HOME HOUSE HORIZONS Bit of news away from, but definitely related to the target market for smart home and automation installations. Our team is currently working on the re-launch of an in-house magazine for a private members club in west London called Home House. This fun palace is one, if not the oldest private members clubs in the capital and far from the often imagined ‘dusty old men reading the financial times’, this place is a riot of colour, fun and frivolity, the EI team fit right in. Naturally we were delighted when we were asked to revive the in-house magazine for this beautiful space which marries classic Georgian architecture with a modern twist and offers its members a myriad of ways to unwind, take a bit of exercise, stay over or enjoy high-quality food and drink. The clientele varies enormously from London residents looking for a relaxing evening, to those who live outside of London who need a home from home when they are in town. People who enjoy membership vary from those who work in the arts and those who work in the ‘city’. A real varied bunch, but they all have one thing in common, they and their respective social groupings, are all potential clients of the home automation and AV industries. The one thing that members do tend to have in common is that they belong to the higher earning brackets of UK society, and tend to own properties where they might expect to want the very best, in at least some of their choices in life. It’s difficult to get accurate figures, but it is safe to say that the luxury end of AV and home automation is still underrepresented when it comes to new builds and home renovation. The industry stands on the

04 MARCH 2022

edge of gilt-edged opportunity to change that. Our experiences at Home House have underlined that fact only too well, with pretty much everyone we talk to impressed with what they hear about what our sector offers. In the Home House magazine we are providing a small insight into what our sector offers and will continue to do in future issues, however we are of course creating articles covering fashion, travel, food and drink and home furnishings. During EI’s discussions with these related fields, the subject of what else we publish often comes up and again here the response is positive, ‘that sounds really cool’, ‘I didn’t know you could do that now’ are both common responses. This all bodes well for the future of our sector, awareness is growing, reception is positive, its up to us to make sure these client groups are thinking about us instead of other options to enhance their lives.

KEF AND ONEAV PARTNER FOR CI SUPPLY British high-end audio operator, KEF and the specialist B2B trade-only distributor, OneAV have announced a new high-fidelity partnership, with OneAV now officially appointed as the home of KEF for the custom install (CI) channel. “Our tagline is ‘supplying technology installers’ and it’s that word ‘technology’ that makes KEF distinctly different to competing speaker products”, says OneAV’s James Trumper, “KEF’s engineering team continues to deliver technologies that make their speakers a demonstrably superior choice for CI (custom-installed) applications. ‘Uni-Q’ for example, disperses sound more evenly throughout a room allowing everyone sitting at different spots to experience the same natural, detailed sound. This is a major standout benefit for architectural speakers designed to be built into the fabric of a room.” KEF states that the company exists to fill rooms with music as it was made to be heard, to move souls with truly authentic soundscapes. Patented innovations reinforce KEF’s reputation as a proud pioneer of excellence in sound. From the Tangerine Waveguide and Uni-Q coincident speaker driver to the Uni-Core technology in KEF subwoofers for vastly reduced cabinet size. OneAV will collaborate with KEF in bringing a strong experience for installers countrywide by providing unique services to reward loyal customers,

alongside transparent and useful information, quick turnaround, and impeccable reliability. KEF’s Commercial Director, Sarah Yule, commented, “I am delighted that we have formed a new partnership with OneAV. Their ethos and growth plans align perfectly with KEF’s strategic direction in the UK. We have seen a very positive trajectory within our domestic installation business during the last year, and I have complete faith that this growth will continue with even greater momentum via this new partnership. Our plans for the future are exciting, including a unique space where we will be able to invite installers and their clients to visit for a true listen and believe moment!” OneAV oneav.co.uk

Paul said, “I’m looking forward to working with Clarity Alliance, to use my experience and drive to help shape the association and support its members as we head across a commercial landscape in which everything has changed. It makes me excited for the future!” Pauls experience in consumer electronics goes back to the 1990s, progressing from part time shop floor assistant and up through the management chain of various retailers. In 1999 he joined Sharp Electronics, eventually becoming head of training. He worked for Denon as an area sales manager for its retail channels and made a lot of friends in the Hi-Fi industry. After a period with Nikon, developing its multiple retail channels, Paul founded sales training and support specialist T21 Group in 2015, developing the company into a gold standard for training in the electronics retail industry. Monitor Audio Group, has boosted its senior management team with the promotion of Robert Barford and appointment of Richard Page. Robert commented, “Since joining the Group five years ago, I have seen the company develop its dealer base, brands, products and people. We work with exceptional business partners and have supported and recruited some of the best talent in the industry. Richard Page has also joined the Group as Operations Director. Robert said, “I am thrilled that we have been able to attract someone of Richard’s caliber to the Group. Richard brings 30+ years of experience and a wealth of supply chain, procurement and operational knowledge to our industry and will be a fantastic addition to the team.” The company has also announced that Annette Callum, Export Admin Manager, and Lee Manning, Production Director, are due to retire this year. He brings a great deal of CI industry expertise, insight, and knowledge to the table. Joe said, “I am humbled by the opportunity to join one of the leading teams in residential technology. This new position not only shows Origin’s amazing growth, but also their complete respect and commitment to the CEDIA integrator market.” Fine Sounds UK, the British home to McIntosh, Sonus faber, IsoTek and Bassocontinuo, has expanded its UK team with two new appointments, and a key promotion. ESSENTIAL HABITECH

GREEN IS THE NEW GOLD!

Habitech can offer unrivalled supply, support, and performance for every outdoor AV project, so when your customers ask for ways to celebrate new post-Covid freedoms, we’ll be here with all the answers

A new love for outdoor living will enrich your business, with a little help from Habitech, says Jonathan Pengilley. It’s all looking great for outdoor AV. Amid the upsurge in remote working, and after the traumas of lockdown, all the energy is pointing toward the home as the focus for work and play. Mindfulness is on the up and the benefits of leisure and togetherness prioritised. More than ever, home is where the heart is - emotionally and vocationally - tiggering unprecedented opportunities for your business and partners like Habitech. Question is, are you ready to capitalise, because it looks as if this post-Covid reality may be baked in forever.

THE HOME SHIFT

A recent feature in ‘The Times’ suggested that as many as two in five home workers will never return to the office. According to its own YouGov survey, 71 per cent of people preferred working from home (WFH) with 58 per cent believing they were more productive when they did. In defiance of the Government’s call for a return to the office, the polling found that 63 per cent were still working remotely while 39 per cent said they would keep it that way. That’s a big mind shift. What’s more, this profound swing in the worklife pendulum comes with a greater focus on

14 MARCH 2022

‘wellbeing’, as the Government’s 2021 ‘People and Nature Survey for England’ confirms. It notes that ‘almost everyone agreed that spending time outdoors is beneficial for their physical and mental health’. On top of this, a Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) survey from last year reveals that 87 per cent of UK adults believe that gardens and green spaces benefit their state of mind, while 84 per cent agree with the positive effects on physical health. Correlate these heightened priorities with soaring demand for country properties on the rural/urban fringe and the strongest growth in outdoor leisure expenditure in six years (according to Savills UK), and the direction of travel for millions of remote workers is as clear as a summer’s day. Not only that, it’s pointing straight at your door.

LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

This is because your wealthy clients are as influenced by the new post-covid reality as the rest of us, and when they’re not splashing the cash on holidays, they’ll be spending it at home, blurring the traditional divide between home and garden to maximise the benefits of a more flexible and heathier work-life balance. In effect the pandemic has turbo-charged the idea of the garden as a ‘fifth room’ of the house. Many Society of Garden Designers (SGD) members are now curating their work for the wellbeing of richer ‘Zoom tethered’ home

workers, incorporating outdoor kitchen areas, wellness spaces, mindfulness zones, firepits, and garden rooms in their plans. This means there’s no better time to be planting the concept of ultra-discreet high-performance outdoor AV in the minds of garden design pros, which is why we’ll be revealing everything from the wire to the wonderful at the Futurescape Spring trade exhibition in March.

BREAKING NEW GROUND

For me, making these connections is a nobrainer when we have so much to offer the garden design community. Work with Habitech and together we’ll treat the garden pros to the best in luxury outdoor AV performance from an unrivalled choice of systems, budgets and project scales. What’s more, we’ll bolster your proposal with custom coverage plans and schematics involving high status AV products from Samsung, Sonance, and James Loudspeaker; unbreakable Wi-Fi coverage from Ruckus, the awesome new AI-driven security smarts of Dahua’s IP cameras and compatible NVRs, and the finest armoured infrastructure from Cleerline fibre and SCP - all with the supreme value-added backup you’re used to from Habitech. In other words, we can offer you the ability to transfer all that you do inside the property to the outside, meeting luxury levels of performance and the stealthiest of design standards.

READY FOR EVERYTHING OUTDOORS

Samsung’s ‘The Terrace’ TVs turn outdoor viewing into an epic entertainment experience

GO WITH THE FLOW

For instance, when garden designers and landscapers are so careful to avoid any conflict with their grand design vision, they’ll love the super discreet sat-sub form factor of the Sonance outdoor range, which covers every application in beautifully scalable 70V or 8ohm deployments - even the flagship 15” Landscape subs will disappear beneath the shrubbery. Similarly submerged within resort and hotel gardens, the Omni-6T 70V/100V/8ohm fullrange speaker delivers an amazing 360-degree sound field, while by the pool or hot tub, the Military 810G certified VP Extreme line of inwall speakers gives you remarkably detailed full range audio from near-invisible installations. Then there’s the elegant Mariner line of tough IP66-rated paintable on-walls and the superdurable Rock satellites, made to vanish into rockeries. How could any SGD member resist that designed subterfuge?

THEN AGAIN, THERE’S JAMES

For the ultimate in disguise, straight from a Mission Impossible storyline, you can rely on James Loudspeaker. Its ambition to ‘personalise’ the installation of audio for an elite clientele has seen it rise to become the ultimate US custom brand. James’ big secret is its ability to practice the ‘art of bespoke’ more efficiently and cost-

Habitech’s end-to-end outdoor design expertise will support pristine signal transfer as well with all the custom infrastructure you’ll ever need. ESSENTIAL CEDIA

THE ASSISTED LIVING MARKET

Chris Thorne of Imperium examines the complexities of the assisted living market. Assisted living is a complicated market for home technology integrators. On the one hand, we can all see that it presents a huge market opportunity. Around one-fifth of the UK population (19%) was aged 65 or over in 2019, that’s around 12.3 million people. The number of people in this age group increased by 23% between 2009 and 2019, at a time when the whole UK population only increased by 7%. The older population in the UK is projected to grow, with people aged 65 and over making up 24% of the population by 2043 (17.4 million people). At the same time, the UK Government is keen to reduce the capacity and financial burdens of an ageing and less able population on the NHS and social care providers. Their ambition is to create the right housing environments that can keep people safe and healthy, whilst allowing them to live independently. Our industry and its skill sets are attuned to delivering technology that can be part of the solution for the ‘assisted living’ market. Typical requirements to help the elderly and less able may include automatically turning the lights on and off, opening curtains, windows and doors, moving furniture and controlling access safely to the home. The technological change from installing home entertainment and home automation systems for our current client base to designing and installing solutions for assisted living is, in many ways, a small one. We speak from recent experience following our work on the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation (QEF) project which won the Life Lived Best At Home and the Best MDU Categories at the

16 MARCH 2022

2021 CEDIA Awards. The QEF provides care and neurorehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury and was seeking to provide accessible technology for a new 48-room Care and Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey. Their goal was to increase residents’ independence by enabling them to control their own home environment and entertainment; where they would otherwise be reliant on care providers or family. We integrated all the core systems including AV, intercom, lighting, HVAC and shading onto a Crestron platform with Amazon Echo/Alexa the primary user interface. The voice control has been enhanced to include alternative options such as eye-gaze solutions and text to speech apps, like Speak4Me, which enable Alexa voice commands to be triggered via a touch-pad. As each resident has unique needs, automated changes of environmental conditions are unsuitable for the facility. Our solution is easily customisable for each individual. This is achieved via the Alexa app and has the advantage that it can be carried out by the client, family or QEF within minutes. The scalability of the system means that additional components such as motorised windows, door controllers or smart sockets, can be added in the future, if required. We’re very proud of this project. And it’s been incredibly rewarding for the team at Imperium to work on it and deliver technology solutions that are so important and meaningful to QEF, its staff and its residents. However, the business model does present key differences to the luxury residential sector. Primarily, the budgets are, on the face of it

at least, much tighter and the procurement process itself can be more challenging to navigate. It takes longer and demands plenty of patience when working through that process to unlock the routes to funding. From our side, we also need to be patient in the way that we present the nature of our solutions and the lifestyle, as opposed to the medical, benefits they bring. Our industry is not about wearable devices, for example, that might alert a family member that someone has had a fall. Our technologies are much more about the way that the elderly and less able can interact with their environment in terms of lighting, blinds, audio-visual services and temperature control to make their lives comfortable, easier and as enjoyable as possible. This is a really exciting space. But we need to educate ourselves about how to approach it and we need to educate the market about what our industry can provide. CEDIA has recently been appointed as a member of the cross-party public policy think tank, Policy Connect. As part of its membership, CEDIA has become an associate member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Assistive Technology and will help oversee the Smart Homes and Independent Living Commission. This is an important step in that education process and one I’d encourage all members to learn more about and support. Together, we can make a positive difference in the assisted living space. imperium.uk

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS

DEMONSTRATION, DEMONSTRATION, DEMONSTRATION! Pulse Cinemas has always offered strong demonstration facilities at its Stansted HQ, now the company has upped the ante once more with a complete revamp all of its facilities. Simon Schino, Director of Sales and Marketing, leads the tour. The term Reference Cinema means that any system carrying this name must deliver on industry recognised performance levels of course, however with our new flagship home cinema, we wanted to go further. We needed to deliver a new way to design a cinema using every discipline involved to its fullest extent. Our new Reference Cinema uses the best brands available including Alcons Audio, Trinnov, Kaleidescape, Vicoustic, Fortress Seating, Sim2 and Screen Research, all expertly brought to life by our Director of Technical Sales, Simon Gibbs and the team, (for a full kit list go to www.pulsecinemas.com/case-studies). The cinema also draws on the in-house expertise we have in interior design and furnishings to create a space of effortless class, performance and luxury. Yes, cinemas have mixed interior design and high-performance before, but they have not done it to this level where the products used offer no compromise to the aesthetic ambition or performance demands for the space. This is

18 MARCH 2022

a cinema where form truly meets function, but don’t take my word for it, come and experience this space for yourself and bring your customers, it’s what we have created it for. Just across from the Reference Cinema, the Apartment Cinema has been rebuilt and now even more than ever shows the level of performance and comfort you can go to with a compact space. Also using many Pulse Cinemas established favourites, Sim2, Screen Research and Kaleidescape, this space also gives Paradigm and Anthem the chance to flex their home cinema muscles. Space can be at a premium even in large homes and in metropolitan dwellings, space is always hard to come by. The real power of this cinema is that everyone that visits can imagine a system like this fitting somewhere into their home and the ‘buy the room’ urge is very strong. Also in the space we are now proud to present our new division, Pulse Simulations. Game play and multi-media entertainment has come on leaps and bounds in recent times. Weaving

the latest games consoles into a home cinema is a great sales point, but at Pulse Cinemas, we always want to go up a level and the racing simulations we present offer a stand-alone experience that driving enthusiasts will want to own. Like the Apartment Cinema system itself, this new experience, with its simulated g-force and myriad of different driving challenges, will put you in the driving seat for powerful demonstrations.

Minotti London showcases interior design and AV in perfect partnership

THE NEXT LEVEL

Going up to the next level of Pulse Cinemas HQ, we have our Media Room, a way of showing visitors just how subtle a high-performance home cinema can be. Woven into the fabric of this space, which was designed by our in-house interior design team, are two home cinema systems, one based around a large screen TV and one using a Screen Research Décor Mask installation that offers the chance for users to add stunning art to their room whilst the cinema is at rest. If you think you have experienced this room before, think again, it’s been reimagined and is better than ever. As the need for integrating systems more fully into existing living spaces and delivering even higher integration between the AV and interior design disciplines grows, this room is the perfect way to show customers how every part of their dream can be made into a reality.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Also featuring Screen Research and Sim2 XTV, is a new demonstration area in our Reception space. These two brands are showing that these days there are few ‘no-go’ areas for cinema and expanding the idea that these systems can also be used in a widening arena of applications such as in the commercial and hospitality sectors. Come and see how good this new system is as it welcomes you just over the threshold of Pulse Cinemas HQ. Talking of new systems we have another off-site project in the works, which underlines our ambitions to offer our dealers a multitude of demonstration sites for client meetings, situated around the UK. Located just north of London in a key commuter belt zone, will be a brand-new system partnered with a very special venue. More news on that very soon.

We are holding regular open days at Pulse Cinemas, the next dates will be March 16, and 23, and April 6 and 20. There will be morning and afternoon sessions at these fully catered events, look at our social media feeds, your in-box and the output from Essential Install so you can register and ensure you are a part of what promises to be a fun and informative experience. Above and beyond that, if you need to access these facilities for a client visit, please contact the team at Pulse Cinemas. Bottom line here is that demonstration is the life blood of this industry. If you take one message, it’s come and see us, bring your customers and together let’s build a new era in luxury AV, home cinema, automation and entertainment experiences. ESSENTIAL CONNECTED DISTRIBUITION

DISTRIBUTED AUDIO

Is there a future in distributed audio for custom installers? Russound thinks so. Mike Bonnette, Connected Distribution’s director explains. When home-based distributed audio was first introduced, way back in the dim and distant past, it followed the typical product lifecycle for a tech development. The engineers had come up with a great idea - “let’s send audio all round peoples’ houses” - without actually knowing whether there was a demand for it. Uptake was really slow, awareness was low, the products were expensive and beyond the reach of most people. As a result, it was only the ‘early adopters’ or uber-wealthy who bought into it and so sales just crept along. Oh, and the products could be really buggy. But it was a pretty cool thing and word did slowly begin to spread. The tech got sorted, the bugs ironed out and more manufacturers started making products. The prices began to come down and more people decided to put

20 MARCH 2022

systems in their houses. For custom installers this was a boom time – the products were complicated and so needed the experts to make them work. After a few golden years it slowly began to go a bit sour for the CI distributed audio market. A group of four clever internet savvy people in the US began working on a wholly wireless multi-room streaming audio system. They saw wires, speaker cables and piles of black boxes as the enemy, and even the PC as an unfortunate necessity (as a music server in the days before music streaming services). They created a product that delivered synchronised, multiroom music streaming from a product that could be purchased on the high street and controlled using the recently released iPhone. Why would you ever need a hard-wired, centralised, serverbased system, with wall-mounted keypads that also required a demolition team and decorators to install? That’s the tech lifecycle for you in a nutshell: an engineer’s idea, the early-adopters, wider acceptance and then the mass market version that leaves the idea’s originators scratching their heads and wondering how they’ve been left behind? The question for us, now we are firmly in the latter stage of this lifecycle, is how do we, as a traditional installer-based industry compete? Should we even try keep on pushing our centralised, installed solutions? Or should we join the bandwagon and sell the very same product because that’s what the customer is asking for (it is, of course, synonymous, like Hoover is to vacuum cleaners).

All is not lost for the installers; we have some great alternatives up our sleeves. Manufacturers such as Russound have been working hard to take wireless audio distribution to the next level and offer additional features that benefit the consumers. Take the MBX series – compact streamers that create wireless multi-room solutions and also act as roombased amplifiers that connect to a TV’s audio output, auto-sensing when the TV is switched on and then reverting to streaming when it’s switched off. And they do high-res audio, have Bluetooth connectivity as well as Airplay 2 and Chromecast, are fully controllable and come with the legendary Russound sound quality. They’re the perfect product for people who want all the features, convenience and appreciate good quality audio. They also come with a good margin for the installer – akin to other specialist CI electronics - and they’re protected from grey imports and DIY installation as they’re part of the Russound Certified Installer programme. You have to be signed up to unlock the product, helping protect the livelihoods of hard-working installers. Industries will always evolve and new players will come along to challenge the established brands, but, in Russound at least, there is a brand that has risen to the challenge of the challenger and is firmly behind the custom installer. Russound is available in the UK exclusively from Connected Distribution. Connected Distribution connecteddistribution.com

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

THE IMPORTANCE OF TESTING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR AV Aiden Jones, Technical Director, Blustream EMEA, underlines the importance of a safety first attitude when it comes to cables and connections. HDBaseT uses PAM16 signaling which creates 16 voltage levels across the cable from the point of transmission to the point of receive, with 8 voltage levels on the return path. This asymmetric link can transfer up to 8Gbps of data across infrastructures designed to cope with much less. This modulated signal will degrade dramatically over distance – even in a nearperfect environment. By the time the signal reaches the HDBaseT receiver chip over a full distance run, the eye diagram that would be seen at the start of the run, will have almost completely inter-twined. No longer will there be clearly differentiated voltage levels, but the magic of the HDBaseT receiver chipset, is its ability to take that collapsed eye diagram, and reopen it in order to recover the data encoded at each level. Quite simply, the process of sending data to the millions of pixels on our UHD displays, multiple times per second, cannot be carried

26 MARCH 2022

out efficiently where a cable infrastructure is compromised. As the demands of video distribution increasing as the technology evolves, the infrastructure our equipment is connected to has never needed to be as robust. This is an extremely important consideration as the performance of a cable will directly influence the performance of HDBaseT transmissions. As a manufacturer of HDBaseT equipment, we do receive calls from integrators asking why they are experiencing issues on certain cable runs when using HDBaseT technology. We hear statements such as, “the cable tested absolutely fine”, or “I am using HDBaseT cable.” Digging a little deeper into the tests that have been carried out, there are very few that have performed a suitable test that will qualify the cable for use with a modulated signal type. So, the ‘million-dollar’ question… What would be considered an adequate test for a cable that is going to be used for HDBaseT?

Many integrators will carry a type of LAN tester, these could range from basic wiremappers, right through to 10GbE certifier grade testers. The truth is any type of cable test is going to give some form of indication for the suitability of a signal being able to be transferred across the cable – be it the most basic test of ensuring that the pins have been terminated to their retrospective terminal on the far side of the link; to certifying the cable to a recognised international standard. However, the transmission of packetised data is very different to the modulated HDBaseT data flow. So, can a 10GbE IP / LAN tester therefore be used to qualify a link that is going to be used for a very different transmission type? Truth is, this will give you the best indication for an 8Gbps signal out of all the LAN test equipment out there, but they are two very different signal types being treated as one – a common misconception because we use the same cable.

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

TO TEST A CABLE FOR ITS SUITABILITY FOR A HDBASET TRANSMISSION, THE DATA NEEDS TO BE A HDBASET SIGNAL

Once a cable has been run through a property – under floors, behind walls, or above ceilings, it is subject to environmental influences such as EMI or RF interference. The cable may have also

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

been improperly handled during installation without the due care and attention paid to kinks or the bend radius. Other factors such as the number of cables run simultaneously (cable bundling), zip ties being used at multiple points to secure cabling, or improper termination can all have an adverse effect on high-bandwidth data signals. The use of pre-existing cabling within a property could be fraught with risk without the due diligence of qualification, at least before taking out a contract to deliver a video signal from A to B using said cable. It is fair to say that HDBaseT has been the defacto video distribution method since its inception over 10 years ago, but many still seem to have issues, even if intermittent during commissioning or within the first six months since installation. With Video over IP technology forging forwards, and the capability of being able to distribute visually lossless video

/Essentialinstall

over a network, there is a back-up for the times where HDBaseT may not perform flawlessly, but HDBaseT is a proven technology which we know works. On occasions where we visit a site with an integrator that is having issues with HDBaseT, we first look at the overall infrastructure. Best practises for installation of cabling is usually the first area in which we investigate. In most cases the reports of issues are so random that it is extremely hard to re-create. We have used the MS-TestPro from MSolutions for a few years now, as the only true test device for HDBaseT that is endorsed by the HDBaseT Alliance. It gives us an x-ray vision to check the key variables for a HDBaseT installation – it also gives us the ability to log performance for up to 24 hours for those intermittent issues that are reported, but not seen. HDBaseT is such a forgiving technology, designed to get video, audio, control and power across the ‘dusty fields of battle’ – so it copes with many of the issues we throw at it. Unfortunately this flexibility breeds the scenario that many just ‘plug and pray’. Who knows how many installations out there are on the edge of the digital cliff? They work now, but how many will continue to work as the environment changes? It is not about hoping it will work, it is handing over a project knowing that it will continue to perform for many years to come. The MSolutions tester, in our eyes, will confirm this; help to diagnose where there are issues; becoming a bit part of the solution far more effectively than wasted labour or new cabling runs.

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

Super Hero level speed is today’s primary need

CABLE IS NO HARD CHOICE Now Wi-Fi’s everywhere, choosing a wireless system over a hard-wired one would seem like a no-brainer. But is it? Let’s delve into the pros and cons a little, says FS Cable Marketing Manager, Mark Mastrangelo. Wi-Fi has certainly toughened up since the early era of variable signal strength and consistency. We all use mobile devices, and Wi-Fi eases our journey with them but when we need a robust system (for home entertainment for example), wired Ethernet has plenty going for it. And at the heavier commercial end, industry commentators accept that you’re probably better to run Ethernet cabling to your key devices – PCs, gaming consoles, set-top boxes and back-up devices – but exactly how does hard wiring win over top Wi-Fi routers? In three words: speed, latency and connectivity.

SPEED

With recent standards like 802.11ac and 802.11n reportedly delivering speeds of 866.7Mb/s and 150Mb/s, Wi-Fi is in the faster

30 MARCH 2022

lane for sure and can cope with your usual everyday tasks. However, those speeds can jump to 10Gb/s for Ethernet wired with Cat 6 cable, or around 1Gb/s with Cat 5e – consistently. Looking at speed between network devices though, wired Ethernet wins over Wi-Fi –when transferring files between two computers in the house for example. Your Internet connection is not involved here so the bottom line is how quickly your local network hardware delivers the data.

LATENCY

What is it? The delay moving traffic from device to destination – dubbed `ping` by gamers – and it can loom large in network efficiency. When reaction time’s critical, wired Ethernet is for you but ping’s no big thing when web

browsing, streaming videos or listening to music, experts say. You can test latency by pinging your router’s IP address while connected over Wi-Fi then over wired Ethernet, comparing both to see how much latency Wi-Fi adds. It’s a fair bit.

CONNECTIVITY

This really is a no brainer. Wired Ethernet delivers a more reliable connection than Wi-Fi – end of. Interference can dog Wi-Fi connectivity big time. Home layout can offer so many disruptive elements for wireless systems. Some plasterboards can deaden the signal for example, while electrical devices, even your neighbours’ Wi-Fi networks can interfere with it, to lower reliability – but wired Ethernet sidesteps such troubles.

What advantages do wired networks still deliver?

That interference can spell dropped signals, higher latency and lower speeds, impacting signal quality and connection speeds. It varies if you move around with mobile devices but you can reduce levels to optimise Wi-Fi signal. While Wi-Fi certainly ticks the boxes for some applications, for those such as home networks and light commercial in cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs, you only really have one option. – hard-wired Ethernet. It delivers higher speed, lower latency and more reliable connection. Wi-Fi on the other hand offers convenience and can meet most uses. Fast, convenient and serviceable for most of what we do on our networks. Essential for mobile devices, Wi-Fi may match up when you find it too tricky to install permanent, remotely run cable to your chosen site. And when so many of us are renting, running cables around homes may prove a bugbear for

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

landlords. But for fixed location desktop PCs or servers, it’s wired Ethernet every time – serving up a consistently reliable connection.

HARD FACTS

If you opt for cable, the Telecommunications Industry Association standard ISO/IEC 11801 is your guide for both mandatory and advisory criteria covering Cat 3, 5e (enhanced) 6 and 6a (augmented) cabling and components. Mandatory criteria specify the minimum acceptable requirements for protection, performance, administration and compatibility.

ORIGINS

Ethernet is today’s most common hardwired network standard. First developed by the Xerox Corporation in the 1970s as a coaxial cable-based system for local area networks

/Essentialinstall

(LANs) likely to experience mostly sporadic but occasionally heavy activity. The resulting Ethernet Version 1 specification formed the backbone for the first IEEE 802.3 standard for local networks or LANs, which was approved in 1983, and finally published as an official standard in 1985. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.3 standard published in 1985 has evolved into network node and interconnecting media main elements. Network nodes process data run over the Ethernet cable network and are either computers or elements such as switches, routers and hubs but can also include printers and security cameras that need network access. FS Cables can help ensure you comply fully with stated specifications and advise you on the right cable categories.

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

STAYING ON TOP OF IT ALL Kevan Sproston, experienced AV specialist and Product Sales Manager for Kordz, examines the increasing demand placed on infrastructure. Cables are not likely to be the first thing that jumps to mind when looking at a new and exciting AV project, after all it’s usually the experience we deliver to clients that as an industry we get excited about. Cabling is often the unsung hero of every professional audio-visual installation, it’s the backbone that we hang all the technology on. It goes without saying that as technology advances, the infrastructure needs to keep up, if not stay ahead of the equipment that we’re installing. In fact, the smart move in our industry has always been to install over specified infrastructure, this makes upselling existing projects a cinch. This approach is not only a great sales tool, it also helps protect the profitability of our installations. With sufficient headroom we can be confident that the equipment we installed today will still be working just the way we installed it tomorrow. After all, making a service call as result of poor infrastructure choices will result in poor client relations and poor profits to match. Right now, it’s imperative to make sure you keep on top the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements. When it comes to our immediate challenges, I see three key areas where we need to stay on top of our cable game; wireless, high-resolution video and device interoperability.

34 MARCH 2022

What has wireless got to do with cables you may wonder? Well, whilst wireless technology is widely promoted to consumers as liberating devices, making connectivity easier and increasing installation flexibility, there is a heavy price to pay with reliability and security. Ever increasing cyber security concerns, using wired networking solutions where appropriate is a clear winner. Hacking a wired network is far from impossible but we’re not transmitting our potentially precious data into the air on radio waves, which are in relative terms easier to intercept. Staying ahead of bandwidth issues should not be an alien concept

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

For the sake of network reliability, a wired connection can rarely be beaten, even more so in radio congested urban locations where every ISP Wi-Fi router slogs it out in a daily battle with its neighbours. For non-critical applications WiFi is great. Of course, we can support Wi-Fi with our reliable cable infrastructure as we move into an ever-increasing world of power ethernet to support wireless access points, security cameras, door intercoms and the like. The topic of category cabling which forms much of our essential AV infrastructure is as many who have met me will know, is something very close to my heart. The topic of getting category cabling installed right and tested could easily make a whole article. I believe it’s of fundamental importance to our industry as it grows. The strive for higher and higher video resolutions means data rates are going through

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

the roof. To deliver 8K video were going to need to be shifting up to a massive 48Gbps. To put that number into some sort of context, the UK average broadband speed is currently around 50Mbps, to deliver full 8K video were going to be needed to push around 960 times as much data down a HDMI cable to TVs and projectors that we’re installing. With this amount of data involved, it’s instantly a higher stakes game. Pick the wrong cables and it could be a game of ‘plug and pray’. Fortunately, the HDMI organisation can help take the guess work out with Ultra High Speed cable choices and their certification scheme as highlighted with the hologram and QR code on certified cables.

KEEP TALKING

Finally, device interoperability has, and frankly always will be the bane of every AV installer’s life. There are some simple steps that will help make sure that you are giving yourself the best chance with every install. Product headroom - make sure you always install headroom with any infrastructure project, I honestly can’t stress this enough. New devices and protocols spill on to the market every day, usually tagged with the associated marketing message, bigger, faster, smarter, better. It’s an odds-on bet that the promise to do more for the user will mean that there’s more data that needs to be moved faster. Another interoperability trend to watch is the slow demise of the separate set top box. TVs are now the hub of many services with a

/Essentialinstall

multitude of built in apps. The TV has become slightly confused as it acts as both a source and a sink. The challenge is to get the sound out when it’s in source mode to sound bars and AV receivers to deliver an audio experience which goes well beyond the tinny built in TV speakers. It’s now the Audio Return Channel (ARC) on HDMI and now eARC (e for enhanced) that delivers the audio information. In short, the main benefit of eARC is surround sound from the TV. In many installs, built in ‘Smart’ TV apps will be used by clients for a less cluttered life so eARC will become your friend. It’s worth noting that some of the HMDI cables drop eARC support, especially over long lengths. In conclusion, cabling infrastructure tends to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Will we see a jump to fibre optics anytime soon? Possibly at some point, there are plenty of people that have installed dark fibre into projects, it’s a gamble as the industry might not adopt that particular fibre, as we may go multimode or single mode depending on the application. There are plenty of HDMI cables right now that use optical technology to overcome distance limitations, but they’re all end to end solutions. Category cabling is certainly here to stay as it’s been so widely adopted for networks with various protocols delivering AV data or point to point solutions such as HDBaseT etc. HDBaseT 3.0 is on its way but that’s very much a story for another day.

THIS MONTH’S ESSENTIAL SUPPLEMENT

ESSENTIAL SECURITY

SAFE AS HOUSES Non-Chinese

Steve Liddiard, CEO at Merit LILIN UK, tackles some of the key questions facing the security sector.

FCC

What are the main concerns and types of solutions that are most in demand in the residential security sector?

NDAA Cyber-Secure

Specified

The main concern that we see when helping to specify residential security systems is for homeowners protecting their assets- they want to be kept fully in the loop and know what is always happening at their home. This is especially prevalent now that the UK is moving towards a hybrid working structure, they want to be able to check on deliveries or people visiting the property whilst they are away. In line with this, we’ve seen the last year bring more requests for smarter security systems- with the use of limited AI functions becoming more commonplace. Including features such as human or vehicle detection in a surveillance system reduces any false motion alarms and ensures that any push notifications received by the client are valid. This year we’ve seen an increase in concern over the security of the system itself- an US influence as the NDAA and FCC policies are now emerging in both the UK and EU markets. Clients want to know that their system is protected against any cyber-attacks and that their footage is kept private. The recently publicised human rights issues currently occurring in China have led to a lot of anti-China sentiment, with clients wanting to know more about the manufacturers, their policies, ethics, and attitudes to preventing unregulated access to products within their homes.

01908 443 660

Are security systems now just a part of the smart home system or do they still stand alone in a practical sense?

contact@LILIN.uk

We’ve always found that customers want their security systems integrated where possible,

42 MARCH 2022

which is why we worked with all leading home automation platforms to make drivers that enable this. An integrated security system is easier for the client to use, with only one app or remote needed to control all aspects of their smart home- TV, AV, lighting, and security. This also makes it easier for them to take precautionary actions, for example, remotely turning lights on or off if they receive an alert that someone is at the house - or just show off their homes to friends! With AI becoming more accessible, automated processes are increasingly being added to elevate the smart home experience. It doesn’t take much to recognise a car and have this trigger the kettleor the hot tub! to turn on in anticipation of the client returning home. This can be easily achieved with only a standalone LPR (License Plate Recognition) camera within the home automation system, providing the client with a ‘wow factor’ that welcomes them home.

What are some of the most cuttingedge developments of recent times in this sector? Integration with third party smart home devicesusing a separate detection system to work in conjunction with the security system to reduce false positive alarms. The increase in AI usage has allowed us to fine tune this even more, providing a wealth of new integration opportunities, evolving from standard LPR to incorporate car make/model recognition. There has also been an increased investment in the networking infrastructure and in maintaining the security of the properties security system.

SECURITY MEASURES Investments in residential AV are driving the need for security services and creating a channel of untapped growth for installers. Art Walker, CEO, Auton Motorized Systems, explains. A quick look at the headlines reveals that home security in all forms has become an essential element. While what could happen is not something anyone really wants to consider, being informed and prepared is the best way forward. For residential installers, the security market represents an untapped channel of growth where they already have a solid and trusted relationship with their clients and industry data is backing this up. According to the AVIXA 2020 AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) report, the fastest-growing market for AV solutions is security, surveillance, and life safety, with an 11.4% compound annual growth rate percent. Many residential AV trends are at play here.

MORE AV INVESTMENTS AT HOME CREATING THE NEED FOR SECURITY

01908 443 660 contact@LILIN.uk 44 MARCH 2022

Due to the pandemic and the transition to working from home (WFH), homeowners are eager to invest in their lives and workspaces, which includes the installation (and protection) of new AV technology. On the work front, homeowners want more professional, high-quality conferencing and collaboration systems (equipment normally used only in the office)to stay as productive. In

the past, h consumer-level equipment has met the temporary and occasional WFH requirements, these components often don’t stand up in quality or longevity for permanent home offices that are now being used daily. The consequence of people spending greater amounts of time at home has not only emphasised the importance of professional quality conferencing and collaboration systems but also other systems that contribute to a more enjoyable living experience. In fact, sales in high-end displays and projectors spiked when movie theaters closed. Audiophiles, unable to attend live music events, subscribed in greater numbers to live music streaming services. In turn, they sought out the dynamic sound systems, both multiroom audio systems and high-fidelity pro audio loudspeakers, capable of recreating a concert experience in the home. The final and probably the strongest trend is that of smart home automation. For years smart home systems have been steadily gathering steam, with only a small slow down caused by the pandemic. Reports from ABI Research suggests the smart home market will be worth $317 billion by 2026, representing an additional 5% of growth over pre-COVID-19 forecasts.

ESSENTIAL SECURITY

BUILDING OUT SECURITY SERVICES

As result of these AV trends there are now more high-end devices and equipment in homes than ever before, driving a greater need for smart security solutions. This opens the conversation to possibilities in the home to help keep new and often expensive AV assets safe and secure. While DIY security solutions have become de rigueur, there’s a new urgency for solutions that make it easier for users to control, manage, and monitor the influx of devices now under their roof. They want access to live camera feeds. They want to be able to unlock and lock their doors remotely. They want to be able to turn on outdoor lighting and pull down the shades. How do they want to do this? The days of independently going to each device, whether via individual apps cluttering their mobile device or physically, are long gone. Homeowners have enough on their plate to manage every day without this level of oversight that these new devices require. They want the convenience of completing these tasks from one app or from the home’s control touch panel. Or better yet, have a home automation system capable of doing performing some of these tasks automatically for them. With security offered as part of the residential services being offered by installers, it can more deeply integrate with their AV systems. For homeowners, the benefit comes in the form of using one ecosystem to control, manage, and protect their home. Plus, they only need to go to

one service provider — whom they already value and trust. Consider on-premises security options. There is growing interest and investments being made in luxury AV concealment offerings such as motorised display and projector lifts or motorised sliding panels. These solutions are one of the most innovative and unforgettable ways to assimilate style, security, and technology. AV concealment combined with control solutions can be a onetwo punch for protecting state-of-the-art AV. An above ceiling or under-floor lift, for example, can safely hide a high-end projector or display from view even outside, where homeowners are heavily investing. Partner with motorised lift manufacturers that can customise a solution to suit the requirements of any project and programmed with a keypad code or tied into the home automation system. These solutions need to be built to not only fit the space of where they’re being installed, but also equipped with the motorised lift with the weight capacity the display or other equipment. The result is an unforgettable experience that is appreciated by the most discerning clients. How can integrators take advantage of these opportunities? Talk to the client about all the options available to them when, for example, they have sought to install a new outdoor display that glides effortlessly out of the ground that’s connected to the outdoor multizone audio system and controlled from their phone. Indeed, that’s an investment they’re going to want eyes on.

TOGETHER FOR CINEMA

INCREASING SUPPORT Chris Pinder calls on industry support to raise £25,000 for Together For Cinema. A special announcement this month on taking TFC to a new level of support. Chris Pinder from HDANYWHERE and OneAV is taking on the legendary Marathon des Sables - a gruelling, 250km multi-stage endurance race in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments, the Sahara, to support the wonderful and very worthy cause, Together For Cinema (TFC). Chris is actively seeking backing from across the industry for the race and would welcome support from colleagues, partners and even his rivals in business to come together and help him reach his target of £25,000. “I’m fundraising for TFC by taking part in the Marathon Des Sables in March,” says Chris. “Known as ‘the toughest footrace on earth.’ I’ll be running the equivalent of six marathons over six days in more than 50C heat in the Sahara Desert, carrying everything I need on my back.” Chris adds, “I want to wear as many logos from industry brands (yes, even competitors!) as I can fit on my clothing and rucksack to help raise as much money as I can. I just really want to help TFC rollout special cinemas to as many children’s hospices and respite centres as possible. Because I believe that places where children are going to spend some poorly days… possibly even their final days… should be as wonderful and as perfect as we can make them! “Whether that’s snuggling down with parents to watch their favourite movie, or cheering on their favourite team - thanks to TFC thousands of children with life-limiting conditions, plus their families and carers get to enjoy the

escapism of an awesome big screen cinema in a safe environment.” “The challenge that Chris has undertaken is quite simply enormous,” adds Together For Cinema’s Ian Morrish. “To go from an occasional jogger to an extreme marathon athlete in six months is incredible. And, to do all this to support Together For Cinema and help give back to our community is amazing. Together For Cinema is an AV industry good cause enterprise (soon to become a registered charity) whose main focus is to design and install home cinema rooms in children’s hospices and other deserving venues across the UK. Chris will play a huge part in making sure we deliver six more cinema rooms to children’s hospices in the UK. “He will see the very real difference that he has made to the children, their families, their carers and the staff at these very special places in the coming months and the huge difference that he will make. I am in awe of what he is doing!” The race will take place from March 27 –April 2, 2022. SMART THINKING

SUPERCALIBRATIONS FUSS-FREE SING THE PRAISES OF MOUNTS DIRAC LIVE Dirac Live room correction means happier clients for home audio argues integrator Supercalibrations.

Black Series’ TV mounts, are so well conceived the TV is usually up on the wall within 30 minutes.

Dallas Dingle has specialised in high-end home audio (as a hobby and a profession) for more than 40 years. Founder of St. Paul, Minn.-based Supercalibrations, Dallas has done it all, from building his own loudspeakers, to home cinema installations, to commercial work. Supercalibrations was also a founding member of CEDIA. And in all those years, Dallas says one challenge has remained the same. “Trying to get speakers to sound like they’re supposed to in a room has always been a quagmire,” he says. “Even in my own home, I’ve been willing to put up whatever acoustical treatments it takes. There were times I still couldn’t quite get the sound I wanted.” That changed when Dallas discovered Dirac Live. Now he doesn’t consider a job finished until he’s calibrated a client’s listening space using Dirac Live. “Even in dedicated rooms built for listening to music or watching movies,” Dallas says. “Because in reality, 99% of rooms where you put speakers— even finely tuned environments with acoustic treatments—the room’s going to affect the sound. But even there, Dirac Live makes a huge difference. It can correct for a room with poor acoustics, or it can be used as that final tool for taking a room

that already sounds pretty good and turning it into something even better.” Dirac Live achieves this by using algorithms to analyse and reduce the sound colorations introduced by a room. It’s tunable to the listener’s preference and because installers can run it on a laptop, they enjoy the flexibility of having speakers in one room and the receiver in another. “In our business, we also make our own speakers, and we don’t have to worry about finetuning our speaker sound quite so much,” Dallas explains. “Because with Dirac Live overlaid on top, you’re going to get a great result.”

GREAT MUSIC IN CHALLENGING SPACES

Over the years, Dallas has seen what many other installers have seen: the design of residential spaces that actually hinders audio performance. Even in dedicated home cinemas, Dallas and his technicians use Dirac Live to optimise the sound, not unlike the growing number of professional producers and musicians who use the solution in studios to ensure they hear their mix accurately, without room impact.

SMART THINKING “Many times, rooms are geometrically challenging, or too small for the sound system, or they’ve been designed with in-wall and in-ceiling speakers with angled drivers for that discreet installation,” Dallas says. “At some point, though, it becomes a matter of form over function.” But in Dallas’ experience, the residential clients who want beautiful interior spaces are the same people who love their music collection and want to experience it optimally in their homes. “They put in really good sound systems because the rest of the house is so nice,” he says. One Supercalibrations client, a prominent psychologist had been working with Dallas’s team for years. He’d had them build a media room on the home’s lower level and was using a couple of channels from one of its amplifiers to drive a prized pair of Bowers & Wilkins speakers on the main floor. When Dallas was at the house upgrading the media room, he suggested refinements upstairs, too, including an NAD M10 streaming amplifier featuring Dirac Live. “He also had a subwoofer built into the wall in that space that was rattling too much, so we replaced that,” Dallas says. The goal was to significantly upgrade the audio experience in the area where the family entertained most—a challenging, open space that spanned the kitchen and family room. With Dirac Live running on the NAD M10, Dallas used a miniDSP UMIK-2 microphone to measure the audio system and room at multiple key spots throughout the entire listening area to account for guests who might stand when visiting or sit on high stools as they dined and socialised. “The Dirac Live algorithm allows for measuring and correction over a wide space, so you get an enhanced sound experience in a bigger space, which is perfect for rooms like this,” Dallas says. With the calibration settings saved to the NAD M10, it was time to hear the result. “It was pretty profound,” says Dr. Jefferey Hill, PsyD, of the new Dirac Live-optimised system Supercalibrations installed. “I sat with Dallas to listen, and the sound just came to life all around us.”

A self-identified audiophile, Jefferey’s musical tastes span everything from classical music to 90s hip-hop. When he’s relaxing with his new system, though, Jefferey says Boz Scaggs really shows it off. “Ultimately, if I was going to spend the money on this custom music setup, why not go the distance and have it calibrated and optimised?” he says. “It’s part of the value-add and makes a huge difference.” Dallas uses Dirac Live to optimise multichannel home cinema systems, too. Recently, when upgrading a client’s home cinema, Supercalibrations added four in-ceiling PSB speakers to an existing five-channel design and used Dirac Live, which comes with the system’s new NAD M17 processor, to optimize the sound. In another space, Dallas’s team built custom loudspeakers and left them unfinished because they would be placed behind a fabric wall. With the money saved on finishing, Supercalibrations installed an NAD M17 and NAD M27 amplifier and used Dirac Live to get the sound exactly right. “It was a basement area with a built-in cabinet and some empty space. We built custom woofers and three front channels,” Dallas says. “Again, Dirac Live made a huge difference. In fact, it’s hard for me to think of a situation where Dirac didn’t improve the sound in whatever room we used it.” That includes his own home. Having discovered Dirac Live, Dallas bought himself a miniDSP DDRC24 room correction processor. The compact, affordable unit, powered by Dirac Live Room Correction, gets a regular workout. “I’ve used Dirac Live probably 50 times in my home because I’m always switching speakers and trying things out,” Dallas says. “When Dirac Live is on, I consistently hear a nicer, smoother bass response than I heard before. In my experience, Dirac Live always makes a difference. If you’re a music lover especially, it’s really hard to do without.” Supercalibrations supercalibrations.com

GAME ON FOR POWERSOFT

Powersoft’s Dynamic Music Distribution (DMD) solution is at the heart of the versatile, userfriendly and cost-effective audio system providing the soundtrack to Kent’s newest sports and entertainment destination. With Dynamic Music Distribution, Powersoft says it offers installers the ability to scale inputs and zones conveniently and efficiently with dynamic routing capabilities embedded on its amplifier platforms. This makes it simple to dynamically route music and other signal sources along with control signals between different zones and across multiple amplifiers – all independently of source location and without the need for a centralised DSP. Two Mezzo 604 ADs (Powersoft’s fourchannel, 600W compact amplifier) are powering the entirety of the 250-capacity Matches Sports Bar, Grill & Social, forming the

56 MARCH 2022

core of a unique hospitality venue, incorporating multiple distinct audio zones and spaces. Tucked away behind the counter, a single 4.3in wall-mounted Powersoft WM Touch screen gives complete control of the entire DMD system, including Mezzo’s embedded dynamic routing capabilities. “By using Powersoft’s Dynamic Music Distribution solution, we were able to keep our design simple all the way through, from designing the project to handing it over to the client,” explains Ashley Bond, managing director of system designer and installer MADE Worldwide. “The client is then left with

a powerful start-to-finish solution from a single industry leading manufacturer, providing them with a safe and secure audio system that’s really going to push through.” Matches Sports Bar – located at Elwick Place in Ashford, Kent, has been a roaring business since it opened with its food and drink, live sports and evening entertainment proving popular with both locals and Eurostar passengers. Jon Shephard, Matches’ owner, says the concept for the venue is to combine “all the best bits of the bars I’ve been to throughout my life, all into one place” to create the “ultimate sports bar experience”.

Powering the Leading Multiroom Audio Ecosystem for Custom Installation

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY With a single four-channel Mezzo amplifier now able to drive up to four independent zones of audio, thanks to Powersoft’s new ArmoníaPlus 2.2 software release, the DMD ecosystem was a strong choice to bring to life Jon’s vision for the venue, with a “tailored sound experience in each individual area”. Jon explains, “For example, we have three semi-private self-pour beer areas. In those areas, whilst customers want to be able to hear the experience, the volume still allows them to have a conversation with others across the table. We also have other semi-private areas, such as the snug and the private room, where customers are all-encapsulated in high-quality, 3D surround sound. “In the main bar area, we wanted a system where customers could really feel like they’re in the stadium watching the match live. However, once that match is finished and we turn the [TV] sound off, we want to get the music pumping – to turn it up loud and have no loss in quality with regards to the audio. And believe me, if you come here on a Friday and Saturday night, you’ll definitely experience that.”

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

THE POWER The two Powersoft Mezzo amplifiers are responsible for managing the audio throughout Matches, including in the corridor and washrooms. Powersoft’s UK distributor, CUK Audio, supplied MADE with the Mezzos and WM Touch, as well as the AUDAC loudspeakers (ATEO wallmounted speakers, CIRA ceiling speakers, and BASO10 and NOBA8 subwoofers) the amplifiers power. Installed AV channel manager, Steve Barton, says multiple output options like those on the Mezzo 604 AD were essential for a venue like Matches, where a single amplifier is able to power both Lo- and Hi-Z loudspeakers. “DMD was key here,” comments Steve, “because it provides a really cost-effective and stylish way of routing audio around venues like this. Here, we need small amounts of power going to smaller zones, like the toilets or corridors, and a large amount of power to provide high-quality, pumping audio to get the atmosphere going in the bar area. This is where the Mezzo amplifier running the Dynamic Music Distribution system really shines.

MARCH 2022 59

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY

“The Powersoft amps have up to four channels running 600W, with full power sharing across all the channels. And the key here is that they can do low impedance and a 100V line on the same amplifier, all using the integral DSP – in a half RU space – so you can fit a heck of a lot of processing power in a really, really tiny space.” Ashley adds, “One of the challenges on this project for us was to keep everything nice and tight with a small-rack install. Because the Mezzos are so small in the rack, we were able to fit three satellite boxes, and an AUX input, so we could come in and throw [sound] around in different zones and make it easy for the client to use.” Despite its high spec, Powersoft argues that the system is so competitively priced that recommending it to MADE for the Matches project was very straightforward. Steve says, “Dynamic Music Distribution is very easy to justify to integration partners and end users

60 MARCH 2022

because it offers supreme flexibility while being really cost effective. When you look, in terms of money and size, how much power, processing capabilities and content you’re getting out of it, it’s a no-brainer.” Jon says he is, “delighted with the AV system we have in Matches”, which made its public debut ahead of the UEFA Euro 2020 football championships. “The WM Touch system is super user-friendly – we have a control panel behind the bar, which any of our staff can log on to and be able to change the audio in a couple of clicks. Plus, the training [from MADE] only took a minimal amount of time – no more than half an hour – because it’s so simple to use. “The system is basically automated as far as it can be, and that’s based on the fact that we used the Dynamic Music Distribution system by Powersoft. It’s made our lives easier because we know that the customer benefits from a userfriendly system.”

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY In fact, so impressed were the MADE team by the system installed at Matches that the company is already specifying an almost identical system for several upcoming projects. “That’s off the back of how strongly it’s performed at Matches,” Ashley continues. “It’s definitely become our go-to solution for hospitality projects – so much so that we even hold stock of it just to have it when we need it.” Equally important as its equipment’s technical prowess are the people at Powersoft, adds Steve of CUK, which has been distributing the brand in the UK since 2008. “It’s not just about the products – it’s about the relationships, and the guys at Powersoft are fantastic. “They’ve demonstrated time and time again that they’re approachable, personable and flexible, which is exactly what you need in a working relationship. And it’s a rare combination to find a top-level manufacturer that has such fantastic people working for them.” Made Worldwide madeworldwide.co.uk

LET THE LIGHT SHINE WITH VIOLET VIOLET has announced the introduction of the SmartSwitch Lite, 7mm thinner than the current version, with advanced connectivity and smart features. SmartSwitch Lite is a touchscreen control panel that replaces a traditional square light switch providing convenient control over smart lighting and audio systems. Features include a one device, two power supply approach as the device supports both 100-240 V AC and 12-30V DC which means it can either replace a traditional light switch or an existing ‘smart keypad’ powered by extra low voltage wire. This new version also offers a slimmer form factor, requiring a shallower electrical back box, meaning that installation is easier and customers with smaller back boxes can now benefit from what the SmartSwitch Lite has to offer. The unit also offers advanced connectivity with third-party lighting and audio devices over Wi-Fi, SmartSwitch Lite connects with Philips Hue and Sonos out of the box. For advanced users and installers almost any other system that uses HTTP requests can also partner the product providing access to services like Home Assistant and IFTTT with more out-the-box integrations on the way. The product also offers ease of operation, a simple double tap of the screen to play/pause audio or hold it to turn the lights on and off, all without waking it. If more control is required, a single tap wakes the screen and displays the

sleek interface allowing simple scene recall and audio adjustment. So far, VIOLET has had a string of positive reviews on Trustpilot with a rating of 4.6/5.0 and one customer saying, “Really impressed by the Violet smart switch. Works flawlessly with my extensive Philips Hue lighting set up and the recent software update makes this smart switch versatile. Definitely recommended and will purchase again for a few more rooms in the future.” Violet violet-ultra.co.uk

The Crestron Ultimate In-Wall Subwoofer and the Crestron DM NAX Streaming Pre-Amplifier will both play major roles in filling out Crestron’s residential audio solutions, says the maker. When paired with Crestron speakers from the Ultimate or Reference lines, the new Ultimate In-Wall Subwoofer helps create an immersive sound experience with deep, gratifying bass for demanding multiroom audio settings or home cinema applications, says the maker. Crestron adds that the Ultimate In-Wall Subwoofer is made with the highest-quality components as well as paintable grilles for a customisable aesthetic. Installation of each subwoofer is streamlined through an easy-to-use in-wall dogleg mounting system optimised to reduce interference with other elements present in the wall space. The Ultimate Subwoofer pairs natively with DM NAX AoIP technology and Crestron Home ecosystem. The newest addition to the DM NAX line is Crestron’s first pre-amplifier, diversifying the range of choices for homeowners and integrators looking for residential AoIP distribution platforms. Slimmer in form (1RU) but similar in function to the DM NAX Amplifier, the DM NAX 4-Zone

Streaming Pre-Amplifier natively integrates with Crestron Home, is interoperable with AES67, and Dante audio networking. It uses hardwired connections, and requires no custom network architecture or hardware, meaning it can be connected to existing amplifiers in retrofit jobs or new builds. This interoperability and simple design allows integrators to use DM NAX to specify an entire house’s worth of audio systems with a single device. With the flexibility, scalability, and interoperability of DM NAX AoIP, integrators can deliver complete control of the audio environment to users, allowing them to toggle between TV audio, streaming music, podcasts, alarms, doorbells, or paging and intercom usage to any speaker in the house. The Ultimate Subwoofer is shipping from March 23, while the DM NAX 4-Zone Streaming Pre-Amplifier is available for pre-order now

MSE AUDIO LAUNCHES THEATRE SOUND DESIGNER

A new planning platform for home cinemas from MSE Audio

With its extensive catalogue of both active digital bi- and tri-amped systems and passive home theatre speakers, MSE Audio has announced the release of the Theatre Sound Designer. This online tool will enable audio designers to design theatres and media rooms with the right speakers to achieve high performance audio for any given size space, says the company. MSE Audio has hundreds of cinema options available in on-wall, in-wall, Custom Box, and floor standing formats. The theatre designer provides specific product recommendations to guide the integrator through the product selection. “The Theatre Sound Designer is our first step in providing more relevant application-based information to our partners,” says Ken Hecht, vice president of MSE Audio. “Using the Theatre Sound Designer will help our resellers to easily find the right

loudspeakers to meet the installation, performance, and budget objectives of their customers.” Theatre Sound Designer features dARTS digital speakers and PhaseTech CI and PC products. It will soon expand to include Induction Dynamics theatre options. The cinema/media room systems offered include a range of MSE Audio’s many patented and trademarked technologies that includes the dARTS in-room calibration system, the soft dome tweeter, Positive Clamping System, Unicel Acoustic Treatment to minimise sound wave interaction with the wall when using in-wall speakers, Absolute Phase crossovers for broad on axis response, patented Bass Extending technology, and patented RPF Flat Piston and glass fibre drivers. To operate the Theatre Sound Designer, users answer a short series of questions about the cinema space: seating distance from the screen, sound level required, what type of speakers and subs and the number of surround speakers. By selecting the parameters that meets the project requirement, the designer will present the base options for the optimal loudspeaker/subwoofer audio design for the project. MCINTOSH BUILDS FOR THE 8K FUTURE McIntosh has launched the MX180, a future-ready 8K-capable AV Processor with a raft of advanced customisation and processing capabilities. Fully 4K compatible and perfectly prepared for future 8K content, the MX180 supports 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz on all seven of its Ultra High Speed HDMI ports (five inputs and two outputs). Each HDMI port supports: HDCP 2.3; 4:4:4 Colour; Rec. 2020; Dynamic Lip-sync and 3D Video pass-through as well as enhanced features, including: Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM); Quick Frame Transport (QFT); Quick Media Switching (QMS) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Numerous high dynamic range formats are supported, including HDR (static HDR), Dynamic HDR, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision (including low latency). Outputs include 16 balanced audio outputs (enabling 15.1 or 9.1.6 surround sound speaker configurations) and the MX180’s two HDMI outputs can simultaneously output source material to two separate screens, or output different content from two different sources to two separate screens. One HDMI output features both Audio Return Channel (ARC) and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) functionality. Other connections include a suite of digital and analogue inputs and outputs, plus a Moving Magnet phono input. The MX180 is compatible with 3D surround sound formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro,

KARMA-AV SENDS A CABLE TO AUDIOPHILES Karma-AV has introduced the in-akustik Reference LS-404 Micro Air speaker cables to the UK. Inakustic’s ‘Micro Air’ technology aims to minimise the physical filter effect of cables by deploying air as a dielectric to insulate concentric copper conductors, which are helically arranged according to a proprietary design. A thin layer of polyethylene protects the pure copper from oxidation. Accordingly, the new Reference LS-404 Micro Air speaker cable uses air as the insulation surrounding a total of eight concentric copper conductors in a multicore architecture, arranged so that the magnetic fields of the positive and negative conductors overlap and neutralise each other. This specification reduces the inductance of the cable considerably, thereby promoting a faithful transmission of the audio signal over a broad frequency range and with precise timing. Consequently, the LS-404 Micro Air is particularly effective when connecting larger floorstanding loudspeakers. The Reference LS-404 Micro Air is available with BFA bananas or with spades, or as an EasyPlug version. The surfaces of the BFA bananas and the spades are finished with a rhodium coating and are therefore extremely durable. Contact surfaces are manufactured from a single piece to minimise contact resistance.
