EDITOR W A QUICK NOTE FROM THE

ell, we're down to the last few weeks of summer. It's been one of the wettest on record and the seemingly constant rain has wreaked havoc on a number of big community events, especially over the last month or so (the Vanderburgh County Fair is a prime example). For further evidence of just how much water has been dumped on us, take a look at all of the overgrown, green yards out there. Let's just say it's a great time to be in the lawn care business. Now, moving on... September is typically one of the busiest months of the year for benefits, concerts and festivals as organizers take advantage of the "nice" weather (ideally) before the inevitable chill of fall/winter sets in. So get ready for a whole slew of marquee events. Annual favorites like ParksFest and Race for the Cure are back along with Animalpalooza and the Ferdinand Folk Festival. On Franklin Street, you can check out the inaugural Eville Shindig and Paw Crawl, while downtown Evansville has all sorts of entertainment on tap, including the hugely popular Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival on Main Street. Indoors, you can catch the "Make America Rock Again Tour," "I Love the '90s Tour" and WWE Live! at the Ford Center or head over to the Victory a block away for opening night of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra's new season as well as country music star Josh Turner, the Water for People benefit concert and the Irish Dance phenomenon, Rockin' Road to Dublin. A lengthy nap may well be in order after all that, especially since October looks to be just as busy. Rest up! - TE

MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

MONTE SKELTON

This year's Jazz & Wine Festival features a fantastic lineup of the area's best jazz bands, and one of the real highlights will be a performance by Team Skelton, led by 2016 Musician of the Year, Monte Skelton. A fixture on the local music scene, the hyper-talented multi-instrumentalist plays regularly at popular establishments such as Kanpai as well as festivals and benefits of all kinds. Skelton's skills on the saxophone are especially sublime and have made him a magnet for other local jazz greats. In other words, he's a musician's musician. Skelton has played in a number of band configurations, but he's now assembled a real powerhouse of a group known as Team Skelton featuring the Man of the Hour on sax, EWI and bass, plus: Shelly Skelton - vocals Justin Purdy- saxophone Bryce Klueh- bass Eli Green- drums Jordan Green- guitar Andy Fulton - keyboard Seven members strong, Team Skelton has evolved over time from the original Montourage that formed over 10 years ago. According to Skelton, he wanted more "sweetness," including more horns and dynamic vocals. The band's shows are high energy and versatile with a sound that appeals to all ages. For more info on Team Skelton, follow them on Facebook. Photo By: Alex Morgan Imaging

TURNS 20! S P E C I A L

F E A T U R E

I N T E R V I E W

Last man standing: Guitarist Wayne Swinny on surviving two decades of hard rock and hard partying

T

is starting out (laughs). It's a bunch of southern boys hanging out together for two months. I was actually lying in my bunk last night wondering if we'll make it to the end of the tour (laughs). Because if it's like this every night, I'm going to have to start drinking more Gatorade.

Saliva released Love, Lies & Therapy in June, a heavy collection of songs primarily written by Amaru that harkens back to the band's classic era but also adds industrial elements to the mix as well as a more modern rock sheen.

One of the highlights of the new album is an unexpected cover of Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us" - which the band totally pulls off. I've been wanting to do that song for a long time. It's been one of those things that's been in Bobby's head - he knew it would be a good cover. We tried to do it on the last record, but we had too many songs and didn't get around to it. For this record, we just put it on the track list from the beginning. I really have to give Bobby credit, because he was the brainchild behind that one, and he knocked it out of the park. It's melodic but aggressive, too. And sadly, it's a very topical song right now with all the violence that's going on. It's as close to Saliva being socially aware as we'll ever get (laughs).

ime flies, all right. Platinum rockers Saliva, best known for the rap-rock anthem, "Click Click Boom," formed way back in 1996 - which really doesn't seem that long ago. For a good decade or so, the band repeatedly hit the charts with aggressive songs such as "Your Disease" and "Ladies and Gentlemen" and emotional ballads like "Always." Lead singer Josey Scott eventually left for a solo career while other members came and went. But guitarist Wayne Swinny stuck it out, a true rock and roll warrior. No one - especially Swinny - expected him to be the last man standing. But now with a great group of "younger" musicians surrounding him and a powerful lead singer/songwriter in Bobby Amaru fronting a reinvigorated Saliva, he considers himself "one of the luckiest guys in the world."

Currently on tour with Trapt, Swinny and the rest of Saliva are indeed very lucky. Halfway through our interview, the band's tour bus caught on fire but everyone escaped unharmed. In truth, it was just a generator over-heating, and no one was ever in any danger. But it sure made for a great Spinal Tap moment that Swinny, in particular, found very amusing - and perfectly-timed. Saliva was always known as a hard partying band in the old days. Does that still hold true? Our tour manager had to drag me off the San Diego bus last night about 20 minutes late for bus call, so that should tell you how this tour

Another highlight is the epic closing track, "Hand in Hand." I love that song. Actually, I think that was the last track that we got together for the record. Bobby went to Nashville and was working on the song with a friend of his. He came back and said, 'Hey, I've got

this song' and literally, I was blown away when he played it. It's deep - even though we try not to get too deep since we really are just a crazy, loud rock band. But I think Bobby did a great job taking that song to a different place musically and lyrically. Saliva turned 20 this year, and you're the sole original member left. How did you outlast everyone? That's a great question (laughs). To be honest, I'm not really sure if there's any one answer. It's weird, because I know that none of the original five guys that were sitting in that basement practice room all those years ago expected me to be the last guy standing. In my early days of music, I was always the youngest guy - I spent my first 10 years in bands as "the kid." But as time moved on, I became more the same age as everybody and now I'm the older guy in the band. So, I'm sure everybody thought that I was going to either quit or die, but no, here I am 20 years later (laughs). It's inexplicable, except for the fact that early in life I painted myself into a corner on purpose. I had every opportunity to go to college - my mom offered to put me through at least a couple of years. I signed up three years in a row and never got as far as going and buying my books. Music has been less a wise business choice on my part and more luck of the Irish but mostly lack of options. When you're short on options and you've got to make it work, that sharpens your focus a little more. I think I can speak for all of the original guys in Saliva when I say that none of us came from any money. Those early years when we finally started receiving decentsize checks in our bank account, we were like, 'woo-hoo' - we put both fists in the air and started spending it like there was no tomorrow. All of that money is now long gone - we're just working and doing what we love. But I consider myself one of the luckiest guys in the world. So, really, there's no backup plan. Do you at least have your hands insured? It's crazy that you mention that, because I remember back when I was I kid a story about David Lee Roth having a million dollar paternity suit insurance policy with Lloyd's of London - which I thought was hilarious - but I think it was real. Of course, it's a whole different world for rock bands now - it's still crazy but not near as crazy as back then. To answer your question, I never thought about insuring my hands, but I can say this: if there's a brawl, you will not see me throwing fists; I'm throwing elbows, feet, rocks - anything I can pick up - but these hands ain't punching nobody. I've punched enough walls in my time that my hands look they've been beat with a hammer (laughs). But knock on wood, so far there have been no broken bones. FERDINAND

FOLK

FESTIVAL FERDINAND, IN • SEPTEMBER 17

Headliner Rich Robinson talks Flux, comparisons to his brother and becoming more than a curiosity

F

or the last six years, the little town of Ferdinand, IN has staged one of the biggest regional gatherings of (mostly) acoustic performers, featuring some of the most talented guitarists, banjo pickers and fiddlers around. The annual day-long folk festival celebrates the old school approach to musicmaking, offering a welcome alternative to today's digital world of computerized beats and faceless stars. In short, it's all about the human touch - real musicians on stage playing live, speaking through their instruments.

This year's lineup is typically amazing with such venerable acts as Buffalo Killers, Jonathan Tyler, Jefferson Street Parade Band and the much-anticipated headliner, former Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson. The 47-year-old Atlanta native recently released Flux, a masterful new solo album that proves he's moved well out of the shadow of his older brother. Currently on the road for a long stretch, he's winning over crowds with an intriguing mix of southern rock, folk, blues and psychedelia. Were you familiar with the Ferdinand Folk Festival before you signed on? No, I wasn't familiar with it. Someone had told me about it, and it looked like a really cool thing. And so after I read about it a bit, I was like, 'wow, it's cool to keep that tradition going.' You've stated that for the new album Flux, you essentially walked into the studio with no material. That sounds vaguely terrifying. When I say that I didn't have anything, I mean that I didn't have any songs; but I had about 60 parts. A lot of times in the past, I would go into the studio with more solid songs - I would know that I had 10 songs or whatever. But when I went in this time, there were maybe just a couple that were done, but for the most part, there were just some parts and we really used the studio to finish that. To me, it's never terrifying - it's always cool. It's almost like a problem that should be solved - a puzzle that can be put together. As you flesh these ideas out, to me that's such an exciting process. That's what I actually love to do. For

10 |

September 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

the whole of my career, I've never been a pre-production kind of guy. We've never spent too much time fleshing things out [ahead of time], because the studio is so exciting and the energy that comes with getting in there is what makes it. What really stands out is the warmth of the album - it has a wonderfully natural sound. Ultimately, you go into the studio with some good gear or great gear with a band who knows how to play, and it's going to sound that way. We just throw a couple of mics on some amps and throw some mics on the drums and that's pretty much it. It's human. Ultimately, we're not quantizing the beats - we're not trying to make anything perfect. The uniqueness of who we are as individuals and how we play as a band is interesting to me. It's the same thing that's interesting to me about Neil Young or Bob Dylan or The Stones or The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or any band that I grew up listening to. It's the uniqueness of them that has always drawn me to them instead of trying to sound the same as everyone else - which seems to be the phenomenon that's happening right now. Through technology, you literally can sound like anyone else - and people want to which is the weirdest thing in the world to me. Judging by the set lists over the last month or so, "Shipwreck" seems to be a favorite of yours off the new album. Well, it's just a good song to open with. We change the set every night, but I try to have almost a template for where it's going to go. Certain kinds of songs are going to open the show and then the middle will go somewhere else. "Shipwreck" is great to start out with because it can really get us in a zone and we play it really well. It's a good springboard that sets us off. We've pretty much played every song off the new album now - it's good to file through it. And we're also playing stuff off the other records which is really cool as well. We introduce them little by little - we'll bring some stuff in here and there. There's also some covers that we're doing. We did a really great version of "Bluebird"

last night which is a Buffalo Springfield song. And we've been playing "Jigsaw Puzzle" by the Stones a lot - it's been really cool, and I'm really happy with how the show is developing. Your vocals are much more understated than your brother's famously wild delivery. Did it take time to develop your singing style? No, this is just how I've always sung. The only problem with any vocals I've ever done is that I'm constantly compared to my brother - and I'm not my brother. I've never tried to sing like him. So if you took me as just a stranger and had no idea what my past was, there would never be an issue. It'd just be, like, 'wow, that's cool - he sings this way.' My brother's a phenomenal singer - he's great and good for him. But this is what I'm doing and this is how I sing. For me, the song as a whole has always been more important that the voice. It's never been about the singer. We [the band] were watching Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii last night and were commenting on how well their voices meshed with that music. It's just yet another instrument - it's not a traditional frontman out there. I think if people can get past that hang-up, it would be good for me and good for them. And it's not that people aren't enjoying it, but I think there's a contextual thing to it where they come and hear the guitar and then see me singing - and they want to hear something else, a different voice. With that in mind, do you feel like people are now coming to see you and hear your music - rather than out of curiosity because of your Black Crowes legacy? I feel like it's changed with this record. The shows that we've been playing are full of people that want to hear my songs - my solo songs. And that's a really cool feeling. I think the fans that are showing up have a lot more enthusiasm for what we're doing other than just a passing curiosity. *Editor's note: Robinson is also a very accomplished artist. PARKSFEST Garvin Park / September 10

Third annual free music festival promises another full day of family fun and community spirit

I

t didn't take long for ParksFest to become a highlight of the tri-state's event schedule. When the free music festival created by Alex Mourer, Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Development at Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville, debuted in 2014, it drew over 4,000 people - all ages and all backgrounds - to Garvin Park for a day-long celebration of our community. A number of great local and regional bands played to a spirited audience, art and food vendors lined the park along with children's workshops and a beer garden catered to the 21 and over crowd. Long story short, ParksFest was a hit with everyone right out of the gate.

ParksFest Live Music Lineup

Last year's much-anticipated encore doubled the inaugural event's impressive attendance and featured Shooter Jennings, son of the late country star Waylon Jennings. Once again, Garvin Park was packed with festival-goers of all ages from all over the tri-state - a true community gathering. The third annual ParksFest promises to be every bit as fun with something for everyone and, of course, amazing live music, featuring:

Houndmouth Formed in New Albany, IN. After playing locally, they performed at the SXSW music festival in March 2012 and shortly after, were offered a contract with Rough Trade. Their latest album is Little Neon Limelight, released in 2015.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band Bridges genres and eras with an intensity that few contemporary artists possess. Their new album So Delicious elevates the trio’s work to a new level with a very diverse collection of songs featuring the Rev.’s supercharged six-string virtuosity inspired by his Delta blues heroes.

Madisen Ward & The Mama Bear Are a modern soulful/folk music duo from Independence, MO. The band's debut album, Skeleton Crew, captures the mother-and-son team in their most natural setting. They recorded most of the tracks live, sitting across from one another in the recording studio.

The 23 String Band Plays fun, fuel-injected, original Americana that dangerously weaves across the lanes of modern acoustic music. It’s a bluegrass attack fueled by high-octane rock-n-roll energy and triple-distilled old-timey roots. Parksfest runs from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. For more info, visit parksfestevansville.com. Garvin Park is located at 1600 N. Main St. in Evansville.

TOUR!

FORD CENTER • SEPTEMBER 22 Nostalgia never sounded so good: Iconic artists unite to turn back the clock, recreate party vibe

I

t was only a matter of time. For the last several years, the music of the '90s - from slick R&B to feel-good rap - has been making its way back in a big way. Considering the current state of the world and the many frustrations that people are feeling here on the home front, the timing couldn't be better. It seems we could all use a stress-free night of nostalgia, and that's exactly what the "I Love the '90s Tour" is all about. The high-energy show features the biggest stars of the era - Vanilla Ice, SaltN-Pepa, Color Me Badd, Coolio, Tone Loc and Rob Base - and plays out like a non-stop, hit-packed party. Come decked out in your finest '90s gear (lots of bright colors, of course) and get ready to dance the night away. Color Me Badd singer Mark Calderon kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the tour stop in Evansville. Were you friendly with most of these '90s acts back in the day? Yeah, we ran into a few of them back in the day. We got a chance to do a few shows with some of them, but some of the acts on this current tour we met for the first time - like Tone Loc. As we were coming up, he already had his big songs on MTV. It's been so great to meet people like him, because that's who we were listening to at the time. Your debut album - which featured huge hits like "I Wanna Sex You Up," "I Adore Mi Amor" and "All 4 Love" - turned 25 this year. Does that seem possible? I'll say this: It's crazy how fast it all happened. Where did all that time go? Like, today, I've got to take my daughter to college for her senior year - it's crazy, but life has been really good for us. We're healthy, we made it, and we get to do it all over again.

16 |

September 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

How did you handle the sudden fame and everything that came with it? We were young, and it was very confusing. There was a lot of pressure - we always had to look great and sing great. We were meeting all the superstars that we'd always looked up to like Mariah Carey and James Brown. We were out on tour with Paula Abdul, and it was intimidating at times. We wanted to go out and be by ourselves, but we couldn't - that was hard to get used to. I tried going out on my own one time - I was like, 'screw the security guard, I want to feel normal.' And I got in trouble, because three guys wanted to kick my ass at the mall (laughs). True story. So, I shut all that down. But it was also a total blast. You're out on the road, you don't know what day it is, and you're constantly laughing. And of course, you can't forget about the most important part: the girls. Legend has it that Jon Bon Jovi "discovered" Color Me Badd in a mall. What's the real story? Well, we could just strike up a tune anywhere at any time. And that's how we got Jon Bon Jovi's attention. We stopped him as he was coming out of the movie theater in the mall. It was really late at night - we knew he was there with [Bon Jovi guitarist] Richie Sambora. They were doing a concert the following evening in Oklahoma City. As they were coming out of the theater, we just asked if we could sing him a song. He had this beautiful blonde chick on his arm and was like, 'don't you just have a tape on you or something?' But we begged him to let us sing. And once we did, it took him aback. He was like, 'whoa - you guys have got to open up for us tomorrow night.' And that's exactly what we did. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

Beloved sixties-era icons banding together in the name of charity, raising awareness of WFP efforts

lean water is something that most of us take for granted. And yet, with all the advancements of the modern world, a staggering number of people - primarily in poor countries - live without it, resulting in thousands of deaths daily from water-borne diseases. A nonprofit organization founded in 1991, Water for People (WFP) works to create a new normal, a world where everyone has access to clean, safe water, adequate sanitation facilities and basic health services. The key to achieving long-term solutions to these serious issues is education and empowerment of the millions of people living in such unhealthy conditions. But it takes money to make a difference, and WFP needs your support. For the 11th year running, a benefit concert will be held in Evansville to help WFP continue its noble efforts. The annual event keeps growing in popularity with shows selling out well in advance - and for good reason. Some of the biggest stars of the sixties have graced the Victory stage for this charity, and this year's lineup features two beloved icons of that unforgettable musical era: The Lovin' Spoonful ("Do You Believe in Magic," "Daydream" and "Summer in the City") and former teen idol Lou Christie ("The Gypsy Cried," "Rhapsody in the Rain" and "Lightning Strikes"). Let's make this concert the most successful one yet - get your ticket soon! The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com.

Battle against breast cancer continues with annual 5K run/walk for all ages and fitness levels The statistics are quite sobering:

One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Every minute, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer.

M

ost significantly, breast cancer does not discriminate. It can strike anyone at any time regardless of age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location. And that's why the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is such an important event in the effort to fight such a devastating disease. Each year, 25% of the money raised goes to research while 75% stays local to pay for breast health programs - all of which helps to further the cause. According to the Komen Evansville website, in 1980, the 5-year survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74%. Today, that number is 99%! You don't need to be a mathematician to figure out what a difference Race for the Cure and other Komen events have made in the lives of women all over the world. With all that in mind, it's more important than ever to support this life-affirming event, to keep moving forward in the fight against breast cancer.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GET INVOLVED AND MAKE A CONTRIBUTION: • Run or walk a 5K with your family and friends • Start a team • Fundraise • Become a sponsor of Race for the Cure

Up, up and away: Evansville's annual celebration of diversity has ballooned into a huge community gathering

A

few years ago, La Campirana Mexican Grill & Juice Bar coowner Abraham Brown was looking for a way to bring the local Latino population together. His solution was to host a free, day-long celebration of our community's diversity in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15). With Wesselman Park chosen as the venue, Brown forged ahead, organizing the event almost singlehandedly. But little could he have known just what an amazing response the inaugural Fiesta Evansville would receive and how quickly it would grow. Three years later, Brown now has a big planning committee with help from the mayor's office, the African American Museum and Old National Bank among others. Most impressively, 128 agencies and businesses will be participating on October 9 along with 20 different countries represented at the various cultural booths, showcasing the many colorful aspects of their homelands - as well as their tasty dishes. "If you've ever wondered what it's like to eat Peruvian food, it's going to be available - Columbian, Venezuelan and so much more," Brown says. Last year's Fiesta Evansville drew over 3,000 people. It was such a huge gathering that Mayor Winnecke suggested using the entirety of the park for the 2016 celebration - and that's exactly what Brown intends to do. "Wesselman Nature Center is partnering with us and will be offering reduced rates," he says. "And we'll have soccer games with different

representatives from each country, a volleyball tourney and bicycle races for the kids. We want to make sure we use all the resources that the park has to offer." Of all the new additions to this year's event, Brown is most excited about bringing in a hot air balloon, meant to be both a symbol of, and a fundraiser for, the Latino struggle for higher education. "A lot of Latinos are not eligible for good scholarships, so we want to provide a fund for that," he explains. "So part of the theme of the hot air balloon ride is 'Bring Latino education to a higher level.' All proceeds from it will be going 100% to that purpose. Next year we want to fill up the whole place with hot air balloons to make the event more colorful - we'll have rides to the river and back to the park." Clearly, the sky is the limit for Fiesta Evansville. In fact, according to Brown, it's getting so big that the Indian community here has asked to be invited as a guest. "They brought up a good idea: Every year we invite another cultural group to the event, because we have so many people from different areas of the world that have made their home here." Fiesta Evansville runs from noon - 5 p.m. For more info, follow FE on Facebook.

West side bars and businesses joining together for day of giveaways to benefit area animal shelters

ast year's inaugural Paw Crawl was a bit of a trial run, according to Warrick Humane Society Executive Director, Lindsey Byers. The event, which benefits both the WHS and Warrick Animal Guardians, drew close to 150 people who visited participating local establishments throughout the day and vied for exciting giveaways at each location. While attendance was perhaps a little lighter than organizers hoped, one very important change has been made for the second go-around of Paw Crawl that should help boost interest. "Last year, the event started at Carson's Brewery and then everyone had to come out to Franklin Street," Byers explains. "A lot of people didn't want to have a beer and then drive all the way over there. This year, the event will start and end at Piston's Bar & Grill, so everything will take place in the same general area. Carson's is still involved, though. They will have a special brew at each participating location."

In addition to Piston's and Carson's, participants this year include Franklin Street Pizza Factory, Franklin Street Tavern, Leroy's, Gerst Haus, Smitty's, Sportsman's and Lamasco plus businesses like Healthy Habits of Evansville (giving away a free hour-long massage) and Bella Vi Medspa. Each bar/ business will donate a $25 or more item. Starting at 1 p.m., people will visit a new location every 30 minutes where they can win a special giveaway. It's a win for the bars and businesses as well due to the increased traffic they'll see - especially considering that some people coming to Paw Crawl may not have patronized these establishments before.

Visit all participating locations and get your card stamped, and be entered to win a prize at the end at Piston's!

As noted above, Paw Crawl benefits both the WHS and Warrick Animal Guardians. WAG, based in Boonville, works closely with Warrick County Animal Control. As Byers explains, "Warrick County Animal Control has zero funding for the medical care of animals - so [WAG Director] Danielle Barnes

HISTORIC NEWBURGH

GHOST WALKS OCTOBER 14-16

Spooky Newburgh tradition full of strange tales from over 200 years of eerie twists and turns

G

host Walks feature stories rooted in history and are gleaned from old newspaper articles and family legends. There may be a few embellishments, but for the most part, the stories are all true!

Every year, we have people share new stories of things that give you pause. Many people come year after year just to hear their favorite story. While many of the stories stay the same, other stories are added from year to year. The 23rd annual Historic Newburgh Ghost Walks will run Friday, October 14th, 6:00pm-9pm; Saturday, October 15th, 5pm-9pm; and Sunday, October 16th, 5pm-8:00pm. The guided walking tours depart Preservation Hall (200 State Street) and each tour lasts about an hour. Tour guides take groups of 18-20 out for the walking tour every 12 minutes. It's not a “haunted house” type of tour where people or things jump out and scare you. We believe that history has its own eerie twists and turns. As you walk along the sidewalk, meet Ghosts of Newburgh’s past, who will share their tragic life; as well as, stories of life in Newburgh. There are two tours to choose from. Many will do one tour one year then the other tour the next year. Others will do one tour, go to dinner and then walk back to Preservation Hall for the other tour. On the Water Street tour, attendees will learn of river lore and some of our family mysteries. The State Street tour focuses on Civil War tales and the homes along State Street and East Jennings. Both tours offer their share of history, Newburgh style. Advance tickets are on sale now for $8. Advance ticket sales close at 5pm Thursday, October 13.Tickets are $10 at the door. This is a great outing for groups! You may purchase tickets by calling Historic Newburgh, Inc. at (812) 853-2815 or going to our website of historicnewburgh.org to purchase your tickets on-line. After the tours, volunteers will offer hot cider and an opportunity to buy a Got Ghosts t-shirt. It's fun for the entire family. Come early and shop, dine and enjoy Newburgh. - Carol Schaefer

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT

3500 Villa Pt, Owensboro, KY • 270-686-7505

I

f you're looking for lighter Mexican cuisine that still packs the same spice and flavor, look no further than Salsarita's Fresh Cantina located just off of Highway 54 in Owensboro. After opening their first location in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2000, they now boast over 80 locations and are still growing (coming soon to Morgan Avenue in Evansville), so it's apparent that they're doing something right. Fast and casual at a reasonable price with recipes made in-house daily, they provide a quick, comfortable experience that allows guests to craft their own dish. First you choose your entree, ranging from burritos, bowls, quesadillas, salads, nachos, or a Quesorito, which is a burrito smothered in their creamy queso. Protein choices include grilled chicken, marinated steak, pork, shrimp, ground beef, and veggies. Then choose your toppings, from different salsas to rice, beans, sour cream, cheese, and much more. But here's the best part, in my opinion - all entrees come with complimentary hand-mashed fresh guacamole. For

smaller appetites, Salsarita's offers scaled-down burritos, bowls, and quesadillas. Tacos come individually or as a combo that includes two with their "wildly addictive" tortilla chips, salsa, and a fountain drink. For kiddos, a quesadilla or taco comes with chips, a drink, and a poquito (a dessert dough ball rolled in cinnamon and sugar). Snacks and sides are also offered, in case you're just there to enjoy a beer or margarita and take in some live music on the patio. To give back to the community, Salsarita's utilizes resources and volunteers for The Caring Cantina, a program created to combat homelessness and foster outreach and hospitality for community families, donating time and food while partnering with individuals and organizations to fundraise for local non-profits and schools. For more information on the program, and to book catering for parties or events, visit salsaritas.com. But let the food speak for itself when you "Taste the Fresh Cantina difference." - Whitney Patterson

Hours: Mon-Sat 11 a.m.-10 p.m./ Sun 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

MIKE WHEELER States of exhaustion: Transient lifestyle losing its luster for one of Owensboro's busiest musicians

O

ver just a four month stretch during the past year, bluegrass/Americana musician Mike Wheeler played so many shows in so many different parts of the country that he actually began thinking about scaling things back - something the relatively new Owensboro resident previously never considered. "I don't know if it had anything to do with turning 30," he says. "But all of a sudden I've found myself not as psyched to wake up on a couch." However, Wheeler is excited about engineering a bit of a "restart" and following up on a number of projects that have been in the works for awhile. The fact that this very talented singer/songwriter plans to call Western KY home or at least his home base - for the time being is great news for the regional scene. Growing up in Vermont, Wheeler was drawn to the musical freedom of jam bands like the Grateful Dead. He formed a similarly-styled group with high school friends that carried on past his college years, but the influence of his acoustic guitar-playing Uncle Bob began to steer things in a new direction. "He's a huge fan of the Dead as well, but he also loves the Flying Burrito Brothers, Neil Young - a whole range of country and bluegrass," Wheeler explains. "We would get together and pick some tunes, and I also started playing in a little string band with some of my buddies." Eventually leaving both Vermont and the electric guitar behind, Wheeler headed down south to Georgia to pursue music full-time. Those early days of traveling from place to place were often very satisfying, even when the money wasn't. "You're out on the road, and it's just euphoria, because you think about people sitting at their desks and there are palm trees in the middle of February," he says. "But it's a roller coaster. Sometimes you get paid great to play for no one and other times you're in front of a huge crowd, and it's just for exposure."

After two years in Georgia, Wheeler headed to Key West, FL for a few months of gigging, eventually making his way to Nashville for a recording session. Slowly, he was building a catalog of acoustic solo material that reflected the dark side of Americana music. He was also connecting and collaborating with other like-minded musicians - the results of which are now taking shape. In fact, 2016 and beyond will see a co-written album produced with Illinois songwriter, John Hvezda, as well as a muchanticipated release with honky-tonk string band, Red Valley Flyers, and a side project with Wheeler's buddy George Jackson from New Zealand. The latter looks to be a full-on "bells and whistles" recording with drums, guitars, fiddles and banjos. But first, Wheeler is eager to get at least an EP of some raw, self-penned acoustic tracks out in the world. His new website showcases several strong contenders, including "Strong Maria," "Sleep Alone" and "Open Heart." Still, Wheeler is at his best on stage. Live highlights include performances at Maverick Americana Music Festival (UK), Aiken Bluegrass Festival, IBMA Bluegrass Ramble, California Bluegrass Association Father's Day Festival and Steel Bridge Songfest. And many of you probably caught his set at ROMP and the new IBMM groundbreaking this summer. No wonder Wheeler's ready to settle down for a bit - as much as that's possible.

Upcoming Shows : 9/10 Craft Rails & Brewery - Seymour, IN 9/17 Harvest Festival - Nashville, TN 10/7 CYO Brewing - Owensboro, KY For more info, visit mike-wheeler.net and follow him on Facebook.

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY COMMUNITY & FAMILY

FINISH THE SENTENCE WITH

GRANT SHORT FATHER | MUSICIAN | POLITICIAN SKATEBOARDER & MORE

Owensboro's Grant Short is a busy guy, all right. Every day is full-on between taking care of his kids, developing his musical project, Classy Mongrel, and furthering his political aspirations. And yet, he still found time to participate in a fun little exercise designed to expose his deepest, darkest secrets. Actually, it's all pretty harmless stuff. Maybe next time...

As a child I wanted to be... a pilot when I grew up, but as a teenager, I started becoming interested in a music career. I ended up doing both as an adult.

in the Navy and a fighter pilot in the Pacific Campaign in WWII. He also abandoned his own family at 14 so his sister and mother could have enough to eat. He taught me more than I will ever know.

My favorite eatery in Owensboro... is Dee's Diner. They have the most killer breakfast on Earth, free daily kids meals, and the best staff you could ask for. Plus, it's locally-owned.

If I could live anywhere in the world... it would be Colorado. I've spent a lot of time there as a climber and a backpacker. I love the wilds there and the people just as much. Everyone is incredibly active. It's refreshing.

My hidden talent... (though some close friends know) is an uncanny ability to operate heavy machinery under extreme conditions. No clue where it comes from other than fearlessness.

My desert island album... would have to be Ryan Adams & The Cardinals' Cold Roses. Their best work in my humble opinion. I saw that arrangement of the group live, after which I played Galaga with Ryan Adams. So many memories and favorite tunes. My pet political issue... is anything hypocritical. Which usually has me criticizing conservatives (but not always). For example, conservatives want small government, but want to regulate women's bodies and implement religious teachings in public school. Creepy and hypocritical.

My favorite superhero... is Batman. He's the perfect mix of fearlessness, cunning, and ruthlessness that I think surviving the modern era is crucial to have. So, he's a great superhero to identify with.

My biggest real-life hero... is my Grandfather Cliff. He was a Lt. Col.

One thing or person that inspires me daily... is my kids. There is nothing better to draw positive energy from to better yourself than kids. Like Voldemort.

For my last meal I would choose... chicken rings, vegetables, and a roll from my summer camp in east KY as a kid, Cathedral Domain.

NEWS4U | SPORTS

WITH BILLY EGELER Racing season may be winding down, but there's plenty of awesome action in store for September

T

his month features the largest annual NHRA Drag Racing event of the Midwest, the US Nationals. A ton of spectators will make the trek to Indy as well as a number of area racers including Evansville's JB Strassweg and Don O'Neal, Central City, KY's Lynn and Madison Ellison and many more! Not only will this weekend of racing feature a Divisional meet for the Division 3 racers, but the cars and stars of the Pro ranks will be in action. This is one event that has long been on my bucket list. I hope to be able to make it up there soon and you should too. Kentucky Motor Speedway in Whitesville, KY will host the USAC Midwest Midgets this month as well as some other marquee events. This will be the first time the open wheel cars have been to the historic track since the mid 70's. It's sure to be an awesome show. Visit kentuckymotorspeedway.us/ for dates and ticket information. Windy Hollow Speedway is still going strong as they utilize their limited schedule which is being implemented by the city/state. Huge crowds and great car counts have been seen throughout the season. This month should be no different as there are a couple of large shows on tap. For a track that opened in 1965, this place still attracts crowds like no other in the area. There's always action on and off the track. Check their Facebook page out for more details on upcoming events. Rockport Raceway is a shining star in the area for Go Kart racers. Since James Wettstain and family have taken the track over this season, there's

66 |

September 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

been nothing but praise! The crew has put countless hours into providing fast, fair and fun racing for the family. James, a former street stock and late model driver, has stepped the game up and is using some of the ideas he saw when he was on tour around the region and it's proving to work. Kart counts continue to increase almost weekly and the shows are being run efficiently. You should make it a point to stop in for one of their Saturday night shows. It's worth your time and very reasonably priced. Check them out on Facebook for their schedule. Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, KY recently hosted the annual Hope For Harlie benefit race. This event has become well known in the area because of the cause. Harlie Bryant of Ohio County, KY is 10 years old and has been fighting a rare form of Brain cancer for the past several years. 108 cars turned out to race and a hillside full of people to help raise money for Harlie and enjoy some great racing. After mother nature put a delay in the start of the action, things went very well as over $6,000 was raised for this youngster. Again, this is a great testament showing how the racing family responds when someone is in need. Racing continues every Saturday night at the Ridge. Like their Facebook page for updates!

NEWS4U | SPORTS Western Kentucky Speedway in Nebo, KY is once again under new management. Brett Thurmond has stepped up and leased the track to keep it from closing. Brett, a long time sponsor of cars and the track, has already shown he wants to help keep not only the track alive but the sport as well. When he heard about the Hope for Harlie Benefit at Cedar Ridge, Brett decided to close for that night in an effort to support Harlie and allow racers the opportunity to support the event. After Mother Nature washed out the race night, Thurmond once again stepped up the following week and took the night off. Thurmond has also expressed interest in working with all the local tracks to attempt to get rules unified. This is something our sport needs more than anything. Every promoter needs to step back and quit thinking they are the king. If tracks work together, It will be better for everyone in our area! Check WKS out on Facebook for information and upcoming events. Greater Evansville Dragway is up and going with Friday night action for the young crowd. The main focus is to provide a safe place for the youngsters to come run their cars/ trucks instead of street racing. Then on Saturdays they are offering IHRA Drag Racing action which has seen a great deal of support. The amount of upgrades that have taken place during the remodeling project is unreal. If you want to take in the action, it will be well worth your trip. You won't recognize the place! Chandler Speedway has also been a hot spot on Friday nights. Mark Vanwinkle and company have been working hard to bring the track back to life and making improvements as they go. This little 3/8 mile dirt track has hosted their normal weekly events and added in traveling series such as the Indiana Late Model Series, Power I Midwest Midgets, Lightning Sprints, Racesaver 305 Sprints and 410 sprints. All of which have produced some great racing. Check them out by searching Chandler Speedway on the net or like their Facebook page. My buddy Tommy Helfrich and family still have a few more races on the schedule. Mother Nature claimed a couple of events over the past month but things are heating up for September and October at the Class Track. Swing by their webpage and check out the remainder of their schedule. You won't want to miss a single lap of the action on the famed 1/4 mile. As the black flag waves to get me the heck out of here for the month I would like to do something a little different. I want to remember one of the racing world's greats that was lost in August. Bryan Clauson was taken from us after a horrific racing accident at the Bellville Midget Nationals in Belleville, KS. Clauson has made many laps around tracks in Indiana and across the country from NASCAR, Indy Car, Midgets, Non Wing Sprints to World of Outlaw cars. Bryan was a legend before he turned 27. He will always be in our racing family's hearts and minds. He's one of those racers that you couldn't ever forget about. He was a kind and giving person off the track yet one fierce driver once the helmet went on. My prayers are with everyone that was ever touched by Bryan - family, friends,

car owners, fans and crew members. My prayers are also with the driver that was involved in the accident as well as all the people who saw the accident firsthand. This is never something we want to hear about or see. Bryan had a saying he came up with every time he went to victory lane: "Parked It." This phrase is now one of the most used phrases in motorsports without a doubt. A bright glimmer of warmth was felt in everyone's heart during the August running of the Knoxville Nationals. A benefit auction for Bryan's family took place. One item sold was Bryan's favorite helmet. Tony Stewart purchased the helmet for $32,000 and then gave it back to Bryan's girlfriend. By the time the auction was over, Stewart had donated a total of $42,000 to the fund. Then during the actual Knoxville Nationals, a fan had purchased a 50/50 ticket which turned out to be the winning ticket. The winning amount for this fan was $20,000. The fan donated every cent of it back to the Clauson family. This is what our racing family does. Some call us rednecks, some think our sport is awful. This sport may not be for you... but it's for me though! Keep on keepin' on! #PARKEDit

ANGEL

RHODES Deja Blu 5's soulful front woman prepping solo album, plotting two year plan for success

R

oughly five years ago, Angel Rhodes finally found her niche in life. Up until that point, she'd been working crazy hours at an accounts receivable job with no real direction. But then the soon-to-be 33-year-old (more on that later) started singing with the blues-rock band Deja Blu 5 and quickly found herself belting out inspired cover songs and gritty originals on stages all over the tristate. Over time, as demand for the group's unique yet universal sound continued to grow, Rhodes actually began to contemplate a career in music - a path that previously seemed impossible. Then something interesting - and wonderful - happened: DB5's guitarist became the father to a baby girl. Inevitably, this bit of good news meant that the band had to slow things down for a bit. And while Rhodes was totally cool with the situation, she was also determined to keep moving forward. "I wanted to play out more, so I started doing some duo stuff in the meantime as well as solo performances," she says. "It got to the point where I was making more money gigging in two nights than I was for an entire week at work." After much consideration, Rhodes took that proverbial leap of faith and went full-time, booking herself at seemingly every bar and restaurant in the area that offers live acoustic music (she also frequently plays animal benefits and other community fundraisers). How has it gone? She celebrated a year of being "job-free" in June. While escaping the 9-5 grind sounds like a dream, Rhodes is quick to point out just how much work is involved in pursuing a music career. "It's a lot of networking, a lot of marketing and most importantly, persistence - that's why I get gigs," she explains. "You're essentially a small business owner. I research demographics if I'm going to a particular city to play, the radio stations, etc. It's so much more than just writing and singing." With Rhodes in particular, it's about being an entertainer. She

68 |

September 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

loves to "mess with the crowds, joke around and generally be really quirky and weird." But that's just part of her appeal. Unquestionably, Rhodes has one of the most resonant voices around - so full and rich and able to adapt to a seriously wide range of material. "I like to say that you can expect everything from Pink Floyd to Meghan Trainor and everything in between," she says. "I do Led Zeppelin, Incubus, even Lorde. With Deja Blu 5, it's very much a blues and rock thing, but solo is my time to do whatever I want." And that includes changing up the songs, putting her own spin on the arrangements - with one notable exception. "I stick to how Janis Joplin does her songs," Rhodes states with no need for clarification. Having built up a strong fan base between fronting DB5 and performing solo, the next step for Rhodes is to record an album. She's been writing frantically, performing selected songs live and posting some of her recent efforts on YouTube. Ideally, she'll wind up with 10 or so gems and shoot for winter studio time with her producer cousin in Atlanta. Ultimately, Rhodes has a "two-year plan" for success. "First, I want to pay off a bunch of stuff; then I'd like to get an RV and tour. A perfect world would be six months on / six months off. I could still come back and play with the band and keep both things going."

Upcoming Shows in Evansville: 9/7 Sauced (solo) 9/10 Animalpalooza (w/ DB5) 9/17 Unplugged Ale House (solo) 9/23 Roca Bar North (w/DB5) 9/30 Another Chance for Animals fundraiser (solo) *Rhodes will spend her 33rd bday (Oct 30) gigging in Carbondale, IL

Displaced after a devastating fire, well-respected studio owner feels the love from the local music community

I

t's nice to know you're appreciated, and few people know that better than the area's DIY music man, Brett Siler. Founder of Mother Brain Sound Infrastructure, an in-house studio where he's recorded "hundreds" of local bands, and co-owner of Rebore Records, an independent label created for the purpose of releasing music by said local bands, the 33-year-old has been put through the wringer this summer. By now, many of you are familiar with the fire that severely damaged several buildings in downtown Evansville on June 24. As luck would have it, Siler's newly-acquired living space on Main Street was located right next to the structure that first went up in flames. "I had been running errands and was literally home for five minutes and started smelling all this smoke," he recalls, still in disbelief. "I ran outside and called 911 right away. The fire wasn't that big at first, but then got crazy within minutes. I tried to run back in and get my cat, but the place was filled with smoke; I couldn't find him and couldn't see." Sadly, Siler and his girlfriend lost their good buddy, Thombus, along with their home (at least until it's deemed habitable again). In addition, expensive recording equipment that Siler purchased over the last decade or more to build up his studio was damaged - much of it beyond repair. It really doesn't seem fair; after all, Mother Brain was his livelihood, a full-time passion project. Initially started with the intent of documenting his own bands, Gratis and

70 |

Stationary Odyssey, the studio quickly became a haven for local bands looking to make a record on the cheap with a good sound. "I kind of fell into recording," Siler says. "The more I did it, the more I became obsessed with it - it's the same as learning an instrument." To up his game, he attended Vincennes University and completed their audio recording program. Ever since, Siler's been helping out virtually anyone who's asked - often for very little pay. In fact, he was in the middle of recording four albums when the fire struck. Again, it all seems so unfair considering how much he's given to the local music community. But this unfortunate situation has shown Siler just how much that community appreciates him. When the smoke had cleared and Siler's predicament became public knowledge, his friends and many acquaintances jumped into action, organizing a benefit show at PG Cafe. A GoFundMe page was also created to help him get back on his feet. While extremely grateful, Siler admits to mixed emotions. "I'm glad they did [those things for me], because it's really helped out," he says. "But it feels weird asking for money from all of my friends that I know aren't rich." That's just the sort of humble response that has endeared Siler to so many musicians and goes a long way in explaining why they've all been so eager to give back in his time of need. The feeling is clearly mutual. "People tell me how important their recording session with me was to them - that it was an important part of their creative evolution. It's a nice reminder that this is stuff that people really care about - it means a lot to them." To donate to Siler's cause, visit gofundme.com/thombus.

STUDIES

SCHOOl'S OUT FOR... EVER? POST GRAD PERSPECTIVE FROM MARISA PATWA

By: John Thurgood

Brian Douglas writes in the introduction to his extensive compendium An Oral History of Falling Down that the term Extreme Sports was a misnomer developed by the marketing team of Hines Ketchup. He elaborates—in excruciating detail—by outlining the rise and fall of a spicy flavored relish, specifically how it gained popularity among a portion of the population that theretofore had never preferred a diced pickle condiment and how that same demographic eventually turned their backs on Hines Industries for good. Though the story behind Spice 'n Dice is wrought with the kind of heartbreak and revenge one might find in a summer blockbuster, the truly interesting facts were almost left out of Douglas's rendition entirely. It wasn't until the fourth edition that Douglas thought it important to include a detailed index of nearly a hundred consumer studies, all of them focusing on Hines Industries' new line of spicy relish. The data reveals that the actual consumer of Hines Spice 'n Dice Relish was between the ages of 16 and 26, and within two days prior to consumption they had either skateboarded, BMXed or in-line skated. In one study, the data shows that to be true for every single consumer who participated. At the time, the Spice 'n Dice studies—as they had come to be known—were ground breaking. An entirely new demographic had been born. Once the news hit, every product that could be tailored to fit that particular age group affected a guise of high energy and risky behavior. In a revised introduction to the fourth edition, Douglas correlates this shift with a study done by Healthcare Data Analytics that shows a massive rise in in-patient medical treatment. Hospitals were being inundated by patients with sprained ankles, cranial contusions and all sorts of dermal laceration damage. In Douglas's final words to the revised introduction to his compendium, he posits that the main problem wasn't that people were falling down more often; it was that when people were falling down, they were simply falling down with more intensity. It was as if the whole population had adopted a devil-may-care attitude toward even the most basic human behavior. He cites that one of the most common reasons for seeing a physician during that time was “injury sustained while eating." “In the end,” Douglas concludes, “We've come to blame Spice 'n Dice for not only misrepresenting the act of falling down, but for ushering an entire population's lack of coordination to the fore.”

For the past 18 years, whenever August rolled around, I knew that my summer of staying up until 4 a.m., laying out at the pool, going to outdoor concerts and eating leftover pizza for breakfast would come to an end and the routine of endless studying and caffeine overload would once again fill my days. Now I find myself going to Walmart not to buy school supplies, but to buy office supplies for my new desk at work. And I should be thrilled right? I no longer have to buy overpriced textbooks or pull an all-nighter cramming for an exam. And I am. I love my new job as a reporter at Warrick Publishing. I get to spend my whole day writing and meeting amazing members of the community. But a part of me is almost a little bit jealous of my friends still in college who are getting ready to start their school year. I kind of wish I was about to start recruitment with my little sorority sister Gisela. The other day I even went online to see what classes UE was offering in the fall. Forensic Science? Watercolor? Feminist Philosophy? Sign me up. I’m actually lucky that even though I usually work the standard 9 to 5, my hours as a reporter are still quite flexible. But I would be lying if I said a part of me didn’t miss rolling out of bed ten minutes before my noon class. But I can’t complain too much because I’m getting paid to do something I love and who knows, maybe I’ll get those masters degrees in Spanish and screenwriting I always wanted one day. So if you’re just starting college or even have a few years left, don’t skip class just because you’re lazy; actually read the books your professors assign you and never take your education for granted. Because eventually, it will all be over and trust me, you’ll miss it. And for anyone else finally out of school and just starting their careers too: enjoy every moment of it because you’re just at the beginning of what will hopefully be an incredible and successful life ahead. At least that’s what my UE professors instilled in me during my senior year and I for one am choosing to believe it.

Tri-State Fashion

NEWS4U | FASHION ADVICE

with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie

Shopping with a purpose: Your purchases can make a big impact on the lives of others Most of us move through the day swiping our credit card for random items, whether it be clothing or groceries, without a real thought as to what we are buying. Believe it or not, it's very important to think beyond the item. Making a purchase just because you really like an item is all well and good, but have you ever thought where that piece was before it landed in your hands or what story it has to tell? Ethical and positive-purpose shopping includes a variety of categories from eco-friendly brands and fair trade goods to brands that impact change in other ways. I interviewed two tri-state ladies who love purchasing with purpose to find out why it's important to them and what it really means. Jill Fisher believes that shopping ethically is very important for our global community. “I feel much better about spending my money knowing that the purchase is improving the lives of others and impacting change,” she says. “I love knowing where my item came from and who made it. I feel a personal connection to them and know that I am helping make an impact.” Gina Videa agrees. “I love that not only are the clothes and accessories helping change our world in a positive way, but they are unique and have a special connection with the humans that made them,” she says. Both ladies agree with research that proves consumers are not well-educated about the importance of ethical shopping. “I think most people focus more on the brand name or cost of an item," Jill explains."They probably have no idea where their item was made or the conditions of the workers. I think most people choose to turn a blind eye." Gina adds, “It is so simple and even fascinating to learn

Featured shirts from a brand that uses proceeds to build orphanages in India about the people that make the items and how one single affordable purchase can do something amazing like provide a month’s worth of clean water to someone. It is easy to get educated, and I wish more people would.” Fisher provides the example of a readily available clothing brand she supports that provides funding for rescue orphanages in India. She loves knowing that her purchases help to provide a home for children used to sleeping in the streets, unsure where their next meal will come from. Both ladies are extremely passionate about, and supportive of, ethical shopping and will continue to make an impact every time they make a purchase. NEWS4U | LOCAL OPINION

ASK THE PASTOR

THE

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

WRITE STUFF

Which religious tradition is the "real one"?

Q:

with Jonathan Gluff

Mark Twain famously said, “Man is the only animal that has the true religion – several of them!” There was a time when everyone assumed that you were a Christian or a Jew or no religious preference. This, of course, was a gross over simplification. Many religious traditions have been present in our country since its founding. Much is often made of the “Judeo-Christian” tradition being the tradition on which our laws are based.

Lady & the Trump

But as time moved forward, and as people from other parts of the world immigrated to the U.S., other religious traditions came with them: Islam, Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism, and many more. Suddenly, the world of the “Judeo-Christian tradition” seemed to be slipping away.

I understand why people may be scared of one major party’s candidate or the other becoming the next president. Again, as I’ve said before I try to keep this as neutral as possible, but I don’t think it’s too crazy to say that both sides do have some very valid arguments against their opponent. So I fully understand why some people think it’s important to vote AGAINST a bad candidate rather than voting FOR a good candidate. However, I also think it’s wrong to criticize someone for not subscribing to that school of thought. I’d like to ask: Why not vote for a third party? And why are those who are considering doing so being labeled as “immature” and “selfish”?

What I have discovered over years of conversation and cooperation is that these various traditions hold far more in common than we may be aware. We are all searching for the answer to who we are, what we have been created to do, how we relate to each other, and how we can work together to make the world a better place. I have been blessed to build friendships and partnerships with people of many different faiths. Through these marvelous people outside of my own tradition, I have gained new understanding of my own faith tradition as well as new respect for their faith tradition. Maybe Twain was right after all. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

I would like to point out here that I understand the concerns from both sides, and I can safely say that I share concerns with both those who are terrified of Trump and those who hate Hillary. So why should we have to settle for just one or the other? Why can’t we demand that we have better options than just two rich narcissists/ sociopaths who are so clearly out of touch with the general public that they make it a big deal to stage themselves doing “everyday things”? It’s no secret that Americans are unhappy with the two-party system. I doubt even the most accurate and in-depth Pew or Gallup polls will find too many people who would say, “Why yes, I would like to limit my choice of candidates to essentially two different platforms, and no more!” We’re a nation of nearly 300 million; clearly there are more nuanced belief systems than just Republican and Democrat. I think I’m bothered most by the claim that a vote for a third party is a vote for Trump. That undeniably has been the case in previous years, but I’ve seen more previous Trump supporters begin backing third party candidates as I have liberal voters. So I honestly feel this assertion has been greatly over-exaggerated. Worst case scenario, though: If a candidate could draw away an equal number of votes from both major candidates, shouldn’t that inspire people to at least question whether a third party presidency is feasible? Clearly, my group of friends is not exactly what could be called a scientifically accurate population sample size. But I feel it’s enough to merit hope… and that is something I have.

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

Trump, Brexit, and Vanderburgh County

A Guide to Being a Model Guest at a Restaurant "Can I get you anything else for right now?" - every server in America Roughly half of Americans eat out at least once a week - busy schedules, meetings with friends, dates, etc. Also, it's sometimes nice to be pampered and not have to lift anything but a fork and not clean up afterward. Of course, when choosing to do so, there are no imaginary forces creating such a splendid experience. There are real humans contributing to your night out, from the host who greeted you to the bartender pouring your drinks, the people slaving away in the hot kitchen, and the dishwashers breaking their backs scraping, rinsing, and scrubbing. Alas, the human with their own life, thoughts, feelings, and emotions that you'll be spending the most time with is your server. I've worked in the restaurant/ bar industry for over 10 years, and I get it, trust me. All of it. I wait tables, I bartend, but I also eat out. Not every experience will be ideal, not every server is superb, people make mistakes and have bad days. If you've never worked in the biz, it may be hard for you to comprehend, but here's a short guide on how to enhance your chances of getting good service: Acknowledge your server as a person. When they greet you and ask how you are doing, put down your damn phone and make eye contact. Respond and reciprocate before barking your drink order. "Pepsi" is not a state of being. We'll get to that. Listen when your server is asking questions or ticking off lists because you refuse to read the menu. We want to take care of you but it's exhausting to repeat yourself six times in three minutes. Be polite - our job requires us to be polite regardless of your attitude, so why not just be cool? Don't throw a fit immediately because something went wrong. Give us a chance to apologize and fix it first. Finally, if you had good service, leave a good tip. That's how we survive. Don't wanna tip? Stay home or get fast food. We did our job, now you do yours. P.S. If you have a legit complaint, address it with your server and/or manager at the restaurant. No one likes a keyboard critic. Signed, Whitney Patterson - a voice for the overwhelmed and underappreciated

In 2012, led by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, proponents of city-county consolidation attempted to change the status quo by consolidating the governments of the city of Evansville and Vanderburgh County into one governing body. This referendum was put to a county-wide vote in the midst of a heated presidential election that saw President Obama win in a near landslide. City-county consolidation was defeated handily by a 2 to 1 margin and the status quo remained. Fast forward four years later and we see a worldwide crusade against the establishment. Donald Trump took his case straight to the American people and won in a primary against 16 opponents, most of whom were seasoned campaigners and politicians. The fact that he was able to win the GOP primary has proven that people are looking for a change. Across the Atlantic, British voters chose to leave the European Union. Brexit reflected the anger of many voters who feel their voices aren't heard and that change is needed. Winnecke called the 2012 vote "surprising" and said proponents of consolidation didn't make a strong enough case. He also said he would like to see the proposal revisited in the future. Mr. Mayor, 2012 was too early. The time to change the status quo is now. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT MEET ROSCOE, JARHEAD & TOAD Roscoe - Roscoe is a 2-year-old male black Lab mix. He and some of his friends were transferred in to VHS from Evansville Animal Care & Control when they were out of space. Since he came there as a stray, no one knows much about his background, but he is a very loving, affectionate dog. He’s a favorite at Cardio for Canines! Roscoe is currently healing from a non-chronic skin condition that makes him look a little rough, but it will heal up soon and is not contagious. He still has some red, scaly patches but he looks so much better! His $100 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and more. He seems to have lived a life without much attention, so he can’t wait to find a forever family that has a big bed with an empty spot just for him! Jarhead -Jarhead is a male orange & white cat. He was brought to VHS as a stray with his head stuck in a peanut butter jar. (Hence the super-creative name.) His skin was raw around the face & neck, he was covered in ticks, and he has tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus.) But he will still live a long and happy life and he can live with cats who don’t have FIV. Now he’s all cleaned up, tick-free, and ready for a forever home! VHS estimates him to be about a year & a half old, so he’s still quite young. Jarhead’s $30 adoption fee will help make a small dent in the cost of his medical care, neuter, microchip, vaccines, and more. He has one condition for his adopters: must provide tons and tons of daily head rubs.

Toad - Toad is a 4-month-old male albino rat. He’s friendly & used to being handled! His brother Yoshi is available too. Rats actually make very loving, intelligent pets. They can be trained to do tricks and are very happy spending time with their families. They can be great starter pets for kids! Toad and Yoshi’s adoption fees are $5 each. Since a rat’s average lifespan is about 2 years, these guys have their whole lives ahead of them!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Emily & Frank West-sider Emily Sumner and her family have adopted several animals from the VHS over the years, including two cats that currently live at home. A couple of months ago, she made another trip to the shelter and met a senior dog named "Nicky" who was featured on this very page in our June issue. The adorable 13-year-old Chihuahua had been dropped off at the VHS along with his two siblings after their owner could no longer afford to care for them. Without a fenced-in yard at home, Emily was looking for a laidback, smaller dog that could be taken out on a leash easily; "Nicky" fit the bill! The little guy may be up there in age, but he's still breaking hearts with that cute face and has some good years ahead now that he's found a forever home - where he's known as "Frank" ("a good old man name"). According to Emily, Frank spends most of his time in her 12-yearold daughter's room. "She's his favorite," she says. He's even getting along with the cats all one big happy adopted family!

MOVIE R EVIEWS Mustang (PG-13) Ad Vitam/ Netflix

"Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a 13-year-old girl," is a quote from one of my favorite books and films of all time, The Virgin Suicides. Just as dark and sadly whimsical, the Turkish-French film Mustang explores the beauty and challenges of growing up female in a male-dominated, conservative society. Five free-spirited sisters left in the charge of their grandmother and uncle after being orphaned early in life quickly learn that the consequences of their actions, however innocent, are dictated by the confines of a patriarchal system that views them as potential wives and homemakers, not as individuals capable of deciding their own futures. A swim in the ocean with male classmates and far-fetched rumors of impropriety change the sisters' lives forever, becoming prisoners in their home while being groomed for arranged marriages. Based on the personal life of director Deniz Gamze Erguven, Mustang has won a cornucopia of awards and received several nominations, including Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. I think it's safe to say that with such a popular directorial debut and incredibly talented, fledgling cast, this won't be the last we hear from Erguven. Fantastic.

When estranged childhood friends Wyatt (MacLeod Andrews) and Christian (Evan Dumouchel) meet again, a short bout of awkwardness is replaced by fond memories, despite the fact that they're both hiding dark secrets from one another. Both recently single from long-term relationships, the two resort to bro-ship antics, including a double-date that ends up being an inebriated party of three in an emergency waiting room. As they find themselves getting close again, the secrets begin to unravel, including Wyatt's supposed knowledge of an impending war between the human race and parasitic, sinister forces parading as people. Christian has a choice to make and so does Wyatt. Who should he really be protecting Christian from, and who can he actually trust? With an intensity similar to films such as Fight Club and The Machinist, They Look Like People definitely deserves a nod for acknowledging issues such as depression and mental illness without demonizing them while still providing the bones for a decent horror film. The dialogue is a bit lackluster at times, and there are some ends that don't really meet, but overall it's a convincing portrayal by Andrews and a job well done for writer/director Perry Blackshear. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Heart Beautiful Broken Concord Bicyle Music Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Ann and Nancy Wilson are still alive and kicking ass. On Beautiful Broken, they've teamed up with some relatively unexpected contributors like James Hetfield of Metallica and Ne-Yo. However, the collaborations feel entirely natural, which is not so unexpected considering the sisters' four-plus decades of mainstream staying power. And *clears throat* yes, most of the tracks are previouslyreleased polished gems, but that's not to say they're holding on to anything but a desire to experiment with their own craft. Whether it's thundering riffs coupled with stainless steel power vocals or lilting, stripped-down folk, the Wilsons do a nice job staying in their comfort zone. The two faces are back-to-back immediately with the titular Hetfield-soaked track that melts into the sweet, key-driven ballad of "Two," written by Ne-Yo. "I Jump" is new, sounding off like Tool but floating in and out of string arrangements by John Buckmaster, known for his work with Elton John and Bowie. "Heaven" is a mellow trip into a nostalgic psychedelia, proving that whether they're snarling or crooning, Heart may be the most appropriately named band in history.

Steven Tyler We're Already Somebody From Nowhere Dot It's not terribly unusual for artists whose talents have long since been cemented to venture into another genre (or identity crisis), but it's also a crapshoot. As someone who's not a fan of modern country (especially the repetitive, hip-hop laced grossness), I will say this: I'm not as annoyed as I should be by the iconic Aerosmith frontman's foray into such a popular yet unfamiliar genre. "My Own Worst Enemy" shines with honesty and twinkly percussion - there's nothing about a dog, front porch or prison, but it's a solid pop tune with decent lyrics and a chorus that is unmistakably late 90's Aerosmith. Elsewhere, there's an industrial, grungy element to "Hold On (Won't Let Go)," while "It Ain't Easy" and "Love is Your Name" are greeting card commercial material, more typical of the pink camo crowd. Similarly, "I Make My Own Sunshine" is so cute it makes me want to punch myself in the throat (where's Colbie Callait when you need her?). Skip over "RED, WHITE & YOU," try to enjoy a slightly awkward version of "Janie's Got a Gun" and an unnecessary cover of "Piece of My Heart." A track-skipper for sure, but let's just let the old coot do what he wants. -Whitney Patterson

Russian Circles Guidance Sargent house When you take vocals out of music, it can be difficult for a band to differentiate themselves from other bands with a similar motif. That usually cannot be said for Russian Circles. Their previous efforts have helped define the last decade of instrumental rock/metal. Guidance continues that tradition, almost rivaling their previous highwater mark, 2008’s Station. The introductory track, “Asa,” is a lush pad of reverb swelling and pulsing under guitarist Mike Sullivan’s sparse, fingerpicked melody. The drums begin to fade in at the end, beginning the next track, “Vorel,” with a sense of urgency. They simultaneously sound tighter yet more thunderous, thanks in no small part to the production of Converge’s Kurt Ballou. Dave Turncrantz’s drumming is always an integral part of the melody rather than just a timekeeper, so Kurt’s mastery of recording the low end of the sonic spectrum cannot go unappreciated. “Mota” starts with a clean staccato riff under a swelling reverb-drenched melody that ultimately builds to a somewhat anticlimactic act break with “Afrika.”“Overboard” serves as an atmospheric intermission of sorts before the album completely runs out of steam on “Calla” and “Lisboa,” a pair of tracks that unfortunately do sound pretty similar to another “instru-metal” band, Pelican. Even with a few low points, these Chicagoans have still managed to put out yet another solid album. Check it out.

Heliotropes Over There That Way BMG/The End Records Since 2013’s A Constant Sea, Heliotropes singer/guitarist Jessica Numsuwankijkul quietly replaced the entire band. (So quietly, in fact, that as of August 11, their Wikipedia page still shows the original members.) The riot grrrl meets early ‘90s alternative/shoegaze sound of the previous album is still there, but new influences bring… well, a bit of a mixed bag. The band is at its best when she’s given space to experiment with different textures and effects that her approach to guitar affords. Opener “Normandy,” “Dardanelles Part I,” and “I Can’t Remember” are perfect examples of songs that benefit from having a more adept rhythm section behind her earnestly raw (albeit admittedly unpolished) playing. And album closer “Goodnight Soldier,” a plaintively picked acoustic number with breathy Bilinda Butcher-esque vocals, shows another facet of her playing. Unfortunately, the lazily strummed rhythm guitar of “Easy” is far too clunky, out of tune, and tonally different to not be intentional. The jaggedness seems contrived against the much warmer tones found elsewhere on the album, seeming too out of place to be sincere. With its alternating baritone male/alto female vocals accompanied by a nearly country/western guitar lead, the title track might as well be called “We Liked The Theme Song From True Detective.” And the saxophone solo in “Wherever You Live” sends it from Lynchian ‘50s nostalgia to the song from prom in Back to the Future. The album definitely belies the band’s potential, which will hopefully be realized with future releases. - Jonathan Gluff

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Descendents Hypercaffium Spazzinate Epitaph

Dinosaur Jr. Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not Jagjaguwar

Having been active for nearly 30 years, there are two things that can be said about this band: They’re officially a punk rock institution, and we’re still not any closer to knowing whether it’s “The Descendents” or just “Descendents.” Hypercaffium Spazzinate also proves another thing: They can still make a great punk album. One thing long-time fans have to accept is that these guys are getting older (in fact, downright ancient by punk standards). In fact, singer Milo Aukerman actually sounds his most invigorated in years while singing about it. “On Paper” touts his middle-aged achievements, subtly reminding us that he did go to college, lest we forget their first LP’s title. And “No Fat Burger” sounds just as youthfully angsty as anything from the Fat EP, and not just in title alone. Descendents have always snuck in a few socially-conscious references. “Shameless Halo” calls out hypocrisy from the holier-than-thou crowd, while “Human Being” points the finger at not only those who start wars, but those who do not help others in need: "Trip over the homeless on the way to the store/We don’t even notice anymore/Just waiting for the Prez to fix it." It’s a stinging accusation many of us need to hear. It's good to see the forefathers of what we call "pop-punk" still breathing new life into a near-dead genre.

The fact that Dinosaur Jr. and Mock Orange have both released new albums this year solidifies the fortitude of indie rock in a sea of over-produced pop/ hip-hop yuck. Produced and primarily written by singer/guitarist J Mascis, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not is (mostly) seamless, relaxed, shameless comfort. Maybe the album title is foretelling - there's no glimpse of anything but what we've always loved. Don't change a thing, boys. "Going Down" and "Tiny" are sunny skater tracks with ambiguous lyrics and crunchy riffs, while "Be a Part" is more nasal wistfulness. Any even keel is often upset by a raucous solo, a DJ trait found in the otherwise low-key "I Told Everyone" and lethargy of "Lost All Day," but there's not much timidity to conquer in "I Walk for Miles," which is probably the darkest song on the album musically. "Knocked Around" starts off as a yearning ballad with perfectly cued taps and simple strumming and ends up in a frantically tight display of Murph's chops, always slightly overshadowed by Mascis. To me, "Left/Right" makes for an odd conclusion to the album - it somehow feels unfinished. If they'd scootched it back a few, it would've made more sense. Nitpicking aside, it's good to hear from them.

Pfarmers Our Puram Joyful Noise

Hockey Dad

Boronia Kanine Records I’m not normally a super cheery person. So for me to say an album can actively put me in a better mood is a fairly formidable achievement. Make no mistake - that is the point of Hockey Dad’s debut full-length, Boronia, and to that end they greatly succeed. Aussie pair Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming grew up on the coast Down Under, but they want to bring the beach to their listeners. Most of the album plays like the perfect beach party concert. Tight pop rock songs touched with a tinge of sunny surf rock bounce along merrily, belying the occasional Pixies or Sonic Youth influence. Sure, it’s nothing groundbreaking or revelatory, but it sure is fun. And it’s impossible to listen to the infectious handclap-laden beat of album standout “Laura” and not at least tap your feet. The band swings through the song with the swagger of The Strokes, but with a healthy dose of optimism in place of Julian Casablancas & Co.’s trademark “Too Cool to Care” apathy. It’s easy to make comparisons to other bands with a clear surf influence such as Wavves, Best Coast, and La Luz, and that’s something I doubt the pair would deny. But honestly, with one of the clear underlying themes of the album being just having fun together with your friends, isn’t that kind of the point? - Jonathan Gluff

When Danny Seim of Pfarmers decided to leave Portland, Oregon for Louisville, Kentucky, he and fellow band members Dave Nelson (Sufjan Stevens) and Bryan Devendorf (The National) were already working on their sophomore album. As a small child, Seim was introduced to seemingly negative images of Rajneesh followers, and decided as an adult to research the events surrounding Rajneeshpuram, exiting the other side with a more informed and compassionate view. His interest in the subject and a desire to incorporate his home state bore Our Puram, symbolizing both his departure and that of Rajneeshpuram residents. The intro, "97741," is an ominous yet hopeful nod to the brief zipcode designated to the settlement, signaling the oncoming rise and downfall with an instrumental, meditational layering of Eastern sounds, setting the musical tone. What follows are dulcet, mellow, yet powerful tracks of stories mostly forgotten and their relation to disenfranchised groups being used as temporary tools for a larger agenda under the guise of community - "You're with us/ Or you are dead to us." Inspired and softly political while maintaining an upbeat groove, Our Puram deserves more than a high-five. -Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Ballast Point Pumpkin Down

Daniel Knight • 3.75 I don’t know how long San Diego-based Ballast Point has been brewing but it showed up on my radar less than a year ago. Pumpkin Down pours up surprisingly as dark as root beer with a lackluster one finger head that quickly fades away and leaves no lacing. BTW, that’s pretty normal for a beer containing fruit (pumpkin). It smells like malts, pumpkin and spices - mainly nutmeg to my nose. The taste mainly follows the nose in a very good way. I pick up on even more complexity via my tastebuds. The mouthfeel is medium and the finish is pleasant. I recommend that you give this one a try this fall season. Paul Bragin • 3.25 A thick tan head tops this dark reddish-brown beer and stays for a long time. The scent of the beer contains a significant amount of spice notes as well as malt. The initial taste of the beer starts off neutral, but spice flavors begin playing on the tongue a few seconds later, followed by malt presence and even more spices in the long finish. Pair it with apple pie or carrot cake. Jabez Martinez • 2.5 I am usually a big pumpkin fan but this one's not very good. The taste of allspice that you usually get in a pumpkin beer is there, but that's about the only flavor; there's an earthiness to it that I don't like. I've seen other Ballast Point beers on the shelf and may give them a try but this one's disappointing.

Goose Island Oktoberfest

Yazoo Hop Perfect IPA

Daniel Knight • 3 Goose Island is brewing some pretty nice beers these days. This one is their annual update of a popular seasonal Oktoberfest. Generally Oktoberfest beers are in a family called Märzen (German for March). They're brewed in the early spring, fermenting most of the summer for a higher than usual ABV fall brew. This one is 6.4%. It pours up the color of very strong black tea and produces a generous, light khakicolored head with very little lacing. The nose is of toasted malts with toffee. It’s sweet smelling with a mild fruity-ness. The taste is a lot like the aroma with earthy-toasted malt, some spiciness and almost no hoppiness. The finish is dry and mouthfeel acceptable but maybe on the light side.

Daniel Knight • 4 I reviewed a Yazoo brew last month. These folks are in Nashville, TN and make the locally famous Gerst Amber Ale - namesake of the Gerst Haus. This one had me curious because it’s an IPA and that’s a whole different genre from their claim to fame. I was pleasantly surprised with a light drinkable IPA that satisfies even a picky IPA snob like me. Its nose is of floral and tropical citrus hops. Very pleasant. The taste is led by pine and citrus hops. The finish is surprisingly somewhat malty and that helps to meld in to a wellbalanced drinkable, relatively low ABV brew. Try it, you’ll like it.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head forms on this beer when poured into a mug. The color of the beer seems reminiscent of maple syrup. Prominent malt scents control the first smell of the beer. The sweet flavors from the malt remain when drinking the beer and begin to smooth out during the finish. This beer is only available from August to October, so get it while you can. Pair it with sausages and other German dishes.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head rests on top of this hazy golden ale after pouring it into a traditional English pub glass. Strong citrus notes and subtle pine notes dominate the nose. With the first sip of the beer, the hop flavors seem to take a minute to hit the tongue, but the citrus notes really shine in the finish. This might be good for someone who is new to IPAs. Pair it with spicy food.

Jabez Martinez • 4 This is your standard amber/brown-colored Oktoberfest. I consider this one a lighter version of an Oktoberfest. It does have the apricot flavor of most Oktoberfest beers, but the other flavors are a little less detectable. I consider this beer just a little better than average; however, it does have a 6.4% ABV which is a plus.

Jabez Martinez • 3 This is a nice amber-colored beer with an immediate, distinct smell of hops. The standard grapefruit flavor of the hops is there - very noticeable - and it has a pretty dry finish. Still, this is a swing and a miss in my book. The first couple of sips are good, but then it loses its appeal.

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 8 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. 88 |

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Victory Golden Monkey

is unmistakably boozy. It's important to keep in mind that this one is 9.5% ABV and should include a designated driver. Overall, I like this one and could find myself buying it in the future. Paul Bragin • 4 A decent white head crowns this golden beer when poured into a Belgian ale glass. The shape of the glass helps to accentuate the spice scents present when smelling the beer. The spices remain with the first sip of the beer, along with malt flavors. Despite a high alcohol content, this beer is light, crisp and refreshing. Beer aficionados will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with sheep’s milk cheeses and seafood dishes.

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Victory Brewing is in Downingtown, PA and creates a long list of excellent brews. This one pours a hazy lemonade color with an adequate white head. There's an effervescence present that seems a little over-the-top. It smells like a Belgian - it’s the yeast, but with some fruit (bananas) and spice notes as well. Its taste includes banana, Belgian yeast, spices and an identifiable clove kiss. There’s unmistakably alcohol at mid-palate, and the finish

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I love Belgian Tripels and this one is about the best one I've had from a bottle rather than directly from a tap at a microbrewery. It pours a nice straw color. I like the nice spices which are easily detected and, unbelievably, this beer has a 9.5 %ABV. Usually with a beer like this, you can taste the alcohol but not with this one - so be careful and don't drink too fast!

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest

Blue Moon Cinnamon Horchata Ale

Daniel Knight • 2.75 Here’s this year's version of an annual seasonal release. It pours up pretty and clear copper colored with a light cream colored airy head that settles to a thin film after a few minutes and leaves a bit of lacing as you drink it down. The smell is of caramel-like malts. The taste is less than exciting and although not-bad, not especially inviting either. Some maltiness, a slight very mild hop bitterness in the middle and an uneventful finish. Ironically, in my opinion, it’s weakest attribute is the flavor. Check it out. You may feel different.

Daniel Knight • 2.75 I have to admit, I wasn’t looking forward to this one as I’m not a big fan of Blue Moon or wheat ales in general. That’s just me. It pours up a nice yellow but with a foamy light white head that quickly dissipates. It smells mostly of cinnamon and light toast. The flavor follows with some cinnamon, slight sweetness and mild spice settling in to a bland aftertaste. Still not a big fan.

Paul Bragin • 3.75 A thin, almost nonexistent head quickly disappears from this copper colored beer after pouring it into a classic beer mug. Malt notes dominate the scent profile. The malt flavors and some subtle toasted notes continue with the first sip of the beer, with a hint of hops coming through in the finish. Pair it with bratwurst, pork chops, spätzle (a traditional German dumpling), soft pretzels or spiced apple cake. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a nice amber-colored beer with a strong aroma of malts. In the season of the Oktoberfest, I would consider this one better than average. This style is not my favorite type of beer but it's pretty good as Oktoberfests go. I like the caramel malt flavor. Overall, this is a pretty solid beer.

Paul Bragin • 3.5 A nice white head forms on this cloudy ale once it’s poured into a wheat beer glass. Cinnamon scents first hit the nose when smelling the beer. More traditional malt flavors present themselves first while drinking the beer, with a more subdued cinnamon presence coming through in the finish. This might be a good introduction for someone new to craft beer. Pair it with semi-soft cheeses like Fontina, vanilla and custard desserts or chocolate. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This beer has a golden color with a cinnamon smell that hits you right away. I had a cinnamon beer a while back and couldn’t choke it down, but I really like this one. I would compare this to drinking a snicker doodle, if that makes any sense. It's sweet and the cinnamon is not overbearing. It may not be a session beer but will be on my list to buy.

TAP TALK

WITH JOHN GREENWELL | OWNER OF BEEF 'O' BRADY'S

W

e are coming into that time of year that all beer drinkers love for its glorious seasonal beers - fall. It’s when all the great Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers are tapped and enjoyed in every craft beer bar in town. If you don’t have these beers on draft, then you are missing the boat. Even the everyday light beer drinkers love the fall seasonals.

Are you ready for some football? Is your fantasy football team set? Are you ready for your favorite team to kick off the season? I know we are. There is no better place than Beef ‘O’ Brady’s to watch your favorite team, either college or pro. Come out and enjoy your favorite team on one of our high-def TVs or watch the game of the week on the 140 inch big screen. We can’t wait to see all our fans enjoying their teams. So, here we go, lets kick this season off already!

Here is what really defines these types of brews: Oktoberfest: Autumn is the time for Germany’s famed Oktoberfest, probably the greatest holiday dedicated to beer in the world. So it only makes sense that many breweries offer their own Oktoberfest beer. Oktoberfest beers are typically heavier brews that are wellaged with a deep gold to copper color. Melanoidin notes from the aroma define the flavor. If you want to really celebrate like a true Bavarian, find one of these beers and raise your stein. Our selection this year will consist of Paulaner and Left Hand Oktoberfest beers and Sam Adams Octoberfest beers. Over the years, these three have proven to be the best you can find in our area.

8177 Bell Oaks Dr • Newburgh • (812) 490-9464

Pumpkin: It should come as no surprise that pumpkin, the most autumn-inspired food, dominates the seasonal beer scene every fall. Pumpkin beers allude to their pastry counterparts, often featuring large amounts of nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon. Pumpkin also creates a heavier body, giving these beers a more dessert-like feel. In fact, these seasonal beers are so popular, they are starting to be released earlier and earlier every year. Our lineup this year for pumpkin beers will consist of Jack ‘O’ Traveler (my favorite), Southern Tier PumKing, Dog Fish Head Punkin, and Schlafly Pumpkin. I, myself, personally enjoy these the most out of all the flavor profiles of the year. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • September 2016

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS

Walter the Wine Guy And now the rest of the Chardonnay story: More valuable info and recommendations from Liquor Locker's resident expert

[] 4

Last month we were talking about Chardonnay and I mentioned that it can be done as a “Sparkling Wine." Well, some of the BEST are done with this versatile grape. As previously noted, the Chardonnay GREAT PICKS grape is originally from the Burgundy FOR region of France. This is where Champagne is located, along with Chablis, Macon, and other renowned regions known for their Chardonnay. The Chardonnay is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier to produce a very diverse flavor palate that can be light and bright with clean fruity notes, to a big, heavy wine that can be enjoyed with a steak and all flavors in between!

that does not mean cheap! “Vintage” wines are dated with the year the grapes were harvested and the wines produced will reflect the flavors captured in the grapes at that time. Nonvintage Sparkling Wines are very consistent in their flavor profile from year to year, with very little change, or deviation in flavor, while Vintage Sparkling Wines can have changes that can be very noticeable. This can be due to weather changes that may have happened during the growing season.

So, let’s try to explain a few things about Sparkling Wine that you may need to know so you can make an educated purchase.

“Extra Brut” or “Brut Naturale”: This denotes that the wine has 0 to 6 grams of sugar in the finished product. This is the driest version, and should impart crispness, and no sweet fruit flavors that would work well with caviar or other strong flavors like that.

SEPTEMBER

Vintage or Nonvintage: The majority of Sparkling Wines are “Nonvintage” or N/V. This means that the grapes used in the production of the wine are from multiple vintages. This makes it easier to produce large quantities and in most cases, less expensive wine. Now, “less expensive” is a relative term; it's less expensive than vintage wine, but

Sweetness level of the wine: This is done by the classification of the style of the wine. You may notice “Brut," “Extra Dry” or similar words on the labels of your favorite Sparkling Wine. Well, this is to signify the amount of sweetness in the wine. With that being said here is what you get when you buy a Sparkling Wine:

“Brut”: This tells you that the wine has less than 15 grams of sugar in the finished product. Again, this is a dry wine, but it can have light fruitiness, and is still crisp. Again, seafood is a great pairing with this style of wine. “Extra Dry”: Has from 12 to 20 grams of sugar in the finished product and is nice and easy to drink. It tends to be mostly dry, but has slight bursts of fruit that are brought to the fore with the little touch of sugar that is added to the wine. This is a wine you would serve with fresh fruit. “Sec”: Has 17 to 35 grams of sugar and is considered a medium sweet finished product. Personally, I have not seen much of this in my years of working in this business, but I have tasted this wine in California. It's a perfect “sit a sip” style of wine. It's not too sweet, though it does have a noticeable light sweetness. “Demi-Sec”: Has 33 to 55 grams of sugar in the finished product and is considered sweet. This style is widely available and does have many fans; it's fresh and fruity, with a nice sweetness to balance the crispness of the wine.

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS “Doux”: Has 55 grams or more of sugar in the finished product. It's very hard to find in our market and is considered a dessert wine. OK, now that we have gotten the definitions out of the way, let’s talk about what to buy! My favorite Sparkling Wines are usually Chardonnay heavy, meaning that there is more Chardonnay used in the making of the wine. In the Vintage category, try Perrier Jouet “Epoque” Vintage Champagne. It's lightly fruit forward with a crisp note that makes this a wonderful experience. It isn’t cheap, but in my humble opinion, it's one of the best! Look for this to set you back about 200 dollars a bottle. CHANDON BRUT CLASSIC

A very reasonably priced and well made option.

Now, those are from the Champagne Region. If you want a better value that is a bit closer to home, I recommend the following: From the people who do Dom Perrignon you can drink Chandon Brut from their California property. It's reasonably priced and is very well made, very similar to their N/V Moet et Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne.

Lightly fruit forward with a crisp note that makes this a wonderful experience.

And finally for those who want “Bubbles on a Budget," try Korbel Brut. It's under 20 bucks and really good for the money!

Another Champagne that I drink that doesn’t hurt your wallet as much is from Nicolas Feuillatte. Their N/V Brut is one of the most delightful Sparkling wines I have had the pleasure of drinking. It's so very balanced and light and without an abundance of Pinot Noir in it so it doesn't have the heaviness that is common in many Champagnes. If you have a few extra dollars you should really give this one a try. It’s not too pricey - usually runs from 27 to 35 dollars a bottle. If you find you like this one then also try their Rosé, it's really a treat! It can run from 40 to 50 dollars a bottle.

NICOLAS FEUILLATTE N/V BRUT

A must try wine!

So, there's a quick primer on “Bubbles." I hope this gives you enough information to help you make your choice easier. Until next time, thanks for the support and again if you want more information just stop by our stores and ask the clerks. They can get the info to me and I will get back to you!
