Hello and welcome to the August issue of ECN. This month, an expert has shared 10 ways that tradespeople can reduce their day-to-day business costs, from fuel expenses to marketing. Thomas Goodman, construction expert at MyJobQuote, shared advice with ElectricalDirect on how to cut a variety of costs, including:

1) Opt for quality over quantity – invest in good quality tools and make sure you take out tool insurance too.

2) Buy in bulk – getting quantity discounts on regularly used materials will keep costs down.

3) Know your expenses – research which expenses you’re allowed to claim back on, so you can get as many deductions as possible when it comes to filling in your tax return.

4) Consider employee fuel cards – you can track how much you’re paying in fuel and all invoices go directly to your business for use when you fill in your tax return.

5) Scout for van insurance – shop around for van insurance instead of using the same company every year and accepting an automatic renewal.

6) Use your vehicle as an advertisement –spend some money putting your business name, logo and contact information on your van to attract new customers.

7) Keep updated with the latest discounts –check for offers and discounts on materials that you use regularly.

8) Find the best phone and internet packages – it pays to change providers occasionally to try and secure a better deal.

9) Automate your administration – automating parts of your administration, such as invoicing, can save time and money.

10) Switch to an electric or hybrid vehicle – not only to reduce your carbon footprint, but also to save money on fuel costs.

In this issue we have a diverse range of features lined up, covering essential aspects of the electrical contracting industry including Cabling & Cable Management, Tools & Workwear, and Wholesalers & Distributors.

I speak to Mark Rasbuary from ECN Awards sponsor, CEF, in this month’s interview, and we also bring you the latest industry news, contract updates and product launches to keep you up to speed on what’s going on in the electrical contracting industry.

Plus, don’t forget to enter this month’s competition for your chance to win a QUBEV Smart home charger worth nearly £500, courtesy of Rolec EV!

I hope you enjoy the issue – see you next month!

TRAVIS PERKINS COLLEAGUES FUNDRAISE FOR MACMILLAN

Twelve Travis Perkins supply chain colleagues recently participated in the London Royal Parks walk to raise money for its charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Raising a total £2,500, the walk spread over 13.1 miles, the same distance as a half marathon, and covered four out of eight royal parks including Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’ Park and Kensington Gardens. Starting the walk at 9:45am, the team made it over the finish line just over six hours later.

Costing £33 to fund a Macmillan nurse, the colleagues raised enough money to fund 75 nursing hours, helping the charity’s mission to provide physical, financial and emotional support to those living with cancer in the UK.

Taking part in the walk, Supply Chain Director, Brian McCarthy, says, “I’m really proud to be working with a team of people so willing to walk a half marathon to raise money for Macmillan. It was a seriously hot day, however, we all completed the walk with not too many blisters or injuries. Cancer is a close cause to many of our hearts, so we’re really proud of our fundraising efforts and hope to continue to do our bit to support Macmillan where we can.”

Since the launch of their partnership back in 2015, Travis Perkins and Benchmarx have raised over £4.2m for Macmillan.

Protect Monitor Control

Schneider Electric has announced the launch of a new partner program in the UK and Ireland.

The Contractor Program offers online resources and digital tools via the mySchneider portal to help contractors quickly and efficiently meet customer demands. It also offers opportunities to generate more business and training to support sales activities, as well as advice on sustainable solutions.

In addition to the above, it includes the following benefits depending on whether the contractor is a registered, premier or premier plus customer:

• Personalised news, information and promotions

• Advanced commercial and technical support

• Digital platforms and tools

• Training and education resources

• Invitations to local partner events

• Partner locator listing

• EcoXpert badge eligibility

• Hands-on training

The launch is part of Schneider Electric’s strategy to mitigate the energy crisis by calling on its customers, partners and suppliers to reduce the amount of energy used in their day-to-day operations and buildings, and to select more sustainable solutions.

David Williams, Vice President of Transactional Business at Schneider Electric, says, “As a global business, we understand the challenges our contractors and partners are facing around the world in light of the economic and political landscape and energy crisis. With the launch of the mySchneider Contractor Program, we are giving our partners priority access to our global partner ecosystem. We hope that by rewarding our contractors in this way that they will be empowered to stay ahead of the competition by offering the latest sustainable solutions to their customers.”

REPORT REVEALS HEAT PUMP SALES IN UK AND FRANCE

A new report has revealed that France is cutting carbon from heating buildings 10 times faster than the UK by deploying more than 10 times the number of heat pumps.

Last year, France sold 621,000 heat pumps, saving 15.6MT of CO2 emissions, while the UK sold just 55,000 heat pumps, saving 1.5MT of CO2 emissions, and had the lowest installation rate of 21 European countries.

The UK government has set a target of installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028, meaning they must achieve a tenfold increase in deployment within five years to catch up with where France is at right now.

0800 030 6838 hello@serverroomenvironments.co.uk

The report by MCS Charitable Foundation assesses why the UK is lagging behind targets and sets out lessons the government must learn from France if it is to meet climate change goals.

It highlights how the French government seized opportunities when there was disruption in global energy markets to refocus attention away from gas and oil onto electrifying heat. In addition, France has had energy efficiency standards for new build homes for more than a decade.

By contrast, in the UK in 2019, after years of stop-start policies and inadequate funding, delays in regulations for new homes and insufficient consumer information, there were only 2,000 jobs supported by the heat pump industry and only a tenth of the number of heat pump installations seen in France.

The UK is now beginning to scale up heat pump deployment, seeing a 40% increase in the heat pump market in 2022 since the energy crisis began. But rather than a gradual rise in heat pump numbers, as France has achieved over 15 years, the UK government must now initiate an exponential increase in the heat pump market.

FINANCIAL CLIMATE AFFECTS TRADESPEOPLE’S EXPENDITURE

Tradespeople are spending over £1,000 on tools each year on average, but the cost-of-living crisis is dramatically changing their buying habits, according to new research.

The study conducted by ElectricalDirect asked tradespeople about their outgoings on tools, maintenance and repairs, and found that the average total is £1,110 a year.

However, this figure should be even higher, as almost a fifth of workers (19%) say they need to purchase new tools but can’t afford to do so because of the current financial climate.

The amount spent on such costs varies significantly by trade. Caretakers and maintenance workers spend the most (£1,753 per year), followed by electricians (£1,546) and plasterers (£1,502).

Almost a quarter of these costs (22%) are spent on maintenance and repairs (£246), but the research suggests that an increasing number of tradespeople are tackling these jobs themselves to reduce outgoings.

Compared to before the cost-of-living crisis, around one in six (16%) are now more likely to repair their own tools, rather than paying to get them fixed.

Furthermore, more than a quarter of tradespeople (27%) now keep their tools for longer to avoid paying for new ones, and one in seven (13%) even continue using damaged tools because they can’t afford replacements.

Other cost cutting measures include reducing usage of power tools to lower fuel costs (30%) and buying second hand equipment instead of new (42%). ElectricalDirect, electricaldirect.co.uk

SKILLELECTRIC 2023 UK FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The eight SkillELECTRIC competitors who scored most highly across the recent national qualifying heats have been named as this year’s UK finalists. They are:

• Ben Gillin – Lloyd Morris Electrical/JTL Training

• Conor McDonnell – Nesbitt Electrical/Southern Regional College

• Danny McBean – Grants of Dufftown/SECTT

• Demi Mae Whitehead – William Davis Homes/JTL Training

• Jason Robinson – Neil Whicker Electrical Services/College of West Anglia

• Thomas Magee – Belfast Met College/SM Electrical

• Thomas Turner – Parker Technical Services/JTL Training

All will now take part in the UK Grand Final being held at Oldham College across the week of 13 November.

To be crowned champion, competitors will have to excel in a complicated two-day practical installation task set to a strict timescale and against a rigorous marking criteria. In a first for this year, the event will also include a solar PV-related task to reflect that the core competence of a qualified electrician is the foundation from which to upskill and train in solar installation.

“We are very proud to continue to play a key role in the SkillELECTRIC competition,” says Jake Green, Head of Technical Engagement at Scolmore Group. “It takes a lot of confidence from the contestants to put themselves forward for the competition, so I commend them. It is this confidence and determination that we need to see in the electricians of the future. The skillset we have amongst this year’s finalists is brilliant, I am looking forward to seeing what they can all demonstrate at the final in November.”

JIB ANNOUNCES A NEW WAGE AGREEMENT

The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and Unite the Union have agreed on a new two-year wage deal from January 2024, for the electrical contracting industry under the JIB collective agreement. Some of the key changes to be implemented include:

First year (from 2024)

• 7% increase to rates

• £20 increase to weekly sick pay for all grades during weeks 3 to 24, therefore providing,

• £210 p/w for a technician

• £200 p/w for an approved electrician

• £190 p/w for an electrician

• £180 p/w for others as defined in clause 1.3 note(a) in section 9 of the JIB Handbook

• £10 increase to weekly sick pay for all grades (as above) during weeks 25 to 52

Second year (from 2025)

• 5% increase to rates

• £10,000 increase to death in service benefit, therefore up from £30,000 to £40,000

• A ‘recoupment’ arrangement for sick pay – an arrangement to reimburse the second week of absence after an employee has been off sick for eight weeks

• 50p-£2 responsibility money, increased from 10p-£1

ECA Chief Negotiator, Andrew Hutchins, says, “I am pleased with the outcome of the negotiations. The last few years have been difficult, and it is beneficial to have some certainty at a time when the wider economy is unpredictable. This agreement gives us an opportunity to work with Unite on longer term ambitions to update and modernise the industry to improve skills for a low carbon economy.”

LEAKY HOMES REVEALED BY ENERGY CHAMPIONS

‘Lights, camera, action!’ took on a new meaning when specially trained ‘energy champions’ helped nearly 200 Surrey residents spot where energy was leaking from their homes and take steps to save money.

Thanks to funding from UK Power Networks , the Leaky Homes project, run by Zero Carbon Guildford and Energy Action Redhill & Reigate, was able to buy several infrared cameras and train 36 Surrey residents to carry out home energy surveys during the cost-of-living crisis.

The thermal imaging cameras revealed where residents could make significant energy efficiency improvements. They were then sent a written report with helpful recommendations and vital signposting to the financial support they needed to make their homes more energy efficient.

Ben McCallan from Zero Carbon Guildford, says, “We were thrilled to receive the funding from UK Power Networks that allowed our volunteers to get trained up and start conducting valuable energy audits, especially given the struggle so many of us were facing with bills with winter energy costs after the price cap rise.”

Ben adds that the project was so successful that they now plan to boost it in September by purchasing more cameras and training community groups in all Surrey’s districts and boroughs. The new programme will also include a summer component, so that they can deliver energy advice all year round.

LOGIC4TRAINING LAUNCHES A NEW COURSE

Logic4training has launched a new course, covering the added extras that will ensure plumbing, heating and domestic electrical installers complete works to a high standard, leaving customers’ homes in a tidy and ‘finished’ state.

The five day Basic Site Skills course is ideal for small businesses who want to bring an apprentice or trainee up to speed on common tasks, and experienced plumbers, heating engineers or domestic electrical installers looking to provide a more complete customer service. The course delivers practical site-based skills that enable tradespeople to complete all aspects of a job to a high quality standard, including the finishing touches such as tiling, plastering and carpentry. Available as an add on to its new entrants’ courses for plumbing and heating engineers, the course can also be taken by candidates already working in building services trades.

HAGERGANG GOES ON TOUR

Over the past 30 years, Hager has built a strong community of over 20,000 installers and contractors across the UK. This tour will allow the team to meet the HagerGang and offer customers the chance to bag themselves a range of #HagerGang merchandise.

Until 6 September, the HagerGang is going on tour in a fully branded truck. The merch store will be visiting 40 different wholesalers in 40 different locations. Hager is inviting electricians, installers and contractors from across those regions and beyond to come along.

In exchange for any Hager products purchased in store, customers will qualify for free HagerGang merchandise, including t-shirts, hoodies, water bottles and its famous blue screwdrivers.

Hager says, “Our customers are absolutely integral to our business. We’re fully committed to providing the best possible service to them and seeing how we can evolve and enhance our product offering to better fulfil their needs. The HagerGang tour is a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with our customers face to face and develop our already well-established community relationships.”

• Building regulations (altering, drilling and notching structural areas)

• Safe use of hand and power tools

• Basic wall fixing methods and materials

• Basic carpentry (lifting floorboards, creating access hatches in floors and ceilings, drilling and notching timber joists)

• Chasing solid brick and block walls for pipes and cables

• Plasterboard wall repair and access

• Ceramic tile repair, cutting around electrical sockets and switches Logic4training, logic4training.co.uk

HE SIMM GROUP TO DELIVER £16M COMMERCIAL MEP AT KING STREET FOR VINCI

The Northern Engineering Division of HE Simm Group has won a £16m contract to deliver a commercial project as part of the new regional hub in Blackpool that VINCI is constructing as part of Muse and Blackpool Council’s £350m Talbot Gateway Regeneration Scheme.

The contract, which will see the firm deliver a full MEP installation, over a 37-week programme, was awarded to the company following its ongoing, successful delivery, at VINCI’s New Victoria scheme for end client, Muse Developments.

Starting onsite in November, and running through to September 2024, the company will also utilise its internal offsite manufacturing team to provide a modularised roof top plant room amongst other modular items, including risers – to the value of three quarters of a million pounds.

Greg Simm, Managing Director for HE Simm Engineering in the North, comments, “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract, especially as it comes off the back of the work we are currently undertaking at New Victoria.

“It will be the largest commercial scheme delivered by the Northern Engineering Division and we are looking forward to getting going in November.”

Gareth Simm, Chief Executive Officer at the company, adds, “This contract award plays well into our continued diversification strategy, which sees more and more of our work completed in sectors including commercial, industrial and healthcare, whilst also staying true to our roots of delivering the very best MEP in the UK residential sector.”

WHERE LIGHTING MEETS ESG REQUIREMENTS

Social Security Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government, has recently taken over the whole of a high-profile Glasgow office building as a base for 750 new staff. Zumtobel and its sister brand Thorn have worked with Social Security Scotland, Mpact and Mitie on the lighting retrofit project, which will help the organisation save on its energy costs, provide comfortable lighting for its staff, and reduce its carbon footprint – meeting its ESG requirements.

The agency recently moved into a high-profile office building in Glasgow city centre. With sustainability and ESG requirements to meet, Social Security Scotland decided to upgrade the fluorescent lighting at its new base. The objectives included reducing energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions, providing a comfortable working environment for staff, improving neurodiversity with LED lighting, and maintaining the architectural integrity of the building.

To validate the potential savings from switching to LED, the Zumtobel team conducted an energy audit and lighting design for all the new fittings. Preliminary calculations estimated that energy consumption would drop from over 450,000KWH to 175,000KWH – the results were convincing.

The scheme comprised Zumtobel MIREL recessed luminaires and PANOS downlights for the offices and ONDARIA and SLOTLIGHT in the breakout areas. RESCLITE and PURESIGN fulfil the emergency lighting requirements.

Thorn Aquaforce waterproof luminaires are used in the basement and

FIRST EARTH CABLING BEGINS ON HINKLEY POINT C

The site team working on Hinkley Point C (HPC) has recently taken a big step forward, with the first permanent earthing cable arriving on site and being installed. These cables are the start of a vast network of cabling which will form the earthing for the entire power station. HPC, being French designed, has a very different earthing process, however, that doesn’t stop the fact that there is still in the region of 200km of similar cabling to be installed within the plant’s two units.

This supports one of the project’s major milestones on the mission to commission – the energisation of the auxiliary transformer from the 400kV National Grid, which will mark the first step to bringing a permanent power supply onto the site. The connection to the National Grid will allow NG Bailey to energise its distribution boards, enabling electrical infrastructure across the site to be commissioned.

NG Bailey is also progressing with the installation of the next high voltage switchboards, which form part of the electrical distribution network required to achieve the milestones as part of HPC’s overarching mission to commission targets.

NG Bailey, ngbailey.com

car park, Katona wall luminaires in the stairwells, and Chalice and IQ Wave in the offices complete the design.

The upgrade from fluorescent lighting to the all-new LED scheme has reduced energy consumption by 61%. Over 60% savings in carbon emissions are also impressive, with the new lighting emitting

54 tons less than the original installation. Furthermore, having fully functional lighting controls increased the efficiency of the scheme, and the emergency lighting has also been completely updated in line with the latest regulations.

NEW DOMESTIC ELECTRICIAN EWA NOW AVAILABLE

Domestic electricians who need to formally recognise their skills and experience will now have a dedicated Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route available to them.

The domestic electrician EWA is based on the same content as the domestic electrician apprenticeship standard, so both new entrants and existing workers are assessed and accredited to the same industry standard.

To be eligible for the assessment, candidates need to be currently working as a domestic electrician with over three years’ experience. They must also hold at least a Level 2 electrical technical qualification listed in the EWA ‘skills scan’, a document that has to be completed during the application process, for training providers to verify if the candidate has the relevant skills and knowledge to successfully complete the process.

Once enrolled, learners will have to achieve the Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Qualification, which comprises of five practical performance units, plus the BS 7671:2018 and full inspection and testing qualification. A key benefit of the EWA is that existing qualifications can count towards the assessment and do not need to be repeated.

After the qualification is gained, learners must undertake the AM2ED assessment, which mirrors the AM2D end point assessment taken by domestic electrician apprentices at the end of their training.

The assessment follows the footsteps of the EWA for installation and maintenance electricians that was launched in 2020. Both were developed by an industry group comprising The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), Certsure, ECA, ECS, NAPIT, City & Guilds, EAL, the IET and Unite.

It will be recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to the domestic electrician apprenticeship. Achievement of the qualification, along with the AM2ED assessment, meets the qualification criteria for an ECS Domestic Electrician gold card application.

The EWA is available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from accredited EAL training centres and from City & Guilds centres later in the year.

DC OR NOT DC, THAT IS THE QUESTION

The number one issue being discussed around the world in terms of electrification is ‘how are we going to generate enough electricity to meet the ever-growing demand?’

Of course, microgrids and renewables figure highly in these discussions, but the stark reality is that the world has really only got two options to consider, with either of them representing a challenge of frightening proportions.

Our existing AC-based infrastructure of electrification is technology that was essentially developed well over 50 years ago. Even in the fast-moving 21st century, the world is still working with mechanical switches that are enhanced by electronics. There are transformers, power lines and safety circuits, but the bottom line is that hardly anything in the infrastructure has changed for a considerable amount of time. This is simply unsustainable moving forward.

More and thicker cables

If we stick with using existing technology, one option that would enable the world to generate and distribute more electricity would be to put more and thicker cables into the ground and add more transformers

to the landscape. However, that’s going to be a huge challenge in our current system because the world simply does not have sufficient amounts of cabling, it doesn’t have the manpower and it doesn’t have the space. At the same time, the efficiency of doing this would not be particularly high.

The second option is to step back from AC and use DC directly throughout factories and in domestic environments, which presents an equally staggering proposition – in other words, DC grids (especially small-scale or sub-distribution) will become more common in the future. AC will never fully disappear because there will always be scenarios where it is required, but experts are already gathering in committees to discuss what previously might have been considered unthinkable. As an example, the Current/OS Foundation is dedicating itself to developing an open standard system for DC distribution that will improve resilience, sustainability and safety.

It is an undeniable fact that the concept of switching most of the world’s consumed electricity to DC is gathering pace rapidly, even though the costs and logistics involved are literally unfathomable. On the plus side, there will no longer be any need to convert from DC to AC and back again, a process which always results in a considerable loss of power while delivering far from optimal efficiency.

One of the biggest issues that the electrical sector will have to face in any switch to DC is safety – what kind of safety measures would be needed and what kind of switch gear and power electronics would be required around that?

Essentially, all switch gear would have to change to realise a mainly DC-powered world. Indeed, virtually everything in the existing installed base would have to change – except for the cables, which could stay, as long as the right choices on DC voltage levels are made.

Less disturbance

The positive outlook is that most household electrical appliances have power supplies built in which rectify the AC and create DC. This means that if the electricity coming in was already DC, the front end of all those power supplies would no longer be required, leading to a more efficient power supply with less disturbance.

From a technical point of view, DC is certainly a sensible idea, even if the impact of making the change would be huge. The infrastructure is simply currently not there and installers don’t have the knowledge or experience required in setting up a DC circuit. Indeed, the people that the world would need to make this change happen don’t exist yet. That’s why making the switch could take up to 20 years, giving schools, colleges and further education institutions notice that they need to be looking now at how to help people manage the skills and transfer knowledge that will be required in a DC-dominated world.

From an electrification standpoint, the switch is certainly going to happen because the benefits are undeniable – a DC-based infrastructure will deliver fewer disturbances, lower losses and result in greater efficiency in the distribution of electrical power.

While change will inevitably have to come, AC/DC systems will co-exist way past our children’s lifetime, because they both have a reason to be. For the first five or 10 years, most changes will take place on a small scale, such as on an industrial compound or even small domestic communities sharing renewable (e.g. photovoltaic) power. Stepping away from AC is only likely to happen on a large scale in 20 to 30 years’ time when the market fully matures and becomes viable. By then, all test and measurement equipment from companies, such as Fluke, will need to have changed dramatically as well, and the electrified future will require a dynamic response from all the links in the supply chain.

GREATER MANCHESTER’S BIGGEST ULTRA-RAPID EV HUB TO CHARGE 400 CARS A DAY

Sixteen ultra-rapid charger bays will go live at the 152-acre parkland and lake in August, making it the largest ultra-rapid charging hub in Greater Manchester. It’s the latest project in Be.EV’s wider collaboration with Trafford Borough Council, which has already seen more than 41 chargers go live across the region.

The ultra-rapid chargers mean drivers will be able to charge their cars from 20% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes. The site will be equipped with Kempower chargers that feature unique load balancing abilities. Kempower chargers can intelligently distribute energy supply between vehicles according to capacity and demand, meaning if one car reaches the maximum amount of power on one charger, any residual energy supply can be reassigned to another vehicle connected onsite.

Visitors to the Sale Water Sports Centre will benefit from the installation, with kayakers, swimmers, dog walkers and sailors able to charge their vehicle whilst out on the water or grabbing a bite

to eat at the Treetops Café or Boathouse Grill restaurant.

Located two minutes from the M60, Trafford residents and commuters will also be able to access the site around the clock, with the site able to charge over 380 cars on any given day.

With 1.2MW of power being delivered across 16 charging bays, the project is a major step forward for Trafford Borough Council in its mission to enable more of the public to join the EV movement.

Be.EV’s public charging network is the largest across the North West with a rapidly expanding national footprint. The network boasts an impressive operational availability rate of 99.6%.

The council will retain ownership of the site and the chargers will be owned, installed and maintained by Be.EV.

Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV, says, “We’re delighted to be bringing Kempower’s innovative chargers to Sale Water Park. The unique technology will make it easier than ever for visitors looking to charge their cars whilst out on the water, enjoying the scenery, or simply taking a break from travelling on the motorway.

“The site is also a testament to Trafford Council’s ambition to have a real impact on Greater Manchester and take the necessary steps towards a net zero future. We are proud to be at the forefront of the EV transition alongside them. They are exemplary partners in the creation of a reliable and sustainable transport network. We look forward to continuing our partnership.”

Cllr Aidan Williams, Executive Member for Climate Change at Trafford Council, says, “Becoming home to the largest ultra-rapid charging point in Greater Manchester shows how serious Trafford is about electric travel. Ensuring the charging infrastructure is in place is a key component in making electric vehicle use a viable option for people in the borough.”

Be.EV is Transport for Greater Manchester’s preferred charging partner, and the Sale Water Park site is helping the charge network reach its ambitious target of getting each of Trafford’s 236,000 residents within 10 minutes of a charger.

THE WORLD IS CHANGING

CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector.

MR: I joined at 19 years of age when my father told me to get a job, as I was far too sociable to go to university to become a teacher. I went for three interviews and although CEF was the lowest paid, I could see there were very clear career opportunities and opted to jump into something I had never heard of previously –electrical wholesaling.

I progressed from Sales Assistant to Stores Manager and on to Branch Manager in my hometown of Daventry, before taking over Jersey where I was based for over four years. Then I progressed to Group Manager of South Wales and Jersey for the next 10 years.

I have been in my current role for seven years now, and I still look after Jersey.

CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that CEF does?

MR: CEF focuses on high levels of customer service built around great supplier and customer relationships with a vision of becoming the UK’s leading multi-channel distributor. We look at the delivering the best customer solutions with a focus on ensuring growth is delivered in a sustainable way.

CW: Tell us about your current role – what are you responsible for and what does a normal working day consist of?

MR: My day is always varied. With 75 in the National Accounts and Projects team and lots of customer relationships, the day always throws up interesting challenges and conversations.

I believe in giving good people a platform to flourish by offering support and providing the tools and strategy so they can go and develop their areas of responsibility and grow both personally and financially. Most of my time is spent mentoring or engaging with the team and our key customers and suppliers to build even better relationships. Irrespective of whether I am talking to the team, our customers or suppliers, relationships are critical.

CW: What are the best things about your role? What are the most challenging?

MR: The best part of my role is seeing people develop and grow and have successful careers of their own. I believe the true mark of a good leader is building strong foundations with the people you employ.

Most challenging? I think as long as you are open minded, empathetic and emotionally intelligent, most issues can be handled in a calm and respectful manner.

To attract and retain people, we need to be aware that the world is changing, and we need to move with it or ideally lead the way by embracing change where we can.

CW: How has COVID-19 affected the industry? What are the positives to come from the pandemic?

MR: It has definitely changed people’s expectations around work-life balance. Salary isn’t everything – people want to spend more time with family, so to attract the best people we have to get the correct balance between staff wellbeing and making sure service levels remain high.

From a CEF perspective, COVID-19 has accelerated the use of cef.co.uk, where next day delivery or click and collect from the local branch played a major part in our service offering, and our online sales continue to grow.

CW: Aside from COVID-19, what have been the biggest changes across the industry in recent times? What will be the biggest changes in the future?

MR: Sustainability and everything associated with it – staff wellbeing, carbon footprint, how we source materials and supply them, what are we adding to our local communities, who we employ is something the whole industry needs to get to grips with, and I am pleased to see the CEF strategy evolving.

As an industry we have very few women, ethnic minorities and LGTBQ+ people in our sector and we must find a way to make our industry more welcoming.

CW: What’s next for you and for CEF?

MR: For CEF, we want to continue to keep improving, modernising and growing and to lead the way on sustainability. This is also true for our National Accounts and Projects team, where our new Customer Fulfilment Centres will enable us to better service the large projects we are winning.

Personally, I am focussed on continuing to improve our team, to provide people with a platform to be successful, be happy in their work and personal life, and feel part of something special.

CW: Do you have any career advice for anyone starting out in the industry?

MR: Work hard, use common sense, have a positive attitude and always treat people the way you want to be treated yourself. Then there is no reason you can’t have a great career in our sector.

CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market?

MR: There is no denying that the renewables sector offers the most exciting opportunity for sales growth, which is why we have our own dedicated team and large stock holding to service this area of the market.

CW: What are your interests away from work?

MR: Away from work, life revolves around spending time with my fiancé and our combined rabble of six children. I am a massive Manchester United and England fan and watching football has always been a big part of my life. Music is my other big passion, so gigs and festivals, good food and drink, travel…basically enjoying myself as much as I can!

PRODUCT CHOICE AND QUALITY HELPS CREATE FIT AND FORGET INSTALLATIONS

Agood contractor knows that planning ahead will ensure the end result is aesthetically pleasing and well ordered.

Everyone wants a job they can be proud of, and it is imperative that when the site is handed over (to the main contractor or end client) that everyone using the area is kept safe too.

Both an ordered and safe installation can easily be achieved through incorporating cable management products – and selecting suitable products from the get-go is essential to ensure the project goes ahead quickly and smoothly.

Niglon knows that being able to choose from a wide range of products makes life easier and that’s why the company holds up to nearly 1,000 different cable management items in stock for immediate despatch.

The extensive range includes:

• Malleable conduit boxes and fittings

• Bracketry

• Cable glands

• Flexible conduit

• Adaptable boxes

• Resin cable joints

Cable management is just one of the product categories covered by Niglon.

Customers are able to choose from 4,500 in all, including: wiring accessories, industrial accessories, circuit protection devices, tools and fixtures, control and automation, and general lighting products.

Scan the QR code to see more of Niglon’s offering:

Malleable conduit boxes and fittings

It might not be the first product which comes to mind when people think of Niglon, but they’re actually still one of the company’s top selling products. Incredibly, Niglon has been supplying conduit fittings to the trade for more than 50 years.

The company now distributes this range exclusively under the SIMPLEX brand, a well regarded name from yesteryear which many will be familiar with, and which confirms the firm’s pedigree in this area.

While many things have changed in the industry over the decades, tried and tested products which do a reliable job tend to stick around, remaining loved and well-used by each new generation of installers.

As a supplier, NIglon is constantly looking at how it can evolve to meet the

needs of the contractors using its products on their installations.

With these products it’s about quality, breadth of available product and stock depth – from the bog standard to the weird and wonderful. Need a ¾” male to 20mm female adaptor, or a 20mm Bonding Nipple? Or perhaps you have a call for several thousand 25mm terminal boxes and have been let down by your normal supplier?

When it comes to conduit boxes and fittings, Niglon has everything you’ll need covered – and the great news is, with more than 1,500 electrical wholesalers stocking Niglon throughout the UK, you’re never too far from a stockist. This network is also backed up by the company’s extensive stock holding at its centrally located distribution centre in the West Midlands.

Cable glands

Cable Glands are one of those products that electricians are fussy about – and rightly so.

If you are currently or indeed have ever worked ‘on the tools’, you will appreciate exactly why this is. Terminating cable into a gland where the olive is too large say, or where the gland lacks sufficient thread and strips whilst you are working on it is no fun!

Nobody wants to be finishing off their installation and terminating their cables with product which is poor quality. All that effort and work to end a good job badly – it doesn’t bear thinking about.

The hassle created by using lesser quality glands is a complete false economy – why save a few pennies on buying a gland which can in turn sap billing time from the day’s work? Frankly, the installer does not have time free to fritter away like this, so its always best to buy once and buy right by getting a quality termination product for your install.

From standard BW and CW options to LSF, CXT and flameproof products – available in sizes ranging from 20mm to 75mm –Niglon has it all when it comes to brass cable glands and gland packs and has worked hard with its supplier base over a long period of time (decades in several instances) to ensure a reliable and consistent product can be provided time, after time, after time.

Flexible conduits

Niglon has you covered when it comes to flexible conduits, with a comprehensive range of options from 12mm to 50mm in diameter. The company’s competitively priced contractor packs come complete with glands and are fantastic for many standard applications.

However, Niglon knows that more demanding installations will require different conduits, and that’s why it also offers galvanised steel, liquid resistant, and liquid tight variants too.

Adaptable boxes and channel bracketry

Being simpler products, product quality should be more of a given here, in Niglon’s view.

Experience tells that it is about making sure that the company has a continuous and ready supply of product to service the customer. Variety on these ranges is vast and it can be an area of very erratic demand driven often by large projects, so it is important to hold good stock depths.

Director Oliver Hinley comments, “These products have been flying off the

shelves, especially in the past 12 months – we’ve seen a 60% growth in sales in this area. Niglon’s excellent service levels and pricing structure demonstrates significant growth is possible even in a very crowded product category such as this. It’s simply good product, distributed well.”

Resin cable joints

Resin cable joints are an essential for contractors who are repairing or offering additional protection to cables – or for those needing to extend a power cable using an existing length with a new one. Many installers keep resin cable joints as part of their regular kit to ensure they’ve got some on hand whenever needed. That’s why Niglon offers kits which can joint cables as small as 1.5mm2 and as large as 300mm2 And of course, because Niglon is committed to ensuring safety at all times, its kits are approved to BS EN 50393:2006-11 –safe and handy, what’s not to like?

Why choose Niglon?

Niglon says it knows a good product speaks volumes when it comes to choosing which supplier to opt for – but it also believes that its job is much more than that. As a fourth-generation family owned and run firm, Niglon has retained the personal customer service that stood it in good stead when the business first launched. Nearly 80 years later, its product ranges may have expanded almost beyond the imagination of its founder, but the high-quality service he demanded from his first members of staff has remained the core of the Niglon ethos.

Niglon says it is not a product expert on everything, but many of the products it sells have been developed and improved under the company’s careful guidance. And given the length of time which Niglon has served the industry for, you may well have used a Niglon product without realising!

While the company is a fan of traditional good customer service, it is a truly modern company – with a purpose-built headquarters situated in the heart of England to match. Niglon was one of the first in the industry to adopt revolutionary stock fulfilment processes; has invested heavily and retained a continual focus on research and development; and prides itself on its long-standing commitment to independent third-party certification, to ensure all products are rigorously tested.

Niglon is also more than happy to talk you through its extensive ranges – whether you’re after cable management or products from any of the other supply categories the company specialises in.

UNICRIMP PROVIDES CABLING SOLUTION FOR SCOLMORE GROUP WAREHOUSE EXPANSION

Having expanded its warehouse capacity to meet the growing demand for its extensive range of products, Scolmore was able to look to group company, Unicrimp, for the required cabling solutions for its vast 252,000ft2 facility.

The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations 2019 (BS7671) came into force on 1 January 2019 and contained significant changes that relate directly to fire safety and the performance of installations should a fire occur. All cables throughout an installation (not just in escape routes) are to be secured with fire resistant cable supports and fixings, for example, fully metallic cable clips, ties, and fixings, including within plastic cable management systems.

With a total of 18 distribution boards required to cover the electrical supply across the huge warehouse facility, a vast number of products from Unicrimp’s regulation-compliant Q-Fire range have been installed as part of the cable management solution.

As well as securing the expanse of cabling accommodated on the ground floor space, a new mezzanine level has been created to accommodate significantly more storage space. In addition, a new charging point facility for the company’s fleet of electric forklift trucks has been installed.

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations stipulate that cable support systems must be constructed with materials that will withstand premature collapse caused by direct exposure to heat. There are no applications excluded – trunking, conduit and cabling, fixed to surfaces of the building or attached to cable support systems must all have fire-resistant supports in place.

All products within Unicrimp’s Q-Fire range meet BS 7671 requirements and are designed to prevent cables from premature collapse during a fire, and in doing so, keep emergency services and the public safe. The Q-Fire range currently comprises fire-safe twin and earth cable clips, saddle clips and P clips, stainless steel mounts, metal cable cleats, all-round banding and masonry screws.

The comprehensive range provides installers with an expanded choice of fixing solutions, suitable across a range of applications and environments, helping them to satisfy the latest wiring regulations.

Products used to secure the cables throughout the warehouse facility include fire-safe metal cable clips, cable ties, saddle space bars, glands, all-round banding, stainless steel mounts, metal cable cleats and connectors. Cable ties have been used in cable containment; the glands in the distribution boards and rotary isolator switches; the cable cleats have been used to secure armoured cable to walls; and the metal saddles have been used to mount metal conduit to the walls for cable containment.

Last year, the company extended its Q-Fire range to incorporate 18th Edition compliant fire-rated metal twin and earth cable clips in red and white options.

These fire-rated T&E cable clips are manufactured from zinc plated carbon steel and are available in two sizes – 1-2.5mm and 4-6mm – and in a choice of uncoated or with a grey PPA LSF coating. The LSF coating provides long term protection for metal clips, as well as added protection for the cable during and after installation.

The company also added 2mm and 25mm white metal saddle bar spacers to its Q-Fire range last year. They are the perfect solution for providing support and spacing between conduits and mounting surface and their use will help installers to comply with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

Every effort should be made to use cable products of the highest quality to ensure that risks are minimised. All Unicrimp products are manufactured under stringent quality control systems and are fully compliant with the very latest industry regulations.

AVOIDING CORROSION — IT’S A MATERIAL CHOICE

When specifying a cable management system, you need to understand the environment in which your customer will install it and advise them about the best material choice. In this article, Paul Nolan, Projects Director for the Hudson Group, takes a closer look at the factors you should consider.

We have all seen cable management and containment systems that suffer the ravages of corrosion because someone selected the wrong material. Equally, there is little point in choosing an unnecessarily expensive material if the system is for an office or similar benign environment.

The system needs to provide a long-term solution and protect against corrosion, but your customer needs to balance this against cost and not over specify a material if it’s not needed.

The first step is to understand where they will install it. Thankfully, at this point we can refer to EN ISO 12944-2, which provides classifications for corrosion and examples of where you may find them – see table.

Looking at the table, let’s run though what materials you might suggest.

Where you have very low corrosivity or C1, you should recommend either electro zinc plated or pre-galvanised steel. This would typically be for an indoor environment, such as in an office, school, hotel or shop.

One subject that you might hear about is zinc whiskers. These form on the underside of galvanised products or electroplated metals. These thin whiskers can eventually grow up to 1cm in length, break off and become a problem to electronics.

Also, hot dipped galvanised products will have a standard coating of 45 to 65 microns after being dipped in a bath of molten zinc. This is the average coating; the product is not evenly coated along its length. Deep galvanised products use a different steel which allows it to apply a thicker zinc coating for extra protection, but the process is more expensive.

• EXAMPLE INDOOR: Areas with high air humidity and high

Raising the stakes slightly higher, a low to moderate C2 corrosive environment might be found in industrial premises, sports halls, warehouses or partially outdoor applications. Hudson Group would suggest a pre-galvanised steel cable management system.

For C3, where there is moderate environmental corrosivity, think outdoors or in a light industrial area, then you need to go beyond a pre-galvanised solution. For these applications, think about hot dip galvanised, CPC (Clear Plastic Coated) coated or powder-coated steel or PVC systems.

HALLS / WAREHOUSES

• EXAMPLE OUTDOOR: Environments with low levels of atmospheric pollution e.g

RURAL AREAS

• EXAMPLE INDOOR: Areas with moderate air humidity and some atmospheric pollution from production processes e.g.

BREWERIES / DAIRIES / LAUNDRIES

• EXAMPLE OUTDOOR: Environments with low salinity or moderate atmospheric pollution e.g.

URBAN AREAS / LIGHT INDUSTRIAL / SOME COASTAL INFLUENCE

And when your customer faces a highly corrosive environment, or C4, then they should use hot dip galvanised or powder coated steel, 304L stainless steel, PVC or GRP systems.

For very highly corrosive environments, such as chemical or water treatment plants, heavy industry, swimming pools or perhaps dockyards, then they will need a material that will stand the test of time. For this C5-I classification, you should suggest 304L or 316L stainless steel, deep galvanised steel or GRP.

And finally, there is a special classification for marine environments (C5-M), which are notoriously corrosive. Here your customer will need a 316L stainless steel or a GRP system.

Even with the above suggestions, there are still some things that you should be aware of.

And Paul says that if a manufacturer tells you that they double dip their products, then ignore them. A steel will reach its maximum zinc absorption after one coating, a second coating will make no difference.

Remember that materials science does not stand still; someone will develop a better solution. One example is a new finish called Magnelis. This magnesium zinc alloy finish provides better corrosion resistance than galvanised options, is self-healing for cut edge protection and it is more cost effective.

Aluminium is not new, but it provides a lightweight, strong option for some applications, however, it can be hard to perforate and add fixing slots to.

For really extreme environments, GRP, or glass reinforced polymer, is the go-to material. Even here you need to be aware of different characteristics, as the mechanical properties of this material can vary. Delving deeper, there are four main resin types of GRP cable management products which will suit different specific atmospheric environments.

It pays to know the basics about different materials and when you should suggest using them, but always remember that you can always phone the manufacturer to ask for their advice, especially if they offer a wide range of different materials.

This article is based on a CPD seminar run by the Hudson Group called ‘Selecting the Correct Environmental Material’.

TRANSFORMING ELECTRIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Designing away the potential for error and speeding up installation time is what the next generation of electric underfloor heating cables should achieve. Alistair Bell, Managing Director at ThermoSphere, explains how such a product can drastically transform installation to the benefit of customers, installers and merchants alike. This is vitally important as construction prices continue to rise.

The cost of labour and materials is contributing to the increase in renovation and construction prices, which are expected to rise by 17% in 2023. Installers, customers, and merchants cannot afford mistakes.

Revisiting finished jobs and reinstalling damaged heating cables costs time, and slow installations delay projects. Electric underfloor heating manufacturers can help by going back to the drawing board and redesigning their cables to remove the need for cutting membrane and insulation – speeding up installation times.

Sparking the next generation of electric underfloor heating cables

A common, if not the most common, point of failure in electric underfloor heating is the joint where the heating cable meets the ‘cold’ cable that connects to the thermostat. This is because these hot-to-cold cable ‘joints’ are big and bulky – often three times the size of the cables that they’re joining – so they have to be installed in a totally different way to thinner cables. To install a bulky hot-to-cold joint, installers must create cavities in the materials beneath the joints. They can do this by cutting into the membrane mat and insulation, creating a space for the joint to lay in, or by chasing out the wood or concrete sub floor if there’s no insulation being laid. Either way, tools are brought into the picture, increasing the risk of damage to the joints and cables. Grinders and Stanley blades can easily nick a joint, which can go unnoticed.

Once the installation is complete and the power switched on, the system will fail, and installers will have to troubleshoot and fix their work, sometimes returning to site much later to do so. The cavities can also create a problem that results in cable failure, months or years down the line. The air inside the cavities isn’t an efficient enough thermal conductor to dissipate the heat and stop the cables overheating and

failing. So, a small air gap can easily ruin a project long after it’s installed.

Without gouging out holes for the joints, no installer can get a flush finish ready for tiling. So, as things currently stand, cable installation involves a risky, but necessary evil.

A change in the way next-generation underfloor heating cables are manufactured can head off these problems. For example, the hot-to-cold joints are currently created during a secondary manufacturing process. First, the hot and cold cables are created by separate processes, then later those cables are crimped or soldered together and reinsulated with heat shrink. By creating the connection in the primary manufacturing process, they can be made in-line, and crucially, the same diameter as the underfloor heating cable.

Creating the hot/cold connection during the primary manufacturing process removes the risk of damage and gives installers the peace of mind that a job is truly complete. There is less likelihood of returning to repair or reinstall a project, ripping up tiles or flooring that will also have to be replaced. For both installers and merchants, using products that are virtually impossible to damage helps to enhance their reputation for providing quality installations or materials.

Power in installers’ and merchants’ hands

By changing the manufacturing process and redesigning their cables, underfloor heating companies can design away one of the biggest risks and costs for installers, merchants and customers. What’s more, they can also drastically transform the installation process to make it quicker and simpler, while also providing quality installations for customers.

A heating cable that has in-line connections can be manufactured to be uniform in thickness end-to-end, which allows the full length of the cable to be installed within the membrane in the

exact same manner. If the cable is an easy to install membrane heating cable that only requires installers to press the cable into the membrane mat, then the whole of the cable, including the hot/cold connection and cold tail can be pressed in, which removes the need for tools altogether. No-tool installation is quicker, less complex and less risky. Speeding up installation reduces the disruption to a customer’s home or time required on a construction site, enabling other phases of the project to progress quicker.

For larger projects, or for installers with many smaller projects, the improvements in installation speed allow them to lay more cable in less time. And, if heating cable companies offer a cable for every project size, then installers can avoid multi-cable installations.

As newer, innovative, next-generation cables transform electric underfloor heating, installers, merchants and customers will continue to benefit.

RETROFIT AND REFURBISH — EASY OPTIONS FOR CABLE PROTECTION

Alex Smith, Technical Director at Flexicon, identifies some of the areas to consider when specifying retrofit cable protection and how the right system can help speed up time on the job while protecting vulnerable or existing cabling.

When it comes to upgrading the electrical infrastructure of existing properties, retrofit cable protection options can help electrical contractors capitalise on a growing refurbishment market.

Reducing commercial carbon emissions

are increasingly specified – but all will require electrical cabling installations and infrastructure to be upgraded.

upgrade to energy-efficient solutions, such as solar panels and heat pumps. These drivers are all leading to increased demand for retrofit electrical wiring systems that will avoid major disruption to the building fabric or fixtures.

It is important to minimise the duration of installation programmes to avoid unnecessary delay and disruption, meaning many contractors are seeking new cable protection solutions that help reduce time on the job.

How to retrofit?

Most contractors are familiar with the complexity of traditional retrofit cable protection solutions, with the installation team required to pull existing cabling through the open end of a conduit system.

Conduit system manufacturers have been offering slit conduit options for some time, enabling installers to wrap insert the existing cabling to avoid disruption. However, it is important to ensure that the choice of flexible conduit system continues to offer the appropriate levels of protection for the environment and does not leave any areas of cabling or the installation exposed.

Divisible conduits, such as the new Flexicon FPADS range, allow existing cabling to be inserted laterally via a slit opening. This product consists of two open conduit profiles, which then interlock to form a protected IP40 system around the cables. It is also important to consider the cable routing. Traditional split conduit options can potentially expose cabling when bent or routed around corners, whereas the newer, divisible conduit options will maintain more mechanical strength and continuous protection of the cabling, irrespective of orientation or routing due to their interlocking design.

Termination and fittings

All cable protection should be specified as a complete end-to-end system, considering not only the flexible conduit used, but also the range of termination and fittings required.

To make it easier to terminate cabling in retrofit applications, Flexicon now offers its new Flexicon FPADS range, with a hinged fitting and locknut to wrap around existing cabling, meaning no disruption and easy and secure termination.

Protecting new cabling

As well as considering retrofit options, specifiers may also be tasked with installing new electrical cabling at the same time.

In this scenario, there is a broader range of options available, and specification should consider the range of external

hazards that the cabling may be exposed to – whether that is to meet a certain IP rating, enhanced fire performance properties, resistance to chemicals or UV exposure, to name a few.

Where fatigue life or impact resistance is important, installers should consider nylon polyamide (PA) corrugated flexible conduit, which can offer high impact strength and recovery if crushed, combined with excellent temperature performance.

Polypropylene and PVC conduit systems are available, however, both systems are inferior to nylon polyamide (PA) when it comes to fire performance, resistance to solvents and their abrasion resistance properties.

With no exposed metallic content, non-metallic conduits do not rust or corrode, thus maintaining performance and appearance over time. In addition, it is worth

considering labour and installation time. Non-metallic systems are often quicker to install than metallic options as they are easier and faster to cut. Non-metallic fittings will typically be one piece and simply push on and twist to secure.

For more complex application requirements, customers should speak to their supplier to discuss bespoke options.

These could include conduit supplied in non-standard or pre-cut lengths, in larger or smaller diameters or with different thread termination or fitting options. Additionally, more complex requirements, such as altering performance characteristics to meet a certain temperature requirement, compression strength or abrasion resistance, or to achieve a greater fatigue life may also be considered.

STEPPING INTO SAFETY

Navigating tight lofts, threading your way through building sites, working in the wet, the cold, the heat – as an electrical contractor, you’ve likely faced all these conditions and a lot more. So, having the right footwear for different conditions can make or break your day.

Electrical contractors face an array of hazards daily – sharp objects, slippery surfaces and the constant risk of electrical shocks.

That’s why prioritising safety features in your footwear is paramount. Boots or shoes must meet industry safety standards and there are different standards that indicate the level of protection they provide.

The basic standard is SB, which ensures that the footwear has toe protection capable of withstanding impacts of up to 200 joules. S1 will have this basic toe protection, anti-static protection, will be resistant to fuel oil and have energy absorption in the heel. If you work indoors and don’t expect to encounter wet conditions, S1 boots are a good choice. S2 offers the same protection but will also prevent water penetration and absorption of the uppers, making S2 good for working outside in wet conditions.

S3 boots also offer midsole penetration resistance, ensuring protection against sharp objects. These boots are ideal for working in outdoor environments with wet conditions where there is a risk of encountering hazards that could pierce the sole. S3L safety boots, meanwhile, have an enhanced level of water resistance, superior slip resistance, and an upgraded level of protection and performance. They are an excellent choice for individuals working in more challenging industrial settings.

All safety boots should have a reinforced toe. Steel toe boots offer great protection, but they can be heavy and less breathable than composite toe boots, which include plastic and fibreglass. These also offer good protection against weight and impacts but are lighter in weight than steel and don’t conduct heat, cold or electricity, meaning they are ideal if you work around sources of electricity and fire or in extreme weather conditions.

Comfort is key when you’re on your feet for long hours. Footwear with cushioning and shock-absorbing features like plush insoles and midsoles will support your feet, while supportive arches will keep your feet properly aligned, combating fatigue and ensuring that you’re at your best throughout the day.

Breathability is important too. Shoes and boots with moisture-wicking linings keep your feet dry and comfortable no matter the workload, and you can even get footwear that has antibacterial and thermoregulating footbeds to keep your feet fresh and hygienic. Check what materials the boots or shoes incorporate:

Rugged Flex, for instance, is tough and strong but also provides extra stretch where you need it most to help you move with ease. If, at the end of the day, you don’t want the faff of removing laces, choose boots with zips or ones that simply pull on.

Material is also crucial. Leather takes centre stage, thanks to its durability, flexibility and breathability. Leather can withstand rigorous use and resist wear and tear. It is naturally resistant to abrasions, punctures and cuts, offering a barrier against sharp objects and potential workplace hazards. With its natural breathability, allowing air to circulate within the boots, leather helps to keep the feet cool, dry and comfortable, reducing the likelihood of excessive sweating, odours and foot conditions. It provides warmth in colder climates and can also help keep the feet cooler in hot environments by allowing heat to escape. When properly treated with waterproofing agents or conditioners, leather can provide a decent level of water resistance, protecting the feet from moisture and wet conditions. If you prefer a synthetic option, nylon and polyester offer lightweight and breathable alternatives.

If your domain involves moisture, invest in waterproof footwear with top-notch features like sealed seams or waterproof membranes. These boots will keep your feet dry and comfortable, no matter how soaked the conditions become. When

navigating rough building sites or the great outdoors, opt for footwear with rugged outsoles that offer unparalleled traction and stability. Boots and shoes that have slip-resistant outsoles and offer excellent traction are crucial for maintaining your footing on slick surfaces, getting a grip on ladders and reducing the risk of slips and falls. Deep treads and anti-slip features minimise the chances of stumbling on uneven surfaces. And for those days spent in commercial premises or delicate environments, choose footwear with non-marking outsoles that won’t leave scuffs or damage flooring surfaces. Low-profile outsoles grant you the agility to manoeuvre effortlessly without compromising safety.

By selecting footwear tailored to the job’s demands, electrical contractors elevate their safety, comfort, and performance. Don’t underestimate the importance of investing in high quality footwear that meets industry standards and suits your specific work environment. Remember, your feet are the foundation of your success, and by selecting the right footwear, you’ll stride onto any job site with confidence, knowing you’ve equipped yourself with the perfect gear to keep you safe, comfortable and ready to conquer any challenge that comes your way.

THERE’S A TOOL FOR THAT…

Why is firesafe cable on the rise, and how can you take it on?

From blunt and defeated cable strippers to broken teeth, firesafe cable has proven a growing challenge for electricians in recent years. Working with its panel of electricians, C.K Tools’ product development team has heard countless tales of frustration, some of whom have resorted to biting the tough plastic jacketing when their tools fail them, with disastrous results.

But why is LS0H (low smoke zero halogen) cable increasingly prevalent?

While it isn’t a new product, a heightened awareness of fire safety, coupled with its growing use in the USA, Ireland and Europe, has seen the fire-safe material come into more common usage in the UK recently.

Made from thermoplastic material, LS0H was first developed in 1979. The incredibly tough cable jacketing is resistant to fire and fumes, and – critically – doesn’t produce smoke when it burns. While PVC may be cheaper, it produces a thick, acrid, highly toxic and corrosive smoke. This

smoke kills. Smoke inhalation, in fact, is a bigger cause of death than fire itself in fire related emergencies.

The Kings Cross Fire in 1987, for example, claimed the lives of 31 people and injured 100 more. What began with a lit match on a wooden escalator soon became a devastating blaze, but it wasn’t the flames that killed. Thick black smoke filled the ticket hall, leading to the deaths of almost everyone present. In response, cables containing halogen ceased to be used on the London Underground, and awareness and usage of LS0H cables grew.

Now, with the legacy of the Grenfell Tower tragedy looming large, there is a further rise in LS0H cable jacketing. In any area where smoke and toxic fumes could pose a risk to life, LS0H should be used. In public buildings and high-density housing in particular, use of LS0H is critical. Should a fire take hold, fumes from LS0H cabling will emit less than 0.5% HCL gas, dramatically cutting toxicity. What’s more, a lack of smoke will result in enhanced visibility, enabling easier evacuation.

It’s also important to distinguish between LS0H and LSF (low smoke and fume) cable. LSF is made from a modified PVC compound and emits 15-22% HCL gas upon burning. That’s 8-13% less than standard PVC. However, toxic fumes and thick black smoke will still pose a significant danger to life. While it is marginally safer than PVC, LSF should not be confused with LS0H which emits 0.5% HCL gas and, therefore, does not produce toxic fumes or black smoke, and does not pose a danger to life.

Cost-cutting measures, such as specifying PVC or LSF cable when LS0H is safer and more appropriate, are rightfully falling out of practise. New regulations around the use of LS0H are anticipated. But LS0H is more difficult to work with than PVC cable. The material is stronger and less flexible than its PVC or LSF counterparts. Many electricians have reported challenges in stripping the LS0H, as standard cable strippers fail to meet the strength of the thermoplastic material. Specialist strippers, made from toughened materials and with multiple blades, should be used when working with LS0H cable. C.K Tools has developed a product specifically for the job. Using the correct bracket size for the width of the cable, C.K Tools’ LS0H Cable Strippers peel the cable along its length, like a banana skin, allowing for simple stripping. With two titanium nitride coated blades and four cable brackets, it’s designed to tackle any size of LS0H cable effectively, with minimal effort.

Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Brand Manager at C.K Tools, says, “We work very closely with a large panel of electricians in all our product development. If there’s a need out there, we know about it, and we work to produce the perfect tool to take on the challenge. Stripping LS0H was a real issue for our customers, and so we have meticulously planned, refined, prototyped and tested the tool for the job. LS0H is, rightly, here to stay, and it’s crucial that our customers are prepared.”

Beyond having the right tools for the job, taking on LS0H requires an understanding of the material. Due to its tougher nature, LS0H can be inflexible. This can lead to cracking during installation. To prevent this, specialist lubricant is recommended to reduce friction. Of course, it’s important to also choose a non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive lubricant.

Working with LS0H cable may be more challenging and time-consuming, but choosing this cable over PVC or LSF could save lives. Armed with the right tools and equipment, and knowledge of its excellent fire safe credentials, tackling LS0H can be a straightforward and worthwhile process.

SIMPLIFYING WORK WITH ONE SYSTEM

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, looks at the benefits of investing in tools that share a common battery platform, including greater efficiency and cost savings, as

for demanding applications.

For any professional contractor, there is no such thing as a typical working day, so being prepared for every eventuality is key to ensuring work can be undertaken efficiently and safely. Whether working indoors, outdoors, in confined spaces, up ladders or down holes – being armed with a reliable set of tools that can tackle a wide selection of tasks with ease can help streamline work, maximise productivity and tick off the jobs (planned and unplanned) from the day’s list.

The development of brushless motor technology and the use of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries has transformed the performance of cordless power tools. Li-ion batteries provide high levels of charge and high voltage to work for long periods of time. What’s more, Li-ion batteries can be charged at any time, as they don’t need to be drained down completely beforehand and they do not self-discharge, meaning equipment can be stored for long periods and will be ready to use at the next session, without delay.

Thanks to advances in tool, motor and battery technology, today’s cordless tools can achieve torque and speed outputs that are comparable to its corded and pneumatic counterparts – with categories of cordless tools now available that were once considered unthinkable.

This is great news for professionals who have access to a vast choice of cordless power tools that can be used for almost every task. Furthermore, users are afforded with the additional benefits of increased flexibility and efficiency that battery powered tools offer in comparison to its corded counterparts.

By removing the need to carry transformers or locate a power source and get that power to the work area, battery power reduces the amount of set up time, and the risk of injury from trip hazards or cord entanglement is eliminated. Working in tight and awkward spaces is easier as cordless tools offer the flexibility to freely move around the work area and operators can position themselves in a way that makes the work easier and safer. In addition, battery-operated tools are often lighter and better balanced, giving users better control over the equipment.

By investing in a system or family of tools that share a common battery platform, work can be streamlined, especially on jobs where there is a need to swap between tools throughout the day depending on the task. If every tool uses the same type of battery, then it is simply a matter of switching the battery to the required machine to carry out the next task. For example, the Makita LXT platform encompasses more than 300 different products, all sharing the same battery, including disc cutters, angle grinders, SDS hammer drills, metal cut saws and multi-tools.

This also simplifies the amount of kit needed on site as one type of battery and charger can be used across the complete set of tools. An additional advantage to investing in a battery system is that it allows new tools to be purchased more cost effectively. This is because it allows tradespeople to take advantage of ‘body-only’ options as they already have the batteries.

For more demanding tasks, it is also worth considering cordless tools that feature a twin voltage system within the same battery platform, that are utilised to supply a more powerful motor. Systems that employ two complementary batteries to achieve this offer tradespeople the simplicity of staying within the same battery system, while benefiting from the greater power and longer runtimes required for high drain applications, such as drilling large diameter holes in masonry, cutting and chasing in stone, or removing brickwork.

Well designed twin battery systems will allow batteries with different capacities and even levels of charge to be used together. For example, a 4Ah Makita 18V LXT battery and a 5Ah Makita 18V LXT battery can be used to create 36 volts of power on twin 18V models (18V x2) and the tool will simply stop when the lower capacity battery is empty.

Cordless tools offer a number of advantages, including ease and flexibility of working and improved safety. With a wide range of products now available that use modern lithium-ion technology combined with sophisticated tool and motor design, there are very few tasks that cannot be completed cordlessly. Investing in a single system will help make work easier and simpler, especially where there are options for twin battery tools that deliver improved performance within the same battery platform.

WHY THE EDATA DATA POOL IS GOOD NEWS FOR CONTRACTORS

Contractors need easy access to reliable information about the products they are using. They often spend hours searching the web to get the information they need and cannot be certain that the information is accurate, up-to-date or reliable. What’s more, it’s difficult to compare like for like product performance.

Now there is an industry data pool –established three years ago and getting bigger every day – that has been created for electrical wholesalers to enable them

to provide the highest quality product information to their contractor/electrician customers. It’s called EDATA and is an initiative that has brought leading manufacturers and wholesalers together to improve the quality of data available in the supply chain.

The cloud-based data pool, EDATA, was launched by the trade body representing UK electrical wholesalers – the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) – in 2020 to facilitate the smooth and efficient flow of high quality product information from manufacturer to wholesaler and on to electricians and contractors.

High quality product information is essential for contractors

High quality product information is at the heart of EDATA. If the information on which buying decisions are made is inaccurate, vague or incomplete, then the product chosen may not be right for the job in hand. Purchasing errors are expensive for everyone in the supply chain, plus there’s the additional negativity around poor customer service and dissatisfaction.

Accurate product attributes, images and performance data means the contractor knows they are getting the

right product that will deliver the right performance for the job.

Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO of the EDA, explains more, “The concept of an industry data pool where trading partners can obtain, maintain and exchange information about products in a standard format and access it in one place is relatively new to the UK compared to other markets.

“Our colleagues in Europe have long-established industry data pools that are central to the efficient operation of the supply chain.

“EDATA was only launched in 2020 and has come a long way in a short space of time.

“The EDA works closely with manufacturers to help them create the best quality and most complete data in our sector and make it freely available to wholesalers through the EDATA data pool. There are well over 60 leading brands in EDATA currently, with more approaching us every week asking for more information. Not only will the number of products continue to grow but also the quality of the data that is key to EDATA’s success will improve as manufacturers work to obtain our Bronze, Silver and Gold data standards.”

How is the focus on high quality data managed?

Reassuringly for the contractor, behind the scenes in the EDATA data pool there are data quality scores built in. These benchmarks show the manufacturers and wholesalers that use EDATA just how complete the product data is: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Manufacturers constantly strive to achieve EDATA’s Gold standard – this is fast becoming the de facto standard for their data and ensures that any gaps in information are filled, images provided and technical features included.

Plus, manufacturers update their product data regularly as products are discontinued or as new products are put on the market. This is another reason why the EDATA data pool is crucial – manufacturers can log in and update their product data exactly when they need to. Wholesalers will be notified of the change and can ensure that their websites are kept up to date with the very latest information that contractors need.

Speed of service

Contractors need the answers to questions quickly and efficiently. Inside EDATA, wholesalers have access to high quality product information on over 190,000 products from 68 electrotechnical manufacturers and the data pool is growing all the time. As part of their service to contractor customers, wholesalers can use EDATA in a number of ways:

• Use search filters to find individual products to answer your questions at the trade counter.

• Download and print out live product data sheets and offer them to you as part of a quote or tender, or in an operation and maintenance manual.

• Download the data in bulk to use in their business systems including e-commerce, where you can search, filter and buy the right product for the job.

If you are using an EDA Member Wholesaler, there’s a good chance that

if you are given a product data sheet as part of a quotation, tender or operation and maintenance pack, it will have been generated from live data in EDATA.

Equally, if the wholesaler has an e-commerce offering, the data that you search on their website may have been generated from EDATA.

Richard Appleton, Head of Digitalisation at the EDA, explains more, “Wholesalers run busy trade counters and it takes time to contact each manufacturer separately to request product information. EDATA Data Sheets solve that problem by giving wholesalers access to tens of thousands of products in just a few clicks.

“EDATA Data Sheets are created on demand by pulling in the latest product information and product images stored in the EDATA Data Pool. Wholesalers can print out the data sheets, which follow a standard template, or email them to their contractor customers, who may wish to use them as part of a submittal or an operations and maintenance manual for their clients.”

So, the next time you visit a trade counter or call your wholesaler, ask if they are using EDATA and request a live data sheet.

BYE-BYE FLUORESCENT LAMPS…

In the interests of environmental and climate protection, countries across Europe have lighting products in their sights. It has taken up the fight against inefficient light sources with the Single Lighting Regulation (SLR) and the Energy Labelling Regulation (ELR), and against the use of mercury with the RoHS Directive.

As a result, compact fluorescent lamps and fluorescent lamps can no longer be placed on the market from specific dates in 2023-2024. We talked to Axel Klöckner, Key Account Manager Industry at LEDVANCE, about the effects of the ban and the alternatives.

ECN: What does the 2023 lamp ban mean to you?

AK: LEDVANCE is well prepared and has excellent alternatives in its range. Even so, we face major challenges where across Europe, the ban will affect over a billion light sources. Compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases can no longer be placed on the UK market as of February 2024; the same equivalent date for T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes. In most cases, switching to LED technology will require the services of an electrician – and according to a recent survey, almost 50% of installers are unfamiliar or insufficiently familiar with the situation. Time is running out.

ECN: What are the alternatives?

AK: We offer four separate options to meet different needs – two solutions that are lamp-based and two that are luminaire-based. If lamps are to be replaced we have the retrofit option, in other words simple direct replacement, or the conversion option, i.e. rewiring to 230V. In the case of luminaires, we offer luminaire-inluminaire upgrades or installation of new LED luminaires.

ECN: And which do you recommend?

AK: That depends on the situation on site. New luminaires are more likely to be considered for large-scale refurbishments and new construction projects. In most cases, however, simple lamp replacement should be the most economically sensible solution.

ECN: How is that economically sensible? LED tubes are much more expensive than conventional fluorescent tubes...

AK: That’s true. But don’t forget the enormous energy savings of well over 50% and the extremely long life of LED tubes of up to 75,000 hours. Compared to a traditional fluorescent lamp, a single LED tube saves not only on energy costs amounting to several hundred euros over its lifetime but also on maintenance costs. The return on investment is just a few months on average, and a little longer for the rewiring option.

ECN: So, do you prefer direct replacement to rewiring?

AK: Certainly not. The retrofit solution only works with conventional control gear (CCG) or compatible electronic control gear (ECG). What you often find in places such as workshops, factories and warehouses, particularly after maintenance work has been carried out, is a mix of control gear within the same lighting system. Direct replacement will not then work for all the luminaires, but you usually only find that out after installing the replacements. In such cases it makes more sense to rewire straight away to 230V. Conversion increases the initial costs a little, but the results are impressive – and since there are no longer any energy losses at the control gear after rewiring, efficiency is even higher.

ECN: How long does rewiring take?

AK: The installer will need about 10 minutes per luminaire. The work itself is really straightforward. We provide instructions and offer a conversion kit with all the necessary materials, including a type plate that indicates the voltage of 230V.

ECN: Do people have to change all the light sources by the deadline?

AK: Fluorescent lamps that are already installed can be safely used until they fail. However, companies should bear in mind that changing all the light sources at the same time is more economical as it reduces the replacement costs per

light source. Switching to LED lights is worthwhile in any case in view of recent increases in the cost of electricity. So, if the light sources in a factory are to be changed it makes sense to include all the offices at the same time. After all, the lights would all have to be changed as soon as individual fluorescent lamps start to fail there.

ECN: Many people are sceptical about switching to LED tubes. What do you say to them?

AK: Switching to LED tubes is inexpensive and easy to do. In addition to a wide range of LED tubes, we offer the first DALI-2 solution that is dimmable and suitable for emergency power in the form of our new External System consisting of an LED tube and an external driver. Our popular Damp Proof Housing, in combination with SubstiTUBE T8 Connected, is a cost-effective solution featuring wireless presence detection, making it ideal for parking garages, warehouses and corridors. We also offer LED tubes with an integrated sensor. And anyway, there is no way around the changeover for anyone. I advise everyone in the lighting industry to actively engage with your customers now and start switching as the demand is identified.

WARMUP LAUNCES UPDATED DCM-PRO HEATED DECOUPLING SYSTEM

Warmup has announced a new update to it DCM-PRO Heated Decoupling System. DCM-PRO is a popular electric underfloor heating solution with installers around the world due to its innovative anti-fracture protection and ease of installation. To provide even greater versatility, DCM-PRO has been redeveloped with an optimised castellation design and two different membrane options: the classic Peel and Stick, featuring a self-adhesive backing, and a new fleece-backed option for use with traditional adhesives.

The new DCM-PRO membrane with fleece-backing has been designed to use with adhesives on uneven subfloors, offering a more conventional floor heating installation method. The fleece-backed membrane means subfloors are not required to be smooth before fitting the heating system, saving time on additional preparation.

The DCM-PRO fleece-backed membrane is ideal for installation with adhesives during the colder months of the year as it can be installed over damp floors, facilitating a secure bond with the subfloor despite difficult environmental conditions. And since tile adhesive typically takes some time to dry, the membrane can be adjusted during the initial installation, so any laying errors can be quickly corrected with little stress.

The next generation of the DCM-PRO Heated Decoupling System features an updated castellation design for an even smoother installation. Fitting the heating cable by hand within the castellations is now easier than ever and the softer material used for the membrane will provide less strain during installation. DCM-PRO with a fleece-backing allows for a wider selection of levelling compounds to be used too. It is approved by Instarmac for use with S1 adhesive, Level IT 2 and Level IT Ultimate levelling compounds, offering true versatility for your next underfloor heating installation.

The updated DCM-PRO retains an ultra-low profile, so it will still have a negligible effect on floor build-up heights, making it the perfect heating solution for both renovation and new-build projects. It is available in clear, convenient sizes and can assist in reducing energy usage by up to 35% compared to traditional radiator systems.

FOUR NEW FINISHES FOR KNIGHTSBRIDGE’S 45W USB WALL CHARGERS

Knightsbridge has enhanced its range pioneering 45W USB charging solutions with the introduction of four additional decorative finishes in the company’s popular screwless format.

At the time of their initial launch, Knightsbridge’s 45W USB sockets and modules were the fastest chargers available on the market and still remain at the top of the competitive tree. Now, beyond curved or square edge moulded sockets in white, these powerful 230V 13A two-gang switched USB sockets come in anthracite, matt black, matt white and brushed chrome.

The sockets offer up to 45W PD (Power Delivery) over a USB-C port and 18W QC (Quick Charge) over a USB-A port. This means that power-hungry devices like laptops can be charged from wall outlets with compatible cables using a 45W USB-C port and without the need for bulky adapters. QC devices (mainly android-based smartphones) can be charged at up to 18W, allowing for a quick charge of up to 50% in under 30 minutes with compatible smartphones.

Knightsbridge, mlaccessories.co.uk

And with a choice of two heating cables, you can specify the system for standard wattage projects of between 112.5W/m²-225W/m² and low wattage projects of between 41.3W/m²-82.5W/m².

The DCM-PRO Heated Decoupling System can be controlled by Warmup’s award-winning Smart Thermostats, and is supported by Warmup’s market-leading digital tools and globally trusted 24/7/365 technical assistance.

SCOLMORE ADDS ANTIQUE BRASS TO ITS DEFINITY COMPLETE RANGE

As electrical contractors look towards decorative wiring accessories to achieve a smooth, clean finish for interiors, the demand for flat plate wiring accessories that compliment a room’s décor has been on the rise. In response to this, the Definity Complete range, which incorporates screwless, push-fit face plates, has now been extended to include the stylish Antique Brass finish.

Definity Complete has evolved from Click Scolmore’s well-established Definity flat plate accessory range and features all of the same attributes, including modular switching, but without the visible fixing screws. Because the face plates are supplied independently of the electrical inserts, it means that the initial installation of the product can be carried out and any subsequent maintenance or decoration completed before the final fixing of the face plate.

The inserts are available in black, white and grey and the addition of Antique Brass to the range of cover plate finishes brings the total number of finishes to eight. Scolmore, scolmore.com

KNIPEX ADDS 185MM LENGTH TO NEEDLE-NOSE COMBINATION PLIERS RANGE

KNIPEX Needle-Nose Pliers are high leverage combination pliers with pointed jaws and are a further development of the classic combination pliers from the famous KNIPEX Wuppertal tool forge. Needle-Nose pliers are now also available in a length of 185mm. With the versatile Needle-Nose combination pliers, tasks in the professional workshop and on electrical installations can be carried out effortlessly as these slim pliers can even cope perfectly with tight, hard-to-reach work areas.

Building on the classic KNIPEX combination pliers, these flexible pliers are twist-proof and full of power. A high lever transmission power joint makes it easier to cut soft, medium-hard and hard wire, making the pliers a high leverage diagonal cutter.

The convex profile of the serrations in the pipe gripping area results in a stable three-point contact and means round pipes can be easily gripped and powerfully turned. Hexagonal profiles can also be powerfully turned. A milled transverse groove in the gripping area also makes it easy to securely hold and pull out even tiny items such as nails, pins and bolts.
