A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Well, summer has truly hit its stride now and as Stevie Wonder sang back in 1980 on his reggae-infused megahit, "Master Blaster (Jammin')," "it's hotter than July." Though I suppose it doesn't make much sense to say that in July. Really, I was just feeling nostalgic for that golden period of music in 1980 when bands such as Blondie and Devo - and artists like Stevie Wonderrocked my 10-year-old world. By day I was a typical sixth-grader with no clue about anything; by night I was a wannabe pop vocalist, singing along to the likes of
"Master Blaster" as I spun 45s on my foldup record player - suitcase style. Looking back, it's rather entertaining to picture my nerdy self grooving to a reggae track with lyrics about "jamming until the break of dawn" and professions of devotion to Jah. Pretty sure I rarely stayed up past 11 p.m. back then and certainly knew little about the religious hierarchy of Zimbabwe. Still, you gotta admit that I had pretty good taste in music for a kid who'd just reached double digits. Speaking of good music... several excellent concerts are on the tristate agenda this month, including country singer Cody Jinks, the annual Rock the
Dam hair metal extravaganza and former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. In addition, the Vanderburgh County Fair returns with headlining act Drake Milligan. In truth, July is serving as a bit of a needed breather after several crazy months of high-profile performances; and do be sure to catch your breath, because August is set to rev things right up again with multiple big name stars headed to stages around the area. Until then, check out which area businesses have been deemed the cat's meow by News 4U readers in our annual Best of the Tri-State feature. All that and more inside.- TE

BEST OF THE TRI-STATE 2023
ROCK THE VOTE: NEWS 4U READERS WEIGH IN ON THEIR FAVORITE BARS, BUSINESSES, RESTAURANTS AND MORE
After several weeks of online voting, the ballots have been tabulated, (figuratively speaking - there were no hanging chads to muddy the waters) and now we can reveal who made the cut in News 4U's annual Best of the TriState feature. Let it be said that the margins were razor-thin in many of the categories proving that everyone is effectively a winner, as the cliché goes. Really, there are so many first-rate businesses in the area; it's not really a competition, but for what it's worth, here are the results of the 2023 voting - take a look and see if your own favorites got the nod. One thing's for sure, we should all be able to agree on the merits of our cover star, Leroy's Tavern. There are few establishments in town with the legacy of this west side institution, boasting four generations behind the bar and over 50 years of service to the tri-state! Read all about the history of Leroy's on the following page.

LEROY'S TAVERN
WEST SIDE FAVORITE STILL KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY AFTER MORE THAN FIVE DECADES IN BUSINESS
Four generations behind the bar. Few establishments can lay claim to the legacy of Leroy's tavern, a tri-state favorite for over five decades and counting. In fact, this August marks the 53rd anniversary of the west side institution with no end in sight. Owner Terri Carl has designs on making sure the business stays in the family for years to come - and the bar's many loyal patrons couldn't be happier. Voted by News 4U readers as the "Best Tavern" and "Best Place for Karaoke," Leroy's has built its reputation on giving back to the community, financially supporting countless area causes and organizations while also continuing to offer unbeatable food and drink specials (i.e., Mon-Fri lunch: sandwich & fries or onion rings and a non-alcoholic drink for $8 plus tax). As Carl notes emphatically, "I'll never be rich by worldly standards but will be rich by godly standards; helping those that that need it more than I do, that's our service - that's why I'm in business."
1970-2010: THE FIRST FOUR DECADES - Leroy and Shirley Baize were both working normal day jobs in 1970 but decided to roll the dice and invest in a small neighborhood bar on Evansville's west side that they often frequented. Renaming the place Leroy's, the couple toiled day and night to make it a success, eventually expanding the shotgun establishment in the 90's and, at the suggestion of their daughter Terri, introducing karaoke on the weekends. The business continued to blossom through the
years with big draws like free soup on Saturdays and an overall welcoming atmosphere. But sadly, Leroy was stricken with cancer and passed away after four decades at the helm of this tristate favorite; however, his death set the stage for the bar's next phase.
2011: THE PASSING OF THE TORCH - It had been decided within the family that Terri would take over Leroy's Tavern after her father's passing - and the first thing Carl did was set about reviving Franklin Street, the long-neglected west side strip. She helped to form the Franklin Street Events Association, an organization dedicated to supporting the community in myriad ways through various fundraisers and family-friendly entertainment options. Soon new businesses were popping up, eager to take advantage of the newly busy west side street. Carl also hastened the evolution of Leroy's, introducing draft beer and creating a sports lover's haven with 10 big screen TVs displaying all the big games and no end of local and regional sports memorabilia covering the walls. Most importantly, her daughter Niki became a key player at the bar, a third generation worker driving its success. Together, with GM Tracy Jones, the two have laid the groundwork for Carl to pass the Leroy's torch yet again in the coming years.
2022: THE FOURTH GENERATION - During a lapse in proper personnel at the bar, Carl's

102ND VANDERBURGH COUNTY FAIR
VANDERBURGH 4-H CENTER / JULY 24-29
Country singer Drake Milligan headlines the tristate's favorite summer festival
For over a century, the Vanderburgh County fair has been a staple of the tri-state summer season, bringing friends and families together from all over the region for six days of non-stop fun. In addition to carnival rides and competitive cookoffs, this annual community gathering features everything from go cart races, a car show, demolition derby and rodeo to pageants, comedy illusionists, goat shows and a watermelon seed spitting contest. It's a cliché, but it's true - there really is something for everyone at the Vanderburgh County Fair.
Of course, the biggest draw of this
multi-faceted festival is the mid-week concert featuring a high-profile performer from the world of country music. This year organizers have booked up-andcomer Drake Milligan to take the stage Wednesday night with support from Dylan Schneider - talk about a one-two punch of young talent. Best known for portraying Elvis Presley on the CMT series Sun Records, Milligan has also appeared on American Idol and America's Got Talent. In addition, his 2022 album Dallas/ Fort Worth produced the top 40 Country Airplay single "Sounds Like Something I'd Do"; the song was later nominated for "Male Breakthrough Video of the Year" at the 2023 CMT Music Awards. Clearly, the Texas native is on a major upward trajectory and we're lucky to have a front row seat to his blossoming career.
Special guest Schneider has also been busy making his mark in country music. At just 23, the Indiana-born singer - from
Terre Haute, officially - has released five EPs to date, including 2019's Whole Town Talk which featured tracks co-written by Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line. Sensing big things on the horizon, Billboard promptly named Schneider "Country Music's Next Rising Star." There's no doubt the kid is going places, so don't miss out on what promises to be a glimpse of great things to come.
*Daily admission is $10 or you can opt for a $30 season pass which covers all six days of entertainment. Kids 9 & under get in free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate (cash only), the 4-H Center Office, all Schnuck's stores and the 4-H Extension Office in Darmstadt.

J.J. THA WIKID 1
Evansville rapper drops "On a Boat," a summer jam made for the waves
Akey member of the local hip-hop scene for over 20 years now, Jason Johnson - aka J.J. Tha Wikid 1 - first caught the tri-state's attention via WSM (Wikid Style Music), a rap trio formed in 2000. Two official albums followed, with 2012's Second Coming, in particular, highlighting the rapidfire delivery of Johnson and partners in rhyme Indy Evans and Roc. But despite the promise of such an accomplished release, the three friends eventually came to a creative fork in the road and parted ways. Then all went silent. Behind the scenes, though, Johnson was gradually getting his mojo back; it just took a few years to rediscover the inspiration and drive necessary to produce top-notch work. Finally, in 2019, the spark was fully lit as he collaborated on a project with fellow rapper Whydhe Write, recording the 9-track Instrumentalcidal. Johnson, now feeling it again, was off to the races, ready to go all-in on a solo venture and reclaim his rightful place
in the Evansville hip-hop scene.
The initial audio evidence of Johnson's newfound autonomy arrived in 2020 with "They Won't Know"
which served as a reminder that he can spit rhymes at the speed of sound, seemingly. Independently produced in all aspects, it set the stage for Overdue, a six-song EP released last year. The signature track, "Wikid Flow" - a theme song of sorts - has reached nearly 25K views on YouTube alone and the others aren't far behind. Impressively, not only did Johnson record, mix and master the project himself, he filmed and edited videos for each song, proving that if there's a will, there's a way. Now the übermotivated rapper is placing all bets on his latest release, "On a Boat," which dropped June 23. Summer jam, anyone?
Tailor-made for parties on the river, this feel-good track is bound to get bumped up and down the Ohio: "We work hard then we play hard/ The fruits of
our labor are now in charge/ Gonna turn it up and enjoy the rewards/ Having some fun 'cause we got the free card." Johnson seals the deal with an earworm of a chorus: "We on a boat trip, we on a boat trip/ Yeah, we cruisin', yeah, we win and they losin'/ We on a boat trip, we on a boat trip/ Takin' it easy, just feelin' the breezes/ We on a boat trip, we on a boat trip/ And we be clownin', just loungin' deep and down with the friends." To ensure that everyone can enjoy this potential smash, two versions are available, including a family-friendly radio edit. Johnson wants kids to get on board with this hot weather anthem, too - the message is simply the joy of spending time with people you love.
A video for "On a Boat" is in the works but until then, you can check out the track on major streaming platforms.

TRENT "B-FACE" SMALL
Battling back from lingering health issues, local hip-hop performer takes A Minute to Breathe
Evansville's Trent "B-Face" Small is a truly inspiring individual. Over the last several years the twenty-something father of two has been put through the wringer over and over again, battling cancer and enduring chemo treatments only to suffer setbacks to his health. But Small's persevered, refusing to feel sorry for himself; all along, he's just wanted to be there for his girls, to be able to provide for his family once again. To help the healing process, the tri-state rapper documented his often dark journey in song on two heart-wrenching yet therapeutic projects, The Chemo Chronicles and The Small World - the latter featuring guest appearances from some of the local hip-hop community's top talents who pulled together to support Small in his time of need. Many of these performers then went one better by helping him throw a heck of a 25th birthday party/record release celebration in September of 2022 at STAGEtwo in Evansville. It was a triumphant moment after so much uncertainty.
Now Small is readying the release of his biggest project to date. Set to drop this month, the appropriately-titled A Minute to Breathe
picks up where The Small World left off as the brutally honest rapper depicts both the good and the bad he's experienced over the last year with assistance from the likes of Becca Small, Cam Roberts, Nickademus, J Sich, King Coop and Preston HD, plus a star turn on "Poet" by London-born rapper Wrekonize who was previously signed to Tech N9ne's Strange Music label. In addition, the album was reportedly recorded with some well-known producers - something that's immediately apparent from the opening title track which slaps hard, displaying an evolution in sound. Most noticeably, there's a wonderful balance of melody and grittiness across A Minute to Breathe, ethereal guitar and keyboard motifs playing off of lo-fi drum patterns to create a sort of grungy yet dreamlike atmosphere. This dichotomy is heard most effectively on "Ups and Downs" which neatly sums
up Small's ongoing struggles: "The ups and downs never stop/ That's just part of life/ When you find yourself at the top it doesn't feel right/ 'Cause there's always another obstacle that you gotta climb/ Before you know it you're so out of touch with time."
The emotional closer "Weak" details Small's efforts to keep his "poker face" on regardless of what he's going through - to never admit defeat. "You can have everything you want and still not feel complete," he intones, stressing the importance of being at peace with the lot you've been given. Few people can relate to that sentiment more than Small; at such a young age he's already experienced a lifetime of pain and suffering. Yet he keeps on keeping on, setting an incredible example for the rest of us to follow.

THE ROCK & METAL PROFS
WITH MATT ALSCHBACH & DR. COURT LEWIS
Associate professors at Owensboro Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, respectively, Alschbach and Lewis host the popular podcast The Rock & Metal Profs: The History & Philosophy of Rock & Metal. Now they're bringing their keen insights to the pages of News 4U with a monthly deep dive into some of the best bands of the rock/metal genre and thoughts on music in general.
SUNSET STRIP IN THE 1980S: TALENTED, DETERMINED, AND DELUDED
For those who may not remember, Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip in the 1980s was the epicenter of the rock and metal music world. A handful of music venues on the Strip featured legendary acts such as Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Dokken and just about every hair metal band that graced MTV. There was something special happening on the Sunset Strip, and it started with the diligent work of bands promoting themselves through word-of-mouth, the often unauthorized use of workplace photocopiers, and the distribution of demo tapes on easily reproducible cassettes. By the early to mid1980s, clubs like the Viper Room, the Rainbow Room, Gazzarri’s, the Troubadour and the Roxy were a mecca for hundreds of bands and young rock and metal fans living in L.A., San Bernardino and surrounding communities.
For these fans, the Strip promised freedom and (for many) the Holy Grail of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Some of the biggest names who found fame on the Strip were Poison, Faster Pussycat, Y & T, Dokken, WASP, Vixen, Ratt, Alcatrazz, LA Guns, and of course, Guns N' Roses. Music videos from these bands highlighted the excess and debauchery of the Sunset Strip. Of course, the greatest video evidence of the Strip can be found in
Penelope Spheeris’ 1988 documentary
The Decline of Western Civilization part II: The Metal Years
Spheeris’ film features interviews with seasoned musicians such as Gene Simmons, Dave Mustaine and Alice Cooper, all offering insight into what it takes to be successful in the industry. Even more compelling is that her movie peels back the façade of hair metal to highlight the often sexist, phony, and formulaic nature of the late-80s metal scene on the Strip. You get a front row seat to the heavy use of make-up, genderbending (but without Bowie and KISS’s originality), spandex, and all the trappings that eventually turned hair rock into a parody of itself. In the film, young bands try hard to be sleazy and overtly sexual, but it’s clear these young men and women are simply emulating what they’ve seen from more established performers in the genre. In their attempts to be bombastic, it’s obvious to the viewer that these bands were more focused on the excess than with the music, the business, and the hard
work required to have success and staying power in the industry. Many of the bands profiled never produced an album - their names are lost to time. Nevertheless, the film highlights a special moment in rock and metal music history when the promise of stardom resided on the Sunset Strip. It was an exciting place where young men and women went to see and be seen, to meet other like-minded fans, and, at times, to engage in behaviors that their parents would not have condoned.
The Rock & Metal Profs podcast is available on iTunes, Google and Spotify.

I'M GLAD MY MOM DIED
by Jennette McCurdy
Actress Jennette McCurdy, known for her roles on the Nickelodeon shows iCarly and Sam & Cat released her memoir in 2022, and the title alone, I’m Glad My Mom Died, was enough to capture my attention. The book is devastating, hilarious, tear-inducing, and heartwarming all at once as it navigates and explores McCurdy’s relationship with her mother growing up into adulthood and even the effect her mother still had on her after she died.
McCurdy went through a lot of the same things many people experience growing up, from disordered eating to sexual harassment. For McCurdy, though, most of it was because of her mother. I think what’s unique about books like this is that we sometimes idolize the famous, often forgetting they are real people who oftentimes had real lives before becoming a household name. Never once growing up did I think the person I watched on the screen every week was going through very similar and very different experiences as me.
Hearing the pain in her voice on the audiobook while talking about her experiences made it more real to me, putting her in a different light than I had as a child, realizing that we all grow up with traumas that haunt us. During the audio, I felt like I was having a conversation, and even though it was one-sided, I felt seen and understood. I didn’t feel like my experiences, and the experiences of others, were anomalies. Knowing that McCurdy has been able to take back her life and begin doing the things that she wants to do can provide the reader with a sort of power and encouragement to do the same thing in their life, knowing that there’s at least one other person on this Earth who has been able to do that for themselves. -

BARBIE
Margot Robbie is slipping on the pink plastic shoes Tyra Banks first rocked in Life-Size and turning into a real life Barbie. This movie is truly the sugary culmination of our girly childhood dreams, with Ryan Gosling playing the surf-obsessed, hunky Ken. With talented filmmaker Greta Gerwig at the helm of this project, Barbie promises to be modern, spunky and fun. And while the main stars still reflect the white Barbie and Ken we grew up with as children, there's an insanely diverse and exciting supporting cast playing their own versions of the two, including Issa Rae as President Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie and Ncuti Gatwa as yet another sparkly Ken. Not to mention Kate McKinnon plays the weird witch Barbie and Will Ferrell shows up as the pompous CEO of Mattel who wants to put her back in a box. It’s time to see if this Barbie girl can handle the real world.

JOYRIDE
Joyride is a groundbreaking comedy with not just Asian actors leading this film but Asian women. The casting is perfect, with Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) at the center as a woman who was adopted by white parents and now wants to travel to China to find her birth parents. Of course, she enlists a group of eccentric women to help her: logical childhood best friend Lolo (Sherry Cola); dramatic college roommate Kat (Stephanie Hsu); and Sabrina Wu as the deadpan Deadeye. Joyride is not just the Asian version of Girls Trip. In this film, it's all about the hilarious, emotional and weird journey they take, instead of soaking up the destination. These women truly go through it, from being bamboozled by a drug dealer on a train to trying to hop on an international flight posing as K-Popstars after the suitcase containing their passports gets stolen. You’ll want to hop on this debaucherous ride.

THE HAUNTED MANSION
This ghostly Disney classic is getting a fresh take 20 years after the Eddie Murphy film first scared me silly as a 9-year-old. This otherworldly adventure follows a doctor (Rosario Dawson) and her shy son (newcomer Chase W. Dillon), who enlist a rag-tag band of “spiritual experts” to help rid their New Orleans mansion of its supernatural visitors. LaKeith Stanfield helps the family as a paranormal tour guide; Tiffany Haddish connects with the supernatural squatters as a psychic; Owen Wilson gets religious as a priest; and Danny DeVito riles up current events as a history professor. Jared Leto also frightens as the big, bad Hatbox Ghost, with Hasan Minhaj making a cameo as a skeptical sketch artist and Jamie Lee Curtis appearing as an ancient psychic stuck in a crystal ball. With plenty of nods to the popular Magic Kingdom park ride, this new iteration is set to be both scarier and funnier than ever.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE
CASEY WHITE: AN UPDATE
It was the true crime story that put Evansville in the national spotlight just over a year ago.
Casey White, a convict serving 75 years for an array of charges, including attempted murder, escaped from an Alabama prison with the help of 56-year-old Vicky White, assistant director of corrections, sparking an 11-day manhunt for the pair. As the case gained notoriety, it was given more and more airtime with a parade of talking heads debating the central question: where were Casey and Vicky? The answer, it turned out, would stun the tri-state. Because for the better part of their time on the run, the two had been holed up right here in Evansville, staying at a motel off of US 41 North. Authorities, tipped off by a local business owner, swooped in and the chase was on - though it was brief. Casey and Vicky's journey ended on May 9, 2022, in a car crash just off the highway. Surrounded by police with guns drawn, the former surrendered while the latter shot herself in the head, clearly unwilling to face the music. After all, Vicky had reportedly been a model employee and a generally good person - those who knew her simply couldn't, and still can't, wrap their minds around her actions.
Last month Casey returned to a courtroom to receive sentencing for the escape. He pleaded guilty (which disposed of a murder charge he faced in relation to Vicky White’s suicide) and got life with the possibility of parole; however, that's on top of his original prison term of 75 years. Long story short, he's not going anywhere anytime soon. During the proceedings, it was reported that Casey stated he "felt like the most hated man in the world" and apologized to Vicky's family; he
claimed that her only regret was "leaving behind her family." Casey further noted that Vicky was "the first person to give him a hug in six years" and that he "wouldn't drag her name through the mud for anyone in the courtroom." Hard to say whether these pronouncements were sincere; Casey is known as a master manipulator and he clearly played on Vicky's vulnerabilities to break his way out of jail.
Perhaps the most unexpected piece of information to come out of the sentencing of Casey White was the revelation that he confessed to a murder during his time on the run with Vicky. He reportedly told NewsNation's Brian Entin that “there is a dead body up there [in Evansville, Indiana] that ain’t been buried yet." This apparent bombshell was dropped during a call from jail back in December of 2022. However, authorities believe Casey is lying. There's no evidence of a murder in Evansville during that time period - the "confession" appears to be just another attempt at manipulation on Casey's part, just another game he's playing with authorities. One thing's for sure, this case will be talked about locally for years to come.

ELLIS PARK RACING WIENER DOG RACES 2023
ELLIS PARK RACING / JULY 22 & 29
Hotdog! Beloved event benefiting area animal rescues and organizations returns
Presented by Reditus Property Holdings, LLC and Taylor's Body Shop, Inc., the Ellis Park Racing Wiener Dog Races are back and cuter than ever - and it's all for a great cause. As in years past, proceeds from this beloved event will benefit participating animal rescues and organizations, including Feline Fix, New Hope Animal Rescue, PAAWS No-Kill Animal Rescue, Paw Street, Inc. and Warrick Humane Society. At least 50 dachshunds will run their little legs off with the ultimate goal of being crowned top dog on July 29. But first up is the Ellis Park Dachshund Derby Qualifiers on July 22 to determine which wiener dogs will proceed to the finals a week later. The competition, as in years past, is bound to be fierce yet entirely adorable - and tons of fun!
The rescues and organizations noted above will be on-site for the finals on July 29 accompanied by adoptable animals, along with SWAG to purchase and human and pet treats. Plus, you
can participate in family-friendly activities - this is an event for all-ages to enjoy so bring a big group to Ellis Park and cheer on the wiener dogs! Most importantly, please consider donating to the cause. As local animal advocate and event sponsor Brian Buxton notes, "One thing I want to bring awareness to with this event is what the rescues and shelters do on a daily basis, what their needs are, how people can help support them, and how they help not only local animals, but also local families. Low cost vaccine clinics, low cost spay/neuter, free food programs, TNR for feral cats (trap, neuter, release) etc. They not only help homeless and abused animals in the area, but they also help reunite lost animals with their families and help low income or struggling families keep the pets they already have in their homes."
Keep in mind that even if you can't adopt or foster an animal, you can sponsor one by covering vet bills, food costs, adoption fees, etc. You can also

EACH MONTH WE’LL BE CHECKING IN WITH THE VHS FOR THE LATEST GOOD NEWS AND TO HELP FIND FUREVER HOMES FOR SOME OF THEIR MORE UNIQUE AND OLDER RESIDENTS
BOLT: Don’t let his name fool you, this gentleman is NOT looking to go anywhere in a hurry. Meet Bolt! At 14-years-young, he’s looking to find a home to settle down in. Bolt found himself at the Vanderburgh Humane Society after his long-time owner fell ill. Don’t let his age deter you, he still loves to play and cuddle as much as the young ones! His $80 adoption fee covers his neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations. Apply for Bolt at vhslifesaver.org, or come meet him in person at the shelter!
CHIP: Meet Chip! He’s about everything you’d expect in a 5-month-old baby bunny - active, playful, curious, and prone to zoomies. Chip is a busy body and can get squirmy if held too long. One should also keep in mind that baby buns tend to be a little messier than adult rabbits (kids, amirite?) But alas, with age (and neutering) comes maturity. Chip will be a grown-up bunny before you know it, leaving you to wonder where the time has gone. So if you’re a rabbit lover and want to experience raising your own, here’s your chance! Chip’s $50 adoption fee includes his neuter and microchip.
JACK: Ready for a loyal companion with years of experience? If so, meet Jack! His favorite thing in the world? Getting pets from you! He walks very gingerly on a leash, does not jump up on people, and is all around gentle. He would love to spend his golden years snoozing on the couch and giving you loads of kisses. Legend has it that 12-year-old Jack still gets the zoomies from time to time - ready to find out for yourself? Come meet him at the VHS! His $150 adoption fee covers all of the bells and whistles. Over the age of 65? You’re eligible for our Pets for Seniors Program, in which case his adoption fee would be waived! Visit vhslifesaver.org to learn more.

DEAN & DARIUS
VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT
After getting married in August of 2022, Evansville newlyweds Melissa and Sam Bassemier were more than ready to adopt a baby - a fur baby, that is. Though Sam came into the relationship with a pet snake named Marshmallow, the couple wanted to expand their family. So as the New Year arrived they headed over to the VHS with the intent of rescuing a kitten; instead, they came home with two adult cats. "We were looking around at what the Humane Society had to offer and saw Darius and Dean - they were brothers, a bonded pair that had to be adopted together," Melissa says. "We are actually so grateful for that stipulation because now that we have
them, they are so tight-knit and have such a close bond. It makes perfect sense that they had to be adopted together."
The initial meeting with these bonded cat brothers wasn't terribly promising, however. The pair reacted nervously and wouldn't interact with the Bassemiers. Their skittishness continued even after the couple brought Darius and Dean home. "They did not want to leave their carrier for the first 24 hours - they just held onto each other," Melissa recalls.
"We let them stay in our office and get comfortable and eventually they started walking around and exploring."
ONE OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS IS WATCHING HOW THEY CUDDLE WITH EACH OTHERWHEN THEY SLEEP THEY LITERALLY HOLD EACH OTHER; IT'S SO CUTE.
Within a few months, Darius and Dean - named after two members of Hootie & The Blowfish - had fully acclimated to their new surroundings and truly become part of the family which pleased the Bassemiers to no end. "One of our favorite things is watching how they cuddle with each other - when they sleep they literally hold each other; it's so cute," Melissa says.
Though brothers, Darius and Dean certainly differ in personality. The latter loves to have his belly rubbed and loves to be held ("He's more like a dog," Melissa jokes), while the former enjoys being petted but not picked up - and also prefers to be sat up high on something. Additionally, Darius has earned the nickname "Duck Duck" due to his meows and purrs mimicking the quack of a duck. Dean, on the other hand, is known as "Bub Bub" around the house. But personality quirks and alternate names aside, they're really starting to open up. Melissa notes that while it's taken a number of months, Darius and Dean now warm up to people quickly whereas before, the pair would only let their guard down with the Bassemiers. Things can only get better from here...

AS I TYPE THIS...
with Barold Hume
I'd swear that I just did this. Hardly a column or two ago yours truly was yammering away about former President Trump being indicted. I even had a catchy headline: Was it right to indict? And per the usual, I came to a neutral conclusion - a very Swiss mentality, you could say. Keeps me out of the fray, more importantly. Last thing I need is some lunatic showing up at N4U headquarters demanding to have my head on a platter because I dared to express an unpopular opinion. Only half-joking, by the way. Regardless, here we are again with DJT being indicted - on the federal level this time - for the mishandling of classified government documents and obstruction of justice. (As a reminder, the previous indictment was related to the Stormy Daniels/hush money saga.) And much like you can count on me for a down-the-middle take on things, politicians and pundits on the left and the right have reacted ever so predictably. With a few exceptionsthe likes of former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, Senator Mitt Romney and former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson - Republicans have rallied around Trump,
insisting that the indictment is politically-motivated and totally hypocritical...hey, what about Hillary and Hunter?! Democrats, conversely, are cautiously optimistic that this could be the charge that FINALLY sticks. They should know better by now, of course. Having said that, I've taken a look at the evidence and it's no bueno for DJT. But even if you think this is just a continuation of the "witch hunt," the simple fact remains: all the guy had to do was return the documents when he was subpoenaed - just give them back like President Biden and former VP Mike Pence did.
Before this latest indictment sitch arose, I was really wanting to dive into the long list of candidates jockeying for position on the Republican side. Since my last column several more contenders have announced their intention to take on Trump, for better or worse (for worse, most definitely - none of them stand a chance). At last count, there were 11 or so hopefuls - including newbies like South Carolina senator Tim Scott, North Dakota governor Doug
Burgum and investor Vivek Ramaswamy. But there are also familiar names like Christie and Pence getting in the mix. Frankly, it's starting to feel like 2016 all over again. I recall something like 16 candidates at the outset, all bright-eyed and bushy-taileduntil Trump started picking them off two and three at a time. This time around, with such a big lead over the pack, there doesn't seem to be much motivation for him to debate at all, especially considering that only a few of his potential opponents are polling above 1%. Well, Florida governor Ron DeSantis is at least in double-digits at the moment - but still a ways back. He'll never admit it, but this indictment may be his only hope of closing the DJT gap.
FRANKLY, IT'S STARTING TO FEEL LIKE 2016 ALL OVER AGAIN. I RECALL SOMETHING LIKE 16 CANDIDATES AT THE OUTSET, ALL BRIGHT-EYED AND BUSHYTAILED - UNTIL TRUMP STARTED PICKING THEM OFF TWO AND THREE AT A TIME.

(DON'T) BRING THE NOISE
Iseem to recall a period back in the late 80s and into the 90s when the phrase "bring the noise" was all the rage. Not sure if Public Enemy was solely responsible for its introduction into the lexicon, though the legendary hip-hop group certainly brought it to the forefront via the 1988 release of It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back . The criticallyacclaimed album, armed with bombastic production by the Bomb Squad, featured "Bring the Noise" as the opening track. Then in 1991, thrash metal band Anthrax put their own spin on the PE classic, beefing things up with chugging guitars and pounding drums. Most heavy music fans seemed to approve of this unexpected merging of genres. Indeed, the track inspired much head-banging and plenty of whooping and hollering, especially when played live. In 1995 came Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk , an

off-Broadway musical with a story told through tap. I can still recall seeing clips from the show - absolutely incredible dancing. And now that I think of it, incredibly loud. See, this is what happens to some of us when we get old; the allure of volume loses its shine. I was totally on board with everyone bringing the noise back in the day - the louder the better, really. Now, as I edge ever closer to retirement age, I crave peace and quiet. Yet society could care less.
Living on a busy street as I do, I can confidently state that at least half of Evansville's drivers are in need of a new muffler - or a muffler. And don't get me started on motorcycles. You often see signs warning everyone to watch out for them, imploring us to be hyper-aware of their existence for safety reasons. Trust me, there's no mystery that motorcycles
are on the road - I'm routinely blasted out of my front yard by the ear-splitting motor of a Harley as it whizzes by my house at a speed far above the posted limit. 35 mph? Think again, buddy. These hotshots on a hog have far too much horsepower at their fingertips. Gotta crank it up and get to that red light as fast as possible!! And while I'm on a roll, allow me to give a shout-out to the drivers who find it necessary to pump up the volume and the bass, in particular, of their stereos as they go tooling around the city - to the point where their cars are literally vibrating. Nothing quite so enjoyable as being stuck next to one of these goofballs at an intersection. Thank you for letting me and everyone else know that you have terrible taste in music. In short, don't bring the noise, please.

Dear News4U Editor,
Of course you can. I’m pretty certain that was one of the stipulations that was presented to me when I was initially asked to take on this new feature in the magazine.
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A GHOST OR FELT ONE'S PRESENCE?
Dear Casper,
I feel you lingering over me as I try to get this done because I am behind deadline. Maybe if you stop knocking over my iced coffee every five minutes, I can actually think and come up with insightful responses to these questions rather than ramble on with nonsense soliloquies. Christ - no wonder you’ve not had your own film since 2006. You’re super difficult to work with.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST DEBUT ALBUM OF ALL-TIME, IN YOUR OPINION? BAND OR SOLO ARTIST.
Dear Clearly Interested Reader Who Actually Gives A Damn About My Opinion,
Though my debut album - Only Human , which is available now on Spotify and other music providers even though the music and production haven't aged well - would clearly be my pick because of how awesome I am, let’s be modest and highlight someone else due to my incurable “great guy syndrome” I was diagnosed with at birth.
The second greatest debut album of all-time comes from the Los Angeles-based rock band New Radicals with their absolutely dynamic record Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too released in 1998. The group was only around for one album and is considered a one-hit wonder with the top 40 hit “You Get What You Give.” But if you actually listen to that entire record front-to-back, it is a phenomenal showcase of classic pop sounds, alternative rock, soul and a little bit of humor without coming off as a novelty.

JANELLE MONÁE The Age of Pleasure Atlantic Records
Janelle Monáe is letting the fruity juices of summer flow with her luscious fourth studio album. She kicked it off with a bang; saucy lead single “Lipstick Lover” has quite the sumptuous music video to capture the sultry, tropical femme vibes the song radiates. Cue Monáe lounging and discovering her sexuality at a gorgeous pool party where the energy is flirtatious and carefree. Monáe has impressed us since she first sparked on the music scene in 2011, dueting with Fun on “We Are Young.” With this release, Monáe is unabashedly more herself than ever. The whole album is stripped back and gives us a deep look into her musical beauty. Instead of powerhouse vocals and colorful pantsuits, we are getting psychedelic pop, Afro beats, reggae, R&B and soul. It’s the perfect cocktail for the warmer months. Other standouts that will have you feeling like you’re drinking coconuts are “Water Slide” and “Black Sugar Beach," while the swag from “Float” drips like gold and her bars hit like ice stacking an igloo: “I wear the attire, check out the robe/ I'm fresh like a pope/ I'm doin' my dance on catamarans/ And you gotta cope/ I'm countin' my blessings, we ain't stressin'/ Just look at this glow.” I agree - her shine will never dull. -

KESHA Gag Order Kemosabe Records/RCA
Kesha is a versatile artist who can transcend different eras with her songs. "Tik Tok" will always stand the test of time in the pop music canon, but it's her ability to create addictive dance beats and emotional ballads with the same level of passion and creativity that truly makes her a superstar. Gag Order is yet another example of this. She may have become world-famous in 2011, but it's 2023 and she understood the assignment, going low-fi to beef up her hyper-pop approach. Standouts include “Living in My Head,” “The Drama,” “Something to Believe In” and “Hate Me Harder.” Music producer Rick Rubin worked with the woke artist to tap into her truly vulnerable self, something we already knew she could achieve. "Praying" still gives me chills to this day. Kesha has been a bold leader for the #MeToo movement and this album gives her another platform to explore truly dark themes, including depression and suicidal thoughts relating to her legal battle with former mentor Dr. Luke. Through everything Kesha has been dealt, she continues to triumph and create emotionally gutting music that makes us want to cry and dance at the same time. -

NIALL HORAN The Show Capitol Records/Neon Haze
Former One Direction member and current judge on The Voice, Niall Horan is coming off a high, winning his first season guiding musicians through the horrors of a talent show with teen angel Gina Miles. Horan has truly grown up since his boy band days. He infuses thoughtfulness and care into every song he writes and is vigilant in presenting a top-notch production. He’s a perfectionist with soul. Lead single “Heaven” isn’t religious, more so poetic with lyrics like “God only knows where this could go/ And even if our love starts to grow outta control/ And you and me go up in flames/ Heaven won't be the same.” He has a heavenly way of cooing out the chorus with true emotion, passion and musicality. His Irish accent only does him favors, giving his songs a rough edge to them as a man who has matured, but is still learning the ways of the world. Standouts include “Science,” “Must Be Love” and “Meltdown.” Horan's mellow musings and use of guitar almost paint a landscape for a backyard jam session or poetry slam. This album is a true reflection of his artistry and growth - that’s what makes you beautiful, Niall. -

ELEGANT WEAPONS Horns for a Halo Nuclear Blast Records
If a metal band were to produce a hardhitting, innovative and original record in 2023, Horns for a Halo by supergroup Elegant Weapons provides the perfect template. Comprised of guitarist Richie Faulkner (Judas Priest), bassist Dave Rimmer (Uriah Heep), drummer Christopher Williams (Accept), and vocalist Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, MSG), they boast an impressive CV. Described by Faulkner as “proto-power metal,” each song is brilliantly crafted; there are multiple rhythm and tempo changes, smart but succinct lyrics, and blistering but beautifullyarticulated guitar solos woven throughout. Trust me, there are no skip-tracks on this one (something I can rarely say) and the production is excellent. Check out the opener “Dead Man Walking,” “Dirty Pig," the title track, and the closer “Downfall Rising,” a crushing, masterful way to end an album. There are moments on the record that recall Hendrix, DIO and Rainbow but they never dabble for too long. This one is 55 minutes of pummeling and satisfying fury!

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND Walk Around the Moon RCA
It comes as no surprise to any DMB fan that this is a good album. Dave is a consistent and prolific writer with a very distinctive sound. What does come as a surprise is that this is a great album! Despite missing two of the original five founding members who each brought a uniqueness that defined the Dave Matthews Band sound, Walk Around The Moon is classic DMB and much more. The rhythm section of Stefan and Carter is rock solid - busy but never invasive. The sadly missing elements of Boyd on violin and LeRoi on saxophone are supplemented handily by additional harmonies, a horn section and loads of ear candy, from cellos, reverse tracking, keyboards, and wonderfully sparse solo Dave tracks. Each song could easily be a single. “After Everything” is three vibes in as many minutes. “Monsters” is a slow swim through a cloud. There’s something here for the super fans, new fans, and even those who say they don’t like Dave. -

BLAST FROM THE PAST
IRON MAIDEN
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Capitol Records
By 1988 Iron Maiden were established pros in the metal genre. Fresh off the legendary triumvirate of epic albums Number of the Beast , Piece of Mind and Powerslave , fans wondered how they could top three masterpieces. Rather than giving the fans what they wanted (or what they expected), the band released a progressive metal album called Seventh Son of a Seventh Son . Even the artwork signaled a change in direction for the band. Maiden’s terrifying mascot “Eddie” was still present, but looking slightly less menacing hovering over a tranquil semi-frozen pond with icebergs in the background. From the opening track, it’s clear the band intended to break new ground. The opening notes of keyboards and guitar synthesizers on “Moonchild” suggest a less metal direction. This is confirmed on the second song “Infinite Dreams,” a mellow, melodic soliloquy that, at least early on, bears
no resemblance whatsoever to rockers like “Where Eagles Dare.” I didn’t love it. In fact, it wasn’t until years later that fellow fans argued the merits of this record, forcing me to reevaluate it. After dozens of close listens, I came to recognize that Seventh Son may be Maiden’s greatest work, and “Infinite Dreams” one of their best songs. Sure, the album features the radio hit “Can I Play with Madness” (I hated that song in 1988), but, as my wife who cares nothing for metal pointed out when it played on Sirius, it is a GREAT song! It’s catchy, interesting, and it’s got a great hook! I now understand why it became a hit. This is the era of Iron Maiden that I go back to the most these days; It’s diverse, interesting, and totally unique in their catalog. It has moments of incredible melody and intricacy, thoughtfullycrafted storytelling, spellbinding guitar solos, outstanding songwriting, and basslines that only Steve Harris can play. As a touring band, Maiden were at their apogee - road warriors trying to keep themselves entertained by testing their limits and pushing boundaries. Seventh Son is a testament to just how great Iron Maiden were at that moment in their illustrious career.

BLUES WITH BRAGIN
KYLE CULKIN Shotgun Ridge Tonebucker Records
With a sound steeped in American roots music, guitarist Kyle Culkin serves up an authentic mix of country, rock and blues on Shotgun Ridge. Opener “My Baby’s Gone” features driving guitar that works well with lyrics about wanting his woman to return. “Trashy With You” boasts lyrics about wanting to give in to primal desires with a woman and throwing decorum to the wind. A distinct bluegrass vibe comes through on “Whole ‘Nutha Thing” as Albert Lee provides a guest appearance on guitar and backing vocals. Tight drumming from Adam Gust sets the tone on “Two More Bottles of Wine.” “Willin’” features laidback acoustic guitar from Culkin as he sings about facing difficulties in life.
Max MacLaury provides guest vocals and rhythm guitar on “Passing Through” while singing about witnessing difficult moments in history. Jamieson Trotter provides stellar piano playing on “Creepin’ In” while Jade McRae moves from background vocals to lead vocals. Culkin seems to channel John Mayer’s guitar playing on “Angels Get Their Way.” “Path of Least Resistance” features guest vocals from Ted Russell Kamp as he sings about sometimes taking a small step when the difficulties of life become too much to bear. Marty Rifkin plays great pedal steel guitar on the song. The album closes with “Sweet Lullaby,” a touching song about Culkin being raised by a single mom who did her best . -

JULY BEER REVIEWS
This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5
This BIG IPA has a clear golden pour, with almost no head. Intense tropical fruits on the nose, with a boozy warmth on the palate. Flavors of mango and stone fruit are dominant, with a mild bitterness on the finish. Very tasty, but at 9.9% ABV, be careful with this one.
JOHNNY FLETCHER - 4.5
No skimping on the hops with this fullbodied IPA - you may just hop till you drop, but you definitely won't complain. As advertised, this is a big beer that squeezes you tight with a nearly 10% ABV while conjuring up tasty notes of mango, pineapple, peach and citrus, creating a truly flavorful drinking experience. Normally I'm not much for hugs but here I'll make an exception.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a clear amber beer with a 9.9% ABV and tropical flavors that's very easy to drink. This is a very good Imperial IPA. It's very smooth and it has a sweet hops flavor. It's actually hard to notice the increased ABV, because there's no warming effect like most beers that are in that range.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5
This cerveza pours an almost transparent orange with just a very slight head that quickly dissipates. The essence of lime is strong on the nose. It is light on the palate with distinct flavors of salt and lime, similar to what you’d find on your favorite margarita. Without the harshness of a blanco tequila to balance it, I found the saltiness to be a bit overpowering. If you are a fan of the style, and don’t want to slice any limes, this is one to try on a hot day.
JOHNNY FLETCHER - 4
On the other end of the ABV spectrum, weighing in at just 3.5%, we have a classic Mexican drink that's perfect for the hot summer months. This classy Modelo features a lemon-lime flavor that's on-point with no artificialness. Yes, there's some graininess from the salt but overall it's a zesty affair that's more than conducive to sipping in the sun.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3
This is a slightly cloudy amber-colored beer with little carbonation and a low ABV. I'm not a big fan of salt in my beer and not a fan of lime, either, so this isn't up my alley but it's something different and intriguing in its own way.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5
This IPA pours a slightly hazy golden hue and has an ample white head. Aromas of peach and mangos are dominant on the nose. There is a slight bitterness on the palate with citrus flavors taking center stage. It finishes with a bit of fruit and only a slight bitterness. Mediumbodied and easy drinking, I’ll be looking for more of this.
JOHNNY FLETCHER - 4
New Belgium's flagship series of IPAs continues its formidable run with Danger Beach, offering up a delightful mix of flavors, including passion fruit, coconut, guava and sweet orange - all coming through with a dryness that accentuates the hops. But the bitterness, which does linger, is minimal, really. This is a very smooth IPA overall with serious drinkability despite the 7.1% ABV.
JABEZ
MARTINEZ - 4
This is a hazy straw-colored beer with decent carbonation. It has an ABV of 7.1% but you can't really tell. It's a very light IPA that seems like a more aggressive wheat beer. It does have a light mango flavor and other tropical fruit flavors but they're very subtle. A pretty decent beer overall.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25
This IPA pours a slightly hazy yellow with notes of pineapples and peaches. It is very light on the palate, with almost no bitterness. It has nice tropical flavors and is well-balanced. At 5% ABV, this is practically a sessional IPA, and a worthwhile find.
JOHNNY FLETCHER - 4.5
Last but certainly not least, here's an extremely refreshing tropical IPA with a standard ABV of 5%. Pours a hazy orange with a nice foamy head and enticing aromas generated by lemongrass, guava, passion fruit and grapefruit. The flavors are equally killer with tropical fruit juice, pineapple, lemon and
pine resin all making their presence known. It's summer in a can.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a cloudy straw-colored beer. Similar to New Belgium, it's very light to be called an IPA in my book. This is more like a pale ale with light flavors. It does have the juicy citrus notes as stated on the can but they're pretty light. I think if they amped up the flavor, I would like this one a little better.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Do you find it challenging to detach from the job at the end of the day?
A:In real life, it is challenging and emotionally draining for attorneys that work on intense and emotionally charged cases.
Indeed, attorneys often deal with distressing and sensitive information, and they may become personally invested in their clients' cases as they work towards achieving the best outcomes. This emotional involvement can make it difficult for them to detach from their work at the end of the day, leading to heightened stress levels and potential impacts on their well-being.
In addition, a stressed attorney can have less
than ideal interactions with coworkers, a spouse or significant other and even the attorney’s children. To manage these challenges, attorneys develop coping strategies. The key is to develop healthy coping mechanisms and not unhealthy ways of dealing with the stress. There are many examples, unfortunately, of attorneys that turn to alcohol, drugs, gambling or other addictions and poor choices to deal with the gauntlet of the practice of law.
Ideally, the attorney will instead separate their personal and professional lives. These strategies may include seeking support from colleagues, engaging in self-care activities, setting boundaries, and seeking professional
