Is that part of the reason why you're touring Khan on the big screen?

You know, that's an interesting question. I never thought of it quite that way. But, yes it is. The movie is played on a big screen - we've got the big sound and I come out on stage and interact with the audience for an hour or more. We have great fun and people laugh; there are questions and answers - the ball is batted back and forth between the audience and me. It's a really intimate, theatrical experience. Not only is the movie shown on a big screen when people have mostly only seen it on television, but there's me - a real human being - in front of them. Which comes as a shock to a lot of people.

I hope people are prepared for that - they might not know what to do.

Well, we supply oxygen.

The character of Khan - played brilliantly by Ricardo Montalbรกn - is such an integral part of why the film has remained a fan favorite. What are your memories of working with Ricardo?

Here he was playing this incredible role and by that time, he couldn't walk. I had a history with him - I'd seen him on Broadway; I admired him, saw him in movies - met him during the series. He rode horses, he danced - he was quite an athlete. And then I watched him gradually disintegrate; I believe it was his spine. He went from crutches to a wheelchair. So, I watched this man - this great guy - physically get worse, but we had a really cool friendship.

Speaking of cool friendships...you have a close bond with punk rock icon Henry Rollins who is a notorious loner - apart from his lifelong connection with Fugazi's Ian MacKaye.

Absolutely, he wanders the world alone. And he turns up at my house every so often and we hug - and he doesn't like to be touched [laughs]; it's the darndest thing. Yeah, it's a strange relationship, but I love him. I met him when we were working on some music together years ago; I found him interesting and said, 'Come over to my house for Monday Night Football,' and he did and...[laughs] I introduced him to Rush Limbaugh who I had interviewed earlier that day and had asked to come over. So, Rush Limbaugh met Henry Rollins - it was a sight. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

GUNS & HOSES X11 Punches in bunches: 12th annual charity boxing match promises nothing but uppercuts F OR D CEN TER | A P RI L 13

EACH OTHER

UP

After last year's near sell-out rubber match between area first responders - a true slugfest that drew 9500 people to the Ford Center and saw the Guns edge out the Hoses 8-7 - there's no telling just how crazy the 12th annual event will get on April 13. Or just how much money will be raised to improve the lives of children and people with disabilities in our community. That's been the focus of Guns & Hoses from day one; in fact, the event was created to help EPD Sgt. Patrick Phernetton's daughter "Mickey" who suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder that slows development and causes constant hunger. $1,320,000 later, this wildly popular charity boxing match has benefited 70+ organizations, including Autism Walk, Evansville ARC, Joshua Academy, SMILE on Down Syndrome, Wish Upon A Star and so many more. If you've never been to Guns & Hoses, get ready for a spectacle of epic proportions. The atmosphere is nothing short of a rock concert with lights, music and pyrotechnics not to mention nearly 10,000 people screaming for their preferred side. For the boxers, it's like walking into the lion's den. And no one knows that feeling quite like the EFD's Rob "Butterbean" Ralph, a self-admitted "glutton for punishment" who has competed in all 11 events to date. He's scheduled to battle Ryan Conaway of the Posey County EMS in one of the night's most anticipated match-ups. We dared to put them in a room together to discuss their much-hyped bout and more.

10 |

MARCH 2019 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Last year's rubber match to break the 5-5 tie was pretty intense. RALPH (HOSES): The 5-5 thing was pretty big because it goes to show you how even it is - how much the Guns train and how much

the Hoses put in. For the Guns to win [last year] was a big thing because they had never had the belt back-to-back before until they won the 10th contest in 2017. But then they went ahead and took it a step further and decided to win three in a row. CONAWAY (GUNS): I was actually going to mention that. I was

worried because we had a lot of new guys last year. We didn't have very many veteran fighters coming into the match. The Hoses did but our guys showed up and put everything into it. But that's what every fighter does every year. They train, they sweat and when it comes to fight night, they leave it all out there in the ring.

What are some of the signature matchups this year? CONAWAY: What's great is that we've got more females coming

out to fight again. Shelley Wallace is back - she's now a Vanderburgh County Sheriff - going up against Rachel Gentry. And then we've got two titan matches with myself vs. "Butterbean" and then Sam "Steel Hammer" Smith going up against Chad Emsweller. It's going to be like two big matches of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. We're not going to move from the center of the ring until someone's head pops off. Nothing but uppercuts. RALPH: And Daniel Hopper's coming back - he's getting a payback fight against someone he's lost to in the past. And other than

that, we have mostly new guys and gals. Which is good, because I'm getting a little older and we need some fresh blood.

NEWS4U MARCH 2019 | UPCOMING EVENTS

And yet you've somehow stayed beautiful all these years despite taking punch after punch. RALPH: [Points to head] It's like a rock. CONAWAY: Aging cream.

Ryan, you won your first Guns & Hoses bout in four tries last year. Rob, you're 7-4 to date. What can we expect from this "titan" matchup? RALPH: As long as he's got blue headgear on that's all that

matters. I'm easily confused and as long as he's got blue headgear on, I'll know who to hit. CONAWAY: All right, so that means I'm coming out into the ring with red on.

RALPH: Then the Hoses take the "W" either way! CONAWAY: No, no - that's the only thing that will be red. If it's just the headgear that throws you off, that's cool. We can make this work.

Win or lose, Rob, what keeps you coming back to compete every year? RALPH: Hands down, the reason for doing this is "Mickey"

Phernetton - who was the original cause for the creation of Guns & Hoses. Here's a girl that deals with her disease every single day but always has a smile on her face and then on top of that, she's competitive as hell and comes back from the Special Olympics with three gold medals after having surgery and getting rods in her back. I say, who can't be inspired by that? She's an awesome young lady now. She was nine when we first started the charity. I'll gladly get punched in the face to help someone like her. *Be sure to come out to KC's Time Out Lounge on April 5 @ 6:30 p.m. for the Guns & Hoses weigh-in. A fun time with G&H merchandise and more!

For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com or 911giveshopesportngin.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

To help you keep track of all the entertainment on tap in March, we've compiled a list

of this month's many highlights. Check it out and then make plans to attend as many con-

certs and comedy shows as your schedule or pocketbook - will allow.

THE DEPLORABLES TOUR O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 1 Comedians Steve McGrew, Michael Lofton and Terrence Williams - along with YouTube sensation The Deplorables Choir - are out to prove that they have the right stuff, so to speak. This conservative-minded comedy show promises no Trump-bashing but plenty of poking fun at the left and politics in general.

BLAKE SHELTON FORD CENTER / MARCH 2 Country music star Blake Shelton has truly hit the heights in recent years thanks in part to his long-running gig as a judge on NBC's The Voice and critically-acclaimed albums like 2017's Texoma Shore. Back for another sure sell-out at the Ford Center, he'll sing the hits and work up the crowd with his undeniable charisma and goodnatured humor.

STEVE MARTIN & MARTIN SHORT O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 8 Two comedy legends on one stage. Steve Martin and Martin Short share a life-long friendship and passion for making each other laugh - or making fun of each other, more accurately. It all translates to comedy gold when they get together so don't miss this rare opportunity to see two of the most influential funnymen of our time.

HAIRBALL V I C TO R Y T H E AT R E / M A R C H 9 Back by popular demand, the bombastic arena rock tribute act known as Hairball returns to kick out the (mostly) 80's jams, from AC/DC to Van Halen and every stadium band in between, complete with pyrotechnics and state of the art stage production. As an added bonus, a tri-state band will open the show.

JOHN MELLENCAMP O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 1 0 An Indiana kind of guy through and through, John Mellencamp returns to the Old National Events Plaza in support of 2018's Other People's Stuff, the acclaimed songwriter's 24th album. Expect a few new tunes along with plenty of JM classics like "Small Town," "Jack & Diane" and "Pink Houses."

CASTING CROWNS FORD CENTER / MARCH 14 Christian music's biggest band returns to the tri-state in support of 2018's Only Jesus. Casting Crowns' 12th album features the top 10 title track and "Nobody (feat. Matthew West)" - both of which you'll hear along with nearly 20 years of hits from the Dove and Grammy award-winning act.

CLINT BLACK O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 1 5 Country star Clint Black is "Still...Killin' Time" in celebration of his studio debut, released some 30 years ago. Known for his signature black hat, the Texas-born crooner has charted over 20 number one singles and exceeded sales of 20 million albums. Come out and enjoy this truly special anniversary show.

AARON LEWIS OWENSBORO CONVENTION CENTER / MARCH 15 Staind frontman Aaron Lewis raised more than a few eyebrows when he released the Town Line EP back in 2011. However, his unexpected country music detour has since become a full-fledged solo career thanks to The Road and Sinner, two raw and gritty full-lengths that bring to mind a present day Merle Haggard.

JOHN CRIST O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 1 7 One of comedy's rising stars, Crist has racked up more than 1 billion video views and shared the stage with the likes of Dave Chappelle, Jeff Foxworthy, Seth Meyers, Larry the Cable Guy, Trevor Noah, Dana Carvey and many more. His fall 2018 "Human Being" Tour sold out across the country so don't wait to get your ticket!

BREAKING BENJAMIN FORD CENTER / MARCH 18 Formed 20 years ago, Breaking Benjamin has gone on to become one of the most successful rock bands on the planet thanks to huge hits like "Blow Me Away," "I Will Not Bow" and "The Diary of Jane." 2018's Ember proved there's plenty left in the tank and BB's live shows continue to shake the foundations of venues across the country.

RON WHITE V I C TO R Y T H E AT R E / M A R C H 2 1 The scotch-drinking, politically-incorrect comic returns to the Victory to skewer more culturally-sensitive topics and remind everyone that "you can't fix stupid." A former member of the hugely successful "Blue Collar Comedy" troupe, White continues to sell out theaters well into his fourth decade.

RAIN: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 2 3 Meticulously recreating every detail of the Beatles experience, RAIN has been delighting fans of those legendary Liverpool lads for many years with a Broadway-style production that spans the history of the band, including post-Revolver songs never performed live By John, Paul, George and Ringo.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE V I C TO R Y T H E AT R E / M A R C H 2 6 Touring acoustic for the first time in support of The Southern Ground Sessions, a companion EP to 2018's full-length Find a Light, Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke have no intention of sacrificing the band's formidable power in the process - they're simply dialing down the distortion. Expect plenty of intensity from this career-spanning set.

HOME FREE V I C TO R Y T H E AT R E / M A R C H 2 8 A five-man a cappella group from Minnesota, Home Free won the fourth season of NBC's The Sing Off and quickly built a big following from the show. Post-competition, they've released five top 15 country albums, including 2017's Timeless, a top three hit which saw the band touring outside of the US for the first time.

GARY ALLAN O L D N AT I O N A L E V E N T S P L A Z A / M A R C H 2 9 They don't make them quite like Gary Allan anymore. For over 20 years, the charismatic California native has walked the fine line between country outlaw and chart topper, reeling off a string of hits along the way, including "Man to Man," "Tough Little Boys," "Nothing On But the Radio" and "Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)."

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock SHEPHERD'S PIE

Shepherd's pie is a comfort food that's easy to make, loved by everyone and perfect for St. Patrick's Day. While it’s traditionally made with lamb, it's equally as delicious with beef - which makes

it a cottage pie. Best of all, this dish can be made ahead to ease your stress in the kitchen.

1 TBS Worcestershire sauce 2 dried bay leaves Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup frozen peas

• • •

2.2 pounds potatoes 2/3 cups milk 2 TBS butter

• • •

2-3 TBS grated Parmesan 2 TBS butter Fresh thyme leaves for garnish

MASHED POTATOES

TOPPING

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add onion and garlic, cook for one minute. Then add carrots, peas, celery, thyme and rosemary. Cook for 3 minutes or until softened and sweet. Turn up the heat to high and add the lamb to cook, breaking it up as you go, until browned. Add the flour and mix and mix in. Add tomato paste, broth, (a little red wine or water if you prefer), bouillon, W sauce, and bay leaves. Stir well. Bring to a simmer, then turn down the heat so it is simmering rapidly. Cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reduces to a thick gravy consistency. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Cover, then refrigerate to cool for 1-2 hours or overnight.

ASSEMBLE 1. 2.

Preheat oven to 350F. Cook potatoes in boiling water for 15 minutes or until soft. Drain then return to the pot turned off. Allow to steam dry for 30 seconds. Add butter and mash until melted, then add milk, salt and pepper. Mash until it’s soft and smooth (spreadable, but not sloppy), adjusting with milk if needed. Spread mash onto pie, using a fork to draw squiggles over the surface. Sprinkle with Parmesan, drizzle with butter. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until deep golden on top and bubbling on the edges. Stick a knife into the middle to ensure it is piping hot. Stand for 5 minutes before serving, garnished with fresh thyme leaves if desired.

chemistry appears to be the key to achieving the master plan. "I'm not a lyricist but I've got stacks of music on my computer, so Lora and I trade stuff back and forth and see what sticks," McQueen says. "But for the most part we try to come up with brand new stuff." Of course, there's not enough original material to fill a set just yet, but the Devils are determined to keep their live shows interesting, covering everything from R&B classics like "Sir Duke" to the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb" and "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry. "There are some staples in our set, but there are plenty of songs that no other bands are doing," Bennett says. Even when the Devils cover an obvious choice such as Soft Cell's ever-popular "Tainted Love," they play it like the original but much lesser-known - 1964 version by Gloria Jones. With just a few shows under their belt, including two well-received performances at Lyle's Sports Zone ("We got a big thumbs up from everyone") and a recent Friday night gig at Bokeh Lounge, the Goosetown Devils are just getting started. But already they're looking to make a positive impact on the local music scene by supporting fellow bands and trying to build a sense of community. "The problem I think we've run into a lot," Lora Lynn laments, "is that everybody treats it like a competition; but we should all be working together. There are enough really good, talented bands in Evansville that we could be the next place like Cincinnati or Nashville." McQueen agrees, noting that the tide seems to be turning. "In the last few years,

I've

seen

more and more people being interested in seeing something new and original," he says. "Take the Cold Stares, for example, and people like Jimmy DeTalente. They've been around for awhile and stuck with it and things are taking off for them." Things will likely take off for the Goosetown Devils, too. But if Lora Lynn's autistic son Dakota has any say in the matter, the band's success will be achieved under a different name: Fuzzy Johnson. "He just pulls things out of his head and now we've started joking that our first album will be called The Goosetown Devils present Fuzzy Johnson's Greatest Hits," she laughs. Now that's something you don't hear every day. For more info, follow the Goosetown Devils on Facebook.

waiting on my hair to grow." Clearly, Willis is not only a great guitarist and singer but has a sense of humor, too. As noted, News 4U was in attendance for round two on 2/7, featuring Jimmy DeTalente & The Electric Revival, Audio Pilots, Eighty-Sixt, Top Dead Center, The Laybacks and Cause of Ruin. Seriously, this night was all killer, no filler, beginning with DeTalente's take-me-to-church countrified rock and roll. A veteran performer with an engaging stage presence, he had everybody clapping along to Maren Morris and Hank Williams, Sr., plus a standout original, "Where We Begin." Audio Pilots from southern Illinois followed, taking the evening in a

Eighty-Sixt

heavier direction with covers of Greta Van Fleet and Metallica before ending on a high note with the band-written "Leaving Here." Next up, Eighty-Sixt wowed the crowd with spot-on renditions of KISS, Boston and Matchbox 20. This family affair from southern Indiana may be hard to beat, frankly, if sounding just like the original artist is a priority for the judges. Evansville's Top Dead Center then had a tough act to follow but came out with axes blazing, bashing out a unique combo of classic rock and punk rock that peaked with "Hell Yeah," a spunky original written specifically for the competition. Then came the most unexpected moment of the evening as a relatively unknown duo from Evansville and Vincennes took the stage. Repeatedly claiming to be the "rebirth of rock and roll," The Laybacks launched into a frenetic, all-or-nothing set of 50's classics, including "Good Golly, Miss Molly," "Money (That's What I Want)," "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Long Tall

Jimmy Detalente

Sally." It wasn't always pretty, but it certainly lived up to the hype. Finally, Cause of Ruin - also out of southern Illinois - brought this rocking evening to a close with a definite Alice In Chains/Godsmack vibe, grinding out several top-notch originals, including "High Horse." Post-performance, we caught up with Shawn Rider, bassist for Audio Pilots (also featuring vocalist Garrett Roe, guitarists Tom Drone and Eric Vaughn and drummer Walker Pearce) who gave us the lowdown on the band's excellent original song "Leaving Here." "That song is about being stuck in a bad situation - just letting you know that you don't have to stay there," he explained. "In my instance, it was about an addiction I was trying to get my way out of." He went on to say that despite not having played in front of a crowd since October, the

The Laybacks

performance felt good, albeit a little nerve-racking. Audio Pilots intend to spend 2019 writing more original songs with the goal of recording a full studio album and lining up some gigs in the Evansville area. "Our main focus tonight was trying to get our foot in the door over here," Rider said. Artists and bands that were scheduled to duke it out on 2/21 included Morgan Donahue & The Left of Center Players, Breathing Rm, The Dead Lights, Hong Kong Peaches, Cynthia Murray and Sherwood Story. stories FROM THE STAGE An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians

MADISONVILLE DUST BOWL 2017

Evans-

ville's Brian Richardson - better known as "B Rich" in tri-state musical circles - knows how to give up the funk. For nearly 20 years, the multi-talented saxophonist/keyboard player has been the soul of the local scene, leading various configurations of bands with an enticingly smooth sound influenced by the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire, Grover Washington, Jr. and Erykah Badu - just to name a few of his favorites. It all adds up to a dizzying cocktail of dance floor grooves that leaves no seat occupied when Richardson and his crew hit the stage. The 2019 lineup - collectively dubbed BG3 - includes Gerry Smoot (keys), James Johnson (bass), Greg Williams, Sr. (drums), Bertel Adams (guitar) and Valentina Gibbs (vocals). According to Richardson, the name dates back to a configuration featuring Smoot, Williams, Sr. and Georgia Funkadelic on bass. In essence, Brian + three 'Gs' (Gerry, Greg and Georgia) = BG3, a moniker that has stuck regardless of the number of people involved in the project. And B Rich has never been one to skimp on talent, especially during the early pre-BG3 days when the demand for bigger shows prompted a move away from his initial one-man band approach

FEATURING BG3

to a mind-boggling 11-piece outfit - which could barely fit on the stage for Family Day in the Park back in 2003. But even after slimming down to a 9-piece, Richardson found the experience frustrating. "It was a headache but a valuable learning experience," he says. "I was letting everyone put their ideas in - but that's not how it's supposed to go when you're the leader. When I finally figured all this out, I was forming a different band which became BG3." He was also starting to play a lot of shows all over the tri-state, including private gigs at banquets and balls, as more and more people tuned into Richardson's "my sound" philosophy. "It's the energy that everybody gives off, so it's not just related to me," he explains. "It's saying that everybody has a different sound. So when we're on stage with the band, I tell them to create their own thing. We play as a unit but we're giving off different types of sound." BG3's formidable chemistry and eminently danceable mixture

of jazz, funk, R&B and soul eventually grabbed the attention of Big V, former rapper for Kentucky's Grammy-nominated Nappy Roots. Quite unexpectedly, less than one week before the 2017 Madisonville Dust Bowl, an annual charity basketball tourney that features performances from high profile entertainers, Richardson received a fateful phone call. "Big V's manager got in touch to ask if we would be able to back him up at the show," he recalls. "I asked when the show was and he said, 'Friday.' I said, 'Friday?!' This was on a Sunday." Still, the limited time frame to learn 15 songs didn't deter Richardson; this was an opportunity too good to pass up. By Wednesday, Big V had made the trip to Evansville and was rehearsing with BG3 in the band leader's living room - a surreal but amazing experience. "He was the coolest guy," Richardson says. "You know, there are some guys that are so complicated to work with but this guy was on point. He was so laidback - knew exactly what he wanted and even let me throw in my ideas." After just five days of rehearsal, BG3 took the stage on August 4, 2017 at the Madisonville Dust Bowl in support of Big V - a hometown hero of sorts, having grown up in the Shake Rag neighborhood of Bowling Green. The band opened the show and then deftly transitioned to backing the Kentucky-born rap star, fully prepared for just about anything. "I've dealt with rappers before - on stage things change quickly," Richardson says. "Like, he'll stop the song and even though we didn't rehearse like that, we've got to go with it." By all accounts the show was a huge success with a big turnout for Big V - and BG3 got lots of love from the crowd, too. "Everybody wanted to know who we were when we got off stage - and believe it or not, a lot people knew who I was because my name - B Rich - has been out there for a long time," Richardson says. More activity with Big V is in the works, including upcoming shows and a live recording. Still, this is not the first time that Richardson has mixed with celebrity. The BG3 highlight reel also features memorable gigs with actor Danny Glover and MLB Hall of Famer Darryl Strawberry. Just be sure to keep up with the BG3 Facebook page for all the latest news and stay tuned for a new single from B Rich called "One True Love" (a collaboration with Gerry Smoot) scheduled for a late March release. with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport.

BEACH TOO SANDY, WATER TOO WET (WEEKLY)

A podcast about people who desperately need the world to know their (usually poorly-written) opinion, Beach Too Sandy features a brother/sister host team scouring the internet looking for negative reviews of places fitting a randomly assigned theme. These reviews are then read dramatically to each other and the audience, featuring the most sarcastically-edited melodramatic background music you'll ever find in a podcast. The host's segments are hilarious, including challenges to find hyperspecific reviews (such as a negative review of a public park that mentions a squirrel), and the relatively short episode lengths mean it never overstays its welcome. beachtoosandy.com

FUZZY LOGIC (BIWEEKLY)

Ever think you know the answer to a question but still do a quick internet search before responding? Fuzzy Logic turns this idea on its head to deliver one of the funnier roundtable discussion podcasts in recent memory. Each episode four friends are tasked with answering questions that for sure have factual answers without looking anything up. Once they've talked out an answer, they go off to research the question and see just how right (or wrong) they were. The hosts are hilarious, the conversation never stalls, and the ever-present threat of being completely wrong keeps things interesting throughout. fuzzy.tumblr.com

THE CRYPTONATURALIST (BIWEEKLY)

This deceptively calming audio fiction series delivers fascinating tales of mythical creatures through the soothing narration of the titular character, a naturalist by way of cryptozoology. Each episode is packaged to feel like a David Attenborough nature documentary delivered by way of Bigfoot. The creatures are as fantastical as the host's voice is captivating. The show also features a wonderful break segment that spotlights short fiction and poetry in a similar manner to how Welcome to Night Vale showcases music each episode. Start from the first episode to hear a simple little concept blossom into a beautifully realized series. cryptonaturalist.com

HOOKED ON TJ HOOKER (SEMI-MONTHLY)

Each episode hosts Eric Szyszka and Ben Worchester band together to discuss an episode of the 1970s police procedural T.J. Hooker, starring William Shatner. The duo's self-awareness elevates this from the usual media recap podcast fare. They fully recognize and embrace the fact that nobody asked for a TJ Hooker recap podcast, but they also like having an excuse to re-watch the show and dissect what's fun about it (as well as what hasn't aged well). It's the epitome of a side project done purely for the fun of making a thing. It's worth a listen if only for the occasional clips of 1970s Shatner attempting to escape his Star Trek overacting typecasting with disastrous results. tjhookerpodcast.

NEWS4U MARCH 2019 | ENTERTAINMENT

with Marisa Patwa THE MARVELOUS MARVEL UNIVERSE For the past ten years, Marvel fans have been entertained by the quick wit of Iron Man, the apple pie goodness of Captain America, the bulkiness of the Hulk and the hunkiness of Thor. And now, finally, the long-awaited Captain Marvel movie, starring Brie Larson in the titular role, comes out on Friday, March 8. Larson will be the first female in the Marvel universe to have her own film, following in the footsteps of the DC universe's hit Wonder Woman, in 2017. Captain Marvel takes a similar note to Wonder Woman and the Marvel universe film with a similar name, Captain America, as it is set in a different decade than now: 1995, with Larson playing Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot turned intergalactic superhero. The trailer, featuring Larson kicking butt and taking names, is reason enough to go see this action-packed film. Captain Marvel, of course, then builds up Avengers: End Game, which comes out on April 26. This anticipated popcorn flick is slated to sum up the Thanos saga and hopefully end in the revival of about a dozen of our friendly neighborhood superheroes. I, for one, am excited to see how Captain Marvel interacts with the Avengers, and how she hopefully saves the day. Spider-Man: Far From Home premieres on July 5 and will follow Avengers: Endgame, meaning there’s a solid chance this gawky teen will be resurrected by the end of Endgame. This goofy Spidey adventure follows the webbed teen and his friends across Europe as part of a school trip, giving off major Lizzie Mcguire in Italy vibes. Does that make Zendaya Paolo? While we will no longer see Robert Downey Jr. flying 1,000 feet in the air in a sleek metal suit or the Hulk turning lime green after the slew of Marvel films hitting in 2019, we will have several new movies to look forward to in the future, including a Black Widow film, Black Panther and Doctor Strange sequels and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Apparently the world will still have more villains from other planets and drama even after big, bad Thanos is presumably defeated by Captain Marvel in Endgame. Even if the Marvel universe is never really safe, it will always be fun to watch these superheroes bicker like brothers and sisters, all while fighting genocidal aliens - and not to mention, looking supernaturally good in spandex.

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents. CHEWBACCA & HAN SOLO: These two

bunnies are – well – brothers? Sisters? Sisbros? Anyway, they are both hermaphrodites! They both possess male and female genitalia. They have also already been neutered, so regardless of their anatomy, they will not be reproducing in any way. How unique is that?! Here’s your chance to adopt a super interesting pair of buns. These kids are about a year & a half old. Han Solo is the chocolate-colored Rex, and Chewbacca is the tortoiseshell-colored American. The adoption fee for both is $100 and they must go home together. They will go home neutered and microchipped for that price!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT XENA With a husband and five young kids, not to mention a bearded dragon living in the basement, Evansville's Jessica Taylor is a very busy woman. Still, that didn't stop this energetic Pet Supplies Plus employee from rescuing a shelter animal - just not quite the animal she intended. "I got on the VHS website to look for a hedgehog and somehow ended up on the dog page - I saw Xena and read her story," Taylor explains. "I told my husband that we had to go meet her." Just three years old, the sweet German Shepherd was left homeless when her previous owner got sick and passed away. But there was something else that really drew Taylor to Xena. "She has a little bit of anxiety - which makes her the perfect dog for me because I also have anxiety," she says. In fact, after arriving at her new forever home, Xena immediately displayed a fear of the stairs leading to the front door as well as to the upstairs inside. She's since conquered that particular anxiety but still won't go down the basement steps to meet her bearded dragon friend. All in good time. Thankfully, there's no fear of the kids. According to Taylor, Xena took to them "like they've known each other their whole lives." Another successful adoption!

Q:

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ABUSE?

with Jonathan Gluff

Honoring each other’s humanity seems to

Child’s Play (or “Readily A Parent”)

be a challenge these days. In my tradition (and in the traditions of many others), we see humankind as being “created in the image of God.” Don’t sweat the language. What it means is that every human being is valued and treasured and should be respected and honored. Over the last year, we have heard story after story of people who abuse and assault others. In many of these cases, a person of power inappropriately exploits that power for their own gratification. The victims are afraid to speak up and suffer in silence. It is time for churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious communities to increase their efforts in caring for victims. First, we must be vigilant in identifying and prosecuting those within our own communities who have practiced misconduct. Second, we must offer care and healing to those awakening to their woundedness.

Religious

of

every kind must put into action the teaching central to all of our traditions: love God and love neighbor. This can be a moment of great awakening and compassion. If you are a victim, there are people who will stand with you. Reach out to us and we will walk this road together.

There’s a lot of crazy things going on these days, be they in our world, in our country, or even in my life. (Luckily, it’s a good kind of crazy in my case; I wish I could say the same about the others.) Faced with a looming deadline for this article and option paralysis from the myriad topics from which to choose, I asked for a suggestion from my favorite source of inspiration: My wife, Kristen. Almost without hesitation, she replied, “How parent-child relationships evolve with age.” “Sure,” you may be thinking. “Of course that happened! And Albert Einstein stood up and clapped at the end, didn’t he?” And you’d be forgiven for thinking that, given how often people make up similar scenarios for seemingly no reason. You see, not only am I lucky enough to have an amazing wife - I’m also lucky enough to have great in-laws. (Yes, they really do exist!) From grandparents to cousins to aunts and uncles to my motherand father-in-law, my wife’s family is the best I could possibly ask for. And by the time you read this, my amazing motherin-law, Lisa, will only be one or two days removed from celebrating her [year redacted]th birthday, for which Kristen has been planning a particularly great party.

MARCH 2019 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Her desire to try to give her mom a memorable experience in the same way a parent plans a child’s party is precisely what prompted her to pick this topic. But it’s not always about birthdays, bowling, and balloons. Just as children need a parent’s counsel in trying times, when the children become well-adjusted adults themselves, the parent may need the child in the same manner. With the deteriorating health of a close family member (a man whom I greatly respect and admire) hitting us all very hard, mother and daughter are once again reversing previous roles as Kristen gives words of encouragement amidst conversations that carry a bit more gravitas than usual. Certainly, this is a concept that’s not hard to come across when one extrapolates the natural course of the human life cycle. But nonetheless, observing it in real-time is enough to not only give anyone pause and contemplate their own mortality, but also to underscore the importance of parents maintaining a good relationship with their children. After all, who else will both plan your birthdays and be a solid source of support?

TRI-STATE

POLITICS with Bryan Fox

BEWARE OF TURNCOAT MELCHER If you're a follower of politics, every so often you'll hear about a "turncoat." A turncoat, in American political terms, is someone who shifts allegiance and switches to the opposing side or party. With that being said, a turncoat will be on the ballot this year for the Evansville city elections in the form of Steven Melcher. Melcher, 70, has been a Democrat his entire political life which includes a seat he once held for 17 years (1991-2008), serving as City Councilman for the 3rd Ward. He is now trying to get that seat back but as a Republican. However, the local media has yet to ask: Why the sudden change in party affiliation? If you look at Melcher's history, he ran for several offices as a Democrat after his stint on the City Council. This included serving two terms as Vanderburgh County Commissioner. And in 2014, he ran as a Democrat - in a losing effort - for State Representative, falling to incumbent Holly Sullivan. While party affiliation might not matter as much locally, it certainly matters once

elected to a state or federal position. If Melcher is elected to represent Indiana in the State House, he will have to caucus with the Democrats. Keep in mind this same caucus fled the state several years ago to protest a vote they didn't want to address. Also, in 2015, during the city's last election, Melcher's wife, Anna, ran as a Democrat for the same seat he once held in the 3rd Ward. But she lost to Anna Hargis who became the first Republican to claim that seat in who knows how long. Again, this was just one election cycle ago. Melcher appears to see the winds changing. With no serious candidate to challenge him, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, a Republican, looks to be on his way to winning a third term in a landslide which could trickle down to the City Council races assuming that GOP voters will be more enthused. Melcher, the political operative, wants his seat back and it appears he's willing to sacrifice party loyalty to achieve it.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher Father Time-Out It happens to the best of us. Yes, we all eventually arrive at that stage in life when the sheer number of candles on the birthday cake becomes a potential fire hazard, a life-threatening situation. Father Time pulls no punches, mind you. That selfish bastard doesn't care about anything except bringing us a step closer to the end each year; in fact, he seemingly gets a real kick out of it, gleefully sharpening his scythe in preparation for his next victim. It's unnerving, frankly. By the way, have you ever gotten a good look at that guy? I mean, it's difficult and all with that giant hoodie obscuring his weathered features, but basically it's as if Dateline's Keith Morrison grew a mountain man beard, stopped bathing and dressed strictly in tattered bathrobes. Safe to say that ol' FT's not scaring up too many dates these days. And maybe there's the rub. Maybe that explains why he's so unforgiving, so bitter - why we can't get a Father Time-Out, if you will. Come on, take five, brah! Lay off the death wishes for a spell and let some of us have our birthday cake and eat it, too. Cool? Until that time, I'll continue to keep a fire extinguisher within reach when I "celebrate" the passing of another year - as I will this month. And please, no trick candles, ok? I'll surely die from respiratory failure.

IO

NETFLIX A lot has been written about the allegory-heavy Netflix Original IO, saying that it is a lifeless plea to consumers to cancel their subscription. However, if you were ever on the fence about your patronage to the streaming site, you would have switched providers a few months ago when they premiered the diabolically terrible body horror fiasco The Titan. There is something to be said about the slow build that has become a standard among the less reputable titles that Netflix has produced, but as for IO its movement is built on more than just the mystery presented by the premise to the film. Sure, Sam Walden (Margaret Qualley) is trapped on a dying Earth, heavily polluted with only pockets of livable space, and she is tasked with finding a cure that will allow humans to live and breathe outside those safe spaces. The underlying story of IO, however, moves past a simple structure of postapocalyptic survival and begins to question our morality when it comes to monogamy, autonomy and self-fulfillment. Walden pushes against the expectations of her father, boyfriend and fellow scientist and love interest Micah (Anthony Mackie). In the end, it comes down to the question of what is not just best for humanity, but what is the right thing for Walden's piece of mind. She is tasked with finding herself, and, in the end, saves her own humanity. - John Thurgood

VELVET BUZZSAW NETFLIX

“All art is dangerous, says Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo), the main character in Dan Gilroy's new paranormal horror flick Velvet Buzzsaw. It would seem, however, that some art is more dangerous than others. In the case of Velvet Buzzsaw, the truly despicable behavior comes from the people handling the art and not the art itself. That is until a new collection by a deceased artist is discovered and turns the heads of every art aficionado in the Los Angeles area. The catch is that the deceased artist who created this much sought after body of work never intended his work to be traded. For him, it was a process of working through his own demons, which must have been some really heavy exorcising, because the result eventually comes to life and wreaks havoc on all those who have profited from it. Overall, it is a fun, satirical look at the art world in Los Angeles with some inspiring performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Zawe Ashton, and, for those who like supernatural gore a la Final Destination, a suspenseful guessing game of who is going to get theirs next and how. Some of the most interesting parts of this film are the scenes that show how differently each piece of art affects each character in their own way, especially the line it draws between those who are drawing inspiration for it and those who only see dollar signs. - John Thurgood

BACKSTREET BOYS DNA RCA Records Backstreet’s back and they’ve grown a bit. It’s been a minute since the boy band boom of the late 90s/early 2000s. Music has changed; the boy band archetype still sells but nowhere near the powerhouse numbers of the early 2000s. DNA could’ve followed the same plot structure Sony had Backstreet stick to 20 years ago: keep songs in second person; say the word “baby” a lot; wax poetic about as sterile a form of romance as possible to keep it clean for the kids; throw a simplistic beat on it and call it an album. DNA is by no means a gritty reboot of the Backstreet Boys’ image. As a collection of 12 songs it does little more than live up to the title: this is the DNA of what made Backstreet enjoyable back then. Yeah, it’s the music version of fast food, but the soul wants what it wants. The beats are more complex, the lyrics carry a little more weight. I may still have to doublecheck Google to remind myself Backstreet Boys are “the ones without Justin Timberlake” but they can still deliver a heck of a catchy album. - Gavin Gaddis

ARIANA GRANDE thank u, next Republic Records Ever since the titular single was released, I’ve been hoping against hope that the full album would drop during an appropriate review window. Well, it did and now I can spend 200 words singing its praises. I've made the mistake of not giving Grande much of a shot over the past few years. Yeah, there was the occasional good Top 40 hit but I had my own music interests to attend to and didn’t feel like adding another to the list. But I did myself a service in listening to thank u, next which continues a trend in recent years of badass women putting out unapologetically raw albums - i.e., Dirty Computer, Lemonade, and Invasion of Privacy. We’re blessed to have a media landscape where the likes of Grande, Monáe, Cardi B, Beyonce, and others are putting out such quality music. Gone are the usual pop tropes of easily-marketable opinions and emotions. Grande sings of self-love, empowerment, guilt, lust... it's real music with real feelings. This album takes risks not many have the courage to take, and Grande pulls them off. - Gavin Gaddis

WEEZER Weezer (Teal Album) Atlantic Records Weezer (Teal Album) feels like someone hired a middle-of-the-road band to play the whitest wedding ever and then recorded their set. I’m still baffled as to how there was a huge Twitter campaign with Weezer fans getting excited that the band had finally covered Toto’s "Africa." Ninja Sex Party put out the definitive cover in 2017, leaving Weezer to coast across the finish line with an uninspired, flaccid rendition months after the meme of covering "Africa" died out. Good covers are faithful to the original song but find some way to elevate it, to make it unique. Weezer has released a bunch of really good karaoke covers but forgot to remove their own voices from the tracks. Their take of "Mr. Blue Sky" left me so apathetic I had to go listen to ELO’s original to remind myself I genuinely like that song. Do yourself a favor and just make a Spotify playlist of the original songs. It won't even make a tonally fun playlist because it’s effectively a random Best of the 80s set with some wildcards thrown in, but it’s still better than actually listening to Teal. - Gavin Gaddis

WHITE LIES FIVE Pias America If you’re in the mood for an English-tinted rock album with plenty of electric guitar, a healthy dose of synth, and smooth vocals, there are worse options than FIVE by White Lies, especially since FIVE isn’t afraid to try new things. The end of "Kick Me," a song that lives comfortably somewhere on a spectrum between mid-career David Bowie and hard-driving Oasis single, flips the script by exchanging the guitar-led music with a simple piano plinking out the final notes. Harry McVeigh’s driving lyrics and deeper sound feel like what might happen if Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds ever tried to sing properly. I’ve not listened to anything else by White Lies but FIVE delivers a fun variety of tones and styles without leaving the band’s wheelhouse entirely at any point. The album works well as one total piece even with these moments straying from the main sound. This is the kind of album that begs to be consumed while sitting in a comfortable chair with the lights turned off (heavily-spiked adult beverage optional, of course). - Gavin Gaddis

DEER HUNTER Why Hasn't Everything Disappeared? 4AD Deerhunter return with their first album in four years - their longest gap in between releases. During this time, frontman Bradford Cox must have taken time to reflect on the state of the world and our country, because while past Deerhunter albums have addressed Cox and second songwriter Lockett Pundt’s inner demons, Why Hasn’t Everything Disappeared? finds the band exploring outside perspectives with more observational takes on the world. Lyrically and thematically, this record has more in common with Athens, Georgia contemporaries Drive-By Truckers than any of Deerhunter’s previous work. My favorite song on the album, “What Happens to People?” is the prime example of this newfound perspective in Deerhunter. To me, it exemplifies the somber feeling of seeing someone stuck in old ways and longing for the past instead of embracing a better future. In a recent interview with Stereogum, Cox states that this album is an argument against nostalgia, and I think his songwriting argues his case well. Though Deerhunter have slowed down their output, they have yet to release a record less than great, and their latest is a welcome addition to their discography and necessary listen for rock fans in 2019. - Russ Finn

SHARON VAN ETTEN Remind Me Tomorrow JAGJAGUWAR If you are familiar with Sharon Van Etten’s work, you already know she is an incredible songwriter with a strong output of solid indie folk-rock albums. Van Etten’s latest release, Remind Me Tomorrow, presents us with the great, personal songwriting we’ve seen from her in the past, but offers an incredible new sonic direction; it's filled to the brim with lush, atmospheric synth sounds that propel the singer to new heights and add a sheen not heard in her music before. The new sonic direction on Remind Me Tomorrow, while brooding and dark, contrasts with Van Etten’s songwriting, which is often positive. This yin and yang of dark sounds and beautiful words result in a harmonious, warm, comforting album. If you like conventional pop and rock music, I couldn’t recommend this album enough. Van Etten has no shortage of fans, but deserves more recognition in an industry dominated by Lana Del Rey and the like. Take a listen to the single “Seventeen” and see for yourself. - Russ Finn

BOB MOULD Sunshine Rock Merge Records The former frontman for Hüsker Dü and Sugar, two of the most influential alternative rock bands of the last four decades, Bob Mould has been riding a resurgent wave of late thanks to a trio of critically-acclaimed albums released between 2012 and 2016 that revisited his signature wallof-guitars sound and recaptured his gift for melody - and fury, most importantly. But with Sunshine Rock, the notoriously conflicted 58-year-old is looking a bit more on the bright side - a newfound sunny disposition that, unfortunately, results in a number of by-thenumbers songs, including the highly irritating "Camp Sunshine." Still, Sunshine Rock is not without highlights, including the opening one-two punch of the title track and "What Do You Want Me to Do?" - both displaying Mould's unparalleled ability to combine heavy guitar and infectious hooks, a formula copied ad nauseam by numerous bands over the years. And to be fair, there are true moments of aggression ("Thirty Dozen Roses," "I Fought") and affecting bleakness ("Sin King") but the album ultimately comes off as vaguely generic with Mould primarily on cruise control - though even in middle gear he still blows most musicians off the road. Johnny Fletcher

ATOMIC ROAD KINGS Clean Up the Blood Bigtone Records Recorded using vintage analog equipment, Clean Up the Blood has a classic sound reminiscent of Atomic Road Kings frontman Big Jon Atkinson’s previous solo album, House Party at Big Jon’s. The band's deeply bluesy debut opens with “I’ve Got Time,” a ballad that looks at the life of a man who made questionable choices and finds himself in prison. “Rumors” begins with a blistering guitar riff from guest artist Tony Delgado while Eric VonHerzen’s harmonica playing shines in the middle of the song. On "Have Your Way," Bill Stuve’s bass line provides a nice beat for dancing. VonHerzen’s harmonica talents appear again in “My Way Back Home," his impressive solo taking center stage halfway through. On “You Got to Change,” Atkinson’s guitar and VonHerzen’s harmonica play off each other nicely. Elsewhere, Robert Welsh’s guest appearance on piano for “Vibrations” provides a rolling sound to complement the other instruments. Clean Up the Blood is a must have for anyone who appreciates the classic post-war American blues sound. - Paul Bragin A Case of the Blues is on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 91.5FM WUEV, online at wuev.org and on the TuneIn radio app.

MARCH BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. GOOSE ISLAND NEXT COAST IPA

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

I know I say this with every canned beer, but this one really seems to improve after pouring it out of the can. It transforms from a fairly unremarkable IPA to something more akin to a lager, light and refreshing, but with a touch of orange on the finish that remains subtle and sweet long afterward. It wouldn’t be unfair to favorably call this a marginally hoppier Blue Moon. It’ll definitely be a great summer beer.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

10 BARREL BLOOD ORANGE IPA

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

Rather than the typical sharp crispness that accompanies many other citrusenhanced IPAs, a blood orange infusion gives this one a darker citrus than usual, resulting in a more rounded flavor. With a mid-range IBU (International Bitterness Units) score, it makes for a milder IPA. Its character changes for the better (in my opinion) outside the can. Lighter than a winter ale but slightly heartier than most IPAs, it’s a great late winter/early spring beer.

ELYSIAN SPLIT SHOT

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

A pairing between Elysian and a neighboring coffee company, Stumptown Coffee, java is a very prominent player in the flavor profile. It’s VERY thick and dark, with chocolate and dark-roasted coffee on the front of the palate followed by oatmeal on the finish. If you like your beers light, you might want to steer clear - Guinness seems light by comparison. However, if you like the heavier side (and espresso), you’ll find a well-crafted and complex brew.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head forms on this straw colored IPA. A nice amount of hop notes control the scent. The first sip of the beer contains a good balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness, but the hop becomes a little bit stronger in the finish. This would be a good choice for people who are new to IPAs. Pair it with lemon asparagus risotto, wild boar tenderloin, nachos or buffalo chicken dip.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick white head tops this golden IPA. A burst of citrus from the blood orange in the beer dominates the scent profile. The initial tasting of the beer hits the mouth with carbonation, followed by both sweetness and tartness of the orange in the very long finish. This IPA might see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months. Pair it with fried chicken, tacos or other spicy dishes.

A thick tan head rests on this stout when poured into an English pub glass. The scent of roasted malt, coffee and sweetness from the lactose used in the brewing fill the nose. The sweetness hits the tongue first while drinking the beer, followed by coffee and roasted malt returning during the long finish. People who like stouts should try this seasonal. Pair it with beef, lamb, a hearty stew, your favorite chocolate dessert or tiramisu.

I almost bought this beer at Schnucks, so I'm glad they gave it to me to review. It pours a clear yellow color with good carbonation, but it's on the lighter side of flavor compared to other IPAs I've had. Still, the 7% ABV is nice. The finish disappointed me a little; overall, I would expect a little more out of Goose Island.

74 |

This beer pours a cloudy amber color and you can smell the hops right away - i.e., it has your average heavy hops flavors. But the orange flavor still comes across on the light side. As IPAs go, it's better than average but a little more amped up orange flavor would turn this into a truly stellar beer.

MARCH 2019 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

This a very dark beer with a nice tan head. It has a rich coffee flavor that hits you from the start. I can taste the roasted malts and the chocolate notes. This beer is very smooth and easy to drink. I'm not sure I have ever had an espresso milk stout, but I could drink it all day.

bourbon barrel ring. Similar to their Fat Tire ale (a personal favorite of mine), there’s a biscuit-y undertone that complements the caramel and vanilla notes imparted by the bourbon. These components create a custard-like combination that belies its boozy 9% ABV. Fans of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale will definitely enjoy this.

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4

There’s another collaboration this month, this time with Knob Creek distillery joining craft beer stalwarts New Belgium in throwing their hat into the burgeoning

PAUL BRAGIN - 5

A decent off-white head crowns this strong ale after pouring it into a snifter. Sweet scents from the malt and bourbon notes round out the scent profile. The bourbon flavors stay with the first taste, and a warming sensation comes

in the finish. People who enjoy bourbon will definitely want to try this limited edition beer. Pair it with barbecue like pork shoulder or ribs and finish the meal with apple pie and vanilla ice cream.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. I'm not much of a bourbon connoisseur, but this beer is full of bourbon flavor. I can detect some vanilla and toffee flavors. I have had other bourbon barrel beers but I think this is the best one yet. If anything, it almost has too much bourbon flavor for me but you get what you pay for - including a nice 9% ABV.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
