A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Hola, tri-state. I begin this month's note with a Spanish greeting in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month which kicks off September 15. Sadly, though I not only took five years of said foreign language throughout high school and college but achieved good grades across the board, my recollection of words and phrases all these years later is hazy at best. But I refuse to take responsibility. Clearly, both the private and public school systems have failed me. Are you with me? Isn't that how things work these days? Always blame someone or something else - never admit to personal shortcomings. Oh, who am I kidding? This one's on me. Just like a typical American, I went full-on

native tongue after securing the necessary foreign language credits to graduate. If I were to visit Spain at this very moment, about all I'd be equipped to do is inquire as to the location of the bathroom - Dónde está el baño? (I know, there should be an upside down question mark at the beginning of that sentence but don't ask me how to make that happen in a Word document.) Moving on... The end of summer is just around the corner, yet the season's concert lineup remains hot. Some examples: Ryan Adams (9/5), Eddie Montgomery (9/9), Bruce Hornsby (9/12), Bert Kreischer (9/20), Chris Cagle (9/21), Here Come the Mummies (9/22), Hairball (9/23) and Justin Moore (9/28). Plus, get ready for the return of the popular St. Meinrad Rocks

Fest - two days of amazing performances by local and regional talent. Tell us more, por favor, is what I hear you saying; but space is limited, mi amigos. That's because our cover story is muy importante and deserves your full attention. Every September we feature the Top 20 Businesswomen in the Tri-State, shining a light on the leading ladies who're helping to shape the community and inspire all of us to do great things. Like re-learn a foreign language, perhaps? Es posible.

CHARITY EVENT BENEFITS AREA SENIORS AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

19TH ANNUAL SWIRCA BREWFEST

After a long run at historic Bosse Field, SWIRCA's enduring BrewFest set up camp on the west side of Evansville last year, finding a new home at the West Side Library Park on Franklin Street. Thankfully, not much else changed about the popular event which, for nearly 20 years now, has provided a great environment for an evening of craft beer, wine and spirit sampling. Hard to find a better way to spend three hours at the tail-end of summer than chilling with friends while enjoying a variety of refreshing adult beverages. And it's all for a great cause. Proceeds for BrewFest benefit SWIRCA - one of the tri-state's most respected non-profit organizations - and its mission to help individuals maintain their independence in the face of disabilities and aging.

In addition to the wide-ranging selection of craft beers, wines and spirits on tap, food from local vendors will be available to sample and purchase, and attendees can look forward to music and games, too. Not to mention good weather. Though our summer was a scorcher at times, mid-September nights are perfect for an outdoor happening, splitting the difference between too hot and too cold.

General admission tickets are $40 or you can upgrade to the VIP experience for $75. As always, safe rides will be available to ensure that everybody makes it home without incident.

HERE COME THE MUMMIES

"HARMONIC GRAVITY" TOUR

VICTORY THEATRE / SEPTEMBER 22 / 7 P.M.

FUNK-IFIED SUPERGROUP ON CREATING THE ULTIMATE RIFF, AVOIDING MUMMY FISTICUFFS IN THE STUDIO, THE JOY OF WINNING OVER CROWDS AND MORE

Known for an unrelenting live attack that's particularly impressive for a group of 5000-year-old "saucy specters," Here Come the Mummies bring the funk like nobody's business. Their incredibly tight grooves and tongue-in-cheek lyrics have made them a Bob & Tom Show favorite and garnered the band opening slots for legends like P-Funk, Al Green and Cheap Trick - even a performance at the Super Bowl Village. Indeed, such is the intensity of HCTM's stage show that even the most rhythm-challenged audiences feel compelled to dance their butts off, unable to stay seated for a second of this supergroup's outrageously electric set. Not bad for a band that was reportedly "cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh's daughter."

Last year's House Party album and companion live Blu-ray release proved that this band still has plenty of life left in their decaying corpses. As HCTM confess, yes, the Mummies are undoubtedly running a pyramid scheme - but the good kind.

NEWS4U AUGUST 2023 | UPCOMING EVENT

All will become crystal clear when you see this funk-ified supergroup get down and dirty at the Victory on September 22.

Despite not having bathed in literally ages, HCTM maintain a rabid female following. Explanation?

It's because, for centuries on end, our foul rags have had pheromones “baked in.” It can't be helped, and it ain’t broke, so…

Just how close has the band come to creating the ultimate riff? And how will you know when you do?

Close, we think, but we won’t really know until we hit it. When we do, we believe we’ll be transported post-haste to the afterlife, where we'll probably play music, seek out great local beer, and cavort with sexy ladies.

With so many band members - all with impressive musical pedigrees - how does the songwriting and arranging process work? Does it ever come to mummy fisticuffs?

There are minor skirmishes and squabbles, mainly over cookies and such. We never quarrel over music for some reason, though. Maybe it’s because we are channeling it all from a common Source - that’s with a capital “S”.

Is there ever a moment on stage or in the studio when you have to dial back the funk? Is it possible to over-funk or hit the funk ceiling? If there is a funk-ceiling, we haven’t hit it yet, but there IS a soulstaircase that we have fallen down once or twice, though.

While you often play to hordes of loyal HCTM fans, there are times when you are faced with the uninitiated - at festivals, etc. Do you enjoy the challenge of winning over a crowd - and can you sense the moment that you do?

We love watching blank stares and hostile scowls melt into joyous abandon. We can definitely tell the exact moment for each individual we see. There is nothing like it!

Considering the baby-making grooves of your music, is there often an uptick in each city's census numbers roughly nine months post-tour? There’s always love in the air when we’re around. Plus a whole lot else. Your nose knows.

12TH ANNUAL ST. MEINRAD ROCKS FEST

SEPTEMBER 22 & 23 / ST. MEINRAD PARK

FREE TRI-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL PROMISES TWO AMAZING DAYS OF LIVE MUSIC, FOOD AND FUN FOR ALL AGES

The St. Meinrad Rocks Fest returns to scenic St. Meinrad Park - just an hour northeast of Evansville - this month for two amazing days of live music on two stages, plus delicious food and much more. And as always, admission is FREE for all attendees (donations will be accepted for anyone wishing to donate to the cause, with all proceeds going towards the upcoming town museum). Event organizer Carol (Ubelhor) Troesch has once again put together a fantastic lineup of musical talent, booking some of the area's most exciting performers, including Friday evening stars Josh Merritt, That's What She Said, Michael & Fred and 7 Deadly Sins. Merritt is an authentic country singer with a down-home vibe; That's What She Said is a high-energy

cover band fronted by the charismatic TJ Tanoos and spunky Lakyn Kingrey; Michael & Fred are a multi-genre duo with singer-songwriter appeal; and 7 Deadly Sins live up to their name with a hard rock/metal attack. The music starts at 6:15 p.m.

Saturday the main acts get rolling at 12:45 p.m. with Megan & Isaac followed by Knights on Holiday, Vaguely Heeb, Saving Jordy, Ronnie Troesch, Silly Rules, Angel Rhodes and festival closer Dispel. Talk about a wide range of styles - attendees will be treated to a little rock, a little blues, a little country and more on this second day of the festival. And as is custom, both Friday and Saturday's performances will be preceded by a rendering of the "Star Spangled Banner"

courtesy of Phil the Excitement.

Other highlights include a Silly Safaris Animal Show, plus the talents of Dr. Popper Balloon Artist and Julie “The Face Paint Chick” - all sure to be a big hit with the kids. Adults, on the other hand, can enjoy a Beer Garden sponsored by Louie's Tavern. No matter your age, this festival will keep you entertained all weekend long!

SINGER

It's time once again to leave all our worries behind and let the good times roll with the nation's top arena rock tribute act, Hairball. Yes, the boys are back to clear the air and rock us senseless for a couple of hours with an absolutely killer set of songs by some of the greatest bands of all time: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Journey, KISS, Queen, Van Halen and many more - all performed with a rotating cast of spot-on singers and plenty of pyrotechnics. As

advertised, it's truly a bombastic celebration that will get your heart - and fists - pumping as you rock-out to all your favorite music from the 70s and 80s.

Hairball's Dave Moody - former vocalist for the revered AC/DC tribute band Thunderstruckwas brought on board back in late 2021. The engaging, raspy-voiced singer has slotted in perfectly, leaving fans, well, thunderstruck by his performances of "Back in Black" and classic

songs by Twisted Sister, Cinderella, Quiet Riot, KISS and more.

Moody kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater.

Last time we spoke, your beloved Pittsburgh Steelers had just suffered a controversial defeat in the NFL playoffs. How are you feeling about the team's prospects for the new season?

DAVE MOODY ON HAIRBALL'S REVAMPED PRODUCTION, MICK MARS BEING OUSTED FROM MÖTLEY CRÜE, THE GREATNESS OF THE 70S/80S BANDS AND MORE

Oh, we're gonna shock the world. I think that people are lazy journalists - they just repeat what they've heard and they don't know what they've seen. I'm telling you right now that the Steelers are going to be formidable. It's safe to say the team is solid all around and this is going to be an incredible year.

Any idea how many shows you've performed with Hairball to date?

God, no. It's probably approaching 300.

One of those shows was last September at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater where you'll be returning this month. I have to say that seeing Hairball in an open arena like that is the best

way to experience the band. It's hard to do what we do outdoors indoors because there's so much pyro and fire - and it's just so over the top. We do the best we can in every instance, in every scenario - we pull out all the stops where we can. But yeah, if you haven't seen us outside, you haven't seen the full pyro show. I tell people all the time that you've seen Hairball but you haven't seen Hairball. If you let us unleash all of our arsenal, our apocalyptic adventure that we have...it's just one of those things that you have to be in front of to witness. You have to see it to believe it. And then when you try to explain it, you're gonna say the same thing that everybody else does: you just have to be there. And not to give too much away, but we've literally revamped the set; we've literally revamped the stage show; we've literally flipped it. And we just unveiled it last night to great fanfare - and there were probably about four or five thousand people there and it just blew their minds. It was just so over the top. I think everybody's going to be more than pleased - it's going to be less predictable and so much bigger from a light show standpoint, from a visual standpoint. We've grown; we've gotten even bigger, if you can imagine.

As someone who's spent years singing the songs of AC/DC, what did you make of the period in 2016 when Axl Rose toured with the band due to vocalist Brian Johnson's potential hearing loss.

I'm going to give you an honest answer which nobody gives you anymore. I've just never been a fan of his [Axl's] from his activity that he did back in the day when he would throw stuff at fans or be late all the time. He had a chance to be a hero with Metallica and started a riot and destroyed an arena [in St. Louis, 1991] - you know, just caused a lot of heartache and problems. One rule in rock & roll - I mean,

literally, one rule: you can end up in rehab a hundred times or get a hundred divorces; you can lose everything and we're going to still love you - but when you disrespect the fans I think that's a cardinal sin. I think the fans are number one always. I think that the people that come to see you play are the most important commodity a band has. There's nothing above being respectful to the people that take the time to come and see you and buy your merch. I'm not saying that he [Axl] hasn't turned the corner [since then], but it's hard for me to forget that.

What's your take on Mötley Crüe seemingly pushing original guitarist Mick Mars out and bringing in John 5 as a replacement?

I think Mick Mars is the only reason why they were any good or had any modicum of success. I think it's unfortunate; it's just unfortunate. Because Mick was so beloved - or is, not was. No need to speak of him in the past tense because he's still very much with us. I'm just disappointed. You know, when they came back after the contract thing [2014, when they signed a pledge saying they wouldn't tour again]... again, that's a disrespect to the fans. I don't believe in that. John 5 is stellar, by the way; he didn't do anything wrong.

We recently had four Led Zeppelin tribute acts come through our area in the span of 90 days. The continuing impact of bands from the 70s and 80s is pretty mind-blowing - goes a long way in explaining why Hairball has been such a success.

I tell people all the time that we lived in the time of Mozart - which would be Eddie Van Halen; and we lived in the time of Bach - which would be Iron Maiden; we lived in the time of, you know, Beethoven - which would be Led Zeppelin; we lived in the time of all these great, great, great, phenomenal artists. When a hundred years pass there's going to be people that say, man, people got to watch them live.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE SONG

Inaugural

WESSELMAN WOODS / SEPTEMBER 30

2 P.M. (GATES OPEN)

Held annually at Garvin Park (with a couple exceptions) beginning in 2014, ParksFest, a communitybased musical gathering, served as a major highlight of Evansville's outdoor event season. But while the festival achieved great success, co-organizer Zach Evans was itching to try something a little different - something a little more intimate. "I wanted to create a festival that showcased the power of a song and the strength of songwriters that didn't put it through the myopic lens of one genre or one way of performing," he says. His brainstorming led to For the Sake of the Song, a muchanticipated inaugural event featuring local, regional and national talent playing live and discussing the backstories behind a wide range of material - folk, country, indie rock, hiphop, reggae, hard rock, dream pop, ambient electronic music and more.

Against the backdrop of scenic Wesselman Woods, this free music festival will be headlined by the Watson Twins, daughters of the late University of Evansville basketball coach Bobby Watson. The two have released several albums, including a collaboration with Jenny Lewis on her debut album Rabbit Fur Coat, and have performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. They'll be supported by a terrific lineup of musicians (see below) and attendees can enjoy food trucks and a beer garden by Bokeh Lounge as they take in the tunes.

free music festival puts the focus squarely on the art of songwriting

Theresa Caputo

Theresa Caputo is the first one to admit that what she does is kinda crazy. Well known as the "Long Island Medium"also the title of her very successful show that ran from 2011 to 2019 on TLC - the entertainingly dramatic, warm-hearted New Yorker has been communicating with the dead for decades. And literally changing lives. Guided by "Spirit," as she calls her, Caputo gives readings, and ultimately closure, to people who have lost loved ones, connecting the physical world with the spiritual realm. Through this "amazing gift from God," the New York Times bestselling author has healed many, many souls, a journey that's inspired several popular books, including 2020's Good Mourning. She also connects with fans via her popular podcast, Hey Spirit, conducting Q&As with people all over the world.

How do you go about deciding which client stories to include in your books?

You know, it's interesting. When I sit and talk with "her," what I like to call the "spirit writer" -

not the "ghost writer" - it's amazing how I get brought back to certain readings. It's almost like I'm channeling when I'm writing my books as well. For instance, I got a flash of an old client from Ohio whose son died on the subway tracks when he was in New York. They came and had an experience on Long Island Medium and they come to all my shows whenever I'm in the area. I get to see them and we talk about him - it's like, 'Oh my god, I would love to share your story for my book.' So that's how it happens.

While your TLC show Long Island Medium certainly had its serious moments, it was really like a sitcom at times.

Listen, of course it was. That's the thing - I'm just who I am, and I don't know anything different. That's why the show was so successful and why people loved it - because it was real. What's funny is that I'm still friends with a lot of my childhood friends and I still see them. One of them in particular, Darren, is a pilot and he meets so many people. He's like, 'You have no idea how many people ask if I know you when they find out where I'm from.' And they're always like, 'There's no way she's like that.' And he always says, 'You know what, you're right. She's even more dramatic.'

[laughs]

Do you prepare any differently for your live readings?

The way you'll see me when I walk into the Victory on October 5 will be just like how I walk into any reading. I treat all of them the same. Whether I'm doing a private reading or a group of 20 people or 5000, I can only channel so many souls in a certain period of time. It's the same preparation. I find that in large groups, Spirit is more fun and more playful because we have a lot of things that we have to cover. Look, these are a lot of heavy messages that we hear and that's what I find on tour - that there are a lot of tragedies. People don't realize it, and you need levity for that. And Spirit does a phenomenal job. For the live show, I come out on stage and do a quick speech and then Spirit just guides me around the theatre. I'm not on the stage - I'm down in the crowd in front of people just as if we were all sitting in a living room. I walk right up to you - I stop and talk to whoever I need to speak to. Sometimes I spend a lot of time in the back of the theatre or up in the balcony - it's not just people in the front rows. I have no idea what's going to happen.

Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure

I have been all about Greek yogurt lately. It is such an easy way to get a healthy serving of protein, plus my gut benefits from all the good bacteria. I eat yogurt in a variety of ways, but this is a fall favorite. I always have pouches of different purees on hand for my kids. One day the thought came to me of adding one to my yogurt to enhance the flavor without added refined sugar. It was delicious and sparked this recipe idea!

KYLE PAISLEY PRIVATE SUMMER

MEMBERS OF EVANSVILLE'S ALPHA INCIDENT

JOIN FORCES WITH MUSICIAN FRIENDS FOR ROCK/METAL SIDE PROJECT, RELEASE "MIND ERASER" WITH EP TO FOLLOW

Responsible for some of the best metal releases in the tri-state over the last several years, including 2022's prog masterpiece Sundowner, the Alpha Incident - comprising vocalist Mike Morrow, guitarists Daniel Wade and Patrick Casey, bassist Ellery Cochrane and drummer Thomas Van Bibber - have definitely made a name for themselves. Lately the band has been on a bit of a hiatus, so Wade took the opportunity to revisit a group of songs he'd written some time ago - songs with a more straight ahead rock/metal approach. Intended as a solo venture, the project soon expanded in scope. At one stage, reportedly, every AI member except Van Bibber came on board, but after a bit of re-shuffling the lineup solidified to include Morrow, bassist Dan Welman, Aegaeon's Sebastian Brown on guitar and drummer Jason Rager of Xanderwolf.

Wade is quick to point out that while the initial song ideas for the project were mainly his, all the members have contributed creatively, helping to coalesce the sound of Private Summer as heard on the debut single, "Mind Eraser," mixed and mastered by Steve Tyner. "We're trying to keep things shorter with stricter structures than Alpha Incident - and we're always trying to have a big, catchy chorus," he explains. True to form, this first taste of the band's upcoming EP is a 4/4 rocker - still plenty heavy but never shying away from melody. Morrow, as ever, effortlessly ping-pongs from fullthroated screaming to crystal clear vocals, matching the mood of the music at every turn.

Catch Private Summer and Alpha Incident at Lamasco Bar & Grill on September 29. "Mind Eraser" is available on major streaming platforms.

TRI-STATE SINGER-SONGWRITER DROPS

JAZZ-INFLUENCED "I GOT YOU BOO" IN COLLABORATION WITH MONTE SKELTON

Earlier this year, guitarist Kyle Paisley reemerged on the local music scene via two excellent singles, "Running on Empty" and "Love Outside" - both recorded with producer Stephen Horning who brought a distinct eighties vibe to the mix, adding in layers of synthesizer to sweeten the sound. It was a move that paid dividends for Paisley, expanding the Prince-meets-John Mayer style of previous recordings and setting the stage for an exciting collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Monte Skelton on the jazz-influenced "I Got You Boo," the third and final track to drop in 2023 before the planned release of a compilation album.

According to Paisley, the decision to reach out to Skelton - a good friend now for over a decade - was prompted by the passing of his father. "After I came back from the San Francisco Bay area for my dad's funeral, I wanted to put a smooth jazz touch to the song I was working on in honor of him - he loved that stuff," he says. "I knew exactly who to call and [Monte] responded almost immediately." Indeed, Skelton's exhilarating horn soloing throughout "I Got You Boo" proves that Paisley made the right call. Once again Horning injects tasteful electronic touches to the production, including some sugary arpeggios that seemingly float over the addictive four chord guitar progression. Lyrically, Paisley envisions a romantic evening with a special someone: "And we can drink and dance all night to this music that's so fine/ I got you boo."

"I Got You Boo" is available on major streaming platforms. For more info, follow Kyle Paisley on Facebook.

LINDSEY

on the scene

WITH LINDSEY WILLIAMS

Tri-state recording artist and live performer presents part five in a series of discussions on the state of the local music scene

All of my life as a musician, I have been driven to create and experiment. From five years old with a tenor ukulele and kazoo through my phase at 12 with a dual cassette "boom box” that I used to do overdubs, I was compelled to play. From playing oboe in my junior high band to the guitars of the present, I have always yearned to create. I've written and recorded dozens of songs and have countless ideas memoed that I have yet to complete. However, I was always bothered by one thing about my passion; my selfish enjoyment is what fueled it. I felt I was serving myself alone, seeking attention or praise by choosing music over what I considered more noble professions like education, medicine, or finance.

"I felt this way for years, like a phony artist cheating the struggle by playing cover songs, prioritizing money and popularity over authenticity and integrity."

I felt this way for years, like a phony artist cheating the struggle by playing cover songs, prioritizing money and popularity over authenticity and integrity. Two things happened that changed my view: COVID and sobriety. COVID taught me how important music, especially live music, is to our collective sanity. Sobriety taught me to trust myself and try harder. It's been three years since the world came to a halt (essential workers excepted) and nearly one year since my addiction did. These two things gave me a vital reset in perspective that sent my musical passions off like a phoenix. It is my deepest desire to instill this fire in you! There is so much to discover and experience in song form. The shared experiences that make new music relatable are only possible when we take chances and show up and tune in. I have two things to offer this month. I hope you will discover these and more. BE THE SCENE!!!

Look for me at Bokeh Lounge on September 14, kicking off a monthly original artist showcase. I will host, chat and jam with

some of your local creators. This month will feature Cage Willis and possibly one more guest TBD. We want to keep this going and have songwriters of all genres each month.

This month's big showcase will be September 30 in Wesselman Woods at Odonata Lake. Check out "For the Sake of the Song" on Facebook or visit sakeofthesong.com. It's FREE and starts at 2 p.m. I'm so excited to be a part of this. Five bands and many songwriters will be performing.

As a testament to the power of the song, I will share this tribute with you. My friend, Shane Carey, passed away unexpectedly on the day of this writing. He made me feel important and heard. He always wanted original songs and once told me that "Last Song," one of my own, was one of his favorite songs of all time. There is no better gift Shane could have given me than that. Music matters. We're making more all the time. Join us. You might find your own new favorite. Thank you for the love, Shane. The "Last Song" will forever be for you.

THE ROCK & METAL PROFS

WITH MATT ALSCHBACH & DR. COURT LEWIS

Associate professors at Owensboro Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, respectively, Alschbach and Lewis host the popular podcast The Rock & Metal Profs: The History & Philosophy of Rock & Metal. Now they're bringing their keen insights to the pages of News 4U with a monthly deep dive into some of the best bands of the rock/metal genre and thoughts on music in general.

ROCKING AND REVELING IN THE OBSCURE

We often delight in artists that never made it big. There are so many great bands that, for one reason or another, never gained critical acclaim nor commercial success. There is something beautifully self-centered about discovering a great band or album that few people know about. It is ours to celebrate, to share with or withhold from others, and to relish our good fortune. As a selfless act, we thought it would be fun to share with our readers some of the great bands that should have been massive, but the music industry proved a cruel mistress.

In 2001 Matt saw New Jersey band Pete open a show in a small venue in San Diego, and marveled at how original and talented they were. Their self-titled debut album is a masterpiece, showcasing a band that honed their craft for some time prior to recording. With outstanding musicianship, thoughtful lyrics, and powerful vocals, they were so good they were showcased on HBO’s Reverb. Sadly, Pete had a couple strikes against them. They were dropped by Atlantic Records, and then came the name change. When their second album was released under the moniker Sonicult, few fans made the connection. It’s truly a shame,

as they had all the makings of a breakout act.

For Court, growing up in North Mississippi, bands like Drivin’ N' Cryin’, Five-Eight, and Dash Rip Rock were the holy grail of small town bands living the dream, but time told a different story. Drivin’ N' Cryin’ had success in the early 90s, and Dash Rip Rock continue to play, but they have mostly been forgotten by casual rock enthusiasts. Each band explored new avenues of southern-inspired rock, and their albums continue to be great listens.

After a brief stint with Ozzy Osbourne in the mid-eighties, guitarist Jake E. Lee formed Badlands and released a trio of albums. The guitar work on these records eclipses anything that Lee did previously with Ozzy. We get an unrestrained and furious guitar attack - a beautiful and blistering combination of hard rock, gritty blues, wicked groove, and brilliant songwriting. Yet another former Ozzy guitarist, Joe

Holmes released the self-titled debut album Farmikos in 2015. This is, in our opinion, one of the best albums of the last decade. It is perfection from start to finish, and it is a tragedy that so few people know about Holmes and his band. The good news is that you don’t have to miss out! Holmes’ second album is set to be released in early 2024, and if the samples we’ve heard on his Facebook page are any indication, it’s going to be just as good as the debut. Keep an eye out for that one!

UE alum bringing set pieces to life

for Tony Award-winning Children's Theatre Company

"We basically get the skeleton and then put the makeup on it," explains Lizzie Tredinnick, breaking down in simple terms the job of a scenic artist. The multitalented University of Evansville alum's career in theater, while still in its infancy, has taken her to several big cities to work on a number of big productions - and ultimately right back to where it all began in Minneapolis. Life tends to come full circle, after all. Tredinnick spent her early childhood there before the family moved camp to Madison, Wisconsin. But no matter the environment, a love of art remained constant in the home. "As kids we would always be doing some fun, crafty thing," she says. High school saw Tredinnick get involved in theater; she started putting all that youth-inspired creativity to use by painting sets and "kind of took over that department junior and senior year." That's when a light bulb went off. "From there I realized that a theater degree was an actual real degree - as well as having jobs in that field," she says, laughing at her teenage naiveté.

When the time came to find a good school for theater, the University of Evansville

kept coming up in conversation; it met Tredinnick's interest in a small campus and carried a sterling reputation. She took a tour and was sold, signing on for a degree in theater design, but in reality "I ended up just painting - realized I didn't want to create the idea, I wanted to execute the idea. Since there are so many different [set] designs [for a production] you get to do so many different things, to challenge your brain going from something super realistic to super big colors to dingy and aged." Post-college, Tredinnick, flush with a UE education and experience from multiple internships, headed to the Big Apple, networking to land freelance positions, including as a props supervisor for a production of "Hello Dolly". Things were really humming - and then COVID hit.

Re-calibrating, Tredinnick next headed to Chicago, taking a job with EverGreene Architectural Arts; she later worked on two seasons of the History Channel's Food That Built America docudrama. And while a return to New York seemed imminent, Tredinnick couldn't shake the urge to drive again, to own a car - something tough to pull off in a big city. So when she got wind of a job opening at the Tony Award-

winning Children's Theatre Company in her hometown of Minneapolis, there was little hesitation. Spoiler alert: Tredinnick nailed the interview, coming on board for the 2022-23 season as an assistant scenic artist, painting sets for such crowd-pleasing musicals as "An American Tail". To tie a bow on the whole thing, she also secured a summer position with the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico. (Not to worry, Tredinnick got the car, too - a Volkswagen Taos - for the lengthy road trips back and forth.)

Gearing up for the new season at Children's Theatre Company, Tredinnick is looking forward to working on a variety of exciting productions, including "Cookin'" (9/1210/22) and "Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress" (10/10-11/19). To provide some scope, CTC draws more than 250,000 people annually and has developed more than 200 new works to date. It's the real deal and exactly where Tredinnick needs to be. Seems she's content to stay put for awhileapart from those summer getaways.

BAD AT EXISTING

Madisen Kuhn has consistently remained one of my favorite modern poets since her first book, Eighteen Years. A large part of my own writing has been inspired by Kuhn’s books. I was so excited when I learned she was releasing Bad at Existing because I have never been as immersed and touched by a piece of modern writing like I have when I read her work.

This book is exactly what I needed as a 26-year-old woman trying to learn how to be an adult, navigating love, friendships, family, and self. It’s hard for me to pick just one poem that resonated with me, and my Goodreads notes reflect that. There are 160 poems within the collection and I can almost guarantee that at least one of them will hit home with at least one of you.

As someone who has always struggled with feeling less than perfect (even though there isn’t one person out there who is perfect), these poems remind me that it’s okay to just simply exist and that we all face intrapersonal struggles in our lives, regardless of who we are or where we came from.

Kuhn knows how to connect with her readers in a way that I’ve never personally experienced but strive for in my own work. Her fourth book is everything I was hoping for and expecting, and she did not disappoint. I am sitting (im)patiently waiting for her fifth book, and hoping there will be one for me to add to my collection. -

SCREEN TIME WITH

MARISA PATWA

September movie offerings feature an Agatha Christie-based whodunit, a take on the

A HAUNTING IN VENICE

Kenneth Branaugh's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, is back for a third time on the silver screen. Now, he is in Venice, Italy, solving the murder of a guest at a Halloween séance he was attending at a haunted palazzo. The plot is based on the 1969 Agatha Christie novel Hallowe’en Party and features a wickedly delicious ensemble cast - from Michelle Yeough as a powerful psychic to Tina Fey playing an old friend of Poirot’s, who hires him to help discredit her powers. Kelly Reilly, Jamie Doran, Kyle Allen and Ali Khan also star. Poirot is a no-nonsense man who doesn't believe in the paranormal, but even his sensibilities are tested when they're all locked in together on a dark, stormy night. Per the usual, he won’t let anyone leave until the murderer is caught. This time, though, he has to discern whether or not the killer is a supernatural entity or one of the guests. In theaters 9/15

DUMB MONEY

The GameStop short squeeze surprised and riveted the entire nation in 2021, so why not make a book and a movie about it? This film reflects the real events of a group of regular investors who banded together on the Reddit page r/WallStreetBets to encourage people to invest in GameStop. This caused a massive financial loss for several big hedge funds who had bet the stock would drop. It also takes a page from the book Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, which too chronicles this riveting story. Paul Dano stars as Keith Gill, a financial analyst who is predominately credited with instigating the squeeze with his viral YouTube videos. Keith ends up turning a $53,000 investment into one worth close to $50 million, majorly pissing off a slew of hedge fund managers along the way. The great supporting cast includes Shailene Woodley, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Vincent D'Onofrio, Seth Rogen and Nick Offerman. In theaters 9/22

FAIR PLAY

Two secret office lovers working at a cutthroat hedge fund have their personal and professional lives tested when one of them gets a promotion over the other in Fair Play. The film is being touted as a sexy thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat and I, for one, can’t wait to grab a chair. Phoebe Dyenvor is proving she is more than the shimmering diamond of Bridgerton, taking the sharp edges of her jewel into this new role. Phoebe plays newly engaged Emily, who to her own surprise, is elevated to a manager position over her fiancé Luke, played by Alden Ehrenreich. What ensues next is a game of cat and mouse, with the company as the intoxicating cheese. Resident movie villain Eddie Marsan chills as the stone cold boss who Luke desperately wants to receive validation from. Will the couple survive turmoil in the workforce and save their burgeoning relationship? In select theaters 9/29 & Netflix 10/13

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE

REX HEUERMANN: THE LONG ISLAND SERIAL KILLER

The last 10 months have been off the charts in the realm of true crime. We've seen Bryan Kohberger arrested for the quadruple homicide of the Idaho college students; Alex Murdaugh convicted and sentenced for the murders of his wife and son; Chad Doermann taken into custody for the killings of his three young boys; and perhaps the biggest story of all, the apparent unveiling of the "Long Island Serial Killer." Not surprisingly, the latter development has captivated the public and dominated the headlines ever since 59-year-old architect Rex Heuermann was arrested on July 13 in connection with the infamous Gilgo Beach murders on New York's Long Island, a case that investigators had been tracking for many years. Married with two children, the suspect was in plain sight the whole time, living a double life that only a true sociopath could pull off.

To the outside world, Heuermann maintained a professional demeanor; however, his internal dialogue was incredibly disturbing - and so were his internet searches, including deep dives for sadistic, torture-related pornography and graphic images of young girls and children. Yet, his wife and kids reportedly had no clue that the patriarch of the family spent much of his spare time trolling for victims. Heuermann made a habit of seeking out sex workers as easy targets; after binding, assaulting and killing them, he would then dump their bodies along Gilgo Beach. At least three of these women - the remains of 11 bodies in

all were eventually discovered in the area - have now been connected to Heuermann in various ways. Cell phone data and the DNA from a pizza crust provided the biggest breaks in the case, but his truck was also identified by a witness back in 2010. The fact that investigators had a very important piece of the puzzle more than a decade before Heuermann's arrest has frustrated the families of the victims - many of whom suffered the indignation of this monster calling and taunting them after murdering their loved ones.

It's widely believed that Heuermann is responsible for at least one more Gilgo Beach killing - if not all 11. Beyond that, he may even be tied to bodies found in Las Vegas where he reportedly owned a luxury timeshare condo. The modus operandi appears to be different in some of these murders, though killers are known to adapt and evolve, often out of necessity. Long story short, chances are good that we've just scratched the surface of Heuermann's depravity - as sad as that is for all involved.

SLY & COOPER

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

After purchasing a house a couple of years ago and finding herself no longer beholden to the rules of a landlord, Evansville's Becky Nichols admits that she "went a little buck wild" - but not in the partying sense. Instead, the freedom of home ownership meant that Nichols and her husband could rescue even more animals, adding to their menagerie of furry friends - 14 in all. The couple has quite the mix of pets sharing the living space, including multiple mice, a rat, a hedgehog, two dogs and seven (yes, seven) ferrets. Two of the latter bunch, brothers Sly and Cooper,

were adopted from the VHS almost seven years ago; the cute little critters were about two at the time which means they've surpassed the normal lifespan of a ferret - thanks in large part to the love and care the siblings have received. "Sly and Cooper are both still healthy and spry," Nichols notes, adding that she recently took the ferrets to the VHS for a visit so the staff could see just how well they're doing, even at an advanced age.

While cats and dogs are the clearly the most popular pets in America, Nichols gushes over the joy of ferret ownership, describing the

experience

as "so much fun."

"A ferret is kind of like a cat but without the attitude - they love to be held like a baby, to give kisses and bond with their owners," she says. "But when you put them down, they turn into free-range two-year-olds, bouncing around and having a good old time. It's hilarious." Wisely, Nichols and her husband have a separate room where their seven ferrets can play till they wear themselves out - though there is occasional interaction with the couple's two dogs when Sly and Cooper and company are allowed to roam the common areas of the home. According to Nichols, the Chihuahua pays little mind but their larger dog is best buds with the tiniest ferret; it's a real Mutt & Jeff scenario, cute as can be.

Speaking of cute, on the weekends

Nichols and her husband bring all their animals outside so they can enjoy the fresh air - and the neighborhood kids can watch the "controlled chaos" of the 14 rescues hanging out together. It must surely be a sight to see and an example for other tri-state pet owners to follow.

AS I TYPE THIS...

with Barold Hume

Sure wish I had better news to share on the political front, but things are bleak, folks. As I type this, former President Trump is heading towards a fourth indictment (Guinness Book of World Records, anyone?) for attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia, while President Biden is facing possible impeachment down the line in connection with the antics of wild child Hunter. Yet, these two kooky grandpas remain the 2024 frontrunners - by wide margins, no less. Has there been a nuttier time in the nation's history, politically speaking? Quite possibly. Granted, I never saw the musical "Hamilton" but I still couldn't escape that obnoxious "My Shot" song (everyone else loved it, apparently) which references the infamous gun duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. I suppose that was the height of nuttiness between political foes. Still, we're inching ever closer... Off the top of my head I can't recall if DEFCON 3 is worse than DEFCON 2 or vice-versa; but we're hovering somewhere between. The solution? There is none, as far as I can tell; however, a step in the right direction would be to start from scratch. Imagine if both

Biden and Trump were unable to run - for whatever reasons, be it legal, health or otherwise. From what I can tell - and it's still early in the game, of course - both parties seem to have at least a couple of rational, even youthful, individuals eager to lead the country. Might be nice to bring in some fresh blood, eh?

Speaking of duels, I'm extremely saddened to hear that the proposed Musk-Zuckerberg battle royale seems to be off. The latter, as I type this, is accusing the former of not being serious about the cage match between these two oddball billionaires. Keep in mind this was meant to be a charitable event. And yet they still couldn't come to terms on the specifics of the fight. If that's not a microcosm of all that's wrong with this country, I don't know what is. Sounds suspiciously like our current political situation... By the way, I couldn't help but notice that lots of people around the country cheered the exit of the outspoken US women's soccer team from the World Cup. Most of us, it's safe to say, watch sports to get away from daily life; we

don't want to hear the players complain about anything - just score, score, score for our team. Same goes for entertainers. Just entertain us, please. Remember back in 2003 when the Dixie Chicks dared to speak their minds about President Bush and the looming invasion of Iraq? Yikes. Did not go well for the gals. While I can certainly appreciate the viewpoint that performers should simply perform and leave their opinions backstage (or in the locker room if you're an athlete) it's still America and all. You should be free to speak your mind - just keep the pistols at home so you don't wind up like Hamilton.

YET, THESE TWO KOOKY GRANDPAS REMAIN THE 2024 FRONTRUNNERS - BY WIDE MARGINS, NO LESS. HAS THERE BEEN A NUTTIER TIME IN THE NATION'S HISTORY, POLITICALLY SPEAKING?

STAIRMASTER

Before I get things rolling with this month's column, allow me to throw some shade at Edward Jones. Yes, the investment people. Not for financial reasons of any sort. No, I'm taking aim squarely at the company's current commercial running on the telly. See, a few issues ago I totally went off on the over-usage of the phrase "We got this!" - noting how it's become a clichéd rallying cry on the big and small screens. Damned if I didn't settle into my TV chair for an afternoon of Ancient Aliens the other day when a new EJ promo promptly accosted me with numerous vignettes of couples and families assuring each other "We got this!" in relation to making some big financial decision or something. With the help of Edward Jones, naturally. I became visibly angry by the end of the clip - which is to say that my left eyebrow began twitching even more than usual. I've since been tasked with sitting through this godforsaken

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD...

with Johnny Fletcher

commercial several more times - apparently the effort required to change the channel has outweighed my outrage. But I'm not happy about it, I promise you. In fact, both of my eyebrows are dancing in tandem as I type this (shout-out to my main man, Barold).

Now on to the main attraction... Devoted readers of mine will recall that I injured myself while sleeping some months back. Again, no joke. It was a humbling experience that resulted in many weeks of back pain and served to remind me that Father Time waits for no one. Upon recovering, I enjoyed a brief period of good health and fitness - I even got back out and played table tennis again with other area nerds in a local pole barn. It was at one of those recent evenings of friendly competition that the club's 91-year-old player (not a misprint) kindly asked if I was finally over my back issue. I replied, "Yes, thank you - I'm just trying to stay in one piece until the half

marathon race at the end of September." Well, I'm sure you know where this is all heading. The very next morning I walked out the back door of my house and onto the small deck outside before attempting to descend the staircase that leads to the patio area. I say "attempting" because I somehow missed the first step and then fell backwards, slamming my back against the wooden edges and then sliding down to the bottom quite painfully as if doing the luge. Ouch. I laid there for several minutes, in utter disbelief at what had just transpired. Reminded me of a Seinfeld episode where Elaine bites down on her fork the wrong way and Jerry responds (with typical lack of compassion), "Boy, it's hard to believe with so much biting experience a person could still make a mistake like that." I mean, how many sets of stairs have I gone down in 53 years? To quote myself yet again, maybe I'm just getting old.

IT WAS AT ONE OF THOSE RECENT EVENINGS OF FRIENDLY COMPETITION THAT THE CLUB'S 91-YEAR-OLD PLAYER (NOT A MISPRINT) KINDLY ASKED IF I WAS FINALLY OVER MY BACK ISSUE.

Musician. Writer. Man about town. Freddie Bourne has his finger on the pulse of the tri-state, and he's here's to tackle your questions about life, love and other stuff. No matter the subject, he's got a take on it - whether you want to hear it or not.

DON'T WISH TO GET TOO PERSONAL, BUT HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRIM YOUR NOSE HAIR? ASKING FOR A FRIEND.

Dear Cynthia My Lovely Fiancée, If it’s bothering you, I’ll start doing it.

REPORTEDLY, MOST YOUNG PEOPLE

CAN'T NAME THE THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT. ARE YOU ONE OF THEM?

Dear Prez Joey B, I got you covered, man: The Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

IF YOU WERE TO MAKE IT BIG AS A SINGER-SONGWRITER, HOW QUICKLY WOULD FAME GO TO YOUR HEAD?

AS A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE, GREAT SINEAD O'CONNOR, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRACK OF HERS?

Dear Real Person (?) Asking Insightful Question (!), Right. So, I came across Sinead O'Connor at first through Lauren Talbot on the fourth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar , where the theme was “Die größten Hits der 80er und 90er.” And because she did a cover of Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like A Bird” for the theme show “Die größten Hits aller Zeiten,” I knew she liked picking questionable songs. She performed Sinead’s version of a Prince song (look it up) “Nothing Compares 2 U” and I memorized. Then I heard Sinead’s version for the first time at age 12 in my loft bedroom that had no A/C and realized that Lauren sucked.

Dear All My Ex-Girlfriends Except the Ones I’m Cool With,

I guess you saw I’m now verified on Facebook and Instagram. About time they came to their senses.

My answer is "Lay Your Head Down."

I WENT TO SEE THE BARBIE MOVIE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO AND WAS SHOCKED TO FIND RYAN GOSLING STARRING IN THE ROLE OF "KEN" RATHER THAN YOU. WHAT HAPPENED?

Dear Margot,

I really appreciate you reaching out in a monthly magazine in the middle of the bumblef*ck Midwest so I can finally address the rumors about what happened regarding my initial involvement with the film. I have been waiting for AOL.com to get back to me about my inquiry, but you finally gave me a platform to answer this head-on. Sadly, however, I have run out of room...

SEPTEMBER MUSIC REVIEWS

POST MALONE Austin Mercury/Republic Records

Fresh off a banging tour in support of 2022's Twelve Carat Toothache, where he survived falling through a hole on stage and breaking his ribs, Post Malone is back, baby. (Sidebar: I was at that St. Louis concert when this accident happened and he was so sweet and kind to emerge like a stoner angel from the ashes when he came back on to perform more songs.) On his fifth studio album, the trap-pop singer has produced some of his most mature and reflective music yet. Lead single “Chemicals” is lyrically raw, detailing his struggles with drug addiction, but it's balanced with bountiful beats that sound like pure sunshine. Posty could have easily made this one of his iconic slowed-down ballads. Bravely, he did something unexpected and it has paid off. “Don’t Understand” is as equally and surprisingly beautiful, with a Bob Dylan-esque guitar strum playing off the truly poetic lyrics. Post Malone is one of the most talented and versatile artists of our generation. He can be funny and childlike in his love for video games and the endless breadsticks at Olive Garden, and at the drop of a hat, inspire countless fans who’ve struggled with their own issues to seek help. The way he is so unabashedly himself is evident in his art. And it’s breathtaking - Marisa Patwa

TRAVIS SCOTT Utopia Cactus Jack/Epic Records

Rapper Travis Scott surrounds himself with a tight-knit team and that camaraderie pays off on his fifth studio effort, featuring guest appearances by Beyoncé, Drake, Kid Cudi, Future, SZA, 21 Savage, Swae Lee, the Weeknd, Bad Bunny and Dave Chapelle. This album has been a long time coming, too, his first since the tragedy at the 2021 Astroworld concert when 10 people lost their lives in a horrific crowd surge. Scott has promoted Utopia as an extension of psychedelic pop and the production is truly exquisite and unique. “Delresto (Echoes)" features Queen Bey herself and it slaps. Travis was vocal about the experimental instrumentals he made and it's evident in this song, which transports you to a different reality. Scott and Drake seamlessly transition to and from each other's verses in “Meltdown,” while “God’s Country” sounds like if Once Upon A Time in Hollywood took a molly. My favorite, “LOOOVE” with Kid Cudi, sounds like a hiphop beat aliens would be partying to near Pluto. Someone get me a spacesuit right quick.-

ANNE-MARIE Unhealthy Asylum Records

British pop singer Anne-Marie is doling out hits again on her third studio album, Unhealthy. The lead track of the same name pulls in countrypop heavyweight Shania Twain and it's such a wondrous collaboration between the older and newer generations. I highly recommend watching the two as outlaw country women from the olden days getting into bar fights and riding stallions in the wild, Wild West-style music video. “Psycho” is just as addictive as you’d think. AnneMarie is a clever wordsmith with fun beats and her ability to not take herself too seriously while still releasing such well-produced tracks is refreshing. Rapper Aitch is the perfect song partner for the song, too, delivering just as much lyrically as she gives. They perform equally as well as a pair of young partners going through turmoil when Anne-Marie finds out he is cheating in the music video and goes a little cuckoo. It's playful and makes you giggle while still nodding your head to the rhythm, smiling. “You & Me” features Khalid in a gorgeous duet about trying to save a failing relationship. This gripping, tear-inducing song just proves her incredible range. Listening to her will make you healthy. -

CREEP SHOW Yawning Abyss Bella Union

Since splitting with longtime Cabaret Voltaire bandmate Richard Kirk (R.I.P.) back in the mid90's, UK post-punk legend Stephen Mallinder has continued to pursue various electronic avenues, both as a solo artist and as a member of Wrangler, a synthetic trio further expanding the CV playbook on such stellar releases as 2014's LA Spark and 2020's A Situation. In between those two albums, Mallinder and fellow Wranglers Benge and Phil Winter teamed up with American singer-songwriter John Grant to form Creep Show, a seemingly one-off side project. Mr. Dynamite, their 2018 collaboration, had its moments, yet Grant's borderline-goofy vocal approach on certain tracks felt at odds with the vintage analog soundtrack. Cut to five years later and the unexpected follow-up Yawning Abyss rights all the wrongs. Experimenting with vocoding and various effects that perfectly marry his voice to the music, Grant now fully understands his place in Creep Show - and the Wrangler guys are firing on all electronic cylinders, creating some truly arresting synth pieces that veer from menacing to funky. Standouts include "The Bellows," "Moneyback," "Steak Diane" and the film noir-ish "Bungalow," which finds Grant serenely crooning the cinematic lyrics.

Starcatcher Republic Records

Comparisons with Led Zeppelin will forever dog Michigan rockers Greta Van Fleet. While that’s hardly something to apologize for, it's clear that these young gents are forging new paths on Starcatcher , their fourth studio album. There are still some Zeppelin-esque moments, but much of this record forges new musical paths, while maintaining the groove and feel of previous GVF albums. Frontman Josh Kiszka’s vocals are as powerful and haunting as ever, while his twin brother Jake’s guitar work maintains the groove and creativity to which we’ve become accustomed. What I love about this band is how they unabashedly embrace the 1970's rock clichés. From gender-ambiguous costuming and guitardriven melodies, to folk songs played on 12-strings and John Bonham’s signature big drum sound, they embrace their influences. Check out rockers “Sacred is the Thread” and “Frozen Light” and the beautiful, acoustic “Meeting the Master.” It’s no surprise that Starcatcher debuted at #1 on many platforms. -

BLAST FROM THE PAST

FREE Fire and Water (1970) Island Records

Everybody knows “Alright Now” from the band Free. It’s been featured in dozens of commercials, movies and TV shows. But what few people know today is that Free was 50% of the band Bad Company, and in many ways, a more talented act (though Bad Company enjoyed greater commercial success). From 1969 to 1973, Free released six studio albums, and at a time when rock music was very much in flux. So many rock bands were searching for an identity and a sound all their own, and it took Free a few albums to find theirs. With the release of their third studio album Fire and Water in 1970, they hit their stride. Sure, “Alright Now” was the radio hit, but the album contains several of their most memorable performances. Free really was an all-star line-up. Vocalist Paul Rodgers had the voice, the swagger and the stage presence that would make him one of the most influential frontmen in history. Percussionist Simon Kirke (who, with Rodgers, later went on to form Bad Company) was a solid in-the-pocket drummer. Bassist Andy Fraser was, remarkably, just 15-years-old when he co-founded Free, and he contributed much to the songwriting process. Lastly, guitarist Paul Kossoff was an absolute beast on the Les Paul. His artistry as a soloist was a decade ahead of most other players in 1970. As evidence of this claim, consider that the legendary Eric Clapton once sought out Kossoff for instruction on how to improve his vibrato after hearing the latter play live. Fire and Water features brilliant song composition, catchy hooks, and spectacular guitar solos by Kossoff. Standouts are the title track, “Mr. Big," “Heavy Load,” and of course, “Alright Now.” It’s interesting to think about what might have been if Free had not separated due to Kossoff’s drug use and strife within the band. The troubled guitarist later recorded several solo albums before suddenly dying from a pulmonary embolism while on an aircraft in 1976. As a testament to Kossoff, check out Fire and Water. He really was lightning in a bottle.

BLUES WITH BRAGIN

MICK KOLASSA Wooden Music Endless Blues Records

Prolific singersongwriter Mick Kolassa returns with the acoustic-based Wooden Music. The album opens with “Educated by the Blues” featuring a guest spot from harmonica player Eric Hughes who provides a phenomenal solo in the middle of the song. “You Gotta Pay the Price” offers lyrics from Kolassa about people who struggle to survive. A special appearance from harmonica virtuoso Bob Corritore on “Sugar in Your Grits” provides a nice touch as Kolassa sings about blues past and present. Hughes returns on harmonica along with vocals from Libby Rae Watson on the Guy Clark song “Baby Took a Limo to Memphis.”

“If I Told You” allows Tom Lonardo to shine on drums as Vice Johnson lays down a great harmonica track. Rick Steff’s melancholy piano on “Hurt People” matches the lyrics about people treating others badly. Steff returns on accordion for “Memphis Wood” while Kolassa sings about a lost love and getting over the pain. Kolassa provides great acoustic guitar playing on “If Life Was Fair” to complement Steff’s piano. “Over My Shoulder” gives Kolassa the opportunity to sing about looking to the future with hope instead of looking to the past. Kolassa sings about his inability to handle marijuana on “One Hit Wonder.” The album closes with “Gas Station Sushi,” a song about a woman who seems appealing but later turns out to be less enjoyable than what he originally thought. SEPTEMBER BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This Mexican Lager pours a clear yelloworange with a thin white head. Yeasty on the nose, this lager is very easy drinking with a hint of malty sweetness and just a touch of spice on the palate. Smooth, low bitterness and low ABV makes this very sessionable. 4.5% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A thick white head tops this lager and dissipates rapidly. The scent contains a good balance of malt and hops. Similarly, the initial tasting of the beer offers sweet malt flavors, with bitter hops coming through in the long finish. This light beer with a low alcohol content will see a rise in popularity during hot summer months. Pair it with a variety of foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs or Mexican cuisine.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a cloudy yellow color. It's a nice Mexican beer with the nice malty flavor expected in most lagers. This beer is very easy to drink and I like the pint can. The ABV is only 4.5 % - I consider this a nice outdoors beer. It's crisp and very refreshing. I always enjoy a Hoosier beer.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

The Quarrymen pale ale pours a clear burnt orange hue with a thin white head. This is a classic pale ale with light notes of citrus on the nose. It is hop-forward on the palate, with a nice light hop bitterness and a touch of grapefruit on the finish. If you are tired of all the fruity, tropical IPAs and want to go back to a traditional pale ale, give this one a try. 5.5% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head crowns this pale ale and remains for a considerable amount of time. Hops control the scent profile. The tongue receives a coat of hop bitterness while drinking the beer, but some malt seems to come through to balance out the flavor in the long finish. Hop lovers will want to drink this beer. Pair it with a wide range of foods like cheeses, pizza, Mexican food, or fish and chips.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a slightly cloudy amber color. It has the standard sweet hops of most pale ales but a little more than usual - it's a little more intense which I like. The more I drink, the more I enjoy this beer. It has an ABV of 5.5% and comes in a pint can featuring great artwork.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This is a pumpkin ale that pours a slightly hazy burnt orange with a thin tan head. Pumpkin pie spices dominate the nose with nutmeg and clove at the forefront. On the palate there is also a bit of ginger, allspice and a hint of cinnamon. Malty and slightly sweet, with a light bitterness and a bit spicy on the finish. A solid choice for a fall pumpkin beer. 6.7% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A decent tan head forms on this brown ale and evaporates quickly. The beer boasts a very heavy pumpkin scent. Likewise, the first sip of the beer contains a heavy dose of pumpkin and spices that stay during the long finish. People who enjoy pumpkin beers need to drink this during its limited autumn run. Pair it with desserts to complement the spices like pumpkin pie, apple pie and creamy vanilla ice cream.

JABEZ

MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a slightly cloudy amber color. It has a nice nutmeg aroma and smells like pumpkin pie. In my opinion, Schlafly makes the best pumpkin beer hands down but this is second place. It has a nice pumpkin flavor; I'll be sure to seek this beer out during Halloween. Elysian has given Schlafly a run for their money. Good job.

BREWING INFINITY HERO

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

This IPA pours a semi-hazy orange with a thin white head. Lots of citrus on the nose, dominated by notes of tangerine. On the palate is the addition of grapefruit and a touch of malty sweetness. It has a nice crisp finish, with just a touch of bitterness. If you like the juicy, hazy IPA style, this is a perfect one to try. 7% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on this IPA and stays for a long time. A generous dose of hops fills the nose. The hop flavors remain when drinking the beer, with a good balance of malt and hops playing

back and forth in the very long finish before the hops become stronger. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to drink this. Pair it with foods such as Italian beef sandwiches, tacos or vintage Cheddar cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a cloudy amber color. I was expecting a very heavy hops flavor but it's very light. It's a little citrusy but very easy to drink for an IPA, especially considering the 7% ABV. It's sweet and refreshing without killing you with hops. This is an IPA I can say I really like. Well done.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Attorney WITH LANE SIESKY / SIESKY LAW FIRM, PC

Focusing on personal injury, civil litigation, whistleblower claims and workers' compensation law, Siesky Law Firm strives to provide excellent legal services while remaining client and community centered. The Evansville-based trio of top attorneys - including Lane Siesky, Daniel Gearhart and Douglas Briody - boasts years of invaluable experience inside and outside the courtroom. Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.

Q: I watch a lot of local newscasts and am always amazed at how many crime stories in the area involve drugs to some degree. Do you handle a lot of drug-related cases each year?

A:Simply put, drugs and alcohol are a major problem for the Tri-State. Drugs and alcohol, either directly or indirectly, account for a large number of legal cases. Indeed, many crimes are drug and alcohol related and are attributable to a lot of theft and robberies. Our law firm focuses on accident and injuries cases, and we encounter an alarming number of truck and car accidents that involve at-fault drivers using drugs and alcohol.

What is even more scary, is that a lot of the drunk driving accident cases occur during the day and not just late at night. Just a few examples of cases we have handled in the last few years include:

• a semi-truck driver on meth that rear-ended our client that was stopped at a red light;

• all types of drunk drivers that hit our clients on the roadway including left-turn cases, rear-end accidents and head-on collisions;

• drivers that cause accidents while high from marijuana; and

• cases involving bars that serve alcohol to visibly intoxicated patrons who then drive and cause accidents.

In Indiana, when an at-fault driver who is drunk or under the influence causes an accident and injures someone (the victim), the victim can pursue punitive damages in addition to compensatory damages, such as, lost wages, loss of ability to function, medical bills, pain and suffering and mental anguish.

The Indiana Statute that governs punitive damages allows victims to claim $50,000.00 or three (3) times the compensatory damages, whichever amount is greater. However, because punitive damages are meant to punish the at-fault driver (and not to compensate the victim), 75%

of the punitive damage recovery is paid to the violent crime victim’s relief fund and only 25% to the victim. Also, the burden is different for a punitive damage claim.

In a typical civil case, the Plaintiff has the burden of proving their case by the greater weight of the evidence. However, regarding a punitive damages claim, the Plaintiff’s burden is higher. The Plaintiff must prove their punitive damages claim by clear and convincing evidence. To further complicate matters, a lot of insurance policies do not provide coverage for punitive damages.

Having said all that, if you are injured by an at-fault driver who was drunk or under the influence, you should contact a personal injury law firm to discuss your rights and strategy for your case.
