We’re coming down the homestretch to the end of winter - the finish line is finally in sight. For those of you who actually enjoy this time of year (a head-scratcher for sure), it’s a tough break, but for the rest of us sane people out there in the community, the promise of spring and warmer temps means a return to the good life - i.e., there are all kinds of cool events on the horizon, from high profile concerts and fundraisers to everyone’s favorite excuse to enjoy a beer or two (who’s counting?). Yes, St. Patrick’s Day will see winter off with all kinds of fun and seemingly no end of green drinks at local bars. Check out our In Town & Around section

CMT Presents Jennifer Nettles with 2016 Next Women of Country Tour Ford Center / March 19

Sugarland’s multi-talented frontwoman keeps playing with fire, leaving expectations in the dust The title of Jennifer Nettles’ upcoming solo album - her second since taking a hiatus from the hugely popular country duo she fronts along with singer/songwriter Kristian Bush - pretty much sums it up. Playing with Fire, out on April 8, perfectly describes the career path of a performer who refuses to be boxed in, always looking to stretch out and take risks. That’s been especially apparent over the last couple of years. Not only did Nettles record That Girl, her 2014 debut, with famed producer Rick Rubin, she also starred on Broadway in the long-running musical Chicago and ventured into acting, playing Dolly Parton’s mother in the recent NBC TV movie, Coat of Many Colors. It all just went to show that the Georgia-born singer is more than capable of branching out on her own, regardless of the medium. In fact, Nettles seems to be hitting her prime as she approaches middle age. Just before hitting the road on the CMT tour with special guests Brandy Clarke, Lindsay Ell and Tara Thompson, Nettles kindly spoke with News4U about striking out on her own and more.

6|

Do you feel like you’re hitting you’re prime? It does seem like you’re in a real sweet spot right now. I love hearing that. I definitely feel more emboldened than I ever have in my life. And I think part of that is because of having a son - he’s three now. I really feel like I was reborn when he was born. I think there were a lot challenges for me in becoming a mother in terms of identity, but I think I came out on the other side of that even more emboldened by that experience of vulnerability. Now, I’m looking at opportunities and going, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ I want to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. Luckily, I seem to be getting a thumbs-up from the universe, and it feels like I’m on the right track. I sort of feel like somebody’s got to be happy; somebody’s got to go after their dreams and succeed; somebody has to tell that part of the story. Why not me? I’m a hard worker and I have, to me, what feels like a higher calling within myself of what I want to do in the world. I want to do good, and I want my storytelling to heal people and connect to them. Rick Rubin produced your 2014 debut, That Girl. Interestingly, he produced Black Sabbath prior to starting your project. Did he have a hand in choosing the dark, somber title track as the lead single? Rick doesn’t get involved in the politics of what is chosen as a first single to be released. However, where he is super involved in the process - especially on that record - is in the sound of it. His choices and sounds are all over that record and, consequently, you can hear it. It’s very much a reflection of where we were at the time, being in Malibu at the historic Shangri-La Studios, because there’s so much of a vintage California sound on the That Girl album. Working with Rick was an absolute, absolute joy; I would love to do it again.

So who produced the follow-up, Playing with Fire? I worked with Dan Huff out of Nashville. He’s just such a fantastic master, in my opinion, of taking an artist and elevating her - keeping her authenticity to who she is but elevating the overall song. And it’s still about the song [on the new album], but in comparison to That Girl, sonically, this album is much more layered and has a much bigger sound. That Girl was super organic, and I loved that about that project; and yet, as an artist, I’m constantly wanting to evolve and bring something new and tasty to my fans. And also I feel like for the past three years since I made That Girl, I have a whole lot more to say. You know, where I was in my life thematically when I recorded that album... I had a five month old child, and I was in that heavy, heavy veil of motherhood and really cont. on page 8

upcoming events wanted to feel myself by singing songs that I enjoyed singing and going through that process. And that record did just that for me. Yet, from a songwriting standpoint, on Playing with Fire I feel like I have a lot more to say. You received high praise for your role as Dolly Parton’s mother in Coat of Many Colors. When a film about your life is inevitably made, would you be interested in playing your own mother? Ah, what a sweet question. You know what, I would be honored if I was able to play my own mother, because something that I really enjoyed about playing Avie Lee, Dolly Parton’s mom, is that I did get to get in that space of what it would be like in the case of my own mother - to have a child who has a dream, to have a child who you see early on has a gift. My mom was that way with me and my singing and my music and the way that she encouraged me. It was very similar to what I saw in the character of Avie Lee. You recently joked that you are the “old broad” of the upcoming CMT tour. When you were first starting out, what “older” country star would you have loved to support? From a career standpoint, who stands out in my mind as far as country music is Reba McEntire. I really emulate her - she’s had such a well-rounded and diverse career. She and I are similarly turned in that way - that need to diversify. I mean, she did Broadway as well. She’s done television and acting; she’s gotten into her own clothing and makeup line. And that’s all in addition to - and spring boarded from - who she is as a storyteller and as an interpretive artist. So, I love her, and she is a friend; any time that I get to spend with her is always helpful. But also at the time that I was coming through the ranks, Faith Hill would have been lovely, too. At the time, where she was and where I was, if we look at it as a parallel, it would have been commensurate sort of with what I’m doing right now on this tour. The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter. com or jennifernettles.com.

Guns & Hoses IX

The men in blue look to put out the fire at the Ford Center on April 9

T

alk about a main event. Every year, the finest members of our local police department and the top drafts from area fire departments do battle in the boxing ring, fighting for bragging rights. And it’s all in the name of charity. Specifically, that “name” is Mykenna - or “Mickey” as EPD Detective Patrick Phernetton’s daughter is affectionately known. Her struggle with Prader-Willi syndrome was the inspiration for this epic showdown that began almost a decade ago. By now, many of you may be familiar with Mickey’s disease. She and other people like her exist in a constant state of hunger and if left unattended, they can literally eat themselves to death. Phernetton has made it his goal to raise enough money for the construction of a group home where those who suffer from PraderWilli syndrome can live and prosper in a safe environment. The proceeds from the annual Guns & Hoses event (overseen by 911 Gives Hope, a group of police officers, firefighters and paramedics) are directed towards this effort as well as a VERY long list of local organizations that do great work for children with disabilities. To date, 911 Gives Hope has raised over $750,000! The charitable aspect of Guns & Hoses makes it a truly amazing event, but the action inside the ring takes it to another level entirely. In reality,

10 |

there’s nothing charitable about the way the two departments go at each other in the ring - the gloves are off, so to speak. There is tremendous respect between the police and the firefighters, but once that bell rings, it’s on. For the duration of 15 matches, both sides give it everything they have and then some. Last year, the Hoses claimed a razor-thin 8-7 victory, but the Guns are determined to take back the belt. One particularly interesting match-up sees Sgt. Samuel Smith of the EPD take on Boonville firefighter Charlie Connor. Smith may be 49, but his 30 years of MMA and Judo training, including numerous black belts, have prepared him for the physical demands of a pressurepacked boxing match. Still, he’s very aware of the challenge Connor presents. “He’s a brawler - he’s a heavy hitter and he’s going to try and knock me out,” Smith says. “But it’s as much a mental battle as anything, and my background has prepared me for the spotlight. Some guys can’t handle the glare of 8,000 people, but I’m very comfortable with it.” Mike Doran of the Evansville Fire Department is also very familiar with the pressure of Guns & Hoses. Despite an impressive 5-2 record at the event, he’s the first to admit that it’s difficult to perform at your best in front of so many people. “If you lose at Guns & Hoses, everyone

March 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

is going to know about it,” he says. “But win or lose, it’s a lot of fun and when you see the faces of the kids that you’re helping light up, it’s a great feeling.” The 43-year-old veteran of the ring trains year-round and is ramping things up heading into the final days as he waits to find out which Gun he’ll face this year. Come out to the Ford Center and show your support for all the charities that Guns & Hoses benefits! The event starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit 911giveshope.com.

EvilleCon 2016: Year of the Monkey

Evansville’s very own anime convention is back with a little something for everyone

F

or the seventh year running, EvilleCon returns to the Old National Events Plaza to bring together fans of Japanese animation - or “anime” as it’s referred to here in the west. The 2016 convention takes place March 18-20 and will feature several high profile special guests plus a number of exciting events that should keep attendees of all ages entertained, making it a familyfriendly weekend of fun. The theme of EvilleCon 2016 is “Year of the Monkey (February 8, 2016 - January 27, 2017) ,” a nod to the Chinese zodiac. It adds yet another interesting element to one of the tri-state’s most popular conventions, a gathering that attracts thousands of anime lovers to the Evansville area and impacts the community in a very positive way - both in terms of cultural education and prosperity. Special guests are always the biggest draw at EvilleCon, and this year will be no different. The 2016 lineup includes two very talented and beloved voice over artists, Bryce Papenbrook and Jessica Calvello. A professional since the age of eight, Papenbrook has performed in numerous video games, cartoons and television shows. Recently, he’s been featured as Eren in Attack on Titan and Kirito in Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online II - but that’s barely scratching the surface of his impressive resume. Calvello began working in the dubbing industry with ADV Films back in 1995. Her very first role was in Evangelion and she’s been in demand ever since. Other special guests this year include cosplayers Malindachan and Ex-Shadow plus authors Rebekah McAuliffe, Robert Midgett and Shane Moore. Events-wise, expect another great Cosplay Contest and Pokemon Tournament as well as EvilleCon’s Got Talent and the human chess match, Ox King’s Cosplay Chess. For more info and to purchase badges, visit evillecon.com. The Old National Events Plaza is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

Animalpalooza Annual Yard Sale

7255 Nottingham Dr. • Newburgh, Indiana • March 19th

Time to do some spring cleaning and donate your household items to help area animals in need

C

hances are you’re familiar with Animalpalooza by now. The annual Animal Benefit & Music Festival has become a huge event each September, raising much-needed funds for local animal rescues and shelters. Last year, thousands of people converged on Burdette Park for an amazing weekend that not only showcased the tri-state’s best bands but also the high-flying action of DockDogs and so much more. The mission of Animalpalooza is quite simple: help homeless animals as well as save lost dogs and reduce euthanasia at Animal Control facilities. To that end, they have been very successful; however, the work of advocating for animals in need is never done. On March 19, Animalpalooza will host its Annual Yard Sale, another very important event designed to supplement the funds raised in September. Each year, animal lovers in the community are asked to donate items from home - virtually anything that can be turned into cash, including furniture and bigger items. Donations can be dropped off at the Warrick Humane Society during regular business hours. The money generated by this unique yard sale will go to support the WHS and WAG, a 501c3 organization established to help with funds for Warrick County Animal Control. Despite all of the great work that these and other local organizations do year-round, there are still so many animals that need our help. This is a great opportunity to make a difference simply by donating items or coming to shop at the yard sale. Either way, the animals will benefit! The event runs from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. For more info, follow Animalpalooza on Facebook.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra presents: Classical Guitar & Beethoven’s Pastorale

March 19 performance at the Victory features the return of Croatian classical guitar virtuoso Ana Vidovic

F

ebruary saw the EPO doing double duty. On the Pops side of things, the orchestra presented “Dancing & Romancing” in celebration of Valentine’s Day, while the Classics side was covered by a stirring performance of Mendelssohn’s epic oratorio, Elijah. This month sees Maestro Savia and his supremely talented group of players reunite with an “old” friend to take on the lush and lyrical Guitar Concerto No. 1 by Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Back by popular demand, 35-year-old Croatian classical guitar virtuoso Ana Vidovic will team with the EPO once again and remind everyone why she’s a world-renowned performer. In addition, the March 19 concert at the Victory will include William Bolcom’s 20th century parody of the classical style and Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6, a poetic depiction of the beauty and power of nature. Vidovic is the very definition of a child prodigy, having begun her mastering of the classical guitar at the young age of five. Over the next several years, she began performing publicly, ultimately reaching an international audience that has been growing in size ever since; and so has her collection of prestigious awards. In fact, Vidovic claims an impressive haul of first prizes at international competitions, including the Albert Augustine International Competition in Bath, England, the Fernando Sor Competition in Rome, Italy and the Francisco Tarrega Competition in Benicasim, Spain. She has also recorded six albums and released two DVDs. Vidovic’s performance alone would make for a fantastic night of music, but the EPO will also present Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6, a complex piece that was composed alongside his famous Fifth Symphony back in the early 1800’s. Described as “less fiery”

beauty advice

Beauty Date with Dakyissa Cleon It’s March, YAY! I absolutely love this time of year. The snow stops falling and the flowers start blooming. I also get to celebrate my birthday, WootWoot!

Inner Beauty Wow, it’s hard to believe that on March 25, I will be 30 years old! Time sure does fly. Has anyone else ever thought about what it would be like if we could revisit the past? Let’s all think about that for a second. Who were you in the past? How does that compare to who you are today (are you better or worse)? What did you dream of doing at this time in your life? Are you doing it (if not, why aren’t you)? What were some of your experiences? Are any of your negative experiences still lingering in your heart today? I think every now and then, it’s good to think about these things. Naturally, we get used to repetitive actions. That tends to get us complacent and it can be easy to forget our life goals. It’s good to take time every now and then to remind ourselves of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

Outer Beauty Spring tends to be a time most of us like to spruce up our beauty routine and kit. If this is you, I’m here to help. Check out a few of my beauty faves:

getting to know...

Claire Ballard

Asst. Brand Mgr./Afternoon Host at HOT 96 1. Coolest person I’ve met through my job... I’ve been lucky to meet a lot of cool people - mostly musicians! Everyone from Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett, Kacey Musgraves and Sam Hunt to Ciara, Ne-Yo, Tori Kelly, DJ Snake, Tove Lo, Imagine Dragons and more. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Sheryl Crow. I grew up loving her music, and she was so kind and genuine in person. 2. A TV show I can’t believe I watch... Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I know some people find their fame offensive, but I don’t take it that seriously. I think it’s a mistake to judge people in the public eye that you don’t know personally, and so I just find their ridiculous, chaotic lives to be very entertaining. 3. How I’ll spend St. Patrick’s Day... That’s a great question! I love fun holidays like this one. Hopefully HOT 96 will be throwing a party somewhere, but regardless, I’m sure I’ll be out wearing green and drinking a Guinness.

her college friends. There were bikinis, red solo cups, pool floats and lots of twerking. It was straight out of a movie, and it was awesome. 8. Biggest difference between young Claire and adult Claire... I’m still not sure I’m adult me yet. I’ve definitely learned a lot in my six years post-college, like how to work hard, work smart, work with people you don’t like, get to work on time, get enough sleep and drink better wine. I’m also a lot closer to figuring out who I am and what I want out of life. My place is still always a wreck, I never get caught up on laundry or dishes, and I’m nowhere close to having a family, which feels like a symbol of adulthood, especially in this area of the country.

9. My thoughts on social media... Social media is a major extension of my show. I’m active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, and I share my personal life, anything else I think is relatable or entertaining, and links to my blog. I believe it’s really important for a radio personality and a radio station to have a great social presence with lots of engagement from the community, and I think the best way to do that is to create 4. Best song I’ve spun so far in 2016... gratification. One of my goals for the new year is to listen to more music away relatable content that provides instant from the radio station. I listen to music all day long here, so I don’t take enough time to put on artists I love that we don’t play like 10. Plans for the summer... Chris Stapleton, Andra Day, or Courtney Barnett when I get home. I’m really bad at plans. My vision of the afterlife... I’d like to imagine that there’s a need for some form of radio in vacation and go back heaven, and I’m providing entertainment and directing everyone to to Vegas and visit the best parties and events at my leisure. My dog, Shea, is definitely my friends. gathering place for both locals and travelers alike since the mid 1800’s, the Hornet’s Nest still offers exceptional hospitality and so much more. With an eclectic crowd of regulars, passersby, traveling foodies and families, as well as a booming nightlife, the restaurant has something for everyone. Their menu ranges from tavern fare to carefully-crafted, chefinspired specials, but there is nothing regular about an item that leaves their kitchen. Their dedication to provide the total experience is apparent, and the longstanding success of their establishment is proof of that. Head Chef Jeremiah Galey was more than excited to share his creations. Starting in October of last year, Galey has already increased volume with his weekend specials, not seeking to change the existing menu, but to expand, particularly for special events. For my visit, the off-menu items were incredible. A double-boned smoked pork chop was first, crusted and seasoned to perfection, easily cut with a tender center. Sided with purple potato mash and crunchy

grilled asparagus, it was a dish beyond expectation. Next was juicy seared lamb with a wild rice blend, spinach, and fresh mint and melt-in-your-mouth seared duck breast with petite potatoes, sliced pear, bacon, and fresh raspberries. If you’re seeking something more

simple, you’re in the wrong place, and I only say that because even their regular menu items might seem like something one can get anywhere, but they’re still a cut above. For example, their cheeseburger is ground and

March 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

pattied in-house, thick and juicy, cooked to order, and their fried mushrooms and onion rings are hand-battered fresh. I also highly recommend the bacon-wrapped filet mignon; I’m very picky about steak but no sauce was needed - it was thick, flavorful, and spot-on in temperature. Next trip: prime rib. Rumor is, it’s the best in town. The Hornet’s Nest also offers a Sunday buffet with a meat carving station, omelets made to order, and all-you-can-eat fried chicken, catfish, breakfast, dessert bar, and more. Besides the wide range of menu choices, a full bar, and comfortable environment, they also host karaoke on the weekends. Located just several minutes from the airport, it’s worth the visit regardless of your location. Come for the history and delicious food, stay for the ambiance - you won’t be disappointed. - Whitney Patterson For more info, including hours and daily specials, follow Hornet’s Nest on Facebook and visit thehornetsnestin.com.

Penny Lane Lamasco

N

ot much is missing from Evansville’s famous Franklin Street, and now it’s that much closer to having it all. Penny Lane Coffeehouse, already a favorite on both the east side and downtown, has recently set up shop inside Lamasco Bar & Grill. What goes better with a breakfast burrito or biscuits and gravy than a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee or an espresso? Well, maybe a bloody Mary, but the most fantastic part is that now it’s all an option in one great place. Of course, Penny Lane offers more than coffee - their creatively-named specialty drinks, tea, and smoothies are delicious, and although the new shop won’t offer a full menu, they plan to serve some pastries and baked goods for customers on-the-go. They’re also working on some new drinks (inspired by music, of course) named after local bands and artists such as Osiella, Boscoe France and Tastes Like Chicken. I’m definitely intrigued by that last one! So how did this power duo relationship come to fruition? Penny Lane owner Brian Bennett explains, “I’ve always wanted to open a shop on Franklin Street and there was never the right building or opportunity, in my opinion. Penny Lane is more of a walk-up-and-buy-coffee establishment versus a drivethru, grab some blah normal coffee and drive off. I was having breakfast at Lamasco one day and it hit me that Lamasco was the exact same way and didn’t offer the signature drinks and coffee that Penny Lane does.” After the light bulb went off, it was a quick agreement on Lamasco owner Amy Rivers Word-Smith’s part, and here we are with a booming Franklin Street establishment that not only offers some of the best breakfast around but also incomparable refreshments. - Whitney Patterson

Penny Lane (inside Lamasco) business hours: Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-noon; Sat 7 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sun 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more info, visit pennylanecoffeehouse. com and follow them on Facebook.

Spring is right around the corner, and craft breweries will be sending out the specialty brews that help bring to life the change of seasons. If you enjoy a milder flavor with a fruity or floral tone, then you will enjoy most of the spring and summer beers. In fact, there are some great seasonal IPAs that always get people excited about the arrival of warmer weather. Here are two of our favorites. Bell’s Hopslam Ale - Starting with six different hop varieties added to the brew kettle and culminating with a massive dryhop addition of Simcoe hops, this craft beer possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style. Sun King Fistful of Hops (Blue) - The key to most Sun King beers is their perfect balance of flavors, a quality that has resulted in a litany of awards for the brewery. Fistful of Hops is the quarterly series of IPAs brewed by Sun King, each of which uses the same malt base. They balance that base against a seasonal “fistful of hops” - each time a different variety. For the first Fistful release of 2016, Centennial, Chinook and Waimea hops converge to create a wonderful balance of floral, citrus and pine flavors, resulting in a delicious craft beer. Also, St. Patrick’s Day is March 17. It’s always our favorite day of the year here at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. We will be running a special menu that includes some of our Irish favorites. Rest assured our corn beef and cabbage and green beer will hit the spot. We look forward to seeing you.

J

ust off Frederica on Owensboro’s east side is a colorful gem known as Papa Grande. In May they will celebrate three years of serving mouthwatering familyrecipe-inspired dishes from their native city of Guadalajara in Jalisco, a coastal Mexican state. Hard-working entrepreneur and owner Oscar Umbral was more than happy to share his delectable creations and sit down for a chat after making sure the busy lunch rush went smoothly. The warm, fresh tortilla chips were an excellent vehicle for their spicy, somewhat smoky salsa, and a specialty dip they simply call “white sauce” - a tangy dressing with secret spices, resembling ranch but with a taste I’ve personally never experienced before. The pico de gallo was fresh, a perfect addition to the chile con queso - seasoned ground beef smothered in melted Chihuaha cheese and white queso atop soft corn tortillas. I’m a big dipper, so of course I couldn’t turn down fresh guacamole, prepared swiftly and table-side by Javier, the guacamole master. For the main courses, I chose Pollo Norteño and Carne Asada. The first dish consisted of savory, tender grilled chicken, red peppers,

onions, fiery jalapenos, tomatoes, and creamy queso with a side of rice and beans and flour tortillas. The rice and beans were definitely the most authentic I’ve tasted in a long time. The Carne Asada is grilled flank steak, thin and marinated to perfection, topped with whole grilled green onions, served with lettuce and more fresh pico, and rice and beans. Sometimes Carne Asada can be too fatty or too chewy - this was not the case at Papa’s. In lieu of dessert, I had a “medium” (32 oz - whoa) house margarita, stiff but not overwhelming, with a great mix of ingredients and not too much sweet and sour.

Southern Charm

Casual is the key at one of Owensboro’s favorite and fairest-priced - clothing boutiques

S

outhern Charm co-owner Tracey Culyer has retail in her blood. For years, her parents worked as importer/exporters, dealing in clothing and shoes. When her dad passed, she and brand manager/co-buyer Allen Payne considered opening a boutique, but the timing just wasn’t right. Finally, in November 2014, Southern Charm became a reality when they located the perfect spot on 18th Street in the Old Towne Shopping Center. “It started out to be a casual men’s and women’s clothing store with a southern feel - lots of t-shirts,” Payne explains. “But Tracey said we should concentrate on women’s apparel as she loves shopping and so do many of her friends. So when we opened, it ended up being about 95% women’s [clothing].” Over time, however, the boutique became more inclusive as wordof-mouth, Facebook and Instagram all helped to increase its clientele - and allow for the opening of a second location on Highway 54. With more space, they were able to expand Southern Charm’s appeal. “We were limited on 18th Street, but now we’re going to dive in heavy and dedicate a quarter of the new 54 store to men and launch our Southern Gent line - casual t-shirts, button-downs; nothing fancy or high-priced.” Above all, Culyer and Payne are determined to keep Southern Charm affordable. “We know that for a young woman, single mother or multi-child family, it’s a struggle and that you can’t always go out and buy the newest, hottest thing right away,” Payne says. “We search out the newest trends and try to find a supplier that allows us to offer a fair price.” Southern Charm is located at 113 E. 18th St. and 3811 Hwy 54 in Owensboro. An Interview with Jenny Beth Willis

Former American Idol finalist talks about her unforgettable reality TV experience and life after elimination any way? And how did the other contestants treat you, especially considering that you were so young? When that season started, there was definitely a lot of talk in the media about Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey having a feud, but I didn’t really see a whole lot of it. When I was on the show, the judges were all super nice to me, and I never saw any cattiness between any of them. As for the contestants, everyone was in the same boat; everyone was nervous and dealing with the pressures of being on the show. I didn’t experience any meanness from other people. But I didn’t really hang around with a lot of the older contestants - they all went off and did their own thing at night.

Owensboro’s Jenny Beth Willis was all of 17 when she signed up for season 12 of the iconic singing competition. At the time, she had no way of knowing just what an amazing Idol ride was ahead - that her talent would take her all the way to Las Vegas for the live TV round in front of millions of viewers. But the tiny teenager with the big voice was a favorite right from her first audition in Baton Rouge, LA. Post-Idol, Willis has pursued a college degree in the Music City with dreams of becoming a professional singer. Still, she’s not getting ahead of herself. With a support team that includes her mother/ manager Mary Beth and musical mentor, Randy Lanham, Willis is moving ahead cautiously, smartly preparing for whatever life brings her way. Season 12 effectively became the Mariah Carey vs. Nicki Minaj show. Did the infighting between the judges affect you in

lot better because I’ve become a lot more confident since appearing on the show. Still, I feel like I did my best at the time. Let’s talk Hollywood week and the Las Vegas live TV round. How much pressure did you feel? It was definitely unlike anything I have ever experienced. It was so nerve-racking, because you’re performing in front of all of the other contestants during Hollywood week and you’ve got all these cameras in your face. You really want to prove yourself and show everyone that you deserve to be there. When we got to Las Vegas, I was actually the first person out of the top 40 to perform. The whole time I just kept thinking, ‘This is live on TV - everybody is watching what I’m doing.’ It’s a really strange feeling, and I’ve never felt like that again since. But any time that I get nervous now, I just try to remind myself that if I can do American Idol, I can handle anything.

Speaking of pressure, did your age help to calm you at all - the fact that you were inexperienced and had nothing to lose? Youth did not help - totally the opposite (laughs). As one of the youngest contestants on the show, it was hard for me to go into that environment. It really made me have to act like an adult. I was mature, but it was still a really intimidating atmosphere. I feel like if I were to do it now, I would do a whole

Looking back, what was the best feedback you received from the judges and who gave it to you? The best feedback I got happened when I first auditioned in Baton Rouge. That’s when I got the most one-on-one contact with the judges. And I remember that Nicki Minaj told me that she could listen to me sing all day long. And then Randy Jackson told me that I had the purest tone of voice that they had heard all day - he thought I was born to sing. I was really excited after that, and it’s something that I’ll definitely never forget. Was it strange at all to return to daily life after you were eliminated? I missed about three months of school, so it was a really weird transition coming back. But the day I came back, they had a pep rally welcoming me home, so that was really neat. After Idol, I started getting a lot more calls to come and sing at events; I also started doing Friday After Five in Owensboro and sang at ROMP. A lot of those opportunities wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the exposure that Idol gave me. I wouldn’t trade my Idol experience for the world - would do it all again in a heartbeat. Post-Idol you released an EP which included several original songs. Have you always been interested in songwriting? I didn’t write a lot before Idol, but afterwards I started collaborating with my mentor, Randy Lanham. I love doing it, and we make a good songwriting team. I felt like I needed to put something out - not that a ton of people knew who I was, but around the area I thought that fans would like to hear the music. Around that time, I was invited to be on Randy and his brother’s TV show, Lanham Brothers Jamboree, alongside country star Wade Hayes. Wade was impressed by me; he reached out to me and helped me record the EP - even brought in Toby Keith’s band. Randy played on the EP as well. Wade found some songs written by professionals in Nashville, and we also included a few that Randy and I wrote together. It’s a really good representation of who I am and the music I like - I’m very proud of it. You cite Martina McBride as your inspiration to sing. What makes her so special to you? Ever since I was little I can remember listening to her in the car with my mom - I would always sing along to her CDs. I always thought that we had similar voices - she’s tiny like me but can belt really powerful notes. I also just really like the way that she sings - similar to Carrie Underwood. I want to be a powerhouse singer like both of them. So, what’s life like for you in Nashville right now? I’m currently studying Music Business at Trevecca Nazarene University. Obviously, I want to be a singer but so do a million other people. If that happens, that’s awesome, but I want to be realistic and have something to fall back on. The plan right now is to go to law school and do entertainment law here in Nashville. But after graduation, I think I’d like to take a year and really pursue my dream of being a singer. We’ll see what happens. For more info, visit jennybethwillis.net.

Old Salt Union

It’s all about that upright bass: OSU’s Jesse Farrar discusses new EP, the organic process of music-making and more

F

ormed in 2012 in Belleville, IL (10 minutes from downtown St. Louis), Old Salt Union is quite unlike any other bluegrass band around. In fact, the five members’ influences cover classical, hip-hop, jam bands, jazz and pop, which goes a long way in explaining how they’ve developed such an unorthodox approach to the one genre that has united them. Over the course of two albums and a ton of live shows, including memorable sets at Lamasco and ROMP, the band has slowly figured out how to make the pieces fit. This musical clarity is fully evidenced on Cut and Run, a new EP out digitally on March 22 (physical version drops March 25). The recording reflects OSU’s constant pursuit of forward progression; it’s the sound of five extremely talented musicians refusing to pander to expectations. With so many varied influences, how difficult was it to get everybody on the same musical page? I don’t know if there was a synergy at first with the band or if there wasn’t, but because it was new to all of us at the time, we weren’t sure what it was supposed to sound like. So what we did was just continue to try and grow with it. And I think just now - we’ve been a band for

three years or more just now we’ve found our stride with this new EP we’ve got coming out. It was a lot of trial and error, but I think we’ve finally kind of settled into it. We had some good shows initially that let us know we could continue to do this, but from the inside out, it’s just now starting to look and feel the way we anticipated it would feel. It’s been an organic process - whatever happens, happens. Sometimes we sound like the Punch Brothers - sometimes like the Johnson Mountain Boys or Bill Monroe and sometimes it doesn’t sound like anybody; it doesn’t matter. How long have you been playing upright bass? And do you play in a bluegrass style or put your own spin on it? I’ve been playing stand-up bass since I was 13 - started playing music at nine. Everybody in my family played music, so I didn’t really have a choice. I went to Eastern Illinois University as a major in jazz performance - double major in music education. I was a jazz player but hiphop and pop music in general always intrigued

March 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

me. With all of that in mind, I definitely don’t play bluegrass upright bass - that became apparent a couple of years ago when we started getting on these traditional bluegrass festivals. I think I approach it mentally in almost an urban, hip-hop fashion - meanwhile I’m maintaining this jazz approach of playing things that are exciting and kind of more melodic but then putting it right in people’s faces in a hip-hop kind of way, saying, ‘you should focus on this.’ The bluegrass genre has been going strong for a number of years with new bands popping up all the time. How challenging was it for OSU to stand out from the crowd initially? At the time that we formed, we were kind of blind to the new uprising of bluegrass. I know that [the film] O Brother, Where Art Thou? and a lot of things that happened in the early 2000s kind of put bluegrass in popular culture or at least shined some light on it. But when I was asked to join a bluegrass band, I know I was thinking the Johnson Mountain Boys and Hank Williams - that’s what I had in my mind. I didn’t even know about this new resurgence. So, I think that what we did that was different. The first couple songs that I was writing, I wasn’t writing them like the new resurgence of bluegrass - I was kind of writing them in this

fashion that wouldn’t sound like any bluegrass I’d heard before. I think that kind of gave us an edge initially - and the same with all the other writers in the band. So, I don’t think we were even aware of the uphill battle we were fighting at the beginning. But now at this point, we’ve played with all the guys that have been around since 2004/2005, and now I kind of feel like we’re a part of it even though we were latecomers in a way. Talk about the progression of the band from the first album, Western Skies, to the new EP. For the first record, Ryan (Murphey) had just picked up the banjo and Justin (Wallace) had just picked up the mandolin and figured it out. Justin had a stockpile of songs from being in other bands. By the time I joined the band, they already had eight or nine songs that were done. I came in and wrote “Where I Stand” within the first month or two, and we were ready to record within 4 or 5 months. It was sort of a wiping the board clean before starting to write Old Salt Union songs with everybody collaborating. [Our second album] Bridge was our first effort of cooperative ideology. I don’t think we quite figured it out, but we were ready to release new music. We’d been playing a lot of it live, so we wanted to get it out. As a band, we also didn’t really know how to record this kind of music - what sounded best for us. So Bridge was kind of a shot in the dark. For Cut and Run we knew what we wanted, and we’re much better musicians than we were on the previous record. We decided to do it in St. Louis where the studio is easily accessible and we got all the top dogs there that we know to help us out and give it a hometown feel. We didn’t leave any rock unturned. We neglected some things on the previous two records, but we made sure for this one that we put our foot down - this is us saying, ‘Here’s Old Salt Union.’ For tour dates and more info, visit oldsaltunion.com and follow OSU on Facebook.

Jason Lee McKinney

‘Rock star professor’ returning to Evansville for a raucous set at Piston’s, making headway on national radio

N

o one’s quite sure where he finds the time to keep up with all of his creative and intellectual pursuits, but country singer/songwriter Jason Lee McKinney somehow pulls it all off in fine fashion. In truth, the Nashville musician is hard to categorize - and that’s just how he likes it. His early recordings definitely erred on the side of country but with the 2015 release of Play Something You Believe Vol. 1&2, McKinney expanded the sound - or more accurately, left concerns about radio-friendliness behind. True to someone who holds a doctorate, an MBA and BA in Management, it was a smart move. In fact, once he and his bandmates stopped chasing commercial success, the songs poured out, taking on a harder edge both lyrically and musically. Comparisons to Tom Petty and even Led Zeppelin are pretty spot-on, but McKinney still has a soft side as evidenced by the acoustic collection of tracks on Volume 2. It’s clear that while fans love the raw, southern rock/bluesy feel of “Name in a Song” and “Distant Shore,” there’s still plenty of room for the laidback approach of “Barstool Fellowship” and “Company You Keep.” Interestingly, now that McKinney is writing strictly for himself, he’s catching fire on the airwaves. In January, a national radio campaign to the Americana, Texas Red Dirt and Music Row formats began, resulting in regular rotation on 27 stations so far. And on the visual end of things, he recently debuted a video for the aforementioned “Distant Shore,” a black-and-white minimovie of sorts that perfectly captures the grittiness of the track. Meanwhile, Mckinney and his band continue to tour extensively, including several trips to Europe. But on March 5 you can see their incredible live show right here in Evansville at Piston’s. For more info, visit jasonleemckinneyband.com and follow him on Facebook.

Brooke Spitler Pennies from Hell

I

n elementary school, when my classmates were collecting Pokemon cards, I was busy collecting something, too - coins. Which led no one to question me when I boasted that my grandma made all my clothes. These are just a couple examples of my many childhood crimes against popularity. Now as an adult my nostalgia for coins, especially American coinage, brings me to ponder the one coin with as much wavering popularity as I had in my K-12 school years. That coin is the penny. It’s debated almost every year as to whether it should stay in circulation. It may be surprising, but I believe they’re a pretty worthless part of our currency. When it’s not illegal for attractions to have a crank machine that smashes a penny into an oblong memento that ultimately ends up in the junk drawer, that’s when the government and its citizens really don’t care about its value. Many people simply throw them away when they receive them back as change! The best example to me is at gas stations where bowls of pennies by the register are there for the taking. That’s just a pile of free money that’s as worthless as the promotional local sports tickets typically located next to them. What’s keeping them around? Simply, the deep rooted nostalgia for pennies keeps them around. It’s as if ridding them from our currency would be akin to giving away a Bible to a thrift store. But take heart, America. If Canada can do it, we can, too!

Mar 20: ZZ Top ZZ Top, aka “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and, in 2004, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them - Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard - but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after almost 45 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. With the release of each of their albums, the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ Top is the same but always changing. ZZ Top’s music is always instantly recognizable, eminently powerful, profoundly soulful and 100% Texas American in derivation. The band’s support for the

arts & activities blues is unwavering both as interpreters of the music and preservers of its legacy. They have sold millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms and are true rock icons but, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done. Ask the Pastor

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

Should a person who believes in God also believe in ghosts, aliens and other phenomena?

LOBECK’S LOWDOWN

“Believe” is a strong and powerful word. To “believe” in something is to place one’s trust, reliance, even dependence on another. Trust, reliance - even faith - is something that should be placed in another only after long, thoughtful (and I would add, prayerful) consideration. Ultimately, for people of faith, faith is placed in God first and foremost. Other trust relationships find their place after that. Placing one’s trust, reliance - even faith in ghosts, aliens, and other unexplained phenomena seems a bit of a stretch. However, part of our nature as temporal human beings is that we seem to be filled with wonder. We are fascinated by the unknown, the unidentified, the mysterious. That kind of fascination is the beginning of discovery. After all, there was a time when everyone thought the earth was flat, which inspired theorizing and discovery. Being filled with wonder, possessing an inquisitive mind, giving one’s energy to discovery seems to be one of our great capacities as human beings. It is a capacity, I believe, that was given to us by God. When we use it to discover what was previously unknown, I believe God delights. Trust, reliance - even faith - is best placed in God. But how much greater is faith filled with wonder. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

Monthly musings on music, movies and pop culture

Schadenfreude If you’re anything like me, sometimes you get a sense that something is a little off. Maybe it’s this bizarre presidential race, or maybe it’s the way a worldwide social media network almost crashed recently under the weight of a former stripper’s comments about a certain rapper’s bedroom preferences. This is what we care about? These are the important events of the day? How did we get to this place? I was watching one of those 30 for 30 ESPN documentaries called “June 17th, 1994.” For those of you that may not know, that was the day of the infamous O.J. Simpson police chase. I was 12 when this happened and watched it live with my parents. The documentary focused on the media coverage of the events that took place from the day of the murders, up through the chase itself. Revisiting this for the first time as an adult, I started to see this as a possible turning point in our culture. Yes, we have always been a society fixated on celebrity. Somehow though, this was different. On that day in 1994, we decided that this retired athlete’s low-speed chase was the single most important issue we faced as a nation. How many other crimes happened in the U.S. that day? How many other desperate, non-celebrities had a gun to their head as the media broadcast O.J. whining and mumbling to the cops? In one memorable shot from a news copter, you see all the other copters off to the side. It looked like some kind of invasion by air was taking place. In reality, it was just the media chasing an old ballplayer. The Simpson police chase, and the trial that followed, ranked number three on a Nielson survey for the highest-rated, most impactful television moments in history. It was barely beaten by coverage of Katrina and 9/11. Do you see the problem here? I believe this was the turning point. The media is about money, and nothing else. The higher the ratings, the higher the profits. When Simpson’s ratings came in, the formula fell into place. Those events made it clear that we didn’t want our celebrity scandals relegated to the checkout line tabloids. We were fed up with boring news stories about serious, meaningful issues. We want to be entertained, constantly. We wanted escapism. We demanded voyeurism. Looking back after 22 years, I’d say we got exactly what we asked for. So, are we still happy with our choice? J. Robert Lobeck

Musgrave a GOP rogue but a proven winner

omeone asked me the other day if Evansville “has a decent music scene.” I responded with, “Surprisingly, yes. It’s a small pond with a lot of fish. We have a lot of great cover bands, and that’s what most of the general population wants to hear, but we also have a niche of fantastic original bands - we just don’t have many venues that host them.” I love both. It’s always interesting to hear the spin a band or artist makes on a cover song - sometimes I like it better than the original. If I wanted to hear an exact replica of the song, I would listen to the radio or the album itself. But for me, one of the best experiences in the world is stumbling across an unsigned band with original music and truly falling in love with it. It feels pure, like untouched snow, and intimate, because the whole world hasn’t heard it five million times. And I cannot imagine, in this climate of pop drivel, in our neck of the woods, that it’s easy to break into the scene with your own songs. It takes guts to share your art, but for the love of whatever, please do. All of those national acts that people pay $150 per ticket to see at the Ford Center started out like this, and while you may never make it into packed arenas, your creations may speak to one person and change their life. Or people may hate it, but screw them. Art is cathartic and subjective. Take chances and don’t let anyone tell you that your dreams are impossible or that you should be doing something more conventional. There are plenty of content sheep in the world, but you’re the only one who knows what you’re capable of and what regrets you don’t want to carry with you to the grave. To the so-called music lovers - get your asses to an indie show. Expand your freaking horizons. Spend $3-$5 to get in, soak up unknown talent, buy a damn CD, and tell your friends. No worries - you can still afford your 20th Jason Aldean concert. “I believe musicians have a duty, a responsibility to reach out, to share your love or pain with others.” -James Taylor Signed, Whitney Patterson - lurky local fangirl

Tri-State Politics

The Evansville GOP establishment might have picked the wrong foe to tangle with in the likes of Cheryl Musgrave. Musgrave, who some thought would run as an independent for mayor, is now running in a contested Republican primary against Alex Schmitt for county commissioner. Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has endorsed Schmitt. But what the establishment has done is underestimate Musgrave and her political skills. She’s a fighter. And she’s a winner. Musgrave was first elected to public office in 1994 as Vanderburgh County Assessor. In 2004, she ran for County Commissioner and defeated David Mosby. The Mosbys are a fixture in the Evansville political scene. During her term as County Commissioner, Governor Mitch Daniels appointed her as Commissioner of the State Department of Local Government Finance. In a lot of ways, Musgrave reflects Daniel’s pragmatic style of leadership. Musgrave’s only hiccup was when she ran for state representative in the mostly Democratic District 77. But despite Republicans being heavily outnumbered, she still only lost by 2% of the vote. Look for Musgrave to defeat Schmitt in the primary and force the GOP establishment to support her in the general election. The views and opinions expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of News4U.

Apr 1: Relay for Life In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer. Come take part in the amazing experience known as Relay for Life, an organized, overnight community fundraising walk that changes lives. arts beer & reviews activities Aloha Koko

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 8 Liquor Locker locations. www.Liquor-Locker.com

STLIPA

Sixpoint Crisp

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Koko Brown is an American Brown Ale and includes toasted coconut in the brewing process. Koko pours up clear, medium dark brown and generates a pretty one finger head that slowly fades but hangs around as you enjoy it. Its nose is of roasted malt, nuts, maybe some coconut (am I imagining that?) and what comes off to me as a booziness. That’s a little odd since it’s only 5.5 ABV. The taste mimics the aroma but has a more discernible coconut slant and includes notes of toffee and sweetness and some subtle vanilla. The mouthfeel is smooth and carbonation moderate, making this one a drinkable brew.

Daniel Knight • 3 This one comes in a pint bottle. No argument here. It’s a St. Louis-brewed Imperial (or Double) IPA and comes in at 8% ABV. It pours up a hazy, orange color with a one-finger, light khaki-colored head. It leaves a bit of lacing. The nose is as expected, of citrus and pine with some breadiness. The taste has a likable hop character up front that presents some sweetness followed by a less than expected bit of bitterness. There’s some floral and grassy notes on the finish as well. As a whole, this brew tastes more like an IPA than a DIPA. I liked it but won’t likely choose it again with so many other great options.

Paul Bragin • 3 This ale has a deep brown color that could almost pass for black. The nose contains a lot of malt notes as well as generous amounts of coconut used in the brewing process. The malt and coconut flavors remain when drinking the beer. This might be a good introduction for people who are new to craft beer. Pair it with barbecue, Thai curry or possibly serve it along with a dessert using coconut.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head forms on this golden India Pale Ale. The scent boasts a significant amount of hops, with pine notes coming through in the beginning. The hop notes continue with the first sip of the beer, with more citrus hops notes in the taste as well as the pine. This is very drinkable for a double IPA. Pair it with a spicy dish like chicken enchiladas or a Stilton blue cheese.

Daniel Knight • 4 Sixpoint is one of my favorite breweries. Crisp is a German Pilsner style. It’s clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It pours up with a thin white head that quickly dissipates and leaves a bit of lacing on its way down. The aroma is mildly sweet from the malts and most certainly includes more hops than any traditional pilsner. There are some herbal notes along with a touch of citrus as well. The flavor is of grain and malts upfront and a dry pilsner taste in the finish. It’s especially refreshing and drinkable and since it finishes with more hops than most pilsners, I like it more than most.

Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a dark beer with great flavor. I could taste the coffee and chocolate flavors, but it says it’s brewed with coconut which I didn’t really taste. Frankly, I love this beer just on the flavors it has. And even though it’s pretty dark, it’s not thick; in fact, it’s very easy to drink. This one’s been hard to find in Evansville but I’ll stock up the next time I come across it.

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a slightly darker/golden beer. This is about the best IPA that I have had; maybe they are finally growing on me. It does have the aggressive hops and pine flavors, but it doesn’t overpower your taste buds. I like the fact that the bitterness vanishes rather quickly so you can enjoy your next drink. And I especially like the pint bottle. I wish all beers were packaged like this.

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick white head tops this straw colored beer and never completely disappears. A decent hop presence dominates the scent profile, with some malt scent, too. The taste begins with some malt notes and switches to hop flavors in the finish. This is a very solid beer and will definitely be a great go-to choice during the summer months. This one would serve as an excellent way to introduce someone to craft beer. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a bright golden/orange beer. I could smell the malts and true to its name, it’s crisp - but overall, it’s just a little light on the flavors, though I could taste some citrus. It’s a little better than ok but nothing as super as some of the other Sixpoint offerings that I really like.

arts beer & reviews activities Sam Adams Cold Snap

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Cold Snap is a Witbier. Think Blue Moon or Shock Top but better in my opinion. It pours up with a short white head that quickly settles to a dense collar around the edge. The beer is very cloudy and murky yellow in color and has the expected active carbonation of its style. Its aroma is of oranges, coriander, and breadiness, with lemon and subtle grassy hop notes. The taste parallels the aroma with spices, orange and coriander. Although certainly not my favorite style of beer, I feel Sam Adams did a pretty good job with it.

Paul Bragin • 3.75 A thick white head rests on this unfiltered wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. Fruit and spices used in the brewing contribute to the scent profile. The fruit and spices remain while sipping the beer, with classic wheat beer flavors also present. This seems heavier than standard wheat beers, but it’s a good choice for cooler weather. Pair it with spicy food like quesadillas or enchiladas to complement flavors or a cheesesteak to contrast them. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a nice, hazy yellow beer that’s similar to a Blue Moon but better. It has a light, sweet citrus aroma and a taste to match. I could also detect some light flavors of coriander and orange peel. I could drink this beer all year, but unfortunately it’s a seasonal. I’d say that’s the only drawback.

Blue Moon First Peach Ale

Andrew Dyson • 4 After pouring this amber colored beer into my glass, I can’t help but smell peach right away. Once it sits for a second, the dry and tart tones begin to come out from underneath that initial sweet peach taste. This was the first time I tasted a peach ale, and my expectations were high. It did not disappoint. Overall, this is a refreshing ale that’s perfect for the coming spring; it would go great with a light, fresh meal or even some vanilla ice cream. I would definitely recommend this for people looking to add some flavor to their beer selection.

MOVIE REVIEW Where was St. Patrick Born? a. Britain b. Ireland c. Africa d. France

13 Hours (R) Paramount Pictures

13 Hours begins by giving a brief synopsis of what has occurred in Libya up to that point. This includes the overthrow and eventual killing of Libya’s former leader, Muammar Gaddafi. In the movie’s first scene, we’re introduced to Jack, a CIA contractor, reporting to his next assignment in Benghazi. His arrival takes place a few weeks before the attacks occur. Even though his arrival is weeks before the attack, it’s clear that Jack and his fellow contractors can be attacked at any time. The movie uses haunting music and slows down other scenes to give the audience the feeling that they are actually there and in the dark as to who the enemy is.

Benghazi. The city became worldwide news after Islamic militants, on September 11, 2012, raided two American compounds which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the ambassador. Benghazi also became a focal point during the 2012 presidential election. 13 Hours tells the backstory of Benghazi. And it hits a home run. The movie doesn’t get into the political propaganda that dominated cable news afterwards. Instead, it tells the story of the events as they occurred before and up to the attacks. Being apolitical was the right move as it would have taken away from the actual events as they were occurring.

Like Apollo 13 and Zero Dark Thirty, 13 Hours will keep you at the edge of your seat even though the outcome is already decided. The fight scenes are intense. It doesn’t portray the CIA contractors as John Waynes. Instead, they are portrayed as regular, everyday people assigned to perform a mission ala Saving Private Ryan. There are scenes showing Jack and his contractors talking to their families, yearning to come home. Directed by Michael Bay, 13 Hours is a heart-stopping, action-packed thriller. It will make you root for America and agonize over its sufferings. This movie is definitely worth your time and money, and it will not disappoint. - Bryan Fox

DVD R EVIEWS Gloria (R) Picturehouse

Based on the life of politically outspoken Mexican pop star Gloria Trevi (Sofia Espinosa), the biopic maps a desperate climb to stardom. After arriving in Brazil at the tender age of 12 to foster a career as a singer/ songwriter/ composer, she’s offered a spot in an all-girl band by washed-out producer Sergio Andrade (Marco Perez, Trade). With an unmatchable eagerness and allegiance to Andrade, despite his abuse and penchant for underage girls, she quickly rises above the rest and explodes onto the Latin music scene. With each successful tour, it becomes clear that Gloria is Andrade’s tool to regain fame and afford himself the lecherous pleasures he deems “unconventional,” housing a traveling compound of minors and fathering multiple children. When one former clan member speaks out, authorities turn their attention to not only Andrade, but also Trevi as an accomplice to multiple counts of kidnap and statutory rape. A gritty yet glittery view into the price of fame and desperation for love, Gloria is sometimes long-winded and patchy, but Espinosa gives a vibrant and authentic performance, embodying Trevi’s vulgar and unapologetic yet bubbly and lovable personality. Additionally, first-time Swiss director Christian Keller now has a crude gem up his sleeve; it’s energetic and worth the subtitles.

Universal

Oh, boy. It probably should have been titled Not Another Cult Flick, a copy-and-paste of Jonestown with some chemically-induced supernatural effects. The sole survivor of the mass suicide at Heaven’s Veil (a cult with hundreds of members), Sarah Hope (Lily Rabe, American Horror Story), agrees to revisit the compound for the first time in 25 years for the sake of a documentary. Siblings Maggie (Jessica Alba) and Christian (Jack De Sena) are making the documentary to better understand the suicide of their father, the primary FBI agent on the scene. On a lackluster hunt for missing tapes and reels, things start to get spooky and the crew’s behavior becomes increasingly strange, and as bits and pieces of Sarah’s childhood start to come back, it’s obvious that Maggie isn’t the only one who wanted her back on the compound. Even with some legit jumpy scenes and decent cinematography, it’s hard to get past Thomas Jane’s (The Punisher) over-the-top, cheese-fest portrayal of Jim Jacobs, the cult leader. Rabe does well as Sarah, but her characterization feels the same in nearly every role she takes, and it’s clear that horror is new to director Phil Joanou. Pure Hollywood turn-and-burn, it wasn’t completely horrible but also... not very good. Yawn. I’d recommend The Sacrament instead. - Whitney Patterson

arts music & activities reviews Panic At the Disco Death of a Bachelor DCD2/Fueled by Ramen Not a blip on the radar since the painfully cheerful “Nine in the Afternoon,” pop glam boy Brendon Urie is back with Death of a Bachelor. After a hiatus in 2013, original drummer and founding member Spencer Smith is out with no public plans to return. Slowing unraveling over the past several years looks good on Panic!, however. Personal tastes aside and critic G-card on the line, this album is (deep breath) pretty damn alright. “Victorious” and “I Write Sins, Not Tragedies” have already been beaten to death by the radio, and “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time” is solid PATD pop gold with no-breaths-taken vocals and surf riffs, so let’s get to the real deal. The freedom of shedding dissenting members has allowed Urie to explore, which he concedes to in “Emperor’s New Clothes,” and the titular track shows a smoother side to his voice. Sinatra-style crooning jazz melds into modern hip-hop beats with a little chip-tune thrown in. It just works. It’s hard to ignore the swing on the nostalgic “Crazy=Genius,” but “Impossible Year” is a dark, chilling finale. The sneering flamboyance that is Panic! remains, but there’s more than a gleam of promise of a new era, so here’s your chance to shut your brat mouth about the past and give it to us, Urie.

Vandaveer The Wild Mercury WhiteSpace Records Hardworking folk/pop duo Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin have released their fifth EP, a collection of bright, wellwritten ditties with tight instrumentals and chipper melodies. The pair have been showing off their soothing vocal relationship since 2007, but the new album shows growth as far as a fair balance of elements, sort of like a modern Simon & Garfunkel, and they’re not scared to stray from one sound. “But Enough on That For Now” is the first track - a bit misleading, because it’s almost shallow in comparison to other tracks - still wellexecuted, however, and “A Little Time Off Ahead” starts to shed the mainstream “folk” reinvention. The titular song is definitely a favorite Heidinger sounds like a son of Cat Stevens who’s fronting Modest Mouse if they went country, with authentic lyrics - “calling the shots/ connecting the dots/ the canvasses may change/ but blood is a constant.” “A Little Worse for the Wear” showcases Heidinger’s robust vocals, a little reminiscent of David Gray, and “Holding Patterns” definitely belongs in the ‘70’s rock/Americana atmosphere, continuing into the Dylkan-esque “Love is Melancholy, But It’s All We’ve Got.” There’s no way around it - while other bearded folk groups are already falling off the radar, Vandaveer has the potential to take over that niche - they have the heart and the balls. - Whitney Patterson

arts music & activities reviews Sia This is Acting RCA I was driving home from class a couple of years ago and heard Sia’s “Chandelier” at full volume for the first time. That song hit me so hard, I’m surprised I didn’t burst through the roof of my car and try to fly the rest of the way home. No, Sia’s music isn’t quite in line with what I would normally prefer. Still, there’s no denying that song’s power. When she belted out her vocals so hard that her voice started to crack, it was like she ripped directly into my soul. I didn’t just hear her voice; I could feel her voice. I decided to look her up, and was surprised to find that Sia has been around for a while. She has a lot of quality material in her library that greatly varies in sound from album to album, and with fairly decent results. Some of her catchier stuff could be compared to Cindy Lauper. That, along with such a uniquely powerful voice, makes me wonder why she floated below the radar for so long. This Is Acting does break the trend of change, however, sticking with a sound similar to 2014’s 1000 Forms of Fear. I don’t see this as a bad thing. In fact, this new album sounds like a continuation of the last, rather than a rehash. As far as radio hits, there are a couple of songs that could be called “Chandelier part 2” which could certainly help propel the album to a very fickle public that just wants the new hit single; I mean, who has time for a fully realized, artistic vision these days, right?(Sadness) This Is Acting is another solid album from a very talented artist that actually deserves the praise and success that has finally come her way. -J. Robert Lobeck

Kanye West The Life of Pablo GOOD, Def Jam Critiquing Kanye West is a difficult thing. He’s not someone that typically receives average reviews - people either love him or hate him. The Life of Pablo, however, might be Mr. West’s first average album. It doesn’t feel radical like Yeezus or intimate and personal like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye’s seventh album feels more like a run of the mill hip hop album, but it’s still a great hip hop album. Even Kanye’s weakest effort still yields amazing moments. The production is top-notch and some songs absolutely rank among his best work. The standout moments are speckled throughout. “Real Friends” is my favorite song on the album and possibly the most sincere. “No More Parties in LA” (which was almost left off the album) is another highlight. The album has good variation and deserves a listen from fans of all music. Even if you hate the man, his music is clearly some of the most important in the industry. - Russell Finn
