"Windows Down" off the new album tells the

tale of someone experiencing a divine moment out on the highway. Is it based on personal experience?

It's actually my wife's [Emily's] testimony. It's a true story and took place in the driver's seat of a car on the side of a highway in Rhode Island, so we just tried to kind of capture that moment. It's funny - initially we wrote it and it had more of a generic second verse. And we started performing

the song out live and what I would do is tell my wife's testimony and sort of with a bit of showmanship kind of reveal that she's now celebrating five years of sobriety. And that unlocks, like, a lot of freedom in the crowd, because you're either struggling with that or know somebody who is. So it really opens the doors in the room for God to move - and once we started doing that we went back and rewrote the second verse to make it even more specifically about Emily's story. If I had to pick a favorite track off Jesus Music, it would be "Trouble" with its incredible vocal layering during the chorus.

Thanks - yeah, I've gotten in the habit of saying "Trouble" is musically the best song on the record. Different people connect to different things but from a reference standpoint, it's got all my Beatles stuff in it; it's got my "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" in there. From the vocal layering standpoint... we have a unique opportunity because the high-end of my range overlaps with the low-end of Taylor's range in a nice way. And so we're able to sort of pass the baton back and forth within a song. And so this one took a bit of choreography, but the reason it's layered so much is because I'm not singing the melody on the "trouble" part of the hook but I am singing the melody on the second half of the phrase. We had to figure out how to stack it up where we could still pull it off and it takes a little practice. I'm excited to start playing that one live. Album closer "Lifeline" serves as a great bookend, seemingly referencing Fleetwood Mac's classic "Landslide" with its acoustic approach and Taylor's heartfelt vocals.

Yeah, thank you! I feel so seen by that [remark]. If you go digging through the archives, "Landslide" is a cover that we used to do. So, the story on us is that we were not going to pursue music professionally. But we had a version of that cover out on our YouTube [channel]. We would play it live and people would come up to us afterwards and say, 'Are you guys a worship band? Are you a Christian band?' And so we've always wanted our own version of it ["Landslide"], so I was really thankful that we got in the room and it sort of went this direction. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com or jamtour.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

W

e all think it can't

possibly happen to someone we know, but every day, approximately 2300 people are reported missing across the country. As anyone who's experienced this unfortunate situation with a family member or friend can attest, there are few things more difficult than waiting to hear what has happened to a loved one - it's a helpless feeling that never goes away. Yet there is hope. This month, in an effort to focus the country's attention on such a troubling issue, February 3rd has been deemed National Missing Persons Day. The ultimate goal is for someone out there to recognize a missing person and bring closure to a family that's been dealing with the loss of a loved one. Here at News 4U, we have been following and reporting on the case of Dawnita Wilkerson, a local mother of six who's been missing since June of 2020. A $5000 reward is being offered to encourage anyone who has information to come forward. You may call the tipline at 812-435-6194 or email finddawnitawilkerson@gmail.com.

"The first date we went on, we got the receipt at the restaurant and she said, 'Look, 206', Merritt recalls. "Then that number started popping up everywhere. I finally asked her about it and she said ever since she was a kid that number had been popping up." Later, after the break-up, on a day-off from a tour in Wisconsin, Merritt visited a palm reader who explained that 206 is a redemption number, signaling an opportunity for growth. "I thought that was so odd, because that's what that relationship was," he reflects. "I've very much healed and moved on - and she has, too. This record's not about looking back."

Recorded in Nashville at Wild Feather Recording over a period of 18 months, 206 serves as a fantastic follow-up to 2020's Reynolds Station - also a concept album which documented Merritt's often difficult childhood growing up in western Kentucky. If anything, his songwriting has only improved here - both singles, while lyrically dichotomous, show his true gift for crafting musical and vocal hooks. In fact, the videos for "Give It to Me" and "Easier Alone" have each racked up nearly 200,000 views online and counting; the former, frustratingly, even came within a whisker of being added to rotation on CMT. Unfazed, Merritt recently performed "Easier Alone" on Local Lifestyles - a flawless rendition highlighted by his pure, unmistakable baritone. Let it be said that host Ange Humphrey was beyond impressed. As previously noted, 206 arrives on February 6 - a release date chosen to drive home the numerology angle - available both on major streaming platforms and CD. TRUE CRIME JUNKIE WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER

RUBY FRANKE: INFLUENCER TURNED CHILD ABUSER

I

n the world of true crime, the most fascinating case continues to be Indiana's own Delphi murders mystery involving the deaths of two teenage girls,

Abigail Williams and Liberty German. Suspect Richard Allen still sits behind bars awaiting trial; however, the drama behind the scenes keeps escalating. Soon the state's Supreme Court will hear oral arguments regarding Allen's request to reinstate his defense team which resigned - or was coerced to resign - several months ago. More on that as things develop, but in the meantime, here's a particularly disturbing case that grabbed media headlines when social media influencer Ruby Franke was charged with six counts of felony child abuse in August of 2023. The Utah mother of six, known for her YouTube channel "8 Passengers," made millions disseminating parental advice and projecting an idyllic family life. In truth, she was routinely subjecting her children to both mental and physical abuse via the assistance of business partner Jodi Hildebrandt. Finally, authorities - thanks to the bravery of Franke's 12-yearold son - put an end to the suffering, arresting the internet star and ending her reign of terror. Between 2015 and 2020, Franke uploaded multiple videos per week online, documenting the everyday happenings in the Franke household with a focus on the parenting of her six children. The channel, bafflingly, amassed one billion views; however, with success came controversy. To the chagrin of many viewers, Franke's overly-strict disciplining became a constant theme tactics such as depriving her kids of food and proper bedding seemed completely unnecessary and harsh. As such, the channel's popularity waned; in addition,

a change.org petition was launched to draw attention to the apparently abusive environment. Following the decline, Franke's husband Kevin moved out. Franke, in turn, ceased operation of "8 Passengers" and began working as a mental health coach at Connexions, a company run by counselor Jodi Hildebrandt. The two shared a delusional, narcissistic mindset, quickly partnering for a new YouTube channel and Instagram account called Moms of Truth - hypocrisy at its finest. Sadly for the Franke children, the reality was brutal. Behind closed doors they were being mistreated by both women - often bound by duct tape - and malnourished.

After moving out on his own at the age of 18, Nutter struggled a bit financially which made it difficult to properly care for a pet; however, he'd soon right the ship - and also meet his future wife, Rianna, a fellow animal lover - which opened the door to rescuing Milo the cat from a shelter in Kentucky. That was back in 2011. Later the same year, the couple adopted an Olde English Bulldogge named Millie. Both animals would eventually succumb to cancer, sadly - the latter in 2022, after a

"He started doing this fun bouncing when he gets excited," Rianna notes with a laugh. Week five, however, proved to be the real turning point. That's when a meet & greet was scheduled with a prospective adopter. "We were petrified of Brandon not coming home with us - that was our sign that he belonged with us," Tim says. Of course, we're still 10 months away; seems silly to get all worked up about it now. No matter what happens, I'm confident that no one will move to Canada; no state will secede. Even with all the BS, America's still the bomb. *UPDATE: Trump, as expected, won in a

landslide and DeSantis actually came in second. On to New Hampshire...

AND I'M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, DESPITE THEIR MANY DIFFERENCES, SEE EYE-TO-EYE ON AT LEAST ONE THING: ARMAGEDDON IS APPROACHING.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of tri-state Swifties, Taylor's sourpuss face in response to a completely harmless jab about the number of times the camera pans to her at Chiefs' games came across rather poorly. Now, to be fair, she was hardly the only celebrity devoid of a sense of humor at the Globes that night; still, Taylor should know better. Even if the joke is lame, just put a good face on for the camera otherwise, you end up looking like a prat. Furthermore, she's darn lucky Ricky Gervais wasn't hosting. If Taylor couldn't take a mild-mannered poke from Jo Koy, she'd have stood no chance against the master of celebrity takedowns.

NEWS4U FEBRUARY 2024 | MUSIC REVIEWS CHECK OUT THESE

FEBRUARY MUSIC REVIEWS KID CUDI Insano Wicked Awesome Records/ Republic Records Kid Cudi has the kind of insatiable energy that never gets old and his iconic essence rages through his ninth studio album. To top off his latest musical feat, he has features out the wazoo from Lil Wayne, ASAP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, Lil Yachty, Young Thug and XXXTentacion. When you’ve made a successful career for yourself over a decade, why not have some fun with a group of friends? Standouts include singles “Porsche Topless,” which touts a bountiful production, and synth-heavy “At the Party.” The latter shows how he balances his silly and serious sides, jumping from lyrics like “We was just there at the party, she was drinking prolly/ She serious not sorry" to “Walked in, I failed and I crumbled, knew I was a broken man (shh)/ Bleed in the scene, I can achieve.” Kid Cudi is serving up effortlessly cool and soulful vibes and you’d be insano not to love his music. - Marisa Patwa

HONEST REVIEWS OF SOME OF THE HOTTEST NEW ALBUMS IN MUSIC

¥$ (KANYE WEST & TY DOLLA SIGN) Vultures Self-released Kanye West may be a polarizing figure, but the truth is his artistry is unmatched. Yeezey knows this, so it’s surprising he collaborated with fellow rapper Ty Dolla Sign on their first album together as duo ¥$. They even pulled in some help from heavyweights like Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Kodak Black, Quavo, Tyga, Young Thug, Future and Rich the Kid. Lead single “Vultures” is very reminiscent of Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak phase, and one of my favorites of his many musical eras. His use of Auto-tune and electro-hip/hop is addicting. Yeezy is known for giving us surprises; here, he and Ty Dolla Sign not just sample, but completely retool, the Backstreet Boys' “Everybody” which is something completely unexpected. Plot twist: it’s pure gold. Although I disagree with Yeezy’s polarizing political and social views, I’ll never disagree that he’s one of the best artists of our generation. Mix in some Ty Dolla Sign and this is a true moneymaker. - Marisa Patwa

Rock music may not be at the top

Tip-toeing in from a faraway place with

of my Wrapped Spotify but Green Day has had my heart since I first listened to American Idiot in fifth grade. Their 14th studio album does not disappoint, continuing their long legacy of pumping up the youth. The true standout is power-rock anthem “The American Dream is Killing Me,” with its poignant lyrics about our warped values in society: “The American Dream is killing me/ People on the street/ Unemployed and obsolete/ Did you ever learn to read the ransom note?/ Don't want no huddled masses/ TikTok and taxes/ Under the overpass/ Sleeping in broken glass.” It’s the same kind of gut-wrenching angst I first heard in 2004, but with an updated commentary to fit our still twisted times. Billie Joel Armstrong is truly a rock poet on “Look Ma, No Brains!,” singing, “Slam danced on my face again/ Nonsense is my heroin/ Rude boy going comatose/ Drop out and I'm adios.” He leads the band with such passion and purpose that it’s no wonder Green Day has been our musical savior for decades.

an acoustic guitar, Lightbringer made me check my settings and connections to see what I had wrong. As it grew dynamically, I realized everything was quite correct as I was brought in from somewhere else, a place that I learned was the previous album (released just months before), a companion called Darkfighter. I was ill-prepared for the explosion of refined, magnificent 70s hard rock that dragged me willingly through the hedgerows of Zeppelin, sails of Styx, roundabouts of Yes, hazes of Hendrix, the beginnings of Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the mystics of Van Morrison. One would be hard-pressed to find a more passionate and powerful frontman than Jay Buchanan, who fits the role so well that one would think he had been in storage for 50 years. Although this album has only six songs, it is more than an EP complement to its companion. In reality, it has a near full-length running time due to the soaring and ambitiously lengthy tracks. And if you think a 9-minute opener would drone on and lose your interest, you would be sorely mistaken. This whole album is a helluva ride that is equally lush and sparse in all the right places. - Lindsey Williams

Singer Rob Halford and the guys, touched as they were to receive such an honor, simply went right back to work, prepping material for the next album. No retirement plan here, in other words. metal. Then again, when you've got Halford - who now resembles a leather-clad Santa of sorts with his bushy white beard - at the mic, you're already miles ahead of the competition. Incredibly, at age 72, the rock icon sounds as ferocious as ever, routinely hitting notes that no other vocalist in the genre can touch - or even dares to attempt. In tandem, the guitar work by Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner is superlative, striking the perfect balance between high-octane riffing and complex, sweeping passages. No doubt Invincible Shield serves as a fitting title, because this band is bullet proof. - Johnny Fletcher

modern take on the blues by incorporating elements of Texas roots music, funk and jazz punctuated by AfroCaribbean rhythms, Willie J Laws Jr. is a force to be reckoned with. "Sledgehammer," Peter Gabriel's 1986 worldwide smash, to be the singer's debut single. In reality, the mercurial musician served as the original frontman for UK progressive rock act Genesis (back before Phil Collins sprang from behind the drum kit and took the band in a more mainstream direction with his soulful vocals) and released four groundbreaking solo albums featuring such classic tracks as "Solsbury Hill," "Games Without Frontiers," "Biko" and "Shock the Monkey" - all before 1983. None of his pre-"Sledgehammer" work, despite being quite brilliant at times, made much of an impact in the States, so when Gabriel appeared several years later with a megahit and award-winning video that played ad nauseam on MTV, he might as well have been a brand new artist. He certainly sounded like one. Compare the pop sensibility apparent in "Sledgehammer" and its accompanying album So to the musically out-there early days of Genesis and it's clear that Gabriel made a conscious effort to play it safer, for better or worse. (Bear in mind, in 1972 the man once wore a fox head and red dress on stage. It's all relative.) Fast-forward nearly four decades since the big breakthrough and we're gifted i/o - only the fifth post-So album from Gabriel to see the light of day - which cleverly bridges the gap between his early solo efforts and more melodic periods. In some ways it errs more towards his darker side, as heard on the haunting "Four Kinds of Horses," but also fully embraces life on the Brian Eno co-write "Road to Joy." One thing remains the same: Gabriel knows how to arrange a song. No matter the atmosphere of the track, he fits the pieces together like a glorious musical puzzle; patience on the part of the listener is duly rewarded once the picture becomes clear. Thus, it's easy to forgive Gabriel for dropping a new release about as often as cicadas emerge from the ground. Genius takes time. - Johnny Fletcher

the upbeat tempo and phenomenal horn playing from Erik Lawrence and Mark Berney, the protest song “Getcha Knee Off My Neck” sends a powerful message about working for justice. “Love Before You Die” boasts a jazzy feel on the song co-written by Laws and Brathwaite. “I Want To Be Loved,” a Willie Dixon cover, sounds like something straight out of the 1970s as Vasileva serves up another funky bass line. Guest appearances from Jerry Portnoy on harmonica and Paul Nelson on slide guitar on “Sorry Charlie” complement the rest of the band very well. The guitar playing on the title track sounds eerily reminiscent of B.B. King and is a wonderful tribute to the legend. “You Don’t Love Me” allows the band to groove together nicely. Mattson’s keys shine through on “Ain’t Going to Texas.” “The Right” features more great bass from Vasileva. The album closes with a cover of “Who’s That Lady” by the Isley Brothers. NEWS4U FEBRUARY 2024 | BEER REVIEWS

FEBRUARY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. VICTORIA VICKY CHAMOY

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

I needed to do some research to learn what this reddish-orange beverage was. To be brief, chamoy is a Mexican sauce made with pickled fruits and chili powder. This beer is a chelada (lager/lime/salt mixture), but in this case the chamoy replaces the salt. It is fruity (I tasted apricot, but also sweet potato or yam), spicy (chili), salty and tangy (lime). This low ABV beverage (3.5%) is perhaps ideal for a warmer climate. If you like a chelada, you should give this a try.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A thick white head tops this pinkish beer and evaporates somewhat quickly. The beer offers scents of tamarind and lime. The first sip gives more tamarind and lime, with salt and tomato coming through in the finish similar to a Bloody Mary. Drink during Sunday brunch instead of a Bloody Mary for something different. Use it as an ingredient in Mexican dishes with red sauce for an extra kick or add it to a Bloody Mary.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is an apricot-colored beer that's a little spicy and seems like a twisted V8. It comes in a huge 24 oz can with an ABV of 3.5%. I think this would be a healthy alternative to alcoholic drinks because it tastes like it has some vegetable flavors like tomato, peppers and more.

GOOSE ISLAND IPA

TERRAPIN WHITE CHOCOLATE MOO-HOO

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

This IPA pours a clear orange/yellow hue, with powerful notes of grapefruit on the nose. This is a traditional IPA, with lots of grapefruit flavors on the palate and distinct bitterness on the finish. This is an IPA for IPA lovers, and like most beer that comes out of Goose Island, it is a solid choice.

A decent white head forms on this IPA and evaporates slowly. The scent contains a generous amount of hops. Similarly, the initial tasting of the beer boasts a significant grapefruit flavor from the hops that continues in the very long finish. People who enjoy hoppy IPAs need to give this beer a spot in the refrigerator. Pair it with a wide variety of foods like blue cheese or desserts like carrot cake and spice cake.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear amber-colored beer. It has a nice bitter hops flavor with an accent of grapefruit, plus a nice balance of hops and malts to go along with the 5.9% ABV. Goose island always puts out solid beers and this one does not disappoint. Might be one of my favorite IPAs it's a nice session beer, nothing flashy.

56 | FEBRUARY 2024 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

This stout pours a midnight black with a creamy tan head. Notes of chocolate are clear on the nose. Chocolate and a sweetness that is not overpowering is present on the palate, giving it smooth, creamy white chocolate flavors. Very low bitterness makes this a great dessert beer.

A thick tan head crowns this stout and dissipates very gradually. Roasted malt and chocolate sweetness control the nose. The roasted malt and chocolate remain during the tasting, with the two going back and forth in the long finish. Drinkers who enjoy stouts and chocolate need to try this. Pair it with a variety of foods such as aged Sonoma Jack or gouda cheese, a rich stew with a Moo-hoo base or your favorite chocolate dessert.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a very dark beer with a nice brown head. It has the standard smooth flavor that goes with the milk stouts and plenty of flavor. I like the light coffee and chocolate flavors. Some other milk stouts seem a little light to me but this one has a nice rich flavor and a healthy 6.1% ABV.

NEW BELGIUM CRYO RANGER IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

This pours a hazy yellow/orange. It has notes of pineapple and mango on the nose. On the palate, it is well-balanced with the tropical flavors continuing. The cryo hops in this beer help infuse it with the aromatic flavors of the hops without adding bitterness. Big on flavor, low on bitterness, clean finish.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head rests on this IPA and never totally evaporates. Pine and citrus notes from the hops dominate the scent profile. The hop flavors seem muted at first while drinking the beer, but

stay in the very long finish. Hopheads need to drink this. Pair it with foods like fish tacos with pineapple salsa, Indian curry dishes with mango or pad thai with peanut sauce and a squeeze of fresh lime.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.25

This is an amber-colored beer with a slight haze to it. The flavor is a little on the lighter side but that's not a bad thing. Surprisingly, the ABV is 7.8% - yet this beer is very easy to drink, perfect if you're in the mood for a good IPA. Once again, New Belgium puts out a solid beer.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

WITH LANE SIESKY / SIESKY LAW FIRM, PC

Focusing on personal injury, civil litigation, whistleblower claims and workers' compensation law, Siesky Law Firm strives to provide excellent legal services while remaining client and community centered. The Evansville-based trio of top attorneys - including Lane Siesky, Daniel Gearhart and Douglas Briody - boasts years of invaluable experience inside and outside the courtroom. Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.

Q:As a personal injury attorney, what are some of the factors that determine if you'll take on a client's case? Has your decision-making process changed at all through the years?

A:

1.

2. 3.

4.

From a big picture perspective, there are four (4) factors we look at in evaluating cases:

Liability (can we prove who caused the harm); Damages (what injuries and damages were caused); Ability to Pay (are the responsible person and/or companies able to pay for the injuries and damages); and Aggravating Circumstances (drunk driving, disregard of safety considerations, abuse of a child or the elderly, etc.).

If a person injured in an accident has the first three factors in his/her favor (clear liability, significant injuries and damages and the at-fault parties have the insurance

coverage and ability to pay), then it is a good case. If, however, the injured person’s case has the first three factors plus the fourth factor (aggravating circumstances) then it can be a great case and command more money in a settlement or verdict. In addition to looking at cases from a big picture perspective, we also evaluate cases on very specific factors depending upon the type of injury case. For instance, if it is a motor vehicle accident, we have a list of factors that are specific to a car accident that we consider in deciding whether or not to take a case and in counseling the injured party as to the merits and evaluation of the case. Likewise, we have specific factors for nursing home cases, child abuse, sexual assault, premise liability, product liability, medical malpractice and so on.

Finally, we look at the injured person and evaluate the person. In other words, what does this person do for a living, is he or she a nice person, is the injured person likeable and so forth. The injured person is so important because the type of person the injured party is means a lot when attempting to determine how the injured party will be received by a jury of peers. This is true regardless of the case factors. Over time, we believe that we have gotten better at evaluating cases and injured persons because of the number of cases we have handled and seeing those cases “play out” in depositions, mediations and at trial.
