NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | EDITOR'S CORNER
A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR W
ell, the love fest is officially over; February is in the rearview mirror and it's on to more pressing matters like drinking green beer and impatiently waiting for the beginning of spring. Of course, it's been an extremely mild winter, free of the white stuff and short on frigid temps. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it ranks in the Top 3 warmest of all time - which is a transparent segue into the theme of this month's News4U: The Tri-State Top 3. Thousands of our readers voted online, putting their two cents in regarding the best bars, restaurants and more, and now we can reveal who made the 'Top3' in each category. Check out the results starting on pg. 44 and see if your picks made the cut (even if you didn't vote, you should still take a look). In other news... March is all about variety. Hairball - The Ultimate Rock & Roll Experience, Michael Londra's Celtic Fire and the "Long Island Medium," Theresa Caputo, are all coming to the Victory Theatre - and

KC'S MARINA POINTE GRAND OPENING Pittsburgh's Radio Tokyo set to kick-off big Cinco de Mayo weekend celebration May 5, 6, & 7
A
very familiar name in the local bar scene is about to expand its brand by taking over a riverfront favorite. Come this May, Marina Pointe, the popular summertime hangout adjacent to Waterworks Road near downtown Evansville, will now be known as KC's Marina Pointe. The move follows Time Out Lounge owner Kerry Chesser's acquisition, renovation and rejuvenation of the Corner Pocket off Fulton Avenue a while back. Now he and GM Chad Brady are looking to work their nightlife magic once again by adapting the same concepts that have made their other two bars such a success: great atmosphere, killer live music courtesy of regional/ national bands and, of course, signature food items and a fairly-priced, varied drink selection. While a number of previous Marina Pointe businesses have come and gone, Chesser has done his homework and plans to be in it for the long haul. "We've seen so many places go out there and fail, so we had to figure out how not to repeat those mistakes - to understand what put the other places out of commission," he says. The first step is to take advantage of the incredible view by putting in a real bar with big screen TVs - similar to the changes that were made at the Corner Pocket - where people can relax and look out over the Ohio River. But hands down, the most important aspect of the KC's
takeover is the entertainment. The plan is to take a play out of the Time Out Lounge live music handbook and then flip the script. "Bands that we have on a Saturday night at Time Out you can't go see them at any other bar in town or anywhere near here," Chesser explains. "At Marina Pointe we'll have the same concept but on Friday night. On Saturday nights we'll go more Southern rock, rock and blues - go for the adult crowd, the mature crowd that really has no place to go right now." With the set-up of Marina Pointe allowing for bigger crowds, the renovations will include the construction of a large stage to accommodate major musical acts on weekends and holidays. Expect the Time Out Lounge's hugely popular annual summer festival, Sudz on Green River, to move out there with the intent to book stars like Poison frontman Bret Michaels, who headlined last year's massive event. Simply put, whether it's live music/DJ on Friday and Saturday nights or karaoke/

jukebox jams during the week, you'll be entertained at Marina Pointe. The public will soon get its first chance to experience the new and improved KC's Marina Pointe at the bar's Grand Opening Weekend, May 5, 6 and 7, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Headlined by Radio Tokyo, an in-demand dance band from Pittsburgh, the three-day bash will also feature a big tribute band on Saturday and live acoustic music throughout Sunday. HAIRBALL - THE BAND Ready, aim, fire!: World-famous tribute act pulls out all the stops for mind-blowing rock & roll experience
"H
airball did not write the book on arena rock, but we're going to read it to you really loud." - Hairball guitarist Happy Technically a tribute act yet so much more, Hairball is on a collision course with Evansville, set to destroy eardrums at the Victory with over two hours worth of heavy music from some of the biggest groups of all time: Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, Aerosmith and many more, complete with a dynamic stage show featuring plenty of lights, smoke, fire, blood, bombs, confetti, spiders, snakes and monsters. And it's all captured on giant video screens for your viewing pleasure. Hairball has been blowing the minds of rock fans across the country and abroad for nearly 20 years, traveling with a rotating cast of singers who embody the spirit - and nail the look and sound - of Diamond Dave, Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Gene Simmons, Steve Perry, Axl Rose, Dee Snider...the list goes on. This is much more than a concert - it's a rock and
roll experience. Hairball guitarist Happy kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the band's tour stop in Evansville. For music fans who grew up in the 70s and 80s, Hairball is the soundtrack of their childhood and high school years - a great time for rock. I think that we bring the spirit of that era - so somebody that may be in their 40s or early 50s, who may have actually gone to one of those concerts back in the day when they were in high school...we're going try and give you that feeling that you had back then and remember and reflect on how big that era was. I think what's really cool about Hairball that I didn't expect is that we often get 10 to 12-year-olds in the audience - this is classic rock to them. A lot of times we're their first concert. And we're just giving them a rapidfire smorgasbord of the greatest rock and roll that's ever been performed. They're all out there singing "Sweet Child O' Mine" and
VICTORY THEATRE MARCH 11 @ 8 P.M.
"Nothin' but a Good Time" - and that's when I know we're doing good work. Do you feel like the magic of that era has been lost in the digital world? You know, people used to socialize faceto-face. You used to be able to look at somebody's face and see how their eyebrows were pointed when they said something; if they were kidding you could tell, because you could see their face - instead of them typing 'LOL' or 'Haha' in a text. There's a certain charm to that 70s/80s era - and we don't ever want to lose that. People should always try to get together under the same roof once in a while and pump their fists and scream the same words together. Are you surprised at all by the staying power of the music from that period - especially since hair metal lends itself to so many Spinal Tap comparisons? Well, we used to be called 'Spoof on the 80s'. Originally, we were kind of making tongueand-cheek fun and the wigs and costumes Cont. on page 10

were not very good. Not that we didn't love the music, but it was more of an adult humor type of silly night at the bar. But it slowly morphed into this more dead-on recreation of the energy and spirit of the era. We started adding pyrotechnics, spending more and more money on our wardrobe. It takes up a third of a semi truck now. There's a whole NASCAR pit crew back there that helps our singers morph into all these different singers. All of this is just the same thing we've been doing since junior high school - dressing up like KISS when our parents took off and cranking up our amps super loud. The only difference now is that I've got a licensed pyro technician and insurance. Before it was done with powder in a coffee can. Looking back, it's amazing that nobody lost an eye. You are faced with playing some of the most iconic guitar riffs in the history of rock each night. Do you find any of the different styles challenging to replicate? I think they all have stylistic things that are kind of unique and certainly Eddie [Van Halen] has patterns that are very him that don't come naturally to me - I really have to work on them. But Van Halen was such a big influence on me and I listened to those records daily. So I know them like the back of my hand. But the truth of the matter is that I really love all of these players - and some of them for different reasons. Has Hairball ever shared the stage with any of the acts featured in the show? We've played with almost everybody that we do in the show. We've done benefit situations with Dee Snider - he's gotten up and sung with us to raise money for Hometown Heroes which is a camp for siblings of fallen soldiers. We've also done Alice Cooper's Christmas Pudding which raises money for his Solid Rock Foundation - a teen arts program which gives troubled teens creative outlets. Also, Vince Neil has gotten up and played with us a couple of times - Gene Simmons and Tom Keifer of Cinderella. After being on stage with these guys to raise money, it made me realize that there's a good reason why we honor these people and pay homage to them. The reason that Hairball is such a big draw and has such staying power is because the founders of the movement really have a personality and an identity. Considering the scope of the Hairball show, it really feels wrong to call you guys a tribute act. Calling Hairball a cover band or a nice tribute band is like calling the Grand Canyon a hole in the ground or Mount Rushmore a nifty roadside attraction. Tribute bands don't blow up the kind of fireworks that we do and come in with a semi truck full of the bells and whistles - which doesn't even include the sound and lights. We're a traveling circus that I feel is delivered with multiple times the impact. Whether it's 50 people or 5000, one of my favorite moments in life is that first song, the opening of the show when everything comes full force. As intense as it is for me to feel my guitar hit my ribs and see the explosions go off, there's an amazing wonder of looking right out and seeing it on somebody's face in the crowd. I know that feeling - and I love sharing it with the fans. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

JOURNEY FORD CENTER | APRIL 1 | 7:30 P.M.
Open arms: Local fans ready to welcome back one of rock's biggest bands
F
ollowing the departure of iconic lead singer Steve Perry in the late 90s, music industry types - and a lot of fans, too - predicted that the road ahead would be a bumpy one for Journey. And while the band deďŹ nitely had its fair share of ups and downs over the next decade, the introduction of new frontman Arnel Pineda in 2007 signaled a dramatic change in fortune. The pint-sized Filipino was plucked from obscurity via YouTube videos demonstrating his I-can't-believe-it's-not-Steve-Perry vocals - a story made for Hollywood (indeed, a documentary was produced capturing Pineda's impossible rise to stardom); his charisma and passion for the music quickly translating into sold-out arenas all over the world. Truly, it could be argued that Journey is more popular now than ever in terms of international appeal. The band packed the house at the Ford Center a few years back, and another huge crowd is expected on April 1 as the guys return to rock out a career's worth of hits: "Don't Stop Believin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Open Arms," Separate Ways," "Who's Crying Now" and many more, plus a sprinkling of new material recorded since the acquisition of Pineda. Incredibly, Journey has been touring since 1973 and still features two original members - guitarist/founder Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valory. Along with Pineda, the 2017 touring lineup is rounded out by longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain and the return of virtuoso drummer Steve Smith who last performed with the group in 1998.

THERESA CAPUTO LIVE! THE EXPERIENCE VICT O RY T HEAT R E | M AR C H 2 6 | 7 : 3 0 P. M .
T
heresa Caputo is the first one to admit that what she does is crazy. Well known as the "Long Island Medium" - also the title of her very successful show on TLC - the entertainingly dramatic, warm-hearted New Yorker has been communicating with the dead for decades. And literally changing lives. Guided by "Spirit," as she calls her, Caputo gives readings, and ultimately closure, to people who have lost loved ones, connecting the physical world with the spiritual realm. Through this "amazing gift from God," she has healed many, many souls, a journey that has inspired several books, including her latest, Good Grief, out March 14. Caputo returns to Evansville for another life-changing show on the heels of the new season of Long Island Medium, which debuted on February 19. How do you go about deciding which client stories to include in your books? You know, it's interesting. When I sit and talk with "her," what I like to call the "spirit writer" not the "ghost writer" - it's amazing how I get brought back to certain readings. It's almost like I'm channeling when I'm writing my books as well. For instance, I got a flash of an old client from Ohio whose son died on the subway tracks when he was in New York. They came and had an experience on Long Island Medium and they come to all my shows whenever I'm in the area. I get to see them and we talk about him - it's like, 'Oh my god,
I would love to share your story for my book.' So that's how it happens. While Long Island Medium certainly has its serious moments, it's really like a sitcom at times. Listen, of course it is. That's the thing - I'm just who I am, and I don't know anything different. That's why the show is so successful and why people like it - because it's real. What's funny is that I'm still friends with a lot of my childhood friends and I still see them. One of them in particular, Darren, is a pilot and he meets so many people. He's like, 'You have no idea how many people ask if I know you when they find out where I'm from.' And they're always like, 'There's no way she's like that.' And he always says, 'You know what, you're right. She's even more dramatic.' [laughs] Is there any different preparation for readings at your live shows as opposed to your TLC show? There isn't. The only difference is that it's not being recorded. My show is not scripted. The way you'll see me when I walk into the Victory on March 26 will be just like how I

walk into any reading. I treat all of them the same. Whether I'm doing a private reading or a group of 20 people or 5000, I can only channel so many souls in a certain period of time. It's the same preparation. I find that in large groups, Spirit is more fun and more playful because we have a lot of things that we have to cover. Look, these are a lot of heavy messages that we hear and that's what I find on tour - that there are a lot of tragedies. People don't realize it, and you need levity for that. And Spirit does a phenomenal job. For the live show, I come out on stage and do a quick speech and then Spirit just guides me around the theatre. I'm not on the stage - I'm down in the crowd in front of people just as if we were all sitting in a living room. I walk right up to you - I stop and talk to whoever I need to speak to. Sometimes I spend a lot of time in the back of the theatre or up in the balcony - it's not just people in the front rows. I have no idea what's going to happen - just like on Long Island Medium.

MICHAEL LONDRA'S CELTIC FIRE VICT O RY T HEAT R E | M AR C H 2 3 | 7 P. M.
World-renowned Irish tenor talks Broadway beginnings, loosening up, "Danny Boy" and more
A
t the relatively late age of 31, Michael Londra landed his first professional singing gig following a career in behavior therapy. Subsequently "discovered," the Irish tenor with the angelic voice was duly cast in a touring company of Riverdance; a Broadway version soon followed as did a growing fanbase all over the world. Solo albums, including the seasonal smash, Beyond the Star, have been met with critical acclaim and Londra has continued to take center stage in hugely popular productions such as Beyond Celtic which aired on PBS and was released as a companion DVD. Londra will perform in Indiana for the first time in a decade when his latest production, Celtic Fire, arrives at the Victory on March 23. He kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the show. What was your vision for Celtic Fire? Doing Riverdance kind of gave me access to the best traditional musicians and the best Irish dancers. I wanted to put together a show that wasn't strictly me all night - more a variety show that highlighted really traditional Irish arts. When you're in Riverdance it's a monster - it's fantastic. Being the lead singer of a Broadway show is a very cool thing - I
totally realize that. But I wanted to carve out something that was a little bit simpler and a little looser. I kind of like to change direction during the course of a show. PBS certainly won't be interested in this one it's a little bit more raucous, a lot livelier and a lot more fun. There's a lot more of me talking and chatting and, uh, trying to be funny [laughs]. Interestingly, though you made your mark in Riverdance, you cannot dance at all. How dare you...[laughs]. No, it goes down in the annals of history that I cannot dance. I mean, I have the notions of being a dancer - I am a dancer on the inside. But I'm trapped in the body of something that doesn't. It's funny because Irish people notoriously... for people that have a lot of soul - and we do we certainly beat on the one and the three instead of the two and the four. Seasonal songs - wintery songs in particular seem tailor made for your voice. Natural fit. You're spot on. My voice is very "of a type" and so there's a lot of stuff that I can't sing; an Irish tenor is kind of restricted. Certainly, carols - and that kind of "In the Bleak Mid Winter" kind of feel - is very akin to what I connect with. I love them, so they
certainly are a good fit for me. As an Irish tenor, I have to be careful what I choose to sing. You know, this year I'm becoming an American citizen, and so I wanted to do an American album. So this year I'm doing a jazz standards album because I love it - I love that Nelson Riddle kind of sound. And also because my voice is perfect for it. You covered "Danny Boy" in 2013 on Songs of Ireland. It's practically the Irish national anthem - how did you approach the recording? It's a monster of a song - and it's been murdered by many, many artists. It was actually my mother who suggested that I record it - and I was like, 'not over my dead body.' But she kind of strong-armed me. The goal was to make it as simple as possible. We actually recorded it in one hour. And it became my calling card - it still is. I have to sing it at every show - but I actually love singing it. Sometimes people get emotional and I can actually hear the sobbing - you should imagine what it's like when I'm hitting that top note and I can hear that in the audience.

EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS:
PROJECT TRIO & TCHAIKOVSKY VICTORY T HEAT R E | M AR C H 1 8 | 7 P. M.
Brooklyn's high-octane ensemble returning to shake up the sound of classical music again
W
onderfully eclectic, endlessly energetic, wholly passionate just a few ways to describe the magic of PROJECT Trio. Formed over a decade ago with the intention of bringing a spark back to classical music through innovative videos and fresh, exciting live performances, the New York-based ensemble has gained a legion of supporters from all corners of the world, racking up millions of YouTube views along the way. Double bassist Peter Seymour, beatboxing flutist Greg Pattillo and cellist Eric Stephenson return to the Victory March 18 - the long-awaited follow-up to their 2014 collaboration with the Orchestra. The guys will perform Scatter, a commissioned piece by young American rising star Adam Schoenberg plus several original works (they'll also team up off-hours with the EPO for six educational concerts with local kids). Rounding out the evening, the Orchestra will take on Tchaikovsky's Coronation March and Suite No. 3 in G. Stephenson kindly spoke with News4U about the PROJECT Trio Evansville encore. There's a lot of anticipation regarding Scatter. What did you think when you first heard the commissioned piece? The first thing was picking up the unique intricacies of the piece. When we first flipped through the pages, there was a middle section in the very strange
time signature of 11/16. Furthermore, there's an element of improvisation to that meter. So that already seemed to be something that was going to present a challenge. Speaking of improvisation, the whole opening is also improvised between the cello and the bass. And there's elements of electronics and technology going on which is also unique to Scatter. Even though it doesn't sound like computer sounds, it's very tonal and beautiful. There's harmonic improvisation going on between the cello and bass which is really cool, because it's going to be different every time we play it. The audiences so far have eaten it up. You've chosen an older PROJECT Trio piece, "Bodega," for your encore. What makes it work as a final musical statement? Actually, it's a really great piece not only to end on because it's very high energy, but it also features another one of our kind of multi-genre bending aspects where we take on Latin music. You would actually find a flute and probably a bass in a lot of Latin bands, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a cello in one. For us to join and pair with the Orchestra highlights the percussion section which is very much an element of Latin music. I know we're going to be playing it for the students, too, so it's an opportunity to show what the percussion element of an orchestra is capable of - and then of course we just bring our own excitement.

You'll also play "Djangish," the Trio's ode of sorts to legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Yes, we're celebrating the style of Django Reinhardt - and [French jazz violinist] Stephane Grappelli. But we're not playing the traditional instruments associated with it - and we're adding the element of the rhythm. When I originally wrote that song, I was playing the guitar - which I love to play. And if you play the guitar, you're inevitably going to find yourself listening to or studying the music of Django Reinhardt and the way he plays. But then if you take a lot of those concepts and apply it your own instrument - which for me is the cello - and start experimenting with those chords and the rhythm and then just add the melody to it, you really get a style that sounds bigger than the sum of the parts. Thanks to the internet, PROJECT Trio has widespread international support and you've toured overseas. Where would you like to go next? Probably the place that we most want to go is South America - Brazil or Cuba, anywhere Latin. Africa as well. We just speak the language of music. It's always interesting and unique when we travel abroad and meet the "us" of that place - sit down with them and play some music, eat some food. Often we can't even communicate with words, but we can always communicate with passion and music.

But like every operation of its kind, ACA needs the support of the community to keep making a difference, and the annual Paws for a Cause benefit has proven to be a successful fundraiser that facilitates the amazing work of everyone involved. This year's Paws for a Cause Big Show Extravaganza will take place at Tropicana Evansville on Saturday, March 11. Featuring pet fashions by Coco & Tucker Pets, the "Haute Dogs & Kitty Couture" Fashion Show promises to be the highlight of the evening as adopted and foster ACA animals strut their stuff to the delight of the crowd. Live music will be provided by Allen Tate & Chuck Gee, Rapture and Tony Henning with a delicious dinner served and a cash bar offered. Plus, you will not want to miss the items featured in the ACA auction! Attire: Casual and pet friendly. ACA logo t-shirts are encouraged and/or purple clothing. Don’t have an ACA shirt? There will be plenty for sale!
The event runs from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit acaevansville.com. Tropicana Evansville is located at 421 NW Riverside Dr.

RIVER CITY EAGLES
1824 W. FRANKLIN ST. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-422-2956
T
here aren't many places in Evansville that offer as much as the River City Eagles. A private organization, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles was founded in 1898 and locations can be found across the United States. Although membership is required to enjoy full benefits, the first is free to veterans, firefighters, EMTs, and police officers. Otherwise, the club is open to the public four times a month, including $2 pizza day, which is every third Saturday (no carryout), and all ages are welcome. They host pool/ dart league/ tournaments for adults and youth, and have a variety of gaming options, such as Poppin' Crazy Stars, pull tabs, and a weekly Treasure Chest drawing (Friday at 7:30). Private room rental is available at a low rate of $75 for members, and $100 for non-members, with a $50 refundable cleaning deposit. The menu is available daily, including house-made pizza, mozzarella sticks, hot dogs, burgers, tamales, egg rolls, Bosco sticks, nachos, jalapeno poppers, soft pretzels, chicken tenders, and a variety of chips, candy bars, and soft drinks. A full service bar is for purchase by Aerie and Auxiliary members. Entertainment and snacks are just a portion of what helps fuel the nonprofit, because "people helping people" aptly describes the ultimate mission of the F.O.E. Locally, they give to charities such as Riley's Children's Hospital, and are often first in line to fundraise for those in need. If you know anyone who belongs, or wants to stop in and find out more about what they're about, just ring the bell. You may end up joining an organization that has formed camaraderie through charity for over a century. - Whitney Patterson

OLD TYME
DELI
& MEAT SHOP A
fter growing tired of the competition within the grocery business, Mike Holder opened Old Tyme Deli & Meat Shop on First Avenue 12 years ago with the intention of scaling back to the basics - fresh, quality cuts of meat, sandwiches, lunch plate specials, deli side staples, and a few tables. Holder's direct attitude, playful sense of humor, and the no-frills environment of the shop are a few of
307 N. FIRST AVENUE | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-401-1030 the many reasons his business continues to thrive. Besides the shop, they also offer catering for events and businesses big and small. But of course, the main draw is the food. The plate lunch specials are a hot ticket, so it's better to be an early worm. Daily from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., they have rotating hearty, housemade items, ranging from Salisbury steak to lasagna, thick pork chops to BBQ chicken. The price is right as well ($5.49-$7.49), and patrons can expect the same special every day of the week. I visited on a Wednesday, so I got the country fried steak, battered fresh with white gravy, fluffy mashed potatoes, and green beans with ham chunks. It was enough to feed two people, but that didn't stop me from ordering a cheeseburger as well - the sizzle of the flat-top
was simply too tempting. And my decision was absolutely worth it; the juicy patty and melted cheddar cheese paired perfectly with BBQ Grippos and a Ski. Holder dished out delicious food and good-natured grief before sending me packing with two containers of their beef noodles for dinner. Next visit: meatloaf Monday. Despite the classic deli vibe, Holder's employees keep the shop technologically up to date, even hosting an Instagram account (oldtymedeli) chock-full of mouthwatering photos. For a full list of their daily lunch specials, visit their Facebook page, and for catering, call the store or visit the website. And don't take Mike too seriously - he just wants you to hurry up and order so he can hurry up and feed you. - Whitney Patterson
Hours: Mon-Fri 8 a.m.- 6 p.m./ Sat 8:30 a.m.- 3 p.m./ Closed Sun. Now accepting credit cards. For more info, visit oldtymedeli.com.

ROD AUSTIN Cranial burn: Calhoun wood craftsman turns obsessive thinking into art
S
omewhere around six years ago, people started referring to Rod Austin as an "artist," but for some reason, the term just didn't click with the 49-year-old. "I was like, 'Really? - I'm just a guy who works with wood,'" he says, seemingly still a bit perplexed by the label. But in time Austin would come to accept the fact that his expertise and craftsmanship - and especially his creativity - qualified him as such. In the beginning, however, woodworking was simply a family trade passed down through the years, a skill that Austin learned from his father - who learned from his father. "I was raised around all aspects of carpentry," he explains. "My dad would hire me and I'd work for money for him when I was a kid, but the pay didn't start to get serious until I was 13. He asked me to dedicate myself to the family business - which seemed very normal at the time." Austin's childhood apprenticeship
served to build a foundation for everything that he would achieve - and continues to achieve - as an adult. Like his father, he has specialized in the residential side of carpentry to earn a living - hardwood floors and trim work mainly, but also a lot of stairways. Over the years, in fact, his handiwork has been featured in Parade of Homes and Evansville Living as well as local newspapers. Off hours, however, he's made a habit of spending countless hours on various creative projects - crafting beautiful wood chairs and tables, for example; even electric guitars. Maybe Austin wasn't convinced of his place in the local arts community initially, but people like Shelly Norris, a "pivotal
influence schooled in California art" certainly were. "She saw my work and was amazed - she took interest, encouraged me and got me into juried shows," he says. In fact, in 2012, Austin took home top prize in 3-D art at the Evansville Museum; he repeated the feat the following year and almost made it a hat-trick the year after that, coming in second. His impressive run finally came to end in 2015 thanks to an unexpected bug infestation in the wood he used for a masterfully handcrafted bench. Post-juried show success, Austin turned his talents to what he calls "wall hanging art," the manifestation of "a huge shift towards my identity of making pieces about what I'm thinking." This newfound sense of direction was first noted around

"Austin's motivation to explore life is contagious." 2009, but recent pieces like "Cranial Burn," which resulted from a friend's description of Austin's artistic process, really detail his psychological catharsis. Another minimasterpiece entitled "Speedball" represents the frustration of facing life alone after getting divorced from his wife of many years. Call it a clearing of the cobwebs. "I get into these thought processes - really get obsessed about them," Austin explains. "I start thinking about how to apply the obsessive thinking to something I can make." As for what's on the horizon, Austin has two different projects in mind for 2017. First, he'd like to head out west on a motorcycle and stay for a month or more - really experience life outside of the Midwest where he's spent most every day of his life. "I want to see the giant sequoia trees - that would blow my mind," Austin says. His second project involves building a hotrod. A fan of old cars, he's owned several classic models over time, including a '65 Chevelle which he maintained for 20 years. "I'd like to put together a little roadster that's not like these high dollar kit cars," he says. "I want something affordable where I can make the doors, body - everything - using my wood and metal crafting skills." Austin's motivation to explore life is contagious. He even sits in as a drummer with local bands on occasion and enjoys writing - poetry, mostly - to capture his thought process in words. Considering the scope of his creativity and all that he's accomplished, it's good to know that he now fully accepts his place in the local arts community. "I do think I'm an artist, because it's hard for me to conform to whatever everyone else wants to do. Plus, when I work on a project, I really put everything into it. I don't care how long it takes or how much money." For more info, follow Rod Austin on Facebook.

IBMM
(INTERNATIONAL BLUEGRASS MUSIC MUSEUM)
Spring 2017 Benefit Concert Series Fantastic lineup of nationally-known bluegrass bands on tap for March
T
he long-awaited International Bluegrass Music Museum Spring 2017 Benefit Concert Series got off to a roaring start last month with an energetic opening show by Lexington’s The Wooks. Steeped in Kentucky bluegrass and mountain music, the band is set to make its ROMP debut in June – a welcome addition to the region’s biggest summer event. But the electrifying performance by The Wooks was just the beginning of another outstanding concert series presented in an effort to preserve and honor the legacy of bluegrass music. In fact, March will see three nationally-known acts take the IBMM stage. A duo comprising two of the most respected bluegrass musicians around, Compton & Newberry (3/2) are considered masters of the old-time mandolin and banjo/guitar. Their sound is uncluttered, relying on honesty in the music rather than a cascade of notes. Formed in 2014, High Fidelity (3/17) hail from Nashville and draw much of their inspiration from legends like Don Reno & Red Smiley, The Stanley Brothers, The Louvin Brothers and Jim & Jesse – with a focus on sharing the old-time music with a younger generation. The band may be relatively new, but they’ve already received much recognition, including first place in the International Band Championship at the 40th Annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America.

KENTUCKY FRIED PICKIN' HOLIDAY INN RIVERFRONT | MARCH 17 & 18
Inaugural two-day bluegrass jam bringing together talent from across the country
T
he end of winter is always worth celebrating, and this year a brand new Owensboro musical event is set to make its debut and help usher in the warmer days ahead. Cleverly-named and guaranteed to rock, the inaugural Kentucky Fried Pickin' Bluegrass Jam will feature some of the best players from around the region - and from states as far away as Georgia and Arizona (the list keeps growing). In other words, get ready for an amazing gathering of talent. The FREE two-day event has been creating a serious buzz, requiring more space at the hotel than initially anticipated with its promise of non-stop bluegrass jamming. A few booths will also be set up, including a vinyl record vendor for the old school music fans out there. Additionally, the location of Kentucky Fried Pickin' is ideal. Just blocks from the International Bluegrass Music Museum and only 30 minutes from the birth place of the father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, the venue sits right in the middle of the action with free trolley rides to downtown Owensboro. Don't miss this fantastic first-time event - the bluegrass jam of the year. Pickers of all levels and spectators of all ages are welcome to attend!
Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass (3/23) go straight for the bluegrass jugular, serving up powerful, traditional music that eschews the genre-bending of many contemporary acts. But it’s the vocals that really make this group stand out. Indeed, bluegrass stars such as Alison Krauss consider Paisley to be one of the finest singers out there. For tickets and more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION by Robert Howard
Henderson-based author hoping to cut through the media blitz with collection of short stories
I
t's tough to be heard these days, what with the daily avalanche of media that's bearing down on us all. Authors, in particular, are struggling to compete with the technology that seems to have a stranglehold on the public's attention span. Translation: few people are sitting down with a good book these days. But Henderson's Robert Howard still holds out hope that the power of the written word can cut through the noise. To that end, Howard spent five years working exclusively on a collection of short stories unburdened by "tidy" conclusions. Ultimately, he wanted the reader to "make connections and have a vision of the story in their own mind," to see the world through an array of characters, ranging from artists to criminals to a saintly woman. It all resulted in Photo of Robert Howard Internal Combustion, published on Amazon Kindle last summer. Predictably, the release got a little lost in the shuffle , but Howard is looking to give the impressive collection (a couple of the stories won prizes from the Henderson Community College literary magazine) a second life. Still, he's moving forward with various projects, including more stories and a novel about a political consultant that Howard describes as being "similar to a young James Carville." There are also script ideas floating about as well as his continued interest in shooting a nobudget indie film. In other words, as Howard notes, "there's a lot to get done." To purchase Internal Combustion, visit amazon.com/author/howardr.

WHAT'S NEW AT ELLIS PARK
2017 shaping up to be a big year at the region's favorite thoroughbred racetrack
W
ith live racing on the horizon and all kinds of exciting developments taking place, Ellis Park is the place to be for entertainment all year long. Indeed, there's a real buzz in the air at the Henderson track as everyone is gearing up for big things to come - and enjoying the new additions already in place, including the Upgraded Historical Horse Racing machines with bigger jackpots. Under the previous agreement, jackpots were shared with other tracks in Kentucky, but now they are all kept in-house. That translates to local money going back to local winners! Coming off the 2016 summer racing season that saw the biggest daily purse amounts in Ellis Park history, the track looks to repeat that beginning July 1 when the horses line up for the ďŹ rst time this year. The schedule is set to run through Labor Day with live racing every Friday, Saturday, Sunday (each weekend will have a theme) and on holidays. In other exciting news, the Weiner Dog Races are back as well as Camel and Ostrich Racing - a great time for the whole family. In fact, as Ellis Park inches ever closer to its 100th anniversary in 2022, more and more parents are bringing their kids to the track, passing down a truly fun tradition. Keep in mind that live racing and the Historical Horse Racing machines help support the Evansville and Henderson economies, attracting race fans and gamers from all over the region. Come join in the celebration at Ellis Park! Ellis Park is located at 3300 US-41 in Henderson. For more info, visit ellisparkracing.com.

FREE REIGN 2 That's what (old) friends are for: Close-knit cover band carries the torch for classic-era tunes
T
he intriguing story of Free Reign 2 stretches back nearly 50 years - yes, that's 5-0. Initially led by founder and singer Neil Long, the band - then called The Corvettes - regularly churned out the sounds of the 60s in front of big crowds at places like Lamey's in Haubstadt, but as the decade turned, he broke off to form what became Free Reign (mark 1) and began covering the chart toppers of the day, including Chicago and Three Dog Night. He'd found his musical niche - which, for the most part, would remain the blueprint for years to come, keeping a thread between the many incarnations of the group. But for all intents and purposes, the story of Free Reign 2 really takes shape in 1977. That's when Posey County's Kenny Kraft signed on as drummer. He was followed a year later by the addition of Yankeetown keyboardist Bill Ball. And while the two longtime friends would take periodic breaks to recharge over the next four decades, they ultimately remained the driving force behind the continued existence of the band, particularly after the sad passing of Long seven years ago. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
62 |
The 80s arrived, bringing a newfound - and over the top sense of style. The times they were a-changin', all right. Feeling burned out, Long departed Free Reign; but he wasn't the only casualty. "We found another lead singer, but then Kenny also dropped out to take a breather," Ball explains. "I hung in there and we kept doing danceable 70s stuff." Eventually, both Long and Kraft returned to the fold, but by the late 90s, the band had seemingly run its course; everyone was tired of the grind. In the mid 2000s, however, the guys all caught the performance bug again and reformed to play a handful of high profile gigs. Enthusiasm was high and Free Reign kept the music that they loved alive for several more years until Long's passing. "Neil was good looking, a good singer and real personable - a real talent," Kraft says. "So then we said we're done for good." But in fact, the story doesn't end there. Cut to 18 months ago. Ball and Kraft got to talking about the old days and decided to resurrect Free Reign - again. And for good reason. "Right now there's a need for us," Kraft explains. "People are starving for the music we're playing. Most of the other bands are playing new country or newer music." Still, they needed to find a couple more like-minded musicians in tune with a 60s/70s vibe - but who could also roll with a modern punch at times. Enter bassist/ singer Tim Rector and guitarist/singer David

Picture o Free Reign b f ack in 1978 Underwood. The former, a close friend of Ball's, has played with a litany of groups around the country and overseas; the latter is a bit of a rock star up in Huntingburg, having released original music and garnered radio support there. Reformed and rejuvenated, Free Reign 2 (the second coming, of sorts) debuted at St. Philip Catholic Church on January 23, 2016 - Ball's birthday, appropriately enough. It was a fundraiser with a big party and lots of dancing - "a lot of fun." Other noteworthy shows since then have included a huge outdoor event at Weinzapfel's Tavern and Herbstfest in Huntingburg. Most recently, the guys played River Bend on Franklin Street - a Valentine's dance that pulled in a record crowd. With four very capable singers in the band now, their set list covers a wide swath of material, from "Unchained Melody" to "Uptown Funk" - nearly 60 songs all total with more additions to come. While Free Reign 2 carries the torch for 60s/70s music, their stage set-up is technologically up-to-date with a sweet digital soundboard that allows for a lot of flexibility. The band plans to keep rocking the classics for the foreseeable future and is booking more 2017 dates, including a return to Weinzapfel's in June. "It just doesn't get any better than this," Rector says. "These are the best guys I've ever played with - we make great music together, and they're my best friends in the world." THE BLUES WITH BRAGIN
FEATURED RELEASE: The Rolling Stones / Blue and Lonesome
Legendary rock band returns with on-point album of classic blues covers
T
he first Stones studio release in over a decade, Blue and Lonesome sees the group going (way) back to its roots, paying homage to the artists that shaped its sound. “Commit a Crime” by Howlin’ Wolf features Keith Richards playing a solid guitar line throughout the song. Mick Jagger’s vocals provide a nice balance and his harmonica playing at the end of the song rounds out the track nicely. “Blue and Lonesome” by legendary harmonica player Little Walter allows Richards to show off his guitar skills with a style reminiscent of early work by The Black Keys. “I Gotta Go” by Little Walter starts with an energetic harmonica from Jagger and returns forcefully after each verse. “Everybody Knows About My Good Thing” features slide guitar work from Eric Clapton and serves as a nice complement to Jagger’s soulful vocal performance. “Ride ‘Em On Down” by Eddie Taylor sounds like something that would fit in at a dance in the 1950s, with Jagger’s harmonica at the end providing a nice cap. The harmonica picks up again immediately at the beginning of “Hate to See You Go” by Little Walter. The album ends with two Willie Dixon covers: “Just Like I Treat You” and “I Can’t Quit You Baby." The former is an up-tempo rocking tune that showcases a dirty vocal sound and harmonica from Jagger. The latter sees Eric Clapton returning to play lead guitar. Anyone who loves classic rock or blues should listen to this album. - Paul Bragin, WUEV Blues Producer A Case of the Blues airs on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on 91.5-FM WUEV and online at wuev.org.

NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | LOCAL WRITER
THE INTERIM RESEARCH TEAM FOR INTERGALACTIC SPACE TRAVEL By John Thurgood
W
e had never planned to leave Earth, but then we found a planet. It was in 75301 quadrant, and it shared nearly every characteristic with Earth. It even circled a yellow dwarf, and hosted a single moon. We began thinking about the possibilities. With a brand new planet, we could start over. We could utilize all the knowledge we had now, but at a time when it would have a real effect. We could focus on solar and wind energy. Farming would be completely organic. And just think about all the hiking. The problem, however, lay in its position in the universe. Its distance was most unfortunate - it was really far away - but not only that, the trajectory with which we would need to get there was incredibly convoluted. In all, it would take a shuttle six generations to arrive. We began planning immediately. We thought about the shuttle we would need to get there. It would have a rotating gravitational system that was self-propelled. Each cabin would have an observation deck and a fully loaded digital library. All the food would be grown in organic beds under pure UV, and we would store a full ecosphere of seed and animal specimen for planting and raising. We could even fill the recreational room with treadmills that had digital displays capable of recreating some of the most exceptional hiking known to man. Amidst all this planning, however, we eventually reached a second problem. Once we took into consideration the time we would need to allocate funding, plan and implement its design, as well as organize a strategy for intergalactic space travel, we realized the time it would take to get a shuttle readied for launch would be nearly thirty years. Then fate intervened. We found a location to form a center of operations in Western Oregon, near Eugene. The area met all of our needs geographically and politically. The state senate had recently passed a bill allotting certain tax breaks for investments in astronautical advancements, as well as development into solar and wind energy. We were able to design our headquarters with a LEED Platinum certification. The surrounding property was plotted for farming, and we were able to get proper licensing to raise and slaughter livestock. All of it would be steroid and pesticide free, of course. The best part was all the hiking! We didn't know what we were getting into when we started this journey, but space travel was indeed turning out to be everything we had dreamed it could be.

NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | COMMUNITY & FAMILY
SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY
Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.
APPLEJACK: This little firecracker is Applejack! He’s a male puppy who’s about 3 months old. He’s pretty cute, so you’re probably thinking – what’s his breed? Well, we can tell you with 100% accuracy because he’s had a DNA test! He is a German Shepherd-Viszla mix! Applejack spent time in a foster home recovering from mange (hence the patchy hair in his picture) with larger dogs, kids, and cats. He played well and listened to the older dogs, but he’ll do best in a home without small children or cats, please. He’s a very dominant little tyke. So dominant that the VHS is recommending that his adopters enroll him in socialization classes prior to taking him home, so he can be set up for success and grow up to be the best dog possible. His $120 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, first vaccines, and more! CHLOE: We all get a little plumper after the holidays… and Chloe’s no different. She’s seeking an indoor forever home that can help her work on her summer bikini body! And by “bikini body,” she means, “sunbathing in a sunny patch of the living room all day.” Chloe happens to be about 13 years young, but cats can live to be 20+ sometimes! She is not “old” by any means, and her age doesn’t make her any less deserving of a home than all the kittens that fly out the doors every day. Chloe is already spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, FeLV/FIV negative, and ready to go home TODAY for only $30.
ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT KEN & CALLIE
Clarksville, TN resident Ken Mulkey is a great friend to animals. Over the years, he and his wife have rescued several dogs, including a Lab/Chow mix, a Retriever mix and a Poodle/Cocker Spaniel mix. The latter, a cute little girl named Charlie, sadly passed away last August from adrenal cancer at the age of 11. The loss was particularly tough to take for Ken because she loved to cuddle with him on the couch and also slept in the bed at night. Thankfully, the two boys are still doing well, but Ken really wanted to find another small, loving dog like Charlie. The search was on. A couple months ago he hopped onto Petfinder.com and up popped Callie, an adorable Miniature Poodle located at the VHS. "Every time I saw that face, I really liked it - I thought she looked like a dog that would sit and watch TV with me," Ken says. After getting approval for the adoption, he drove up to Evansville with his big dog Bear in tow to make sure that it would tolerate Callie. The two did just fine together, and then they all headed back to Tennessee. "Callie has been a great addition to the family," Ken says. "She really loves her freedom at the house and loves to run outside in our big, fenced-in backyard." Most importantly, Callie really enjoys hanging out on the couch and sleeping in the bed at night. Talk about a successful adoption!
PHILLIP: Phillip is a very lucky rabbit whose four very lucky rabbit feet served him well around Christmastime last year. He was hopping around the parking lot of an Evansville apartment complex (most likely dumped out in the cold) and never reclaimed. He’s been waiting on a home ever since, and he’s looking forward to spending his days sharing veggies with someone who will keep him inside for the next 8+ years of his life! He’s a neutered male American mix, with just one noticeable little patch of Lionhead mohawk on his forehead. Phillip’s $30 adoption fee includes a cardboard carrier to get him home safely!

NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | RELIGION
NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | LOCAL OPINION
THE WRITE STUFF
ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church
with Jonathan Gluff
Q:
Masters of Escaping Reality
IS THERE ONE, TRUE RELIGION?
For as long as there has been religion, there has been an argument over whose is true and whose isn’t. Wars have been fought over the question. Families have been destroyed over the question. More blood has been shed and more damage done over that single question than, perhaps, any other. At the heart of every religion is the search for God. Every religious tradition seems to be on a quest to know who God is and how we can relate to God and to one another. However, the quest for God – a God who is bigger than our ability to understand – is limited by its very nature. The finite cannot fully understand or comprehend or experience the infinite. So, no religion can ever claim to have 100% of the truth. This is one of the reasons why conversation between religious traditions is so critically important. The insights I gain from my friends in religious traditions beyond my own, offer reinforcement and insight to my own practice of faith. The prayers of other traditions lead me to pray in new ways. That does not mean I am not a Christian. I am and will always be. But as I open my heart and mind to dear people of other traditions, I find an amazing amount of common ground and I gain added understanding that enhances what I believe and how I live. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

(or "50 Shades of Meh")
It’s safe to say I’ve been accused of having strong opinions. It’s also safe to say that sarcasm isn’t always clearly conveyed via text. I used to - and, unfortunately, still occasionally do - judge people pretty harshly for liking poorly written garbage like 50 Shades of Grey and its sequels. I say “unfortunately” because I’ve consciously tried to be a little less of a condescending jerk (that’s the PG version) in recent years. Strangely enough, that dumpster fire masquerading as a novel (see? I sometimes still can’t help myself) partially helped start me down this path. A few years ago, I discovered someone I greatly respected was a fan of the series. Normally, I would’ve written it off as a momentary lapse in otherwise fairly sound judgment. But I took a step back, looked at all the events occurring in this person’s life, and felt ashamed as I realized I’d never considered that for many people it offered an escape from reality. If you remember waaaaaaay back to 2011, this was talked about quite a bit back then. I personally recall seeing many articles and blogs referring to it as “granny porn” or insinuating that it was tailored to bored Midwestern

housewives. Sure, I’m inclined to say there may be a ring of truth to those accusations. But when looked at objectively, what really makes it all that different from, say, watching a UFC fight? I’m not any more likely to pull off a successful triangle hold on someone than those aforementioned housewives are to land a sugar daddy with a helicopter and a penchant for light bondage, but I still don’t mind occasionally watching people beat each other senseless. No matter what we tell ourselves, we all search for ways to escape our reality. Whether it be through sports, video games, music, books, or movies, escapism by any other name is still escapism. That’s not even to say it’s necessarily a bad thing; sometimes, a distraction is perfect to give your mind a break. We can’t perpetually be all doom and gloom, no matter how much the world around us wants us to be. I know this isn’t exactly revelatory to many people, nor am I deluding myself into thinking otherwise. Yet it does perfectly highlight how we all could stand to truly put ourselves in someone else’s shoes - or furry handcuffs. But I still really, really hate those books.

WORDS FROM WHITNEY
TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox
DEMOCRATIC COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE BEEN AN EMBARRASSMENT
How about immigration reform rather than a wall and travel bans?
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." Unless, of course, they practice a religion we don't agree with, or they have failed to secure proper legal documents through a flawed and complex system. Despite the fact that this country was founded on the backs of immigrants after being taken from indigenous peoples by force, our current administration is adamant on keeping out "terrorists" and "illegals" on the taxpayers' dollar, even turning a blind eye to refugees seeking a safe haven. Correct me if I'm wrong, but just because a small percentage of folks that happen to belong to a certain demographic are "bad guys," that doesn't mean that the entire demographic should have to pay for it. A lot of the same people who would use the #notallmen hashtag when referring to rapists and misogynists, and who would be angry if someone said all priests are child molesters, and that not all Trump supports are racist are the ones who unanimously agree that all Muslims are terrorists and all undocumented Mexican immigrants are lazy, dangerous criminals.
How about immigration reform rather than a wall and travel bans? I'm not an economist, but it seems to be a more fiscally responsible decision. The current process is lengthy and expensive, so if we stop making folks jump through hoops of fire and make them feel like criminals for wanting better opportunities, we would generate more tax dollars and businesses would no longer be able to pay low, under-the-table wages, erasing the argument that undocumented immigrants "steal" jobs. Also, those people would have equal opportunity for education and advancement - you never know, that "illegal" brought here at age five could possibly cure cancer, given the chance at medical school. The United States is great, but could always be greater. The route the administration is taking, however, will not achieve that. Just a small reminder - the U.S. has no official religion or language, and we should be proud that others want to help us grow. Melting pot? Not so much - more like vegetable soup. Every ingredient is different but necessary to form an awesome recipe. - Whitney Patterson
Here we go again - another Evansville City Council member gets bad PR. This time the culprit is Jonathan Weaver. Last month, he was accused of violating a restraining order filed against him by his ex-wife. Weaver, like his preceding council members involved in bad behavior, is a democrat. Take, for example, former council member John Friend. Friend represented the city's fifth ward before deciding not to run for a third term in 2015. While boating, Friend was arrested for operating while intoxicated. But that wasn't his only public infraction. Friend was also seen on video giving the aforementioned Weaver the middle finger over a Facebook post while watching the returns come in on election night of the 2015 primaries. Then there was Stephanie BrinkhoffRiley. During her time as Third Ward Councilwoman, Brinkerhoff-Riley maliciously recorded a confidential meeting of government officials, left Friend a nasty voice message, and threatened to kill her campaign manager in a drunken rage during a Facebook conversation. Through all of this, local party leaders have remained silent. Since the Friend and Brinkerhoff-Riley incidents, Democrats have lost three city council seats. With Weaver typically the top council at-large vote-getter, the Democrats will have to look someplace else to keep his seat as in all likelihood, he will be forced not to run. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

THE BOSS BABY (PG) RELEASE DATE: MARCH 31ST
DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks' The Boss Baby. It's a hilariously universal story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative seven year old named Tim. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, DreamWorks' The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages.

LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS NETFLIX Despite warnings urged in the opening for each episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events, you’re not going to want to “look away” or “watch something more pleasant instead." The deliciously dissonant, vibrant-gothic mixture in set and character design alone is enough to keep you transfixed for a while. But it’s within this continually clashing note that the story itself takes root and slowly unfolds. Keeping with the original series of popular children’s novels, the show painstakingly devotes two elaborate, hour-length episodes to each of the first four books. The dialog is rich in meaning and character, which drives you to watch and discover what sardonic horror will happen next. However - like the books - the show combines its irony-driven darkness with exaggerative flair, and childlike imagination with adult sarcasm and reality. My children watched, a bit confused, as the season’s ending delivered on its opening promises. My youngest says she liked it because it was mysterious. My oldest didn’t appreciate it because it was “too real,” with no happy ending. Yet, they both compared it to Gravity Falls, a show they love. There were mixed feelings, but nonetheless, this is a quirky little show the family can watch together. - Laura Engram

USA NETWORK (SSN 2 DVD RELEASE) If you haven’t seen Mr. Robot yet - despite its gripping drama - that’s understandable. For all its enormous critical acclaim, it’s an acquired taste. As the thematic lovechild of Fight Club and Dexter, inject a story of antiheroic hacking, cyberterrorism, and drug addictions into the plot, and you’ll get a world of Elliot Alderson, the main character. It’s within that area of acquired taste and techie subculture that this show receives a full five stars. However, season two introduces unrivaled creativity, new characters, and broader crime-drama subplots which earn their own must-see status. In season one, you fall into a bizarre love for how well Rami Malek plays the antisocial, intellectually burdened, deranged-yet-conscionable Elliot Alderson. However, it’s in season two, episode three especially, that we are introduced to what a brilliantly multifaceted actor he is.

CHERRY GLAZERR Apocalipstick Secretly Canadian Cherry Glazerr rolls out a powerful, yet hypnotic second studio album, and they do it very unexpectedly, through their own indie spin on the buzzing din of garage rock. Apocalipstick takes the 'favorite' trophy this month; although my love for the Kehlani album comes close, rock usually wins out with me. Frontwoman Clementine Creevy has the voice and style of a pissed off Lana Del Rey. Her rambunctious yammering, just as often broken by her soothing and delicate quiet as it is vice versa, broods oxymoronic in the most gorgeous way. It blends perfectly with this fuzzy cement cushioning that resounds from the guitars and drums. And a few electronic elements lend perfectly-accented backdrops to dark, mangled lullabies like “Nuclear Bomb." The mellow “Told You I’d Be With the Guys," a tale of female self-recognition, sets the symphonic stage for the album - never quitting, from the psychedelically serious “Only Kid On the Block” to the slow burning melody of “Nurse Ratched” and the revving purr of “Instagratification." When you finally reach that title track at the end, you realize this garage rock is somehow uncharacteristically epic. - Laura Engram
AFI AFI (The Blood Album) Concord Music Group With the current resurgence of punk rock, AFI’s second self-titled release - melodramatically referred to as The Blood Album - has missed the vein. It’s not a bad album, but it definitely doesn’t stand out amidst all the comebacks. Some songs excited me, because I’ll always be a punk rock girl, but not to where I can give this album above 3 stars. Meaning the music is decent, but they haven’t progressed a smidgen. They don’t risk anything with what they put out. There are few singles worth picking up. Avoid “Hidden Knives," which seems to enlist the melody from verses of The Beatle’s “Eight Days a Week” for its own. “Above the Bridge” follows AFI’s pattern of attempting to be progressive, but really just feels like some sort of Flock of Seagulls cover. You want them to inject their hardcore roots, you feel like it’s almost there, but it never happens. The best we get is “White Offerings," but here lyrics fall pretty flat. “The Wind That Carries Me Away” is the most interesting track, but not enough to really inflate the sails of this ship. - Laura Engram

THE MENZINGERS After the Party Epitaph Fun fact of the month: Punk band The Menzingers hail from Scranton, Pennsylvania, the same town as the US adaptation of The Office. I remember discussing it with one of my friends back when they first started touring and being doubly surprised that: 1.) The town actually existed, and 2.) A decent band came from it. Further cementing the relationship between band and show: Later releases sometimes produce mixed bags. I can’t understate that this is an amazing album… most of the time. When the songs are great, they’re really great... but when they’re bad, they’re really bad. The lyrics of “Thick as Theives” are some of the more clever on the album, but the disco-y drum beat and vocal delivery clash with their levity. Similarly, opener “Tellin’ Lies” starts with some very clever songwriting and deeply personal lyrics, but the ending feels melodramatic. (“Charlie’s Army” is just plain bad, though.) While the band does adopt a bit of Midwestern “Aw, shucks”-type rock (see: The Gaslight Anthem, The Hold Steady, et al.) occasionally, it rarely feels artificial. Anyone who’s ever wanted to pack up and start somewhere new can relate to lines like “LA’s only two days if we drive straight” from “Midwestern States,” and it’s clear the band are growing as people and musicians. Just like The Office, I recommend (most of) it. - Jonathan Gluff
PRIESTS Nothing Feels Natural Sister Polygon As I’ve stated many times before, I love punk and its multitude of varied subgenres. So while I’m always pleased to see a marked uptick in the number of bands, I’m even more pleased to find bands who embody the ethos of it as well as the sound. Priests is one such band, and after several EPs and demos, they have graced us with their long-awaited debut full-length, Nothing Feels Natural. Katie Alice Greer’s vocal delivery undoubtedly is influenced by other great powerful frontwomen like Karen O and Kathleen Hanna, but with enough charisma to not be another Riot Grrrl also-ran. She commands the listener’s attention with a great mix of raw power, skill, and melody. Musically, guitar riffs and basslines interweave masterfully. Even the surf rock tendencies of “JJ” feel organic. And “Lelia 20” features a great drum break reminiscent of At the Drive-In’s “One Armed Scissor.” My only complaint: The stream-of-consciousness lyrics of “No Big Bang” feel more like a hip “bad drug trip” than an attempt to write a good song. (To be fair, that just may also be my hatred of slam poetry speaking.) Even then, the driving bassline, four-on-the-floor drumbeat, and ethereal vocals in the later part of the song still keep it from being a total dud. - Jonathan Gluff
NEWS4U MARCH 2017 | MUSIC REVIEWS
JASON LEE MCKINNEY BAND Sacred/Southern/Soul Self-Released “Ambitious” doesn’t always equate to “good” when used to describe an album. Fortunately, for The Jason Lee McKinney Band’s triple-EP release, it does. The appropriately titled EPs each heavily draw influence from their namesake, but even without that bit of exposition, the elements of each genre quickly make it obvious. The first, Sacred, draws heavily from staples of gospel and blues. Mississippi Delta-esque acoustic slide guitar and harmonica pepper “All Aboard," and a choir backs many songs. “Beacon for the Fleet” bolsters my opinion that aside from sporting events, gospel music is one of the few instances where stomping and clapping are acceptable as musical accompaniment. EP #2, Southern, proves that there are still actual country acts and not just more Luke Aldean clones (that’s that guy’s name, right?). At the risk of sounding blasphemous, “Seldom Seen Montana” wouldn’t sound out of place on a George Strait album. I’d even venture to say The King of Country would be proud to have written it. I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure if the band could pull off a sound inspired by the name of the third EP, Soul. “Lie Just Right,” “Ember,” and “8th Wonder” sound like the best collaborations between early Robin Thicke, Stevie Wonder, and Barry White that never happened, and I mean that in the best way possible. - Jonathan Gluff
JON HASLAM A Story Called Love Self-Released
KEHLANI SweetSexySavage Atlantic Records I have to be honest. My favorite album this month, Cherry Glazerr's Apocalipstick, full of moaning, heavy notes of feminine skepticism, plunged me into darkness. But SweetSexySavage, a bouncing soulful groove of feminine empowerment, totally lifted my spirits back from that. There’s a dark beauty in that CG album, so if you’re returning somewhat low, it’s my soul that’s recommending you give Kehlani’s vivacious emotional surety a full spin. Within lavish R&B mixes of both poppy rhythms and moving ballads, Kehlani’s breakout album makes no lyrical apologies. Even in an intro track that literally begins with condolences, she’s not saying sorry for who she is, for her love, or even for her crazy side. Instead, she confidently offers an album full of proof that a whole bunch of someones “missed the god” in her. “Distraction” and many other tracks radiate this uniquely satisfying nostalgia, rolling with that 90s-esque jazziness you’re deeply missing. Yet, my favorite, “Escape,” is an unconditional ode to the confusion of true affection. The single “CRZY” offers realness and a sexy tempo, while “Gangsta” exudes a bittersweet honesty inside a lingering majestic pulse, closing this album candidly. - Laura Engram
SO LONG VINYLS Give Up On Yourself, Indiana Self-Released
Indianapolis musician Jon Haslam is a man who apparently likes to keep things simple yet effective. Every song on his new EP consists of nothing but his voice and his guitar. Even the crux of his bio is one simple sentence: “I have a passion for good music, coffee, and storytelling.” While A Story Called Love may not confirm nor deny his self-proclaimed love of coffee, the confirmation of the other two passions gives me no reason to doubt it.
Not always do you hear this level of sheer passionate quality in a group as far underground as the So Long Vinyls. When I first went to local café PG, this home-grown band had me unflinchingly under their spell. I was mesmerized not only by their sultry performance, but the velvet voice of Matthew Mudd, which quite graciously sends shivers down your spine. Being a self-released album, Give Up On Yourself, Indiana has exceptional production value in capturing the live essence that makes them so wonderful.
It’s natural that an album whose title directly mentions “love” have an intimate feel to it. Couple that with the oft-shifting dynamics of Jon’s voice and playing (the gently fingerpicked melody of “Wellington Bell” against the powerfully strummed chords of “Circles,” or the nearwhispered opening vocals of “Even Giants Fall” juxtaposed with the impassioned singing of the title track) and you have a sound that’s hard to capture outside a small venue. Thankfully, the recording skills of Evansville’s own Steve Tyner manage to capture the feeling and rawness of a live performance without having to frequent your local coffeehouse (although you should still do that anyway!). - Jonathan Gluff
The songs each pull from a variety of creative ideas, and the lyrics keep up with the traction hammered out by intricate noteplay and rhythms. The chorus for “Vinyl Richie” ends “if I’m not paranoid, I’m not in love with you," accentuating the smooth heartstring-tugging they do best. Delicate guitar solos alive with syrupy reverb remind me of the poppy twang of the classics, especially in songs like “August: Absurd Confusion Quest." Combined with a more modernized feel and lyrical direction, this makes for some spectacular music. Evansville, listen to this album and go check them out. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • March 2017

MARCH BEER REVIEWS
This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 9 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. DOGFISH HEAD PENNSYLVANIA TUXEDO
DANIEL KNIGHT - 4.5
This one is especially good. It’s brewed by Dogfish Head in collaboration with the Woolrich clothing folks and includes spruce tips as an ingredient. It pours up photogenic with a rich dark copper color, a hazy copper one finger head and light lacing. Pine (spruce tips?), caramel and biscuit aromas dominate the smelling experience. It’s rich and almost boozy too. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate but overall it’s really well balanced. The mouthfeel is slightly crisp and sticky. Keep in mind, the ABV is 8.5%, so like other beers this time around, a designated driver is key.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3
A thick white head adorns a deep copper ale when poured into a traditional English pub glass. The scent of spruce used in the brewing process fills the nose in a manner reminiscent of hops. The spruce notes stay on the tongue while drinking the beer, but perhaps remain too long in the finish. Adventurous beer drinkers will want to try this rare offering. Pair it with sharp Cheddar cheese, smoked salmon or smoked meats.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2
This beer has a generous bouquet of spruce to the nose that leads to a big mouthful of Christmas tree. The aroma is great but it's hard to drink this one. It does have an 8.5% ABV, but the flavor is very earthy and not to my liking.

GREAT DIVIDE ORABELLE BELGIAN STYLE ALE
DANIEL KNIGHT - 4
Tripels are a breed of their own. This one pours up a cloudy, dark straw color sporting a two finger white head that mostly fades away, yet sticks around to leave lacing to the final swig. The aroma is delicious with unmistakable notes of that Belgian style yeast. Pretty complex, actually. There are some spices and banana there as well. The taste follows form with that great yeast, spices and grains in a medium mouthfeel with a great finish. Well done. Thumbs up!
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A thick white head sits atop a cloudy golden ale after pouring it into a tulip glass. The spices used during the brewing control the nose. The spices stay with the first sip of the beer, followed by some bitter notes, with the spices coming back in the long finish. Beer aficionados should definitely search out this seasonal ale. Pair it with cured prosciutto or artisanal salami, roasted Brussels sprouts, Gorgonzola cheese or pecan pie.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I like the sweet flavor of this beer and can detect peach, apricot and some spices. I also notice it has an 8.3 % ABV. This could be a very dangerous beer. I could not detect the alcohol-warming feeling, it goes down way too easy - be careful.

SHORT'S BREW GOOD HUMANS ALE
DANIEL KNIGHT - 4
Short's calls this one a “dry hopped double brown ale." I agree, it is all of that. It pours up a cloudy, medium dark brown with a dense light-tan one finger head and plenty of lacing. Its aroma is of sweet roasted malts, toffee and piney hops. There’s some fruitiness too… Like. The flavor speaks of toasted sweetness and piney hops that play well together and finish with a pleasant hop kiss. It’s interesting what happens when you match malts and hops at a high level. BTW, this brew is 9.1% ABV - proceed with caution. If you like big flavor then I recommend that you try this one.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick tan head crowns this deep brown ale after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. Rich malt scents fill the nose, with some hop presence in the end. A nice balance of malt and hops play on the tongue with the first taste of the beer, with the hops becoming more evident in the finish. This seasonal offering could pair well with hamburgers, steak, Cajun cuisine or mild Cheddar cheese.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2
The bottle looks pretty interesting but this beer is one of my least favorite in a long time. It looks like brown ale, but it has a grassy aroma. It also has a grassy flavor and some other flavor that I can't quite put my finger on.

ABITA WROUGHT IRON IPA a light pineapple-like hoppiness. There's some roasty maltiness there as well. Nice. The taste comes in smooth and finishes more on the hops. Of course there are those roasty malts too. Nice mouthfeel. This one’s not for the novice IPA person - there's a lot going on here.
DANIEL KNIGHT - 4
They call this one an American IPA. It's a strong one. It pours up dark honey in color with a lovely two finger head that sticks around to at least some degree throughout while enjoying the glass. The initial whiff had

A thick white head rests on top of this golden amber India pale ale and never completely evaporates. The fruity scent of hops dominates the nose. The hop flavor seems a bit muted at first while drinking the
beer, but it returns in the finish. It could pair well with grilled meats like steak or pork chops. It could also work nicely with grilled bratwurst and spicy mustard or spicy food like jambalaya.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This beer has a light amber color. I can smell the hops aroma, and I like the hops flavor. I consider this an entry level IPA. It's pretty tasty but not so overbearing with its flavor like most IPAs that sort of hit you over the head with hops. It also has a bumped up ABV of 6.9%.

RED HOOK LONG HAMMER IPA
DANIEL KNIGHT - 2.5
I was hopeful when I saw this brew. My previous experience with Redhook was disappointing. A brew they call ESB (extra special bitter). The pour was lackluster with a dull yellowy orange color, puny white head and bad retention with no lacing. It smells like a slightly hopped-up adjunct lager. An imitation IPA. No real malts coming through and the hops aren't fresh or aromatic. They seem to add nothing to the flavor except some bitterness - not in a good way. This was a very disappointing IPA to me. Thumbs down.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A thick white head forms on top of this straw colored ale and takes its time disappearing. A moderate amount of citrus from the hops controls the scent profile. The first sip of the beer seems light, crisp and refreshing, with the hop notes returning in the finish. This very drinkable beer and year-round staple remains Seattle’s favorite IPA for a reason. Hopheads should definitely try this one. Pair it with Cheddar cheese.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is a clear amber beer that's on the lighter side of IPAs. It has a pretty dry finish but it's not quite as flavorful as others. However, it does have an ABV of 6.2%. This beer is close to being a 4 but not quite as good as the Abita that we reviewed this month.
YAZOO DOS PERROS
DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5
This brew is a Mexican beer style from when Austria ruled Mexico in the late 19th century. It is, in my opinion, essentially a brown ale. A nice one. It pours a clear cola brown color with a small head that dissipates quickly and leaves a little lacing as it disappears from the glass. Its nose is of lightly toasted malts, caramel, nuttiness and subtle hops. The taste follows form with maltiness on the front end, a light mouthfeel and malts on the finish. This is a very drinkable, likable ale. Its ABV is low so it makes for a good session brew. It would be great to see it show up at some local Mexican restaurants.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75
A thick cream-colored head tops this beer and takes its time evaporating. The dark brown beer boasts a pleasant malty scent. The malt remains while sipping the beer, especially in the finish. The flaked corn used during the brewing process gives the beer a lighter body. This will definitely work well during hotter summer months at cookouts. It could pair well with a variety of foods, especially hamburgers and hot dogs.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a clear amber-colored beer. The flavor is a good nut brown with hints of chocolate. I think this is the best nut brown I have had in a long time. I haven't had many beers from the Yazoo brewery, but this is my favorite so far.

arch has arrived and with it comes St. Patrick’s Day along with the NCAA basketball tournament - what an exciting time of year for beer. But 2017 brings even more exciting news with the introduction of Yuengling to the Indiana market. First started in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Yuengling is the oldest brewery in America and has become a staple brand in many states along the east coast and in the south. It's been talked about for many years that Yuengling would eventually make its way to Indiana and finally it has. For this edition of Tap Talk, I'm going to introduce you to the three beers that Yuengling will bring to us starting in March. So for those Yuengling lovers that don’t want to drive to Tennessee
anymore just to pick up that case of your favorite beer, now you can come to your local bar and get it. Yuengling Lager is famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor with roasted caramel malt for a subtle sweetness and a combination of cluster and cascade hops. Delivers a well-balanced taste with a very distinct character. Yuengling Light is a brew that appeals to drinkers who don’t want to sacrifice character for a low calorie light beer. Developed to maintain a full flavor similar to the lager but only has 99 calories. Yuengling Black & Tan is a favorite that
combines the Yuengling Dark Porter with the Yuengling Premium beer. Rich and dark in color, it has a wellbalanced flavor, with hints of caramel and coffee. Finishes very smooth and satisfying. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s will be having a tapping party on March 7. Come out and celebrate the start of a new tradition in Indiana and help us welcome Yuengling to the state. Also, don’t forget that St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17. We will have the Hadi Shrine Highlanders bagpipes at 5 p.m. That is always a special time when they arrive. And we will be having our famous corn beef and cabbage along with other Irish favorites. March is always a great time here at Beef’s.

WALTER THE WINE GUY Liquor Locker's resident expert has some tasty suggestions for the coming spring season
A
rosé by any other name is a wine to drink!
Well, March is here. The weather has been quite strange this year, warmer than normal at times, then cold again! Trying to figure it out has been a challenge. But, hopefully, the weather will start to normalize and we can count on spring to enter the area soon! With this in mind, we can start eating lighter, maybe even think about buying that new bathing suit. Salads and lighter fare will be gracing your dinner tables, so this is a style of wine that should be in your chiller at the ready! Now, I can’t say much about the bathing suit, but I can tell you what I will be drinking now until the weather starts to get cold again, and that is rosé! I honestly think that the newfound affinity for this style of wine has opened up the possibilities for finding a wonderful wine for any price point that you want. If you like fruity and slightly sweet there is one for you, but if you want a light, bright, mineral-laden wine there is a wonderful one for you, too! My tastes leans toward the light, dry wines that work with food - remember I was a chef in my former life, and most of my wine purchases have a food in mind for them. But, I do know that there are quite a few of you who like the sweet or fruity styles. So, for
you I would recommend a wine from a sustainable winery from Oregon named Cardwell Vineyards. It's Pinot Noir Rosé from their Willamette Valley property. The flavors are lush, with light notes of strawberries and raspberries, all with a slight amount of residual sugar that makes this wine fruity but not sticky sweet. It's the perfect wine for the person who likes sweet wine but really wants to reduce the sugar. Try it with a light spinach salad with candied walnuts, sliced red onion, feta cheese, and fresh sliced strawberries tossed with raspberry vinaigrette. Another option from Oregon is Acrobat Rosé of Pinot Noir from the King Estate family, sourced from their own vineyards in Oregon. This wine has aromas of wild strawberry, orange blossom, lavender, and raspberry. The wine gives you flavors of honeydew, lime zest, and strawberry, with clean notes of mineral. It's very reasonably priced at $12.99 and should be around to quench your thirst or to wash down some fruit salad! For the wine drinker who likes fruit, but doesn’t want it too fruity, I recommend a wine from the central/ northern Rhone in France from Paul Jaboulet Aine Winery. It's their flagship Rhone wine called Parallele 45 Rosé - ABSOLUTELY wonderful, with subtle fresh tart red cherry notes,
and very balanced crispness, with a wonderful clean finish. I really like this wine! It’s reasonably priced at $15.99 and if you only had one choice this should be the one. Serve this with grilled pork chops with cranberry chutney, grilled summer squash, and rice pilaf. In the Provence region of France, there are producers that ONLY make rosés and have been for many years. One great example is Le Charmel Cote De Provence Rosé. It's a blend of 30% Syrah, 30% Cinsault, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache, and 10% Rolle. I drink this wine at every opportunity - it has a nose that beckons you with aromas of raspberry and wild flowers, plus wonderful bright and fresh flavors of strawberry and tart pear. Serve this with some herbed goat cheese and baguette. It's just a well made wine that should be savored! If you're looking for rosés we have them from all over the world, so I am sure there is one that fits your taste and is perfect for any occasion. Be open and available to these wines and let me know what you think. I'm going to try to have them in the stores for the entire season - many I have purchased on pre-sales so when they run out you may need to expand your tastes and purchase a different one each visit! I'm going to be in the stores more this year so I hope to see you there. I'll be at the University Store on most Mondays, St. Joe on Wednesdays, and First Ave. on Fridays. Also, I will be doing tasting at University on the first Tuesday of the month, St. Joe the second Tuesday of the month, First Ave. the second Friday of the month, Weinbach the third Tuesday of the month and Morgan the fourth Tuesday of the month. This way I'll be able to talk to you face to face and drink some good wine, too! Hope all is well, I’ll see you soon. Walt
