A quick note from the editor
T
he Blue Angels are back! Five more exciting words have rarely been spoken in the tri-state. Yes, it’s festival time again, and the sky’s the limit for ShrinersFest with the return of breathtaking airplane acrobatics and a jam-packed schedule of events and activities at the downtown Evansville riverfront. In Owensboro, ROMP is back with another incredible lineup of bluegrass bands and artists (see The Lone Bellow interview on pg. 12), and the

W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival in Henderson celebrates 25 amazing years. But that’s just scratching the surface in June. Boston bad boys Aerosmith bring their Blue Army Tour to the Ford Center (see interview on pg. 6) and KC’s Time Out Lounge hosts the 2nd Annual Sudz on Green River weekend of rock. Blue army
Tour 2015
Few bands have rocked as long and as hard as Aerosmith, but Steven Tyler and company have no plans for retirement. With all the members in good health and good spirits, the band is gearing up for a big summer, eager to hit the road again and remind everyone what rock and roll is all about. The much-anticipated Blue Army Tour includes a stop at the Ford Center on June 24th – a guaranteed sell-out. Bassist Tom Hamilton kindly spoke with News4U about what to expect from the upcoming shows and much more. The band had huge success in the early days making concise albums with minimal fuss and then even bigger success later on making long albums with tons of production and outside songwriters. What’s your take on the two sides of Aerosmith’s recording career? That’s an interesting question. We just put out an album a few years ago, and I think we overloaded it. It had been 10 years since the last time we made a record and everybody had stuff that they wanted to say musically. So instead of a nice, tight group of songs, we ended up with 16 on it. But we got that out of our system and now

I would really like to go back to the other model for the next one. When you’re in the studio now, it’s so easy to come in with an idea for a riff and immediately start recording it. I’d like to take a group of songs and really make them as good as possible and as finished as possible and then go in the studio and record them. Speaking of Music from Another Dimension!, why do you think a great song like “Legendary Child” didn’t blow up in the way that your past singles have? We have the same question in our minds. It is frustrating, but maybe it had to do with what I said before about loading down the album with so many songs that “Legendary Child” didn’t have enough space to grab everyone’s attention. The problem is there’s just such a huge variety now of ways to tickle your pleasure – games, the internet, etc. Everything is an arm’s reach away. We don’t know any magical formula that can overcome that or negate that fact. The only thing that we can do is follow songs to their absolute maximum and keep them simple; just make them three and a half minutes – but the best damn three and half minutes. Aerosmith famously collaborated with Run DMC back in the day. Is there a contemporary artist or band that you would like to work with? There probably is, but I don’t know who that would be. With the Run DMC thing, that was

just something that popped up. We had just recorded the Permanent Vacation album, and we were at the very beginning of the tour to support it. We got this call from New York that this band of African American guys was going to cover our song on their album and wanted to know if anybody in Aerosmith would play on it. Steven and Joe went up there to their studio and fooled around with the track and then that video happened. Nobody had any idea of the impact it would make. It was such an amazing, natural thing. Here we are years later, still talking about it. Obviously, there are songs the band must play on the Blue Army Tour so people don’t riot, but are you looking to shake things up otherwise? It’s exactly the way you described it. There are certain songs that we have to play or people will leave saying ‘why the hell didn’t they play that?!’ But we always make sure there are slots in the set where we can rotate different songs in and out. In the last few years we’ve been doing that more than usual. It’s a blast to take a really deep cut and put it in the set; take a song like “Walkin’ the Dog” from the first album or “Big Ten Inch Record” from the third album. We’re fortunate in that we can make up a set where every song is a huge song – we don’t have to use any hamburger helper (laughs). - TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com.

KC’s 2ND ANNUAL SUDZ ON GREEN RIVER Evansville’s biggest weekend of rock is back - live, loud and fully amped June 12 & 13.

or the second year running, KC’s Time Out Lounge will stage a two-day concert blowout featuring four of the most entertaining, kick-ass bands around: Hairbangers Ball, Pfreak Show, Your Girlfriend and Saturday night headliner, Velcro Pygmies (see their full story on pg. 75). This indoor/outdoor festival was a huge hit last year, proving that the tristate likes its music live, loud and fully amped – the way it’s meant to be experienced. Suds on Green River will bring you the very best in arena rock, classic rock, hard rock, hair metal, rap and even a little country and R&B if the mood is right. Anything’s possible when you’ve got the region’s premier party bands and a huge crowd ready to light it up!

Ferdinand’s 175th Celebration
One of Indiana’s smallest towns is throwing a HUGE party June 18-21.
T
hough nowhere near as big as Evansville, Ferdinand – just an hour northeast – shares an equally rich German heritage and has been around nearly as long – 175 years, in fact. 2015 marks a major milestone in the town’s storied history, and they are celebrating in style with a free four-day event open to all ages. Each day is packed with food, fun and entertainment, but Saturday is definitely the highlight with a series of concerts by some of the most popular bands of the last 50 years, including The Lovin’ Spoonful, Pure Prairie League and the Georgia Satellites. Between them, these acts have scored countless top 40 hits – classic songs that have stood the test of time. One of the most beloved folk rock bands from the 60s, The Lovin’ Spoonful are best known for the enduring anthem “Summer in the City” and a run of radio hits including “Do You Believe in Magic?,” “Daydream,” “You Didn’t Have to be so Nice,” “Nashville Cats, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind” and “Rain on the Roof.” In addition, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Country rockers Pure Prairie League first arrived in 1970 and released their biggest song, “Aimie,” just a few years later. Subsequent hits followed, including “Let Me Love You Tonight” and “Falling in and Out of Love.” To this day, the band is still in high demand on the touring circuit and plays upwards of 100 shows each year. And, of course, everyone recognizes the opening lines to “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” The Georgia Satellites took that iconic song all the way to number two back in the 80s. The band’s wild mix of influences, including Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones and AC/DC, took America by storm, and they still know how to work up a crowd all these years later. Everyone’s favorite bluegrass music festival returns to Owensboro June 24-27.
H
osted by the International Bluegrass Music Museum, ROMP continues to grow in stature every year, attracting some of the biggest names in the genre. But it’s not just the performances that bring people together from all over the Midwest and beyond. ROMP is a complete experience: music, arts and crafts, children’s activities, IBMM exhibits, films and most importantly, the beautiful setting of Yellow Creek Park where camping is ideal and the wonder of nature awaits. This year’s fantastic lineup of artists and bands includes headliner John Prine and Punch Brothers plus The Lone Bellow, a rapidly up and coming trio from New York with impeccable harmonies and a gift for storytelling. Lead singer Zach Williams kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the festival. Following the band’s performance on CBS Sunday Morning a while back, your profile was raised dramatically, and now you’re right in the thick of it. How are the three of you handling it? They [CBS] really took time to tell our back story, and I think that we’re just so full of gratitude. I moved to New York 10 years ago and started playing the bars and open mics. I’m really thankful for the journey and for the really hard times and on through the really good times. And now there’s this encouragement that comes from people that listen to the music. I think my favorite part of it is when folks tell me what the song means to them, and I’m like ‘well, that’s

not what the song’s about’ (laughs), but I’m so happy, because the song is no longer ours – it’s a really neat transaction to be a part of.
So, your feet are still on the ground? I hope so. My mother and wife would let me know if they weren’t. We had the great opportunity of quitting our day jobs, so to speak, in 2013, and we’ve been in a van ever since playing everything from the beautiful halls – like Carnegie Hall and Red Rocks – to motorcycle clubs in Kansas City. It’s been the full gamut of the American touring experience. It’s been a lot of fun, and I love making something with my best friends. Working with friends comes with its hardships, but I love it. Many performers try to force emotion or overemote, but you guys seem so genuine with your feelings, and I think that’s why your songs resonate. I would say that at our fundamental core of why we leave town and go and play shows is because

we believe in the lyrics of our songs, and we’re storytelling. We’re trying our best to part of that American tradition and saying something that you mean – especially if you have to sing the same songs night after night. You’re going to get bored. But the songs are also connected to our personal lives and every time it’s like this tunnel that shoots you back to where you were when you first wrote it – every single time you sing it. The chemistry that the three of you share is unmistakable. Could you imagine returning to your solo roots now that you’ve had such success together? Man, I love singing with Brian and Kanene – loved it since the first moment that we did it. But music is music, and there are different seasons of life – different things that happen. So, if someone wanted to come off the road for a couple of years and raise a kid or something, I’d be down with trying to do a solo thing. I mean, you look at someone like Jim James from My Morning Jacket – I think that he does that so well where he has this tight knit band, but he’ll also get with his old buddies and do Monsters of Folk or his solo thing or folk thing as Yim Yames or all of these guest spots singing on random projects. I know that Brian loves that, too. Creating is just a lot of fun no matter what, but I am well aware that what we have – mostly in the way that we trust one another and try our best to care for one another – is a really special thing. And I think that that’s what allows us to harmonize night after night and mean it.

Do you have a clear idea of what you’ll do for the set or are you still in the planning stages? We just got off tour the day before yesterday – we were on a one month run. We haven’t had time to think about it just yet, but we’ll figure it out. That’s the great thing about festivals – it’s a free-for-all. What I love is that you can meet another musician backstage and be like ‘hey, do you want to jump up and do something with us?’ That’s my favorite thing. ShrinersFest 2015 The return of the Blue Angels headlines another incredible line-up of entertainment at Evansville’s premier festival on the riverfront June 24-28.

here’s so much going on at this year’s ShrinersFest that it’s almost overwhelming. Organizers have packed the fiveday downtown festival with a seemingly endless array of familyfriendly activities, including arts & crafts, carnival rides, dog shows, inflatables and movies plus plenty of food booths to keep everyone full and happy . For the adults, each night of the festival features the Main Street Beer Garden or Hadi Bierstube, so there’s no reason to go home thirsty. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival turns 25 this year, and organizers are marking this major milestone with an incredible lineup of local, regional and national acts, including the Devon Allman Band, Doyle Bramhall II, Victor Wainwright and headliner Robert Randolph & The Family Band. The week-long celebration of the blues gets rolling on Saturday, June 13 with a concert in Central Park featuring Street Strut Parade, Lindsey Williams, BLUES 4 U, Hog Maw Blues Band and Boscoe France Band. Still one of the largest free festivals in the nation, W.C. Handy kicks off every year with the Taste of Henderson Barbecue, a highlight of the packed schedule. Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra 2015-2016
The EPO will bring out the stars all season long at the Victory Theatre.
T
he incredible 2014-15 EPO season came to a close in May with one of the most exciting performances in the Orchestra’s long, storied history. Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean featured the orchestra providing the soundtrack to one of the most popular films of the last 20 years, driving the action on screen as a packed Victory Theatre filled with movie-goers of all ages looked on in wonder. It was the perfect end to a season that touched on everything from Beethoven to the Stones and set the stage for another muchanticipated series of performances beginning with Indiana’s own Joshua Bell, one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. This supremely gifted Hoosier will delight the opening night crowd in September with Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor and help to commemorate USI’s 50th anniversary. The EPO’s second Classics concert will be the comic operatic masterpiece, “The Barber of Seville” (Asheville Lyric Opera production),

fully staged and sung in Italian with English subtitles. Other Classics concerts will include star-studded performances by 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano silver medalist Antonio Pompa-Baldi (Respighi’s Piano Concert in A Minor), Ana Vidovic (CastelnuovoTedesco’s Guitar Concerto No. 1 in D Major) and an encore by Kendra Colton (Strauss’ Four Last Songs). Plus, the Orchestra will perform James Beckel’s Concerto for Brass & Orchestra and Brahms Symphony No. 2 among other cherished pieces. For the Pops fans out there, the EPO will pay tribute to the “King of Rock ‘n Roll,” Elvis Presley, with “The Songs of Elvis” featuring the vocals of Emmy-nominated songwriter, entertainer and actor Terry Mike Jeffrey. In addition, the beloved annual Peppermint Pops concert in December will highlight country music recording artist and Broadway star, Rachel Potter, riding high on the release of her new EP, “Live the Dream.” Of course, Valentine’s Day is never quite the same

without an EPO performance to set the mood. In February, look forward to performances by two Broadway veterans, Joan Hess and Kirby Ward, “Dancing and Romancing” their way to your heart. The concert combines a four-piece pop group featuring Joe Boucher on piano and vocals. I’m a proud resident of Evansville’s Haynie’s Corner Arts District, and you can usually find me somewhere in the neighborhood - usually relaxing at home with my partner Andrew Carroll, walking our dog Onyx, or working. Bokeh Lounge is a huge part of Haynie’s Corner, and I’m proud to be one of the faces you’re likely to run into while there. You’ll find me behind the bar slinging drinks a few nights a week. You may also find me downtown behind the bar at the Victory Theatre or the suites level of the Ford Center. Working in venues with live music and great parties is a dream come true, and I’ve had the pleasure of making so many friends and meeting so many talented local musicians. We have tons of talented artists here, and I hope you are taking advantage of checking them out! Seeing Haynie’s Corner thrive makes my heart happy. The Nameless Pizza
Way up north on Green River Road near the Highway 57 intersection sits a cozy pizza place where everybody knows your name. Walking into Rounders Too Pizza really is like walking into the fictitious bar on the iconic TV show Cheers; owners Stacia Miller and Joe Sells greet just about every customer by name and in many cases have their food and drink order committed to memory; they sometimes even have orders waiting for loyal customers at a preferred table. Sure enough, I saw this play out time and again when I visited with Miller and Sells one recent afternoon. Like clockwork, workers from around the area – UPS drivers, contractors, etc. – showed up as if on cue to either pick-up their daily R-Too sandwich for a late lunch or to hang out after clocking out and enjoy some of the coldest and cheapest beer in town. It was just a normal day for these two dedicated business owners who spend seemingly every waking minute at the restaurant (they occasionally sleep there on nights when they deliver late to Shoe Carnival), always trying out new ideas and searching for ways to improve. Miller has been a part of the Rounders family for 16 years but fiancé Sells just came on board in January. His involvement prompted the two to purchase the restaurant and immediately start tweaking the menu, striving to use only the best produce and the finest meats to make every signature pizza, sandwich and salad just that much better. They love to experiment with new combinations of toppings and try different crusts, coming up with new creations on a whim. They’re also more

than willing to listen to customer suggestions and keep up with trends like the gluten-free movement. Still, R-Too has built its reputation on classics like their undeniably delicious Nameless Pizza, prepared upside down with the sauce on top and a mound of cheese, meat and some fresh veggies below, plus Creole spices that absolutely pop and truly awaken your taste buds. But perhaps the best thing about this customer favorite is the story behind its “name”. As the legend goes, a former employee from way back who, uh, smoked a lot, created it – but when asked what it was called, unsurprisingly could not remember. Hence, the Nameless Pizza was born. You can’t make this stuff up. With Sells in the kitchen tirelessly perfecting recipes and Miller out front winning over new customers every day, business is good; so good, in fact, that renovations are in the works, including a major expansion of the restaurant to accommodate their growing fan base. And they will soon introduce Bar-B-Q to the menu as Sells excels in the smoking process. He’s a connoisseur of meats and has no taste for vegetables even though he uses them daily to make amazing pizzas. Go Figure. With both indoor and outdoor seating and big screen TVs, R-Too is perfect for family gatherings or private parties. But this place serves up a lot more than tasty brews for the 21 and up crowd. Beef’s also offers an extensive menu, with American staples and choices for larger groups, ensuring something delectable for any appetite. Plus, with wall-to-wall big screens for all the big sporting events, the restaurant has a spacious, open feel that is perfect for the whole family. But don’t worry if you don’t feel like getting off the couch; Beef’s also offers delivery in the Newburgh area. As a Beef’s newbie, I was first greeted with the Amarillo Firecracker Burger, a personal favorite of owner John Greenwell. An ample Angus beef patty with bacon (sold), gooey pepperjack cheese, crispy fried jalapenos and their very own sweet jalapeno mayo, it’s a juicy meal in itself with a zesty kick. Not into spice? Get creative and build your own burger instead. A pub necessity, Beef’s Award-Winning Jumbo Wings were up next. With 12 sauce options, ranging from garlic parmesan to nuclear

(wowza!), I stayed somewhere in the middle with Sweet Jalapeno, a match made in heaven. With the likely chance that you’ll fall in love with one of their sauces, they sell bottles to take home. If you’re not feeling saucy, try one of their dry rubs - either Chef Paul’s Blackened Seasoning or lemon pepper. As a huge fan of nachos, I was stoked to see their Whole Lotta Steak Nachos as my final dish. Work out before you go enjoy these bad boys - you’ll need both hands to lift that basket. Piled high with a half-pound of Angus skirt steak and two kinds of cheeses, the tortilla chips are crispy vehicles for fresh lettuce and tomato with sour cream, Beef’s signature salsa, and of course, jalapenos. On my next trip, I think I’ll have dessert first, because the Molten Chocolate Cake looks unreasonably good and sounds like a great foundation for some Mango Habanero wings and Blue Moon on the patio. Best for meat lovers If you live in Owensboro, then Maloney’s is most likely already on your radar and a place that you and your family frequent. But for those still in the dark, this is a great, kidfriendly restaurant that serves up a lot more than just western Kentucky’s tastiest pizzas. They’re also known for some pretty incredible wings and delicious dipping sauces, hand-rolled calzones and signature salads not to mention steak and seafood entrees. Sure, you can use their pick-up window for convenience, but keep in mind that Maloney’s has 30(!) big screen TVs inside plus arcade games for the whole family; or you can hang out at their open air bar with patio seating. But whether you dine in or carry out, don’t pass up the chance to try Maloney’s famous Mountain of Meat pizza, stacked ridiculously high with beef, pepperoni, sausage, bacon and ham. Vegetarians beware; this creation more than lives up to its name. From top to bottom, it’s a meat-lover’s dream, a virtual double-decker with perfectly seasoned marinara sauce and layers of mozzarella and parmesan cheese. If you’re serious about your pizza, Maloney’s is more than worth a trip across the border.

June Craft Beer of the Month: Delirium Tremens
Delirium Tremens is a golden Belgian pale ale brewed by Huyghe Brewery. The brewery was founded in 1906 by Leon Huyghe in the city of Melle in East Flanders, Belgium. Its “flagship” beer is Delirium Tremens. Rated as the best beer at the 1998 World Beer Championships, it has since stayed near the top ever since. With a fine and regular effervescence, Delirium Tremens delivers a stable head, slightly malty, with a nice touch of alcohol and spice. It’s brewed with three different strains of active yeast that are visibly floating in the beer as you enjoy it. The aroma features a very heavy banana scent augmented by sour lemon and light cloves. It tastes like a sweet, spiced pastry similar to a lemon cake baked with a hit of rum. Its combination of high alcohol (8.5% ABV) and great flavor makes it a very solid option whether you’re looking to enjoy the evening or make it through the morning. Delirium Tremens is the beer that true craft beer lovers will seek out, so come and try this exceptional brew and make sure you tell your friends about it. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is currently the only craft beer bar in the area to have Delirium Tremens on tap. But once the word gets out it may not take long to find it in your finer craft beer locations. Bowling for Rhinos
Local fundraiser benefits the fight to save the world’s rhino population Just about any resident of the tri-state knows what a rhinoceros is and has probably seen at least one in a zoo enclosure. However, what residents may not know is that rhinos are having trouble in the wild. The World Wildlife Fund has said that several species of rhinos are critically endangered, and subspecies like the northern white rhino have gone completely extinct. In an effort to raise money for the conservation of these wild rhinos, the Mesker Park Zoo American Association of Zookeepers (MPZAAZK) plans to host an event called Bowling for Rhinos. Bowling for Rhinos, which is hosted by various chapters of the American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) across the US, Canada, and Australia, will include both bowling and a silent auction to help raise money for the endangered animals. This money goes to a variety of sanctuaries in Kenya, Indonesia, and Sumatra that are dedicated to preserving animal and plant life. Last year was Evansville’s first Bowling for Rhinos event, and the money it raised helped AAZK to surpass their annual nationwide goal of $500,000. MPZAAZK needs individuals and businesses of all sizes to come to Bowling for Rhinos and provide support, financial or otherwise. The businesses in question will receive publicity and attention for participating in this environmentally friendly event. Bee Bop’s
122A West 2nd St., Owensboro • 270-663-0623 Samantha Ellison, the hard-working owner of Bee Bop’s, is no stranger to the restaurant business. After managing other establishments for a number of years, she finally decided to call one her own back in 2010. Since then, Bee Bop’s has been a downtown Owensboro staple, catering to the business crowd, shoppers and those strolling down to enjoy the beautiful riverfront. Just walking up to the diner, it’s easy to see why - a retro sign adorning outdoor seating leads into a 50’s style soda fountain, mid-century seating and a lot of smiling faces. Energy is high, the drinks are cold and the dishes are fresh. In line with diner fashion, the first item I tried was The Hopper, a Bee Bop’s original. This made-to-order Angus beef patty was grilled to perfection and topped with a sunny-side up egg. With the deliciously rich yolk, no condiments were necessary on this creation, and the most stand-out ingredient was the steamed bun dusted with cornmeal. Served with a side of golden French fries, the meal would have been plenty satisfying, but I didn’t stop there. Bee Bop’s Reuben is listed in the “Favorites” section of their menu for
a reason. There’s much speculation about where this staple sandwich originated, but the quest to create a classic is quite a task. In my opinion, this one is up there with the best. Sliced fresh in-house, the corned beef is tangy and paired perfectly with melted Swiss, crunchy sauerkraut, 1000 Island dressing and grilled marble rye. Finally, with an already-happy belly, I gave their monstrous Big Bopper Cheese Steak a try and was not disappointed. The seasoning alone was singular, and the tender, thin-sliced roast beef with mushrooms, grilled onions, and green peppers burst out of a chewy sub roll. Add crispy onion rings, and it’s a date. A great restaurant is much more than just great food; it’s also about the experience. With menu items named The Studebaker and The Fonz, Bee Bop’s is sure to be a tasty time-machine adventure. Independent Filmmaker When asked to write this piece about Owensboro, I wasn’t entirely sure where to begin. Then it hit me! While some may disagree, my hometown has become incredibly progressive over the last seven years. The local arts and music scene has grown tremendously. At one time, Theatre Workshop of Owensboro cornered the market with community theatre, but now there are myriad options for local actors such as The Merely Players and Back Alley Musicals. All are fantastic options for those looking to get their feet wet in a town that once had very little to offer in the way of arts entertainment. We now have the expanded riverfront which includes The RiverPark Center that features films on the river as well as Broadway plays; the aforementioned theatre groups; The River City Festival of Films; the local indie film series Unscripted at the Daviess County Public Library that allows indie filmmakers to show off their work. Ten years ago I was like all the haters that said, “Owensboro sucks and has nothing to do or offer.” However, things have changed entirely thanks to like-minded and passionate individuals who aren’t afraid to fall on their faces, get back up and try again. The independent film scene has gone from practically non-existent to thriving with local indie companies such as Red Serial Films and (my own) Verite Cinema which recently released the horror anthology Volumes of Blood. Shameless plugs aside, there is a treasure trove of offerings now that Owensboro has begun to open its doors to younger, more diverse and creative mindsets. Now that I think about it, I’m not as young as when I started indie filmmaking, so I guess I need to do something substantial before I wind up like our old riverfront. Nah, I’m still cool… right?

What truly scares me... My kids growing up too fast. Just yesterday they were babies; now my son is in middle school and my daughter is almost in fourth grade. On a not-so-sour note, I would say that roller coasters truly, 100% scare me!!

y s s a l C l e r g n o M mayhem V: a midsummer Knight’s Siege The Shire of Aurea Ripae will be hosting the historical festival of Mayhem V at the Daviess County Lions’ Club Fairgrounds from June 1921. This midsummer-themed event will feature all sorts of activities, including armored and rapier combat, work with archery and thrown weapons, a gambling tourney and more. The Society for Creative Anachronism, or the SCA for short, is behind Aurea Ripae and, therefore, this festival. Its goal is to recreate the world of pre-17th century Europe with tournaments, dancing, feasts and a variety of other activities. However, some things from the past are meant to stay in the past, which is why Mayhem V will have modern restrooms. This may seem strange to an outsider, but Mayhem V is all about history-based fun. The Shire of Aurea Ripae encourages people to join in for the weekend and step into a completely different century. An air-conditioned hall will be open at night for dancing, music, feasts, and all sorts of entertainment, and merchants are welcome to bring their own tables and sell their wares at no extra cost. Saturday will even feature some equestrian activities to add an extra layer of authenticity to the festival. All paid attendees will have free tea, lemonade and ice water to keep them hydrated throughout the day and “knight.” For a small fee, you and your family can come to the fairgrounds and spend some time in another time! - rachel Bambenek The fairgrounds are located at 6151 State Route 54, in Philpot, Ky. entucky chillwave artist Grant Short, aka Classy Mongrel, chose the name of his creative alter-ego to express the “duality of man.” But it also perfectly sums up the dichotomy – and evolution – of his musical approach. “Years ago I used to do a singer-songwriter thing – just me and a guitar – but then I got into groups like Small Black and Toro y Moi,” he explains. “To me it was like a Stevie Wonder thing where they were doing the same thing but with a synthesizer and beat machine.” Short proceeded to bury his head in manuals to learn the ins and outs of the technology and made his presence known on the DJ scene, experimenting with sounds and soundscapes. Slowly, he introduced vocals into the mix; the human element was the key. “I had a really good response to that, and that’s when I launched a publishing company and indie record label and started putting myself out that way,” Short says. Since 2009, the Daviess County High School graduate has released two EPs and two LPs, including Feel Everything, made available on iTunes and Google on 5/12. Its 11 tracks veer from atmospheric electronica to electronic pop, all accented by Short’s heavily-processed vocals that hover just above the synths like a low line of clouds. The overall effect can be positively icy at times which may help to explain why Classy Mongrel goes down a storm in Alaska, of all places, and also resonates with the Europeans. Primarily, though, Short concentrates on college towns in the U.S. “where people tend to be more openminded.” His previous LP, Love & Resistance, is still receiving spins on college radio, and he plans to book a run of shows at universities and art-based venues to both capitalize on the record’s lingering influence and introduce the new material. In the meantime, he’s set to play two dates in North Carolina this month followed by a return engagement at PG Café here in Evansville. In addition to releasing a new album and preparing for a tour, Short continues to work on the licensing and publishing end of the business. He’s dealt with MTV and other entities in an effort to take Classy Mongrel to the next level. So far, it’s paid off. “I call these my Lennon/Yoko years,” Short laughs. “I’m able to write lots of music, do whatever I want and hang out with the kids and kind of have a good time.” But he’s also smart enough to realize that the good times won’t last forever and is savoring the moment, taking stock of just how far he’s come. “When I started out, I didn’t know what I was doing – so I just kind of embraced what everyone told me I was, and it’s worked out.” - Te For more info, visit classymongrelmusic.com and follow Short on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Natalie Stovall & The Drive
Backstage Bar & Grill / June 12 The first thing you notice about Natalie Stovall is her hair – big and blonde with layers of curls. But once she opens her mouth to sing, everything changes. The small town fiddle player from Columbia, TN has a voice that turns even more heads than her look, and it truly shines on “Mason Jar,” Stovall’s latest single recorded with The Drive, her cracking four piece band (drummer James Bavendam, guitarist Miguel Cancino, bassist Zach Morse and guitarist Joel Dormer). Together since 2006, their chemistry is explosive on stage, and it caught the attention of HitShop Records president Skip Bishop one cold Nashville night in 2013, leading to a contract and much-anticipated debut album. Countless shows later (including a tour of the Middle East to support the troops), Stovall and the boys are primed and ready to rock the Backstage Bar & Grill on June 12.
Stovall has been playing professionally since she was 10 but started violin lessons as early as age four. Her musicianship has taken her everywhere from the White House to the Oprah Winfrey Show, just two of the amazing experiences that pad the multi-instrumentalist’s impressive resume. But it’s her singing and ability to craft a great melody that’s really getting everyone’s attention these days. When it comes to 80s BMX bikes, I’m not kidding around; well, maybe a little. An Evansville native and Newburgh transplant, I have turned my childhood mode of transportation into a passion to save the bikes that started a revolution in cycling and underground culture. My garage is filled with over 20 vintage and collectible BMX bikes - classic models like Haro, Dyno, Kuwahara and Hutch. As a proprietor and tech at the family owned and operated Ted Brown’s Quality paint and Body Shop in Newburgh and a husband (to a very tolerant wife) and father of two
(with one more on the way), I’m still at it in my garage most evenings, turning wrenches not only for myself but for the over 25 kids I have rebuilt and restored bikes for - free of charge through my Evansville Kids Bicycle Donation page on Facebook. It’s not all work, though. I still bash around town with my buddies, all of whom are in their 30s and range from business owners to local musicians. nother month has clicked off the racing calendar for the 2015 season. And despite the very wet season we have endured thus far, some area tracks have managed to complete most of their shows. However, tracks like Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City and Kentucky Motor Speedway in Whitesville have had a terrible time getting the season off the ground. The bad weather is just another reason it is getting more and more difficult for local tracks without corporate sponsorship to keep the gates open. So, when you see the promoter of your favorite track, stop them and thank them for their efforts. My buddy Tim Ivan Jerome (also known as Drivin’ Ivan from days gone by) and his girlfriend Amy Coy who I mentioned in last month’s article are preparing to do a FREE presentation this month about the History of Auto and Motorcycle Racing in Evansville & the Tri State. This presentation will take place at 10am, June 27th at Willard Library (21 First Ave) in Evansville. For more information, contact the Special Collections Department at 812-425-4309. Thank you Ivan and Amy for spending your personal time to collect the history of our sport. If you read the April issue, you may recall that I mentioned tracks that would remained closed for this season. I am happy to report that Rockport Raceway located between Reo, IN and Owensboro has reopened for those go kart racers and fans. The track is racing on Saturday nights as usual and things look to be picking up for them. A cool side note to this is that there have been a few famous 2-wheeled racers attending some of the Rockport Raceway events. You never know when you may spot the

Hayden brothers, Nick McFadden or Jake Lewis at the track. Also slated to open for a limited schedule is Chandler Motorsports Parks 1/8th mile drag strip. This is going to be more suited for street car type racing as there are currently no plans for traction compound to be applied for races. It is good to see the track open, but it won’t be a big benefit for our local drag racers just yet. As I wind this month’s issue up, I need to mention a few of our racers from the area who are doing well early on in the season. In the dirt world, two Open Wheel Modified drivers making big things happen early in the season are Owensboro’s Tyler Nicely and Utica’s Josh Harris. Nicely is currently leading the American Modified Series points and is in the top 5 in the UMP National points. He also announced in May that his team has purchased an ARCA car from fellow Owensboro driver Brett Hudson. The car has been in Concord, NC being updated by Ken Schrader Racing, and they have hopes of racing the upcoming events at Indy and Kentucky Speedway. Harris is in his first full season with Evansville, IN based Scott Clippinger Racing and has been having a stellar season so far. He’s currently 3rd in AMS points and 21st in the Nation. Owensboro’s Blake Hillard had an awesome run recently at Salem Speedway in Salem, IN during the kick off to Circle Track Magazine’s Great American Racing Series. The series had 35+ entries and Hillard and fellow Owensboro racer Brett Hudson started p1 and 2 for the feature event. Hillard went on to record a strong 2nd place finish and Hudson made the top 15. And Owensboro’s JD Beach recently racked up his second career win in Super Sport racing. This win came at Virginia International Raceway. Congrats to JD and his team on a great start to a potentially remarkable season. Twice a week, the area’s best ping pong players serve up some fierce competition.
T
he sport of table tennis rarely makes headlines in the U.S., but elsewhere in the world, particularly China, it’s a near obsession. Phenoms such as Ma Long and Zhang Jike are treated like rock stars, celebrated and even worshipped by adoring fans. Meanwhile, on the west side of Evansville, the best players in the tri-state battle it out in relative anonymity every Tuesday and Thursday night under the bright lights of a non-descript pole barn. The history of this seemingly secretive table tennis club goes back to the mid 90s. After losing a prime spot for competition in the basement of the Evansville Heart Group, local pong fanatic Jerry Niemeier took matters into his own hands and erected a building with high ceilings and the space to house multiple tables. Sadly, Niemeier passed away from cancer just a couple of years later, but his wife Loretta has continued to allow use of the facility ever since. The cast of characters includes men and women of all ages and from all walks of life. Meet some of the regulars… Harvey & Tama Niednagel: This ping-pong power couple has been frequenting the club for 13 years. Harvey played quite a bit in the mid 60s but didn’t pick the game back up until after retiring in 1998. He and Tama placed 2nd in the Florida State Seniors Tournament as doubles partners a few years ago.

Justin Cody: An eight year veteran of the TSTTC, JC won the 2014 Ohio Valley Tourney. His unorthodox style (i.e., use of a hardbat paddle - Google it) and defensive brilliance make him very, very difficult to beat. He’s also got some wicked tattoos. Don Welden: Even at the ripe old age of 83, DW still has what it takes to take down all but the top guns at the club despite nursing a bad hip. He is an inspiration for senior citizens everywhere to get out and have fun.
U.S. Masters in Columbus, OH circa 1985 when he nearly defeated a highly ranked player. He lives by the motto, “I LOVE the game – most of the time.” rajiv KC: From Nepal, “Raj” is a master of the slice and a genius at returning overhead slams. His agility and hand/eye coordination are virtually unmatched. Your best bet is to challenge him after he just played tennis for four hours; then you might have a prayer. Paik-Kooi lau: To stand across the net and see Malaysian-born Paik-Kooi staring back at you is quite intimidating. His penhold grip (again, Google it) forehand is devastating, and he delights in exposing your every weakness. Plus, his laugh is priceless. Jimmy Khong: From Vietnam, JK is relatively new to the club, but his talent has blossomed over the last few years. His style is economical with precise movements that are quiet and clinical. He lulls you into a false sense of victory before you suddenly realize that you’re toast.
Stan Pease: With a diabolical lefty serve and severe spins (not to mention ridiculous wingspan), SP is formidable and incredibly crafty. The 59year-old cites his best match ever as a loss at the

Velcro Pygmies
F
ormed in Louisville, Ky nearly 25 years ago, Velcro Pygmies are not your typical band. Their name raises eyebrows, of course, but more than anything, what sets these guys apart is a work ethic rarely seen in 2015. It’s hard to say what’s more impressive – the 200-plus tour dates every year, the endless miles logged on the road or the four hour shows with no breaks. Regardless, it all adds up to a band with serious stamina and a willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed. For the Pygmies, the trick is to be larger than life on stage – rock stars, if you will – but humble and gracious when it’s over, ready to break down the equipment, load up the van and head to the next venue. Now based out of Atlanta, the Pygmies have a long history with Evansville, dating back to the days when Harpole’s was the happening place. And though the band draws spill-over crowds at KC’s Time Out Lounge these days, the initial reaction to their over-thetop production steeped in the rock and (hair) metal excesses of the late 70s and 80s was tepid at best. The tide, however, eventually turned. “I don’t know if the city caught up to us or vice versa,” lead singer and co-founder Cameron Flener explains. “We’ve never changed – always been the same cheese-bag band. We’re too stupid to know any better – we are what we are. So, it’s sincere. When people see us, they think ‘he looks like a (bleeping) idiot, but he’s sincere about it – my god.’” Flener’s self-deprecating sense of humor is a big part of his stage personality, but he also lets loose on the audience, picking out random victims to mock in good fun in between blasts from Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Poison, Ratt, Van Halen – even Prince and Toby Keith. But in truth, the songs take a backseat to
the sheer entertainment value: Big Hair, Big Lights, Big Sound. “People can come to see us five nights in a row and though the music may be similar, the shows will be totally different,” Flener says. “The band is hard to explain because you can’t capture it on videotape – you have to be in the room and watch it all happen.” Though Flener is the obvious focal point of the Pygmies, he’s surrounded by an ace line-up of musicians, including longtime drummer Chris Eddins, bassist Jacob Sanders and new addition Chris West on guitar. From the outside they may appear like a real motley crew of rockers, but the Pygmies are all business when the music starts – the business of fun, that is. “We give away 50 beers, glitter the girls. Everybody is a part of the experience from the fans to the staff,” Flener says. That ‘experience’ is something the current square footage of KC’s can barely contain. Pygmies shows always sell out with people routinely turned away at the door. That’s what makes the Time Out Lounge’s upcoming Sudz on Green River weekend of rock (June 12-13) so heavily anticipated. With the band scheduled to headline Saturday night out in the Washington Square Mall parking lot, the crowd restrictions of the bar will be a non-factor and thousands of fans are expected to witness the Pygmies in all their pseudo-pompous glory. It’s a given that the guys will deliver. After all, as Flener points out with characteristic wit, the band has more than paid its dues. ”What’s the secret to success? Failure. Daniel Knight • 3 I’ve said it before - you can count on Dogfish Head to take on intriguing brewing challenges. This one’s a glutenfree brew made with sorghum rather than barley. The brewing process also includes strawberries and buckwheat honey. It pours up golden and clear with a two finger head that dissipates quickly. It’s kind of fizzy with carbonation bubbles on the side of the glass. The aroma is definitely strawberries and honey. The flavor is very light with a profile that mimics its aroma. I’m not especially crazy about it but have to admire the brewers for crafting a pretty drinkable ale with natural ingredients that’s gluten free.
Daniel Knight • 3.25 This Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer based on a German beer style that traces its history to 16th century Bavaria. Schlafly chooses to use some atypical American ingredients and gets an expected variation in the brew. It pours up a dirty straw color. Since it’s unfiltered it displays a common-to-its-genre cloudiness, and the head is not especially notable. Its nose is mostly grains, but it’s missing the anticipated yeast and banana hints. The flavor is good, again mostly featuring grains with malts and a touch of yeast. The mouthfeel is very light and edges toward watery. It’s very drinkable with a flavor profile that’s light enough to satisfy most any beer lover.
Paul Bragin • 3.5 A thin white head rests atop an amber beer. Sweet scents from sorghum and honey used in brewing the beer fill the nose first, but they give way to the smell of strawberries. The strawberry flavor stays while drinking. This is a gluten-free beer, but since it’s my first, I don’t know what to compare it to in that category. Pair it with sweet foods like dried fruit or mascarpone cheese.
Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick white head forms on this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and never completely disappears. The familiar smell of wheat controls the scent. The light and crisp taste of winter wheat continues on the tongue when drinking the beer with some spice in the finish. This beer is available year round, but will be especially welcomed as a refreshing choice during summer. Pair it with lighter dishes like salads or German foods.
Widmer Brothers Hefe Shandy
Daniel Knight • 3.5 Summer Shandys are an old tradition that involves watering down a beer with lemonade or a lemon lime soft drink. As usual, the beer is a wheat based ale. This one claims to be a Hefeweizen. It’s traditionally cloudy and straw-colored with a fizzy, quickly fading head and a bit of lacing. The smell is like a Hefe with lemonade - a mostly a subtle lemon aroma. The taste is light bodied, slightly tart and effervescent. I pick up a bit of grainy wheat in the flavor as well. At a low 4.2% ABV this seasonal brew would make a great refreshment for most any summertime activity. Paul Bragin • 3.75 A quickly disappearing white head crowns this hazy golden beer. Strong lemon notes dominate the scent profile. The lemon flavor remains with the first sip of the beer and becomes more pronounced during the long finish. This might not be something to actively seek out, but it will definitely serve as a great thirst quencher during the hot summer months and add life to cookouts and sporting events. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a nice wheat beer with just a touch of lemon. It had a slight bitterness to it, but it’s pretty good. I like the fact that they did not go overboard with the lemon flavors as some other beers have lately. This would be a good summer beer, crisp and refreshing.

This is a nice hazy yellow beer with good carbonation. I enjoyed the light wheat flavor; it’s a good beer for the summertime. It did have a light straw aroma but that’s expected in a Hefeweizen. It just had a good balance of wheat flavor and hops - nothing flashy but still a solid beer.

Daniel Knight • 4 This one’s a Maibock style of beer. It pours a dark orangish color and presents a thick, cloudy appearance. The one finger head is an attractive tan color but doesn’t retain well. It laces up the glass as you enjoy it. The aroma is nice, malty, fresh bread, with faint brown sugar and spice notes. The taste matches aroma mostly, with the addition of pineapple and some spices and a little hop kiss on the front end. The combination works well in my opinion. It’s a very nice brew - a delicious hybrid style with bock-like maltiness but ale-like hopping.
Paul Bragin • 4.5 A nice off-white head sits at the top of a deep amber colored beer. Sweet scents of malt are first picked up by the nose. The malt also presents itself as the first flavor on the tongue while sipping the beer, but some hop bitterness comes through in the finish. This is a great choice for anyone who loves craft beer. Pair it with spicy foods as well as pork dishes. Jabez Martinez • 2 I thought I was going to like this beer as it poured a hazy amber color. THE VACUUM ENIGMA
While wandering rather aimlessly around the local Sears store, I found myself in the appliance department. Surrounded by the many shiny new ranges, washers, dryers and refrigerators, I came, unexpectedly, upon a much less attractive gathering of broken and damaged devices huddled ignominiously in a dark and dingy area of the showroom. Amongst the sundry blenders, microwaves and toaster ovens, stood a row of well used and abused vacuums of various brands, colors and designs. There were large ones, small ones, short ones, tall ones, canisters, uprights and a few hybrids which seemed even more disheveled than the others; perhaps an identity crisis? Experiencing a condition somewhere between boredom and curiosity, I began to examine the repair tags on these sad vestiges of mechanized floor cleaning. One said simply, “Motor makes loud noise”; another stated, “Blue sparks shot from unit, tripped circuit breaker.” These were typical brief descriptions of some condition which had laid the previously valiant vacuum low. As I continued reading down the line of wretched wrecks, I came upon one which caused me some considerable angst. An otherwise splendid machine was condemned to wear the two word moniker: “Doesn’t Suck.” At once I found myself utterly perplexed. Did this poor, beleaguered device deserve such an ambiguous description? In common usage, the phrase “Doesn’t Suck” is a good thing. For instance: Hey, dude, like my shirt? Reply: Great dude, totally doesn’t suck! In a similar vein, it occurred to me that it just might work as a new form of rating for Consumer Reports. An example might be: “In our exhaustive examination of the machine in question, we unanimously agreed that it Doesn’t Suck, and therefore highly recommend it.” On the other hand, of course, the phrase could (just could , mind you) mean that the machine fails to pick up the requisite dirt and debris, thereby not fulfilling its prime directive. How utterly mundane! The forlorn appearance of the bright yellow “droid” (think R2D2) belied the schizophrenic schism it must certainly be experiencing. Fearing the prospect of an irreparable rift in the space/ time continuum, I knew I must rewrite the acutely ambiguous, problem description. Wanting to be entirely concise and succinct, I proceeded to write the following addendum to the work order tag: “Despite the preceding statement to the contrary, this vacuum Sucks Big Time.” At that moment, a profound sense of peace and serenity washed over my body. I knew that my actions had adverted a cosmic crisis of horrific proportions, and I was content. I left the now vindicated vacuum to be restored to full function and once again pursue dust bunnies with vigor, pet hair with abandon and dingy dirt with determination. Sometimes maintaining the fragile balance in the universe depends on the smallest of elements. I believe it’s called the “Butterfly Effect,” or in this case, the “Cyclonic vortex dilemma.” In any case (despite what you’ve been told otherwise), sweat the small stuff; the galaxy is counting on you!

Public outcry for equality, jobs, education and justice is merely an echo in the distance when it is not voiced on paper. People sit behind a keyboard with plenty to say, yet stay silent on election day. Indiana’s strict voter laws disenfranchise certain demographics, not unlike laws of the past aimed to keep certain voters away. Here’s what I say to that: we cannot let them hold us down. With recent events in Baltimore, many are struggling with what’s “right” and “wrong” when it comes to social justice, but are those of us who “aren’t affected” fulfilling our basic responsibility to our brothers and sisters? If you do not stand with the oppressed, then you ARE the oppressor. Blacks have only had full access to voting since 1965; women (rarely WOC) since 1920. Although it is an atrocity to exclude people from shaping the system, it’s also difficult to expect those to participate in the same system that has failed them repeatedly. But we must persevere. It is our right and our responsibility to stand up for all human rights and to uplift our community. Every time someone says “my vote doesn’t count” or “it doesn’t affect me,” that poison spreads like wildfire, an attitude that is smiled upon

Bosse Field: 100 years
Evansville Otters to celebrate a century of sport at the historic baseball park In celebration of Bosse Field’s 100th Anniversary, the Evansville Otters are putting on two great shows this summer. The first unique event at the ball park will be a special showing of A League of Their Own. The movie, which was filmed primarily at Bosse Field in 1991 and made its debut in 1992, will be shown on June 5th at 9 p.m. with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the screening are $9 for reserved seating and $6 for general admission seating. Selma (PG-13) Paramount As one of the most-quoted and influential civil rights activists in US history, a major film depicting the struggles and triumphs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is long overdue. Released at a time when social tension is at a high in places like Ferguson and Baltimore, the film opens with a personal look into King’s own doubts and quickly careens into a heart-wrenching and effective example of the necessity of his work. Directed by Ava DuVernay and powered by a gripping cast, with vivid imagery and a raw view into the Civil Rights Movement, Selma is more than deserving of the laundry list of awards it has received. David Oyelowo is inspirational in his role as MLK, supported by an authentic first lady in Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, and the film highlights many who fought on the sidelines, such as Bayard Rustin (Ruben SantiagoHudson) and Annie Cooper (Oprah Winfrey). For those of us who have only read about that era in history books and heard bits from our elders, the film is both a jarring picture of injustice and a catalyst for inspiration with a soundtrack to match. Not only is it a timeline of a movement that continues today, but it is also a lesson in the difference between politics and policy and the effect both have on the basic rights that so many take for granted. The Babadook (Unrated) IFC Strangely enough, most children’s tales are actually terrifying, perhaps meant to keep them in line. When a seemingly troubled six-year-old Samuel (Noah Wiseman) finds a frightening book, Mister Babadook, his behavioral issues become exponentially greater. A widowed young mother who’s already having issues relating to her son, Amelia (Essie Davis, The Matrix Reloaded) becomes increasingly fearful of Samuel when he begins insisting that the Babadook is real. She decides to destroy the book to calm Samuel, only to begin experiencing more unexplainable activity, wondering if, in fact, he may be right, especially when the book reappears, reassembled and with new, disturbing scenes depicting the two of them. As they both fight the idea of the monster, the stronger he seems to become. Reminiscent of 1950’s and 60’s horror with a Polanski feel, the film relies more on actual horror, the tangle of reality versus nightmares, rather than jumpy cuts and gore, with metaphorical situations relating a single mother’s griefstricken love and the anger of a partially orphaned child with the supernatural. It is written and directed by Lauren Kent, based on her critically acclaimed short film, Monster. In a sea of sub-par psychological “horror,” The Babadook is refreshing and somehow comforting. – Whitney Patterson
Play Something You Believe Vol. 1&2 Nashville transplant Jason Lee McKinney still comes back to his old stomping grounds from time to time to share his musical gifts with the tri-state and take new material for a spin. In fact, he’s fresh off a CD release party at Pistons to celebrate his new double album, Play Something You Believe Vol. 1&2. McKinney has to be one of the more prolific regional artists around; every year sees a new collection of songs, but he’s upped the ante by following 2014’s Petty-influenced Chasing Obscurity with twice the rock. Actually, it’s one part electric, one part acoustic – 18 songs in all with no shortage of classic McKinney bite not to mention clever titles: “Breakdowns and Breakthroughs,” “Bend My Strings,” “Barstool Fellowship,” and “Supply and the Man” are prime examples of his wit, and as usual, the lyrics follow suit with stories of personal struggles but also a sense of communal spirit – “You can put your wallet away don’t worry I got this round / There’s a lot of grace and beer to chase all your blues right down / You can celebrate or drown your cares away / This is the best place in this town / Help us sing a sweet sweet song / We’re one for all and all for one.” The different sides and moods of PSYB keep this ambitious project from buckling under its own weight, and McKinney once again delivers the best southern rock around with flashes of heartfelt country.

Andy Jones Beginnings: I wrote my first song when I was sixteen, called “Demons.” I could barely play the guitar, and it was really angsty. I don’t play it much anymore. Twelve or so years of exploration and discovery have followed. About a year ago, I made the decision to pursue music seriously as a career, with the long-term goal of supporting myself financially with music alone, and I consider that in many ways to be my real starting point.
Influences: My all-time favorite songs are “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles and “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. Paul Simon is my songwriting role model in terms of range of expression, creativity and mastery of craft. John Frusciante is my favorite guitar player. John Lennon’s first solo album has probably had a bigger influence on my singing than anything else. Neutral Milk Hotel has left with me with an affinity for accidentals and all-major chord sequences, and a very long phase in which I was obsessed with hip hop (André 3000 being my favorite) has permanently affected my sense of sentence structure and syntax when writing lyrics: I often prefer to work with lengthy, asymmetrical patterns rather than neat rows of words.

Ever the bouquet of genres, Seattle has once again birthed a nearly stand-alone artist in Alex Guy, aka Led to Sea. More amok than St. Vincent and gossamer in comparison to My Brightest Diamond, the violinist/vocalist has a variety of experience under her belt, including circus composition and theatre, both of which are audible in her third solo album. Two years in the making, Humming is both seductive and threatening. As much baroque as it is whimsical, “Facing South” introduces the album with an urgent echo of Guy’s vocals backed by jazzy percussion and an ethereal darkness from her violin. The pop aspect creeps out of the chamber in “Breathe Some,” a bit reminiscent of the Cranberries, but disappears just as quickly. Her composer chops are laid bare on the rest of the album; “Certain Kinds of Lies” beckons with the flick of her wrist, a gypsy tune leading one into uncertain waters. Proficient to say the least, her ability to purvey every possible emotion on the violin is awe-inspiring. “So Long” is more hopeful than haunting, but the silky, mysterious vibe is present throughout. Guy’s chosen moniker is apt- her music is more than bewitching.
Performances / Recording Plans: I perform regularly, both as a solo artist and as accompaniment for Katie Watts, at a variety of venues, including Bokeh Lounge, Deerhead, TJ’s Stockyard Inn and Penny Lane Coffeehouse. I have an album on Bandcamp, which was reviewed in the December issue of News 4U. Over the next year, I intend to record and release two more albums of original material—another solo release as well as a collaboration with pianist/composer Jeffrey Hampton. I’m also excited to be part of a new band Katie is forming. Mostly, though, I just hope to perform, write, live, and connect with other human beings as much as possible. Sol Invictus Reclamation Recordings/ Ipecac Recordings Long, long after Courtney Love, the powerhouse success of “Epic,” and an almost-forgotten rivalry between FNM and RHCP, the boys are back and more moody than ever. Sol Invictus is a ten track album inspired by the group’s quick reunion and world tour a few years ago where they introduced “Matador,” a tune met with positivity from old and new fans alike. Comebacks can be pretty terrifying, however... Vocalist Mike Patton has taken on a bit more depth and snarl since the golden days, but the relatively sedate title track clicks on like a light bulb - oh, right - that dude can sing. “Separation Anxiety” is devilishly catchy, both whispered and belted, and harnesses a Manson/Korn vibe. Throw some horns and keep them up for “Cone of Shame,” possibly the most compositionally-sound song on the album, with lyrics not fit for the faint of heart. “Rise of the Fall” is a bit scattered, even for FNM, but the sort of French ska feel between screaming is interesting, and “Black Friday” feels like it belongs in a desert horror film. The pulsing repetition of “Motherf*cker” is more of a stuck-inyour-head than is-it-over-yet?, which seems to be a common theme of the album. This collection would have gotten lost during the genre’s heyday, but it’s good, no doubt about that.

Scrubbed in comparison to previous releases, California Nights is the newest adventure from the hip California duo, Best Coast. Former child actress Bethany Cosentino and burly mega-talent Bobb Bruno have quickly gained quite the resume since they got together back in 2009. After unexpected success from their first studio release, the pair has been around the world, even touring with the Pixies last year. Lyrically simple but incredibly catchy, the title track is pretty Smiths-y, and encompasses the album’s tone. “Feeling Ok” says in few short words what we’ve all felt - the glimmer of new love in the dark of depression, knowing that it’s probably fleeting but riding the high nonetheless, and “Heaven Sent” is mellowed Bow Wow Wow with better solos, which is not surprising based on the group’s influences, mostly stemming from 60’s and 90’s surf pop. There’s a clarity and confidence to Consentino’s voice that has lacked previously, more complimentary to Bruno’s fuzzy riffs, and there’s more of a sneer than a whine in “Jealousy” (personal favorite) where she asks repeatedly “why don’t you like me/ what’s with the jealousy?” It’s all recycled beachy angst with melodic instrumentals and a lot of lip-pursed head-nodding. But hey, there’s a reason this sound keeps coming back. I’m down.
Snoop Dogg Bush
Doggystyle Records, Inc./i am OTHER One of the most infamous and loved names in hip-hop, Calvin Broadus, Jr., aka Snoop Dogg, is at it again, but of course, he never really stopped. Since collaborating with Dre in ‘92, Snoop has been an unstoppable force, bobbing and weaving through genres while still remaining loyal to his fans and selling double-platinum records. True to form, Bush focuses on his beloved home state, dancing, women, and weed. After a short stint as reggae man Snoop Lion, the Dogg is back. In recent years, however, his music has taken a more mild turn and has steered away from social commentary after Reincarnated. Featuring artists like Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, and Gwen Stefani, the album is full of dance beats and throwbacks - more singing, less rapping. “California Roll” is pure R&B, while “This City” and “R U A Freak,” take us back to The Wash, heavy on the funk and backup vocals. The legendary Charlie Wilson joins in on the soul jam “Peaches N Cream,” with more old-school Snoop rapping and his somehow less-infuriating soft misogyny, and ska princess Stefani doesn’t disappoint on “Run Away.” Produced by Pharrell Williams, the album’s flaws are hard to find, and it’s inarguable that at 43 and a father of three, Snoop is still top Dogg. -Whitney Patterson
On The God That Follows, Evansville’s Sleepyhead delivers a very good collection of thought-provoking hip hop. Though his influences creep up on occasion (Odd Future in “Asphalt,” Kendrick Lamar in “Chandelier”), Sleepyhead stays true to himself. His flow is nearly impeccable, and his lyrics are filled with meaningful poetry. The stand-out track for me is the chill “Chandelier”—perfect for cruising slow through your neighborhood. Blur The Magic Whip Warner Bros. I’m not going to pretend this album is good. When one of the biggest bands of the 90s has a comeback album, nostalgiadriven 2015 will surely squeal with excitement. Unfortunately, Blur doesn’t deliver the album we want. The Magic Whip isn’t bad by any means, but it is bland as all get-out. There is little differentiation from one track to the next, and Damon Albarn sounds bored in a non-endearing, 90’s slacker way. He sounds bored in a middle-aged “I hate my life” way. At twelve songs, the album feels too long. Let’s hope the next Gorillaz album won’t feature such a sad Albarn.
My Morning Jacket The Waterfall ATO Records My Morning Jacket have consistently released quality albums since the late 90s, and The Waterfall is a welcome addition to their catalogue. The band has always been good at transitioning from folk to rock to psychedelia, all within one album; The Waterfall is no different. From start to finish, the album is filled with wonderful songwriting and beautiful words from frontman Jim James. The Waterfall certainly promises to be one of the better rock albums of 2015. - Russell Finn
