Still the King: Kentucky-born country star making tour stop in southern Indiana

Irreverent ventriloquist bringing cast of beloved characters back to Evansville

H

e's considered one of the greatest ventriloquists of all time - and one of the funniest standup comedians, too. For over 30 years, Jeff Dunham has been cracking audiences up with a cast of hilarious characters known far and wide. Celebrities in their own right, they've become comedy icons: Walter, a retired, grumpy old man; Peanut, a hyperactive, purple-skinned "woozle"; JosĂŠ Jalapeno on a Stick; Bubba J, a beer-drinking Redneck; Achmed the Dead Terrorist, the skeletal corpse of an incompetent suicide bomber. Each one possesses a distinctly warped but loveable personality that connects with people of all ages and from all walks of life - and from all over the world. Indeed, Dunham has performed in such disparate countries as Iceland, Israel and the United Arab Emirates, proving that his humor translates in any region of the globe.

H

e'll forever be known for the line-dancing phenomenon "Achy Breaky Heart" - and that mullet, of course - but Billy Ray Cyrus has carved out a long and varied career in both music and television over the last 25 years. Yes, it was 1992 when the country heartthrob first appeared on the scene, shooting straight to number one with Some Gave All, the best-selling debut album of all time by a male solo artist - nine million copies in the U.S. alone. In addition to "Achy Breaky Heart," the record-breaking release featured the top ten hits "Could've Been Me" and "She's Not Cryin' Anymore."

Now Dunham's back with a new show that's, well, "Perfectly Unbalanced" an apt description of his irreverently funny act that has earned him millions of fans, especially here in the tri-state. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

Dunham got his big break on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in 1990 and subsequently became a sensation on Comedy Central with a run of hugely successful specials that began with the self-financed Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself in 2005 and peaked with Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special a few years later, a broadcast viewed by nearly seven million people. The Dallas, TX native has also appeared in numerous films, including Delta Farce and the recent Smurfs: The Lost Village. Most impressively, he's listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for "most tickets sold for a stand-up comedy tour" as a result of the staggering popularity of his Spark of Insanity tour which visited nearly 400 venues from 2007-2010.

Cyrus followed up the staggering success of Some Gave All with 1993's It Won't Be the Last, another chart-topper that produced several big singles, including "In the Heart of a Woman" and "Somebody New." More albums followed throughout the 90's and 2000's - his music always remained a priority; however, Cyrus also began establishing himself as an actor with roles on Pax TV's Doc and Disney Channel's Hannah Montana, working alongside his daughter Miley. Currently, he stars as Vernon Brownmule on the CMT series Still the King. Thin Line, released in 2016 on Cyrus' own record label, Blue Cadillac Music, featured the song "Hey Elvis" (with a vocal assist from Canadian rocker Bryan Adams) - a tie-in to his role on Still the King. In many ways, the title of both the show and the song apply to the Kentucky-born star's career. Despite the fickle nature of the entertainment industry, Cyrus is still right there, 25 years after making history on the charts. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

very summer, storied social club Germania Maennerchor pulls out all the stops to make sure we don’t forget where we came from. Volksfest began way back in 1961 as a fun way to remember our German roots and has since become a beloved annual gathering for thousands of people who enjoy both the party atmosphere and sense of tradition. But it takes a lot of work to put together such a grand celebration. Countless hours of labor are required, and it’s all done on a volunteer basis by locals who keep the festival running smooth - not to mention affordable. Indeed, Volksfest features some of the cheapest food and drink prices around, and the sheer quantity of beer and German dishes on offer is quite staggering. It’s no wonder that it takes so many volunteers to make it all happen. Of course, there’s a lot more to Volksfest than just delicious food and drinks. The 56th edition will feature three incredible bands to get you in the polka mood - Rhein Valley Brass, Ratskeller Band and Cincinnati Schnapps Band - and the annual bratwurst toss is guaranteed to be highly competitive. And speaking of brats, don't miss out on the 2nd annual Brat Trot 5K on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Volksfest also caters to the kids on Saturday morning with special entertainment for children at 11 a.m. This is a familyfriendly event during the day, so bring the whole crew and don’t miss out on all the great food, drinks, entertainment and many contests. And keep in mind that non-alcoholic beer is free for all designated drivers. It all gets started with a special Germania opening ceremony on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Germania Maennerchor is located at 916 N. Fulton Ave. For more info, call 812-422-1915. No admission charge until 4 p.m.

Along with Mississippi rockers Saving Abel, this year's lineup of artists/bands includes No Deceit, Big Engine, County Wide, Thunderstruck, Jericho Woods, Dan Lawson, Whiskey Dixie, Earthquakers, Stolen Rhodes and more. But that’s just one part of the entertainment equation. The Kentucky Bike Rally also features a Tattoo Contest, Indoor Bike Games, Poker Runs (all money raised on the Poker Runs will be contributed to the Happy Feet foundation dedicated to providing over 3,000 disadvantaged children with shoes), Dirt Drag Races, performances from the world famous Cherry Bombs and much more. And of course, it wouldn’t be a bike rally without a parade of customized and detailed motorcycles from all over the tri-state with trophies up for grabs and bragging rights on the line. Every year, the bikes are the real stars of the show as owners proudly display all of the hard work that goes into maintaining a first class motorcycle. Another popular aspect of the Kentucky Bike Rally is the number of vendors in attendance every year selling everything bike-related, including parts and services. It’s a one-stop shop experience for bike lovers and a great opportunity to network and make new friends in the business. You must be 21+ to attend. The Union County Fairgrounds are located at 125 Pryor Blvd. in Sturgis, KY. For tickets and more info or to register as a vendor, visit kentuckybikerally.com.

NEWS4U JULY 2017 | BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Moore Music Grand Opening

301 N. Royal Ave. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-479-9595

Long-running Evansville business changing locations, prepping for major expansion

F

or over 40 years, Moore Music has been a main player in the tristate music scene, existing as both a seller of top-of-the-line equipment and a provider of first rate lessons for budding musicians. The longrunning business first opened its doors in 1976 with original owner Pat Moore at the helm. His mission: build a staff with extensive musical experience and knowledge to serve the area's growing number of music enthusiasts.

Though the store's location changed a few times - from Newburgh to downtown Evansville to its current home on Morgan Avenue - its stellar reputation remained intact. Then in 2012, the business changed hands. New owner Brett Mulzer had a vision for expansion, and the perfect opportunity presented itself earlier this year when Opus 1 Music owner Cathy Buxton decided to retire, meaning that not only the store but the entire Buxton Plaza which housed it - including psychology offices and Buxton Motorsports - was available for purchase. It was a deal too good to pass up. In short order, the transaction took place to acquire Opus 1, their music lesson program and the Evansville Music Academy - the whole building, in fact. Or, as Moore Music Director of Online Marketing Amy Watson puts it, "we're in aggressive growth mode."

Nicole Parker

Located on North Royal Avenue on Evansville's east side, Buxton Plaza is the ideal spot for Moore Music to put down roots and settle in for the next 40 years. The sheer size and makeup of the building allows for continued growth in all areas of the business. "On the side where Buxton Motorsports was, we are going to put our

musical venue there which will double its current size," Watson explains. "We'll hold clinics, recitals for the music lesson program and any musical acts that we decide to bring in - and there will definitely be a nice sound system in there." Perhaps the biggest benefit of moving into Buxton Plaza is the ability to capitalize on Moore Music's burgeoning online presence. "This will give us a lot more warehouse capacity so we can continue to serve that area very well," Watson says. "The move also allows us to increase the inventory of our three flagship brands: Mesa Boogie, PRS and Breedlove lines - and of course, all of the other brands that you would associate with a guitar and drum store." Mulzer's vision for the new location includes a storefront with several lifestyle areas featuring "really comfortable seating" - a relaxed, chill atmosphere where somebody can come in, test out instruments and jam with other people. Renovations are currently underway with a soft opening eyed for post-July 4th with the official grand opening likely to follow a few weeks later. Stay tuned to Moore Music's Facebook page for details.

etting on the horses at Ellis Park can work up an appetite, so it's a good thing that Lucky Joe's Bar & Grill has been serving patrons for the last five years. Located inside the Club House, the friendly and efficient team offers deli and comfort foods, ranging from sandwiches to salads, soups to fryer favorites, and delectable desserts. Daily specials are available Wednesday through Sunday, including fried chicken and meatloaf. Ellis Park Chef Marvin Gray provides the house-cut meats for the restaurant, the main event for Lucky Joe's dishes. On my first visit, Food and Beverage Director Jack Williams suggested a few tried-and-true Americana favorites, starting with the Ellis Classic Burger. A thirdpounder, the juicy patty was loaded with ripe red tomato, zesty red onions, tangy pickles, crisp leaf lettuce, and melted cheese. Situated atop a soft, chewy Brioche bun and served with a side of piping-hot seasoned fries, it was a lucky bet for sure. Next, as a "lighter" option, I had the Chef Salad - trust me, they don't skimp on ingredients. Piled high with sweet ham, smoked turkey, hard-boiled eggs,

Last, but certainly not least, I enjoyed a large slice of fluffy, creamy red velvet cake which tasted like it came fresh from the baker's rack. Next trip: an Ellis Reuben, onion rings, and chocolate cake. The Club House is equipped for larger groups and partygoers (a full bar is adjacent to Lucky Joe's) and offers gaming, but it's also a great place to grab lunch or dinner and soak up the atmosphere if you're not the betting type. Take a trip to Ellis Park to enjoy the many events on offer, grab a sandwich, and as they say, "raise the stakes today." - Whitney Patterson Hours: Sun-Wed 11 a.m.-10 p.m./ Thurs- Sat 11 a.m.-12 a.m./ 18 and older/ Smoking

AROUND THE TRACK WITH BILLY EGELER Welcome to the "Hell Tour": Tri-State speedsters take on 29 races in 35 days

H

ere we are, it's July and in the dirt racing world, the "Hell Tour" - aka UMP Summer Nationals - is underway: 29 races in 35 days which kicked off in Brownstown, IN and will snake its way across the Midwest. This series of events for Super Late Models and open wheel modifieds is one of the most difficult tours for the "regional" type racer. A different track every night, parking lot maintenance on your hot rod, sleeping in hotels or toter homes and relentless heat and weather conditions. It's similar to a miniature World of Outlaws Sprint schedule. This deal is definitely not for the faint at heart. If you have the opportunity, stop and show the drivers and teams traveling the circuit your appreciation. A big congratulations to Owensboro's Brett Hudson on his win in June at Anderson Speedway. The Hudson team has tried to tame the Anderson Speedway for the past several seasons and has fallen

short. They recorded a CRA Street Stock win at the Indiana speedway during part of the 4 crown series. Congratulations to Newburgh native Conner Dumanski on a pair of NHRA Junior Dragster wins in June. Conner picked up his very first "Wally" and backed it up his very next race with a win. Conner and his family are representing the tri-state and his sponsors very well all across the region. Evansville's Blayne Ellis was able to pick up the biggest win of his career in June at Owensboro's Windy Hollow Speedway. Ellis bagged a $5,000 Mini Stock feature leading only the last handful of laps. Congratulations to that whole crew on a tremendous effort. As we continue along with race season, I highly encourage you to load up and check out some of our area's finest Motorsports. We are very fortunate to have the following tracks right here in our back yard: Chandler Speedway, Greater

Evansville Dragway, Tri-State Speedway, Rockport Raceway, Kentucky Motor Speedway, Windy Hollow Speedway, Cedar Ridge Speedway & Western KY Speedway. Without the support of race fans, racers and local businesses, these facilities wouldn't be able to continue providing affordable, family entertainment. Give them a "Like" on Facebook or Google the tracks for more information. Don't forget to check out my weekly podcast, Performance Racing Weekly to hear interviews with drivers and promoters from all across the country. Visit us on Facebook or performanceracingweekly.com Until next month, keep it dirty side down! Peace

Ellis Park Celebrates 95 Years And the Future Looks Brighter Than Ever...

Ellis Park is celebrating 95 years of History, Horses and Hospitality and may have a future Lookin at Lee living in their stables this summer, and it’s all thanks to Christy Hamilton. Hamilton is excited to see what the future holds for the two-year-olds she has in her barn at Ellis Park. Considering the assistant trainer’s success during past races, it would only be natural for another top horse to be formed under her sway. With Hamilton overseeing the barn, Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, who last summer had horses stabled at Ellis Park for the

first time in well over a decade, won the meet training title in addition to leading the meet with 10 seconds. Hamilton was undoubtedly kept busy with the barn’s 73 starters, who easily led all trainers for the 30-date season. Under Hamilton’s training, Lookin at Lee emerged as the star. Lee is the Kentucky Derby runner-up who also last summer in his second start won a July 22 maiden race before capturing the $75,000 Ellis Park Juvenile on Aug. 6, which was reinstated after an eight-year hiatus. Although he hasn’t won since, Lee has performed at a high level, finishing second in Churchill

Downs’ Grade 3 Iroquois and Keeneland’s Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and third in Oaklawn Park’s Southwest (G3) and Arkansas Derby (G1). With Hamilton and Lee climbing the ranks, it looks like Ellis Park will be the first choice for those wishing to place their bets on the racing world’s rising stars. - Olivia McClure

eeting Carliegh Carson in person, it's clear that adopting a moniker and a strong desire to entertain through artistic expression can truly strip someone of any shyness or hesitation. As we sat across from one another in the living-room setting of PG Cafe on Franklin Street, Carson was gracious, soft-spoken, and brief with her answers about music and life in general. Having just turned 20, she's already been performing live for seven years. Known by her fans as DJ 3Lectro Angel, she was turned on to electronic music by her mom, Leslie, at a young age. After being introduced to the likes of Tiesto, Daft Punk, and DJ Alligator, her infatuation was cemented, but it was Deadmau5 that inspired Carson to ask her mom for her first set of turntables. They came from Toys-R-Us, but she quickly showed her dedication by literally wearing them out. Surprised by - yet pleased with - her daughter's persistence, Leslie purchased a Numark NS7 and took on a managerial role, a natural move for her as a former club owner and social butterfly. A year later, at 13, when most kids are supposed to be in before nightfall, Carson started playing paid gigs at clubs, donning creepy homemade masks and dancing around like a dark sprite, once performing for over 1000 people at an anime convention in Indianapolis. The masks are inspired by her affinity for horror, video games, and cosplay, but they're not just part of a costume - she also sells commission pieces along with other

art through her online store, Rage & Roar Customs. A jill of many trades, she also enjoys making dance videos, and despite her ongoing success with DJ gigs, she's not sure where her future lies - she's toying with the idea of going to the Cleveland Institute of Art for animation or apprenticing for a tattoo artist. In the meantime, she waits tables to pay the bills between shows, spends time with her family, her boyfriend Phoenix, and her Chihuahua, Yoda. While Carson doesn't sing or produce her own beats, she utilizes her skills to mix her favorite electronic artists, whether it's house, trap, or dubstep. When asked which performer she'd most like to share a stage with, she doesn't drop a big name - instead, she chooses a lesser-known Midwest DJ, Joyride, because that's who she's "really into right now," showcasing her simple aspirations and genuine support of other artists. As far as any plans of recording in the studio, there's not much interest on her part, mostly because of frustration with how previous attempts have turned out, although she doesn't consider herself a perfectionist. Why does she do it? She keeps it simple - "It's fun! And I like watching other people have fun." A few fan videos dot the virtual world, her Instagram account (@the_riddim_angel) is filled with her dance videos and artwork, but to get the full DJ 3Lectro Angel experience,

CHASE RICE KC's Marina Pointe | July 20 | 7 p.m.

Country star ready to ignite the night at the summer's number one live music venue

S

ummer madness continues at KC's Marina Pointe. Part of the St. Jude Country Cares Concert Series, country star Chase Rice will take the stage by the riverfront on July 20 for a wild show that's guaranteed to sell-out. The 31-year-old has opened for some of the biggest names in the business, including Kenny Chesney and Dierks Bentley. His 2014 major label debut on Columbia Records, Ignite the Night, entered at number one on the country charts and included the singles "Ready Set Roll" and "Gonna Wanna Tonight," certified platinum and gold, respectively. But Rice is also known for co-writing Florida Georgia Line's record-breaking "Cruise," the best-selling country digital song of all time in the United States. You can check out his latest offering, "If I'm Bein' Honest," on iTunes and Spotify. Reality TV fans may also be familiar with Rice. In 2010, he appeared on CBS's Survivor: Nicaragua, making it all the way to the finale where he finished as runner up to winner Jud "Fabio" Birza. While Rice did not come away with the million dollar prize, he learned a great deal about himself on the show and put that knowledge to good use as he embarked on a career in country music. Don't miss the biggest concert yet at KC's Marina Pointe!

This is a 21+ over event. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 day of show. $5 of each ticket goes to St. Jude Children's Hospital. To purchase, visit eventbrite.com. KC's Marina Pointe is located at 1801 Waterworks Rd. in Evansville.

BLOOD MOON PICTURES

DEVIL'S KNIGHT: Volumes of BlooD Trilogy of terror: Owensboro film crew preparing to

shoot final installment of blood-drenched franchise

T

wo years ago, an indie horror anthology produced in western Kentucky became a surprise hit, receiving accolades from both high-profile critics and fans of the genre. Volumes of Blood not only lived up to its name, but its unexpected success gave Owensboro filmmakers P.J. Starks, Eric Huskisson and the rest of the Blood Moon Pictures crew the clout to work on a sequel with an increased budget and known actors. Meanwhile, Legless Corpse Films attained the rights to release VOB on Blu-ray/DVD - a deal that drew more attention to the anthology and raised anticipation for the follow-up. On cue, 2016's Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories delivered with better production, better acting and most importantly, more gore. A serious buzz around the film grew, eventually reaching Los Angles. There, the heads of Petri Entertainment (responsible for The Funhouse Massacre starring Robert Englund) offered to distribute it on VOD/Blu-ray/DVD through their new genre arm Dark Cuts and help produce the final installment of the VOB trilogy. With the release of Horror Stories set for late July, preparations for Devil's Knight: Volumes of Blood 3 are ramping up (pre-production begins in October). Once again, Owensboro will provide the setting - this time on Halloween morning. The plot revolves around several people who have been involved in numerous atrocities across the city the night before. One by one, they're hauled into the police department for questioning, and their harrowing tales are depicted in gruesome

flashbacks. The hope, now that Petri's on board, is to secure a name horror director for each sequence of the film and sign a notable genre actor for marketing purposes. Starks kindly spoke with News4U about the partnership with Petri, the VOB universe and more. What made you decide to partner with Petri Entertainment? In talking with Andy Palmer and Warner Davis - the two guys that run Petri Entertainment - it became clear that they understood us; they loved the sequel and really wanted to get their hands on it. Their inclusion is what I think will take the next film to the next level, and it's exciting to be able to get in on the ground floor of the next step of their development. But at the same time, one of the things that we said to them is that we don't want it to be this big union production with a bunch of people showing up who just want to get a paycheck. We want to bring in the crew from the second film - and they are cool with that. They understand that keeping the same people involved will keep VOB on the path of a good film franchise. You've received a great deal of press for the first two films. What coverage has had the most impact? We were recently covered by Blumhouse, which was huge for us because they're the company behind Insidious, Sinister, The Purge and a ton of other big horror franchises. The guy that wrote the article messaged me after it had been out and said that the coverage did really well and got a bunch of shares. He had seen my post about a table top card game based off the VOB universe that we're doing and he was really

P.J. Starks excited about that. He wanted us to let him know when we're going to do a Kickstarter campaign for it [August]. Because he could have Blumhouse cover that since games do really well on that site. I don't know where all of this will lead, but it's great coverage for the project. Considering the success of VOB, will Devil's Knight really be the end? Well, there's a whole meta side to the project, a whole universe of things that can be done some really colorful characters and narratives. When we made the second film, we went into it wondering if we could see separate sequences as an entire feature film. Thankfully, that panned out, because some critics noted that they would like to see a full film of particular sequences. Going into the third film, it's the same thing - all sorts of options. We're planning some spin-offs of the VOB universe but they won't be actual films. Plus, there's talk of a comic book based on the franchise - a lot of exciting possibilities.

"SEARCHING" by John Thurgood

T

he first apartment we had was on the edge of a neighborhood called Lower Cup. It was at the bottom of a big hill, and our backyard—if you could call it that—flooded every time it rained. We moved out a few months into our lease. The next apartment was on the second floor of a complex that boasted a higher quality of living. After a month, we found that luxury was relative and our apartment complex used the term in its loosest sense. As soon as we could, we broke our lease and moved into a house, which we couldn't afford, but by then the real problem had become clear. It was the city. We needed more, and the city we had grown up in wasn't enough. Chicago seemed like the right city for us. It was big, without being too big. We found the perfect apartment in a neighborhood that was up-and-coming, which meant it was being gentrified, which also meant we were part of the problem, and so, we moved again. First to Cincinnati. Then to Nashville. Then we moved out West to San Francisco, where we learned that money was our biggest problem, and in order to solve it we were going to need better jobs. We moved instead. First to Portland. Then to Bend. We moved to Eugene. We moved to so many small towns in Oregon, it seemed like we backpacked through the forest for an entire summer. We didn't know what we were looking for, but we knew we wouldn't find it together. We split up, and I couch surfed through the South. Texas. Louisiana. Alabama. I hitched up through Mississippi and Tennessee. I stayed with my parents for a month. I bought a ticket to Canada. I worked on a farm. I bought a ticket to Mexico. I worked on a farm. I bought a ticket to New Zealand. I washed dishes for two weeks straight. I didn't talk to anyone and I worried that I had made a mistake along the way. My problem was moving. My problem was mobile. It moved quicker than I knew. I wanted to find a home, where I could live forever, but everywhere I looked, I only found somewhere else.

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE

Wonder Woman Wows

I

magine a hidden, magical island where only the fiercest warriors ever born live. Now be honest, did you picture the warriors as men or as women? And if you pictured them as women, is it because you have already seen the actionpacked, superhero masterpiece that is Wonder Woman? The notion that men are naturally physically stronger than women is ingrained into our minds from an early age. But in Wonder Woman, the roles are flipped. Gal Gadot - a total badass who served in the Israeli army for two years - plays Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman. More than once, she saves the smoldering Chris Pine who plays Steve Trevor, her American spy love interest, and protects a French village and basically stops the entire world from tearing itself apart by ending World War I. Ok, sorry to spoil the ending of the movie but odds are you've seen it by now and if you haven’t then you really need to get with the program. In one scene in particular, Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor are making their way through the trenches in order to get to an evil German doctor - who is whipping up a batch of poison gas that could massacre millions - when our superhero stops and demands that they help the soldiers and the captured village nearby. Trevor insists it's impossible and that neither side has made an inch of progress in over a year. But a word like “impossible” doesn’t really register when you’re Wonder Woman. And in one of the most thrilling scenes I have ever seen, she steps straight onto the field where bullets are flying at her, allowing the American soldiers to also intercept the field. This is a movie I cannot wait to take my daughter to see. Hmm… she’s seven months now. Maybe I’ll wait until she’s at least pottytrained. But I say I can’t wait because from start to finish, I felt so empowered watching Wonder Woman kick ass and take names. By the time the credits rolled, I started babbling to my boyfriend about taking karate lessons. The whole message of the movie is being courageous and standing up for what is right, and I just love that there's an incredibly powerful and wonderful woman at the forefront of it. SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

MAVERICK: Maverick is a male black Lab/ American Staffordshire Terrier/Boxer mix! He and his two siblings (Gunner & Mocha) were surrendered together because their family had too many animals. They are all very sweet & silly, but Maverick in particular is described by the staff & volunteers as “absolutely wonderful!” He has lived with plenty of other animals in the past and would likely be fine with anyone. He’s just over a year old, and weighs 52 lbs. Maverick’s adoption fee is $100 and includes his neuter, registered microchip, vaccines, heartworm test, and more. He does not HAVE to go home with any of his siblings, but if you’re looking to adopt two dogs at the same time… get $25 off! TATE: This handsome devil is Tate! He is a male brown tabby cat who is our second-longest feline resident. He was found in Posey County and brought in as a stray here just two days after Christmas. In his early days, Tate was extremely shy. He mostly hid in the tunnel in the Cageless Cat Lounge, never coming out when people were around. VHS staff sent him to foster care for a couple of months so that he could learn to be confident and comfortable around people. And that's exactly what happened. Now, Tate is "one of the boys" in Cat C. He and his buddies are affectionate, outgoing, and greet new visitors near the door! Tate is almost 2 years old. He's neutered, vaccinated, FeLV/FIV-negative, and ready to go home TODAY for only $30.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT Taylor & Peaches

Princeton resident Taylor Willis loves all animals, but she admittedly has a soft spot for cats. In fact, she and her best friend visit the VHS most Thursdays to spend time in the cat room petting the felines up for adoption. And that's where she first laid eyes on nine-year-old Peaches (formerly Charlie). Already the owner of a 2-year-old cat, Willis wasn't necessarily looking to adopt another animal, but she just couldn't resist the adorable senior. Soon the two of them were heading back to Princeton together. At first, Peaches was a little timid, spending most days under the bed, only coming out at night to explore her new home. But eventually she acclimated to her surroundings and now walks around the house at all hours; she even plays with her new furry friend. Still, Peaches prefers to spend her time napping. It's safe to say that she's gotten very comfortable at the Willis household. Another successful adoption!

Cadbury Chocolate: Cadbury is a 1-year-old male chocolate Rex rabbit. He was found as a “stray” outside Ozanam Family Shelter on the north side, and never reclaimed! NEW: Rabbit adoption fees are $40, which includes spay/ neuter surgery and now includes registered microchips! Your bunny can always find its way home if ever lost now! Contact the Vanderburgh Humane Society at (812) 426-2563 Tuesday-Saturday 12-6 for adoption details!

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

Does it pay to be sinful?

I was talking with one of you who reads this column monthly. I was told that the column was enjoyable and informative. I expressed my thanks. I said, “I’m writing next month’s column today. What should I write about?” My friend thought for a moment and then said, “Something on ‘the wages of sin.’” The reference is to a verse in the Letter to the Romans: “…the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) If you take a pretty broad definition of sin as living in a way that is contrary to what God wants for us, it would appear the verse from Romans is completely false. In our day and time, sin seems to be paying a pretty nice salary. We see people who are self-absorbed, instead of caring for others, and they’re making a fortune. We see people who can’t tell truth from falsehood, and we give them untold power. We see people who abuse the poor, ignore injustice, and fail to be responsible for the people who are entrusted to their care, and we reward them with authority over a nation. Sin seems to be paying pretty well these days. But those behaviors are, in truth, leading to death – (hopefully) not physical death, but a death of spirit and a death of hope. So, let us work together to build a community, a nation, and a world where the power of death is destroyed and we can live together as the people God intends for us to be.

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

Stream of Consciousness (Or “1 in the Hand, 2 in the Cloud”)

O

ver the years, there have been many bands whose new albums I met with eager anticipation. I have gone to record stores as soon as they opened to pick up a new release, or - in those later years between the decline of physical copies of albums and the rise of streaming services - made sure to be at my computer ready to click as soon as a download was made available. But I hadn’t geeked out over a favorite band’s new album - let alone just an announcement about one - in years until this week. And I made a decision: I would actually buy a copy of this album. Once upon a time, I resisted digital copies of albums. Even after I traded in my bulky 250-CD binder (hey, I like variety) for an iPod and an FM radio transmitter, I still bought the disc and ripped it into iTunes. Maybe I was just stubborn. But as a smartphone won that rarest of real estate that is pocket space, the siren song of streaming services that allowed me to reduce the number of devices I carried by one lured me away. I used to buy several albums per month; I can now count the number of albums I’ve actually bought in the past 4 years on fewer than the same number of fingers.

(I never could get into vinyl, by the way. I know there are several record collectors out there collectively shaking their heads - many of whom are friends or relatives - but it never interested me. Go figure.) But despite my oft-proclaimed love for Google Play Music (not to mention SoundCloud or the myriad others), I still love buying a copy of a truly great album. Sure, there may be a modicum of nostalgia in there (after all, I spent countless teenage hours scouring the liner notes of my favorite albums, looking at the artwork and reading the lyrics in a hope to get inside their heads), but I also know it supports the band a lot more than just a few streams on Spotify. And as I’m often a captive audience for what gets played on modern pop and country radio, I feel obligated to do everything in my power to keep great bands making great music. Plus, I just want to support something as clever as that Queens of the Stone Age announcement video.

Evansville Needs Its Own Version of CompStat

Grab any glimmer and don't let go

I

D

o you ever feel like you're running in circles, head spinning like a hamster wheel stressing about tasks to be done and worrying about people in your life who depend on you and are experiencing hardship? Yeah, me neither. I have a tendency to overload myself with tasks inside and outside of my home, in my work life, and in my personal life. Some people feed on stress - I am one of those people. Lately, however, I have found myself with my plate so full that it just seemed to keep piling up, and eventually started spilling off of the sides. I had become so overwhelmed that I actually felt paralyzed, unable to give anything to anyone. It became difficult to get out of bed - everyday necessities seemed terrifyingly impossible. I tried to avoid leaving my house - I felt anxious and sad. But mostly, I felt anger - anger at myself for giving in to my bout of depression, infuriated at not being able to just pull up my big-girl pants and be the dependable multi-tasker I've always been. Spiraling from usual stress to a complete breakdown, I had to remove myself from the situation and take a look at myself as an outsider. Who am I? With the listening ear of a few important people in my life, and eventually (the first step is the

hardest) a counselor, I know that I'm still myself, but I've lost touch. No one can fulfill promises, duties, or lend themselves to anyone else if they're not taking care of themselves first. Although it makes sense now, I had difficulty swallowing this concept at first. I am the nurturer, the empath, the fixer. I enjoy over-achievement and get pleasure from doing things for other people - therein lies the hamster wheel. I've come to the realization that I can still do the things I love, but I have to make myself happy first, or else I don't have the energy to do any of it, and I refuse to just give up. It's ok to be your number one. It's not selfish, it's not unkind, and there's nothing wrong with seeking help, taking breathers, and saying no when you're overloaded, mentally, emotionally, or physically. You'll be better for it in the long run, but don't shut yourself off from the world - the light always outweighs the darkness. You just have to grab any glimmer and don't let go. n his book Leadership, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani discusses the method his police department used to reduce the crime rate in the city by 75% while he was in office - an innovative technique called CompStat. Essentially, this system is based on tracking smaller crimes to stop bigger crimes. CompStat effectively pinpoints areas with high criminal activity. It also allows police departments to hold themselves accountable. In NYC, for example, heads of the police departments meet periodically to question the heads of certain precincts if there is a spike in crime for that precinct. The numbers tell the story. Before CompStat, NYC saw 1,946 murders in 1993. In 2015, that number dropped to 352. Of course, Evansville is nowhere near the size of NYC, but the River City certainly has seen a spike in crime this year, particularly on the south side where gang activity has increased. In fact, there are more homicides thus far in 2017 than all of last year. While Evansville is still a great place to live and raise a family, these recent random acts of violence are disturbing. If the city decides to implement its own version of CompStat - which many cities beside NYC have already done - maybe the murders and general crime rates in the city can be reduced. Wonder Woman (PG-13) DC FILMS

There is something novel I’ve seen in every DC Comics cinematic production to date which I have tried to express whenever I discuss these movies. When I reviewed Suicide Squad, I immediately saw that DC wanted their main antagonist to be inner conflict, and not simply the villain on screen. It wasn’t executed very well, but I saw it. They finally pull this off convincingly in Wonder Woman. The film is not just the heroic adventure of a female superhero taking on a villain bent on world dominion. It is a heartfelt tale of a woman who learns the truth behind what it means to love and to fight for the best in people. She ultimately makes for a sophisticated and bold story for our girls.

Wonder Woman is, in several ways, the same model of movie that Marvel's 2011 Captain America attempted to be, but triumphs over it in every aspect from character development and emotion to narrative and action. Not only did DC Comics finally release an amazing movie that lives up to their weighty comic book legacy, but they also did this story far better than Marvel did their World War superhero origins story: A definite must-see. - Laura Engram

ONE RACE FILMS The Fate of the Furious is another guilty pleasure aimed at adrenaline junkies, following the established pattern of the rest of the Fast and Furious franchise. Although I love me some Vin Diesel eye candy just as much as the next woman, the plot is hardly existent and relies on a pretty heavy suspension of reality as our favorite drag racer merc-agents circle the globe, on presumably their last mission. This time, however, one member has gone rogue. It is up to the loyal team to chase down their friend and try to discover why he would so coldly betray them. Saying the stunts and special effects are “unbelievable” isn’t just a figure of speech. Although sincerely well made, it was clear to me you either have to be an unrelenting fan of the franchise or a hardcore stunt enthusiast to stay involved in this movie. That part we all love in every Bond movie as they reveal the sexy car is on steroids in this film. Motorheads will salivate. Personally, I felt the action and visuals were a welcome distraction from how little I cared about the dilemma of these characters. But mmm, Vin Diesel I was worried about. - Laura Engram

HALEY SMALLS Heart of Gold Self-Released Haley Small’s debut EP Heart of Gold goes beyond what you might expect from a breakout R&B album. The production quality is unique and enthusiastic, yet crisp and accentuating to her mesmerizing singing and ranged vocal style. Bumping rhythms ricochet across each track with interesting synth loops hovering melodically along each passing beat. The lyrics of each track are honest and authentic, although a little thematically monotonous, and even somewhat cliché when you consider the genre. The wordplay is plenty intriguing and playful though. The first track that spoke to me was “Scared of Me," a sweet question begging for intimacy and trust. The single immediately following, “All Yours,” is heart wrenching as she softly cries, “Loneliness looks for happiness, happiness isn’t obvious, my only wish was oblivious to you.” Still, Smalls comes back from the melancholy in the dance-worthy songs that follow. “Go Low” delicately twitters with synth along the solid baseline that bounces between sensual and beckoning lyrics. The final track adds a gorgeous ethnic flair with guest vocalist Dice Ailes, finishing the album with an air of elegant resilience and surety. - Laura Engram

PARAMORE After Laughter WEA/Fueled by Ramen My first impression of Paramore’s After Laughter was feeling that sexy, funky, “sell-out” vibe that so colorfully characterized late 90s No Doubt. It sounds so unlike them and their previous efforts it’s difficult to know what else to make of it. The album is nothing but spectacular retro pop - wonderful if you love that sort of thing - however, you get the impression that one part of their career must have been some sort of a fad cash-in. It’s just not clear whether it was from the very beginning, or it's just starting now. Their sure technique displays that they know what they're doing with the style they chose. Yet, is it real? The point being that any professional musician can choose a style and pump out 10 to 12 songs, but we want to listen to something sincere, don’t we? Despite the hip-shaking groove that bops out of nearly every track from “Hard Times” forward, the song that truly sold me was lullaby ballad, “Fake Happy.” If anything, “fake it 'til you make it” is pretty much the realest description for motivating yourself, isn’t it? - Laura Engram

MUTOID MAN War Moans Sargent House With the metal/hardcore pedigree that the members of Mutoid Man have, I can’t believe I’ve never listened to them before. In fact, were it not for some friends of mine recently playing a show with them in Indianapolis, I may have never given them a listen. However, current and former members of Converge and Cave In shock and awe with their latest release, War Moans. The opening salvo of “Melt Your Mind” sets the tone for the album. It marries the pummeling drums of High On Fire with the hypertechnical punk of A Wilhelm Scream. And while I was never a fan of the cleaner vocals singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky adopted on Cave In’s Perfect Pitch Black album, it really fits well in this context. “Micro Aggression” is anything but micro in its aggressiveness, with blistering guitar lines played at breakneck speeds. “Kiss of Death” goes full stoner rock, recalling genre luminaries Kyuss at their prime (and Josh Homme would be proud of the double entendres that comprise the chorus). “Date With the Devil” continues the slightly slower tempos, but “Headrush” lives up to its name with its thrashy guitars and speedy tempo. - Jonathan Gluff

Dan Auerbach Waiting On A Song Easy Eye Sound As the singer/guitarist for every faux-hipster’s favorite band, The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach has already had a fairly successful career based on another band’s sound. (I’m inclined to agree with Jack White that Dan’s band is more or less The White Stripes with more blues and leather jackets.) But rather than the late ‘90s/early ‘00s for plagiarism “inspiration,” here he goes back to the heyday of blue-eyed soul, pop-folk, and funk. Sometimes, you can judge a book - or album - by its cover. In a so-obviousyou-can’t-miss-it way, the artwork betrays exactly how much it sounds like the ‘60s and ‘70s. Nearly every song reeks of a direct influence of an artist from those years; sometimes like a particular song (“Shine On Me” bears more than a passing resemblance to a pepped-up “Stuck In the Middle With You”), other times like a pastiche of an artist(s) (the title track smacks of Neil Diamond, while “King of a One Horse Town” sounds like Paul Simon channeling Otis Redding). Drawing occasional parallels to Bob Dylan and Don McLean wouldn’t be incorrect, either. That isn’t to say the album isn’t completely without merit. It’s positive, it’s upbeat, and - like the music of yore it too-closely emulates - it’s catchy as hell. It’s a good substitute for an oldies station, but it becomes derivative after the most superficial scrutiny. - Jonathan Gluff

NEWS4U JULY 2017 | MUSIC REVIEWS

MOUNTAIN GOATS Goths Merge Records There’s a peculiar but near-universal trait in almost all fans of all varieties of underground music: No matter the seemingly infinite and oddly specific subgenre, there is an intimacy and sense of ownership that comes with knowing a band/artist in their early years. It’s almost always coupled with a hipster-ish “I was listening to them before it was cool” vibe, and it’s all-tooeasy to write off newer material sight unseen. Having spent years listening to John Darnielle & Co.’s early output, I was conscious to not allow myself to fall victim to this mindset. But no matter how hard I try, I simply can’t get into Goths. I clung to any tiny speck of positivity, such as the horns on “For the Portuguese Goth Metal Bands” and other songs being reminiscent of some of the best output of The Microphones (another indie darling), the lyrics to "The Grey King and the Silver Flame Attunement" being somewhat clever, or that the bouncing beat of lead single “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds" makes it… unique? But not even name-dropping a postpunk/goth rock icon can save this album. If I had to describe this album in a single but informative sentence à la Robert Christgau, it would be “bad indie-tinged Steely Dan.” Skip it and go listen to The Sunset Tree again. - Jonathan Gluff

THE COLD STARES Head Bent Small Stone Records Rock duos that eschew traditional band structures tend to have an obviously less “full” sound. (See: The low sound frequencies missing from the bassless White Stripes and Black Keys, and the non-existent treble of bass-and-drum twosomes Death From Above 1979 and Hella.) But The Cold Stares are that rare pair who sacrifice a band member or two (or more) without paring down their presence. As a music reviewer, I’m doing my job well if a band compares themselves to another band/sound that I hear in them as well. So I felt especially proud that guitarist/vocalist Chris Tapp and I agree. He compared his tone to Mountain’s classic “Mississippi Queen,” and yes - it was literally the first thing I thought of as the main riff of Head Bent’s first track, “John,” kicked in. And I mean that in the best way possible. Elements of classic rock like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath pepper the album. The bridge of “Neighbor Blues” manages to recall both “Dazed and Confused” and “Iron Man” in an organic way (and Chris and I agree again, apparently), while “Price to Pay” pays homage to Mountain once again. But the guitar tone of “Kings” and “God and Country” wouldn’t be out of place on an album from Clutch or The Sword. Be sure to give these guys a listen. - Jonathan Gluff

PAPA ROACH Crooked Teeth Eleven Seven Music Despite the generic rock album cover and title, Crooked Teeth delivers everything we’ve missed from Papa Roach’s genre-defining glory days. The grittiest and most heavy hitting tracks on this gut-busting, guitarwailing endeavor swell up far past the impact of anything else we’ve heard before from the band. Even the least interesting songs on the album are still a whirlwind of everything most would expect from Papa Roach at its best. Launching out from the start with tracks like “Break the Fall," “Crooked Teeth," and “My Medication," Jacoby Shaddix raps relentless verses alongside shattering guitar riffs, in that famous Papa Roach style. Yet, with each concurrent offering you begin to notice new, modern elements interweaving into their classic rap metal nature. By the time we arrive at “Periscope," the trance-like pop elements feel like a foreshadowed and welcome release to the snarling and biting in the earlier half of the album. The duo of Shaddix and Skylar Grey is also undeniably lovely, albeit in a dark and heavy-hearted way. The songs that follow afterwards continue this mix of legend and innovation, a rap metal comeback-and-forward. - Laura Engram

SNOOP DOGG Neva Left Doggystyle Records Snoop Dogg proves not only that he’s still reliable with his fifteenth studio album, Neva Left, but also that he’s still the boss. Another retro-targeted release, Snoop attempts to recapture his old school sound. The rhythmic, minimalist jazz and dependable hip hop style props up his always consistent, unembellished mutterings. Remarkably full of catchy and enjoyable tracks, there isn’t much to glare at. Unfortunately, the album isn’t anything pointedly new either. Snoop has a lusciously rich and syrupy vocal flow, both carrying and accentuating raw and lively beats drawing from urban voices and influence. Apart from the words being uttered, as well as a few collaborative appearances, there isn’t a whole lot of inventiveness in this release. “Trash Bags” is classic gangsta rap, complete with the required list of alcohol and women’s names, and “Swivel” is your typical city street defensive posturing. Technically, they are both creatively executed, perfectly produced, and the lines believably spat. None of the tracks fail. How can they? It’s Snoop Dogg. He never left. I just can’t care that he never left. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • July 2017

JULY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. Uinta Hop Nosh IPA

Daniel Knight - 3.75

An American IPA, Hop Nosh pours a clear amber with plenty of head that settles to a thin film. There’s a lot of lacing and retention. The aroma is a bit too subtle, in my opinion, with hints of citrus and hops. That pulled the score down. The ABV is 7.3% - on the high side of an IPA and there’s a hint of booziness on the nose. The flavor is far more satisfying than the aroma with hints of citrus zest, grapefruit, herbal hops and just enough malts. The 82.4 IBU level is pretty high meaning that it’s undeniably hoppy. This will be the reason some love it and some won’t drink it. I liked it.

Paul Bragin - 4

A decent white head crowns this deep amber beer when poured into a tulip glass. A generous amount of citrus and some pine from the hops control the nose. The first sip of the beer seems sweet, but the hop presence slowly builds to a crescendo in the long finish. Hopheads will definitely want to try this year round IPA, but the faint of heart might want to stay away. Pair this one with spicy foods.

Jabez Martinez - 4.5

This is a nice, hazy, amber-colored beer with a very sweet flavor and an ABV of 7.3%. Like all IPAs, it's loaded with hops, but it doesn’t beat you over the head with that flavor. I have never heard of this brewery, but I really enjoyed their offering.

Goose ISLAND Summertime Kölsch

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

Summertime is a German Kölsch beer recipe. It pours up extremely clear and a pale dark straw color with a big, fluffy head that settles down to a thin film that remains for the duration. Its aroma is mild and uninspiring with malt and grains. The taste actually improves as it warms up a bit. Malts, grains, hops. The hops are mainly at the finish. This is a respectable brew in my opinion. It's true to its genre. Honestly, I didn't imagine I would be especially crazy about it. It's very drinkable and might be your favorite.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A formidable and thick off-white head forms on this beer after pouring it into a stange style glass. A nice balance of hop and malt scents fill the nose, with malt coming through a little stronger after a few seconds. The back and forth battle of malt and hops continues with the first tasting of the beer. This beer could pair well with spicy food like Thai or a variety of sausages and German dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear, straw-colored beer. It's your standard Kölsch - sort of bland but nothing flashy. In other words, it's your average European house beer. Usually Goose Island puts a positive twist on their beers, but this one is just ok.

Rogue Hot Tub Scholarship Lager

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

Rogue brews this one as a German-style helles lager. It pours up a clear honey color and makes a short dense head. There’s a lot of microfine effervescent bubbling in the glass. It has a nice aroma with mostly malts and a touch of grassy hops. The taste is refreshing with mostly pale malts, some hops and herbs. The mouthfeel is light to medium and the ongoing effervescence contributes to a refreshing light beer experience. This will make a nice, refreshing cool-down summer beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head rests on top of this golden pilsner after pouring it into a pilsner glass. The smell of malt first hits the nose, with some hop presence coming through just a second later. The beer hits the tongue with a light and crisp body and a good amount of malt flavor, followed by some hops in the finish. Try this seasonal between now and August. Pair it with lighter dishes like seafood and poultry.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a cloudy, yellow-colored beer. I think it's interesting that they give part of the profits back to a scholarship. This beer has a nice, smooth, sweet flavor - I consider this a session beer. It doesn't have any unique characteristics - it's just very easy to drink.

NEWS4U JULY 2017 | BEER REVIEWS

18 Street Brewery Temporal Purgatory

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

18th Street suggests that the name refers to the time between swigs as being purgatorylike. It pours up an appetizing cloudy, rich golden orange color with a quick-to-fade short, light tan head and lots of lacing. The aroma is complex with biscuity malts, floral hops, pineapple, peaches and more. The

taste carries more malts than most brews in this genre mirroring the nose with malts, floral and citrus hops. I really enjoyed this one. It reminds me a bit of Alpha King. If you enjoy pale ales and IPAs, I think you'll enjoy this one.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

This golden pale ale sports a thin white head upon pouring it into a traditional beer mug, but it evaporates quickly. A lot of hop notes flood the nose, especially tropical citrus. The first taste leaves a subtle hop presence, but it quickly intensifies into a much stronger flavor in the finish. People who enjoy hoppy

beers should drink this. Pair it with foods like roasted or grilled meats or a mild to medium Cheddar cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a hazy, amber-colored beer, and I can taste the sweet hops right away. As pale ales go, it's pretty smooth. The can itself is very interesting and has a very cool design. I was expecting some sort of stout or very complex beer but it's neither of those. It's better than average but not out of this world.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

NEWS4U JULY 2017 | WINE REVIEWS

WA L T E R T H E WINE GUY Liquor Locker's resident wine guru

A true national wine treasure: Napa Valley produces some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons around There are many varietals grown in California's Napa Valley, but the Cabernet Sauvignon ranks up there with the best made. The best aren't cheap, but they really shouldn't be. If you want a first growth Bordeaux, expect your credit card to moan when you buy it, but for quite a few dollars less, you can find a Napa Cab that will amaze you and your palate with the flavors of the best made wines. Here are four suggestions that will age well - all great wines to start or add to your cellar. Treat these wines right and they will give you so much enjoyment for your efforts. In my humble opinion, of course! First, drink now or hold for up to 10 years: 2012 Brandlin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Mt. Veeder appellation. The Brandlin family established growing grapes on the Mt. Veeder location in the 1870s and started the Brandlin Vineyards in 1926. The 2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is wonderfully produced with aromas of wild flowers and crushed berries on the nose. It's a tightly structured wine with well-integrated tannins. Once the wine opens, it pops with lush black fruit, chocolate and mocha. Available at our First Avenue and St. Joe locations. $61.99 2014 Venge “Silencieux” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley appellation. A true small batch wine (only 1790 six bottle cases produced), that is a blend of six different vineyards in Napa Valley. Powerful and fullbodied, it opens with scents of sweet cassis, anise, blackberries, roasted coffee, and vanilla. The tannins are firm upfront with a full mouthcoating that leads into a concentrated and lengthy finish. This wine is approachable now, and cellar-worthy in proper aging conditions. Best now through 2027. Available at our First Avenue and University locations. $50.99 Put these down from 1 to 20 years: 2014 Venge “Bone Ash” Vineyard Cabernet

Sauvignon, Calistoga appellation. The 2014 Bone Ash is Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at its best! Rich, jammy notes and cassis fill the senses, with aromatics that reside in the black fruit spectrum. The palate is concentrated, polished, and full-bodied. Black currant, blackberry, and ripe cassis are all intertwined with an acid and tannin balance that will deliver a wine that cellars beautifully. This wine will drink its best from 2018 to 2034. Available at our First Avenue and University locations. $110.42 2013 Caymus Vineyards “Special Selection” Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford appellation. This is a truly memorable wine that shows the concentration of epic vintage for Napa Cabernet. Initially aromatically subdued, this wine needs a one hour decant before it begins to fully unwind. It starts with seductive aromatics of black cherry and black plum along with mocha, tobacco, and sagebrush. This is a massive, masculine Cabernet which will need at least a year or two to fully amalgamate. Best from 2018 to 2040. Available at our First Avenue and Morgan Avenue locations. $175.99

2012 Brandlin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

2014 VENGE "SILENCIEUX"

Before I go... If you must put a wine rack on top of your fridge because it looks good, put empty bottles in it. Wine doesn't like to be kept in warmth - it will hasten its death! If you have room in your basement, find a cool dark corner, and set up a wine rack there. Make sure you store your wine on its side. Over time, the sediment in the wine will stick to the side of the bottle (this will take years); if you move the bottle of wine, know that you will stir up the sediment and need to allow time for it to re-settle. Until next time, don’t let the heat get the best of you, buy some rosés while you still can, and if you need some help, ask. Walt

WINE & DINE with Tony Majors

Hi, everyone! My name is Anthony (Tony) Majors, your resident Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers and it’s my pleasure to be able to contribute to News4U again this month on behalf of Evansville’s largest liquor store, Varsity Liquors. At 8,000 square feet filled with hundreds upon hundreds of selections, it’s easy to see why I am proud to be a part of Varsity’s team and love representing them. Their selection and customer service is second to none! Last month’s article about summertime white wines got me thinking… what about wines to drink with grilled food? Pairing wine with smoky, grilled food may seem tricky at first, but I’m here to help you demystify the task with a few tasty options. Grilled Chicken Thighs – Trefethen Chardonnay. This energetic Chardonnay is from one of Napa’s lesser-known cooler climates—Oak Knoll District—which helps the grapes maintain a vibrant acidity to cleanse the palate between succulent bites. Combine that with a touch of toasty oak to complement the charred chicken skin and it’s a match made in heaven. Barbequed ribs – Beran Zinfandel. Slather on the sweet, thick sauce and roll up your sleeves for this one. California Zinfandels tend to pack a punch in the flavor department, and it’s only right that we match them with smoky, smoky ribs. Bold flavors and a touch of residual sugar in the wine play nicely with a thick brown sugar sauce, so don’t be shy with the Sweet Baby Ray’s. Grilled steak – Hess Lion Tamer red blend. Steak and Cabernet, right? Well…sort of. Hess Lion Tamer is not a full-blooded Cabernet, but a steak wine no doubt. A Malbec-based blend with Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petite Sirah, and Merlot, this wine is meant for a steak. Serve it alongside a grilled filet mignon, T-bone, ribeye, or your favorite cut but please, be heavy-handed when piling mushrooms on top. Feel free to stop in or call the store with feedback on the pairings or to share your favorite! Also, please join us for a complimentary tasting of these wines on July 28 from 5-7 p.m. You can find us conveniently in the Shoe Carnival Towne Center next to Buffalo Wild Wings. See you soon! Cheers, Tony
