MULTI-PLATINUM ROCK BAND MAKING EVANSVILLE STOP IN SUPPORT OF DIVISIVE
W
ith a career spanning nearly three decades now, Disturbed's reign as one of rock's most in-demand acts sees no end in sight. The Chicago-based band formed
in the mid-90s but it took a number of years to get their debut album recorded and released, eventually selling over four million copies of 2000's The Sickness which introduced the unique vocal stylings
of frontman David Draiman to the masses. Singles like "Down with the Sickness" and "Stupify" went down a storm on rock radio, but they were just getting started. In succession, Disturbed scored four subsequent number one albums in Believe (2002), Ten Thousand Fists (2005), Indestructible (2008) and Asylum (2010), before going on hiatus in 2011. Since reforming in 2015, Disturbed has continued to rip it up - and surprise fans, too. The band unexpectedly scored their biggest single to date with a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" off of Immortalized, a bold choice that perfectly highlighted Draiman's striking baritone vocals. On YouTube alone, the official video has reached nearly a billion views. Disturbed's eighth album, Divisive, released in late 2022, saw the band return to its angry roots, taking on the hot topics of the day, from the pandemic to political division and beyond. The music, in turn, matches the lyrical aggression - it's their heaviest sounding record in years. And the fans are clearly loving it as Disturbed continues to tour Divisive, currently with support from Falling in Reverse and Plush. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. ANDREW BAUM CORDUROY ORBISON DRUMMER DROPS SOUL-BARING SOLO DEBUT
A
s the drummer for indie rock stalwarts Corduroy Orbison, Andrew Baum's provided the backbeat for some of the best original music produced in the tri-state over the
last several years, including 2021's adventurous opus Never Again which raised the bar for local releases. It's important to note here that Baum does more than just hold down the Orbison groove; he contributes both individually and collaboratively to the band's songwriting process. But after the recent passing of a close friend, Baum found that his writing turned inward - the heart-wrenching loss became his sole lyrical focus which presented a conundrum of sorts. "I wanted to get these [songs] off my chest but I didn’t necessarily see them as Corduroy songs," he says. "I thought if I could just get these out there, I could creatively move on a little and contribute more writing to the band." With the release of Whimsical Tuesdays, Baum's soul-baring solo debut, he's done just that. Appropriately, it's a virtually autonomous effort; he wrote, recorded and produced the record which, with its scratchy soundtrack and old-school folk approach, brings to mind the desolate days of the Dust Bowl/Depression era on tracks like "15 Years," "Cassoday," "Fast Asleep," "Never Too Far" and "Don't Look Up Here," but also edges towards Neil Young territory on "Orfic Midland." Baum's striking vocals, removed from the Orbison mix, are a revelation, influenced by the aforementioned Canadian legend, Dylan and Prine, among others. In truth, the album title is a bit of a misnomer - the atmosphere here is dark and there's a sense of helplessness at times. But ultimately, Whimsical Tuesdays is a therapeutic journey filled with more beauty than pain. Whimsical Tuesdays is available on major streaming platforms.

He's back with another all-out jam, but this time it's about the special partnership he maintains with his wife, honoring the couple's unbreakable bond via "Can't Fade Us," a title that pretty much speaks for itself. What's more, the track not only takes a totally different lyrical tact from "On a Boat," musically, it ventures outside the box, too, featuring an almost orientalsounding acoustic foundation and a striking vocal sample that borders on operatic - unorthodox in the best

way. Over a mid-tempo groove, J.J. gives heartfelt props to his gal: "I'm so glad that I gotcha by my side/ Because through all them tough times/ You remain my ride or die/ We've grown together/ Growing old together/ Even when the doubters doubt us/ We just weather the weather..." Released in late December, "Can't Fade Us" looks to be another regional smash. If all goes well and the song takes off, J.J. plans to make an extended version with a second verse. Gotta hand it to him for operating completely independently, continuing to write, record and mix all his own material, while also filming and editing his own videos. That's how you get things done artistically these days. Show your support for J.J.'s hard work and check out "Can't Fade Us" on major streaming platforms. NEWS4U JANUARY 2024 | BOOK REVIEW
BEACH READ by Emily Henry I wanted to begin 2024 with a book review that renewed my love of reading. I’d say romance is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. You shouldn’t feel guilty about what makes you happy - and that’s the romance genre for me. BookTok captured me with Beach Read by Emily Henry as I had seen constant reviews on my For You Page, so I had to see what the fuss was about, and I’m glad I did. I related to the characters January and Gus in different ways. I saw myself in January, a hopeless romantic who wants to be the best at what she does and hates criticism. I saw myself in Gus, someone who keeps his guard up and is afraid to let people in, even when he doesn’t realize it. Pete and Maggie were wonderful. Shadi felt like my own best friend. The parallels between January and Sonya toward the end were amazing. This was one book I was unable to put down, and eventually listened to a reader-curated Beach Read playlist on Spotify while I was reading the book. That’s when I know I’m personally invested in a novel. I could say so many wonderful things about Beach Read but it’s really up to you to find out for yourself. My wish for you heading into the new year is to read what makes you happy and don’t worry about feeling ashamed about it. Reading for pleasure is just that - if it gives you pleasure, that’s all that matters. - Karah Wilson

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER
JUNG YOO-JUNG: TRUE CRIME FANATIC TURNED KILLER
T
his month's case study is a lesson in obsession - about how an interest in true crime spiraled out of control. While most
of us who follow the reporting of high-profile murders are simply intrigued by the psychology of criminals and have no intention of ever committing such a heinous act, for Jung Yoo-Jung, an unemployed 23-year-old South Korean woman, the curiosity of what it's like to kill another human being consumed her mind, leading to a tragic, senseless death. In fact, despite later claiming that she had suffered hallucinations and a mental disorder, Jung carefully researched and planned the attack on an English language teacher over a period of several months, methodically searching for the right person to victimize. The crime was clearly premeditated by an individual who was focused and determined. Using an online tutoring app, Jung Yoo-Jung corresponded with more than 50 potential victims, posing as the mother of a high school student interested in scheduling lessons for her child. She targeted females, primarily - especially those that worked from home. Eventually, in May of 2023, Jung zeroed in on a 26-year-old woman living in the southeastern city of Busan. She donned a school uniform purchased online, headed to the tutor's home and, once inside, proceeded to stab her more than 100 times, continuing to strike post-mortem. Jung then dismembered the body, shoved it into a suitcase and took a taxi to dump the remains near a river. Just one problem: the
driver couldn't help but notice the blood soaking through said suitcase. He notified the police and Jung was taken into custody.
"

told police that she only moved the body after someone else had killed the tutor), as previously noted, Jung attempted to blame her actions on a mental disorder and pleaded for leniency. Lucky for her, South Korea frowns on the death penalty, having last executed someone in 1997. Still, she was given a life sentence which should give Jung plenty of time to ponder how her true crime obsession destroyed two lives.

EACH MONTH WE’LL BE CHECKING IN WITH THE VHS FOR THE LATEST GOOD NEWS AND TO HELP FIND FUREVER HOMES FOR SOME OF THEIR MORE UNIQUE AND OLDER RESIDENTS
THINKING ABOUT ADOPTION? HERE'S HOW YOU CAN REACH US!
NOVA: Nova – a term given to bright stars that appear suddenly in the sky and release powerful energy. It also happens to be the most fitting name for this 6-year-old cattle dog mix at the VHS! Nova’s personality doesn’t tend to shine when she’s sitting in a kennel and she presents herself as very shy and fearful. Get her with some friendly humans that she’s familiar with, however, and she’s a happy, zoomie girl! Nova’s ideal home is one familiar with cattle dogs and will work to keep her mind and body busy. Her $150 adoption fee includes her spay, microchip and up-to-date vaccines.

MERCURY: Looking for a pet that’s out of this world? Meet Mercury, a 3-year-old male Lionhead. Docile and cuddly, one volunteer claims he’s really a Flemish Giant at heart! At 8 pounds, Mercury is slightly overweight and

should weigh in at about 5. He will need a home that is ready to start him on a weight-loss journey with room to safely run around and exercise. Sound like the right fit for you? Apply for Mercury online at vhslifesaver.org! His $50 adoption fee includes his neuter and registered microchip.
ADOPTION HOURS TUES-SAT FROM NOON- 6PM TUSCANY: Meet Tuscany! Her and her siblings found themselves at Evansville Animal Care & Control very sick. Sadly, little Tuscany was the only one that made it. The following weeks were rough – two types of antibiotics, supplemental oxygen, fluids, syringe feeding, and breathing treatments every 4 hours. She struggled greatly to breathe and could only be out of the incubator to be fed and medicated. Thanks to a team of all-star fosters, however, she is out of the woods and ready to live! You can adopt Tuscany, or choose from lots of other similar kittens, for just $80. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip and up-to-date vaccinations – apply online at vhslifesaver.org!

VINCE CLARKE Songs of Silence Mute An absolute legend of the synth-pop genre, Vince Clarke's musical résumé is virtually unimpeachable. As a founding member of Depeche

which features in U.S. TV commercials to this day (not to mention it's being played as an encore by the post-Clarke DM lineup on their current world tour). But Clarke quickly tired of the group dynamic; a notorious loner, he left Depeche Mode just as success came calling, choosing instead to form a studio-based duo with blues singer Alison Moyet. It was an unlikely pairing on the surface, but Clarke's cold electronic soundtrack played brilliantly off of her husky, soulful vocals. Together, they produced
Boston-based
two synth-pop masterpieces in 1982's buoyant, danceable Upstairs at Eric's and its brooding, darker follow-up, 1983's You and Me Both. History then repeated itself, however, as Clarke once again jetted prematurely. Next came a couple of brief side projects, most notably The Assembly, which saw him team up with former Undertones frontman Feargal Sharkey for a fantastic one-off single, "Never Never," in late 1983. Two years later, at long last, Clarke settled down, as it were, discovering his musical soulmate Andy Bell via a Melody Maker advertisement and forming the hugely successful synth-pop outfit Erasure in 1985. Nearly 40 years later, the duo have scored close to 40 UK hit songs and there's more to come, it seems. But despite Clarke's loyalty to Bell, he's found the odd occasion to branch out, even partnering with his old Depeche Mode bandmate Martin Gore for 2012's techno-inspired Ssss under the banner VCMG. And a decade on, Clarke has once again strayed - this time as a full-on solo artist - with Songs of Silence, a deeply engrossing collection of instrumentals written and recorded during the pandemic, each track based around a single droning note. Might sound dull on paper; yet Clarke proves his electronic mettle here, working exclusively with Eurorack, a modular synthesizer format that he uses to icy effect, creating chilling ambient pieces that could serve as the score to an imaginary sci-fi classic. In a career full of remarkable highs, Songs of Silence may have reached the peak. - Johnny Fletcher

Rosenblatt to shine on the harmonica. “Black Cat Bone,” another instrumental tune, features tight drumming from Chuck Purro and a beat similar to the legendary Bo Diddley. Heavy guitar from Paul Lenart comes to the forefront on “Blues Beyond Midnight” as Rosenblatt adds a melancholy harmonica. “Drivin’ a Fast Car” seems to blur the line between blues and heavy metal. The Latin influence definitely comes through on “Texical Mojo” as Bill “Coach” Mather offers phenomenal bass playing.

In the pantheon of old school punk bands, Washington D.C.'s Minor Threat sits right at the top, alongside the likes of Bad Brains, Black Flag, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols. All these years later, frontman Ian MacKaye's impassioned screams still send chills up the spine - but while his bottled-up rage came spewing out in manic spurts on such intense tracks as 1981's "Filler" and "In My Eyes," it was never at the expense of the hooks. Minor Threat simply wrote great songs, period. That includes one of the band's all-time classics, 1983's "Out of Step," which famously featured MacKaye opining on his sense of alienation from society: "I don't smoke/ Don't drink/ Don't f***/ At least I can f***ing think!" Those four pointed lines, while hardly fighting words, effectively set off a bomb in the punk world at the time, as many fans took offense to the perceived preachy nature of the lyrics. But that's what made Minor Threat so unique - there was no punk agenda, just honesty. Four decades later, Dischord Records has blessed us with a 45 of three outtakes from the "Out of Step" sessions when the band added a fourth member for extra musical heft. Here we get beefed-up versions of the aforementioned "Filler" and "In My Eyes," plus a previously unreleased expanded version of the instrumental "Addams Family." Genius - Johnny Fletcher

All of the instruments fit together nicely on “Jokers Blues,” a song that will start your toes tapping. Another stellar drumming performance from Purro sets the tone very well on “Possum Blues” and complements Mather's bass. “Rona Stomp” features another Latin-inspired groove. The album closes with “Rockin’ the Blues,” another song where Rosenblatt’s harmonica steals the show. Fans of West Coast blues need to listen to this album. - Paul Bragin

DRAGON'S MILK TALES OF GOLD
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
ELYSIAN SPACE DUST IPA
QUAFF ON! PEANUT BUTTER BUSTED KNUCKLE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5
This pours a slightly hazy yellow-orange, with a reasonable head. It has an old school IPA aroma, with an abundance of pine resin. On the palate the pine continues, with a hint of tropical essence. Old school IPA bitterness on the finish makes this a perfect beer for the IPA lover, not to mention the 8.2% ABV.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5
This pours a clear golden hue with a thin head. It is boozy and sweet on the nose, with strong notes of bourbon. It is warm on the palate with distinct bourbon flavors, very malty, and a medium to heavy body. It has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, and finishes strong with little bitterness for a beer with an 11% ABV.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
This porter pours a very dark brown (almost black), with a caramel head. Peanut butter and vanilla notes dominate the nose. Those flavors continue on the palate with the addition of a bit of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel and a touch of sweetness, finishing with a bit of dark chocolate bitterness. This is a very approachable dark beer with a 7.2% ABV, suitable anytime or as a dessert.
A thin white head crowns this beer and begins to evaporate. Sweet notes from the milk sugar added during the brewing dominate the nose. Likewise, sweet sugar flavors hit the tongue first and stay in the long finish while some hop bitterness also comes on the palate. Drink this beer by a roaring fire during the cold winter months. Pair it with cuisines like Italian and Middle Eastern, earthy cheeses like Camembert and Fontina or chocolate.
A thick white head forms on this IPA and never totally evaporates. A generous amount of hops dominates the scent profile. The bitterness from the hops remains while drinking the beer and stays for a long time In the finish. People who enjoy hop-heavy IPAs need to stock these in the refrigerator. Pair it with a variety of foods such as curry, Thai dishes, or cheese like pepper Jack, Gorgonzola or sharp Cheddar.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4 JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a slightly hazy amber-colored beer. It's very smooth and I can taste the bourbon barrel influences. As noted above, this would make an ideal beer for the cold winter months - especially with the ampedup ABV of 11%. Sure to warm you up in a jiffy. Just be careful not to overdo it.
This is a slightly cloudy golden-colored beer with decent carbonation - and it comes in a huge 19.2 oz can. It's full of hops flavor and with that comes a big wave of bitterness. This is Elysian's version of 3 Floyds' Zombie Dust and I would say they're pretty much the same.
56 | JANUARY 2024 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5 A thick tan head rests on this stout and takes time to disappear. Notes of peanut butter used during the brewing process and sweet malt fill the nose. Similarly, the peanut butter remains with the first tasting of the beer, followed by a balance of peanut butter and malt. Fans of peanut butter cups will enjoy this beer. Pair it with roasted or grilled meats, Gruyere cheese or peanut butter chocolate cookies for dessert.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4 This is a dark black beer which I was not expecting - thought it would be a brown color. With a beer this dark I was expecting a little more bitterness but I'm pleasantly surprised. It's actually very smooth and easy to drink. Still, I thought there would be a little more peanut butter flavor and that's why I rated it a 4.
SIERRA NEVADA TROPICAL LITTLE THING IPA
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.75
This pours a hazy orange with a moderate head. Tropical notes, including mango and pineapple, dominate the nose. Loads of nice tropical flavors on the palate without tasting fruity. It is perfectly balanced with a light to medium body and a 7% ABV.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A thick white head tops this hazy IPA and evaporates very slowly. A healthy amount of citrus scent from the hops comes through quickly. The taste contains a somewhat more muted hop presence at first, but the citrus notes from the hops
stick around in the extended finish. Hopheads who enjoy IPAs will want to drink this. Pair it with foods like fried chicken, hamburgers, potato chips or corn on the cob.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a hazy golden-colored beer. It has a light hops aroma. It's very smooth to drink for an IPA which impresses me. It has a 7% ABV and a nice, balanced citrus flavor without the hops bitterness overpowering the flavors. I'd say it's one of the best IPAs I've had in a while.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

WITH LANE SIESKY / SIESKY LAW FIRM, PC
Focusing on personal injury, civil litigation, whistleblower claims and workers' compensation law, Siesky Law Firm strives to provide excellent legal services while remaining client and community centered. The Evansville-based trio of top attorneys - including Lane Siesky, Daniel Gearhart and Douglas Briody - boasts years of invaluable experience inside and outside the courtroom. Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.
Q: Now that 2023 has come to a close, I'm curious if you noticed any trends in the types of cases that Siesky Law Firm handled over the last year. From year to year, do you notice particular trends in the types of cases that are filed/presented?
A:
Siesky Law Firm first opened seventeen (17) years ago. An advantage to having been in business for that long is that we are able to go back and look at trends with cases. Over the last year, we have seen a marked increase in the number of nursing home abuse cases and in the number of child abuse and molestation cases in daycare and school settings. As both a lawyer and a human being, these trends are alarming. So, the next logical thought is why. Why are we seeing so many nursing home abuse and daycare and school child abuse and molestation cases? Although we do not know for sure, we suspect the increase in these abuse cases is that there is
a shortage of workers, so short-staffed nursing homes and daycares fail to properly monitor workers, the elderly, and children. In addition, companies are not spending the time and money necessary to have the proper policies and procedures to prevent abuse. Hopefully, 2024 will bring a reversal in the trend of the number of abuse cases. In the meantime, Siesky Law Firm will work to hold nursing homes, daycares and schools accountable and to force them to spend the time and money necessary to be well-staffed and to have the proper policies and procedures to deter abuse.
