NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2017 | EDITOR'S CORNER

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

F

irst of all, endless thanks for all the heartfelt messages regarding my column's return last month after a five month or so hiatus. Little did I realize the sheer number of readers that crave my preface to each issue of the magazine made me a little uncomfortable, actually. Just kidding, of course. Per the usual, my inbox was mostly flooded with unsolicited requests to spotlight such must-have merchandise as SwampButt Underwear; to publish diabolical political rants about issues unrelated to the tri-state; to feature obscure bands from seven states away. The list goes on. Regardless, it's good to be back. And I know that in due time you'll find a

way to express your gratitude. Hey, we all struggle with communicating in this technology-based world. It's scary to talk to people, I know. Now, on to November... a month synonymous with the Hadi Shrine Circus and shopping. Not to mention Thanksgiving - i.e., good food and even better drinks. You'll read about all of those things in the following pages, plus we chat with Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke and pay our respects to local veterans via a piece on the upcoming Fallen Comrades Ceremony at the National Guard Armory. We've also got the lowdown on annual community events like Kraftucky and

animal benefits hosted by It Takes a Village and PC Pound Puppies. But that's not all, folks. In addition, we sent our new food reviewer out to Evansville's latest Mexican hotspot, Salsarita's. So, stop inundating me with fawning emails and get to flipping! - TE

AARON LEWIS & BLACKBERRY SMOKE

"Sinners & Sanctified" Tour

O L D N AT I ON A L E V E NT S PLA ZA | N OVEMB ER 4 | 7 :3 0 PM

Blackberry Smoke's Charlie Starr on the passing of Tom Petty, life on the road and giving back

S

taind front man Aaron Lewis and Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke are currently on the road together, co-headlining the "Sinners & Sanctified" Tour throughout the Midwest and beyond. It's a musical union of good friends - and equally revered live acts - years in the making but perfectly-timed to sooth the souls of fans mourning the recent loss of Tom Petty. With songs like "Waiting for the Thunder" off of 2016's Like An Arrow and "Ain't Much Left of Me" from 2012's The Whippoorwill, Blackberry Smoke, in particular, capture the fire and grit of the Southern rock icon - yet the band's sound is all their own. Singer/guitarist Charlie Starr kindly took time out of his busy schedule - which currently includes studio work for the next album - to speak with News 4U ahead of the show at the Old National Events Plaza. Tom Petty was a huge influence on Blackberry Smoke. What was your reaction when you learned of his passing? Oh, man - it was just like a knife to the heart.

Actually, the band was in the studio and we all found out at the same time. But that was just that he had been found unconscious. It was later that night when the official word [of his passing] came out. I was with my wife and we got emotional, of course. And we talked about it, too, like, 'wow, this is so crazy.' Prince's passing was obviously tragic and horrible, but Tom Petty dying is like one of your buddies dying. There's just such a strong connection that we have - not just us and the band, but all of our generation - to his music, because, you know, he was Tom Petty for crying out loud. Another big influence on the band, Greg Allman - who contributed to last year's Like An Arrow - also passed away several months ago. Do you feel like the band

is carrying the torch for that Southern rock sound now? I don't think there is a torch - I don't think anybody can carry on what those amazing people accomplished. That's their legacy. I mean, we are obviously very respectful of them and love their music deeply. But we're just doing what feels right to us. I don't think that we could ever dream of being the next Petty or Allman. Like An Arrow has been out for a year now and continues to receive accolades. But your back catalog clearly still resonates with fans, too. Set lists are often heavy on 2012's The Whippoorwill, for instance. I think that there are a lot of songs on that record that are touchstones for our fans, and if we don't play them, they get angry (laughs). But, you know, we change it up. There are songs that we play every night - every night we play "Ain't Got the Blues," "One Horse Town"

"Blackberry Smoke, in particular, capture the fire and grit of the Southern rock icon - yet the band's sound is all their own."

and "Ain't Much Left of Me." But then we touch on songs from Holding All the Roses and a lot of songs from Like An Arrow - we'll even go back and get one off the first album from time to time. Considering the staggering amount of time the band has spent on the road over the last 15 years or more, how have you managed to keep both your musical relationships and personal relationships intact? Well, the plan has always been to take a little time off when it's really needed (laughs). You know, get away from one another for awhile. And our families... it's just something that they've come to understand over the years. It's just what we do, and really, it's not that much different from a traveling salesman - which I guess we kind of are. You know, we have it a lot better than a lot of military families. Sometimes those wives don't see their husbands for a couple of years - or vice-versa. Actually, most of our wives have tried traveling with us on the road, and they were like, 'nope, I'm staying home.' The last thing they want to do is jump on a tour bus with 12 other guys. As the primary songwriter, are you able to write on the road or just in the pockets of downtime that the band is afforded? I'm constantly noodling and then I get all of the editing done at home. And I have to engineer that from year to year - have to block off periods of time to be left alone for eight days or whatever. It used to be that I couldn't write on the road at all, because there's not enough quiet time, but it's become easier with the advancements in technology - meaning that you can almost make a record on your phone thanks to GarageBand and things like that. Will you at least be able to enjoy Thanksgiving off the road with your family? Oh, yeah - we come home at the end of November every year and we do a hometown show in Atlanta the night after Thanksgiving and then we're pretty much done for the year. Speaking of your show on November 24, this will be the band's fifth annual Holiday Homecoming. To date, the band has raised over $150,000 for children's cancer research. How did the show initially come about and is the charity personal to you? Well, the show idea comes from way back when R.E.M. used to do a holiday show at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. And then when they got too big to do that, Drivin N' Cryin took over. So, we just kind of adapted that idea from them as a nice tradition. And it's a good reason to come home and say, 'I'm home - I'm not leaving again (laughs).' The charitable organizations that we donate money to are very close to the band, especially the Children's Hospital and the American Cancer Society because our drummer Brit Turner's daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma several years ago - and she's a survivor, cancer-free. It was such an outpouring of love and financial help and just prayers and support from people. So what we do is, we have a VIP meet and greet and most of the proceeds from that go to those organizations. So, it's basically our fans making the donations. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com or call 812-4355770. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

FALLEN COMRADES CEREMONY EVANSVILLE NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY (WEST ENTRANCE) NOVEMBER 9 | 6:30 PM - 8 PM

Getting hope out there: Inaugural event designed to help heal area veterans, offer prospect of change

I

t's an incredibly sobering statistic: every day, 22 veterans commit suicide. Considering all that these brave soldiers have done for our country, it's incumbent on our community to address this epidemic. Thankfully, two local women with very personal connections to the military are way ahead of us. 44News anchor Melissa Schroeder and Sue Gipson, RN/CHPN at SouthernCare Hospice, have organized the inaugural Fallen Comrades Ceremony, an event designed to combat what's referred to as a "soul injury" - by definition, a penetrating wound within our deepest self that pierces the defenses of our ego and disrupts our fundamental identity. More broadly, the ceremony "an opportunity for veterans to heal from unmourned grief and unforgiven guilt from the deaths of comrades killed in war." Roger Schroeder

Walter Schroeder

10 |

Schroeder comes from a military family. Walter Schroeder, her grandfather, was a WWII veteran; her father Roger served

in Vietnam; her brother-in-law was a marine. And yet from the TV personality's perspective, there seemed to be a lack of recognition for service members in the local media. Schroeder's response was to start the "We Salute You" segment on 44News which airs two Thursdays a month - through which she met Gipson, a fellow passionate champion of veterans. Having worked in hospice for over 25 years, Gipson's devotion to our soldiers comes from a very personal place. "I'm married to a combat marine from Vietnam, and I'm also the mother of a combat marine," she explains. "I've actually had to send my baby boy out there into combat - that is horrible." In 2013, she transitioned into the role of Clinical Liaison for VA at SouthernCare and has developed an "unspoken bond" with many of the area's veterans who regard Gipson as a "marine by proxy" due to her husband Bruce's service. Like many combat marines, Bruce has struggled greatly with the after effects of war - or PTSD (which Gipson notes is different from a soul injury) - sometimes to the detriment of relationships and family harmony. But Gipson has never once questioned his love for her or their boys over the last 35 years; however, she continues to be frustrated by how both Hollywood and the media portray the disorder. "Everybody wants you to think that PTSD means you're crazy," she says. "My husband and others have lived under this stigma for such a long time. So I'm kind of a woman on a mission." That mission is now focused on the upcoming Fallen Comrades Ceremony for which Gipson attended soul injury

November 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Bruce & Sue Gipson leadership training in Tampa, FL, in April. Much to her relief, Bruce participated in the event there, and "the change in him was just profound. What he told Melissa Bruce Gipson two weeks ago is that he is now able to live life and love his wife - and you know I'm all about that," Gipson says. Schroeder, admittedly, is a little apprehensive about her father Roger attending the ceremony on November 9 - but also genuinely excited. "It's going to be really emotional for me - he has never really talked a lot about what happened [in Vietnam]. But as a lot of our veterans get older, they want to open up - they want their service to mean something."

The event is open to the public. All veterans, their family members, friends and caregivers are welcome to attend. The National Guard Armory is located at 3000 E. Division St.

Dollars that make a difference:

A benefit for Princess Carlee & Her Daddy FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES #427 | NOVEMBER 18 | 3PM - MIDNIGHT

Evansville Eagle auxiliaries joining forces to help Kentucky family struggling with medical costs

S

o many people in the tri-state need assistance, but few are as deserving of our attention as little Princess Carlee and her daddy, Josh (see pic on following page). Carlee has been going through an extremely difficult time over the last couple of years due to numerous health issues - a great physical and emotional burden to bear for such a small child. Only adding to the family's personal and financial struggles, Josh wrecked on his motorcycle this summer, resulting in countless broken bones as well as the amputation of his left hand. In short, the Weinhandl family has been put through the wringer beyond all comprehension with Carlee's mother Becca left to raise the couple's other two children while fighting for the recovery of her youngest child and husband. They desperately need the community's help. Princess Carlee and her daddy's story (as told by Becca) On November 2, 2015, we received one of our greatest blessings: a princess we named Carlee. She completed our family, but after three months of pure joy and happiness, our lives took a quick turn. One day we noticed Carlee starting to do things that just didn't seem normal. Her arms would tense up, her body would crunch, and she would let out the most terrifying cry. We took her to see her doctor who thought it could be acid reflux but referred us to a doctor in Louisville just to be sure. However, the appointment wasn't for two months, so I followed my motherly instincts and we drove her to the Kosair Children's Hospital ER a few days later. After the

14 |

doctor saw Carlee have an episode right there in the ER, she immediately admitted her. Tests were run, and the next morning the doctors gave us the bad news: infantile spasms, a rare, catastrophic form of epilepsy. Carlee was put on a steroid for treatment and after a week of being monitored, our baby girl was discharged. With medication and many follow ups, Carlee's spasms slowly began to fade away. She was developmentally delayed, and the medicine was having some side effects, but we were glad the seizures were gone. But eventually she developed other types of seizures and was started on a different seizure medication. We sought a second opinion in Cincinnati resulting in a further diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Carlee's spasms returned, worse than before. She was just 18 months old and couldn't even hold her own head up - she even had to have a feeding tube put in because she couldn't eat properly. Carlee cried all the time; she was in such pain. Eventually, I had to quit my job because we were constantly in and out of hospitals and Josh had to pick up crazy amounts of hours at work just to get us by. Not to mention our poor boys missed their parents. Doctors began to give up on Carlee, so Josh and I decided to seek alternative medicines. Giving up on our daughter was not an option for us. That's when we decided to move to Colorado and give cannabis a chance. From day one, Carlee's spasms disappeared; her smile came back and her tears dried up. She had gained head control and eventually learned to sit up on her own. She was doing fantastic.

November 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

We were thrilled to have our daughter back. After three months of treatment we returned to Kentucky to visit with family and friends and show Carlee off. On July 31, 2017, Josh was on his way home from his mother's house - Evansville to Owensboro, a simple 45 minute ride on his motorcycle. But he never came home. A sheriff arrived at my house that night and informed me that he had been in an accident. Josh had hit a guardrail and flew off of an overpass, breaking almost every bone in his body. And although he had a helmet on, the jar from the impact left him with a traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma in the ICU fighting for his life. His brain was swelling and things weren't looking good for him. But like his little girl, he is a fighter. Josh is now recovering in a rehab facility in Louisville. He had to have his left hand amputated and is learning how to do things with one arm - as well as learn how to walk again. Unfortunately, since Josh was in an accident we weren't able to return to Colorado for Carlee's treatments. And now her spasms are slowly returning and her pain is coming back along with her tears. Financially, we struggle day to day. Carlee needs the medicine that can save her life but it isn't legal in Kentucky. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. 84th Hadi Shrine Circus ForD Center | NOVEMBER 23-26

A tri-state family tradition: Long-running three ring circus continues to dazzle and amaze

I

ncredibly, 2017 marks the 84th edition of the Hadi Shrine Circus. It’s a remarkable run that has eclipsed virtually every other production in North America. Since it first debuted all those years ago, more than three million people have attended the circus - young and old alike. This wonderful tradition has become an integral part of the holidays, an event that the whole family can enjoy. Simply put, It just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the circus. Amazingly, the Hadi Shrine Circus keeps the show moving and the action non-stop for three solid hours. In fact, over the last several

years, the production has truly evolved, changing with the times to incorporate more special effects, including dramatic, dazzling lights and the energy of contemporary music to bring a lot more pop to traditional acts such as jugglers, acrobats and lion tamers. But as always, the animals are the true stars of the show - from the elephants to the lions, even the rescue dogs that are speciallytrained for the circus. And it’s comforting to know that they are all provided the greatest care. The organizers take the job of keeping them in good health very, very seriously and aim to set an example for the community. With all of the hard work and planning that goes into the circus, it’s no wonder that generations of families and performers keep coming back. Everyone involved puts their heart and soul into the production and in turn, the tri-state area continues to support this longstanding tradition in a big way. Most importantly, the circus allows the Hadi Shriners to keep doing all of their great charity work, so your attendance really does make a difference. FYI, new ticket prices start at just $16. And be sure to visit hadishrinecircus.com for a chance to be a Clown for a Day!

Show times: 11/23 (5pm); 11/24 (9:30am, 2pm, 7pm); 11/25 (9:30am, 2pm, 7pm); 11/26 (3pm). For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com or ticketmaster.com or call 800-7453000.

EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

LA TRAVIATA

PRESENTED BY OLD NATIONAL BANK VICTORY THEATRE | NOVEMBER 11 | 7 PM

Bringing opera back: Verdi's masterwork takes center stage for the EPO's November performance

S

urely you'll agree that Maestro Savia and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra hit it out of the park with late October's Wicked Divas performance. A smart mix of Broadway, opera, pop and more featuring Alli Mauzey and Nicole Parker - two very talented singers from the world of Broadway - the show appealed to music fans of all ages. Plus, the pair scored plenty of laughs with some spoton impersonations of some of their favorite divas throughout the years. And now it's on to November as the EPO prepares to bring opera back full force

with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's masterwork, La Traviata. Directed by Jon Truitt in collaboration with the Indianapolis Opera (with supporting roles and chorus from the University of Evansville opera program and members of the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus), this timeless favorite is certain to be a highlight of the EPO's season.

Doctor Grenvil - Oliver Worthington

First performed in 1853, La Traviata is based on La Dame aux Camélias, a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas. The three act opera initially met with a lukewarm response but after some revisions and, most importantly, the hiring of a more appropriately-aged singer to play the main character, Violetta, Verdi's creation achieved great success. La Traviata has since been staged in venues all over the world and continues to captivate audiences today with its exploration of the extremes of emotion, from exuberant celebration to unbridled passion and the ultimate sacrifice for love.

Gastone - Nicholas Rhoades

The Cast Jason Baldwin

Violetta Valéry - Emily Birsan (A criticallyacclaimed soprano known for her prominent interpretations of concert and operatic repertoire) Alfredo Germont - Jason Baldwin (An American tenor who has performed with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Utah Symphony & Opera, Opera Colorado and many more)

Flora - Danielle Everett James Annina - Dr. Alanna Keenan (Holds a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in vocal performance with a minor in musicology from Louisiana State University) Marquis D’Obigny - Eric McCluskey (An assistant professor of music at the University of Evansville, currently teaching applied voice and vocal diction) Giuseppe - Isaac Cooper Servant - Ben Luttrull Messenger - Adam Smith And just around the corner... the beloved Peppermint Pops concert! Two performances are coming up in early December (12/2 & 12/3) featuring tenor Tim King along with the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, Evansville Children's Choir, Evansville Ballet and Legacy Dance Company. Always a crowd-pleaser, this annual show puts everyone in the Christmas spirit as the Orchestra provides stirring accompaniment to all of your holiday favorites, songs that the whole family can enjoy. There's really no better way to usher in the winter season than with the festive sounds of the EPO at the Victory Theatre!

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2017 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

SALSARITA'S FRESH MEXICAN GRILL

3910 E. MORGAN AVE. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-437-2572

A

lready a success in Owensboro, Salsarita’s Fresh Mexican Grill recently opened a new tri-state location on Evansville’s east side at the intersection of Morgan Avenue and Stockwell Road. You've likely noticed it over the last month as the building's sharp lines and stark colors immediately catch the eye with a decidedly modern flair. They have a very broad range of offerings, from nacho chips piled high with fresh ingredients prepared there in the store to their famous and appropriately-named quesorito (a large burrito drizzled with their delicious queso, for the unfamiliar). If you haven’t tried this, you need to now! Other items on the menu include burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and salads. All of these can be loaded with any of their numerous ingredients, from numerous meats such as chicken, beef, and even shrimp to various types of rices, beans, salsas, and many vegetables. No matter what you or anyone in your group enjoys, there’s something for everyone.

Late at night but you want something besides standard fast food fare? No worries - their drive-thru is open late. While the lobby closes at 10 p.m. every night, the drive-thru is open until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Need food for a big meeting, presentation, or any other event? They also offer catering. Have them bring a taco or fajita bar (or both) to your next event. Salsarita’s is a welcome addition to the increasingly great selection of restaurants Evansville has to offer. Whether it’s a night with friends and family or a quick bite for lunch, give them a try as soon as you can!

They also offer a wide range of beverages beyond the standard soft drink offerings, iced tea, or bottled water. You can also try a margarita, either frozen or on the rocks. Or enjoy one of their numerous beer offerings, both domestic and craft.

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2017 | MUSIC

THE JANGLE SHEEP Jam on: Band of USI grads leaves crowds satisfied with intense mix of styles It's about 7:30 p.m. on a warm Wednesday night in Evansville, and local group the Jangle Sheep are plowing through "Battleground" - one of 15 tracks on their recently-released full length album, Leave Me Satisfied - in an east side rehearsal room. Even with no warm up, the guys go from 0 to 11 (obligatory Spinal Tap reference) in about five seconds and proceed to deftly navigate the requested song's wild mix of rock, progressive rock and punk rock. For five intensely loud minutes, the onslaught of live bass, drums and two guitars overtakes the tiny rental space; there's not much jangling going on, per se, just a full-on sonic assault. As the final blistering run of notes fades away, the immediate reaction from the peanut gallery is short and sweet: "holy crap." Guitarists Mike Cassidy and Travis Horton, bassist Jake Bethel and drummer Sean Adams should be used to that by now. For the last three years, they've been finetuning their unmistakable sound, adhering

to a strict rehearsal schedule at the aforementioned "Evansville Jam House" on East Division Street. "Three times a week for two hours - that was the practice commitment we wanted to stick with, the bare minimum of what we needed," Cassidy says. The dedication has paid off in spades - both on stage and on record. That's clear from the crowds the band draws at area venues like Lamasco Bar & Grill, Mojo's BoneYard and PG CafĂŠ as well as the love for Leave

band feel along with elements of jazz. It shouldn't work so well, but somehow it makes total sense in the context of these four easy-going, talented musicians who first crossed paths while attending USI.

"Travis and I met through a radio & TV program," Cassidy explains. "And Jake and I worked at the "the Jangle Sheep are best college radio station - The Edge. experienced live to fully Travis and I were going to start a appreciate the sophistication of band together, and he knew Sean the band's material" and I knew Jake. So we all started banging it out." And eventually the jams became songs, thanks in large part to Horton, who functions Me Satisfied - and especially from the as the primary creative spark. A Grateful sheer number of views online for their Dead fanatic, he's just as chill as you first official video, might expect and uncomfortable with "Indigo Vertigo." taking much credit. When asked if he ever Not bad at all for disagrees with the direction the rest of the a group with a guys steer his ideas, his response explains slew of seemingly why the Jangle Sheep are so in tune, so to incongruent speak. "I think that sometimes, but I don't influences. In ever say it," Horton admits with a laugh. addition to rock, "But usually if I don't like something at first, progressive rock I'll grow to really love it, and I'm glad that I and the occasional didn't deny the process. Often it becomes punk riff, the something that I would never have Jangle Sheep thought of." Further pressed about the also incorporate songwriting process, the guys all chime in a heavy jam with what's known as the "wrinkled shirt"

analogy - which goes something like this: Horton is the wrinkled shirt he has the initial idea. Then Cassidy takes it and irons it out, makes it all pretty. Adams is the ironing board and, well, Bethel is the fancy pair of pants. Discuss. This creative synergy - however odd the analogy - has resulted in a series of well-received recordings, including 2016's Just Let 'em Jangle and Leave Me Satisfied (with lovely cover art by Callie Poehlein), released in August. Both were produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Tony Soellner at Bootlegger Recording Studio on the west side of Evansville. Mercifully, he doesn't charge by the hour. "It's an arduous process - we really like to experiment," Adams says. "We don't have everything totally written down. [With Leave Me Satisfied] there were a lot of things that we did on the fly in the studio that turned out really awesome. Mike, especially, came up with a lot of amazing improvised solos." He's not kidding. The album is full of mind-bending fretwork as well as shifting tempos and complex structures but still manages to slip in a host of hooks and catchy vocal melodies by Bethel and Horton to leave the listener satisfied, indeed. Tracks like "Battleground," Roger, Roger" and "Horsehead" are incredibly well-crafted with a sonic punch not often heard on local recordings. Still, the Jangle Sheep are best experienced live to fully appreciate the sophistication of the band's material. As Bethel notes, they rarely play covers and avoid repeating themselves. "If we do a cover, we try to make it very memorable, very wacky," he explains. "Sometimes we make medleys out of our existing songs - we almost unconsciously change things every time because we have a lot of people that come to every show. We want to give them something a little different." Asked to name the band's wildest show to date, Cassidy doesn't hesitate. "Mesker Fest. We only played for 15 minutes, but the show had an incredible energy," he says. "The first song there were 100 people standing back - and then everybody stormed the stage. It was crazy." You're more likely to see the Jangle Sheep jamming for three hours or more these days - there's generally no skimping on the set list. Currently, the band is planning to branch out and schedule more shows in bigger cities such as Louisville, Nashville and St. Louis. And practice, of course. "The goal is to keep writing music and keep getting better. We're already looking ahead to the next album - that's just kind of our style." For more info, follow the Jangle Sheep on Facebook and check out their music on Bandcamp.

Holiday outfits: What to wear for every kind of Thanksgiving festivity

T

he holiday season is upon us once again and with that comes a whole lot of food, hot cocoa, family, and my personal favorite… SWEATERS! Here is your Thanksgiving Day outfit guide for every kind of festivity.

Pure Comfort: If your family is the casual type and values comfort over style, this is for you. A pair of soft jogger sweatpants paired with a soft off shoulder tee will provide an outfit that is both relaxing and acceptable for family photos. If you want to add a little more detail to your ensemble, add a pair of graphic socks for some added personal style. These can either be knitted

the TV rather than the dining room table on Thanksgiving Day, then rockin’ spirit wear for your favorite team is the only way to go. Want to add a little detail? Pair it with looser fitting boyfriend jeans and a cardigan for some added comfort.

Easy Transitions: For the past few years, this has been my go-to inspiration for my Thanksgiving Day outfit. I start out with a long tunic or shirt and pair it with patterned tights and either close tied heels or short boots. The secret is if you wear a looser fitting top, you can eat as much as you want. Once dinner is over, you can change into looser leggings and socks for an easy transition while still looking nice.

Holiday Traditional: If your holiday consists of an elegant meal and a large family, put on a dress that has a strong structure and pair it with a chunky cardigan. This will allow added warmth and detail.

Football Fanatic: If your family sits around

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH!

GUS: Gus is a 9-year-old male Catahoula Leopard Dog. He is the FINAL DOG remaining from the Hillview hoarding situation. Thanks to an agreement reached in the court case, Gus is safe and can finally go up for adoption! Gus loves everyone and everything – cats, dogs, kids, you name it. He has a low- to moderateenergy level and would be great in just about any home. He is well-loved by VHS staff, volunteers, and at Cardio for Canines. He’s also becoming more & more famous… he and some of his friends rode on the VHS’ float in the Fall Festival Main Parade last month! Gus’s adoption fee is $100 and he’s neutered, microchipped, and ready to go home today!

DORITO: Dorito is an 8-year-old male orange tabby. He’s a “senior” ready to “graduate” into his new home! This dude is very laid-back and likes other cats. He’s one of about 250+ cats up for adoption at VHS right now, who desperately need homes or foster homes! His $30 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and FeLV/FIV test. November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month, and older animals like Dorito are no less deserving of a “retirement home.” Stop by and ask for Dorito!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT STEPHANIE NORRICK & CAPTAIN CAULIFLOWER

About six months ago, Evansville's Stephanie Norrick and her husband were finally ready to adopt another animal after the passing of their 14-year-old cat last November. They both adore dogs, but Stephanie has always been particularly fond of cats, so the couple headed to the VHS in search of a new senior feline friend. "As much as I love kittens, they are a lot of work," she says. "I didn't know if we had the energy for that, so we wanted to find an older one that was more mellow." Sure enough, after spending some quality time in the Cat Lounge, the Norricks felt drawn to a fiveyear-old, laidback character with a cauliflower ear named Turner who stayed aboard the "ship" inside the Lounge throughout their visit and purred every time they petted him. Captain Cauliflower - or "CC" as they renamed him soon set sail for his new home on the west side. According to Stephanie, the transition to his new surroundings went pretty well, apart from an initial idiosyncrasy or two. "We always allow cats on our furniture, so I would pick CC up and put him on the couch, but he would jump right off," she explains. "I theorized that it's probably his first time living in a house - it took him a couple of days to get used to it, but now we can't get him off of it (laughs)." Another successful adoption!

OREO: Yeah, yeah, a black & white cat named Oreo… we know. But he’s probably thinking, “I’m an older guy set in my ways. So don’t change my name. Get off my lawn.” Actually, the grumpy-old-man stereotype doesn’t really fit Oreo otherwise. He’s a sweet boy who keeps getting overlooked because of his age! Which by the way, is around 11 years. But cats’ lifespans are about 18-20 years on average, so he’s still looking for commitment. Oreo can go home today already neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and FeLV/FIVtested for only $30.

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

Is complaining about life just a part of being human?

One of the things I’ve noticed about my Facebook feed is that there are a lot of complaints. Everyone seems to be complaining about something. The list includes whether or not it is right that you should have to pay extra for extra sauces for chicken strips, whether it is appropriate for certain people to wear certain clothing, and whether or not certain people should be allowed to do something with which someone else might take offense. Then there are those who list every ache and pain, gripe about traffic, or go on at great lengths about how life just isn’t fair. I get that into every life comes disappointment and disillusionment. This is part of being human. We can’t stop all of it and we can’t prevent all of it. But, let’s be honest: at our worst, we still have it a lot better than most of the people in the world. Much of what prompts our grumbling falls under the label of “first world problems.” We don’t have a good cell signal, the car is acting up, the meal we had at the restaurant wasn’t all we hoped it would be. And while we’re grousing about how terrible everything is, hurricanes reek destruction, earthquakes kill hundreds, wildfires burn thousands of acres, and we are just fine. Maybe instead of complaining and droning on about how awful it all is, we could take a moment and realize – in spite of everything – just how good we have it. Words to Whitney

I

can’t remember exactly the first time I met Whitney Patterson, whose column "Words from Whitney" used to occupy this space on the adjacent page… but I remember the first time we truly talked. It was at Deerhead. I’d heard they were doing open mic nights, and I missed performing live. Even though I should’ve been used to it, for some reason, I was nervous. Maybe it was just from being in a new town; I moved to Evansville in 2011, and it took a long time to muster up the courage to finally play for a crowd again. I honestly don’t know how well the performance actually went; what I do remember was that she made me feel welcome. We talked about music we loved and found out we had that - and a lot of other beliefs - in

common. Since we both shared a penchant for voicing our opinions - sometimes very loudly - she suggested me for the very column you’re reading now. I love writing this each month, and I owe this pleasure to her. I’ve been trying to focus on the best memories I have of her, like the party she invited my wife and I to. We had a great time with everyone there, and the night ended with an impromptu jam session I was lucky enough to join in on. It’s one of my favorite nights of the last few years, and I want to thank her for that as well. But perhaps the greatest thing about her is that stories like mine seem all too common. I can’t count how many people I’ve seen come forward

to share stories of how she positively impacted their lives. Stories of love and compassion for everyone she knew, and stories of her unbridled passion. I soon realized just how lucky we all were for having the privilege of knowing her. I mentioned her passion, and if there was one thing that I could characterize her with, that would be it. She felt strongly about many groups and causes, and I hope everyone can appreciate just how fervent her efforts were. But greater than even the magnitude of her efforts were her intentions. I know with every fiber of my being that she was fighting for what she believed to be right and just. She was as heartfelt and genuine as they come. Please - tell those you care about you love them every day.

MAYBE I'M JUST with Johnny Fletcher GETTING OLD...

rankly, I'm too tired to debate healthcare, anthem-kneelers, immigration, North Korea and such - I'll leave that to people much smarter and more motivated than me - so I'm going to stick with the things that are really burning me up in my old age. Most people don't even watch TV anymore, apparently, but there are still a few cable dinosaurs like me out there getting bombarded daily with insidious ads that siphon off brain cells, like the latest Chevy truck commercials. Actually, allow me to digress for a moment by uttering two shiverinducing words: Trivago guy. Or the "poster boy for ourtime.com" as I often refer to him when no one is around. That ever-smirking, salt and pepper-haired chap really grates on the nerves. And he really sucks at doing two things at once - like putting on a

belt and shaving at the same time. Sad. But back to my main point. The suave, bearded dude who features in each Chevy spot is somehow even more annoying than Trivago guy - a notable achievement. Something about him standing there with a clipboard surrounded by wide-eyed regular folks (not actors!) assembled to take in and behold the wonder of a shiny new pick-up just irritates. And then he makes each person parrot back awards that the company has won at light speed until they are simply breathless with excitement (lottery winners don't even get this animated). Best of all, there's a cool, laidback man-bunner who, much to the obviously rehearsed delight of his compatriots, responds, "that's one bad mamma jamma!" Hilarious. I know, it's just TV and all. Why get so worked up? Well, I

would have moved on to something more pressing and socially relevant, but then Chevy ramped everything up with a new, painfully ridiculous spot. Surely you've seen it. Beardy is back, but this time - wait for it - he's posing as a really inept valet parking attendant! See, he can never seem to keep things straight and repeatedly brings people the wrong car back - which just happens to be a 2018 Chevy hybrid SUV or something. But luckily for him, no one minds that he's terrible at his job. Instead, they hop inside this dream vehicle and dream about driving it home. Then, reality check - these poor schmucks must resign themselves to living with their current $50,000 ride. Now that's injustice!

Many Democrats were upset about his decision to stay, including Indivisible, the left's answer to the Tea Party. Indivisible comes from the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party. Sanders, who ran against eventual party nominee Hillary Clinton, was seemingly treated unfairly by the Democratic establishment. This tension from both factions has trickled down to politics locally. The Democrats have lost more than they've won in the last decade - both locally and nationally. Their problems stem from losing identity, failure to recruit electable candidates, and being outspent by the local GOP. To turn the tide, they need to get people enthused. There's the establishment who supported Gail Riecken who eventually got trounced in the last Evansville mayoral election. Then you've got the Sanders-supporting Indivisible. Sanders won Vanderburgh County in last year's primary by over 1,500 votes. The party can no longer ignore Indivisible and consider them a small minority. Since Danks is back as Chairman, he might want to consider finding someone within Indivisible to serve as his Vice Chairman. He also might consider recruiting candidates from Indivisible to see how successful they would be in upcoming elections.

"THE TALLEST IN THE WORLD" by John Thurgood

F

or an entire summer James Gregory's uncle was the tallest man in the world. A parade was organized in his honor, and he was carted through town on a flatbed trailer stacked with hay, pulled by a John Deer tractor. A cavalcade of dirt bikes and Harleys trailed behind him. The mayor was in it, too. He drove his orange Corvette at the head. His wife sat in the passenger seat, throwing mini tootsie rolls out to the crowd. People yelled and cheered. They said that we were the tallest. And we felt like it was true. The heads of all of our dads towered above, waving to Corbin Gregory, as he waved his massive hand back at us. We had never heard of Mozambique, but a man from there had held the record up until that summer. James said it was in Africa, and we believed him, because it seemed like a place where giants lived, a place of magic and fantastic creatures. Our town was nothing like that. The only mystery we had was the secret ingredient to the King Cakes Mrs. Beaumont sold to the grocery store come Mardi Gras. Smoke moved over the cane fields at the end of fall, but that was no mystery. There was nothing magical about farming. After the parade, we stopped seeing Corbin, the tallest man, around town. He had been so easy to spot, and we missed that special feeling of seeing him lumber toward us with a smile half-cocked like he had something special to say. It was almost a relief that he never did, because news coming from such an intimidating source could never be very good. As young as we were, we were old enough to understand that good news never moved downward. His absence was replaced by The Corbin Burger at the drivein, a Corbin Shake at the ice cream stand. They even named a dinner special after him at the steak house: a 72 ounce sirloin with a baked potato and grilled carrots. Some said the mayor was talking about changing the town motto to “The Home of Giants.” That didn't last though, because as suddenly as it had all started, it came to an end. Someone had discovered a man in Turkey who was over eight feet tall, the result of a tumor effecting his pituitary gland. We were no longer the tallest, and we didn't have Corbin, either. Some said he moved west to be a professional wrestler or an actor, but it didn't matter to us, because we were only kids. Everyone was taller than us.

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE Where are the romantic comedies?

T

he Proposal, 13 Going on 30, No Strings Attached, Friends With Benefits, Going the Distance, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 50 First Dates, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Never Been Kissed, 27 Dresses, Sweet Home Alabama, Something’s Gotta Give, Hitch and The Ugly Truth: these are some of the best contemporary romantic comedy movies of the 21st century. Yet, there hasn’t been a breakout one in years. In fact, the lack of romantic comedies being made is appalling. All of the movies I listed are rated highly on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and are quite commonly known not just in the U.S., but all over the world. The reason is not just because of the big name stars that pull attention towards them, but because of how sweet the romance is and how funny the hijinks are. There are way too many serious, dramatic movies being released and although I appreciate biopics, historical depictions of the past, super hero movies, sci-fi fantasy blockbusters and remakes, we need more romantic comedies filling up our screens. Romantic comedies are the kinds of movies you can pop in and watch at a friend's house with all of your girls or when you're just feeling down and need a pick-me-up. They aren’t overly comedically grotesque and overladen with penis and fart jokes or explicit sex. They are the perfect balance of falling in love and laughing your ass off. There hasn’t been a truly incredible romantic comedy - or really any at all for that matter - released since 2011 and that is a travesty. Romantic comedies are dynamic and engaging. They speak universally to audiences and it’s mindblowing to me that it’s been roughly six years since No Strings Attached, Friends With Benefits and Bridesmaids came out in 2011. 27 Dresses is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time, with strong character development and growth, a steamy and tumultuous romance between the two main characters, some witty best friends with their own shenanigans and a sweet b-plot between two sisters who end up learning a lot about each other and finally make amends after years of unspoken tension. I am personally requesting that all movie studios seriously consider hiring some screenwriters to craft some more signature scripts about two people falling in love and all of the hilarious obstacles that come their way. They’ll make millions at the box office and viewers will go home happy. It’s a win-win. Maybe that should be the title of the next great romantic comedy. It could be about two competitors who end up falling in love. Now get to work, studio heads. - Marisa Patwa

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2017 | FILM REVIEWS

13 DEMONS CINEDIGM/DVD At its base, 13 Demons is a predictable movie. Three characters sit down to play a dusty RPG, a la Dungeons and Dragons, and horror ensues. Innocent people are killed, friendships are broken and the arc of the story plummets into no real determinable statement about anything. Are we too reliant on consumer culture? Is there too much violence in games? Why is a short attention span such a negative thing anyway? We don't know. Not after watching this movie, at least. Part of that problem is due to the director's use of “the long take.” It might seem like not much happens in this film because there are a lot of moments where literally not much is happening. A brooding shot of Stephen Grey as Torkul of Darkhaven here, a close up of Michael Cunningham as Abelsworth of the High Wind there, and pretty soon the movie is over. These long pauses throughout the movie beg for inspection. They demand a certain amount of attention, and for that alone, the movie gains a patina of merit. However, that need goes unsatisfied as the movie takes a turn toward camp, and not in a good way. There is one saving grace to this film. It has some especially chilling monologues. Before each roll of the dice, every player must read from the game's playbook, and the creator of the game 13 Demons must have been a bonafide wordsmith, because they are lyrical gold, laced with vivid imagery and gruesome action. All in all, the movie 13 Demons does more for turning off the movie and actually playing the game 13 Demons than it does for actually staying to see the credits. - John Thurgood

Gerald's Game

www.showplacecinemas.com

INTREPID PICTURES/NETFLIX

Stephen King did it again. Gerald's Game is a slim psychological thriller that grabs its audience from the start, and doesn't let go. With this adaptation, Mike Flanagan proves he can bring the suspense, and he doesn't hold back when it counts. Parts of this film are scream-out-loud frightful and others stomach-churningly gruesome. As the plot unfolds, the main character, played by Carla Gugino, is forced to make some difficult choices, and in the process, she is also forced to see her true self as the main catalyst for the situation in which she finds herself. All of this pressure brings her character to a boiling point, and the finale delivers. Viewers are pressed to ask themselves if they would make that same decision, and the truth is: not many would. This display of selfdiscovery and wherewithal comes through by virtue of a great performance from Gugino, who single-handedly carries the emotional weight of this film for a solid hour and 43 minutes. Comparable most notably to another Steven King adaptation, Misery, Gerald's Game is, for the most part, a single location film, and like its ilk, the film's plot relies heavily on an internal struggle to lead the audience toward each plot point. The main difference here is the way this internal conflict represents itself. And therein might lay the true takeaway of this film: maybe the true problem isn't the shame we feel, but the form it takes. - John Thurgood

BLUES WITH BRAGIN ANDY T BAND Double Strike American Showplace Music Guitarist Andy T returns with a new lineup and the album Double Strike, a traditional blues recording that also explores new paths. The Texas Horns, featuring "Kaz" Kazanoff on tenor sax and John Mills on baritone sax, set the tone with their first notes on “I Want You Bad,” the opening track. The horns keep the groove swinging while Andy and special guest Anson Funderburgh provide stellar guitar riffs in the middle and end of the song. Nick Nixon returns with vocals on “Deep Inside,” a steady rocking number that features Larry van Loon on piano. The harmonica playing from Greg Izor rounds out the song very nicely. “Juanita” sees Al Gomez on trumpet join the other members of The Texas Horns and Nixon on vocals, along with steady piano work from van Loon. “Sad Times” introduces special guest Mike Flanigin on Hammond B3 organ. Powerful vocals from Alabama Mike, Andy’s guitar and the Texas Horns connect with listeners on a deep level. “I Was Gonna Leave You” features a funky bass line throughout the song from Johnny Bradley. - Paul Bragin

LEW JETTON & 61 SOUTH Palestine Blues Coffee Street Records After the wildly successful release of 2016’s Rain, Lew Jetton & 61 South return with Palestine Blues, a new 10 song collection. Opening track “Will I Go To Hell” is an up-tempo country blues song that ponders big questions about how our actions affect others. In addition to Jetton’s guitar, the harmonica playing of JD Wilkes bursts through brightly. “Oh My My” features a heavy guitar track from Jetton. The guitar playing matches the heaviness of the lyrics about how difficulties in life seem insurmountable at times. “Sold Us Out” looks at the influence of politicians and corporations whose self-centeredness blinds them to the plight of the average citizen experiencing hard times. The jazz-influenced ballad “Drinking Again” discusses the reasons why people turn to the bottle and the effect it has on the people around them. Drummer Eric Eicholtz keeps everything together with some nice percussion. “Christ Have Mercy” begins with a powerful bass riff from Otis Walker. The song deals with a man recognizing his faults and attempting to improve himself. Jetton’s guitar work in the middle of the song really stands out. For many years, Lew Jetton and 61 South fine-tuned their sound playing in southern Indiana and Kentucky. Help promote local/ regional music and pick up a copy of Palestine Blues. - Paul Bragin

DUCKTAILS Jersey Devil New Images On May 25, 2016, Matt Mondanile left Real Estate for good to concentrate on Ducktails fulltime, and over a year later, the world was given Jersey Devil, Ducktails' sixth studio album. The slow move Mondanile has been making over the past two albums toward a more popular sound hits a critical mass with this new release. It seems that Mondanile has turned his back on that original lo-fi, hypnagogic pop sound that had initially helped Ducktails escape the shadow of Mondanile's much more well-known project, Real Estate. Not that it's all bad. The move that this album takes is interesting in that it almost feels like an apology. As neo-psychedelia and glo-fi falls deeper into a pit of recycled muzak that many critics are referring to as vaporwave, it is refreshing to see someone like Mondanile approach that same genre from a different angle, borrowing from smooth jazz and consumer culture instead of sampling from it. The result is an album that doesn't stand out as much as Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics had when it was released, but instead finds itself pushing into a crowded field of mediocrity. Hopefully, Mondanile defines himself among the lot. - John Thurgood

MARIKA HACKMAN I'm Not Your Man Sub Pop One might look at Marika Hackman's short, illustrious career as a young woman born into a situation that yielded well. Simple luck. In high school, she made incidental relationships with important people in both the music and fashion industries. She recorded with Johnny Flynn for her first single. Early demos of her songs were featured in advertisements for Burberry. All this would seem like a dream. But the thing is: those early songs are good. “Monday Afternoon,” which was featured in the Burberry ad, was folk-inspired pop reminiscent of Inara George. She was England's answer to Angel Olsen, it seemed, and her first album, We Slept at Last, proved as much. It was a broody collection of heartache and woe. Her latest album, I'm Not Your Man, has taken a turn away from folk, toward a more pop and polished approach. Much like Olsen, Hackman manages to re-invent her style while holding onto an essence that is wholly herself. From songs like “Boyfriend” that seem playful to songs like “I'd Rather Be With Them” that seem full of hurt, Hackman brings to light a picture of the world steeped in melancholy, chilled with reproach and turned way up. It hints at who she is, but more importantly, it's a soft nudge for us all to join her. - John Thurgood

*ASK Discipline & Pressure Ground Sound Punk bands formed by genre icons can be hit or miss. For every truly great band (Fugazi, Jets to Brazil) or solo career (Bob Mould), there are plenty that fall flat. (I’ll save myself the potential hate mail and not mention any…) Luckily, Indiana’s own *Ask do their punk pedigree proud with a great album, Discipline & Pressure. Featuring members of legendary hardcore punk founding fathers, Zero Boys, the band crafts a unique sound far from the sociopolitical punk of the early ‘80s. These tracks bear far more in common with Dinosaur, Jr. (“Superhero Flower”) and surf rock (“Sin Is On My Side”) than Minor Threat and straight-edge. And that’s certainly not a bad thing. Elements of Rolling Stones-esque bluesy riffs are peppered throughout songs such as “She’s Moving In,” and “Motion Sickness” wouldn’t be out of place on a Sonic Youth record. The vocal melody of “Game’s Up” is one of the most earnest yet catchy hooks I’ve heard in a long time, while “New Royalty” and “Neurotic Gods” marry jangly guitar lines with classic synth sounds. Discipline & Pressure is one of those rare albums that maintains artistic integrity yet appeals to a broad audience. Give it a listen. - Jonathan Gluff

THE DARKNESS Pinewood Smile Cooking Vinyl The Darkness is one of those bands; the kind where everyone knows that one song (namely, “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” from 2003’s Permission to Land), but rarely can name any others. Given that track’s nigh-castrato vocals and the accompanying appropriately outlandish music video, one would be forgiven for writing them off as nothing more than a novelty act who liked Queen and David Lee Roth a little too much. While Pinewood Smile likely won’t win over anyone who doesn’t enjoy their brand of over-the-top rawk, it does show that they do execute it well. After a disappointingly serious - and seriously disappointing - fourth album, this release feels like a return to form. The trademark torrent of tonguein-cheek innuendo and obscenities is back in full force; gone are the illadvised faux-viking pseudo-epics of The Last of Our Kind. Guitar nerds, fear not - singer/lead guitarist Justin Hawkins’ signature stratospheric falsetto once more rivals only his playing in terms of sheer outrageousness. He and his bandmates have once again proven they’re at their best when they aren’t taking themselves too seriously. - Jonathan Gluff

THROWBACKS:

A fresh look at old albums THE PLUGZ Better Luck (1981) Fatima

Some might recognize The Plugz from their Spanish version of Johnny Rivers' “Secret Agent Man” called “Hombre Secreto,” which was featured on the Repo Man soundtrack. The Plugz were responsible for most of that movie's score, including instrumentals. That soundtrack was the last piece of music the band produced, but it was only a small mark on the list of accomplishments that would garner the band a cult following. Coming from the Los Angeles punk scene of the late 70's, The Plugz were playing alongside X, Circle Jerks and The Germs, but they were less aggressive. Like their contemporaries, their songs focused on growing up with feelings of alienation and listlessness, but their stories weren't coming from the suburbs, they were coming from the barrio. The Plugz were considered to be one of punk rock's first Latino bands, from a very small list, and it shows in a lot of their songs. “Electrify Me,” the title song from their first album, was a bottoms-up love ballad. Not many bands from that era were putting that level of vulnerability into their music. That first album was remarkable, but they seemed to hit a stride with their second, Better Luck, a saxophone-infused punk/ranchera that plays like straight up rock & roll. This is an album for the ultimate collection. - John Thurgood

HOT SNAKES Automatic Midnight (2000) Swami Records I decided to review an album by one of my favorite bands: Automatic Midnight by Hot Snakes. My choice was simple: I considered reviewing the latest album from the torchbearers of driving post-hardcore, METZ; however, it sounded so much like Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes - two bands orbiting the nucleus of guitarist John Reis and singer/guitarist Eric Froberg (or Rick Froberg, or Rick Fork, or whatever pseudonym he’s currently going by) - that I decided to take John’s cue and pour out my adulation of this album by the latter of those two acts. From the unrelenting downpicked guitars of barnburners like "If Credit's What Matters I'll Take Credit," “No Hands,” and “10th Planet” to the churning slow-boiling energy of “Salton City” and “Our Work Fills the Pews,” the album grabs a hold of you and never lets go. And just for good measure, Reis (best known for his band Rocket from the Crypt) takes over the lead vocal for “Mystery Boy.” Despite lacking the melodic sensibilities of its successor, this album still sounds just as relevant today. - Jonathan Gluff

NOVEMBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. Quaff On! Common Necessity

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

This local (Nashville, IN) milk stout was the one I saved for last. Truthfully, I’ve always avoided hazelnut coffees because the flavor seemed too strong and artificial. With apprehension I poured it up. It’s very dark - almost black and displays a meek, half finger airy dark beige that quickly fades away. Thankfully, the aroma isn't overwhelming with hazelnut. It’s a pleasant balance of hazelnut, roasted malts and sweetness. The taste follows the nose with even more emphasis on that milk stout sweetness. By slowly sipping it down and allowing it to warm up a bit, I actually enjoyed it. Congratulations, Quaff On! This is my favorite of your brews.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A thick tan head with decent retention tops this milk stout when poured into an English pub glass. Notes of roasted malt, sweetness and nuttiness from the hazelnuts used in the brewing process fill the nose. The sweetness and hazelnuts remain on the tongue with the first sip of the beer, followed by some coffee notes and more hazelnut in the finish. Pair it with desserts featuring chocolate and hazelnuts.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a nice, dark black beer and I can smell the coffee as soon as I pour it into my glass. The beer is very sweet and I enjoy the coffee, chocolate and hazelnut flavors. Some stouts can be a little bitter but this one is very smooth. I almost gave this beer a 5 - it's as close to a top rating as any beer has come in recent memory.

Golden Road Sunset Coffee

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

Golden Road Brewing calls Sunset Coffee an Oatmeal Milk Stout with coffee. It pours up very dark brown with a humble light tan head. The aroma is all about coffee. There’s some dark roasted malts there too, of course. The taste is sweet with roasted barley and dark coffee. There’s a nice balance of malts and coffee with a subtle hop kiss on the finish. Overall, I like it and feel most stout lovers will, too.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick tan head forms on this dark oatmeal stout after pouring it into an English pub glass. Roasted malt and coffee scents dominate the smell. Sweet malt flavors hit the tongue first, followed by the roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate flavors. Pair it with a hearty dish like barbecue or your favorite chocolate dessert to help accentuate flavors and balance the sweetness. Add a scoop of ice cream for a float.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is also a black beer and very similar to the Common Necessity but not quite as good. But maybe if had I tried this one first I would have had a different opinion. It has that strong coffee flavor and aroma which I enjoy, but it has some funky flavor in the finish that I don't care for. A solid beer from a brewery I haven’t heard of; I may have to try this one again.

War Pigs Foggy Geezer

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

This one’s a collaboration brew by Three Floyds of Munster, IN and Mikkeller of Copenhagen, Denmark. It pours a hazy rich yellow color with a two finger head and plenty of lacing. Its aroma is light and mostly of citrusy hops. The taste hits the tongue with a complex combination of citrusy hops followed by subtle pale malts. Assuming you enjoy IPAs it’s very drinkable and light tasting overall. You’d never guess that it has an 8% ABV so enjoy accordingly.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head rests on top of this India Pale ale. The hop scent reaches the nose even before putting it in the glass. It boasts a combination of fruity and pine notes. The first sip of the beer seems mild at first, but the hops come through a few seconds later and stay on the tongue during the very long finish. People who like IPAs will want to try this. Pair it with spicy cuisine.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a hazy, straw-colored beer with a sweet hops aroma. Like every other 3 Floyds beer, it's infused with hops. It's pretty easy to drink but like some other beers, it has some weird flavor in the finish - a flavor that I can't put my finger on. Actually, it may be related to the hops but I'm not sure. It's just an average beer.

hops, grass, caramel, floral and a bit of citrus. The taste mirrors the aroma and is quite nice, actually. Just enjoying one bottle/ glass it really grew on me. It’s more hoppy than what a Scottish ale would usually be, but thanks to the maltiness and other things going on here, creates a compelling overall ale experience.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

Three Floyds calls this one a Scottish style ale. It pours up a hazy light golden copper color with an airy one finger off-white head. A lot of lacing too. The nose is dank resinous

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head crowns this amber India Pale ale after pouring it into an English pub glass. A moderate amount of hops control the nose. A balance of malt sweetness and bitter hops hit the tongue with the first

tasting, with the hops taking over first and the malt returning in the finish. This beer could pair well with spicy Mexican food. It could also work alongside Creole or Cajun dishes like jambalaya or gumbo.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a hazy, amber-colored beer. I like the sweet hops flavor. I consider this a lighter version of Zombie Dust, but then again I don’t think I have had a beer from 3 Floyds that wasn’t loaded with hops. I guess I consider this a better-than-average “light” IPA. It's good but not great.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

A look into the future: Weather conditions and wildfires having big impact on wine industry

L

ast month, northern California was over-taken by wildfires in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties. These are some of the major wine producing areas in the country, so please be aware that wines of the 2017 vintage from these areas will either be scarce, or not available from certain wineries. Because of the warm weather in these areas, the harvest was a little earlier than normal, so a lot of the harvest was already processed and in fermenters. If the facilities were not affected by the fires, then the wine is a couple of years from your table, but if the facilities were leveled, like Paradise Cove in Santa Rosa, then you may be waiting for years for them to recover. Now, many of the wineries are family run and the community is very tight; I am certain that if help is needed, the other undamaged wineries will pitch in and help those who are in the rebuilding phase. If you thought, “That’s OK, I like wines from Europe anyway,” well the news is not good there, either! In April, there was a deep freeze in France that damaged as much as 90% of some producers' vines! The Bordeaux Region was especially hard hit. This will have an adverse effect on imports of wine from the region. I have seen headlines that said, “French grape harvest is the worst since 1945!” If you are looking for Italian wines, there was a drought that reduced their production to historic lows. So when the 2017 vintage come to market, look for a shock when there is so little

available. The good news is that South Africa is having a wonderful year in spite of a drought there. Also, look for wines from South America - they are inexpensive, abundant and very well made.

Marques De Caceres, Tempranillo/ Garnacha Blend - Rioja, Spain: A big, fruit forward rosé with bright acidity and a bold smokiness on the palate. The perfect wine for smoked turkey and cranberry sauce.

Now, let’s get down to the present.

Also give these wines a try:

Thanksgiving is coming soon; hopefully, the pile of candy you have left over from Halloween is gone and you know the folks are coming to be underwhelmed again this year. With that in mind you may as well take them on with a glass of wine in one hand, and the bottle in the other! Trying to pair the wine with all the foods that end up on a Thanksgiving Day table is impossible; there are too many conflicting flavors all competing for attention! So, let’s just look at the main entrée and cross our fingers for the sides! My “go-to” wine for the day is French rosé. The flavors are big enough to stand up to glazed ham yet subtle and crisp enough to work with turkey. Also, another plus for having rosé at the ready is that it works great as the wine served with the cheese tray starter!

Divining Rod Pinot Noir - Willamette Valley, Oregon: This is a nice drinking wine - earthy with a soft, dark fruit flavor. One of the few from Oregon that is reasonably priced! A great wine that plays well with glazed ham, smoked turkey, and for those who live dangerously, deep fried turkey!

My recommendations for Thanksgiving Day rosés are: Cardwell Hill Pinot Noir Rose - Willamette Valley, Oregon: A fruit forward rosé with deep rose color and wonderful strawberry tartness with soft fruit undertones. Should work well with glazed ham and sweet potatoes.

Trumpeter Pinot Noir - Mendoza, Argentina: Another wine that should work well and will not break the bank. For $9.99 a bottle, it's a lot of bang for the buck! This wine has a soft tannin that will work well with that prime rib dinner, but has wonderful berry notes and crisp acidity that will play well with ham or turkey. I hope this information works for you this holiday season. Remember, wine is a great hostess gift for those who want to come home to a clean kitchen and an empty fridge. Have a great holiday season, stay safe, and chill out with a glass of wine. Walt
