MULTI-PLATINUM COUNTRY STAR BRINGING BACK THE "GOOD OLE DAYS" AT THE OCC With eight number one singles and a host of CMA and ACM awards under his belt , Tracy Lawrence is the definition of a country music star. The 50-yearold Texas native first made waves in 1991 with the release of his debut album, Sticks & Stones, featuring the chart-topping title track and a trio of top ten hits: "Today's Lonely Fool," "Runnin' Behind," and "Somebody Paints the Wall." Remarkably, Lawrence outdid himself with the follow up, 1993's Alibis, which produced no less than four number ones, including "Can't Break It to My Heart," "Alibis," "My Second Home" and "If the Good Die Young." This incredible run of hits continued with 1994's I See It Now, Lawrence's third album for Atlantic Records. In addition to "Texas Tornado" - his sixth number one single in three years - the platinum-certified release spawned a trio of top two hits: "As Any Fool Can See," "If the World Had a Front Porch" and the title track. Yet, Lawrence's biggest song was still to come. Debuting in March of 1996, "Time Marches On" raced to the top of the charts, just one of four major hits off the album of the same name. Rest assured Lawrence is still going strong at the half-century mark, thanks in part to solid releases like 2017's Good Ole Days, a duets album featuring some of the biggest names in country music today. He'll be supported by Owensboro's very own Blackford Creek. For tickets and more info, visit owensborocenter.com. The OCC is located at 501 W. 2nd St. in Owensboro.

a particular song is right for your vocal style?
Basically, I can tell as we're writing it if it's a song for me or Noah. There's a couple of songs every once in a while where I'll go in and I'm ready to sing them - and I get in there and sing it and I listen to my voice and it just doesn't fit the song. And then I hand it to Noah and it's great, because he's an incredible singer; it's nice to have that luxury. And there's actually times when Noah goes in to sing a song and then I go take a stab at it and I go, 'wow, I actually sound good on it.' So, it just depends on what's appropriate for the song. Has there been an ebb and flow in regards to your working relationship with Noah?
We've been really close. Our professional relationship has outlasted a lot of marriages, you know? And it's lasted a lot longer than some band relationships as well. You know, we've settled into a real comfortable dynamic, I think. He's been in the band for a long time - he knows he's part of the family and there's loyalty there on both sides. With being this far into a career together, you just get comfortable. Certain things that might be trivial to other people just really aren't to us. Lay It On Down features a number of scorchers, particularly
"Nothing But the Night." Is there a good story behind that one?
Yeah! Marshall Altman, who produced the record with me...actually, we went into the studio in March and already recorded another record. I've really been enjoying working with him - I love the way his mind works. Anyway, I went over to his studio one day and I walked in and I sat down and he spat out a number at me. He was like, '107!' And I was like, 'what?' And he said, 'you need to go write a song at that tempo.' So, I busted out the metronome on my phone and started jamming to that tempo and we wrote the song right there in less than an hour - probably 30 minutes. You've been touring off and on for about 25 years now. What's your state of mind after a quarter of a century of life on the road?
I'm good with it. I'm grateful, actually, to still be able to do it. First of all, most people never get the chance - that's right off the bat. And then people who do get the chance never get the break; and then people who do get the break are lucky if they get a good five-year run. So, for me, I got the opportunity, I got the break - and now we're going on 25 years or more of being able to do what I love to do and support my family by doing it. That's a testament to our fans and the genre of music that we do. Without our fans and without the genre being as timeless as it is, I don't know if all that would be possible. So, I'm grateful. New Years Day's "Ash" Costello talks vocal range, NYD fans and more Last month we printed a brief rundown of the upcoming Halestorm & In This Moment show with goth metal heroes New Years Day providing support. As noted in the previous article, News 4U was fortunate enough to speak with NYD lead singer Ash Costello ahead of the tour date; in fact, our discussion took place just as she was preparing to begin work on a new album, the follow-up to 2015's Malevolence which featured

How difficult was it to pick the songs to cover for Diary of a Creep?
It took us a whole summer while we were touring out here [on the West Coast] on the Warped Tour to pick the songs and narrow them down from a very large list. I'm sure if someone asked you to pick your favorite five songs, it would take forever. And then I got told many times that I

Do you have an ETA?
I have a goal in mind and so does my management because we've
been working on this thing for so long and we've got to get it out. I would like to enjoy my Halloween time because it's my favorite time of year, so I'm hoping to have it done by October 1st. What accounts for the relatively long gaps between albums over the years?
The part that takes the longest is writing the songs, because I'm very particular, very picky and very hard on myself as an artist. Before Warped Tour 2017, we were in the studio for a month with a previous producer and we played an entire album for our record label, and we all decided to scrap the whole thing and start over. I never thought I would be one of those bands. But it felt really empowering, actually. I realized that I had a really strong vision of what I wanted and it didn't fit that. And my label supported me in that and my band supported me. The producer wasn't supportive, obviously, because that would mean he's not getting paid - that's the thing I don't love. I was dreading making that phone call because I didn't know how everybody was going to react. Speaking of reactions...there has been a lot of bitching on the
NYD Facebook page recently regarding the band's VIP package
offer. Some fans are upset that they have to pay to meet and speak with you whereas you've always been so friendly and approachable in the past.
I can explain it [the VIP offer] completely. I love meeting fans; I love going to the merch table. But I've become a liability. I'm not allowed to do that anymore. I've been told by every tour within the past year that I've been on that I'm no longer to go out to the merch table and sign anything for many, many reasons. For example, we played Webster Hall in New York and I just wanted to go out and do a signing and security had to get the owner before it became a fire hazard - too many people were crowding; people were shouting and pulling, blocking the exit. It's kind of unprecedented for an opening band to do VIP, but New Years Day is a special case because of our fans. To me, the VIP package is a good sign - it means that I'm getting bigger and that's what I hope all of the New Years Day fans would wish for me. But again, with a lot of the older fans, we still treat them special - we do give fans that have been around a long time free VIP or guestlist. All they have to do is ask us. York at that festival - I forget the name of it now. Anyway, he was there every year - he's from Colorado, I think - and he wrote this song and I'll tell you a little story about it. I actually went into the studio and recorded it unbeknownst to him and so, we played that festival up there in New York and he was there. My son Ronnie said that he was going to put the headphones on this guy and tell him to listen to it. And when it started, he hollered real loud, 'that's my song!' [laughs] He was tickled to death that we recorded it - it's a great story. Prior to Still Sings Bluegrass, you were approached by the daughter
of folk legend Woody Guthrie to write the music to newly-discovered Guthrie lyrics - which resulted in 2016's Del & Woody. It must have been an equally exciting and vaguely terrifying opportunity.
I have a lot of respect for Woody Guthrie as a songwriter. And I hoped I wouldn't mess him up. [laughs] But she [Nora Guthrie] said that she had faith in me. I tried to think what key he would have done each song in - but in the end I had to put them in the key that suited my voice and the tempos and stuff. And it was really a fun thing. I've written songs since I first started back in 1966. It's easy to get, say, a verse and a chorus but if you want the second verse...and the third one's almost impossible to come up with, you know. It's always been a job. So when I did this, I thought wait a minute, this is easy - the words are already on the page! [laughs] Guthrie wrote about everything - he wrote all the time, it seems, about whatever he saw, whatever he witnessed. He had a sense of humor and he also wrote about serious things. You seem quite content to play rhythm guitar on stage and function as
an accompanist, allowing the spotlight to shine on the rest of the band. There weren't too many lead acoustic guitar players when I was with [Bill] Monroe. But we played a place in California called Ashgrove and a guy named Doc Watson opened the show for us. I didn't know who he was and neither did Monroe. But he could play lead guitar along with Bill Monroe. It was just like they had done it all their lives because they both knew the parts to all the songs. So Doc and Bill would do that for the show - and Doc also had his own segment before the show. And he asked me if I would come on stage and play a little backup guitar or rhythm or whatever. I didn't know his songs, but he said they were just old fiddle tunes, and I knew those because I'd played with all those fiddle players and they'd made me learn all the chords. So I went out there and tried it. All the guys that had played with Bill - from Les Flatt all the way on up - had played rhythm and runs. So I kind of concentrated on that. And then when I quit Bill and started my own band, I had my hands full so I just played rhythm and runs. In my early bands, I had to play some pretty hard rhythm to keep them together. I knew that if I slacked up on that rhythm and started playing a lead part, this band's in trouble. [laughs] For tickets and more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org.

The tri-state is hardly wanting for places to shop during the holidays - we can all agree on that. Drive in any direction and you can find just about anything for anybody. Still, there's something about these crisp, colorful fall days that's just made for spending time in downtown Evansville. The walkway on Main Street, in particular,

Ease of parking is a must, you say? Well, in addition to plenty of spaces on the street, there are several parking garages within walking distance of everything, hassle-free with reasonable rates. What's not to like? Get to know downtown Evansville a little bit better with this guide and then visit the walkway and beyond this holiday season - you'll be glad you did.

INGREDIENTS •
1 pound mid or hot ground Italian sausage
•
1 tsp oil
•
3 garlic cloves, minced, but I used more since I couldn’t smell anything
•
36 oz of low sodium chicken broth. (I used 2 entire jars of homemade broth, but ALWAYS recommend LOW sodium)
•
1 Large cauliflower head diced into small pieces
•
3 cups chopped kale or spinach
•
¼ tsp crushed red pepper
•
1 tsp salt
•
½ black pepper
•
½ cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS •
Brown the ground sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat until done. (until the pink is cooked out)
•
Drain the sausage, leaving just enough oil to sauté the onions until they are translucent. This usually takes 3-4 minutes.
•
Add the sausage, onions, garlic, chicken (or vegetable stock if vegetarian), garlic, kale, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to the alloy cooker.

with Keló Kaddafi
Hip hop music has pretty much ruled the charts for the last two decades yet despite its enormous popularity, the genre has been woefully under-represented in the tri-state in terms of publicity and recognition. In reality, there are a number of very talented hip hop artists out there both creating and performing in the community. Keló Kaddafi - who pretty much stole the show at this year's fantastic ParksFest event in September - is one such talented artist (see profile on pg. 50). With his help, we intend to keep you up-to-date with everything hip-hop related, from upcoming shows to studio projects and more. This is The Rap Up...

It was at this point that the night took another interesting and unusual turn. As the birthday girl was laughing and hanging out in front of the stage near the singer, our young lady in the wheelchair - who by this time had downed a few beers with her medication - began to get a bit jealous of the attention being shown to our new fans. No joke, she actually began running her wheelchair into the girls while they were dancing - so they hopped up on stage with the band. This evidently infuriated our young

hero from the recent double ankle surgery. And to her credit, she would not be deterred. Exhibit B: Once again, she somehow managed to hoist herself up
and onto the stage - and to hurl a beer at one of the birthday girls. She even tried to punch at one of them, despite the fact that she was pretty much immobile with two casts on her ankles. Finally, security noticed what was going on, came over and lifted the girl off stage and put her back into her wheelchair. He then helped gather up her stuff and escorted her out of the building. And thus, our plucky young lady became the first woman in a wheelchair I have ever seen thrown out of a bar. Remember kids, be careful
when mixing medication from surgery with alcohol. - Aaron Crosby

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.wordpress.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport
DECODER RING (MONTHLY) Each month Slate writer Willa Paskin dives into a cultural mystery. Topics covered so far include the rapid evolution of art in hotel rooms; the Hollywood secret that one man used a fascinating machine to provide the laugh track for hundreds of television shows; how the writers of BBC’s Sherlock sent the fandom into a near-violent frenzy; and the cultural roots that led to that outbreak of scary clown sightings in 2016. Each episode is as detailed as it is entertaining and makes a wonderful addition to any non-fiction podcast playlist. slate. com
THE DREAM (BIWEEKLY) Hosted by journalist Jane Marie, The Dream is a nonfiction podcast that dives deep into the world of pyramid schemes and multi-level marketing to find out how they operate and what drives thousands of people to chase the dream of “easy” money. Marie talks about her town’s fascination with MLMs, why everyone seems to have at least one relative flogging MLM products on Facebook, and the wild characters that started this semi-legal business model. They even shell out the cash to have a member of the crew join a makeup MLM and get a sense of how a modern one operates. stitcher.com
THE EMPTY BOWL (BIWEEKLY) A podcast for people who like cereal, people who have anxiety, or people who are both at the same time. Podcasting celebrity Justin McElroy and cereal blogger Dan G. spend each episode discussing cereal and cereal-adjacent topics over a soundtrack of calming music. It’s chill, laugh-out-loud funny at times, and it makes me really want a bowl of cereal every time I listen. All proceeds raised by the podcast are split between Dan’s cereal blog operating costs and a food bank in Justin’s hometown. twitter.com/emptybowlshow
FLASH FORWARD (BIWEEKLY) Flash Forward is a wonderful hybrid of fact and fiction. Each episode, host Rose Eveleth poses a fantastical future, creates a small audio fiction set in this future as an introduction, then interviews real-life experts to talk about some of the implications of this future as well as current real-world versions of it. These futures can range from space-pirates dragging a second moon into orbit as a prank to a scarily possible future where everyone has an app that gives them a small amount of money every time they make a positive mention of certain brands/products. flashforwardpod.com

with Marisa Patwa BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY STARS UE GRAD The tri-state is getting a special treat this month on the big screen with UE graduate Rami Malek starring as Freddie Mercury in the highly anticipated Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. The film, which opens on November 2, has already been receiving major Oscar buzz, from the acting performances to the songs. For those of you out of the loop, Mercury was the lead singer of the trailblazing British band Queen known for a stream of hit songs, including "Another One Bites the Dust," “Somebody to Love,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,” and of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Malek, 37, attended college in Evansville, however, he was actually raised in Los Angeles by Egyptian immigrants and is a Notre Dame High School alumni. Fun fact: his classmates included Rachel Bilson and Kirsten Dunst. Since graduating from UE in 2003, Malek has slowly made a career for himself in Hollywood, securing roles on television shows like Gilmore Girls, Alcatraz, 24, BoJack Horseman, The War at Home, and The Pacific. But his career really took off when he won the role of Elliot Anderson on USA’s Mr. Robot, for which he earned an Emmy in 2016. Sacha Baron Cohen, otherwise known as “Borat,” was originally slated to play Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody back in 2010, but dropped out because he said the script focused too much on protecting Queen’s legacy and not enough time showcasing the wild and crazy hijinks they partook in, especially Mercury. But even with Malek being cast, the production didn’t go as smoothly as planned; Malek was often at odds with director Bryan Singer for either being late to set or not showing up at all. However, Singer ended up being fired, with Dexter Fletcher hired on to finish directing the film. In an interview Malek did with Empire, he said he and Singer also had “creative differences.” “All I ever wanted to do was honor Freddie and present some aspects of who he was,” Malek said. “I know I’m never going to be Freddie Mercury - that’s a losing game, right? But, in trying to get as close as you can to emulating someone, in doing the work, I felt I had a decent handle on who he was. It’s healthy to have your own opinions.” Regardless of the controversy, the film is predicted to make some big bucks at the box office. And it’s clear that with Bohemian Rhapsody, this is just the start of Malek’s long and successful film career.

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY
Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.
HANNAH: Hannah is a 12-year-old female Coonhound/Pointer mix! She loves to run and gets along fine with well-mannered dogs who aren’t too in-your-face. Thanks to the Grey Muzzle Organization, as a senior dog, her adoption fee is sponsored for senior citizens over the age of 70 through our Senior Pets program. And even for those who may not be 70+, her fee is only $110! Hannah’s a beautiful girl who is currently the longest canine resident at the VHS.
ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - SALEM Samantha Hoefling lives on Evansville's west side with her husband and four children - Landun, Paige, Liam and Alice (pictured) - along with two pets, including a 7-year-old Schnauzer and the family's latest addition, a one-yearold Lionhead rabbit called Salem. Adopted from the VHS last April, Salem (named after the cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch) had a rough go of it early in life, having been dumped off at Scales Lake in the winter and left to fend for himself. But thankfully he was rescued and taken to the Warrick Humane Society; however, Salem was passed over time and again and eventually transferred to the VHS. Lucky for him, the Hoeflings were in the market for a big ball of fur. "We fell in love with Salem because nobody wanted him," Samantha explains. "He's a special needs rabbit because his jaw was misaligned - which means that he has to go to the vet every month to get his teeth clipped. Nobody wanted to pay the vet bills." Not only do the Hoeflings not mind the extra expense, they spoil Salem rotten. He pretty much has the run of the house and even accompanies Samantha to pick up the kids at school each day. In addition, daughter Paige has her sights set on being a veterinarian, so she monitors Salem daily, ensuring that his every need is met. Another successful adoption!
NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH! SISSY: Sissy is an 8-year-old female tortoiseshell cat. She’s got beautiful vibrant coloring and is very friendly! She gets overlooked a lot because people consider her “old.” But we all know that cats can easily live to be 18-20+, so she’s still a spring chicken! Why not give her a home during Adopt a Senior Pet Month? Her $40 adoption fee includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more.
MYSTERY: Mystery is a female rabbit who is about a year old. She got her name because nobody knows what her ears are going to do next – usually one’s up and one’s down, but sometimes it changes! Q:
WHAT SHOULD WE BE FOCUSED ON THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?
November comes roaring in and ushers in the beginning of the holiday season for many faith groups. It’s interesting that many traditions have some recognition that the shadows are lengthening, remembrances of the dead are made, light is kindled, and thanks are rendered. It doesn’t really matter if you are a part of a faith tradition or not, the pattern plays itself out. All Hallow’s Eve, known as Halloween, is the night before “All Saints Day” in the Christian tradition – a time to remember those who have died and the contributions they made to life in this world. “The Day of the Dead” is another similar celebration. “Samhain” is a Celtic festival that celebrates the end of the harvest season and the decreasing sunlight. At such moments, in spite of our technological superiority, we are aware of our connection to the earth. We mark it with harvest festivals and commemorations and feasts. We are mindful that this earth is our source, our providing presence, and our ultimate destiny – “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” That should prompt in us new efforts to care for the earth. We have taken advantage of this planet for far too long. We have misused its resources and plundered its treasures. And we have been warned that we’re killing it off faster than was previously imagined. Take this month of November to be even more aware of how fragile this business of life really is and find some new ways to take care of this good and providing creation.

with Jonathan Gluff NPC Culture (Or “Alt-Right Is Not Might”) The rate at which people try to pass off internet memes as legitimate political discourse has been growing exponentially for quite some time. What ostensibly started off as unsourced opinions asserted as facts on the Facebook pages of the politically uninformed (or misinformed) has gradually evolved into full-scale narratives and slogans. The newest of these seems to be calling anyone who disagrees with Trump/the alt-right narrative “NPC’s” (short for “nonplayable character”), a term originating from video games used to describe characters the player can talk to and interact with but not control. The idea is to paint anyone disagreeing with their worldview as pawns echoing “mainstream media”/”leftist elites”/”globalist propaganda.” And just as many of the more benign memes originate from the dark, neckbearded recesses of the internet, this, too, has burrowed up from the darkest and neckbeardiest site of them all: 4Chan. For those fortunate enough to not be familiar with this digital cesspool, it’s a place where edgy teens and cringey, socially inept adults congregate to share questionable ideas and material (and occasionally something worth merit); this, however, very much falls into the former category. Over the last few years, 4Chan
NOVEMBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
has morphed into perhaps the largest breeding ground for what is known as the “alt-right.” And while it is entirely possible to espouse right-wing beliefs without being irrational, racist, or xenophobic, the alt-right often chooses to go ahead and be those things anyway. While I’m far from what the ‘Channers would call an “SJW” (or “social justice warrior,” a term often used to describe seemingly anyone leaning further left than Bill O’Reilly), this meme really is kind of worrisome. For one, the irony that they are blindly repeating the charge that others can’t think for themselves seems to be lost on them. If NPC’s follow a script and you continue to rely on a single catchphrase as an argument, wouldn’t that logic make you an NPC as well? Furthermore, dehumanizing political opponents is a slippery slope, especially on a site already frequented by many school shooters. The last thing a would-be attacker needs is to be encouraged that their targets have no autonomy or value to society. The anonymity granted by the internet already has enough of a dehumanizing effect. We need to remember that we’re all NPC’s in literally everyone else’s game. Whether you choose to be friend or foe is up to you.

TRI-STATE
POLITICS with Bryan Fox
COULD WINNECKE HAVE A LEGIT CHALLENGER WITHIN HIS OWN PARTY? Trump came. Trump conquered. The mayor was absent. On the day President Trump came to Evansville to rock the Ford Center, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke was MIA. If there was ever a time for a politician to be in the city, especially as a Republican, that was it. The mayor looked to have a legitimate excuse, saying he was already attending a previously scheduled economic development project outside the area. However, it still fits into the narrative that he's an establishment candidate. Maybe even a Never-Trumper. Winnecke is on track to become the first GOP mayor in Evansville history to win three terms in office. It appears to be a foregone conclusion unless a Democratic candidate comes out of nowhere. But could Winnecke possibly have a legit challenger within his own party? There's no question that Vanderburgh County GOP chair Wayne Parke has divided the party. Time and again Parke has endorsed candidates pre-primary only to see those candidates lose. This has created division within the ranks with the GOP chair and elected officials he didn't support. County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave was one such candidate, even calling Parke a "bully."
With Parke's division and Winnecke's establishment factor, it's not completely out of the question for there to be a decent challenge to Winnecke in the primary. Dan Mcguinn would be one such candidate. Mcguinn is an Independent, a formerly Republican First Ward City Councilman. He resigned from the Republican Party due to criticism from Parke over gerrymandering and tax increases. Fifth Ward Councilman Justin Elpers would be another one. Elpers, a young man with a family, has supported traditional values since becoming a councilman and also abides by what the state/U.S. Constitution says about public law in the form of former 8th District Congressman John Hostettler. J.D. Strouth could be a dark horse. While never serving in public office, Strouth has run for several offices before, including against long-time state rep Dennis Avery. Most recently, he ran against City Clerk Laura Windhorst, losing by just over 200 votes in a city-wide election. Strouth is well-known in GOP circles and might get some backing. Perhaps the Democrats' only chance to get rid of Winnecke is through another GOP candidate unseating him.

Post-er Children Not sure exactly when it happened...but somehow you've gotten this crazy idea that everyone needs to know about every little detail of your daily existence. What you ate for breakfast. What sort of workday you had. What you're having for dinner. What movie you might see tonight. What you dreamt about. Trust me, you're not that interesting. Nobody is. And yet, there you are, blabbering on online day in and day out, week after week. It's exhausting. Seriously, perhaps you could dial back the FB posts and try using your "inside voice" for awhile. I mean, reading about how you bit into a grape and it contained seeds was fascinating, don't get me wrong. Or how about that time you took the trash out and - wait for it - the bag had a hole and garbage fell out onto the pavement! All good stuff. In fact, I almost feel guilty asking you to take a breather. Who knows what we all might miss out on - maybe you'll buy some bananas that go bad in just two days or something. All right, then, keep on keeping us up to date with the latest and the greatest from your glamorous life (shout-out to Sheila E.) and we'll keep lapping it up. HOLD THE DARK NETFLIX/ADDICTIVE PICTURES
It is nearly impossible to write about Hold the Dark without spoiling some aspect of the film. The plot unfolds like a thick fog over a battlefield where glints of light show its depth but reveal little else. Children are going missing in a small town in Alaska, and Medora Sloane (Riley Keogh), the mother of the town's latest casualty, calls on an expert to help find the perpetrator. The man, Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright), is a writer and naturalist, who from the outset of the film flips expectation. “You're old,” Sloane says upon meeting Core. Not soon after, expectations are flipped once again, and the film turns from a murder mystery into something all together different. Sloane's husband, Vernon (Alexander Skarsgard), is as reticent as his wife, and is introduced to the viewer as a nihilistic soldier, seemingly hardened as a psychological casualty of war, but again we understand as the story unfolds that this expectation is largely untrue. The entire film is hinged on the topic of displacement. Alaskan natives are being forced from their homes by a slow push to conform to the modern communities developing around them. But the film doesn't work to challenge our ideology around racism and equality, it pushes us instead to question our grasp on reality and the relationship we have with myth and tradition. - John Thurgood
MALEVOLENT NETFLIX
Malevolent tackles the tried and true - and somewhat tired storyline of the con-artist clairvoyant. The Conjuring comes to mind as a good comparison, because Malevolent steals a good portion of its arc from its start to about halfway through the movie. The comparison breaks down not on its own merit but because the hook on which the movie is hinged follows the kind of “teen fright night” films that have flooded the horror genre for the past 50 years, which makes sense since Malevolent is a part of Neflix's new October offering Netflix and Chill. Instead, the plot falls apart in a twist that seems somewhat obvious and a little ham-fisted, and loses the slow build and the small amount of tension that was developed through the supernatural aspects of the brother/sister duo Angela and Jackson, who naively lead their group of con-artists to their metaphorical end. Though there is not much to be said about the storyline of Malevolent, the filmmaking and acting aren't without their charm. The location is beautiful. The house they are divining is extravagantly eerie. And the cast manages to fulfill the role of bratty, troubled teens without pushing their characters into the realm of caricature. If nothing else, Malevolent manages to adhere to a familiar structure where its suspense outweighs its character's internal struggle with existentialism, which has bogged down so many films of its ilk. - John Thurgood

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2018 | MUSIC REVIEWS
PAUL MCCARTNEY Egypt Station Capitol Records It’s difficult to review a solo album from a giant on the shoulders of which the majority of pop music today stands on. On the one hand it’s unfair to compare Paul McCartney’s 2018 music to anything The Beatles did; on the other hand, I’ve only heard three not-Beatles songs of his, so I’m more likely to pull from that as a reference point. In the end I didn’t have that problem because Egypt Station really is just a rich old man noodling around for the fun of it. It’s a playlist-padder of an album. Nothing particularly bad, and a couple of toe-tappers that’ll stick in your head over a few years. The songs don’t really say or do much, preferring to run cloyingly sweet with occasional sparks of that McCartney/Lennon era level of creativity. There’s also the one song about certain massively unpopular politicians that tries to both be critical and keep it vague in that coy 1960's way, but with today’s level of political discourse in music it feels like McCartney playing things aggressively safe. If you want a good stretch of songs that nobody in the car will particularly hate, Egypt Station has got you covered. - Gavin Gaddis
PALE WAVES My Mind Makes Noises Dirty Hit
PAUL SIMON In the Blue Light Legacy Recordings As someone whose experience with Paul Simon as a solo artist equates to “wow "You Can Call Me Al" sure does pop up on 80s playlists a lot” this album was a slap to the face. I’ve been sleeping on Paul Simon and it’s time to change that. In the Blue Light is Simon’s final solo album and is built entirely of lesser-known songs from throughout his career that have been tweaked and re-recorded. This is to say, Blue Light is nothing but creative songs that are damn good but in that creativity doomed themselves to never be hit singles. What’s truly shocking about this album is that although the 10 songs span nine albums and 39 years, my complete lack of Simon knowledge meant I spent a week listening to it without realizing they weren’t all written to be on this album. If anything it feels like these songs have been in an old, worn notebook that he finally decided to finalize into songs. If you want a slow pop album that rewards your paying attention, In the Blue Light is the best technically modern example I can point to. - Gavin Gaddis
RICK AND MORTY The Rick and Morty Soundtrack Sub Pop/Adult Swim
Wow. I’m not going to lie to you, I picked this album from a list almost at random. I saw “English” and “pop” and decided it might be worth a try. My Mind Makes Noises is the debut album of Pale Waves and I am immediately a fan. The closest parallel I can draw is Taylor Swift but with a hefty extra scoop of emotion and 80's synth/guitar sound added to the mix. If turned down so one can only vaguely hear, each track genuinely sounds like an 80's pop song one can’t quite remember.
For all of the goofy memes and songs the show created, what really elevated Rick and Morty as a show was talented writers and good use of licensed music. Given the show’s history of good music and Adult Swim regularly associating the IP with popular artists (including producing an R&M music video for Run the Jewels) this soundtrack was primed to be a wonderful mix of indie pop, hip-hop, and a handful of goofy songs that have been memed to death ten times over.
Turned up, however, Pale Waves blows the doors off the usual “it sure sucks we broke up” platitudes Top 40 has force-fed the music scene for years. My Mind isn’t afraid to go dark, passionate, at times brutally honest. It’s not perfect; most reviews I’ve read knock points off for Pale Waves’ lack of original feel and, yeah, from their album art to their sound there’s a lot of imitation. From Taylor Swift to Siouxsie Sioux, there are similarities that could do with refining, but overall it’s a hell of a promising first album. - Gavin Gaddis
Unfortunately this album is mostly the latter. Of the 21 songs, only three are not by R&M voice actors/the in-house composer (and of the three one uses R&M samples and one is a Chaos Chaos song that isn’t "Terryfold" or "Do You Feel It"). It’s mainly Justin Roiland singing intentionally stupid songs that break any sense of mood from the licensed music and show composer Ryan Elder’s amazing original pieces. One could almost sue Adult Swim from the whiplash that occurs going from the powerful electronica of "Unity Says Goodbye" to friggin’ "Get Schwifty." This isn’t an album, it’s a garbage playlist Adult Swim published because they know fans will buy it. The fact that natural resources are being used to print physical copies of this saddens me deeply. - Gavin Gaddis

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2018 | MUSIC REVIEWS
HOZIER Nina Cried Power Columbia Records Andrew Hozier-Byrne returns nearly four years after Live in America. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Irish musician best known for the exhilarating "Take Me to Church" explained that he simply can't write a true album on tour. He nearly ran to the studio to produce this fourtrack EP inspired by today’s struggles before preparing for his European Tour. "Nina Cried Power,” the EP's title track, is a song inspired by protest songs, mainly those of the late Nina Simone. A commentary on the ongoing struggles for equality, lyrics like “It’s not the waking/It’s the rising” are strong enough to show that the battles fought for equality are far from over. Beyond the call to action of “Nina Cried Power,” Hozier’s voice resonates just as powerfully throughout the EP as it did on “Take Me to Church.” Between the blues-like drawl of Hozier’s vocals and the slow, swaying acoustic guitar, these four songs leave you in an almost trance-like state. Sure to take off like Hozier’s previous releases, this EP reflects the times yet sounds timeless. - Kendall Shanks
THE MOUNTAIN GOATS The Hex of Infinite Binding Merge Records Nearly 30 years on, The Mountain Goats are a band that has stayed true to its style, while still bringing something new to the table. Another four song EP of the season, The Hex of Infinite Binding has a nostalgic feeling, mirroring the cadence and rhythm of mid-sixties folk rock. Accompanied by a string arrangement and folksy vocals, The Hex could easily be played alongside classic songs like “Time of the Season" by The Zombies or Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” “Hospital Reaction Shot,” the third song on the EP, aims to encapsulate the press conference with Mickey Dean, shortly after the death of Judy Garland, according to Goats' frontman John Darnielle. Via Bandcamp, he has stated that balance of life and death are the thematic impetus of the EP, in that everyone that has died can still be “found in the vortex shortly before sundown.” Even with its existential message, The Hex is the perfect sonic vehicle to transition from the warm summer months to the chilling air of fall. Take in the sights of falling leaves and the crackle of a bonfire while listening to this sobering release. - Kendall Shanks
BLUES with BRAGIN LURRIE BELL & THE BELL DYNASTY Tribute to Carey Bell Delmark Records Lurrie Bell & The Bell Dynasty have teamed up to release an homage to their late patriarch, Carey Bell. Opening track “Gone to Main Street” features excellent harmonica playing from Steve Bell, as well as a solid bass line from Tyson Bell and guitar solo from Lurrie Bell. “I Got to Go” features a guest appearance by harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. In addition to playing drums throughout the album, James Bell first steps up to sing on “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” a ballad about a man warning his girlfriend that she can be replaced if she misbehaves. Harmonica player Billy Branch adds vocals to “So Hard to Leave You.” The song also features the first appearance from Sumito “Ariyo” Ariyoshi on piano. Branch returns on “Carey Bell Was a Friend of Mine,” which starts with a great bass line and contains superb harmonica playing throughout. Lyrically, it touches on the joy of knowing the late Carey Bell and his virtuosity on the harmonica. The album concludes with the self-explanatory “When I Get Drunk,” featuring the return of Ariyoshi on piano. For more info, visit delmarkrecords.com. - Paul Bragin
MARK WENNER'S BLUES WARRIORS Self-Titled Ellersoul Records After releasing noteworthy albums with his band The Nighthawks, bluesman Mark Wenner returns with the Blues Warriors and their self-titled debut. A cover of Muddy Waters’ “Diamonds at Your Feet” kicks things off, featuring great solos from Clarence Turner on guitar and Wenner on harmonica. “Rock a While” maintains a steady bass line by Steve Wolf that provides a good foundation for Wenner’s harmonica. Wenner starts off “Checkin’ Up on My Baby” with good harmonica playing, as well as a great solo in the middle that inspires other harmonica players. The guitar adds a nice touch that gives the whole song a great 1950's sock hop feeling. The guitar in “It’s My Own Fault” sounds reminiscent of the Texas blues popularized by Stevie Ray Vaughan with its slow, drawn out notes. The vocals on “Trust My Baby” complement the melancholy guitar and harmonica very nicely. Mark Stutso’s drumming on “The Hucklebuck” provides a great backdrop for this instrumental track. Wolf’s bass in the middle of the song sounds like something out of a jazz club from decades ago. “Just Like Jimmy” is a Wenner original tune that pays tribute to Jimmy Reed, one of his heroes. Much like the Fountain of Juice also being reviewed this month, this IPA is definitely on the less hoppy side, albeit slightly moreso than that brew. The inclusion of the citra hops lends a lightness and notes of subdued fruitiness, which nicely accompanies the hint of woodiness while adding fullness to the flavor. None of the slight metallic aftertaste of other IPAs is present, either; if I wanted to lick the inside of a metal vat, I’d drink a Newcastle. This is an excellent choice for those who find most India pale ales too strong.
A thick white head forms on this India pale ale and remains for a long time. The nose contains a generous amount of hops with citrus and floral notes. The hops continue with the first sip of the beer, with a significant amount of hop bitterness staying in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs need to try this. Pair it with aged Cheddar cheese, herb roasted poultry dishes or salads with vinaigrette dressing.
This beer pours a clear amber color. I like that it has an ABV of 7.9% so you get a little bang for your buck. I can taste a little tangerine flavor and other citrus flavors. I like that it doesn't coat your tongue with hops like other IPAs do, plus it has a very crisp finish and it's somewhat easy to drink.

Oatmeal stouts have a unique ability to blend the richness of stouts with an overall lighterthan-traditional feel. The pour of the Poet brings the stout hallmark of a thick head. There’s certainly a complexity behind the velvety smoothness, with nutty undertones and a slight roastiness. But while the flavor may be robust, there isn’t much that separates it from the pack. Nonetheless, it’s a quality early take on the everexpanding market for oatmeal stouts. Whether you enjoy the robust flavor of stouts or dislike the “meal-within-a-pint” heaviness of Guinness and others, pick up a sixer of this.
A thick tan head tops this dark stout after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass. The scent maintains a nice balance of roasted malt notes, coffee and sweet malt. The roasted malt and coffee flavors persist when drinking the beer, with the coffee flavors staying during the long finish. People who like porters and stouts should drink this. Pair it with mushrooms, beef, soft-ripened cheeses and chocolate. It could also work well in cooking.
I was actually excited when I poured this beer. It's a nice dark-colored beer with a rich head. I enjoy the rich coffee flavor, but it kind of falls off from there. It has a light chocolate flavor but what disappoints me is the finish. I can't put my finger on the flavor, but the finish isn't good.
NOVEMBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
This is an excellent beer, but misleading in name in a few very benign ways: First, despite it being a Double IPA, it’s definitely on the mild side. Given many microbreweries’ penchant for hop blitzkriegs, this is a plus in my book. The mildness is due to the second misnomer: For a beer with “Juice” in the name, it’s not sweet or syrupy. Again, that’s definitely a pro, not a con, as the very light fruit taste balances out the slight hoppiness. Even if you’re a “Never IPA”-er, this is definitely one worth trying.
A substantial white head crowns this hazy, straw-colored Imperial India pale ale. The scent packs a heavy punch of citrus from the wide variety of hops used during brewing. The citrus remains when tasting the beer, with bitter notes from the hops also coming in during the finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to try this limited release while they can. Pair it with brisket, chicken-fried steak, American blue cheese or crème brulee.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a golden, hazy beer with an 8% ABV that comes in a pint can. It's pretty heavy on the fruit flavors which makes it a good tailgating beer - very tasty while you're hanging out before the game and pretty easy to drink.
NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2018 | BEER REVIEWS
METAZOA HOPPOPOTAMUS but were punctuated with a pronounced metallic finish. Pouring into a glass curtailed this, allowing the citrus to shine through on the palate. The high IBUs (International Bitterness Units) definitely steal the show here, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing so long as you know what you’re getting into. This is definitely a beer for the hop-initiated, but if lighter-flavored fare is more your speed, you may want to pass on this one.
JONATHAN GLUFF - 3
Some brews do not seem suited to a can, and this is very much one of them. My initial sips brought a very hoppy flavor,
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75
A thick white head rests on this wheat beer. A burst of citrus and a hint of pine from the hops fills the nose. The initial tasting of the beer seems more balanced due to the
wheat, with the hop presence returning more forcefully in the finish. People who enjoy wheat beers or hoppy beers should drink this. Pair it with lighter dishes like salads, cheeses like fontina and Camembert or poultry.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5
The only thing going for this beer is that it has an ABV of 7%. It has the average citrus flavor which is standard in all IPAs, but the fruity flavors vs. the bitterness of the hops isn't working for me. I think they were trying too hard to cover several markets with this beer and it just kind of flopped.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2018 | BOURBON REVIEWS
DISTILLING IT DOWN with Dusty Barn Distillery
Last month, my wife and brother-in-law accompanied me in a blind taste test pitting the rye whiskey of our very own local spirits slinger, Dusty Barn Distillery, against others at multiple price points both higher and lower. (I have come to lovingly refer to this round as “Rye for a Rye.”) For Round 2: Bourbon Boogaloo, we changed our subject (bourbon) and expanded our testing group (our friends Matt and Jana joined Kristen, Sam, and I, while one of Dusty Barn’s other distillers, Alex, joined Jesse) to see if Doc & Co. could once again manage a near-unanimous victory. Let the experiment begin! (commentary by Jonathan Gluff)
ROUND 1 - WILD TURKEY: Notes on this were consistent, with all but one mentioning its
sweetness. I personally focused on its rather unpleasant burn, but that it did become smoother on ice. Others were earthiness, oiliness, vanilla, and licorice. Interestingly, overall placement was mixed, with four of us placing it in the bottom two and the other three in the top two.
ROUND 2 - DOC’S BOURBON: I immediately noticed a much cleaner smell on this one, but also earthy/woody undertones that others also picked up on. Sam and Jesse both picked up on a touch of corn to the flavor, while Jana and I both agreed with Jesse that there was a smokiness to the flavor similar to that of a Scotch. I personally consider that a plus. (Once again, even though we did not know which bourbon was which, I correctly guessed that this was their product.)
ROUND 3 - OLD FORESTER: Ice or water can normally tame a strong whiskey, or at least blunt the burn. Such was not the case with this bourbon - whether ice cold or room temperature, it was rough going down. It lacked the robustness of the previous drinks, and had an odd, almost artificial cherry taste on the finish. One taster unfavorably (but not unfairly) compared it to Robitussin. Unsurprisingly, it finished dead last in overall scores by a wide margin, with only one of us ranking it above fourth.
ROUND 4 - DAVID NICHOLSON 1843: This offering had a very light nose and aftertaste, with all reviewers commenting on its smoothness. There was a subtle leatheriness to it, which is something I’m more accustomed to experiencing in a cigar, not a bourbon; nonetheless, I found it just as pleasant here as on a stogie.
ROUND 5 - BASIL HAYDEN’S: This one was nearly as divisive as the first in terms of score, but one thing we all agreed on was the smoothness; both Sam and I weren’t sure whether this or the second one was smoother. Matt and I detected a touch of oakiness, while Jesse and I agreed that although it was fairly balanced, it lacked any defining characteristic.
We each ranked them in order of favorite to least. The results were:
R1 Overall: 4th | R2 Overall: 1st | R3 Overall: 5th | R4 Overall: 3rd | R5 Overall: 2nd Once more, Doc’s libation won by a wide margin. Join us next month for some sweeter swill as Doc’s liqueurs take on all challengers! The Dusty Barn Distillery is located at 6861 Carson School Rd. in Mount Vernon.
