NEWS4U MAY 2017 | EDITOR'S CORNER

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

A

llow me to start this month's note off by giving a shout-out to all the moms in the tri-state. Simply put, you're all doing a bang-up job and certainly deserve more recognition than one measly day each year. I think most would agree. So for the love of all that is good in this world, put the kibosh on the texting, pick up the phone and CALL her. You know, have an actual conversation, even if it cuts into your precious minutes or whatever plan you're currently saddled with. It's the least you can do for the person that carried you around in her belly for the better part of a year - and without a drop of alcohol to boot! Anyhow, on with the show... The community is really coming alive in May with the arrival of warm weather: summer socials, bike rides,

house tours, golf outings - plenty of action out there. Still, if you're more of an indoor type, you can check out the one and only Olivia Newton-John at the Victory on May 19 (see our interview with the Aussie legend on pg. 8) as well as the Fab Four Beatles Tribute on May 21. And if the bar scene is your thing, the new KC's Marina Pointe is set to open with a bang over Cinco de Mayo weekend featuring a headlining set by Pittsburgh's Radio Tokyo. Elsewhere, you can catch the band reunion of all band reunions at Piston's Bar & Grill when The C.R.O.W.D. returns for a wild show on May 28 (details inside). Plus, we've got a ROMP 2017 preview by way of an interview with festival headliner, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Happy Mother's Day! - TE

"The aussie Icon is still on the way up."

AN EVENING WITH OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN VICTORY THEATRE | MAY 19 | 7 P.M.

Beloved Aussie singer gets "Physical," discusses LIV ON, handling fame and more With a catalogue of timeless hits that includes "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Magic" and "Physical," Olivia Newton-John has carved out an indelible music career spanning over five decades. As a young girl, she competed in singing contests and appeared on Australian daytime TV before officially going solo with the release of 1971's If Not For You. Success on the country charts followed, but it was Newton-John's star turn as Sandra Dee in the 1978 blockbuster musical Grease that set her off on a meteoric rise to fame. All these years later, the Aussie icon is seemingly still on the way up. A beloved performer all over the world, Newton-John is known as a breast cancer survivor and a champion of humanitarian causes. She recently teamed up with friends Beth Nielsen Chapman and Amy Sky to produce LIV ON, a healing album for those who wish to transcend loss and shape a better life ahead.

8|

You've always had a very classy image, and yet, "Physical" was considered quite controversial back in 1981 - which seems laughable considering the nature of pop music today. Well, I just think it's so hilarious that I was so worried at the time (laughs). And I tried to stop it being released and it was too late, and I'm going, 'Oh my god, I've gone too far.' And here we are now and they [today's pop stars] just talk about anything - no boundaries. "Physical" was so subtle compared to what's happening now. It just shows that times change and things evolve; it's funny, I think. Before the whole world came to know you through Grease, you had already released numerous albums and scored several hits on the country charts. Considering it was the early 70s and you were a woman in a maledominated industry, did you have much say in how you were marketed? You know, the first few albums were pretty much about the music - it surprised me that the music took off. The only time that there was a decision to try something different was the album when we hired Helmut Newton to do the cover shot - Soul Kiss. And I wasn't really comfortable with it. What's interesting is that it didn't really do well, either. I didn't feel comfortable with the whole idea of deliberately doing a sexy album cover. I think I'm more natural, and if good things come out of it, great. But to try and do something provocative just didn't work for me. But that was the only time that we deliberately went after a different look - when the record company wanted something different. Apart from that, all of the marketing simply came out of the music.

May 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Your latest album, LIV ON, has been very well received. Have you and your collaborators been flooded with messages from fans? Yes, we have - and at the shows, even. For the LIV ON shows we decided to do a Q&A and ask people to share their stories. And we were amazed that people did want to share their stories of loss and grief. And out of that came all sorts of wonderful healing between people - and people didn't feel alone and they cried but felt better afterwards. It's been really fantastic. You became the most recognizable woman on the planet in the late 70s. How did you keep your feet on the ground? I was lucky in that I had been working for many years before I had big success. It wasn't like I started singing and then the next week I was a huge star. And I've always had my feet on the ground and realized that tomorrow it will be somebody else [that's popular]. I just remember being told that when you're looking out in the audience and they're waving those candles, that tomorrow they'll be waving them for someone else. So you've got to keep things in perspective. I think I've done that. I have a very normal home life with my husband and my animals and daughter - I've always managed to keep things in balance. THE C.R.O.W.D. PISTON'S | MAY 28 | 9:30 P.M.

Reunited: tri-state's ultimate party band returning to rock your world in a big way It's been seven long years since The C.R.O.W.D. last took the stage at a local venue, but the biggest band the tri-state has ever known is back in a big way, preparing to rock your world with a string of reunion shows over the summer. Yes, the five crude, rude, obnoxious white dudes that absolutely dominated the music scene from 1991-2003 routinely drawing upwards of 1000+ fans every weekend at places like Harpole's and Marina Pointe - have been busy rehearsing and putting together a killer set list of covers from the heyday of grunge, rap-rock and alternative rock. Factor in The C.R.O.W.D.'s legendary stage show, and it's easy to understand why there's a major buzz happening. A longtime fan of the band, 103GBF DJ Jimmie Ford has been right at the forefront of local music. "In my opinion, The C.R.O.W.D. started what became a very good music scene in the Evansville area at the time," he says. "They were the definition of a "party band." And as an added bonus, the music was tight. Perhaps because they were so much fun to listen to, I think people often forget just how talented the band was - as far as musicians go, solid at every position." The solid lineup Ford refers to features charismatic lead singer TJ Tanoos, guitarists Brent Hill and Brad Skinner, drummer Rex Brush and bassist Bill Betz. In addition to being a huge draw for years at local venues, they often traveled out of town, playing Indianapolis, Lexington and Louisville, plus the college circuit - IU, Purdue and others. Heck, the guys even opened for Night Ranger and Steppenwolf. The C.R.O.W.D.'s comeback is set to begin at Piston's on May 28 - a much-anticipated return guaranteed to be the biggest show of the year. Be sure to get there early and catch the opening set by Nutshell at 7 p.m. Stay tuned for an in-depth interview with the band in next month's issue! For more info, visit pistonsbarandgrill.com.

LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE 2017 PERFORMANCE SERIES MAY 20 - SEPTEMBER 30

Grand Funk Railroad highlights a summer of fantastic shows at the area's largest outdoor amphitheatre Located just 55 minutes northeast of Evansville, the 1500-seat Lincoln Amphitheatre is quite simply one of the most stunning concert venues in the nation. But up until last year, it primarily served to tell the story of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who spent much of his childhood and teen years in the area now known as Lincoln City. 2016, however, saw a revamp of the entertainment focus for the amphitheatre. High profile acts such as Eddie Money, alt-rockers Cracker and several nationally known tribute bands took the stage for the first time, resulting in one of the best attended seasons in the venue's 30 year history. Buoyed by last year's successful run, organizers have put together an even more impressive list of stars and tribute bands for the 2017 Performance Series, highlighted by classic rockers Grand Funk Railroad ("We're An American Band") along with award-winning country singer Lee Ann Womack ("I Hope You Dance") and a series-closing set by the legendary Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels.

ROMP FEST 2017 YELLOW CREEK PARK | OWENSBORO, KY | JUNE 21 - 24

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna reflects on

Circlin' Back, talks "King Tut," ROMP and more The countdown is on to the area's biggest summer music festival. An annual gathering in Owensboro, KY featuring some of the biggest names in Americana, bluegrass, country and folk, ROMP Fest has grown by leaps and bounds, drawing huge crowds to scenic Yellow Creek Park every June for an unforgettable celebration. 2017 marks the 14th edition of the festival, and this year's lineup may just be the best yet. ROMP veterans Punch Brothers are joined by Grammy Award-winning Los Lobos, fan favorite Keller Williams and founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rhiannon Giddens - just to name a few of the many highlights. It all leads up to a headlining performance by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the legendary country rock group known for such classics as "Fishin' in the Dark," "Mr. Bojangles" and "An American Dream." The guys recently documented 50 remarkable years in the music business with Circlin' Back, a celebratory show

filmed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna kindly spoke with News4U ahead of ROMP Fest. What was the experience of playing the 50th anniversary show like for you? It was kind of an out of body experience, because all of the people that were in the show were musicians that we had played with at various times over the years - either in the studio or in a live situation. It was really a family reunion of sorts. [Bluegrass artist] Sam Bush jokingly called us the Nitty Gritty E Street Band that night, because the band was so big - like seven people on stage at all times. But it was great - so much fun. The crowd was amazing - people were just coming out of their skin every time a friend of ours walked out on stage. And getting to play jug band music with [former band member] Jackson Browne was incredible because we hadn't done that since 1966. Over time, band members have come and gone - and come back again. And there have been stylistic shifts as a result. To your mind, what period signaled the most pronounced shift? There was a period in the 80s when we called ourselves the Dirt Band actually, it was 1978-82. Which was just really an abbreviation - it wasn't

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band intended as any giant musical shift. At that time, we had a couple musicians who were Loggins & Messina alumni playing with us - Al Garth played tenor sax and fiddle with us and then Merel Bregante played drums. And then a friend of ours from Colorado, Richard Hathaway, played bass. With the three of those guys during that era, we shifted to what you might call "mainstream" but I prefer to call it a countryesque Jimmy Buffett kind of vibe. Around that time we had a hit called "An American Dream" that we did with our buddy Linda Ronstadt and then we followed that up with a record featuring Nicolette Larson. I would say that that era had a little less of a bluegrass influence, that's for sure. From my standpoint, I don't really regret it, because it's hard to keep things interesting. I'd say that in a lot of ways, the band has circled back to the vibe that we had in the 70s - when we made the transition from jug band to country rock band. And when I say "country rock," I'm really referring to the California country rock sound of the late 60s and early 70s. We had a great run at country radio in the 80s, but it was also during a time when country radio was nothing like it is now. Legend has it that the band collaborated with comedian Steve Martin on his millionselling 1978 novelty hit, "King Tut." I played lead guitar and arranged the track. It's actually the only gold 45 single that Cont. on page 14

I have on my wall - it's great. I'm very proud and it was so much fun, because Steve's a great guy. Interestingly, "King Tut" was basically an accident. Steve sat in on a gig with us that we did in LA and he told us that he'd scribbled down some lyrics to an idea that he had for a song. We went out and kind of performed it, just sort of winging it on stage. Then a couple of weeks later, his manager, Bill McEuen, called me and asked if we would cut a demo with Steve. So he came to our studio one afternoon and we cut "King Tut" in a couple of hours. And it went on to become a huge hit - a novelty record, but a great one, I might add. It's been eight years since the release of the last NGDB album, Speed of Life - where are you in terms of a follow-up? You know, it's complicated. The thing is that we all don't live in the same town - we're spread out all over the place. So, we've got to be ready to record. We've got plenty of tunes and enthusiasm, but it's a little tougher to wrap our heads around how to do it. But you know, I hate to beat around the bush about this, because I would love for there to be a new record. But the downside is this: when we go out and play, people want to hear the old stuff. And as a fan, I totally get that. But I will also say that we still play a couple of things from Speed of Life - and people really enjoy them. I think it's one of the best records that we ever made. Yet, we barely broke even on it. So, it was tough after the fact to get real excited. I mean, the fans that took the time to listen to it really loved it. The world at large was a tougher sell, because there's lots of great music released every single week. But truthfully, whenever we make a new record, it always makes us feel better - it's like a transfusion of sorts. Can you clue us in on what you have in store for the band's headlining set at ROMP - any collaborations in mind? Well, I'd have to know who's playing in the lineup on that day. But typically, our set is a self-contained show. We do have a great buddy of ours that has been touring with us for the last couple of years named Jim Photoglo - he plays bass and acoustic guitar, sings harmony as well. He co-wrote "Fishin' in the Dark." The band is beefier, in my opinion, and definitely deeper vocally, too. Material-wise, we go back as far as 1966 and right up through some stuff that we cut on Speed of Life. And we try to suit the crowd - whether it's more of a country crowd or an Americana crowd. Truly, we're really looking forward to ROMP - it sounds like a blast. For tickets and the full ROMP lineup, visit rompfest.com.

nother wonderfully diverse season of Classics and Pops Series performances is coming to a close for Maestro Savia and the Philharmonic Orchestra. Themed "An American Celebration," the 2016-2017 campaign featured a patriotic repertoire that delighted longtime supporters and new converts alike right from the first note of Toyota's Opening Night - way back in September. Who better than world-renowned cellist Zuill Bailey to kick things off in style? It was a sign of very good things to come. More Classics Series highlights followed, including a performance of Leonard Bernstein's highly theatrical Mass with Celebrant/Baritone Jubilant Sykes, the return of Brooklyn's electrifying ensemble, Project Trio, and a much-anticipated collaboration with pianist Spencer Myer, one of the most sought-after artists on today's concert stage. Rest assured the EPO did not disappoint on the Pops side of things, either. Their wonderfully creepy Halloween Bash sent chills up the spine with music from Psycho, Phantom of the Opera and more, while

the annual Peppermint Pops holiday show put everyone in a festive mood via the smooth vocal stylings of Daniel Narducci and Christina Overton. But perhaps the most spectacular performance of all came courtesy of Cirque de la Symphonie. The troupe's mesmerizing combination of strength and acrobatics set to music from Titanic, Hook and other blockbuster films had everyone at the Victory enraptured. Now there's just one more Pops Series performance to go before Maestro Savia and the Philharmonic Orchestra take a much-deserved breather - and then reconvene to start planning the 2017-2018 season. On May 13 and 14, the EPO will bring an iconic action/ adventure film to life inside the Victory Theatre. Prepare to see Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark in a whole new way with live accompaniment to the 1981 classic; take in the heart-pounding recreation of John Williams' epic score with the sort of beauty and power that only Maestro Savia and the Philharmonic Orchestra can produce; relive the magic of

Williams, whose remarkable career has spanned over six decades, remembers his time working on the Raiders score quite fondly. "Speaking for myself, I must say that the experience of composing the music for this film, and for the subsequent installments in the series, was a very happy one, and offered me a wild and truly joyous ride. I’m especially delighted that the magnificent Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra has agreed to perform the music for a live presentation of the movie." MO'S HOUSE 1114 SE PARRETT ST. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 47713

Former Sauced bar manager branching out on her own with new Haynie's Corner venture

"I've

always been called "Mo" - I only get called Moriah if I'm in trouble," explains former Sauced bar manager Moriah Rose - Mo Rose, that is. She's definitely not in trouble; in fact, the 28-year-old award-winning mixologist is on everybody's good side of late with the opening of her cool new downtown Evansville bar just around the corner. Appropriately named Mo's House, it's a dream come true for Rose whose family ran Big Daddy's in Henderson, KY for a couple of years during her late teens. The popular outdoor bar not only provided a summer job - bussing tables, checking IDs, slinging grub - but also planted the seed for business ownership. 10 years later, she's busy making last-minute renovations to the building that housed Haynie's Corner Pub for many years, transforming it into what she calls a "super laidback establishment with a cocktail bar vibe." Rose didn't always envision this path in life, though. After graduating from Henderson County High School, she studied photo journalism and textile design at Western Kentucky University with an eye on becoming a fashion photographer; still, she always seemed to gravitate back to the nightlife that drove the family business for a time. A move to Evansville in 2009 really upped the ante as Rose became a familiar face around town at some of the most popular bars and restaurants. Ri Ra Irish Pub, Hornet's Nest, Tin Man Brewing - she worked at them all over the years; however, her most recent - and most high profile - position was running the Blue Bar at Sauced Italian Restaurant located right across the street from what would become Mo's House. "I would look out the window and think

20 |

that the Haynie's Corner Pub building was so awesome," Rose says. "I always joked with the owner that I was going to buy the place from him." And on December 5, 2016 - coincidentally, the 83rd anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, as she points out she did just that.

"We'll take all the weirdos - we're all a little quirky."

A little about the place: Mo's House will feature classic cocktails - Old Fashioneds, Martinis, Manhattans and other old school drinks that never go out of style. Beer-wise, they'll have all your craft and domestic favorites. According to Rose, the goal is to accommodate for all different tastes and different types of people. In other words, everyone is welcome. Which also means that there's no dress code. As Rose says, "We'll take all the weirdos - we're all a little quirky."

May 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Rose and her father are working feverishly on the decor as the clock ticks down to a planned early May grand opening. Maple floors are being sanded and the interior is getting a facelift. Truly, it's a labor of love, the culmination of years spent learning the business. Rest assured Rose understands just how blessed she is. "It's very cool to watch your dreams come true; I've been humbled by the support that I've gotten from everyone in the community."

mericans have never been so polarized, so at odds over everything from guns to politics. But if there's one area of common ground, it's money - more specifically, the fact that we all need help making it and managing it. Sure, some of us may think that we know how to handle our finances, but in reality, the vast majority of Americans are clueless. Thankfully, there are professionals out there to make up for our lack of insight - hardworking, knowledgeable professionals like Kevin Anslinger & Patrick Bassett. This financially-savvy duo's sole focus is to educate. Not to sell. There's a big difference. Speaking of polarizing, Anslinger & Bassett make for an interesting pair in that their personalities are seemingly miles apart. The former is laid back and concise while the latter is intense and highly-detailed. These marked differences, however, have served them very well - the two diametricallyopposed approaches actually work in tandem, particularly in a face-to-face meeting with a client which is how Anslinger & Bassett prefer to interact. It's commonly known as "good cop/bad cop," meaning that people need to feel comfortable, but they also need to hear the truth about their financial situation, even if it's ugly. So while Anslinger seemingly gets along with everyone, it's Bassett who often delivers the bad news - but only because it's so important that there's no grey area, no false sense of security. Starting from ground zero is the only way to assure that real progress can be made and that your future will be financially sound.

employees? What about bonus programs for retention? And on the flip side of the coin, Anslinger & Bassett often speak with employees who have left their job. For example, if the employee's benefits have changed now that the company is no longer footing the bill, how can that be compensated? These are exactly the types of conversations that need to happen but that most people do everything to avoid. And that's why Anslinger & Bassett rely on a technique they like to call "shut up and listen." No joke, they will often walk into a client meeting, ask one question, and then sit back and not say a word for the next 30 minutes, sometimes much longer - all in an effort to find out what you want from them, to truly understand what's best for you at that particular stage of your life. And once they've got a read on your situation, then it's all about educating, educating, educating. Already covering ground from Indianapolis to south of Nashville, Anslinger & Bassett hope to expand to all 50 states in the coming years, an ambitious goal for sure, but one that seems doable considering their current rate of success and motivation to be the financial professionals that everyone turns to for help. You'd be wise to spend an hour or two with this unique duo and let them put you on the right path to a secure future.

But enough backstory. How can Anslinger & Bassett help you? These guys handle everything from estate planning and retirement planning to college funding. They frequently work with stay-at-home moms (so under-valued) and newlyweds - and especially business owners. For example, what can a business owner affordably offer his or her Registered Representative with NYLIFE Securities LLC (Member FINRA/SIPC) A Licensed Insurance Agency

ewburgh eatery Pizza Chef stays busy, and while there are many reasons why, one of the most notable is the family-run atmosphere. Hands-on owner Cary Beckner has an excellent manager - his daughter, Elishia Bailey. Beckner acquired the business in November of 2014, but the once-tiny establishment has been around for 38 years and has only flourished and expanded under the father/ daughter duo's care. The former shotgun restaurant now boasts a large dining room, a separate, full-service bar, two huge party rooms, an arcade, and a kitchen that pumps out specialty pizzas, home-style dinners, buffet items, desserts, and much more. I was glad that my first visit was for Thursday dinner - not only was there a fresh cornucopia of salad bar items, they were serving my favorite soup (broccoli cheese), and the buffet was brimming with pizza (house-made crust/ sauce), bread sticks, lasagna, fresh, house-battered fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, and three desserts. Even as a west-sider who typically doesn't enjoy venturing further east than First Avenue, I will vouch that the fried chicken alone is worth the trip, so everything else is a tasty bonus. Although I wanted to try everything on the menu, I stuck to the salad bar and buffet until I nearly

needed to be carried out. Disclaimer: Pizza Chef does not offer this service - I asked. Besides the buffet (check Facebook for times/ item availability), they also offer a full menu with pizza, delicious appetizers, wings, sandwiches, burgers, lasagna, spaghetti, specialty pasta dishes, chicken dinners (Friday night/ all day Thursday and Sunday), desserts, and daily specials including Family Movie Night on Tuesday where kids eat free with an adult pizza or entree purchase. Next trip: more chicken, but I'll save room for some lasagna and possibly Banana Foster Cheesecake Bites. WHAT CAN SUNSHINE JUICE DO FOR YOU? by Gabriella Federico

In

an age of kale chips and avocado toast, it’s hard to know what’s a health trend and what’s actually good for you. Here at Sunshine Juice Co., we like to break down the facts so you’ll understand juicing isn’t just fashionable for yogapants-wearers, but universally beneficial for all ages. When you consume fresh, raw juice, you’re consuming vital nutrients which absorb directly into your bloodstream. Healthy cells are necessary to fight off health problems like cancer and heart disease. The alkalizing properties of fresh juice counteract the acidity in your body produced by grains, animal products, coffee, alcohol, and highly-processed foods. Ultimately, juice is a simple and convenient way to promote detoxification, alkalization, and maximized cellular nutrition. So why go with pricier, unprocessed, cold-pressed juices when you could pick up a $3 liter from Walmart? Unprocessed, cold-pressed juice contains living enzymes, which give the other

components of nutrition (carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals) the capacity to work well in your body. All methods of processing destroy living enzymes, and since here at Sunshine, we never use any sort of processing method including HPP (high-pressure processing) - Sunshine Juice Co. is the way to go! At Sunshine, we have a variety of juices. Whether you are in the mood for an earthy, cleansing juice, or a sweet, fruity refresher, we can find something to suit your palate. We also offer juice cleanses, which help fight cellular degeneration and promote proper digestion, better metabolism, more energy, and mental clarity. Come visit us! We’d love to see you!

Kentucky grown: Henderson native making his mark with alternative country sound

I

t's quite possible - highly likely, really that 32-year-old Timmy Dunn is the only country singer to get his start in a R&B group. Not just any R&B group, mind you. This one went by the totally classy name of Refined and inked a deal with Soundproof Records out of Washington, DC back in the early 2000s. Just teenagers at the time, barely old enough for a learner's permit, Dunn and his brother Weston were invited out to the nation's capital for recording sessions and dealings with label associate, Ginuwine (yes, that Ginuwine). All this from a series of seemingly ill-advised cold calls to artist reps and an impromptu speaker-phone audition. But there was a catch, unfortunately. Turns out Dunn's mother wasn't nearly as thrilled about the prospect of her two boys becoming embroiled in the sketchy music industry and wasted no time pumping the brakes on Refined's career. But don't shed any tears for the brothers Dunn. Things have turned out pretty ok for the both of them as you'll soon find out. Post-Refined, Weston became a producer for Sony Entertainment. Most recently, he contributed a track to Louisville R&B singer Bryson Tiller's 2015 multi-platinum album, Trapsoul - an accomplishment that makes his older brother very proud. "He's doing really great things, and he's right here in Henderson," Dunn says. For Dunn, however, music took a prolonged backseat to fatherhood. It was understandable considering his new responsibilities, but friends still couldn't resist giving him a hard

time about letting go of the dream. "So I decided to sit down and start the writing process," he says. "But I got to thinking about the content of R&B songs - they're all about sex and drugs. And here I was with a daughter. I didn't want to make music that I couldn't share with her." It may seem surprising to some that Dunn instead set his sights on becoming a country singer. After all, apart from Charley Pride and, most recently, Darius Rucker, the genre has produced very few African-American stars. But his upbringing may help explain things. "I'm mixed race - my mom is white and my dad is black, so I heard anything and everything musically when I was younger, from Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to John Anderson and Tracy Lawrence," Dunn says. Not only is country music in his DNA, but vocally, he has a gravely twang tailor-made for songs about the south, summer love and the like. All that was missing was a proper band to showcase his talent. Easier said than done, of course. In fact, it took over two years, but Dunn finally assembled a great group of musicians that mesh well together. Here's where things get very interesting. In May 2016, Dunn released his debut EP featuring four solid tracks that leaned heavily on a country rock vibe with a 3 Doors Down/90's guitar sound. In other words, not your typical Nashville stuff. But people started buying it - both here and abroad in countries like Canada and France. Even better, the sole

ballad, "Sometimes," received airplay in the UK and that connection has led to a planned 2018 tour of English cities, including Leeds, London and Manchester. It's all been a little surprising to Dunn. "Early on I had people tell me that my EP sounded too "alternative," he says, "but there are people rapping in country songs these days, so I don't feel the need to change." And why should he? Especially considering how popular his new single, "Kentucky Grown," is proving to be. Debuted in March, the hook-filled song (expertly produced by Tom DuPree III) has been widely embraced as evidenced by the big turnout at the Crowded House in Madisonville to celebrate its release. Heck, Maker's Mark even stepped in that night to lend a hand, promoting a special "Kentucky Grown" concoction that fans couldn't get enough of. But this is all just the beginning of big things to come. With the UK tour on the horizon, a run of New York and Pennsylvania shows booked and a new EP in the works, Dunn is in demand - and still a little taken aback. "All of this is crazy to me. A year ago I never thought about any of this. I'm just trying to catch up with everything and figure out where to go next." Follow Timmy Dunn Music on Facebook for more info and show dates.

AROUND THE TRACK WITH BILLY EGELER

Welcome back to another season of racing from around the tri-state!

I

t's May and things have already been rockin' and rollin' around the motorsports world and as the weeks click off, the action will get hotter and hotter! Several big events are on tap at our local tracks this season and without typing everyone's schedule out, here are the tracks in the area, and you can check out their websites or Facebook pages to see what’s on tap! Greater Evansville Dragway in Chandler, IN will make the jump to IHRA Drag Racing this season. Bringing IHRA to what has been NHRA land forever spices things up a bit. We look forward to seeing what Kevin and the crew have up their sleeves for the 1/8 mile this season.

Rockport Raceway in Reo, IN is the destination for your go kart racing fix! Racing on Saturday nights, the Wettstain family has turned this little dirt track around! Moving into their second season as track operators, this season looks to be the healthiest one in years! Kentucky Motor Speedway swings its gates open for the 57th straight year this season. The 3/8 mile asphalt track is one of only two in the state of Kentucky still operating on a regular basis. Brad, Anita and the Payne family pour their heart and soul into this track and have an action-packed schedule on tap this year.

Chandler Speedway in Chandler, IN continues the grassroots racing every Friday night in 2017. Mark and his crew have worked feverishly over the off-season continuing to make improvements as weather allowed. I personally think 2017 will be a good one for the 3/8 mile dirt oval.

Windy Hollow Speedway will again be opening for 2017 under the direction of the Westerfield Family. Starting their second season as track operators, there is never a “Normal” show at the nearly famous 3/8 mile “D” shaped dirt track. The Westerfields have also taken the reins of the 1/8 mile drag strip this season. The plan is to take it back to Old School with no prep, street racing with no electronic timing system.

Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN will be celebrating their 60th year of racing this season at the 1/4 mile clay oval. Producing some of the absolute BEST racing on the planet every time the Helfrich crew swing the gates open, it’s no wonder it's called “The Class Track."

Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, KY continues having impressive car counts, crowd counts and some great racing. Richard Ashby and his family as well as Angie Baird and crew are in it for the long run. The annual Hope for Harlie race will once again see the American Modified

Series join forces in 2017. This is always one of the biggest races of the season for the super fast 3/8 mile dirt track! Western Kentucky Speedway has reopened for 2017 with yet another new set of faces behind the wheel. Mike Swatzel and Bobby Reagan will be running their Saturday night shows and rumor has it tossing some Friday night shows in as well. We wish them the best of luck! In closing, I invite you to check out my newest venture. Performance Racing Weekly is a weekly pod cast talking to racers from all walks of life and from EVERY form of racing. We will also be having some behind-the-scenes Facebook Live action from tracks, race shops and industry leading shops. Like our Facebook page and check out performanceracingweekly.com. Until next month, make sure to get out and hit up some race tracks. If you've never been to a local track, now is the time to do it. I can almost promise you, once you go… you will be hooked! PEACE! EVANSVILLE COUNTRY CLUB | JUNE 5

2nd annual fundraiser continuing the effort to restore classic marquee on Main Street "When I moved here, I was looking for the Victory Theatre, and it took me a bit to realize I was standing right in front of it," Ford Center Executive Director Scott Schoenike says as he recounts the moment when the idea to bring back the historic venue's original sign first took shape. "There are really no markings on it - just the glass doors." In 2012, he and his team took over operations of the Victory and started doing some research. What they discovered was surprising. "We found out that replacing the marquee was actually phase two of the original Victory restoration project in 1998," Schoenike explains. "Fundraising had begun, but then it just fell by the wayside." To get the money ball rolling again, Schoenike and the Friends of Victory Theatre (a group of influential community members) planned an inaugural golf outing at Evansville Country Club last year. The top notch event made for a great way to kick off the restoration effort. "There are so many other golf outings that we wanted to separate ourselves a little bit," Schoenike says. "We wanted business people to take their clients and be able to say, 'That was worth it.'" And worth it, it was. Now this high class fundraiser is back for another round. Once again, serious SWAG will be on offer, including tee gifts and a Trackman Š golf swing analysis chock full of data to improve your game. Come out and support the effort to light up Main Street! Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 noon. For more info, call 812-422-8000 or email sbrock@thefordcenter.com. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2017

NEWS4U MAY 2017 | LOCAL/REGIONAL MUSIC

TIMOTHY MICHAEL ASH Take me to church: Country music singer goes back to his roots with inspiring new EP Timothy Michael Ash was basically born into a band. Growing up in Bridgeport, IL, he was literally surrounded by music - pretty much everyone in his immediate family played and sang, including his dad and two older brothers (Ash humorously likens it to hanging out with the Darlings from the Andy Griffith Show). So when he came of age, a bass guitar was duly placed into his hands and his education began. Lesson one: never use a pick. "Dad came from the old school of hard knocks - that's how I learned to play music," Ash explains. Listening to music was a whole other learning curve. While gospel and everyone from Johnny Cash to Elvis landed in dad's sweet spot, Ash's oldest brother preferred the sounds of the 70s - Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker, Billy Joel and ELO. Meanwhile, the middle brother was swept up in 80s hair metal. Ash himself dug Michael Jackson but inevitably soaked in everything. Looking back, he misses the musical freedom of the time. "I remember the days when Brian Jackson of 96STO would play a Hank Williams, Jr. song, then Mellencamp, then Springsteen, then a pop band and then another country song nobody cared, it was all just music," Ash says. As he got older, Ash joined - and departed a number of bands, including both punk and metal outfits,

but also played in church and at family jamborees; and he eventually began writing original material with a country flavor; smart, considering he both looks and sounds a bit like Jason Aldean. Then in the early 2000s, two traumatic life events sent Ash heading south - to Nashville. First, a near-death experience on the job at the Marathon Oil Refinery put him out of commission for an extended period. That was followed by the dissolution of his relationship which resulted in divorce. However, Ash was undeterred. With a new sense of purpose and appreciation for life, he took off for Music City and slowly infiltrated the songwriting industry's inner sanctum. "I'm not the greatest singer, but with my personality, I wedged my way three or four circles in and met a lot of great people," he says. "I learned a big lesson that integrity still matters most - people just want people that are genuine and real." Not coincidentally, Ash titled his excellent 2002 debut album Get Real. And yet, he admits to losing focus, to being blinded by the brass ring that he had "three fingers around" - so close to the big time. Personal issues only compounded the situation; he packed up and settled in Evansville to right the ship. Over the next 10 years, he would return to Nashville intermittently to record three more albums: In No Particular Order, Round 3 and Up on Blocks. Each stood on its own merits and contained some of his best songs, including "Thumbs Up for Lane," Ash's touching tribute to Lane Goodwin, a local victim of childhood cancer. But ultimately, they somehow lacked the raw honesty of Get Real. Feeling disillusioned

with music - especially the business side of the equation after a publishing deal fell through - he prayed for direction. And soon found himself going back to his first love - the church. Back in Evansville again, a buddy of Ash's told him about a job opening for worship director at United Methodist Church on the west side. He was hired later that evening. Eventually, Ash transferred to the Newburgh location, where he's spent the past three years in heaven, so to speak. "I won the worship leader lottery," he says, beaming from ear to ear. Happy at work and at home with a healthy relationship and kids he adores, Ash unexpectedly began waking up at night with melodies in his head. Those melodies evolved into songs that he introduced anonymously to the congregation during services. The feedback was immediate - and very positive. Soon, Nashville beckoned for one last go at making something happen. So with the blessing and financial help of the church, Ash recorded Saved By Love, an inspiring new EP (mixed by Steve Tyner of Black Cat Recording) that sums up all he's been through - and more importantly, where he's heading. "I've learned how to love people again, how to be patient. What really matters in life is God - from there, the good things in life start happening." Saved By Love is available at Amazon.com.

THE BLUES WITH BRAGIN

May's Featured Release: Grown Ass Woman By: Sharon Lewis & Texas Fire Chicago blues diva returns with blistering followup to 2011's critically-acclaimed The Real Deal

O

pening track, “Can’t Do It Like We Do," sets the tone by showcasing Lewis’s powerful vocals while she sings about the rich history of the Chicago blues scene. It also features excellent harmonica playing from the legendary Sugar Blue, whom many listeners might know from his harmonica playing on the Rolling Stones classic, “Miss You." “Hell Yeah!” gives the Chicago Horns a chance to shine, with Kenny Anderson playing trumpet and arranging the horn section. Hank Ford joins in on tenor saxophone and Jerry DiMuzio rounds out the group on the baritone saxophone. “Chicago Woman” tells the tale of a strong and independent woman. This song features a guest appearance by Joanna Connor whose masterful guitar playing complements the song very nicely. “They’re Lying,” a slower tune, deals with allegations of marital infidelity. This song contains excellent additions from Roosevelt Purifoy on piano, Steve Bramer on guitar and the Chicago Horns. “Old Man’s Baby” features Lewis discussing the ups and downs of searching for love. It also boasts a guest appearance by Steve Bell on harmonica. His solo in the middle of the song shines through brilliantly. “High Road," a song penned by Bramer about leaving a bad relationship, features the return of Sugar Blue on harmonica - an album highlight. Anyone who enjoys blues with a full and rich sound will want to check out this album. - Paul Bragin, WUEV Blues Producer For more info, visit facebook.com/sharonlewisbluesdiva/.

NEWS4U MAY 2017 | COMEDY

WES BEACH All kidding aside: Former Time Bomb singer getting serious about comedy in Chicago

"I've spent four years in Chicago so far, but it feels like it's gone by in the blink of an eye. I just feel so blessed to have been able to follow my dreams."

54 |

"I made funny videos as a kid with my parent's video camera, but I always wanted to take it to the next level - always wanted to do something more," explains Wes Beach, a Castle High School graduate now living up north in Chicago, home to such revered improv comedy havens as Second City, the Annoyance Theatre, MCL Chicago and iO Theater - all places where the 31-year-old has performed since moving to the Windy City in 2013. His decision to take the plunge and go for his dreams was a long time coming, but the life experiences that led up to the big leap proved quite valuable. After studying Radio & TV at USI and serving as an on-air intern at Kiss 106 for a brief spell, Beach found himself fronting Time Bomb, a Newburghbased pop-punk band circa mid-2000s that toured nationally. He helped to book the shows, learning the ins and outs of marketing and promotion in the process - skills that would come in handy down the road. But Time Bomb's career eventually diffused, and Beach switched allegiances to another rising local act, Gentlemen & Scholars, appearing as a vocalist on the band's well-received 2009 album, The Fault. But while the music was progressive, he felt stuck - in his life, anyway. "I started saving up money to move," Beach says. "Finally, in 2013 I drove up to Chicago and started taking writing classes at Second City the first week I arrived." He made fast friends with other aspiring comedy types, growing more comfortable with this new direction - and the city - each day. After performing a six-week run of a sketch show as part of the writing program, Beach and his

May 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

two partners went rogue, requesting to put on an independent production. "We worked on that for six months," he explains. "It went even better than the first sketch show and we made even more connections - and from there we decided to try our luck at the Annoyance Theatre." A more DIY, punk-rock sort of comedy venue, the Annoyance Theatre was made for Beach. Naturally, his first order of business was to put on a musical about the infamous Jimmy Hoffa, known for his ties to organized crime and mysterious disappearance in 1975. No joke, it was a hit. So Beach and his cohorts next looked to expand to a full, hour-long show at MCL Chicago, crafting another absurdly genius idea - "The Remarkably Garbage Life of Brendan Fraser." "It's the show that I'm the most proud of - he's wondering why he keeps going on because his career is so bad, and he keeps getting visited by different versions of himself from former movies," he explains. No comment from the Fraser camp, reportedly. Around this time, Beach's writing partner Shawn Bates had been asked to be a PA on the set at the iO; he tagged along, met the crew and discovered that they were in the market for intern producers. He was duly hired. "I started working on hilarious projects with people behind the scenes until I was able to write, direct, produce and edit for the iO Comedy Network," Beach says. And remember those days he spent hyping his bands? Now he's applying similar promotional tactics to bolster the network's social media presence, coming full circle in a sense. In fact, Beach has started his own company managing social media for area businesses - a day job to help keep the comedy dream alive. He's still learning, of course, but Beach hasn't regretted his decision to move for a second. "I've spent four years in Chicago so far, but it feels like it's gone by in the blink of an eye. I just feel so blessed to have been able to follow my dreams."

TRI-STATE FASHION with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie

Local musicians to raise money in style at the inaugural Evansville Battle of the Bands

I

"It is clear that Kyle and his band are very true to their own personal styles while on stage, which explains why their performances are so natural and great!"

t's finally here, SPRING! What better way to welcome the warmer weather than with outdoor events, galoshes, and floral patterns? I spoke with some of the tristate’s favorite musicians and participants in the inaugural Evansville Battle of the Bands charity event to learn more about their spring style on and off the stage. Kyle Paisley, of Kyle Paisley and the Print, stopped by Amerie Boutique to chat with me about Battle of the Bands and was eager to share more about his stage style, which is much like his personal style off stage. “It’s warm now, so it gets hot on stage. I like wearing my favorite band or music tanks on stage with shorts and my favorite shoes,” Kyle told me. It is clear that Kyle and his band are very true to their own personal styles while on stage, which explains why their performances are so natural and great!

You may know local musician Angel Rhodes not only from her smooth sound, but from her great fashion on and off the stage. You will catch Angel on stage wearing something trendy, yet unique and true to herself, no doubt! She likes to wear cute dresses or skirts and tanks or tees in this warm weather. It's obvious that representing herself through her look and with her music is important to Angel. You can vote for Angel as your favorite musician at the Battle of the Bands event! There are eight other musical acts who each display unique on-stage looks and represent what it truly means to have great personal style this spring! Remember to shop local, and don’t be afraid to get creative by using looks inspired by others but with your own personal touches added to make your own personal style stand out! Battle of the Bands for charity: May 13 at Carson’s Brewery Participating acts include: Calabash, Kyle Paisley and the Print, RapTure, Monte Skelton, Angel Rhodes, Moneka Fullop, Andy Brasher, The So Long Vinyls, and Eighty-Sixt Learn more at facebook.com/ameriellc or amerie.org.

M

ultiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that is caused by damage to myelin, the protective coating around nerves. The loss of myelin is accompanied by a disruption in the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain, which produces the various symptoms of MS. Symptoms vary widely and include blurred vision, weak limbs, tingling sensations, unsteadiness and fatigue. Living with MS is very unpredictable, and there is currently no cure for MS. SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

STING: Sting is a 3-year-old male German Shepherd/Lab mix. He’s a favorite among VHS staff and volunteers! Sting does well in the car, is easygoing, and loves all people he meets. You could have your own “celebrity” dog – he has visited both 99.5 WKDQ and Eyewitness News WEHT/WTVW for their weekly pet segments! (And somehow, after becoming a radio & television smash, he’s still waiting on a forever home. What’s up with that?) His $100 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and more!

GUSTAV: Gustav is a very handsome male cat who was found as a stray by a VHS staff member! He was never reclaimed, and has now been living large in the Cageless Cat Lounge. He’s very quiet and easygoing. He never makes much fuss and when he occasionally comes down from his kitty throne cat tree, he’s nothing but playful with the other cats. Staff estimate that he’s only about 2 years old. Take Gustav home neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated for only $30!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT MEGAN EARL & FINN

The recent Hillview hoarding case was just another example of how important the VHS and other such organizations are to the community. They stepped in and helped to rescue the many animals that were being kept in deplorable conditions and worked tirelessly to get them adopted out to loving homes. One of the Hillview cats, 8-year-old Buffett (now renamed 'Finn'), hit the pet lottery when Megan Earl visited the shelter in search of a new best friend for her family. "I brought my two-year-old son along and the staff informed me that Finn had never been around kids, but he did perfect," Earl says. She also has a four-year-old daughter at home; both kids had been showing an interest in the responsibility of pet ownership, so the time seemed right. Luckily for Finn, age was not a factor in their decision. "It didn't really bother us that a lot of the Hillview cats were seniors - Finn definitely doesn't act like he's 8-years-old," Earl says. "He acts just like a kitten and runs and jumps, loves to be cuddled and sit on your lap." And thankfully, apart from a cauilflower ear, Finn shows no ill effects from his prior living situation and really seems to enjoy all the attention he's getting. "He owns this house now," Earl says. Another successful adoption!

FLUFFER: Fluffer is the VHS’ longest bunny resident. He’s a 4-year-old male American mix with luxurious, soft gray fur. He has lived with another bunny for years (Oreo) and they can go home together, but they do not have to. Fluffer is already neutered (which means less territoriality!) and uses his litterbox very well at the shelter. He can go home TODAY in his cardboard carrier for only $30!

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

Can people of faith “believe” in science?

Faith and science have often been perceived as being in conflict. The classic conflict is seen in the very first story of the Bible. The old “creation versus evolution” argument is held up and the claim is made that you cannot be a Christian if you believe in creation. My response to that challenge is that the Bible is not a science book. In fact, science (as we know it) wasn’t even around when the Bible was being written. So, to claim that the Bible is against science is pretty hard to defend. The Bible didn’t even know what science was. When I recite the traditional creeds of the Church, I say “I believe in God…the Creator of heaven and earth.” Nowhere in scripture does anyone ever attempt to say how God did that. The classic story of Genesis (chapter 1) is that God spoke the creation into existence. Okay. If someone called a press conference tomorrow and conclusively proved every detail of the theory of evolution, it wouldn’t cause me to stop believing in God, nor would it prevent me from saying, “I believe in God…the Creator of heaven and earth.” Faith and science are both gifts of God. I suggest we enjoy them both.

NEWS4U MAY 2017 | LOCAL OPINION

THE WRITE STUFF with Jonathan Gluff

Questioning Ourselves (Or “The Importance of Being Introspective”) I love watching live music. For the most part, I can appreciate a good performance, regardless of the genre. But one experience in particular stuck out in my mind while writing this. I once saw a band take what I call the “kitchen sink” approach to music: Throw together as many disparate instruments and/or genres and see what comes out. This formula has occasionally worked in the past (see: Neutral Milk Hotel), but unfortunately, it didn’t for this merry bunch of budding hipster-wannabes. In this case, it seemed like they spent too much time gathering too much equipment and playing too often by themselves rather than as a band, let alone learning how to craft a coherent song. Because unfortunately, no amount of boutique, hand-made pedals can make up for the fact that you aren’t a cohesive, complementary unit. To paraphrase the great Jeff Goldblum (and I do hope the text translates the sarcasm there well), this band was too concerned with asking, “Can we?” and not concerned enough with asking, “Should we?” Questions they should’ve asked include, “Should we really add a wah pedal to a guitar/banjo hybrid?” “Should we really implement a pedalboard for a non-traditional instrument?” “Should we really mash

together reggae, bluegrass, folk, and indie like a musical Dr. Moreau?” Alas, they did not ask what should’ve been obvious questions, and they rambled on through one more-boring-thanusual retreading of a hippie jamfest after another, not unlike Dave Matthews crossed with Old Crow Medicine Show (yet somehow more aimless and boring). But of course this wouldn’t be like my regular opinion piece if I didn’t somehow tie this metaphor to the real world (even if I do mask it behind a thin veneer of snarky, semielitist skewering). So I ask that we all ask ourselves seemingly obvious questions, such as, “Why do so many of us hold double standards?” “Are we regularly questioning our leaders (politically and otherwise)?” “Are we really thinking for ourselves?” That’s not to say everything we know is wrong, nor am I advocating change just for change’s sake. But we as a society often seem to spend too much time mindlessly parroting the same ideologies over and over without asking why - or if - we ever actually believed them in the first place. We can’t be afraid to admit when we’re wrong, and we can’t stop asking ourselves what we truly believe.

WORDS FROM WHITNEY

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

Straight-Ticket Voting Option Needs to Be Abolished

For the boys: A short guide on how to maintain your dignity

Alright, ladies. This one is for you... in a sense, anyway. Guys, this is mostly for you. Observe your surroundings. Maybe you're in a coffee shop, but probably in a bar or at a party. Chances are, there's a solo woman or a pair of women sitting apart from the crowd. Speaking from personal experience, and the experiences of other women in my life, the situation usually turns from a comfortable ladies' night into a desperate battle against the frail male ego. Here we go, boys. This is a short guide on how to maintain your dignity... and also, how to not be a total douche. Sometimes, in this large and complicated world, there are these circumstances where women do not want to be approached and harassed by men. I know, I know. You may be feeling incredulous and flabbergasted and totally butt-hurt right now, but it will be okay. I promise. Here are some reasons why this completely unreasonable atrocity may occur. They just want to be left alone. Maybe they're decompressing from a bad day, perhaps they're internally mapping out their life goals while enjoying a latte or a beer. They may have gotten stood up for a date, or they're waiting for a date or friend to show up. If she needs

a knight in shining armor, most likely, she will ask you. In any case, I don't see any issue in saying hello. In this day and age, being social IRL is a treasure. But by saying hello, I mean... say hello, ask how she's doing, and if she's polite (and even if she's not) but doesn't perpetuate the conversation, go away. Seriously. No one in the world should feel obligated to massage your ego. Continuing to pester someone after they've expressed zero desire to speak to you is not only annoying and rude, it's harassment. There's no other word for it. On what planet is it attractive to keep throwing yourself at someone who's not interested? Just stop. You're embarrassing yourself. It's not cute or endearing. And if your next step is to insult the subject in question because she hurt your baby feelings or made you feel dumb by not indulging your obviously intoxicating prowess, just don't. A female is not "cold" or a "bitch" for wanting to be left alone. She doesn't owe you one single thing, and you're not doing anyone any favors. Signed, Whitney Patterson, a disinterested woman

Indiana is one of only 10 states that allows its residents to vote straight-ticket. In 2016, the state abolished straight party tickets for at-large races only. While this is a start, the fact of the matter is that Indiana needs to abolish the entire straight-ticket voting option. Let’s use Vanderburgh County as an example. The county had a total of 74,200 people cast their ballots in 2016. Of those who voted, 32,500 voted straight ticket. That’s roughly 44% of all voters. In races decided by a couple thousand votes or less, this could make a huge difference. Take the sad state of affairs involving former Knight Township Trustee Linda Durham. 2006 was a banner year electionwise for Democrats nationally. They recaptured both chambers of congress that year. For Durham, she only spent $5 to campaign for this seat. She won by 29 votes primarily with the help of straight party ticket voters. Sadly, Durham was accused of using the township’s credit card to purchase New Kids on the Block concert tickets, flowers, and movie tickets and eventually went to prison for these misdeeds. Indiana’s state representatives need to introduce a bill that will abolish this way of voting. It will be a great benefit to the state. LEGO BATMAN (PG)

WARNER ANIMATION GROUP

When I decided I was going to review two family films this month, I had originally planned to see one superhero movie with my little boy, and one princess movie my girl wanted to see. However, when it came time to see that enchanted fantasy film, my daughter said that she and her brother and everyone else in the world wanted to see Lego Batman instead. I had seen the first Lego Movie, of course. Though hilarious and cute, I didn’t think I’d want to sit through a sequel, much less a Batman-themed sequel. How much further could they possibly go with either of these ideas? I was wrong. As a Lego sequel, it doesn’t have the same charm. There is a reason for that, though. It’s a Batman movie. It’s a Batman parody, more precisely. So not only does this feature manage to take the core Batman elements and tragic storyline and simplify it into the most concentrated, pinpointed, and literalized Batman conflict-resolutions you will see, it also relentlessly pokes fun at it the whole time. There are numerous jokes at the expense of past films, and Will Arnett’s self-absorbed, loner-to-a-fault portrayal of the Dark Knight is hysterical. - Laura Engram

If there’s anything that this 23-year-old series was always lacking - apart from relatable dialogue - it was a truly strong and fleshed-out backstory. Before Saban’s Power Rangers, the deepest thing I understood about those technicolored superhero origins was that they had honed their unique fighting style through the extensive editing of stock-footage from a Japanese superhero show. Combined with unabashed capitalization on ‘90s ‘tude, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were unstoppable. That’s all we knew. So, for old and new fans alike, I believe origins are where this reboot digs in its heels and holds its own. Not being a fan myself, I'm a little surprised at the dearth of suited, battle-ready Power Ranger action in the movie. Also, the dialogue is only slightly less cheesy than in the series, so while the characters are decidedly more complex - real “teenagers with attitude” sporting tangible, even heartfelt problems - the campiness is still an enjoyable guilty pleasure if you like that sort of thing. And while the action sequences and related special effects feel somewhat subpar, stand-out performances for the Rangers, mentor Zordon, and especially the smolderingly wicked villain Rita Repulsa, make this a family flick you might want to check out. - Laura Engram

BUSH Black & White Rainbows Zuma Rock Records My most mind-boggling question after listening to Bush’s seventh studio album, Black & White Rainbows, is this: When did y’all become emo? Back when I actually was an emo kid and that scene was just coming into its own, there were all sorts of bands that didn’t want the label, but yes, I’d recognize that track-after-track moodiness anywhere. I can’t say this lengthy album doesn’t deliver some of the crunch and modulating growl we’ve come to expect from Bush, and I can’t say it isn’t developed. Yet, the lyrics all bewail similar allegorical tales of heartbreak that plainly do not speak to me. The steady, bending notes of the opening track prepare for something gritty and truthful. What you end up with is “every day you find ways to drive me crazy” cake pre-consumed by a wonderfully undulating symphonic sound that just doesn’t match the words. Songs like “Dystopia” and “Ravens” are more naked but creative, and hail back to Bush’s glory days, so there are some stand-outs. “People At War” has the most nuanced oomph to it, but you might fall asleep before reaching it. - Laura Engram

DEPECHE MODE Spirit Columbia Records While you have Bush’s lyrically bland album at one side, on the opposite end you have Depeche Mode’s melodically safe release, Spirit. And while the synthesized rhythm and humming waves drone on in typical Depeche Mode fashion, the music does accent some very serious ideas. Being that the group’s electronic sound often flirts with trance and other similar genres, long loyal fans will be both pleased and intrigued. The album wastes no time cutting straight through the fluff, diving straight into the issues and the listener’s core with “Going Backwards” and “Where’s the Revolution?” Alongside the slow pound of a piano, the dark-timbred words “armed with new technology… to a caveman mentality” really set the theme for everything that comes next. As the album continues, the blending of hypnotic techno with the syrupy sincerity of Dave Gahan becomes a pleasant soulful ride. The seething emotions that erupt in the latter half of the album in songs from “Cover Me” to “Poison Heart” are spirited strolls into both love and anguish. Finally, “Fail” depressively but thoughtfully ends the album: “People, how are we coping?” - Laura Engram

MASTODON Emperor of Sand Reprise Records As a huge fan of Mastodon’s Moby Dickinspired 2004 album Leviathan, I was so profoundly disappointed with 2006’s follow-up, Blood Mountain, that I haven’t given even a cursory listen to subsequent releases. I was hoping something would’ve changed in the ensuing 11 years, but unfortunately, not much has. Like Leviathan, Emperor of Sand starts out with a powerful opening salvo in “Sultan’s Curse” led by bassist Troy Sanders’ trademark gravel-throated delivery. Unfortunately, “Show Yourself” grinds the momentum to a halt with phoned-in (at least by Mastodon’s standards) riffing and some of the thinnest, weakest vocals I’ve heard the band record. Even drummer Brann Dailor’s characteristic frenetic stickwork feels a bit stilted here and a few other places throughout the album (although this may be due more to his increased vocal presence). Guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher’s calling card of downtuned, weaving melodic lines does remain fairly prevalent. “Roots Remain” and “Scorpion Breath” feature tightly executed riffing. The latter benefits from a guest vocal from Scott Kelly of Neurosis, a band whom Mastodon readily acknowledge as a key influence. But while the riffing is as finely-tuned as ever, the solos tend to be a little too noodly and self-indulgent. - Jonathan Gluff

FATHER JOHN MISTY Pure Comedy Sub Pop This may cost me credibility with the hip indie crowd, but until Pure Comedy, I had never listened to Father John Misty. And while I may not feel the need to give the rave review he jokingly asks for in “Leaving LA,” I will say it’s a well-crafted album worth a listen. “So I never learned to play the lead guitar/I always more preferred the speaking parts,” he sings on the aforementioned 13-minute track. This is a drastic understatement, as lyrics and singing are undoubtedly his strong suit. While the music is mainly sparse acoustic guitar, piano, and string arrangements, his voice sounds like a folkier - but nearly as powerful Elton John. (And to be clear, I very much mean that as a compliment.) And though it took him his whole life to learn the most fundamental guitar chord, he clearly learned to write. He tackles a variety of subjects - our obsession with technology and celebrity (“Total Entertainment Forever”), human nature and primal instincts (“Leaving LA,” “When the God of Love Returns There’ll Be Hell to Pay”), and yes, religion (which songs don’t mention religion?) - with mostly positive results. He occasionally veers toward maudlin cliché (especially in the opening title track), but the lyrics largely remain clever and irreverent. At the very least, he wrote the best marathon-length indie song since “Oh, Comely.” - Jonathan Gluff

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS Whiteout Conditions Dine Alone Music, Inc. This is probably fairly obvious to anyone familiar with music I review, but I don’t listen to a lot of music you could call “happy” or “fun.” The New Pornographers have consistently been an exception to that rule. They bring back their brand of synth-driven indie pop on Whiteout Conditions. Despite losing drummer Kurt Dahle and guitarist Dan Bejar (the latter whom is currently busy with side project Destroyer), the band hasn’t lost momentum. A fuzzy synthline carries leadoff track “Play Money,” but I can’t downplay the voice of the ever-consistent Neko Case. And while A. C. Newman’s ability to deftly craft one power-pop masterpiece after another is prevalent as ever on the entire album, her role can never be understated. Dancy synths kick off each of the opening trio of tracks, culminating with the album’s first single, “High Ticket Attractions.” A back-and-forth vocal by Newman and keyboardist Kathryn Calder forms the backbone of the song, accentuated with an arpeggiated banjo-like synth melody. And not to be outdone by digital instrumentation, new drummer Joe Seiders opens the succeeding track, the sardonic “This Is the World of the Theater,” alongside a twisting, bending guitar line. There isn’t a bad moment on the album. Perhaps the current crop of electronic-tinged pop acts (*cough, cough* Chainsmokers, 21 Pilots *cough, cough) could learn a lesson from these elder statesman. - Jonathan Gluff

TIMOTHY MICHAEL ASH Saved By Love Self-Released As someone who grew up playing in various gospel/worship bands from the ages of nine to my late teens, so much contemporary Christian worship music sounds similar to my ears. There's a formula that many artists of the genre adhere to - a sort of music-bynumbers that results in a lot of bland material being released every year, similar to the often generic feel of contemporary country (as dictated by the powers that be in Nashville). Thankfully, this is not the case with Timothy Michael Ash's new EP, Saved By Love. Two powerful tracks kick things off, “Irresistible” and “Hold On to Jesus," each full of heartfelt lyrics and insistent melodies - and Ash's instantly recognizable country-tinged delivery (he doesn't just look like Jason Aldean, he sounds a little like him, too). Just as impressive, "Love Is the Greatest Thing" and "Change the World" are pure inspiration, directing listeners to rise above the noise of today's world and work towards a better future, to open our hearts and let the Spirit in. But the title track is the star of the show here, a driving acoustic number that gives way to an electriccharged, 90's-era chorus with a simple message: "Give us a heart that burns for you / Give us a song to sing brand new." - Johnny Fletcher

TOKIO HOTEL Dream Machine Starwatch Music If you’ve never heard of German rock band Tokio Hotel, no worries. Their fourth English language studio release, Dream Machine, takes the band in a somewhat different musical direction. While previous albums were heavily guitar-driven, containing beautifully gnarled alternative ballads accentuated by Bill Kaulitz’s sweet and sultry wails, the sound here largely diverges into poppy electronica. The group acknowledges this with the artful, touch-and-go revving between piano and synth in the impassioned opening track, “Something New,” before transitioning into the full-on jive that ends the song. The way they continue to tighten their sound as they explore this new arena works well for them. Kaulitz’s gorgeous croon lends itself especially well to the mix of dance pop and slow-serenading synth. In the funky single “What If” the lyrics are simple and somewhat cliché, but the groove whomped out by the bass line leads into the occasional blast of horns that will make your body move. “As Young as We Are” and “Stop Babe” and many other offerings here outline Tokio Hotel as broadly inventive artists, drawing from a variety of influences, and never nailed down.. - Laura Engram

MOUNT EERIE A Crow Looked At Me P.W. Elverum & Sun This will probably be the only 5-star review where I will advise not to listen to the album if you aren’t entirely prepared. While A Crow Looked At Me is basically a somber indie artist plucking out acoustic notes both purposefully and delicately, the subject matter is specifically grim and real. “When real death enters the house all poetry is done. When I walk into the room… All fails.” Those starting words in “Real Death” offer every bit of explanation and foreboding necessary as to why this work should be approached with considerable care. If you’ve ever lost someone deeply close to you, Phil Elverum’s pained whispers - his matterof-fact narration of personal heartache and keeping on - may tear at you. It did me. This project evolved as a journal, Elverum’s dayby-day time and struggle elapsing after his wife died of cancer, departing him and their young daughter. The music is wordy and unassuming, as if we are there, living within that thick atmosphere of memories, simply breathing and holding his hand as he goes for walks, pays bills, discards trash, and just keeps moving. - Laura Engram Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2017

MAY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 9 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. Breckenridge Brewery Agave Wheat

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

This wheat ale pours a murky light yellow color with an over-active two inch off-white, quickly fading head and pretty much no lacing. This is quite typical of a wheat ale. The aroma is light malts, wheat and a refreshingly different fruitiness. I have to assume that to be the agave. The taste is mostly wheat and light malts. Unfortunately, the fruitiness that comes through in the aroma doesn't make it to the taste. If you’re a wheat ale lover you’ll probably like it but most likely not love it.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head tops this cloudy, golden wheat beer after pouring it into a wheat beer glass. The fruity notes from the agave used in the brewing process dominate the nose. The agave flavor waits for a second before hitting the tongue, but stays before the finish gives more wheat flavor. The beer's light and crisp flavor and low alcohol content make it a great choice for summer. Pair it with light dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer has a nice cloudy yellow color to it. It has the standard fruity unfiltered wheat flavor with a touch of grapefruit, also. This would be a great summer beer with its clean finish. I would actually suggest putting a slice of lemon in it.

Blue Point Hoptical Illusion

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

With a pretty copper color and frothy, cream-colored head with lots of lacing, this brew gets my attention. The nose is a mix of citrus, hops and malts. The flavor is big with a dominate, hoppy, malt balanced, earthy and complex taste experience. I drank this one slowly, thus the final swallows were almost room temp. It’s enjoyable that way. I feel that speaks well for any beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thin white head forms on this India Pale Ale after pouring it into a beer mug, but the head quickly dissipates. A good amount of hop presence controls the scent profile. The hop presence continues to build up steadily while drinking the beer. People who enjoy hoppy beers will definitely want to give this beer a chance. It could pair well on a summer day with a hamburger, spicy cuisines or cheeses like cheddar and Gouda.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear amber-colored beer. It says it's an east coast IPA, but I wouldn’t really put it in that category. It does have a light hop flavor but it's really not what I think of in terms of an IPA; however, it does have some bitterness. Still, it lacks any strong flavors. I'm impressed with the 7% ABV but that's about it.

Lagunitas The Waldos' Special Ale

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4.5

Waldos’ pours up an attractive, slightly hazy honey-yellow color and delivers a short-lived one finger off white head with plenty of lacing. It's aromatic and fragrant with sweet maltiness, herbs, citrus zest, tropical fruits, light hops, some dankness and alcohol. The taste is much like the aroma and makes one even more aware of the high 11.9% ABV of this brew. A sipping drink for sure - or share it with a friend. It really is special.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.25

A thick white head tops this amber ale and stays for a long time. A generous amount of pine and citrus notes from the hops envelops the nose. Malt flavors hit the tongue first while drinking the beer, followed by a return of the hops and some spice notes in the long finish. This yearly limited release boasts more than 100 IBUs, so aficionados of hoppy beers will want to try this while it’s available.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

This is a hazy amber beer. I notice a little alcohol feel in the flavor but then again it has an 11.9 % ABV so that makes sense. I like the hopped up flavors, and the beer is actually very smooth. I can’t remember when I've had a beer with this high of an ABV that was this good. Sometimes you sacrifice flavor in that regard but not with this one.

Saugatuck Brewing Starburst Wheat

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

Saugatuck Brewing promotes this one as a hoppy wheat beer. It pours a subdued gold orange color with more clarity than I’m a accustomed to seeing in a wheat beer and a big, bubbly off-white head. There’s a light amount of lacing as well. The nose is mostly wheat, with a bit of citrus and a faint

hoppiness. The taste presents a definite wheat foundation with adequate citrus hops and a very clean finish. At times it reminds me just a little of a Belgian ale. No doubt the wheat and hops play into that. Overall, I’m not totally sold but find it more attractive than most beers/ales in this genre.

closely by hops, with the two flavors going back and forth in the finish. Hopheads and wheat beer lovers both might want to try this year round offering. Pair it with a good sandwich.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

This beer is a clear amber color with good carbonation. I like the light wheat flavor and the hopped up flavor - I would consider this more of an IPA than the Hoptical Illusion. Plus, it has a good finish. I had never heard of this beer, but it's a pretty solid offering.

A thick white head forms on top of the beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. A noticeable hop presence fills the nose rather than the usual wheat scent. The wheat flavor comes with the first sip of the beer, followed

Blue Point Toasted Lager

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

Blue Point calls this brew an American amber lager. It pours up clear and pretty with a rich copper color and one finger light beige head that sticks around a long time. The aroma is mostly of caramel-like lightly toasted malts. The taste mimics the nose in a good kind of way and has a nice, ever-so-slightly bitter finish. I’m not usually that fond of Lagers but find this one pretty nice for my taste. Give it a try. You’ll likely be glad you did.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head crowns this lager and never completely evaporates. Toasted malt scents fill out the smell. The malt remains with the first sip of the beer, followed by a slight kick from the hops before the malt comes back in the finish. This could convert novices into craft beer lovers. This flagship offering from Blue Point pairs well with fresh seafood, but could match nicely with just about any dish served.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is also a clear amber color, and I like the sweet malt flavor due to the toasting. I would consider this a nice session beer, your average lager - a Sam Adams type but just a little different. Nothing real flashy with this beer but if you are looking to try something else in this category, this one is not bad.

Short's Brewing Prolonged Enjoyment

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3

Here’s a 3.7% ABV session IPA. That’s really low! Short’s is an exceptional brewery. How’d they do here? Prolonged Enjoyment is a Session IPA brewed with Amarillo, Simcoe and Citra hops. It pours up cloudy and amber in color with golden highlights. There’s a lot of off-white head that quickly disappears. No lacing, as one might expect with this low of an ABV. The nose is light with mostly citrus-like hops and some malt. The taste leads with light hops like the aroma and finishes with an undeniable but not over the top hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is on the watery side. Overall, considering the ABV, I feel they did pretty well with this one and would never turn one down. You decide.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on top of a strawcolored India Pale Ale. The familiar smells of pine and citrus from the hops reach the nose before attempting to inhale the aroma of the beer. The flavors seem subdued at first, but the hops return forcefully during the long finish. Hop lovers will want to try this. The lower alcohol content makes it a great summer beer. Pair it with spicy food.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a hazy straw-colored beer. I'm not really taken by it. Yes, it's an IPA but it has a funky finish to it that I don't care for. This beer just reminds me that you can blast a beer with a bunch of hops and bottle it and be done. I just don't think it has any real character to it.

WALTER THE WINE GUY With summer approaching, it’s time to think “Patio Pounder” wines

T

hings are heating up and I have a few wines to have ready for that ice bucket! As many of you that read this column know, my favorite summer wine is any Rosé. So, I would like to tell you that we are having a Rosé sale in all of our Liquor Locker stores! If you buy three bottles, you get 10% off! So, stock up and be prepared for summer! Another suggestion for those who want a wine to sit on the patio and sip cold is Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio. It’s a light, slightly fruity wine that works well when it's hot outside and you need a COLD drink. This wine works well with light foods and cheeses, but it's also a very good thirst quencher! Another suggestion for the hot weather is Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc. It's reasonably priced for a Napa Valley wine and a great value for the flavor it delivers. This wine is bright and crisp, and plays well with food. I love its wonderful citrus notes, without the aggressive “grapefruit” notes that some Sauvignon Blancs have. For the “Red Wine Drinker” that refuses to drink white wine, try a slightly chilled Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is a grape that normally is low in tannins, that drying

These usually have a more fruit forward flavor profile. If you want to try one, I recommend Alias California Pinot Noir. It’s inexpensive and delivers a lot of flavor for a low price. If you are grilling out, I suggest Motto Unabashed Zinfandel. This is the wine for those BBQ ribs! It’s nice rich flavor works with the sweet, spicy BBQ we usually eat in the summer months. It's low in tannins and has a deep spicy fruitiness that just works with BBQ. My last suggestion is for the person who likes a little sweetness with their wine. My favorite is San Giulio Moscato. It's sweet and fruity, but not too much definitely a crowd pleaser! Get this cold and enjoy it. Its slight fizz will be great in the heat of summer. That's all I have for this month. I hope your yard doesn’t work you too hard and hold up a glass of wine for me! Until next month, Walt
