o long, Main Street. The Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival has packed up and moved - not far, though. In fact, the 10th edition of this hugely popular downtown event will take place just blocks from the original site, finding a new home at 9th Street and Locust Avenue between the Civic Center Plaza and Old National Events Plaza. One obvious benefit of the change in scenery is PARKING. Patrons will be able to pull into the huge lot off of 9th Street and stroll right into the festival with ease. You simply can't put a price on that - well, admission is $30 at the gate, but you get the idea. Thankfully, though the Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival has switched venues, it will still feature the very best jazz musicians around - LIVE on three stages. And as always, the smooth grooves will go down even smoother with samplings from some fantastic wineries (and one brewery) that produce the sorts of adult beverages that make you truly appreciate being 21 and over. Plus, you can enjoy culinary delights from the tri-state's most talked-about restaurants - everything from BBQ and gourmet pizzas to Greek and Japanese cuisine. Don't miss out on downtown Evansville's favorite musical festival!

KANSAS V IC TO RY T H E AT R E | OCT OB ER 14 | 8 P. M.
Guitarist Rich Williams on loving the rock & roll lifestyle, The Prelude Implicit, moving forward and more
T
here are few more signature moments in rock & roll than the opening vocal harmonies of "Carry On Wayward Son." In just 15 short seconds, Kansas summed up the sound of the mid-70s and turned their career around, ultimately going multi-platinum with the release of Leftoverture - a progressive rock masterpiece that featured the aforementioned track plus such intricate pieces as "Miracles Out of Nowhere" and "The Wall." 40 years on, the album continues to resonate while "Carry On..." has achieved near mythological status thanks to the show Supernatural and countless plays on classic rock radio. Still, Kansas has not been resting on its musical laurels. After original vocalist Steve Walsh retired in 2014, the band quickly acquired Chicagoan Ronnie Platt to fill the void; they also added guitarist Zak Rizvi and a full-time keyboardist in David Manion. Inspired by the renewed energy and chemistry, original members Rich Williams (guitar) and Phil Ehart (drums) began plotting the first new Kansas album in over 15 years. And in a case of perfect timing, 2016's critically-acclaimed The Prelude Implicit appeared right on the
leftoverture 40TH anniversary tour
heels of the 40th anniversary of Leftoverture - creative bookends of sorts that set the stage for a tour that has surpassed all expectations and signaled a virtual rebirth for the band. According to Williams, Kansas is just getting started. You seem to thoroughly enjoy being in a band - even after 45 years. What first drew you in? It was just something about that lifestyle that intrigued me. And then I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Topeka, Kansas, like the rest of the world, ignited. Everybody I knew was in a band. There was a garage band on every block. Even in Life magazine, there was an article on Topeka and this phenomenon there were more garage bands there per capita than anywhere on Earth. So, we kind of grew out of that. It was just the love of being on a team and having fun making music. It's 45 years later, and here we are. Personally, I've never lost the love of doing this. I signed up for everything about it - the travel, the ups and downs, the good times, the people leaving, the new people coming in. All of that is part of being in a band - and I'm used to it.

That's kind of my normal. So, it's another day in Kansas (laughs). The more I do it, the more I go from appreciating it to total gratitude for the life that I have and what I get to do. And once you get to that point, it's really the icing on the cake. Did you feel any apprehension about the future of the band when original vocalist Steve Walsh called it quits a few years ago? Of course we were sad about it, but we've been through change before. The one thing I know that I can count on in life is change. What's weird is that it's the thing that we all struggle with the most - what we fear the most. But I've been through so much of it in my life that now I know that it's completely normal. Steve fought in the trenches with us for years, but it was time for him to retire. He lost the will to do it and his voice was failing. He didn't want to do it anymore, and I'm glad he went out on his terms. And so it was like, 'Ok what's the next step?' Phil and I said thanks to Steve and boom, we made the move. With a great new album recorded in 2016, it's interesting that you decided to tour Leftoverture at that moment - was that the

plan from the beginning? There had been talk before about doing a Point of Know Return [1977 album featuring "Dust in the Wind"] tour, a Leftoverture tour before. And it was like, 'Nah, I don't want to do that.' But with this band, suddenly we have seven guys that want to be here, that love doing this. In fact, we're working on a new album now - I just came from the car because last night I got sent to me disc one of the mastered Leftoverture tour which we're releasing this year - everything but the acoustic set, basically. I literally walked in the door when the phone rang, because I'm down in the car listening to the disc. So, this band is moving at a rapid pace forward. We're not looking back - these are the good old days. The Prelude Implicit has been received ecstatically by your fans - it sounds like a true Kansas album despite the lineup changes. How did you pull it off? Well, there was a will to do it. There was a little bit of anticipation, because, you know, Kerry [Livgren] isn't writing, Steve [Walsh] isn't writing. Previously, that's how it was done. Wanting to do a record and having the ability are two different things. Fortunately, what the record company wanted was a Kansas record - they weren't looking for pop hits. I know what a Kansas song is - and I know what one isn't. My job ... the way I come at a project is more from not knowing so much what we are but what we aren't. And weeding it out in that fashion. I'll hear something and decide that it has promise - but maybe we need to add something - a middle, a beginning. You start tweaking it to turn it into something that sounds like Kansas. We didn't want to make a record that sounded like a whole new band with a whole new sound - Kansas part two. We wanted it to be as quintessentially Kansas as we could that was the goal. But we didn't want to repeat ourselves, either. That's where Zak Rizvi came in. Zak was a guy that we had worked with for several years as an engineer on a lot of projects. So when Phil and I brought him in on the project and started working on material, we had no idea what a fantastic songwriter he is. He was so in tune with the early writing styles of Kerry. It was like, 'this guy's got to be in the band.' Do you still get the same rush from performing after all these years? Let me tell you, there is no feeling on Earth like stepping up to the side of the stage - I'm tuning my guitar, the lights are out. And all of a sudden I hear "two minutes to show time, two minutes to show time." The opening music starts and I step on stage... there is nothing in the world like that moment - nothing that will every replace that. To this day, every night that we do it gives me butterflies in the stomach. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

hits over a 23 year career numbers that will likely never be seen again in Major League Baseball. Yes, folks, that's why Pete Rose is the man. Or the "Hit King," more accurately. The self-described "most aggressive player of all time" has never been shy about sharing his thoughts and opinions on any subject, especially when it comes to baseball. And that's the way we like it, because Rose's perspective on the National Pastime makes for great storytelling. As the Cincinnati native says with typical bluntness, "sometimes I make people laugh, sometimes I make them cry." That's exactly what Rose has been doing in front of over-flowing crowds in cities across the country: talking openly and honestly about his incredible journey in the major leagues - from the early days with the Reds on through to his trade to the Phillies and Expos and eventual return to the Reds as a player/manager. "If you're a baseball fan, you'll enjoy it. If you're a Pete Rose fan, you'll enjoy it even more," Rose says. "I talk about all the great players that I've played with and

against - it's a well put together show backed with video productions." Rose currently spends most of his time in Las Vegas where he signs autographs, takes pics and chats with fans 20 days a month for over four hours at a stretch. "I take my time with everyone - that's what an appearance is all about," he explains. "My philosophy is that if you piss one person off, you ruin the whole appearance. We want everybody to go home with a good taste in their mouth." Rose was kind enough to speak with News4U ahead of his appearance at RiverPark Center. What accounted for your turnaround hittingwise in the early days of your career? It's very simple - I just hadn't learned how to hit during those first two years in the big leagues. I learned how to become a hitter when I went to Venezuela to play winter ball after my second year. I grew up. My first three years in the National League, Sandy Koufax struck out over 1000 guys. When you're a young kid and have only spent two years in the minor leagues and all of a sudden you're facing [Bob] Gibson, [Juan] Marichal, [Don] Drysdale - all these great pitchers - you've got to know how to hit, how to approach it. But I didn't just learn how to hit, I learned about the pitchers, too - there's something to that. It takes time to figure out the guys you're facing. There's a focus on statistics in baseball right now. Do you think it's over-complicating
September 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
the game - keeping in mind that the Cubs won the World Series last year by reportedly relying on stats? It wouldn't work for me. I want to know if a guy has enthusiasm. Is he aggressive? Does he have a big heart? Those are the god-given talents that often go unnoticed by today's socalled experts that are college graduates with their ties on and have never played the game of baseball. I mean, obviously, the statistical analysis worked for the Cubs last year - but how come it's not working this year? Same team. If there was a draft tomorrow, and I was a senior in high school, I wouldn't have gotten drafted. And I got more hits than anybody in the history of baseball and won more games than anybody in the history of baseball. But I had a big heart and the work ethic and I was the most aggressive player of all time. Speaking of work ethic, there's a great story about your dad waiting for you after a particular game... The first thing that I always did when I got to the Cincinnati ballpark was put four tickets aside for Pete Rose, Sr. And he never waited after the game because he had to get up and go to work at a bank - catch the bus at 8:15 a.m. One particular night, he was waiting after the game by my car. And I immediately asked, 'Are you all right, is mom all right?' And he said, 'Let me ask you something, son. That third time you were up to bat tonight when you had a guy on third and two outs and you hit that ground ball to the second baseman? Did you run hard to first when you hit that

ball?' And I thought about it and said, 'No, I guess I didn't.' He said, 'Don't embarrass me in this town like that.' And this was after I won the '68 and '69 batting titles. So when you're getting scrutinized that closely, you kind of have an idea of what you're doing or what you're trying to accomplish. Is there anything you would change about today's game? Personally, I don't like all the rule changes. I don't like the fact that you can't pitch inside; I don't like the fact that these guys that go to bat are wearing more armor than the Humvees in Iraq; you can't break up a double play; you can't collide with a catcher. I like the way baseball was played in the old days. Do current players reach out to you for advice? I get a lot of calls and texts from players - but I don't get them from players when they're doing good. They want me to watch them when they're doing poorly - maybe I'll see something that their batting coach doesn't see. That's just the way it is. I'm always looking to help big league baseball players become better, always trying to help young players become better. You can't believe how many young players - 14 and under - come through my autograph line in Vegas. We try to create an experience for them. Final question: When will the Reds get better? They've got a pretty good offense if you want to know the truth. They're last in pitching, but they're in the middle of the pack offensively - close to the top in home runs. So, I'm not worried about their offense, but you just can't go out and win 7-6 or 9-8 every time you play. The bullpen is doing ok, but the starters... I knew they were going to run out of gas. And when your bullpen gets worn out in April, May and June, what are you going to do in August and September? You're in trouble. But the Cincinnati fans don't want to hear about "rebuilding." But look at the Houston Astros. Three years ago, they were one of the worst teams in the American League. Now they've got the best record, because they added the key spots in their order. The guy that runs the team went out and put the puzzle together. And they've got a lot of good young players down there. That's what it takes. MITCH RYDER & THE DETROIT WHEELS LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE | SEPTEMBER 30 | 6:30 p.M.
Legendary R&B Hall of Famer on singular voices, tackling a memoir, writing a musical and more
F
rom Paul McCartney to former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, the greatest musicians of the last fifty years continue to acknowledge the musical impact of 60s icon Mitch Ryder (Hollywood, too - see 2000's High Fidelity starring John Cusack, for example). The Michigan-born singer/ songwriter blazed a trail of unhinged, Motown-inspired rhythm & blues throughout that remarkable decade, scoring such soul-churning hits as "Jenny Take a Ride" and "Devil with a Blue Dress On," the latter inspiring the title of Ryder's recent awardwinning memoir. And yet, he seemingly disappeared for long stretches in America, only to re-emerge via the excellent John Mellencamp-produced Never Kick a Sleeping Dog in 1983 and a series of critically-acclaimed follow-ups. For the last 15 years, however, Ryder has focused his career overseas - particularly in Germany - releasing a number of well-received albums that will hopefully see the light of day here in due time. Thankfully, Ryder has not kept a low profile in the States on the live front, regularly performing at festivals and theatres. And yes, he still possesses the same raw, striking vocal presence that virtually jumped out of radios back in the day. Currently hard at work on a musical and other creative projects, the recent R&B Hall of Fame inductee is set to bring the 2017 Lincoln Amphitheatre summer concert series to a climactic conclusion on September 30.
18 |
What did the R&B Hall of Fame induction mean to you, especially considering the stature of your fellow inductees - Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, James Brown (R.I.P.)? On a personal level, it was very, very gratifying. Even beyond that, so much of my adoration and involvement and dissection of music was all centered around rhythm & blues. All these years, a lot of people have been wondering, 'Why aren't these guys [Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels] in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?' That was never really a question in my mind - it was always about this other category that I managed to fall into. So, I was very pleased. And yes, it was really exclusive company. I know most of the people that were inducted - I mean, not the dead ones...well, maybe I do (laughs). We live in an age where stars like Justin Bieber write memoirs before they've learned how to drive. But you had over five wild decades in rock & roll to tackle with Devils & Blue Dresses. When I was given the opportunity to do it, the first thing I did was reject a ghostwriter. I mean, I flunked English back in high school - but it was just a question of what I have learned about the English language and my love of words? Because when you write lyrics you have to be in love with words. I just kept having to tell myself what my mother told me: always tell the truth because then you don't have to spend your life defending
September 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
something you can't back up. I took my time on it [the book]. The final draft was the third draft. And it had been an ongoing project for many, many years. But ultimately, I put two and a half years of concentration on it and then all these awards started to come my way, and I'm going, 'Holy cow!' I took it as a challenge and it worked out. And it was very rewarding. At the height of your success in the 60s and into the early 70s, the biggest stars of the era were dropping like flies - Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison, Brian Jones. How did you react at the time? I was friends with all of them. I handled it the same way I handled declining fame... now I had my devils, for sure. Feeling sorry for myself - having things taken away from me either justly or unjustly. So I went through a drink and drug period. But I realized early on enough that I was able to save my faculties and my body by stopping that behavior. And so I'm still around - and they're not.
"always tell the truth because then you don't have to spend your life defending something you can't back up" You have one of those singular voices that is unmistakable. Is that what attracts you to artists that you admire? That was the beauty of being inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame. All of those voices - I'm really attracted to voices that will live forever. There's nobody that can sing like Nat King Cole or Jackie Wilson or Smokey Robinson. You hear these voices - so beautiful and unique that they are kind of timeless. People have told me that I have one of those types of voices - I never really thought of it as unique. The one I remember best is how I confused Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I think his quote was "I don't know too much about Mitch Ryder, but it's that voice..." He was pondering that. That seemed to be what he gravitated to. Given the quality of their vocals and their harmonies, I was going, 'wow - that's pretty cool.' Writing a musical seems like a particularly challenging project. Where are you in the process? The working title of the musical is "Hide Your Love Away." It's got nothing to do with me or my memoir - it's an original piece of work that I wrote just for the musical. We just need to finish up the music this year and then get some collaboration and find a skilled playwright that can transform the novel that I wrote along with the music into a play format. Then after that we'll take it and shop it. It's been a challenge for sure, but here's what I like about challenges: people can tell you that you can't do something, but if you try and you succeed, you can. You've continued to put out great music over the years - amazing songs like "Freezin' in Hell" off How I Spent My Vacation, for instance. Is it enough for you to put out new material or do you want chart success, too? That's all I really ever wanted [to put out new material]. Because when I realized that I wasn't going to be the golden boy that they [the music industry] look for every year, that new piece of flesh that they can market and control, I just started working towards my art and have been very consistent on that. I just wanted to have a documentation of my growth as an artist - that's the whole purpose. It's very self-serving but I'm really the only one that needs to be pleased at this point - other than my live performances. I'm the only person that has to really like what I do. If you have responsibilities, you have to guard those and take care of them. I've got to continue to earn an income and at the same time, try not to compromise my dream. Created back in 2011 by Carol (Ubelhor) Troesch, this FREE event will feature over 20 rock and country acts on two stages plus a beer garden sponsored by the St. Meinrad Legion Post #366, musician's swap meet/ flea market (new this year!), live animal show, children's activities and more. Proceeds go to support the St. Meinrad Town Museum. Troesch is rightly proud of just how far the festival has come and what it means to the community. It is my hope that the funds raised will eventually help to create a permanent display and the continued preservation of town memorabilia and historical pieces." Among the many talented performers scheduled for this year's event is Timmy Dunn, an up and coming country singer from western Kentucky (profiled in the May 2017 issue of News4U). The Henderson native has been on a serious roll ever since the release of "Kentucky Grown," a killer single with a major hook that has received airplay all over the U.S. and abroad. It's no wonder that St. Meinrad organizers were determined to get Dunn involved. "They actually came out to one of our shows in Louisville, got to talking to me and said they would love to have us - thought we would really go over well," he explains. "And then I found out that the event is more of a fundraiser, and I always enjoy doing that kind of

thing. If we can financially do it, we do Timmy Dunn it." Currently working with different promoters, Dunn is in the process of booking a spring, summer and fall tour with stops based on download sales and YouTube views. His future plans also include a tour of the United Kingdom where songs like "Kentucky Grown" have really struck a chord with country music fans. Another highly-anticipated performer at this year's event is Angel Rhodes (recently named one of News4U's 2017 "20 40 & Under" influencers), lead singer of the very popular blues-rock band Deja Blu 5. A familiar face at community benefits and area music festivals, she's developed into an in-demand solo acoustic act, too, able to command an audience with just a guitar and her powerful vocals. NEWBURGH AMERICAN LEGION POST #44 BIERSTUBE SEPTEMBER 9 | 5 p.M.
Great live music and crazy cheap beer: It's party time again in Newburgh!
T
he long tradition of the American Legion Bierstube stretches back over six decades. An annual fundraiser for the Newburgh post of the world's largest veterans organization, the event began as a stag party - known as the "Elmer Party" - but eventually evolved into a co-ed affair. Still, the mission has always been the same: make money to give money. The popularity of the American Legion Bierstube isn't hard to grasp. Hundreds of people flock to State Street every year for a truly enjoyable evening of good eats, great live music and unbelievably cheap beer. In fact, the event is famous for 25 cent 16 oz glasses of beer - Bud or Bud Light Draft. Yes, you read that right - 25 cents. A full bar will also be available for a range of beverages - including Jello shots! For entertainment, the legendary Jimmies will rock the beer garden from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. They cover classic rock crowd favorites and more, songs guaranteed to get everybody up and on the dance floor. In the front bar, Newburgh's Mike Mitchell will perform acoustically from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. He's a favorite at the American Legion and always puts everyone in a good mood. And don't forget the dunking booth no party is complete without one!
The Bierstube is open to the public. Admission is $10 at the gate / $20 advanced tickets include admission to Bierstube + dinner (plates are $15 at the event). For more info, call 812-858-9069.The event is located at 711 State St. in Newburgh.

SWIRCA BREWFEST 2017
HISTORIC BOSSE FIELD | SEPTEMBER 23 | 6-9 P.M.
Field of drinks: popular brew festival back to quench your thirst at the nation's third oldest ballpark
I
f the wait for the 2017 SWIRCA BrewFest seemed even longer than usual, that's because it was. Organizers moved the event back a couple of months this year to give the annual BrewMile - the agency's other big summer fundraiser - center stage in July. Consequently, many of you have been seriously jonesing for samplings of the area's best craft beers, wines & spirits and culinary appetizers. Thankfully, the wait is almost over... While the date for BrewFest may have changed this year, the event is guaranteed to offer up the same great selection of adult beverages (over 300 craft beers, 50 wines, 20 liquors) and food. Over 4000 people come out to historic Bosse Field annually to experience this tri-state favorite and another big crowd is expected on Saturday, September 23. Proceeds serve to benefit SWIRCA & More, Southwestern Indiana’s Area Agency on Aging. And once again, organizers have lined up some great live music to provide the perfect backdrop to BrewFest. Keith Vincent and Curtis Brown, two of the area's finest musicians, are back by popular demand to share their acoustic stylings with attendees. Plus, new this year, enjoy the top-notch DJ services of Spectrum Sound while sampling to your heart's content. General admission tickets are $35 pre event and $40 at the door; they include all beverage tastings, food samples, a commemorative tasting glass, festival program, live entertainment, and free cab rides home sponsored by Unity Taxi. VIP tickets are $70 and include a premium Fest experience with extra perks such as premium parking, shuttle service, exclusive VIP entrance, the opportunity to beat the crowds and sample early during the 5-6 p.m. VIP hour, access to the VIP area to enjoy gourmet culinary treats, and specialty cocktails. Sponsors include Monarch Beverage Co., Tin Man Brewing Co., Diamond Galleria and many more. To order tickets online, visit eventbrite.com. For more info, visit swirca. org/brewfest or call 812-464-7800. Bosse Field is located at 1701 N. Main St. in Evansville.

he 2017-18 Evansville Philharmonic season is off and running with two spectacular performances on tap for September. As highlighted in last month's issue, Toyota's Opening Night featuring world-renowned banjoist BĂŠla Fleck is first up on Saturday, the 23rd. Talk about a meeting of the musical minds. This Classic Series collaboration between the Orchestra and the legendary bluegrass artist is guaranteed to be unlike any before as two disparate styles of playing come together to create something truly unique for EPO fans both old and new. Tickets are going fast, so don't miss out on one of the most exciting opening nights in the Philharmonic's storied history. Now on to the opening Pops Series performance on September 30. Trumpeter/ vocalist/conductor Byron Stripling - back for a third collaboration with Maestro Savia and the Orchestra - highlights A Night at the Cotton Club, a classy evening of jazz and swing inspired by the famed Harlem musical hot spot. Joined by vocalist Carmen Bradford and tap dancer Ted Louis Levy, Stripling and the EPO will take you back in time to the club's heyday when Duke Ellington's orchestra was the house band, and Cab Calloway and Ella Fitzgerald showcased the classics of the Great American Songbook. You'll feel like you're right there in the heart of 1920's New York City soaking up the music that defined the era. Stripling is a jack of all music trades. A native of Atlanta, the 56-year-old debuted

HISTORIC NEWBURGH GHOST WALKS OCTOBER 20-22
Spooky fun!: Newburgh tradition full of eerie twists and turns for all ages
G
host Walks feature stories rooted in history and are gleaned from old newspaper articles and family legends. There may be a few embellishments, but for the most part, the stories are all true! Every year, we have people share new stories of things that give you pause. Many people come year after year just to hear their favorite story. While many of the stories stay the same, other stories are added from year to year. The 24th annual Historic Newburgh Ghost Walks will run Friday, October 20, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, October 21, 5-9 p.m.; and Sunday, October 22, 5-8 p.m. The guided walking tours depart Preservation Hall (200 State Street) and each tour lasts about an hour. Tour guides take groups of 18-20 out for the walking tour every 12 minutes. It's not a “haunted house” type of tour where people or things jump out and scare you. We believe that history has its own eerie twists and turns. As you walk along the sidewalk, meet Ghosts of Newburgh’s past, who will share their tragic life; as well as, stories of life in Newburgh. There are two tours to choose from. Many will do one tour one year then the other tour the next year. Others will do one tour, go to dinner and then walk back to Preservation Hall for the other tour. On the Water Street tour, attendees will learn of river lore and some of our family mysteries. The State Street tour focuses on Civil War tales and the homes along State Street and East Jennings. Both tours offer their share of history, Newburgh style. Advance tickets are on sale now for $8. Tickets are $10 at the door. This is a great outing for groups! You may purchase tickets by calling Historic Newburgh, Inc. at 812-853-2815 or by visiting historicnewburgh.org to purchase your tickets on-line. After the tours, volunteers will offer hot cider. It's fun for the entire family. Come early and shop, dine and enjoy Newburgh. - Carol Schaefer

FIESTA EVANSVILLE GOEBEL SOCCER COMPLEX | OCTOBER 7-8 | Noon-5 P.M.
A celebration of diversity: The tri-state's biggest multicultural gathering just keeps on growing
F
our years ago, La Campirana Mexican Grill & Juice Bar co-owner Abraham Brown was looking for a way to bring the local Latino population together in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15). His solution was to create Fiesta Evansville, a day-long celebration of diversity in Wesselman Park that featured consulates from many different countries, various cultural booths and tasty dishes from all over South America and beyond. An instant success, the event has grown every year - both in scope and community involvement - as Brown continues to welcome groups outside of the Latino population to join in and be a part of this incredible celebration. And it couldn't happen at a better time with everyone seemingly at odds these days, both politically and personally. Just how big has Fiesta Evansville become? Over 6,000 people attended last year, and Brown is expecting upwards of 10,000 for the inaugural two-day event at Goebel Soccer Complex - a full weekend to accommodate all of the planned activities and expected crowds. And he's particularly excited about the opportunity for even more diversity with the inclusion of the area's Asian/Indian community and
other groups that have shown interest in being a part of the fun. Speaking of fun, an exciting addition to this year's event is a big soccer competition with many talented teams vying for the ultimate prize - the Fiesta Evansville Cup (scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Saturday). The proposed tournament was the primary reason behind the move to Goebel Soccer Complex; the venue not only makes the competition possible but also provides space for all the other activities and entertainment on tap for the two-day celebration, including hot air balloon rides, folkloric dancers, live music, clowns and exhibits, inflatables and much, much more. Well over 100 agencies and businesses are expected to participate in Fiesta Evansville this year and there's no telling just how big this event will get over time. Its exponential growth is a true testament to the increasing cultural diversity of our community and the willingness of people from all different backgrounds to meet and spend a day or two together and learn more about each other. Viva Fiesta Evansville! Goebel Soccer Complex is located at 6800 N. Green River Rd. in Evansville. For more info, follow Fiesta Evansville on Facebook or visit fiestaevansville.com

et one more reason to check out the Haynie's Corner Arts District, Walton's International Comfort Food encompasses everything that's great about downtown Evansville. Situated on the corner of Parrett and 3rd Street, Walton's occupies what used to be the Events Gallery, and although much has been done to make the space their own, historic charm still shines through, blending a rustic/modern vibe and showcasing high ceilings and a bright, airy ambiance. With plenty of room to entertain patrons, an open kitchen equipped with a true brick oven, fully-stocked bar, and occasional live music, Walton's is a must-try for locals and visitors alike. The menu is eclectic, from Cajun favorites to wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches to Asian fusion, salads and desserts. On my maiden voyage, daytime chef Joshua Edwards enthusiastically shared some of the house favorites. Although their appetizer list includes the likes of duck wings and hand-battered fried green tomatoes, I went straight for a brick oven pizza on hand-tossed crust with house-made basil pesto, fresh spinach, sliced tomato, gorgonzola crumbles, and fresh, gooey mozzarella. Mouthwatering on sight, the flavors exceeded expectation. The house-made crust was chewy, a perfect vehicle for the toppings, creating an excellent vegetarian option. Not to be outdone, it was followed quickly by Peppered Beef Yakisoba (Japanese) and Yellow Curry, a popular Thai dish. The Yakisoba noodles are a fried version of ramen-style, mixed with Angus beef tips, bell

peppers, onions, and tossed in traditional sauce, spicy and sweet. Amazing. Not typically a huge fan of curry, I can honestly say that it's some of the best I've tried since leaving California. Creamy and fragrant, the stew contains bits of chicken thigh, cauliflower, and tender potatoes, served with a side of white rice. Still, in my humble opinion, the best came last - the Pork Torta Tripleta, a towering sandwich of smoky grilled ham, apple-wood smoked bacon, house-pulled pork, and cutlet milanese (fried) topped with a medium-fried egg, and chipotle aioli. Once you figure out how to eat this delicious creation, you'll be glad you did. Walton's International Comfort Food caters to many palates, with several vegetarian/ pescetarian options on offer - their name says it all. Next trip: the Southern Fry, the Mexican Pizza, and Roasted Chicken Pho. I'll need some company with big appetites, however. CRAFT AFFAIRS with Alisha Patton » Varsity Liquors Craft Beer Guru
I
know it's only September, but in our world, fall is already here and that means Oktoberfest is taking over our shelves. When Oktoberfest beers start rolling out that means the inevitable is about to happen, the weather changes, and for the most part so does the palate. This style of beer isn't around long, but it definitely knows how to leave an impression. Ayinger Oktoberfest - This copper-colored lager may just be the epitome of the Oktoberfest style. Yes, that is a strong word, but this beer is spot on. This brew has flavors and aromas of full malt, sweet caramel notes, and a bit of herbal hops . The hops definitely help cut through some of the sweetness and prove that this beer is very wellrounded. This beer is medium-bodied with a dry finish, add that all together with an ABV at 5.8%, it's easy to see how you can have more than just one around the campfire. Spaten Oktoberfest - This refreshing and satisfying brew has a rich, golden color with a slightly off-white head. It has aromas of toasted bread and subtle floral notes. The flavors are full of malt, a touch of caramel sweetness, and balanced by a slight hint of hops at the end. Top it all off with a clean and crisp mouth-feel and you have a true traditional, classic Oktoberfest. Sun King Oktoberfest - Why not throw in a Hoosier staple into a sea of German classics? This Oktoberfest definitely pushes the ABV boundaries with a whopping 6.25%, but other than that it is true to form. This brew has a malty, somewhat nutty, and earthy hop aromas. With the first sip it definitely does have a sweetness that mellows out and finishes crisp and dry. Definitely easy drinking and smooth, plus they are in cans, which is ideal for whatever adventure lies ahead. No matter what Oktoberfest beers you are sipping on this fall, make sure to abide by the golden rule: enjoy with good food and great friends. Also, feel free to stop by the store and let us know your thoughts about this month's featured beers and join us Friday, September 29th from 5-7pm for a complimentary tasting. You can find us conveniently located in the Shoe Carnival Towne Centre next to Buffalo Wild Wings. Cheers, Alisha

TRISTEN WATTS Former Mater Dei High School football standout ready to suit up for second season with the Hoosiers
F
inally, it's college football time again and all is well in the tri-state. Of course, that means that our beloved Hoosiers are gearing up for another bowl run, beginning with an epic opening game against Ohio State (August 31) at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Along with Indiana's returning senior stars - linebacker Tegray Scales, defensive back Rashard Fant and quarterback Richard Lagow - the 2017 team roster includes sophomore defensive lineman Tristen Watts, a 6'2" 230 pound former Mater Dei standout. Talk about a guy who knows how to win. During his remarkable career under Head Coach Mike Goebel, Watts helped the Class 2A Wildcats compile a 26-2 record between his junior and senior years which included victories over the #1 ranked Class 3A and 4A teams (Tri-West Hendricks and Reitz, respectively). Mater Dei came tantalizingly close to winning the state championship both seasons, but ultimately fell just short. Still, Watts' on-field performance and great attitude impressed everyone who saw him play. So college football was the obvious next step, right? Well, though that seemed a given, he didn't initially commit to a try-out with the Hoosiers, preferring to concentrate on his studies (he's a biology major on a pre-dental track). But slowly, the itch for competition returned... Motivated to get back out on the field, Watts consulted with Coach Goebel, seeking advice about the prospect of gaining a spot on IU's squad. A highlight reel was put together and after discussions with the team's staff, a late pre-season try-out was scheduled. Challenging? You bet, but Watts always thrives in such situations; he gutted it out and officially became a Hoosier - even if a little late in the game, so to speak. Red-shirted as a freshman (therefore eligible to play through
58 |
the 2020 season), he still worked out and suited up like everyone else, eager to learn and adapt to the college level of play. Most importantly, IU Head Coach Tom Allen liked what he saw out of Watts in practice, particularly his willingness to buy in to Allen's "one word" philosophy - one word that sums up the spirit of the team: Breakthrough. And Watts is ready to help make this a breakthrough season in any way he can.
Watts surrounded by his family
Let's go back to your days at Mater Dei. What did you like about playing for Coach Goebel? I love Coach Goebel. He was friends with my dad through their college days, so I knew him a little bit before football. And at Mater Dei, he's a teacher, too, so you see him around. He's tough but caring. What do you count as the biggest achievement for the Wildcats during your time on the squad? I really loved senior year because it was so great playing with all of my friends - all the guys that I had been on teams with for years. As for the biggest achievement, I would have to say the big win against Reitz when we won on a last second two-point conversion (October 16, 2015) - and won the city title in the process. And a low point? I recall a time when I went to block a punt and dove - and a kid undercut me. I went over the top of him and landed on my back. I ended up throwing up in front of everyone (laughs). I guess I ate too much before the game, but I went right back in a play later. What has been the biggest adjustment to

college level play? Size and speed. Everyone is a great athlete. Even the linemen who are 280 pounds are fast and quick. Are there similarities between Coach Goebel and Coach Allen? Coach Allen is awesome - he's very caring like Coach Goebel. And he's a really faithful guy and brings that into his coaching style. I really like how he talks about a "flywheel" (a mechanical device specifically designed to efficiently store rotational energy) and how we're all pushing together and every little push matters. You never know which push is going to be the one that's going to get that wheel moving. But once you get it moving, it's tough to stop. What do you make of the Hoosiers squad this season? I feel like we have a good team. We graduated a lot of players, but the younger guys coming up are good and many are coming back. I'm going to work hard and try to earn a spot in the lineup - on special teams or wherever they need me. I just want to help make the guys who are on the field better.

1st ANNUAL HAYNIE'S CORNER OPen
Inaugural neighborhood table tennis tournament produces epic matches, high drama and a line at the cash bar t was an unseasonably cool, rainy August afternoon as 16 local ping pong players filed into the Ballroom at Sauced in downtown Evansville, each one harboring dreams of victory - or, in some cases, not getting skunked. So began the first annual Haynie's Corner Open, a table tennis tournament born out of late night games at the aforementioned Italian restaurant. As the story goes, owner Scott Schymik and his crew often unwind after closing time with a little healthy competition - and these fun, fiery exchanges led to the proposal of a neighborhood event that quickly gained approval. Sponsors including Escalade Sports, Evansville Podcast Network, Haynie's Corner Arts District and Sauced chipped in and planning commenced. Josh "Big Cat" Pietrowski loves sports and spreads sheets. He's also got a big personality and a booming voice - all attributes which made him the ideal emcee for the Haynie's Corner Open. After getting involved early on, the Head Brewer at Turoni's Pizzery wasted no time lining up - and talking up -

the participants and plotting the course of the tournament. Every player was assigned to a bracket and guaranteed to compete in at least three matches. Ultimately, the two biggest losers (not in life, mind you) would face off in the Toilet Bowl while the two biggest winners (again, we're just talking ping pong here) would meet in the finals for the prized championship belt - beautifully handmade.

Now back to that unseasonably cool summer day, August 6. 16 handpicked players representing downtown restaurants, businesses and organizations arrived to do battle - followed by a sea of admirers that forked over $5 to witness this momentous occasion. Truth be told, a few were probably just looking for an excuse to day-drink via the cash bar on site or simply biding their time until the after-party at Mo's House. Regardless, as the matches got underway at 1 p.m., Pietrowski began barking out the play-by-play, peppering his commentary with quick wit and amusing anecdotes. He certainly kept the atmosphere light and fun for the overflowing crowd, but the tension between the players continued to ratchet up with each successive round. Actually, there was a lot of laughter as it's virtually impossible to keep a straight face with Big Cat in the room. After five hours of highly entertaining - and at

The much-anticipated Toilet Bowl featured Mary "Sixth Street Soapery" Allen vs. Corey "Downtown Jack of all Trades" Edwards. While Ellis and Allen The Players prevailed by winning Mary Allen and losing, respectively, Claire Ballard it was the HCAD that Jason Burton really came out on top Ryan Costello as proceeds benefited Drew Dawson Jacob Diehm the neighborhood Corey Edwards organization. LOVE JUNKIES Truly addictive: five-piece cover band of local professionals hits the musical sweet spot

hat do you get when you put an attorney, a surgeon, an engineer, an account manager, and a guy who used to tour with The Smashing Pumpkins on a stage together? No, this isn't the beginning of a joke - these are the members of local cover band Love Junkies. After guitarist Santiago Arruffat caught wind of a new vocalist in town, the two met at a jam session and hit it off, so after drafting Connecticut native Alex Deeley, the remaining musicians fell into place. Arruffat, keyboardist Bill Sievern, and drummer Bryan St. Pere had previously played in a band together, and quickly recruited bassist Dennis Lyerla to round out their sound. Their first practice, in fact, was a breeze - "It just clicked," says Alex. Sitting around a kitchen island with the fabulous five while they sipped drinks and munched on snacks to an eclectic playlist, it was easy to see why - the comfortable friendships resemble more of a family, which is an important aspect when it comes to forming a band. The newfound group, after having a "magical" dinner at Turoni's, decided to just go for it, booking initial gigs at Bokeh Lounge, The Really Big Show (an annual comedy event benefiting Easter Seals), and Signature School. The Perfect Fall Shoe: Mule Loafers
With Hailey Reynolds September fashions: How to stay comfortable during these everchanging Midwestern days
S
eptember is the start of flannels, football season, and drastic daily temperature changes. In the morning, there is a definite autumn chill in the air but by the time the afternoon sun is high, it will feel hotter than the desert sun. Here are a few ways to feel comfortable throughout these Midwestern days. • Adding a blazer to a simple white tee and shorts combination keeps you both comfortable and polished. I like to keep the base of my outfit simple and use the blazer and accessories to add depth to the ensemble. Blazers and similar jackets are usually thicker so it will protect you from the chill in the air but having a thinner t-shirt and shorts will add for a lighter feel. • Line skirts started making an appearance last summer and fall and it looks like they

will be even more popular this season. Adding a comfy sweater balances your coverage and gives you a unique detail to a classic look. Bralettes are also great to pair with sweaters that have a lower cut. • Decorative shorts don’t have to stop when the temperature goes down. Flannels are the main piece worn in this season but they tend to be overdone with just a pair of jeans. Adding a flannel to a pair of shorts that have more of a “voice” will ensure for a trendier outfit. Adding your favorite pair of fall booties to any of these looks will also highlight your fall style without making you break a sweat.

"Transitioning into the Autumn season can be a blast when it comes to cuddling up in your favorite cozy oversized sweaters, comfy leggings, and cute booties.... but what about that awkward in-between season time where your feet are either uncomfortably warm or slightly too cool? That's where these hidden gems come into play. I love Mule Loafers because they are extremely versatile. You can dress them up or dress them down with basically anything you already own. They are the perfect shoe! These shoes also range in price for any individual's price point, which makes them even more appealing. You can find affordable ones at Target for less than $20, or splurge on the fan favorite Gucci pair that cost around $700. I have been loving dressing my gray pair of Mule Loafers with jeans and a lace cami for a casual everyday minimalistic look that transitions perfectly into the cooler months." - HP

BOEHNE: Boehne is a 2-year-old male brown tabby. He was found as a stray by a VHS staff member (near Boehne Camp Road J) and never reclaimed. So therefore, this guy thinks West Side is the best side! (If you’re not a westsider, he may have to decide if he really wants to associate with you… Oh, hey, he probably would.) Boehne is friendly with most people and likes other cats! Sometimes when he gets overstimulated he plays a little rough, so respectful kids over the age of 5 would work best for Boehne. He’s currently the VHS’ second-longest feline resident, waiting on a home since February. His $30 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and FeLV/FIV test!
TITAN: This gentle giant is Titan! He’s a male Great Dane/Shepherd mix. He is tall and lanky, and gets along fairly well with other dogs. Sometimes he can be picky with canine friends, so he’ll need to meet any other potential doggie roommates before going home. Titan is one of the VHS’ longest canine residents. He’s only a year old and weighs 57 lbs. This pretty photo is of him enjoying a walk in the park at Cardio for Canines! Titan’s adoption fee is $100 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, heartworm test, 30 days of free health insurance, and more.
ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT LuELLEN OFFERMAN & WILLOW
LuEllen Offerman lives a busy life on the north side of Evansville. She works nights as a nurse and is a mom, too. Yet, she somehow finds time to take care of four rescue dogs, all adopted from local shelters. The most recent addition to her seemingly evergrowing family is Willow, a Lab-Retriever mix just four months old. Recently, Offerman was out with her kids and asked if they'd like to stop by the VHS and play with the dogs. "We weren't looking to adopt another animal, but the puppy room always gets me," she says. "Willow (named "Joy" at the time) was there and wasn't spoken for, so I called my kids' dad, and he said, 'absolutely not.' But I gave him the sad puppy dog face, and he said, 'well, you're going to do it, anyway - why not?'" It was a wise decision, because this is one smart puppy, all right. In just two days, Willow learned to sit and soon after was shaking hands. And according to Offerman, she's getting along great with the other dogs in the house. "We also have another Lab mix, and she absolutely loves him. We also have two Chihuahuas, and she loves to play with them." And it looks like Offerman may not be done rescuing animals. Her ultimate goal is to adopt a fullblooded Mastiff. But first she'll need more space!
SANDY: Sandy is a female 3-year-old American rabbit. She was surrendered to VHS with five other female rabbits from an owner in Vincennes with terminal cancer. Sandy is the last one left, and she’d really love to go home soon! If you’re on the fence about adopting a bunny… Sandy is spayed & microchipped, which are two services that pet store bunnies would never come with. She recently went to a program for preschool-age kids at Ark Crisis Child Care Center and did great! Sandy’s adoption fee is only $40 and she’s ready to go home today.

Annual recreational bike ride raises much-needed funds for area's homeless animals
T
he Posey County-based PC Pound Puppies continues to do great work for the tri-state's homeless animal population. Over a decade ago, the organization was formed by a small group of volunteers determined to save area dogs that would otherwise have been euthanized. Since then, they've found forever homes for - and helped to foster - an ever-increasing number of animals and established themselves as a highlyrespected shelter. Recently, someone stole items meant for a rummage sale to raise funds for PC Pound Puppies - money that would have gone to buy food, provide shots for the dogs and more. Hard to believe that such a thing could happen. Thankfully, the community rallied around the organization and helped them recover some of the losses. Still, they'll need to host more fundraisers in the future, because every dollar counts at a volunteer operation. You can help support PC Pound Puppies by attending their annual Pedaling for Pups event that runs in tandem with Kunstfest weekend in New Harmony. Participants can choose either a 48 or 65 mile recreational bike ride that includes a rest stop at the popular Silver Bell Restaurant in Wadesville. Ideal for friends and family, Pedaling for Pups benefits the homeless animals at the shelter and gives them a chance to find their forever home. To check out the 48 mile route, visit ridewithgps.com/routes/10014703. For the 66 mile route, visit ridewithgps.com/routes/9484741.

NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2017 | RELIGION
ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church
Q:
Which religious tradition is the "real one"?
Mark Twain famously said, “Man is the only animal that has the true religion – several of them!” There was a time when everyone assumed that you were a Christian or a Jew or no religious preference. This, of course, was a gross over simplification. Many religious traditions have been present in our country since its founding. Much is often made of the “Judeo-Christian” tradition being the tradition on which our laws are based. But as time moved forward, and as people from other parts of the world immigrated to the U.S., other religious traditions came with them: Islam, Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism, and many more. Suddenly, the world of the “Judeo-Christian tradition” seemed to be slipping away. What I have discovered over years of conversation and cooperation is that these various traditions hold far more in common than we may be aware. We are all searching for the answer to who we are, what we have been created to do, how we relate to each other, and how we can work together to make the world a better place. I have been blessed to build friendships and partnerships with people of many different faiths. Through these marvelous people outside of my own tradition, I have gained new understanding of my own faith tradition as well as new respect for their faith tradition. Maybe Twain was right after all. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff
Getting Serious about Lightening Up
N
o matter where you fall on the political spectrum nor how you feel about any given current events, I doubt few would disagree that we are living in some crazy, chaotic times. With all the apocalyptic talk and constant bombardment with footage of rallies and riots gone awry, I often envy those too young to fully comprehend these goings-on. Is there truly ignorance in bliss? Should we be jealous of those gleefully unaware? … okay, I can’t keep doing that. While the overall sentiment may be something I think we can all agree with, I can only keep a straight face - or keyboard - with that schtick for so long. The truth is that worrying about this all is grating on me. Plus, I’d be doing a disservice to my high school English teacher to be using clichés so… well, cliché. I’ll be the first to admit that those fauxphilosophical jaunts I just satirized are something I’m frequently guilty of, and there’s no doubt in my mind they get a little stale after a while. I wouldn’t be doing my duty if I didn’t try to entertain, and repeating the same things ad infinitum isn’t most people’s idea of fun. Besides, everyone loves a little meta humor, right? (And is that meta humor just by acknowledging it…?) I sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to say something deep and profound that I forget it’s alright just

to simply say something funny, and I begin to not follow my own advice about taking ourselves too seriously. I’m not denying there are many things - our careers, our responsibilities, our relationships - that undoubtedly need to be at the forefront of our minds, or that being genuinely concerned for our community, our country, our civilization as a whole - isn’t worth concern. But we’re no good to any of those if we let any one of them consume our every thought, motive, or action. So I challenge anyone who reads this: Make time to have fun. Make yourself laugh occasionally. And lest I be a hypocrite, I’ll make myself do this as well. I could throw any number of quotes out there to try and convince you to join me, but do I need one? If I have to use the words of someone smarter than myself to convince you to lighten up, my point has already been proven.

Upset about the Obamacare repeal failure? Blame Richard Murdock
Empathy and compassion take less energy than hate
P
eople seem to have varying opinions when it comes to the new app that has recently taken social media by storm. Sarahah, an anonymous platform, allows users to leave private messages for folks, and whether the receiver chooses to share the content with others is up to them. I, myself, have chosen to not open myself up to this forum, and I have mixed feelings about it for others. Although the app can be used to send positivity, the exact opposite is what makes my skin crawl. Constructive criticism is one thing - another outlet for cyber-bullying is a horse - er, wolf - of another color. Trolls can now completely mask their identities, no longer needing fake names or photos, and the scariest part is that they're on your friends list. Unlike Topix (don't even get me started), words of hate don't just hang out in some dusty thread that the subject may never have to encounter - they're sealed with a kiss and sent directly to your inbox. No, thanks. I've often spoken on the frustration of lack of face-to-face communication in the height of technology, and this is just one more example of how cruel the anonymity of the internet allows people to be. People are most truly terrifying when they know they can get away
with something, and I don't need that negativity in my life. Of course, respectful comments are welcome, and uplifting words are always appreciated, but it's nice to know who they're coming from so one can return the favor. Bottom line - no (clap) one (clap), is perfect. Without the flaws of humanity, there would be no reason to appreciate the beauty of it. Everyone makes mistakes, experiences guilt, regret, has insecurities, and as hard as it is to believe sometimes, I think most people are inherently good, even if they're not so skilled at showing it. Empathy and compassion take less energy than hate. And as always, taking my own advice is a tough pill to swallow, but I'm speaking to myself just as much as I'm speaking to you. Let's try to be nice, yeah? "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." Buffy, The Vampire Slayer Signed, Whitney Patterson, someone who'd rather you say it to my face
The political pundits are talking about the Senate Republicans' failed attempt at repealing and replacing Obamacare. Three GOP senators - Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and John McCain (Arizona) who flew back to Washington to cast his vote while undergoing treatment for brain cancer - all voted no and sunk the bill. But none of that would have mattered if Darmstadt resident Richard Murdock had been elected Senator. A darling of the Tea Party, Murdock pulled off a huge upset in the 2012 primaries by defeating six-term incumbent Richard Lugar. He was on his way to defeating Democrat Jon Donnelly in the general election until a huge debate slip-up when he said, "even when life begins in the horrible situation of rape, that is something God intended to happen." Needless to say, Murdock lost to a man who voted for Obamacare while serving in the House of Representatives. A staunch conservative, Murdock would've been the final vote to put the effort to repeal and replace Obamacare over the top and it would've been signed by President Trump. The rest, as they say, would've been history. So if you want to blame somebody for the Obamacare repeal failure, blame him. TEENAGE INJURED by John Thurgood
T
hat first tour through the Midwest must have stopped in every small town with a skate park and a skate shop. He rotated the same five company shirts for every day of the week, and wore white tees that he bought from gas stations on the weekends. He felt the most comfortable on the weekends, still hesitant about the idea of being known only for skateboarding. He was the youngest in a van of 10 skaters: Five pros, a filmer, one team manager and three ams (including himself). He brought his camera that first trip, and took photos of everything along the way. Once he returned home and developed the negative, he realized that most of his pictures were composed of skinny kids in baggy jeans and over-sized t-shirts, brandishing a freshly skinned knee, chipped tooth or bruised something or other. All these kids he had never met before, but each one opened up immediately after he asked to take a picture of their injury. It didn't matter how fresh it was. The fresher it was the more eager they seemed to be. Skateboarding took him everywhere. He traveled across the United States. He went to Canada and Mexico. Then he went to Europe: England, then France, then to a small contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. He met his wife in Spain, and she taught him Spanish. Together, they lived in Malmo, Bristol and finally Huntington Beach. All the while, wherever he went, wherever he skated, he continued to take his photos. When he saw a kid with a broken arm, a boy with stitches across his brow or a girl with removable front teeth, he would, without hesitation, ask if he could take their picture. At first they didn't know him, but eventually, he became more famous for his skating and eventually for his photos. Kids often stopped him in the street as he strolled to the market or down to the pier, and they offered their bloody elbows and scabbed-covered knees as if oblation had become a necessary part of skate culture. And yet, he would abide, every time, taking their pictures and adding them to his ever-growing archive. Over the years, he had endured many injuries as well, taking a self-portrait of each one. These photos graced his archives along with the others, only separated by his desire to never smile in his photos. Scrolling through his series of books (each published with enviable presses) his self portraits stood out among the lot, flashing some level of concern, as if there had been some amount of misunderstanding about why he was captured among all those smiling teens.

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE New characters, new storylines, and plenty of drama: The 2017 TV pilot season is almost here!
I
usually watch as many pilots as possible and then end up latching onto at least one or two new shows a year to add on to my normal list of shows that I follow throughout the year. So I have to really click with a show if I decide to truly invest time in it. The Good Doctor is an ABC show that really piqued my interest when I realized the wildly talented Freddie Highmore is starring in it as a brilliant, young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. If you know who Highmore is, then you know this is the perfect role for him after his incredible stint on the wildly popular but also highly creepy Bates Motel. I think the best way to describe The Good Doctor is an equal mix between Doogie Howser and House. And I will most definitely be tuning in when it premieres on September 25 at 9 p.m. CST. A.P. Bio is another show I am excited about. The show will air on NBC and stars Glenn Howerton and Patton Oswalt, who are both incredible comedic actors. I have an inkling they will have really good chemistry together. And I am excited to see Howerton do something other than be a misogynistic “golden god” on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Also, Seth Meyers and Lorne Michaels are producing it so what more is there to say? One show that has surprisingly piqued my interest is ABC’s Deception, which sounds like a great spinoff to Revenge, but it’s actually a show about a superstar magician who is recruited by the FBI to help them solve crimes. And honestly, that is such a great premise for the type of Bones and Castle show they are so clearly trying to make. In Bones an anthropologist who specializes in bones is recruited by the FBI. And in Castle a crime novelist is recruited to help solve crimes with the NYPD. Both were long running hit shows so ABC probably has the right idea with Deception. If none of these shows pique your interest, make sure to look for other new shows coming this fall because hundreds of new ones premiere every year and at least one is bound to keep you hooked. - Marisa Patwa

OKJA (TV-MA) NETFLIX Okja is an emotional and thought-provoking tale of a young girl’s love for her friend, an animal, in our world of ongoing consumption, industry, and plastic people. Alongside its whimsical style and heart, the film wittily pokes fun at both the food industry and the over-zealous, virtue-signaling dogma that develops in many animal rights groups. Although ultimately the antagonist is a long line of admittedly psychopathic CEOs driving a massive food processing corporation, the theme focuses on something far more pure and indefinable than any idea. It’s the story of a brave girl, Mija, courageously fighting everything just for her beloved friend, Okja, who happens to be an immense, genetically modified "super pig." That’s right. The narrative centers around an experimental animal. So, there’s that story too. The plot could be very cluttered and nonsensical with all of the issues it tries to address, but it’s not. Mija moves from problem to problem with always the goal of reaching Okja and bringing her home. The characters we meet along the way are memorable and provide several small chuckles and somewhat radical caricatures of humanity along the way. The film creates an entertaining differentiation between fantasy and real love. - Laura Engram

Smurfs: The Lost Village is an adorable and imaginatively colorful throwback to the original television cartoon show of the 1980s. It is much of the truly nostalgic reboot that the previously live-action franchise needed, and my children thoroughly laughed their pants off with enjoyment. There are numerous plot holes, even for a children’s movie, which lowers its rating slightly. However, the areas that the movie does well outshine many of these issues. In the end, it has the humorous believability we may associate with movies
The vibrant environment the Smurfs live in and travel through is eye-capturing, with brilliant animation and immersive settings. The voice acting is incredibly well-cast and fun, with the evil wizard Gargamel being the most entertaining. He is played by wellknown Rainn Wilson of NBC's The Office, whose inflections along with punch lines will even keep the adults chortling. The film tells the long-questioned story of why Smurfette is the only girl Smurf. Along with other beloved members of the village, like Brainy and Clumsy, as well as a slew of new characters, we all learn the truth behind what it really means to smurf. Needless to say, your family will smurf this movie. - Laura Engram

LANA DEL REY Lust for Life Interscope Reviewing Lana Del Rey’s fifth studio album, Lust for Life, was like weathering a hurricane in the middle of an ocean. Not at all a slight, but rather, honesty on how inwardly moving the music is, with emotional realism and sincere questionings. Currently enduring my own storms of love, dashing against the truth of life, the album cut. Recognize the struggle. Del Rey’s leisurely yet purposeful style seems to seep into your depths quietly, but will suddenly react, drawing out any lurking demons to stare at them face to face. It is a remarkably soul-filling melodic experience. The first three tracks alone will either take you on a spiritual journey across memory and being, or they will simply hit you like a ten ton truck. Either way, it’s a good time. Though there are a few awkward tracks, like “Groupie Love," most of the album carries the same power, especially in tracks like “Tomorrow Never Came.” Closing track “Get Free” wholeheartedly brings it all together. I don't think I've ever loved an album so much, felt the words as deeply, nor found it as confidingly bittersweet. - Laura Engram
311 Mosaic BMG 311 makes a solid return with their twelfth studio album, Mosaic. Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, they will always be the most unlikely bastions of tropical, bassy, badassy sexiness. Much of this album is an exciting revisit to their roots, but with more than a few dials turned up loud. One of my favorite songs on the album is “Island Sun.” Amidst the calming, reggae-style picking on reverb, the honeyed words of lead vocalist Nick Hexum are drizzled across swelling strums: “There's a better place to be and it's one you need to see in this lifetime.” In “Perfect Mistake” you get a surprising mixture of 311’s signature rap style on top of jumping influences that flow from heavy dubstep to reggaeton. There are also several songs which incorporate fun and acoustically interesting dueling guitar solos like those in the classic “Beautiful Disaster.” “Til the City’s On Fire” carries the distortion through into a bouncing dance club-esque mix. 311 has taken their well-known talent for early party rock alongside soothing tropical sounds and indignant lyrics, have only turned it up, and proved to be beyond relevant. - Laura Engram

AJ CRAWDADDY BAND Slow Cookin' Renown Records The AJ Crawdaddy Band returns with Slow Cookin’, the follow up to their 2015 debut, Vaporized. Masterfully combining different blues styles like Chicago, west coast and jump blues, the band forms its center around guitarist Angelo Rossi, who produced and engineered the album. “AJ’s Shuffle” kicks things off, an upbeat instrumental number that perfectly sets the tone. “Talk to Me Baby,” a song written and sung by band member James Dewrance, highlights Rossi’s guitar skills. It also allows Dewrance to showcase his considerable talents on the harmonica. Elsewhere, a cover of the Lowell Fulson song “Too Many Drivers at the Wheel” contains a great tongue-in-cheek message. The first half of the song allows the horn section of Michael Peloquin on saxophone and Marcel Marchetti on trumpets to shine through nicely while the middle contains a guest appearance from Christoffer “Kid” Andersen. The horn section continues to display its prowess on Robert Nighthawk's “Someday." The fine musicianship complements the song’s lyrics about a man whose woman has left. “Cold Cold Feeling,” a Jessie Mae Robinson cover, shows off a certain sense of melancholy in Dewrance’s vocals backed by Rossi’s guitar. The second half of the song boasts a slow and soulful harmonica solo from Dewrance that ties things together very well. - Paul Bragin
MILLIGAN VAUGHAN PROJECT MVP Mark One Records After starting a tour of Texas, the Austin duo known as the Milligan Vaughan Project released their debut album, MVP, on August 4. Opening track “Soul Satisfaction” contains heavy guitar from Tyrone Vaughan, nephew of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. The song seems to straddle the line between blues and heavy metal. Vaughan’s first songwriting contribution to the album, “A Little Bit of Heaven,” begins with a lot of soul and funk elements. It's balanced out with some blistering guitar work near the end of the song. “Driving You,” a co-write between Milligan and Vaughan, effortlessly combines elements of newer blues with traditional styles. A fiery interpretation of a Buddy Guy classic, “Leave My Girl Alone” maintains a nice bass line throughout the song which helps to form a great foundation and sets the stage for some of Vaughan's best guitar work. “What Passes For Love” - which features an extended guitar solo from Vaughan - was written by David Grissom, who plays guitar on the album and also serves as producer. Closing track “The Palace of the King” displays a nice balance between the bass and Vaughan’s guitar and lyrically pines for a homecoming back to Texas after traveling the world. - Paul Bragin

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Villains Matador Records Few bands have managed to stay both as commercially viable and critically successful as Queens of the Stone Age. Nearing the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut, they return with Villains, an album equally a departure from their previous sound yet somehow familiar. Singer/guitarist Josh Homme has never been one to follow trends or genre conventions, and he certainly isn't making exceptions on his seventh album under the QotSA banner. Tapping producer Mark Ronson (better known for hits with Bruno Mars and Lily Allen) to man the boards may be his most ambitious move yet, and it works surprisingly well. Josh insisted that he “loves to dance” in every recent interview. Any apprehensions this may have given longtime fans (myself included) leading up to the album’s release should be safely assuaged - songs like the opening two tracks may tempt even the most crossed-armed wallflower to hit the floor. Synths that would fit ‘80s club hits pepper these and many other songs, but instead of replacing the guitar as many lesser bands often do, they serve to supplement the six-strings. A proclaimed love of classic punk is evidenced by the Dead Kennedys feel of “Head Like a Haunted House,” “The Evil Has Landed” still rocks with their trademark swaggering heaviness, and “Domesticated Animals” displays their penchant for occasional off-kilter tempos. - Jonathan Gluff
BRETT ELDREDGE Brett Eldredge Atlantic Records Sometimes, a song is so terrible that you wish you could exact revenge upon whoever wrote it. While gleefully writing a scathing review of Brett Eldredge’s self-titled album doesn’t quite make up for him sonically assaulting us all, it comes close. My hatred of pop country is well-documented. But I dare say Brett’s music may be the worst I’ve heard yet. Imagine Blake Shelton, but somehow even more bland and unoriginal. Just another “Bro-country” also-ran like Sam Swindell (I’ll get one of those right someday). But as Madonna had to justify her love, so must I justify my hate. Luckily, Brett lends a hand. Perhaps he thought this particular brand of “country” was lacking in plodding, mid-tempo, quarter-note bass drum beats, because that’s what constitutes most of the album. Beat that horse not just dead, but all the way into a glue bottle, and then add some handclaps. And when you think the lyrics can’t get any more embarrassing than “Love Someone,” “Brothers,” and “Cycles,” he tops it on “No Stopping You,” which adds a lifeless synth melody straight from an ‘80s ballad to drop the bar lower. - Jonathan Gluff
TLC TLC 852 Musiq The original scene-trouncing, forwomen-by-women R&B power trio returns for one final passionate “we don’t need no scrubs, just some waterfalls.” TLC’s self-titled album is a non-stop bumping exclamation point of unapologetic self-love, empowerment, and feel-good vibes, not to mention a deeply fulfilling trip of nostalgic sound and style. It’s obvious the group has also profoundly evolved over their fifteen-year recording hiatus. Yet from the introduction onward, TLC still maintain the classic jazzy and moving elements that people fell in love with them for, showcasing their vast talent. The tracks are varied in style, with both synth and crisp instrumentals, and won’t disappoint long-time fans. Snoop Dogg guests on both “Way Back” tracks, first to immediately beckon you into a sort-of 90s time machine, with lyrics expressing a truth in how we all grow, cross paths, and learn to appreciate as life flies by. Every track continues this sincere trend. The song “Haters” reminds me of most of TLC’s vintage material, still a voice for the next generation of young women. Closing contribution “Joy Ride” wraps this final gift to fans with a thankful, upbeat note. - Laura Engram
RISE AGAINST Wolves Virgin Records What I feel for Rise Against's Wolves is exactly the same type of anticlimactic hype I remember feeling at another point at my life, when Pennywise released the album called The Fuse. Same as that one, Wolves is disappointing punk bubble wrap surrounding one or two decent songs. Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh, but for a band I expected much more from, the effort’s lack of growth is more tiresome than any degree of enjoyable, especially from what I’ve seen from all sorts of comeback acts this month. Overall, the album does at least stand as a legitimate punk album, with absolutely no f*cks given. If anything, I can say they’ve stayed true to themselves, with track after track of raucous power chords coupled against Tim Mcllrath’s snarling, yet meekly melodic yells. One song that did catch my attention, probably just feeling like a soothing break from constant but cheap chaos, was “Politics of Love.” Equally cheap “Waahs” and “Oohs” break the noise, but they feel more substantial than the rest of a band which takes themselves far too seriously. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2017

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3
Here’s to this season’s first Oktober Fest beer for me. It’s Goose Island’s annual seasonal Marzen. It pours up a perfectly clear, light copper color with a very light, airy head and light carbonation. Its aroma is toasty and malty in a nice kind of way. The flavor seems consistent with previous incarnations with toasty malts, caramel and a bready yeastiness. It's very drinkable - good but not exceptional in my opinion.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A thin white head forms on this lager and quickly disappears after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. A generous amount of malt dominates the nose. The malt presence continues with the taste of the beer, with a little bit of hop presence also coming through. This beer will definitely be popular during the fall months. People who enjoy malty beers will want to try this seasonal soon. Pair it with traditional German cuisine.

This is a golden amber-colored beer with great carbonation. It has a nice toasted malt flavor and is very smooth. I would consider this on the lighter side of the traditional Oktober fest style of beers that are out there. But I like this one better since I can drink a couple of these without feeling too filled up.

An American IPA from a brewer I’m unfamiliar with. I have to admit that my expectations were low as I’m not generally fond of “flavored up” IPAs. It pours up hazyorange with a short white head. Its nose is tangerine, other citrus notes, hops and toasty malts. The taste is refreshingly like its aroma with a bit more presence of the caramel/ toasty malts. Hops are more prominent too. It’s very nice. The mouthfeel is very full flavor and leans toward heavy so you’ll probably not be inclined to drink it as a session beer and that’s good since it has a 7.5% ABV. As usual, proceed with caution. My favorite brew this month.
A thick white head crowns this India Pale Ale. A burst of citrus notes and pine from the tangerine and hops fill the nose. The first sip of the beer starts off subdued, but the hop presence steadily builds and culminates in a very long finish. Hop lovers will definitely want to seek out this seasonal beer while they can. Pair it with spicy Hawaiian chicken or other spicy cuisines like Indian, Cajun or Mexican.

This is an orange-colored beer with a 7.5% ABV. You can smell the standard hops aroma and I can taste the tangerine in this beer. Not as heavy of a citrus flavor as the Heavy Seas but not bad just the same. It's pretty smooth and easy to drink.

This one’s a white ale (that’s beer jargon for wheat beer) from Iceland. It pours up a dull, light straw color with a big three finger head that fades to thin film on top within two minutes. Clearly it’s filtered since in spite of its murkiness it’s free of particulate that's often found in this genre of beer. Its aroma is interesting with hints of coriander spice and the brewer tells us orange peel, although I didn't pick up on that specifically. I picked up on that familiar grainy smell of wheat beer as well. The taste is mostly a mirror image of its aroma and quite drinkable with a nice level of carbonation and an almost sweet finish. If you like Blue Moon you should love this one.
A thick white head rests on top of this hazy, straw-colored white ale when poured into a wheat beer glass. The scent of wheat and some spice from the coriander used highlight the scent profile. The first sip refreshingly hits the tongue with a light and crisp flavor and smoothness from oats added to the beer. Try this beer during the hotter days of late summer. Pair it with seafood, poultry or spicy dishes.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I can taste the orange peel and the coriander. I consider this very similar to a Blue Moon but much better. It's a lot smoother and just has a better flavor. I really enjoy Blue Moon and I'm not trying to beat them up, but I like this one a lot better; still, they are very similar.

Heavy Seas TropiCannon Citrus IPA
DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75
This one’s an American IPA. It pours a slightly hazy orange-copper color with a dense offwhite two finger head and good retention. The head settles to a thin cap that lingers. The aroma is surprising and pronounced with notes of mango, peach, and orange. There are some hop and malt notes there too but
they’re mostly overpowered by the fruits. The taste mostly reflects the nose and adds an earthy floral, grassy touch. The finish is slightly bitter but on the soft side. The mouthfeel is medium and the drinkability is high. Note, don’t be fooled by its light, fruity taste, it’s got a 7.25% ABV.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head forms on this golden beer and never completely disappears. The scent of citrus hits the nose as soon as the beer fills the glass. Upon bringing the glass up to the nose for a more proper smell, the blood orange notes take center stage. The
blood orange flavor continues with the first sip of the beer. This could serve as a good introduction for someone new to craft beer.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a hazy, amber-colored beer. I can immediately smell the citrus aroma and not the heavy hops that you find in a standard IPA. I like the 7.2% ABV and heavy hops flavor. What I really enjoy is the true citrus flavors that I detect over the hops. Usually, the hops flavors and the citrus sort of intermingle in an IPA but not in this one. The true citrus flavor is what I really like about this beer.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Walter the Wine Guy FROM LIQUOR LOCKER
Liquor Locker's resident wine guru asks the eternal question: To Syrah or Petite Sirah?
T
here you are staring at the many bottles of wine on the shelf, wondering what you're going to drink tonight. Your eye catches a bottle of Petite Sirah (or Syrah) and right next to it you see a bottle of Syrah. Your mind says, “Huh?” - is this one bigger than the other, or something else? Today we are going to attempt to answer this so the confusion will subside and you can make an educated decision! First, these are two very different grapes varietals. Petite Sirah is the American name for the French grape variety known as Durif and is usually used as a blending grape for adding a deeper color, more tannin, and intensity of fruit flavor to the wine it is being blended with. It's not uncommon for this grape to be bottled as a single varietal wine, in spite of this grape being less than 10% of total production in the United States. The grape Petite Sirah can create a delicious and interesting wine with dense, inky quality, blackberry flavors, and a long smoky finish. As a matter of fact, there really isn’t anything Petite about this grape, except for its small berry and cluster size. I have heard that this varietal got its name because the grape bunch

looked like Syrah. Its slightly smoky flavor works well with grilled or smoked meats. Syrah, also known as Shiraz in Australia, is more frequently made as a single varietal wine. The color is less intensive than Petite Sirah, though not without strong, mouthwatering flavor. Its geographic home has long been associated with the north-south running Rhone Valley, a controlled wine appellation in the

Walt is Liquor Locker's Resident Wine Guru and is a “goto” steak wine. Here are a few choices for you to try, most are nicely priced and deliver on both flavor and price! First, a few Petite Sirahs to get you started. “The Crusher” California Petite Sirah. Its deep purple color unveils a pleasing nose of cherry, vanilla cola, teriyaki, and a hint of bourbon barrel. Dense flavors of dried blueberry, tart blackberry, dark chocolate on the wine first blush, and finishes with layers of roast coffee, cocoa nibs, and a sweet touch of roasted fig. It’s aged in French and American oak barrels to yield complexity and style. Serve this wine with smoked, BBQ’d, or grilled beef or pork, bold Mexican foods, or strong cheeses. This wine is a blend of 81% Petite Sirah, 19% other red varietals. Next is Guenoc California Petite Sirah. It's full-bodied and rich. It boasts fruit-forward flavors of blueberry, red raspberry, and tart blackberry, complemented by hints

"The Crusher" California Petite Sirah, Le Chamel, and Machete will give you a wonderful tour of two different grapes. of clove and cinnamon. Its velvety tannins and oak notes round out the palate, adding to the long finish of bright berry fruits and cocoa. This wine pairs well with a juicy grilled burger or spicy Italian sausage. The wine is a blend of 97% Petite Sirah and 3% other red varietals. For those of you that want a Syrah, my first choice would be a French wine - may as well learn from the original region. Le Chamel, Costieres de Nimes, Rhone Valley, France. It's a beautiful wine with generous aromas of blackberries, chocolate, and spice. On the palate, it's remarkably smooth and has a wonderful, long finish. The wine pairs perfectly with beef, lamb, chicken, and pasta dishes. It's a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. The last wine is Machete from Orin Swift. This wine is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Grenache. It has a viscous consistency, powerful aromas of cassis, boysenberry, and ripe cherries are complemented by soft minerality and hints of dark chocolate. This wine starts smooth with dark plums, and a slight charred meatiness that floods to create a velvety texture that lingers into a beautiful finish. I honestly feel these wines will give you a wonderful tour of two different grapes that should work well as the Full bodied and rich, it weather boasts fruit-forward flavors gets a of blueberry, red raspberry, little cooler. and tart blackberry,
