Happy New Year, everyone! 2023 is the place to be. Well, we don't really have a choice but it can't be any worse than 2022, right? To be honest, I've already forgotten most of last year - old age tends to cloud the mind, after all. Probably for the best, though. Thanks to my brain drain I've got a clean slate and I'm ready to K some A over the next 12 months - or at least stay out of jail. That should always be one's primary objective. Otherwise, you could end up in the back of this magazine, prominently displayed on a mug shots page. Personally, I don't have an appetite for destruction (G 'N R shout-out)

and neither should you; instead, we should all be hungry - and thirsty - for delicious food and drinks at the tri-state's favorite bars. Admittedly, that wasn't one of my better transitions, but nonetheless, it leads me to this month's cover story... We've got the top area hotspots to enjoy a frosty adult beverage - beer, in case that wasn't clear - along with good eats. Check out our handy guide and then head out to all 20 establishments. Not in the same night, mind you - I'm talking over the course of the month or even year. In fact, make it your 2023 resolution to check off every place on our list. It's not like you have

anything else better to do. Well, there are some pretty good concerts on tap in January, including country music's Old Dominion at the Ford Center and singer-songwriter Jason Isbell at the Victory Theatre. And for the younger folks, especially, the legendary Harlem Globetrotters return to Evansville to spread joy and goodwill. FYI, we've got an interview with forward Zeus McClurkin as well as Old Dominion special guest Frank Ray and Winter Jam headliner Jeremy Camp - the latter serving as a primer for the annual Christian music festival in February. Well, the votes are in - and just in time for the New Year. We asked our readers to weighin online at news4u.me and tell us their favorite places to enjoy a cold one (translation: beer) in the tri-state and now we're pleased to present the top 20. As it turned out, the margins were razor-thin. In other words - and we hate to use such a tired cliché - everyone's a winner, really. Even the honorable mentions that we've listed at the end of this guide, many of which missed out by just a few votes. The lesson learned here is that no matter where you look, there's a bounty of great establishments to patronize, each one with its own unique vibe. So check out where our readers like to kick back with a cold one and see if the list meets your approval. Lord knows we could all use a drink right about now!

With 50 beers on tap, this west side restaurant has long been a favorite of area bar goers and fans of classic German entrees such as Wiener Schnitzel, Corned Beef & Cabbage and Bratwurst. For over 20 years, in fact. (FYI, Gerst offers American cuisine, too.) Most importantly, the authentic beer hall atmosphere makes it an undeniably great place to enjoy a cold one - preferably in one of their signature fishbowls.

BUD'S ROCKIN' COUNTRY BAR & GRILL

Are you down with Nashville? Then you need to stop in at this hugely popular west side bar that features some of the region's best country artists performing live. It also happens to be one of the coolest looking establishments in town with a long, beautifully-constructed bar where you can enjoy a beer in style. Plus, the menu here is next level, with both delicious comfort foods and creative entrees.

Well known for its scratch comfort foods, juicy steaks and its impressive array of beers and cocktails, this beloved north side restaurant is a great place to come hang out on the weekends for live music and karaoke. The newly-designed and extended bar side allows for more room to grab a table, grab a bite and enjoy a cold beer with your friends. With a "Cheers"-like atmosphere and 31 flavors on tap, there's something for every palate. Combined with their award-winning wings and appetizers, it's a sure hit.

Haynie's Corner in downtown Evansville simply wouldn't be the same without this spacious, arts-friendly bar where you can catch the area's best bands on Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy Sunday jazz performances, karaoke and poetry nights and live painting on stage. Plus, there's two patios primed for beer drinking and more, lunch and dinner specials and Bokeh's irresistible weekend brunch.

It's hard to think of Leroy's - family-owned for 52 years, mind you - without thinking of their famous pizzas. And über-fun weekend karaoke. Just two things they do exceptionally well. A little west of the big Franklin Street strip, this homey tavern is one of the friendliest spots in town - a great place to chill with a Busch Light or Mich Ultra. Try their pizza for sure, but also check out their classic sandwiches.

A Franklin Street tradition - and long-running college hangout - Sportsman's has that familiar feel you look for in a bar, a place where you can count on getting a shout from the staff when you walk in. And true to its name, the pool action is on-point. Then there's the daily drink and food specials - tenderloin, ribeye sandwiches, catfish baskets and more - that make this west side joint a treasure.

DOC'S SPORTS BAR

There's no sports atmosphere like Doc's in town. No matter who your team is, or what your sport is, the game is on at Doc's and everyone is rooting with you. From May to October, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to grab a cold one in the tri-state. The area's only outdoor bar is situated right along the Ohio River with a scenic view of downtown Evansville. Add in incredible live music - including big-time country, rap and rock acts - and a nightclub in the back soundtracked by professional DJs, and you know where to go during the summer months.

O'BRIAN'S SPORTS BAR & GRILL

New and improved since re-opening as a non-smoking bar, O'Brian's has attracted even more diehard sports fans to its location on one of the city's main strips. Yet some things remain the same, thankfully - i.e., the food still rocks (Bacon BBQ Cheddar Burger, anyone?) and the drink specials still rule, especially the Busch Light mugs. Come for the sports action on the big screens, stay for pool and karaoke.

Consistently serving up some of the area's best cracker crust pizza for over 30 years, Kipplee's has carved out a special place in the Evansville community. The cozy atmosphere of the bar and classic wooden booths make for an ideal environment to enjoy a cold one while watching sports on their numerous big screens. But that's just the bar area - there's also a roomy family area for parties and more!

Attention craft beer lovers: Damsel is the place to be. This west side hangout - just a short jaunt from the Franklin Street strip - features a slew of homemade brews as well as preferred domestic selections for the less adventurous drinker. And lately, it's become a haven for live music, featuring punk and metal acts and more in the upstairs room. Damsel is doing things a little different, alright.

Ask any foodie what place comes to mind when they think of tri-state pizza, and Turoni's is almost always mentioned among the very best. Now celebrating 60 years - that's six decades, folks - cooking up some of the finest crisp crust pizza around, you can always count on a great dining experience. Plus, there's a full bar at all locations and a fun, family- friendly atmosphere that you simply can't bottle.

Forward Zeus McClurkin on the importance of the Globetrotters, getting high fives from kids and more

Every January, the Harlem Globetrotters roll into town to light up the Ford Center with a sea of beaming, awe-struck faces both young and old. Like clockwork. Boasting an incredibly long history that stretches all the way back to 1926, the team's legacy of goodwill quite simply astounds. From day one, the Globetrotters have been about so much more than just basketball, championing character and sportsmanship above all. But make no mistake, every squad member, male or female, is a prime-time entertainer, so bring the whole family for a fun night out when the Globetrotters take the floor on January 16.

Forward Zeus McClurkin kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the big game.

With all the madness going on in the world, it seems we need the Globetrotters now more than ever.

Definitely. I’ve always admired how people can bring their families to our games – we’re entertainment for every age group. They can all come and just leave their problems at the arena doors and for that next two hours we have a captivated audience that just wants to have a good time and smile with us. It’s like no other sporting event anywhere because you know your home team is going to win at the end of our game.

Has being a Globetrotter stacked up to your expectations?

It's completely met my expectations and

then exceeded them. Before becoming a Globetrotter, I was a Washington General. That was a tough year for me – I lost a lot of games, more than I did my entire basketball career. So the sky was the limit – anything was an improvement after that year. After dunking on the Globetrotters so many times, I finally made the squad and man, the grass is definitely greener on this side of the fence. I’ve been to so many different countries, which is incredible. And I now get high fives instead of kids faking me out and not giving high fives – that’s a big change (laughs). I’ve gone from moral victories to actual victories.

I couldn’t help but notice in your bio that you are unable to beat your older brother in a game of one-on-one. What gives?

Are you familiar with the term “grown man strength?” Physically, I can bench press more

than my brother; I can squat more; I can jump higher – but there’s some sort of level that he is able to reach that I have not yet tapped into, and he will not let me beat him. The late Kobe [Bryant] had a famous quote: “If you weren’t born when I started playing, then you can’t talk trash to me.” I think it’s just the mental edge that an older brother has.

How excited are you about coming to Evansville?

We love playing in Evansville – the basketball atmosphere there is crazy. I can remember back when I was in college, we played against the Purple Aces and they beat us, but it was a lively game, and I like that about you guys.

"NO BAD VIBES" TOUR

When it comes to contemporary country music, Nashville's Old Dominion leads the pack, combining elements of pop, rock and even a little hip hop to balance out the band's southern twang. It's a fresh mix of styles that's produced a run of hit singles, including "Break Up with Him," "Snapback," "No Such Thing as a Broken Heart," "Make It Sweet" and "I Was on a Boat That Day" - the latter serving as the lead single from Time, Tequila and Therapy, the group's 2021 top five album. Currently, the guys are prepping for a headlining tour that starts right here in Evansville and winds its way across North America over the next five months.

But Old Dominion won't be going it alone; in addition to Kassi Ashton and Greylan James, they're bringing along former police officer Frank Ray whose breakthrough song, 2021's "Country'd Look Good on You," announced a fresh new voice

in country music. A New Mexico native, Ray made it a point to highlight his Hispanic heritage and influences on Getcha Some, his debut EP, which infuses elements of salsa, mariachi and more to create a multi-cultural sound previously unheard in Nashville.

Ray kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Ford Center.

With the success of "Country'd Look Good on You" did you feel that the time was right for a multicultural artist in Nashville?

People in this community haven't really had an artist to lean on to write that kind of style, to take that kind of stylistic approach in songwriting. You know, country music has been largely dominated by Caucasians - it's not even bad, right? It's just the timing has been off - there hasn't been a Hispanic artist that's emerged in the genre for a really

long time. And so I think there was this sort of yearning for people to want to write something in that aspect but [they] didn't have the artist to write it with - who knows, they'd probably been sitting on titles for years. It was exciting for me that people were wanting to write stuff like that because I understand that very well. But had I never come to Nashville and started doing that I would never have thought to throw my Hispanic element into country music because I just felt like the consumer or the industry didn't want it, you know what I mean?

While you co-wrote most of the tracks on Getcha Some, "Country'd Look Good on You" - a total earworm - is by outside writers. How did it end up on your radar?

It was presented to me by a couple buddies - Monty Criswell, in particular, is the one that actually sent it to me. But he wrote it with Derek George. And Monty and Derek have both been big songwriters here in Nashville for quite some time. Monty was on the big Scotty McCreery song "Five More Minutes"; he wrote "I Saw God Today" for George Strait. Derek has been a big producer - produced Randy Houser, Trace Adkins. That just gives you some background and shows you that these guys know what they're doing. And I was just fortunate enough to

become friends with them and we had written a bunch of songs together. But when it came time to get the project together, they knew I was open to some outside songs. So Monty just on a whim texted it [the song] to me and said this is right down your lane. At that time he knew me very well because we'd established this great relationship, so, sure enough, for the same reason that you mentioned earlier, I listened to the song and I couldn't help but...it was an earworm; I was singing it myself all day long. When that chorus hits, you're like, that's a hit.

Yet "Streetlights" - a very Latin-influenced track with a salsa beat and heavy brass - was put out as the first single.

Yeah, that was like a soft introduction into the mainstream country world and "Streetlights" was just something to put out there to say, hey, just so you know, there's this new kid on the block. And I say "kid" lightly [laughs]. There's this new kid on the block named Frank Ray and he's Hispanic and we're just letting you know right out of the gate that no one else in Nashville sounds like this. Nobody else in country music has got something that sounds like this. It was a soft introduction but it also put people that had their finger on the pulse on notice: This is what we're coming with, you know?

"Y'all Showed Up" is the EP's party-starter - the perfect concert opener.

It's been the opening track for the last couple months of our shows. We're still fine-tuning some things which is really cool but it's definitely the song that we start out with; it's a party song and definitely something that gets everyone's attention. It's a bop, as the kids say. And it's sort of the story of my life, too. It's just like, every now and then I tell my wife that I'm going to go out for a beer and she's like, 'Mmm hmmm, sure' - because, you know, you get there and you run into someone that you haven't seen in awhile and

it's one of those things where I was just about to leave but y'all showed up.

And I assume now that you're no longer on the force you can let loose a bit more when you go out.

Yeah, yeah, there was a time there where it wasn't as easy. I was playing all the honkytonks around New Mexico and there would always be some people that I had arrested in the bar and...that's also how I knew we were onto something good because rather than, you know, want to get in a fight when these people saw me onstage - they definitely recognized me - after, like, we'd take a break or something like that, they'd meet me at the bar and they'd buy me a shot of tequila. It was like, ok, this means the music is making an impact if somebody that I've arrested doesn't want to kick my ass [laughs].

The very first time you played the Grand Ole Opry you received a standing ovation - a sure sign that your unique sound has been embraced by Nashville.

Actually, this last Saturday I went back to the Opry for the sixth time - that was December 3rd. It was the first time that I didn't have overwhelming cottonmouth from nerves - you know what I mean? I don't know what it was but I felt calm; [On my debut] I was pacing back and forth; I was slamming water to no end to where I was peeing every two seconds [laughs]. As they called my name and I was walking out onstage, I kind of chugged [water] behind the curtain and walked out and I still got cottonmouth - was still a nervous wreck. But the response...the crowd, the standing ovation - it's a rare thing when it happens and it happens like that? On my debut? I couldn't have scripted it out any better.

First making his mark as a member of the Georgia-based DriveBy Truckers, Jason Isbell made the decision to go it alone in 2007, quickly producing his debut solo effort, Sirens of the Ditch. Described as a more "bluesy pop sound" that softened the harder edges of his former DBT work, the album paved the way for the folk rock approach of its follow-up, 2009's Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. This sophomore release was the first to feature Isbell's backing band which would become an integral part of his live presentation.

After 2011's Here We Rest, Isbell's career caught fire with the release of 2013's Southeastern. The post-rehab collection of songs entered the Billboard top 30 and made Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Tracks such as "Cover Me Up" and "Elephant" struck a chord with Americana music fans hungry for an authentic voice. Seizing the moment, Isbell went back into the studio and emerged with 2015's Something More Than Free which received the GRAMMY Award for Best Americana Album. As a result of the album's success, the highly-anticipated follow-up, 2017's The Nashville Sound, debuted at number four while 2020's Reunions also landed inside the top 10.

2021 saw Isbell take a welcome left turn for the covers album Georgia Blue, a charity album featuring songs by Georgia artists such as R.E.M., Drivin' 'n' Cryin' and The Allman Brothers Band. You'll hear songs from this critically-acclaimed release and more at the show.

Honored as Billboard's #2 Christian artist of the decade in 2010, Jeremy Camp remains every

bit as relevant today, his continued success propelled by the release of two highly-acclaimed albums over the last few years, The Story's Not Over and When You Speak - the former featuring the Imagine Dragons-esque monster single "Dead Man Walking" while the latter is driven by the bouncy title track and inspirational "Getting Started." Both collections prove that the Indiana native has stayed true blue in his mission to spread the word of God in song while wrapping his heartfelt message up in an increasingly contemporary soundscape that appeals to a wide range of music fans.

Remarkably, it's been 20 years since Camp's historic major label debut Stay signaled the

arrival of a bright young talent on the scene (the album spawned six number one hits). And while much adversity followed, including the sad passing of his first wife and battles with anxiety and depression, he's persevered and grown stronger, buoyed by his devoted following. To paraphrase the title of Camp's aforementioned 2019 release, the story's far from over; the soon-to-be 45-year-old singer is truly just getting started with so much more to say and to accomplish.

It's been 20 years since your major label debut. What's your takeaway when you look back on two decades in the music industry?

and downs and a lot of lessons learned. When I first started I was very much wide-eyed and ready to conquer the world and I think my heart was ready to tell people about Jesus and what he'd done in my life. And then what happens is that sometimes you just get distracted. I remember a few years in, like, I was so busy and people were putting so much pressure [on me] about striking while the iron was hot that pretty soon you're like, what am I doing this for? And who am I doing this for? So, I've had those moments where I've had to stop and God really stops me and just says, hey, re-focus. If you want an overview, it's that I've learned to listen to the voice of the Lord and not of man, because you can get very easily distracted.

Yeah, pretty much you're going to find, if you rewind and watch how I wrote it, you're going to find me on an acoustic guitar [laughs] - I still do that. And even live, I'm starting to bring back a lot more of these moments where I'm sitting down with [an] acoustic [guitar] and just having these storyteller moments without all this production and stuff going on. This tour we do that in a really sweet moment sharing a bunch of old songs and sharing stories and it's really made it really sweet.

"Dead Man Walking" is just a monster of a song - in the best way possible - with its huge drums and anthemic chorus. What was the genesis of that track? It's funny you said that... talking about how things [songs get] started. That was struck from an idea of wanting to use that phrase, understanding that basically, before you give your life to Christ, you're like a dead man walkingyou don't have a true life. That concept came in. But we were messing around with a beat - that beat that you hear [mimics beat from the song]. And that's how it started. Then the guitar, that little [mimics opening guitar line]...we started doing the guitar riff over it [the beat] and that's how that started. But it was a drumbeat [that inspired the song]- isn't that interesting?

If any song of yours was going to cross over to the pop charts, that was the one.

When I first started we had a bunch of opportunities and things that were like, always on the edge of getting to cross over - and of course, I'm like, cool. I'm never going to compromise, but if that happens, cool. I think I've just let it be to the point where it's just got to happen, you know, naturally. I mean, I'm not saying you can't push things - but it's just not been something that we felt like we wanted to push. So, I appreciate you saying that; it means a lot for you to say that because I do feel like it's a super strong song. Live, it's a song that literally goes off - insane.

In the song "No Rain" off When You Speak, you sing "I found heaven when I went through hell" - which, on the surface, seems like a contradiction. For people that question why we must suffer to get to glory, what do you say?

Listen, the scriptures that I constantly talk about - the rain fell upon the just and the unjust. For some reason, there are things that we're not ever going to understand. But I think this is what you have to step back and realize - is that God does care about every single thing that is going on and there is reason why He does what He does. Even though it might not make sense, I think that you have to first go, I'm loved; He loves me so much. Then if you know that, you can trust Him with the outcome. Even if the outcome is not great. That's the point where faith comes in and trusting God whose ways are higher than our ways. Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. It doesn't make sense sometimes, but it doesn't mean God doesn't love us or care for us.

BATTLE BAKERS

LOCAL CAKE DESIGNERS FRONSHEA HILLMAN AND BRANDI NEAL RECENTLY COMPETED ON THE FOOD NETWORK'S MOST POPULAR NEW SHOW

The offer was entirely unexpected. It was back in 2021 and Cakes By Shea owner Fronshea Hillman had received a very intriguing message from the Food Network. Unbeknownst to her, the popular cooking channel had tracked the talented Evansville baker down, coming across her name in online stories about the annual Aurora Gingerbread House Fundraiser, a tri-state charity event benefitting the homeless. The network was planning its own gingerbread design competition and invited Hillman to interview for the proposed TV series. But it was not quite to be - close but no cigar as she failed to make the final cut. So season one of Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown went on without Hillman; however, the show's success opened the door for another golden opportunity.

A year later, Hillman again received an invitation to participate in the fledging series. And this time, she made the most of it, booking her spot on the second season of the Food Network's most promising new venture. But Hillman needed a partner for the team-based competition. Rather than roll the dice with a network-appointed baker, she reached out

to Brandi Neal, owner of Bombshell Bakes in Evansville. Neal, it just so happened, was engaged to Hillman's brother-in-law so the connection went beyond prowess in the kitchen. Long story short, they made a good match and together, this dynamite duo faced off against two other pairs of hopeful competitors during the second week of September 2022 as filming for the fourth episode of season two took place in Knoxville, Tennessee.

But it wasn't exactly easy-going. The three teams were first tasked with constructing a 4x4 ft. holiday parade structure out of gingerbread - the more unique the better. Hillman, having seen a Hallmark ornament that featured a hot air balloon, decided to go big or go home, nearly pulling off a gravity-defying scene with the help of Neal. Unfortunately, their intricate design100% edible - collapsed in the final moments of the competition. Still, the two received kudos for their bold and valiant effort. Not only that, Neal would go on to claim victory in the next baking

challenge, creating a crownie (cookie and brownie combo) topped with toffee bits and covered in a caramel glaze. For the win, the pair was awarded $1000 worth of kitchenware but ultimately fell short of the big $10,000 prize.

Still, according to Hillman, the experience was invaluable. For starters, she was deemed a "Gingerbread Master" by the Food Network Judges which served as immeasurable validation. In addition, after the show aired in late November, she received much support from the local community - people routinely stopped her out in public and offered kind words. As she notes, "It was heartwarming and inspiring." Now Hillman's gone full-time with her baking business which gives her no end of satisfaction. "My biggest joy is making people happy with my edible art."

After driving by Lin’s numerous times, I finally decided to try it out, and I’m upset that I didn’t go sooner! Since my first experience about two months ago, I have been back weekly because it's just that good. I would also like to mention that this place is carry-out only now as they haven’t opened the seating back up since the pandemic. But they are very diligent in taking orders quickly as you walk in, and they can get the food to you in under 10 minutes.

On the food side, I have tried numerous things on their menu. The one constant for me is their Crab Rangoon. This appetizer is just stunning. They are nice and plump while still having a beautiful golden-fried exterior. I would put these up as one of my favorite Crab Rangoons I’ve ever had in my life. Make these a must when you try them out and enjoy!

I have also tried the Chicken Lo Mein, General Tso’s Chicken, and their Sweet and Sour Chicken. All these dishes come with fried rice, cooked to perfection and perfect for soaking up all the sauces that go on the chicken - which is just jaw-dropping. As I mentioned before, I go here quite frequently, and I have yet to be served a dry or chewy piece of chicken. I would also like to note that their sauces aren’t very spicy; even the General Tso’s dish is light on the heat. So, if you want something to burn your mouth, maybe ask for that specifically.

Last thing: Lin’s also does Hibachi meals that I haven’t tried, but I have no doubt they are just as delicious as the other entrees. So, if the Japanese Hibachi is

what sounds better to you, try it out and then let me know what you think because I’m stuck on getting Chinese currently!

Start off a new year of clean eating with this super simple sardine salad. While this might not look super appetizing, this salad is full of omega3s, vitamin D, protein, and fiber. Don't turn your nose up until you have actually tried it! This salad is delicious by itself or topping a low glycemic cracker (like Simple Mills brand almond flour crackers). It would be as equally good on a piece of toasted homemade sourdough bread.

SARDINE SALAD (1 SERVING)

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 CAN OF WILD CAUGHT SARDINES IN OLIVE OIL

• 1 T. OF AVOCADO BASED MAYONNAISE

• 3-4 DICED PICKLES (NO DYES OR ADDED SUGAR – ORGANIC MT. OLIVE IS A GREAT BRAND)

• 1-2 DICED ROASTED RED PEPPERS

• 3-4 DICED BABY CARROTS

DIRECTIONS:

1. OPEN YOUR CAN AND POUR THE WHOLE CAN OF SARDINES INTO A SMALL BOWL. (THE OLIVE OIL HAS GREAT ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT.)

2. USING A FORK, BREAK UP THE SARDINES INTO SMALLER PIECES AND COMBINE WITH THE OLIVE OIL.

3. ADD 1 T. OF MAYONNAISE.

4. ADD THE DICED PICKLES, ROASTED RED PEPPERS, AND BABY CARROTS.

5. ADD SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE.

If you thought you knew Kenna Elpers, think again. After wowing the tri-state for a good five years with powerful performances and increasingly developed songwriting, the Cynthiana native relocated to the Nashville area to be close to the action and quickly set about establishing herself as a promising new talent in Music City. featuring an empowering, defiant chorus that speaks to Elpers' maturity and growing confidence: "Boy you thought you knew me/ But you shoulda known better than to lose me/ Guess you'll never get her/ She's got my smile, my eyes/ Now they're just a little more wide, more bright, and a little bigger/ If you ever thought you knew me/ I could introduce you to the new me."

But it's the lead-up to this starmaking chorus that really hits home as Elpers truly gets to the heart of the matter, letting her guard down without sacrificing an ounce of pride: "I finally got to see who I could be when I'm free of you/ Those misty blues kept me from seeing the truth."

It's the sort of brutal honesty that country music listeners love with a sentiment that most any person can relate to - especially when it's sung with such authenticity.

More than anything, "New Me" finds Elpers in supreme voice; her rapidly advancing vocal control is apparent and on-point from the first line of the song.

And the timing for this monumental single couldn't be better - it's a new year and "New Me" is set to put Nashville on notice that Kenna Elpers is a force to be reckoned with in country music. Stay tuned...

Musically speaking, Kyle Paisley laid a bit low this last year after releasing a slew of singles throughout 2021, including the breezy summer jam "Just Friends." Not to say he went MIA or anything - but studio work took a backseat for awhile as the accomplished guitarist and singersongwriter contemplated his next move - which, as we now know, led to "Running

on Empty," an exciting collaboration with Stephen Horning of Big Ninja Delight at The Dojo Recording. An 80s-influenced slice of funk-pop set to a mid-tempo groove, the new single proves that Paisley hasn't lost a step as he serves up another helping of melodic bliss.

With a mushrooming, ascending synth intro that recalls the best of Toto, "Running on Empty" dials back to 1982 before the keyboard progression gives way to Paisley's signature guitar; he's playing the same four chords but the shift in instrumentation completely changes the dynamics and lays the groundwork for his lovelorn lyrics: "Can't stop believin' you still got feelings/ You're so in love but you won't let it show." As the synths re-emerge, slowly fading back in to add a touch of melancholy, Paisley puts it all on the line: "I know deep down you miss that lovin' in your life/ Sometimes they say it's better 'round the second try." And just in case there's any doubt left about his intentions, he issues a direct plea as the guitar takes

Later, as the song develops, Horning sweetens the production with more synth flourishes and Paisley pops his bass with abandon, driving the track forward as it crescendos via an extended, tastefully executed guitar solo that only hastens the exhilarating ascension. Here, the chemistry between the two musicians really peaks. Perhaps what's most impressive is that "Running on Empty" deftly pulls off the trick of pairing a tale of heartbreak with a joyous melody - albeit one that's underpinned with sadness. Clearly, this is not destined to be a oneand-done collaboration; there's too much promise and too much musical ground for Paisley and Horning left to cover. Here's hoping we hear more from these two local talents in 2023.

Evansville's funk-pop rocker is back with the 80s-influenced "Running on Empty"

THE ALPHA INCIDENT

Ambitious projects require patience. And no band in the tri-state knows this better than The Alpha Incident, a 5-man prog metal outfit with big conceptual ideas that take time to develop and manifest. Case in point, the band's first two releases - 2016's Odyssey and 2018's Convergence - were intensely labored over; but the end clearly justified the means as both proved to be stellar examples of how to create complex music without exhausting the listener. While the songs were often long and involved, they still totally rocked; they even contained hooks despite the intricate structures and challenging, intellectual lyrics.

Which leads us to AI's finest moment to date: Sundowner , a remarkable album that we previewed back in August. At the time, the band - vocalist Mike Morrow, guitarists Daniel Wade and Patrick Casey, bassist Ellery Cochrane

and drummer Thomas Van Bibber - was prepping the release of the title track, a teaser of sorts for the planned threepart musical and visual project. It was a heck of an introduction, to put it mildly.

As we noted in our August breakdown of this first taste of Sundowner , "in the span of the opening [song], there's mournful piano, melodic, staccato guitar, a wall of distortion, machine-gun riffing and frenetic drumming - not to mention several time signature shifts."

It's truly progressive, in other words. And to reaffirm the vocal talents of Morrow, who's become one of the area's most versatile frontmen, his performance on the title track and the project's subsequent two parts, "Liminal/Subliminal" and "Dreameater," is nothing short of inspiring as he pulls out all the stops - whispers, screams, melodic crooning - to convey the emotions of the unpredictable soundtrack.

To come full circle, it's been a long wait for the finished product, but well worth it. The Alpha Incident will celebrate the release of Sundowner on January 14 at Lamasco on Evansville's west side, supported by Heir to the Crown, Solemnly Swear and Jonah & The Well. This is a metal show not to be missed. Hearing AI play these ambitious tracks off the new album in a small bar is what live music is all about - and the opening acts will tear your face off. In the best way possible, of course.

Seeing stars: the tri-state's "alternative outlaw" puts it all together on euphoric new single, "Hallucinate"

With each new release, southern Illinois rocker Cage Willis keeps upping his game. His previous singles - the emphatic "Who I Am" and heartfelt "Home To You," both recorded with the assistance of Black Stone Cherry guitarist Chris Robertson - were more than radio ready, thanks to the solid songwriting and production. Not to mention Willis' bluesy baritone vocals that recall the singer's idol, Gary Clark Jr. But the "alternative outlaw," as he's known, has truly put it all together on "Hallucinate," the massive new single released last month. It seems no overdub was spared on this euphoric track; it's a veritable wall of sound, fleshed out with layers of searing guitars and propelled by booming drums in full attack mode. Over top, Willis passionately opines about a woman so magnificent, who's such a vision, that he simply can't see straight - something he makes clear from the getgo: "Pocket full of honey and I'm ready to go/ I ain't got no money but I'm letting you know/ That I'ma love you like a fool, breathe you in till I hallucinate."

Hooks abound throughout; in fact, there are potential songs within the song. Each section stands on its own, each pushing the track forward to the massive chorus - the sort of payoff that makes for repeated listening. Here Willis wails with such vulnerability, it's electric: "I hallucinate when you call my name/ Got stars in my eyes and they don't fade when you come my way." He may be seeing stars, but his vocals are the star of the show on this incredible new single. Be sure to check it out!

Zion Albert

Last October we previewed Zion Albert's uplifting Inna Miami Town EP, a 5-track collection of inspiring reggae anthems, including such timely offerings as "Universal Peace" and "All That I Need" which spoke to both the state of the world and the individual yearning for fulfillment. Just a few months later, the prolific, multi-talented tri-state artist is back with the full-length Higher Vibrations, pairing the previous EP with a selection of new tracks and prior singles such as the hopeful "Try Jah Love" and romantic "Love at First Sight." Zion generously packs this latest collection with 15 songs - the pinnacle of which may well be the spine-tingling "Choices In My Life" featuring local songstress/vocal wonder, Cynthia Murray. Seamlessly, their two voices, though wholly disparate in tone, both come together and play off of each other, delivering simple yet profound lyrics that touch the soul: "I've made up my mind to search for happiness/ And I know sometimes it really, really hurts/ 'Cause it's so hard to walk away/ But I'm hoping for one day I will find/ What I've been searching for."

Other highlights include the dark, probing "Bio Engineering" addressing chemical warfare and the blunt "Fake Friends Will Use You," a warning shot to those who trust too much in others. But Zion closes Higher Vibrations out with the previously released "Jah Holy Foundation," a feel-good jam that leaves this impressive collection on a definite high note heading into 2023.

Associate professors at Owensboro Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, respectively, Alschbach and Lewis host the popular podcast The Rock & Metal Profs: The History & Philosophy of Rock & Metal. Now they're bringing their keen insights to the pages of News 4U with a monthly deep dive into some of the best bands of the rock/metal genre and thoughts on music in general.

ODD PAIRINGS IN ROCK

In early November of 2022 Judas Priest was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RNRHOF). Regardless of your feelings for the legitimacy or illegitimacy of the RNRHOF, it was nice to see Priest receive their just accolades. One of the highlights of the Hall’s induction ceremony was a moment when Priest vocalist Rob Halford sang alongside fellow inductee Dolly Parton. As the pair harmonized “Jolene,” I was struck by the optics of country music icon Dolly arm-in-arm with the leather and stud-clad metal god, Rob Halford. 40 years ago, the idea that this duo would appear onstage together would have been an impossibility - 80s metal heads would have scoffed sanctimoniously. Some things just don’t go together; or do they? That got us thinking about other unlikely pairings of rock and metal artists with performers in other genres. Do people still remember the pairing of Aerosmith and Run-DMC? Rap was fairly new and had not quite broken into the mainstream. Yet, Run-DMC rejuvenated the newly reunited Aerosmith, scratching and rapping “Walk This Way” into a hit single once again. It reintroduced Aerosmith to a whole new generation and made rap and Run-DMC household names.

Elton John appeared on Alice in Chains’ 2009 track “Black Gives Way to Blue” playing the piano and performing backup vocals. Not surprisingly, the harmonizing vocals of Sir Elton, Jerry Cantrell, and vocalist William Duvall were fantastic. And while Elton has all the rock credibility in the world, few 90s AIC fans could have imagined that pairing. Elton was the establishment – pop-rock royalty and a massive commercial success. AIC was a dirty, counterculture alt-metal band indicative of the backlash against hair rock in all its commercial bombast. And how about when Johnny Cash, via his American records series, covered bands like Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails? His haunting version of “Hurt” was so good that NIN's Trent Reznor claimed it was no longer his (Reznor’s) song. Of course, Reznor himself was well known for creating unique versions of other people's songs, as he did with Queen’s “Get Down Make Love.” You just never know what kind of magic will

occur when you bring two different genres and music-makers together.

History will tell if Parton and Halford are the strangest pairing ever. With Dolly’s recent announcement of recording a rock record, we might get to see a few more odd pairings. Dolly and KISS, Dolly and Metallica, Dolly and GWAR? Who is the strangest pairing you can imagine? Let’s see if we can make it happen.

WHEN YOU FINISH SAVING THE WORLD

First-time director Jesse Eisenberg is passing the role of awkward yet charming teen movie star on to Finn Wolfhard, casting the Stranger Things actor as high schooler Ziggy, a viral musician trying to connect with his mom, played by the incomparable Julianne Moore, all while dealing with the trials and tribulations of growing up. Moore’s Evelyn works with domestic abuse survivors and has an easier time understanding them than her own son, who is in the midst of falling head over heels in love with Lila - played by 13 Reasons Why's Alisha Boe - an ultrapolitical sweetheart. “Excuse my brain for knowing what not to say,” Ziggy croons on his guitar to his 20,000 online followers. The film's title sounds like the makings of a dystopia or end-of-the-world screen grabber, but it's really a heart-warming emotional comedy about the struggles of family bonds and trying to find your place in life.

Rom-com dream team J.Lo and Josh Duhamel take the marriage trope to the next level with this action-packed happily ever after. Only this time it's not a hopeless former lover declaring their dying devotion to one of the soon-to-be newlyweds at the ceremony that derails it. Instead, it's the dangerous heist by criminals. A gang of mask-wearing, big-gun-toting bad guys storm the beach all before they can even say “I do." Lopez gets to continue her line of marriage-focused romantic comedies with everyone’s favorite toxic travel pal Jennifer Coolidge playing the mother-in-law this time. There's no conniving Jane Fonda here, but a well-intentioned momma bear who gifts the couple a cake knife that ends up strategic to the plot. Get ready to tie the knot and holster your gun when this film funnels towards you like a bride throwing her bouquet at a gaggle of gushing single girls.

Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy are comedy chemistry dynamite, pitted against each other in the ironically titled You People. Hill plays an earnest man hopeful to get Murphy’s blessing to marry his daughter – Murphy though, is frightened at such a prospect. Race is a central theme around the film, with Nia Long along for the ride as the just-assuspicious and protective mother. Hill and his boo, Lauren London, though, are ready to take the next step. This means blending their families and accepting their differences.“So, do you hang out in the 'hood all the time or do you just come here for our food and women?” Murphy deadpans to Hill as they sit in a diner during their first meeting. Director Kenya Barris co-penned the script with funnyman Hill, which means this film is sure to keep you crying from laughter and genuine human connection. It’s Guess Who? for 2023. NETFLIX 1/27

THE (UNWELCOME) RETURN OF CASEY ANTHONY

Like a bad penny, she's back. Though no one - and I mean no one - wanted to hear from her again. Nonetheless, Casey Anthony recently reappeared on NBC's Peacock streaming service for a 3-episode special (money talks, you know). Fittingly titled Where the Truth Lies, the unnecessary series sees the social pariah making all sorts of typically unbelievable claims about what actually happened back in 2008 when her two-year-old daughter Caylee seemingly vanished - all while Casey partied and repeatedly lied to her parents about the child's whereabouts. To recap, Casey's mother Cindy reported her granddaughter missing on July 15 of that year, having not been able to make contact since June 16 when Casey and Caylee reportedly left the Anthony home together. According to Casey, who was supposedly on a work assignment in Tampa, FL, at the time, Caylee was always with "Zanny the nanny" or unavailable to speak on the phone. This was just the first of a cascade of lies Casey would tell throughout the investigation into the child's disappearance.

If you followed this case at all - which, along with the OJ Simpson double murder, stands as one of the most infamous of all-time - then you know how it played out. Months after little Caylee disappeared, her remains were discovered in a wooded area not far from the Anthony home and Casey was brought into custody for making false statements to police. Among her many untruths, she claimed that "Zanny" had kidnapped Caylee yet couldn't direct investigators to the babysitter's apartment where she regularly dropped her daughter off. Basically, "Zanny" didn't exist. Nor did Casey's job at Universal Studios. The lies just went on and on. Ultimately, she was charged with the murder of Caylee and went to trial. And again, as many of you

surely know, she was acquitted, much to the disbelief of a nation gripped by this terrible tragedy.

During the trial, Casey's attorney - the slimy yet effective Jose Baez - kicked his defense of the despised young mother off with a bang, shocking the courtroom by announcing that Caylee had never actually been missing; rather, she drowned accidentally in the Anthony home pool. Suffice it to say, this was never mentioned by Casey during any of her interactions with investigators. And now 11 years later, Casey has tweaked her story again. This latest version of events puts the onus of Caylee's death and the subsequent cover-up squarely on her father Georgewho Casey claims sexually abused her from ages 8-15 and refers to as a "pedophile" (she also accuses her brother Lee of some form of sexual abuse). There's not room enough here to recount her entire story which comes across as pure fiction - just more lies from a sociopath. But Casey, never short on theatrics, sure does her best to sell it, expressing much anger and shedding many tears as she plays the victim yet again. A total waste of time, overall, but strangely fascinating in terms of human behavior. Still, let's hope this is the last of Casey Anthony for a good, long while.

Heating up: Reitz High School standout Dru Smith striving to make his mark in the NBA

Like so many talented high school basketball players before him, Dru Smith's head was filled with hoop dreams, of making it to the highest level of competition: the NBA. As a senior at Reitz High School, the Evansville native averaged nearly 21 points per game and was named to the Indiana All-Star team. College ball beckoned but despite offers from numerous regional and national universities, the promising 6'3" guard stayed put, signing on with UE under the tutelage of head coach Marty Simmonshimself a former collegiate star and just the right guy to show Smith the way to bigger things. But it didn't quite go as planned; though he made great strides during his freshman and sophomore years on the squad, even being named to the MVC Most Improved Team, the sudden exit of Simmons prompted Smith to jump ship to

the University of Missouri. There, he was forced to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules.

But Smith quickly rebounded, so to speak, becoming key to the Tigers' success during his junior and senior years. Not only did he build up an impressive scoring average but led the SEC in steals. Upon graduation, the next step seemed clear: enter the NBA draft. However, Smith's relatively short stature was seen as a potential detriment - no team seemed willing to take a chance on the determined guard. But, undeterred, he joined the Miami Heat for the 2021 Summer League and eventually signed a contract with the storied franchise. Thus began a roller coaster ride that saw Smith waived multiple times and reassigned as an affiliate player with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Yet he refused to let go of his

hoop dreams. And on November 25, 2022, Smith once again set foot on a NBA court, suiting up against the Washington Wizards and logging 16 minutes of playing time.

Smith next managed five points over 21 minutes against the Atlanta Hawks on November 27 before seeing limited action in the December 6 game versus Detroit. And though his status with the Heat is currently up in the air again, rest assured he's working tirelessly to get back in the game - no matter what it takes. Smith stands as an inspiration to anyone who has a dream in life; his perseverance is a testament to the undying spirit of competition that fuels so many of us. Hopefully he'll be back on the bench by the time this goes to print but regardless, the tri-state is supporting him all the way, like a trailer on a fast break.

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

It's a good thing that Brook Berg and Trish Jeffries live in a large home. You see, the Newburgh couple has such a deep love for animals - especially those with challenging pasts - that rescuing them is second nature by now. So much so that the number of fur babies currently residing under their roof is just shy of double digits - seven dogs and two cats, all from area shelters (four from the VHS). Of course, along with the joy of saving animals comes the heartbreak of losing them. This past November, Berg and Jeffries sadly said goodbye to Bessie, a beloved white Standard Poodle who unexpectedly passed away, leaving a big hole in their hearts. Now, as Jeffries notes, "there's never a replacement - it's never a decision

to replace an animal immediately." The couple needed to time to process the sudden loss of Bessie; yet not long after, they found themselves at the VHS with their nephews in tow - an educational trip to stress the importance of adopting. And that's when something seemingly miraculous happened.

"I was just walking by the kennels [at the VHS], just seeing who was there," Jeffries recalls. "I walked around a corner and there he was - I literally gasped, 'Oh my god!' and everyone was looking at me." So, what made Jeffries squeal with such delight? It was the sight of King, a black Standard Poodle that instantly reminded her of another dog she and Berg lost last

year. "I looked at his details and then looked at him and said, 'Buddy, we're busting you out of here today.' But despite Jeffries' excitement, she first needed to convince her wife that bringing another animal home so soon after Bessie's passing made sense. In reality, it didn't take much persuading. Because once Berg laid eyes on King, she was equally smitten. And while the couple was informed that King reportedly didn't do well with kids - the reason given why he had been returned to the VHS after his initial adoption - he seemed to warm up to the couple's nephews just fine. So the decision became clear - King was going home to Newburgh!

By all accounts, King bonded quickly with the couple's other rescues, adjusting to his new environment without too many issues. He even co-plays with some of the dogs, something that Jeffries - who grew up with poodles and watched her father train dogs - definitely encourages. "It's really great for him," she says. "And I work from home so he gets a lot of attention. He's glued to me - you would think that I've owned him my whole life."

At long last, the midterm elections are finally over. As I type this, Georgia senator Raphael Warnock has eked out a run-off victory over Republican challenger Herschel Walker, ending a truly wild and, at times, head-scratching contest between the two "politicians." When the dust mercifully settled, the 51% to 49% margin mirrored the finally tally of Senate seats for the two parties, the Democrats now holding a tiny majority - which ultimately means VP Harris won't need to cast any tiebreaking votes. UPDATE: Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema - often a thorn in her own party's side - has officially declared herself an Independent. Hardly shocking, considering Sinema's alliance with West Virginia senator Joe Manchin; together, they often stonewalled much of President Biden's agenda over the last couple of years. While her defection means the Democrats now maintain an even slimmer one seat majority in the Senate, nothing much will change big picture-wise. So no cause for alarm if you're a leftist; and if you're a conservative, take heart in the fact that the Republicans now control the

House. Really, we should all enjoy this brief moment of peace post-midterms. After all, with just two years until the next presidential election, things are about to get cray-cray, baby. A whole new war is on the horizon with the biggest prize up for grabs.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm totally fascinated by the 2024 dynamics at play. On the right, there's the ongoing debate about whether Trump should lead the Republican party once again - for myriad reasons, legal, moral and otherwise. Meanwhile, Florida governor Ron DeSantis continues to gain popularity amongst conservatives who, six years later, seem to finally be losing patience with the Donald. The GOP is clearly at a crossroads; where it goes from here is anybody's guess, though no one should be surprised if DJT manages to keep his stranglehold on thingshe's nothing if not persistent. Still, the question remains: If Trump is indeed the Republican party's choice, who will he run against? Even the most ardent Biden

supporters must be secretly wondering if their guy can keep it together long enough to simply finish out his first term. But if he goes down in flames, what other options do the Democrats have? Who can withstand - assuming Trump is the opponent - the inevitable tsunami of name-calling and insults? Especially now that his Twitter account has been restored. I'm at a loss to think of someone at the moment - so maybe liberals should just put their money on "Sleepy Joe" again and hope for the best. Regardless, the often painful process for deciding this great country's next leader is just getting started; plenty of time to cry about it in the coming months.

Of course, they're more popular now than ever - seemingly every other film released these days is superhero-based. Why? Two fairly obvious reasons, I think. First, Marvel movies tend to make a lot of money and second, people of all ages, more than ever, are looking for an escape from reality. So I get

I'm just going to rip the band-aid off and come right out with it: I do not like Marvel movies. Never have, never will. Well, let me clarify. I grew out of them when I was about 15 - sometime after I discovered that professional wrestling was fake. Tears filled my eyes when dad dropped that bomb on me while we were watching an ABC broadcast many, many years ago. This was back in the day when Jerry Lawler was "The King" and "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart reigned as the sport's most flamboyant manager. If memory serves me correct, this particular Sunday "Nature Boy" Ric Flair was locked in a brutal battle with Andre the Giant or some other brute. As I watched in horror, Flair suffered a terrible blow to the forehead and blood spewed forth, leaving me shell-shocked in my preferred TV room chair. Dad, sensing my extreme discomfort, casually remarked, "It's all fake, you know." Surely I heard him wrong. Defensively, I dramatically responded, "What?!" He then repeated his stunning accusation, adding, "They cut themselves with a razor blade to draw blood." Now I was really confused. Up until this point, I had bought the hyperbolic wrestling MARVEL MOVIES JUST DON'T DO IT FOR ME - NOT AT THIS AGE, ANYWAY. OF COURSE, THEY'RE MORE POPULAR NOW THAN EVER - SEEMINGLY EVERY OTHER FILM RELEASED THESE DAYS IS SUPERHERO-BASED.

it. But I do find it a bit weird that anyone over, say, 20 - and that's a stretch - would get all jazzed about a new Thor flick. Now, I do understand that superhero films have, you know, broadened their appeal over the years, growing darker in nature to attract a mature audience. But I still prefer smaller, more intimate films - thoughtprovoking dramas, for instance, or black comedies. Anything, really, that doesn't feature a screen full of CGI characters flying around and shooting laser beams out of their hands - or whatever they do. Maybe I'm just getting old; however, I miss real people in real scenarios doing real stuff. For real.

BLACK EYED PEAS Elevation Epic Records

The Black Eyed Peas may have lost Fergie, but they haven't lost their signature hypnotic beats. Their ninth studio album, Elevation , is more of an evolution. The band has broken through music and cultural barriers over the last two decades and they're still the epitome of cool and swag. The remaining members, will.i.am, apl.de.ap and Taboo, have completed their quartet with singer J. Rey Soul. Together, the four pulled in David Guetta and Shakira for their lead single, “Don’t You Worry.” It's filled with that high-energy, bust-a-move-on-the-dance-floor vibes we all love. The Peas continue to welcome guest vocals on tracks, bringing in lead Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on “No One Loves Me” and Anitta and El Alfa on “Simply the Best.” Other standouts include “Guarantee,” “Dance 4 U,” and the aptly-titled “Double D’z.” These electro-funk hip-hop songs simply illuminate sunshine. If you're in the mood to party or just need a shot of positivity, this is the perfect album for you. Marisa Patwa

SAWEETIE The Single Life Artistry & Warner Records

Oakland-bred rapper Saweetie is back giving us all of the bad bitch energy vibes we need with her fourth EP. We're still desperately awaiting the release of her debut full-length, Pretty Bitch Music , but these six songs definitely give us the right amount of tease to satiate our appetites. Breaking up with Migos rapper Quavo gave her the energy and lessons to curate music on her life as a single, proud, confident and successful woman in the music industry. Through all of the trials and tribulations, she always comes out on top. “BO$$ Chick” is the perfect example of the rapper in her prime, with lyrics like, “Huh, what's that in my cup? That's that potion/ Rubbin' hundreds on my skin like it's lotion/ Sitting courtside with my loc and/ Presidential Rolly on me like I'm votin'/ Smellin' like a rich bitch, I'm too potent/ I don't do the nosebleeds, I want floor seats (uh-huh).” Only the best for my best friend.

This One Direction alum has evolved from spunky British pop to more mature indie rock on his sophomore solo effort, resulting in a number one UK album. The three lead singles, “Out of My System,” “Bigger Than Me,” and “Silver Tongues,” all pack an emotionally intelligent punch, replete with beautiful vocals. Tomlinson may not have been the shining star of his former band, but as an independent artist he's truly shown he has merit and talent. Determined to provide hope after the dark days of the pandemic, Tomlinson wanted to release something to inspire his fans to appreciate the beauty of the world and he captures that idea beautifully here. "Angels Fly" is my favorite. The sweet lyrics nearly bring you to tears with, “You'll be okay, we can talk tomorrow/ I'm on my way with some time to borrow/ If every star is an eye in the sky/ You'll see angels fly (you'll see angels fly)/ I'll knock on your door, it'll save me from calling/ One single word, it could wait till the morning/ If every star is an eye in the sky/ You'll see angels fly.” Take me to Heaven, Louis. - Marisa Patwa

CANDLEMASS Sweet Evil Sun Napalm Records

Doom metal pioneers Candlemass are at it again with their newest release, Sweet Evil Sun. This Swedish outfit never fails to deliver what fans expect from them, and in today’s changing music business, that is strangely comforting. Sure, metal devotees enjoy seeing their favorite bands take chances, stretch their creative limits, and experiment with new sounds and instruments; however, Candlemass isn’t interested in any of that nonsense. Sweet Evil Sun is a well-produced set of sludge-and-trudge compositions with just the right amount of groove. Each song pummels the listener with heavy rhythms, punctuated by some really impressive melodic guitar work. It’s nice when a band knows who they are and what they do well. Candlemass doesn’t stray too far from the formula, but it’s a recipe that has worked brilliantly since 1984. Check out “Devil Voodoo” and wait for the drums during the bridge - it really captures the magic of what makes this band special.

WEYES BLOOD And in The Darkness, Hearts Aglow Sub Pop Records

The music of Los Angeles singer-songwriter Natalie Mering couldn’t be more beautiful. Mering, who records under the moniker Weyes Blood, found critical acclaim on her previous albums, Titanic Rising and Front Row Seat to Earth. On And in The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, she continues her streak of heartfelt songwriting backed by lush production and orchestral arrangements. Her music is seemingly influenced by 1970s singer-songwriters like Harry Nilsson while being quite comparable to the music of her labelmate, Father John Misty. The songs here have an ethereal, near religious feel to them as Mering uses music as a space for spirituality. If you are in need of some calming soft rock with elegant and uplifting lyricism, Weyes Blood's latest release is a must-listen.- Russ Finn

SOOT Talons of Empathy Self-released

Perhaps the coolest rock album to come out of the local Nashville scene this year belongs to Soot with their debut Talons of Empathy. Soot, who built a following in Nashville previously performing under the name Lacquer, unleash a dark, psychedelic force with these 11 tracks. Soot sounds like an amalgamation of late-era Brand New mixed with early-era Preoccupations, blending dark post-punk with metallic guitar riffs and brooding songwriting with violent, grimy lyrics. There are many standouts, one of them being “The Critic Smiles” (go figure), but my favorite track is “The Family Gun,” whose cryptic lyrics feel like an intense crime drama. Talons of Empathy is an incredible debut album from a band who will surely go on to do even greater things. - Russ Finn

TENCI A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing Keeled Scales

I believe A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing, the second studio release by Chicago indiefolk artist Tenci, will be severely slept-on and underappreciated - no one I know in real life or online has been talking about it, but it was one of 2022’s best albums. Where some artists excel in songs, Tenci excels in beautiful, intense moments - whether it’s the keys that come in halfway through opener “Shapeshifter” or the maniacal laugh and sax duet in ”Be,” A Swollen River is full of them. With wonderful instrumentation rich with acoustic guitars and woodwinds, the album is a warm and cozy listen that begs to be listened to by the fireplace as snow falls. If you like modern folk-rock acts like Big Thief or Phoebe Bridgers, please don’t overlook Tenci.- Russ Finn

DRY CLEANING Stumpwork 4AD

One of the most intriguing new bands to come out of the UK post-punk scene over the last few years, Dry Cleaning have a unique approach to songwriting - for better or worse, depending on your appetite for idiosyncratic music. Really, it all boils down to whether you can get on board with the droll, spoken-word vocals of Florence Shaw who delivers witty stream of consciousness lyrics in a flat, disaffected tone over angular guitar riffs that recall the best of early Siouxsie and the Banshees. She's a bit of a one-off, not that far removed from, say, Morrissey; you either become totally entranced by her or cringe with every syllable Shaw utters. Stumpwork, the band's second full-length studio recording, probably won't win over any naysayers, but for the converted, it's a damn fine follow-up to 2021's New Long Leg; guitarist Tom Dowse provides a top-notch soundtrack while Shaw is at her seemingly uninterested best, casually dropping pop culture-influenced lines that both flummox and amuse. On paper, it shouldn't (stump) work, but Dry Cleaning pull it off with aplomb. - Johnny Fletcher

Tribute to Peter GreenFleetwood Mac Years RB Music

Las Vegas Blues Hall of Famer Rick Berthod is back with a tribute to the late, great Fleetwood Mac founder/guitarist Peter Green. The album opens with “If You Be My Baby,” a heavy blues number with a guest appearance from Junior Brantley on piano and vocals. Berthod’s version of the classic “Black Magic Woman” sounds like the version popularized by Carlos Santana before Berthod puts his own twist on it at the end. “Jumping at Shadows” features Berthod playing heavy guitar as Billy Truitt accompanies him on the organ. Brett Barnes offers steady drumming work on “Need Your Love So Bad” as Truitt continues his masterful work on the organ.

“Oh Well” starts off sounding like a gospel song before Berthod’s rocking guitar comes in strong and Barnes hits the drums like a madman. The slide guitar work from John Zito and Barnes’ vibraphones on “Albatross” seem perfect for listening while gazing at the ocean or driving down a deserted highway. “Stop Messing Around” features extra guitar work from Stoney Curtis, Chris Tofield and Mike Varney. Ronee Mac showcases his superb bass playing skills on “Driftin’” as Berthod serves up top-notch guitar work throughout the song. The album closes with “Loved Another Woman,” a song with a funky Latin groove that will start your toes tapping.

RHINEGEIST NIGHT GLOW FRUITED SOUR

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75

This porter pours a dark chocolate color and has a thin tan head. Chocolate and coffee notes on the nose make way for more of the same on the palate. Malty, but not too heavy, and finishing with a slight coffee bitterness, this is a nice drinking porter.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thin tan head forms on this porter and stays for some time. Roasted malt scents fill the nose. Likewise, more roasted malt flavors remain while drinking the beer and during the long finish. People who enjoy the roasted malt flavor of a good porter will want to drink this seasonal offering. Pair it with foods like hearty beef dishes or your favorite chocolate desserts like chocolate cake. Mix it with ice cream for an adult float.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a dark black coffee-colored beer which I thought would be more of an amber. I can taste the molasses but it's not overpowering. Same goes for the chocolate and coffee flavors. That isn’t a bad thing because this could be more of a session beer. For a dark beer it's not that filling and rather enjoyable.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This fruited sour pours a strawberry red, with no head. Very effervescent on the nose with notes of cherry and citrus. On the palate it is crisp and tart, with sour cherry on the finish, and no lasting bitterness. Overall, a tasty beer to bring in the New Year.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A pinkish head forms on this red beer and evaporates quickly. The scent boasts a lot of fruit notes. The fruit flavors continue with the initial tasting of the beer, with sour notes remaining in the very long finish. This beer might work well in place of a soda during the hot summer months. Pair it with a hearty pot roast, other braised meats, or sweet foods like raspberry pots de crème or ganache fruit tart.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a pink and fizzy beer that's not quite as tart as other sours I've tried. I can taste some fruit flavors, possibly peach and some other fruits. Overall, it's almost like drinking a type of cider. If you're a fan of that style of beverage then this might be a good choice for you.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This potent ale pours a hazy orange with a medium white head. Citrus and a bit earthy on the nose. It has medium body and a nice mouthfeel. Pine and citrus on the palate and a touch of malty sweetness that is balanced well with the hops bitterness.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thin white head rests on this hazy and unfiltered beer. A good balance of malt and hops dominate the scent profile. Likewise, the balance of malt and hop flavors stay on the tongue while drinking the beer, with the hops developing a more prominent taste in the finish. Sip this beer while sitting by a roaring fireplace during the cold winter months. Pair it with your favorite holiday foods with friends and family.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a slightly hazy amber-colored beer. It has an ABV of 8.3% and a sweet hops flavor with a nice citrus punch. It's more like an IPA considering the spices I can detect. I was expecting an average beer but Bifrost is actually very complex and thoroughly refreshing.

SIERRA NEVADA CELEBRATION FRESH HOP IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75

This IPA pours a dark amber with a nice thick creamy head. Notes of citrus and pine on the nose that blend well with the malty sweetness on the palate. The pine and citrus hop flavors are dominant on the palate and it finishes with a pleasing hop bitterness, making this a go-to for the IPA lover.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick off-white head tops this IPA and never totally dissipates. The dark brown beer contains a generous amount of hops that come through in the scent. The first sip of the beer offers sweet

malt flavors, but the malt and hops wrestle back and forth in the extended finish. This beer deserves a place in your refrigerator during the holidays. Use it as an ingredient in fruitcake for a treat during the holidays.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a clear amber color with good carbonation. I'm a fan of Sierra Nevada and this one does not disappoint - it may be the sweetest IPA I've ever had. It's very easy to drink and I like the nice malt flavor with light spices. Hard to believe the ABV is 6.8% considering how smooth it goes down.

Q:My New Year's resolution for 2023 is to finally pursue a law degree - something I've always wanted to do but lacked the time and resources. While I'm excited about this next phase of my life, I've yet to decide what area of law I'd like to focus on. From your perspective, what are the challenges and rewards of being a personal injury attorney? Getting your thoughts might help to point me in the right direction.

A:As I look back, I am glad that I decided to pursue a law degree, but I would not want to go through law school again. People sometimes ask, would you recommend that one of your three kids pursue a law degree? I respond that I would not encourage nor discourage my children or anyone else from pursuing law. Rather, I would ask why?

If the answer is simply because he/she wanted to make money, then I would respond not to do it. If, however, there was some other purpose for pursuing a law degree, like helping people or an interest in some specific area of law, then I

would say go for it.

This brings us to the question posed: How does one know what area of law to concentrate on? Contrary to common belief, most law schools do not focus too heavily on a particular area of law. Instead, in the final year of law school a student may take a few extra classes in a particular area.

Too often, law students graduate with debt and are forced to take a job that is offered versus a job that interests the student. After a couple of years in that area of law, it becomes more difficult to switch areas because the area of law

practiced is what the lawyer knows and what his/her reputation is tied to.

So, my advice is to use law clerk positions and internships during law school and the summers to get a wide range of experiences. This would help the law student to figure out what area of law to pursue after graduating. Then upon graduation, try to get the right job in that area of law.

Law school and the practice of law are hard, but so are most things worth pursuing.
