FEATURES & UPCOMING EVENTS
When it comes to mourning the passing of summer, I am a broken record. I am a broken record. I am a broken record. You get the idea. Every year at this time I whine quite embarrassingly about the onset of cool, dry air and the unfortunate promise of much colder weather on the horizon. But I see no reason to stop now; it's sort of my thing, you know? Many of you, of course - as I'm always keen to point out - are thrilled to see an end to excessive heat and humidity, welcoming the change of season with open arms. I'll never understand it; however, I must respect it. Just please be kind to me in the weeks ahead as I do my best to recover
from summer's demise; a little part of me dies annually when the warm, sunny days go away. Is that melodramatic enough for you? If there's any consolation, it's that the tri-state is gearing up for another HUGE month of concerts and events this month - an absolute bounty of entertainment. Here's a teaser of what's on the October - and November - agenda (you'll have to check out our Fall Concert & Event Guide for the full meal deal): Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Hyprov, Alice Cooper, RuPaul's Drag Race Night of the Living Drag, Styx, Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, MercyMe & Toby Mac, Craig Ferguson and much more. It's almost enough to make me stop complaining about the
weather. But what would be the fun in that? By the way, we've got interviews with several of the performers noted so be sure to read up on them inside. But first, get the lowdown on our cover story, because everyone's favorite haunted houses are back and more fun than ever. Yes, the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and House of Lecter are now open for business in downtown Evansville through early November. Are you brave enough to enter the Tomb of Lost Souls? Find out on page 8!

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
2023-24
THE OLDE COURTHOUSE CATACOMBS & HOUSE OF LECTER
SEPTEMBER 29-NOVEMBER 4
Tomb of Lost Souls:
For the 44th year running, Evansville's Phil Wolter is sharing his passion for Halloween with the tri-state. Now in his fifth decade serving as the city's haunted house mastermind, he first sent chills up the spines of area men, women and children back in 1980 with the Phantom Theatre. A struggling artist at the time, Wolter got the call to take over for a departing team member and has never looked back, eventually creating the iconic Olde Courthouse Catacombs in 1996 before adding the House of Lecter to his horror résumé in 2001 - two frighteningly fun experiences separated by just two city blocks in downtown Evansville. Not surprisingly, it all equates to a lot of work for Wolter whose brain never shuts off. "Whether you're working physically on the project or mentally going through the whole thing it just seems like it goes on and on," he says.
8 | OCTOBER 2023 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
The tri-state's longest-running haunted houses are back for more scary fun!
But Wolter's pain is our gain. Every year the tri-state is treated to two of the longestrunning haunted houses in the nation that, at the heart of things, are entirely familyfriendly - both scary AND fun. Rest assured the 2023 edition of the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and House of Lecter will live up to the hype because Wolter has once again created a spooky theme with lots of intrigue and mystery. In fact, he's built on last year's highly-successful Burial Grounds / DOWNTOWN EVANSVILLE
concept which centered around a very creepy period in our city's history. Some 200 years ago, Evansville founder Hugh McGary, Jr. donated land here that was designated as the area's first cemeterywhich, many decades later, became the location of the proposed Courthouse. Construction workers digging out a basement for the building discovered unmarked graves - many of which were never exhumed... As Wolter explained when we spoke last September, "the lids have creaked open and the skeletal remains of all these ancestors are coming out and they're walking freely in the corridors down there."
THE TOMB OF LOST SOULS
And you'd best prepare yourself, because even more graves have been discovered in the bowels of the Catacombs and under the streets of downtown Evansville - and it seems that in some cases, these poor souls were buried prematurely. Back in the day, you see, doctors weren't quite as astute and autopsies were performed infrequently. People in a coma or comatose state often suffered terrible fates, dumped into caskets alive with bells on their feet and toes. As Wolter warns us, "when the bells ring, the coffin lids open, and those who were laid to rest will rise again...and some of them may not be too happy about being buried prematurely!"
So ask yourself one thing: Are you brave enough to enter the Tomb of Lost Souls?
Even if not, there's strength in numbers, so bring your friends and family along for support - scary moments aside, you're guaranteed to have a blast at the Olde Courthouse Catacombs and House of Lecter. Be sure to get the Unlimited Pass for maximum fun - just $30!

ABOUT THE OLDE COURTHOUSE CATACOMBS & HOUSE OF LECTER
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY & MORE
According to Wolter, the Indiana Ghost Trackers were called in about 20 years ago to conduct a study of the buildings and concluded without any hesitation that both the Olde Courthouse and House of Lecter have paranormal activity and ghost-like scenes. In addition, a clairvoyant came through and determined that there was a "cold spot" in the dirt-filled chambers of the Catacombs - which turned out to be right where prisoners were once brought under the street before being led up to the courthouse for their hearings. Wolter also notes that big, heavy doors have been seen springing open on their own and over the years, tenants have reported hearing and witnessing all sorts of mysterious things.
AN UNSOLVED MURDER
Back in 1973, a teacher at the old Lockyear Business College was walking home from work one evening and cut through the courthouse. Her body was discovered the next morning right inside where the exit stairs are located. She had been stabbed 22 times. To this day, the murder remains unsolved.
DEATH ON HALLOWEEN
While construction was taking place on one of the domes of the Olde Courthouse in 1890, two workers fell to their deaths when the scaffolding collapsed. Creepily, the tragic accident occurred on October 31 and the awful memory of that day still haunts the building every Halloween.

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND
BLUES GUITAR WIZARD TALKS THE MUSCLE SHOALS EXPERIENCE, THE "BEST OF TIMES," THE MAGIC OF MAKING MUSIC IN A ROOM TOGETHER AND MORE
Inarguably one of the greatest guitarists alive today, Kenny Wayne Shepherd has charted a singular career path, bursting onto the music scene as a teenaged prodigy via 1995's Ledbetter Heights and its landmark follow-up, Trouble Is... The latter secured the Louisiana native's rightful place in the hierarchy of blues and rock artists thanks to powerful tracks like "Blue on Black" and "True Lies"; in fact, the album made such a lasting impact that Shepherd rerecorded it last year, 25 years on, in recognition of an incredible journey that's evolved from youthful ambition to masterful performance.
Yet Shepherd's seemingly just getting warmed up. November will see the release of Dirt On My Diamonds Vol. 1 , the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the guitarist's expansive discography. Lyrically, the record reveals emotional truths that truly hit home; musically, as ever,
Shepherd and his band explore fresh approaches as heard on lead single "Sweet and Low" which merges modern urban and traditional blues influences.
Shepherd kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory.
Were you able to enjoy the Labor Day weekend or were you actually laboring?
Oh, I had a great time. And then I'm here actually in the state of Indiana. Hanging out with some friends and getting ready to do this concert that we're doing at Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend. It's like the beginning of the season concert that [Colts owner] Mr. Irsay is putting on, you know, free to the public, so I'm going to Indy this evening and we're going to start rehearsal for the next few days - the show's on Friday. And then I'm doing the national anthem at the game on Sunday, so this whole week has just

OCTOBER 1 / VICTORY THEATRE / 7 P.M.
been one great experience.
The upcoming album was written at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where musical icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Wilson Pickett recorded. How was the vibe?
It was great - the place is largely unchanged from when those records were made there; the vibe is fully intact and that was important. I mean, I'm a firm believer in that the environment influences the songwriting. We've written a lot of songs over the course of my career in some really unique places and we definitely got the whole Muscle Shoals experience - it was certainly present in the music we created on this record.
The title track emphatically opens the album - lyrically and musically it really sets the tone. Did it feel like the obvious way to introduce the listener to this new project?
After talking to Marshall Altman, who is my co-producer on this record, you know, he felt really strongly that that song was a great opening track for this record and had all the elements that you would expect for a song from my band. "Dirt on My Diamonds," the theme of that song is just about embracing flaws because that's what makes all of us unique and incredible, actually - instead of just facade and perfection that's trying to be projected out there in social media and the world that we live in today.
Another standout is "Best of Times" which seems to be referencing your early days as a musician when you were playing tons of
shows and working hard to make it in the music business.
There's that element - that element is there in the chorus. It's kind of like a young guy trying to use music as a vehicle to, you know, make a name for himself, to get him out of the small town experience. But the verses kind of speak to the modern day blues experience. I had a show that I was doing and Marshall and I drove down to a show and we ended up driving through this kind of town - you know, if you were looking at what the internet says should give you happiness and you looked at how these people were living, you'd think that they were probably some very unhappy people. You know, working, breaking their backs working - hard manual labor. There were kind of rundown buildings and things like that. But at the same time that we noticed all of that, about the town and the people in it, we also noticed the sense of community these people had and how happy they actually seemed. So it's like they were making the best of the worst of times - making the best of their situation, you know? And they found happiness outside of all of these things the world tries to tell us that we need to have to be happy.
Lead single "Sweet and Low" has a stomping main riff - one of your bestthat really drives the song. You must have known you were onto something special. Every song is different in how the song begins and how it gets written. That song, in particular, it started with the guitar riff. I had the guitar riff idea already - so it was a combination of me having the musical idea but then also Phillip White, who's one
of the co-writers, he walked in the door and was telling me how he'd stopped at a coffee shop on the way to the writing session and he was putting that sweetener in his coffee and how something about that Sweet'n Low packet was speaking to him. So we decided to take it and run with it.
Particularly since the pandemic, the trend of bands writing and recording music separately - emailing files back and forth - has become quite prevalent. But you remain a strong proponent of musicians playing together in a room.
Yes, whenever possible - absolutely. I'm just not a fan of emailing songs back and forth, you know, all over the world and never actually playing together. Because whoever is the first guy to lay down a track, they've just dictated the entire outcome of the song - the whole arrangement, everything that's going to happen has just been laid out in front of you and then you do what you're told. But when you're in a room with people and you're playing together, there's an opportunity for a new idea to happen, for something spontaneous to take place, for the song to take on a new direction. To me, that's the magic of making music. Call me old fashioned or whatever - maybe it costs more money to make my records than it does other people, but the end result is music that I'm proud of.

SO IT'S LIKE THEY WERE MAKING THE BEST OF THE WORST TIMES - MAKING THE BEST OF THEIR SITUATION, YOU KNOW? AND THEY FOUND HAPPINESS OUTSIDE OF ALL OF THESE THINGS THE WORLD TRIES TO TELL US THAT WE NEED TO HAVE TO BE HAPPY.
It's not every day you get to see a group of hypnotized people running around on stage in front of an audience, doing and saying increasingly crazy things for laughs. But that's exactly the premise of Hyprov: Improv Under Hypnosis. Co-created by improv comedy genius Colin Mochrie - best known as one of the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway - and world-famous hypnotist Asad Mecci, the unique concept merges two art forms to produce a show like no other. 20 volunteers are pared down to the most promising group of five - at
which point Mecci works his magic and the fun begins with Mochrie taking over as improv emcee, effectively. In a word, it's wild.
Mecci and Mochrie kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory.
Just so you know, this interview isn't going out live, so you can curse all you want.
MOCHRIE: Oh, good - because we're both foul-mouthed miscreants.
First off, how did the two of you connect? How did this merging of hypnosis and improv come about?
MECCI: So, I reached out to Colin on his website - cold, no connection at all. And I outlined the idea of putting hypnosis and improv together on stage. And then Colin's longtime manager, Jeff Andrews, picked up the email and from there I ended up meeting Colin. We put it [the show] up on the stage at Second City in Toronto, not knowing what would happen. And the show went great. From

there we workshopped the show and took it on tour - went to Just for Laughs Montreal, Just for Laughs London and eventually 80 cities across North America.
Colin, do you often receive unsolicited proposals for shows or was this a first? Not often. I mean, I do get requests from other improvisers saying we're trying out this different, uh, long form, we're doing a Dungeons & Dragons sort of thing or we're doing a life story of someone or a one-act play. This was the first time someone from another sort of art form had asked me to combine something and it's been fascinating. From the very first shows to where we are now, it's just been an incredible journey and we've learned so much of what we can ask our improvisers to do. I think when we first started, we were, I think, maybe a little bit cautious working with them because we weren't sure what they could do and now we find, you know, they can improvise with anyone - they can hold scenes together. It's just been amazing, amazing to watch.
Asad, you really hold the key to this show working - paring down the 20 volunteers to the best five and hypnotizing these strangers to improvise at will. Right - I've never met any of these people before; I don't use a "plant". It's very interesting...people have accused me of using a "plant" for many years and at the Chrysler [Theatre] in Windsor [Ontario, Canada] we ended up doing a performance there and the reporter thought, you know what, no way. The guy [improvising] on stage was a superstar
and was one of the best volunteers that was hypnotized on stage that night. And a reporter from the audience that had interviewed us previous to the performance thought that I had planted somebody - meaning we pre-arranged something with a volunteer to set-up the show. So he ended up interviewing the person after the show and said, 'hey, have you had any improv classes, do you have an acting background?' and he said 'no, I am a custodian for the Catholic school board.'
I imagine there are volunteers who attempt to feign hypnosis just so they can be part of the show.
MECCI: Yeah, so it's a dead giveaway. They don't move the same way and they don't speak the same way and they don't react the same way that somebody who's hypnotized does. So, they're over the top. Whereas people who are hypnotized, they just carry on with the suggestion without hesitation, without question. They're just trying to do the scene and carry out the suggestion that I gave them.
Is it possible to workshop new ideas for the show ahead of time? You likely don't have hypnotized people at your disposal on off-days.
MOCHRIE: There's no way that we can workshop games so we have to put it out there in front of an audience and see whether it works or it doesn't. Sometimes, it doesn't, which is the nature of improv - we just chalk that up to, well, we tried. And sometimes you think, you know what, it almost worked; let's try it again. And from there it goes gangbusters. I
think most of the time we've been quite fortunate with things working right away. We've found that as long as we keep it fairly simple for the improvisers, where they just have, like, one sentence of instruction, then it's fine...such as "You've fallen in love with Colin and you have to propose to him."
Colin, I've seen a clip of the beginning of the show where you are introduced as an "International Comedy Icon" - a title you most certainly deserve. It's inspired me to end all my work emails with "International Editing Icon"... It's a form of hypnosis, I think. The more you say something, the more they accept it. I've reached "International Comedy Icon" status just by telling people that I am.

In short, the fun never stops - nor do the tantrums or the tears. And that's just the way we like it.
With its wonderfully over-the-top approach to, well, everything, Drag Race is absolutely made for Halloween. So you don't want to miss Night of the Living Drag, the show's take on the most outlandish holiday of the year, complete with a Twilight Zone theme and famous drag queens sashaying around in frightening outfits. Event host Yvie Oddly - season 11 winner of Drag Race - will direct the proceedings
with typical fearlessness, playing the role of "Rod Serling" to the hilt.
Oddly kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Old National Events Plaza.
Before we get to Night of the Living Drag, you're about to head out on a one-woman tour called "Strange Love" - how long has it been in the works?
For a very long time - like, years. It's something in where I've always wanted to be able to showcase all these little things I was passionate about but not enough to do, maybe, a full spectacle for each. So, I'm doing stand-up - I love writing music and creating numbers; I love cabaret, burlesque. So, it's all these things that I'd ever thought of, just with a final push that came last year when somebody was like, hey, we've got a few venues that would like to have the show - could

you put something together for Valentine's Day? Then I just sat down for two weeks and wrote out everything I'd ever thought about love.
You always had the craziest, envelopepushing costume designs on Drag Race. Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night with new ideas? It seems like your mind is constantly on the go. It's funny you say that, because I have been recently. I was trying to get some good sleep last night and then I was dreaming about how to sew pockets [laughs]. It's just some part of me that's always there - I really like storytelling in general. That is one of the most encompassing things through all forms of art whether that's making music or creating an outfit or writing a show. Doing a lip-synch is how are you going to tell the story and how are you going to make it entertaining to people? While it's not always necessarily what I'm focusing on visually, it's always there in my art.
What's the most time you've spent on a costume design?
I'd say my run on [RuPaul's Drag Race] All Stars... a good number of those [costumes] were months in the making. That was partially because they gave us a little bit of a heads up; when I had initial talks with them they just said 'start making really nice things' and my mind ran off with it, I was just dreaming. I think the two longest looks I've ever personally worked on came off of All Stars 7. It was the "yarn" look and "Beat It" fringe runway look. Both of those were things that I had already been working on for months and when we got the challenges, I was like, ok, perfect - these fit, I'm going to work on them some more. So, like three or four months [total time].
Were you like this growing up - did you always have such a strong work ethic?
Oh my god, no! My work ethic is actually very terrible. I get very hyper-focused on specific
projects when it comes to art; because art never felt like work to me. Whether I was learning lines for a play or trying to create a Halloween costume for next year or customizing my Barbies. There's always some part of me that was really dedicated into putting as much time into whatever project I was working on and then as soon as that's done, there's no saying where my mind is gonna go. That definitely never applied to the, like, actual school work and stuff [laughs].
You are playing the role of "Rod Serling" for Night of the Living Drag. But shouldn't you really be referred to as the "Odd Serling" of the show?
I know! I thought of that last week. I'll write that in one of my bits.
Are the drag queens scheduled to appear all from various seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race? Not only are they from various seasons but various countries, even. I'm very excited about this show because I'm working with some queens who I haven't gotten to work with a lot and then queens who I've never worked with before - especially at this magnitude. Like Tayce from Drag Race UK and Icesis, the Drag Race winner of Canada. Plus, there's sisters I haven't seen in awhile like Plastique Tiara from my own season.
Can you give us any teasers in terms of what we'll be in for on October 10?
That kind of goes into what I was saying about my creative process in general - we're here to tell a story. Just like watching the Twilight Zone or for younger viewers out there, Black Mirror But it's gonna be a good old fashioned drag show with lots of sparkly things and big dance numbers. But, the twist is that we're going to be telling these creepy, creepy, otherworldly stories that transport you to what I like to call the Highlight Zone - it's like the Twilight Zone except that drag queens love highlighter.
Will drag queens be dropping like flies as the show progresses?
Yeah, it's a full-on battle to the death [laughs]. No, I don't want to give away too much. Each queen will kind of be going through her own trippy, surreal, dark fantasy. So, you know, not everyone dies in these shows but people's worlds are drastically changed and taken into, well, some of your deepest nightmares [laughs].

ON PERFORMING "MR. ROBOTO" LIVE, THE CREATION OF "KHEDIVE" AND LEARNING A TRICK OF THE TRADE FROM LIBERACE
VOCALIST/KEYBOARDIST LAWRENCE GOWAN
Prepare to sail away once again, tri-state. Returning to downtown Evansville this month by popular demand, the almighty Styx are primed to show why they remain a dominant force in music over 50 years after their formation. Expect to hear all the classic songs that have made the band a timeless fan favorite - the likes of "Blue Collar Man," "Fooling Yourself," "Renegade," "Too Much Time on my Hands" and, of course, the epic "Come Sail Away" - as well as highlights from their 2016 masterpiece The Mission and the ambitious follow-up, Crash of the Crown. As an added bonus, Styx have reinstated their 1983 smash "Mr. Roboto" into the set. Vocalist/keyboardist Lawrence Gowan, who recently marked the start of his 25th year with the group, delivers the kitschy techno-pop melodrama with
aplomb, and it always goes down a storm.
As do "Khedive" and "Lost at Sea," Gowan's classically-inspired compositions that served as highlights on The Mission and Crash of the Crown, respectively - and now punctuate Styx's live set, giving the band's keyboardist the opportunity to really shine on stage.
Gowan kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show for a wide-ranging interview. Here's part two of our discussion (part one appeared in the August issue).
Is "Mr. Roboto" the most complex song to replicate live in terms of the keyboards?
Yes. So, for that song, I use a sequencer behind me that's covering a lot of the stuffat least half of the keyboards... there's parts
where there are five keyboard parts going on at the same time, three of which are mechanical, arpeggiating sequences. And then I play the other parts live. Anything that has a melody [demonstrates on keyboard] I play that live or the main verse riff. The song needs to be mainly sequenced because you could never get it as rigid and robotic as a sequencer - the song sounds right when you do it that way. Whenever we rehearse it without the sequencer, it loses the charm of the song.
One of the highlights of the current Styx live show is the classically-inspired instrumental "Khedive" off of 2016's The Mission. Your piano playing on that track is off the chartshow did that composition take shape?
I started listening to [American composer and

pianist] Philip Glass - I'd listened to him years before - but started listening to him again and his use of arpeggios and how effective it was and how, kind of, modern-sounding it was. There's a lot of that in Styx musicthere's a lot of use of arpeggiation figures. So I started with that but then as I got into it a little bit, it was right around the time that my dad was getting on in age and he was reminiscing a lot about his time in the Navyhe was in the British Royal Navy. And I started trying to sculpt the piece in a way that I wanted it to sound like progressive rock, but I wanted it to sound like these arpeggios were like waves that were kind of sloshing back and forth and then finally settling into a calm sea [demonstrates on electric piano]. I like having a little background story in my mind as I'm trying to, kind of, ping into the... it doesn't have to be literal but just something there that kind of steers the piece along. So with that guiding force I finally finished the piece and then played it... I was actually playing it in the studio. You know what? I actually started playing it on stage as an intro into "Pieces of Eight" because they're both in A minor. And when I was playing that, [guitarist] Tommy [Shaw] asked me, 'What are you calling that?' and I said that I wasn't sure yet, but that it reminded me of my dad's time in the Navy. And then I was playing it for my dad and he asked me the same question: 'What are you calling that?' And a picture of this ship was actually above the piano and it was called Khedive, which means "the ruler." And I said, 'I think I'm going to call
it "Khedive"' and my dad said 'Well, that's very appropriate because that ship was built in America but commissioned to Britain for the duration of the second World War.' I thought, well that ties it kind of nicely because it [the song] was commissioned to a band called Styx [laughs].
Incredibly, you're playing "Khedive" livewhich must be an insane workout for your fingers.
It is [laughs]. It is a workout. You know, in the past I've actually learned a Rick Wakeman piece or a Keith Emerson piece - how well they can pull those off live. It's not any more challenging than some of their work. But it is a great moment because they [the band] give me the stage to myself to do that - I do that one and the piece from Crash of the Crown, "Lost at Sea," which is our segue-way into "Come Sail Away." I have to kind of... I need to take a breath before I play it because I know, don't let your right hand cramp up [laughs] because of all the arpeggiating. And basically, when you come to the show, watch how I need to shake off between
each segment - there has to be a quick little moment where I shake off the right hand just to kind of get the blood flowing again so I don't have the ligaments seize up on me. It's a trick that I saw... I used to watch tapes of Liberace, and still watch clips of Liberace, and he had this, what looked like a complete affectation where he would extend his hand in an almost exaggerated way - his right hand - between certain phrases. And I began to realize... when I'd be trying it I'd be mimicking it or almost mocking it in some ways... oh, this is actually a good thing because it resets your hand to get ready for the next phrase.
For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.
I LIKE HAVING A LITTLE BACKGROUND STORY IN MY MIND AS I'M TRYING TO, KIND OF, PING INTO THE... IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE LITERAL BUT JUST SOMETHING THERE THAT KIND OF STEERS THE PIECE ALONG.

COUNTRY MUSIC STAR TALKS "CAB IN A SOLO," HIS PARTNERSHIP WITH WRITER/PRODUCER FRANK ROGERS, THE ANNUAL "OPRY COUNTRY CHRISTMAS" SHOW AND MORE
AN INTERVIEW WITH SCOTTY MCCREERY
You simply can't mistake that deep, resonant baritone. Even at an early age, American Idol winner Scotty McCreery could go low, possessing a mature, smooth vocal approach that's translated to five highly-acclaimed albums, including 2021's Same Truck featuring the huge hits "It Matters to Her" and "Damn Strait," a tribute to country music legend George Strait. The popularity of those two singles consolidated the colossal success of "Five More Minutes," the emotional lead single off 2018's Seasons Change which, to date, has racked up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube alone.
Now McCreery is back with new music, recently dropping "Cab in a Solo," a catchy lament for the heartbroken. Armed with a killer chorus, the song depicts the plight of a man who's lost his gal to someone else - and now all he can do is sit outside her home in the dark, "drinkin' cab in a Solo, solo in the back of my truck." It's got all the elements of classic country - 90's-era, in particular - from the clever wordplay to the slide guitar and general instrumentation, elevating the single above the current pop-country trend. Already gaining major traction on radio, "Cab in a Solo" looks to be one of McCreery's biggest hits yet.
McCreery recently performed at the Victory Theatre in front of an adoring crowd. We caught up with the singer just a few days before the show to discuss the new single and more.
Your latest single "Cab in a Solo" contains some classic country wordplay in the line "Drinkin' cab in a Solo, solo in the cab of my truck." Is that how the song got started, with that hook?
Yeah, that's exactly how it got started. My buddy Brent Anderson who I love writing songs with...it was me, him and a few of our other friends up in the mountains of

North Carolina. We all kind of came with our ideas and Brent came with that one. I raised my hand really quick and said 'we have to write that one.' Like you said, it's kind of that classic country play on words. So we just sat down in front of the fireplace and wrote that song in probably a couple of hours.
Now, had you previously enjoyed a little cab in a Solo? Or was that new territory for you?
You know, on the road, we sure had. Who knows what we'll have in the Solo cups after we get off stage and we're rollin' down the highway. Glass typically doesn't do too well on the tour bus. We tend to go with Solo cups.
The song was co-written and co-produced by Frank Rogers who's been with you since the beginning of your career, postAmerican Idol. No doubt that's been a very important partnership for you. It sure has - I love Frank. He's been a producer, number one - that's kind of how our relationship started. But more than that
I think he's just been a mentor to me; he kind of showed me the ropes of the music industry and, you know, a lot of times our songwriting sessions together will turn into more of just his stories on the road and his stories of his days in the business. And that's kind of helped me on my journey and my path through the business myself. I've got a lot of love for that guy and a lot of my music, like you said, from the very beginning his fingerprints have been all over it. So I've got a lot of respect to pay to Frank and my thanks goes out to him for the last 12 years of my career.
This month you'll be inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame - an honor that's previously been bestowed on country greats like the late Charlie Daniels, Ronnie Milsap, Randy Travis, Eric Church and more. Not to mention fellow American Idol contestants, including Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler. That's some pretty good company. Yeah, for me, at the ripe old age of 29 - but 30 when that happens - it's an honor. You know, I'd been wanting to make music my whole life and got to do it at an early age and have enjoyed every moment; I don't take any of this for granted. I don't do any of this for accolades, for rewards or recognition, but it's really cool to get honored like this. I'm excited - you just named off a bunch of my heroes. I'm ecstatic, I'm stoked; it's going to be a fun night. To be mentioned in the same breath as them is quite an
honor.
For me, as an old guy, I'd be stoked to be mentioned in the same breath as Andy Griffith who was inducted in 2010, just a couple of years before he passed.
Oh yeah, 100 percent. He is North Carolina royalty, absolutely.
You're an admitted Elvis devotee. When will we get an Elvis cover on record?
[Laughs] Well, I mean, lord knows any moment on the road I could break it out. I probably sing Elvis once a day just walking around the house or in the tour bus or wherever I am. But yeah, I would love to record something. I'd love to do a covers album of folks that influenced me - whether that be Elvis or, you know, those guys we just mentioned there in the Hall of Fame. Yeah, I do love some Elvis.
In addition to the Hall of Fame induction, you've got a holiday performance for the annual "Opry Country Christmas" on the horizon. Do you have an idea of what you'll do for the show yet?
A little bit of one. You know, I've got a lot of Christmas favorites that we love to doElvis is one of them that I've covered for a long time: "Santa Clause is Back in Town". I always look forward to the Christmas season because I can pull that one back out of the shop and start playing it again. Sometimes with the Opry we can decide that day [what we'll play] - me and the band will be like, 'which classic do we want to cover today?' Those Christmas shows at the Opry, it's become kind of a tradition for us; we love doing them.

GHOST PROM
NEW YORK-BASED INDIE FOLK DUO SIGNS ON WITH EVANSVILLE'S WALLY OPUS RECORDS, DEBUTS NEW SINGLE "5AM" WITH ALBUM TO FOLLOW
There are surely stranger origin stories of bands signing to record labels, but this one's pretty odd, nonetheless. Dial back to the beginning of summer, if you will. That's when Wesley Luttrell, head of Wally Opus Records in Evansville, was contacted by a New York-based husband/wife indie folk duo called Ghost Prom. As it turned out, they had been messaged by local musician Sam Kuban in regards to a song on their 2021 EP Don't Die entitled "Swamp Eyes." See, Kuban's pet musical project - also named Swamp Eyes - is part of the Wally Opus roster. He noted the connection when he came across Ghost Prom online and reached out to the duo - which is when they became aware of one of Evansville's coolest record labels. As the story goes, Ghost Prom followed Wally Opus for a few months, increasingly impressed by what Luttrell had going on with area bands. It was then that the duo sent word they had a recorded album almost ready to go. And, by the way, was there interest in working together?
Indeed, there was. First, Wally Opus came on board as the duo's manager but soon the objective shifted to releasing the now finished album scheduled to drop on November 17. As a taster, the label recently teased the lead single, "5am" - a mid-tempo indie-folk gem that highlights Ghost Prom's knack for melody and vocal harmonies. The song is driven by electric guitar, but played with a restraint that keeps the focus on the confessional nature of the lyrics: "I told you that I would change/ And I must have told you that a thousand ways/ But I swear this time it is different in my mind."

STACKIN' EIGHTS
LOCAL SOUTHERN ROCKERS RE-SHUFFLE
THE DECK, CONSOLIDATE LINEUP FOR MADE IN GEORGIA
Over the last year, there's been one band name that keeps popping up in the tri-state, booked solid at various venues week after week: Stackin' Eights - self-described as the "southern rock tribe with a hippie vibe." Whether it's shows at Bud's Rockin' Country Bar & Grill, KC's Time Out Lounge, Bokeh Lounge or a host of other area hotspots, this talented outfit stays seriously busy entertaining local crowds with both dynamic original songs and well-chosen covers. But it hasn't been easy, exactly. There's been some shakeups in the lineup and general difficulties that most bands go through. Still, it's only made Stackin' Eights stronger, as evidenced by Made in Georgia, the group's debut album which builds on 2022's Rock n Roll Southern Soul EP, reprising three of its tracks while introducing seven new barnburners.
Produced by Paul Hornsby and Stephen Horning, Made in Georgia finds the band in superb form with guitarist Stevie Lee writing some muscular yet addictive tunes and Misty Dawn rocking the mic like a boss, executing flawless vocals that retain an edge - something readily apparent right from album opener "Eightified," a theme song of sorts which neatly ties back to Aretha Franklin's "Think" with its inspired refrain of "Freedom!" Here, as on the remaining nine tracks, the rhythm section of bassist Marc (like Madonna, first name only) and drummer Brett Holland really shines, providing a locomotive-like drive, while second guitarist Preston Lee adds invaluable grit, amping up the southern rock quotient. Standouts include the outlaw lament "Runnin' from the Son" and confessional "Not Me" - but the whole album kills.
Made in Georgia is available on major streaming platforms. For more info, visit stackineightstribe.com.

THE ROCK & METAL PROFS
WITH MATT ALSCHBACH & DR. COURT LEWIS
Associate professors at Owensboro Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, respectively, Alschbach and Lewis host the popular podcast The Rock & Metal Profs: The History & Philosophy of Rock & Metal. Now they're bringing their keen insights to the pages of News 4U with a monthly deep dive into some of the best bands of the rock/metal genre and thoughts on music in general.
IS YOUR FAVORITE BAND LIP-SYNCHING?
Not that long ago, lip-synching to tracks during live performances was a great way to end a career. We all remember Milli Vanilli being exposed because they lip-synched to their hits and didn’t even sing on their albums. Ashley Simpson was humiliated on SNL when the wrong track was played and her band panicked on stage - they hadn’t prepared to mime that one! Virtually every Super Bowl halftime show features artists pantomiming to their hits (though we don't seem to mind, as it’s a sporting event). In the last few years, the use of backing tracks has become a major talking point because so many bands are lip-synching, yet charging fans exorbitant prices for a “live” performance. Are we really willing to pay thousands of dollars to watch our favorite artist pretend they're giving their all? Apparently so.
Many rock and metal artists have condemned the use of backing tracks, while others defend those who use them. It’s become a running joke that KISS founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley sing to backing tracks, but at least their mics are on! WASP’s Blackie Lawless was defiant in admitting that he uses backing tracks for vocals and instruments because he wants
his songs to sound full and as close to the studio recordings as possible. Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe were accused of using backing tracks, and there was some video evidence that appeared to confirm this. Ironically, the one guy in the band who doesn't use backing tracks (but probably should) is singer Vince Neil. His vocal butchery of Crüe classics is legendary. If you’ve not seen the video of Vince massacring the lyrics to “Kickstart My Heart,” do yourself a favor and go on YouTube now for a good laugh.
All of this begs the question: does it matter if artists use backing tracks live if fans attending the shows enjoy themselves? We saw KISS live twice in 2019, and it was clear that Gene and Paul used backing tracks sparingly at certain points in songs, particularly for vocals in the higher register. However, it appeared that most of their vocals were live. Paul attempted the opening to “Heaven’s on Fire” (a challenge for any
vocalist), and it did not go well. Definitely no backing track there. In spite of all this, we thoroughly enjoyed the show, marveling at the spectacle and nostalgia of it all. While many aging vocalists have turned to backing tracks, others like Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Alice Cooper and Sebastian Bach refuse to do so, even if it isn’t perfect. Purists argue that the beauty of the live performance is in the imperfections and mistakes that happen, even with professional artists. We’d like to hear your take.

THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN
by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray
The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray is one of the first, and few, historical fiction books I have read willingly, but I am so glad that I chose to.
It’s the story of Belle da Costa Greene, the personal librarian of J.P. Morgan - yes, that one - and her triumphs and tribulations of being the only woman of color in the job at that time. However, because of her skin tone and ancestry, she “passed” as a white woman, which is one of the main storylines of the book.
The storytelling from Benedict and Murray is enthralling and captivating. It took me a little bit to get into it due to historical fiction not being something I normally read, but once I was in it, I was in it. Greene’s work captivated me. She was strong, and she didn’t let anyone, including the men, forget it. She was respected, inspiring, loved and a role model. Reading about her worries with being found out about who she truly was, and very rarely letting it stop her, was fascinating. She knew she could do the job and didn’t let anything stop her from doing so.
The romantic aspects were a bit shocking, especially toward the end of the book. Usually romance is something I enjoy reading about, but in this book, I was enamored more with Greene’s work than love life, which I think is fair given this isn’t a romance novel.
The Personal Librarian was a good foot in the door into the historical fiction genre for me personally, and I will definitely be checking out other works by these authors. - Karah Wilson

SWEET MEATS
KENTUCKY FILMMAKER AT THE HELM OF UPCOMING TROMA-PRODUCED
HORROR COMEDY MUSICAL
The longest-running independent movie studio in North America, TROMA Entertainment boasts an impressive catalog of films to its credit, including cult classics like The Toxic Avenger , The Class of Nuke 'Em High and Tromeo & Juliet - all three directed or co-directed by company president Lloyd Kaufman. He's a legend in the indie film world, hands down. And now Kaufman is lending his support to an intriguing new project from the mind of Kentucky writer/director Ricky Glore, coming on board as an executive producer (EP). Entitled Sweet Meats , the upcoming film is reported to be a horror comedy musical - a trifecta of genres enjoined to create a wholly entertaining and fresh mash-up.
Sweet Meats will also benefit from the involvement of Owensboro's P.J. Starks, co-creator of the highly-acclaimed Volumes of Blood anthologies via Blood Moon Pictures. He and his production partner Eric Huskisson are currently on track to complete and release the hotly-anticipated New Fears Eve in the coming months. According to Starks, who's also signed on as an EP for Sweet Meats , much of the film is being shot in Kentucky at Bobby Mackey's, a haunted Wilder bar that's been featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures . In addition, some scenes will be filmed in Ohio. You, too, can support this exciting new regional project by donating to the cause. An Indiegogo fund has been set up at: indiegogo.com/projects/sweet-meats-a-troma-producedhorror-film#/

iOctober scarefest: This month's batch of new films includes an Exorcist reboot, an 80's slasher throwback and animatronics gone wild
THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER
If you were lucky enough to watch the original The Exorcist in theaters in 1973, you were privileged to witness an iconic time in horror cinema. The vulgar taunts of a 12-year-old girl have haunted moviegoers for ages (thank you Linda Blair for jumpstarting the scream queen generation). It's often best not to touch cult gold, but director David Gordon Green is hoping to piggyback on his successful 2018 Halloween reboot. In this iteration, we're served up a double dose of possession, with a young white girl, Olivia Marcum, as Katherine and black girl, Lidya Jewett, as Angela Fielding, getting body-snatched by the devil. Leslie Odom Jr. takes on the role of Angela’s concerned dad Tanner. He's panicked after she and Katherine wander off into the woods for three days with seemingly no idea where they went. Surprise: it was probably Hell. The most delicious twist is Ellen Burstyn reprising her role as Chris MacNeil 50 years later, back to help tame these terrible teens. IN THEATERS 10/6
TOTALLY KILLER
A devilish concoction of Back to the Future and Prom Night is just the teen horror movie we needed this Halloween courtesy of Blumhouse Productions. Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is extending her scream queen status as 17-year-old Jamie, who just wants to party like a normal teen on Halloween. The hilarious Julie Bowen, as her over-protective mother, tries to stop her, worried the "Sweet Sixteen Killer" might strike again. She has good reason – the dormant serial-murderer butchered three of her classmates back in the 80's. Jamie, of course, still sneaks out and lo and behold who does she run into but the infamous slasher himself. In trying to escape, she accidentally travels back in time to 1987 on Halloween to the day of the original killings. There, she must join forces with her teen mom, played by Olivia Holt, to stop the bloodbath once and for all - or wind up either dead or trapped in the 80's forever. AMAZON PRIME 10/6
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S
The popular horror video game series first launched in 2014 is finally getting its own movie nine years later after years of production hell. The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, a new security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. He must survive after the animatronic mascots of the fast food joint come to life with a murderous appetite post-midnight. It’s a blood-soaked Chuck E. Cheese and I am here for it. Piper Rubio plays Mike’s younger sister Abby, who tags along on his first dayor should I say night - at the job. She ends up being the target of the devious animatronics desperate to claim her soul. Elizabeth Lail (You) and Matthew Lillard (Scream) also co-star, which is a personal delight for me as a horror fan. Lillard plays the creepy villain, William Afton, and I know he will sinisterly sizzle on the screen. As the film's tagline states, "When the night shift starts, the nightmare begins."

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE
WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER
SHEILA KEEN-WARREN: KILLER CLOWN
Seeing as there hasn't been a high-profile true crime story dominating the news over the last month - at least not to the level of the Idaho murders, the Long Island serial killer or the Alex Murdaugh trial (actually, at the time of writing, Murdaugh may be granted a new trial based on alleged inappropriate communication between the court clerk and the jury) - it's a good time to look back at one of the most bizarre cases over the last four decades. In fact, the saga of Sheila KeenWarren, dubbed the "killer clown," just reached its unexpected conclusion in April of this year. That's how long it's taken to bring Keen-Warren to justice after she heartlessly shot her romantic rival dead back in 1990.
33 years ago, Sheila Keen-Warren, then known as Sheila Keen, was reportedly having an affair with Michael Warren, a married man living in Wellington, Florida. The two worked together at Michael's sketchy auto dealership and quickly developed a secret relationship. According to authorities, they also hatched a plan to take out Warren's wife, Marlene, with the promise of a five-figure life insurance payment and more. Then, on May 26, 1990, a clown appeared at the Warren household, complete with a red bulb nose, orange wig and painted-on smile. In its hand was a bouquet of flowers and two balloons - one of which was emblazoned with the phrase "You're the Greatest!" Marlene, who answered the door, seemed touched by the gesture. But just moments later she was shot in the face by the clown who then calmly walked back to its car and drove off. Marlene did not survive.
For years, investigators suspected Sheila's involvement in the murder as her relationship with Michael came to light but simply couldn't gather enough evidence for
an arrest. As it turned out, the two would get married in 2002, move out of state and live a comfortable lifestyle, making friends with neighbors who had no clue about the couple's past. Finally, in 2014, the case was reopened and DNA reportedly connected Sheila to the crime. Not only that, during the original investigation, local shop owners recalled a woman matching her description purchasing the clown outfit, wig and balloons just prior to the murder. She was taken into custody three years later and sat in jail awaiting trial - some 2000-plus days in all. Then, this past April, something quite unexpected happened. After years of denying she had any connection to the crime, Sheila pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement approved by Marlene's family. To date, Michael has never been charged - though suspicions remain. And while Sheila's admittance of guilt has brought much-needed closure to this truly bizarre case, she may well be out from behind bars in less than two years based on time served and the terms of the plea agreement. Her lawyers, it seems, have declared victory, stating that Sheila effectively won by accepting said agreement, while continuing to insist that she's innocent.
"BUT JUST MOMENTS LATER SHE WAS SHOT IN THE FACE BY THE CLOWN WHO THEN CALMLY WALKED BACK TO ITS CAR AND DROVE OFF. MARLENE DID NOT SURVIVE.

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT
Evansville's Luke Kane recounts his childhood as being mostly devoid of pets, but not by choice. "I won't say that we weren't allowed to have animals because we did have a hamster and a parakeet - but now that I'm older I realize that growing up we just didn't have the resources to be able to have a pet in the home," he explains. Years later, after meeting and eventually marrying his wife Sarah, all that changed. You see, Sarah didn't enter the relationship solo; she was a package deal. When the couple moved into their new home on the city's northeast side, a longbodied cat named Henry settled in, too. At Sarah's side since college, the
beloved Maine Coon found an ally in Luke who was thrilled to finally have a four-legged friend roaming around the house. "You could say Henry was my first real pet," Luke notes. "He's been around for both of our daughters being born and other big moments in our relationship."
But with Henry reaching senior citizen status, Luke and Sarah began discussing the possibility of adopting a second cat - a way to "soften the blow whenever Henry has to say goodbye."
That's when the couple saw a post from local radio personality Claire Ballard who was fostering a group of kittens from the VHS, one of which
immediately appealed to Luke based on its color alone. "Growing up I read a lot of "Garfield" and so we always joked about getting an orange cat," he says. "Sarah took the girls to go meet "Felix" and the rest is historythey got attached to him real quick and could just tell that he was a good one." More accurately, he was "purrrfect," as Luke describes him.
But it wasn't exactly smooth sailing at first. Felix's transition to his forever home got off to a rocky start - he was skittish at first and at odds with Henry who deemed this new addition to the family a potential threat. Of course, it didn't help that Felix liked to roughhouse with the elder cat; however, over time the tide began to turn as Luke and Sarah worked daily to create a comfortable environment for these two felines at opposite stages of their lives. Two months into the adoption, Felix can now be found eating his meals next to Henry and sharing nap time with his older brother. Yes, he still occasionally plays a little too aggressively, but Henry deals with it and there's peace for the most part. And Luke continues to stand by his assertion that Felix is the "purrrfect" cat - something he tells Sarah on a regular basis.

THEY GOT ATTACHED TO HIM REAL QUICK AND COULD JUST TELL THAT HE WAS A GOOD ONE.
AS I TYPE THIS...
with Barold Hume
I've had a number of things on my mind to discuss of late, politicallyspeaking and otherwise, but my focus right now seems to be squarely on Danelo Cavalcante. Don't know who that is? Then you must be sleeping on the job - or to be more clear, you must not watch or read any news of any kind. Hey, I don't blame you, really; staying in the loop can be rather depressing at times. Now back to this Cavalcante cat. A terrible, terrible person. Convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing and killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two children. The worst of the worst. The kind of guy that needs to remain behind bars for the rest of his pathetic life. And yet, as I type this, Cavalcante has been on the run since August 31 after escaping Spider-Man-style from a Pennsylvania prison (surely you've seen the clip by now), having eluded authorities despite numerous sightings and the employment of perimeters. Incredibly, he's still in the general area, believed to be no more than 20 miles from the prison. Which brings me to why I'm so fascinated by this story. Because while I have zero intention of committing
a crime of any nature, I occasionally wonder how long I would last on the run.
Well, first I'd be tasked with breaking out - good luck there. Like everyone else, I've seen The Shawshank Redemption and trust me, I simply don't possess the intelligence nor the patience to hatch a successful escape plan. No, I'd just sit and read every day till the end - maybe do a push-up or two along the way to help keep the psychos in the neighboring cells at bay. However, let's imagine there's an alternate universe where I'm crafty as all get-out and dig my way to freedom á la Andy Dufresne. Then what? I've lived in Evansville for a good number of years but would have no clue where to go with no car, no money and no phone. It pains me to say that I'm impressed by Cavalcante's survival skills, but let's be honest, he's got game. Not only has the guy managed to give authorities the slip, but he's reportedly visited the homes of former co-workers to seek assistance, stolen a car and procured a .22 caliber rifle. Oh, and
Cavalcante changed his appearance for good measure, somehow emerging cleanshaven with a newly-procured hoodie to obscure his features as captured on a surveillance camera recently. But perhaps I shouldn't be so hard on myself. After all, a lack of cunning may just be a sign that I've lived a law-abiding life. Kind of boring but that's certainly preferable to being hunkered down in the woods somewhere on the west side of the city as the EPD closes in from all sides and threatens to unleash the dogs. Might make for a good movie, though.
NO, I'D JUST SIT AND READ EVERY DAY TILL THE END - MAYBE DO A PUSH-UP OR TWO ALONG THE WAY TO HELP KEEP THE PSYCHOS IN THE NEIGHBORING CELLS AT BAY.

*UPDATE: Cavalcante was captured just prior to the magazine going to print.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... A RACE AGAINST (FATHER) TIME
There are few more satisfying things in life than beating the odds. (Well, apart from Ski soda, that is.) This is especially true as one inevitably begins to grapple with Father Time and the body and mind prepare for a permanent vacation; no one wants to accept or admit that they're in decline, that they're not as sharp mentally and physically. Not surprisingly, this is why so many people seek the elusive fountain of youth (or the fountain of Ski, in my case). It doesn't exist, of course, but every once in awhile, particularly in the arena of sports, we witness something truly inspiringlike Tom Brady winning a Super Bowl in his early forties or, more recently, Novak Djokovic winning a 24th Grand Slam tennis title at the age of 36. Granted, these sorts of remarkable achievements later in life are rare; yet, they provide hope, even if just a glimmer. You start to think that maybe, just maybe, despite being an old fart who
with Johnny Fletcher
occasionally drinks too much, doesn't exactly follow a strict diet and regularly suffers self-inflicted injuries, maybe you, too, could beat the odds. Wait, that sounds suspiciously like me. Clearly I'm projecting here. Point being that by the time you read this, I'll have made yet another attempt at turning back the clock. Literally.
See, I've got this mildly unhealthy obsession with trying to better my time at the Evansville Half Marathon each year. (I suppose it gives me something to concern myself with besides the ever-increasing price of Ski. $12.99 for a 24-pk - highway robbery!) The race, as I type this, is just under three weeks away and the question remains: can a 53-year-old man beat the odds and once again set a personal best? To be honest - and god knows I'd rather lie to myself - things are looking a little dicey. In 2022, I somehow shaved four
entire minutes off my previous PB which was thrilling at the time but now presents a conundrum of sorts. Because admittedly I'm moving a touch slower this yearmorning runs have often felt like a slog for the first few miles until my aging muscles finally loosen up. Now, part of this apparent slowdown can be attributed to numerous back problems over the last 12 months and various other physical issues that often come with age. Let's just say it ain't been pretty. As a result, it's difficult to truly gauge my prospects for pulling off another Benjamin Button-esque performance. I'll certainly finish the race - that's a given. But if Father Time gets the better of me and I fail to improve upon last year's effort, I won't be that surprised. At the end of the day, all you can do is give it a shot. May my beloved Hoka brand running shoes carry me to new heights... cough, cough, wheeze.

YOU START TO THINK THAT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, DESPITE BEING AN OLD FART WHO OCCASIONALLY DRINKS TOO MUCH, DOESN'T EXACTLY FOLLOW A STRICT DIET AND REGULARLY SUFFERS SELF-INFLICTED INJURIES, MAYBE YOU, TOO, COULD BEAT THE ODDS.
WE RECENTLY LOST YET ANOTHER MUSICAL ICON IN JIMMY BUFFETT. I THINK YOU COULD TAKE THE MANTLE AS THE NEXT KING OF "YACHT ROCK." MAYBE CHANGE YOUR NAME TO FREDDIE BUFFETT?
Dear Christopher Cross, I’ll leave that up to you. Also, you look like Tenacious D's Kyle Gass - albeit less sexy.
IT WAS REPORTED THAT YOU ESSENTIALLY PERFORMED SHIRTLESS AT FRONT PORCH FEST IN DOWNTOWN EVANSVILLE IN EARLY SEPTEMBER. DON'T YOU THINK IT'S A LITTLE CRUEL TO TEMPT THE LADIES LIKE THAT WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY ENGAGED?
Dear Clueless, Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Ha. “Essentially.” Also, why does it just got to be the ladies?

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WERE THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE BLACKOUT OF ESPN ON SPECTRUM SO THAT I WAS UNABLE TO WATCH THE US OPEN TENNIS TOURNEY? FOLLOW-UP QUESTION: WHY ARE YOU SO HEARTLESS?
Dear Nerd,
Oh, I’m so sorry I decided to blackout a sport that Americans only care about once a year. You are starting to act like the people that pretend to be soccer fanatics during the World Cup. Sure, I might have watched it religiously in 2010 during prom weekend. But I was drunk - which apparently was a legitimate excuse for an 18-year-old living out of a bag throughout his senior year and for someone that clearly fooled people into trusting me that I would not get “too wild.” I almost got arrested for trying to rollerblade on the boardwalk at 2:30 a.m. shirtless. Instead, I was dragged into the house I was staying in and was “dared” to do push-ups

In conclusion, I was trying to prevent the youth from making the same mistakes I did.
THERE'S A LOT OF SPECULATION ABOUT WHAT'S ON HUNTER BIDEN'S LAPTOP - INCLUDING DAMNING INFORMATION ABOUT YOU. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING FROM THE PUBLIC?
Dear Mr. Bush,
OK. Fine. I guess it’s time to tell people how I actually became famous. In the early-to-mid 2000s, my childhood friends and I created an internet show called Dumbass You can probably guess the inspiration behind that name. When our families got concerned about our safety, we decided to pivot into lazy unscripted acting. In 2007, my friend Jesse and I performed an unrehearsed skit about issues with armpit hair removal. Long story short, it got featured on an adult Japanese website before somehow landing in a secret file on Hunter's laptop. Any other questions?

OCTOBER MUSIC REVIEWS
OLIVIA RODRIGO Guts Geffen Records
Pastel pop-rocker Olivia Rodrigo is solidifying her dominance as a superstar with a gothic edge. She’s a Gen-Z Avril Lavigne/Britney Spears combo and it’s an explosive cocktail. Most of her chart-toppers center around an ex-boyfriend and his new lover, with daggers and darts being thrown. In lead single “Vampire,” Rodrigo stays on message, but her sound eases out of candy-pop and into moody, pop-rock. “You only come out at night/ I used to think I was smart/ But you made me look so naive/ The way you sold me for parts/ As you sunk your teeth into me, oh,” she bewitchingly blares. Just imagine Wednesday and Enid wreaking havoc on the beastly boys of Nevermore Academy to this blood-sucking rock opera. “Lacy” is full of milky-sweet whispers and jealousy-juiced lyrics while “Bad Idea Right?” is full of 90s/early 2000s teen movie flavor with the electric bass and guitar. Then there is “Teenage Dream,” a melodic treasure to inspire all those teens trying to shape their own futures. The breathy chorus and passionate pleas are deliciously chilling. I predict this pop princess will be selling out stadiums and generating millions for the U.S. economy like Taylor Swift in no time. -

RENEÉ RAPP Snow Angel Interscope Records
Reneé Rapp has proven she’s a dynamic performer from her star-making turn as a feisty Samantha Jones-esque co-ed and LGBTQIA+ icon on Showtime to cultivating this beautifully raw second studio album. It's the same project she ended up leaving her TV acting job to focus more on. It could also have something to do with her starring turn as Regina George in the upcoming Mean Girls: The Musical Movie in 2024. The point being, she’s a powerhouse in the making. Rapp exudes a fun, sexy confidence in this personal collection of music, whether the song is full of angst and grit or dreamy reflections. “Tummy Hurts” is a coffeehouse power tune; “Pretty Girls” is coolly angelic; “Talk Too Much” is saucy and full of fun, while “The Wedding Song” is sultry and sweet. My favorite: “Gemini Moon.” It’s the lyrically-satiating, goosebump-inducing kind of song that truly stays with you: “Never know who you're gonna get/ We're in love or we never met/ Sour lemons or cinnamon/ Every day I'm different/ I talk sh*t then I bite my tongue/ Moving in, then I'm on the run/ I exist on a pendulum/ Swingin' high or swingin' low.” I swing high on Rapp

QUAVO Rocket Power Motown/Quality Control Music
It’s an emotional and cathartic second solo album for Quavo, who dedicates the 18 tracks to his late nephew and Migos bandmate, Takeoff. The talented musician was murdered in a shooting last year, and it rattled the rap community. Quavo is generous with features as he tries to heal and make sense of everything. Future, Young Thug, BabyDrill and Hunxho all appear. Through the magic of music production, previously unreleased vocals from Takeoff appear on “Pattycake.” It’s a beautiful way to honor him. It’s reminiscent of Eminem’s ode to Juice World in “Godzilla.” Takeoff may be gone, but his artistry will last forever. Talented producers spun their powers on the tracks, including Kenny Beats Wheezy, Buddha Bless and DJ Durel. Quavo, a chameleon-like rapper, seamlessly slithers from his trio Migos to solo work. This second solo project is his most mature and reflective yet, while still giving us addictive and creative beats. Knockouts include “Greatness” and “Turn Yo Clic Up.” The chemical reaction between Quavo and Future is lab-worthy with its high-profile celebrity disses in the lyrics. Critics say the album could be shorter, but this was Quavo's therapy in the wake of tragedy and we’re lucky to be able to heal with him through this beautiful work of art. -
KRISTIN HERSH Clear Pond Road Fire Records
Marisa Patwa
Taking a break from her position as the leader of legendary alt-rock trio Throwing Muses and punk-influenced 50 Foot Wave, Kristin Hersh returns with her 11th solo effort, Clear Pond Road, the follow-up to 2018's Possible Dust Clouds. Where the latter presented a grungier version of Hersh's musical vision, this new batch of songs is primarily an acoustic affair in the vein of 2016's excellent Wyatt at the Coyote Palace. Upon first listen, however, it doesn't quite reach the same heights. But with each successive spin, this record's brilliance slowly unveils itself. Admittedly, "Ms. Haha" and "Constance Street" sound a bit like retreads, but lead single "Dandelion" is a spine-tingling example of Hersh's finger-picking prowess and melodic genius, while tracks like "St. Valentine's Day Massacre," "Reflections on the Motive Powers of Fire," "Palmetto" and "Tunnels" display her alluring dark side. Best of all might be "Eyeshine" with its haunting violin accompaniment and hypnotic 12-string chord progression. Hersh, delivering typically opaque lyrics throughout, periodically intones "I don't talk/ You don't talk/ We don't talk" in a manner that leaves you unsettled. It's classic Kristin.

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS Kings of the Asylum Nuclear Blast Records
Sometimes you just want gritty, nasty, straightforward, guitardriven rock & roll - nothing too fancy or over-produced. Devoid of finesse, yet chock-full of hooks and groove, Kings of the Asylum is the new album from Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons. A friend who recommended this record said that it's a “refreshing punch in the face.” I had no idea what this meant, so of course I had to listen to it. He was right. It's a rock & roll haymaker, and so damn cool. Campbell, the Welshman and former Motörhead guitarist, has teamed up with his three sons and vocalist Neil Starr to produce their best effort to date. You won’t find any ballads or instrumentals here, just 43 minutes of kickass burners. Check out “Strike the Match,” “Hammer and Dance,” “The Hunt” (the most Motörhead-like track of the bunch), “Maniac” and the title track. This one is just a lot a fun!

BLAST FROM THE PAST
BADLANDS
Badlands (1989)
Titanium/Atlantic
Fans of rock and metal will remember that guitarist Jake E. Lee had the unenviable job of stepping into Randy Rhoads’ shoes after the latter tragically died in a plane crash in 1982. Rhoads was the virtuoso who appeared on Ozzy Osbourne's highlysuccessful solo debut, Blizzard of Ozz, and its equally-lauded follow-up, Diary of a Madman Detractors, however, scorned 1983's Lee-helmed Bark at the Moon, but it catapulted the Ozzman to new commercial heights. 1986’s The Ultimate Sin further cemented Ozzy and manager/wife Sharon's reputation as major players in the music business. Unfortunately for Lee, it meant the end of his brief tenure in Ozzy’s band. The young and inexperienced guitarist had signed a contract with Sharon that allowed Ozzy to claim sole credit for all songwriting and royalties - Lee was simply an employee and was subsequently fired at the conclusion of Ozzy’s 1986-87 tour. Enter Badlands, Lee’s attempt to parlay his newfound fame into a new band. Rather than going solo, he brought in seasoned musicians like drummer Eric Singer (KISS, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper), and vocalist Ray Gillen. Badlands’ self-titled debut hit in 1989, and while not a commercial success, it became a cult classic, demonstrating what Lee was capable of when freed from the constraints of Ozzy’s regimented songwriting formula. Impressively, the album is a tour-de-force of hard rock, metal, funk and blues riffs and Lee’s unparalleled ability to create a groove and syncopation with his picking hand is on full display. The closest thing to a hit was the Ozzy-inspired “Dreams in the Dark,” but take a deeper dive and you’ll discover a creativity and originality that was in short supply by 1989. There are moments of beautiful acoustic pageantry and melodic interludes; there are snarling, grinding rhythms, melodic solos, and frenetic shredding; and there are moments of visceral emotion in Gillen’s vocal performances, but always it returns to the guitar sorcery of Lee. Just listen to “Winter’s Call” for an example of a song that carries the listener from calm soliloquy to a killer guitar hitch in the verse and bridge, to one of the most soaring and majestic guitar solo outros you’ll ever hear. - Matt

BLUES WITH BRAGIN
CHAD RUPP & THE SUGAR ROOTS
The Devil Won’t Get You Lightning in a Bottle Records
Portland's Chad Rupp & The Sugar Roots return with The Devil Won't Get You . Album opener “Even Money” features a blistering guitar riff from Rupp that sets the mood as Timmer Blakely lays down a funky bass line. Johnny Wheels shows up for a guest appearance on “Blues Men in Black.” His vocals and harmonica go hard as Rupp matches the intensity on the guitar. “I Got You” features Scott Franklin on saxophone and Joe-Mack McCarthy on trumpet as Rupp sings about looking out for a friend. Brady T. Goss shines on the keys on “Leopard For Your Love.”
The horn section returns with a great sound on “I’ve Been Thinking” as Valyria Arnold joins the group as a guest vocalist. “At the Candlelight Room” will get your toes tapping with Blakely’s superb bass playing. Jimi Bott’s drumming sets the tone on “Red Heads, Hair Dressers and Chicks Named Tiffany” as Rupp sings about certain women to avoid. “The Devil Won’t Get You” offers a funky groove that will start your body swaying with phenomenal work from the bass and horn players. Lloyd Jones serves as a duet partner with Arnold on “You’re Not My Baby” as Rupp plays a melancholy guitar riff. “Tighten It Up” closes the album as Andrew Matthew and Paula Bunion join the band on vocals for a song that sounds like a favorite from the 1950s - Paul Bragin

OCTOBER BEER REVIEWS
This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This pours a deep red with little head. Notes of caramel on the nose lead the way to more of the same on the palate. It is malty and smooth, with a nice mouthfeel and lightly carbonated. Slightly warming at 11% ABV, but not overly boozy. Smooth on the finish with a light bitterness, this is a wellbalanced ale to enjoy on a cool fall evening.
PAUL BRAGIN - 5
A decent off-white head crowns this opaque red ale and evaporates slowly. Sweet scents from the bourbon barrel aging process give the nose a pleasant smell. Similarly, a burst of sugary sweetness coats the tongue while drinking the beer and lingers in the finish. The alcohol in this beer will sneak up on you. Drink it in front of a roaring fire during the winter. Pair it with hearty dishes like barbecue, steak or caramel desserts.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a red-colored beer with good carbonation. It's a very smooth and creamy beer with a nice bourbon flavor and an 11% ABV - which is one of the highest I have experienced. I'm not usually a person who cares for a bourbon and beer mixture but lately I've been enjoying more bourbons.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5
This pours a clear light golden hue with a quickly dissipating head. A little bready on the nose, with a slightly malty taste on the palate. It's smooth and easy drinking with a hint of citrus and a light bitterness on the finish. I prefer to add a lime to accentuate the citrus, in typical fashion.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A decent white head forms on this lager but evaporates somewhat quickly. A good balance of sweet malt and bitter hops share the scent profile. The balance continues with the first sip of the beer as carbonation hits the tongue. This beer is a good choice for everyday drinking, especially on a warmer day in the sunshine. Pair it with a variety of dishes such as shellfish, light seafood, Southeast Asian food or Mexican food.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a golden-colored beer that's light and crisp and similar to a Mexican lager. In a way, it reminds me of a beer from the Budweiser family - just a good, solid beer. It's slightly bitter and has a decent balance of flavorsperfect for the last remaining warm days of the year.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25
This pours a hazy dark yellow with a thin white head. There are strong aromas of fruit punch on the nose. The fruitiness also packs a punch on the palate. It is light-bodied with medium carbonation and finishes with more fruit punch. A cross between a hazy IPA and a fruit beer, I’d call this a fruit IPA.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head rests on this hazy IPA and never totally evaporates. A burst of fruity hops fills the nose. Likewise, the initial tasting of the beer offers sweet fruit flavors reminiscent of fruit punch. People who enjoy IPAs as well as people who like fruity beers need to try this. The kid in you will love it. Pair it with fruit salad at breakfast or use it as an ingredient in pineapple upsidedown cake.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a hazy, straw-colored beer with an ABV of 9.5%. I can smell the fruit punch right away - and taste it, too. The finish seems to have a slight medicinal flavor, almost like cough syrup - but it's actually pretty good. Though I may need to revisit this beer when I'm not reviewing other offerings - might be even better then.

PACIFICO CLARA
NEW HOLLAND DRAGON'S MILK CRIMSON KEEP
NEW BELGIUM VOODOO RANGER FRUIT FORCE
SWEETWATER GONE TRIPPIN' PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75
This new SweetWater offering pours a muddy orange - it’s a bit hazy and has a thin white head. Stone fruit on the nose, that continues with a hint of mango on the palate. It has a light mouthfeel, it’s light on carbonation and finishes with a typical IPA bitterness.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head tops this IPA and remains for a long time. Fruity and bitter hops notes control the nose. More of the bitter hop flavors come through with the initial tasting, followed by a tug of war between fruit and bitterness in the very long finish.
People who are hoppy beer lovers need to find space for this in their refrigerator. Pair it with spicy dishes like Asian or Mexican cuisine.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a slightly hazy amber-colored beer with an ABV of 7%. The amount of hops for an IPA is on the lighter side which makes it very easy to drink - unlike some other IPAs I have previously reviewed. I've tried a few different SweetWater beers in the past and enjoyed them as well. This one did not disappoint.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: Obviously, all drivers are meant to carry insurance - but in the event that an accident occurs and a driver doesn't have proper insurance, what are his/her options? Should the driver contact a law firm to assist in handling the situation?
A:In Indiana, the minimum auto liability limit required by law is $25,000.00. If an at-fault driver causes an accident, often the value of harm caused will easily exceed such a low limit of liability insurance coverage. Moreover, a lot of drivers on the road today do not have any insurance at all.
If you cause an accident and you either have no car insurance or the harm caused exceeds your insurance liability limit, then you will be personally responsible for the damages caused. If this situation occurs, then you are obviously in a bad spot and
should consult an attorney immediately. You are courting financial disaster if you find yourself in this quagmire.
To prevent such a situation, you should obtain car insurance and discuss with a competent insurance agent the appropriate level of coverage. Please keep in mind that you also want, if possible, to carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in case you are injured due to the fault of an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
Finally, there is a type of insurance known

as “umbrella” insurance coverage. Umbrella coverage normally does not provide additional types of car insurance, but umbrella insurance “lifts” the auto coverage limits. Umbrella coverage is relatively inexpensive for the safety it provides you and your family.
I hope you are never in a serious car collision, but if you are then the type and amount of insurance coverage you have can make all the difference in the world. Please be guided accordingly.
