A quick note from the editor I’ve never been a big fan of November. In fact, it sometimes makes me angry. Like my dad, I despise cold weather, and I always associate this month with the beginning of the seemingly endless winter slog. So much so that I’m still bitter about last November when the tri-state was hit with a premature arctic blast that effectively stole the remaining days of fall right out from under our dripping noses. Well, move to Florida, you say. Fair enough. Trouble is, I don’t know anyone there, and they don’t have the Hadi Shrine Circus, either. The 82nd(!)

edition of this beloved Evansville tradition will entertain the young and old alike at the Ford Center in late November. For those about to rock, you can catch Cinderella’s Tom Keifer at Boogie Nights or country music outlaw Randy Houser at the Old National Events Plaza. And it goes without saying that there’s always something happening in western Kentucky. I know I’ll be headed to Henderson to see The Second City Fully Loaded – the touring company of Chicago’s longrunning improv comedy troupe. So, I guess November isn’t so bad after all. Happy Thanksgiving! – TE

One of the last remaining three ring circuses is back to thrill us all again lions, even the rescue dogs that are speciallytrained for the circus. The organizers take the job of keeping them in good health very, very seriously and aim to set an example for the community.

ncredibly, 2015 marks the 82nd edition of the Hadi Shrine Circus. It’s a remarkable run that has eclipsed virtually every other production in North America. Since it first debuted all those years ago, more than three million people have attended the circus – young and old alike. This wonderful tradition has become an integral part of the holidays, an event that everyone looks forward to, because the whole family can share in the fun. Simply put, it just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the circus.

He’s always had a knack for getting into trouble and chances are he’ll be up to his usual mischief when the Big Top is raised. Don’t miss this opportunity to say hi to a cartoon TV legend! But as always, the animals are the true stars of the show – from the elephants to the

Along with all the non-stop entertainment and heart-stopping action that audiences have become accustomed to, this year’s edition of the Hadi Shrine Circus will also – for the first time ever – receive a visit from none other than Santa Claus! He’s busy prepping for Christmas, of course, but will kindly take time to make an appearance and see all the good little boys and girls of the tri-state. So get your wish lists ready and be sure to be on your best behavior! But that’s not the only surprise for all the kids out there. Everyone’s favorite animated

Amazingly, the Hadi Shrine Circus keeps the show moving and the action non-stop for three solid hours. Over the last several years, the production has really stepped up its game, changing with the times to incorporate more special effects, contemporary music and dramatic, dazzling lights, bringing a lot more pop to traditional acts such as jugglers, acrobats and lion tamers. And it’s still the only remaining circus with a live orchestra. No matter your age, you’re going to have a blast at the 2015 Hadi Shrine Circus. Get your tickets starting November 5! Show times: 11/26 (3pm); 11/27 (9:30am, 2pm, 7pm); 11/28 (9:30am, 2pm, 7pm); 11/29 (3pm). upcoming events Boogie Nights Rocks presents:

Cinderella’s Tom Keifer

C

inderella frontman and hair metal icon Tom Keifer was in no hurry to finish his first solo album. Known around the world for penning such monster hits in the ‘80s as “Don’t Know What You Got,” “Nobody’s Fool” and “Gypsy Road,” he took his time, eventually decamping to Nashville to both live and soak in the Music City’s songwriting vibe. There, he enlisted the help of his talented wife and other locals to complete the decade-in-the-making The Way Life Goes. The 2013 release has all the Cinderella hallmarks that initially put Keifer in the spotlight. Yet, it’s even heavier on the blues and grittier, with touches of country – much more Rolling Stones than hair metal. Keifer and his band have been out on the road for over two years, and they’re on track to rock Boogie Nights in downtown Evansville on November 14. After souncheck at Bogart’s in Cincinnati, he kindly spoke with News4U. The album has gotten great reviews, but was it strange to release it during a time when music is rarely purchased as opposed to the early days of Cinderella when you were able to sell millions? As a result of my solo record, there’s just been

8|

some really amazing things have come along for the ride. We’ve gotten a fair amount of airplay which is really cool and amazing reviews for the record. We’ve sold a fair amount of albums – there are still people who buy records, but as you said, not nearly as many. The other really cool thing that’s kind of like a parallel to this is the live band that has formed now and that has become a family out here on the road. The shows and the energy surrounding the live band just keeps growing and growing. We’ve been out on the road two and half years and we’re planning on going through the end of next summer, because the energy of that has just taken off. The only negative or downer of it is that it’s a very different world in terms of trying to make money off the sale of music itself. And that greatly affects the return of marketing from your record company, because it’s just a different business. But everything else has just been like a magic show with this thing. I didn’t know what to expect when I released the album, but it’s just been a blast – so much so that we just don’t want to go home. Were you at all concerned about going it alone without the Cinderella name to fall back on? No, not really. I didn’t do a solo record because I was feeling like my wings were clipped in Cinderella. I wrote all the songs; I was the lead singer; I did the majority of the guitar work, particularly the really signature stuff was already written into the song when I brought it to the band. That sound is not something that I can run from nor do I want to run from. All the flavors that are on my solo album – the blues, country, etc. – are all things that we touched

November 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

on in Cinderella. The first record was just really straight up blues melodies and blues style lyrics. I learned those kinds of lyrics from people like Jagger who were inspired directly by the blues. I eventually went back and dug into those roots myself. So, all those Cinderella elements are there – I just kind of took it all to another place on this record, because I was working with different musicians. But it’s still my style – like it or not, there it is (laughs). Has it been difficult to integrate the two phases of your career together in a live setting? Well, the band plays the Cinderella stuff very convincingly. From the time that we started touring, we’ve played the Cinderella stuff as well as the new stuff. The two really intertwine in the set seamlessly. The new stuff gets as big a reaction as the old stuff, and the old stuff gets as big a reaction as it ever did even when I was touring with Cinderella. With me, the fans have the guy who wrote the songs they want to hear and the voice that sang them, and I’ve got just an insanely talented band. It’s been very well received. Going into the tour, playing the Cinderella songs was something I was concerned about, because I want to play those songs as they’re part of my history – but I didn’t want to do it if we couldn’t do it convincingly or the fans didn’t want to accept it; but they have. And I think part of the reason they have is that I’m mixing in new stuff. It’s not like I just left Cinderella to go play Cinderella songs [on my own].

Judging by the hair metal videos that ran on MTV back in the day, it appeared that it was one non-stop party on the road. Had grunge not come along and effectively wiped out entire genres of music, could you have even kept up that lifestyle for much longer? Well, not to burst any bubbles, but I was always pretty responsible about the music. First and foremost, I’m a musician and that’s been my first love since I was a kid. To me, the biggest kick of it all is walking on that stage and performing at my best level and returning the gratitude to the fans that put me there; I want to give them 130% every night. For me, the party thing wasn’t even a question. If we had a couple of nights off we’d go and have some fun, but I never drank or was high on stage – not even the night before a show, because I always wanted give my best for the fans. So, in answer to your question, I would have rolled right through the ‘90s (laughs).

Cinderella has toured periodically through the years. Has the response to these reunion tours been steady or have there been peaks and valleys? It’s been steady. When we first got back together in the late 90s we went and did our own thing on the 98 tour and then from there on out, we started doing sheds and arenas on those package tours – we did a couple with Poison and we headlined one in 2005. We did a bunch of those tours from pretty much 2000 forward and for us as quickly as things melted down and went away in the 90s, the second we set foot back on those big stages with those package deals it was like nothing had ever changed. The fans came out – it was a sea of people singing the songs. We haven’t released any new music, and it doesn’t seem to matter. I wish I could put in a bottle what that is; I think Poison is another one. The combination of them and Cinderella – those tours were always gangbusters. It’s hard to put your finger on what makes that happen for one band and not another. And I got to tell you, it’s been a pretty good ride even with the solo stuff – and it just keeps growing. Doors open at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit tomkeifer.com or boogienightsusa.com/Evansville.

Wynonna & The Big Noise Christmas Country music legend to fill the Ford Center with the sounds of the season on December 3

W

ith a voice as big as a mountain, there’s no need for a last name. First making her mark as one half of country music’s phenomenally successful mother and daughter duo, The Judds, Wynonna struck out on her own in the 90s, embarking on a solo career filled with professional highs and emotional lows. Along the way, she’s picked up an armful of GRAMMYS and become a New York Times best-selling author as well as publicly battled body issues and dealt with family in-fighting. Now, after a particularly difficult period during which her husband and bandmate, Cactus Moser, suffered a devastating motorcycle accident, Wynonna is on track to release her first album of all new material in seven years this February. She’s also back out on the road. In October, The Judds reunited for a string of shows dubbed the “Girls Night Out Tour” to be followed by Wynonna’s annual run of Christmas performances. Backed by The Big Noise (with Moser back in the fold), she’ll fill the Ford Center with her powerhouse vocals on December 3, giving fans an early present. Expect a rawer, more personal Wynonna with a stripped-down sound

highlighting her incredible voice as she belts out holiday favorites. Wynonna has truly had a remarkable career, both with The Judds in the ‘80s and as a solo artist, connecting with audiences through her “anthems for working people.” Her self-titled 1992 debut sold millions on the back of three number one singles, “She is His Only Need,” “I Saw the Light” and “No One Else on Earth.” The follow-up, 1993’s Tell Me Why, was equally well-received, producing no less than five top ten hits. Wynonna continued her incredible run with Revelations in 1996 and the chart-topping “To Be Loved By You.” Few entertainers have experienced such a sustained period of success or even come close to achieving such accolades over an entire career. Indeed, Wynonna is in a class by herself. With her new, less polished sound and undiminished talent, she’s prepped for an exciting new phase that should cement her status as a legend in the music industry. The show starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com or wynonna.com.

2015 Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour New age giants returning to serve up another helping of holiday melodies Taking a lot of credit for the New Age genre, Mannheim Steamroller got its start in 1975 in Omaha, Nebraska, with just one man: Chip Davis. Since then, the group has sold more than 40 million albums—more than many of the biggest names in the music industry, including Bruce Springsteen. The band is back on tour for the holidays and will make a stop at the Old National Events Plaza on November 18. The Evansville tour date is just one of many on Mannheim’s 2015 Christmas Tour. To meet demand, the group will employ two troupes to cover the U.S. throughout November and December. Mannheim has sold 27 million Christmas albums and counting, making them the top band for Christmas music, right above Elvis Presley. But Davis had to start his own record label, American Gramaphone, to get Mannheim Steamroller to the public when the music industry rejected him. It’s now among the most successful independent record labels in history and Davis’ music is sold in stores all over the U.S. and Europe. But it took writing music for commercials and then selling songs from his first album, Fresh Aire I, to stereo system showrooms to get there. Come out and enjoy the sounds of the season with the masters of Christmas music on November 18! – Chelsea Modglin The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com or mannheimsteamroller.com. Randy Houser “We Went Tour”

Billboard-charting singer-songwriter ready to let Evansville know “how country feels” The last seven years have been pretty all right for country music outlaw Randy Houser. In addition to topping the charts with solo singles like “How Country Feels” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” he’s also co-written huge hits with such stars as Trace Adkins (“Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”) and Justin Moore (“Back That Thing Up”) among others. The 39-year-old Mississippi native is peaking at a relatively late age in terms of industry standards, but the life experiences he brings to the songwriting table are more than paying off. And it all carries over to the stage in a big way. Houser’s live shows are always unpredictable with an anything goes vibe. On November 28, he’ll make a stop at the Old National Events Plaza on the “We Went Tour” in support of his latest single and upcoming new album. Houser’s career really caught fire with the release of his third album, 2013’s How Country Feels. It spawned no less than four top ten singles, including the wildly popular title track, and made him a household name. As a result, Houser has been out on the road for long stretches in support of the record but did find time to record “We Went” along the way, the lead single for his imminent fourth album. It was released to country radio back in April, receiving critical praise and paving the way for Houser’s current tour. The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com or randyhouser.com. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville. Cleanse and Exfoliate by Dakyissa Hall

C

an you believe it’s been exactly one year since our first Beauty Date together?! Kind of hard to believe, but I guess time flies when you’re having fun! With that being said, Happy Anniversary, Beauties! I have enjoyed sharing this journey in beauty with you. I truly appreciate all of you that have taken time out to send in emails and/or tell me in person how much you like the articles. It makes my heart smile to hear how God is using this platform to bless so many of us! Of course, I can’t let our anniversary go by without giving you a gift. So, be sure to read this entire article as I have some great treats (Beauty Date freebies) for you! Now, let’s jump into our topic. This year, the focus at Beauty Date will be on becoming A Beautiful You. On our very first date, we learned that true beauty is who you are on the inside. Since then, I have been working with many of you while also examining my own life. What I have noticed is that the majority of us subconsciously still allow appearance to define our beauty. We see people like Halle Berry or Eva Mendez and immediately say, “She’s so beautiful!” Before we know it, we compare our beauty to theirs. As a result, we develop unhealthy mental habits. Suddenly, we have a constant need to ‘look’ good. Eventually, our inner beauty gets neglected. We must make sure we remember that one day, we will no longer have our bodies. So, we must work harder on what will live on (our soul) rather than our appearance. To become A Beautiful You requires that you cleanse and exfoliate. One of the freebies this month is a free one hour coaching session that will walk you through cleansing and exfoliating your life. What does that mean Kyissa? I’m so glad you asked! When you think about

Be sure to mention “News 4U Anniversary” when claiming your prizes! DIY Fall Skin Favorite Honey Face Mask. Manuka and Raw Honey work best, but any kind of honey will do. a proper skin care regimen, cleansing should be done both day and night. Lots of dirt is getting on our skin throughout the day. We are also told that exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells. When we think about our lives, we need to have a process of cleansing and exfoliating too. Throughout the day, we can allow our minds, heart, body, and soul to get dirty. We must learn to properly clean up all areas of our lives. The mind needs to be cleansed from negative thinking, the heart from ungodly desires, our body from bad habits, and our soul needs to be

Advertising & Public Relations Mgr. Tropicana Evansville 1. Amount of time I’ll spend watching football this season... Two things turn 50 in 2016: the Super Bowl and me. So, I’ll be watching the Colts and the Seahawks with hopes that one of them makes it to February 7. I just have to make it to January 9.

2. The moon landing: real or hoax? The lunar video from July 1969 is so grainy and erratic that it’s easily suspect by today’s standards. And, the movie Capricorn One (1978) about a “staged” landing on Mars leads one to believe that anything is possible. Still, we had to start somewhere. I vote “real”.

3. Favorite holiday movie...

Home For The Holidays (1995). I watch it at least once every year around Thanksgiving time. Favorite line: “When you go home, do you look around and wonder ‘who are these people? ’” But it’s a good story of finding personal happiness in a mixed up world.

4. T or F: I would consider plastic surgery at some point... Never say never.

5. The title of my memoir would be... Just Visiting. I can explain over a few drinks.

6. Last time I used a spatula... Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 7:15PM. It was magical.

7. A little known fact about me... I’ve worked for Tropicana Evansville (formerly Casino Aztar) for 17 years.

8. A word or phrase that I overuse... “Today I’m going to get outside and go running.” If only I meant it.

9. My Thanksgiving tradition... My tradition is technically not on Thanksgiving Day. It’s on the morning after. Black Friday. This is the one day of the year I get to spend with my only sister, Eileen. We greet the day before dawn armed with only our hot coffee and cold credit cards and the shopping doesn’t end until late afternoon. I’m thankful to have that time with her.

10. 2015:The good, the bad and the ugly... This year, my father left us on June 10 to begin his journey in the afterlife. He went in the middle of the night so we didn’t get a chance to say a final goodbye. He’d been suffering from dementia for the past few years and his memory was not good. So, at the time, he was living in the memory unit of a nursing home among strangers. It wasn’t really living. I think he knew of a better place and he went there. I like to think of him somewhere enjoying a round of golf, the game he loved so much. That would be good.

Dear Evansville, I’ve called you home now for a little more than a decade, and my perspective of you has seen many shades. Because music was already such a part of my life, that’s what I gravitated to. I was initially surprised to find that original music wasn’t quite as embraced in this area as it had been in Indianapolis, or some of the other cities I’d played. But the bands were electric! And the talent, wow! The musicianship was noticeable from the start, and it still wows me to this day. But what wows me more about this sweet area is the growth transformation! Where I have seen people embrace and support each other, I have seen an explosion of growth. Our community leaders are waving their flag with passion for unity, and it has ignited a fire! Many things make a community unique, but a community is only the reflection of those who live in it. I had to open my own shades to get a good view for myself, and I see gifted people everywhere that not only embrace their gifts, but share them. I feel very blessed to live here during this time– it’s exciting, and it provides countless opportunities for allowing our ideas and thoughts to ignite and create. I found my place along the beautiful Ohio River and am surrounded by so many people that work hard for community growth. The visual arts, the tastes of Evansville, the sounds, the vibe - I love this southern Indiana area and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now! Special thanks to you for allowing me to spread my wings and try new things!

Andrea Wirth Local Musician

Revisiting Nepal N4U Staff Photographer Rajiv “Raj” KC recently returned to his home country of Nepal after 10 years away - and just months after a series of devastating earthquakes destroyed much of the region. Thankfully, his family survived, their home untouched by the disaster. He sent this report before heading back to his life here in southern Indiana. Kathmandu valley, the capital of Nepal was once a huge lake. A Tibetan saint named Manjushree drained down the water to allow civilization in the fertile sacred valley. October 2015 was my first visit home after a decade, and I was surprised to see numerous changes in Kathmandu. Random buildings have popped up everywhere like grown mushrooms in the wild forest, air pollution has gotten worse, and the cost of living has risen a great deal. I spent most of my time visiting friends, relatives, and old temples for photographs; I wanted to see how things looked after a huge earthquake hit in April and May. It was very heart-warming. Outside the valley it is still environmentally and culturally beautiful in places like Bhaktapur, and Nagarkot. All these years I had really missed crowds of people around me, street foods and different vendors selling fruits, vegetables and toys. And above all, I missed the friendly Nepalese. No matter how much things like technology and the cost of living have changed, I found the same lifestyle among people - whereas in the States, technology is one of the key things that affects general lifestyle. Everyone is on the phone communicating, doing business transactions, and entertaining. Overall, I’m glad that I got the opportunity to learn something new every day, assimilate in new culture, exchange different ideas, look at the world with a different perspective and enjoy this life. - Rajiv KC

Vanderburgh Humane Society Local nonprofit on the cusp of major spay/ neuter milestone, continuing fight against overpopulation In case you missed it, October 16 was National Feral Cat Day. And while the number of wild animals roaming and multiplying throughout the city is still a major issue, the VHS is working hard to combat the problem. Currently, the organization is partnering with Another Chance for Animals to trap, fix and release feral cats in overrun areas. In fact, the VHS is set to reach a huge milestone in November: 50,000 spay/neuter surgeries! This incredible achievement is due in no small part to the Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic that opened in July of 2007. The impact of the clinic on the local overpopulation problem cannot be overstated. Simply put, the organization’s ability to offer affordable surgeries has ultimately prevented millions of unwanted puppies and kittens from entering area shelters. Just think about that. The VHS also offers a low-cost TNR (trap-neuter-release) program through the clinic that gives local residents the opportunity to rent a trap and get a community cat fixed at a low rate. The driving force behind National Feral Cat Day is Alley Cat Allies, an agency that promotes the care and spay/neuter of community cats. Visit nationalferalcatday.org for more info. Every time you donate to the VHS, you are doing a great service to the community while also helping a loving animal find a forever home. The VHS receives no funding from the city or Vanderburgh County, so please consider helping any way you can. For more info or to donate, visit vhslifesaver.org. The VHS is located at 400 Millner Industrial Dr. / 812-426-2563.

Vanderburgh Humane Society

Pet Pictures with Santa Impossibly cute annual photo session benefits the VHS, melts hearts

30 years and counting – that’s how long the Vanderburgh Humane Society has been hosting the much-loved Pet Pictures with Santa event. Animal owners from all over the tri-state bring their furry friends to the annual photo session at the VHS to create a lasting memory of the holiday season. Best of all, Pet Pictures with Santa typically nets $7000 for the nonprofit organization. The funds raised during the event help the VHS in so many ways – from upkeep to adoption. But judging from the smiles on the faces of pet owners each year, it’s hard to say who benefits the most – clearly, it’s a win-win for all involved. The 2015 Pet Pictures with Santa event will take place at the VHS November 6-8 (see times below). It is requested that all pets be kept on a leash or in a carrier and be current on their rabies vaccinations. For $25, you will receive four 4X6 color prints (two prints of two poses) and the digital images. Each sitting may include more than one animal, and kids and adults are also welcome to be in the photos! This is an excellent opportunity for a family Christmas card. Costumes are welcome! Photographer Doug Fox is kindly donating his time, so the entire $25 fee will go to the animals at the VHS. Be sure to thank him for his support! Times: 11/6 (noon-7pm); 11/7 (10am-5pm); 11/8 (noon-4pm). For more info on this event and for photo opportunities, please contact Kendall Paul or Amanda Coburn at the VHS: 400 Millner Industrial Dr. / 812-426-2563.

What’s Cookin’

Toast

F

or Chef Ryne Kempin, building things has always been a passion, but when he decided that architecture wasn’t for him, he left and took his first kitchen job as a line cook. Quickly climbing the ranks, he now builds mouthwatering, beautifully presented dishes at Toast, one of Evansville’s newest culinary hotspots. Of course, entrepreneurs and owners Kassy and Marcin Lauer have a little something to do with it. Their restaurant has quickly become a sophisticated destination, situated on Helfrich Hills with a stunning view of the course and a sassy new menu. The first item served was the Day After Disco Fries. As the title implies, this bowl of goodness would make the perfect hangover cure, with crispy hand-cut fries (cooked in vegan/glutenfree oil), smothered with homemade sausage gravy, charred chilies, gooey cheddar cheese, and last but not least, a sunny-side up local egg. Add a Bloody Hell, Mary!, a house specialty with as much kick as you can take, and you have an

“appeTOASTer”, lunch, and a snack. As a picky Bloody Mary drinker, I was more than pleased; theirs is not for the faint of heart. The Party On! Pierogi Plate, a multi-generational family recipe from the Polish Specialities section was the next item, and the authenticity proved itself with the first bite. The grilled Polish sausage snapped into a multitude of flavors, accompanied well by hand-made Pierogis and a Polish salad (or try the Hunter Stew), a colorful mixture of radish, tomato, red and green peppers, onions, and scallions tossed in dressing. Now, for the fire - the Super Sriracha Burger. At a hefty 1/3 lb of local grass-fed beef, it’s the real deal, layered with spicy goat cheese spread, caramelized onion, salted cucumber for crunch, fresh guacamole, and Sriracha mayo on a soft bun. Spring mix is topped with crispy local (no added nitrates/nitrites) bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, grape tomatoes, and house-made croutons and specialty Chef-inspired Bleu Cheese dressing. For more protein, add grilled chicken or rubbed, shaved rib eye. And don’t feel left out if you don’t eat meat - Toast offers a variety of vegan/ vegetarian options including but not limited to the Black Bean (Almost) Burger, the Portland Portobello, Pardon My French Toast, and the Garden Party Omelette. Toast prides themselves on offering an innovative menu fused with tradition that caters to many tastes, and tries to keep things local and fresh, a growing trend that keeps folks coming in. Besides the food and scenery, Toast also hosts fun events and live music. The Dapper Pig

1112 Parrett St., Evansville • 812-401-3333

H

aynie’s Corner’s newest culinary adventure was born of a friendship, a meeting of the minds and business chemistry between Amy Rivers-Word Smith and Sarah Wolfe. The Dapper Pig was merely a pipe dream when the two powerhouses were both selected for News4U’s 20 Under 40, and now the rest is history. Situated inside historic Bromm Manor, the Pig is not your typical restaurant setup. The original bones still stand and provide a canvas for the eclectic decor and a colorful patio that overlooks the Arts District, just a stone’s throw from the Alhambra Theatre, and the park surrounding the fountain winds directly into the entrance. Besides occasional jazz music, an in-house accordion player, and a piano open to willing patrons, the walls are covered in rotational local art that coincides with First Fridays.

to Wolfe, using locally-sourced ingredients is always a priority. The farm-to-table mentality is a rarity in our area, and demands a fluid menu, but the Pig does it well. There’s definitely a comfort in knowing where your food comes from. “Amy and I both share a vision of a restaurant that’s committed to using local growers and producers,” Wolfe says, even using sweet potatoes from her mother’s garden, to which Word replies with a beaming smile and hearty laughter, “It’s so good we feed it to our own babies!” Porkinspired (parts of the menu are even in pig Latin) dishes such as the Dapper Benedict, Pork Banh Mi, and their own twist on Pork and Beans are favorites on the menu. They also offer steaks and sandwiches, along with vegetarian items such as colorful salads, pancakes, cheese and fruit plates, and a White Bean Hummus Sandwich.

And of course, there’s the food. According

themed and innovative cocktail menu. All three of Word’s children have cocktails named after them - The Cecelia, The Dandy Andy, and the Dizzy Fizzy Izzy. Other quirky drinks include the Crouching Hipster, Hidden Vegan, a concoction of Old Tom gin, St. Germain, fresh lemon juice, lemongrass syrup, fresh muddled red grapefruit, grapefruit bitters, orange flower water, and Miller High Life. Of course, front-of-house manager and head mixologist Chris Hedges can probably whip up something for any taste. The Dapper Pig is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. - Whitney Patterson For hours, daily specials and events, find them on Facebook. Sandy’s Pizza Fort Branch favorite celebrating 40 years, staking claim as area’s best pizza

Way back in 1975, Sandy’s started quite humbly in an old building with little more than a rolling pin and a washtub. 40 years later, the business is going very strong thanks to the popularity of their handmade pizzas and commitment to the community. The old building was replaced – twice, actually (128 volunteers came to the rescue when the first new building was destroyed) – with a modern facility that seats up to 170 and features a large arrangement of advertising signage primarily from the local area. Sandy’s also offers a separate “Coke” room that can accommodate up to 80 people. In addition to making incredibly delicious handmade pizzas, Sandy’s makes time to give back to the community. The restaurant is known for its support of schools, churches and nonprofit organizations. In fact, with their Sandy’s Pizza fundraising program, charities have the opportunity to sell handmade frozen pizzas to friends and family and receive 50% of the sales in return.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the high quality food that Sandy’s has produced for the last four decades. With its original location in Fort Branch and a second store in Princeton, their amazing pizzas, Stroms, homemade spaghetti, fresh salads and more are just a short drive from Evansville. Currently, Sandy’s has two new items on the menu: Hawaiian Pizza (cheese, ham, pineapple and sweet red peppers) and Christmas Tree Pizza (cheese, Stromboli sausage, green peppers, onion, sweet red peppers and pepper rings). There’s never been a better time to check out Sandy’s Pizza and support a great business that supports the community in so many ways.

Owner of Beef 'O' Brady's

Happy Thanksgiving to all our loyal craft beer drinkers throughout the tri-state area. We hope this monthly article has helped you make some different choices in how you select your beer each month. This past month I was lucky enough to go to the “America on Tap” festival and tasted some really great beers. Three beers stood out enough that I brought them in for our customers to try. New to the Evansville market is a brewery out of Akron, OH called Hoppin’ Frog. Their Gangster Frog IPA was one that stood out as a great choice for IPA drinkers. Its 7.5% ABV and 55 IBUs don’t make this a very sessionable beer. The bright spicy citrus hop character up front and a distinct orange and tropical fruit hop bouquet add a welcome complexity and strike the perfect balance. Triton Sly Boogie is a fresh, crisp, citrusy IPA. This ale will give you everything you love in an IPA and allow you to have more than one with its 5% ABV and 50 IBUs. Southern Tier Live is the third beer we thought would go over really big in this market. If you like Zombie Dust then you’re going to love this beer. Southern Tier has become one of our favorites and this citrusy IPA is smooth and flavorful to drink. 5.5% ABV and 64 IBUs give this a sessionable feel but can catch up to you in a hurry. Of course, when you drink good IPAs you have to have the perfect food to go with it. I think that chicken wings are perfect. Beef’s has 13 different flavors to choose from ranging from mild to our famous nuclear sauce; other flavors include garlic parmesan, honey BBQ, sweet jalapeno, and my favorite, mango habanero. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. We look forward to seeing you at Beef’s to try these amazing beers.

And don’t forget that Casting Crowns, one of the biggest names in Christian music, are coming to the OCC on November 10. Still riding high on the success of 2014’s Thrive, the group is back to continue promoting the album as well as their latest release, Glorious Day – Hymns of Faith. Both showcase band leader/singer Mark Hall’s soulful vocals, spiritual lyrics and message – all elements that have drawn so many people to Casting Crowns and helped to build such a loyal fanbase. Over the years, the band has scored big on the Christian music chart with massive hits like “Voice of Truth,” “East to West” and “Lifesong” as well as collected numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. The tour stop at the OCC comes just a little over a year after performing at the Ford Center in Evansville; anyone who missed that incredible show has another opportunity to catch the Crowns in the tri-state. The show starts at 7 p.m. An Evening with Casting Crowns is sponsored by Christian Family Radio and WEHT/WTVW. Tickets are $20, $35, and $50 and will be available online at owensborotickets.com, the Owensboro Convention Center Box Office or charge-by-phone at 270-687-8800.

Get in the holiday spirit and get a jump on your holiday shopping at the OCC Last year’s inaugural Owensboro Christmas Show presented by Stewart Promotions drew 8,000 tri-state shoppers to the Owensboro Convention Center – all searching for that special gift. Rest assured no one left empty-handed. The OCC was lined with a seemingly endless number of high quality vendors selling thousands of unique Christmas items, including Christmas décor, crafts, handmade items, bath and body, jewelry and much more. Considering what a great success the event was, it’s no surprise that it’s back this year, bigger and better than ever – and poised to become one of the premier Christmas shows in the area. December 4-6, bring your family and friends to the OCC for the Second Annual Owensboro Christmas Show. Organizers promise that the 2015 edition will surpass last year’s event in every way, with more than 200 high quality vendors from all over the region, more booths and an even better selection of Christmas items on display and available to purchase – literally acres of goods. No matter who’s on your holiday gift list, there’s something for everyone at the Owensboro Christmas Show. With the added emphasis on acquiring quality exhibitors this year, it’s expected that the three day event will attract even bigger crowds as holiday shoppers from Owensboro, Evansville and Henderson – and beyond – make the trip to the OCC. Don’t forget to bring the kids for free pictures with Santa and free inflatables all weekend long! Admission is $2; children 12 and under free. or New Jersey native George Skiadas, owning a restaurant isn’t just a job - it’s a passion. “We try to offer a menu that is both nourishing and pleasing to the eye and taste. People come here to replenish their spirit and body with food,” he says. Famous Bistro, a family-owned, Mediterraneaninspired establishment in downtown Owensboro has been doing just that since 1993, offering everything from fine wine to sandwiches. Family photos and eclectic artwork cover the walls, giving it a hospitable feel, yet the linen napkins, presentation, and food quality allow for a cosmopolitan vibe. After coffee and a chat with Skiadas on the patio, Chef Jared Bradley was more than pleased to share Famous Bistro’s creations, including old Skiadas family recipes and off-menu specials as well as the everyday favorites. The first dish presented was the Pan

Seared Sea Scallop, perfectly plated with taste to match. Flown in fresh from Hawaii, the scallop was accompanied by homemade red onion marmalade and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Next was a special - Nairagi Torro, served in season and directly from Japan. Served with spicy rice noodles and hoisin for dipping, it was tender and flavorful, and of course, adorned with a small yellow flower, plated gorgeously. A light, cheesy, flaky creation, their Spanakopita recipe is followed reverently, as it has been in the Skiadas family for over 60 years. Served with tangy Tzatziki and lemon garnish, the layers of greens, scallions, egg, romano and feta deserve 5 stars. With a whetted appetite, the Trattoria was an excellent follow-up selection. A hearty vegetarian dish, the al dente penne pasta is tossed in a creamy vodka sauce with tomato, red peppers, and sauteed fresh garlic. Finally,

completely satisfied and already planning a return trip, I was served dessert upon Bradley’s insistence, and the Ek Mek was not only beautiful, but a recipe that is over 150 years old, originally concocted as a way to use stale bread, an answer to the much lesser bread pudding. Soaked in a simple syrup, the wheat bread is topped with vanilla custard, whipped cream, and roasted almonds - amazing. Besides the quality dishes served with pride and the familial atmosphere, I highly recommend this restaurant for the total experience. On your next riverfront stroll, be sure to stop in and see what makes this bistro famous. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Thurs: 11am-9pm; Fri: 11am10pm; Sat: 10am-10pm; Closed on Sun. Owensboro café transforming its operation, bringing west coast vibe to western Kentucky

The Country Ham 66 years on, Owensboro’s “best kept secret” still serving up great food at great prices

One of western Kentucky’s oldest and most cherished restaurants, The Country Ham is a family tradition dating back to 1949. In fact, the building was originally constructed in the 1920s before being transformed into a local eatery featuring delicious homestyle food. Current owner Janice Kennedy took over in 2009. After years of cooking for her kids, she decided to make a career out of her skills in the kitchen - a “retirement plan” of sorts. And while Kennedy has kept Country Ham’s much beloved menu mostly intact, she has added her own touches here and there, including irresistible fried green tomatoes and lots of fresh garden vegetables. But she would be the first to admit that longtime customers at the restaurant - some of which have been coming in for 50 years(!) would prefer that things stay mostly the same. For instance, the decor inside Country Ham has gone unchanged for decades. And when Kennedy attempted to bring in some new tables, there was nearly an uprising. The original barrel tables were handmade and nostalgia won out - they’re simply not going anywhere. After seven years of running Pangea Café, Chef Justin Crandall, a graduate of the Florida Culinary Institute, is taking his fresh food approach to the streets. This “farm to truck” philosophy is indicative of west coast trends, in particular, as mobile operations continue to expand, offering both variety and convenience. Crandall is looking to bring the same to western Kentucky. ”We hope that starting this truck will allow those that work at factories or large corporations to have an option versus the overpopulation of vending machines that are present,” he says. “We stay on top of culinary trends that appease the always improving palate of our community. We try to always have a specialty burger, fresh fish, vegetarian (options), fresh meats and poultry.” In addition to the above menu highlights, the Pangea food truck also features wine pairings. Plus, it’s available for private parties, full service catering and as a food operation for local bars. As the business grows, Crandall plans to acquire more trucks and make his culinary delights more accessible. It may take a little effort to track Pangea down, but it’s definitely worth it. With the chef’s impressive background as a saucier at the Biltmore Estates and positions at premier country clubs from West Palm Beach to New Hampshire, the food is guaranteed to be top quality. Follow the Pangea food truck on Facebook (pangeacafeky) or email pangeacompany@yahoo.com. You may also call or text: 270-880-8000.

Country Ham is known for its delicious white fish filets specialordered from Alaska. Mon-Sat, you can order “All You Can Eat Fish” and “All You Can Eat Spaghetti (w/ homemade meat sauce).” The restaurant’s best-selling items are homemade beer-battered onion rings, deviled eggs and Kennedy’s famous fried green tomatoes. Dinner favorites include seafood platters, jumbo frog legs, rib eye, St. Louis style ribs, butterfly shrimp, country ham (of course!) and grilled chicken salad. Country Ham also has a great selection of beer as well as two private party rooms for booking. For the full menu and this month’s specials, follow Country Ham on Facebook or come on in: 5421 Hwy. 60 West in Owensboro. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • November 2015

music Eventually, Jean made her way back to western Kentucky (“I live in the middle of nowhere – I do that on purpose,” she says). While out one night some years ago, she happened to catch a set by local country musician Josh Merritt whose band featured a white-hot fiddle player. It was a revelation. “I had it in my mind for a while that I wanted to break out of playing with the orchestra and sight-reading, but I was scared,” Jean says. “Fiddle playing requires a different style – you play by ear, it’s not meant to be smooth.” She and Merritt soon became friends and when he decided to revamp his band, Jean was invited to join and help shape the new, Americana-based sound. She didn’t hesitate. “Josh wasn’t the first one to ask me to come along full-time, but he’s very professional – knows a lot for his age – and I liked the direction he was going,” Jean says. “He’s got really good originals and if you play with Josh, you know you’re going to be busy.”

Lacy Jean “What’s the difference between a violin and a fiddle? I always say about six beers!” – Lacy Jean Only just 40, Owensboro musician Lacy Jean has been playing violin professionally for a staggering 24 years. She scored her first major gig with the Owensboro Symphony while still in high school – before acquiring her driver’s license, in fact. As the youngest member, Jean was rightly proud of her accomplishment but also a bit embarrassed. “I didn’t want anybody knowing my age,” she says. “My grandmother was dropping me off at rehearsals, and I would be like, ‘my car is in the shop.’” Still, Jean couldn’t complain about the money. Her strict practice regimen literally paid off as the checks started rolling in. “As a 16-year-old, you don’t really have any bills, so I was kind of rich for a teenager,” she says. “It was excellent – I blew every penny of it.” Just a year later, Jean was selected to play with folk superstar John Denver when he came through town. It was only the first of many high profile jobs. Her expertise at sight-reading also afforded Jean the opportunity to share the stage with such big names as Dionne Warwick,

The Moody Blues and her grandmother’s sentimental favorite, Anne Murray. The latter experience proved especially rewarding. “It was a big deal because my grandmother, who was very supportive of my music and helped me out a lot, was a big fan, and I was able to get her tickets,” she says. Jean moved around a lot as she got older, primarily to see what was out there musically. Through networking and word-of-mouth, she continued to forge a very successful career, playing with various orchestras as well as headlining weddings and parties. She also continued to back up such legends as Three Dog Night, Glen Campbell and Vince Gill. Despite the enormity of the shows and the stature of the performers, Jean always felt comfortable in the spotlight. “I wasn’t really nervous playing with stars because there are solid, great players around you,” she says. “You can’t mess up, but you’re surrounded by experienced people – the moment’s not overwhelming.”

November 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Talk about busy… in addition to her continuing involvement with Merritt’s band, Jean still finds time to sit in with orchestras as well as perform solo on guitar – often at area wineries. She’s currently working on an album of original songs in the vein of strong females like Gillian Welch but doesn’t plan to put it out until next year. In short, Jean is in a groove. “I’m very happy with the way that everything is going right now – everything fits perfectly into place.”

Live at the International Bluegrass Music Museum The IBMM Fall 2015 Benefit Concert Series continues with some Austin, TX bluegrass on November 20

It’s hard to believe, but here we are already three shows deep into the annual effort to preserve the legacy of bluegrass music. Better known as the Fall Benefit Concert Series, the run of shows from September through December directly impacts the IBMM, allowing the museum to continue offering educational music programs and cover general operating expenses as well as fund the Video Oral History Project and artifact collection efforts. This year’s incredible lineup of regional and national bands offers fans of bluegrass and folk music a unique opportunity to see no less than six amazing performances throughout the fall season. And while three shows are already in the books, there are still three to go, including Wood & Wire on November 20. Hailing from the musical hotbed of Austin, TX, the four-man acoustic band is known for its passionate take on traditional bluegrass with elements of progressive grass such as modern harmony and song forms. The band’s sound is perfectly captured on “Dancin’ on My Grave,” a break-neck speed lament that just keeps barreling forward like a runaway train. It neatly highlights both the emotion and the technical prowess of these Texas musicians – a combination that makes Wood & Wire a live juggernaut on stage. For tickets and more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org or call 270926-7891. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro.

Henderson Area Arts Alliance presents:

The Second City Fully Loaded Famous Chicago comedy troupe will shoot to kill at the Henderson Fine Arts Center Saturday Night Live – and, frankly, TV in general – wouldn’t be the same without The Second City. Chicago’s long-running improvisational comedy troupe has produced a virtual who’s who of comedic actors over the years, including the star of SNL’s first season (and such blockbuster films as Animal House), John Belushi, and new Late Night host Stephen Colbert. Synonymous with talent, The Second City continues to entertain crowds both on stage in Chicago and on the road with its touring company. On November 12, six of the troupe’s most hilarious members will perform at the Henderson Fine Arts Center as part of the Henderson Area Arts Alliance’s After Dark Series. Yes, that means some content may include subject matter and language not appropriate for younger audiences. In other words, be prepared for a wild night of Fully Loaded comedy. Second City shows are always unpredictable – the revue’s combination of improv, sketches and songs is unlike anything else you’ll see all year. Other famous Second City alumni include Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Steve Carell, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and current SNL star, Aidy Bryant. And that’s barely scratching the surface. So don’t miss this rare opportunity to see stars in the making when The Second City Fully Loaded touring company stops in western Kentucky! The show starts at 8 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit haaa.org or call 270-831-9800. The Henderson Fine Arts Center is located at 2660 S. Green St.

knew I wanted to have ‘Vinyl’ in it – so I just came up with The So Long Vinyls. We get sh*t sometimes because the plural of ‘vinyl’ is ‘vinyl’ – but The So Long Vinyl just did not sound good.”

The So Long Vinyls “The melodies of the 60s have always caught our attention – the harmonies, too. We like British rock, that kind of poppy sound.” – Jared Heberer, bassist for The So Long Vinyls

A

s is the case with a lot of bands, Evansville’s The So Long Vinyls were born out of a friendship. Lead singer/ guitarist Matthew Mudd and bassist Jared Heberer spent many of their days at Harrison High School hanging out and listening to all types of music – from rap to doo-wop. It’s safe to assume that as teenagers in southern Indiana, they were alone in their affection for the sounds of Motown and 50s-era vocal groups – especially the latter. But they were particularly drawn to the sugar rush of British rock, tuned into the chiming guitars and swept up by the pop sensibilities. Even before the two friends and “musicians” – Heberer had yet to learn an instrument – decided to form a band, the sound of The So Long Vinyls was formulating in their minds, a strange amalgamation of musical genres and periods. Strange for this neck of the woods, that is. Mudd sums it up nicely: “When we’re on a lineup of bands for a show, the other bands usually sound nothing like us.”

Lamasco Bar open mic night. It did not go well. “We were terrible,” Heberer says with typical amusing self-deprecation. “I got nervous and forgot the parts I had written for bass.” That performance, thankfully, turned out to be an aberration and the Vinyls (more about that name in a moment) quickly progressed as their

Mudd eventually started writing songs and Heberer took a crash course in bass playing. Over time, this first incarnation of the band – minus current lead guitarist Dillion Stocker and drummer Tyler Fuchs – made plans to record and also took to the stage for the first time at a

songs grew more melodically complex. As the band headed into the studio for their inaugural recording session, the pressure was building to christen the project. “I knew we couldn’t release music under a question mark, but I just couldn’t think of a name,” Mudd explains. “I

With a proper, if not grammatically correct, name locked down, the band recruited new lead guitarist and metal fanatic Dillion Stocker. His impact was immediate. “We got tighter as a band for leads when Dillion joined,” Heberer says. “He’s a master at guitar.” Not surprisingly, the Vinyls’ live performances improved dramatically. “The response that we’ve gotten is super gratifying – we’ve heard some really rewarding things about us,” Mudd says. “At [one show] an old guy was freaking out, saying ‘that was like a (bleeping) Beatles experience!’” With a newfound confidence, the guys went back into the studio, working with Thanasphere Productions up in Bloomington. Over the last year, they’ve laid down tracks for a forthcoming album, perfectly balancing their 50s and 60s influences with bright, pop-rock melodies and intricate vocal harmonies. Now it’s just a waiting game as the mixing process continues. In the meantime, Mudd and company have boosted their rhythm section by bringing 18year-old Tyler Fuchs into the fold. Self-taught but dead-on, he’s slotted in seamlessly, despite his initial distaste for the band (a long story). The only downside: Fuchs’ age requires that he stand outside the bars after playing. Regardless, his power and precision have elevated the songs to another level, and the Vinyls have never sounded better. And they still don’t sound like anyone else in town.

books The Creature Behind You By Sam Kuban

Just in time for Halloween, Evansville resident Sam Kuban has released his second book, The Creature Behind You. It represents the author’s first attempt at children’s literature after previously venturing into the horror/comedy genre. Described as a “quirky read that will make you think twice about the noises you hear, the shadows you see, and the feelings you think you understand,” The Creature Behind You is heavily influenced – both in terms of the writing and illustration – by the likes of Edward Gorey, Lemony Snicket, Roald Dahl and Tim Burton. The imprint of these giants of film and literature makes for an effectively creepy atmosphere that should have kids pulling up the covers extra tight at night, wondering, “are those just leaves rustling?”

Thunder/Dreamer

Celebrated local band to hit the road in November, test-drive new material Armed with a slew of songs written over the past year, merchants of atmosphere Thunder/Dreamer are packing up their gear and heading out on a mini-tour that takes in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Arkansas before winding things up back home with a stop at PG Café on November 22. The band – Stephen Hamilton (vocals, guitar), Corey Greenfield (drums), Alex Wallwork (bass) and Zach Zint (keys, organ, piano) – has built a solid following on the strength of 2014’s Lonesome Morning. The 10-song collection brilliantly showcases Thunder/Dreamer’s reverb-heavy, folk-Americana sound while also expanding on the dynamics at work on their self-titled debut EP. Songs such as “My Own Town” and the title track in particular, underscore Hamilton’s laconic vocals, creating a feeling of wooziness that never quite goes away. Backed by the instrumental prowess of Greenfield, Wallwork and Zint, the hazy melodies take flight. When the band returns from the tour, the plan is to enter the studio and record a new album with an eye on a 2016 release date. The songs should be ready to go after being test-driven on the road in front of fans from all over the Midwest. In fact, the set list for the upcoming shows will be comprised of mostly new material. Be sure to catch the band at PG on November 22 to welcome them back home and get a sampling of the next album. Follow Thunder/Dreamer on Facebook and visit thunderdreamer. bandcamp.com to purchase Lonesome Morning or the EP.

In addition to writing, Kuban, who holds a degree in Interactive Media Design from USI, also spends his time composing music. The multi-instrumentalist has released several albums and scored numerous short films and animations as well as co-founded Rotten Plots, an online movie plot generator and board game. Both The Creature Behind You and Kuban’s previous book, Beautiful Things and How to Ignore Them, are available online at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Back to the Lake John Thurgood

The terror of knowing that the lake was haunted scared us, sure, but statistically, we were more likely to get killed by a sea lion on vacation than a murderous banshee, so we thought why not? You only live once. And since we had been studying so hard for finals the past week, we deserved a little R&R. That’s what we told ourselves on the drive up to the cabin that Jimmy’s parents owned. We said it and traded sobering smiles, because we thought, This is how great weekends usually start.

Comic Relief with Brooke Spitler

For me, stand-up comedy came as a surprise. The idea to perform comes to most comedians quite haphazardly and for good reason. On the list of potential careers young children dream of, stand-up is just as likely a choice as exotic dancer. I happened upon comedy while trying to find love or something close enough. I had installed Tinder and happened to swipe, meet, and then date a person all upon the chance he liked my photos and I tolerated his. He turned out to be a local comedian, which led to meeting the comedian community in Evansville and, unfortunately for him, also led to being my ex. The Evansville comedy scene is a small one. We all perform for different reasons and against the Surgeon General’s warning of risk factors that may lead to increased mental instability. On the flipside, comedy can be a balm and for Evansville an opportunity to grow. Without an established comedy club, monthly events such as Bokeh Lounge Comedy Night and Comedy Night Club El Rio bring talent from all over the Midwest and provide stage time for local comedians. I fell in love with comedy and the chance to travel, entertain, and meet new and interesting people. Before I started performing I had 150 Facebook friends and now I’m almost to 400. Jimmy was the first to die. It was an accident, really. We sent him out to the shed down near the water to see if there was any firewood stacked up to season. It was late and we should have known better, but we were also pretty drunk. And Cindy had brought some molly. We didn’t find Jimmy until the next morning. His body was cut open and splayed between two trees with ivy like a bumble bee caught in a web. His chest cavity had been cleaned out, and the organs were missing. We thought about calling Jimmy’s parents or even the police, but we didn’t have permission to use the cabin, so we thought it best to sober up first. Jerome died next, or at least we assume he died. We never found his body. He simply disappeared while a few of us were swimming off the floating dock in the middle of the lake. The sad thing was that there was no way to tell if it was the Banshee that had killed him, or the fact that we had all been tripping for the past two days. When Cindy’s body washed up the next morning we thought for sure it was the Banshee, all except Todd, Cindy’s emotional boyfriend, who on seeing Cindy’s mutilated corpse, suffered a mental break and began accusing all of us as the murderers. He said that we were jealous of the love he and Cindy shared. We tied Todd to a chair and locked him in a closet until we could think of how to better handle the situation. After a few hours of yelling, he finally wore himself out and most likely fell asleep. At least, that’s what we thought until we opened the closet, and he was missing. The chair was empty with the ropes we had used to tie him down draped as if he had dematerialized. The whole thing was so spectacular that we began to think that maybe Todd had been the Banshee killer all along. That is until we found his disemboweled body hanging from two trees down near the water. That was when we decided to leave. Summer classes were starting the following week, and Brad said his professor was being a real asshole for assigning homework due before classes even started. We never did see the Banshee, or find out if the myths were real.

television

HGTV’s John & Whitney Spinks the couple suddenly found themselves going through the unfamiliar process of casting. And while they had no idea just what they were getting themselves into, the lure of a $50,000 prize was enough. The Spinks were LA bound.

Long before Whitney Spinks and her husband John made their way out to Los Angeles in 2014 for a wholly unexpected but entirely successful television debut on HGTV’s Flipping the Block, they were simply two teenagers in love at Reitz High School. In fact, the couple met some time before freshman year but didn’t officially start dating until age 14. Not long after, John began working as a custom home builder in the area, acquiring skills outside of the classroom that would prove very useful later on. Post-Reitz graduation, the couple headed off to USI – John leaving sophomore year to join the Navy while Whitney stayed on to complete her business degree. The separation was difficult, especially since John was traveling all over the place, but eventually he got stationed in Mayport, FL and Whitney soon followed him down. That’s when things got interesting. “Right after I moved, we purchased our first home (in Jacksonville) and John was deployed for almost the entire last two years [of his service],” she says. “I was working on the house all by myself. I didn’t know a lot of people in Jacksonville at the time, so I

was dabbling a lot in DIY projects and interior design projects around the house.” To stay in contact with John and keep him in the home improvement loop, Whitney set up a blog online – drabtofabdesign.com – which quickly

gained a number of followers and ultimately caught the eye of HGTV. Soon, she received an email from the channel that sounded far too good to be true. “[They] asked us if we would like to apply to be on a new show,” she says. After nearly deleting the message, Whitney did a little research and concluded that it was, indeed, legitimate. With John back home,

The “new show” turned out to be Flipping the Block, HGTV’s version of Survivor. Over eight weeks, four teams were tasked with renovating horribly debilitated condos while living in them. “Every episode was a new set of challenges,” John explains. “It definitely was the most intense competition-style show that HGTV has ever done. We were fortunate enough to be guinea pigs for season one.” In reality, the Spinks became the stars of FTB despite coming in second. The couple trended big on social media, helping the show rank as the channel’s hottest during the summer of 2014. Midway through its run, John received a call from the production company. “They said ‘you guys are doing great, the viewers like you, and we want to do a pilot with you for another show,’” he says. “That became Florida Flippers. They followed us around Jacksonville doing what we do – flipping homes for the business.” That business, 27South Design Home Group, is the Spinks’ dream come true. It was established after the success of Flipping the Block and has quickly taken off. “The meat and potatoes of what we do is home design for home owners – decorating and spacing,” John explains. “We took all the exposure and turned it into a moneymaking business. It’s been a really good year and a half.” The Florida Flippers pilot – which got great ratings – aired on June 21, 2015, but so far HGTV has not opted to film more episodes. Still, the Spinks have other potential offers and are grateful for everything that’s happened since Whitney first received that dubious email. “It’s so crazy to think about that because sometimes we’ll sit down and reflect on where we are in our lives, and I don’t think we would have taken nearly as many chances as we have,” she says. Lobeck’s Lowdown Ask the Pastor with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Does the Bible Q: What Say About Abortion? Nowhere in the Bible is there any mention of abortion. In the Roman Empire of Jesus’ day, abortion, abandonment, and infanticide were practiced. Still, Jesus said nothing about this. There is no textual mention of abortion in the Bible. There are those that would argue that the sixth commandment – “you shall not murder” – is all that needs to be in play. However, that would also mean that capital punishment and most forms of war would also need to be eliminated. Consistency is required. While Jesus did not say anything about abortion, he had a lot to say about the poor. Planned Parenthood has become synonymous with safe and legal abortion. But Planned Parenthood is mostly a place where women and men -- and especially the poor – can receive reproductive health care services, especially contraception prescriptions. Those of us with insurance and financial means can consult our physicians. The poor need Planned Parenthood. If people of faith want to decrease the number of abortions, we need to provide free contraception to those who are uninsured or who simply cannot afford it. Try as religious communities might, people are not going to be “converted” from their sexual practices. Therefore, we need to work together to be sure that “recreational” sexual practice does not become “pro-creational” sexual practice. Attacking Planned Parenthood gets us nowhere. Eliminating the need for abortion is a noble and worthy goal. The best step we could take in achieving that goal is to provide safe, comprehensive, and free birth control to those who are sexually active.

Monthly musings on music, movies and pop culture

The Wonders of Thanksgiving When I was a child, November was the month that seemed to go on forever. The excitement of Halloween had passed, but the Christmas season was still weeks away. The one reason I looked forward to Thanksgiving was that it marked the setup of our glorious (artificial) Christmas tree. As I have gotten older and established my own little family, I have learned to appreciate Thanksgiving as more than just a lead up to Christmas. Allow me to share with you my glorious Thanksgiving routine. It begins the weekend prior when my wife reminds me that her extended family get-together is coming up, and I begin my desperate search to find a reason why I have to sit this one out. Fast forward to Thanksgiving Day, and I am up at the crack of dawn to immediately start bugging my wife about starting dinner. I am displaying the same behaviors I might have on Christmas morning 20 years prior, only this time I’m begging for turkey, green bean casserole, and pie. My wife must find a way to pacify me for the next few hours. The formula usually involves sitting me in front of the television and allowing me to enjoy cold beer with my breakfast. As the day goes on, the familiar aromas of Thanksgiving begin to fill our home. By the time we sit down to our midafternoon meal, I am truly overwhelmed with appreciation and gratitude for my wife, son, dogs, and even my no good, rotten cat. I dive into our feast, compliment our lovely chef, and eventually announce that I have overdone it and shall retire to the master’s quarters for slumber. When I awake from my food coma, the house is dark and peaceful. I stumble out to the kitchen and immediately fix a plate of leftovers, followed by a piece of pie I eat by hand like it’s pizza. My wife might come in at this point and take a shot off the whip cream bottle. We sit down in our living room and there isn’t much talking at this point. She’s likely on her laptop, and I might be watching American Dad. In my head though, I am thinking of her, and how lucky I am that she’s sitting next to me in that dimly lit room. It’s Thanksgiving after all, and she’s what I’m most thankful for. Love you, babes. J. Robert Lobeck

Love is one of the most complex things in the world. It can be gorgeous and wholly devastating simultaneously. You can’t touch it; rather, it’s something intangible that’s more visceral than anything one can hold onto, and the vibrations that come from it can be more contagious than a disease. Love comes in many forms, and although I don’t really believe that what you can feel for someone ever goes away, it can morph, transform, evolve, and lessen. When this happens, a range of other emotions take hold -fear, rejection, anger, sadness, desperation. “Love makes people do crazy things” is a real statement. That being said, the most difficult love to navigate, in my experience at least, is love for yourself. Often in relationships, romantic or otherwise, we feel so much for another person that we give and give until there’s nothing left. If a relationship is completely and continuously symbiotic, the transfer of energy may hold it together, but if the other person has reached the finish line, then you’re stuck holding a second-place ribbon and all you have left is yourself. Your ride-or-die better be someone you can live with. This has been an intense lesson I’ve been attempting to teach myself this summer. It’s not that I don’t know who I am as a person - I’m overly analytical, kind until someone gives me a reason not to be, then I give people too many chances, always rooting for the underdog, brutally honest, passionate about everything, a sociallyanxious extrovert, genuinely awkward, bossy, too sensitive, outwardly grumpy

(bitchy resting face is my heart armor that comes naturally by way of my hamsterwheel brain), dry and sarcastic... but I love with my entire heart, and the 10% of my brain that I’m aware of is terrified by that fact. Just don’t tell anyone, ha. We’re all teachers and students in this life, however, and although we can’t completely separate our emotions from situations, we can appreciate them for what they were, take the best parts and use them to build a vehicle for the future. It’s a rough ride, though. Grab a helmet.

Where is the best place to put the meat thermometer in a turkey? a. Leg b. Thigh c. Breast d. Neck

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 7 Liquor Locker locations. www.Liquor-Locker.com

Goodwood Brandy Barrel Honey Ale

Dogfish Head Sixty-One

Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA

Daniel Knight • 3.5 This one was intriguing to me. Their description calls it a honey-aged ale in a brandy barrel. It didn’t make any sound when I popped the cap. Hmm… it pours up a dark, cloudy copper color with very little head and short retention. The aroma is first of brandy or bourbon with honey and other unidentifiable sweet notes. More low-key than others I’ve had, but nice. The taste is actually more subtle than the aroma in the bourbon barrel category. Nice, though - a sweet honey influence for sure. I like this one. I didn’t stop drinking until it was gone.

Daniel Knight • 3 Dogfish Head calls this one an American IPA. What it is, is a beer/wine hybrid, basically. It pours up a light purple-ish brown color with a one finger head and fair retention. It smells musty with more yeastiness than hops, some very mild spices come through too. It’s really musty and fruity smelling as well. The flavor follows its aroma with an old-ness in the taste. It’s kind of funky, actually. Not necessarily bad, though. That said, this is probably the least impressed I’ve ever been with an ale brewed by Dogfish Head.

Daniel Knight • 3.25 I’m always happy to see an IPA in the monthly roundup of beer reviews. This one pours up pretty with its cloudy (not because it’s wheat— it’s not, but because it’s unfiltered) golden orange color and lively off white head with good retention and lots of lacing. The aroma speaks quietly of floral hops, pine and bread. The flavor speaks louder mirroring the characteristics of its aroma with an almost sweet maltiness there that’s not so welcome in my IPAs. With that more prominent maltiness this brew would probably be more drinkable for folks that don’t generally prefer IPAs.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick off-white head rests atop this deep amber ale. Malt and honey notes dominate the scent profile. The malt and honey flavors remain while first drinking the beer, along with some fruit flavors, a hint of hops coming through and notes of the brandy barrel used in the aging process in the finish. This beer is definitely worth a try, especially while the weather is still warm. Serve with lighter dishes like salads and desserts. Jabez Martinez • 2 This dark, amber-colored beer just does not have a very good flavor. It does have an 8.7 % ABV but that’s the only thing it has going for it. I could taste the honey, but I don’t really care for the brandy barrel flavor. I think the beer industry is trying to experiment with crazy flavor combinations, and this one’s not very good.

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thin white head that dissipates almost instantly tops this beer. The beer left behind seems to have pink undertones from the grapes used in the brewing process. Fruity notes from the grapes highlight the scent profile, with hop notes also present. The first taste highlights the beer flavors, with some wine flavors from the grapes in the finish. Pair this one with pork or cheeses like gruyere or a young Gouda. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is an India Pale Ale that I think is a little on the lighter side. I like this one because the hops flavors don’t hit you over the head like most IPAs. I could taste the light grape flavor. It does have a 6.5% ABV. This is a very smooth beer with a great flavor.

November 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head crowns this deep golden ale and never completely disappears. Hop scents fill the nose, first with pine, followed by notes of citrus. The hops continue on the tongue while tasting the beer, with the pine notes especially present during the long finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with spicy Mexican dishes to bring out the best in the food and beer. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This one is very similar to the Dogfish, but it’s pretty heavy on the hops. Of course, that’s how an IPA usually is, but the hops usually crush any other flavors that could be present. Follow us on twitter @

Abita Purple Haze

Daniel Knight • 2.75 What a great name. Purple Haze gets its name from the fact that raspberry purée is added after the filtering process. It isn’t purple by the way. It has a cloudy, dark straw color with an airy one finger head that disappears quickly. The nose is weak and mostly of malts with a subtle - since I know it’s there - raspberry too. The flavor

actually brings the raspberry forward a bit and otherwise tastes light, slightly tart and grainy (wheat). The mouthfeel is as though it’s artificially carbonated. It’s probably not, though. Wheat beers have that characteristic some times. I’m not a fan. Paul Bragin • 2.75 A thick white head forms on this golden lager and never totally evaporates when poured into a mug. The scent of raspberries hits the nose while the beer is still in the bottle. It’s even stronger in the glass. The raspberry flavor seems to overpower any other flavor that might be present. The fruit flavor and low alcohol content suggest this might be a good beer for beginners. Serve it with fruit desserts. Jabez Martinez • 3 I just can’t get excited about purple beer. I have a friend that likes Abita because it reminds him of a drink from his youth. It has good carbonation but almost too much. It’s just too sweet, so I am a one-and-done drinker of this beer. It just seems like a 50/50 wine/beer mixture.

Random Beer Facts! 1.) There’s about 2.5 pints of CO2 dissolved in a pint of beer. 2.) Light that’s bouncing inside the head on a pint is what makes it a different colour to the beer. 3.) When someone pulls you a pint, they are actually pushing the beer. 4.) The glass you drink out of affects the taste of your beer. 5.) When you open a bottle of beer, the air in the bottle suddenly depressurises, condensing into a tiny cloud of water vapour. http://www.factslides.com/s-Beer

The Gift (R)

STX Entertainment A picturesque life is what’s on the agenda for Simon (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall, The Awakening) when they move into a new house in Simon’s hometown. After just beginning to nest, the young couple runs into Gordo (Joel Edgerton, Black Mass), a childhood classmate who Simon fails to recognize. Gordo, strange but seemingly harmless, attempts to strike up a friendship with the couple by dropping a housewarming gift at their home. Robyn’s curiosity and loneliness invites him to dinner, much to the reluctance of Simon, and as a series of disturbing encounters and startling revelations start to surface, she begins to question everything. How well does one ever truly know another person, and what is the price of redemption and forgiveness? Edgerton’s performance and direction are eerily plausible, weaving a web of complex obsession, wicked yet sophisticated and sympathy-invoking, and Bateman sheds his normal comedic persona to fulfill a surprising role with more depth. As pawn, referee and a character battling her own demons, Hall has a raw sheen, and the film truly hedges on her perspective. In a similar vein to thrillers such as Cape Fear, The Gift is modern, harrowing, and completely discomfiting.

About Elly (Unrated) Cinema Guild

When a group of college friends decide to reconnect for a relaxing seaside weekend, Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) insists on bringing her daughter’s teacher, Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti) in hopes of matchmaking with her single friend Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini) who is recently divorced and briefly visiting from Germany. Elly agrees to stay for one night only, in order to get back to Tehran with her ill mother, and the two seem to reluctantly hit it off, even fibbing to the caretaker of the villa that they are newlyweds in order to nix suspicion (Iran is restrictive with unmarried couples traveling together). The day Elly decides to return to Tehran, however, tragedy strikes, and the group is left with unanswered questions and a less-thanforthcoming Sepideh. Tension runs high as everyone scrambles for the truth, but the answers are not what they were hoping for, conflicted by the polarity of honesty versus lies in order to preserve dignity and spare grief. Directed by Asghar Farhadi (Academy Award winner for A Separation), the film is a subtle and realistic psychological thriller, and won the award for the Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. With a scenic filming location on the Caspian Sea and heavyhitting performances from the entire cast, About Elly is one of the most powerful films I’ve seen in years. - Whitney Patterson

cd sidebar Deerhunter Fading Frontier 4AD

Fading Frontier is the seventh album by Atlanta-based indie rock gods Deerhunter. They’re one of the few bands to change up their sound drastically from album to album (if you’re unfamiliar, listen to the huge difference between 2010’s Halcyon Digest and the 2013 follow-up, Monomania) and still retain an inherent sound that is all their own. Fading Frontier finds the band trying new things with songs like “Snakeskin,” a completely out-of-character funk rock groove, while throwing around older sounds into the mix (“All The Same” and “Take Care” could easily be from their Microcastle era). You’ll find no powerful rock songs on this album like fan favorites “Nothing Ever Happened” or “Desire Lines,” but that’s okay—this is Deerhunter’s pop album. And it’s a great pop album. If you’re still not sold, listen to the album’s single “Breaker”—one of the most beautiful songs the group has ever recorded. Fading Frontier is a great addition to Deerhunter’s nearly perfect catalog and should be a great addition to your record collection or iTunes library.

Deafheaven New Bermuda ANTI-

Disclaimer: I’m not the biggest metal fan; I like only a dozen or so heavy bands. That being said, Deafheaven is at the top of that short list. Their previous album, 2013’s Sunbather, was absolutely stunning in its combination of post-rock, shoegaze, and black metal. New Bermuda finds Deafheaven using the same formula in the best way possible. Though the album contains only five songs, each song finds the band switching seamlessly from aggressive vocals and drumming to the most beautiful guitar ballads you’ve ever heard. It’s honestly astounding. Give New Bermuda a listen whether you’re a metal head or not—it’s a great album. - Russell Finn

cd reviews Kid Kollision Foreign ATM Self-Released

Being a true DJ is about more than just pressing play. Local artist Kody Barrett, a.k.a. Kid Kollision, knows what’s up. Always grinning and bouncing around, KK is the epitome of true artistry, exchanging massive energy with his genuinely excited live audiences. With over 250 songs sampled and layered on the 10-track Foreign ATM, there’s no room to NOT be surprised. Cut from one lengthy mash-up, it’s genre-schizophrenic, gung-ho, innovative, and there’s not a damn thing that’s boring or regular about it. KK takes what should be oil and water and turns it into pop/nostalgia/electronic gold. “Fast B*tch” gets things started, a track that builds steadily, bringing in unexpected bits of chillwave elements topped with Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, and 80’s flavor with Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” switching it up immediately with a heavier beat on “Heartbreaker.” Enter Enimem, but before things can get too serious, the vibe takes a swift turn with the Scissor Sisters’ “Take Your Momma Out,” and flows into “Say It Ain’t So” and UGK. Just a taste of Kid’s original style, listen for Soft Cell, Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Disturbed, MIMS, Robyn, Keith Sweat, George Michael, Mariah Carey... The elements are endless. Foreign ATM is available for free streaming on SoundCloud. Catch a show at PG and look for Man Night in early 2016. Angel Haze Back to the Woods Self-Released

After the successful artist-leaked Dirty Gold, Angel Haze (born Raae’n Wilson) has released a note-worthy follow-up in Back to the Woods. The 23-year old Detroit native and military kid initially gained attention with the video for “Battlecry” and the appropriately-titled “Cleanin Out My Closet.” The rabble-rousing survivor trap-hop performer has an arsenal that makes many popular artists feel fake, including multi-range vocals that swing from crisp, forceful rhymes to smooth velvet, and there’s an undeniable self-awareness that’s genuine and brave. Lyrically- sound, genre/gender fluid yet cohesive, it feels almost effortless. “D-Day” is a light-industrial autobiographical disclaimer, short and anything but sweet, with the androgynous “Impossible” thundering behind. Haze’s silky diva stylings and ability to transition are displayed in “On Fire,” leaving Niki Minaj looking like an even bigger plastic joke. Haze nods to director Wes Anderson in “Moonlight Kingdom,” a jazzy/ house song about impossible young love, with lyrics like “But you row the boat that I’m in/ You know we both sink or swim/ Baby, we’re drowning.. wilting like flowers/ Chasing the sun for the love that forgot us.” “Detox” is a slick, bass-layered track about addictive love - “You all dipped in gold/ Higher than the tree tops/ I’m addicted, got me worshiping my knees off.” Confessional without a care to give, Woods is more than impressive from every rap to the last note.

cd reviews (cont.) City and Colour If I should Go Before You Dine Alone Records

Dallas Green is back again and the vulnerability in his vocals are a force to be reckoned with. That’s something that hasn’t changed since day one, nor has his uncanny ability to make mortality feel romantic and slightly sexy. However, If I Should Go Before You is a slight departure from previous releases - the folk element is waning and that’s totally okay because when it surfaces it feels... awkward. The gauzy “Woman” opens with pounding percussion and an electricity that is strangely Jim James. Lyrically it’s equally gossamer - “when the world has emptied/ and the planet is covered in dust/ I will stand beneath the silver moon rising/ waiting to resurrect our love.” “Northern Blues” is a groovy tune masked by lyrics that mirror thoughts that keep folks awake at night and “Mizzy C” is misleading, with sunny jams and lyrics about perpetuating mistakes. The title track is disgustingly gorgeous, tight and fuzzy like a sweater, but the lyrics have been overdone - cue Death Cab’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” The fog lifts on “Runaway” - a relief, yet we quickly wish it would come back. Maybe Green has the occasional good day or two, because “Lover Come Back” is cheesy yet annoyingly catchy and self-deprecating in the typical CC fashion. If someone could promise him a bunch of hugs I’d rather keep him sad. Pep is wet blanket for his talent. FKA twigs Honeymoon Young Turks

Monster Magnet Cobra and Fire (The Mastermind Redux) Napalm Records

If Steppenwolf, The Doors, Black Sabbath, and Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie managed to get together and produce some kind of abominable demon spawn, you might wind up with something similar to Monster Magnet. Only hitting the mainstream once in the late ‘90s with the infectious “Space Lord” single, Monster Magnet might very well be the most underappreciated rock n’ roll band of the last quarter century. Last month saw the release of Cobras and Fire (The Mastermind Redux), a reimagining of their 2010 release, Mastermind. This is by no means a cashgrabbing reissue, but an album inspired by previous work that firmly stands on its own. Monster Magnet’s sound is quite difficult to nail down in words, though two things are certain. First, it’s immediately obvious why, despite a more than a 20 year lifespan, this band only had a brief stay in the mainstream music scene. This is not commercial pop-rock built for the billboard charts. Second, Monster Magnet is the greatest band most rock fans have never taken the time to check out. This latest album isn’t going to see any major promotion. You might not even see it in your neighborhood music store (are there still music stores?). However, this latest release, as well as the band’s entire library is available through all the major streaming services. Do yourself a favor and use this write up for its intended purpose - a reason to get familiar with this consistently awesome, longoverlooked, beast of an American rock machine. Prepare to have your socks rocked off. - J. Robert Lobeck

Tahliah Debrett Barnett, the British artist known as FKA twigs has released her fourth collection (pronounced “Melissa”) in just four years. Critically acclaimed and a champion of style, both musically and as a director, Barnett has taken the power-pop R&B scene by storm. Her music is avant garde and ethereal, and for this EP she has a film to coincide. Controversial in nature, she has proven that success does not solely hinge on swimming up mainstream. At a bare 16:34, it’s still luscious. Conceptually, the film (featuring 4/5 songs) is uncomfortably entrancing, definitely NSFW and has been compared to the work of David Lynch. Notably more comfortable with her vocals, there’s more projection, clarity and less bleating breathlessness. It opens ornately with “Figure 8,” an electronic whir with heavenly bass and a gothic gypsy (fashion maven Michele Lamy) lit only by a single bulb. Disarmingly beautiful, it touches on the dreaded F-word (feminism) with lyrics such as “I am an angel (hush now)/ My back wings give the hardest slap that you’ve ever seen” and her falsetto is... whoa. “I’m Your Doll” purrs and clicks and “In Time” has more of a swerve and builds in true twigs form, with gutsy and straight-forward lyrics. But to say more would be a spoiler - it’s high art, and although the tracks can definitely stand alone, the whole package is necessary for the full experience. Whew. - Whitney Patterson
