter the production process, meaning there is no waste. There is also a misconception that the cost of such products will be higher and, as a result, impact the overall cost of this element of the project, and even make a proposal uncompetitive on price. However, the cost of cable management products made from recycled material is usually in line with others of the same quality, as with products from the Marshall-Tufflex range, making it a simple and cost neutral switch.
Driving demand Marshall-Tufflex is striving to maximise the amount of recycled content in its products to lower carbon emissions and divert waste from landfill. However, this can only be done in collaboration with contractors who have an essential role in promoting the use of these products. The company says that the industry also needs other manufacturers to follow what it is doing, but this will only happen with increased demand from contractors and clients. That is why Marshall-Tufflex is calling on everyone involved in project specification to aim for all PVC-U cable management products installed in buildings to include at least 50% recycled material by 2028.

specify cable management products with higher levels of recycled content. The positive news is that this is a trend we are seeing in the industry, but more still needs to be done. Both post-industrial waste, such as discarded material and off-cuts from manufacturing, and post-consumer waste from products such as windows removed from buildings, can be reclaimed and recycled. Manufacturing products from this reclaimed material is not a new innovation. For example, Marshall-Tufflex has been using reclaimed PVC-U in the manufacture of its products for over 25 years. Over the years the company has continued to invest in research and development to increase the proportion of reclaimed material. In 2020, this figure was an average of 74%, with all white conduit and white mini and maxi trunking lengths manufactured using 100% recycled material. This is currently saving the equivalent weight of 300 double decker buses going into landfill each year.

WITH A SPRING IN OUR STEP! With some signs of a slow recovery and increased movement in terms of raw material availability, and opening travel corridors, 2022 should be a less challenging year for product manufacturers and suppliers. However, we must remain agile, flexible and responsive if we are to meet the needs of a fluctuating market and wider environment exacerbated by a booming construction sector, says David Mattin, Managing Director of Dietzel Univolt.
D
avid says, “For Univolt, as with many other product manufactures, we are consolidating our business and marketing our current product range rather than investing in the development and launch of new products. For us, it’s important that we focus on our core cable management solutions, notably our LSFOH and SLXL – premium safety driven trunking solutions; as well as core lines – bench trunking, power poles and PVC tray. “With more and more contractors moving towards offsite construction and MMC, it’s important that we are able to support this movement with our own product range. We are already working with specifiers and architects to supply prefabricated products and systems that can range from bespoke colour, length and width to a fully prefabricated solution that is supplied ready to simply slot in. We are seeing a lot of demand from the student accommodation sector, where an offsite approach is increasingly considered the norm.” According to David, the benefits from a cable management perspective are instantly evident, saving time on site and far less labour intensive work resulting in cost reductions as well as reductions in waste. Whilst the majority of UK construction are not switched on to this fully just yet, David believes that this approach is undoubtedly on everyone’s radar and will become fully integrated into the industry throughout the next decade.
Access to raw material remains challenging
“More conversations with end users will help our industry understand the contractors’ needs as they evolve, and clear guidance from government is vital as they drive Modern Methods of Construction onto our industry,” says David. “We will continue to pilot this approach in off site and prefabrication with the aim of becoming a go to supplier within this niche field. “Issues surrounding logistics and transport still remain challenging and much of 2021 was spent managing delays and disruption. As issues with COVID-19 slowly ease and we adapt to Brexit, we are all finding our feet within a new landscape. Our manufacturing facility in Austria allows us access to a steady stream of core products and we have been innovative in securing transport solutions to ensure our client orders are met. These issues, we believe, will continue to ease as the year gathers pace. “Access to raw material remains challenging – costs continue to fluctuate and remain difficult to source but again, we believe and hope that these concerns are alleviated as markets begin to react less in the face or threat of change. “We have begun working with the MOD on a number of projects who recognise our SLXL as a strong fit for their refurbishment and new build projects. Their commitment to specifying our products has been a welcome development and one which we believe will provide a springboard in opening new doors to more clients who may be considering this type of specification.” The SLXL product range has been under development for some time from Univolt’s headquarters in Austria. It offers a higher ignition point of up to 15% than standard PVC, the halogens contained within the products are released at a slower rate, therefore, smoke release is also reduced by up to 65% in the first four minutes of a fire (when compared to standard PVC dado trunkings). Not only does it essentially complete the Univolt range catering for Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat8 and OM3 Fibre Optic cables but it now offers far reaching safety benefits through its slow burning fire resistant properties.

PREMATURE COLLAPSE OF WIRING SYSTEMS Jake Green, Technical Engagement Manager at Scolmore Group, considers the general requirements of Regulation 521.10.202.
A
fter several tragedies, Regulation 521.11.201 (AMD 3 BS 7671: 2008) was introduced; its purpose being to limit the risk to firefighters from entanglement by cables when they entered or exited a premises. This regulation has now been renumbered as 521.10.202 but remains essentially the same, except for the removal of any reference to escape routes. It now reads: “Wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire.” This requirement should not be confused with the recommendations of standards like BS 5266-1 (emergency lighting) and BS 5839-1 (fire detection and fire alarm systems), which recommend methods of cable support to maintain circuit integrity during a fire.
Under fire conditions, failure to make the right installation choices may lead to serious consequences
Premature collapse
Escape routes and BS 7671 The original regulation referred to escape routes, and this generated a level of confusion: ‘How should escape route be defined?’ BS 7671 defined escape routes differently to that used in other guides, regulations, and legislation. For example: • B S 7671 – ‘Path to follow for access to a safe area in the event of an emergency’. • Building standards technical handbook – means a route by which a person may reach a place of safety. • Approved Document B in England and Wales – that part which a person has to traverse before reaching either the safety of a final exit or the comparative safety of a protected escape route…
“There is a great deal of responsibility placed on contractors to apply Regulation 521.10.202”
The removal of ‘escape routes’ from the regulation now means that it applies to all areas of the installation.
There is no specific definition of ‘premature collapse’ to be found in Part 2 of BS 7671. One dictionary definition of ‘premature’ is, ‘occurring or done before the usual or proper time; too early’. Since the purpose of Regulation 521.10.202 is not to maintain the critical signal path, rather to limit the risk to firefighters; premature collapse should be considered in relation to that single purpose. Electrical contractors, network installers and the like are not best able to judge how fires behave, the likely temperatures that will be attained, nor how firefighters will carry out their role within a premises that is on fire. It is important therefore, that electrical contractors and other installers give due consideration to the support given to wiring systems to provide maximum reasonable application of Regulation 521.10.202. Will such supports be sufficient if firefighters damage ceilings when applying water? • C able clips – metallic clips are essential as indicated by Note 3 and 4 of Regulation 521.10.202. • Brackets or internal clips for PVC trunking – to keep the lid or cables in place (see Note 3 of Regulation 521.10.202).

INNOVATIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM SUPPORTS MMC The management of cables can now be classified under Modern Methods of Construction thanks to an innovative prefabricated bracket and track suspension system that is fast becoming the system of choice for contractors, not just in the UK, but globally.
O
ne such project which has benefitted from using the Fast Trak suspension system is Merlin Park University Hospital in Galway, Ireland. The scheme, designed and delivered by Rhatigan Architects as part of two simultaneous projects, involved the delivery of an ambulance base for Galway City, a two-storey building which sympathetically echoed the original building design and a €1m extension housing two brand new orthopaedic theatres. The modern purpose-built theatres were developed to serve the needs of Galway and surrounding regions.
Challenge All successful construction projects delivered on time and within budget are reliant on the effective working of contractors and consistent supply of materials in-line with the schedule of works. However, more often than not, timescales are squeezed, which is where prefabricated products really come into their own. Sub-contractor H&F Electrical Contractors was chosen to deliver the electrical services at Merlin Park University Hospital and wanted to ensure timescales were met. One way in which
The solution Fast Trak was selected for the suspension of electrical containment on site. The quick bracket suspension solution was chosen to reduce labour intensive on-site activity and help simplify the additional cable containment along with pipework and ductwork in building services applications. One of the new features of Fast Trak is the enhanced bracket innovation, which allows installers to fit the bracket in any orientation. Enabling the use of standard channel products and accessories as well as its unique quarter turn accessories increases flexibility. There is also a suspension point guide, providing faster and safer alignment of brackets as well as a pioneering four-way latch which can be used in any orientation. This negates the need for tools and provides a much faster and simpler installation and quick adjustment. The advancements made to the track include a ladder style – this allows brackets to be installed in increments of 10mm, meaning specified heights can be kept with minimal effort, also enabling the tiering of brackets, to increase the number of services per run. The new manufacturing technologies developed mean that the ladder track is now curved and can be snapped or bent, providing a neat and tidy finish with minimal to zero waste, all while delivering increased track rigidity and load ratings.
Contractor’s thoughts The Contracts Manager for H&F Electrical says: “With the tight programme we have, we needed something that we could get in quickly, so Fast Trak fit the bill. The services we’ve installed using Fast Trak has been containment, tray, basket and trunking. By using Fast Trak we’ve been able to save a considerable amount of time on the installation and I would definitely recommend the system to others.” In fact, statistics show that Fast Trak can make installations on average six times faster when compared with traditional threaded rod installations. RETROFIT AND REFURBISH — EASY OPTIONS FOR CABLE PROTECTION When it comes to upgrading the electrical infrastructure of existing properties, retrofit cable protection options can help electrical contractors capitalise on a growing refurbishment market. Alex Smith, Technical Director at Flexicon, identifies some of the areas to consider when specifying retrofit cable protection and how the right system can help speed time on the job while protecting vulnerable or existing cabling.
T
he UK Green Building Council reports that the built environment accounts for a staggering 40% of UK emissions. Environmentally friendly retrofit solutions such as new heating, ventilation systems and enhanced energy management control and monitoring are increasingly specified – but all will require electrical cabling installations and infrastructure to be upgraded. In the 2021 Vision report, 96% of electrical contractors interviewed stated that new products to enable sustainable new builds and renovation of existing properties represent an opportunity for their business growth. And elsewhere, homeowners are being encouraged to upgrade to energy efficient solutions such as solar panels and heat pumps. These drivers are all leading to increased demand for retrofit electrical wiring systems, that will avoid major disruption to the building fabric or fixtures. It is important to minimise the duration of installation programmes to avoid unnecessary delay and disruption, meaning many contractors are seeking new cable protection solutions that help reduce time on the job.

How to retrofit?
Protecting new cabling
Most contractors are familiar with the complexity of traditional retrofit cable protection solutions, with the installation team required to pull existing cabling through the open end of a conduit system. Conduit system manufacturers have been offering slit conduit options for some time, enabling installers to wrap insert the existing cabling to avoid disruption. However, it is important to ensure that the choice of flexible conduit system continues to offer the appropriate levels of protection for the environment and does not leave any areas of cabling or the installation exposed. Divisible conduits, such as the new Flexicon FPADS range, allow existing cabling to be inserted laterally via a slit opening. This product consists of two open conduit profiles, which then interlock to form a protected IP40 system around the cables. It is also important to consider the cable routing. Traditional split conduit options can potentially expose cabling when bent or routed around corners, whereas the newer, divisible conduit options will maintain more mechanical strength and continuous protection of the cabling, irrespective of orientation or routing due to their interlocking design.
As well as considering retrofit options, specifiers may also be tasked with installing new electrical cabling at the same time. In this scenario, there is a broader range of options available, and specification should consider the range of external hazards that the cabling may be exposed to; whether that is to meet a certain IP rating, enhanced fire performance properties, resistance to chemicals or UV exposure to name a few. Where fatigue life or impact resistance is important, installers should consider nylon polyamide (PA) corrugated flexible conduits, which can offer high impact strength and recovery if crushed combined with excellent temperature performance. Polypropylene and PVC conduit systems are available; however, both systems are inferior to nylon polyamide (PA) when it comes to fire performance, resistance to solvents and their abrasion resistance properties. With no exposed metallic content, non-metallic conduits do not rust or corrode, thus maintaining performance and appearance over time. In addition, it is worth considering labour and installation time. Non-metallic systems are often quicker to install than metallic options as they are easier and faster to cut. Non-metallic fittings will typically be one piece and simply push on and twist to secure. For more complex application requirements, customers should speak to their supplier to discuss bespoke options. These could include conduit supplied in non-standard or pre-cut lengths, in larger or smaller diameters or with different thread termination or fitting options. Additionally, more complex requirements, such as altering performance characteristics to meet a certain temperature requirement, compression strength or abrasion resistance or to achieve a greater fatigue life may also be considered.

ounded in 1919, the University Hospital based in Lanarkshire, Scotland wanted to upgrade its existing car park and interior reception lighting. Powerlite Fitzgerald was approached by Bradstone Lighting to provide an onsite survey and lighting design. Having worked together for over 20 years, Bradstone Lighting chose Powerlite Fitzgerald’s systems and experience for the application of a low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing solution. Hairmyres Hospital was looking to create a safer car park environment for its staff and visitors. It also wanted to reduce the running and maintenance costs associated with its high-level lighting. Powerlite Fitzgerald was able to assist in creating a car park with a more uniform spread of light, reducing light pollution, whilst giving Hairmyres more control over directional lighting to create better coverage. Powerlite Fitzgerald also worked with Bradstone Lighting to create a more

welcoming entrance/reception area for patients and visitors by installing lighting solutions with warmer colour renderings, which was previously unachievable with its old discharge fittings. Due to the 24/7 need of the car park – which has constant pedestrian and traffic movement – access was often difficult to orchestrate. EXTERIOR LIGHTING FOR COMMERCIAL PREMISES Exterior lighting is an important consideration for any commercial property design, essential for heightening safety and security as well as enhancing a building’s aesthetic and visual appeal.

When designing and installing an external lighting scheme, considerable thought must be given to energy consumption and ratings
hen approaching the design and installation of exterior lighting for a commercial building, a great place to start is by defining why it is needed and what function it is expected to achieve. Is it purely a design element or is employee or visitor welfare a key concern? Once these crucial concepts have been detailed, it’s then time to consider individually the different spaces that require illumination. Of course, the design elements will differ according to the requirements of each individual project, but commonly this will encompass car parks, pathways, pavements to the entrance doors and the entrance area itself. Façade lighting to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the building may also be a requirement for the illumination of company signage unless already supplied pre-lit by a specialist sign company. When it comes to product specification, in each area it is likely that different products will be most suitable. For car parking areas which are remote from the building structure, floodlights and street lights are an ideal solution, providing high levels of illumination to keep individuals and their vehicles safe. It’s also worth ensuring that the specified luminaires are specifically designed to minimise glare for drivers moving around the car park. For pedestrian walkway and access areas, bollard lights are a stylish and practical way to illuminate the path and improve safety after dark. Typically, two to four feet high, bollards improve visibility by projecting light horizontally and/or downward. Many are also CCT selectable, enabling different colour hues to be delivered.

The obvious choice for entrance areas are wall mounted lights. Available in a huge range of styles, encompassing both traditional and contemporary designs, wall lights are not only practical lighting options but have decorative appeal too. As with bollards, many are CCT selectable, meaning the same hue can be achieved throughout the external scheme. Regardless of the type of fitting required, when it comes to external lighting it is also important to consider the construction of the products selected. Die-cast aluminium, polycarbonate or stainless-steel casings are robust and offer the best performance against the elements for a longer lifespan. Ensure products with a hight IP and IK rating are selected. At a time where energy costs are spiralling and businesses and other commercial organisations are focussed on reducing their carbon emissions, when designing and installing an external lighting scheme, considerable thought must be given to energy consumption and ratings. LED light sources are the most energy efficient available, using about 85% less electricity than incandescent bulbs and as much as 50% less than fluorescents. They have a much longer lifespan too, ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 hours or more at constant operation, requiring less maintenance. Automation plays a key factor in improving energy use and automated technology should undoubtedly be incorporated in an eternal lighting system. Where possible, utilising ‘smart’ products to create a connected system will deliver the most controllable and energy efficient external lighting solution available. Systems embedded with technology such as Octo WiZ Connected technology enable

numerous luminaires to be linked together and controlled, allowing different scenes, groups and schedules to be created as required. This means that external lighting can be set to come on automatically at the end of the working day, for example, or colour temperature can be programmed to become brighter during the late afternoon as natural day light begins to fade. Scheduling time of use, output levels and colour temperatures will all ensure optimum energy use and will eliminate any reliance on human intervention – reducing the risk of users accidentally leaving the lights on and wasting energy. Alternatively, products with either photocell or motion sensor detection technology will also help to optimise energy use. Floodlighting, street lighting and bollard products are often fitted with this technology, enabling the luminaires to turn on as either daylight reduces or motion is detected and off as morning light brightens or stillness resumes. They are convenient, low maintenance options that require almost no human intervention once installed. One final consideration in the external lighting planning process is emergency lighting. It is advisable that there should be a proportion of lighting products incorporated within any external lighting scheme that has emergency functionality, delivering illumination to keep areas safe and secure even in the event of a mains power failure. Emergency lighting can be an integrated feature within the mains lighting equipment or dedicated stand-alone luminaires can be used – either way, it will need to meet the requirements detailed within BS5266-1:2016, BS1838:2013 and BS EN 50172:2004. DW WINDSOR’S REN BLOSSOMS AT RHS GARDEN WISLEY Located in the heart of leafy Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley is one of the UK’s most frequented gardens and one of the horticultural charity’s premier green spaces. The society is currently undergoing a £160 million redevelopment programme encompassing several major projects, including the UK’s first dedicated horticultural scientific centre of excellence at Wisley, RHS Hilltop – The Home of Garden Science. RHS Hilltop is surrounded by four acres of ‘living laboratories’ set in three new gardens, with the Wellbeing Garden designed by Matt Keightley of Rosebank Landscaping, and built by Mark Gregory of Landform Associates. The site is open to the public and will highlight educational opportunities and scientific work in the field of horticulture. Lighting was a key element of the Hilltop project. It was vital that functional lighting was provided to ensure the safety

of all staff and the 1.5 million annual visitors to RHS Garden Wisley. Ben Brace, Greenspace Projects Manager at RHS, specified the lighting. Having a working knowledge of DW Windsor through previous roles, Ben approached the British manufacturer to supply the exterior lighting. Ben specified DW Windsor’s Ren bollard to illuminate the surrounding pathways within the Wellbeing Garden. REDUCING LIGHT POLLUTION FOR DARK SKIES As light pollution increases, curbing the environmental impact of urban lighting is growing in importance. In this article, Dan Griffiths, Technical Manager at Tamlite Lighting, outlines how high quality and consistent solutions can make a difference.
N
o one would deny that the problem of light pollution has become more acute as society has moved towards round the clock living. In the words of Amanda Gormley from the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), “The disappearance of the night sky is tied up in our ever more fast-paced world.”[1] The quality and consistency – or lack thereof – of urban lighting has been a frequent topic of discussion for many years. Simultaneously, there has been a growing awareness of its impact in the environment. Most recently, the Countryside Charity CPRE and the British Astronomical Association’s Commission for Dark Skies sought public assistance in evaluating how light pollution affects the night sky. Such is the current impact of sky glow, it is estimated that 55% of the population in the UK cannot see the Milky Way[2], whilst only 22% of England has pristine night skies, considered as completely free of light pollution. [3] The IDA cites the major causes of light pollution as: “Glare or excessive brightness; sky glow, which drowns out the night sky over urban areas; light trespass or stray lighting falling where it is not needed; and clutter, or confusing groups of bright light sources.”[4] It is not hard to envisage the scale of the problem faced in the UK when you consider that there are more than nine million street lamps and 27 million offices, factories, warehouses and homes. Moreover, the density of urban spaces – and the potential lighting output that comes with it – is increasing at a rapid rate. Data shows that in 1950 the urban population as a percent of the total population was 79%. By 1990 this had grown to 88.7%, and by 2030 it is expected to reach 92.2%.[5] To address the issue, better designed urban lighting is needed – whether it is street lighting, lighting the exterior of buildings or in public spaces – to strike the right balance between light and darkness. Here are Tamlite’s top tips for achieving this.

• Switching to LED lighting: LED lighting is extremely energy efficient. Indeed, the Energy Saving Trust reports if every street lamp in the UK was upgraded to LED, it would save in the region of £77 million.[3] • Design considerations: Poor lighting design results in energy waste, light spill and light intrusion, and the IDA estimates that 35% of artificial light is wasted by being poorly aimed or unshielded.[7] The nature of urban spaces may be subject to considerable variation – from busy side-streets to parks – but it is vital to invoke one universal design principle: that lighting should be highly directional and provided only when and where it is needed. Modern LED systems ensure that lighting is radiated into the right space at the right time, in a way that minimises light spill or trespass. Upward Light Output Ratio (ULOR) describes the amount of upward light distributed from a luminaire. For urban lighting solutions, this ratio needs to be as small as possible, to ensure that the output is angled downwards, only where it needs to be. • Assessing the area: Another key aspect of urban lighting design that also gets largely ignored is the lack of consideration for the individual requirements of a given area. In many cases, standard fixtures can be applied across the board. Yet, it is essential to ensure that the lighting is appropriate for its environment, whether that’s a major road, residential street or a pedestrianised city centre. For example, a high street will typically require a far higher and more dense level of illumination (10-20 lux) than a suburban space that could fall under the remit of dark-sky preservation orders (5 lux). • Illumination levels: The level of illumination at different times of night is key. In the evening, exterior lighting eases the transition between day and night, allowing people to adjust to darkening skies. This is particularly important in the autumn and winter as daylight levels are low during rush hour, and many people are walking to or from work. ‘Good lighting practice is the provision of the right light, at the right time, in the right place, controlled by the right system’ is the introduction to the ILP Guidance Note, GN01/21, The Reduction of Obtrusive Light and goes on to talk about how the control and reduction of obtrusive light is hugely important for exterior lighting. The invention of artificial light and its application in the external environment has done much to safeguard and enhance our night-time environment but, if not properly controlled, obtrusive light (light pollution) can present serious physiological and ecological problems.

• Colour considerations: When designing exterior lighting solutions, it is also important to take into account the colour of the luminaires installed. For example, blue-rich white light is particularly troublesome when it is excessive, especially in areas where houses are adjacent to commercial properties, because it can impair circadian rhythms and sleep. It is also significantly brighter than most alternative lighting solutions, which increases the level of light trespass and has damaging consequences for both humans and wildlife. By lowering the colour temperature to warmer whites creates a lighting solution that benefits both nature and people.
Better designed urban lighting is needed
The importance of proper planning when lighting urban spaces is bound to become even more crucial as the number of people living in towns and cities grows. Those who want to deliver a safe, attractive, and sustainable environment would be well advised to give lighting due care and attention throughout their urban spaces, working on the basis that a well-specified and efficient lighting infrastructure can be a benefit to all citizens, and the environment, for generations to come. LIGHT UP YOUR SECURITY Securing a home or business property from unwanted attention doesn’t necessarily mean investing in the very latest CCTV system. Exterior security lighting can provide a simple to install and affordable way of enhancing home and business security. Neil Baldwin, Managing Director at ESP, looks at some of the options available.

or some home and business owners, it may be a case of starting from scratch with the provision of security; for others a case of replacing old and corroded equipment or upgrading to a more sophisticated and reliable system. The installer working on the project can do an assessment of the requirements and advise on the best solution to meet specific needs. For those clients with no external security measures in place to protect their properties, the installation of a simple camera and security floodlight system could be the answer to deterring unwanted intruders. There are a range of products available, such as a complete, all-in-one, energy efficient, high-performance LED PIR floodlight system. A combined security camera and LED floodlight, like ESP’s GuardCam LED for example, is suitable not just for securing domestic properties, but also for areas around offices and industrial or agricultural units. These systems are straightforward to install by simply

The built-in PIR sensor fitting provides added security, and it comes with predefined settings
connecting to the mains power, fixing to the wall and setting the time and date via the supplied SD card. Once switched on it will detect an intruder, floodlight the area, and initiate a high definition video recording directly to an internal SD card. If selected, an audible warning can be delivered, and users have the ability to record their own warning message. For a more sophisticated solution there are Wi-Fi versions available that offer the additional benefit of remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet. ESP recently added a 2K (4MP) Wi-Fi Security Camera with adjustable Twin Spots to its GuardCam range, offering installers a high specification, superior resolution product. With the typical resolution for security cameras in the market currently at 1080p (2MP), ESP’s 2K (4MP) offer sets the security light apart in a competitive marketplace, providing a key selling point for installers and end users. It makes an ideal contemporary upgrade from an old and worn floodlight and includes the option for remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet, using the specially developed, subscription-free, ESP Smart 2K app. The in-built 2K (4MP)
camera offers notifications and video storage in the event of motion and human detection triggers, and the adjustable 5000K dual LED lamps (with a combined 2600 lumen output) provide flexible options for light coverage. It is available in a white or black finish and features a robust, IP65 rated housing. For other projects, it may be that exterior lighting is required simply to light up areas to the front, back or side of a property to make access around these areas safe during the dark. If this is the case, there are a number of options for a good quality LED floodlighting provision. Today, there are slimline low energy LED floodlights available that are meeting the growing trend for a stylish, more aesthetic lighting solution than the bulky options often associated with floodlights. A range like ESP’s NightHawk Plus offers a choice of wattage/lumen outputs to ensure a solution for a broad range of applications, from small walkways, through to large gardens and work yards. The range offers 10W/800 lumen, 20W/1600 lumen, 30W/2400 lumen and 50W/4000 lumen fittings, with each one available as a straightforward floodlight and as a PIR version. The standard fitting is switched on and off manually or can be wired into an external device – such as a digital timer – and is suitable where control of the lighting system is preferred. The built-in PIR sensor fitting provides added security, and it comes with predefined settings – range, Lux level and the trigger time duration parameters – for ease of use. The fittings are simple and straightforward to install using the adjustable bracket supplied. They each offer a 4000K colour temperature which produces a cool white output and they feature a textured diffuser which helps prevent an intense glare and adds to the overall aesthetic design. Each product in the range is available in black or white to maximise the choice and appeal to suit all exteriors. The robust housings are IP65 rated. Even where an existing external light or security light might be in place, chances are that it is old, corroded and out of order. Yet, a fully functioning, replacement solution can be installed in no more than 15 minutes and without the need for additional cabling. This is an easy solution for installers to sell to customers. here has been a seismic shift to digital working in recent years and the pandemic has accelerated that trend. A lot of electrical contractors have already made the first move to be at least partially paper-free, with software available for accounting as well as for compliance, job booking and scheduling – and many have also installed vehicle tracking. However, these various systems often operate separately, which increases workloads and complexity along with the challenge of dealing with multiple suppliers. Staff have to switch from one system to another and then manually enter data for customer reporting, invoicing and accounting. Nevertheless, digitalisation is no longer an option, especially for contractors looking to attract bigger clients. Property investors, retailers and large facility management companies have all been busy automating their processes and now require real time, digital reports; proof of compliance, digital certifications and evidence of the ‘job done’.

The £10 million turnover company operates a fleet of more than 20 Ford Transit Custom vans for its mobile engineers. Quora uses the BigChange field service management software, which it says is enabling it to win new public sector tenders. Craig Firth, director and co-founder of Quora Group, says, “BigChange is definitely a sales tool for us and has helped us to grow the business. We work primarily in the public sector, with contracts predominantly in healthcare and education. In these environments there is a high level of compliance and documentation required. BigChange enables us to offer a far higher level of service in terms of digitised, evidence-based compliance and reporting than a company that still uses a paper-based system. It has been a big advantage for us in terms of winning and delivering these public sector contracts.” The North Tyneside company started out in 2005 but has grown from a father and son operation into a thriving business with

more than 50 direct employees. “Part of that growth has been down to BigChange,” adds Craig. “We use it across three of our four divisions, and it has helped us scale quickly. It is a simple product to use but it has so many functions and our clients love it.” Quora uses BigChange in its electrical, service and maintenance, and water treatment divisions. A complete, simple to use and easy to integrate platform bringing together customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, field resource management, job finance and business intelligence. BigChange allows for all job scheduling and reporting to be done digitally, eliminating the need for mobile engineers to visit the office to pick up or drop off job cards. Rugged PDAs are also used to record job completion, including photographic evidence. “The ability to adapt the work sheets is a great feature of the software,” says Craig. “We have just won a big contract for a local authority, and that includes specific documentation that they want us to use. I can create a worksheet in BigChange and provide them with a document that is exactly what they want.” Quora also uses live tracking for its emergency call-out service. “We have service level agreements that require us to respond to emergencies within a certain time frame,” says Craig. “With BigChange we can see the locations of the engineers in real time, identify the person who is closest and has the right skill set to respond to the call-out, then inform the client with an accurate ETA.” Quora Group has three ISO accreditations: 9001 (quality management), 14001 (environmental management), and 45001 (health and safety). BigChange has helped it achieve all three. “As part of our ISO management system we use BigChange to monitor and measure the greenhouse gas emissions from our vehicles,” adds Craig. “It also helps with our health and safety management, because we can easily provide evidence that we have done what we said we were going to do.” BigChange, bigchange.com

REMAINING AT THE FOREFRONT OF DIGITAL SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT Andy Reakes, Head of Growth for the Joint Industry Board, discusses some of the new digital systems aimed at improving customer experience and raising industry standards.

CSCS Smart Check represents a major step forward
or over 50 years the Joint Industry Board (JIB) has verified applicants’ qualifications, experience, identity, training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in order to issue them with a registration and grading. This is now the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) and covers more than 175,000 individuals across the electrotechnical industry. The JIB administers ECS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while in Scotland it is administered by the Scottish JIB. ECS is a partner of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), covering electrotechnical occupations as well as specialised industries such as audio-visual, building controls and network infrastructure. ECS is often a requirement for construction sites but is also recognised as the personnel certification scheme of choice across the built environment, with a number of public and private sector clients such as councils, NHS trusts, universities, government departments, internet service providers, house builders and social housing organisations, and many more. Throughout the last few years, ECS has been working on a number of system improvements and new digital systems to enhance value for individuals and employers alike, including:
• MyCPD – a new Continuing Professional Development digital system, allowing all ECS card holders to record and evidence their CPD directly into their online records in MyECS. • ECS Check for Clients and the Supply Chain – a smart digital platform giving visibility through supply chains of the electrotechnical workforce and a Licence to Practise System in Northern Ireland. • Remote Invigilation – advanced biometric mapping and monitoring software to allow greater flexibility with online assessments. • CSCS Smart Check – an industry initiative to develop one app which can verify cards from all the CSCS Partner Schemes. CSCS Smart Check was developed through the CSCS Alliance; the forum of 38 Partner Card Schemes displaying the CSCS logo and Andy was tasked with Chairing the Delivery Group which was set up to oversee this project considering different vendors and proposals, ensuring that the delivered output was one that worked for all; a cost-effective, secure solution compatible with multiple technology platforms and systems, and one which can be quickly and easily used at project entry.

Major step forward CSCS Smart Check represents a major step forward as, for the first time, all 2.1 million cards displaying the CSCS logo can be electronically verified using a single app. Sites should require everyone working in a construction occupation to hold a card displaying the CSCS logo and they should be checking those cards regularly to ensure they are genuine and in date. However, with 38 schemes offering CSCS logoed cards and many using their own (often incompatible) card checking systems, the process can be complicated.

This places an unrealistic expectation on site management teams to know every scheme and every type of card available together with the different verification systems used. With CSCS Smart Check, sites and projects of all sizes have a quick and simple way to check that any operative working in construction and the built environment is who they say they are, are suitably qualified for the job they are being engaged to do and have kept up to date with the latest requirements for health and safety, technical qualifications or CPD. The app will allow options for scanning contactless cards (chips or through near-field communication), scanning QR codes (both those printed on cards and within virtual card apps), and a manual entry system for those currently without smart technology. CSCS Smart Check will also help the industry in the battle against fraudulent cards – alerting site managers and CSCS to such cards in order to cancel them and alert authorities where necessary. The roll-out of the app begins in April 2022 and will be free to use and available for Apple iOS and Android devices. Having one app to electronically check all cards at the site gates will make life easier for those responsible. It doesn’t matter what card turns up at the site gates – from asbestos to welding, if it displays a CSCS logo it will be compatible with the CSCS Smart Check app. Existing systems will also remain in place as both a back-up if needed and for access to services from each scheme, such as CPD recording platforms, card application and renewal processes. ECS is committed to remaining at the forefront of digital system development to improve value for card holders and employers, work collaboratively to raise standards and promote the benefits of a skilled and qualified workforce.
