NEWS4U NOVEMBER 2019 | CUISINE & DINING

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

This is a recipe that you may have seen in a popular restaurant in town, but I’m telling you that you can make it so much better! In my mind November marks soup season - mostly because that’s when I end up getting sick. In fact, I was supposed to teach a cooking class featuring this soup and ended up getting sick, so I want to share it with you. This recipe does contain meat but could easily be vegetarian if you increase the amount of cauliflower and kale.

Find more recipes on

SLOW COOKER LOW CARB ZUPPA TOSCANA SOUP (keto friendly)

Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book:

The Best is Yet to Come

Serves: 10 / Prep time: 10 mins / Cook time: 4 hrs INGREDIENTS: •

1 pound mild or hot ground Italian sausage

1 tsp oil

3 garlic cloves, minced

36 oz of low sodium chicken broth (I used 2 entire jars of homemade broth, but ALWAYS recommend LOW sodium)

1 large cauliflower head diced into small pieces

3 cups chopped kale or spinach

¼ tsp crushed red pepper

1 tsp salt

½ black pepper

½ cup heavy cream

DIRECTIONS: •

Brown the ground sausage in a skillet over med-hi heat until done (until the pink is cooked out).

Drain the sausage, leaving just enough oil to sauté the onions until they are translucent. This usually takes 3-4 minutes.

Add the sausage, onions, garlic, chicken (or vegetable stock if vegetarian), garlic, kale, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to the alloy cooker.

26 | NOVEMBER 2019

Cook on hi for 4 hrs or low for 8 hrs.

Add the heavy cream and serve.

Serve hot.

Just make it taste good!

And yes, you'll want to make reservations on the weekends - it gets busy.

Interestingly, the town of Story - founded in 1851 - was bought in the early 1980s and essentially brought back to life. Part of that reconstruction included the founding of the Story Inn and ever since, it's been a popular tourist destination.

Old South Bar-B-Q

Now let's head down to Owensboro, KY, where some of the world's best BBQ is waiting for you at Old South. Just 45 minutes or so from Evansville, it's more than worth the trip. with Marisa Patwa NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE FIERCE AND FUNNY FEMALE-CENTRIC FILM Lately, I have been sick of all of the remakes and reboots in Hollywood and was a little apprehensive when I heard about the new Charlie’s Angels film (in theaters 11/15) - especially after the failed ABC show in 2011 starring Friday Night Lights’ Minka Kelly. The prior two Charlie's Angels movies starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore are also two of my favorite films of all time and I was worried about this version not living up to those classics. (Yes, I know there was a 1970s show, but I was born in 1993, so it’s safe to say I never had a Farrah Fawcett poster plastered on my ceiling.) But with new Charlie's Angels stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (still soaring from playing princess Jasmine in yet another remake of Disney’s Aladdin) and newcomer Ella Balinska - who I honestly have a girl crush on just from watching her handle a huge gun with a deadly look on her face in the trailer - I am thrilled with the out-of-this-world casting for this reboot. And with creative genius Elizabeth Banks not only writing and directing the film like the boss babe she is, but taking it a step up by playing the iconic Bosely, I couldn’t be more stoked to watch this cool, new version. Speaking of angels, Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke is one of the purest, sweetest and quirkiest actresses out there, which she showcased in the romantic drama Me Before You (2016). Funnily enough, her love interest in that film, Sam Claflin, is also in the new Charlie’s Angels. But back to Clarke, who plays a hardedged, unlucky singer working at a department store as one of Santa’s elves in Last Christmas (in theaters 11/8) - and who has an uncanny romance with Crazy Rich Asians heartthrob, Henry Golding. With Emma Thompson helping to write this film and having a role - no, it’s not a Love, Actually sequel, although I’d love one of those - there is really no other option than to grab your cutest elf costume, a box of tissues and purchase all of the movie theater candy you can because this one looks to be a true tearjerker. I highly encourage all women to not only go see the femme fatales of Charlie’s Angels and the fiercely funny Last Christmas, but also take your male friends, because these female-centric films aren’t going to keep getting made unless we show the movie studios they are worth it. Besides, who wouldn’t want to watch Kristen Stewart beat up a bad guy in a pixie cut or Emilia Clarke sing holiday tunes in a green elf costume?

PASSENGER LIST (WEEKLY)

Transatlantic flight 702 has, by all accounts, disappeared. The official story of it being brought down by a bird strike is just satisfactory enough to make the public believe, but a sibling of someone on the plane isn’t buying it. This audio drama, written by The Bright Sessions’ Lauren Shippen features a star-studded cast (including Kellie Marie Tran of The Last Jedi) and a phenomenal mystery that harkens back to the best days of Limetown when listeners were throwing conspiracy theories around left and right. There’s a newsletter you can only sign up for by scanning a barcode they posted on Twitter; that’s the level of sleuthing Passenger List sets for eager fans and I love it. radiotopia.fm/

KNOWLEDGE FIGHT (TWICE WEEKLY)

It’s like a train wreck in slow motion. Slow enough motion it’s been happening for decades. Each episode Dan Friesen, a man who has the patience and morbid curiosity to watch thousands of hours of conspiracy theory powerhouse InfoWars, fills in fellow standup comedian Jordan Holmes on what horrors Alex Jones has visited upon the world this week. It’s easy to write off Jones as a goofy crackpot with sub-high school reading comprehension, but Knowledge Fight shows just how far he'll go to outright lie, spread baseless rumors, and chase ambulances in hopes of getting just enough fame to continue a show that’s hemorrhaging funds. knowledgefight.com

EDGE OF SLEEP (WEEKLY)

Markiplier has an audio drama now. That’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d type, but here we are. From QCODE, the studio that brought you Blackout (the last audio drama with a celebrity in the thumbnail artwork), Edge of Sleep has arrived with director/lead actor Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach. Fishbach plays a night watchman who clocks out one morning to find anyone who went to sleep the night before is dead. He and a small group of surviving people struggle to find out what happened before they themselves also fall asleep. qcodemedia.com/theedgeofsleep

NICE TRY! UTOPIAN (BETWEEN SEASONS)

A new series from Curbed, Nice Try! Utopian is a nonfiction series headed by the phenomenally talented Avery Trufelman (listeners will recognize Trufelman from many episodes of 99% Invisible). In this first season, he tells the fascinating stories of failed attempts to create utopian communities. From the very first European settlement in Virginia to the well-intentioned but doomed attempt to create the first desegregated suburb in the 1950s, Trufelman highlights some of the most high-minded people in history who thought they were the one who would crack creating the perfect society. They never were, of course, but hey, nice try! curbed.com/nice-try

MILITARY MAN ON A MISSION RETIRED STAFF SERGEANT VAN BOOTH PASSES THROUGH EVANSVILLE ON CROSS COUNTRY TREK TO COMBAT VETERAN PTSD AND SUICIDE

A veteran of multiple combat tours in Iraq, Staff Sergeant Van Booth is putting one foot in front of the other on the road to recovery from the horrors of war. And it's a very long road, indeed. Recently retired, the 42-year-old Tennessean is walking across the country to raise awareness for veteran PTSD and suicide while also shining a light on two programs very dear to his heart - Freedom Sings and Operation Song. The latter - which he credits with saving his life - helps veterans process their trauma through composing songs about their lives in military service. These therapeutic tunes are even professionally recorded, given a studio quality sheen as heard on Booth's "My Brother, Bo," which he wrote to commemorate his brother in arms, Channing Bo Hicks, killed November 17, 2012. Booth began his cross country trek nine months ago in San Juan Capistrano, CA, with an eye on reaching Myrtle Beach, NC, by the end of the year. The ambitious 2000 mile journey has drawn nationwide attention to his cause but Booth's message really hit home when he passed through Evansville on October 16 and 17 - with a cart carrying his stringless guitar in tow. (Every 500 miles, Booth adds a string to his prized instrument as a symbol of healing.) Interviewed for local newscasts, Booth - in full beard mode after months of traveling - took a break from walking long enough to talk about his mission and the lives that he hopes to touch along the way with his inspiring story. And then it was off to the next city... For more info, visit operationsong.org and freedomsingsusa.org.

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR PET MONTH! Senior pets are move-in ready. They know better than to poo all over the house - they’re grown ass adults. Seniors have mastered the art of cuddling. They know the difference between a Nylabone and a Jimmy Choo - because they’re grown ass adults. Here are a few older dogs and cats at the VHS needing homes. Adopt a Senior!

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents. BUD: Bud is a 6 ½-year-old male Shepherd/ Husky mix. He loves to sit “on” things… on his bed, on the chair, on the couch, etc. He sits so pretty on the highest surface he can reach. Bud is currently the VHS’ longest resident dog! What’s the reason, you ask? Well, he climbs chain link. Yeah. So he will either need to be on a leash or tie-out for all his outdoor playtime, or his family will need to have a wooden privacy fence. His adoption fee is $110 and he’s ready to go home today neutered, microchipped and vaccinated! ARTHUR & DUTCH: These guys are 8-monthold brother rabbits. They are bonded and must find a home together. Their caregivers describe them as curious and mischievous boys! VHS has tons of rabbits right now, thanks to the annual “Easter dump.” That’s when all those cute pet store bunnies that parents gave in and bought for their kids, have lost their appeal, and now end up in shelters. Bunnies live for 10+ years and can be amazing indoor litterbox-trained pets! Arthur & Dutch’s adoption fee is $100 for both and they’re already neutered – no spraying! Beethoven’s adoption fee is $110 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and more!

ISABELLA: Isabella is a female Shar Pei/pit bull mix! She’s shy and quiet, but very sweet. She gets along very well with many other dogs. She weighs 54 lbs. She also loves belly rubs and is a dream riding in the car! Isabella is about 7 years old but still has plenty of energy, love, and face kisses to give. Her adoption fee is $110 and includes her spay, microchip and vaccines.

WHITMAN: Whitman is the VHS’ longest resident, by a long shot. Keep reading. He has spent all of 2019 as the Clinic cat while the VHS team tried to determine the causes of his allergies. He even went to a dermatologist in Louisville, and he lost one of his eyes from the severe scratching and ulceration due to the itching (even with an Elizabethan collar on 24/7). The verdict was that he will need prescription food and minor oral meds for the rest of his life. It’s a bit more of a monthly expense, but not terrible! (Probably about $150.) Whitman still deserves a home and a family that can care for him. He is well-loved by the VHS team. His adoption fee is only $40 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and a multitude of medical tests, surgeries, and procedures already done by VHS. Plus, thanks to a generous grant from the Petfinder Foundation, VHS will cover the cost of the first six months’ worth of his medicine and food as long as you can agree to provide it after that for the remainder of his life - which, since he’s 8 years old, could easily be another 10-12 years!

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

A Gluten for Punishment (or “Celiac-ing Common Sense”) Welcome back to another edition of “Grinding Gluff’s Gears,” and this time, I brought sources from peer-reviewed studies to justify my curmudgeonly opinions. Disliking bandwagon jumpers is something I think that we all can fundamentally agree on as a country. And for the last decade or so, few wagons have had as many hop-ons as the gluten-free trend. That’s not to say there aren’t people who really do benefit from a gluten-free diet. Celiac disease sufferers are the biggest ones by far (especially in severity of symptoms), but there are also those with wheat allergies and something I’d previously never heard of called “non-celiac gluten sensitivity” or “NCGS” (Igbinedion et al. 2017). But even according to that study, only 6% at most (and 1% at the least) of the population are actually affected. With that in mind, in 2013, researchers at the University of L'Aquila in Italy conducted a study of roughly 400 patients claiming gluten-sensitivity. Their results? “86% of patients reporting gluten-related symptoms have neither NCGS, nor CD (celiac disease), nor WA (wheat allergy)” (Capannolo et al., 2015). It should be noted that some studies (such as Aziz, Hadjivassiliou, & Sanders,

2015) have cast doubt on the very existence of NCGS, possibly linking it not to gluten in general but specific proteins in gluten-containing cereals, while others have recognized the “fad component” of the gluten-free trend as a likely cause of the uptick in diagnoses (Fasano, Sapone, Zevallos, & Schuppan, 2015). Furthermore, if we take out the patients with NCGS from the Italian study, it brought the total of “gluten-sensitive” patients who could in fact tolerate gluten to a whopping 93%. Am I saying that 93% of people claiming a gluten allergy are lying? No, certainly not. But when there’s a scientific consensus that high, it’s reason to wonder whether the person ordering the cauliflower pizza crust isn’t simply a hypochondriac or poseur. TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

ELECTION PREDICTIONS With the November elections on Evansville's horizon, it's time to make predictions. But with no polling data to go by like you see in statewide and national elections, it makes the process a little harder. It will be interesting to

see if 'future Bryan' had this one right. I need to redeem myself after predicting a Hillary landslide in 2016. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke (R) vs. Steve Ary (I) & Bart Gadau (L): PREDICTION - Ary and Gadau will split 15% of the vote and Winnecke will become the first GOP mayor to win a third term in the city's history. 1st Ward - Timothy O'Brien (R) vs. Ben Trockman (D): PREDICTION - O'Brien will win easily with 72% of the vote. Somewhat of a pickup for the GOP since current councilman McGinn switched from Republican to Independent.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher

(HALF) MARATHON MAN

If you don't mind, I'm going to take the month off from griping about the world (no, really) to share a more uplifting story about redemption and whatnot - mostly about feeling a little less old, if only for a day or two. Some of you out there probably took part in the Evansville Half Marathon in early October, sweating your way through 13.1 miles at the break of dawn while the rest of the city slept in on a beautiful Saturday morning. I was one of those wannabe athletes who pseudotrained, harboring this vaguely crazy idea that I might top my time from 2011 (my last competitive race) when I finished in 1:50 and some change - but also damaged my left heel in the process. I would later re-injure said heel and be forced to sit on the sidelines for an extended period. Then I discovered the most magnificent shoe on the planet: Hoka. (As I like to say to no one in particular: "Hoka? No joke-a.") Like a gift from Atalanta, the Greek goddess of running, this phenomenal footwear totally changed the game. In a matter of just two weeks, I was once again pounding the streets of Evansville just like the old days with

2nd Ward - Natalie Rascher (R) vs. Incumbent Missy Mosby (D): PREDICTION - Mosby came out bloodied in a hotly contested primary but she has the name recognition and the support of the southeast machine. The Dems might want to groom her for mayor. She'll win with 60%. 3rd Ward - Stephen Melcher (R) vs. Zachary Heronemus (D): PREDICTION - Melcher served as councilman in this ward for years...as a Democrat. As a Republican, Melcher will win with 60% despite the Jacobsville area giving him a scare.

only minimal wear and tear thanks to the incredibly spongy - and completely forgiving - soles of those heavenly Hokas. Like running on a cloud, really. Still, I was wary of pushing things, sticking to my every-other-night five mile routine throughout the 2019 dog days of summer. But in the back of my mind, I couldn't shake the urge to take things up a notch - to once again transform into the (Half) Marathon Man. Well, folks, not only did I run the race again, I managed to shave a little over 30 seconds off my 2011 performance, finishing in 1:49:54. Take that, Father Time. As you can imagine, I was pretty, pretty, pretty stoked. But seeing as this is a column entitled Maybe I'm Just Getting Old, you know such victory celebrations can't last long. In fact, just two days out from my big accomplishment, I walked into a local fast food restaurant and was given an unsolicited senior discount, despite being years away from collecting Social Security. Like an arrow through the ol' ticker. On the plus side, I saved $1.15.

4th Ward - Archie Carter (R) vs. Alex Burton (D): PREDICTION - The biggest surprise here is that the GOP even found a candidate to run for this open seat. Burton will win easily. Throwing a number out there I'll guess 78%.

6th Ward - Paul Abramson (R) vs. Incumbent Jim Brinkmeyer (D): PREDICTION - Abramson's never had the backing of his own party. The union people and nut clubbers will come out in full force and Brinkmeyer will win easily with 75%.

5th Ward - Incumbent Justin Elpers (R) vs. Jennifer Yaser (D): PREDICTION - Elpers, who certainly doesn't have a problem shying away from controversy on issues he feels are important, should be able to hold this seat but it might be close. He'll win with 55%.

City Council At-Large - Reps Ron Beane, David Christmas & Alex Schmitt vs. Dems Kaitlyn Morley, Gina Ungar & Incumbent Jonathan Weaver: PREDICTION - Weaver finished third in the primary. This could spell bad news for the Dems. The GOP will win all three seats. No Dem at the top of the ticket will haunt them in this race.

PEAKY BLINDERS SSN 5 BBC/NETFLIX

After four solid seasons on BBC and Netflix, Peaky Blinders returns with an only slightly-less impressive season five. Fortunately, even when it’s not great, it’s still really good. The core cast (notably series star Cillian Murphy) delivers great performances again, and series newcomer Brian Gleeson takes a masterful turn as the treacherous Jimmy McCavern. Few antagonists have presented such a threat to Murphy’s Tommy Shelby, and I guarantee you’ll despise him by the end of the second episode. My only real gripes are that the middle episodes get a tad boring, and that every episode still features someone walking through a factory in slow-motion to a booming, heavy blues soundtrack that sounds like a bargain bin Black Keys. (Watch the series and you’ll see what I mean.) While still enjoyable, I find myself hoping they tie things up with the already-announced sixth season before they really jump the shark. - Jonathan Gluff

STURGILL SIMPSON PRESENTS SOUND & FURY NETFLIX

“One of my favorite country singers just put out an anime on Netflix to accompany his new album” is a sentence I never thought I’d type, yet I pressed “Send” on that very message to a friend a few weeks ago regarding Sturgill Simpson’s Sound & Fury. Aside from a few genre touchstones like Akira, Attack On Titan, and One Punch Man, I’m really not an anime fan, but this certainly was enjoyable. The album is a stark left-turn from his previous slightly more traditional (but still boundary-pushing) country, blending fuzzed-out psychedelia, synth-rock, blues, and even some Daft Punk-inspired EDM. With a story written by Sturgill and direction by multiple anime veterans, the animation is top notch. It’s a pastiche of style and social commentary, with over-the-top violence, a Bollywood-style dance scene, and a great deal of pathos. It’s a weird one, for sure, but a compelling view nonetheless. - Jonathan Gluff

WU-TANG: AN AMERICAN SAGA HULU

Step into the 36 Chambers with the Wu-Tang Clan in this weekly series chronicling the origin of the legendary rap group. The dialogue is well-written, the actors (many who are up-andcoming rappers themselves) do a great job, and seeing TJ Atoms as ODB is like watching Dirt McGirt himself come back to life. The direction can be a little spotty at times, though: For instance, an otherwise poignant and well-constructed scene serving as a metaphor for the Eric Garner case is nearly ruined by a corny chain of forced reaction shots from the individual members as a low-res computer-generated bird flies past each one. Oof. And as a longtime fan of the ‘Clan, I can say the show definitely takes some artistic license with historical accuracy. Yet despite these shortcomings, it still captures the essence of the group and shows just why “Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nuthin’ to [mess] wit’.” - Jonathan Gluff

WILCO Ode to Joy dBpm Records

4/5 There's no irony in the title to Wilco's eleventh album. The Jeff Tweedy-driven indie rock band is back in a pretty darn good mood, if a little melancholic here and there. Perfectlytimed for the changing of the seasons, Ode to Joy captures the soft, chilled, reflective feel of fall, particularly on album standouts "Hold Me Anyway" and "An Empty Corner" - both well-thought out, slow-burners built on carefree acoustic strumming with woozy vocals. Elsewhere, "Quiet Amplifier" is even more laidback, gaining momentum incrementally over six hypnotic minutes filled with droning bass and chiming guitar notes. Collectively, the songs on Ode to Joy act as a sort of ongoing lullaby that draws you in and won't let go. - Johnny Fletcher

MORGAN DONAHUE Grind Self-Released

4.5/5 All-around instrumental wizard Morgan Donahue is one of the tri-state's most respected musicians - not to mention singer/ songwriters. His self-proclaimed "gypsy jazz" approach to composition is in full effect on Grind which finds the former Lamasco's Got Talent winner combining his Eastern European influences with down and dirty blues, coming across at times like Tom Waits hanging out in the Mississippi Delta. Slinky tracks like "Spine in My Back" get a kick in the pants from a dream backing band featuring Erik Duke (percussion), Bill Sievern (keys), Jonas Cowan (guitar), Monte Skelton (sax) and Wade Baker (horns). Then there's the rousing "Jack the Pooch" and funky "Get It Right," both driven by Donahue's air-tight bass playing. But the real surprise here is the closing "Down By the River" which sheds all the bells and whistles, leaving nothing but raw vocals and handclaps to do the heavy lifting. And it works a charm with Donahue in full sermon mode testifying to the deep love of a woman. Amen. - Johnny Fletcher

REFUSED War Music Burning Heart Records

2.5/5 Refused’s 1998 classic The Shape of Punk to Come proved to be prophetic in its title, influencing countless bands in the ensuing years. Unfortunately, like 2015’s comeback Freedom, War Music is yet another subpar album. “REV001” and “Blood Red” bear more in common with the “tough guy” hardcore of their early material, the ill-advised clean vocals in “I Wanna Watch the World Burn” sound like a second-rate Davey Havok, and the opening of “Malfire” sounds like a Tool outtake. Luckily, there are a few highlights with “Turn the Cross” and “Damaged III” (points for the Black Flag reference alone), but this shows why they’d be - to quote one of their old classics - “Better Off Dead.” - Jonathan Gluff

STURGILL SIMPSON Sound & Fury Elektra While Sturgill’s departure from country may be unexpected for many, his live shows over the past few years have long foreshadowed it. Opener “Ronin” is a fuzz-soaked extended guitar solo that would fit on an early Ted Nugent album, while the follow-up, “Remember to Breathe,” is the closest thing to traditional country on the album. “Sing Along” and “A Good Look” (co-written by the legendary John Prine) feature scuzzy synths and dance beats, while “Make Art Not Friends” and “Mercury In Retrograde” recall some of Daft Punk’s best moments. If being friends with Shooter Jennings and getting snubbed by the CMA’s just like Johnny Cash aren’t enough to convince you he’s the torchbearer of Outlaw Country, this album will. Jonathan Gluff

JIMMY EAT WORLD Surviving Exotic Location Recordings I’ve been a big Jimmy Eat World fan since the early 2000s, but aside from 2013’s Damage, their output over the last decade-plus has been one exercise in mediocrity after another. Thankfully, I can say Surviving is easily their best album since 2004’s Futures. “Surviving,” “All the Way (Stay),” “Diamond,” and “Criminal Energy” exude the feel-good optimism of their best work, with the latter opening with a two-hand tapping lead (something I never expected in a Jimmy song) over big, chunky chords, while “Delivery,” “Recommit,” and album closer “Congratulations” recall the melancholic, pining vibes of their classic late’90s/early-’00s output. Definitely a strong return to form for the kings of third-wave emo. - Jonathan Gluff

KIM GORDON No Home Record Matador For three decades, Kim Gordon was an integral part of legendary rock band Sonic Youth. Playing bass and singing her artsy spoken word poetry over the chaos of her band’s dueling lead dissonant guitars, Gordon established herself as an art-punk God. Now, years after the band dissolved from the fallout of her divorce with SY frontman Thurston Moore, the 66-year-old delivers her firstever solo album. And it sounds nothing like anything she’s ever done. No Home Record finds the experimentalist dabbling in electronic production that creates an almost industrial sound. If you are a fan of Sonic Youth, this album won’t sound quite like that. No Home Record is undeniably Kim Gordon at her best and well worth your time.- Russ Finn

ANGEL OLSEN All Mirrors Jagjaguwar The 2010s have been ruled by Angel Olsen. The St. Louis native has released four studio albums this decade, each one great - and each one better than the last. Starting with folk and rock albums, Olsen's sound has evolved into the lush pop of All Mirrors. Her songwriting has remained consistently spectacular across all her work, but her continued sonic evolution is what makes All Mirrors her best release yet. It’s loaded with orchestral strings on nearly every track which creates an atmosphere reminiscent of 1960s pop music, yet her style is her own and sounds entirely fresh and modern. All Mirrors is what should be celebrated and played on pop radio more than a lot of music. I’d implore anyone who likes pop music to dive into Angel Olsen’s catalogue; I am certain you’ll like what you hear. - Russ Finn

MARK KOZELEK WITH PETRA HADEN Joey Always Smiled Caldo Verde Mark Kozelek keeps moving forward. Ever since he released 2014's Benji with his band Sun Kil Moon, Kozelek has worked with a style of deeply personal, confessional, journalistic songwriting that oftentimes features extremely unconventional song structures. His new album with Petra Haden finds the middle-aged songwriter buckling down on his style. Songs are often quite long - Joey Always Smiled opens with a 17 minute song and includes an even longer piece further on. Listening to a Kozelek album is like listening to a musical podcast in which a grouchy man reads his diary over piano and acoustic guitar. His writing has gotten increasingly meta as he references his older material throughout the seven songs here. Though arguably inaccessible, fans of Kozelek should happily be able to put Joey Always Smiled on and get lost for an hour in an album full of great storytelling. - Russ Finn

Blues with Bragin SCREAMIN' JOHN & TD LIND Mr. Little Big Man Down in the Alley Records Screamin’ John & TD Lind - a reunion of members of the band Edenstreet - rip it up on Mr. Little Big Man. Opening track “Rollin’ Joanna" begins with a piano that sounds like something from a saloon in the Wild West before shifting into a more traditional blues song that remains familiar. The heavy guitar and bass throughout the B.B. King song “The Letter” match the lyrics about the inability to write down the deep thoughts in your mind. Joel Pinkerton’s harmonica also adds a nice touch. The heavy bass and guitar continue in “Shame, Shame, Shame” but also maintain a funky element. A cover of the Taj Mahal song “Jelly Roll” seems to provide a nice outlet for all of the band members to shine. Joel Pinkerton’s harmonica on “Little Big Man” provides a nice accompaniment to the toe-tapping tune. The Magic Sam song “All Your Love” features melancholy lyrics about wanting a woman to return with the music offering an equal amount of depth. The brighter song “Way Past Midnight” provides a great beat for dancing and lyrics about partying into the early hours of the morning. The country influenced ballad “Cold Stone and Emptiness” offers solace for anyone going through a difficult situation. - Paul Bragin

BLUES MEETS GIRL Blues Meets Girl Bad Inglish Records Blues Meets Girl showcases the talents of a duo known simply as Mr. Downchild and Kasimira. Opening track “Nightgown" features Mr. Downchild’s harmonica coming in early to set the tone. It deals with a man and woman who wonder when they will meet again. Kasimira’s sultry vocals on “Listen Up Boys” match the lyrics about men who lost their chance to be with her. “Didn’t See It Coming” boasts a solid blues groove while also sprinkling in elements of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll. The jangly acoustic guitar and harmonica on “Backstabber” offer a nice change of pace and seem reminiscent of Delta blues from the early 20th century. “Snapshot” features a background track eerily similar to Howlin’ Wolf’s classic “Smokestack Lightning” and Kasimira’s lyrics eventually mention the late legend. The Latin influenced “Home to My Baby” features a nice drum track. The instrumental song “Swingin’ With Hank” features a jazzy bass line from Ray Deforest. “Fishing Blues” features excellent guitar and harmonica playing while Kasimira sings about the joy of sitting on a river bank with a pole in hand. The harmonica, bluesy vocal and double entendre lyrics on “I’m Your Handyman” allow the duo's many talents to shine at once. - Paul Bragin

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

For some reason, too many stouts don’t taste great in a bottle, even ones that are otherwise good on tap. (I’m looking at you, Guinness.) But this offering from Triton bucks that trend. It’s strong but smooth, with a bit of nuttiness up front and a flourish of dark chocolate on the back of the palate, followed by a very clean finish. Stout lovers, be sure to not miss out on this one from one of Indiana’s own brewers.

A thick tan head crowns this stout when poured in a traditional English pub glass. A nice balance of roasted malt and toffee notes round out the scent profile. The roasted malt and coffee flavors remain when sipping the beer, followed by a hint of sweetness and more roasted malt in the finish. Pair it with a variety of foods like steak, barbecue, French onion soup, chili, pumpkin pie or chocolate cake.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is your average looking dark stout. I can smell the coffee right away. I like the sweet malts and coffee flavor. It tastes like a Guinness to me but a little better. I consider this beer on the lighter side of the stout spectrum. It doesn’t coat your tongue like other stouts do.

74 | NOVEMBER 2019

Full disclosure: I’ve never liked sangria, and even less one pretending to be beer. But I will say that as far as that style of drink goes, you can certainly do worse than this. I picked up strong notes of apple and lime, a hint of pomegranate, and what seems to be a touch of cherry, too. The label mentions blueberry, but besides some tartness (which could easily be the lime), I didn’t really catch any. It is what it is, which isn’t my thing.

BOULEVARD TECH N9NE BOU LOU

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.75

There’s almost always something from Boulevard Brewing in my fridge - they’re truly some of my favorite beers. And their pineapple and coconut-infused collaboration with rapper (and fellow Kansas City native) Tech N9ne is definitely a well-crafted beer, even if it isn’t for everyone. Thankfully, neither of those flavors are particularly strong, serving more to compliment the natural flavors of a wheat beer while also imparting a nice creaminess to the texture. It’s one you certainly won’t mistake for any other.

A thin head forms and quickly disappears from this beer. The deep red color gives an appearance similar to wine. A burst of fruit notes fill the nose. Sour lime notes hit the tongue first, followed by pomegranate, then apple in the finish. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months. Pair it with your favorite breakfast, especially sweet and fruity dishes or a fruit pie for dessert.

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a purple beverage and not really beer in my book. It has a slight apple flavor and a little blueberry. The main flavors of this beverage are the pomegranate and the lime. This is a very tart beverage and I don’t like to flinch when drinking stuff.

A thick white head rests on this beer when poured in a wheat beer glass and stays for a long time. Generous amounts of pineapple and coconut scent replace the normal wheat smell. The coconut and pineapple flavors remain with the first sip of the beer and stay during the finish. Pair it with Thai ginger chicken or add it to your favorite recipe for pineapple upside-down cake or coconut cake for an extra kick.

This is a cloudy golden beer and I can smell the pineapple as soon as I pour it. I enjoy the coconut flavor. Some beers say they taste like pineapple but they are just an IPA. This beer is totally different but I like it. It's not a session beer but after mowing the grass, this one would be nice and refreshing.

TRITON BARN PHANTOM GOSE CITRUS

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

Here's another offering from Indian's own Triton Brewing Company. This beer has enough promise to it that I have to try the non-citrus version of it now. With a light

lemony bite on the front of the palate and a slight saltiness on the back, I have a suspicion this might be the perfect tequila chaser. Either way, it’s a refreshing beer with that trademark gose bready/nutty finish.

salt used during brewing comes through in the finish. Pair it with seafood, or use it as an ingredient in chicken piccata, lemon squares or lemon meringue pie.

PAUL BRAGIN - 2.5

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I'm not a big fan of lime and salt added to my beer. It's a little hard to drink. It does have a little coriander which is ok. If I want a lime, I'll put it in my beer myself. Not a fan.

A thick white head tops this hazy golden beer after pouring it in a pilsner glass. The scent contains a significant amount of lemon. Tart citrus flavors hit the tongue and cause the cheeks to pucker when first drinking the beer. Some salty flavor from the Himalayan pink

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
