GUNS & HOSES XI FORD CENTER | APRIL 7 | 7 P.M.

A rubber match for the ages: Area fire, police departments set to box again in the name of charity

T

he Ford Center is going to be rocking, all right. After 10 epic Guns & Hoses boxing events, the scorecard reads 5-5 with both sides deadlocked and hungry for a tie-breaking victory. Yes, on April 7, area first responders will face off in the ring for the 11th time to raise money for children and people with disabilities in our community - and for bragging rights, of course. But no matter which side prevails, the true spirit of this hugely popular (and mostly friendly) competition always shines through with proceeds going to great organizations all over the tri-state, including Evansville ARC, House of Hope, Santa Clothes Club, S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome and many, many more - all made possible through 911 Gives Hope, a group of police officers, firefighters and paramedics from Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick County, IN, and Henderson County, KY. We caught up with fighters Ryan Conaway (Guns) and Michael Smith (Hoses) ahead of the event to get their take on this wonderful charity. How did you first get involved with Guns

& Hoses? Ryan Conaway (Posey Co. EMS): The first year I fought, I was part of the Henderson County Jail, the detention center down there. It got around that I had done MMA fighting - that I have a 5-1 record with that. That spread around to the police officers there and they got in touch with Guns & Hoses. The first year they asked me to fight, it was only a couple weeks out [from the Conaway & Smith get acquainted event] and I didn't feel comfortable with that, but I did it the next year. gear and let you go at it. I've done that I trained pretty regularly and also trained before and so I decided to go ahead and at home outside of the designated days. train and check the coaches out, see what Unfortunately, I lost my first match, because it's all about. I had no idea what it really was I was post-three weeks fighting in a MMA - the stuff I had done before was basically fight and having my nose fractured. My a bar brawl. For Guns & Hoses, guys are opponent got a good shot at my nose, and using technique - and I'm getting gassed it was gushing - but it wasn't an easy win for 45 seconds into a round and I look like a him. I also lost my second and third fights robot. They're just drilling me. So at first I as well. But this year I'm looking to finally thought maybe I shouldn't do this. But the change that and get a 'W' instead of an 'L'. more I went to train, the more comfortable I felt. Michael Smith (McCutchanville Fire Department): A couple of guys in our What's it like to walk into the ring in front department mentioned it - mainly our chief, of a raucous Ford Center crowd? Neil Reitz, who is fighting Conaway: It was a famous boxer who this year. I've been to the once said, "You can have all the plans in event a couple of times the world, but it all goes out the window and watched him. I work once you get hit in the face." People out a lot, anyways, and get so worried about the crowd - you even though I don't have have thousands of people watching; any boxing experience... some are cheering, some are booing; Bars used to have these you're trying to listen to your coach and "tough man" contests remember everything you've been taught; where there weren't any your adrenaline's pumping. It can be sanctioned rules - they'd overwhelming. But once you get in that ring just give you some and you realize that it's go-time and the gloves and some head bell's rung, it's time to get serious.

What do expect from this monumental tie-breaking event? Conaway: Last year - being the 10th year - was a big year because we had very good attendance for the Ford Center. We raised a substantial amount of money more than we did the year prior. And the Guns tied up the series 5-5. So this year, from what I can gather, it looks like we have a lot more new fighters - or people that fought years ago and are coming back. Smith: It looks like a really good fight card. Everyone seems to be paired up really well. But that's another reason I decided to hop in this year, too - I want to break that tie. The Hoses want to take that belt back. If I can contribute, that would be great. Do you see the impact of Guns & Hoses firsthand? Conaway: Definitely, because we always do a fighter appreciation luncheon that's usually on the FOP [Fraternal Order of Police] campground area. I knew that the money went to other organizations that helped out children, but I didn't know that they even give away money to individual families who might be struggling or their child might have to go up to Riley [Hospital for Children] or St. Jude. Seeing that made me even more proud and happy that I can be a part of this organization and this event. Smith: I actually went to that same luncheon last year and all the organizations got up and spoke to the crowd - to people who participate - and it was amazing. I mean, we participated in the toy drive - McCutchanville sponsored that. It's just amazing what first responders on all sides do for their community. Evansville's got a great community of people here. What do you feel like the morning after Guns & Hoses? Conaway: Oh, you're sore. That whole fight-or-flight response to your body, the adrenaline's pumping - and then once it's over, we have a big party, the alcohol's flowing and everybody's having a good time. Both teams are conversing back and forth, laughing and joking. But that next morning when you wake up... the adrenaline's gone and your whole body is sore. Any predictions or famous last words? Smith: I don't know, the way the fight card looks, I think it's going to be very close. There are enough guys that have experience and some new guys that have matched up against some of the veterans that I think are going to give them a run for their money. I think it's going to go right to the end to see who takes it. Conaway: But the Guns are going to win. Smith: I don't believe that. 4192: AN EVENING WITH PETE ROSE VIC TO RY T H E AT R E | MA R CH 31 | 7 P. M.

Baseball's "Hit King" talks Don Mattingly, Ichiro, Shohei Otani, the Astros and more Last September, baseball legend Pete Rose brought his "4192" show to the RiverPark Center in downtown Owensboro, KY, delighting fans of all ages with funny, engaging stories about his days as a big leaguer. It was a hit, so to speak, and now "Charlie Hustle" is coming back our way, eager to share some more laughs and wisdom with the tri-state. For those who grew up playing and watching America's pastime, this is a must-see event, a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the top athletes of all time. What makes "4192" so special is Rose's connection with the people who come out and support him; he's truly humble in that regard. "I really understand and appreciate fans - I always did. I always understood the importance of fans. Without fans, you have nothing," he says. And he means it.

Do you adapt your show in any way depending on the audience or where you're holding the event? I have my standard one-liners, but I usually base the show on my audience - how they react. And, of course, when you take the questions from the audience, you never know what kinds of questions you're going to get. That's the good part of it. You know, a lot of people just get up there and talk and talk and talk, but I've learned over the years that when you do something like that [take questions], people feel like they're a part of you and that they can talk to you. It's obvious that not everybody there can talk to me, but we'll take questions for 45 minutes to an hour. That's easy for me, too, because most of the time, when someone asks a question, it will remind me of a funny story. And [my manager] JT does a good job up there talking about my dad, growing up and things like that. You know, it's a good show for kids; it's a good show for adults; it's a good show for adults with their dads there. We make it as amusing

and entertaining as we can. Here in Evansville, Don Mattingly and Bernie Williams recently held a charity event to beneďŹ t underserved children - and Hall of Famer Bob Gibson was there, too. Lots of kids came out. Gibson was one of the tougher pitchers I faced. I didn't get to play against Bernie Williams. I think I probably played against Don Mattingly in some all-star games. I never faced him in the World Series - he wasn't there in '76. You know, he was a tremendous ball player. That's a strange thing with Don Mattingly, because the year that he got to the Yankees, they didn't win and the year that he left the Yankees, they did win. He was there 17, 18 years, and to be honest with you, it's hard to be with a team that long that's won 27 championships and not be part of one. Especially when you're as good a player as he was. Speaking of tough pitchers that you faced over the years, Pittsburgh Pirate Kent Tekulve - with his sidearm delivery - always seemed like a real challenge for a hitter. There were a couple of guys that did that - we

IMPORTANCE OF FANS. WITHOUT FANS, YOU HAVE NOTHING"

had a guy on our team named Ted Abernathy. And of course, Kansas City had [Dan] Quisenberry. It's really not sidearm, it's underhand. And I did pretty well against Tekulve, because when you're a pitcher like Tekulve, you have trouble with left hand hitters; you don't have trouble with right hand hitters, because that breaking ball will start from underneath the mound and end up on the outside part of the plate. Kent was a pretty good pitcher, but it was a big advantage to be a left-handed hitter against him. He was called "The Stick" for his build - he was like a professional blood donor. Everyone is talking about Shohei Otani, the Japanese phenom who signed with the Angels. What's your take on him? Is he worthy of all the hype? Well, listen, I'm one of these guys... I've played baseball in Japan - I went over there a couple of different times. The Japanese people practice right and they play hard. But I'm not going to get overly excited about someone coming from the Japanese league going to the big leagues. Now, he might have dominated in Japanese baseball which he did, I believe. But just playing over there, the game of baseball - and I'm not saying anything negative about Japanese baseball - the game of baseball in Japan is not nearly as equivalent as the game of baseball in the United States. But you have to be very delicate with this, because you're not putting anybody down. It's like comparing the Canadian Football League with the NFL. You make more money playing here than you do in Japan, because first of all, they play 130 games. Now, if they were all so good, there'd be more of them coming here. You've got [Hideki] Matsui and Ichiro, a [future] Hall of Famer - they've done well. But then you've got guys that left here that couldn't cut it and then went over to Japan and became folk heroes. Guys like Tuffy Rhodes and [Randy] Bass - he got released from the States and went over to Japan and the next few years won Triple Crowns. On the subject of Ichiro, there are some

people that choose to look at the totality of his hits, combining both his Japanese league and MLB numbers - which together surpass your record of 4,256. Well, let me straighten out something. I think when you talk about Ichiro playing in Japan and you're going to add those Japanese hits onto his total... I would call his Japanese hits professional hits, correct? He got paid to play baseball and he got hits. So, if you're going to add his Japanese hits, how come you don't add my minor league hits? Now if you do that, I've got over 4700. It's fine to add Ichiro's hits, but nobody knows what he would have done if he had come here when he was 20, 21. Because as you know, not many guys - ever have dominated big league baseball at the age of 20 or 21. When was the last time someone that age won a batting title? Not to take anything away from Ichiro, but hey, it's not my fault that he waited so long to come over here. I think he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, though. Going back to Otani, how do you think you would have reacted to the sort of hype he's getting when you first joined the major leagues? Look, you put pressure on yourself. There ain't no pressure playing baseball. Pressure in baseball is, ok, you've got one game to go and you need three hits to get 200; or you're hitting .299 and you've got to get one or two hits to hit .300; or you're starting a game with 19 wins and you've got one chance to get to 20. There's no pressure on any big league baseball player today. Because they make so much darn money - how can they have any pressure? I mean, last year, the World Series share for the winning team was over $500,000. Don't you want that kind of pressure? Pressure is when you make $5000 a month and your bills are $7000. I just disagree with all these players that say that the pressure's too much. Good players over the years - and I've been around a lot of them they thrive on pressure. Pressure is when you've got a man on third in the ninth inning and two outs and you're at bat. You've got to get a hit. But that's not really pressure that's enjoying the situation. Some

guys love it and other guys can't stand it. That's why a manager selects certain people to do certain things. All you try to do as a manager is keep players out of certain situations that they'll fail in. Look, baseball is the toughest game in the world. And I'll tell you why: because baseball is the only game in the world - the only - where you fail seven out of 10 times to go to the Hall of Fame. Every baseball player's goal is to hit .300. Listen, I made over 9800 outs - but it was fun making the outs. Finally, the World Series was a wild one back in October with the Astros - who were terrible just four or five years ago - coming back to win over the Dodgers in 7 games. What did Houston do that other teams didn't to get back to the top? First of all, they signed guys like [Carlos] Correa, [George] Springer, [José] Altuve - they brought them up through their organization. And they went out and added some pieces to the puzzle. You've got to give [team president] Reid Ryan some credit. I think they're a perfect team that will tell you... it didn't take them four or five years - they've been competitive the last couple of years. If you have a talented GM that knows what the team needs and can go out and get the right players, it doesn't take that many players to turn a program around. You don't need to go out and make household changes. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre. com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

Photo Credit: Rick Diamond vocal harmonies are back in a big way on The Mission - even without Dennis DeYoung in the mix. Is there any particular secret to creating them in the studio? JY: We've always had strong singers and back in the day, you would always double track your background choruses - there's just something about three voices versus six voices. All of a sudden it just starts to sound... it has more impact. You know, it's three-part harmony and there are those that say that my voice is actually the thing that made Styx sound like Styx, because Dennis and Tommy have purer voices and mine is more loud and aggressive. Their sweetness around me... you had power but you still had the glory. I'm still here, Tommy's still here and Lawrence has got a great voice and we kind of switched around parts here and there to reinforce things. Three Dog Night is a band that we kind of modeled ourselves after - a lot of Chicago bands use a lot of harmony like The Cryin' Shames. So, three-part harmony choruses came from a lot of places, and it is one of our trademarks. Even without Dennis, we can do it. Now, the last time you came through Evansville, you played a headlining show at the Victory. We spoke with Ricky [Phillips] and politely asked him to pass on a request to you to play "Half Penny, Two Penny" from Paradise Theater - which did not appear in the set. What happened? JY: [Laughs] Well, we did play "Half Penny, Two Penny" at one point in time in the post-DeYoung era of the band. I'm not sure if we've done it with Ricky on stage. You know, for some people it's in their top ďŹ ve Styx songs - and I appreciate that. But that one has somehow gotten away from the list. Well, we're done talking to Ricky - that's it. He was no help at all. JY: [Laughs] We love Ricky - he's great. And he's got stories. He's seen things that nobody else has seen. I mean, Tommy dated [Exorcist actress] Linda Blair but Ricky lived with her for three months. Styx and REO have a long partnership and have both been around for decades. Do you reminisce much on tour with those guys? JY: [Laughs] Well, both bands have very few of the original pieces still operating. In REO, it's only the keyboard player, Neal, and in Styx it's me. I mean, [original Styx bassist] Chuck Panozzo is out more and more, but he's just out on stage for a couple of songs. So, there's not a lot of "way back" conversations. If I'm going to reminisce about the sixties, I have to go talk to Neal Doughty. Ironically, [REO singer] Kevin Cronin grew up about three miles from where I grew up, but I never met him until 1983. We have similar experiences and similar stories to tell. But like I said, there's not a whole lot Building 429 of talking about "the old days."

You were born right here in Evansville, correct? Neal Doughty: Yes, I was born right downtown in Deaconess Hospital. I lived in Evansville until I was about 12 years old. Do you have fond memories of your time here? ND: Actually, yes. I mean, I'm not familiar with the real layout of the town, but I grew up on Ravenswood Drive - that's not too far from downtown. And my cousins lived a block away - they were like an extra couple of brothers. I remember there wasn't a lot of development down there on the river at the time - there was just that Dress Plaza which was basically just a slanted parking lot. But I always loved going down to the river. And of course, no form of gambling was legal in Indiana at the time, but my grandfather used to take me across the river to Kentucky to see the horse races. It was a really good childhood there, I have to say. Like James Young from Styx, you've been a fixture of REO since the very beginning, over 50 years ago. How do you account for that? ND: You know, I think a lot of it has to do with not being very competitive on stage. I am perfectly happy to stand behind all these keyboards and let somebody else be the frontman - let them get the attention. And I think with a lot of bands, people come and go because of egos. And also I'm not a main songwriter in the band. Fights come up over songs. I've just got a nice, low profile - well, if there's such a thing as a low profile in a rock band - but I've got a nice, comfortable niche where I don't make any waves. And, you know, I think James is kind of the same kind of guy. I love the guy - we always share a big hug when we haven't seen each other in a while. But this is all sort of misleading, because Kevin [Cronin] has been around for

a really long time - he just wasn't on the first album. I don't want to sound like one of these bands that's touring with, like, nobody from the original band. Because three of us have been in this since the 70s and the other two since the 90s. In fact, this is the longest lineup in the history of the band. What's it been like to be a keyboard player in a guitar-based band all these years? ND: I was never trained as a keyboard player - I played the trumpet in the high school marching band. So I had a little music in my blood and when the band started up, we were just in the dormitory and it was when The Doors were just out and that little cheesy Farfisa [organ] sound defined, like, some of the late 60's rock. So that's all I was playing for a long time. I was often told to do things that didn't get in the way of the guitars - and the organ had the same mid-range as the guitars. So when they finally made digital pianos that sounded halfway decent, it was a blessing. All along, it's kind of like the keyboards have been the sweetening - sometimes we would put them on after the rhythm tracks were done to figure out where they belonged, and it truly wasn't until "Keep on Loving You" - which Kevin wrote and played on piano - that the idea of a foundation piano part appeared. And then on "Can't Fight this Feeling," when he wrote that on piano, I said, 'well, this time I'm playing piano.' I went home and I changed the intro and did a whole bunch of stuff that I knew he couldn't play he's not a soloist or anything. And I brought it back in and played it for him, and he goes, 'ok, you're playing piano on this song.' You've toured with Styx many times and know the guys very well. What sorts of high-jinks go on behind the scenes? Oh, both onstage and off especially off stage - there are, like, horrible things that happen [laughs]. Nothing illegal, but sometimes we will

walk into the other band's dressing room with just some ridiculous thing going on. I don't want to mention any names... but the first show we ever played with Styx, the keyboard player/singer - who will remain nameless walked into our dressing room totally naked. Ok, you know - it's [Lawrence] Gowan, of course. He's a hilarious guy. Just meeting the guy for the first time, it was a little strange, but he hasn't done that anymore. We told him to never do that again or the whole touring thing is off. I mean, we've played hundreds of shows with Styx - the first one was in 2000. They're just the greatest guys - it's one big, happy family. And [Don] Felder's people fit right in. He's got a great bunch of guys playing with him - not just great musicians, but good guys. Not a lot of tension on the set on this tour. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

HAIRBALL:

A BOMBASTIC CELEBRATION OF ARENA ROCK V IC TORY T H E AT R E | MA R CH 10 | 8 P. M.

Encore, encore: Rock and roll concert spectacle returning to Evansville with even more firepower Right about this time last year, the Victory Theatre was invaded by one of the wildest rock and roll spectacles this city has ever seen: Hairball. Described as "a bombastic celebration of arena rock," this absolute juggernaut of a band tours the country virtually non-stop, renewing the faith of live music fans everywhere with a full-on concert experience complete with pyrotechnics, dazzling lights and no skimping on the dry ice. Seemingly carrying rock and roll's storied past on its shoulders, Hairball resurrects the greatest acts of the 70s and 80s, a time when the guitars were loud and the shows were just one big party. Think the days of AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Kiss, Poison, Van Halen and many more - all packed into one incredible evening and delivered with that era's unmistakable look and sound.

Will there be even more firepower this time around? Yeah, yeah, we have been increasing the stage fireworks - as we're speaking I've ordered some new stuff to do more show pieces. Undoubtedly there are going to be some new things from a year ago. We've got a different singer who is incredible - doing various characters that we haven't done in a long time. This guy is the most versatile that we've had - pretty much nothing that he can't do. He's done Aerosmith and Twisted Sister... But it's like Christmas - just let it happen to you. I don't want to tell you what presents are under the tree.

Hairball's 2017 show at the Victory was standing room only and featured a great opening set by local rockers World Class Assassins. Expect another insane celebration of the music so many of us still cherish amped up to '11' for maximum effect, of course.

The GRAMMYS were recently broadcast and there was a distinct lack of rock and roll across the board. Yeah, but we haven't forgotten. I mean, MTV doesn' t play the videos anymore - that's why we're here. We're providing a very muchneeded public service. It's also way too political right now, and there's definitely no politics involved when the lights go down at a Hairball show; it's loud guitar time. We're plugged in the whole time. You're going to hear mistakes - but whatever you're going to hear, it's going to be actually happening live in front of you. No tapes.

We chatted with Hairball guitarist Happy at the very un-rock and roll hour of 9 a.m. Not surprisingly, he was in need of a hot coffee to get moving but was kind enough to talk about the upcoming show and more as he made his way to the nearest Las Vegas Starbucks.

for rock icons. We've lost David Bowie, Prince, Tom Petty and most recently, Pat Dinizio of the Smithereens. Our former soundman, Monty [Lee Wilkes] toured and mixed [The Smithereens] for awhile. He worked with just about everybody: Nirvana, The Go-Go's, Prince... but cancer took him last summer. And his brother - who was a truck driver for Aerosmith - is now our truck driver. Petty I never met. But I went out with a girl for three years that worked at Paisley Park - and I've worked out of there, too, but it's not like I ever walked up and shook Prince's hand or anything. He was a very private person and everybody that worked for him had to sign a

confidentiality clause. But I recall that at one point he bought everybody in his band snow mobiles. Do you intend to "rock till you drop" as the cliché goes? Well, right now I haven't formulated plan B. But I don't know how much glory there will be in the end - though I will definitely go kicking and screaming. If you have a plan B then you tend to play it safe. In junior high school, I wasn't doing so good with my grades and the school counselor had a little meeting with me - he told me I should have a back-up plan. And he gave me a brochure that had tons of career options from the performing arts to meat cutting - all kinds of stuff - and I respect them all, but they just didn't connect with me. I was just swinging for the fences and I was going to live or die by it [the music]. I don't recommend that to anybody, because you never know how things are going to turn out in life, but for me, I'm lucky that I can pay my mortgage. It could have gone the other way, you know. But it's not over with. You still might see me at the top of an exit with a cardboard sign - that might be my blaze of glory; we don't know. Touring the Midwest during winter does not seem ideal - although you're from Minnesota so maybe the cold doesn't faze you. Well, it's actually good for turnouts. I can remember times playing clubs and being in Fargo, North Dakota, having a Dodge van and me using some of those propane space heaters on the engine block just trying to get the oil to replicate something like liquid again so that the engine could turn over. And you would think that no one should even be traveling, but the bar was over-capacity - just packed. Didn't scare them. Throughout my career, the places that you often think are going to be uneventful are usually the places that I often have the best time. There's something about people that are just outside of major cities - they know how to have fun. They can embrace the simple things. Any classic Spinal Tap moments that you can share from your many years of touring? Oh, man - I don't know if anything comes straight to mind. I mean, some of them are kind of hard to explain; you kind of had to be there. [Happy stops to purchase a medium cappuccino at Starbucks- and there is confusion as he is handed someone else's drink initially] You know, we've been from London to Mexico to Canada and everything in between together. I promise you that a lot of life has happened in that time from every end of the spectrum. Personally, do you need to do much preparation for each run of shows considering the sheer spectacle of Hairball? For me, I keep it real simple. I keep a checklist of what I need in the truck when I leave. And I do it the same every time - you know, crazy boots and my spandex. Don't over-think it. MAKS • VAL • PETA: CONFIDENTIAL VICTORY THEATRE | MARCH 20 | 7:30 P.M.

The true stars of Dancing with the Stars talk new tour, parenthood, Tommy Chong and more Season after season, brothers Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd have dazzled a TV audience of millions on Dancing with the Stars while being paired with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry and beyond - from actress Kirstie Alley and model Amber Rose to former NBA star Metta World Peace. In the process, all three have claimed the ultimate prize at least once - the coveted Mirrorball and arguably become the true stars of the show. Off screen, this talented trio has grown even closer with Maks and Peta marrying this past summer and recently welcoming a baby boy making Val a very happy uncle. All of these life changes have been poured into Confidential, a very personal project described my Maks as "a dance show driven by our family and our love stories." It follows 2016's very successful Our Way tour which saw the Ukrainian-born brothers allow audiences into their lives, weaving the

engaging Chmerkovskiy storyline into an evening of unparalleled artistry. Now, with Confidential, Murgatroyd is adding an intriguing dynamic to the narrative, bringing the perspective of a new wife and mom into the mix - not to mention the moves of a two-time Mirrorball Champion. Maks and Peta kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory. Confidential seems like an incredibly ambitious endeavor. Maks: The process of putting it together was very special - a little bit different than anything we have experienced so far. I guess it's amplified in every way. Having said that, we're going to strip it [the production] down and keep it super intimate, and we're going to welcome you into our life. It's like you said - I like the word "ambitious." But this is what we do. Between myself, Val and Peta, there's something like 60 years combined stage, dance and television experience. Plus, the team that we have is incredible; it's going to be an amazing show and we're very much looking forward to it. And this time around you're married to one of your co-stars. Maks: We live in a very interesting time now where I guess morals and traditional family values are on a little bit of shaky ground. It's very necessary to remind people of those

values - something has to be at the center. What ensued after the last tour is actual life, you know? Things have drastically changed for me. Next thing you know, I'm a dad; I'm a husband. So these things now are experiences that I can't wait to include into how I am as a person. I am not the same person as the last time you saw me on stage - one million percent. So this is a different performer, a different character in the production. I'm excited to be that guy. Same thing for Val - maybe not as drastic in terms of life changes. But it's even more drastic for Peta, because she's now a mother. So you put us on stage, you give us a platform and let us speak, let us express ourselves... I have goosebumps. How do you imagine motherhood will impact your time on the tour? Peta: I have never done this before, so we are carefully planning every step of the way out before we leave. But I think it's going to have its challenges, too. I've toured without a child many times and it is tough; it is hard work. And you rarely have good, solid down time. You're always sort of on show. With a child now, I think that's just going to

add to the stress - but in a good way. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's a nine week tour, so I couldn't leave him at home with a nanny or anything like that. I think it's just going to add to my happiness, my joy of dancing. I love being on stage; I love performing and having my son there. And he's actually going to be able to watch it this time. Last time I was pregnant - he was in my belly. He heard a thousand shows when Maks and Val were performing. You have won Dancing with the Stars twice - while Maks has only won it once. Does that cause tension within the marriage? Peta: [Maks yells something unintelligible from the background] I think it bodes for a lot of fun conversations on my behalf. I do get to make fun of him a little bit. Maks: I don't know if you heard me, but I told Nicola [the publicist] not to let you [News 4U] into the theater. Peta: [Laughs] But, yeah, it's nice to rub it in a little bit. He did have a good win with Meryl [Davis], though. Maks: But tell him where the Mirrorballs are - Vals, yours, mine. Peta: Well, they're all in New Jersey - in our New Jersey home. Maks: They're all in a safe place in our home - so this way I have five [laughs]. On to a safer question... What went through your mind when you were paired with Tommy Chong of Cheech & Chong on Dancing with the Stars? Peta: It kind of went both ways. I feel like I'm the kind of person that cuts straight to the point and when I did hear that I had Tommy Chong, I think I cried [laughs]. Little tears came out, because I was going to be off first - I have the token old man. But when I met him and when we got started, they were some of the most rewarding days of my Dancing with the Stars career. He was probably one of the top two partners that I've ever had in respect to his ability for a 76-year-old man. I mean, he literally crushed the Salsa; he crushed the Viennese Waltz. The Confidential tour looks to be very grueling. How do you prepare yourself physically for so many performances and avoid injuries? Maks: [Laughs] I'm the wrong person to talk about that with. You need to give me two or three hours - that's the time it would take to explain it all. But I'm very much into sports rehab. We just watch what we eat and exercise regularly and train our bodies just like any high-end athlete would. We're going to rehearse until the end of February. By the time the first show comes around on March 19 in Springfield... personally, the goal for me is to open up 100%. It's not like we're going to spend the first five or 10 shows building up momentum. No, no, no. Someone in Missouri is going to see the same show that the end of the tour will see. It has to be that way. We are so grateful for the fact that we even get to do this thing. Whose job requires them to dance? For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com or maksandvaltour.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

Looking ahead... the EPO's "Season of Wonder" is set to go out on a major high note with two highly-anticipated performances in April beginning with The Movie Music of John Williams. Simply the greatest film composer of all time, Williams has produced a career's worth of unforgettable scores for some of the biggest blockbusters of all time, including Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Schindler's List and more. Hearing these iconic pieces live with the full strength of the Orchestra is going to be the perfect lead-up to the final concert of 2018. Called "primitive, passionate and powerful," Carmina Burana ranks as one of the most emotionally-charged scores in music history. WINGS ETC.

Wing joints are a seriously competitive lot. Just watch any Man vs. Food rerun and you’re sure to see a restaurant specializing in the mother of all finger foods. Because of the ubiquity of the format, it takes something special to stand out from the rest of the pack. Our local Wings Etc. location certainly understands this. I sampled four of their 22 wing flavors (19 sauces and three dry rubs). The Hot Barbie - their Hot Buffalo with their literally award-winning barbeque sauce - was a personal favorite, with the tangy Buffalo complementing the sweet BBQ (which recently won Evansville Wingfest’s Best BBQ award). The Sweet Chili Cha-Cha brought a peppery low heat alongside its sweetness, the Major Jerk featured a great Caribbean tangy smokiness with just the right amount of heat on the back end, and the Asian Kick had notes of the savory sweetness of General Tso’s sauce. Regional manager Michelle Offutt highly recommended I try the lime pepper dry rub next time. No sportsbar is complete without a hearty nacho plate. With pulled pork, tomatoes, black olives, jalapenos, lettuce, and a hearty drizzling of barbecue sauce, they prove they can hang with the heavy hitters. Their Bacon Mac ‘N Cheese Quesadilla starts with a basic tortilla, but fills it with cheddar Jack cheese, macaroni, and bacon (hence the name). The Big Nasty burger may be big, but it’s far from nasty in taste. It’s a thick patty piled high with pulled pork, cheddar cheese,

BBQ sauce, and beer-battered onion rings. A chicken salad and a few varieties of a chicken wrap add some lighter fare to the menu. Online ordering gives added ease of placing a carryout order without even having to make a phone call. But that’s not all! Their bar - covered in pictures of local athletes from various sports and charitable functions - features a great selection of craft beers, including offerings from local breweries Tin Man and Carson's, as well as the ever-popular Bell's Two-Hearted Ale (a personal favorite of mine). And an outside patio awaits the live music they’ll be featuring all spring through fall. Although the particular location I visited was in Newburgh, the Evansville, Princeton, Henderson, and Madisonville branches are all under the same management and ownership. No matter which one you choose, you should be guaranteed to find the same great food and service with a decidedly community-centric focus. - Jonathan Gluff Hours: Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm; Fri-Sat 11am-12am; Sun 11am-10pm. IN THE KITCHEN with Chef Amanda Hancock

MARCH MADNESS HOMEMADE PIZZA There’s nothing better than sitting down with your March Madness bracket and your favorite pizza. I’m going to teach you that making your own is better and cheaper than take-out. The good thing about making your own pizza is that you can put anything you want on it! Once you have the dough recipe, you are in charge.

with 6 cups and then you can knead in the last one. Portion out your dough. If you’re doing 8 small pizzas, make them about 8 oz. You can eyeball it to the size you want it. Just remember that it must fit on a pan and not have too many toppings; otherwise, it might not cook all the way through or it might end up a soggy mess.

It’s simply a sheet of fresh tomatoes, salted and peppered, and fresh basil torn over it. Simple and delicious!

This is a basic pizza dough recipe. It will make 8 6-inch pizzas or 2-3 medium sized pizzas.

Try these March Madness homemade pizzas!

Remember the cook time for each pizza will change according to how much “stuff” you put on it. Typically, I like to cook my pizzas on 400F for anywhere from 12-18 minutes. This is the point that you must pull your eyes off the game and check to make sure that your cheese or your toppings aren’t burning. They should come out with a crispy crust and gooey toppings. Just make it taste good!

3 cups cool water 1 Tbsp. active dry yeast 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar 3 Tbsp. olive oil 6-7 cups of Bread flour 1 Tbsp. of salt

That’s it! I mix mine in a Kitchen-Aid mixer, but it’s just as easy to do it by hand - and it's more fun! Once your dough comes together, lay it out onto a floured surface. This is where you might need more flour. Always start

Provel Cheese & Pepperoni: I made 3 small ones to split with friends using Provel cheese, which is a cheese exclusively out of St. Louis that can be found at Schnucks. I just added pepperoni to that because I like the cheese so much. Here I just put a thin layer of sauce down and let the cheese and pepperoni do all the work! Margherita: Then I made a thin crust traditional Margherita pizza. It’s traditional in the colors of the Italian flag with fresh red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil.

ust talking about the event and the money it has raised to date makes organizer Chris Passage choke up. The Lamasco Bar & Grill booking agent created Music Makes a Difference, a fundraiser for Easter Seals, in 2015, but the initial idea goes back seven years or so before that, when Passage was waiting tables at Evansville's west side Pizza Hut. At the time, he was also working for local band JEB and had plenty of contacts in the tri-state's music scene. "It was one of those things where if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself," he says. What he wanted to do was hold a concert in town featuring some of the area's biggest names with proceeds going to help out people with disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, which Passage himself deals with on a daily basis. He just needed the right venue. Though Passage wasn't officially on the Lamasco payroll in 2015, he assisted with shows on occasion and felt just comfortable enough to approach owner Amy Word-Smith with a request to host the inaugural Music Makes a Difference at the popular

Franklin Street bar. Always quick to support the community, she readily agreed. For Passage, what followed next was something akin to an anxiety attack. "Then it was, like, 'oh crap - now what?'" he remarks with a shake of the head, still amused by his naivety. It would take another eight months of planning - along with periodic freakouts - but he managed to corral a pretty impressive lineup for that first event in March of 2016, including Calabash, JEB, Big Ninja Delight and Osiella - all of whom happily played for free. By night's end, the event had raised $1760. Last year's Music Makes a Difference nearly doubled that amount, fueled by a rousing performance courtesy of DJ ZAEDO, a North High School student with Cerebral Palsy. "He inspires me," Passage says while tearing up. "Doctors gave him a 2% chance at a normal life, and he's in the marching band and everything - just kicking butt." What really touched Passage was seeing little kids on top of parents' shoulders, wearing earmuffs but having a great time as ZAEDO rocked the house. "It was really cool - I never would

have imagined it," he says. Back by popular demand, DJ ZAEDO will return for the 3rd annual Music Makes a Difference along with rapper CasOne, The Jangle Sheep, The Love Junkies, Mike Mitchell and Lindsey Williams - a truly amazing lineup of local talent guaranteed to blow the roof off Lamasco. In fact, with the success of the previous two events, Passage is now routinely inundated with requests from area musicians to play the event. "I would love to add everybody on the bill, but there's got to be a cutoff," he says. Even so, the former Pizza Hut server is well on his way to reaching this year's goal of $5000 - and maybe his ultimate dream of receiving a grant to host Music Makes a Difference at the Victory Theatre. But that's a ways down the road yet. For the time being, Passage is all about writing a big, fat check to Easter Seals after the dust settles on March 3. "It's like Christmas for me. But more in the sense that I'm giving presents; I'm able to do something." A $10 donation is requested at the door. For more info, call 812-499-6164. Lamasco Bar & Grill is located at 1331 W. Franklin St. / 812-437-0171.

DOM WIER New waters: Nashville singer/songwriter making waves in Evansville with residency at Ri Ra Irish Pub

"M

y mom moved me down in her Corn Pro trailer," Dom Wier says with a laugh, recounting his relocation to Nashville some years ago. It was the logical next step for the singer/songwriter from southern Illinois with a hint of Neil Young in his voice and an appreciation for the rock and folk leanings of Bob Dylan and Jim Croce and country legends like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. After playing in bands around the St. Louis area for a stretch, Wier, like so many aspiring musicians, headed south for the Music City and the promise of opportunity. It didn't take long to make connections. "I met Nick Autry who's a producer and engineer and has gone on to work with Buddy Guy and Chris Young," he says. "I came into Sound Stage Studios for a couple of days to see what we could get done and we ended up recording ďŹ ve songs." The results, released as the Jaded

Dreamer EP in 2009, got the ball rolling for Wier and eventually led to a second session with Autry. With a nod to the Midwestern sound of John Mellencamp and the Southern rock of Tom Petty, After the Flood was a strong follow-up, displaying real songwriting growth - proof that all the hours spent soaking up the scene at Nashville's famous hotspots like the Bluebird and Commodore Lounge were paying off. But Wier didn't just hang out at all the right places; he also joined NSAI (National Songwriters Association International), subjecting his original material to scrutiny from industry professionals. "When you're new, that's good," he says. "It's like songwriting 101." In the process, he met other Music City hopefuls and even attended a monthly barbeque where prominent Nashville writers would often congregate, including people who had cuts with Montgomery Gentry and Tim McGraw. All the while, Wier was performing acoustically around town and beyond but was itching to get a full band together and tour for real. "I always said I would make a good trucker." In the midst of all the touring, Wier found time to record 2013's Born on the Mississippi EP featuring a song written by the highly respected Americana tunesmith John Moreland. But he's especially proud of New Waters, a recent project born out of a partnership with producer/friend Matthew Miller. Released in January, the four-song collection is gaining serious traction via the single "Doses," a folk-inspired, melodically dark tune that stands as Wier's strongest musical statement to date. The plan is to record six to eight more songs and put out a full-length debut in the summer. Until then, you can catch him right here in Evansville at Ri Ra Irish Pub where Wier has a monthly residency - the result of a good relationship with management and positive reaction from the venue's regulars. As the Nashville transplant's website bio reads, he's "taking the hard won little victories as they come. The future is wide open." Upcoming Ri Ra shows: 3/3, 4/7 & 5/12 Ri Ra Irish Pub is located at 701 NW Riverside Dr. For more info, visit domwier.com

JOE PAPIN Joe's Garage guitarist making transition from covers to originals, looking to inspire with his music

F

or a good seven years, beginning in 2008, Joe's Garage was one of the tri-state's most in-demand cover bands, particularly outside of Evansville in cities like Mt. Carmel and Harrisburg, IL, Fort Branch, IN, and Madisonville, KY. It would take some time to break into the local market and a frequent shuffling of members - but eventually this high-energy rock group that played everything from Blink 182 to Rage Against the Machine started scoring gigs at KC's Time Out Lounge, Doc's Nightclub and other hotspots. Throughout it all, the one constant was guitarist Joe Papin (sidebar: the band name comes from a Frank Zappa album and is not, as many people assumed back in the day, a shout-out to Papin's garage

- easy mistake). A very talented musician and all around nice guy, he kept things running smooth by handling booking, updating the JG website and, of course, scheduling rehearsals. By 2015, Papin was spent and ready for a new direction. "Cover tunes were great, and we loved the fans, but once the night was over, it was over - you didn't inspire anybody," he says. "It was just entertainment." It was after a Joe's Garage Halloween show at O'Brian's in 2015 featuring the lineup of Papin plus Miles Townsend (vocals/guitar), Fred Basset (bass/ vocals) and Ken White (drums/vocals), that Papin decided to pump the brakes and take some time to reflect. His intention was to start writing and recording an album of original material - and fast. But it didn't quite work out that way. "My calculations of how quickly I could do that were way off," he explains, laughing to himself. "I don't know if I have ADD or whatever, but I just can't stop remixing songs." So Papin resorted to plan B: simply releasing two at a time. Just recently, he uploaded both "Buffalo Sun" - a melodic acoustic ballad - and the heavier, electric guitar-charged "Slide" to YouTube. The inherently disparate tracks are a good representation of Papin's musical duality,

showcasing the full range of his writing style. "Getting these songs out was a weight lifted off of my shoulders - they're out there now and done and I can't do anything more with them," he says. For the tech geeks out there, "Buffalo Sun" and "Slide" were recorded using Apple's Logic Pro X program - which Adele reportedly used to create her mammoth hit, "Hello." As Papin rightly points out, "I figure if it's good enough for Adele, it's clearly good enough for me." Before Papin settled down in the tri-state many years ago, he moved back and forth between Los Angeles and Buffalo, NY, playing live at every opportunity. In fact, his LA band Diesel Sunshine came within a whisper of a major label signing. Even so, he's content to create on his own terms now. But ultimately, Papin hopes to make a connection with his songs. "If you can write music and get it out to people - even if it's not successful - if you get one or two people that it somehow takes them away from their daily grind or out of a dark situation, that's what it's really about." For more info, follow Joe Papin Music on Facebook.

THE WRITE STUFF

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ABUSE?

Honoring each other’s humanity seems to be a challenge these days. In my tradition (and in the traditions of many others), we see humankind as being “created in the image of God.” Don’t sweat the language. What it means is that every human being is valued and treasured and should be respected and honored. Over the past months, we have heard story after story of people who abuse and assault others. In many of these cases, a person of power inappropriately exploits that power for their own gratification. The victims are afraid to speak up and suffer in silence. But many have begun speaking out. The #metoo movement has opened our eyes to how widespread and insidious this behavior has been. Across the country, victims of sexual assault, misconduct, and abuse are finding their voices and speaking their truth. It is time for churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious communities to increase their efforts in caring for victims. First, we must be vigilant in identifying and prosecuting those within our own communities who have practiced misconduct. Second, we must offer care and healing to those awakening to their woundedness. Religious communities of every kind must put into action the teaching central to all of our traditions: love God and love neighbor. This can be a moment of great awakening and compassion. If you are a victim, there are people who will stand with you. Reach out to us and we will walk this road together. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

March 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

with Jonathan Gluff Another Facebook Rant (Or “Sociopathic Media”) I've mentioned before that I love to root for underdogs. The Eagles recently beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, and even though I couldn't care less about Sportsball™, that did make me happy. I love when expectations are defied, and in the spirit of defying expectations, I've been working on changing my notoriously unsunny disposition. I was talking with my brother-in-law and one of our friends this last weekend about the absurdity that is social media. Sure, it’s an easy target, but it’s true - it seems these platforms are largely responsible for fomenting outrage and angst towards our fellow citizens. One needs to look no further than a controversial tweet from a celebrity/ politician (although the line between the two was blurred long ago) or the comments section

on a public Facebook news article (aka where human decency and civil discourse go to die), Twitter thread, or YouTube video to see just how bad the situation has become. I truly understand why it’s so easy to get bent out of shape at ignorant comments; after all, I’ve not traditionally been one to shy away from an online argument. It can be especially frustrating to see someone arguing an untenable position when you clearly have a much better knowledge of the subject than they do (e.g. anti-vaxxers vs. anyone with a cursory understanding of chemistry), but is it really worth it? And that’s where I’ve found myself lately. Neither I nor anyone else is likely to change another’s mind, especially given the anonymization inherit to the internet.

Online bickering is as productive as repeatedly banging your head against the wall; in fact, that may be more productive, since the results are consistent. So why engage in it? Isn’t it just easier to scoff - with or without a smug sense of over-inflated self worth - and look the other way? So I’ve been taking my own advice on this subject. As a result, I’m finding I get along better with everyone, not just on social media, and my patience in day-to-day life has increased drastically. It’s amazing the amount of stress social media can inflict when we allow it to have power over us. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a great tool for keeping in touch with friends and family members the world over, but it’s a double-edged sword that will cut deeply if it isn’t handled with care.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD...

with Johnny Fletcher

Bifocal Bias This one goes out to all you "four eyes" out there. Specifically, all the poor fools like me walking around with bifocal glasses. Maybe "six eyes" is more accurate. Either way, it's not a compliment. No, sir. Sadly, 2018 marks 30 years now that I've been saddled with this optical affliction and no doubt many of you can relate, even if not for that long a stretch of time. Seems like just yesterday that my childhood eye doc (R.I.P.) casually remarked, "Well, Johnny, it looks like your vision needs a little extra help." Really? I thought my view of the world was pretty spoton. Sure, I couldn't see the increasingly faster pitches coming at me at baseball practice nearly as well as the previous season, but otherwise, no complaints. Didn't matter, though, because that eye doc of mine was busy doing some

detailed measurements on the lenses of the glasses that I almost never wore. He hovered over me, staring intently, calculating... and then delivered the death blow, uttering the phrase that would haunt me for decades to come: "I'm prescribing you bifocals." Dear god. No. If I had a dollar for every time that someone noticed the "extra help" at the bottom of my lenses over the years - and felt the need to point it out with unnecessary incredulity ("You have BIFOCALS???") - I'd be a rich man in my old age. Imagine the accrued interest at this point. Or maybe I could have just saved it all and invested in our booming stock market. Money aside, I'm here to say that we are just like you. And by "we," I mean all the "six eyes"

that you so mercilessly mock for being visionimpaired. Hey, we put our pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else and try our best to make it in this world despite seeing things a little differently. The strain, the strain. The moral of this story is, don't pre-judge someone by the shape of their lenses. Instead, try walking a mile in our shoes - or, more specifically, looking through two different sets of magnification all day long. It's not particularly enjoyable, is it? So, what do you say? Let's put an end to Bifocal Bias. Once and for all. What's that?? What did you just call me?! Another day, another dollar.

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

SENATE CANDIDATE AT PIE PAN Campaign season is upon us, and the Indiana primaries are in full swing. This is what brought Congressman Todd Rokita to the Pie Pan in Evansville on February 10. The popular First Avenue establishment is no stranger to political candidates. Ted Cruz came there when he was running for president in 2016. Rokita, who has served as Indiana's Secretary of State and is currently a congressman, is in a three man race to try and take on incumbent Joe Donnelly in the November general election. When he got to my table, I asked him about the report in the Indianapolis Star that claims he mistreats his staff. Rokita gave the politician's response, so I pressed him further. "I don't know what allegations you're talking about," he responded and moved on. However, the event did reveal the GOP's campaign strategy: to run as pro-Trump and anti-establishment. After the Democrats passed Obamacare, they tried to run away from both Obama and that bill. While we keep hearing about a "Democratic wave" this November, they might not want to count their chickens just yet. Rokita's campaign slogan is "Defeat the Elite" which is comparable to Trump as the antiestablishment candidate. But for Rokita, it will be hard to call himself an outsider considering he's been in state and national politics for almost two decades. GOP primary voters will have to decide if he's the man who can best defeat Donnelly. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

"SCORNED AT THE SALTON SEA" A Short Story By John Thurgood

I had never seen the Salton Sea, so my brother Greg took

me out there one weekend, because he said he knew a good place to camp nearby. We could walk along the

water, wander through some of the abandoned hotels, then hike out to the hills before the sun set to camp

in the chaparral. We didn't see the witch until about noon, at least that's what Greg called her. She dressed in a long white tee shirt, and had hair that tangled in a

mess of large curls past her shoulders, blond strands catching in the breeze along the mock sea shore. Greg

was the first to see her. We were on the roof of a hotel

that at one time was called The Pink Lagoon. I saw him staring, and followed his line of sight out to the gravel-

littered beach where the witch was standing barefoot, looking directly at us.

The next morning, Greg was a toad. I opened his tent, and there he was, looking just as surprised as I must have. “Skee-her,” he said. And I agreed. “You really did

it this time.” He had gotten into it with the witch before, sending long, emotionally driven emails to a server in the netherworld. I thought it was pretty cool, my older brother dating a witch, but when they broke up suddenly, he didn't like to talk about it much.

I put my brother in a paper sack, and packed up all our

gear. On the drive home, I set Greg on the dashboard. “Skee-her,” he said. “Skee-her,” he added, a little impatiently. “I know, I know,” I told him, unsure of what

I could possibly know that would reassure my brother, the toad. When we got home, I cleaned out an old

terrarium I found in the garage, and placed him inside with some pebbles and water. “Skee-her,” he said, and I nodded, knowingly. At the pet store I asked what

toads normally ate, and they sold me some crickets, which I fed to Greg every day for the next two weeks. Eventually, the tank filled with crickets. Greg wouldn't eat them. Until one day, I awoke to find him belly up in the water, a morbid lily pad for a handful of crickets.

NEWS4U MARCH 2018 | FILM REVIEWS

THE RITUAL ENTERTAINMENT ONE After striking a shortcut through a dense, rugged and ever vast forest in Sweden, a group of vacationing Brits find they're not alone. They've trespassed on Pagan land, and as they stumble deeper into the woods, they are met with threats that are not just external but internal as well. The Ritual is a supernatural horror film that borrows a lot from Dario Argento. The influence can be seen in the long rising jib shots, lush stills and the steady pans and zooms that give this film a slow ride into the mind of its characters. The inciting incident happens well before their trip to the forest, on a night out drinking together, holding onto what tenuous thread of their childhood friendship they have left. A layer of guilt washes over them, hitting them in varying degrees, which gives their hamfisted brotherly sojourn the added meaning it needs. They meet a series of trials physical and mental, failing in ways that make their journey seem hopeless from the start. The arc of this film manages to turn from light to dark so drastically it walks the spectrum for horror from the witty banter of an Edgar Wright/Simon Peg spoof to the horror porn of Eli Reed, but unlike the unforgivable gore of the latter, The Ritual's richness shows in the delicate balance between careless spectacle and crafted suspense. - John Thurgood

A FUTILE AND STUPID GESTURE PRINCIPATO-YOUNG ENTERTAINMENT

As one would guess, the biopic about the mastermind behind National Lampoon, one of America's most infamous humor magazines and production companies, is full of quippy one-liners and whip smart retorts that would make even the quippiest and whip smart group of friends pale in comparison. The first half of the film feels like what it might be like to peer into the writers' room of 30 Rock or Parks & Rec, because unlike the 1970's period setting, clothing and pipe smoke, much of the comedy feels rich with relevancy. Doug Kenney, played by Will Forte, turns to comedy in order to the fill the void left by his distant father and meek mother, but his daddy issues are not truly at the fore of this film. The focus instead turns toward his privilege as a white male Harvard graduate with an infinite well of potential talent in the form of writers from all over the country, New York to Los Angeles, to pull from. The true joke is that he has no real dramatic turn on which to pivot. The mistakes he makes seem inconsequential and the risks he takes are hardly breathtaking. His bad behavior parades through each era of his life like a ticking time bomb, but since Kenney's actual life never met the kind of end male chauvinism truly deserved from that era, the film looks instead toward the metaphysical for its plot points and ends with the surreal, a kind of subversive reveal in its own right.- John Thurgood

BLUES WITH BRAGIN CURTIS SALGADO & ALAN HAGER Rough Cut Alligator Records After first playing together in 2003, legendary musicians Curtis Salgado and Alan Hager team up for Rough Cut. Opening track “I Will Not Surrender" sounds like a Delta blues song with Hager trading in the traditional acoustic guitar for an electric. Salgado’s vocals contain a touch of melancholy while singing about not giving up during tough times.“One Night Only” features a great combination of Salgado’s harmonica playing and Hager’s guitar work, plus a guest appearance from Jim Pugh on piano that keeps the song flowing together well. A cover of the blues classic “Morning Train” features a duet between Salgado and special guest LaRhonda Steele. The soulful vocal performance from these two balances their talents nicely. “Hell in a Handbasket,” a Salgado original, addresses the failures of his life as well as the troubles of the world. It also features Salgado’s magnificent piano skills - which beg for a more prominent place on the album, but this is all that Rough Cut offers. The Hager written tune “The Gift of Robert Charles” begins with a classic country inspired slide guitar solo. This instrumental truly showcases the very best of Hager’s talent. - Paul Bragin

TINSLEY ELLIS Winning Hand Alligator Records Prolific musician Tinsley Ellis returns with Winning Hand on Alligator Records, his first album with the label since 2015’s Tough Love and the follow up to 2016's Red Clay Soul from the Heartfixer Music label. Opening track “Sound of a Broken Man" begins with a blistering riff from Ellis. The lyrics discuss lost love with some introspection on what went wrong. This contrasts nicely with his excellent guitar playing, including some work in the second half of the song reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix. Like the first track, “Gamblin’ Man” features lyrics that deal with a woman who left. This song is a slow waltz ballad with more of a Texas blues style guitar. “Kiss This World” jumps out of the gate with more superb guitar playing that shines through at various times in the song. The lyrics lament the state of the world today with the thought of leaving it all behind.“Satisfied” also deals with the sorry condition of modern society; however, the message is delivered with an upbeat tempo and Kevin McKendree’s solid piano playing adds a very nice touch. For more info, visit tinsleyellis.com or facebook.com/tinsleyellis - Paul Bragin A Case of the Blues is on Saturdays from 11am-6pm on 91.5-FM WUEV and online at wuev.org.

DAVID DUCHOVNY Every Third Thought Westbound Kyd I was surprised to find out The X-Files’ David Duchovny had recently released a rock album, let alone to find out it’s his sophomore effort. Then I learned the album came not from a long-time desire to make music, but from him simply picking up a guitar and learning it a few years ago. Every Third Thought feels like a first draft, like a placeholder. It reminds me of whenever a movie has a father figure character who also has a band “with the guys” that performs every now and then to pad out time. The songs are simplistic, easy to remember, and are dangerously close to William Shatner-styled talk-singing for fear of hurting the actor’s voice during long recording sessions. To call what Duchovny is doing “singing” is to stretch the definition of the art. He’s rhythmically talking over music. Considering the fact this album doesn’t even have a cursory Wikipedia page and it’s published under a boutique label created by Duchovny himself (named after his son Kyd), it’s quickly apparent Every Third Thought is the musical equivalent of a self-published novel: it’s more for the person who created it than for public consumption. - Gavin Gaddis

FALL OUT BOY Mania Island Records Fall Out Boy is back, only two years after their previous album, and they’ve delivered something wonderful titled Mania. After listening to this album three times through I find myself in the rare position of only having two pieces of constructive criticism. First, and most importantly, the first song of the album features a chorus in which the vocalist uses an Alvin and the Chipmunksesque high pitch voice modulation. I can’t fathom why this was considered a good idea as the final product drills into one’s brain in the same fashion as the whine of a dentist’s drill. Secondly, while I’ve had a lot of fun listening to the album, I’ve clocked three hours with it and still can’t recall a single song title off the top of my head. There are many good songs on the album that are fun Fall Out Boy songs to listen to, but somehow, they’re so Fall Out Boy they have trouble finding purchase in one’s memory alongside the dozens of other songs they’ve put out over the years. As an overall product, Mania is a fun album, but it lacks a certain oomph factor that could’ve made it a great album. - Gavin Gaddis

NEWS4U MARCH 2018 | MUSIC REVIEWS

AWOLNATION Here Come the Runts Red Bull Records From the perspective of someone whose only experience with AWOLNATION is the internet meme popularity of singles like "Run" and "Sail," Here Come the Runts comes as a pleasant surprise. This collection of alt-rock songs does something no other album I’ve reviewed has the chutzpa to try: it takes risks. Funky instrument combinations, odd musical choices - Runts embraces the alternative side of alt-rock. In a market flooded with same-y sounding acts producing same-y sounding material every few years, albums like this truly stand out. Having gone back and listened to some of the discography, Runts has what AWOLNATION has established as their sound, but with the caveat that their sound includes weird choices. This is the best kind of album: a collection of songs that are all easily identifiable as that band’s music. Concept albums can be fun, but these days they seem to be used more and more as a crutch to string same-y songs together for an hour with one single produced for radio consumption. In the same way it’s nearly impossible for one to emulate They Might Be Giants due to their inherently experimental style, AWOLNATION’s inherent sound can be found in Here Come the Runts. - Gavin Gaddis

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE Man of the Woods RCA Records Justin Timberlake may have brought sexy back, but he’s not bringing much to the table with Man of the Woods. Pulling from a childhood spent growing up in Tennessee, this album seeks to be Timberlake’s more southern-influenced work. With no real breakout popular singles or celebrity guests beyond Alicia Keys, this album is more focused on becoming greater than the sum of its parts. My main issue with Man of the Woods is the same issue that comes up with a lot of big-name artists: a good chunk of the songs are just blah Justin Timberlake songs. One could randomly insert them into any other album of his career and they wouldn’t sound out of place, even with Timberlake’s supposed southern thesis that spans the whole album. The music does show some nice influence from classic country and R&B, but in the end it’s an album of Timberlake sounding like Timberlake but with the occasional mention of rural things. Simply talking about being outside a lot and plopping Chris Stapleton onto a song does not a compelling “southern” album make. - Gavin Gaddis

VINILOVERSUS Days of Exile Altamira Artists Viniloversus have been a staple of the Latin American alternative scene for over a decade, but after receiving back-to-back Latin Grammy nominations, they decided they had reached the cap of their success in their home country, Venezuela. Thus, after a relocation to Miami, their first English-language album was born. Days of Exile is a testament to its name, with songs like “Broken Cities” making it clear that moving to the U.S. was more than a step towards breaking into the English-speaking mainstream: It was a journey away from a hometown that is collapsing. But Viniloversus refuse to let Venezuela’s situation drag them down, and include several less political tracks on Days of Exile. “Show Me the Money” is loud, fun, and can build up a crowd regardless of whether that crowd speaks English, and “Hey Mama (The Bill Murray Song)” is a Latin American take on Nashville’s instrumentation. Finally, “So Many Stars” captures the wonder, mystery, and gratitude that staring at the night sky and considering one’s place within it can elicit. With these songs, I wouldn't be surprised if Viniloversus found the same success in the U.S. that they found in Latin America. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.

BORN ANIMAL Celebration Revolution Self-Released Born Animal crafted an EP in Celebration Revolution that manages to infuse an alternative sound with their Nashville country roots, without drifting into the realm of country rock (for the most part). The band’s vocals are certainly southern-inspired and may tend to favor accent over power, but when combined with the electric guitar hooks and powerful drum riffs alternative fans have grown to love, the EP is undoubtedly of the college rock genre. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the instrumentation is completely free of genre oversteps. There are a few moments where Celebration Revolution drifts from sounding like countryinspired college rock to sounding like college rock-inspired country. “Middle Man” is a bit of a sour opening to the EP, with its combination of acoustic strumming, drawling vocals, and (of course) organ confusing the listener as to whether they are hearing an alternative EP or a country rock EP. Luckily, Celebration Revolution delivers on its promise of college rock more and more as it progresses, concluding on a high note with the power-rock track “Snake Eyes.” As the band develops, their sound will hopefully find its niche. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr. MARCH BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. ELYSIAN SPLIT SHOT

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

It’s pretty obvious by its name what this beer is. It pours up very dark brown with a short, thick beige head and a subtle amount of lacing throughout the enjoyment process. Once in the glass it’s totally opaque. Its nose is upfront with coffee and dark roasted malts. It even smells smooth. Could I be smelling the lactose? The taste doesn’t present any big surprises and that’s just fine because it’s all good. Dark roasted malts, coffee, moderate hops, and a milky smoothness that makes for an excellent mouthfeel. Those characteristics make this brew a great candidate for a “first stout” experience. Stouts aren’t for everyone but try it - you might like it.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A decent tan head grows on this beer after pouring it into an English pub glass. Roasted scents from the coffee and malt control the nose, with some sweetness in the end. The roasted flavors remain with the first sip of the beer, followed by more sweetness and the return of coffee flavors in the long finish. This would work well as a breakfast beer. Stout beer aficionados should try this spring seasonal while they can.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

This is a nice chocolate-colored beer. It has a great coffee aroma. I like the rich coffee and smooth chocolate stout flavor. Unlike some stouts, this one really doesn't fill me up as bad as others and I will have to get more of this. I have had other offerings from Elysian, but this one is the best.

Like its name, this one is stripped down and devoid of any pretense. It makes no attempt to hide its nature as a straightforward-as-they-come oatmeal stout, and that’s by no means a bad thing. With a touch of yeasty goodness on the nose and malty richness on the finish, it’s both refreshing and robust. With a flavor complex enough to appeal to the craft crowd but smooth enough to satisfy a casual quaffer, it’s definitely one to keep an eye out for.

The smooth taste of this “whiskey barrelaged Belgian-style dark strong ale” (quite the mouthful, eh?) belies its boozy 11.2% alcohol content. It forms a thick, amber head with even the most careful of pours, which quickly dissipates to a nice, creamy consistency. The sweet-but-not-too-sweet notes of cherry complement rather than overpower, and it sits nicely on the back of the palate. Whiskey barrel aging has been all the rage in craft brewing for quite some time, and if you’ve yet to try one, this is a great brew to start with.

A thick tan head rests on this opaque black stout when poured into an English pub glass. A decent amount of sweetness from the oatmeal first hits the nose, followed by roasted malt. The balance of oatmeal and roasted malt stays while drinking the beer and the roasted malt lasts a long time in the finish. Pair it with sweet potatoes, aged Cheddar cheese, chicken in mole sauce or flourless chocolate cake.

A thick and slightly tan head forms on this dark brown ale after pouring it into a tulip glass and stays for a long time. A significant sweet scent from the bourbon barrel aging fills the nose. The sweetness and cherry notes continue with the first sip of the beer and stays in the finish. Bourbon fans will definitely want to try this one. Pair it with hearty stew, steak or chocolate covered cherries.

This is a dark black beer with decent carbonation. It has that decent coffee flavor that most stouts do but the intensity of the flavor is lacking. I have looked at this one at the store before, but this is the first time I have tried it. The flavor is smooth but it doesn't quite measure up to the Elysian Split Shot.

This is a cloudy, amber-colored beer. I can smell the bourbon immediately. I'm not a big fan of the bourbon beers but I really like this one. I'm also not a bourbon aficionado by any means but the flavor is pretty smooth. It has an 11.2% ABV and with that kind of number, I usually find those beers a little hard to drink but this one is not a problem in that regard.

SAMUEL ADAMS SAM '76 head that fades away post-haste. Its aroma includes a slight ale-like citrus fruitiness. The taste echoes the nose with a very subtle ale-like bite. That's about it. There is no complexity or dimension and the mouthfeel is light and watery. If you prefer your beers light (watery) and understated, this could be your favorite. You decide.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head crowns this hazy golden beer and never totally evaporates. Despite the low hop count in the beer, the scent Sam Adams says that they’ve hybridized seems to balance between malt and hops. JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a hazy, straw-colored beer with good carbonation. It has a slight, crisp hops flavor and is very refreshing. I consider this one of Sam Adam’s best beers. It's like a very light IPA as it has that piney grapefruit flavor but just not as strong.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

NEWS4U MARCH 2018 | WINE REVIEWS

Walter the Wine Guy Are there any bargains in the store? I’ve been in this business for a long time and here is one thing I have noticed: older vintages can be a true bargain if you know what you are looking for. Now, many of you have gotten into the habit of just buying the familiar, or in many cases, the cheapest, and just overlook the higher end of the selection. Let me give you an example of what I am talking about. I walked into a liquor store and was looking at the wines they offered. I noticed they had Caymus Special Selection at $116.99 a bottle. Knowing the going price of this wine, I realized the price was two dollars over cost! This wine normally sells for $175.99 so there is a considerable savings, and it was an older vintage, so it was closer to a “drinkable” age! So let me tell you what wines to look for and what should make your wallet happy. First, and most important, WHO made the wine? There are some wineries that are just “rockstars” in the business. For chardonnay, you have Chalk Hill, Chateau Montelena, and Rombauer. If you read the label, there is one word you are looking for: ESTATE. This means the grapes are grown and tended by the estate and are the best of their

92 |

offerings. Now, some of these wineries have a second tier that is produced by grapes they buy on contract and will be cheaper than their estate wines, so you have to know what the label says.

Another “no-brainer” wine that ages wonderfully is a well made cabernet sauvignon. If you see an older vintage of Joseph Phelps Insignia, Heitz Cellars Napa Valley, Caymus Special Selection, or Shafer Hillside Select, these wines are for your cellar now matter how old they are. Let me qualify that. If they are older than 1997, then you can probably drink them now. If they are 1999 or younger, you can hold them for a few more years. Cabernet sauvignon, made well, is designed to hold for decades, so an older vintage is probably going

CHARDONNAY

"If you read the label, there is one word you are looking for: ESTATE. This means the grapes are grown and tended by the estate." Chardonnays from these wineries have the potential for aging so if you find an older vintage of these, buy more than one, because you will be shocked by how much better an older chardonnay tastes compared to the current vintage. Just as an example I have a 2012 chardonnay in my cellar aging right now; I bought 12 so I am committed to drinking this wine for years!

to be a great purchase. Another red wine that you should be on the lookout for is Australian shiraz, namely, Penfold’s Grange, d’Arenburg Dead Arm, and other wines from the Barossa Valley. In the case of Penfold’s Grange, it is recommended to drink in 20 to 30 years after vintage! I have a 1997 Grange, and it is a wine that I may have to drink on my deathbed!

AUSTRALIAN SHIRAZ

" In the care of Penfold's Grange, it is recommended to drink in 20 to 30 years after vintage!"

So now you are armed with a few wines to look out for. Please be aware these wines will have some sediment due to the aging process; so don’t be alarmed, this is normal. My personal recommendation is to purchase a carafe. This will allow you to aerate the wine to coax out the subtle flavors and to soften the tannins. Another tip you might consider, if you are going to drink an older vintage wine: if it is a red wine, stand the bottle up for a day or two to allow the sediment to settle on the bottom. Because if you open the wine after jostling it around, the sediment will cloud the wine and it will have stuff in the bottom of the glass! There you go! This is just enough information to get you into the deepest reaches of liquor stores to find those hardto-get expensive wines that are considered legendary. I really need to inform you that I have left Liquor Locker. I would like to thank you all for reading the articles I have been writing for a couple years now, and I sincerely hope that you have gotten a tip or two. This has truly been a blast for me and has really made me learn about the wines I have mentioned in these articles. I am on to another challenge and hope to see you in the market. To be fair to my former employer, I will not mention where I am going, because this was made possible by their efforts. I may be able to do this in the future, time will tell. But for now let me tell you all... Pour, Swirl, Smell, Sip, Enjoy.
