vansville’s pro hockey team will strap on their skates for the 2014-2015 season when the IceMen open against the Gwinnett Gladiators at the Ford Center on October 18. Bring your cowbell and support the home team through every drop of the puck, penalty and power play. The IceMen’s new head coach Dwight Mullins promises an exciting brand of hockey with fast pace and physicality. “We love to have a team that plays a pressure game,” he says. “It’s an important year for our organization to have success” as the IceMen strive for the playoffs and the ECHL Kelly Cup. Growing up in Western Canada, Mullins was drafted by the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars and spent four seasons playing minor league hockey. As a former competitor, coaching is the closest thing to being back on the ice. Mullins enjoys battling with the players, refueling his passion for the game and meeting the everyday challenges in his new role as head coach for the IceMen. Though he credits Evansville’s organization for “doing a great job recruiting players,” Mullins deserves respect as a coach in his own right. Under Mullins’ leadership, the Elmira Jackals qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs and defeated Evansville seven of nine times in the past two years. 6 | October 2014 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Mullins confides that smart coaches “formulate a team plan to be successful against those teams [such as Evansville],” and he will have plenty of tricks up his jersey-sleeve when it comes to turning the tables. This season, the IceMen face two in-state rivals—the Fort Wayne Komets and the Indianapolis Fuel. The team plans to freeze the Indianapolis Fuel in their ten match-ups, with six glacial meetings at the Ford Center. “Based on the number of games we play each other, there are a lot of competitive juices,” says Mullins. “It’s fun for the fans to have an identifiable opponent.” For the loyal supporters who stick with the team, promotional events and giveaways are in store, including the 4th Annual Education Day, slated for a special start time of 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5. Mullins notes that a morning game may be “out of the norm for our organization,” but there’s a good reason for the wake-up call: the IceMen invite students from surrounding school districts to experience live hockey. “It’s a loud and exciting atmosphere with kids,” he says. Other rink-side theme nights include Super Heroes Night on Saturday, October 25 vs. Indianapolis, the New Year’s Eve match-up against Toledo on Wednesday, December 31 with post-game fireworks and Star Wars night on Saturday, January 17 vs. Cincinnati. All total, the IceMen slide into the Ford Center on twelve Saturdays, the most of any season thus far. All games start at 7:15 p.m. except for Sunday nights which begin at 5:00 p.m. – Jaimie Humbert Evansville IceMen season tickets are now on sale. B

efore Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, there was Judas Priest. The success of metal’s “Big Four” is in no small part due to the groundwork laid by the British rockers back in the mid to late 70s. Driven by the octave-defying wail of Rob Halford and fierce riffing of twin lead guitarists K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, the band released its first album in 1974, beginning a long and wildly unpredictable musical journey marked by multiple line-up changes. Priest hit big at the turn of the 80s with a more concise sound. Tracks like “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight” packed a more controlled punch, providing a blueprint for the next wave of metal. Halford departed in 1991 but rejoined in 2003, resulting in the excellent Angel of Retribution, followed by 2008’s ambitious concept album, Nostradamus. Six years later, the band is back with Redeemer of Souls, a throwback to classic Priest. Heads will bang when the band arrives at the Ford Center on October 22. Original member and bassist Ian Hill kindly spoke with News4U about the new album and the upcoming show. News4U (N4U): It’s been six years since the release of Nostradamus. Was the band writing the whole time? Ian Hill (IH): Well, after Nostradamus, we did the British Steel Tour and then the Epitaph Tour in 2011. After that, we all started to write. K.K. left in the meantime – decided to retire – and we took on Richie Faulkner in his place. We had a hell of a lot of material. The only reason that the extra tracks (released as a bonus mini-album with the CD) were left off the album is because they would have interrupted the flow and balance of fast and slow, heavy tracks. N4U: Redeemer of Souls retains the classic Priest sound yet doesn’t feel out of time at all. IH: With the writing process, we tried to get a little flavor of everything that we’ve done over the years – a mix of the fast and the heavy stuff and the lighter, commercial stuff as well. We really wanted to cover all the bases. You can use modern recording techniques and modern sounds and aim for the

contemporary metal sound, but I have to say that we’re at our best when we just do things on our own and stay true to what made us great. N4U: Was there any particular song or moment during the writing process that signaled that the band was on to something really special? IH: Well, it was just obvious that all the songs we were working on were complete songs, really. Rob was putting lyrics to different chord sequences presented – then I got a copy of that and so did Scott (Travis). I put my bass lines to it and he put his drum patterns to it. And it was all good. It wasn’t like one particular track was brilliant – it was all great; so much so that we couldn’t leave anything off (laughs). N4U: Judas Priest is known for spectacular stage shows, particularly Rob Halford’s entrance. Can you tell us anything about what to expect on this tour or is it under wraps? IH: It’s kind of under wraps at the moment. We don’t want to ruin the surprise when it comes. It’ll be typical Priest, though. As far as the music, the live set will feature songs from the new album as well as a few tracks that we haven’t played in a long time; and the classics, of course. We’ve really enjoyed rehearsals the last two weeks – we’ve had a blast working on the set together. It’s going to be good. – Thomas Ellis Special guest is Steel Panther. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7: 30 p.m. For ticket information, visit thefordcenter.com.

et ready to hear the music of the Rolling Stones in an entirely new way. One of the best orchestras in America is teaming with one of the most acclaimed tribute acts in the world to present “Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Symphony Show” on October 25 and 26 at the Victory Theatre. In production since 2001, “Satisfaction” captures both the look and the sound of the legendary band with flawless interpretations of rock’s greatest songs, including “Paint It Black,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Gimme Shelter” and, of course, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The show has received accolades from the likes of Martin Scorcese, director of the Stones documentary, Shine a Light, and been approved by Mick and Keith for a partnership with Walt Disney. In 2010, the production went symphonic, joining forces with orchestras to put a whole new spin on the Stones. The reception to the new, musically-enhanced production has been fantastic, and you’ll see (and hear) why when the Evansville Philharmonic and “Satisfaction” come together at the Victory. Chris LeGrand, star and executive producer of the show, kindly spoke with News4U about the origins of “Satisfaction” and the transition to performing with an orchestra. News4U (N4U): “Satisfaction” has been touring for a long time. How did the idea first come about? Chris LeGrand (CL): Growing up, people used to always compare me to Mick Jagger – this was back when I was trying to write my own songs and be in bands. Back then, there really wasn’t much of a tribute industry apart from Elvis impersonators and a few Beatles acts. After years of trying to do my own music, I just got frustrated with the music business in general and got out of it for about 10 years – raised a family, etc. Eventually, I started dabbling in music again and doing some cover songs. Then one day I saw a really highend Beatles show that came through my town and a light bulb went off in my head. I got online to see if there were any Rolling Stones tribute shows out there and only found a couple in New York and LA – but nobody that had a touring show. It seemed like a great opportunity to put together a project. Of course, it took a long journey to get to where we are today.

12 | October 2014

N4U: The band’s representation of the Rolling Stones music is spot-on. How difficult was it to put together the right combination of players? CL: It’s kind of like assembling a sports team. When you’re a new franchise, you start off with whatever you can get. Over the years, you trade up and trade down. It’s a long ways from being a new franchise to having a World Series team. You don’t come out the first year and win the championship. It took years and years to find the best line-up. Doors really opened up for us in 2005 when we got invited to go out to Las Vegas and be in a show for six months. We got more of a profile and started attracting better quality performers – people started coming to us. N4U: What made you decide to start performing “Satisfaction” with an orchestra? CL: I saw some big artists like Metallica and Kiss – even people like Michael Bolton – performing with symphonies, and it just seemed like it would be pretty cool to combine our show with an orchestra. So, we picked about 15 or 16 songs that we felt would translate well – there were obvious choices. We’ve done about 25 of these symphony shows so far, and it’s really getting going now. –Thomas Ellis Performance times: 10/25 (7 p.m.), 10/26, (2 p.m.). hen veteran comic Ron White takes the stage, he has but one goal in mind: “beat the (bleep) out of the audience.” The cigar-smoking, tequila-drinking, former Blue Collar Comedy Tour member has been killing crowds for 27 years, performing over 11,000 shows. In the process, he’s left people all over the world exhausted from the physical act of laughing. Simply, White says, “you feel it in your face; you feel it in your stomach.” On October 17, he returns to the Victory Theatre with his new stand-up show, Nutcracker – and every intention of treating Evansville as his personal punching bag. White kindly spoke with News4U about his Blue Collar days and commanding stage presence. News4U (N4U): You are famous for drinking and smoking on stage. If you got in shape and cut out the cigars and liquor, would that impact your career – would people view your comedy differently? Ron White (RW): I don’t know. There’s a really slim chance that that will ever happen. I’ve been a life-long smoker and drinker, and I’m going to run out the clock like this. Now, I did switch from scotch to tequila. My brother-in-law and I own this brand of tequila – it’s called Number Juan. We believe it to be the finest sipping liquor in the world. Anyhow, I think as long as your act is not just about one thing, you’re ok. For instance, John Pinette’s (R.I.P.) whole act was one long fat joke. It was beautifully done, but that’s what it was. Now, you can’t get skinny and do that act anymore. N4U: What’s your M.O. in terms of preparing for a show? Do you have the set memorized or do you use notes, etc.? RW: I generally don’t use too many notes, because I’ve got thousands of people that have paid to see me, and

I’m going to put on a show. To do that, you need to have a plan. The main reason why I do so many shows every year is that you have to do that to stay sharp. You have to have all this information floating at the top. My brain is like a cross between a lazy Susan and a colander – it turns slow and it leaks. N4U: As opposed to, say, Dane Cook, who prowls around the stage and makes a big commotion, you stand almost stock-still the whole time. RW: I think it’s easier to kill from that position, because if you do something subtle, people will notice it. If you’re moving around a lot, they won’t see it. From a position of being still, I can literally shift my weight from one foot to the other foot and get a laugh. You can convey so many different emotions without having to say anything. N4U: You were a big part of the hugely successful Blue Collar Comedy Tour in the early 2000s. What was the aftermath of the tour like – was it daunting to go back out on your own after that? RW: It wasn’t daunting at all, because that’s what I was used to – to headlining my own shows. I loved the Blue Collar Tour, and I loved my job – it was exactly what I should have been doing at the time that I was doing it. But I would always rather do my own show. That’s just my makeup. The first show that I put on after the tour ended was a 1000 seat room in Minneapolis, and it sold-out in two minutes. So, then five more shows were put on sale, and those sold-out the next day. Once the success happened, it propelled me to places I never thought I would go. – Thomas Ellis The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information (including the “200 Proof” VIP Experience Package), visit victorytheatre.com.

Lamasco Bar & Grill

1331 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 812-437-0171 Lamascobarandgrill.com or find them on Facebook Smothered French Fries Lamasco Bar and Grill on Franklin Street prides itself on offering the best. Whether that is food, drinks or live music, people expect something special when they come to this landmark on the west side of Evansville. The smothered French fries at Lamasco’s are truly a sight to behold. A generous pile of piping hot fries fills the plate and serves as a bed for a combination of Monterrey Jack and Cheddar cheeses that are melted to the perfect consistency. The dish is finished with an abundance of bacon bits that add another level of flavor to the dish with the fat and salt from the bacon counteracting the creaminess of the cheese. The side of ranch dressing that comes with the fries offers another layer of decadence to a dish that is already excellent. Your conscience will tell you to share this dish, but your tongue and fork might not let you.

Hagedorn’s Tavern 2037 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 812-423-0794 Find them on Facebook Frog Legs Hagedorn’s Tavern on Franklin Street has never been one to shy away from offering unique dishes, such as their famous brain sandwich. This tradition continues with the appetizer menu which features Hagedorn’s famous frog legs. A little patience is required since they are made to order (served fresh out of the deep fryer), but the wait is more than worth it. The outside is crispy, crunchy and delicious like a great piece of fried chicken. The meat on the inside stays tender and juicy. The frog legs come in two varieties: original and Cajun. The Cajun variety offers a hint of heat and spice that adds great flavor to the dish, but the heat remains mild enough that you won’t feel like your mouth is on fire. A variety of sauces are available with the frog legs, but this dish is good enough to stand on its own.

Gerst Haus

2100 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 812-424-1420 Gersthausevansville.com or find them on Facebook Cheese Dip & Kraut Balls The Gerst Haus on Franklin Street has long been a place to experience a little slice of Evansville’s Volksfest all year long. Between the extensive beer selection and authentic German music playing over the speakers, the Gerst Haus is a place where German culture thrives in Evansville. The cheese dip and kraut balls they serve are an essential part of that culture. The cheese dip features melted cheese, ground beef and peppers for an added kick of spiciness. The dip is served with a huge basket of chips for dipping that will provide enough for an entire table to enjoy them. The kraut balls showcase a combination of sauerkraut, cream cheese and a blend of herbs and spices. The balls are covered in flour, fried until golden brown and served with horseradish sauce. Pair it with an authentic German beer like Spaten or Paulaner for a taste of the old country.

Koodie Hoo’s

231 W. 2nd St. Mt. Vernon, IN 812-838-5202 Texas Tornado While most restaurants often target a specific kind of clientele, Koodie Hoo’s has embraced its diverse community, creating an environment where you’ll find farmer dining next to pharmacist. Much like the diverse patrons, Koodie Hoo’s Texas Tornado is an appetizer that blends varying textures, flavors and colors. Described as a “Tower of Ribbon Potatoes,” this culinary delight starts with hand-cut and fresh-fried potatoes before melted cheese, green onion, black olives, fresh tomato, and homemade chili are added atop (sour cream, guacamole, and salsa can be added too). The warm, fried potato ribbons, creamy cheese and smoky chili provide a perfect backdrop to highlight the crisp green onions and rich, tangy tomatoes (both bought from a local farmer) and the brininess of black olives. Koodie Hoo’s has created a winner in the Texas Tornado, so the next time your stomach begins nagging you for a refill, I suggest you do what many of your ancestors did and Go West Young Man!

Evansville, IN 812-475-9320 Acropolisevv.com or find them on Facebook Greek Nachos Serving the tri-state with authentic Mediterranean and traditional American dishes for many years, Acropolis has a comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere and a delectable menu to match. Owner and chef, Doros Hadjisavva, a Cyprus native, never intended to put down roots here, but we are glad he did. He always puts a smile on the face of any patron who enters and, most importantly, is a wizard in the kitchen. On our last visit, we were served Greek Nachos, which would give any Mexican nachos a run for their money. A specifically Greek variation on a commonly beloved appetizer, these nachos are piled high with tender lamb and beef gyros, bell peppers, onions, a special Greek nacho cheese and sour cream. The most notable ingredient is the nacho cheese, a smooth, creamy concoction with a recognizably Greek zing. Paired with gyros, this colorful and festive dish is not something you will find anywhere else. Opa!

Cavanaugh's

421 NW Riverside Dr, Evansville, IN 812-433-4333 Tropevansville.com or find them on Facebook Pan Seared Crab Cakes Situated inside Evansville's Tropicana Casino on the Ohio River, Cavanaugh's is a fine dining experience that shouldn't be missed. Known for their impeccable service, amazing ambiance, and visually stunning dishes and atmosphere, the restaurant boasts great steaks and fresh seafood. The latter was proven by the Pan Seared Crab Cakes we were served on our visit. The presentation alone was perfect, maybe even better than what one would expect in such a luxurious establishment. The searing of the dish, which consists of fresh jumbo lump crab meat, spices, and vegetables, left the breaded outsides with a delicious, slight crunch. It was served with two distinct sauces, a creamy mustard and herbed remoulade, both of which brought out the flavor of the fresh crab without overpowering. Although known mostly for their steak, Cavanaugh’s has really hit the mark with this incomparable appetizer in both presentation and taste. It’s the perfect starter.

Breakfast Omelette, Casserole and Cornbread Salad Coffee Cottage has been serving up delicious specialty drinks and food on Weinbach Avenue (by UE) for over ten years. As a locally-owned, neighborhood business, it has gained a loyal following of customers who appreciate the service and attention to detail often found at a smaller operation. People love their individually made espresso drinks and the many brews of coffee available each day. But they also go to the Cottage for food. We were treated to three of the best items on the menu. 1) Breakfast Omelette: huge and loaded with meats (oh, that crispy bacon), red and green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese – so fresh and not greasy. 2) Casserole: single serving or family style, layered with cornbread crust and filled with sweet pulled-pork BBQ, baked beans and potato chips – such a classic homestyle taste, pure southern Indiana. 3) Corn Bread Salad: a light texture with a sweet, mellow taste and beans in the mix – a perfect side dish or starter.

So, if you haven’t made your way out to Newburgh in a while, it’s time to check out Fiesta Acapulco. The drink specials alone should be enough to draw you out (the lime margaritas are a definite highlight and they have many other flavors, too), but if not, come for the Mexican guacamole. Actually, they pair so well that it’s really not right to get the guacamole without the margarita. Regardless, Acapulco’s guacamole is the real deal – chunky and colorful, a little spicy but light and refreshing with just the perfect amount of everything (avocado, cilantro, onion and jalapeno). Best of all, the aroma is sweet and enticing. We just couldn’t wait to dip in a fresh, warm chip – many chips, in truth. You can just about make a meal out of this delicious appetizer, but don’t miss out on Acapulco’s main menu!

This unique appetizer is like a piece of fine art: Pepperoni, real cheese and green onions are combined with Old Chicago’s signature dough. The combo is hand-rolled, then baked to a perfect golden brown. Served with Old Chicago’s classic pizza sauce, this dish is sure to please. Next up is the Italian Nachos, a beautifully crafted pub favorite with a chi-town twist. Old Chicago begins with light, crispy house-made pasta chips, which are topped with real cheeses (mozzarella, provolone, pepper jack and Asiago), pepperoni, Italian sausage and pepperoncini. Old Chicago also includes their one-of-a-kind house-made spicy marinara sauce for dipping. Eccellente! The third course is Old Chicago’s famous Cheese Garlic Bread. Old Chicago’s unique take on this appetizer menu staple serves to perfectly balance out the Chi-Town Trio. Freshbaked Ciabatta garlic bread is topped with mozzarella and provolone cheese, which is then drizzled with the perfect amount of fresh basil oil.

Evansville, IN 812-423-7272 Papajohns.com or find them on Facebook Papa’s Wings Papa John’s knows pizza; everybody knows that. It’s been 30 years since the first “store” – really not much more than a closet with an oven – opened up, and the rest is history. For the last three decades, Papa John’s has continued to perfect the art of making delicious pizza for a very, very reasonable price. The PJ hand-tossed dough, fresh cheeses and many topping choices are the signatures of this pizza franchise, but you can also bank on a great taste and high quality ingredients even if you stray from the main attractions. One example is Papa’s Wings which come four different ways: hot, BBQ, honey chipotle or un-sauced. We loved them all but particularly enjoyed the hot (a smoldering heat, spicy but not flaming) and honey chipotle (smoky and sweet with just enough heat to make it interesting) wings. Best of all, Papa’s Wings are loaded with sauce and there’s plenty of chicken on the bone. Pre-game your next meal with this great appetizer – perfect for football season.

T

“Thrive Tour” at the Ford Center

he biggest name in Christian music returns to Evansville on October 30. With a devoted following that continues to grow every year, Casting Crowns have virtually owned the genre for the last decade, repeatedly charting at the top for weeks at a time. Massive hits such as “Voice of Truth,” “East to West” and “Lifesong” have become inspiring anthems for the troubled and downtrodden, providing a sense of togetherness, a connection to the outside world. That universal need for connection was the catalyst for Casting Crowns to form, and it’s what still drives them today. In support of their excellent new album, Thrive, the band – along with special guests Mandisa and Sidewalk Prophets – will “run a lap” with the fans at the Ford Center on October 30. Singer Mark Hall kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the show. News4U (N4U): You performed at the Old National Events Plaza (formerly the Centre) in 2013. 18 months later, you’ve upgraded to the 9,000 seat Ford Center. Mark Hall (MH): Whoa! You know, I hope we don’t get there this time and go ‘we probably should have stayed back at that other building’ (laughs). My wife Melanie is the tour manager; I sit in an office in a church – I’m the youth pastor. I don’t know how all that booking stuff works. I’m joyfully ignorant. Melanie just tells me ‘pack for cold’ or ‘pack for hot’. I do know that we want to see as many people as we can, because we may not get back through this area for a while. N4U: Lyrically, your songs always seem to resonate with regular people. MH: All the songs that we do are just about what’s going on with the families at our church. I’m just writing about

26 | October 2014

what’s happening. It just so happens that that’s kind of what’s happening in every family. My goal right now is that I just want to be the world’s youth pastor. The way I see it, you’re running your race and that night of the concert the Crowns are going to roll in, and we’re going to run a lap with you. We’re just going to talk about life, ask some questions and let you know that we’re a bunch of dorks, too. N4U: The Casting Crowns sound has certainly evolved. Is it important for you to be contemporary? MH: For me, the lyric and what I’m saying is the reason that I’m getting up in the morning. What I want to make sure is that the music doesn’t run away with the song which can happen very easily. So, I try to frame a song to where it’s just a plate that the truth is served on. At the same time, I’m always growing musically, always changing and hearing different styles. I always want to be creative and try new things. N4U: You’re in an enviable position with a hugely popular back catalogue and a great new album. What’s your approach for the current tour in terms of mixing the old with the new? MH: Most people that come to a Crowns concert have one or two songs that are a really big deal to them. So, we can’t be so into our new selves that we forget why people are coming. We are not going to do a concert and not do “Praise You in this Storm,” “East to West” or “Voice of Truth” – those songs are going to happen. But we will play about five or six new songs – probably 22 songs all together. We’ll connect new songs with old songs that follow a similar thread and create a nice flow. – Thomas Ellis The show starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information, visit thefordcenter.com and castingcrowns.com.

What’ ' s Cookin’‘

El Maguey Grill 3225 Warrick Dr, Boonville, IN 47601 812-897-6666

W

ith Mexican restaurants scattered all over the Midwest, it may seem like most are interchangeable. We may walk in expecting the vibrant murals, carved booths, tiled floors, traditional music and servers who, inexplicably, can carry plates from their hands to their shoulders. Then we sit down and dig into the complimentary chips and salsa, typically ordering the same plates we did last time. So what’s different about El Maguey? “I wanted to have a Mexican restaurant where people could go even if they don’t like Mexican,” owner Gustavo Lopez says. “They go with their families and say ‘oh, I don’t like Mexican,’ but that’s ok because we have lots of American food, too!” I agree with him for sure, but what I experienced was so much more. With authentic dishes from Central Mexico and a substantial American menu, they have something for everyone. As soon as I walked in, my mouth started watering. The grill was wafting through the foyer, and I was greeted with Mexican pop music instead of the usual, more traditional tunes. The artwork was amazing, and the naturally bright restaurant itself was sparkling. It’s easy to tell when owners and employees truly take pride in their establishment and want you to feel at home. Instead of immediately perusing the extensive, yet organized menu, I asked Gustavo to take the reigns as I started in on the warm corn chips and fresh salsa. The first dish served was El Maguey’s new, chunky guacamole. For me, guacamole can make or break a Mexican restaurant. I was not disappointed. The hearty chunks of perfectly ripe, buttery avocado were complemented by purple onions, tomatoes and fresh cilantro that left my mouth with a pleasant lime after-taste. I recommend it along with their cheese dip, which is not too spicy but still has a great kick and perfect consistency. Next, I tried the ribs. Yes, ribs in a Mexican restaurant. You can find them in the El Gringo section of the menu which also boasts a catfish sub and chicken club, among other delectable American fare. El Maguey even makes its ranch dressing in-house, creamy with a hint of lime. The ribs were tender in a flavorful sauce with a sweet, smoky under taste, and of course, a bit of heat. Be prepared to get messy! The final dish served, El Molcajete, was also my favorite. The name itself translates as the Mexican version of mortar and pestle. In the lava stone was an assortment of marinated grilled chicken, tenderized steak, spicy chorizo (Mexican sausage), Monterrey cheese and cactus. The cactus intrigued

me the most as I’d never had it before. In this particular creation, the cactus had a smoky citrus flavor and an okra-like consistency. It was served with “plato parilla” – rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole, with a side of warm flour tortillas. This meal alone would bring me back. Situated just off 64 in Boonville, El Maguey has been going strong since 2002. It’s a great place for lunch with over 20 delicious and reasonably-priced options. Take the family or take a date for a romantic evening – just be sure to enjoy a margarita! – Whitney Patterson El Maguey is located at 3225 Warrick Dr. in Boonville, 812-8976666. localchefspotlight Aaron & Stephanie Peckenpaugh of PIZZA REVOLUTION

I grew up in a family restaurant and loved the high-energy atmosphere and being with the customer —Stephanie Peckenpaugh, Pizza Revolution

Pizza Revolution owners and chefs Aaron and Stephanie Peckenpaugh were both born and raised in Evansville. Aaron has a business degree from USI, and Stephanie has a BFA in interior design from AIU Atlanta. It was in Atlanta 15 years ago that they were introduced to wood fired pizza. “I grew up in a family restaurant and loved the high-energy atmosphere and being with the customer,” Stephanie says. “Aaron and I have toyed with the idea of opening a wood fired pizza place in my dad's old building since Atlanta. We knew we wanted to be different, though, and didn't want all of the headaches that come with operating a restaurant. We love the food truck movement and wanted to bring that same energy and vibe to Evansville. We both share all responsibilities and think of it as our baby.” Being able to leave Evansville for a few years gave the Peckenpaughs a different perspective that influenced their business. “We have just hung on to this dream of bringing wood fired pizza here for so long but were just against the idea of trying to have a full blown restaurant,” Stephanie explains. “We travel on short trips a lot to all the areas around Evansville – Louisville, St Louis, Nashville etc. and have seen

the food trucks there and knew this was perfect for us!” Stephanie is not only in charge of the “line” and ordering at Pizza Revolution, she also loves working on the creative end of the business. For her, working with people on events keeps things fresh and exciting. Aaron loves “cooking and coming up with new dishes – keeping things as fresh as possible.” And they both love working on the menu. There’s just one problem: keeping it to a manageable size for each event! With such dedication to creating a great product and menu, it’s nearly impossible for the Peckenpaughs to choose a favorite item – a common question from patrons. “I always say ‘throw a dart!’ There are reasons we love each of our pizzas. We both have such a broad palate and enjoy so many foods. It honestly just depends what I'm in the mood for,” Stephanie explains. “Most recently, I am obsessed with our White Pie – how can you not love Alfredo, sundried tomatoes, prosciutto and fresh arugula after it's fired?” For Aaron, it’s a new creation that has his vote. “I love our FunGuy which just hit the menu this September with a big variety of mushrooms, fresh rosemary and garlic. Our best sellers seem to be the Buzz Kill'a, CBR and Fig-n-Pig,” he says. Regardless of the ingredients, the Peckenpaughs enjoy watching the building and cooking process of their pizzas – wood fired at nearly 1000 degrees. “Seeing things bubble up and get the nice leopard charring is just an awesome thing. Some pies are easier to top in the beginning but we have fun with them all and are always trying to streamline the process for efficiency.” Pizza Revolution has traveled all over the tri-state, hitting big cities like Lexington and Louisville as well as smaller places like New Harmony. But its mobile nature is just part of its appeal. At the heart of the business is a serious passion for pizza. “We are always tweaking our recipes and trying new stuff in the kitchen. We love it! We love feedback and are always willing to try stuff for our customers,” Stephanie says. – Nikki Davis Be sure to follow Pizza Revolution on Facebook.

Global Crossroads World Music & Cultural Festival The day-long Global Crossroads World Music & Cultural Festival will be held in New Harmony on Saturday, October 4 from 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Tents on Tavern Street, with a special concert by Ugandan musicians Kinobe and the Wamu Spirit at the Murphy Auditorium at 7 p.m. The event is a collaboration of Under the Beams and University of Southern Indiana/Historic New Harmony. This inaugural festival features many family-friendly, hands-on activities and workshops focusing on African culture, including textile and art exhibits, paper and soap making demonstrations, labyrinth and maze walks, musical performances, drum circles and authentic food. These events are all free to the public. He is a multiinstrumentalist, composer and vocalist as well as the ambassador for the Harmony Foundation, a humanitarian group based in Canada. A special sneak preview with Kinobe is scheduled for Friday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m. inside the Evansville African American Museum. As a Jasper-born Hoosier gal who grew up roaming around like a gypsy, I've called several states, including California, home; so I've been gifted many cultural experiences. My first round in Evansville was to attend college, where I learned so much more than what I read in books – mainly about myself – and the knowledge sent me flying out to the west coast, vowing never to return. But fate and family brought me back, and I settled once again in Evansville to marry the love of my life, make a drastic career change and start mapping my next adventure. Although I'm not sure where the winds will take me, I can honestly say that I love Evansville and have often combated its sometimes ill reputation with my words, which I've always believed to be the strongest weapon. As a local music manager, bartender and now as a writer, I live, eat, breathe and bleed Evansville. We've been called the "most miserable" city, but I think those who voted must've never set foot here... or have never left their own home. Any day of the week, you can experience a plethora of artistic endeavors, whether live music from incredibly talented local musicians, art exhibits, food from almost any culture, fundraisers, activism, bazaars, comedy, theatre and so much more. Take a long walk on the riverfront; enjoy some of the most breathtaking sunsets you’ll ever see; take a deep breath and try to say "there's nothing to do here" one more time. I dare you. Signed, Whitney Patterson, a Worldly Citizen of Evansville.

T

he music is timeless; the voices are startlingly pure. It may be long after the fact, but when the four incredibly talented men in Under the Streetlamp take the stage, you’d swear it was the golden era of pop music all over again. Michael Cunio, Michael Ingersoll, Christopher Kale Jones and Shonn Wiley came together after performing in various touring companies of Jersey Boys, the long-running and critically-lauded musical celebrating the life and times of the 1960s rock and roll group, The Four Seasons. As Streetlamp, they deliver classic hits from the American Radio Songbook (50s, 60s and 70s), bringing the songs you love back to life with superb harmonies, energetic choreography and humorous banter – all while staying true to the original material. These former Jersey Boys will help you relive your musical past on October 8 at the Victory Theatre. Member Christopher Kale Jones kindly spoke with News4U before heading out on tour. News4U (N4U): Were any of you in the running for a part in the Clint Eastwood-directed film version of Jersey Boys? Christopher Kale Jones (CKJ): We were all interested in being considered even though we were on the fence about it a bit because we were progressing as a band. So, we sent in some videos but then learned after the fact that it was very important to the director to cast people who were currently performing in a Jersey Boys production. He wanted people who were used to having it in their blood. That made sense to us, and we think the movie turned out great. N4U: The four of you performed in various Jersey Boys touring companies. How did you know that the chemistry was right to pull off your own show? CKJ: We’re very different personalities with very different vocal talents, so we’re able to do different types of music. Michael Cunio has this amazing rock sort of wail, Shonn Wiley really reminds you of those 1940s sort of crooners, Michael Ingersoll puts a little Memphis funk on it and I come from a more soulful sort of sound. And in between the songs, we

have tons of banter when our personalities really come out. For four guys who came from the acting world, it’s great to be able to play heightened versions of ourselves. N4U: The Streetlamp show is quite physical with lots of choreography. How much work goes into structuring the movements? CKJ: Shonn is an award-winning choreographer, so he generated most of the ideas for the moves that we do. My input was mostly ‘no, I don’t think I can do that’ (laughs). A lot of people who grew up with this music really want to see it performed live, so we wanted to have a vibrant, energetic show – the audience can just let go and have a good time. We’ve had people with double hip replacements get up and dance (laughs). N4U: The Streetlamp PBS special that began airing last spring was very well-received and seemed to take you guys up to the next level. CKJ: Well, we always knew that we would be mega, huge superstars – we were never concerned about that (laughs). No, you know, it was kind of a nerve-wracking thing because when you put an hour special together for PBS, you have to self-fund it. They may air it once and if nobody likes it, it may never get shown again. The hope was that if enough people liked it, we’d be able to put together a tour. It was definitely a risk – there were some sleepless nights – but it was worth it. – Thomas Ellis Doors open at 6 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit victorytheatre.com. Under the Streetlamp’s first PBS special is now available on iTunes.

F

amous for helming the popular Food Network programs Dinner: Impossible, Restaurant: Impossible and Worst Cooks in America, Chef Robert Irvine is coming to the Victory Theatre on October 11. His new, wildly interactive show is already a huge hit with fans wholly unprepared for the no holds barred approach. This is Chef Irvine as you’ve never seen him before: cooking on the fly without a safety net, entirely at the mercy of the audience, navigating a series of seemingly impossible challenges – live on stage. Anything can happen, but one thing is certain: it will be endlessly entertaining. In between flights, Chef Irvine kindly spoke with News4U about fitness and the unpredictability of his new show. News4U (N4U): Growing up, I recall the majority of celebrity chefs being overweight, but now there’s a new breed of fit stars, including Gordon Ramsay and yourself. Is it a cultural change at work or simply a personal choice? Robert Irvine (RI): I think it’s a personal choice at the end of the day. I was in the military, so, for me, fitness has always been a part of my life. The culture of chefs is weird, because 9 out of 10 times, we work late; we go out drinking with a bunch of guys and get up early. But chefs like Mario Batali and Bobby Flay – they’re all changing their lifestyle because they want to live longer. It used to be acceptable (to be overweight); not anymore. In fact, we’ve got a new show starting called Fitness: Impossible (on the Food Network). It’s all about healthy lifestyle changes for people who have not been able to do it. I’ve also got a new fitness book coming out in January as well as a new fitness clothing line – and I launched my protein bar in September of last year. Fitness is my life.

N4U: British food always gets a bad rap and yet it seems that America loves British chefs. RI: You know, it’s luck – It’s the right time and the right place, the right look; all that sort of thing. But also, the top restaurants in the world are in London. You’re right, British food is heavy, but what we’ve managed to do is take these classic dishes and twist them, make them healthier and better looking. It’s funny, because there’s not one dish in the world that’s been created by anybody, because it’s all been done before. We’ve just taken it and put our spin on it – myself, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver. I just try to use television to help those less fortunate. I travel with the military 150 days a year; I have my own foundation that gives money to various kids’ charities. I think that TV is a great way to send that message. N4U: The show that you have in store for your fans at the Victory seems akin to a comedian walking out on stage with no material. It could be brilliant, it could be a train wreck; but it’s going to be a hell of a good time. RI: I will tell you that I couldn’t have worded that better. I don’t know what it is that I’m going to do until I get there. The people – the audience – participate and create the experience. I will tell you this: I’ve just finished three shows in Canada – where we’ve never been before – and each one of the houses went absolutely nuts. Each show was so different. Basically, I show up and some crazy stuff happens – a lot of screaming laughter and crying fits. But it’s kid-friendly and everyone gets a chance to interact. – Thomas Ellis Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, including the VIP package, visit victorytheatre.com

Signature Chefs Auction For 17 years running, the best chefs in southwest Indiana have come together to prepare their signature dishes in support of the March of Dimes. On November 6, they’ll do it all again at the Scottish Rite in downtown Evansville. The annual March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction isn’t just for foodies, though; it’s for anyone that enjoys an evening out and about with friends not to mention loves the thrill of a good bidding war. As in years past, in addition to a tasty tour of signature dishes, the event will feature both silent and live auctions with a great selection of items up for grabs. Expect an exciting conclusion to the evening when the bidding gets heated – a friendly competition for a great cause. One of America’s finest nonprofit organizations, the March of Dimes has been working to improve the health of babies for decades. Its mission is to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. By attending the Signature Chefs Auction, or by simply donating to the March of Dimes, you can do your part to help. – Thomas Ellis Featured Restaurants: Acropolis, Commonwealth Kitchen + Bar, Holiday Inn, Just Rennie’s, Kanpai, Outback Steakhouse, Piece of Cake, Pizza Revolution, Ri Ra, Sports Book, Texas Roadhouse and Tin Fish. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with complementary champagne. Tickets are $50 per person, $100 per couple or $1075 for a corporate table of eight. For more info, call 812-266-6005.

Boogie Nights, Evansville’s very own 70s and 80s Dance Club, will celebrate its one year anniversary Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4 with live music featuring some of the era’s best songs. On Friday, KIST, the nation’s top KISS tribute band, will perform their show based on the classic KISS lineup of the 1970s. Expect to hear all of your favorite KISS songs including “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout it Out Loud,” “Rock and Roll All Nite” and many more. KIST is made up of talented actors and musicians that perform as The Demon, Starchild, Catman and Spaceman characters. The festivities continue Saturday night with special guest Randy Jones, the original cowboy from the Village People. He’ll perform all of his former group’s biggest hits, including “Macho Man” and “YMCA.” In the past forty years, Jones has starred in movies, sold millions of records and had his face on the cover of Rolling Stone. Guests can expect to do the “YMCA” and dance to other Village People songs with

one of the original founding members under the biggest mirrored disco ball in Evansville. And be sure to check out The Loft upstairs at Boogie Nights, the newest addition to the Evansville location, featuring Electric Disco and Karaoke Roulette. – Russell Finn

If you’re looking for a way to unleash your inner artist while also enjoying a fine glass of wine, Rosé and Monet is the place for you. Evansville’s first and only paint and sip studio is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The staff provides instruction for both beginners and the experienced alike. “At the beginning, we ask if anyone has ever held a paint brush. We get a few that haven’t,” co-owner Cathy Johnson says. “They’re amazed. The instructor takes them step-by-step, from how to hold the brush to different strokes.” Rosé and Monet is unique in that they offer beer and wine for purchase in the studio. They also provide the canvas and supplies for you to create your own masterpiece. “We have a variety of things you can paint and three different instructors,” Johnson says. “We do seasonal things. Coming up, we have fall landscapes and scarecrows; we also do our take on different things like Starry Night by Van Gogh.” For a night out with the girls, corporate events or parties, Rosé and Monet offers a fun, inviting atmosphere and enough space to hold up to 64 guests. Their instructors can also come to you. “You can pick your time (and day). All that we ask is that you have at least ten people, and we’ll bring everything but the tables and chairs,” Johnson says. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for your creative friends, Rosé and Monet also offers gift certificates. To book a private party or event, call 812-213-6400. All events are 21 and over. – Lauren VanCleve Rosé and Monet is located at 4706 Vogel Rd. in Evansville. For more information or to view a schedule of upcoming classes, visit roseandmonet.com. Maria Whetstine of 22 Jefferson Avenue Art Studios & Gallery

T

wo years ago, an abandoned house occupied the lot at 22 Jefferson Avenue in downtown Evansville. Ivy had crept through windows and cracks in the wall; wooden window frames were rotting; the home’s foundation was damaged – all visual proof that this home was not suitable for occupants. In 2012, a young woman saw this seemingly wrecked building with a new perspective. Today, this house is not only home to an incredibly talented artist but also a gallery and studio that contributes to the recognition of fine arts in the Historic Downtown Evansville area. Anna Maria Whetstine, a 28-year-old artist and teacher, began working on the home after returning from Argentina where she spent her time pursuing a career as an artist. “I started doing a teaching program where you could teach English down there and was certified as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher,” she says. “I lived there for a total of three years. I was able to pursue my art career by entering art contests, painting and traveling around with paintings of different parts of Argentina (to sell). It was a great experience.” Whetstine’s work remains on display at an art museum in Argentina today. Once back in Evansville, Whetstine was hired as the art and Spanish teacher at St. John’s Baptist School in Newburgh and set about connecting with other local artists. “I met with some of the people at Haynie’s Corner; we had a kind of artists’ meeting, and we were talking about our visions of how things could grow down here: what needed to be done, what was lacking, our hopes, our dreams, and

also just getting to know each other and each other’s work,” she explains. “Everyone has been really nice and welcoming!” Whetstine’s family owns a local construction company, Comfort Homes, and they were able to find a house in the Arts District and start work almost as soon as she returned from Argentina. The once uninhabitable home is now a beautiful gallery that displays the work of local artists. Scores of paintings, sculptures, prints and even furniture were displayed at 22 Jefferson for the grand opening in August. “This really helps shed light on an area that people may have heard about in the past but don’t know anything about today,” she says. “There are great people living down here (Historic Downtown), and we want this area to grow and prosper. I want to give people a place where they can use their creativity to make that happen. Instead of leaving things unkept and left to ruin, we can turn it into something that treasures our heritage and our culture.” In addition to Whetstine’s living quarters and the art gallery, 22 Jefferson provides space for working artists in the community. There are two studios available to rent which can be used for either a personal workspace or to teach small groups/ private lessons. “In Argentina, I was living in the place where I worked, and that was really hard because you are constantly in your work environment,” Whetstine says. “Basically, I was living in my studio. I had my bed and I had my easel. It was just chaotic. You need a separation to be able to stay focused (while working).” On October 25, 22 Jefferson is hosting “Yart,” a one day event featuring local artwork for sale at a lower price: an art yard sale. Everything will be sold at $50 or less. It’s a wonderful opportunity not only for art enthusiasts but also for artists who aspire to sell their work and wish to collaborate with others who share their passions. In addition, 22 Jefferson will be included in future Funk in the City Art Festivals! – Lindsay Taylor For more information, email 22jefferson.artstudios@ gmail.com.

Well, Evansville… …Over the course of my life and with a little bit of growing up, I’ve determined that life is what you make it. If you choose to be unhappy, you will be unhappy. If you choose to be negative, you will never be able to see the positive. Many people say that Evansville is not the best place to be; that there’s not much going on here. But those are the people that are living life looking at the glass half empty. Being born and raised here, I have come to love this city. I have come and gone, moved away for different job opportunities, but something always brings me back. This city may not have everything that I want, but it has everything I need: great job opportunities, great education and great people. The friends I have made here are unlike any others. They are truly great friends…not looking to use me to get ahead in life, but instead there to support, encourage and be there on my journey. This city gives me a peace and comfort that I could not get anywhere else. I know that I will never go hungry seeing as Evansville has become a test market for restaurant chains. Leave it to us to decide what works; I like that. I know I can go to a local bar and run into people I haven’t seen in years and we will pick up right where we left off. And I can still get together on Wednesday nights and play a game that I first learned in elementary school: kickball. But most importantly, I have been able to express myself freely here, without judgment. I have been able to choose and follow my preferred religion, start my singing career at an amazing theme park, Holiday World, and gain a huge interest in the automotive industry, carrying on a family tradition. Do I think I will live here forever? I think I’m probably a little too adventurous to stay in one place forever. I want to experience different parts of the country. But I do know that I will never forget where I came from and the city that has such a huge place in my heart. So, thank you Evansville for keeping me grounded and for giving me a place I can always call home.

efore they were Sisters of Second Avenue, they were simply sisters. Camille Woolston, 30, Jasmine Ruckriegel, 26, Jade Marinin, 24, and Arielle Saltysyuk, 23, have always found comfort in their family values and musical gifts. From a young age, these women have graced audiences with their unique sound and beautiful vocal melodies. The rare talents of these sisters were apparent at a young age on Second Avenue in Jasper, Ind. Singing and performing as children – sometimes as pairs or even solo – provided each of the sisters with invaluable experience and confidence. Growing up, they had the unconditional love and support of their parents who helped the girls understand that it takes the cooperation of everyone for a group to flourish. Later, as members of the Jasper High School Choir, each of the young women became fully aware of their harmonically unique sound. Spurred by these positive high school experiences, the idea to combine their vocal talents eventually took shape and the birth of Sisters of Second Avenue was just around the corner. The girls’ first official performance took place at Arielle’s high school senior showcase where they wowed the crowd with rich harmonies that spoke of the tight bond they all share. Buoyed by the success of the show, the sisters next performed at the Strassenfest Talentspiel, receiving praise from all corners. It was then that Jade decided the sisters

should become Sisters – an official singing ensemble. Inspired by their humble upbringing in Jasper, she suggested the name Sisters of Second Avenue; it rolled off the tongue, a perfect fit. Like most groups, the Sisters initially performed covers of classic songs but soon realized they had much more to offer artistically. They started composing original songs based off of chord progressions created on acoustic guitar by Arielle. With a musical template in place, the Sisters then began weaving in their unique vocal melodies with lyrics that reflected the simple truths of life in southern Indiana – the meaning of family, hardship, trials and tribulation. Their knack for recalling the joys of childhood is apparent in “Indiana Summer,” a recent song that takes you back to sweet summer days. It’s just one of the six fantastic songs on the Sisters’ new self-titled EP which also includes such gems as “Beautiful Life” and the defiant “Fighter.” The recording has helped to open even more doors for the group, leading to a coveted spot at this year’s Ferdinand Folk Festival – the Sisters’ biggest show to date. In the spirit of community wellbeing, they have, and will, continue to do shows at local charities such as Will Read and Sing for food. At these events they are accompanied by great artists, writers and musicians. And even though life obligations make it a challenge to pursue music full-time, they will always have an unbreakable familial bond; the Sisters will always be sisters no matter what the future brings. – Andrew Barth Follow Sisters of Second Avenue on Facebook.

Schlafly Pumpkin Ale

Red Hook Pumpkin Porter

Sam Adams Octoberfest

Daniel Knight • 4.5 Think seasonal dessert beer. Pumpkin Ale pours up clear with a dark reddish copper color and a tight two finger beige head that fades away pretty quickly. Its aroma is spicy with distinct notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves with some underlying maltiness. The taste bowled me over with the first sip. Cinnamon is upfront with the other traditional pie spices not far behind. My first reaction was too much cinnamon and too sweet. A few sips later – and with a taste bud and mindset adjustment – it became a beer I’ll seek out to share during this fall season.

Daniel Knight • 3 Here’s a seasonal pumpkin porter with a less dessert-y style. This pumpkin porter poured up like anyone that knows porters would expect… dark, almost opaque black. It had a petite beige head that remained as a light film throughout. The aroma is mostly of dark roasted malts (duh, that’s why it’s black) with only very subdued notes of the expected pumpkin, maple syrup and pie spices. I might not have noticed them if not tuning in for them. The flavor followed the nose on this one with an earthy roasted dry porter taste and, again, subdued pumpkin and spices. I had to know it was there to actually detect the pumpkin taste. Overall, this porter didn’t work for me.

pumpkin or spice flavors. I think it was pretty complex with the flavors, but I would have liked more of a singled- out flavor.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thin, cream-colored head forms on this reddish-orange tinted beer. The first scent with this beer is pumpkin, followed by strong notes of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The spices also dominate the flavor profile of the beer with the pumpkin notes staying in the background when sipping the beer. The spiciness of this fall seasonal beer would be great with dessert on Thanksgiving or for sipping by the fire with baked goods. Jabez Martinez • 5 This is my favorite pumpkin beer on the market. I was in St. Louis over Labor Day and went to Schlafly and they did not have it available but I could get it in Evansville. I loved the spices and pumpkin flavor. I usually only drink one or two because they make me feel like I ate a whole pie. This beer is 8% ABV and you can taste it. Follow us on twitter @

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick, tan head tops this black porter and never completely evaporates. Equal parts pumpkin, spices and roasted malt fill the nose. The taste begins with very heavy notes of roasted malt with the pumpkin and spices only seeming to come through on the finish. This beer is strong enough to pair with a big Thanksgiving meal. Porter and stout lovers will definitely want to try this seasonal beer while it is available. Jabez Martinez • 4 IThis looks like your average porter when poured, and I like the scent of the spices and roasted malts. I have never had a pumpkin porter, and this one was pretty good. I just felt that it lacked on the

Daniel Knight • 4 Here’s a nicely executed effort by the Sam Adams folks. It pours up a clear dark copper color with a healthy one finger off-white head. Its smell is “classic Märzen” with a bready, malty toasted scent. The flavor follows scent with predominant malty, roasted, toffee like notes. As I admitted upfront in this review, I enjoyed this brew and although it’s a bit hoppier and not entirely true to the style of an authentic Oktoberfest, it’s a very good seasonal brew. Paul Bragin • 4.25 Practically no head forms on this beer, leaving only a deep amber liquid behind. Malt first highlights the scent profile, followed by some hops and, finally, a bit of spices. The malt flavor stays on the tongue while drinking with spices coming in at the finish. If you can’t make it to Oktoberfest, serve this beer with your favorite bratwurst and potatoes for a German treat or pulled pork for a nice flavor contrast. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a nice amber colored beer. I liked the sweet Octoberfest flavors, but I would consider this one just a little better than average. I think the flavors could have been a little bolder, but it’s not bad. I would consider this a good session/football drinking beer.

Goose Island Sofie

Daniel Knight • 4 Sofie is a Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale (also known as a Saison). Sofie pours up a pale yellow straw color with a light foamy head that hangs around for a few minutes. The aroma is that of unmistakable Belgian yeast, spices and subtle hop notes. The mouthfeel deserves special notice since the natural carbonation is so sparkly and Champagne-like. The flavor is of orange peel, coriander, lemon and vanilla.

It finishes with another kiss from that Belgian yeast. I’m not usually a big fan of Siasons but found this one to be complex and entertaining. I’ll certainly enjoy this one again some day. Paul Bragin • 5 A thick, white head forms on this goldencolored beer. A variety of scents are present, especially some fruit notes. The fruit stays on the palate when drinking the beer, followed by hints of pepper and vanilla. The beer continues to develop in the bottle for up to five years. If you can wait that long, it’s worth it to have some reserved for aging. If you want a break from ordinary beer, try this. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I loved this beer. It poured a clear golden color with a grapefruit aroma. It was a little sour but dry at the same time, and I enjoyed the orange peel flavor. This is a complex beer but sort of simple at the same time. This beer is a little pricey but well worth it.

Country singer David Nail returns to the Victory Theatre on October 23 with a new, personal collection of songs that documents his life journey over the last four years. Featuring the number one single, “Whatever She’s Got,” I’m A Fire is just the third release by the Grammy nominee, but he’s been a fixture – and a rising star – in Nashville for years. Nail’s two previous albums produced two monster hits, “Red Light” and “Let It Rain,” that kept him atop the country charts for weeks on end. Still, he remains refreshingly down-to-earth. “It sounds like a cliché, but I was born with a gift, I believe, and not many other gifts,” Nail says with tongue firmly in cheek. “So, I was either going to pursue music and have a chance at being successful or try my hand at something that I had no talent for.” Success came quickly but was initially unsustainable. “I came to Nashville from a small town in 2002 and got a deal pretty easily. I thought the hard part was over. But I think it was pretty obvious to the people that had invested in me that I wasn’t quite ready,” Nail explains. “It took me a while to figure out what had just happened – it was such a blur. Looking back now, it’s easy to see that I wasn’t mentally prepared.” It would take seven years before Nail officially released his debut album, 2009’s I’m About to Come Alive, but the wait was clearly worth it. “Red Light,” the second single off the album, was a career-making hit that continues to affect fans emotionally. “Even today, people come up to me and tell me how much they love that song and how much it means to them,” Nail says. But the best was yet to come. “Let It Rain” off 2011’s The Sound of a Million Dreams went all the way to the top of the country charts, and the video has racked up millions of views on Youtube. In 2012, Nail released a three-song digital-only EP titled 1979 that features a sterling cover of Adele’s number one smash, “Someone Like You.” Nail has spent the better part of 2014 opening for Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum, but now he’s taking the spotlight with the “I’m A Fire Tour.” – Johnny Fletcher The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information, visit victorytheatre.com.

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT Vol at ile Ester s ABOUT THE BAND: The Volatile Esters are a "power-trio" consisting of bassist/vocalist Kevin Book, guitarist/vocalist Edward Sein and a rotating cast of extraordinary drummers, including Jimmy Cummings, Jim Cauley and most recently, Joe Meleski. Usually, whoever books the band or is available does the gig. The power-trio configuration allows plenty of room for us to showcase the electric guitar; so if you think of guitar-centric rock music, we probably do it. The name of the band was arrived at after learning that oenophiles (wine enthusiasts) aerate or "slurp" their wine in order to release the "volatile esters" – molecules that are a result of, or involved in fermentation and give strawberries and bananas their scent. The formation of the band took place after guitarist/vocalist Edward Sein inherited a regular house gig with drummer Jimmy Cummings. Once the legendary Kevin Book was on board, the Volatile Esters were born – a band that would never, ever have to rehearse. WHAT THEY COVER / DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: Our style is quite eclectic, and our separate song repertoires are so big that a lot of times we just shoot from the hip and throw a song out there to see what happens. We may not know it, but we sure as hell are not going to practice. THEIR INFLUENCES: Our influences range from Muddy Waters and Hendrix to STP and Living Colour with some straight, basic rock and roll in between. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: Our next show is at KC’s Time Out Lounge opening for the Lo Cash Cowboys on October 3rd. We currently let people know where we're playing through our individual Facebook pages. This has worked out well since we are all in multiple bands. It's fun to get the followers of our many different bands in the same room.

cd reviews Classy Mongrel Love & Resistance Self-Released

Good things come to those who wait, at least in some cases. For Grant Short, aka Classy Mongrel, the wait hasn't been in vain. Ten years of composition holed up in his family garage have birthed a suspenseful yet honestly hopeful dream soundtrack that is Love & Resistance, from which tracks have already been hungrily snatched up by TV shows and have spawned an upcoming national tour. The album's first single, "Too Far," is not your humdrum shopping mall electronic garbage. Instead, it's a psychedelic 80s synth-pop head-nodder with layered vocals that keeps building and never disappoints. For those seeking a heavier bass beat, "Keep it Together" is robotic, dance-inspiring electro-funk-soul ear candy that promises "I will wait for you/ though you haven't got a clue." The cleanliness of the album drops away a bit during the light-industrial, trancey grit of "Night Mode," and the sunny sky clouds over on the introspective "A. Wolf" where Short confesses "I was raised by a wolf/ didn't teach me how to love." All in all, Love & Resistance is a shiny quarter in the bucket of dull electronic wooden nickels. These breezy sounds could keep the summer vibe going all winter long.

Alanna Royale ACHILLES Self-Released

To be deemed "the next big thing" in Nashville by someone who actually knows what they're talking about – such as Mike Grimes – is a lot of pressure. The next obvious step is to actually become a big thing, a goal Alanna Royale is hurtling toward at light speed. From their first show last year at the Basement to their sold-out EP release party, the hardworking members of this band make it look a little too easy. The six-piece, toddler band's debut album, ACHILLES, is chock-full of rhythm and vocalist Alanna Quinn-Broadus taunts us with her soul on display but definitely not up for grabs. "Animal" is the first single, but "Phantom Limb" is a funky ear-grabber with popska elements that could make the sting of Amy Winehouse's departure a little softer, even for the biggest fan. The orchestral desert-jazz intro of "Rock & Stone" leads into an honestly hopeful come-uppance tune that promises "you know I will get mine/you know I crush rock & stone/I always come out swinging." Warning: Kirk Donovan's trumpet on "Go Back" could lead to Tina Turner-eqsue dancing, and Alanna appears to have taken some notes from Carla Thomas.

cd sidebar Pine Hill Haints

The Picturebooks

The Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints K Records When the Pine Hill Haints say that they play "dead" music, they must mean that their tunes are out of this world, and we would have to agree. With Jamie Barrier's unapologetic vocals, often-rockabilly guitar and wife Kat's saw-playing, it's hard to imagine this haunting, Appalachian swing-addled stomp sound being forged anywhere but in an afterlife romance. In short, The Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints will make a perfect Halloween soundtrack. Kat's singing saw in the graveyard pop single, “Ms. Pacman,” will leave you with goose bumps, while Jamie's haunting vocals and Johnny & Santo-reminiscent guitar playing seal the deal. "Rattle Them Bones" is ghostly swing that evokes images of dancing skeletons while somehow incorporating an eastern flare; the fiddled ballad "Shattered Waltz" picks you up and dumps you in the middle of Appalachia; "Blow" is bonfire storytelling. And just when you think you've got the Haints pegged, they careen into "Can I Have Your Board" and "Total Zero," two energetic surfer-punk tracks where Barrier's vocals give a healthy nod to Bradley Nowell. Mind blown. With folk and Americana dollops, it may be hard to entertain the idea that this album has any navigable direction. Fortunately, it's a spooky ride worth taking.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Hypnotic Eye Reprise Records

Chances are, if you haven't heard of Tom Petty... let's be real. There's not much of a chance of that at all. For huge Petty-heads, the new album is a chance to say "I told you so," albeit a bit nervously, when refuting the cynics that keep spouting "rock is dead." Just when you think bands like the Heartbreakers that have been performing for almost 40 years have gone to Florida to play golf, they reappear on a rooftop screaming "We’re back, kids!" Give it a minute. You may be wondering where they've gone until "Red River," where Petty's unequaled vocals and yarn-spinning hug you back into more familiar times. The blues-rock riffs on "Power Drunk" and "U Get Me High" further confirm that we have not lost them; they have merely taken a long walk back to the same spot. The smoky, honky-tonk jive of "Burnt Out Town" has teeth that glitter with hints of ZZ Top and Bob Dylan, and if anyone still has concerns, "Shadow People" is about as Petty as it gets. Right on. No patronizing pats on the head for this one. The generations who can't beat on the steering wheel and scream the lyrics to "American Girl" could certainly take some notes from Hypnotic Eye.

Imaginary Horse RidingEasy Records The Picturebooks are a great garage rock band whose biggest feat so far is opening for Eagles of Death Metal. This German duo loves motorcycles and builds their own inside the very same garage where they create and record their music. Imaginary Horse is a good rock album filled with thundering drums and motorcyclerevving growls.

Ray Tarantino

Good Things Will Happen Tiny Drum Records Ray Tarantino was born in Italy, raised in the UK, and makes Americana music in Nashville. If the global back story of Ray Tarantino doesn’t immediately grab your attention, let his new album, Good Things Will Happen, change your mind. Good Things Will Happen has a pop-country feel, but thankfully tends to lean more toward Jakob Dylan than Jason Aldean. If you’re looking for a little 90s Wallflowers nostalgia, Good Things Will Happen certainly delivers.

Interpol

El Pintor Matador Records After a long hiatus, New York art-rockers Interpol are back with their best album in a decade. Full of the sort of sweeping, dark and dramatic songs that made 2002’s Turn on the Bright Lights and its follow-up, Antics, such landmark recordings, El Pintor may not quite reach the same heights, but it gets awfully close at times. Tracks such as “My Blue Supreme,” “Anywhere” and Tidal Wave” are quite beautiful and brilliantly structured, awash in reverb and filled with those classic angular guitar riffs. -Russell Finn
