exceptions, comedians are so much alike that we become fast friends and stay that way for a very long time. And when you see each other, it’s like no time has passed – you’re old buddies again. It’s a very strange thing, and I’ve never seen it with other professions. Another thing about the show is that we were very self aware. I said to the guys the very first day, ‘hey, we could get canceled before we even get a chance. We have to be balls funny every single day.’ And everybody decided to fall in line. I knew that if we did funny sh*t and were always entertaining, then even if we got canceled, we would have left it all out there and tried our best. There’s no shame in trying – especially in this industry.

So much of your act hinges on your hilarious facial expressions. How have you adapted to playing larger and larger venues where much of the crowd can’t see you close up? When you play a big room, you’ve got to connect with the people in the back of the room. So what I do is act like the first 50 rows do not exist. I’m just performing to people far away from me. Because of that, I have to allow more time in between jokes to let the laughter happen. That’s why a theatre show for me is longer than a club show – it takes longer to communicate all that. You know, the first time I played the Victory Theatre, I had such a blast. My assistant is from there and we went to Turoni’s Pizza – I got lit up on that good-ass beer they be makin’. I was almost too messed up to do the show. I had to take a nap beforehand (laughs). But I’m definitely going back there again – I just need to limit myself to one drink sampler. I’m only 400 pounds now; I can’t absorb it like I used to (laughs)!
As a comedian, what is the key to getting away with being politically incorrect? The thing is I don’t have any maliciousness. I’ll drop the N-word, I’ll drop derogatory words, but I think people understand that a) it’s never in reference to an actual person and b) it’s so universal that I irritate everybody. Everybody realizes that it’s just a joke. Nobody minds getting picked on if everybody is getting picked on. And I have to be honest with you: political correctness has a long history of being anything but correct.
You routinely perform for nearly two hours with no notes or breaks. How? Here’s the thing. I like performing. I like making people laugh and I want to make them laugh as long as I can. Two hours is the audience limit – I could go four or five hours. It’s just a conversation, and I love it. It’s therapy, and it’s fun. It’s just that the audience gets worn out. When people leave my show, their guts hurt; their jaws hurt; their faces hurt; they’ve got a headache because they’ve laughed so hard. Throw a couple of cocktails into the mix and everyone’s going home to get lucky. I’m a fat cupid. I put everybody in a great mood. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For ticket info, visit thevictorytheatre.com.

Sixth Annual Ferdinand Folk Festival Full Terror Assault
Elizabeth Cook headlines another fantastic lineup of bluegrass, folk and country musicians on September 19
Metalheads to unite for European style, open-air festival in Illinois
September 10-12, 75 bands will invade CaveIn-Rock for three days of extreme music, including such monsters of metal as Obituary, Napalm Death, Eyehategod and Terrorizer. Sponsored by Metal Messiah Radio, this is the first European style, open-air festival of its kind in the tri-state. Over three days, the biggest and heaviest bands from around the world will assault the senses on three different stages – no mercy. In addition to the headliners, other high profile acts scheduled to appear include Broken Hope, Misery Index, Revocation and Warbeast. If you love metal, you’ll never have another opportunity quite like this to experience extreme music in such an amazing setting. For the uninitiated, Cave-In-Rock is an Illinois State Park that contains the historic Cave-InRock landmark located off of the Ohio River. It has a similar ambience to the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado that is such a beloved concert venue. Now imagine 75 of the most rocking bands on earth converging on Cave-In-Rock and you’ll understand why this festival is not to be missed. Be sure to tune in to Metal Messiah Radio for a chance to win two 3-day passes to the festival and also check out their Facebook page for updates and a chance to win an official MMR t-shirt.

or the last five years, the little town of Ferdinand, IN has staged the biggest area gathering of acoustic (and occasionally electric) performers, including some of the most talented guitarists, banjo pickers and fiddlers from all over the region. The day-long festival celebrates the old school approach to music-making as epitomized by this year’s stellar cast. From Chicago’s The Way Down Wanderers to Knoxville’s The Black Cadillacs, the event features eight hours of entertainment, all leading up to headliner Elizabeth Cook. The witty country singer from East Nashville has made her mark both on the charts and as a radio host for SiriusXM. She kindly participated in a quick Q&A. Your sharp sense of humor has served you well in all aspects of your career. Is it something that comes from your family or something that you cultivated on your own? My family has always been fun and funny, and we like to cut up. Humor has gotten us through a lot of hard times. Sadly, David Letterman has stepped away from his show, but you clearly had a great relationship with him over the years - multiple appearances and on-air performances. How did your connection to the show begin in the first place? He discovered me through my radio show Apron Strings on SXM Outlaw Country. He wanted to

meet me since he enjoyed the music we play there and my fodder in between songs. Your cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes” is quite stunning. Can you provide some context for what makes that song so effectively heartbreaking? I don’t know…I’ve long had an inexplicable connection to the melodies and vibe of Velvet Underground records. I feel them and want to sing them and it just translates from there. What’s your strategy for playing a festival as opposed to playing in front of a crowd specifically there to see you? Will you adjust your set in any way? I just do what I do…I don’t patronize an audience that way. I trust that my leadership through my set of music connects whoever wants to go along for the ride. I don’t bastardize the form into a dog and pony show though there are artists that are really good at it. I’m actually pretty uncomfortable with the live performance format. How has the success of your radio show on Sirius XM impacted the music side of your career? It has won me many, many fans on a nationwide scale. It’s been monumental in helping me cut through the fray. For more info and a full schedule, visit ferdinandfolkfestival.com.

Celtic Woman 10th Anniversary Tour Global Irish music sensation celebrating a decade of song The all-female group known as Celtic Woman has dazzled audiences across the world with energetic shows featuring angelic vocals and fiery fiddle playing. From the moment the original five women came together in 2004, the concept of combining Riverdance with Irish music and modern pop took off. 10 years and eight albums later, Celtic Woman continues to pack venues far and wide. The group is set to perform a career-spanning selection of hits at the Old National Events Plaza on October 1.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
No matter how many times you do it, doing the “Time Warp” never gets old There’s no more popular cult classic film than Rocky Horror Picture Show. The delightfully twisted, campy, genre-bending musical is now 40 years old but seemingly hasn’t aged at all judging by the huge crowds that continue to pack theaters every year to pay homage. Of course, fans mostly come for the audience participation which has taken on a life of its own and is every bit as entertaining as the film. No doubt, there will be plenty of wackiness on display when Rocky Horror plays at the Old National Events Plaza on October 3.
The 10th anniversary tour lineup features Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, Lynn Hilary, Alex Sharpe, Mairead Nesbitt, Mairead Carlin, and Susan McFadden. These six beautiful and supremely talented women are carrying on the incredible legacy of Irish music and at the same time, offering a refreshingly dynamic take as heard on such standards as “Danny Boy” and “Mo Ghile Mear.” But they also do stunning covers of contemporary tracks like “You Raise Me Up” and old favorites, including “Scarborough Fair.” One of the group’s most beloved set pieces is Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” which never fails to mesmerize. Backed by a full band, the women of Celtic Woman are free to roam the stage and engage with the audience, belting out each number with astonishing vocal power. Nesbitt never stands still for long, always on the move as she attacks her fiddle. It’s an electrifying show that keeps people coming back for more. The show starts at 7 p.m. For ticket info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com.

The film was originally released in 1975 but didn’t make much of an impact. In fact, it was generally panned by critics who were unimpressed by such an odd mixture of comedy, horror and sci-fi all rolled into a musical. The plot was deemed even more bizarre – something about an engaged couple, a castle and a mad scientist named Frank N. Furter (who is actually an alien transvestite). Regardless of the absurdities – or perhaps, because of them – moviegoers eventually embraced the overt campiness of Rocky Horror and slowly a cult classic was born. Audience members will be allowed to bring props to the showing, including rice, newspaper, a small water pistol, rubber gloves, confetti, toilet paper, toast, cards, flashlights, party hats, noisemakers and bells. However, no food or drinks are allowed. The movie starts at 11 p.m. For tickets, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 2015 Annual 5K run/walk raises money for breast cancer awareness and research, saves lives
O
n Sunday, September 27, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will once again take place on Evansville’s east side, starting and finishing at Eastland Mall in front of JC Penney. The annual event, which includes a 5K run, 1 mile family run/walk and many other activities, draws more than 10,000 participants each year. The day’s festivities begin at 6:30 a.m. with race registration. If you prefer to sleep in, you can register online (komenevansville.org) ahead of time. At 7 a.m., those interested can attend the Service of Hope, which according to Executive Director Sheila Seiler is “a really wonderful, celebratory church service” designed to get you pumped up for the event. 8 a.m. will bring the Parade of Pink and the opening ceremonies, when breast cancer survivors are celebrated. The 5k race begins at 9 a.m. and at 9:15 a.m., the 1 mile family fun run/walk will begin. The run/walk format is designed so people of all ages and fitness levels can participate. There will be an initial flight of competitive

timed runners, followed by the larger flight of walkers. Seiler says that there are many more people who walk than run, and most of them are “running or walking in honor or memory of a loved one.” There are activities for all age groups at Race for the Cure. The Komen Kids Zone is the place to be for children ages 5-10 who are registered in the race. Kids will have the chance to decorate cookies (in the appropriate colors of pink and white) and make crafts. This year there will be a superhero theme, so kids can expect to see superheroes “milling about the kids zone,” according to Seiler. New to the race this year is the Color Zone, sponsored by Old National Bank. Here, participants will take a short quiz designed to inform them about breast cancer and then run a short stretch during which they’ll have pink paint thrown on them. If you’re interested in just where the donations and race dues are going, Seiler says that “75%

10th Annual Water for People Benefit Concert Herman’s Hermits and Gary Puckett to rock the Victory, help save lives on September 24 Incredibly, approximately 6,000 people – primarily in poor countries – die from water-borne diseases every day, despite all the advancements of the modern world. Water For People (WFP) wants to create a new normal. Since 1991, the non-profit organization has worked towards a world where everyone, no matter where they live, has access to clean, safe water, adequate sanitation facilities and basic health services. The group is dedicated to finding long-term solutions to these most pressing issues – to educating and empowering the millions of people living in unhealthy conditions all over the world. But it takes money to make change, and WFP needs your support. You can donate at any time to the cause, but you can also help by attending the annual WFP Benefit Concert at the Victory Theatre. This year, the legendary Herman’s Hermits featuring Peter Noone will headline with Gary Puckett & The Union Gap lending support. Get ready for a hit parade, including such classic songs as “I’m Into Something Good,” “There’s A Kind Of Hush,” “Woman, Woman” and “Young Girl.” Both groups hold a special place in the history of rock and roll and to see them together on one stage is a rare treat. Last year’s benefit concert was a sell-out – just like the previous year and the year before that. In other words, this is a hugely popular event. More importantly, it continues to raise big bucks for WFP which ultimately translates to lives being saved. So be sure to get your ticket soon! The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit thevictorytheatre.com. For info about Water For People, visit waterforpeople.org.
Robert Cray Band
Blues Hall of Famer to grace the Victory Theatre with his guitar genius on September 20 Rightly considered one of the greatest guitarists of our time, Robert Cray has been playing the blues for over four decades. He’s performed alongside such legends as Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry, all the while developing an entirely unique style. In 2011, Cray was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in recognition of his singular talent. The 62-year-old from Georgia truly arrived with 1986’s Strong Persuader, Cray’s fifth album and first to crack the Billboard top 20. The single “Smoking Gun” also charted high and helped to raise his profile both in the U.S. and abroad. While subsequent albums failed to reach the same heights, Cray’s reputation as a phenomenal showman has kept his career on the move ever since. He routinely tours with his seasoned backing band, maintaining a fiercely loyal group of fans who hang on his every bended note. Cray’s latest album, 2014’s In My Soul, hit number one on the U.S. blues chart, proving that even after 40 years, he’s still a viable musical force with plenty of gas left in the tank. Expect to hear a great mix of new and old, including such Cray live favorites as “Right Next Door,” “Chicken in the Kitchen” and “Side Dish.” Every show is a celebration of his guitar genius, 40 years of blues packed into one incredible evening. The show starts at 6 p.m. For ticket info, visit thevictorytheatre.com.

he EPO’s powerful conclusion to the 2014-15 season, Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean, left everyone wanting more, and the wait is finally over. On September 27, the new campaign begins with the remarkable talent of violinist Joshua Bell. The native Hoosier will ring in the 2015-16 season at the Victory Theatre with an opening night performance meant to commemorate USI’s 50th anniversary and featuring classic pieces by three of the
masters: Brahms (Academic Festival Overture), Bruch (Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor) and Beethoven (Symphony No. 3: “Eroica”). Playing the big stages since the age of 17, Bell has worked with many of the world’s greatest conductors and orchestras, and he’s delighted for the opportunity to spend time with the EPO – especially considering the weight of the occasion. Maestro Savia’s standards are high for opening night, but Bell is more than ready to meet expectations. Of course, Bell’s greatly anticipated performance is but one of many to come over the course of the 2015-16 season. The EPO’s tagline, “Bringing

Here Comes The Bride… by Dakyissa Hall
Ask the Pastor with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church
Q: Is drinking a sin? Our question is, “Is drinking a sin?” Simple answer: no. Drinking is not a sin. Jesus and his disciples (and just about everyone else in his day) drank wine. It was reverenced as a gift of God produced from the earth of God’s creation. It was blessed with prayers. It became a central symbol in the Christian practice of holy communion. Drinking is not a sin.
S
ince many of you are preparing to get married, I wanted to dedicate this article to you. As you are preparing to walk down the aisle, don’t forget to take time for you. Make sure you have a full understanding of who you are and your purpose in life. You’ll also want to make sure you have a full understanding of your fiancé. I learned long ago that you don’t fully know your mate until you have seen him in all of his moods - extremely happy, mad, and everything in between.
It’s not a sin to drink. It’s a sin to allow drinking to take over your life. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. in Evansville / 812-423-6297

• Make sure you are using your face and eye primer. These are critical for long lasting results. • Have an oil mattifier and blots papers handy. They are always great at helping eliminate shine.
• When doing your lips, fill them in completely with lip liner prior to putting on lipstick. This will help your color stay longer. Another great option is to use a lip stain. I prefer the stains from Kat Von D. Don’t forget, at Beauty Date we offer private parties and coaching. These two are a great way to get hands-on guidance in creating your wedding day look.
Addiction leads us away from being the people God intends for us to be. Addiction shatters what life is meant to be: destroying relationships, damaging our bodies, shattering our emotions, leaving us an empty shell that is hardly recognizable as being who we were.
Intoxication, the degradation of relationships, chronic (and fatal) illness, the loss of family, friends, employment, self-respect? These are signs of a much deeper problem. The good news: alcoholism can be successfully treated. I have dozens of friends who are living proof.
• As always, you’ll want to ensure you have developed a solid skin care strategy. You want your skin to be at its absolute best prior to the big day.
• Remember to get waterproof eyeliner and mascara.
Drunkenness is a problem. Drinking to alleviate pain and frustration, drinking to mask other problems, drinking to “forget” is a problem. Drinking as medication leads to a pattern of drinking that easily becomes addiction.
A drink with friends? Why not. A beer watching a sporting event? Why not. A glass of wine with a delicious dinner? It is no sin.

Breast Cancer Awareness A few years ago, I met a woman who was suffering from breast cancer. My heart broke as she told me her story. I couldn’t believe she was going through a double mastectomy. She went on to tell me how she never took checking her breasts very seriously. She was in the army and in fairly good shape; it never crossed her mind. Before we ended our talk, she told me to make sure every girl and woman I knew understood the importance of regular breast exams. So, as promised, I’m using this platform to educate: breast cancer can affect any of us. Please remember to regularly check your breasts. Until next time ladies, stay beautiful, stay positive, and stay strong. DaKyissa

10 Questions for Darin Terrell
News4U Account Executive 1. Nicknames I’ve had over the years... Until about four years old I was called Dari Blueberry. That’s ridiculous. Then in school it was D.T. which is stupid and took no thought. Now it’s D-Train or Darin Train. 2. Most noticeable aspect of my personality... Depends on who you ask. I would hate to say for myself, because there will be a reader out there that will think “he’s cocky and arrogant.” Wait, did I just accidentally answer the question? 3. Number of hairstyles I’ve worn to date... Three or four. Right now it’s just a high fade with a little gel. 4. Favorite horror film of all time... The 2005 version of Amityville Horror. There was one in 1979, but I never watched it. 5. My ideal Friday night... Sitting outside around a campfire with a group of friends having an ice cold beer. 6. Best concert I’ve ever seen... Make fun if you must, but Bruno Mars at Bridgestone in Nashville a couple years ago was probably my favorite. I also enjoy Kid Rock concerts and country festivals. Kind of weird, I know. 7. Likelihood that I’ll run for public office one day... Zero to none. But if it gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with Megyn Kelly then I would consider it. 8. What makes me happy... A lot of things; but an ice-cold beer on a Saturday watching the Florida Gators is at the top. 9. What I most fear... Spiders. As a young kid I watched the movie Arachnophobia, and I’ve been scared of unfinished basements ever since. Also, World Press reported in 2008 that Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders kill 6.5 people per year. 10. Best part about being an Account Executive... Working with an awesome staff and having a team atmosphere. Working with successful business owners is really cool, as well.

Goodbye, Evansville I’ve called you home the majority of my twenty-nine years of life. I’ve left you only for vacations and college but always faithfully returned to you. I’ve explored all directional sides of you, run your races, ridden and driven your streets and walked your sidewalks. I’ve volunteered for you and worked to help your people struggling with housing and trauma. I’ve grown-up with you and witnessed your many faces of change. Regardless of our long history, I’ve recently felt a pull for something more than a vacation. I left you in February for adventure out west and in March for traveling the East Coast. Now I’m back once more to say goodbye to a loved one forever and to visit you one last time. You have provided me with many life lessons and will continue to hold many of my friends and family, but I must go. Thank you Evansville for everything you have done for me - both the good and the bad. Although I may not return, I will take a piece of you with me and always consider you my hometown. Sincerely Yours, Jessica Rakestraw

upcoming events will feature plenty of indoor and outdoor activities such as a Zombie Walk on Friday evening, a much-anticipated Cosplay Contest and the ever-popular Tri-State Gaming Trailer. In addition, vendors will be on site and artists on display in Exhibitor Hall at the Holiday Inn off of Highway 41. The Holiday Inn Evansville was chosen due to Bartley’s good relationship with the hotel staff. She’s staged previous conventions there and always been very pleased with the service. And then there’s the simple fact that rooms are available on the premises which makes it easy for attendees to move back and forth between events and their lodgings.
TRI-CON 2015
The final countdown is on to Evansville’s inaugural fandom convention at the Holiday Inn, September 25-27 “When people go to conventions to meet their idols of film and TV, what they’re looking for is an authentic, honest moment with the talent,” explains Tri-Con PR Manager, Bruce Ripple. “Since the very first Tri-Con meeting, we made it a point to approach the actors, artists and individuals that are known for giving the fans real interaction and great experiences.” A little over a year ago, Ripple was vending at a local convention when he was approached by Amy Bartley, a veteran of the fandom scene. She was in the planning stages of what would eventually become Tri-Con and needed knowledgeable people to help pull off her vision of an all-inclusive event covering anime, gaming, fantasy, pop culture, sci-fi and more. Though initially hesitant to commit, Ripple soon agreed to join the team. “What kept me coming back to the meetings was that Amy and her sister Jamie and husband Jeff are kind

of like the trinity of administration that runs Tri-Con,” he says. “Between the three of them, they have 11 years of experience running conventions. From the very first meeting, they hit the ground running and knew exactly who to call. They really have their stuff together.” The group wasted no time lining up a guest list representative of a broad spectrum of interests – familiar names from film and TV sure to draw crowds. Some of the stars scheduled to appear include former Power Rangers Steve Cardenas and Jason Faunt, Michele Specht from the Star Trek Continues web series and actress Gigi Edgley (Farscape, Beastmaster). But that’s just scratching the surface of the talent confirmed to headline Tri-Con. There are many more guests on board, including actor Mike Edmonds (Star Wars Episode VI) and actor/ puppeteer Toby Philpot (Dark Crystal, Return of the Jedi, Labyrinth). Plus, the convention

With the big weekend fast approaching, Ripple is confident that everything is in its right place and going according to plan. He has no set expectations for the inaugural Tri-Con but is certain that they’ve put together something very special that Evansville can proudly call its own. “What will set it apart from other conventions is simply the passion of the people involved. It’s all about giving the people that show up the best weekend of their lives.” For tickets and more info, visit tri-con.net. television to me. I said “hey, man, just sign me up.” It was the best decision of my life. I matured more in the military. Then I got into an accident which immobilized me from being in the infantry, and I didn’t want to stay behind a desk. Is that what prompted you to move to Nashville and become a guitar-builder? Haha! I served my time and when I was getting out, a buddy of mine had a job at Gibson Guitar and I ended up getting a job there. With the military mentality, if people would use and hire veterans more, they would get better work done. I started at Gibson as a sander and I did so many guitars that they couldn’t keep up with me and they had to promote me. I got to the point where I was doing everything - for artists like Kid Rock, Keith Urban, Lenny Kravitz. That’s the mentality I had.
An Interview with Actor Santiago Cirilo “Julio” on The Walking Dead
F
or Santiago Cirilo, being offered a twoepisode main role on one of the most popular TV series was a dream come true - he just didn’t know it yet. Born in Puerto Rico to a large family before moving to a small town in Ohio as a child, what Cirilo did know from a young age was that he was going to take his struggles and turn them into gold. After storming through his early adulthood and taking every opportunity that presented itself, he landed the role of “Julio” on The Walking Dead. We caught up with him at the Pineapple Project for the Tri-Con pre-party. Before your Walking Dead role, what inspired you to get into acting? Actually, I had a lot of energy in my life - I was bullied because I was really poor. That

was pretty much my defense, being a joke, a practical joker. Instead of the bad stuff attracting to me, I used that funny stuff and acted a clown to protect me and at the same time have people pay attention to me more as a person than someone who’s broke and ghetto-looking (laughs). I wore baseball cleats to school. I think I got stronger that way, you know? Learned fast, per se. And after college, you decided to join the military? Well, actually, it wasn’t after. This is a funny story, too. My freshman year was stressful, but I had a great mind, a great GPA. And then the second year was good. Then the third year I started partying and partied out, pretty much. I was moping on a bench and a recruiter came up

How did you get into The Walking Dead? [Being in Nashville] I caught the entertainment bug. I networked and within a year, I was on big shows. I have an agent, and I built up a good resume before The Walking Dead. I got it through submission without an audition. I got a phone call from my agent and she sounded like she was having a heart attack - “Oh, my God, you’re on The Walking Dead!” I was like “um...” and it was silent for a while. “Isn’t that the zombie show?” I did two episodes with them, it was good, and it turned out that I was plastered on their advertisements all over the globe. It was a great feeling. What is your passion when you’re not building guitars, acting, going back to school, and performing paralegal duties? I’m trying to film a movie for veterans I wrote called Veterans’ Homecoming. We’re trying to raise $40,000. What we’re doing is trying to help veterans fight PTSD. As most people don’t know, (an average of) 22 veterans commit suicide every day. I’m trying to put some money into the system, into different organizations. A lot of the film earnings will go to that. [The movie] It’s different stories of friends of mine that went through it, and I put it all into one character, and at the same time it ends up being like a Hallmark movie. I sell t-shirts, and I’m promoting it myself with my own money (laughs). You can say I’m an actor selling t-shirts out of the trunk of my car. - Whitney Patterson For more info about Cirilo’s new roles and Veterans’ Homecoming, catch him on Twitter.

Evansville Thunderbolts New tri-state hockey team ready to take the ice, take on the competition Anticipation has been building for the inaugural season of the Evansville Thunderbolts. Around town, the team’s mascot, “Maverick,” has been making appearances and helping to boost the excitement for our new NA3HL squad as they prepare to try and skate their way to the top of the junior hockey league. The action gets started on September 4 as the ‘Bolts head to St. Louis for a two-game face-off against their Midwest Division opponents, the Junior Blues. But local fans won’t have to wait too long for the first home series at Swonder Ice Arena. On September 18, the Point Mallard Ducks swoop into town for two big games. The process of assembling the ‘Bolts squad has been a community affair with tryouts open to the public. GM/Head Coach Scott Frankhouser continues to build a solid team as the days count down to the first drop of the puck. Allowing hockey fans to take part in the pre-season activities is just one way that the ‘Bolts are making everyone feel like they are in it together. This welcoming relationship between the team and the community has already translated into ticket sales which are moving at a brisk pace and at family-friendly prices, no less: all 22 games for only $70!
In addition, ‘Bolts pocket schedules for the 2015-16 season are currently available at Swonder Ice Arena and will soon be all around the city and community. For more info, visit evvbolts.com and follow the team on Twitter and Facebook.

hen La Campirana co-owners Abraham Brown and Ezequiel Campos tired of traveling to larger, neighboring cities such as Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis for authentic Mexican fare, they decided to open their own restaurant. Brown, a Californian who grew up in Texas and whose family hails from Guadalajara, Mexico, and Campos, who was born and raised in central Mexico, are no strangers to the very authenticity they were seeking. They’ve just barely gotten started at their Washington Square Mall food court location, but vibrant photos of their mouthwatering food have been popping up all over social media and word of mouth has made it a preferred destination, drawing particularly large lunch crowds and foodies. After living just outside of Santa Ana, California for two years before settling back into Evansville, I quickly started longing for the exact menu La Campirana provides. True street tacos are nearly

impossible to find in this neck of the woods. Served on warm corn tortillas with various meats, diced onions, and cilantro, they may seem simple but when topped with salsa verde, hot salsa, and a squeeze of lime, simplicity goes out the window. LC offers a multitude of options - al pastor (marinated pork), asada (steak), pollo asado (grilled chicken), chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage), birria (rib meat), lengua (beef tongue), picadillo (ground beef), chicharron (pork skins), and vegetarian options such as rajas pepper slices and refried beans. Besides tacos, they offer quesadillas, gorditas (stuffed griddle-cooked corn dough), sopes (fried corn bread), and tortas (Mexican sandwiches with telera bread). Made with the freshest ingredients, their drinks are colorful and interesting. From jugos (juice), chocos (shakes), licuados (smoothies) to the highly traditional mangonada and their own Diablito, they’re full of vitamins, anti-oxidants,

and bursting with flavor. Chamoy, a sweet/ sour/ spicy Mexican condiment made from pickled fruits, and tamarind candy/paste (a tangy fruit) are often present in desserts and drinks. They also serve bionoco, a Mexican parfait, and elote en vaso, a dish of warm sweet corn topped Mexican cream, Cotija cheese, and Tajin mix (a fruit seasoning made from chile peppers, lime and salt). Whatever your appetite or diet, La Campirana has something for you. Food brings people together, an idea that Brown and Campos extend while sharing their passion with customers. The care with which they prepare every item shows dedication to customer service, and the level of hospitality is what one would expect from family. Open Mon-Sat from 11-8 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, LC is a must-try. Follow La Campirana on Facebook for appetizing photos and specials, and expect many return visits once you’ve eaten there. - Whitney Patterson

Owner of Beef 'O' Brady's
Fall is everyone’s favorite time of year when it comes to craft beer, and Beef ‘O’ Brady’s is going to be the leader in getting the best available. Here’s a list of the top 5 craft beers that we feel are a must try in the Evansville market. •
Samuel Adams Octoberfest should be in most bars in September. But only a select few will have this beer for any length of time, because it goes fast in most places and only a limited supply is shipped to Indiana.
•
Traveler Jack O Shandy is a pumpkin spice brew that tastes like pumpkin pie in a glass. The hint of cinnamon gives this beer a much nicer finish than others. I can’t wait to tap this one.
•
Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest is a copper-colored blend with a butterscotch and caramel aroma. This beer goes down smooth and will be an enjoyable alternative to the usual suspects.
•
Southern Tier Pumking has come on strong the past couple years as one of the go-to fall seasonals. Pumpkin beers have taken off since 2013 and although they are sweet, they are smooth and very satisfying for those who want something different.
•
Southern Tier Harvest Ale is new to our lineup and is an English style ESB that’s a little more hoppy than malty. This is a 6.7% ABV crafted brew that you absolutely must try.
All of these beers go great with any type of food and go down best while watching your favorite football team. Beef’s has 29 TVs along with the NFL Sunday ticket lineup. Also, Beef’s is the only place you can come watch your favorite football team and get to listen to your game on your smartphone with the Soundog app on your phone. Looking forward to seeing you on Sundays this season.

Back to School! Western Kentucky college students return to the classroom with hopes and dreams for the future
For wife and mother of three, Jennifer Bowlds, Western Kentucky University is not just convenient; it also offers a great Masters program for her course of study – social work. The 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Social Work Student on the Owensboro campus greatly appreciates the knowledgeable WKU staff and their determination to make each student successful. Apart from caring for her three daughters, Bowlds enjoys running/exercising and hanging with friends and family. Lacey Parhan majors in Criminal Justice at Owensboro Community Technical College. A member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, she plans to transfer to the University of Louisville to become a constitutional attorney and Air Force JAG Officer through ROTC. Parhan loves the OCTC campus atmosphere, quality education and smaller class sizes/helpful faculty. She spends her free time playing guitar and volunteering for the Wounded Warrior Project and at the Wendell Foster Center. Originally from Eritrea in East Africa, Hussen Abubeker has come a long way to study at Henderson Community College. He majors in Computer Information Technology with a concentration in Network Administration and also serves as Student Government Association President. After graduation, Abubeker would like to transfer

to George Mason or Western Kentucky University to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. He appreciates the low cost of tuition at HCC and the great faculty and staff. In his spare time, Abubeker likes to exercise and play soccer. 28-year-old Aja Bryant is attending HCC for an Associate Degree in Science and preparing to be a nurse. A proud mother of a young boy, she’s originally from South Carolina but loves the beautiful Kentucky scenery. Bryant works with the HCC mentoring program to help African Americans succeed in college and plans to return home to be closer to family after completing her degree. She is grateful for her wonderful experiences at college, particularly with the students and staff. Since arriving in Kentucky, Bryant has learned to ride horses, an activity she absolutely loves. Simply put, western Kentucky has a number of great colleges that offer a high quality education with reasonable tuition costs. HCC, OCTC and WKU serve a wide range of students of all ages and from all walks of life. Their degree programs (many of which are offered online) are first rate and challenging regardless of the course of study and classes are taught by experienced faculty with expertise in their fields. And if your goal is to move on to another college at a later time, there’s the comfort of knowing that credits will transfer. Best of all, the student to teacher ratio is comparatively low which means that you get the attention you need and deserve. It all adds up to an investment that will more than pay off for those who persevere. As studies have routinely shown, there are significant differences in earnings and employment by educational attainment level, both nationally and locally. So do yourself a favor and check out these western Kentucky colleges. It may just be the best decision you’ll ever make. For more info, visit Henderson.kctcs.edu, Owensboro.kctcs.edu and wku.edu.

What’s Cookin’
Fetta
118 St. Ann St, Owensboro • 270-926-0005
P
erfectly nestled just off of Owensboro’s gorgeous riverfront park is an intimate yet bustling little pizza shop called Fetta. After enjoying a late morning stroll, it’s a great place to grab a slice, take in a dough-tossing show, and for the more adventurous, sip on one of their inventive and refreshing cocktails. The decor says big city, hip and streamlined, with plenty of natural light and opportunity for watching the sun set if you stop in later. A chandelier flanks the entrance, which may be difficult to notice at first because one is instantly greeted by a huge case of their daily featured slices. With intoxicating smells and a friendly staff, it’s obvious why this newer establishment has grown so quickly. My Fetta experience began with their Greek salad. With fresh ingredients, including romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, Asiago cheese, Kalamata olives, and in-house Greek dressing,

it was the best way to whet my appetite for their garlic bread knots. These are not just any regular old dough balls. The dough is made fresh every morning, so they’re fluffy, not too chewy, and smothered in tangy butter sauce, Romano cheese, and served with your choice of flavorful marinara or hot cheese sauce. Now, I love pizza, but I’m typically basic on toppings - what matters to me most are the crust and sauce. Fetta, however, has some imaginative ideas on what constitutes a pizza topping. When in Rome, they say, so I tried something different. The lightly-browned, hand-tossed crust was a sturdy but soft vehicle for crispy bacon, chopped green apples, red onion, and gooey mozzarella. Of course, while apples on pizza may be surprising, they also offer mashed potatoes, mangoes, and white beans as toppings. An unusual pair, but it’s hard to see a problem with mashed potatoes
September 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
and pizza together, right? Despite nearing a full stomach, the ricotta and basil was difficult to pass up. The creaminess of the ricotta was balanced by the crunch of the crust, and the peppery aroma of the fresh basil suited the slightly sweet red sauce. Finally, upon promising owner Mike Baker that I’d try a specialty cocktail made by Annette, the Peach-tini was a wonderful dessert. Shaken to foam and garnished with cinnamon, it was like drinking peach cobbler ala mode spiked with vodka. An A-plus experience, Fetta should be on anyone’s food adventure list. The vibe is just as great as the food and drinks, and the location is prime. Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sun-Thurs and until 11 p.m. on weekends, they offer downtown delivery and post their featured slices on Facebook daily. Come on in and taste for yourself! - Whitney Patterson
New fitness event at Diamond Lake Resort will challenge the hardcore enthusiasts, welcome beginners
Mud runs have been all the rage over the last several years, and the Daviess County Relay for Life chapter is looking to capitalize on the popularity of such events with a new fundraiser to fight cancer. Not your typical Relay for Life challenge, the Owensboro Mud Run has been designed with both the hardcore enthusiast and novice in mind. To achieve this delicate balance, organizers have scheduled five timed competitive heats every half hour starting at 8 a.m. to be followed by fun heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. This strategic stacking will allow participants to go at a self-timed pace regardless of ability. The course is a rugged 5K trail with 20-25 planned obstacles, including mud crawl areas, wall climbs, a tire field, water slide and huge straw mountain. In the timed heats, everyone is expected to complete the obstacles, but participants may enlist help from fellow runners. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers. During the fun heats, runners may skip any obstacle that they are unable to complete. The Mud Run is scheduled for September 19. The cost is a $40 donation to the Daviess County Relay for Life. Diamond Lake Resort is located at 7301 Hobbs Rd. in Owensboro. To sign up/donate, visit cancer.org.

Carson’s Brewery’s Owensboro Expansion Distribution hurdles cleared, the craft brew king targets western Kentucky
Hello Again, Owensboro with Kelly Lynn Annin
I’d been away for approximately 30 years when the spin of my tires finally slowed their roll and landed in my hometown of Owensboro. Luckily for me, Facebook had kept me in touch with anyone who was relevant in my youth (and perhaps a few that I would later find delete-able), so everyone was still recognizable. But what wasn’t recognizable to me were the vast improvements to the greater downtown area. Having come from as far away as the South Pacific, the West Coast and the Rocky Mountains, I had grown accustomed to the subtle charms those locations possess. But let’s be frank, those were not the memories I had of the town that I so desperately escaped from all those years ago. But as I rounded the bend just after Glenmore and passed in front of Owensboro Grain, the city showed me a side I had yet to see. 2nd Street was bustling with people from CYO brewery where I tried my first bourbonflavored beer (LOVED it). I continued on past the intricate new paint job on the buildings to Nona’s, where I fell in love not only with the owner, but also the juice bar in the back. My feet instinctively led me towards the water where I discovered the new and vastly remodeled Smothers Park and could not believe my eyes. Where once a sidewalk stood, I saw something for everyone - a place for live music, a fountain for infinite gazing, sturdy swings for lovers to sneak in a sunset kiss, paths for hand-in-hand strolls or jogging for the strong of body and mind and so much more. Then, out of nowhere, the cherry on top of the cake... There stood a handpainted piano to let it all out on at the end of an extremely long drive. It had me thinking, perhaps the old adage is correct: “Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder.”

Carson’s Brewery founder and owner, Jason Carson, knows Kentucky well. In fact, he lived in Lexington for a number of years before moving to Evansville. So, it was no surprise when his successful line of craft brews started making the rounds in the Bluegrass State about a year ago. However, due to an unusual distribution network, he was unable to partner with Louisville or Owensboro – until now. In July, Carson’s finally secured a deal with Dauntless Distribution – known for carrying high quality brands – to help get such tri-state favorites as Red Dawn Amber Wheat Ale and RIPA to the good folks of western Kentucky. “An ideal fit,” according to Carson, Dauntless is just one of the seven distributors that the craft brew company works with throughout the state. Currently, Carson’s products are carried in most liquor stores, craft-centric bars and restaurants. Soon, they’ll be on the shelves in most Kentucky Kroger stores. Carson and the rest of his team from Evansville are truly excited about the opportunity to introduce both Louisville and Owensboro to their line of craft brews. As noted above, Red Dawn has been a huge hit locally and keeps gaining more fans every day. The response from western Kentuckians so far has been just as enthusiastic. With increased distribution, the sky’s the limit for Carson’s – especially in the Owensboro market. So be sure to keep an eye out for Red Dawn and other Carson’s Brewery standouts at all your local liquor stores, bars and restaurants as well as Kroger. For more info, visit carsonsbrewery.com.

Third Tuesday Writers’ Coffee House Popular Owensboro literary group launches 21st season in new venue
“Poetry readings were the ‘in’ thing in 1995,” says Barbara Bennett, co-founder of Third Tuesday Writers’ Coffee House. Bennett, who was taking David “Bart” Bartholomy’s creative writing class at Brescia University (then College) at the time, says that she and her group of fellow writers wanted a local poetry reading venue – “so Bart and I started one.” The first season of what became the Third Tuesday Writers’ Coffee House was held at the former Fox & Field, where Fetta Pizza is located now. This season’s coffeehouse, which opens September 15, will be held in the Theater Workshop of Owensboro, located at 407 West Fifth St.
Fifth Annual East Bridge Art & Music Festival Owensboro event keeps growing beyond organizers’ wildest dreams
The first Third Tuesday Writers’ Coffee House, free to the public as always, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by The Coffee House Band, comprised of Matt Branham, Dan Hildenbrandt and Court Lewis. The evening’s main event will feature writers of poetry, short fiction and song from Evansville and Owensboro, including Tom Raithel, Mark Williams, Teresa Roy, David Bartholomy, Shannon Collins, Matt Branham, Mari Stanley, Barbara Bennett and Jason Rhodes. Additionally, all writers are invited to share their original works during open mic.
Sisters Christy Chaney and Katherine (Kat) Taylor were used to collaborating on successful ventures; Chaney and husband Travis own Studio Slant, for which Taylor serves as curator. However, even they couldn’t predict the incredible response to their artistic vision for Owensboro. The first East Bridge Art & Music Festival in 2011 featured 25 artists and drew 1,000 attendees. Last year’s festival featured 65 artists and drew more than 10,000 visitors. On September 5, Smothers Park will be home to the fifth annual East Bridge Art & Music Festival, and attendees will be able to enjoy viewing and purchasing artists’ wares, from photography and paintings to pottery and jewelry. “You name it,” Taylor says, “and we probably have an artist.” The festival also provides the opportunity for the public to create art. “We will have a free kids’ art tent,” Taylor says. “Kids get to come in and create six-to-eight pieces of art to take home with them. We will also have the chalk contest again, which is always a big draw!” Taylor dreams of a two-to-three-day festival that lines the streets of downtown. She says, “That’s a great dream to have, and it’s totally going to happen; I just feel it! The festival is already starting to run itself, thanks to our awesome community; we just give it a little extra push. That’s what is so cool about Owensboro – everyone is willing to help out and be a part of the community. Without their support, the festival wouldn’t exist!” - Missy Brownson The festival is sponsored by local businesses Jagoe Homes, Independence Bank, Glenn Family Services, Don Moore Automotive, E.M. Ford, Raben Tire and Welborn Events. For more info, visit eastbridgeart.com.

“Third Tuesday has evolved into a venue that offers consistently highquality, original material that appeals to both mature and youthful audiences because the stories, songs and poems are engaging and fresh – and therefore pleasing to witness,” says Bartholomy. And what does he think of the longevity of the event he co-founded two decades ago? “I’m somewhat surprised, but mainly just pleased that there are so many talented people – both Third Tuesday veterans and newcomers – who are eager to share their creativity with our welcoming and appreciative audience,” Bartholomy says. Bartholomy and Bennett continue to assist with the production of Third Tuesday Writers’ Coffee House; their fellow event producers include Matt Branham, Shannon Collins, Tonya Northenor, Jason Rhodes and Mari Stanley. - Missy Brownson For more info, visit facebook.com/thirdtuesday.
Incredible lineup of bluegrass and folk bands set to help preserve the legacy of the IBMM The highly-anticipated fall concert series to benefit the International Bluegrass Music Museum is now in full swing. Late last month, North Carolina’s Mipso took to the stage at the Museum’s theater in downtown Owensboro for the opening performance with six more dynamic shows to follow over the next four months. The bands scheduled to participate in the concert series come from all over the country, including states as far away as New York and Colorado. All have joined together in the name of preserving the legacy of bluegrass music by raising funds for the IBMM. Featured Bands: 9/12: Misty Mountain String Band (Kentucky) 10/5: Trout Steak Revival (Colorado) 10/22: J.D. Wilkes & The Tillers (Kentucky/Ohio) 11/20: Wood & Wire (Texas) 12/4: The Giving Tree Band (Illinois) 12/17: Driftwood (New York) The proceeds from the concert series allow the museum to continue offering music educational programs and cover general operating expenses as well as fund the Video Oral History Project (VOHP) and artifact collection efforts. Season passes are available for $100 each; passes include one ticket to each show included in the series. Individual show tickets are also available for purchase for $15 per ticket. For tickets and more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org or call 270926-7891. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2015

around the track with Billy Egeler Hello again, race fans! Another month is in the record books, and the end of the season is getting closer and closer. This time of year is bitter sweet for so many but for the rest of us, well, let’s just say it’s a welcome time of the year. In years gone by, so many tracks around the region have increased the length of their seasons which makes it tough on budget racers and track officials. I can remember the days of a 20 race schedule per season. Granted, this season several tracks will struggle to reach 20 races due to early season weather but many tracks now have schedules with 30 plus races on them. On average, I attend 60+ motorsports events per season. I consider myself lucky to be able to do this, however, so many are barely able to make 10 races a season. The travel costs have increased over the years which has hurt not only fans but racers as well. This is one common complaint the racers have, and it’s 100% legit. The cost of all forms of racing has

increased. Horsepower costs money and we all know this, however, the racers are running for basically the exact same payouts as they did in the early 80s. Is the blame to be placed on the tracks? Not entirely. The tracks have also seen increases in operational costs, including insurance increases, tax increases and fuel increases not to mention that payroll, food and supplies are not free. Let’s face it, these tracks have to be able to make a little money to continue to open the gates week in and week out. How can we get these payouts to increase? What is the magic answer? There is none. We have to have cars at the tracks to attract fans. Tracks have to have fans to make expenses. What can a track do to bring fans to the track many ask? It can simply be put like this. A track has to have ENTERTAINMENT - it’s what this sport is centered around for fans. Close competition is entertaining to those who appreciate motorsports. The tracks can also look at adding events to their race card like stunt shows, concerts and carnival rides anything DIFFERENT is going to put people in

the seats. Race track preparation can also add to the excitement. Recently, a friend of mine made a valid point on social media saying basically the same thing. As a racer, nobody wants to go to a hammer down race track. Such track conditions take less (for lack of a better term) “skill” to drive and it’s extremely hard on equipment. Looking back on seasons gone by, tracks used to have multiple grooves and were race-y from top to bottom. This type of racing is what puts the racing back in the hands of the setup guys and drivers. It’s also easier on equipment and takes the high horsepower out of the picture. Let’s hope this becomes the norm quickly and maybe we’ll see our counts increase again. In other news over the past month, Owensboro’s JD Beach was able to clinch the MotoAmerica SuperSport championship with one race remaining. This is an incredible feat Cont. on page 71

events. You owe it to yourself to attend these races just in case the gates never open again.
Hunter Baize of Bremen, KY made his first start in ARCA competition in August. Hunter drover the Kenny Schrader-owned Federated Auto Parts #52 to a top 10 finish in that first race. At the end of the month, Hunter will again drive for Schrader at the sole ARCA dirt race on the Springfield (IL) Mile. Baize also recorded his 2nd CRA Late Model win of the season. This is an asphalt racer you are going to want to watch for sure!
I would like to invite everyone out to Owensboro’s Texas Roadhouse on the evening of September 22 for a motorsports vehicle display and benefit auction during Regional Motorsports Power Hour. This event will benefit nine-year-old Harlie Bryant of Hartford, KY and the Hope for Harlie fund. Harlie has a rare form of brain cancer and has recently encountered some other medical issues. Our racing family is again going to do whatever they can to help this family. A few of the folks donating items are: Darrell Waltrip, Kevin Harvick, Nicky Hayden, 97X and many more!
Windy Hollow Speedway revved up for what’s been dubbed as “The Final Tour” in August. The demise of the legendary 3/8 mile D-shaped dirt track is up in the air, however, Curtis Howard partnered with longtime racer Jimmy Westerfield and his wife Misty to get the gates opened for 5 races. The first 2 events were huge to say the least, and the support for the old track was outstanding. September will see the gates swing open for the final 3

music the vocalist as well as bassist Goff while McCool mainly stayed on the sidelines. But eventually, the four musicians came together to form Future Thieves in the fall of 2013. The buzz was immediate. “The response has been more than we could ever ask for from all our local friends and fans,” McCool says. “Every show we play in town gets bigger and better, from playing in bars to playing live radio broadcasts to playing festivals.”
Future Thieves One of the area’s most promising bands, A Hero En Route, headed to Nashville a couple years ago to give it a go in a bigger market. Their John Mellencamp-meets-Blues Traveler sound played well here in the tri-state and seemed a sure thing in the Music City, but unfortunately, the guys just couldn’t make it work for various reasons. But that wasn’t the end, exactly. Instead, AHER split down the middle. One half moved on, while the other half – bassist Nick Goff and lead guitarist Austin McCool – decided to forge a new musical path. Within a short time, the two met vocalist/rhythm guitarist, Elliot Collett.
“Nick and I worked at a country club as our part-time job,” McCool explains. “[It] was just replete with talent. At some point Elliot was hired on, and we instantly became good friends through mutual musical interests.” Over time, through drink-fueled jams, the bond tightened. There was just one missing element. Drummer Gianni Gibson made the move from Los Angeles to Nashville about a year after the AHER guys arrived. Mutual friends brought him to the attention of Collett and soon, he was invited to writing sessions with
While FT’s sound doesn’t stray too far from the previous blueprint, there’s a maturity in the musicianship and deeper lyrical meaning that really seem to connect with people. Horizon Line Teaser, the band’s first EP, is clear evidence of such an evolution. The 2014 release displays a confidence that really shines through in “Soon” and the title track, both standout cuts. A full-length album featuring one of FT’s best songs to date, “Rosie,” should be out this month. And while some bands wear out on the road, touring has only made the band stronger and more creative – and hungrier to make it. Their chances of doing just that increased exponentially after placing near the top of a contest with an incredible prize: a slot at the famed Bonnaroo music festival. Though FT didn’t ultimately win, they still got invited – and still can’t believe it. “It was an absolute blast. We played on the first day around 6:30 p.m.,” McCool explains. “It seemed as though all the festival goers had their camps set up and were ready to hear some music by the time we took the stage. [We] played to a solid 500-600 people. It definitely lived up to our expectations.” With a new album on the horizon, so to speak, and another series of tour dates on the band’s schedule, Future Thieves look set for a big fall/winter. Whether the band “makes it” – whatever that even means in today’s music industry – or not, one thing’s for sure: their fan base is getting bigger by the day. “At this point now, we’re starting to head back to a lot of markets that we’ve hit before, and it’s surreal to see audiences growing in repeat cities and venues,” McCool says. “It’s starting to take hold where people remember our show and want to see it again.” For more info, visit futurethievesmusic.com. The Cold Stares Part 2 of 3 part series A new documentary detailing the trials and tribulations of Nashville’s The Cold Stares, Look Over Yonder Hill, is set to air this month on WNIN PBS. It’s a fascinating look at two blues-rock musicians battling against an army of industry reps, health issues and more, yet still managing to keep their heads on straight and their sights set on making great music. Tristate natives Chris Tapp and Brian Mullins are, in fact, at the top of their game, having recently released two fantastic EPs, Resonator and Look Over Yonder Hill.
off and the deals being offered from the new labels were drastically different. The thing is, if we had signed with either of those labels before I got sick, we would have made an album and by the time it was going to be released our A/R
Last month, Tapp walked us through the beginnings of The Cold Stares up to the independent recording of 2012’s A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind, providing examples of the smoke and mirrors of the music business. Part two delves deeper into the fog. The Cold Stares have been on the cusp of signing a major label contract at several different points. Have you been at all surprised by the complications involved in negotiating a fair deal? Yes. To be honest, we believed what all bands believe going in – that we’d see some money, tour with some big acts and be able to sustain ourselves financially. We had Capitol Records and Hollywood Records both at the table prior to me getting sick and both of those deals were what we were hoping for. But after I had recovered, both of the A/R guys from each label had been fired, streaming and Spotify had taken
would have been fired, the album shelved and we probably would have been dropped. Neither of us has ever cared about getting rich – we just have wanted to make enough to justify the work we put into it. Between the two new EPs we have racked up a combined 15K streams/ downloads but that hasn’t equated financially to the cost of a microwave. That’s the main issue we have with the record labels. As discussed during the documentary, an engineer assisting with the recording of the
new material made a play to wrestle control of the project, in a sense. Were you totally blindsided by his actions? Totally. We hadn’t discussed pitching the project or anything at that point – we were just trying to make a good recording of these songs we had been playing out. We paid him cash for the hours he worked and there was never any discussion whatsoever of a back end deal where he would be paid in a percentage of sales or anything. We were trying to get back into the studio with him to finish some overdubs, but he had to take a week break for a trip to LA. When he came back, we kept trying to get in the studio to finish, but he kept saying he was busy. And then we got the email. Basically, it said that while he was in LA, he and his manager pitched his talents as an engineer to some labels and played some of our music [as an example of his work]. A couple of the labels expressed interest and evidently, over the span of a few weeks, those labels had discussed us openly with the LA industry circle, and now we had lawyers, management and labels interested in speaking with us. Our engineer felt that since he was the one who played the songs for them, he deserved a cut of the deal. Actually, we were fine with that and would have totally compensated him for the opportunity that arose from it, but before that discussion even began, we were handed a contract from his lawyer that said what they felt he was entitled to which was ridiculous. He was holding the songs hostage until we sorted it all out. But no label was going to sign us and have us record our debut album with an engineer that had never produced an album before. Stay tuned for pt. 3 next month. Look Over Yonder Hill on WNIN PBS: 9/10, 7 p.m. & 9/11, 10:30 p.m.

film just misguided and uninformed. So after the first day I just stopped reading and listening. How challenging was the role of Freddy Krueger? KR: While Freddy was a challenge, it was less of a challenge from an acting perspective, and more of one from a fan/pop-culture standpoint. Freddy is so beloved by horror fans, that there’s a fine line for getting the character right. If I were to act too much like Robert Englund, fans would criticize that I was trying too hard to imitate him. If I were to go a completely different direction with the character, fans would be upset that it was such a far departure. In the end, Robert Englund is the definitive Freddy. No one can replicate what he did with the character, and no one ever will.
The Confession of Fred Krueger Louisville-based illustrator, writer and filmmaker Nathan Thomas Milliner is a brave man. Indeed, it takes guts to take on one of the most revered movie franchises in the history of film. But the HorrorHound Magazine artist credited with the covers for such DVD/Bluray special editions as Halloween II and The Howling was undaunted by the prospect of resurrecting the iconic and endlessly scrutinized character of Freddy Krueger. Beloved by horror fans around the world, Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street series is an institution. And yet, Milliner confidently envisioned a not-for-profit fan film - a prequel to the 1984 classic that stayed true to the original vision of Krueger as a hobo drifter arrested for a series of child murders. Set in 1973, The Confession of Fred Krueger stars local actor Kevin Roach as the “Springwood Slasher” and was produced by Owensboro’s P.J. Starks.
you able to put that out of your mind while filming? NM: You can’t make a film like this without realizing that fans are going to beat you up, not understand your intentions and are going to be very close-minded with it. So even though you know it is coming, it’s never easy to deal with. I don’t think it’s the insulting and name-calling that bothers you but rather when people are just wrong in their assessment or understanding of what you are doing. But after the first day of the trailer going live and reading all of the excitement and the confusion and hate, you really start to understand that most of the criticism is
Milliner and Roach kindly fielded questions about the film which premiers at HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis September 11-13. Obviously, a movie such as The Confession of Fred Krueger is going to be dissected to the nth degree by the horror purists out there. Were

How long did it take to develop the script once you made the decision to pursue the Freddy project? NM: Not very long. I wrote it around 2012 or so and in many ways it wrote itself. I’ve been a Freddy fan since I was 12. I’ve read the books, watched the documentaries, and I just knew the characters and the world and the history. I had a lot of this stuff in my head for over 25 years. The only hang ups were when I needed to come up with new stuff to fill in the plot holes as this is a prequel and we never really got a clear-cut story from the films. So, I had to solve problems after the initial writing session but in reality, the script was very easy to write because the love was there and the knowledge from being a long time fan was there. How did you prepare for each day of shooting? KR: I definitely revisited the early films, especially the original. I watched all of them, but we wanted our focus on the early ones. Freddy was scarier then. As the franchise went along, Freddy became more comedic, and while that is fun and enjoyable, it wasn’t Wes Craven’s original idea of Freddy. He was a loner janitor,

film (cont.) and pure evil. He was the boogeyman lurking in the shadows. He was, above all, a child murderer. I had to keep my focus there. There are a few winks and nods to the humor in our film. Even early on in the original films we see a side of Freddy where he laughs at himself. He genuinely enjoys what he’s doing, sinister as he is. I had to get into that headspace: killing is what he loves. What are the odds that Wes Craven will see Confession? NM: It’s probably a 50/50 shot that Wes would one day watch this film. I won’t hold my breath. If people like it enough and push it on him enough he may give in and watch it, but I would imagine he’s not very interested in watching stuff like this. My nightmare would be that he would be offended by it or hate it. He’s my hero. I’d never want to do anything to rub him the wrong way. Earlier this year I had the honor of doing the cover artwork for the new Blu-ray release of Shocker for Scream Factory. The day the art was revealed someone sent me a tweet from Wes on his twitter account. He had shared my artwork and said he really dug it. That made my day; hell, my year. Confession was made not-for-profit and strictly out of love for the Nightmare series. But what if it really takes off after its release what if there is interest from the film industry? NM: I never made this film for attention or for gain. This movie has been in my mind since I was 12. I am simply living out a dream. This was my vacation to Disney World - getting to walk with Freddy Krueger in his boiler room over the course of a few months while making my own Freddy movie. I have no unrealistic notions of
this movie being different than any other fan film out there. The response has been a tad unexpected but it’s very flattering that people are excited about it and saying nice things about it. I’ve even had some fans suggest I direct the new reboot that was recently announced. That is insanity. Every day I am asked about a possible DVD or Blu-ray, t-shirts and posters, and I have to say the same thing over and over. I am sorry, but no. There will be no merchandise sold. This movie is for free. Check out the trailer for The Confession of Fred Krueger on YouTube.

film that you’re essentially role models for young women who might want to embark on this crazy filmmaking ride? S: What the cinematic world needs now more than ever are original voices telling stories from their own perspective. It is an honor and a privilege for Jen and me to be able to do this. There are always more reasons not to, but it’s worth all the sacrifices. J: Encouraging strong and positive body images for little girls and telling them to stand up for what they believe in and not be afraid to be who they are is so important to us.
Filmmakers Interviewing Filmmakers: Bilinksi & Starks vs. The Soska Sisters
I
ndie filmmakers Jakob Bilinski (Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh) and P.J. Starks (Volumes of Blood) have put Owensboro on the map with a number of well-received horror productions over the last several years. Now, they’re stepping out from behind the camera to interview talented filmmakers they’ve been privileged to call friends. This month, Bilinksi and Starks take on Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka the Twisted Twins) who jumpstarted their film career in Canada with the low-budget feature, Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Their next project was picked up by Universal and was followed by See No Evil 2. Along the way, the Soskas developed a great working relationship with WWE Films, and now they’re set to release a new film, Vendetta. Bilinski and Starks had the opportunity to find out what makes the Twins’ demented gears turn. PJ: Being a fan of classics like Evil Dead, I appreciate the ingenuity it takes to pull off practical effects. Why is it important to keep this art alive? S: They have this life all on their own and you have spectacular talents, like the team we had

on American Mary and you have something that invokes real emotion in the cast and crew and that builds this unique energy.
J: We got into horror films because we loved practical effects. Our mother explained at the age of nine that everything in Poltergeist was created by artists with the intention of scaring the audience; we were hopelessly hooked. I don’t want this generation to lose that. JB: Do you feel a responsibility or pride in

PJ: How much does Hollywood creep into the “decision making process”? Jen: As a filmmaker you need to stay true to your vision. It’s no surprise that Robert Rodriguez and so many other great directors work with the same people over and over again. I will say that our experience working with Universal has been amazing. Ultimately, our goal is to have our own self-maintaining studio. We’d like to be able to help out the indie darlings out there that might not get a chance elsewhere. JB: You have the coolest movie title ever in Dead Hooker In A Trunk. Did you have the title in mind or did you label the film later in the writing process? J: A friend who is far wiser than me told me, upon hearing the title Dead Hooker In A Trunk, that it didn’t matter what the film was about. A title speaks volumes. It’s your first impression. It has to smack you in the face and demand you to pay attention. You need to do your film a solid and give it a fighting chance. Your title needs to not only be unforgettable and stick out in a sea of thousands of movies titles, it needs to make someone hear it once and think, “I wanna see that.” It was the first thing we had.

The Ghosts of Wheaton Chandler native and Castle High School graduate Thom Wilder is back with another edge-of-your-seat page-turner. The Ghosts of Wheaton picks up where his previous effort, The Road to Paradise, left off, chronicling another of the tri-state’s most lauded high school football programs: the Tigers of Wheaton Warrenville South High School in Illinois. 70 years after the program’s most legendary footballer, Red Grange, donned the orange and black, the team claimed its first-ever state title with an improbable victory over perennial power Joliet Catholic Academy, 40-34 in double OT. Ghosts takes you inside that incredible 1992 run that resulted in one of the most exciting final games in the history of Illinois high school football. With the finesse of someone who’s truly studied high school football, Wilder smartly examines how a team can rise from the ashes by approaching the game with class, sportsmanship and dignity and in turn, how following these principles shapes the future of young athletes. Ghosts also takes a close look at the coach who drove his players to achieve their very best with a spiritual yet hard-nosed attitude, acting as a father figure and respected leader. The story of the Tigers’ 1992 title run is made even more dramatic through the reflections and observations of two dozen coaches, players, administrators and fans, all who were a part of that miraculous season in some way. The Ghosts of Wheaton is released on September 5 and will be available at fine bookstores everywhere and online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
John Thurgood “I Looked Up Tickets To Paris Again” I looked up tickets to Paris again, and I thought about calling you. Well, if I’m going to be completely honest, I drove to the liquor store, bought a bottle of bottom shelf bourbon, drank half, thought about calling you, posted a few photos on the internet—the ones we took from the top of the Notre Dame that one time—then I looked up tickets to Paris. I really did think about calling you again afterward, though. I think about calling you most of the time. That is most of the time that I’m awake and walking around, talking to people, possibly waiting in line at the bank. I’m usually holding my phone with my contacts open to yours with my finger just hovering over your phone number. It seems that the only power I have left in our relationship is not pressing the call button. I look at the shadowy avatar that represents your face in your contact information, and think, Not today, Hootie, not today. I would call you, but I know what you would say. You would act like nothing happened. You might even pretend we’ve never met, or that we’ve never stood over the city of love and confessed that we wanted to hold one another’s hand. You would probably ask me from where I had gotten your number or for whom I was calling. Not that it hasn’t happened before, and I would feign concern that I might be inconveniencing you again, as I had for most of the duration of our time together. I would apologize, and you would hang up without a word of sympathy, because that’s your style. And I get it. You’re a baby and the dolphins make you cry, but there’s nothing I can do, I only want to be with you. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2015

Lobeck’s
Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA After playing their 238th straight sellout at the Beacon Theater in October, 2014, the Allman Brothers Band called it a career. Months earlier, Gregg Allman recorded a solo show on the band’s original stomping grounds of Macon, GA for a live album and DVD. At the time of this performance, the ABB was approaching the end of the road, and Gregg himself was 66. What level of quality can we really expect from a Gregg Allman solo show? The exact same level fans have enjoyed for the last 45 years. His voice is soothing and pleasant, while conveying more emotion with each word than other storytellers manage over an entire career. Gregg’s solo show is easier to digest than some of the band’s more jam-oriented shows, while remaining a memorable experience. The majority of the songs clock in around five minutes, allowing for 16 songs over a 90 minute show. The band’s staples are here, but Gregg also dedicates time to some lesser known solo material. This is a tight, wellcrafted performance led by an ultimate stage general. For established fans, this is another welcome addition to the Allman catalog. For newcomers, this is a great starter album - and a wonderful album for a dad to share with the kids. Remember, if you don’t talk to your kids about music, “Top 40” radio will. The more you know. - J. Robert Lobeck

Everything & Nothing
(The Significance of Dr. Dre’s New Album) Do you remember the days of physical music collections? I sure do. My giant, overstuffed book of CDs was one of my most prized possessions during my formative years. But alas, I am a dinosaur at 33. In 2015, the majority of us have accepted our music being stored in the “cloud” for easy access. Sacrificing little pleasures, like booklets of album artwork, photos, or maybe lyrics. Come with me, as we step into a brave new world of owning everything, and nothing at the same time. August 6 marked a significant day in music. It was time to dig out my white sox cap and creased khakis, because we were finally getting an album of brand new material from legendary producer, Dr. Dre. It also marked another step in the streaming world toward artist exclusivity. This isn’t a brand new trend. Services such as Spotify and Pandora have made deals with artists for exclusive rights to their libraries. However, it has usually revolved around back catalogs. Dr Dre’s newest offering is not only an Apple exclusive for streaming and downloading, it’s not available in any physical form at all. After 16 years, if you want to listen to this highly anticipated release, you can go to iTunes, or you’ll be signing up for an Apple Music membership. Up until very recently, it didn’t matter all that much which major service you used for your music streaming needs. They all run about $10 a month and offer similar content. Even exclusive back catalogs eventually made it over to other services after a given period. Now, it’s looking as though artists will begin to make new releases exclusive to a specific service. If you want full access to all your favorite artists, your monthly music bill could go from $10 to $30, $40 or even $50. It may seem a small price to pay for the anywhere, anytime convenience of streaming. But having access also requires you to keep up with your monthly internet bill, and mobile data fees. All the while, you own nothing. If you stop paying, it all disappears. We are becoming a society of renters, forgetting that it’s better to own. Our appreciation is deteriorating because we have everything, all the time. Simultaneously, we are handing over control of our lives by owning less and less. This is a small example of a much larger problem. I’ve got some stuff you should read.

A meme has been popping up on all social media outlets lately: “Anybody have plans to stare at their phones somewhere exciting this weekend?” And I know, I’ve mentioned it before, and I am often just as guilty. Besides the addiction to apps and games and memes and cat pictures, I find myself stressing about the tone of text messages and length of response. I see that face of yours by my chat bubble! Dude, you’re on your phone 24/7, so I know you received my text. Sigh. It was time to admit my problem. When I’m out and about with friends, having dinner, or working, I put myself on phone probation. It can be hard, but just leave it in your car or stick it in a friend’s purse. You’re already where you want to be, so just relish the moment. Your mom won’t have a heart attack if you don’t text her back for a few hours about that “one movie” with that “one guy” that you watched together “that one time.” Your significant other probably knows where you are and when you’re getting together next (unless, of course, you’re doing inappropriate things, then shame on you and I hope your phone falls in the toilet), and your
boss will see you at work. I’m not suggesting that you shut yourself off from the world, but instead, embrace the moment. You don’t owe anything to anyone except yourself, and the people you love who love you back just as hard. Chances are, they’re right in front of you, and you don’t realize it because your phone is glued to the tip of your nose. “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction.” -Einstein

beer reviews Traveler Pumpkin Shandy
Daniel Knight • 2.75 Here’s a light, wheat-based seasonal brew from Traveler. FYI, Traveler is a Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams) brand. It pours up a sort of murky brownish copper color with an airy off-white two finger head that doesn’t linger long. The nose is initially like other Shandys but with a subtle pumpkin and spices twist. I found the flavor to be less impressive than the aroma with that familiar tingle on the tongue and some spiciness but very little pumpkin. There’s nothing undesirable about the taste; in fact, it’s very light and quite drinkable. It’s just not that pumpkin-like in my opinion. Paul Bragin • 3.5 A thick white head crowns this deep golden beer. The scent of pumpkin and spices dominate the nose in a manner reminiscent of pumpkin pie. The spices hit the tongue immediately with the first sip, followed closely by pumpkin, with the spices returning heavily in the finish. If you enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie during the fall and winter months, this seasonal beer would make a good complement during the holidays. Jabez Martinez • 2 This is a hazy, amber-colored beer. It’s technically a “Shandy,” but frankly, it’s just average. It just seems to be overly watered down with minimal flavor. I could hardly taste the spice at all and really would not have known what type of beer I was drinking unless I read the bottle.

Smuttynose Pumpkin
Daniel Knight • 3.25 Reviewing “flavored beers” isn’t generally my favorite reviewing gig. This one caught me off guard, though. It pours up an attractive clear orange color with a pretty white head that settles to a cap and lasts a long time. Admittedly, the aroma isn’t its strong suit with mostly malts, spices and a light pumpkin touch. Nice enough, though. The flavor is where you’ll really pick up on the pumpkin. It’s very present but not over the top or artificial. There’s some nice nutmeg and clove spiciness there as well. Pumpkin puree is actually a real part of the brewing process and the underlying ale has some real character as well. Thumbs up. Paul Bragin • 3.75 A decent white head tops this beer. The amber beer below boasts an equal measure of pumpkin and spice notes when first smelling the beer, although the spice notes soon come to the foreground. The pumpkin notes remain when drinking the beer, but with a lighter taste than what many expect when drinking a pumpkin ale. The spice notes also add some flavor during the finish. This might be a good choice for people who avoid pumpkin ales. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a hazy, amber-colored beer with a slight aroma of spice as well as a faint spice flavor. I would consider this a “light” pumpkin beer compared to others. It was easy to drink; I just wish it had a little more flavor.

Goose Island Oktoberfest
Daniel Knight • 3.5 This one is the 2015 incarnation of Goose Island’s classic seasonal. It seems to me that they tweak the process on this one a little bit every year. It pours a clear orange color with a one finger light beige head. Its aroma is of dried fruit and caramel with some breadyness. The flavor is moderately sweet with some spices, biscuity and caramel notes and minimal to no bitterness. Certainly a respectable Marzen beer. Recommended. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick off-white head forms on this reddish copper-colored beer and never completely evaporates. The sweet smell of malt fills the nose while sniffing the beer. The sweet malt flavors continue when first drinking the beer, but a very slight hop presence also appears in the finish. This excellent example of an Oktoberfest beer will pair well with classic German dishes like sausages (especially when cooked in the beer) and apple strudel. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 I am a big fan of Goose Island, but this Oktoberfest is just a little better than average. It does have sweet malty flavors but they are on the lighter side. I think they could have boosted flavors up a little to make this a great beer.

Root Sellers Root Beer
Daniel Knight • 2.75 I have a hard time taking this one real seriously. It pours up with an airy head that fades away quickly. Its aroma is very root beer like. The flavor is clearly as root beer like as its nose. It’s significantly less sweet than another root beer flavored beer that’s very popular these days. There’s a bit of boozyness about this one, too. Again, probably mostly because it’s less sweet, so the ale flavor comes to the top a little bit more. It doesn’t taste bad and might especially appeal
to someone who doesn’t enjoy a real beer or ale flavor. The brewers claim that it’s made with botanicals, molasses and pure cane sugar. Beware that with its sweet, soft drink like flavor, 6.7%ABV and pint can packaging, one should proceed with caution. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick tan head forms on this alcoholic root beer, but disappears fairly quickly. The black liquid left behind seems a bit darker than a standard root beer. The scent smells like a stronger version of classic root beer. The familiar taste of root beer coats the tongue, but the flavor is not as sweet as the non-alcoholic version from your childhood. Enjoy it on a hot day and in a float like a regular root beer. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I have tried the other alcoholic root beers that have been showing up and this one is the best. It has a deeper root beer flavor than the others, and I noticed that it has a 6.7 % ABV. I have found that some similar alcoholic root beers have an odd finish, but this one is pretty solid. The only downside of these beverages is the high calories they pack.

Welcome to Me (R) Alchemy
Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig) spends her days conducting simple routines, such as re-watching Oprah episodes, buying lottery tickets, going for long walks, seeing her therapist and organizing her apartment by complex categories. As a sufferer of borderline personality disorder who has recently stopped taking any medication, she begins an optimistic foray back into herself, an uneven adventure fueled exponentially when she wins a lottery jackpot of eighty-six million dollars. After permanently moving into a casino hotel, she buys her own talk show to pursue her dream of becoming the next Oprah. What follows is a multidimensionally-comedic, riveting, endearing and winding view into mental illness, executed in only a way Wiig could portray, both deadpan and stunningly emotional. With surprising supporting roles by Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) and Wes Bentley (American Beauty) and authentic performances by royalty Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack, it’s neither lacking in talent or depth. Director Shira Piven (Fully Loaded) displays promise for film, and with excellent writing by Eliot Laurence, it’s difficult not to smile and shake your head if you’re not wildly uncomfortable. The title is more than appropriate. It’s almost impossible to not get sucked into Alice’s world.
Almost Mercy (R) Almost Mercy follows the long-time friendship of Emily (Daniell Guldin) and Jackson (Jesse Dufault), two misanthropic teens from opposite sides of the track who share a bond of being social outcasts with simmering darkness. Lackluster attempts to fit in become unnecessary when they form a co-dependent relationship held together by Emily’s slightly larger ability to empathize. When Jesse is sent away for snapping violently at bullying classmates, Emily is left to her own devices. Upon Jesse’s return, he appears to be enlightened, on medication, and all seems right in their world perspective. Jesse is content because he has a plan. The rest is a morbid and bloody attempt at some form of justice, touching on current social issues, the pharmaceutical industry, the struggle of undeveloped minds dealing with dysfunctional home lives, and the rationalization of their actions. A must-see for horror film lovers, a little camp goes a long way, and what’s possibly the most frightening aspect is the reality of it, up-close and personal, and of course, the gore and the lengths some will go to preserve the only relationships that matter to them. Featuring roles by horror alumni Bill Moseley (House of 1000 Corpse) and Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th series), it’s a little Rob Zombie and a smidge Quentin Tarantino.

Interscope In a year of surprise album releases, this one is perhaps the most surprising. Dr. Dre, one of the biggest figures in hip hop, has only released two solo albums prior to Compton—the most recent in 1999. So, after 16 years and the cancellation of his planned Detox album, Dre drops Compton to tie in with the theatrical release of Straight Outta Compton. It’s fantastic. Guest appearances include Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and others. Compton is being billed as the 50-year-old’s final album, and it couldn’t be a better ending to his solo career.
Wilco
Star Wars dBpm
Wilco have yet to release a bad album in their 20 year career. I may be biased, but seriously, they haven’t. Star Wars sounds just like a Wilco album, no doubt, but it’s their best in years. It finds the band experimenting a bit more than their latter work while maintaining a tight, concise sound. The album is a bit more rock-oriented than folk, and most songs are short and sweet. It’s a great addition to their catalogue and has a lot of replay value. Wilco fans have probably already devoured the album, but everyone else should give it a spin, too.
Mac DeMarco Another One
Captured Tracks Another One is the latest release from Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco. DeMarco calls it a “minialbum,” and it feels just like that. The album is short and feels miniscule compared to his two prior albums. There are good songs, but the release feels like it’s meant to hold over fans until he releases something proper. The title track, “Another One,” is the standout song on the album and one of the best he’s ever written. Fans should listen to the album, but don’t expect it to be nearly as good as Salad Days or 2. - Russell Finn

cd reviews Girlpool Before the World Was Big Wichita Recordings This best-friends, lo-fi, drummerless punk duo (Cleo Tucker/ Harmony Trividad) has a lot to say, mostly in unison and often in sister-worthy harmonies. Before the World Was Big is about more than the unease of entering the future as a late teen. In an unembellished but not barren way, the tunes examine the addled, grubby dichotomy of “freedom” as an adult versus the simplicity of adolescence. Not even 20, both young women are in the perfect realm of understanding, bobbing uncertainly with nonchalance, funneling their doubts and nostalgia into a sunshine-after-the-storm compilation of relatable and wise lyrical material backed by slim chords and blurting, story-teller vocals. “Ideal World” opens with comforting repetition and bright vocals, indicative of the album vibe with lyrics “tranquilize me with your ideal world/ I was taught what to believe/ now I’m only certain that no one is free.” The titular track, “Before the World Was Big,” is about how much one’s micro-world changes over the years, the tangible differences that feel just as important as physicality and emotional/mental growth but are often overlooked because of the latter. It feels like early, smarter, stripped-down Modest Mouse, despite its depth growing with every listen. The sun dips behind the clouds on “Cherry Picking,” with thicker music, candid thoughts on fleeting relationships that may have meant more in the aftermath. Unexpectedly personal, it’s like eavesdropping on someone’s private concert and a bestof-2015 contender, no doubt. Joanna Gruesome Peanut Butter Fortuna Pop!/ Slumberland Records The band name alone is a curiosity-grabber, a possibly snarky reference to that one harp-playing folk lady who’s related to Gavin Newsom. The Welsh quintet known as Joanna Gruesome, however, are anything but folk, and not all that gruesome. They are exuberant and undeniably politically unreserved, but not your commonplace “indie noise pop” group. Drop Natalie Imbruglia in the middle of a bunch of punky dudes who are angry at their instruments and see what happens- JG, possibly. Volatile in the sense of melted-sugar pop-harmonized vocals by Alanna McArdle, a crunchy middle, and steel topcoat, the album is both abrasive and cute, like rabid-puppy cute. “Last Year” busts in with brass knuckles, but relaxes into a catchy pop/ rock jam, fuzzy and tight with rambling, relatively indecipherable lyrics, but we’re sure they’re about something ultra deep like lost love or societal disappointment. “Jamie (Luvver)” is a top-down, top-speed roadtrip song, impossibly energetic, and “Crayon” is a love-child of Nirvana and Best Coast, boasting lethargic harmonies between McArdle and songwriter/ guitarist Owen Williams. “I Don’t Wanna Relax” is a noisy confessional, neardeafening at first, admitting “I’m sick/ I’m weird.” There’s an urban legend suggesting the band was formed after meeting at an anger management class. It seems, however, McArdle may have fulfilled her catharsis, vibing a sense of holding back while everyone else is balls to the wall. Either way, solid album and worth the bipolar listen.
cd reviews (cont.) Dr. Dre Compton Aftermath/ Interscope Timed perfectly with the release of N.W.A.’s biopic Straight Outta Compton, Dre’s new album is both a surprise, and not so much. After crying wolf for over 15 years, I guess he hasn’t had enough platinum plaques. The hip-hop king has inarguably been one of the most entrepreneurial and innovative voices in music - that being said... can we ever miss the blatant misogyny? Poetry and prose fall swiftly under the gross sound bites. Anyway. With enough hard-hitters collaborating to fill a tour bus, (Jill Scott, the Game, Ice Cube, Snoop, Kendrick Lamar) however, it’s hard to stay upset. Up-and-coming King Mez and Justus now have golden tickets thanks to Compton. “Beats by Dre” is real thing, authentic and thundering, and I’m not talking about headphones. He’s still sneering imitators in their place with tracks like “Satisfaction” while reclaiming a throne that never really lost its warmth. The West-Coast-nostalgia is heavy, with nods (Ice Cube actually says “yesterday was a good day”) that could almost be served with wine, but the OGs want to remind us how the game got started, in case we’ve forgotten. Again. Structurally, there’s no argument about the work ethic involved, and... it’s Dre. But maybe after this Business-101marketing album, he can go sit down somewhere and be quiet. And for the love of god, take Shady with you. Grace Potter Midnight Hollywood Vermont’s musical chameleon is on her own with this effervescent album of radio-ready singles. Saccharine and semidirectionless yet crisp and danceable, it finds Potter belting vocals that are equally silky and husky. Sans the Nocturnals this time, Midnight still bears the hallmarks of old GP, with plenty of rock riffs and mild aggression, but newish-wave sounds, disco, light electronica, theatre and funk sway around the edges, encircling an infectious pop core. It’s just... fun. With every listen, it’s hard not to groove, with braingrabbing hooks and a rainbow of sounds. “Hot to the Touch” opens with a space-opera moan, a plea for a fiery yet unhealthy infatuation, showcasing Potter’s range and dripping with sex, a little Bonnie Raitt that makes me want to listen to Britney. Aptly named, “Alive Tonight” is a nuvo-disco dancefloor-filler with both riffs and synths a-plenty. Lyrically shallow and heavy on repetition, it’s a perfect club tune. The funky “Your Girl” comes with a sigh of relief- we’re getting somewhere. Potter’s vocals shine and weave, continuing into the hand-clapping “Empty Heart” and Radiohead-fronted-by-Leona-Lewis “The Miner.” Never fear, the heaviness disappears again with “Delirious.” Maybe Grace doesn’t quite know who she is, but she’s having fun on her own crystalline adventure. -Whitney Patterson
