TRIAL SHOWS THAT ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING WILL HELP THE GRID

Electric vehicles could be the largest contributor to flexible capacity in our electricity grid, according to recent data captured by myenergi

In recent months, myenergi has supported UK grid events – with thousands of customers signed up to offer flexible capacity.

With more than 13MW of aggregated flexible capacity in total – equivalent to the average power consumption of 40,000 homes – myenergi has been sending commands to zappi chargers that have responded to grid events by reducing their consumption by an average of 2.4kW per household. This offers far more flexible capacity than other demand side response (DSR) platforms, which have largely seen consumers reduce home energy consumption by turning off lights and other appliances.

ESR AND TRUSTMARK ONE YEAR ON: WORRYING TRENDS

Over a year on from the launch of the reporting tool for unsafe and non-compliant electrical work, following a unique collaboration by the Electrical Safety Roundtable (ESR) and TrustMark, the results continue to highlight electrical safety concerns in the owner-occupied sector.

70% of the electrical safety faults which have been reported over the last 12 months are in the owner-occupied sector, with 27% of total responses submitted identifying a category 1, immediate risk to life, hazard. These statistics highlight an undetermined risk in an area that is not currently covered by any legislation to require regular electrical safety checks.

Electrical Safety Roundtable Chair, Chris Pack, comments, “The information collected through this reporting tool suggests that, proportionally, electrical safety standards in owner-occupied dwellings are of concern, and in some cases pose a risk to life. We would urge the government to take heed of these findings, and support Lord Foster’s Domestic Premises (Electrical Safety Certificate) Bill, which requires an electrical safety certificate to be provided to prospective purchasers of domestic premises in specified circumstances.”

With 57% of those utilising the tool being registered electricians, 32% being homeowners and 11% being tenants, there is broad interest in the initiative, which allows a fuller picture of the electrical safety standards in homes to be gathered.

SPRING BUDGET: ELECTRICAL SECTOR WELCOMES ENERGY BILLS U-TURN

ECA has broadly welcomed the Spring Budget, praising the extension of the energy support guarantee for another three months. However, the association has warned that the Chancellor’s corporation tax hike could harm electrotechnical businesses, especially SMEs, as they continue to face fiscal pressures from the energy crisis, the cost-of-living crisis, and inflation.

ECA Director of Legal and Business, Rob Driscoll says, “SMEs are a vital part of the construction sector, which itself is the backbone of the British economy. Today’s corporation tax hikes come at a time when SMEs have dealt with COVID-19, hyperinflating labour, materials and energy costs, rising insolvencies, receding demand and increased borrowing costs.

“This budget may prove to be counter-intuitive and hinder businesses’ ability to pivot into delivering our urgent net zero targets. The drive to net zero hinges on skilled engineering services professionals doing the frontline work to upgrade our grid, electrify transport and heating, and connect our homes and businesses to clean energy sources.”

ECA Director of Workforce and Public Affairs, Andrew Eldred, says, “The measures announced by the Chancellor to encourage people back to work fail to address sector-specific labour and skills shortages. TRADESPEOPLE CALL FOR MORE TO BE DONE TO ENCOURAGE APPRENTICESHIPS

The majority (85%) of tradespeople think there is a shortage of apprentices entering construction, according to the latest research from Screwfix

When it comes to attracting future talent, while nearly all (99%) tradespeople would recommend a career in the trades, 92% believe more can be done to encourage people into the industry.

When quizzed on why they would recommend a career as a tradesperson, 86% said it was the pride in a job well done, while being your own boss (72%) and customer satisfaction (64%) came in second and third respectively.

Looking at the support needed to take on an apprentice, just 12% said they knew how to do it, with assistance and advice for hiring (39%) and training (31%) apprentices identified as the biggest barriers.

To encourage more apprentices into construction trades, and help tackle the ongoing skills shortage, last year Screwfix unveiled a new initiative to fund the training of trade apprentices. Working in partnership with TrAC, Screwfix will support both apprentices and employers with financial support to cover the cost of training.

BCIA REPORT REVEALS BEMS SECTOR VALUED AT £835M IN 2022

Data from the Building Controls Industry Association’s (BCIA) latest Market Information Service (MIS) report has estimated that the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) sector is now worth around £835.8m to the UK economy. The new total represents an increase of 8% from the 2021 figure, and the BCIA believes the sector will be pivotal to the government’s decarbonisation agenda, with building controls playing a fundamental role in realising a carbon neutral built environment.

BCIA’s Graeme Rees comments, “The 2022 full year results saw the highest set of figures recorded to date and the opportunities are undoubtedly there for the building controls industry to build from this position of strength.”

The MIS report lets BCIA members see trends, market growth and segmentation in the BEMS industry. The latest growth reflects an upturn in the market as estate owners and facilities managers demand greater energy performance and a reduction in energy costs, and reinforces the BCIA’s collective influence in government policy and the deployment of building controls by building users and developers.

Manufacturers’ revenues rose by 7.7%, up to £86.9m, whilst system installers’ revenues rose by 10.4%, up to £404.9m. The 2022 figures suggest that system installers have enjoyed increased revenues from installed systems, while manufacturers have continued to increase their third-party product sales, particularly to system installers. SELECT WELCOMES EXTRA FUNDING FOR ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIPS

SELECT has welcomed additional funding for electrical apprentices and adult trainees, following a plea to government – but has joined training providers to insist that support must continue to prevent future shortfalls of talent.

After making an urgent appeal to Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, SELECT says it is good news that Skills Development Scotland (SDS) will now meet the cost of an outstanding 87 apprentice and 68 adult trainee places for 2022/23.

But while there is relief for those recruited in 2022, the body says it is worrying that extra places won’t be funded in 2023 and beyond – and insists the Scottish Government must support the sector by providing full funding for those seeking to be apprentice electricians.

The additional funding followed an appeal by SELECT in December to John, asking him to allocate extra money to vital training as part of the nation’s transition to a net zero future.

SELECT is now asking its 1,250 member firms to contact their local MSP and reinforce the need for proper funding to ensure a steady pipeline of properly trained apprentices and adult trainees is maintained. SELECT, select.org.uk

NEW GRID SITE ENERGISED TO POWER EBBSFLEET GARDEN CITY’S FUTURE

A new electricity grid site has been energised, providing essential new power infrastructure for the development of Ebbsfleet.

The completion of the main grid site, which will be supported by two main electrical substations required by the new development, paves the way to power up to 15,000 new homes, schools and businesses.

UK Power Networks’ new grid substation is a central part of an electrical engineering project that will deliver 77MW of power to Ebbsfleet residents, unlocking the potential for new neighbourhoods, new homes, jobs, schools and leisure facilities, and could also enable the connection of low carbon technologies as the UK progresses towards net zero.

Mark Adolphus, Director of Connections at UK Power Networks, says, “Energisation of this new grid site marks an important milestone to help unlock the future growth and development of this area over the coming years.”

“We are delighted to be working closely with Ebbsfleet Development Corporation to help them realise their vision to transform this area into a vibrant, new, sustainable community.”

The existing Northfleet east grid site has been reconfigured to enable two new 132,000V points of connection to the new Ebbsfleet Grid site. The new grid site involved installing two new 68-tonne transformers and a new 33,000V switch house and switchboard. Transformers play an essential role in delivering electricity by stepping down the voltage, to safely flow to homes and businesses.”

TESP PARTNERS WITH JOBSAWARE TO TACKLE ROGUE TRAINERS

The industry’s fight against ‘rogue trainers’ offering inadequate and unethical training packages has been boosted by a new partnership between The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) and JobsAware, a government-backed organisation set up to prevent job scams and labour market abuses.

TESP’s Rogue Trainers campaign was launched in 2021 to warn against training providers who offer expensive packages that are not industry-recognised, targeting those wishing to retrain in skilled trades such as electrical work. High-pressure sales techniques are often used alongside a large financial commitment and loans, but often the training is low quality and does not live up to what was promised, leaving learners out of pocket and feeing desperate.

The TESP website has advice for those interested in becoming an electrician on the correct routes to becoming qualified, tips on choosing a training provider and the red flags to avoid. Since its launch, the Rogue Trainers advice has received over 20,000 views, and TESP is regularly contacted by those who signed up for a training package and qualifications they now realise are unattainable.

Through the new partnership, TESP will continue to provide information and signpost individuals to report rogue trainers to JobsAware, who are well placed to take action and progress cases with the relevant authorities. Often, the training providers in question will repeatedly close down and set up businesses under different guises in order to avoid detection, an issue both partners are monitoring.

A new restaurant from Caprice Holdings is using ABB building automation for precise control of lighting to create the optimum ambience.

When Caprice Holdings opened Bacchanalia in November 2022, the restaurant became an important place to be seen in London’s Mayfair, as well as one of the world’s finest dining experiences.

Conrad Energy has announced that its 25MW 50MWh battery energy storage site (BESS) in Blackpool was successfully energised to Electricity North West’s (ENWL) 33kV network in late January, following stringent pre-commissioning and functional testing of the safety critical features of the plant, and satisfying UK grid compliance testing requirements.

Battery storage is a vital ingredient for the stabilisation of the grid, in line with the transition to renewable and low carbon energy. Battery storage technology has advanced in recent years, allowing it to fulfil its crucial role in maximising the usefulness of renewable energy, by flattening out some of the curves in supply created by weather fluctuations.

C-TEC’S CAST XFP FIRE SYSTEM SCORES AT SOUTH SHIELDS FC

C-TEC’s CAST fire alarm system is now in operation at South Shield’s Football Club’s 1st Cloud Arena Stadium.

The ‘Mariners’ recently invested in a state-of-the-art 900-seater stand with executive boxes, function rooms and boardrooms in a move to upgrade facilities and generate additional revenue.

FAST TRAK SOLUTION CHOSEN FOR NEW CAMBRIDGE DEVELOPMENT

Gripple’s Fast Trak pre-fabricated bracket solution has been specified for One Cambridge Square, a new office and retail space within the heart of Cambridge North.

Working alongside main contractor, Wates, and subcontractor, PA Collacott & Co, Gripple supplied its rapid fit trapeze system Fast Trak to suspend electrical containment throughout each floor of the 94,000ft2 building.

Gripple’s Fast Trak also enabled PA Collacott & Co to overcome challenges on the site, including the fact that the cable baskets and trays had to navigate through different heights and levels on each floor, whilst retaining an uncluttered appearance and not compromising safety.

An electrical supervisor from PA Collacott & Co says, “Fast Trak has definitely helped us to deliver this project much more quickly. We had some tricky steel beams to get through which Fast Trak helped overcome, with its quick adjustment mechanism – which would have been difficult and time consuming with traditional methods. A whole floor took two installers four days to complete – the same space using traditional methods would have taken at least three weeks, saving a great deal of time and labour!”

As One Cambridge Square is BREEAM Excellent rated, it was an added bonus that Fast Trak offers carbon savings over traditional methods. Fast Trak helped to save 4,464kg of embodied carbon on-site, the equivalent to driving 15,338 miles. Gripple, gripple.com

FIRST KENSA GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP SWITCHED ON

Kensa Contracting and Thurrock Council have celebrated an important milestone as the first energy and carbon saving ground source heat pump was switched on. It is one of over 270 residences benefiting from a landmark energy upgrade scheme delivered by Kensa Contracting.

Kensa’s sustainable, low carbon ground source heat pumps are replacing night storage heaters in three social housing high-rise tower blocks at Chadwell St Mary in Thurrock. They are estimated to reduce fuel bills by over 50% for some households, due to them being three times more energy efficient.

Replacing the night storage heaters with ground source heat pumps will not only reduce running costs by up to £500 per year, but also cut carbon emissions by 70%. This will save an estimated 7,080 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the heat pumps – the equivalent of taking 1,540 cars off the road.

Cllr Luke Spillman, Thurrock Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, says, “Getting the first of 273 households at Chadwell St Mary up and running with a renewable heating system is a milestone that should be celebrated. Kensa’s ground source heat pumps are providing residents with reliable, efficient, and future-proofed heating which utilises the natural heat in the ground. This innovative project will help make these homes warmer and greener and drive down fuel bills.”

NEW AND IMPROVED LIGHTS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN WORKSOP

Bassetlaw District Council has installed a series of new lighting columns in the Memorial Gardens, Worksop to improve the safety of people walking through the park during hours of darkness.

A total of five new lights, paid for by national Safer Streets funding, have been set up along the pathway behind the Aurora Centre that links Worksop Library with The Canch.

The council will also upgrade several existing lights in the Memorial Gardens, The Canch, and along Church Walk, a popular route between the town centre and residential areas in the south of Worksop. An additional light will be installed on Chapel Walk to help improve the safety of people using these routes.

Cllr Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at the council says, “This is the latest in a series of measures we are proud to introduce to make Worksop’s streets safer, especially for women and girls.

NEW ONLINE COURSE FOR ELECTRICIANS LAUNCHED

A new online course designed to make learning more accessible and flexible for electricians has been launched by an electrical training provider.

The 18th Edition Online Course has been created by Sussex-based training provider Electrician Courses 4U and aims to provide new or existing electricians with an in-depth understanding of the most up to date wiring regulations.

The course, which is accredited by City & Guilds, covers the key chapters and appendices of the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations 2018 Amendment 2 book, as well as providing students with the qualification needed to join a government approved Part P scheme provider.

Since launching towards the end of last year, the course has not only proven to be very popular but achieved extremely high pass rates too.

In total, nearly 200 customers have booked onto the course and, to date, 97% have passed the exam first time.

BAXI TO DELIVER TRAINING AND ADDED INSTALLER INCENTIVES

Baxi has been working alongside the government to develop its new £5 million Heat Training Grant, designed to support 10,000 trainees to become low carbon heating experts with grants of up to £500 over the next two years.

Baxi has pledged to match the £500 government grant with another £500 worth of Baxi Works loyalty points for installers who use the voucher to train and achieve Baxi’s BPEC accredited qualification.

Upon completion of the course and registration of the installer’s first air source heat pump, points can be redeemed against a range of rewards, including gadgets, vouchers, tools and workwear.

“This is a great scheme, and we welcome the government’s focus on skills and its commitment to the installer community – who are keen to participate in the transition to decarbonised heating in buildings,” says Jeff House, External Affairs and Policy Director at Baxi.

“The conversation on heat pumps has to move beyond purely product and must recognise the necessary industry change needed around specification, installation and maintenance – all of which will be addressed by the training programmes provided by us and others under the scheme. This is absolutely critical to gaining consumer confidence around new technology”, he adds.

THINK REFURBISHMENT… BUT RE-THINK USING LED TUBES

With the imminent T8/T5 ban, LED tubes appear a quick win for refurbishment projects. Graeme Shaw, Technical Director at Zumtobel Group UK & Ireland, discusses the key considerations before ordering.

Building operators carrying out lighting refurbishments are faced with reducing energy costs and carbon emissions, alongside improving the use of the space.

One key driver is the pending T8/T5 fluorescent tube ban.

From September 2023, the sale of inefficient T5/T8 fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) will be phased out of the European and UK market. This is in accordance with the Ecodesign and RoHS directives (and UK equivalents). Lighting schemes currently using the soon-to-be-banned halogen or fluorescent lamps will need new light sources.

Preparing the switch in good time can help to mitigate inevitable availability issues and rising costs. Those who switch now can save more.

LED tubes – a quick win?

There are some quick wins from retrofitting LED lamps, but there is a lot to consider before pressing the order button.

Many choose LED tubes for cost or speed of replacement. However, is the existing fitting suitable? If it has been in place for some time, there is the risk of plastic degradation – which could easily result in breakages whilst removing the existing tube

A bodged job or extra costs for replacement parts: making a ‘quick fix’ slower and more expensive than planned.

Thermal and weight considerations

A product will have been designed for a specific technology’s weight and thermal characteristics: aspects that significantly differ between LED and fluorescent technologies. LEDs require a method of heatsinking to remove heat. Which adds weight. The lamp holders are specified based on a specific lamp weight and increasing this weight can result in them being insufficiently robust to hold the LED tube.

Consider users of the space

The photometric performance of a product – how efficiently it produces and distributes light – is based on the light source it was designed for. Calculations will need to be re-run when replacing fluorescent with LED. LED tubes may not provide the same directional light output: often not meeting EN1264:1 2021 legislation.

Impaired, poor, non-uniform lighting or glare will affect the experience and comfort of those using the space.

Efficiency

Efficiency is generally declared for the complete luminaire. For LED replacement lamps it is declared for the lamp and therefore requires de-rating to account for thermal and optical losses when operated within the product. This must be correctly considered to realise expected efficiency savings.

Controls and emergency

Usually non-dimmable and non-compatible with the existing control system (if in place) LED tubes generally do not offer emergency lighting compatibility – which means a new emergency lighting system –fitting and labour costs.

If any product being retrofitted with LED lamps has an emergency lighting function, the correct operation of the new luminaire concerning requirements of EN 60598-2-22 and relevant application requirements, such as EN1838, will need to be verified.

Correctly fitted emergency lighting is a legal requirement.

Will your warranty be intact?

When LED tubes were first launched, removing the ballast and starters in the existing fluorescent fittings was recommended. The ballast reduces the long life of the led tubes, and they are more likely to reach their expected 30-50,000 hours life if removed, but working with a qualified electrician to remove the ballast and rewire it to direct power naturally comes at a cost – the warranty on the fitting from the manufacturer is now void.

Today, LED tube manufacturers are making electronic ballast-compatible LED tubes and providing starters to change out from the older ones. But the age of the existing ballast should be considered. If they have been operating for some time, you may have seen flickering and assumed the tube was the problem, when the ballast could be failing due to power fluctuations. This isn’t good for a fluorescent tube and certainly won’t be for a LED tube either. If your existing ballast is failing and potentially damaging the LED tubes, the warranty on the tubes is now void.

Suppose the product is altered – for example, rewiring to remove existing components from the electrical circuit, the safety tests become null and void, and any marking on the product, such as the UKCA/CE mark, should be removed, as well as the original manufacturer marking.

Legally, the product must be retested and recertified in its new configuration to the relevant safety standards before it can be operated.

Compliance cannot be assumed

Formal testing, to ensure conformity with the EcoDesign and RoHS legal requirements, is required with documented results in the technical product file.

An additional implication of modifying the original luminaire is that any existing warranties will become invalid.

So, in short, the likelihood is that the fitting has to be re-certified, as all safety certification is void. It is effectively a new fitting.

In conclusion, when it comes to a quick, cost-effective replacement for T8/T5 tubes, LED tubes seem like a quick win. But if you consider the above, is it your best option?

NET ZERO ENGINEERING — CREATING HEADQUARTERS FOR THE FUTURE

Can you tell us more about how you decarbonised your HQ?

Firstly, we needed to understand what the carbon emissions for our headquarters were – we did this in partnership with Tunley Engineering, a leading decarbonisation consultancy. We then looked at where carbon reduction improvements could be made in the building, and the best way to go about achieving them. Finally, we commissioned our engineers to undertake the work, bringing in specialist contractors where needed.

Why did you do this?

As a business we’re committed to decarbonising our operations as soon as possible – we’ve set ourselves the target of becoming a net zero organisation by 2035 at the latest.

In addition, as well as supporting our ongoing net zero efforts, the project provided a great opportunity to implement new technologies which will be of benefit to our clients as they continue their own decarbonisation journeys.

What new technology did you install?

To help transform our headquarters into a net zero building, BGEN engineers undertook the following:

• Replaced the HVAC system – an aged twin gas boiler heating system was replaced with a new Hybrid VRF system.

• Fitted solar panels – a 21kW peak solar array was installed on the office roof. This feeds an inverter that injects additional energy into the power distribution system when available.

• Installed water reduction technologies – simple measures such as reducing water flow at hand basins and installing push taps and split flush systems on toilets have reduced water consumption by several hundred litres per day.

• Transferred the electricity supply to an Ofgem certified eco-tariff

• Fitted LED lighting – upgraded the building’s entire lighting system to an intelligent LED system. The light fittings all communicate with a central controller, and an occupancy detection system ensures that lights are not left on when they do not need to be.

• Installed electric vehicle charging points providing 12 EV charge points

• Developed control and energy monitoring systems – designed and installed a new monitoring system that collects real time energy consumption data from each circuit, allowing the organisation to target future improvements. Water usage and building occupancy is also monitored.

What was the biggest challenge?

Given works were taking place at our head office, the biggest challenge was maintaining business as usual.

To achieve this, we offered more flexible working in addition to what employees now utilise following a change in working practices post COVID-19. For example, while installing the HVAC system (which took approximately two weeks), we needed to close off one floor at a time.

What will deliver the biggest carbon/energy saving?

The new Hybrid VRF HVAC system. The system uses air source heat pumps to extract thermal energy from the ambient air and release thermal energy from cooling into the air. This is up to four times more efficient than directly heating the air in a conventional system.

Our new digital monitoring system indicated that the new HVAC system delivered a 4,500-6,000kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) saving over a like-for-like three-month period.

What role did digitalisation play?

Digitalisation played a key role and will continue to do so as we look to make further carbon reduction saving across the business.

We see the innovative digital solutions, such as resource (e.g. energy/water/ material) monitoring and live carbon (CO2e) calculations, installed at our headquarters as a real game changer. We’re currently rolling these out at some of our other sites, including a manufacturing facility in Warrington.

We also see real potential in optimising the monitoring in our head office building further. Examples include building in alarms to flag unexplained energy spikes, and automatically altering lighting and heating requirements for when meetings are scheduled in the building.

How did you get net zero status?

The works carried out enabled BGEN to eliminate all scope one and two emissions associated with the building. We offset all remaining scope three emissions (which in reality can only be addressed and lowered as new technologies become available) by supporting verified carbon reduction projects and planting 207 trees in the north west. The net zero status of the building was independently verified.

INSPIRING, INFORMING AND INFLUENCING

CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector.

EA: I first got into the sector when I was working in a finance and planning role for a national building contractor. This gave me a great insight into how the construction sector works and how important teamwork and professionalism are on site. Having been interested in engineering and technology since an early age, I was later pleased to take up a role at what was then the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), which later led to becoming Finance Director after the merger which led to the formation of the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology).

CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that the IET does?

EA: As well as our role in the Wiring Regulations (BS7671), the IET is known as one of the world’s largest engineering institutions, with 154,000 members across 148 countries. It’s our mission to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, supporting technology innovation to meet the needs of society. This includes being a significant publisher of academic research.

We’re here to support our members at every stage of their career, from those just starting out to those who have worked in the profession for most of their life. We offer learning and development resources, mentoring, accreditation, support for students, career support, professional registration, plus lots of courses and training. We also work to inspire the next generation of engineers through a range of education programmes and initiatives that aim to challenge outdated perceptions of engineering and technology and show just how exciting, creative and varied careers in the sector can be.

CW: Tell us about your current role – what are you responsible for and what does the normal working day consist of?

EA: The IET is a membership body and a charity, so the role of Chief Executive is to lead the staff team and work with the trustees to develop the strategy of the organisation. My working days can be quite variable, for example, in the morning I might be at the staff offices in Hertfordshire looking at operational performance, and in the afternoon perhaps a meeting in parliament where IET is promoting solutions to improving the take-up of engineering sector skills in the education system.

A good amount of my time is spent meeting with stakeholders to understand how best we can work together and build relationships with our partners. This will often take me to universities or engineering employers, as well as other professional institutions with whom we work. We are active internationally, so occasionally I’ll be working with colleagues around the world.

CW: What are the best things about your role? What are the most challenging?

EA: It’s a tremendous pleasure to lead the IET, and for me, the best part is working with our diverse network of members, volunteers and colleagues. We touch every part of engineering and technology and I know that the work we do really is trying to help make better sense of the world and solve challenges that matter.

The most challenging part is making sure I can keep up with all aspects of what the IET is doing, and spending enough time both inside and outside the organisation to ensure we apply our resources where we can have most impact.

CW: How has COVID-19 affected the industry? What are the positives to come from the pandemic?

EA: Throughout the pandemic construction sites largely remained open but, as time went on, some construction materials were in short supply and, of course, like everything else, prices of materials rose significantly. We have just passed the third anniversary of the start of the first UK lockdown and some supply chains are still struggling, with prices of materials seemingly still rising.

Looking at positives, we all went through a sharp learning curve with technology – meetings were held remotely and the process of ordering of materials online was streamlined, for example. Construction processes have evolved too – for example, electrical contractors working on the new football stadium for Everton are working remotely on the electrical installation in modular form. Once assembled it will be moved to site for installation and commissioning. This approach has really grown following the pandemic.

I also think looking at the engineering and technology sector more generally, the pandemic really showcased our fantastic medical professionals, scientists and engineers who were working so hard to

find solutions. It put them front and centre during the crisis and raised awareness of how important STEM is to our daily lives, especially when faced with the big challenges for society.

CW: Aside from COVID-19, what have been the biggest changes across the industry in recent times? What will be the biggest changes in the future?

EA: Looking at the electrical industry specifically, the biggest change is without doubt smart technology in electrical installations. Domestic electrical installations used to be about lights and sockets; but this is changing so quickly. The ability to control lighting, heating, security, you name it, from our phones has changed things forever. We’re also seeing a huge rise in the growth in renewable energy, such as heat pumps and battery storage – the days of the ‘evergreen’ electrician are over. With so much new technology coming in, skill sets are constantly needing to adapt and be agile – every electrical installer must keep up with the changes to ensure they remain competent.

CW: What’s next for you and for the IET?

EA: My focus for this year includes driving forward our influence, knowledge and expertise to show the role that engineering and technology plays in the future of our society and planet, specifically in solving societal challenges. We have a 2030 strategy that focuses on the needs and

challenges of society. By 2030, we hope to accelerate the pace of development and adoption of technology that supports the move towards a zero carbon future. We also aim to increase public trust in digital technology, and support practitioners through a period of change with the application of standards, regulation and the sharing of best practice.

CW: Do you have any career advice for anyone starting out in the industry?

EA: Whenever I meet young engineers, I’m impressed by the energy and enthusiasm they have, as well as the knowledge they can bring, for example, in relation to new technologies. I would encourage anyone in early career to be curious, eager to learn and not be afraid of taking on new challenges or responsibilities. It’s those challenges which give us the opportunity to develop, gain recognition and progress in our careers. It also helps to be open minded about what roles you take on –quite often the doors that open in life are unexpected, so flexibility can sometimes lead to new opportunities.

Finally, I would encourage those starting in any sector to spend time with more experienced colleagues, who can often provide insights in how an organisation works and help with any issues that come up.

CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market?

With so much new technology coming in, skill sets are constantly needing to adapt and be agile

EA: I’m interested in sustainability, so from my perspective I’m excited about the increasing role of domestic renewables and power storage, heat pumps, vehicle to grid and the way these technologies are reshaping power distribution and storage.

I’m also a fan of smart home technology, and particularly how these can be integrated into existing homes in simpler and more resilient ways. It’s often said ‘there’s an app for everything’, but I would hope we move towards a position where there is more integration and standardisation which allows ‘one app for everything’, at least for home management.

CW: What are your interests away from work?

EA: I do enjoy a practical project so last summer I was building a cabin in the garden as well as remodelling an old pond. As with many of these home-office projects now, extending ethernet capability and using smart sockets provided the connectivity and automated control that suited me.

My wife and I discovered a new family activity this year with Parkrun – a great way to start any weekend with a sociable 5k run and a coffee. I was also one of those people who took up paddleboarding during the pandemic, and I do find it a great way to get outside, get some exercise and reconnect with nature. I have dabbled with wild swimming, but after a particularly chilling experience on Christmas Day I’ve decided there’s no shame in staying on, rather than in, the water.

SPECIFY FOR A SUSTAINABLE SECTOR

For many businesses within construction, including electrical contractors, sustainability is an important part of their work, a core element of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy and an essential component of the tender process. Here, Jon Chamberlain, Managing Director at Marshall-Tufflex, discusses the environmental impact of the construction industry and how responsible selection of cable management systems can help to make a difference.

It is now clear that action has to be taken to reduce, and even reverse, the impact of human activity on the environment in order to limit the potentially disastrous effects of climate change.

For the built environment, which is estimated to account for 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint, the focus is often on reducing operational carbon – the ongoing emissions associated with the day-to-day use of the building. Until recently, the embodied carbon has largely been overlooked.

Embodied carbon is the CO2 emitted in producing the materials and products, from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing to installation in the building. This is one of the biggest issues for the built environment sector and the primary consideration for products such as cable management systems, which do not impact operational carbon emissions.

Industry impact – waste

In addition to carbon, there is also the issue of waste. More than a third of the UK’s annual waste comes from the construction sector alone, of which an estimated 25 million tonnes is sent to landfill. In terms of plastic waste specifically, over one million tonnes of PVC-U is removed from buildings each year across Europe, yet currently only 30% of this is recycled.

The issue of waste is closely linked to carbon emissions, as recycling plastic requires far less energy than virgin plastic production. For example, in a study undertaken by the University of Manchester, it was found that a PVC-U window made from virgin material has 20 times more embodied carbon compared to one manufactured with recycled content.

Finding a solution

This combination of factors demonstrates why the careful choice of products for both newbuild and refurbishment projects is so vitally important. The cable management products within a given building can represent a significant part of the interior fit-out, especially for larger buildings, so there is a real opportunity for contractors to have an impact on the embodied carbon of the project and prevent waste by working with clients to specify cable management products with higher levels of recycled content.

Both post-industrial waste, such as discarded material and off-cuts from manufacturing, and post-consumer waste from products such as windows removed from buildings, can be reclaimed and recycled. Over the years the company has continued to invest in research and development to increase the use of this material and today uses its own compounding machine to process the recycled material so that it can be used in the manufacture of new conduit and trunking systems.

The window materials are chipped, heated and forced through a fine mesh filter to remove impurities such as metal, rubber and non-PVC-U particles from the plastic. It is then cooled and cut into pellets before being checked for quality and colour consistency.

In 2022, Marshall-Tufflex manufactured PVC-U products using an average of 69% of recycled material across the range, with white conduit and mini/maxi trunking lengths regularly manufactured using between 80 and 100% recycled material. This is currently saving the equivalent weight of 300 double decker buses going into landfill each year.

Common misconceptions

Despite the clear benefits of using recycled content in manufacturing, such products have not yet been widely adopted. This is perhaps in part due to some misconceptions about the products. Firstly, there is a false assumption that recycled products may not offer the same strength or appearance. In fact, PVC-U conduit and trunking products with recycled content offer the same performance as the equivalent made from virgin materials.

Thanks to Marshall-Tufflex’s long heritage in extruding PVC and injection-moulding techniques that have been developed in-house, the company says it can offer superior products with recycled content that retain their high quality and outstanding finish. CUT THROUGH THE CONDUIT CONFUSION

Selecting the right flexible conduit system can be a tricky task. Neil Carter, Sales Director at Flexicon, outlines how to get it right.

The choice of which type of flexible conduit system to use for a particular application is an important one. It is vital that the solution you opt for not only protects all areas of the cabling, but also provides the appropriate levels of protection for its specific environment.

However, as every contractor knows, there is so much choice available that it can be a confusing decision. So, what are some of the factors you need to consider –and how can you ensure that you get it right every time?

The confusion of choice

Depending on its location, cabling can be vulnerable to a wide range of hazards. For example, it may be necessary for a flexible conduit system to meet a certain IP rating to prevent water or dust ingress, have advanced fire-performance properties, or be able to resist chemicals or UV exposure.

Alternatively, fatigue life or impact resistance may be the main hazards, in which case, the best solution is a nylon polyamide (PA) corrugated flexible conduit. This is because it offers high-impact strength and recovery if crushed, combined with excellent temperature performance.

If corrosion is the central threat, you will still want to consider a non-metallic conduit solution, since it does not rust or corrode and therefore maintains its performance and appearance over time, even when subjected to UV.

The number of possible hazards means every job must be assessed closely before a decision is made. This takes time and means contractors may have to carefully consider keeping or ordering different stocks for different jobs and projects.

The consequences of failure

It hardly needs saying that incorrect specification can lead to critical failures in the cabling. This is serious, and first and foremost, can have grave consequences from a health and safety point of view. It can also have vast repercussions in terms of infrastructure. We live in a highly interconnected world, and electricity is its lifeblood. Failure to adequately protect cables can bring businesses, processes, and even industries to a standstill – with a corresponding impact on your reputation if you are found to have been at fault.

The need to get it right every time means contractors must do everything they can to always have the right solution on hand for the application. HOW PRE-ASSEMBLED KITS CAN HELP TO ADDRESS INDUSTRY SKILLS SHORTAGES

Few in the industry would dispute the fact that two of the biggest issues facing contractors today are the skills shortage and the pressure to deliver projects for less, without compromising on quality or safety.

A 2022 survey of specialist contractors in the UK highlighted a range of business concerns, with material shortages, a lack of skilled labour, and delays to projects cited as worrying problems. Almost two in every five contractors (39%) named skill shortages as their most pressing business concern.

In addition, research shows that less than a third of contractors consistently finish jobs on time and within budget. In many cases, they lose as much as one full day’s work per week due to setbacks, inefficiencies, and often the need to supervise less experienced site staff and ensure there are no health and safety issues.

In today’s economic climate, this clearly has significant financial repercussions for small businesses and self-employed contractors dealing with the cost-of-living crisis.

Installing cable management systems can be a particularly time-consuming and complex part of any project. Modern MEP suspension systems are quicker to prepare and install than traditional methods, such as threaded rod, channel, nuts, bolts and washers. Using lightweight, pre-fabricated trapeze bracket suspension solutions, such as Fast Trak, means no cutting or hot works are required. By contrast, threaded rod and strut solutions require hot cutting on site, which represents a potential health and safety hazard. It also requires a certain level of ability and experience, or the direction and supervision of less experienced staff.

Offsite manufacturing solutions such as this are a major innovation in M&E service installation, creating leaner working methods, with modern systems removing much of the labour-intensive work traditionally undertaken on-site.

It also significantly reduces material use; for example, a length of wire rope weighs less than 1/10th of the equivalent

threaded rod needed for the same performance, and is much easier to handle and transport around site.

This delivers important carbon savings, as well as reducing manual handling risks and labour hours through the installation of these systems.

Drastically reduced installation times

Increasingly, contractors are now recognising the benefits of pre-assembled systems and are routinely specifying them as part of major new build projects.

London Design and Engineering UTC recently invested in a new £10 million campus, with Wates Construction as main contractor. The mixed University Technical College, situated in the London Borough of Newham, wanted to create an inspiring building which embodied its educational ethos.

Due to the strict timescales of the build, Wates Construction needed a proven method of drastically reducing installation times on-site, which would also deliver an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Wates opted to use Gripple’s Fast Trak system, due to the speed and ease of installation.

The total installation time for the project was 349 hours, compared to 1,635 hours for a traditional rod and strut system, while the overall labour cost was reduced by more than 75%. HINTS AND TIPS: MAKING CRIMPING SAFE AND SECURE

With the rapid increase in electric drives and the necessary control electronics, the need for fast and secure connections is increasing. Plug types such as Scotchlok connectors, Western plugs, module plugs, Cannon plugs and many more are suitable for crimping – the joining process in which the connection is made via plastic deformation using a compression tool. Here are five things to consider when crimping cable:

• Consider the crimping die shape: When selecting a crimping tool, make sure that the die shape matches the shape of the connector being used. The die shape should be designed to evenly distribute force around the entire connector barrel during the crimping process. Choosing the wrong die shape can lead to an uneven crimp that can result in high resistance or even arcing.

• Use the right crimping technique: There are several techniques for crimping, such as indent crimping, hexagonal crimping, and insulated crimping. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages and is suitable for different types of connectors and cables. Make sure to select the appropriate technique for the job.

• Choose the right connector material: Connectors come in a variety of materials, including copper, brass and

aluminium. The material selected should be compatible with the cable and the environment in which it will be used. For example, copper connectors are more conductive than aluminium, but aluminium is lighter and more corrosion-resistant.

• Use proper stripping techniques: To prepare the cable for crimping, it is essential to strip the insulation from the wire correctly. When stripping, avoid nicking or damaging the wire strands, as this can cause a weak or unreliable connection. Use a high-quality stripping tool designed for the cable’s size and insulation material.

• Test and inspect the connection: After crimping the connector onto the cable, it is critical to test and inspect the connection for integrity. Use a high-quality digital multimeter to check the resistance of the connection, and ensure that it falls within the manufacturer’s specifications. Inspect the crimped connection for any signs of damage or weakness, and replace or repair it as needed.

The complexity of possible crimp connections is continuously increasing. In addition to flexible and solid wires, fibre optic cables, antenna cables, telephone and LAN cables and many other types of cable can now also be processed with crimping tools.

Some of the tools even have innovative support features, for example, universally adjustable positioning aids or electronic displays for wear and the necessary calibration for crimping pliers for very sensitive crimp connections.

Due to the large number of different plug connections, crimping pliers in many different versions are required. As a rule, these pliers are operated with one hand – but there are also models for particularly large conductor cross-sections that facilitate two-hand operation thanks to their favourable design.

Cable management systems must ensure they are fit for purpose, compliant, robust, and contribute to a safe and healthy environment, using the material that best suits each application.

In environments where the health and wellbeing of occupants is vital, such as hospitals, care homes and schools, the specification of antimicrobial cable trunking systems is recommended to minimise the spread of germs and bacteria.

An ideal solution for such environments is a system that incorporates silver ions within a PVC-U based material.

Silver has been used for wound care for hundreds of years and, when used in cable management products, it disrupts the key cell functions of bacteria and prevents them from reproducing on the surface of PVC-U or ABS trunking, delivering ongoing antimicrobial protection that prevents 99.9% of harmful bacteria.

MAKING THE CASE FOR GRP

When selecting a cable management system for a corrosive or hazardous environment, there is a tricky balance for electrical contractors to strike. The type of material specified for products such as cable trays and ladders will not only impact how long the system will last, but costs, installation times, labour, and potential maintenance.

For many contractors, stainless steel is their preferred choice. However, switching to glass reinforced polymer (GRP) can tip the scales towards more effective and efficient cable management.

Made from a polymer reinforced with glass, GRP is non-corrosive and does not stretch or shrink, making it suitable for the harshest and most demanding applications in industries such as transport, water, energy, petrochemical and industrial. The material does not conduct heat or electricity, is resistant to fire, and offers excellent UV stability. These properties enable a ‘fit and forget’ solution that once installed, does not need to be maintained, significantly reducing lifecycle costs.

The installation process is simpler too. Making the right choice

GRP cable management products can be manufactured in different ways, providing contractors with the option of moulded or pultruded systems. There are, however, important differences between the two – which can affect the quality of the final solution.

The pultrusion process sees two types of fibreglass reinforcement pulled through a machine and then saturated in resin. The reinforced fibres are then pulled through a heated dye, allowing the resin to cure and harden. This creates a very solid profile with more linear strength than a moulded system, enabling it to accommodate higher loads and longer spans. This strength also protects the GRP from damage on site prior to installation, as there is no risk of it cracking if dropped or knocked by onsite vehicles.

The environmental credentials of GRP are strengthened further by its durability, meaning it has an exceptionally long lifecycle. However, if GRP is no longer needed for a particular project, it is also recyclable and can be repurposed. GRP waste fibres, for example, can be used for different applications, including asphalt mixes.

Adding value

Advances in technology and new product development are providing contractors with a wide range of options that can make their project more successful. For

ELECTRICAL EARTHING — DO YOU KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS?

BS 7430: 2011+A1:2015 is a code of practice for the protective earthing of electrical installations.

This standard is closely linked to the requirements of BS 7671 and, where relevant, both should be considered when dealing with earthing requirements.

BS 7430 provides recommendations on meeting the requirements for earthing electrical installations. The three areas include protective earthing of low voltage installations, the interface between LV and HV substations (11kV/400V), and

protective earthing and changeover switch arrangements for generators.

Earth electrodes

Earthing of a system (or equipment) requires a physical connection to the general mass of earth. The connection should have resistance such that any means of protection will operate as designed.

There are many factors that will impinge upon the resistance of the connection to earth. These will include the nature and properties of the soil within a location, rainfall, and the nature of the earth electrode. For example, light clay soils will have a relatively low resistivity (c. 5Ωm), whilst granite has a resistivity in the region of 1,000Ωm.

The presence of low volumes of rainfall will also have a significant impact on soil resistivity. For example, clay soil in locations having a normal rainfall exceeding 500mm/year has a typical resistivity in the region of 5-20Ωm, whilst in locations having a rainfall less than 250mm will have a resistivity range of 10-100Ωm.

An earthing system should be of high integrity and robust construction. The use of an earthing system using earth electrodes relies on the resilience of the earth electrode(s) for the safe functioning of the protection system within an installation.

The types of earth electrode can vary. Regulation 542.2.2 of BS 7671 recognises seven permitted types of earth electrode, including earth rods or pipes, tapes or wires, earth plates and the like. The most commonly selected earth electrode is the rod.

Application

Earth electrodes are to be (or may need to be) installed for: TT and IT earthing systems; earthed generator sets; to conform to Regulation 411.4.2; swimming pools having a PME earthing facility; agricultural premises; mobile or transportable units; EV charging installations; and prosuming installations. Where earth electrodes are installed, Regulation 542.2.1 requires that the earth electrode can withstand damage and take

account of possible increases in resistance due to corrosion. The means of connection must be electrically and mechanically sound (526.1) and be accessible for inspection, testing and maintenance (526.3).

Earth electrode resistance

Depending on the requirement of a particular regulation, the resistance of the earth electrode will have a maximum permitted value. For example, for a TT earthing system, Regulation 411.5.3 details the conditions that must exist where an RCD is used for fault protection. This regulation requires the disconnection time to be limited to:

i) 0.2s for final circuits (411.3.2.2) or 1s for distribution circuits (411.3.2.4), and

ii) RA X I n ≤ 50V.

Table 41.5 details the maximum earth fault loop impedances permitted for a range of values of RCDs.

However, due to the risks associated with drying and freezing conditions, BS 7430 references a note under Table 41.5 of BS 7671 referencing a value in excess of 200Ω not being stable.

The earth electrode resistance is less a function of the diameter of the electrode and more to do with the depth that the electrode is driven, the ability of the rod to be driven into the ground without damage, and the number of electrodes connected in parallel.

Clause 9.5.3 in BS 7430 details how the resistance of rod electrodes may be calculated. Where rod electrodes are to be paralleled to reduce the resistance, rods will have to be separated by at least 6m to gain the maximum benefit (Figure 14a BS 7430). The formulae to determine the resistance of a single electrode and parallel electrodes are detailed in clauses 9.5.3 and 9.5.4 of BS 7430. Clause 9 of BS 7430 details many more methods of connecting electrodes, and reference should be made to this standard.

THE WAY

With symmetric floodlights, on the other hand, the light is distributed evenly in all directions. Asymmetric floodlights can achieve up to a 50% better output utilisation into the intended illuminated area. With the benefit of a lower light pollution, they are best suited in areas where light distribution and its effect on neighbours is a consideration. This makes them ideal for installation in built-up areas such as towns and cities, for example, for use in sports grounds, warehouses and loading bays.

All Ovia Inceptor Ace floodlights are IP65 rated and come with a five-year warranty. They are available in a black finish, in 50W, 100W, 150W, 200W and 300W versions, with 4000K cool white LEDs. They are supplied with a 2m pre-wired cable flex for quick and easy installation, and a fully adjustable aluminium mounting bracket, which allows full control of the projection angle.

The Inceptor Ace floodlights are also available in photocell versions (100W, 150W, 200W and 300W). With all the features and benefits of the standard fitting described above, the photocell option allows for use with remote PIRs or microwave sensors. The photocell versions turn the light on when the light level drops under 10-20 lux and turns the light off once the light level is over 30-60 lux.

Gator LED Street Lighting

Ovia’s portfolio of floodlight solutions also includes the Gator range of LED Street Lighting with CTA Switch. With an IK10 housing and IP66 rated, Gator is ideal for lighting larger outdoor areas, such as car

beam angle. They are available in a grey finish and come with a five-year warranty. The reversible mount option is an additional feature. The mount bracket can be rotated and pivoted to allow for vertical or horizontal fitment, with no additional joints required. The Spigot size is 76mm and a wall bracket is available. The shorting cap can be replaced with a photocell sensor to assist with energy saving.

Inceptor Murus

Inceptor Murus is an LED Wall Pack with CTA Switch and a robust IK10 rated housing that makes it ideal in outdoor settings. The IP66 rated fitting is designed to be fast and simple to install and is available in 15W and 25W options and in a choice of standard, photocell and emergency versions. The photocell version can assist with energy saving by allowing the light to turn on and off at set lux levels. Inceptor Murus will turn on when the lux level is below 10-30 lux.

Installation of the Murus is quick and easy, thanks to the Push Fit/Piano Key Terminal Block and the floodlight can be Besa box or trunking mounted. All models include a CTA Switch, allowing the product to change colour temperature between Warm White 3000K, Cool White 4000K and Daylight 6000K. It is available in anthracite grey or light grey and comes with a five-year warranty.

DALI compatibility

Ovia also offers the Murus with a DALI driver. This means that the luminaire

can be monitored for energy efficiency and status. With the addition of DALI compatible sensors or programming to the system, the Murus, through use of Presence, Absence and daylight dimming, can maximise the efficiency of all luminaires. Through programming, DALI also offers the option of grouping luminaires, setting scenes and timed overrides, so along with all their other features and benefits would be suitable for all external applications.

DALI – the facts

• It is an open protocol – any manufacturer can use it.

• Installation is simple. Power and control lines can be laid together and no shielding is required.

• The wiring topology can be in the form of a star (hub and spoke), a tree or a line, or any combination of these.

• Communication is digital, not analogue, so the exact same dimming values can be received by multiple devices, resulting in very stable and precise dimming performance.

• All devices have their own unique address in the system, opening a very wide range of possibilities for flexible control. This also allows all devices to be individually monitored and maintained.

How does DALI work?

The core of DALI is a bus – a pair of wires that carries digital control signals from input devices (such as sensors) to an application controller. The application controller applies the rules with which it has been programmed to generate outgoing signals to devices such as LED drivers.

• Bus power supply unit (PSU). This component is always required. It maintains the bus voltage at the required level.

• LED fittings. All light fittings in a DALI installation require a DALI driver. A DALI driver can accept DALI commands directly from the DALI bus and respond accordingly. The drivers can be DALI or DALI-2 devices, but if they are not DALI-2 they will not have any of the new features introduced with this latest version, such as querying control gear failure, resending failed commands, or identifying devices.

• Input devices – sensors, switches etc. These communicate with the application controller using 24-bit data frames. They do not communicate directly with the control devices (DALI 2 only).

• Instances. Often, a device such as a sensor will contain a number of separate devices within it. For example, sensors often include a movement detector (PIR), a light-level detector and an infra-red receiver. These are called instances – the single device has three instances. With DALI-2, each instance can belong to a different control group and each can be addressed to control different lighting groups.

• Control devices – application controller. The application controller is the ‘brains’ of the system. It receives 24-bit messages from the sensors (etc.) and issues 16-bit commands to the control gear. The application controller also manages the data traffic on the DALI bus, checking for collisions and re-issuing commands as necessary.

SIGNIFY HELPS ILLUMINATE SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL

The project is part of a comprehensive development plan that puts Somerset on a trajectory to carbon neutrality by 2030. The retrofit also ensures a greater longevity for the county’s traditional lanterns, allowing Somerset to stay true to its cultural heritage.

The project is carried out with the support of the Council’s Term Maintenance Contractor, ENERVEO.

Somerset’s towns and city are currently lit by a combination of conventional and LED street lighting. Signify will upgrade approximately 20,000 remaining conventional light points with products from its Philips TrueForce LED range. Through the first phase of the program in 2022 the council estimates a saving of £160k per year (based on the revised 2022 rates) in energy costs and a full return on investment within the first 18 months of installation. In 2023, a second phase, which will see additional districts added to the programme, will further reduce energy expenditure and slash carbon emissions.

Somerset has been on its path to carbon neutrality since 2020, but skyrocketing energy prices and the need for safer streets for pedestrian and highway users have raised the urgency of replacing outdated technology with alternatives that are long lasting, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Switching from conventional streetlights to LED is a relatively quick and low cost intervention that can cut energy consumption by up to 50%, and the effects are immediate.

According to Signify’s own data, if the entire UK&I region followed the example of Somerset County Council and switched all conventional road and streetlights to LED, the country could save 603,000 tonnes of carbon and £520 million per year in energy costs.

Beyond energy and climate goals, upgraded lighting offers improved visibility to towns around the county, helping residents feel safe and secure, and boosting visibility for CCTV.

According to a report from global market research company, Market Research Future (MRFR), the global outdoor lighting market size is set to grow at a CAGR of 8.2% from a value of US$9.4 billion in 2020 to reach US$48.2 billion by 2030, driven by the growing adoption of energy-efficient and affordable products and increasing government focus on energy conservation.

Currently, outdoor lighting is used to add aesthetic appeal and increase safety and security. Global industry players are expanding their market reach through the development of innovative solutions in their outdoor lighting portfolio. Manufacturers of outdoor lighting systems provide various advanced solutions to the users with easy and smart control operation, better energy efficiency and superior illumination with low power consumption.

Providing the lighting security for a remote woodland dwelling

In a remote location, sitting on a hillside above a creek feeding the river Dart and surrounded by dense woodland, is a stunning rural property in Dartmouth that provides the ultimate tranquil retreat. The downside of its secluded setting, however, is the difficulty acquiring signals for TV, satellite and internet connections. This means that any systems requiring internet are working over site-wide Wi-Fi/Mesh networks with multiple Wi-Fi access points operating on 3G or 4G, and there is no hard-wired data connection to any of the devices.

These were the challenges facing the electrical contractor when the property owners decided to update the security for the extensive premises. Martyn Walley, Managing Director of Hide, the electrical contracting firm hired to undertake the security installation, looked to his experience working with ESP security products to provide the solutions that would overcome the client’s issues ESP’s GuardCam Deco was recommended by Martyn to provide the general security provision covering the various areas of the property. Four of the systems have been installed to cover the garage, patio/decking area, driveway entrance and the entrance to the boat workshop.

With a built-in camera that offers full 1080p HD live viewing and recording, the GuardCam Deco was the perfect all-in-one solution for these premises. On approaching the unit, GuardCam Deco detects an intruder with proven PIR technology at a distance of up to 10m from the unit. It floodlights the area, initiates a video recording and provides the user with an option to deliver a two-way audio message or activate the inbuilt alarm warning.

It features an adjustable 16W high-intensity LED Security Lamp (3000k colour light and 800 lumens) and you can remotely dim or turn on/off the LED lamp via the app. It will record up to 200,

Eight miles to the south east of Edinburgh, Dalkeith grew up in the Middle Ages as a baronial burgh under the successive control of the Douglases and Buccleuchs.

Today, it is the largest town in Midlothian and is twinned with Jarnac in the south west of France – home to international cognac brands.

In Dalkeith’s town centre, Jarnac Court is just one of several local improvement projects in Midlothian to have been given the go-ahead for funding from the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Capital Fund.

Situated along the Dalkeith high street, ex-council offices at Jarnac Court are now a multi-use development consisting of local businesses and residential apartments. When built in the 1960s, the Jarnac Court redevelopment was considered by many to be innovative – its odd shape and the immediate area were based on the phased demolition of the existing buildings and followed their street pattern to cause minimum disruption.

The Town Centre Fund 2019-2020 enabled local authorities to stimulate and support place-based economic investments, encouraging town centres to diversify and flourish and creating footfall through local improvements and partnerships. Specifically, this fund contributes to transformative investments which drive local economic activities and re-purpose town centres to become more diverse, successful and sustainable.

The regeneration of Jarnac Court aimed to revitalise the Dalkeith town centre and included paintwork, improved lighting, new seating, and paving repairs.

Wayne Clarke, Operations and Asset Manager at Midlothian Council, explains, “Jarnac Court was highlighted as an area for development under our economic development masterplan. The strategy was to create better usable spaces for people. We wanted an inviting area that would encourage the use of the space for events and gatherings such as night-time markets. The lighting was a key part of the

strategy – we also installed power sources to power these events.”

The chosen lighting solution was an arrangement of three Thorn Contrast RGBW DMX architectural floodlights with asymmetric optics on six bespoke aluminium columns. Positioned throughout the square, the floodlights are controlled by an Amaze Controller, creating a vibrant urban space that the council can set to a specific colour to support local and national events.

Derick Ramsay, National Sales Manager, Zumtobel Group, comments, “We were invited to tender, along with many of our competitors, but our Contrast scheme was considered the best approach and

LED UPGRADE DELIVERS £46,000 ANNUAL SAVINGS FOR THE MOD

Working with VIVO Defence Services, CU Phosco has replaced eight High Mast Floodlight Systems with the FL810 LED Area Floodlight – a dark sky friendly solution that meets all the requirements for CAP168 compliance.

VIVO Defence Services, a company that manages the Armed Forces’ built estate, was tasked with replacing the Wattisham Flying Stations’s eight High Mast Floodlight Systems, each carrying 5no 1,000W SONT floodlights. Working with the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), VIVO has developed a deep understanding of MOD culture, ethos, structure, and practice and employs a technology-enabled commitment to improving customer satisfaction levels, asset efficiency and user productivity.

Stuart Murray from CU Phosco says, “Technology has come a long way since we installed our FL444 SONT floodlights in 2001, so the project presented excellent potential for substantial energy savings.”

Paul Wright, VIVO Project Manager, Wattisham Flying Station, adds, “The concept was brought about by Wattisham Flying Stations DIO SEFM, Larry Allsop, after a high-level light failure. It was highlighted that VIVO should review the existing lighting system and supply a practical and cost-effective solution, incorporating sustainability solutions within the design and installation with support and guidance from CU Phosco.”

Using the existing 40m high masts, CU Phosco worked closely with VIVO to find the optimum LED floodlight for the airfield.

CU Phosco’s in-house team completed the lighting design, and its contracting team delivered the LED replacement within a week.

Ideal for replacing existing 1kW floodlighting systems, the chosen luminaire, FL810 LED Area Floodlight, provides a highly efficient solution for the airfield.

FL810’s cooling fins are optimised with a high surface area to quickly draw heat away from the LEDs. Vents created by the vertical cooling fins accelerate natural convection through the heatsink. The rising hot air draws cold air in from below, immediately cooling the LEDs and maximising their lifespan and light output. This cooling effect ensures FL810’s high efficacy is maintained over its life.

The low-glare, dark sky friendly solution meets all the requirements for CAP168 compliance and limits obtrusive light to the surrounding environment. Furthermore, its excellent CRI ensures excellent visual conditions for the helicopter pilots on the aircraft stands.

The floodlight’s superior energy efficiency has delivered 64% energy savings, helping VIVO to deliver an annual reduction of £46,000 in electricity costs for the MOD, with a payback of under 2.5 years.

STIRLING ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMS WITH MOBILE WORKING TECH

An electrical and security system company carrying out domestic and commercial work across Scotland, Stirling Electrical replaced a number of disconnected systems with the all-in-one solution from BigChange. Using a BigChange mobile app, synchronised in real time with the back-office system, Stirling Electrical has reduced the amount of paperwork it produces and processes by around 80%, improved operational efficiency by 20% and is winning more tenders.

“In our first decade we were entirely paper based, however, in 2007 after 10 years of business we made, what was at the time, a significant investment in field service software from America. This was a big step and a one few companies of our type and

size were taking,” comments Scott McLean, Owner and Director of Stirling Electrical Services and its security system division, Stirling Alarms. “We also started using standalone vehicle tracking and navigation equipment at about the same time.

“These systems did boost productivity and reduce administration, but only in part. We were still manually producing paper job sheets which, when completed, needed scanning for historical reporting, and the tracking and navigation didn’t ‘talk’ to each other or other management processes. Established in 1996, Stirling Electrical Services is an electrical and security system company operating locally in and around Stirling, and nationally across Scotland. With a team of qualified engineers, electricians and apprentices, Stirling Electrical offers fault finding, installation, maintenance, inspection and testing services, while experienced office staff are on hand to deal with initial job enquiries through to job completion reporting. Integrated vehicle tracking and navigation, combined with intelligent and responsive scheduling has further boosted daily productivity and simple things like engineers no longer having to ‘phone-in’ at the start of the day or end of a job are making a real difference to the work that can be completed each day.

The ability to automatically capture on-site information including date stamped photographs and ‘no-touch’ signatures, introduced to support COVID-19 restrictions, together with other processes enabled by BigChange, are also helping Stirling Electrical secure additional contracts with public sector organisations such as housing associations.

“Although we have already made significant improvements in our management and reporting processes using BigChange, there is always more that can be done,” Scott continues. “Moving forward, we can achieve additional efficiency gains by integrating with our accounting and financial reporting functions, and we hope to implement the online booking portal for some of our larger customers.

SENSE TO HELP GREENWICH RESIDENTS UNDERSTAND THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN REAL-TIME

DG Cities and the Royal Borough of Greenwich are collaborating with Sense in a pilot study aimed at reducing energy usage and costs for council residents.

Through the Sense app on their smartphones, residents will be able to monitor the energy consumption of individual appliances in real-time and receive notifications about opportunities to save energy. The pilot will also test how behaviour change techniques such as nudges can be used to reduce energy consumption.

The UK faces rising energy prices and a cost-of-living crisis, making energy savings a top priority for households. The pilot will help residents to take control of their energy usage and save money, while also reducing the carbon emissions of each household, in line with the UK’s goal of reaching net zero by 2050.

Councillor Pat Slattery, Cabinet Member for Housing, Homelessness and Neighbourhoods says, “The cost-of-living crisis has heavily affected our residents and we are working to help local people in every way we can. This is a fantastic way for residents to understand how much energy they use and find out ways they can reduce their monthly bills. It’s also a great way of connecting with others in the community by sharing tips and advice.”

DG Cities recognises that there are important technological advances from industry that can give people insights to make choices that are right for them. DG Cities is also concerned with ensuring that this trend can be inclusive and new technology accessible to groups that may otherwise be harder to reach or may not have the means to purchase and test such technology.

As part of the trial, Royal Borough of Greenwich council residents who opt in will receive an R&D Sense energy monitor which will be installed into their fuse boxes to measure the electricity consumption of the whole home, as well as individual devices. Outside of this walled pilot, Sense collaborates with smart meter manufacturers, energy retailers, and grid operators to run the Sense application directly on smart meters.
