TROPICANA EVANSVILLE • JULY 8-10 All in the family: Revolution Ink Studio owner Shad Klos enlists the help of his kids to bring together a community of artists
I
t's been a long time coming, but the area's first major tattoo expo is finally a reality thanks in no small part to the Klos clan. The idea of staging a big gathering of the area's best tattoo artists has been on the table for years, but it wasn't until Revolution Ink Studio owner Shad Klos and his brood of talented kids - all of whom work with him at the shop - got firmly behind it that the wheels started turning. The end result, River City Tattoo Expo, is growing bigger by the day as the countdown to July 8 continues. More and more artists are being scheduled to appear at the convention as well as an expanding musical lineup, including recently-signed headliner, Saving Abel. While Revolution Ink Studio is based here in Evansville, tattoo shops from Newburgh, IN (Unspoken Art Studio), Danville, IL (Iron Tide Gallery) and Owensboro, KY (Tattoo FX and Mike White Tattoos) will also be represented. Another Evansville shop, Crooked Tree Gallery, rounds out the group. All total, nearly 20 of the area's very best tattoo artists are primed and ready to meet and share their knowledge and skills. Rest assured it's going to be unlike any convention this city has ever experienced. Most importantly, all of the artists will be available to design tattoos for patrons, so if you've been considering taking the plunge and getting inked, this is the time to do it!

No say in the matter: Attendance is mandatory as the crown prince of parody returns for another world tour
I
t's safe to say that most people figured "Weird Al" Yankovic for a novelty act when he released his self-titled debut back in 1983. With songs like "Another One Rides the Bus" and "My Bologna" parodying the chart-toppers of the day, the album seemingly had all the makings of a one-and-done idea. But there was a lot more going on underneath the surface. As more releases followed, it became apparent that not only was Yankovic uncannily adept at spoofing the biggest hits in rock, rap, R&B and more, but he could also craft insanely catchy original songs as well. Perhaps most impressively, he proved himself to be a vocal chameleon, able to croon in tune or spit rhymes with the best of them. And then there's his polka obsession. Throughout Yankovic's career of 33 years, he and his musically spot-on band have routinely stitched together outrageously funny accordion-inspired medleys of current hits. No doubt life is never quite the same after you've heard Al and the guys rip through a polka-fied "Enter Sandman" at break-neck speed. Unlike many of his more serious-minded peers, Yankovic has managed to stay relevant for over three decades, making huge waves with classic parodies like "Eat It," "Fat" and "Amish Paradise" at the height of MTV and creating a YouTube phenomenon with "White & Nerdy" off 2006's Straight Outta Lynwood. In 2014, he surprised everyone in the music industry by releasing his biggest album yet, Mandatory Fun. Featuring comedic takes on hits by Iggy Azalea, Pharrell Williams, Lorde and Robin Thicke, it put Yankovic on the map again in a big way. Just before heading out for the second leg of his "Mandatory World Tour," Yankovic kindly spoke with News4U about his enduring career in musical comedy. With the political process becoming a parody of itself and society out of whack, is 2016 the most "Weird Al" year ever - have you ever been more needed than right now? (Laughs) it's hard to say. I don't think there's ever been any period in time where comedy has not been an appropriate form of release. I mean, we always have things that are going crazy in pop culture and crazy in politics. And by the way, I tend to stay away from politics just because it's so divisive and it's also so ephemeral that it doesn't age well. But I don't
know if 2016 is any better for me than any of the previous years. As an editor and English major, I must personally thank you for the Robin Thicke parody, "Word Crimes." It's such a lyrically complex spoof - how long did it take to put that one together? Obviously, it's not just dashed off. All of my songs require a certain amount of work. I probably spent a couple of weeks making lists of all my own grammatical pet peeves. And I'm a big list-maker, so I made a big list like that and then tried to figure out how to cram all those pet peeves into the format of the Robin Thicke song. It was a real challenge, but I had a lot of fun writing that one. What often gets lost in the shuffle is your ability to write great original songs. The Devo-inspired "Dare to Be Stupid" has to rank as one of your finest moments. Well, thank you. That's a big fan favorite and it's in the live show for this tour which I'm happy about. I know we're not talking about the Hollywood Bowl show, but I mention it because that show is going to be with an orchestra, and I get to do "Dare to be Stupid" with strings. Your album covers are often just as much fun as your songs. I'm partial to 1999's Running With Scissors, but do you have a personal favorite? I think my favorite album cover might be Alpocalypse - being on the Four Horsemen at the end of civilization, and I'm just like, 'Hey, how ya doin'?' You are without question one of the nicest celebrities around. How have you maintained such a pleasant disposition? I think it's just my inherent personality, I guess. I'm really patient and polite, and I tend not to get very upset or angry very often. And I don't cont. on page 10

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS mind if someone asks me a question for the thousandth time - I try to pretend it's the first time that somebody's asked me that question. I like to respect people and try to make it a good interview. Speaking of interviews, back in the days of MTV you were known for splicing together mock Q&A's with stars like Eminem - essentially making them look rather silly. Would you consider bringing that concept back at some point? I love doing those. In fact, I did bring those back with the Nerdist Channel. I don't know if you saw any of them, but they let me do my own web series called Face to Face with "Weird Al" Yankovic. It was basically me doing those fake interviews like from the MTV days - but it was more movie stars than musicians. We did 10 episodes of that - it's all online. Those interviews are a lot of fun to do, but a lot of it boils down to me having the source material, because uncut interviews are sort of hard to find. But Nerdist has definitely left the door open and maybe that's something I'll come back to in the future. At the time, though, it was viewed as a sort of risky thing. I remember playing that Eminem interview for my band before it aired. I thought that they would laugh, but they were just stone-faced. At the end, they said, 'He's gonna kill you, man!' But I think they were more afraid for their own lives because they had to be on stage with me and they were like, 'He's going to open fire!' (laughs) Mandatory Fun has gone on to become the biggest album of your career. Do you plan to record a follow-up or will you just take it easy after the world tour? I don't have any solid plan. I think at some point I'm going to start recording more music, possibly doing more videos. I'd like to do more film and TV projects. I have a hope someday of working on a Broadway musical - that would be fun. But there's nothing that's locked in - which is kind of nice because I might actually just decide to take a bunch of time off and spend it with my family, which would be time well spent. But all my options are open to me; I love doing voice-over work - I've got the Milo Murphy's Law thing coming out in October on Disney XD which I'm excited about. Hair metal heaven awaits: Poison frontman Bret Michaels headlines two wild nights of live music
I
t's always the biggest party of the year. The annual Sudz on Green River music festival draws huge crowds, bringing together people from all over the tri-state to KC's Time Out Lounge for an incredible weekend of rock. And while the previous two events were crazy fun, the 2016 edition is going to take things to another level entirely. That's because the success of Sudz has made it possible to book one of the most iconic singers of all time: Poison frontman Bret Michaels. Rest assured it's going to be a wild scene in the Washington Square Mall parking lot outside of KC's as the hair metal hero blasts through a set of mega hits - "Talk Dirty to Me," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Nothin' But a Good Time," "I Want Action," "Something to Believe In," "Unskinny Bop" and more. This is a rare opportunity to see a global superstar right in our backyard. Opening for Michaels on Saturday night will be Gypsy Riot, a KC's favorite, while the after party inside the bar will feature Lt. Dan's New Legs. Singer Brett Scallions reflects on the band's roller coaster ride of a career and the joy of being in charge
I
f you were anywhere near a radio or watched MTV at all in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was virtually impossible to escape the post-grunge sound of Fuel. Songs like "Shimmer," "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" and "Bad Day" became the soundtrack for disaffected youth and seasoned rock fans alike, paving the way for the next wave of bands after the reign of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. But the music industry is a fickle business and by 2004, cracks were beginning to show; drummer Kevin Mullins was terminated and lead singer Brett Scallions left the band two years later. After a highly publicized search for a new vocalist (American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry was offered the position but declined), the remaining members of Fuel drafted in Toryn Green and recorded 2007's Angels & Devils. Longtime fans immediately cried foul. Minus the singular voice of Scallions, the band simply lacked the fire of the early days. Scallions spent his free time working on a number of side projects, most notably the heavy ensemble World Fire Brigade. But he simply couldn't ignore the siren call of Fuel. After testing the waters with a run of shows in 2010, a re-tooled version of the band with Scallions back at the helm (and as the main songwriter) headed into the studio in 2012 to record a new album. Puppet Strings was released in March of 2014, showing a whole new side of Fuel with elements of punk, blues and country western. Most importantly, it rocked as hard as ever. The band is currently out on tour, set to arrive at Backstage Bar & Grill on July 8. The band's breakthrough song, "Shimmer," wasn't nearly as big a hit on the charts as it seemed at the time yet its impact was huge. Are you surprised by the song's longevity nearly two decades later? That was a pivotal song for us - it was the beginning of everything for Fuel. We recorded that song a long, long time ago on our first demo that really

took off for us and helped us to get to where we are. Going in to make the Sunburn record, I think it was always understood that it was going to be the first single. It had a track record already. We were in Harrisburg, PA and we had a number one most-requested song on local radio stations and we weren't even on a record label. So that song built its own legs before anybody had a chance to really give it a shot in a global aspect. To think about it as still not being a chart-topper like some songs are - I mean, that song never even cracked the top 40. It wasn't right for that format for some reason - we never understood it. But at the same time, we kind of looked at it as a compliment because we were a little too aggressive for the charts maybe. We always wanted to be considered an aggressive rock band versus just a light-hearted pop act. 2003's Natural Selection proved to be the last recording by the original lineup. At the time, boy bands had really taken over the charts - a tangible shift in music trends was taking place. Even if the band had stayed together, what do you think the future would have held for Fuel at that point? I don't know (laughs). That's an amazing question. I've never been able to predict the future, unfortunately. But I would like to think that there still would have been a Fuel and that we would have continued to work on things. I think that when we were making the Natural Selection record it was kind of the beginning of the end for the music industry in general. The guys in the big offices were cashing in while they could, because they knew that eventually, with free downloading...I mean, music these days is nothing but a business card. It's a 'Hey, come to my show' kind of thing - you have to give it away. It's a really frustrating time with music and how things have progressed. cont. on page 14

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS After being the face and the voice of Fuel for so long, how difficult was it to watch the band carry on without you in the mid 2000s? You know, when I left Fuel, I told them, 'Guys, I'm out - I can't do this anymore.' I needed to explore other outlets and do other things. But I gave them my blessing. I said, 'If you think you can replace me and be successful with it, go for it.' And they went on the great search to find a singer and they found what they thought was right for them. They gave it a shot and made a record. But those situations like that, they're tough. It's hard to replace a singer and of course, it was a little difficult to see my baby that I was a part of for so long go on without me. But again, I gave them my blessing to do that. It was weird for me to hear what was being called a Fuel record and it not be my voice. Honestly, when I saw Chris Daughtry perform "Hemorrhage" on American Idol, I thought to myself, 'Wow, if he does this, they got a real shot at it.' And that made me a little nervous (laughs) - it seemed they might actually do well without me. Were you apprehensive at all about fronting Fuel again after being out of the picture for a number of years? I was definitely nervous about it, but I was excited at the same time. For me, I was looking at it thinking that there was a lot more freedom - thinking that I could really be engaged in it. I could control the final outcome. I had a number of songs that I had written - songs that I was working on right up to the point of making that record [Puppet Strings]. It was really fun for me. I wrote probably 85% of that record, if not more. It was exciting for me to be able to hold those reigns and do it my way and break away from what people had known Fuel to be for so long, to try and give the music a different style. You'll be playing a relatively small venue here in Evansville. Do you enjoy the up close and personal nature of intimate shows? Sometimes those can be more difficult shows - because the setting is so intimate and you can see the personalities and the faces. When you're playing to a sea of 30,000 people, you just see an ocean of people. But when you're in those small settings of 500 capacity or less, you can see how engaged people are - or how not engaged they are (laughs). Every musician has had that time on the stage when they look out there and people look bored. So that's when you go, 'I need to step it up a little bit' and give it to them a little harder. Wood & Wire's Tony Kamel talks about the highlight of the band's busy summer schedule (spoiler alert: it's ROMP) and much more
T
he countdown is on - just weeks to go before one of the most anticipated music festivals of the year finally gets underway in Owensboro. Hosted by the International Bluegrass Music Museum, ROMP never fails to bring together the very best talent in folk and bluegrass, and the 2016 lineup is stacked with some very big names, including Old Crow Medicine Show, Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush Band, Marty Stuart and Lee Ann Womack. But the festival also features some great up and coming acts such as Old Salt Union from Belleville, IL and Wood & Wire from Austin, TX. Of course, the music is just part of what brings people from all over the region and beyond to ROMP. It's a complete experience with arts & crafts, children's activities, IBMM exhibits, films and the scenic setting of Yellow Creek Park where you can camp out and take in the beauty of nature. Wood & Wire singer/guitarist Tony Kamel kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the festival. What makes Wood & Wire stand out from typical bluegrass bands? Well, it's hard to put a finger on it. I don't sit down to write a song and say, 'I need to write a bluegrass song.' Whether it comes out sounding like more of a traditional bluegrass-sounding song or whether it's just a song that I wrote that we play with some bluegrass instruments and bluegrass flavors, more often than not, it's the latter. It's usually just more of a song that I think sounds cool and my bandmates think is cool. I'm just going to write whatever the (bleep) I want to write - whatever subject matter I want to write about - and whatever feels the best within the band is what we'll play and record.

Speaking of subject matter, the band's "Dancin' on My Grave" is a real freight train of a song with some intriguing lyrics. The subject matter...it's just about ex-girlfriends or boyfriends or exes in general - I've got plenty of them (laughs). It's not a new theme in any style of music, and I wasn't specifically thinking about an ex-girlfriend whenever I was writing that song, but I like the imagery of dancing on someone's grave after they're gone if you didn't like them. That's where the seed came from. And it was sort of directed at a supposed ex that hates me and is pissed at me. But the style of the music - that's one of the more hard-driving tunes we do. It's very bluegrass - it has a banjo rolling quickly and mandolin sort of chugging along. And that's really one of my favorite ways to play bluegrass. It does seem that your tempos seriously increased from the debut album to 2015's The Coast. I think so. You know, everyone's first record - well, at least for us, we were a brand new band still figuring out what our sound was going to be. At the time, there was a band member who also wrote songs who is no longer in the band. So that's a change. I think it's true that we really sped up on the second album, but whether we keep following that trend...we might or we might change things up. As I'm writing the songs for the new record, some of them are definitely really quick and some aren't - I guess we'll see what churns out. That really just happens to be the style of tunes that I wrote for the second album - for that year. I'm scared of an agenda (laughs). Does the current lineup of the band feel like the best version of Wood & Wire? Oh yeah - we feel better than ever. The new member of the band - well, he's
not new anymore, he's been in the band for two years. His name is Billy Bright and he really helped us step up our game. He's older than we are - he's been around the scene a lot longer than us. He used to play with Peter Rowan and Tony Rice. Billy is just an incredible player and he's got a really distinct style of playing the mandolin. He really complements what the other guys (bassist Dom Fisher, banjoist Trevor Smith) and I do. So now we've had him for two years and we're getting ready to record our next record. We're over the moon, because we feel like we've finally found our sound. So what can you tell us about the next album? We're going to record in Austin - we recorded the last two in Nashville. We don't know just yet who we're going to use to produce it. But what we do know is that we want to do things really raw and live. We recorded our other albums live but we had separation so we could fix things. On this one, we want to record straight onto tape, raw and live - potentially just a few microphones. We practice so much and rehearse so much now that we want to be able to go into the studio and perform the songs as opposed to recording each instrument and making it perfect. We don't want to use any studio tricks. We want it to sound old - more old school - but it will still be Wood & Wire. I guess I do care what people think, but I don't, you know? We're just going to do what we want. I feel like because we do it that way people will like it. What's your take on the current bluegrass scene? We're pumped in general. The scene that we're coming up in is really great. The bands that are coming up with us are really, really good. Many of them will be at ROMP. It's not just us - there are some really good players and bands out there that are around our age and our level of popularity. We're all rising together. It's a cool, cool class of people out there right now. We're really honored to be a part of it. Being from Texas, how did the band's ROMP connection come about? We always wanted to play ROMP since we became aware of it, but we didn't meet the festival organizers until this past September/October in Raleigh, NC - which is where the International Bluegrass Music Conference is now held. We struck up a good rapport with them. But even before that, we were booked to play the IBMM in Owensboro. That's how it began. They came to see us play at the conference and ended up booking us for ROMP. It's a pretty old festival, but over the last five years, the organizers have done a really good job of modernizing it and bringing in some younger action and a ton of interesting music. Hard to believe, but the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival celebrated its silver anniversary last year - 25 years of amazing live performances by some of the hottest blues and Zydeco players around. The hugely successful 2015 event was headlined by Robert Randolph & The Family with support from the likes of Doyle Bramhall II and Victor Wainwright. In true Handy fashion, the festival organizers have once again put together a solid lineup for the 26th edition, with Wainwright returning for a Saturday night encore plus a much-anticipated Friday night performance by the one and only Fabulous Thunderbirds featuring Kim Wilson. Other acts scheduled to appear include Tommy Castro & The Painkillers, John Primer & The Real Deal, Curtis Salgado, The Beat Daddys and more.

CATCHING UP WITH...

LACROSSE

F
or more than a decade, 61-year-old Keith LaCrosse was the heart and soul of News4U. A tenacious and well-respected account executive, he developed great working relationships with seemingly every bar and restaurant owner in the city, always looking to pump up his clients' businesses and get the most out of each sale. In other words, Keith was damn good at his job. But then his life was turned upside down. When not chasing down another lead at the office, Keith loved to do freelance landscaping - a P/T side gig that brought in extra dollars and kept him busy. One night in October of 2014 he was doing some work for a friend. It was in a damp area with some standing water and lots of mosquitoes. The next morning, Keith didn't feel quite right and his malaise only got worse as the hours went by. At work, he wrapped himself in a winter coat and appeared ashen. Finally, after two days of misery, he asked his wife to take him to the emergency room. He doesn't remember the trip at all. By all rights, Keith should be dead by now. Diagnosed with both West Nile virus and Guillain-Barre syndrome, he's been languishing in various hospitals for the last 20 months, having survived all manner of dire medical scenarios. Early on, he battled back from a 105 degree temperature; later, there was a severe throat blockage that would have spelled the end had it not been for an ambulance stationed nearby. And that's not even counting the numerous bouts of pneumonia. Then, of course, there's the serious financial blow of being gravely ill. It's all been almost too much to take at times. The double whammy of West Nile and Guillain-Barre has left Keith confined to a wheelchair, partially paralyzed and only just recently able to speak and eat solid food. It's been a crazy, unfathomable journey. But FINALLY, he's back near his wife and family, having been moved into

hospice care at Signature Care in Newburgh just a few weeks ago after a long stint in Louisville. Most importantly, he's receiving physical therapy again (insurance woes left him unable to pay for treatment for a full six months, setting him way back in his recovery). I recently caught up with Keith at Signature Care - see some of our conversation below. One thing's for sure, this guy has an incredible spirit and has handled a terrible and often desperate situation with grace. We all miss Keith at News4U and wish the very best for him and his family! - TE What has been the best part about being back in the area? Well, my mother just turned 81 on Mother's Day and she and my son and daughter-in-law came out here and brought my new grandbaby. We all went out on the little gazebo area - that was really nice. What's something you've really missed about Evansville? My birthday is always the first week of October, and I always used to go down to the Fall Festival every day - for lunch and then I'd go back in the evening. I just love the food and the atmosphere. I haven't been able to go down there for the last two years. I don't know if I'll make it this year it's really difficult to go down there in a wheelchair. But I look forward to people bringing me food from the festival all week. What's your prognosis at this point and what are your hopes for the future? They're pretty much saying that I'm going to remain in a wheelchair. The arms I think will come back - I'm getting more range of motion every day. But the legs are a different story. But one thing I'm really looking forward to is my daughter's wedding. She's set a date: 5/6/17. She gave me a year to walk her down the aisle. That's my goal.

he good people at Komen Evansville are quite busy this summer with numerous fundraisers and meetings to prep for upcoming events, including the big Race for the Cure in September. First up is the Henderson Bowl for the Cure at Echo Lanes on June 9. Get your team together and sign up for a fun evening with friends or co-workers to help fight the battle against breast cancer. On June 16, a Race for the Cure meeting will take place at McCullough library to discuss logistics for this year's gathering of breast cancer survivors and supporters. Then a very important motivational Race for the Cure meeting will take place at Eastland Mall on the morning of June 29. The Team Captain Kick Off starts at 7 a.m. with discussions regarding best practices for fundraising and recruitment ideas. You may also pick up Race entry forms, yard signs, donation buckets, pledge forms and posters at this time.
ust a couple of days into her new partnership with local film production company, Blackstrap Media, Kristen Hobson mentioned (or "blurted out," as she recalls) to BM head Kevin Chenault that her dear friend Stephanie Henry's young daughter was going through a very difficult time. Little Sophia had been to the doctor for urinary tract infections and was given the 'all clear' back in January, but something still seemed off - she was losing weight and just didn't seem to be herself. Further testing revealed a tumor on Sophia's kidney. The family, including dad Steven Hairston, was sent to the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis where Sophia was diagnosed with stage 3 Neuroblastoma. Since then, her cancer has spread to her knees, neck and shoulders. Sophia's mom works two jobs but without medical insurance for her daughter, the financial strain is almost overwhelming. However, a GoFundMe page was recently set-up to off-set costs and now with the help of Blackstrap Media, a fundraising event is in the works to bring in even more money for the cause. On June 4, the Maryland St. Block Party will take over the 400 block of East Maryland Street from 2-7 p.m. - a fun afternoon and evening of food (provided by local food trucks), bands and more. hen Franklin St. Pizza Factory co-owner and chef Michael Wathen decided to open a pizza joint, he wanted to focus on the structure, ambiance and menu, so he enlisted longtime friend Kyle Kinder for the business side. With all bases covered, the two of them have opened an instantly successful addition to the vibe of Evansville's historic Franklin Street. Upon arrival, the love that went into it is clear - with custom, handmade tables and fixtures crafted by local welder Michael Nunning, concrete floors and stone accents, the restaurant has a modern look that still feels like home, and they're the only place in the area to sell delicious craft beer from Taxman Brewery in Bargersville. Now onto the food... Buttery Flatbread served with pesto and house-made pizza sauce coupled with Baked Spinach Artichoke Dip and Baked Artichoke Hearts were served first. The warm bread was an excellent vehicle for the creamy, savory dip and tangy, robust hearts, but I could have easily just eaten it with a spoon. Next I tried the Lox & Cream monthly market special, a cold pizza served on baked crust with smoked gouda and bacon, topped with salmon, capers, red onion, tomato, and a sour cream and chive drizzle. Colorful with an excellent flavor profile, it's a light and refreshing summer option. But of course, I had to try a signature pizza. The La Dolce Vita has a pesto base rather than red sauce, and although I'm not normally a fan of pesto, this is a mouthwatering creation with red onion, artichoke hearts, fresh spinach, a dusting of a mozzarella/provolone mix, seasoned chicken, roasted red peppers, feta, and garlic. The cracker crust and light amount of cheese and sauce truly allow the toppings to be center-stage. Still not done, Chef Michael also served their Chicken Alfredo Sandwich, saucy and filling, stuffed with chicken, cheese mix, onion, spinach, red pepper, feta, and served with a pickle (and in true West Side fashion, a pile of Grippos). Finally, who can turn down house-made Creme Brulee paired with a craft dessert beer? Not me, so I enjoyed the espresso bean dessert and a sample of Taxman Qualified - a sweet, darker Belgian ale. Besides several Taxman brews, Franklin St. Pizza Factory offers Tinman and Carson seasonals, a few domestics and several wines. ith a breathtaking view of the Ohio on Newburgh's historic waterfront, Edgewater Grille is the perfect place to enjoy delicious seafood, coastal favorites and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. There's an open, airy feel from the dining rooms with large windows, a cozy bar and picturesque patio dining right on the water. Fresh flowers adorn the white linen tablecloths, yet the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. Owner and chef Jacquie Schen has crafted her menu with great care, utilizing her background and worldly experience to provide dishes that are light and fresh, using some recipes that have been in her family for over 200 years. Born into a Lebanese family, she grew up in the British West Indies and attended college in Canada before settling in Newburgh with her husband and opening the restaurant. Taking pride in her work and community, Schen donates proceeds from market bread sales to United Caring Shelter, and spends most of her time at the restaurant making sure things run smoothly while fostering relationships with her guests. That same care is shown in their dishes - from homemade soups and breads to desserts and dressings, their food gets its flavor from natural ingredients such as house-grown herbs, lemon and extra-virgin olive oil, not relying on deep-frying or extra fat. During my visit, I enjoyed appetizers of Fresh Hummus served with hearty beefsteak tomatoes and warm pita bread and Crab Cake made with real crab, seasoned to perfection and served atop raw spinach with their specialty sauce, a tangy remoulade. A light but filling summer item is the Mediterranean Salad to which one can add a protein - I chose the Grilled Shrimp, flavorful with a slight crunch, and the Chicken Vegetable Marinara is a pasta dish hearty enough for two people, with spinach, mushrooms, real garlic, and the perfect ratio of marinara (with substance - not the pureed kind found in most places) sauteed with al dente penne. Desserts rotate (just ask your server), but I can honestly say the White Chocolate Cheesecake was the best I've ever had fluffy with fresh strawberries and caramel drizzle, and the Bread Pudding (which I

don't normally order) has a crunchy top, and although moistened with the bourbon glaze, it's not soggy like most. They also offer a room for private parties, true brick-oven pizza daily and breakfast on Sundays from 8 a.m. until noon. o you’re ready to try your first premium cigar. But a trip to Cigar! Cigar! can be overwhelming with over 1,200 to choose from. This column is going to give you the basics so you can enjoy your smoke like a seasoned cigar smoker.
Cigars range in flavor, strength, size and shape. It’s best to stick to a mild cigar to start, something like a Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real. These come in sizes that can smoke for 30 minutes to 90 minutes or longer.
Cutting and Lighting the Cigar: Premium cigars will always require the removal of a ‘cap’ of tobacco from the top or ‘head’ of the cigar. There are multiple ways to remove the cap. The most common method is a flat cut by a scissor or guillotine cigar cutter. Other cutters come with an angled blade called a V-Cut or Cat’s Eye cutter that gives an easier draw through the cigar. Then there’s the Punch that removes a circular plug, which gives a tighter draw. Once you’ve got the cigar cut it's time to light up the other end, which is called the ‘foot’. Use a butane torch lighter, wooden matches or thin strips of cedar wood called ‘spills’. Roll the foot over the top of the flame while puffing through the head until the entire foot is lit. While smoking, puff the smoke into your mouth but don’t inhale. Smoke slow and steady; smoking too fast will result in a bitter and harsh taste that no one will enjoy. Sit back and relax with a nice beverage and enjoy life and your cigar. Let the ash build up, don’t knock it off like a cigarette ash. W
hen Adam Hansen opened Pizza by the Guy in late 2000, the stretch of HWY 54 wasn't nearly as busy as it is now. Taking a giant leap of faith despite the location and competition with large chains turned out to be a wise choice- almost 16 years later, business is booming. Attribute the success to fresh ingredients (including dough made daily in-house), his dedicated staff, or his constant presence, but whatever the reasons are, it's working. His menu also keeps on growing as new ideas come to fruition. With twelve specialty pizzas, monthly specials (currently the Boss Hog), salads, twenty subs, pasta, calzones and several desserts, there's something for every appetite. During my visit, I tried a new item - the Sriracha Bourbon Wings. Meaty and tender, these wings pack a little heat, a little sweet and a lot of flavor. Since they're oven-roasted, they don't lose moisture during the cooking process. I dipped mine in ranch, but they're definitely tasty enough to stand alone. To keep the fire going, I tried the Buffalo Chicken Salad, a refreshing option, with shredded chicken tossed in sauce atop lettuce, onions, green peppers, sliced pepperoncinis, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Inevitably, I had to taste a couple of specialty pizzas, so The Big Guy was the first order of business. Hansen isn't kidding when he says, "It's In The Crust," because their secret, seven-ingredient blend of herbs and spices makes the chewy, golden crust an excellent palette for the fresh toppings. The tangy sauce, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions and green peppers are tucked under gooey cheese, with tomatoes and banana peppers on top. And what's better than a loaded baked potato? A loaded baked potato on great pizza crust, of course. The Loaded Baked Potato boasts a creamy potato base and crispy bacon under cheddar and mozzarella with a creamy ranch drizzle. To achieve all of that goodness without the crust getting soggy is quite an achievement! Next visit: Dirty Sticks (their most popular appetizer), a Hot Brown Sub, and a Smores dessert pizza. Pizza by the guy offers a lunch buffet during the week, and on Tuesday evenings and for Sunday lunch, kids 10 and under eat free. ANDY BRASHER He was born in a small town: guitar-slinging Knottsville native making big splash with country rock sound 35-year-old Andy Brasher grew up in a single-wide trailer in east Daviess County. With six family members it was tight quarters for sure, but what he remembers most is the love of music that was ingrained in him at an early age. "My dad played guitar and was always singing around the house, and we always had the radio on," Brasher says. Every couple of weeks, they'd all pile into the car and head into town with everything from country songs to 80's new wave blaring out of the speakers. That's when Brasher discovered his knack for picking up on lyrics which his parents encouraged and even bragged about to friends. There would be an at times hilarious learning curve, but his musical talent was starting to emerge. In sixth grade, Brasher entered the annual talent show and left everyone scratching their heads with an odd cover of Peter, Paul & Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane." "I couldn't actually play chords on the guitar, so all I was doing was picking out the melody - just single notes with no context," he recalls, still amused by the scene all these years later. But soon enough, Brasher's dad taught him the basics. "That's when I got really addicted to the guitar, and I could see the progress - I began playing and singing at the same time, building a catalog of all these songs I knew." At 15, Brasher acquired his first electric guitar. It changed everything. "I was in a band within a week or two - we knew three songs and our first gig was at a church out in Ohio County," he says. "I'll never forget the show because everyone was so polite." Postperformance, the lead singer stopped coming to rehearsals and Brasher stepped in to fill the role - a fateful move. "The feeling I got from that was just incredible, and I realized that's what I wanted to focus on - I gradually got out of sports," he explains. The college years found Brasher attending OCC but at a loss as to why he was there, though he eventually earned an Associate of Arts degree ("Never used it for anything"). However, he did feel much more certain about his musical future, playing numerous solo acoustic gigs in the Big O and Bowling Green at places like
the Boiler Room and Taylor's Tavern. And he wrote a lot of songs. Eventually, he ventured further out to cities like Nashville and Gatlinburg and even booked himself several tours across the U.S. By 2007, he felt confident enough to record an album, a stripped down affair titled Crows & Buzzards which neatly married his country and 90's influences like Pearl Jam and Aaron Lewis of Staind. Not only did people like it, they bought it. Around this time, Brasher began a very successful musical partnership with a Nashville buddy, Dustin Bogue. The pair released an album and two EPs and toured all over the Midwest and the south to the tune of 100 shows a year; they even traveled and played with Kenny Chesney for 14 dates. Somehow, Brasher also managed to squeeze in another solo album, Last of Our Kind, a more layered collection of songs that featured a full band sound. The two friends stopped touring in March of last year. Since then, Brasher has been full steam ahead, busier than ever. He's particularly excited about the new album in the works. "Ross Hogart, who recorded John Mellencamp's Scarecrow album and has won three Grammys, is helping me get everything set up in the studio - Blackbird Studio in Nashville," Brasher says, clearly in awe of his good fortune. "He really believes in my music and wants to make the album as good as possible. He's flying in from LA to help out." There's no timetable for the release, however, a situation that Brasher finds very freeing. "The goal is to be done with it when it's perfect. I'll shop it around and see if I can get any interest from labels. if that doesn't work out then I'll have something great to sell at my merch tables." Follow Andy Brasher on Facebook.

Owensboro tattoo artist feels right at home with the guys, continually challenges herself to push the limits of design As portrayed on TV and in films, the stereotypical view of tattoo shops is that of a grungy boy's club. But the reality is often much different. Check out any of the area businesses and you're more than likely to find a sterile environment, as clean as any hospital - and chances are there will be at least one female artist on board. As interest in tattoos continues to grow, more and more women are getting involved in the industry, proving that gender is not a barrier to success. Western Kentucky's Gabriele Wright knows firsthand what it takes to make it. The 25-year-old is one of the many talented artists at Tattoo FX in Owensboro - the sole female on staff. But she's quite comfortable in that environment, determined to blaze a trail for other women to follow. We caught up with Wright before the start of another day of designing to discuss life in the tattoo industry, her invitation to the upcoming River City Tattoo Expo in early July and more. Let's start with what age you were when you got your first tattoo. I got my first tattoo when I was 15 - which is pretty young. I don't regret it, but I also don't necessarily approve of 15-year-olds getting tattoos. I mean, when I got my first one it was a horrible experience - It was way more painful than what I imagined. But I felt like if I was going to do anything with art, that was the direction I wanted go in. I've always been interested in self-expression, especially things outside of the norm. I really didn't want to fall into the category of graphic design or other common art-based jobs. Regardless of gender, how difficult is it to make it as a tattoo artist? I've seen a lot of very talented people not be able to make it in the tattoo business because of how hard it is as a whole. You have to be both creative and technical. Many people will ask for you to come up with a design while others will bring in a drawing or picture of exactly what they want. And then there's the simple fact that tattooing is a whole different skill set from drawing on a piece of paper. You can hold a piece of paper still. It doesn't talk back and doesn't get nervous or anxious or feel pain. You need to be able to understand the experience from the client's perspective. Do you have a particular style in terms of design? That's a hard

question. I personally try not to have a style, so I don't limit myself to just doing one thing. I like to do black and grey designs and I enjoy realism and detail - that all comes really naturally to me. I also like to take ideas and inspiration from jewelry and fashion and turn them into tattoos that are wearable forever. But I want to continually challenge myself and be able to say that I can do all kinds of designs. Do you have a favorite piece that you've designed? Well, I did a shoulder piece that was lace and the reason why that stands out is because there was really no way for me to draw it on paper beforehand and get my ideas together. Instead, I had to freehand it with markers which was stressful. I didn't want the client to come in that day expecting to get that design and me not be able to deliver it or create something that we were both happy with. It was a challenge for me, but it's probably the tattoo that I'm most proud of, because it pushed my limits. River City Fest will bring together artists from all over the region. Are you excited to meet everyone? I think it's awesome. A lot of people who aren't familiar with the tattoo industry think that everybody is out to get each other because of the way it's portrayed on TV - that it's all drama. I'm not saying that everybody gets along - some personalities just clash. But every convention that I've ever gone to and all of the artists I've met from all over the world have been super-encouraging - they're very open to teaching other people the things that they have learned. WITH BILLY EGELER Safety first: taking extra precautions should be foremost in minds of area drivers
W
ith the horrible tragedy that happened at Southern Ohio Speedway recently, I've found myself thinking about the safety of racers now more than ever. It's sad that it takes something like this to open eyes and make you think about what can be done to keep this from happening again. I have often wondered why anyone would climb in a race car without the maximum amount of safety equipment. Is it because the racer thinks he or she can't get hurt? Nothing like that can happen to me? Or is it lack of funds and or knowledge? Racers will spend their last dime in most cases for that extra 1 or 2 horsepower, new tires or to make their car look good. Yet they won't spend the extra money for items MADE to help keep them safe. The guys in modified and late models should really stop and think about something... Almost EVERY car has a window opening of 11" - maybe a touch more on some. Add in the full containment seats which make it more difficult

getting in, much less getting out. Now let's think about how fast you are able to exit the car in an emergency situation. And if you wear a Hans device (which EVERY driver should), can you get out with it and your helmet on? Most of the time, exiting the cockpit of these types of cars with full safety gear slows down the time or even with the steering wheel still on. Now, let's think about this... Almost EVERY mod or late model has to add weight to be able to "make the minimum requirement." Can't you do your family, friends and ones that care about you a favor and spend the $425 to install an onboard fire suppression system that only weighs eight pounds?? These
systems can add crucial seconds of protection to you if needed. Typically, a driving suit with a SFI 3.2A/1 suit is a single layer, cotton suit enhanced with a fire resistance chemical. This type suit will only protect you From 2nd degree burns for three seconds. A suit with an SFI 3.2A/5 certification is most commonly seen on a multi-layer suit. These suits will protect you from 2nd degree burns for up to 10 seconds per layer. Yes this type of suit will cost the driver a little more, but what is your life worth to you and the ones that love you? Think about your future! If you are getting in a race vehicle of ANY type and you can't afford proper safety equipment, you CAN'T afford to race, bottom line! With that being said, I have started a project to help drivers at five of our local tracks obtain crucial safety equipment. I have been reaching out to businesses, friends and fans to donate to the project. I am taking the funds they donate and purchasing five onboard fire suppression systems, fire proof driving gloves, roll bar padding, window nets and much more. I will then randomly visit these tracks and give each driver that is racing at the track that night a ticket. During the drivers meeting, we will draw at least one ticket and give away a safety item. I have a goal to give away $10,000 worth of safety items by the end of the racing season. Just one month in and we have already purchased nearly $3,000 worth of items and hope to start giving these items away by the time this issue drops! Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP World Champion, multi time AMA National Champion and MotoGP Hall of Famer has now won events in the world's three top motorcycle road racing series and is only one AMA Mile dirt track win from becoming only the fifth rider in history to join the "Grand Slam Club." Many people overlook what not only Nicky but Tommy and Roger Hayden have been able to accomplish at such a young age. These three Owensboro residents have put the tri-state on the map and didn't have to use the "common" stick and ball method! Following along in the Hayden's footsteps are Owensboro riders JD Beach, Hayden Gillim, Nick McFadden and Princeton, KY native and now Owensboro resident, Jake Lewis. Guitarist Johnny Hickman talks band longevity, the Crumbs and being brave - and crazy - in the music business
L
ast month we previewed the upcoming Cracker show at Lincoln Amphitheatre. This month we're pleased to share an interview with co-founder/guitarist Johnny Hickman who, along with lead singer/guitarist David Lowery, played a major role in defining the alternative rock sound of the 90s and beyond, most notably with the classic track "Low" off the band's sophomore effort, Kerosene Hat. Over 20 years and numerous recordings later, Cracker released perhaps its greatest album to date, 2014's Berkeley to Bakersfield. The 18-song collection perfectly showcased the group's influences, from garage rock and psychedelia to folk and Americana. Despite numerous lineup changes over 25 years, you and David have remained the core of the band. How do you explain such a lasting partnership in such a fleeting business? We’re pretty different as personalities go, but I believe that’s actually a plus for us as much as anything else. At the core of why it works is the fact that we’ve both always instinctively known that the song is more important than anyone’s ego. That’s why it’s pretty rare that a band is actually a true democracy. In reality, there are usually one or two songwriters, a manager maybe, who are actually steering the ship creatively and career wise. We set Cracker up that way from the onset. Obviously, "Low" was the song that made the biggest impact on the charts. But how many times over the last 25 years have you found yourself asking, "How was (insert Cracker song title) not a hit?" “Low” definitely brought things to a new level for us but “Teen Angst” (What the World Needs Now) from the first album was the one that got our feet in the door. Of course no one has the crystal ball that can predict a hit, it’s a lot to do with the right sound at the right time I think. We love all of our songs to one degree or another, but yeah sure. From Kerosene Hat, I would have predicted “Movie Star” as a big one before I would have thought that both “Eurotrash Girl” and “Get Off This” would be radio hits like they were. In the big picture, some people only know you by what they hear on the radio but the true fans are much more into their favorite deep album tracks as they are referred to, and those people are the ones that really count anyway.

Speaking of true fans, when did you and David first become aware of the band's cult following? It’s a gradual thing to realize. You notice it in increments. We’d play a festival and of course everybody is responding to the radio hits, but then you begin to notice the people who are singing along to almost all of the songs or calling out for their favorites that never had any airplay. Then you notice that these folks are coming to as many Cracker shows as they can. I make it a point to go say hello to them if possible, or at least connect with them on social media when there’s time. They are the ones always bringing their friends into the big extended family. The Crumbs as they call themselves. I love them. With Berkeley to Bakersfield, Cracker went all in with a double album - with a concept, no less. Why aren't more bands as brave as yours? The world would be a better place... Ha ha, thank you. Brave, crazy or a little bit of both with Lowery and Hickman! We’ve always just done things our own way and Berkeley to Bakersfield was a natural step for us in its weird way. The music business is in a major state of flux and turmoil indeed, but we found our way around it by doing something that made little sense on paper perhaps, but made complete sense to us as artists. Hell yes, let’s make two discs with mostly different backing musicians and put them out in one package! We’ve never seen ourselves as a band getting together once in a while to trot out the old songs like many do. Your live shows are a big part of why Cracker continues to prosper in challenging musical times. Are you feeling a boost this time around with such a great new collection of songs in your arsenal? Thanks. As I always tell up and coming young artists like The Yawpers from Colorado who I just produced, being a great live band is your best defense in this crazy business. That and having some cool posters and shirts as well as your music for sale at your shows. That’s what keeps gas in the van! And yes, we are playing plenty of Berkeley to Bakersfield songs in the current shows as well as a little something from every one of our ten albums. New metalcore outfit looking to make some noise at the River City Tattoo Expo and beyond Back at the beginning of 2015, 19-year-old drummer Eddie Goebel made a trip to Guitar Center to pick up some gear and mess around on a kit or two. He left as the member of a heavy new group. "I didn't do anything impressive [on drums], but for some reason I caught the eye of Tyson (Senger, former Velaina vocalist) and he approached me," Goebel explains. "He asked if I was in a band and said that he needed a drummer really bad. We ended up getting together to write at his house in Newburgh - just the two of us. Slowly, one by one, we started adding more players." After a year of lineup changes - including the exit of Senger - and a host of temporary band names, all the pieces finally came together. Goebel, along with vocalist Aaron Lane, guitarist John Rosenberger, guitarist/vocalist Josh Redman and bassist Tony Blondin, debuted Velaina at WIRED in downtown Evansville on April 30. Despite all the upheaval and limited practice time, the show went down a storm with kids screaming the words to ferocious songs like "Filthy Traditions" back at Lane. This from a band whose repertoire only consists of about five songs. But the somewhat surprising reception to Velaina's inaugural performance can be partially attributed to the success of their first single and video. Curiously, none of the members seem to care much for "Filthy Traditions" - perhaps because it was written before the current lineup solidified - but regardless, it's proved to be a useful calling card. Now the guys are focused on recording new material up in Indianapolis with the hope of putting out an EP. But they're not in any hurry. "We don't want to rush songwriting," Blondin says. "A lot of bands do that and you can tell. We're trying not to just throw a bunch of crap together." Velaina is also trying not to adhere to a particular style. "Back in the day, we wanted to be super technical and have odd time signatures," Goebel explains. "We actually started off in drop F which is horrendously low. Now we play in drop A, and our intention is just to play whatever we want to play and not sound like any particular band. We just want to appeal to anybody in the heavy music scene." By popular demand, Velaina returns to WIRED on June 25 and will rock the River City Tattoo Expo at Tropicana Evansville July 8-10. But ultimately, the guys want to move beyond the tri-state. "We're trying to make this band a real success," Redman says. "We would love to play out and be on the road 10 months a year - that's the dream." Follow Velaina on Facebook.

Josh Merritt, lead singer of the Josh Merritt Band, says he prefers clothes that are somewhat plain and simple because, “…it’s all about how you wear it!” For shows he may wear boots, a plain tee jazzed up with a vest and cuffed jeans for a little extra spunk. “I don't think you have to spend a lot of money to look good. It's all about finding a style that works for you and going with it,” Josh explains. Haynie’s Corner hunk, Wade Cartwright, agrees that men’s summer style should be simple and debonair, not too many colors or patterns at once - a neat, clean look. Cartwright was humble in our discussion saying, “These are the guidelines I use to dress myself everyday, maybe not the most trendy, but I don't think I'll be ashamed to see old photos of myself in the future.”

When asked if shopping local for fashion is important to him he answered, “It’s like I always say, think global, buy local.” He went on to describe how shopping local is important because of its impact on the local economy. So there you have it, men. This summer, express yourself, but don’t feel obligated to go over the top. Keep it simple, and shop local for men’s fashion whenever possible. Church can be really boring sometimes. Is it really required that I go every Sunday to have a relationship with god?

here is nothing worse than a boring church service. Worship is supposed to be joyful – a celebration. Each faith community decides what that means for them. Sometimes we “click” with what is going on. Sometimes we don’t. And let’s be honest: nobody bats a thousand. Sometimes worship is really good. Sometimes it's not. But every congregation must strive to offer their very best worship on a very regular basis. In my tradition, church attendance cannot be “required.” We can highly recommend it, but we don’t have any mechanism to “force” people to attend worship. But, here’s the thing: we’re all looking for a community. We’re all looking for contact with other people. We all need a group that encourages and supports the person we are trying to be every day. That’s what the church is when it's at its best. The church is a community of fallible people, who fail on a regular basis at being the people God calls us to be. We are imperfect and inadequate. Still, we get together to admit how badly we’ve messed up and we cheer each other on to do a better job in the week ahead. Binge-watch and Purge (Or “Netflix and Ill”) Hi, my name is Jonathan (This is where you all feign interest and say, “Hi, Jonathan!”), and I’m an addict. I’ve been on a bad binge for a while now. Like so many people my age, I’ve fallen victim to the familiar binge/purge cycle that is… streaming television. I know, I know. I’ve been there. I’ve been the one to say, “No, it’ll never happen to me!” Then, you get that first taste. Maybe it’s something small, like, “Hey, it’s only one episode of It’s Always Sunny. What harm could it do?” … You awaken to light cutting through the blinds. It slices your eyelids apart, all hot little daggers as you ignore whatever obscure British workplace comedy you just spent the night with. The credit card is on the table next to your phone. “What time is it? Hell, what day is it?” you mutter as you unlock the screen. It’s Monday morning, and if the payment confirmation screen that the hand computer opens to is any indication, you subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video and blew the whole weekend re-watching Lost. You might have to add Spotify and Tidal both into the mix later just to “get well,” as you’re now calling it. To make it worse, all your friends are just as deep in it as you. At first, it was fun, a few Rick and Morty in-jokes between friends. But now, it’s affecting your everyday relationships. You slip an Archer reference into an argument with your dad. You kneejerk correct your boss asking, “Is this them?” by saying, “Are these they?” You instinctively mumble “That was 90% gravity” as the bartender drops your drink. No one appreciates your “Baler? Hardly knew ‘er!” reference as you crush some more cardboard. (Just kidding; that gets a laugh like 60% of the time.) Dejectedly, you ask yourself, “What would Burt Macklin do?” I know I’m not the first to speak about how easy it is to fall into the trap of binge-watching. But despite my metaphor of it being like a drug, I’m actually all for it. It gives us, the fans, the final word on what makes it and what doesn’t, rather than some out-of-touch network executive throwing money at whatever he/she thinks has the most mass appeal and can fetch the most advertising dollars. But that’s another matter for another time... -JG

Making the Case for Knight as VP
Don't be so Hard on Yourself "Mistakes are always forgivable if one has the courage to admit them." - Bruce Lee No one on this entire planet is perfect, although the desperate pursuit is always there, the pressure ingrained in our minds from birth. We're taught that only x plus y equals success, to adhere to this litmus test of how we should live our lives. Schooling, career choices, relationships, money, how we raise our children - it's a vicious cycle, constantly ignoring our spirituality while we mow down the "American Dream." And by spirituality, I don't necessarily mean religion. I'm talking about meditation, self-love, acceptance, being grounded, and how we treat one another without expectations of reciprocation or accolades. It's difficult sometimes to balance these things, especially when it comes to relationships. Everyone wants to be loved, accepted, and to be seen in a positive light, but here we are, just being human. I've found myself run down in the past year - it's been an unchained rollercoaster, and although I've made mistakes, allowed myself to be hurt by the actions of others that are ultimately reflections of their own pain, I've done the same. It's sometimes easier to pretend that we are always correct rather than admit, 'Hey, I f-ed up. I'm sorry,' and it's even easier to avoid that confrontation altogether. I've been accused many times in my life of being "unapproachable" or "difficult to talk to" because I've never felt the need to sugarcoat things and I'd rather just sit down and quash whatever needs to be addressed. I don't always get the outcome I'd prefer, but I'm also willing to forgive, try again, and eventually, if need be for my own peace, to walk away. But personally, I'd rather risk the discomfort of facing my mistake or expressing my feelings than let it eat away at a chance of redemption. Life is too damn short. A great friend once shared this reflection piece with me: How can I learn to see this perceived curse as a blessing? How can I grow from here? What is life trying to teach me? What does my soul want the rest of its journey to look like? How am I being invited to transform? Don't be so hard on yourself, say how you feel, remind others of what they mean to you, and know when to let go. Many tri-staters saw former IU basketball coach Bobby Knight campaign with Trump when he came to Evansville. What people saw were two excellent speakers commanding the stage, demanding the audience's attention. Trump’s team will be vetting hundreds of candidates to be his running mate. This will include politicians, business people, and some people in the entertainment industry, but let me make the case for Knight. First, Knight has Midwestern roots; he was born in the swing state of Ohio and is well-known and respected in other Midwestern swing states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota. Despite being controversial, "The General" has always been successful on and off the court. On a personal note, Knight has been divorced once but there have never been any reports of infidelities. His clean record should provide a much-needed balance for the ticket. Being a well-respected sports figure, Knight also has developed friendships with some of the most notable names in sports. This includes Duke Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, former baseball manager Tony Larussa and former football coach Bill Parcells. Knight helped Trump win Indiana with his status as a sports icon. Just think what other sports icons in other states could do. This is just a fantasy from one Indiana basketball fan, but it is something to seriously ponder. ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT MEET ALICE, NICKY & BELLA Alice is a tortoiseshell female cat with a matching “tortietude.” She enjoys attention, but on her own terms! This gorgeous girl is 2 years old and has waited on a home at VHS longer than all 120 of the other cats. She’ll enjoy a home with lots of sunbeams in which to bask and a cat tree on which to snooze. She can live peacefully with other cats, and currently lives in the Cageless Cat Lounge! Alice will go home spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and FeLV/FIV tested for only $30!
Nicky is a 13-year-old male Chihuahua! He and his siblings, JoJo and Kay, were surrendered to VHS when their owner’s health and finances made managing three dogs pretty difficult. They are all very well-tempered, like car rides, and get along great with other animals. Being a senior means Nicky will have a harder time finding a home, but all he wants is a comfy couch where he can spend his golden years! His $120 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and heartworm test. Adopt two dogs at the same time to the same household and get a $25 discount!
Meet Bella, one of FOUR potbellied pigs up for adoption right now! She’s a 2 year-old female and weighs 64 lbs. She’s housetrained and leash-trained. Pigs are very social animals and actually very clean. They’ll do just fine as indoor pets! Bella is a little nervous in big crowds and around big exuberant dogs, so she’d need a family without a lot of ruckus. But she has gotten along great with cats, kids, rabbits, & calmer dogs. She is spayed and vaccinated. Her favorite snacks are apples & oranges and she enjoys fresh veggies too. Bella’s adoption fee is $250. Pigs are not allowed in Evansville city limits, so someone in the county or out of town will need to give her a forever home!

After losing the two most important people in my life, I decided to go back to something I'd always loved: volunteering at the VHS. My "job" was to take a puppy or dog to a local nursing home twice a month to visit the residents who lived there. In November of 2011, I'd gone to the shelter to choose a pup for that day, and while there were none available, there was a little brown dog barking up a storm, begging for love from anyone who passed her enclosure. I chose to take her, and the moment I attached a leash to her collar, she was remarkably calm and very loving. They told me that she was five years old, and had already been there for five months. After two hours at the nursing home, I fell in love with Lucy and adopted her the next day. Lucy has been stuck to me like glue for the last five years. She may be small, but she's got a mighty personality and a heart as big as the sun! People have commented to me that I "saved her" when I brought her home, but I can honestly say that Lucy "saved me" too! - Sarah Grove

Mother's Day (PG-13) Open Road Films
Directed by Garry Marshall, Mother’s Day is the third film in a genre that intertwines the lives of individuals with the backdrop of a holiday that has been commercialized in America. Like Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, Mother’s Day tells the story of several characters with different backgrounds and their relationships with their mothers and the highs and lows of motherhood. The movie includes a recently divorced mother; a far-right conservative mother coming to grips with having a lesbian for a daughter and another daughter married to an Indian; a mother with a toddler who has abandonment issues; a grief-stricken father coping with having to spend his first Mother’s Day alone; a mother who gave up her daughter at birth now reconnecting with her as an adult. As the movie progresses, we see the trials and tribulations that each of these mothers have to endure. The divorced mother has to cope with her ex-husband marrying a much younger woman; the conservative mother has to cope with the fact that not only who her daughters have chosen as a partner but they kept it a secret from her; the mother with the toddler has to decide if she wants to marry her babies’ daddy; the grief-stricken father has problems moving on with his life. Finally, the mother who gave up her daughter has to explain her reasoning for giving her up. While the central theme surrounding Valentine’s Day was love and New Year’s Eve was new beginnings, Mother’s Day revolves around the relationship between a mother and her children. While the movie could have done a better job making this the central point of the movie, Mother’s Day did show many of the hardships modern mothers face these days. - Bryan Fox

It’s the train wreck that everyone LOVES to watch happen, no matter the outcome: a live-television recording of a hostage situation involving Lee Gates (George Clooney), host of the financial network show Money Monster, and a broke and unstable shareholder named Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) with a gun and an explosive-packed vest. Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) has to direct the show with her crew while they investigate where $800 million disappeared to before Lee and the entire studio are blown to pieces right before viewers' eyes.
While the plotline sounds suspenseful, the film is mostly anti-climactic and predictable throughout. Once you’ve seen a hostage situation drama, you’ve seen them all! Still, despite the cheesy New York-accented police officers and the anticipated silent love story between Lee and Patty, Money Monster is worth the price of admission simply because of the always exceptional Clooney, Roberts, and O’Connell and the righteous ‘search for justice’ ideology that accompanies the storyline. While most movies that question social justice and business morals can be incredibly preachy and tacky, this film is quite the opposite. Witty banter between the all-star lineup of actors takes the edge off of the real question, “Where DOES our money go when it’s lost in the market?” Money Monster is ethically stimulating and brings to light legitimate problems within our financial world today, but it's really more for those who love the actors involved or anyone who's in need of a hostage situation fix. - Alysha Rice

Intrepid Pictures/Netflix True anticipatory horror films are few and far between. Not relying solely on jumpy scenes and gore (although it's not lacking in this arena), Hush purveys complete palmsweating, heart-pounding terror in the form of real-life possibilities - reminding viewers that humans are ultimately more frightening than any supernatural force or monster. Maddie Young (Kate Siegel, Oculus/ co-writer) lives alone in a secluded wooded area - the perfect environment for her work as a fiction writer - but after a short visit from her neighbor, the evening turns into something nightmares are made of. Deaf and mute from bacterial meningitis since age 13, she is faced with isolation and desperation she's never before experienced, forced to make a choice: give up or use her sensory losses advantageously. With a chilling performance by John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom) as the militant home invader and an authentic portrayal of Maddie by a hearing person, Hush is hands-down the best white-knuckle slasher I've seen in a long time. To pack that much anxiety into 80 minutes with less than 15 minutes of dialogue is quite an achievement. I think it's safe to say we can expect more heavy-hitting horror flicks from writer/ director Mike Flanagan. Seriously impressed.

When Sara Price receives a phone call from police in Japan stating that her twin sister Jess has disappeared into the Aokigahara Forest, the most popular site for suicide in Japan, she quickly boards a plane determined to find her. Upon arrival, she is met with what she believes is nonsensical mythology about yurei (angry ghosts) inhabiting the forest, and is vehemently begged not to enter. Dismissive and convinced that Jess is still alive, Sara seeks the help of travel journalist Aiden (Taylor Kinney, Chicago Fire) after meeting him at one of the last places Jess was seen with the agreement that he can document her story for an article. Delving deeper into the forest after their guide refuses to stay through the night, lines between reality and myth become blurred, and Sara's now faced with the feat of staying alive while trying to find her twin the same. The Price sisters are mildly portrayed by Natalie Dormer of The Tudors and Game of Thrones, maybe to be expected with boring dialogue, scant scares, and little character development. With such a broad opportunity for a great film, it feels thin despite the budget, scenery, and cast, and somewhat of a disappointment as fledgling director Jason Zada's first feature film - a patchy psychological thriller coined as horror. - Whitney Patterson

The all-star musicians behind the scenes of Lemonade are what truly make it a great album. The writing and production credits include the likes of Led Zeppelin, Animal Collective, Diplo, James Blake, Jack White, Father John Misty and Kendrick Lamar (just to name a few). The eclectic cast brings out the best in Beyoncé who brings out the best in pop music.
Deakin Sleep Cycle My Animal Home After seven years of waiting, Animal Collective guitarist Josh Dibb - aka Deakin - has finally followed through on his Kickstarter promise to record and release his debut album. Though Sleep Cycle is only six songs and a little over half an hour, it's quite beautiful and serene. While his Animal Collective kin went into the studio and farted out Painting With without him, Deakin really took his time soul searching and crafting a great piece of art. Kevin Morby Singing Saw Dead Oceans Singing Saw is a hike through a foggy mountain trail; it’s a drive down a rainy highway. Kevin Morby’s calming voice and fuzzy guitars are your guide, pulling at your wrist and leading you through the winding woods. Every little element in this folk rock album is necessary and executed with perfection. Singing Saw is a drowsy daydream and a cozy cabin cot. Get lost in Singing Saw. When the album ends, don’t treat it like some fleeting memory, flip the record and start it over again. This album demands your attention, and you deserve every peaceful scene it will conjure in your mind. - Russell Finn

Tacocat Lost Time Hardly Art Eight-letter dirty F-word punk band Tacocat's third release is stuffed with beachy tunes of crushed velvet vocals waxing thoughts of TV characters, the female condition, the male agenda and cookie-cutter society. Kaleidoscopic but clean, sweetly sarcastic and honestly nonchalant, Lost Time provides everything missing from the shallow mainstream without taking it too seriously. Opening track "Dana Katherine Scully" is an ode to The X-Files character that discreetly snubs Mulder without even mentioning his name, and "FDP" is a clipped summary of the day in the life of a bleeding female - "worst possible day/ I need you to go away/ red sheets cover the bed/ lightning bolts in my head." "Leisure Bees" and "Night Swimming" address the dichotomy of the American Dream versus actually living, while "The Internet" and "Talk" reject victimization of the information age - "together, together alone/ stay true, true to your phone." And if anyone can roll their eyes through vocals and lyrics, it's Emily Nokes. Just listen to "You Can't Fire Me, I Quit" and "Plan A/ Plan B" - it's The Go-Gos meets Waxahatchee. Lost Time is one of the most solid albums I've heard all year. Rock on
Mock Orange Put the Kid on the Sleepy Horse TopShelf Records When they're not playing to packed venues in Japan, the quartet known as Mock Orange maintain humble lives despite being one of the most successful bands Evansville's ever borne. Evolving both in sound and skill over the past 20-plus years, they play sporadic, sold-out shows locally to a dedicated base while continuously attracting new fans - probably because their music remains relevant, and they put on a damn good show. Put the Kid on the Sleepy Horse is both reminiscent and fresh, with soaring riffs, distortion, and twinkly notes from Asher accompanied by Grace's full bass and Metzger's spread. Grisham's yearning, weaving vocals create a gossamer blanket for a cornucopia of overwhelmingly impressive elements, breaking only occasionally to let listeners remember to breathe. And the fact that there's never a hint of competition along with the tightness of sound shows the band's maturity and camaraderie, a difficult feat with only one member replacement since its inception. "Nine Times" shows their versatility, while tracks like "Window" and "I'm Leaving" prove they haven't lost any grit. "Be Gone" and "Too Good Your Dreams Don't Come True" (favorite, hands-down) are both ethereal and punky. No more spoilers - buy the album and attend the release party at Lamasco June 10th.
Drake Views Young Money Yoni & Geti Testarossa Joyful Noise Recordings The second collaboration of rapper Serengeti (David Cohn) and Yoni Wolf (WHY?) is a storyteller album, utilizing Geti's seemingly innate ability to completely disregard mainstream rap while still embracing the original agenda of the genre and shedding his alter-ego Kenny to tell the bittersweet and colorful love story of a fictional couple affected by a touring musician's lifestyle. Enhanced by Yoni's inventive production and experimental elements and Geti's dark, prolific vocals and socially honest lyrics, Testarossa is anything but boring. Davy and Maddy have a shotgun wedding, short and sweet, but Davy's lust for the limelight takes him on tour despite his band's popularity quickly fizzling. On "Allegheny," the first flames are fanned, with a baby at home while living it up on the road and surfaced guilt expressed through quick rhymes and silky confessions - "I told you once, I told you twice/ honeypie, I'm cold as ice/ gotta catch a flight/ only cuz you're not quite a poltergeist." Trying to fill the void with material things while on the high, the distance escalates on "Madeline," deceitfully sunny until it's not. Their chemistry is unbelievable. A darkly whimsical sequential adventure, one could listen to this album 50 times and hear something new every time.
Drake’s highly anticipated Views was the hip hop album I was most looking forward to all last year. The Canadian rapper teased his fans with If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, What a Time to Be Alive, and “Hotline Bling.” Drake won over new fans when he slew Meek Mill on “Charged Up” and “Back to Back” in one of the best rap beefs in recent memory. Finally, coming way later than initially promised, Drake gives us Views, and it disappoints. The album has some solid songs (“Hotline Bling” is on all releases as a bonus track) and that excellent, sleek production value that is found on nearly everything that accompanies Drake’s smooth voice. However, overall, Views doesn’t stand a chance when compared to his earlier releases. The 20-song album feels monotonous and bloated when trying to listen to it from start to finish. There’s not nearly enough diversity and only a quarter of the songs have featured artists - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but collaborating with some other people (see Beyoncé’s Lemonade review) could have spiced things up a bit. Views isn’t a bad album, it’s just not at all remarkable and not what we’ve come to expect from “Last Name: Ever, First Name: Greatest.” - Russell Finn
Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool XL "I thought you hated Coldplay," a ghost from my past once said when I posted a depressing song that spoke to me at the time. Oh, but wait... we're talking about Radiohead. Years ago, I never would have compared the two, but similarly, I typically only listen to Radiohead when I'm in a special funk, and let's not deny it, kids - some of this album is definitely cry-alone-in-the-dark forgettable until it's necessary. Sometimes grossly beautiful, yes. Iconic? Not really. Don't get me wrong - I grew up on Radiohead, and there are songs that will forever define certain periods of my life, but like your oldest friends, bands will sometimes let you down. "Burn the Witch," for example, has been teased and dragged out for so long and the finished version feels thin despite the orchestral quality, like watered-down Muse or "When I Ruled the World" without Chris Martin's self-indulgence. The message is there, but the application... whatever. With "True Love Waits" and "Identikit" (which is actually decent), it's like they decided "Hey, we have a few songs that we've toyed with - let's finish them, throw in some fluff and crash the internet. They still love us, right?" Yes, Thom, I do. I'm not angry with you, just a little disappointed. - Whitney Patterson
The Cold Stares Dark Dark Blue Self-Released Hardworking Nashville duo The Cold Stares are proof that you don't need a six piece band to sound like one - in a cellophane landscape of pop, EDM, and hip-hop, they're a true rock band. Even a tough battle with cancer couldn't keep front man Chris Tapp from the intense musical magic created when collaborating with fellow musician Brian Mullins, and their fourth release is white-hot. There's no lack of tight riffs, chomping drums, power-vocals or honest lyrics - it's a whole lot of rock packed into just five tracks. From the thundering snarl of "The Great Unknown" to the stuck-in-your-head-for-a-week "Two Keys and a Good Book" to the raw and blues-y "Mountain," it's a neatly-packaged EP that leaves us begging for the next full-length album. Daniel Knight • 3.5 The brewer calls this one a Bavarian style lager. I’ve had a few good German lagers and agree. It pours golden and slightly cloudy and displays a bubbly two finger head that quickly fades away. The brew itself has a light effervescence that stays active (tiny bubbles rising to the top) throughout the drinking session. The nose is grassy with pale malts and light yeast. Likewise, the taste is crisp, light, grassy, and crackery with light malts. There's a bit of spicy bitterness in the aftertaste - kind of funky, but after a few swigs, you get acclimated and can enjoy it. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head forms on this cloudy, golden Bavarian style lager. The scent profile contains a decent balance of malt and hop notes, with the malt smell a bit stronger. The taste contains more of the balanced elements. This lager can serve as an excellent introduction for someone who is new to craft beer and looking for an easy transition. Pair it with a German blue cheese or seafood dishes. Jabez Martinez • 4 I've had the other beers that this brewery makes and I have to admit, I like them better. This one has the classic lager flavor but nothing that really grabs my attention. This and the other offering from this brewery can be located at the Schnuck's on the north side. I had one of the other beers from this brewery at the Hornville Tavern and really enjoyed it. I will try to sample more.
BELL'S OBERON
Daniel Knight • 3.5 Okay, I have to admit that I really like this brewery. That said, I mostly don’t care for wheat ales. You guessed it, it’s one of my favorites. It pours a clearerthan-you’d-expect-for-a-wheat-beer yelloworange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. The aroma is of wheat, grain, and mild spicy hop aromas. The flavor reflects the aroma with wheat, grain and a yeasty bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel of this brew is a little fuller than most wheat ales; probably why I like it more than most. Paul Bragin • 3.5 A thin white head tops a straw-colored wheat beer. Smelling the beer reveals a combination of malt, wheat and hops, with the hops taking a more prominent presence in the end. The taste begins with sweet malt notes in the beginning and a bit of an aftertaste in the finish. This beer seems like a cross between wheat beer and lager. Pair it with seafood, salads or cheeses like goat cheese or Edam. Jabez Martinez • 4 I know there was a lot of hype about Oberon when it first came out, but I think it's just a little better than average. The aroma has light hops and a nice blend of citrus fruits; the flavor is very light and refreshing. I really enjoy the citrus and orange flavors that are balanced well with the bitterness of the hops and wheat. Is it the Holy Grail of beer? Not really, but it's still pretty solid for a wheat ale.
KONA CASTAWAY IPA
Daniel Knight • 3.25 The beer is slightly hazy-amber in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It pours with a one finger white head that dies down quickly, leaving a collar around the edge of the glass, and some lacing down the sides. The nose is of malt, slight citrus, and earthy herbal hop aromas. The taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. The hops are light on the palate for an IPA. It has a relatively low level of carbonation and a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid citrus notes, but it doesn't impress me as much as I hoped it would. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head crowns a cloudy, golden India Pale Ale. Pine scents from the hops fill the nose with the first smell. The hop presence mellows out when first sipping the beer, but returns in the long finish. This might be a good choice for someone who is new to drinking IPAs. Pair it with a Hawaiian treat like pineapple wrapped in bacon to accent the flavors of both the food and the beer. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a hazy, light amber-colored beer. I guess they are also throwing their hat into the IPA club. I like the sweet hops and malt flavors but once again, it's only a little better than average. Kona has put out some other great flavors but this is probably my least favorite.

SOUTHERN TIER HOP SUN
Daniel Knight • 3 The brewers call this one a Summer Wheat Beer. It pours a mostly clear, pale straw color with minimal head. The nose is faint citrus aromas with subtle hops and wheat. The taste is light with a profile that mimics its aroma plus a sparkling, effervescent kind of mouthfeel. I imagine wheat beer fans will really enjoy this one, however, I don’t personally find anything exceptional about it. For what it is, it’s a good one - drinkable and light.
Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head rests on top of this gold-colored wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and never completely disappears. The familiar scents of wheat and a hint of banana find your nose even before bringing the glass close to your face. The first sip contains a brief pause before the wheat flavors form on your tongue and stay for the finish. Pair this summer seasonal with lighter foods like picnic fare. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a clear, amber-colored beer with a clean hops flavor. It's light and refreshing and has everything I want in a summer beer. It coats your mouth and feels like it could be a good beer to sit by the pool with and waste an afternoon.

This cloudy, amber-colored beer pours up a healthy white foam and goes down very smooth...if you like the taste of grapefruit. If that's not your thing, then chances are this Shandy may be a little overwhelming. And even if you do like the taste, you may find yourself stopping after just one or two beers. That's not necessarily a negative. It's just that while the excessive fruitiness makes this a refreshing drink, it's not something you're likely to be ordering or buying in quantity. Perhaps Leinenkugel's was trying to appeal to women with this Shandy, but if that's the case, I'm afraid they missed the mark just a little. Still, for a quick burst of flavor, it's not bad at all. Keith Gander • 2.5 I agree with Rachel on this one - the smell of this Grapefruit Shandy is very noticeable when you first pop the top. It's a nice aroma and there's a good head when you pour the beer into a glass, but the white grapefruit flavor (with a note of fresh-cut citrus) seems a bit overdone. I also notice a bit of an aftertaste. Overall, it's a decent beer but probably not one that I would choose when I'm at a bar or the local liquor store. In short, I prefer a more traditional beer.

Rachel Sievers • 4 Now, this Shandy from Leinenkugel's is more my speed. It pours a cloudy yellow color with a thick foam top - it's very smooth and crisp and doesn't overdo the fruitiness. In fact, I almost wish the lemon flavor had a bit more bitterness. Unlike the Grapefruit Shandy, the Summer Shandy will leave you wanting more. Other Shandys taste more like beer, but this one hides the aftertaste which probably makes it an ideal choice for the average drinker, or even more likely, anyone who doesn't drink that often. The lack of hoppiness also appeals to me and I could definitely see myself ordering this one on occasion. Keith Gander • 4.25 Again, I'm in agreement with Rachel here. This is a perfect summertime beer that goes down very smooth with a refreshing natural lemon flavor. There's decent carbonation and not much of an aftertaste with this one which is a big plus. It pours up a cloudy yellow color with a nice white head and has a very pleasant aroma - very crisp. Normally, I prefer more hoppy beers - IPAs and such - but I think Leinenkugel's has created a very drinkable weiss beer with this Lemon Shandy, perfect for the sunny days ahead.

Ready for a refreshing summer wine? Liquor Locker's resident expert has some seasonal suggestions With all the rain we got last month, it’s really hard work watching your “significant other” cut that jungle that used to be called your yard. So, in that vein here are a few wines that I feel will beat the heat and humidity we are going to be living through for the next few months. My first choice would be Vihno Verde from Portugal. It's inexpensive with bright flavors, a good amount of crisp acidity and a small amount of effervescence that leaves you with a very refreshing, light lemony finish. Most importantly, it can be served really cold! This wine ranges from $6.99 to $15 and comes in both a white and rosé. My favorite is Gazela, from Sogrape. It’s cheap, has great flavor, and if you want, it makes a great base for a Wine Spritzer! Try this: In a tall glass filled with ice, put 1 ½ ounces of Cointreau, fill ¾ from the top with Vihno Verde and top with soda. Garnish with a slice of orange, stir and enjoy! My next choice is from Nahe, Germany. It’s a Blanc de Noir - a white wine from black grapes. It’s Pinot Noir, made as a white wine. The producer is Paul Anheuser, a distant relative of the St. Louis Anheuser family. This wine is a true “patio-pounder," balanced with bright Granny Smith apple notes and a wonderful clean finish. You can drink this as a thirst quencher, or as the wine you serve with a light lunch. It's very versatile and should be in your refrigerator in case you are having that need to knock that steamy, sticky feeling we get in the summer months. It’s around $13 a bottle and really satisfying to beat the heat!
My third choice is Sparkling Wine. There are many different ones out there and they vary in price. In the summer, I usually choose one that is inexpensive, because I want the most bang for the buck! The most popular choices are Spanish Cavas or Italian Proseccos. The grapes used in these wines vary and always deliver on flavor. My new favorite is from South Africa from the Robertson family of wines. It’s their Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. It's a very typical Sauvignon Blanc from the region. Wonderful amounts of minerality make this wine ideal to serve with oysters or shrimp, and with a slight amount of residual sugar, it gives this wine a fruitiness that leaves your palate clean with a hint of lemon and citrus flavors. For those who like doing the “Sunday Brunch” thing on the deck, or in the backyard, try this for a wonderful starter for brunch: Take a can of peaches and chill them overnight in the fridge. Pour the entire can, juice and all into a blender and puree until smooth. Pour an ounce or two into a champagne flute and top with Sparkling wine. If this doesn’t kickstart your brunch, you may be doing something wrong! I really believe this is a “Must Have” wine for summer. It runs about $13 and should fit into anyone's budget.
