This is the main event we’ve all been waiting for. In one corner of the ring, the area’s finest members of the police department; and in the other, the top drafts from the fire department. Bragging rights are on the line as both sides battle in the name of charity for the eighth year running. Guns & Hoses always draws huge crowds to the Ford Center and keeps everyone on the edge of their seat as the heroes of our community box for glory, but the real winners are the local children with disabilities who benefit from the money raised annually, especially those afflicted with Prader-Willi syndrome. In fact, the event was initially conceived as a way to help EPD Detective Patrick Phernetton’s daughter Mykenna (“Mickey”) who has the disease. Over the years, Guns & Hoses has brought in thousands of dollars, much of which will go towards the building of a group home for kids just like her – kids that suffer from a sense of constant hunger. If left unattended, people with Prader-Willi syndrome can literally eat themselves to death. Last year, the Hoses unarmed the Guns, and the men in blue have been impatiently waiting for a shot at revenge. Of the 15 matches scheduled,

there is one in particular that is hotly anticipated: Henderson Fireman Willie Curry vs. EPD Deputy Chris Roe. Curry is undefeated, 6-0. But Roe’s record is nearly as good having lost only once his first time out. Since then, no one’s been able to take him down, and he’s primed to give the champ a run for his money. “I’ve been training off and on, but I really stepped it up in January,” Roe says. “I’ll hit it hard all the way up until two weeks before – don’t want to take the chance of getting injured.” He acknowledges that Curry is a beast between the ropes and a very tough opponent. “He moves well, has a lot of power and he brings the fight to you. He’s a good athlete.” But Roe is no slouch, either. By coincidence, his neighbor is a former prize fighter. The two have trained together and the results speak for themselves. But no matter what happens, the departments have nothing but total respect for each other. “We have a good rapport,” Roe says. “It’s kind of cool because Guns & Hoses has really brought us closer, and we look forward to seeing each other at the event.” – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com or 911giveshope.com.

Eville Con started the same way so many great ideas do – with a brainstorm. Some years ago, members of the former local anime club Otona no Otaku were hanging out discussing all things Japanese when they hit upon the possibility of holding a convention in Evansville. That initial, casual conversation amongst friends quickly turned into a serious proposal and in 2009, an inaugural, free mini-con was staged. Though it would ultimately pale in comparison to subsequent conventions, the building blocks were in place. “After the mini-con, several members of the club decided to host EvilleCon in earnest and formed Evansville Anime Convention, Inc., a non-profit organization consisting of a Board of Directors, who would oversee the annual convention,“ EvilleCon Co-Chair Robert Grimwood explains.

8 | March 2015

In 2010, the first official, full anime convention was hosted at the Old National Events Plaza (then known as The Centre), drawing around 300 people but most importantly, the attention of the tri-state. With name recognition and great wordof-mouth, attendance continued to increase each year. In fact, EvilleCon brought in 2000 fans in 2014 and expectations for the upcoming March convention are obviously quite high. “This year EvilleCon returns bigger and better than ever,” Grimwood says. “We are bringing more special guests, more panels, more events, live action role playing, video game tournaments, trading card game tournaments, table top role playing games and so much more!” Despite the growing stature of the convention, Grimwood and his fellow EvilleCon creators have not lost sight of the big picture. “We’ve done all of this while maintaining our mission to teach about and grow the appreciation for Japanese anime, culture and manga in Evansville and the surrounding community,” he says. And that’s impressive considering the amount of planning that goes into each convention, particularly now that it has reached a much wider audience. “We start at least a year in advance,” Grimwood explains. “As soon as the convention has closed, we basically start heavily planning for the next one. It is a year-round labor of love for the Board of Directors and EvilleCon staff.”

Their dedication to staging a great event trickles down to all aspects of the convention. According to Grimwood, suggestions for improving EvilleCon, including special guest requests from fans through social media sites, are seriously considered and accommodated if possible. This year’s line-up features Caitlin Glass, Cristina Vee, Karen Strassman, David Vincent, Carl Martin, Micah Solusod, Ayu Sakata, Junko Fujiyama and Shane Moore. But there’s so much more to EvilleCon 2015. Highlights include a CosPlay contest, talent show, human chess match, musical performances, an interactive murder-mystery and unique presentation panels. Attendance is expected to reach upwards of 2500-3000 fans. Not surprisingly, Grimwood is already looking ahead to next year and beyond. “The future of EvilleCon will see continued increase in attendees and partnerships with local businesses and organizations,” he says. “This growth will enhance Evansville’s image and bring prosperity to the community. As we grow, we will be able to have a greater impact on improving education through our community programs.” – TE Times: 3/27 (11 a.m.-12:30 a.m.); 3/28 (8 a.m.12:30 a.m.); 3/29 (8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.). Time flies when you’re having fun, and the 2014-2015 EPO season has been a blast – so much so that the finish line is already in sight. Only a few performances remain, but they have saved the best for last, including the much-anticipated Ultimate Glee Club show in April and the dynamic conclusion, Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean in May. But before the EPO wraps up the season, it’s time to get to know the individuals who make the orchestra such a local treasure. Spend an evening with Maestro Savia and his team as they present Concertos for Orchestra. Co-sponsored by Mrs. John Philip Robertson, the concert is a showcase for the highly respected members of the EPO. You’ll meet them section by section as they perform works that spotlight their talents, including pieces by Dukas, Elgar, Bartok, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Debussy and Beckel – a virtual who’s who of classic composers. This is your opportunity to become more acquainted with the musicians who have put the EPO on the map and who continue to dazzle us every season with inspiring, incredibly varied performances that touch on all genres. But that’s not all that the Philharmonic has in store for March. Prior to the EPO showcase, it’s all about the annual Spring Choral Concert coming to the North High School Auditorium. Featuring the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and sponsored by Friends of the Chorus, the performance is sure to be a highlight of the season, especially considering the EPC’s sheer diversity: the 150 members range in age from teenagers to senior citizens. But together, they are completely unified, a variety of voices merging to create a magnificent sound. Last year, the EPC tackled the complexity of the “Durufle Requiem,” a stirring piece in nine movements. Expect something just as challenging and enjoyable this year. – TE For ticket info, visit victorytheatre.com or evansvillephilharmonic.org.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or have gone completely off the grid, then you’re aware that the Haynie’s Corner Arts District is moving and shaking. Every day seemingly brings a new development. From the recent opening of Scott Schymik’s new Italian restaurant Sauced and the Bokeh Lounge expansion to the Alhambra Theatre renovation and ongoing construction of the revolutionary eatery and bar, The Dapper Pig, the area is bringing a new energy to downtown Evansville. It’s an exciting time for the city and a sure sign that things are heading in the right direction. Adding to the buzz of late is the planning of a new monthly art tour called First Fridays, set to begin in March and run through October. It’s a partnership between the Haynie’s Corner Arts District Association and the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana that seeks to provide a showcase for the community’s

deep pool of creative talent. Few outlets exist for local artists, but that is starting to change. And First Fridays is a huge step forward. Beginning March 6, area businesses will team up with the arts community to both promote local artists and spur economic activity for Haynie’s Corner. Participation is free for the artists, performers and businesses. While the idea of a downtown event dedicated to the arts is certainly not new – Funk in the City, for example, is a much beloved annual festival – First Fridays looks to build on that foundation and give local artists more opportunities to express themselves and, in turn, grow the community’s appreciation for the arts. Time and again, talented people in the area choose to leave Evansville in search of cities that not only value creativity but promote it all year round. By supporting First Fridays, we can give local artists a reason to stick around and make them feel like

their ideas are appreciated and welcome here. Ultimately, it’s all about having a more diverse community which benefits us all. – TE First Fridays Calendar • March 6 • April 3 • May 1 • June 5 • July 3 • August 7 • September 4 • October 2 All events 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Look forward to art, music & wine! March Madness isn’t just for the big name, Division 1 schools. When it comes down to crunch time, the excitement of NCAA basketball is over-the-top at all levels of play, and the Elite 8 Division II tournament is a prime example of just how fevered the action can get. Evansville has been lucky enough to host the event in the past and this year, the season-ending battle for basketball supremacy will once again be decided at the Ford Center. In late March, the eight teams that survive the preliminary rounds of the Division II tourney will meet in Evansville, all chasing their championship dream. Sponsored by the Evansville Sports Corporation and the University of Southern Indiana, the Elite 8 puts the city of Evansville in the national spotlight. The coverage is a major boost to our community and helps draw attention to the area, particularly the ongoing downtown renovations. But while all the perks of hosting the event are certainly appreciated, it’s the action inside the Ford Center that really makes it all worthwhile; eight teams playing at the peak of their abilities, all vying for the top spot and the privilege of cutting down the nets. – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com. So, this is it – the final chapter in the Eddie Crunk story. It’s been a bumpy ride at times but endlessly entertaining. For the last two N4U issues, I’ve charted the course of Fancy Free, Crunk’s genre-unspecific band (a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, etc.) as they met with seemingly every bit of bad luck imaginable for the better part of 25 years, the carrot forever left dangling. And yet, they admirably kept giving it a go, forever switching out members to find the perfect permutation, convinced that the big break was just right around the corner. Was it blind optimism, the naivete of youth (middle age and beyond)? Or did they simply get the incredibly short end of the stick? There are no easy answers, so perhaps it’s best to chalk it up to the old saying, ‘that’s rock and roll.’ But as I noted above, Fancy Free was difficult to categorize. It’s probably more accurate to say, ‘that’s kind of rock

16 | March 2015

and roll, bordering on country with a hint of pop.’ It doesn’t matter in the end. The fact is that Crunk and his many cronies were right there – right on the precipice. Most bands never even make it that far and even fewer stick with it when doors keep closing. But Crunk and his ultra-reliable drummer Judy Morris, in particular, stayed the course, united in defeat. It’s not unlike the story of Anvil that so captured everyone’s attention several years back. The two main players, Lips and Robbo, made a pact as teenagers to shove their metal mayhem up everyone’s ass for eternity regardless if anyone was listening. That’s what it’s all about. So even though Fancy Free inevitably fizzled out, they put up one hell of a fight and nearly scored a knockdown once or twice before hitting the mat.

Crunk eventually got up and dusted himself off and somewhere around 1997 made a u-turn into hosting karaoke, a surprising choice. “As a musician, I made fun of karaoke, but then when I got involved with it, it didn’t seem so bad,” he says. What’s not surprising is that he went at it with passion and ingenuity, quickly making his mark by becoming one of the first in the U.S. to go digital. Once computerized, Crunk’s show really took off and the money started rolling in – money that he promptly put back into securing the best amps, speakers and microphones on the market. From the nowdefunct Ginny’s in Evansville to Bully’s in Madisonville, he made the rounds, so popular that he had to hire extra DJs to cover all the gigs. By the end of 2002, Crunky Karaoke (“the name was a little bit off the wall and caught attention”) employed no less than 10. But even at the height of the business, Crunk still couldn’t shake the curse of Fancy Free. An award for top karaoke in town presented to Ginny’s listed his name as “Krumk.” Crunk/Krumk shrugged off the slight and continued to build his reputation on the karaoke circuit. Soon, he was rocking a whole new crowd all together. “So many people by now were familiar with what I was doing that I started getting calls for weddings,” he says. “I realized that I’m really good at it. I’ve not DJ’d a wedding yet where the party did not happen.” To date, Crunk has DJ’d more than 300 receptions and still finds time to do so despite owning two bars. And he still keeps in touch with old band mates. Reliable as ever, Morris currently helps Crunk out in several capacities at both at Elixirs and Milligan’s in Owensboro. But as enjoyable and occasionally lucrative as karaoke and wedding gigs can be, Crunk still misses the days of Fancy Free and the thrill of performing. “I was extremely sad that it ended. We could still be playing now – where we wanted and when we wanted.” – TE

For example, each time I sit down to create, the blank page stares back at me, intimidating and challenging me to be brilliant. Whether or not that happens is debatable, but eventually a logo or design or ad copy finds its way through the pencil to the surface and communicates something. I’ve had the pleasure of working on several local high school and civic productions with each show being so different from the others. There’s something magical about transforming a bare stage into a comic strip, or a western town, or a cruise ship or a secret garden. If you’ve ever been to the theatre, you understand my point.

Andrew Herbertz

And, if you remember Sunset Park on Evansville’s downtown riverfront and the vacant lot across the street, you can appreciate the impact Tropicana Entertainment has had on the city. Today, Tropicana Evansville is a thriving regional entertainment destination, and the 17 years I’ve spent with the company are filled with examples of making something out of nothing.

In 1989 I moved to Evansville where I knew one person. Just out of college, my goal was to find my niche in the advertising profession. Go.

I can now honestly call Evansville “My City” but not entirely for the reasons mentioned above. Evansville is home because of the friends and acquaintances I’ve made since I moved here 26 years ago. Ultimately, these relationships are my biggest accomplishment. And that one person I mentioned in the beginning of this letter? Well, that person continues to be my everything. And that’s something!

Advertising & Public Relations Manager for Tropicana Evansville / President of the American Advertising Federation of Greater Evansville

After one week, I found my first job at an outdoor sign company. One year later, I found myself working at a local television station. My third and current job is in the Marketing Department at our local casino as the Advertising & Public Relations Manager. Everyday I employ various media to promote the casino and its hotels, restaurants and entertainment. I did it. I made something out of nothing. In retrospect, I find that phrase, “Something out of nothing” echoes through my years in Evansville. On the blank page. The bare stage. In a vacant lot. An empty spot.

Carl @ the Franklin St Mardi Gras Grand Parade

You’re simply not going to find a nicer, more genuine and giving business owner than Terri Carl. Always quick with a smile, she has a knack for making people feel welcome and truly enjoys taking care of her customers. Carl treats them and her employees the same way: with love and respect. It’s no wonder then that Leroy’s Tavern – one of the “bookends” of the Franklin Street scene – is doing so well under her direction. Hard to believe, but the soon-tobe-60 dynamo has only been in the game for just over three years. Carl officially took over Leroy’s at the beginning of 2012 after her dad passed away and her mom decided she didn’t want to run the family business alone. Since then, Carl has added some tasty new sandwiches, including the popular bratwurst as well as German bologna and breaded tenderloin (all featuring Dewig meats) to complement Leroy’s famous pizzas. It all started way back in 1970. “My parents – Leroy and Shirley Baize – opened the business and they just sold alcohol and beer and little sandwiches that were microwavable, crackers and cheese, that kind of stuff,” Carl explains. On the same lot, they transformed a gas station into a place called the Pizza Pump, selling pizza, of course, and ice cream. But eventually, Carl’s parents remodeled Leroy’s and built a big kitchen. As the business grew, they introduced pizza on the menu and the rest is history – 45 years in August, to be exact. As a main player on the west side, Carl is very active with the Franklin Street Events Association and works closely with other bar and restaurant owners, particularly Amy Rivers-Word and Cindy Reitz. Together, they created 12 Months of Giving as a way to help out

non-profit organizations year round. Carl’s month is April. “I chose that because I’m going to turn 60 on April 25, and I plan to throw a big blow-out and raise money for the United Caring Shelter,” she says. “We’ll have plenty of food and entertainment – just bring a little monetary donation, and we’ll give that to the UCS.” But that’s just one example of Carl’s philanthropy. “On holidays, we always give away food. Everybody brings in covered dishes,” she says. “I’m all about give-back days. Customers will either donate money or canned goods/non-perishable items or clothes. We give to the food bank – huge amounts each year.” For St. Patrick’s Day, Carl plans to make a “big vat of brew” and sell shots for a buck. Every dollar will go to the UCS. But drinks will be even cheaper when the big 6-0 rolls around. To celebrate her milestone in style, Carl intends to sell draft beers for just 60 cents. It’s just one more way to pay it forward. No doubt, Carl’s dad would be very proud of the way she has carried on the family business, especially her dedication to making Leroy’s Tavern such a charitable operation. Of course, Carl can’t do it all by herself. Her husband Dave (“I call him superman”) is always right there, supporting her at every turn. And her employees are some of the friendliest around, hardly surprising considering who’s in charge. “They’re instructed by me to remember that they are the first face of Leroy’s in my absence,” Carl says. “I want to make sure that everyone who comes in has a good experience.” - TE

ith only two locations this side of the Mississippi, the Smiling Moose Deli is a rare sight. We got lucky when local owner Dave Deisher opened his own franchise to give us something he believed to be fresh and different.

Based out of Denver, Smiling Moose Deli has more than just sandwiches, offering homemade soups, a build-your-own salad bar and an extensive kids' menu. In addition, they serve breakfast all day and cater to vegetarians and those with gluten allergies. In fact, when Dave first opened the doors at SMD, he recalls having an interaction with a customer who he thought "...was going to hug me because she couldn't find gluten-free bread in town, and she said, 'Now my son can pack a sandwich in his lunch like everyone else.'" SMD even has their own version of Subway's Jared; a local stockbroker swears he's lost 40 lbs just by eating there. When I admitted it was my first time, Dave prepared several menu items for me, a feast fit for a queen. His reasoning was simple – “You just have to try it." Lines continue out the door for the salad bar during lunchtime, and it's easy to taste why. The plethora of items, including both typical and more unusual fare, are cut fresh every day and made to order, personalized and chopped into bite-size pieces so that you can actually enjoy your salad the moment you sit down. The Mighty Mo, their most popular sandwich, is a Stromboli/ cheeseburger hybrid that is bursting with flavor. Served on a baguette, the "cheeseburger grinder" is filled with chopped sirloin, perfectly melted American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, banana peppers, mayo and oil and vinegar, which give it that something extra. Not last and definitely not least, I tried Liz's Reuben, piled high with salty Pastrami (cut in-house daily), Swiss cheese, a choice of sauerkraut or coleslaw and thousand island dressing on a mild marble rye. It was the best I've had in a really long time and definitely the best around. With a home-made sidekick of spicy cream-of-tomato basil soup, I was sold.

Finally, I had the Harvest Wrap. Mine was on whole wheat with grilled chicken breast, dried cranberries, candied pecans, red onions, romaine and their specialty orange rosemary dressing. Filling yet light, this would be a perfect summer sandwich. I had to wave the white flag at this point, but a return is inevitable. I would say that Smiling Moose Deli is the best of its kind, implying that there are other upscale quick meal restaurants like it, but that's not true. What it is is a fresh, one-of-a-kind, affordable adventure in taste. – Whitney Patterson

Previously a pilot for Vision Airlines, he graduated with a degree in Aviation Management and received his commercial pilot license from the North American Institute of Aviation. His interest in cooking dates back to his teen years when he worked in various kitchens. “Since I was a boy I have always worked in upscale restaurants,” he explains. “From the beginning I was a busboy, a dishwasher and then a waiter for many years until I started managing.” Upon moving to Newburgh with his three daughters, Weisenborn returned to his culinary roots and opened NW Chophouse,

known for great tasting food that’s prepared fresh with the highest quality of ingredients. “I’m driven to have the area’s prime destination for upscale dining to provide the area with the highest quality dining experience,” he says. Located at the intersection of Highway 66 and State Route 261, NW Chophouse features fresh fish flown in daily and expertly butchered 100% organic beef plus a wide variety of nutritious meals and a full service bar. The restaurant is open for dinner throughout the week. Though it’s difficult for Weisenborn to pick a favorite dish on the menu to cook, he is partial to the fresh catch. “We have fresh fish flown in from Hawaii, the preparation and cooking techniques are challenging and [the] quality of fish is the best in the world,” he says. For the dinner crowd, he

recommends the daily feature, but every meal served at NW Chophouse is special. “We use only the highest quality ingredients, and the skill and knowledge of my staff sets us apart,” Weisenborn says. “From our wine and bourbon list to being the only restaurant in the tri-state that truly butchers their own meat, we do things better than anyone.” Weisenborn is looking forward to a great year and beyond at NW Chophouse, and there’s no reason to doubt his optimism. With his culinary skill and expert staff, the sky is the limit. ”We have big plans in the future to keep growing so that we not only offer a prime dining experience but also a prime location to better serve the people of Evansville and Newburgh.” – Nikki Davis

localtalent Sarah Wolfe

As if by design, Sarah Wolfe’s artistic career began with a drawing of Alfred E. Neuman. The Mad Magazine cover boy inspired her as a young child to put pencil to paper and produce her first significant work. For the former owner of the Farmer’s Daughter Bakery in Princeton, it was the first time that people stopped and said, “You can do this.” Considering Wolfe’s sense of humor and tendency towards mischief, there could not have been a more appropriate start to it all. Wolfe’s early drawings convinced her parents to foot the bill for private lessons: once a week for 10 years. Her instructor, Brenda Wick, provided an invaluable spark and, most importantly, plenty of leeway. “The wonderful thing about her is that she recognized my ability early on,” Wolfe says. “She really let me do my own thing which was fantastic.” Unfortunately, this free and accepting environment did not carry over to higher education – at least not from Wolfe’s perspective. Just a year and a half into a double major at the Savannah College of Art and Design, she abruptly left the program over a disagreement relating to a series of sculptural pieces which the school found inappropriate. “[The pieces were] female busts made out of various materials,” she explains. “I

74 | March 2015

was surprised that that happened, and I was mad enough about it that I quit.” Wolfe’s decision to walk away started a domino effect that eventually resulted in a long sabbatical from art. During the chaos of it all, she got a job at a restaurant and the “radio dial flipped.” Almost overnight, she fell in love with cooking and the camaraderie of the business. “Art can be very isolating, and I found that I needed something more than being holed up in the studio by myself,” she says. The situation was compounded by an unhappy relationship that further stymied Wolfe’s creative output. Soon, she stopped working on art altogether, a moratorium that lasted nearly six years. Back in Indiana and finally unfettered, Wolfe opened the Farmer’s Daughter in 2012, a move that in turn reignited her creative fire. In the apartment above the restaurant she had “enough room for an art studio and nobody there to criticize the process.” Ideas came fast and furious – from striking portraits to intricate sculptures incorporating everything from bones to paraffin wax. She also began a series of eye-catching yet divisive bird nest pieces that hark back to her

infamous college days, a fact not lost on Wolfe. “Now I understand why some people might not like some of my sculptures and find them unattractive,” she explains. “However, many of them are mementos of a certain time or memory or an effort to preserve those things.” Interestingly, though Wolfe never uses a brush and, in fact, admits to being “kind of terrible at it,” her portraits created with colored pencils and oil pastels are often mistaken as paintings. “I enjoy the reactions to my work, how people respond to it – and I enjoy seeing what the limitations are with my materials,” she says. As the years go by, Wolfe’s appreciation for art only deepens, and it’s clear that she never wants to revisit such a dark period of inactivity. “It’s been a wonderful return to my roots after having not done it for a long time. Art is my golden ball that I get to polish in my corner. It was almost something that I buried or hid, to be honest, because it was easier that way.” – TE Visit saatchiart.com/swolfe to view and purchase Sarah’s art. Also, stay tuned for her joint restaurant venture with Amy Rivers-Word, The Dapper Pig, coming soon to the Haynie’s Corner Arts District.

Not every band dreams of making it big. For some, the simple joy of hanging out and playing music together is more than enough reason to exist. Such is the case with local folk(ish) group, Lo and the Lolifes. Fronted by Lauren McMillen (vocals, banjo, ukulele) and featuring Chris Cubley (guitar), Randy Boreman (guitar, mandolin) and Callie Sanders (percussion), the band materialized out of long-standing friendships and, perhaps, divine intervention. “Lo and the Lolifes just kind of fell into our laps,” McMillen explains. “Chris and Randy and I have known each other for five years. We all actually started playing on our praise team at the church where my parents went to at the time. It really just kind of went from there.” What began as “goofing around” – halfhearted rehearsals that were more of an excuse to drink a few beers and have fun than anything else – slowly developed into something more promising as the eclectic tastes of each member coalesced into a unified sound. McMillen, in particular, listens to a wide swath of music. Her

influences include obvious favorites like the Avett Brothers but also country artist Mindy Smith, Alice In Chains and Metallica. Throw her love for musical theater into the mix, and you’ve got a pretty strange brew. But it all makes sense when you consider McMillen’s upbringing and the fact that her mom was a classically trained soprano who majored in music and accounting. Polar opposites on the surface, these two subjects actually complement each other quite well. In fact, McMillen eventually followed in her mom’s footsteps and went to school for music management with the long-term goal of breaking into the business as a band/ tour manager or working at a recording studio. But right now, she’s “really enjoying Evansville and what it has to offer.” A big reason why McMillen is so content with life here right now is Lo and the Lolifes. Having recently graduated from living room jams to well-attended shows at places like Penny Lane Coffeehouse and the Gumbo Cookoff on Franklin Street, the band keeps making progress but still doesn’t take itself

soundboard

too seriously. “If we mess up, we mess up,” McMillen says. “It’s a good laugh for us, and we hope everybody else finds it as funny as we do. Otherwise, you kind of lose the bounce and spring of what it is.” And people seem to like what Lo and the Lolifes are – four very talented musicians who can bounce and spring from one genre to another. A recent set list included songs by The Beatles, Joy Kills Sorrow and Dolly Parton plus originals by Boreman, all funneled through the band’s folk front. But the spontaneity of their performances is not just limited to choices in music. At Penny Lane, in lieu of a proper percussive instrument, Sanders simply beat on the back of McMillen’s chair. Yes, Lo and the Lolifes play it loose and free, a byproduct of the band’s philosophy – and general lack of practice. Even with the uptick in activity and raised profile, their once-a-week rehearsals can still devolve into a good time with friends. But that’s just fine with McMillen. “For us, this is just fun. We all just genuinely love music – that’s the whole purpose of this.” – TE

Sam Adams Rebel Rider IPA

Lagunitas Brown Sugga’ Ale

Spaten Dunkel

Daniel Knight • 2.75 At a low 4.5% ABV, Sam Adams tags this one as a session IPA. It pours a yelloworange color with a one finger head that fades down to a wispy layer. The nose is grainy with some light grassy and floral hop tones. Not especially exciting. The flavor follows suit with a biscuity, light on the hops and malt overall taste experience. Creating a truly satisfying “session IPA” is apparently a brewer’s challenge. I feel other brewers have met the challenge more successfully.

Daniel Knight • 4 Here’s an American Strong Ale that lives up to its name at a hefty 9.99% ABV. I’ve already bought a couple of these at a local watering hole. It pours up a copperish red color with an appetizing khaki head that settles quickly and leaves a telling lace display. Its aroma is sweet and roasty with maybe some molasses. The taste has flavors of caramel malts and American hops along with a light hop bite and careful balance of maltiness that plays well with the smooth finish and aftertaste. I don’t pick up a booziness as one might expect. Give this one a try. You won’t regret it.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 A Dunkel is a dark German lager. This one pours up a dark brownish amber color with a two finger head that quickly dissipates with no lacing. Its aroma reminds me subtly of dark fruit; perhaps raisin with some expected yeast smell. The taste is less pronounced than its aroma with lots of malt and something else I can’t make out. It’s very typical tasting for a dark German beer in my opinion.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head crowns this golden beer but never totally disappears. A blend of citrus and pine notes from the hops play back and forth across the nose. The hop flavor continues when drinking the beer, with a strong emphasis on citrus flavors in the very long finish. The low alcohol content makes it a great session beer, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Hop lovers will want to drink it while it’s fresh. Jabez Martinez • 2.5 This is a yellow-colored beer and very light as IPAs go. I have slowly come over to the IPA arena – or I can at least tolerate them – but this one is not very good. It has the classic hopped-up flavor but it is very weak on the finish. It seems that most IPAs make a real statement, but this one was more of a whisper. Follow us on twitter @

Paul Bragin • 2.75 A generous off-white head rests on top of an amber beer. A mixture of malt, hop and sweet notes from brown sugar balances the scent. The sweet notes remain at first when sipping the beer. The aftertaste is difficult to pin down accurately. It’s interesting to try once, but more of a novelty than a go-to choice for a drinking beer. Jabez Martinez • 4 I had never heard of this beer and was a little unsure about what I was getting. It has a nice brown color with great carbonation. I could smell the sweet hops. I could taste the smoky, brown sugar flavor, and it reminded me of baked beans. That may sound bad, but it was actually pretty good.

Paul Bragin • 5 An off-white head forms above the brown lager when poured into a beer mug. The sweet scent of malt with a hint of hops so familiar to German beers fills the nose. The malt flavors remain during tasting, with a just a hint of the hop presence in the finish. This classic German dark beer will pair well with hearty German dishes like sausages and potatoes. It’s a must for anyone. Jabez Martinez • 2 This is a clear brown beer and it looked pretty inviting. It had a light sweetness to it, but also a funky flavor I could not put my finger on (nor did I like). It sort of had that Lowenbrau funky flavor but it just was not very good. I have had other Dunkel beers but this was not close to them.

Carson’s RIPA

Daniel Knight • 4 I’m pleased to have the opportunity to review this Evansville brewed Red IPA from Carson’s. It pours up a pretty semicloudy, dark copper color with a light beige one finger head that fades to a thin layer and leaves a little lacing as you drink it down. The nose is pleasant with citrus hops and a biscuit-like yeastiness. The taste displays a hop flavor that’s slightly different than what my palate is accustomed to, but after only a few sips I was enjoying it very much. There’s a

definite malt presence there as well that balances the taste experience. I recommend this brew and certainly give it a thumbs up. Paul Bragin • 5 A thick white head tops the deep, goldenred ale below it. A strong pine scent from the hops dominates the scent of the beer. Citrus and more pine notes from the hops first come through when drinking, with a little sweetness from the malt in the aftertaste, followed by more hops. Pair it with spicier dishes. Hopheads will definitely enjoy this offering that shows why Carson’s is at the forefront of brewing in Evansville. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a light-brown colored beer with great hops flavor. It just feels like it has character behind it and has a complex yet simple flavor. I pretty much love everything that Carson’s has to offer and love to stop by to get a growler filled and get other offerings not found in local stores. You can’t go wrong with Carson’s. Keep up the good work.

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” -William Arthur Ward Well, that’s just like, your opinion, man. Ladies, have you ever just been sitting there- minding your own business, pondering work, romance, school, the meaning of life, or maybe wondering who came up with those little buttons on throw pillows that serve no purpose whatsoever? You’re deep in your thoughts, not unhappy about it, maybe actually the happiest you’ve ever been, and some strange guy busts in uninvited with something like, “You’d be prettier if you smiled more” or “You look upset. Why don’t you give us a smile?” Really? To quote a wise and sassy friend, “Sure, let me rearrange my face so it’s more pleasing to you.” Smiling is fantastic; laughter is the best medicine, yeah, yeah. We get it, but constantly grinning ear to ear like some crazed individual is not required to be a happy person. Or maybe, you know, that woman isn’t having the best day. Pro-tip: your unwarranted advice and/ or assumptions probably aren’t going to help. And if she doesn’t respond immediately with a genuine, beaming smile afterward, the last thing that will help is taking it personally, getting angry, or being dramatic about the fact that a person you’ve never met before isn’t responding well to your antics. That’s just further proof

80 | March 2015

that you probably never cared about her well-being in the first place, and it was probably just some lame attempt to get her number. So, guys, the next time you see a woman who doesn’t seem to be bubbling over with excitement, instead of telling her what to do with her face, tell a (clean) joke, comment on the beautiful weather, or better yet, mind your own business. Chances are, she’s got this, and that’s just the way her face looks. Signed, Whitney Patterson, Owner of a bitchy resting face

Horns (R) Radius-TWC

The Honey Vines

As much of a Dracula-type romance as a fantasy/horror film, there’s a lot going on in Horns. Based on the novel of the same title by Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box), the film follows Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) on his quest for the truth after being accused of murdering his long-time girlfriend, Merrin (Juno Temple). In a close-knit logging town, citizens have banded together against Perrish, completely disregarding his cries of innocence, leaving only a childhood friend, Lee (Max Minghella), standing by his side. After a drunken night with another friend, Glenna (Kelli Garner), Ig awakens to find her displaying incredibly strange behavior that is almost overshadowed by protrusions growing from his forehead. With the introduction of his horns, the film switches darkness into overdrive, gifting Ig with supernatural powers to assist in his search. From dark comedy to gory horror, each revelation finds the tone of the film increasingly more sinister. Radcliffe’s performance is award-worthy; the script is a bit scattered and long-winded. Directed by French horror aficionado Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), Horns is suspenseful, with a great cast and an original plot.

Sunday Morning EP

The local scene’s welcome trend in original music continues with The Honey Vines. The in-demand duo with the beautiful harmonies has been quietly plugging away in the studio, stealing time between day jobs and gigs to produce the Sunday Morning EP. In reality a two-track single, it neatly highlights both members; Andrea Wirth takes the lead on the emotional, piano-driven title track and Melanie Bozsa shines on the understated, acoustic “To the Moon and Back.” As advertised, their voices come together at just the right moments to lift the songs to higher places. “Sunday Morning” especially ascends during the climactic refrain: “Sing me a song / make it real.” Like an exquisite hybrid of Wirth’s favorite melodies, the track is pure release. Remarkably, Bozsa captures the same feel in “To the Moon and Back” with only soft strumming and her honey-coated vocals. More, please.

The Two Faces of January (PG-13) Magnolia Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train), Magnolia takes place in Greece. While on vacation, American swindler Chester McFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst) meet another American, hustler tour guide Rydal (Oscar Isaac). After forming a reluctant friendship, the couple quickly becomes beholden to Rydal after he becomes aware of an incident between McFarland and a private detective who followed him to Greece. After fleeing their hotel, unable to return, they realize they have left their passports behind. Their only option is to trust Rydal to help them escape arrest and get back to the states, although it seems to come easier to Colette than Chester. Tensions run higher and higher as the situation becomes more entangled and lines of decency become blurred. Writer/director Hossein Amini achieves a certain brand of anxiety that is rare in today’s cinema. With beautiful ‘60’s European scenery, a striking blonde leading lady, and intimate cinematography, the film is understandably reminiscent of Hitchcock with a soundtrack to match. – Whitney Patterson

cd reviews Smashing Pumpkins Monuments to an Elegy Martha’s Music/BMG

To be honest, I’ve pretty much considered myself done with the Smashing Pumpkins since after Mellon Collie. Machina was cuddly enough, but sometimes you should just peak and shut up. Of course, my opinion is just that, and I can absolutely tilt my head back in the sun and sing every word to every SP tune from their salad days. And no, I don’t think fans are stuck in the past or unwilling to grow along, but perhaps we’ve just trailed off somewhere with no intersection in sight. It almost seems, at this point, that Billy just can’t get enough of himself, even though every one else is pretty damn full. “Tiberius” and “Anaise!” are beautiful in a familiar way; ”Being Beige” is just that. Tepid at best, it could be served on a plate at a nursing home. Tracks “Run2me” and “Anti-Hero” are just bewildering. WTF and yaawwwn. Well-enough couldn’t be left alone with Oceania; the new deal requires Monuments and the upcoming Day for Night. The saving grace is always the voice, the incomparable sound of our angsty youth. According to the man himself (who else is in the band?), Day for Night will be trading in coos for thrashing. I’ll believe it when I hear it.

Deja Blu 5 Deja Blu 5 Self-Released

I’m ashamed to say I’ve never seen a live performance by the whole band, and I’m probably not the only one, but that doesn’t stop this hard-working local group from making sure everyone knows who they are. Frontwoman Angel Rhodes is on it, and with the upcoming release of the 5’s first album, she’s also been dabbling in solo performances, charming audiences with her infectious redlipsticked smile and Jagger-esque self-conducting. The first track surprised the hell out of me. Never for one second did I imagine a blues band making such a Portland-meets-Long Beach tune. Vocals hint ever-so slightly of a child of Sleater-Kinney and Gwen Stefani. “Empty Castle” brings the blues back around, and in an impressive way. Musicianship is solid throughout the entire album; the men are definitely not new to the game, and although mostly cohesive, the tracks are often genre-fluid. We could easily see “Drink It Away” on CMT, and the tremolo on “Bump in the Road” is beautiful, with a hell of a hook in the chorus. My personal favorite is the final track, with ska-soaked vocals and riffs that would make Santana proud. Okay, okay. Guess I’ll have to check out a show now, like maybe their CD release party at Bokeh on April 11.

cd sidebar Marilyn Manson

Father John Misty I Love You, Honeybear Sub Pop

The Pale Emperor Hell, Etc.

Marilyn Manson is outwardly about as different as they come, attracts beautiful ladies, has created and embraces a persona so fully that we occasionally forget that deep down, Brian Warner is just a man. Google “Marilyn Manson in the TRL audience before he was famous” if you’re not convinced. As human as he may be, that man is a musical genius who’s not afraid to do as he damn well pleases. On his ninth studio album, MM does just exactly that, roping in memorabilia from the past, twisting it around, and presenting it in a fashion that’s both new and old... and mostly excellent. “Killing Strangers” opens the album with that familiar, visceral sneer. Lyrics are sociopolitical throughout, covering religion, violence, war, and slavery, with a certain nudity to Manson’s (sometimes strangely Jim Morrison-esque?) vocals, which have been a bit over-manipulated in the past. At times the album feels more like a score, which makes sense as it was co-produced by Tyler Bates, and that’s quite all right; it’d be a great soundtrack for a horror film. In the central theme, Manson compares himself to Faust in “The Mephistopheles of Los Angeles,” and has been quoted saying that “...(the Pale Emperor is) payment in full...” I would have to agree. Sorrow breeds beautiful creativity- the album is dedicated to his late mother.

Björk

Vulnicura One Little Indian Releasing her first album at 12, and now pushing 50, the Icelandic siren has put her stamp on the international music industry in a way that not many can claim. Loved across the globe, but often the subject of ridicule for her eccentricity (the image of the Oscars’ swan dress is forever burned into my brain and people are still talking about it), Björk is a savant, a trailblazer, a role model for women, and more than deserving of all of those Grammys she keeps missing. Vulnicura plays out in the fashion of an impending breakup and the aftermath (sorry, Matthew Barney, that your shortcomings are on blast). It opens with “Stonemilker,” a prophetic shrug toward the end of a relationship, but leads into “Lionsong,” where she appears to get a second wind: “Maybe he will come out of this/ maybe he won’t/ somehow I’m not too bothered either way.” Later on, the startling realization of pain takes over in “Black Lake”and regret in “Notget.” This album could be the longest, saddest love song, covering every stage of grief in such a celestial, orchestral way that it makes the despair more bearable. Well played. This is by far her best album in years. -Whitney Patterson

Singer-songwriter Josh Tillman, ex-member of Fleet Foxes, is bored and in love. That’s the gist of his great new album under his moniker Father John Misty. On first listen, I Love You, Honeybear is a country/ folk album sung by a man with a beautiful, soulful voice. But that beautiful voice has a lot to say. Nearly every song is a great satirical commentary about love and life as a bored, white American.

Viet Cong Viet Cong Jagjaguwar

A few years ago, art-rock group Women released a couple albums and then disbanded after their guitarist died. Since then, the remaining members have reformed as Viet Cong, a darker, more brooding rock band. Their self-titled debut is a near-perfect postpunk amalgamation. You can hear bits of Joy Division, Interpol, and others woven into the sounds of Viet Cong. If you’re a fan of the genre, this is a must-listen.

Yung Kurt

webBoy Self-released Evansville’s very own Yung Kurt is back at it with his first project since 2014’s albums with 3D33P. On webBoy, Yung Kurt has gone full internet. Though he travels back in time to the 90s on tracks like “Tommy” and “Lyke Genesis,” Yung Kurt is nothing short of the future. Jumping on the current trends of internet hip hop, webBoy shows an artistic improvement not seen as clearly on his previous releases. You can download the EP for free at yungkurt.bandcamp.com. - Russell Finn
