NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | EDITOR'S CORNER

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

J

ust for kicks, I was going to start this month's note off with a wicked April Fools' Day joke about News4U; however, considering today's world of "fake news" and social media over-sharing, I thought better of it (translation: I'd like to keep my job). But believe me, it would have been hilarious. Seriously funny. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. Anyhow, moving on... April is here and that means the return of Guns & Hoses, the tri-state's most exciting event. Since 2008, the annual epic boxing match between local police officers and firefighters has packed the Ford Center and raised thousands and thousands of dollars for community charities that involve children and people with disabilities. Check out pg. 6 for the lowdown on the 2017 edition and be sure to get your ticket for the April 22 showdown! Mind you, while the Guns and the Hoses battle fiercely inside the ring every

year, as noted, the departments are united in working towards a common goal; together they make a real Power Duo. And that's what this issue of News4U is all about. By way of online nominations and recommendations, we've assembled 10 of the most influential and well-respected local couples, business/musical partners and siblings - even departments. Separately, everyone featured has done amazing things, no question. But no one person can generate the power of a like-minded, motivated, driven duo. See all of our nominees beginning on pg. 14. Finally, don't miss out on the big concerts coming to downtown Evansville this month, including country star Lee Brice at the Ford Center and hard rockers Tesla at the Victory. Details inside! - TE

FORD CENTER | APRIL 22 | 7 P.M.

A decade of charity: Annual showdown between the blue and the red reaches major milestone

I

t's been a wild ride, all right. Indeed, 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of one of the most popular - and bruising - events the tri-state has ever seen. The annual Guns & Hoses charity boxing match between the local police and fire departments always packs the Ford Center with thousands of screaming fans, raising thousands of dollars for various charities in the process - especially for the effort to help those afflicted with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) like EPD Detective Patrick Phernetton's daughter, Mykenna. "Mickey" was the initial inspiration for the event and continues to be a big part of the reason why so many people want to get involved every year.

Center. The annual battle between the local police and fire departments makes for an intense evening of boxing - 15 epic matches to determine which side claims the belt and gets bragging rights for the next year. 2016 saw the Guns walk away with a big victory, but the Hoses are looking to turn the tide on April 22nd.

911 Gives Hope is the driving force behind Guns & Hoses, having raised over $750,000 for local charities that support children and people with disabilities. Made up of police officers, firefighters and paramedics, the non-profit organization continues working toward its goal of building a group home for persons suffering from PWS. The disease, which creates a feeling of constant hunger, affects approximately one in 15,000; if left unattended, people like Mykenna can literally eat themselves to death. That's what makes the community's support of Guns & Hoses so important - the money from the event impacts lives in a very significant way.

A confinement officer with the Vanderburgh Co. Sheriff's Office, Wallace is making her third appearance at Guns & Hoses, having split her first two bouts. But coming off last year's decisive second round TKO, she's primed and ready to do battle again - and more confident. "The crowd was overwhelming the first year, and I didn't expect it to be so hot inside the ring," she says. "But I trained longer and harder last year - not just boxing but doing cross-fit, too. My victory seemed to give the rest of the team motivation. Now I'm training even harder for this year's event, at least six days/week." Reportedly not much of a trash-talker, Wallace notes that McKinney, a paramedic at Yellow Ambulance of Owensboro Daviess Co., has stated that she's "coming for her." "I told her I'd be there," she laughs.

Of course, it's the action inside the ring that brings everyone together at the Ford

Two veteran G & H fighters sure to come out swinging are Shelly Wallace and Russ Word. But they'll each have their hands full inside the ropes. Here's the tale of the tape:

SHELLY WALLACE (GUNS) VS. HALEY MCKINNEY (HOSES)

RUSS WORD (HOSES) VS. SGT. SAM SMITH (GUNS)

Word, a firefighter with the Evansville Fire Department since 2008, is back for his sixth battle at the Ford Center. He boasts a 3-2 record to date but will definitely have all he can handle against fellow G & H veteran, EPD Sgt. Sam Smith. "He's a pretty big guy. I'm about 240 and he's 255," Word says. "They had him going up against a smaller guy from our side, so I said I'd fight him." Now it's just a matter of getting into shape before the bell sounds on April 22nd. "I just started training - but the more I train, the more confident I'll become," he says. "I never take anybody lightly." Amusingly, Word notes that while he's always a little sore following a fight, his hangover is usually more a result of "too many beers" at the post-match G & H celebration. Party on, Russ! Which is a good reminder that Guns & Hoses is all about community and the camaraderie between the departments. The fights are all in good fun and all in the name of charity. Come out and support this great cause and help get the Ford Center rocking on April 22nd! For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com or 911giveshope.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

LEE BRICE & JUSTIN MOORE

"AMERICAN MADE" TOUR Two of country music's biggest stars teaming up for co-headlining run of shows

I

f you're a fan of contemporary country music, it doesn't get any better than this. Featuring good buddies Lee Brice and Justin Moore, the "American Made" tour is a dream pairing of dynamic performers, each having scored multiple number one singles and top tens - not to mention a haul of ACM, CMA and Grammy awards. Expect a virtual hit parade of signature songs: "Love Like Crazy," "A Woman Like You," "Hard 2 Love," "I Don't Dance," "Drinking Class," "Small Town USA," "Backwoods," "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away," "Til My Last Day," "Lettin' the Night Roll," "You Look Like I Need a Drink" and more. Lee Brice kindly spoke with News4U about the tour, his upcoming album and more. Who came up with the great idea of pairing you and Justin together? Would you like to

8|

take credit? I mean, I can and I will - let's just say it was my idea (laughs). You know, I've actually done a few other co-headlining tours. My first one was with Jerrod Niemann and then last year I did a co-headlining tour with Chris Young. It's just really cool when you get out and headline a tour with a good buddy - someone you've got something in common with. When Justin and I started talking about it, it just seemed like a good fit. We're both kind of cut from the same cloth but different enough to where we're not going to bring along all the same fans. We've had a great time so far on this tour. You're about due for another album - and you set the bar very high with 2014's I Don't Dance. I'm almost done with the new album, and we'll be coming out with a single at the very end of May or the first week of June. The bar was high for sure, and I knew that going in, but I think we've reached it. In my mind, this will be the best record we've made by far. It's going to feel like what it is - the same band playing the same instruments for every song. It's going to feel a lot more "live" and a lot more raw and real. I had vocal surgery in October, and I started this record a year before that. My voice was headed down a really rough path, but that lent itself to me writing some really soulful stuff, because I had this ratty, tired voice. And that's what I'm really excited about - the soulful feel. And there are a few monsters on this album - the first single is called "Boy," and it's kind of the "I Drive Your Truck" of this album.

Have you considered making a strippeddown acoustic album - just you and a guitar? I'd love to make a record that's just me and an acoustic guitar. That's how I grew up playing, and I was a big fan of Garth Brooks when he would hang his feet off the end of the stage and just play his guitar. I still think there's so much value in those songs where you don't have to have a big production around them. My new album will even showcase a little bit of that. Was there a big learning curve for you when you arrived in Nashville in terms of understanding the music business? I was pretty lucky to be in the hands of Doug Johnson when I first came to town. He had done everything from running record labels to working with Blake Shelton when he started out. He also produced all kinds of stuff that I grew up listening to - John Michael Montgomery to Doug Stone. And he wrote "Three Wooden Crosses" and a ton of other stuff. Basically, he knew the business inside and out. Spending that first summer [in Nashville] with him every day writing songs... I think I was very well prepared - he was preparing me to work, to learn the business, because so many people can be thrown into it and not realize what's going on. It definitely is work and a sacrifice for a lot of reasons. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com.

BUD'S HARLEY-DAVIDSON

THURSDAY NIGHT THUNDER FRANKLIN STREET 2017 | MAY 11 - SEPTEMBER 21

Hog wild: West side weekly motorcycle gathering returning for another summer of fun

L

ast year's inaugural "Thursday Night Thunder" ("TNT") series got Franklin Street all revved up throughout the summer months, attracting thousands of bikers and onlookers to the west side of Evansville for a weekly party that included all the essentials for a good time: great food, cheap beer and live music. Supported by the Franklin Street Events Association and sponsored by Bud's Harley-Davidson, "TNT" was a rousing success with area businesses benefitting from the overflow of people. Reportedly, riders came in from as far away as St. Louis and Nashville, booking hotel rooms and spending several days at a time right here in Evansville - a great boost to the city's economy. Now it's time to do it all again. Beginning May 11, "TNT" returns with reserved bike parking along the 2100 block of west Franklin Street from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Cruise in on your Harley and hang out with bikers from all over the tri-state and beyond. And of course, there will be no shortage of food and drinks. Restaurants offering specials include Lamasco Bar & Grill, Gerst Haus, Smitty's Italian, Piston's Bar & Grill, Franklin Street Tavern, Sportsman's Billiards & Grille, The Corner Bar and Leroy's Tavern. In addition, you can enjoy live music at Piston's and enter for weekly door prizes from Bud's Harley-Davidson, News4U and other area sponsors. Best of all, "TNT" will once again hold Charity Event Nights (TBA) to benefit local organizations. Last year, money raised helped out It Takes A Village K-9 Rescue, Stop Light City Playground, American Cancer Relay for Life, Riley Children's Hospital and Mad Max Ride for the Kids at Riley.

For more info, visit Thursday Night Thunder on Facebook.

NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | UPCOMING EVENTS

TESLA VICTORY THEATRE | APRIL 30 | 7:30 P.M.

Drummer Troy Luccketta on keeping things clean, album anniversaries and recording with Phil Collen

T

hey've been called everything in the book - hair metal, heavy metal, blues-rock, hard rock, classic rock and so on. But the simple fact is that Tesla defies categorization; or rather, there's no need for it. As drummer Troy Luccketta likes to say, "It's just music." Formed in the early 80s, the Sacramento, CA band came to prominence alongside fellow rockers Def Leppard and Poison but somehow always seemed to occupy their own space, always seemed a little more real. And fans responded, sending such early tracks as "Love Song," "Modern Day Cowboy," "What You Give" and their ubiquitous "Signs" cover screaming up the charts. Following a hiatus in the late 90s, Tesla reformed, eventually releasing 2004's scorching Into the Now, proving that they hadn't lost a musical step. Forever More and Simplicity appeared in 2008 and 2014, respectively, while the band's live show has remained a hot ticket. The guys will head out in early April for a much-anticipated package tour with old friends Def Leppard and Poison, making periodic headlining appearances at theaters along the way.

12 |

Tesla was fairly unique at the beginning, as each album seemed to have a concept of sorts and there wasn't a scantily-clad woman to be found on any album cover or in your videos - a staple of hair metal. Was that a conscious decision from the beginning? It started from the first record - you know, carrying Nikola Tesla's name gave us a lot of things to reflect on for sure, including imagery, his story. Like [1989's] The Great Radio Controversy - that's the US Supreme Court's ruling, that was the name of the ruling that dealt with the patents for radio. A lot of people aren't going to get the history of that when they hear it, but it is what it is (laughs). But to answer your question, it was a conscious decision not to have any women on our album covers or in our videos - we never sold sex, never went that route. We've always kept it clean, never watered down our music or message that way. The band released Mechanical Resonance Live in 2016 to celebrate the debut album's 30th anniversary. Will you do the same for The Great Radio Controversy? I really don't know. The thing about it is, we've not gone out and played the whole [debut ] album the way that it was recorded. The last two weeks of the [previous] Def Leppard tour we opened our show with a couple of tracks from Mechanical Resonance - we changed them out every night. I mean, we only had a couple performances of each song. But we managed to get a recording of the whole album live and decided to put it out. It would still

April 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

be a good idea to go out and just celebrate the whole record, because there are fans out there that want to hear it, you know? Maybe we could do a few one-offs of those first two records. That would be very cool. You're currently working on a follow-up to Simplicity with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen acting as producer. Can you give us an update? I am really excited about it. It's going to be very, very cool. Over the years, Phil has learned a lot from [Def Leppard producer] Mutt Lange. He's like a little junior Mutt (laughs). And we've been able to strike a balance between what we do and what he does. But he knows that everything has got to have a hook - there are going to be hooks all over this thing; that's how it's being constructed. We don't have a release date for the album just yet, but we're hoping this year yet - or the first quarter of 2018. We'll see how things flesh out. Will fans be in for a career-spanning set when you headline the Victory? Oh, yeah - we'll play the hits and we'll throw a few B-sides in there. And we'll definitely play "Save That Goodness" which is a new track. We won't play anything off the new record just yet, but the timeline of the show is really nice and we've got some video production, some nice lighting - and the band is looking and sounding really good. I think that the fans will be really pleased with the show. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com.

First up in April is Patriotic Pops, an afternoon of traditional patriotic favorites led by Carl Topilow, the charismatic conductor of the renowned Cleveland Pops. The combination of his colorful personality and brightly-colored array of clarinets has endeared him to audiences across the country. In addition to Topilow's highly-anticipated appearance, the performance will feature the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus. New Evansville boutique spa specializes in providing personalized, natural experience "The atmosphere is so calming, quaint, and cozy," reads a recent online review of Bella Terra Organic Spa & Shoppe - and that's just the sort of response that owner Japhia Burrell was hoping to elicit from clients when she recently opened the business on Evansville's east side. A registered nurse who has worked in oncology, cardiac stepdown, labor and delivery and lactation, she eventually found her true calling as a massage therapist, driven by a desire to provide holistic care. Burrell now splits her time between her private practice and her position as a massage therapy instructor at Ivy Tech. What really sets Bella Terra apart from other boutique spas is its mission to provide an unparalleled, personalized experience with an emphasis on using products that are safe, all natural and organic. In fact, the name of the spa translates as "beautiful earth" - a nod to Burrell's commitment to create an environmentallyfriendly place for clients to feel good about, a place where concern is shown for how we treat our planet. NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

"Unplugged Ale House provides not only nightlife and live music, but also gastropub cuisine."

UNPLUGGED ALE HOUSE 329 MAIN ST. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-401-0175

A

ll is alive and well at 329 Main Street. Unplugged Ale House, one of downtown's newer establishments, provides not only nightlife and live music, but also gastropub cuisine. Besides being a seasoned musician, manager Matt Camp also knows his way around the kitchen. Between Camp and cochef Cory Stateler, Unplugged is pumping out carefully-crafted dishes in a speakeasy environment not often found in our neck of the woods. During my visit, Camp was more than enthusiastic about sharing the menu. The first dish sampled, an appetizer of Baked Buffalo Mac-N-Cheese, is a mega-upgrade on the traditional comfort food. This is not your grandma's recipe - the blackened chicken (made fresh daily) adds protein and a burst of flavor, along with a kick of house-made buffalo and cheddar ale sauce. Topped with crunchy Panko and served with a side of bleu cheese crumbles, it's a meal all by itself. Next up - Banh Mi' Chicken Sliders, a twist on the Vietnamese sandwich. I will be going back for these. Shredded chicken served on sweet Hawaiian buns and loaded with pickled vegetable relish, soy aioli, cilantro, and sweet potato fries (not soggy at all, which is difficult to achieve) with an additional side of the sauce for dipping? Yes, please. Fair warning - you're

22 |

April 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

probably going to ask for a bucket of the sauce. Finally, I tried the Bacon Wrapped Bratwurst. I'm normally not a huge Brat fan, but it was the best I've ever had. The trimmings completely change the flavor - candied onions, curry mustard, and jalapeno-pickle relish served on a chewy pretzel bun, and the side of seasoned steak fries seals the deal. The sausage itself has a southern California food truck vibe, which is not surprising, since that's one of the several places Camp honed his culinary skills. Next trip: Cornmeal Fried Pickles (with a side bucket of soy aioli, of course), Ale House "Sloppy Joe" and a Ditto Sundae. Unplugged offers acoustic live music Saturdays and Sundays, two weekly dish specials, and family seating. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Sun & Tues-Thurs 11 a.m.- 11 p.m./ Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-2 a.m./ Closed Mondays/ Reservations Accepted. GLASTONE Versatile Morganfield-based cover band looking to make waves in the Evansville music scene

"W

e actually started out trying to go the Christian music route in 2012," GlasTone vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah Slaton reveals, providing a surprising account of the popular western Kentucky cover band's early days. Despite being signed to a management group at the time, the bookings that were promised never materialized; ties were eventually severed and the focus switched to a more rock-based approach, with the intention of playing local bars and restaurants in Morganfield. The change in style and shift to music-friendly venues paid off almost immediately. "Things really seemed to turn around - one show led to another," Slaton says. GlasTone's first gig as a newly-minted secular outfit took place at Verlie's and featured a mix of the classics and the contemporary - everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Hootie & The Blowfish and Adele. It was a wonderfully strange brew that fueled an unexpectedly rabid response. A number of equally high-energy gigs followed, notably at the White Buck

Winery where the guys routinely packed the place. For two years, core members Slaton, brother Jesse Slaton (vocals/bass/piano) and Anthony Brown (drums/percussion) bounced around Morganfield joined by an additional guitarist and vocalist. But by 2014, the latter two had jumped ship. The void was duly filled by vocalist/guitarist Greg Burnette, an acquisition that led to a rechristening of the band. However, the new "Morgan's Field" moniker was short-lived. "The name GlasTone always got a much better response, so we reverted back to that," Slaton explains. With Burnette in the fold, the sound took on a harder edge to adapt to his playing style and higher vocal range the likes of ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and Poison all became part of the band's repertoire. So did a few choice bro-country tunes and pop outliers such as "Stepping Stone" by the Monkees. The fans ate it up. "That's the biggest compliment we get with this band that we never play the same genre twice and completely change things up," Slaton says.

Not long after, the reconfigured GlasTone played a trio of defining shows over the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend, storming the Old Barn Door in Sturgis and a couple other area bars, jamming them all to capacity. "It was so crowded that the waitresses couldn't get to the band - I thought the fire marshal was going to close things down," Burnette says. "But it was great because a wide variety of people came to those shows - and a lot of familiar faces." The GlasTone family grew again in 2015 when vocalist/bassist/percussionist Nick Wright came on board and premiered with the guys over the Kentucky Derby weekend. Interestingly, his acceptance into the band was effectively based on a lie - or an exaggeration of sorts. "Greg called and said, 'hey, you play a little bass, right?' and I said, 'sure, I have a bass guitar.' Nah - I'd only played bass twice before," Wright laughs. But as Burnette freely admits, "We knew it - but we just loved the hell out of him, so it was fine." With a solid lineup and a devoted Kentucky fanbase, GlasTone are now looking to branch out into southern Indiana, to build on their previous successes at Tiki Time where they've drawn big crowds. O'Brian's, Roca Bar North, Bokeh Lounge, Piston's, KC's Time Out Lounge - all are on the band's gig wish list. But until then, you can catch the guys at the VFW in Uniontown (4/1) and Old Barn Door in Sturgis (4/22). And they'll make a welcome return to Tiki Time on July 27. The South Carolina native takes center stage once again this month with Burn Another Candle, a heartfelt release "sweetened with originality, seasoned with love." It signals yet another chapter in her musical journey - an enchanting evolution of style and

Each brought something different and exciting, making for another great month of bluegrass.

Noam Pikelny / April 28: After recording three full-band solo albums, including 2014’s landmark Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe, the Punch Brothers banjoist is back with Universal Favorite, a beguiling mix of lovely originals and covers played solely by Pikelny. The bare-bones, captured-live feel of the songs is amplified by something never previously heard before on a Pikelny record: his voice. Indeed, he possesses a truly singular deadpan vocal delivery which reveals a rich, deep baritone at work.

MAGIC MEN LIVE! OWENSBORO CONVENTION CENTER | MAY 4 | 7 P.M.

Ladies' night at the OCC: Hugely popular male dance revue coming to Western Kentucky

T

he Magic Men Live! show may still be fairly new, but the origins of this concertlike spectacle date back to 2010 when creator Myles Hass and a few friends in the stripping business decided to try and take their talents to the next level. Initially based out of Detroit, the guys literally started from scratch with zero budget and no production values; they simply drove from state to state, dancing and taking it off in front of increasingly bigger crowds of appreciative ladies. Slowly, night after night successful night, the show caught fire. Case in point, Magic Men Live! sold out all three times it came to Evansville over the last few years. Now here we are in 2017 and the show has developed into an unstoppable juggernaut, complete with two full-sized tour buses and a semi truck to haul the production elements. Hass kindly spoke with News4U about the appeal of Magic Men Live! and more. What makes the Magic Men Live! show stand out from other male revues? We try to provide an experience unlike anything else. We take the male revue concept and fuse it with a concert experience and create something unique with different story lines, different characters and different fantasies that you can see in pop culture being brought to life on stage. And we always try to take a creative approach to whatever it is we're presenting, even if it's the most cliched theme. The show is always developing and we're pretty quick to incorporate something that's new - we'll

34 |

figure out a way to work it into the show so that it makes sense. Do you notice any difference in the reaction to the show from city to city? For us, we always get a very, very excited reaction - doesn't matter where we go. From small towns to major cities - from New York City to Casper, WY. Something that I've heard from a lot of venues is that our audience is the loudest that they've ever seen - even in comparison to other shows like ours, rock shows, concerts, anything. It's really good to hear, because the goal of our show is to break people out of their shells and get them to let loose and enjoy the night. Obviously, the name of the show is quite similar to Magic Mike, the popular Hollywood stripper movie. Was that just coincidental? Honestly, it was just an idea that came up before the movie ever came out. Basically the show is about fantasy and men - but we didn't want to call it Fantasy Men (laughs). So I came up with Magic Men - and then we found out that there was a movie that had just come out - Magic Mike - that was a huge hit. And we were like, 'oh, sh*t.' It could have been really good or really bad for us. Obviously, there's a little bit of confusion there [with Magic Mike], but we pay our tribute to the movie, because it really helped to bring a lot of awareness to the industry. So we give a tip of our hat to them during the show. But we don't want people coming

MAGIC MEN CREATOR MYLES HASS

to our show thinking that an A-list celebrity actor is going to be there. What's an example of an extreme reaction to your show? There's one in particular that really sticks out. I'm the host of the show and during my opening intro and monologue, this older woman just walked right up to the front of the stage while I was talking and was just waving me down like she wanted to have a conversation. So I went up to address her and she just looked at me, gave me a wink and said, 'How you doin'?' And then walked away. It was really bizarre. So, I said, 'Let's give it up for grandma in the house tonight' and everybody went nuts. Later on in the show, I brought her up on stage as a winner in one of the contests and she just went nuts, screaming and hugging me, saying 'thank you so much!' During that bit she got danced up against by four guys at the same time - we have it on video. It's hilarious, and she's just in heaven, on cloud nine. For tickets and more info, visit owensborocenter.com or call 270-687-8800. The OCC is located at 501 W. 2nd St. in Owensboro.

DJ ZAEDO

The comeback kid: From beating the odds to programming beats, North High School student embodies the power of music

W

hen 15-year-old Zaeden Hillenbrand - aka DJ Zaedo - took Lamasco Bar & Grill by storm on Saturday, March 4 at the Music Makes A Difference Benefit for Easter Seals, there wasn't a dry eye in the house - or a pair of feet that wasn't moving ecstatically to the electronic rush of sounds he was furiously mixing on stage. It was an emotional night for all, but particularly for Danielle and Fred Hillenbrand. Indeed, the incredibly proud parents could only look on in wonder at the miracle taking place. Truth be told, Zaeden wasn't ever supposed to experience a moment like this, not after being born 14 weeks early, given just a 5% chance to live. And if he did somehow beat the odds? Doctors predicted "no quality of life."

But talk about proving everyone wrong. Just take a look at the long list of medical issues that this amazing kid has overcome and in some respects, still deals with on a daily basis: Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, Jaundice, P.V.L. (Periventricular Leukomalacia), Patent Ductus Arteriosus, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Grand Mal Seizures, Cerebral Palsy, Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis. As mom tells it, they nearly lost Zaeden several times early on, a harrowing time for the Hillenbrands. "He was at the Women's Hospital for the first seven weeks. But then they said they couldn't handle his condition anymore," Danielle says. "He was taken by ambulance to Riley's Hospital - which was very stressful. We didn't think he was going to make it." Protocol should have seen Zaeden life-lighted to Indianapolis, but in a case of terrible timing, the 9/11 terror attack had just occurred and air space was restricted. But again, he beat the odds, arriving safely. After 18 long months of constant medical care, Zaeden finally came home. And thus began the long and winding road to recovery, to carving out a life for this courageous kid who refused to give up. It wouldn't be easy, of course. Especially considering that the Hillenbrands had four other children. "It was a difficult time, but we just adapted," Fred recalls. "It's true what they say - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." At age four, Zaeden became mobile by way of a miniature walker; at age six he started walking on his own. And despite the tightening of his left side due to

50 |

April 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

cerebral palsy which often impeded his ability to move comfortably, he loved to tag along on family hikes. "We had moved to Leopold, IN and owned some land that butted up against the Hoosier National Forest," Fred explains. "There was a big trail that we would walk all the time. Zaeden had a little separation anxiety so if he fell, he would get up and try to hurry and catch up - which would make him fall again. We don't know how he didn't break anything in all that time, but that's how he learned to walk." One of the most satisfying periods of Zaeden's childhood came at age eight, when he was drafted in as a March of Dimes Ambassador, complete with a special video documenting his time in the hospital and subsequent years of struggle and progress. He even picked out the songs for the soundtrack. This interest in music was something that Zaeden harbored even as a small child. "He's always had an ear for it from the very beginning," Danielle says. "He got started on Wii Music and Baby Einstein. In fact, he could pick up songs by ear that he'd hear on the radio and play the vocal lines on the piano." Eager to help their son develop his musical abilities, the Hillenbrands set him up with Patrick Preston, a local musician and studio engineer. The two worked well together, a partnership that eventually led to Zaeden discovering - and falling head over heels in love with - electronic music; specifically, the genre known as dubstep.

Things would never be quite the same again in the Hillenbrand household. That was about three years ago. Two years ago, Zaeden asked for a DJ set for Christmas. And his parents got him tickets to see his very first dubstep concert Excision and Bear Grillz with special guest and local hero Figure at the Egyptian Room in Indianapolis. The family road trip would prove to be quite memorable. "We went out to eat with Josh [Gard, Figure] before the show - it was very cool," remembers Fred. "After we got back, it became an all-day, every day dubstep obsession for Zaeden. We eventually had to say, 'take a break - play something else for a bit (laughs). ' But it's his passion." And that all-consuming passion began to translate into a serious talent as friends - like fellow DJ, Max Steinkuhl - generously shared their knowledge. "He came by a few times and walked Zaeden through everything," Danielle says. "He gave him DJ lessons, showed him how to do transitions between songs and helped him put together a set." Now all Zaeden needed was the proper venue to introduce his musical alter ego to the world. The opportunity finally came last month courtesy of Lamasco booking agent, Chris Passage. "He's got cerebral palsy too, and he's known Zaeden for a long time," Fred explains. "He is the originator of

the Easter Seals benefit concert which helps the disabled in our community, and he invited Zaeden to play the show. I thought about it for about two seconds and then said, 'let's make it happen.'" A preliminary set was scheduled for the weekend before, a run-through of sorts to give DJ Zaedo a chance to get comfortable on stage. He passed with flying colors. And then the big day finally arrived Saturday, March 4. Friends, family, North students, teachers and band directors - everyone flooded onto the dance floor to witness a miracle as the comeback kid stepped under the colored lights. In full DJ Zaedo mode, he began with a set of radio-friendly songs to ease into the proceedings before letting loose with a torrent of dubstep favorites that worked the crowd up into a serious frenzy (the pictures say it all). Clearly, Zaeden was totally in his element and having the time of his life. "There were lots of tears as I was watching - a smile from ear to ear," Danielle says. "People that didn't even know who he was were crying. It was hair-raising." Going forward, the plan is simple: schedule more gigs and help get the DJ Zaedo name out there in the public eye. "We're natural promoters, that's what we do anyway," Fred explains. We're setting him up to be a DJ and then we think the next step is producing. We're going to talk to Josh and get the right equipment and programs. Zaeden will figure it out on his own and take it from there."

WORLD CLASS ASSASSINS

Weekend warriors: All-original melodic rock band happy to take the show on the road

N

ot many local bands can say they've rocked the Victory stage in front of a standing room only crowd, but World Class Assassins did just that last month, opening for the bombastic arena-rock tribute act Hairball on March 11. Ironically, the initial invitation for the coveted gig was intended for Pieces of the Day, vocalist/guitarist Matt Camp's previous band which primarily covered the alternative and college rock hits of the 90s. But he didn't think twice about suggesting a replacement. In fact, Camp convinced organizers that the sound of his current, all-original project was actually a better fit, more aligned with Hairball's musical manifesto. And considering the enthusiastic response World Class Assassins received on the night, he wasn't wrong. "All around it was a fantastic experience," Camp says. "We played a 45 minute set and there was major applause after every song - the crowd was nodding along, clapping and pumping fists." Camp was joined on stage by his fellow Assassins, lead guitarist Bruce Patten, bassist Scott Burnes and drummer Eric Duke. While other members have come and gone over the last few years, the current WCA configuration is as solid as they come, particularly the bottom end. "Both Scott and Eric were in an Evansville band in the 80s that were huge called Intense Confession,"

52 |

Camp explains. "They've grown up together since they were 19, so that gives us a killer rhythm section." In addition, he and Patten have played together off and on for years, most notably in Blame the Radio, another very successful local cover band that eventually morphed into the Assassins. In short, these guys know each other really well. And that goes a long way in terms of both performance and songwriting - the latter being a prime focus for the group. "I take the time to write most of the lyrics - about personal relationships or things that I notice someone else going through," Camp says. "And then I take a blueprint to the band and we work through it together." The results of these sessions can be heard on the WCA EP via Bandcamp, five tracks of expertly-produced melodic rock that cover a range of influences, at times recalling the sound of the mid-to-late 80s on up through contemporary outfits like Breaking Benjamin. Without question, it's one of the most sonically impressive recordings produced in the area over the last decade. Much of the credit, according to Camp, goes to Greg Pearce from Seven Hills Recording out in McCutchanville. "He's a pro by definition. I also used to be in a band called Calling Corners which toured around a lot, and we did pre-production with Greg for our album," he says. "When I heard how his skills were

April 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

coming along, we just skipped the whole pre-production part and started working with him exclusively [for the WCA EP]." A full album is reportedly on the horizon but the immediate concern is an April video shoot. Then Camp intends to hunker down and flesh out the lyrics and musical ideas for another half-dozen songs or so. Performance-wise, the Assassins will continue to be "weekend warriors," as they refer to themselves, booking gigs regionally in major cities like Indianapolis, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville and St. Louis - all places that are more receptive to original bands. But they'll still find time for the occasional local show, too. "Since we only play locally a limited number of times, we always have a great crowd - we don't saturate the market," Camp explains. In fact, the Assassins recently stripped down for a well-received acoustic set at Unplugged Ale House in downtown Evansville. But ultimately, the band is more than happy to head out on the highway after a long work week. "The fact that me and the guys get to travel - to have that road time together and experience different clubs and cool places to eat, to carry that mystique of being an "out of town band" when we arrive that makes it all worthwhile." "SUCCESS" By John Thurgood

W

e started out as a band, not playing the music we wanted to play but playing the music we knew how to play, which only sort of sounded like music. But we were enthusiastic. That landed us a few shows at first. Sam Stevenson has been quoted on record saying, “They do the best version of "Beat on the Brat" I have ever heard.” He was talking about our cover of “Mother” by the recording artist Danzig, but we still felt pretty good about the press we were getting. The videos were just something we started doing to get our music out there. People died from exposure every day, but we weren't scared. The world had to know about our band, and we were willing to completely degrade ourselves to do it. At first, the videos were a few minutes long. Then themes developed. In one segment, Bobby pretended he didn't know how to love, and in another, we tried to teach him the meaning of the word empathy. Every segment after has built on Bobby's spurning heart. The FX Channel emailed us, and we ignored it, because we thought, “No way.” It had to be spam. When they called my mother's landline, it took me a full minute to realize the person on the other end was the number two executive producer for North American programming at the f-ing FX Channel. “Get out!” I yelled into the receiver too loudly. I was yelling at my mom, who was hovering over me like I was speaking to my probation officer. I have apologized since, repeatedly. (I love you, Mom!) Our show was canceled almost immediately. Our pilot did well. It cleared all projected expectations by a large margin, and by the second week, our show was the most watched program in our time slot. The problem started when we received an email from D.A.D.s (Dudes for Apathetic Dudes). They were offended by our plot line to remediate Bobby, and teach him how to love. Apparently there are a lot of apathetic dudes out there, because from the moment they declared a boycott on the show, it took only two weeks before we got a call from corporate. They were pulling the plug. Our lifeline to success had been severed. But it was cool. That was when we got the band back together.

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE

The Bachelorette finally gets more diverse, but is it for “the right reasons?”

D

allas attorney Rachel Lindsay made reality television history when she was cast as the first black Bachelorette this past February, after 12 seasons of The Bachelorette and 21 seasons of The Bachelor having only white leads. But choosing her seems more like an attempt by ABC executives to label themselves as open and diverse, instead of picking the best candidate for the job. Although I am glad ABC has tried to embrace more diversity on the show, choosing Rachel seemed so forced to me. Don’t get me wrong - Rachel is an amazing girl. But the more compelling choice for the titular role of rose giver and heartbreaker would have been to pick 24 year old dental hygienist, Kristina Schulman, who revealed during her first one-on-one date with past Bachelor Nick Viall, that she grew up so poor in Russia, that she was forced to eat lipstick as a starving child. She then ran away from home and was raised in an orphanage until age 12. All of America fell in love with Kristina and if Rachel had not been on the show or had not made it so far, I have no doubt that Kristina would have been the next Bachelorette. Again, I mean no disrespect towards Rachel. But it is already clear to me that the show’s producers are going to curate Rachel’s entire season on her race. On the “After the Final Rose” special, when the show made another historic turn by having Rachel meet four of her suitors live on the show, rather than on the traditional filming night in a few weeks at the Bachelor mansion in California, one white contestant had no problem bringing up Rachel’s race during his first impression with this cringe-worthy pick up line: “Once you go black, you never go back.” Look, I am beyond glad to see a black woman as the lead. It’s about time, truly. But focusing Rachel’s entire season on her race almost seems like a step back to me rather than a step forward. So what can ABC do better? Keep multiplying the amount of diverse contestants on the show and broaden their casting even farther so that by the time the next season of The Bachelor rolls around in 2018, there will be multiple women of various ethnicities to choose from to become the next Bachelorette. Tesla’s music is often referred to as heavy metal, but better described as blues metal, as the band’s lyrics stray from the themes popular in heavy metal, particularly those in the 1980s around the beginning of their career. Thanks to a die-hard, loyal fan base and their younger generation offspring, the critically acclaimed iconic Sacramento rock quintet has sold more than 25 million albums and performed to sold out crowds across the world. NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | FASHION ADVICE

TRI-STATE FASHION with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie

A new season means new styles and a chance to change up your threads a bit!

W

ithout a doubt, spring is the best season for fashion. This is the short time in the Midwest where we get to mix our winter and summer styles together to create numerous looks. Our tri-state mornings and evenings can still be a bit chilly, not to mention those cool, rainy days! So don’t be afraid to mix your darker winter cardigans with bright tanks and those winter boots with cute spring dresses. It’s totally acceptable to pull out those summer tops and mix them with winter sweaters and winter shoes to make a transitional outfit that pulls in both seasons.

"Wear looks that make you feel confident, playful, powerful, and good!"

Vintage floral patterns and neutrals with pops of color or vintage vibes are trending this spring. Invest in some of these adorable patterns, but don’t forget to utilize those great winter and summer pieces. Try layering tanks with lightweight sweaters, long sleeves with cute vests, or dresses with leg warmers and boot socks with your cute boots. Layering is essential in spring because of the many changes in temperature throughout a tri-state day! Here’s a little secret for you as you begin transitioning from your winter wardrobe to your spring one: don’t be afraid to mix patterns, genres, and unlikely colors! For example, it’s okay to mix blacks and browns, and just fine to mix golds and silvers! Wear a strand of pearls with a band tee, or even those high top kicks with a cute spring dress!

Lastly, for those especially warm and sunny days, try pairing your favorite torn shorts (holes are hot again this year) with a tee layered under your favorite sweater! You may even consider making it a motivational message tee to spread the kindness. Whatever you choose to wear, express yourself and wear looks that make you feel confident, playful, powerful, and good! Check out some of these new looks from Amerie Boutique in Newburgh where April’s local cause-of-themonth is Autism Evansville. Learn more at amerie.org or autismevansville.org.

NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | COMMUNITY & FAMILY

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

CASSIDY: There’s a particular sound that the VHS volunteers & staff are getting used to hearing. It sounds something like, “BOWROOOOOOO!” That would be Cassidy, with her signature Coonhound “bay.” She is a female Treeing Walker Coonhound mix and is about 3 years old. Cassidy came to the VHS from ITV when they ran out of cage space, so now she’s seeking her forever home! She will be a fantastic playmate for people who like to hike or run, and then will enjoy snuggles on the couch by night. She was adopted & returned once for having small potty accidents in the house when she got excited. We’re told Cassidy does great in the car, and loves kids & other dogs! Her adoption fee is $100. She’s already spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to go home TODAY! CARAMEL: It’s that time of year again… the Easter bunny is coming to town! Actually, several “Easter” bunnies, who will live for many, many Easters to come! Bunnies like Caramel, who spent several months at Posey Humane Society until she was transferred in to VHS who had more room and time for her. Caramel is young, only about a year old, and is an American Fuzzy Lop mix. She’s a female who has already been spayed, so she can live with other bunnies and is less likely to be territorial. She’s also learning to use a litterbox like a cat, so she’s prepared for her new inside-only home! Remember, please don’t EVER buy rabbits from pet stores or farm supply stores. Caramel and her friends think it’s pretty much the most awful decision ever, when there are wonderful bunnies waiting for homes in shelters across the country. Take Caramel home TODAY for only $30!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT THE REESE FAMILY & REGGIE & WIGGLES

North-sider Miranda Reese has been an animal lover all of her life. She grew up with dogs, mostly, but a few cats along the way as well. Now married with two small children - a seven-year old boy and four-year-old girl - Reese and her husband also have a one-year-old female Pit Bull / Mountain Cur mix that they adore. Not surprisingly, the kids love animals, too, so she decided that getting a bunny would be a good way to teach them the responsibility of caring for a pet. "We go to the VHS every couple of weeks just to see what new animals are in," she says. "We saw Reggie and Wiggles and we just fell in love. They were super sweet with the kids - I just thought it was meant to be." In fact, these two adorable bunnies are sisters, so they share a special bond, indeed. The Reeses took the furry little siblings home in early March, and they have adapted well to their new home, comfortably roaming around while the family dog looks on in amusement, eager to play. And reportedly, the kids are taking great care of their new buddies. "They clean the cage and feed them, bathe them every other day," Reese says. "It's so precious - the bunnies walk right up to them and jump in their laps." Another successful adoption!

BITZY: Bitzy is a 7-year-old male black cat! There’s a common misconception that black cats are bad luck, or evil. Nothing could be further from the truth and Bitzy’s here to prove it. He is affectionate and enjoys the company of people. He also plays nice with the 39 other cats who live with him in the Cageless Cat Lounge! Bitzy came to the VHS front-declawed, which makes him an ideal pet for someone who lives in a strict apartment complex, who is elderly, or who may have autoimmune issues. Adopt Bitzy for only $50, which includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, FeLV/FIV test, and more!

very year the VHS stages a number of high-profile events to raise money for the shelter and continue its mission of providing protection for homeless animals, intervention for animals in abusive environments, and community education to encourage prevention of animal abuse and pet overpopulation. Going, Going, Gone to the Dogs Benefit Dinner & Auction, the organization's biggest money maker, typically brings in over $40,000 annually, a huge boost to the budget - not to mention that it's a super fun evening with delicious food and friendly high-stakes bidding in the name of saving animals. 2017's theme will be "Downton Tabby" - a clever play on the popular PBS series that documented the lives of the Crawley family and its servants - and will feature both silent and live auctions plus a fantastic dinner. Tickets begin at $75/plate; benefactor level: $125; patron table of 10: $1,000; corporate table of 10: $1,250. More than ever, the VHS is making a huge impact on the community's homeless animal population through the organization's low-cost spay/neuter program which has greatly reduced the number of intakes at the shelter since its introduction in 2008. In fact, the euthanasia rate has decreased by nearly 70%! Come out and support the great work that the VHS does for our community! For event time and more info, visit vhslifesaver.org. Tickets are on sale now. Sponsorship opportunities are available. NEWS4U APRIL 2017 | RELIGION

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

IF GOD IS LOVE, LOVES MANKIND AND WANTS TO FORGIVE US FOR OUR SINS, THEN WHY IS THERE A HELL? The idea of hell is fraught with difficulty. Conservative Christians, who take the Bible literally, can quote chapter and verse about hell, “the lake of fire,” and eternal damnation. That is what they believe and you won’t talk them out of it. Your question presents one significant part of the problem. The idea of the God of Love eternally torturing and punishing people seems completely out of sync. I cannot reconcile the two ideas. But, there are various kinds of “hell.” Traditional definitions of hell often remind us that hell is whenever we are separated from God, from others, and from ourselves. Too often, we live this life in a hell of our own creation. Addiction is hell, abuse is hell - both separate us from one another and can lead us deeper into isolation and loneliness. Think of the number of ways we are separated from God, from others, and from who we are meant to be, and you’ll see varieties of hell. Authentic faith challenges us to bridge the distances we created and allow to be created that are the cause of separation; it dares us to reach out in compassion and kindness and heal the wounds that separate us from each other. Hell, especially the one we created for ourselves, is always conquered by the power of love. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

Somehow It’s Already Been A Year... My wife and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary this month. Since so much has changed in one year’s time (notably us both starting new jobs and leaving old ones) it’s one of those strange feelings of sometimes seeming like we just got married, but other times like it’s been far longer than a year - but in a very good way. Perhaps we just happen to be incredibly lucky, but marriage has been relatively easy so far. We both keep nothing from each other, and we keep each other from nothing as well. My wife is very understanding that between my full-time job, writing for the magazine, and a podcast (including writing and recording music for it), saying I have a lot on my plate is a bit of an understatement. Likewise, I understand that she is heavily involved with the nonprofit organization her and her mother run as well as having friends who want her to go see movies I have no desire in watching (for instance, I’m very thankful for not having to sit through Beauty and the Beast). Similarly, we help each other out with these responsibilities. I help do some mild IT work for them (setting up new equipment, configuring networks and

printers, troubleshooting hardware problems, etc.), while my wife - who listens to far more podcasts than I - is great at giving suggestions and constructive criticism for my writing and podcast. And we both are glad to be each other’s sounding board when we’ve had a bad day at work, or the first to say congratulations for jobs well done. Coincidentally, marriage has made me a better person. I’ve spent many years being a thoroughly negative and angry person, and learning to compromise - as well as trying my best to put someone else’s needs before my own - has definitely taught me patience. Most importantly, it’s helped me learn to not nitpick every single detail and start a huge argument over it. (On a similar note, this has reduced the number of social media arguments I barrel headfirst into like a posthijacking Leeroy Jenkins.) Like so many things in life, you can’t expect to get anything out of relationships if you don’t put anything in yourself. Marriage is a partnership, and while finding the right partner is a big part of the equation, we can’t forget that being a good partner yourself is just as important.

WORDS FROM WHITNEY

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

DOES WINNECKE DESERVE A THIRD TERM?

Do you and don't apologize - just make sure you're doing it for yourself

"The problem for all women is we're identified by how we look instead of by our heads and our hearts." -Gloria Steinem I can still recall being in third grade and asking my mom when I could start shaving my legs. I have naturally thick, dark body hair, which I thought was weird and gross. Of course, this is not innate thinking, but ideals spoon-fed by a male-driven, capitalist society. As an eight-year-old, I didn't know this yet. So, when my mom said no, I did the exact opposite - I climbed into the tub and shaved my legs, forced to tell on myself when I screamed bloody murder after promptly chopping off half of my shin. And that's where it starts - legs, armpits, bikini line, eyebrows, mustache, and the inevitable random chin hairs that pop up out of nowhere with age. I cringe when I think of all the time and money I've invested on razors, waxing, and shaving cream. Now, as a thirty-something feminist, I no longer feel the need to modify my body to make others comfortable or adhere to societal double standards. In that same breath, I'll be the first

You've probably heard the old idiom, "Fish and guests smell after three days." The same could also be said for three-term executives. to admit that I rarely leave the house without a little make-up, when I notice those pesky witch hairs, I pluck them, I wax my upper lip, occasionally shave my legs so I can rub them together like a cricket for the four hours they stay smooth... But I do it because that's what I want to do. I also like to giggle at my stick-straight, fluffy pit kittens when I get out of the shower. I deal with misogyny daily. I choose my battles to maintain my own mental health. But I'll be damned if I'll apologize to anyone about my physical appearance. To me, that's part of what feminism is about - recognizing women as equal human beings capable of making their own decisions, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. Shave your legs, go natural, be a stayat-home mom, keep your last name. Do you and don't apologize - just make sure you're doing it for yourself. You're the only one who has to live your life. Signed, Whitney Patterson, a hairy-legged individual

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke recently announced he will be running for a third-term in office. In some areas in the country, this is a no-no. There are laws in the books that forbid some politicians from running for a third term, including the President. So here's Winnecke, trying to become the first Republican mayor in the city's history to accomplish this feat. If he wants to make history, there is a poignant question to ponder. Does he deserve a third term? While many of Winnecke's opponents have complained about how much of the city's money he's spent, the facts are that the city's finances are intact. Much of the money spent has gone to the revitalization of downtown. Winnecke has basically picked-up where former Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel left off. Mayor Weinzapfel brought the Ford Center to downtown much to the dismay of many. Since taking office, Winnecke has brought the IU Medical Center, a new hotel attached to the Ford Center, and the old Mccurdy building has been renovated for apartment living. The Tropicana casino is about to become a land casino which could make room to bring the LST from its current position to the area where the Tropicana boat sits now. Based on these accomplishments, Winnecke deserves a third term. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

TREVOR NOAH: AFRAID OF THE DARK NETFLIX As a counterpoint to one of the gravest, most somber comic book movies you’ve yet seen, I suggest enjoying a few lightheartedly keen chuckles with this stand-out comic. Afraid of the Dark, the recently released live stand-up comedy film from the newest Daily Show host, Trevor Noah, pushes envelopes in unexpected ways that only comedy really can. His routine is a gracious see-saw that lifted me into uncontrollable laughter and then back down to delightful little snickers, and I was really grateful for the ride. I have to add here, that while some may have been taken aback by the choice and performance of Noah as the new host of a beloved Comedy Central satirical news show, the comedian mostly does not rely on political punch lines for levity. He does, however, offer something that’s pretty rare: an unapologetically honest and skeptical perspective on ideas pertaining to racial conflict, immigration, and women’s issues, with unexpectedly hilarious results. Some of the set-ups seem to drag slightly, but for the most part the joke delivery is on point. One of the best parts of the routine is his trip to Scotland and his revelations about black James Bond. Don’t ask. Just watch. - Laura Engram

www.showplacecinemas.com You won’t hear Johnny Cash's “Hurt” play once throughout the entirety of this new X-Men movie. In fact, the man in black doesn’t chime in at all until the end credits. However, the truth is that Logan carries such grounded weight and raw human power, especially for the genre, that you can almost hear the dark steady groan, “Beneath the stains of time… I am still right here.” That teaser trailer you’ve been seeing… It’s spot on. If there was ever a movie I’d describe as double-edged, it would be this one. Apart from its moving dialogue and heavy storyline, the movie even takes your expectations for action in the Marvel Comics universe and unravels it into something very coarse and organic, yet visually unprecedented. The themes are very real and very strong and - at times - very heartbreaking. In light of this, fans of the comics will still be incredibly pleased with the final no-holds-barred portrayal of the Wolverine character, the most accurate to date. This story of a long-pained and guilt-conflicted loner, fighting both for and against family intimacy, has just cemented itself as the adoptive grandfather of superhero movies. Don’t take the little ones, but definitely see it. - Laura Engram

CLOUD NOTHINGS Life Without Sound Carpark Records Call it nerd rock with a rougher, fiercer edge, or call it a bit of poppunk on the mellowest of indica highs. Either way, Cloud Nothings have crunched out a reflective indie rock album which really sticks in Life Without Sound. I don’t have a whole lot of familiarity with the band, so I can’t say how this record compares to previous albums. However, I can say that those strikingly persistent drums and guitars progressively gnaw through lyrics that are plainspoken but deep. I honestly cannot get the choruses for “Internal World” or “Modern Act” out of my head, despite their “I’m alive but all alone” simplicity. Lead singer Dylan Baldi has one of those perfect rock band voices. Slightest bits of grit rip at the fringe of each elongated vowel while gaining sultry dark fullness on each of the lower notes. The pacing changes and solos in songs like “Enter Entirely” and “Realize My Fate” keep things feeling fresh as each slowdown pushes through more ruckus. You’ll be chewing on these sounds and ideas for some time after, and maybe even going back again. - Laura Engram

JULIE BYRNE Not Even Happiness Ba Da Bing! The wispy, trailing croon of Julie Byrne’s lovely voice, mingling with the undulating, rippling chime of her guitar will coax you into calm. I’m not exaggerating when I say that if you take the time to get lost in this album for a bit, you’ll make your way through the sweetly swirling note-play and thoughtfully come out the other side relaxed and revitalized. Not Even Happiness is a gorgeous billowing atmosphere of folksy charm mixed with healing words and vibrations. The album sets out with surety, on a quest for understanding and hope with the song “Follow My Voice." Byrne recalls that she’s “been called heartbreaker for doing justice” for herself, but admits that though she’s had her judgmental moments, she “will be here” with heart open to what may come. Every track feels like another step on this journey. The acoustic guitar and other instrumentals weave together a colorful trail through the seemingly mundane wrinkles in life, being searched-out and caressed into nothing by Byrne’s drawn-out whispers. Each track is varied and beautiful. From favorite “Sleepwalker” to “Sea as It Glides," this album simply soothes. - Laura Engram

MINUS THE BEAR Voids Suicide Squeeze Records Sometimes, a band can suffer more long-term damage from a good album than a bad one. In the case of Minus the Bear, any album they release will always be judged against their 2007 math-rock masterpiece, Planet of Ice. But while Voids sounds very little like that highwater mark, it certainly displays a logical evolution of the band. That’s not to say the album isn’t without flaws, but those few are purged early. Save for another great tapping riff from lead guitarist Dave Knudson, “Last Kiss” is the most underwhelming album opener in the band’s catalog. While vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jake Snider’s lyrics are as nihilistically poetic as ever, the vocal melody falls flat. And while it doesn’t feel forced, “Call the Cops” does feel lazy. The uninspired music and droning refrain “Pink window shades…” quickly grates on the listener. Fortunately, the band find their stride again on the follow-up, and don’t really lose it again for the rest of the album. Many songs, such as “What About the Boat?” and “Erase” (which could pass for a Dear Science-era TV On the Radio B-side) are more subdued and ethereal than on previous releases, but others like “Invisible” and “Robotic Heart” pulse with the same barely-contained manic energy of early releases. - Jonathan Gluff

ALI BUCKETS Temptation EP Self-released

ONLY AVAILABLE ON SOUNDCLOUD

While I’d be lying if I said my musical tastes didn’t gravitate toward guitar-oriented music, I do love good hip-hop. However, I’m not a fan of the current crop of “mumblecore” rappers; thankfully, neither is Ali Buckets. While other rappers are vying to see how many times they can say “yeah,” “uh,” and other lazy filler mutterings in 3-minute bursts, Ali brings skill and substance to a decidedly modern take on the genre with his latest EP, Temptation. Ali proves his ability to develop a unique rhyming scheme on "All Day All Night." Like the rest of the tracks, Adam True's production skills are an integral part of the music. He understands how to play to a rapper’s strengths, throwing in pauses, variations, and subtle flourishes to complement the rhymes and rhythms. "For the Night" is a clever indictment of hookup culture. Ali's flow apologizing for ghosting a fling sits atop an understated skittering breakbeat, backed by a repeating string sample hook. Its follow-up provides a glance into the darker side of that culture, subtly lamenting the insecurities bred by society’s selfie obsession (and managing to slip in a clever and fitting Nelly reference). Ali has some serious talent and potential, a serious up-and-comer that every hip-hop head needs to keep an eye on. - Jonathan Gluff

JUNIUS Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Life Prosthetic Records

TRAIN A Girl, A Bottle, A Boat Columbia Records

Junius’s latest release is a perfect touchstone for any metalhead who wants to point to the difference between “heaviness” and “harshness.” The Boston “post-metal” (I hate that term) outfit prove they’re capable of balancing thundering instrumental power with well-crafted vocal melodies and subject matter that carries gravitas as well.

Remember “Drops of Jupiter”? I do. I was a punk-rock kid, had never heard of Train before, but was blown away by the gravity in those first few piano chords. And when those glorious strings and vocals burst out of my Walkman and through my headphones, I knew I just loved these guys.

While “March of the Samsara” barrels out of the gate with a pummeling polyrhythmic gallop, “Beyond the Pale Society” follows with a chorus that’s as somber as it is catchy; its successor, “A Mass for Metaphysicians,” doesn’t fare too poorly in that category, either. All the while, tracks such as “Clean the Beast” find the band continuing to churn out sludgy downtuned riffs that would make similarly-heavy metallers Pelican proud.

Yes, I’d say we’ve all been pretty heartbroken since then. So what’s the verdict on A Girl, A Bottle, A Boat?

There’s no doubt that vocalist/guitarist Joseph E. Martinez’s singing bears a clear shoegaze influence. That inspiration colors much of the album’s music. Nowhere is this more prominent than the quintessential mid-metal-album instrumental break, whose tremolo-picked guitar lines swell amid waves of reverb that crash into the following song’s intro. And while that song, “The Queen’s Constellation,” isn’t the album’s strongest track, the transition certainly ranks among the album’s best moments. Jonathan Gluff

TIM KASHER No Resolution 15 Passenger Tim Kasher proved early on with his band Cursive that he could tell a gripping story. With his storytelling becoming more cinematic with each release (be it with Cursive, his side project The Good Life, or as himself), perhaps it’s fitting that his newest album is intended to accompany his upcoming directorial debut. But while it is a fantastic album in many ways, the subject matter seems a little too familiar. Like many of his concept albums, No Resolution focuses on a couple verging on a breakup… again. Cursive’s Domestica will forever be one of my favorite albums, but after at least four go-rounds with the same subject, perhaps it should be retired. Sonically, the album is a great mixture of all the elements that have become his trademarks. The strings that made their first appearance on The Ugly Organ complement nearly every song, gentle piano and acoustic guitar lines provide the structure for many songs such as “Break Me Open” and “Holding Out,” and the lyrics craft a clear display into a crumbling engagement. And while they may not be as raucous as they once were, the dynamic shifting between loud and quiet passages still plays a part on “No Secret” and “Post Script.” - Jonathan Gluff

Meh. It’s the old-as-time cliché of poppy-forgettable with a few lovely singles. Debut offering “Play That Song” twitters sweet ukulele beside Pat Monahan’s always gorgeous voice. It’s catchy, but definitely a formulaic nod to “Hey Soul Sister." While none of the other songs are absolutely irredeemable, most don’t stand out. Only two other tracks really impressed me. “Loverman” is an upbeat and fun 50's style doo-wop with, of course, a little ukulele for good measure. The one truly great song though is piano-laden closing track, “You Better Believe.” This ballad about a father’s faith as his daughter comes of age singlehandedly earned the album three stars instead of two. - Laura Engram

VAGABON Infinite Worlds Father/Daughter Records As the militant beat of “The Embers” sets out an uncompromising atmosphere for LætitiaTamko’s matter-of-fact and intimate words, the first thing you will notice between steady, fuzzy guitar strums, is the bass. It can be tough finding bassists that really try to inject their own character and attitude into the band, but here each smoldering, ovaled pluck works a steady groove into your soul. The bass growls throaty and funky woofs, perfectly accenting different chords and rhythms across Infinite Worlds, especially in songs like “Minneapolis." Tamko’s light, airy voice seems to teeter constantly on the edge of devolving into an angry screech, especially in the louder, more distortion-driven tracks like “100 Years." Her effort leaves you consistently engrossed with anticipation, and maybe even a bit of concern for when she might finally decide to let go. And if that opening track catches you off-guard with lyrical honesty, just wait until you reach the mesmerizing but penetrating “Cleaning House." This dazzlingly varied album ends softly and viscerally with hypnotic acoustic picking and the clean, pleading words, “Take what you need and go.” - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • April 2017

This Bloomington, IN brew pours up a clear, light golden-orange color with an ample but temporary white head. Its aroma is low key with a mostly malty aroma. I pick up a subtle grassiness too. The taste follows suit with a drinkable combination of mild maltiness, subdued grassiness and grains. The mouthfeel is light bodied, refreshing and drinkable. With its profile and low 5% ABV, this one would be good to relax with on a hot summer day.

A decent white head forms on this beer but evaporates quickly when poured into a traditional beer mug. Sweet malt scents mostly control the nose, but some hops come through also. Likewise, the taste begins with a hit of malt, followed by some hops, with malt flavors returning in the finish. This could serve as an excellent choice for a craft beer novice. Pair it with salad, mild shellfish, Monterrey Jack cheese or lemon custard tart.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear yellow beer that doesn't have a lot of taste - an average cream ale. I think it would be a good session beer while watching some sort of IU sport. The can says it has subtle flavors and I have to agree - it's just OK.

This Northeastern style American IPA pours hazy and unfiltered with a nice hazy earthy-orange color. Its thin head dissipates quickly and leaves generous lacing all the way to the finish line. The aroma is pleasant, mostly citrus-like hops. The mouthfeel is light and drinkable with an earthy piney hop presence and subtle caramel malts chiming. Overall, I think IPA lovers may find it a little too light but I’d encourage everyone to judge for themselves.

A decent white head rests on top of a deep golden beer and takes its time disappearing. The scent boasts a generous amount of citrus from the hops and grapefruit zest added to the beer. The tartness of the citrus hits the tongue with the first sip of the beer, and the hops stick around in the long finish. Hop lovers will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with spicy foods.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a cloudy amber-colored beer with a hint of orange hue. The can is very unique and I like that it's brewed in Hammond, IN. It has a very hoppy flavor but not like some of the other IPAs. This one is pretty sweet, and I can taste the grapefruit flavors. I had never heard of this beer, but I'll be looking out for other offerings that may come this way.

TAXMAN BREWING CO. HOP COLLECTOR

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75

This brew is essentially an IPA fermented with Belgian-style yeasts. The outcome is very good. It pours up hazy orange in color and builds a one finger white head that leaves generous amounts of lacing. The nose is very nice with floral and citrus hops and the unmistakable sweetness of the Belgian yeast. Thankfully, the taste follows its aroma. An excellent mouthfeel combines with the full flavor of a combination of hops and yeasts. This Indiana brewery is impressing me with their lineup.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A substantial white head forms on this Belgian-style IPA after pouring it into a tulip glass. Complex fruity aromas usually found in Belgian beers control the scent profile. The first tasting of the beer offers a nice balance of sweet malt and bitter hop notes that dance back and forth, but the hop presence stays in the finish. It could pair well with aged Cheddar cheese, spicy beef dishes or crème brulee.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a cloudy yellow beer. I like the sweet Belgian flavors but I also like the extra hops flavor - didn’t think I would but I'm pleasantly surprised. This beer also boasts a 6.5 % ABV. Usually I don’t like it when breweries blend two different styles of beer but this one works.

DOGFISH HEAD SEAQUENCH ALE

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

This is a real deviation from this month's other beers. It's based on a wheat beer formula and includes citrus additions. It pours a cloudy light yellow color with plenty of visible carbonation. There’s a one finger foamy off-white head, minimal retention and no lacing. The aroma features grainy malts,

light levels of lime citrus and hints of briny salt. The taste profile features tangy and tart with a moderate amount of lime and lemon light maltiness with a touch of wheat and moderate saltiness. I didn’t care for it at first. The mouthfeel is light and after mostly finishing it the brew began to appeal to me more. I judge this to be a good summer cooler. It’s a low ABV brew so maybe if you’re enjoying it while mowing grass or something you won’t cut your leg off.

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.25

A thick white head tops this cloudy golden ale and never totally evaporates. Citrus notes from the limes used in the brewing process

fill the nose, but without overpowering it. The beer tastes light and crisp on the tongue, with lime flavors coming through slowly at first, but picking up in the finish along with salt. This might see a rise in popularity during the summer. Pair it with goat cheese, shellfish or grilled chicken.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This beer looks like a light hazy wheat. It's a sour and generally I'm not a fan. I'm unsure why they make them but someone must enjoy them. Anyhow, If you want a sour beer with lime, this one's for you. I'm just not a fan of flinching as I try to drink beer. It is what it is.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

OSKAR BLUES BREWERY HOTBOX COFFEE PORTER

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

I have to admit. I waited to review this one as a breakfast brew. Its recipe includes cold brew coffee. It pours black but not thick looking. The head is short and beige with some retention and no notable lacing. The nose is of roasted coffee, roasted and dark malts, and chocolate. At 30 IBUs there’s no noticeable hoppiness. Coffee flavor dominants up front with roasted, not too sweet malt notes followed by hints of chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium and Hotbox is surprisingly drinkable. ABV is moderate so no problem there. This one ranks high in the coffee based brew list for me. It’s great!

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick tan head grows on this porter once poured into an English pub glass. The opaque ale beneath it seems so dark that it looks like a black hole. A nice combination of roasted malt and coffee overtones control the nose. The coffee notes first hit the tongue with a sip of the beer and keep up the pace during the long finish. Coffee lovers will want to drink this for breakfast.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a very dark beer with a great coffee aroma. It has a 6.5 % ABV and a real smooth, light chocolate flavor. It's definitely better than your average porter. I really like the sweet malt flavor - will have to look out for this one.

10 BARREL BREWING CO. JOE IPA

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4.5

This American IPA is my favorite this month. It pours a cloudy golden color and develops a hefty two finger head and a lot of lacing. The aroma is of tropical citrus, biscuit, toasted, and caramel malts. The flavor comes in waves leading off with biscuit, caramel, and lightly toasted malts then the hops, citrus and herbal. Finally the finish where the hops kick a pleasant bitter finale. The body is medium, mouthfeel is medium and the flavor is full. Homerun! I recommend this one.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thin white head comes to the top of this golden IPA and quickly disappears after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. A generous amount of fruity hop notes first dominate the nose, with a hint of pine notes following. After a moment on the tongue, the fruity flavors return and the overall hop presence stays in the finish. People who enjoy IPAs should try this and pair it with spicy food like Mexican cuisine.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

I can smell the hops right away. This is a clear amber-colored beer with good carbonation and a 6.9% ABV. I detect some sort of odd flavor but can't put my finger on it - not bad, just unidentifiable.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY. 74 |

elcome to spring. The flowers are blooming, the leaves are turning color, and the beer is getting hoppy. There are some really great IPA beers out on the market right now. And without a doubt, session IPAs are all the rage. That lip-smacking hoppiness that dries your mouth out after a few good drinks is what everyone is looking for. But those smooth drinking IPAs are making it easier to transition from your regular light beer into the world of hops. I want to introduce the Evansville market to Mad Anthony Brewing Company out of Fort Wayne, IN, a new brewery that is making its debut in the area this month. I find their brews to be rather smooth and very sessionable with great flavors and a very nice balance of hops, a combination

that makes them very enjoyable and easy to drink. Here are two of Mad Anthony's best offerings that craft beer enthusiasts will definitely want to try. Hopsquatch is an American style IPA brewed with a single variety of hop and a simple American grown grain bill allowing the hop to be "front and center." The real star of this ale is the Mosaic hop which gives off a complex array of tropical fruit, pineapple, herbal and earthy characteristics. Much of the hop was used late in the boil preserving all the character of the hop without going over the top on bitterness. 6.8% ABV / 55 IBUs Auburn Lager is an American style Amber

Lager with a rich, malty, slightly sweet flavor and a refreshing hop crispness. This great brew won two awards in 2015: Gold Medal - Great American Beer Festival & Winner - Indiana Brewers' Cup European Lager. 5.1% ABV / 21 IBUs We look forward to seeing everyone at Beef's this spring. Come out and enjoy our great beer selection and sit out on the patio. On April 22 we will be supporting an Earth Day event being held at our next door neighbor, Rhythm Salon and Spa. We will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs out on the patio with proceeds going to Hoosier Environmental Council, Warrick County Animal control, and PAWS. WALTER THE WINE GUY A taste of springtime: Liquor Locker's resident expert suggests that you go Barefoot this season

April is here so let’s get ready to chill!

help your budget and still drink good wine.

A lot of you may be expecting to get words of wisdom about wines that may be from small to medium vintners, but today let’s talk about one of the LARGEST producers in the business, Barefoot.

First, let’s talk about the sweet wines. They make Moscato, Pink Moscato, and Red Moscato. This gives you a few options in this category. The Moscato is light, fruity, and a true crowd pleaser! Its sweetness is balanced with tartness that makes it finish very clean and doesn’t linger on the palate. They also have Barefoot Bubbly, which also comes in the same three versions. This is a great addition to your favorite wine spritzer for summer patio drinking.

Barefoot wines are produced by the Gallo family who owns a large percentage of the grapes grown in California. This affords them the opportunity to bottle very good wine for an extremely low price! So, for the consumer, you get very good wine for a price that belies the price point. Since the weather is getting better, the quantity of wine you may be drinking will increase; this makes it possible to

Next, is semi-sweet versions. For this they have a very good Riesling and Sweet Red. These wines are fruity, but not too sweet. Serve them chilled and enjoy. They also work well with light

food and cheeses. Lastly, the dry wines. They make Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc in white wines, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot in reds. Foodies say you should not cook with a wine you cannot drink. There are many that fall into this, but Barefoot is NOT one of them. They are very drinkable and are wines that don’t need a lot of fuss to enjoy. I strongly suggest you give these a try, you will be pleasantly surprised! They deliver great flavor for a minimal price. Let me know what you think. I hope to see you in the stores soon and I hope the April Showers miss your patio drinking! Walt

BARANCIK'S BASEMENT BAR "I

'm not even a real big drinker - it's just a good spot for friends to come over and hang out," says Newburgh resident Dave Barancik, modestly referring to what just may be the coolest home bar in the tri-state. Some eight years ago, he was in the process of having a house built but left the basement unfinished. With a bar area already framed in, the initial plan was to tackle that project DIY-style, but eventually, a more professional approach won out. "My wife pestered me enough to where I decided to hire Tony Christian from Remodeling Solutions," Barancik explains. "He's my old neighbor - I've known him for years." It ended up being a very smart move.

involved," Barancik says. "I told him to run with it." And run with it, Christian did. The finished bar is a work of art with an actual storefront to separate it from the rest of the basement area. Inside, it's spacious, able to seat about 18 people - handy for big sporting events like the Super Bowl which served as the bar's unofficial grand opening. "People were really impressed," Barancik says. "But the best reaction was from the contractors who've seen it - guys who have been in hundreds of houses. They both said it's the coolest home bar they've ever seen."

Â

Looking to create the feel of an "old school Irish pub," Barancik provided Christian with some sketches and pics of what he hoped to achieve. Christian then reportedly came back with a ton of inspired ideas, books of materials and trims, woodworking and varieties of brick. "Once I saw that he totally got it, I figured that the only thing that could go wrong was if I stayed
