L-R: Joel Murray, Jeff B. Davis, Greg Proops, Ryan Stiles
WHOSE LIVE ANYWAY? V I CT ORY T H EAT R E | A PR I L 18 | 7 P. M.
Comedian Greg Proops on working with Ryan Stiles, ignoring requests for hoedowns, putting out fires and more
20 years ago this August, Whose Line Is It Anyway? made its American TV debut on ABC, becoming an instant favorite with fans of improv comedy thanks to the quick wit of cast members Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles - all of whom first appeared on the original British series that premiered in the late 1980s. Over the course of the show's lengthy run (a reboot now airs on The CW), recurring guests have been brought on board to flesh out the increasingly wacky skits and songs, including comedians Jeff B. Davis and Greg Proops. Along with Styles and writer/director/actor Joel Murray, together they make up the traveling show that is Whose Live Anyway? - a wild and endlessly entertaining stage version of the hit TV series. Be prepared for full-on audience participation when this wonderfully unpredictable improv tour hits Evansville. Or as Proops likes to say, "my joke is always that if the show sucks, it's your fault."
Considering the spontaneous nature of the show, do the four of you need to prepare in any certain way prior to hitting the stage? No, we've been on the road so long together and know each other so well. Joel's been in the group for six years, and he's the new guy. Jeff's been in the group for 15 years and he was the new guy. And Ryan and I have worked together for almost...we're reaching 28, 29 years. What are the long term effects of working with Ryan Stiles for nearly three decades? Well, he's lovely, isn't he? I'm so lucky to work with someone that funny who's a great improviser. He points at the fences and he hits home runs - the most consistent person that I've ever played with in my life. And he's also a very low-key guy, just a groovy dude. He's kind and stays out of everybody's face. There's no dickswinging on our tour; it's nice. Would he say the same about you? Oh, not at all. I'm loud, you know, and I never shut up. I'm fussy and I'm a primadonna. No, I wouldn't think he'd say the same thing at all. But we get along, you
know, and we have running jokes we've been playing on each other for years. I mean the way I always describe it...it's boring but it's true: we can bounce pass backwards without looking at each other. Of all the quick-witted humor on the show, the improvised songs always stand out, especially considering that you only have a few seconds to come up with something. Yeah, you only have a few seconds to figure out what you're going to do. You know, when we had Chip [Esten] in the group for 15 years, and then Chip got on Nashville...so we got Joel. So, I started singing, taking over Chip's part. Then Ryan after awhile was like, 'I'll sing.' So Ryan and I trade off every night - I don't know who you'll be getting on the night, but Jeff sings every night. Ryan is a really funny singer; he's just great. And he's not known for singing, but everything he puts his hand to up there is gold. So, you don't get cheated with either Ryan or myself - we give a hundred percent. But like I said, we'd never do a hoedown or an Irish drinking song. People yell them out, and Ryan's like, '[bleep] you.' Continues on page 8

Colin Mochrie - whose facial expressions are comedy gold - has logged the most episodes on the TV series but is not part of the traveling show. Have you upset him in some way? [Laughs] The old fellow? Colin and I just did a gig together in Texas a couple weeks ago. We've done the West End in London the last two years; we're going to do it at Christmas time this year - me, Colin, Jeff, Brad [Sherwood], Laura [Hall] Linda [Taylor] and Josie [Lawrence] and Clive [Anderson] are doing the Royal Albert Hall for a couple of nights. So, I do things with Colin every year, just not as much as with the boys. But Colin's got his own duo with Brad. So Colin does a two-hander with Brad, and I sat in with them when we all did a corporate gig in Texas a couple of weeks ago. So, we're all friends. We all hang out with each other; we're just in different groups. And you still find time to go out on your own? I get off on my own all the time. I do a film club with my wife Jennifer here in Hollywood. We're showing Hairspray next week, and I then I fly up to Seattle and do my podcast alone at the Crocodile which is a rock and roll cafe. I did it last year - my booking agent hipped me to it. So, I went back because I really thought it was great. You know, they almost set fire to the club the last time I was there. I was out in the back smoking a joint...and they have this wood burning oven there. So, I see one of the crew come back and put a bunch of embers in a [bleeping] plastic rubber bin. So, I said to one of the people that works there, 'Uh, this thing's on fire.' Well, I am glad that I saw that before my show. I don't give out refunds. I thought I was just going to casually get high before the show and all of a sudden I'm the [bleeping] fire department. But they're nice as can be there. Whether on stage solo or with the boys, it must be nice not to have to censor yourself as opposed to performing in front of the cameras and a studio audience. Right, we don't have to censor ourselves, but we're not very curse-y, anyway. It depends on the venue. If we're at a casino it can get a little filthier. But we would never do an Irish drinking song in a live show, because Ryan [bleeping] hates it - so why would we do anything that he doesn't like? And we're a lot more intimate [with the live show] - we bring people up from out of the crowd. It's a way more interactive affair than the TV show. So you're likely to be pulled on stage if you come to the show which is really fun for us. We bring people up and improvise with them. We do "moving bodies" with people from the audience; we do "sound effects"; we sing songs with people from the audience. So there's all sorts of games that we play with the audience. So, my joke is always that if the show sucks, it's your fault. Because everything we do is going to be based on suggestions from the audience. But the truth is, we're always striving to get a standing ovation - that's what we're in business for. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

GUNS & HOSES XI FOR D CENTER | APRIL 7 | 7 P.M .
Annual charity boxing competition between area first responders deadlocked at 5-all with championship belt on the line In case you missed it, last month we ran a preview of Guns & Hoses XI, featuring an interview with fighters Ryan Conaway and Mike Smith. Now it's almost time for that first bell to ring at the Ford Center as area first responders prepare to battle it out for the 11th time in the name of charity. With the series tied 5-all, all signs point to this being the craziest, most epic event yet - which will hopefully translate to big bucks being raised for local children and people with disabilities in our community. Proceeds from Guns & Hoses go to funding great organizations all over the tri-state, from Ark Crisis Child Care Center to Warrick County Special Olympics and many, many more - over 60 in all (for the full list of beneficiaries, visit 911giveshope.sportngin.com)! Guns & Hoses XI will feature 15 boxing matches, each lasting three rounds. Check out the fight card (subject to change) below which promises some tantalizing matchups, particularly a potential tiebreaking final bout between the EFD's Mike Doran and Jasper Police Officer Martin Loya. WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY O WE N S B OR O C ON VEN T I ON CEN T ER | APRIL 1 7 | 7 :3 0 P.M .
God's problem child: Legendary country star returning to the tri-state with "Trigger" in tow A little over 10 months after performing to an appreciative crowd at the Ford Center, Willie Nelson is headed back to the tri-state for a much-anticipated show at the Owensboro Convention Center. The "Trigger" happy country star (more on that in a moment) is still going strong, having released no less than two books (2015's It's a Long Story: My Life and 2016's Pretty Paper) and four albums over the last three years - a creative pace that artists half his age can't keep up with. God's Problem Child, Nelson's newest collection of songs, debuted at #1 on Billboard's Country album chart and #10 on the Billboard 200, proving that he's still as popular as ever. But you can still expect to hear all the hits at the OCC classic cuts like "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground," "On the Road Again," "Always on My Mind" and "Mammas, Don't Let
Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." And Nelson will play them all with the help of his trusty guitar, "Trigger." Amazingly, this iconic instrument has weathered decades of wear and tear and still holds up despite a rather sizeable hole in its face. Kind of like Willie himself - sans the hole, of course. They both just keep chugging right along, a great musical team if there ever was one. But Nelson also has a great team behind him on stage: The Family. Three members of this first class backing band - pianist Bobbie Nelson, drummer Paul English and harmonicist Micky Raphael - have been along for the ride since the early 70s. The group is rounded out by Billy English and Kevin Smith. Together, Willie Nelson & Family have created a formidable musical partnership - one that's only strengthened over time. Chances are you'll hear a song or two

from Nelson's upcoming studio album, Last Man Standing, to be released on April 27 - 11 new songs described as his "most personal and introspective to date." For those keeping count, the Texas native's discography runs well over 100 albums (consider that his debut appeared in 1962). Which might help to explain why Nelson has such a wide-ranging - and loyal - fanbase. When you become a Willie devotee, you're clearly in it for the long haul. Don't miss out on one of the most anticipated shows of the year! For tickets and more info, visit owensborocenter.com. The Owensboro Convention Center is located at 501 W. 2nd St. in Owensboro, KY.

EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS:
APRIL PERFORMANCES AT THE VICTORY THEATRE
EPO's "Season of Wonder" coming to a powerful, passionate close with epic Classics and Pops concerts
Following on the heels of a very special St. Patrick's Day Celebration featuring film music from Titanic, Braveheart and Far & Away, Maestro Savia and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra will up the ante by taking on the consensus for greatest movie composer of all time in the first of two final concerts for the 2017-18 "Season of Wonder." Eight months of dynamic performances then culminate with Carmina Burana, Carl Orff's emotionally-charged score - a fitting end sure to leave tri-state EPO fans wanting more. The Movie Music of John Williams / April 7 & 8 Long considered the king of big budget soundtracks, composer John Williams has a résumé a mile long. His many successes include the blockbuster hits Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Schindler's List and Catch Me If You Can the majority of which are the result of a fourdecade-long partnership with legendary director Steven Spielberg. In all, Williams has been involved in the soundtracks to over 100 films throughout the course of his incredible 66-year career. And the New York native's sustained excellence has not gone unacknowledged. In fact, Williams is the proud recipient of 24 Grammy Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, five Academy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards - well-deserved kudos for such a giant in his field.

One of the highlights of this highlyanticipated concert is sure to be Music from Lincoln, featuring narration from Dean Dorrell, a life member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters. A seasoned mimic of our 16th president, he has appeared on stage in the one-man play Mr. Lincoln as well as his own Evening with Abraham Lincoln. It all comes to a dramatic conclusion with Williams' most beloved composition: Star Wars. May the force be with the EPO for these two special performances. Times: 4/7 (7 p.m.); 4/8 (2 p.m.) Carmina Burana / April 28 / 7 p.m. Following the Movie Music of John Williams is no easy task, but the passion of German composer Carl Orff's universally-beloved Carmina Burana will undoubtedly take

the EPO's "Season of Wonder" out on a serious high note. A scenic cantata based on 24 poems from a 13th century medieval collection, this emotionally-charged work is divided into four sections, opening and ending with "Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi," often cited as the most well-known/ performed piece. To properly present Carmina Burana in all its musical complexity and edge-of-your-seat drama, Maestro Savia and the EPO are enlisting the help of soprano Lauren Snouffer, tenor Luther Lewis III and baritone José Rubio along with the supremely talented Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and Evansville Children's Choir. Tri-state classical music fans may well be familiar with Lewis, an Evansville native who attended Signature School and has appeared with the Philharmonic on several occasions not to mention sung with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Cincinnati Opera, San Francisco Opera and many others. Get your tickets now for the final performances of the EPO's "Season of Wonder!"

Talk about a hairy photo shoot! Indeed, it was a challenge to direct six dogs of various breeds and sizes to sit still and "smile" for the camera, but photographer Daniel Knight of Studio B Photography handled it like the pro that he is. And the results speak for themselves. Seriously, you won't find more photogenic subjects anywhere in the tri-state - or more excitable, for that matter. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT JEWEL: Jewel - who was hand-picked from a very reputable breeder - goes to work most days at Tracy Zeller Jewelry where she serves as the store's mascot, greeter and guard dog. To make it all official, she has her own business card. Being employed at a pet-friendly store means that Jewel gets lots of visits from other cute fur-babies and never tires of hanging out with customers. At home, she has no shortage of stuffed animals that are all called "baby" and loves to be outside, running and searching for squirrels.
AN AMUSING ANECDOTE: If Zeller and her crew are waiting on a client and Jewel wants to know what's going on, she will scratch at the backs of their legs behind the showcase - which is her way of asking to be placed on top of the displays. The consensus is that Jewel is half-cat.

AGE: 18 months BREED: Pit bull Mix OWNER: Kristi Spalding | Sales & Marketing Mgr. @ Ford Center/Victory Theatre A LITTLE BIT ABOUT TINKERLILLY: Tinkerlilly was adopted from It Takes a Village Canine Rescue. Some of her favorite activities include licking herself and play time at Opie's Doggie Playcare & Salon where Spalding definitely gets her money's worth. Other interests include giving kisses and watching TV - and herself in the mirror. Above all, Tinkerlilly is very educated, having received the title of Canine Good Citizen by the American Kennel Club; in addition, she has participated in obedience classes at every opportunity, reaching advanced levels of training. AN AMUSING ANECDOTE: Tinkerlilly was handpicked to do the "Puck Drop" at a Thunderbolts hockey game this season. Despite being scared of the dark and loud noises, she did great in the build-up but when time came for the big moment, the sight of two hockey players skating towards the center of the ice - right at her, effectively - sent T-Lilly running for the hills. As Spalding tells it, "she pucked up."

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WILLIE: Willie is a rescue dog from a bad situation who absolutely loves to swim - hands down, his favorite activity. Not surprisingly, he enjoys being out on the river on a boat and occasionally drinks a little beer when all the guys are out having fun on a sunny afternoon. Actually, that sounds more like Brady, but nevertheless. All kidding aside, Willie's a very sweet dog deservedly living the good life these days after a rough start.
AN AMUSING ANECDOTE: Last summer, Willie succeeded in digging up Brady's entire backyard in a relentless - and ultimately fruitless search for moles. It reportedly looked like a series of moon craters. Also, Brady once brought Willie into the Timeout Lounge at 2:30 a.m. - and got in trouble for it, naturally. But the dog had a blast running wild through a weekend crowd of about a thousand.

Weighing in at an impressive 135 lbs, he loves to take Jeep rides - especially with the top down. Hank also enjoys going on walks and hikes and just being outside, particularly during the winter when it snows. Working's family has a place down by Lake Barkley which gives this big guy plenty of room to run around and chase deer. At home, Hank has his own dog bed but much prefers to sleep with Working, hogging the covers and much of the mattress, as giant animals tend to do. AN AMUSING ANECDOTE: Despite Hank's imposing size, he's reportedly scared of his own shadow - and construction barrels. Simply refuses to go near them. Furthermore, he often hides in the bathtub when Working is not home. If she can't find him upon returning, that's where he'll be.

This adorable puppy just learned how to swim and particularly enjoys chewing on antler bones. When Lincoln's not busy retrieving or chewing on said bones, he sleeps. It's all in a day's work.
AN AMUSING ANECDOTE: Hendrickson recently got back from a trip to Atlanta for a conference and had to stop by the kennel to pick up Lincoln. In fact, to this day, people often say, 'If your dog ever comes up missing, we took him home with us.' But Broco isn't going anywhere - he's got a great life at Studio B.

Award-winning, locally-owned company continues to improve customer service and selection Nearly three decades after opening its first store in Newburgh, Pet Food Center continues to serve the needs of tri-state pet owners, having expanded along the way to include three Evansville locations plus operations in Owensboro, KY, and Clarksville, TN. This locally-owned company is run by a dedicated crew of animal lovers that strives to not only provide the very best products for your pets (over 6000 different items!) but give back to the community through support of local rescue shelters and participation in fundraisers. It's not surprising then, that Pet Food Center has been awarded the Evansville Courier & Press Readers' Choice Platinum Award seven times for Selection & Service. And now Pet Food Center's selection and service have gotten even better with the development of their shopping cart - improved to compete against Amazon, Chewy, and other online retailers. According to PFC's Michael Stepto, customers will now have the store's full inventory plus the inventory of manufacturers at their disposal. Translation: If an item is not in stock at the store, it will come directly from another source. "The key is to get the product to the customer so they can just go to one place and get what they need," Stepto says. "Even in store, if somebody wants a particular product and we don't have it in stock - we may have

the brand but not that particular widget, if you know what I mean - we can go to our online store and order it for them. Or they can go to our online store and have it shipped right to their house." In addition, all stores offer local delivery for lawn & garden items, etc. - something that the company hasn't really advertised in the past but is now looking to promote in an effort to serve customers better. And to that end, the company has plans for a new store in Paducah, KY, and other Indiana locations in 2018 with the intent of making their incredible selection of products and various services available to as many tri-state pet owners as possible. Speaking of services, keep in mind that Pet Food Center offers grooming on site while you shop, plus dog tags, nail trimming, wing clipping and more. Other services include self-service pet wash for only $9.99 and dog training. Everything that you need to keep your furry friends happy and healthy is available at the tri-state's most trusted place for all things pet-related. *Attention local rescue shelters: Pet Food Center welcomes adoption events at any location. Just contact a store manager for available dates & times.

"UnLeash Your Inner Hero" and support homeless animals at the VHS's biggest fundraiser Talk about good timing. This year, the Vanderburgh Humane Society's biggest annual fundraiser falls on National Super Hero Day - which lines up perfectly with the theme of the event, "UnLeash Your Inner Hero." Yes, the 23rd edition of Going, Going, Gone to the Dogs is all about the power of our furry friends and just how important they are to the community. But as always, the VHS needs your help to ensure that the area's homeless animals receive proper care and attention and, ultimately, the opportunity to find a forever home. Keep in mind that the organization is not granted any tax-based funding - all expenses to keep the shelter up and running are paid through generous donations from the public. That's why the Going, Going, Gone to the Dogs Benefit Dinner & Auction is such a big deal. In fact, the auction typically nets over $60,000 each year which helps to offset the costs of electricity, medical care, staffing and more. But while the focus is fundraising, the event is guaranteed to be fun for the whole family - not stuffy like some galas can be. And best of all, adoptable animals will make a special appearance so be prepared for all kinds of cuteness and the possibility that you'll find a new best friend during the evening! But even if there's not room at home for another animal, you can still help out by donating items for the auction - just about anything valued at $25+: baskets, gift cards & gift certificates, services, artwork, jewelry, vacation packages, sports memorabilia, antiques and more (to donate, email events@vhslifesaver.org). Individuals begin at $75 per plate, with benefactor tickets available at $125 and corporate tables of 10 at $1250. Tickets will not be sold at the door. To reserve tickets, visit vhslifesaver.org. The Holiday Inn Evansville Airport is located at 7101 US Hwy 41 N.

(812) 853-9352 Newburgh grooming business dedicated to making your pets feel AH-MAZ-ING Recently I was talking with someone and they asked where I work. I own Groomingdales Pet Spa, I told her, I’m a dog groomer! She continued that she had a boxer and they didn’t need to be groomed. I talked her into bringing her big lug in for a professional grooming. Skeptical, she accepted my offer with a $5 coupon. She dropped off that silly, butt wagging, snorting beast and we began our magic. Our shampooer pressurizes the water and shoots oxygen and soap way down to the follicle for a deep cleansing you just can’t get at home, leaning over the bathtub, killing your back. Our cream rinse isn’t just the $5 stuff at the local pet store; our after spray is AH-MAZ-ING; we don’t charge extra for dremelling nails; our brush and blow-dry process rids your pet of shedding hair and dry skin particles, and the ears are scrubbed so good they are squeaky clean. And yes, we even do the glands during bath time. Lastly, we add a bandana and a spray of breath freshener; that is sort of like the cherry on top. There's the whole enchilada for a short haired dog! Does your pup need groomed even though it’s short haired? I think so! The owner was so impressed she has texted me twice to tell me how good her silly bean feels and is in awe of how long the after spray has lasted. Smells great, feels sleek, happy, waggin’ and life is good! - Angie Stanley Book online with us at Groomingdaleswoof.com and make your pet the next Groomingdales Rock Star!

NEWS4U APRIL 2018 | WHAT'S COOKIN'
ZAXBY'S
8175 HIGH POINTE DRIVE | NEWBURGH, IN | 812-490-1199
Zaxby’s is a name that’s well-known throughout the south. While it’s been specializing in all things chicken since 1990, the franchise has only moved into our area within the past two years (the Evansville location opened in mid-2016, and the Newburgh location opened in early September 2017). I recently stopped by the Newburgh location to try out a few of their offerings. I started with the Buffalo Dip & Tater Chips from their Zappetizers menu. The titular chips are thinly-sliced, lightly-seasoned potatoes fried to a slight crispiness without being too crunchy; the dip consists of their Buffalo sauce, cheese, and chicken shredded to a fine consistency akin to chicken salad. It makes for a nice marriage of sweet and tangy flavors, with just a hint of spice subtle enough to not overheat even the most sensitive of palates. Next up was their Wings & Things Combo. Consisting of three fried chicken fingers, five Buffalo wings (either traditional or boneless), a thick slice of Texas toast, crinkle-cut fries, celery, and a dipping cup of both ranch and their signature Zax Sauce, it’s a formidable amount of food for a very unformidable price. There are plenty of sauces to choose from that range from mild to vendetta-against-your-tongue hot. The fries have the same seasoning as the Tater Chips, and don't fall victim to the sogginess that crinkle cut fries are prone to. Using the same descriptor twice is something I am loathe to do, but the Zax Sauce simply can’t be described without the word “tangy.” A creamy concoction with notes of black pepper and Worcestershire, it complements their chicken fingers well.

On the lighter side of things, they do offer salads (or “Zalads,” as is their parlance). I sampled the Cobb Salad, where chopped hard-boiled eggs, onion straws, bacon, cucumbers, tomatoes, and cheese adorned a bed of lettuce and grilled chicken (fried is also an option). Nine different dressings are available to appeal to all tastes. Conveniently located right off the Lloyd Expressway just east of Walmart, the great location and ample seating make it a very accommodating place to stop for a quick lunch break or a dinner with a small group. (They also offer kids’ meals and platters for larger groups.) With their variety of presentations of everyone’s favorite white meat, there’s no doubt that they have something for all to enjoy. - Jonathan Gluff - Jonathan Gluff *Visit Zaxby's Evansville location at 1021 N. NEWS4U APRIL 2018 | CUISINE & DINING
IN THE KITCHEN with Chef Amanda Hancock ITALIAN PANINI Paninis are sandwiches that are pressed, usually on a panini press. Not everyone is able, or has room for, one on their counter. That’s ok! I can teach you how to make a great Italian panini using what you already have. All you need are two pans and either a heavy can or a full bag of flour. I like to make my paninis on focaccia bread, which is a soft, but hearty Italian bread. You can also use Ciabatta, or even a French bread cut into thick slices. I chose to do an Italian sandwich because I used to own an Italian restaurant. That doesn’t mean you have to. You can use any type of meats, cheeses, or just veggies if you like. Ingredients: • Bread of your choice (I used homemade focaccia) • 2 oz. of smoked ham • 2 oz. of hard salami or Genoa

Pepperoni Provolone cheese Spicy horseradish mustard Roasted red peppers Fresh tomatoes
Directions: • Make sure your meats and cheeses come up to room temperature • Heat your first pan, or panini press to medium/high heat • Brush the outside of each piece of bread with olive oil or butter • Add your mustard/mayo/vinaigrette, or other condiments to your bread • Begin stacking your meat and top with the cheese of your choice • Top with your veggies • Place the other piece of bread on the top THIS PART IS IMPORTANT!! • Place a piece of foil on the bottom of

your other pan and then put the pan on top of your sandwich If you want the typical press, add a bag of flour or heavy object to the pan on top If it is being pressed, the sandwich will get warm throughout Carefully remove your sandwich from the pans and cut at a diagonal
It’s important to let your meats and cheeses come up to room temperature because if you start with cold products, it will be difficult to get it hot all the way through. A panini can be made into whatever you would like it to be. I even make my grilled cheese on my panini press. Making one out of roasted vegetables with either a pesto or marinara sauce is lovely as well. Just make it taste good! For more recipes, visit chefamandahancock.com

CORDUROY ORBISON T
Self-professed "tallest band in the tri-state" set to record first EP, branch out into major cities
he name alone is worth the price of admission, as they say. Yes, Corduroy Orbison will most certainly go down as one of the more interesting band monikers of the local scene part tribute to an iconic singer and part clever wordplay. But does the music match the wit? Well, judging by reactions to performances around the tri-state at places like Lamasco Bar & Grill and Chilly Willy's Pub in Evansville and CYO Brewing in Owensboro, the answer seems pretty clear: area music fans truly appreciate a group with a deep knowledge of, and respect for, the history of rock and roll. It shouldn't be surprising then that Corduroy Orbison came into being via a run through the Rolling Stones' "No Expectations" - or maybe it was "Lost Highway" by Hank Williams. Either way, you get the idea. These guys embody "authentic." The two musicians at the center of Corduroy Orbison - vocalist/guitarist David Davis and guitarist Zach Evans met through a mutual acquaintance at a time when each was looking for a new direction. They clicked immediately,

discovering a shared love for "slow, sad songs." Soon, these musical soulmates were making that fateful first pass through the Stones, Hank Williams, The Beatles and more. A duo was born. Mostly covers at first, but once drummer/percussionist Andrew Baum came on board to flesh out the sound, that mindset changed. "At the time, Zach and I had just started working on two or three originals - which were acoustic-driven songs that I thought would work with his electric sound," Davis explains. "But then with Andrew it got amped up into more of a band." However, the rhythm section was void of a key element: the bottom end. Luckily, they didn't have to look far as Davis quickly recruited bassist Evan Ciscell, a member of his Silencio project that recorded with Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording last year. "Evan just kind of slotted in - all the ingredients were there, the right dynamic. Ever since I started working with him, he's the only bass player that I ever wanted," Davis says. With all the pieces in place now, Corduroy Orbison is set to record

at Black Cat this month. Adding to the buzz about the band's first EP is the conceptual nature of the lyrics penned by Davis - primarily inspired by the return of cult favorite TV show Twin Peaks last summer. I.E., this won't be your average collection of songs. "David is just a brilliant songwriter and he's got an amazing voice," Evans says. "I just knew that I wanted to add everything I could to the music - it's been a pleasure working with the other guys to build it up, and I'm really looking forward to recording with Steve." The plan is to knock out all the tracks in one rock-fuelled weekend to hopefully capture the sort of urgency that often results in studio magic. Of course, everyone knows that original music and the tri-state don't quite see eye to eye. Or, as Baum humorously puts it, "It's very difficult to get gigs or at least get asked back." So while the band will continue to play covers around town - but surely mix in some new stuff - the idea is to get the heck out of dodge on occasion, to cities like Indianapolis, Lafayette, Louisville and Chicago. Speaking of original music, Evans who does an ace job writing for the Evansville Courier & Press - has kickstarted Pocket City Sounds, a new program highlighting local bands. "The idea is that every week we'll have a new band in a different place," he says. "The first place we'll do is East Branch Library, and we're also looking at PG, Wired, Secret Headquarters, High Score Saloon - just unexpected spots." It's strictly a no-covers-allowed deal with performances uploaded to the newspaper's website. In fact, Corduroy Orbison shot the demo, if you will, for PCS, filming two songs off the upcoming EP inside the Courier & Press warehouse. Leave it to Baum to sum it up: "We were perhaps the first - and last - band to play there." Catch Corduroy Orbison at CYO Brewing in Owensboro on April 14 and follow them on Facebook for more info.

New Tastes Like Chicken singer eager to share her songwriting gift, record album in Nashville
"The reason I do music is because I want to love on people and let them know that they're not alone," explains Janelle Mulherin, newest member of local cover band Tastes Like Chicken. Known for her big smile and even bigger voice, the Memorial grad has a serious passion for performing that goes back years - to her kindergarten days, in fact. "I grew up singing in church - I would sing every weekend at St. Clement in Boonville, Holy Rosary, St. Ben's, Christ the King," she says. Around the age of 10, Mulherin began taking piano lessons and receiving proper voice training. It was apparent to anyone within earshot that this pint-sized ball of energy had all kinds of talent, but as she entered high school and sports became the main focus (we're talking Memorial, after all), singing often took a backseat to the 'ra-ra' mindset. Still, Mulherin's drive to share her gift with the world remained. Artistically speaking, college signaled a new beginning of sorts for Mulherin who attended the University of Evansville
60 |
April 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
on a music scholarship. To appease her parents - rightly concerned about a career angle of some kind - she pursued music education with an eye on teaching kids. But as her graduation date drew closer, Mulherin had an epiphany of sorts. "I realized that I like to color my hair and just be more open - not so conventional in terms of rules and regulations," she explains, sporting blue highlights which only serve to make her point. "I don't want someone to tell me how I need to teach someone." So with just 26 credit hours to go, Mulherin pulled the plug to concentrate on her passion. "I know what I want to do, and I didn't need a degree for it," she says. But college did rekindle her lifelong love of classical music. She performed operas at UE, the beauty of which lit a creative spark, inspiring Mulherin to become a songwriter. From that point forward, she could always be found carrying a notebook to catalog daily thoughts and lyrical ideas. But
bringing those words and melodies to life required just the right instrument - and not the one you might expect considering Mulherin's classical background. "For me, the guitar is different than the piano - it's something that you're holding; it's intimate," she says. "Even the sounds that come out of it are so particular to "you"" The search for the perfect six-string ended last year when Mulherin came across a beautiful - albeit rather expensive - Taylor brand acoustic guitar at a local music store which she splurged on for good reason: "It kind of matches my voice as far as the fullness of it," she says. Now armed with her trusty Taylor, Mulherin is working towards recording an album of original material in Nashville - which she hopes to complete within the next year. But first she needs to define her sound. "I feel like I'm so many different kinds of music. I love old school country - that's what I grew up with - but I also love the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt," she says. To help shape her vision and avoid the often bland feel of contemporary productions, Mulherin plans to find studio musicians that are open to, and interested in, being a part of the songwriting process. "I want everyone to have their say and we do it all together - a communal thing," she says. Currently, Mulherin is killing it with popular cover band Tastes Like Chicken, sharing vocal duties alongside frontman TJ Tanoos. It's the first time that she's felt truly
comfortable as part of a group, having previously sung with the likes of Bosco and The Godfathers. "We go through a song one time and it's great - that is so hard to find," she says. "They want me to be creative and show my personality." Which Mulherin has in spades. In addition to possessing a big voice and impressive range, she literally beams from the stage, sending good vibes to everyone in the crowd. Oh, and she can rap, too. Between TLC and her job at a local dentist's office, Mulherin also finds time to sing with RapTure, an acoustic trio that includes her brother when he's in town. They cover the spectrum of classic and contemporary pop, rock and country, from Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac to Lady Antebellum and Nicki Minaj - all in Mulherin's rather sizeable wheelhouse. Really, there's not much that she can't do - including finishing that college degree. Going back to school has inevitably slowed down the creative process, but ultimately, it's a good thing. Still, she can't wait to put her heart and soul into that Nashville recording - but appreciates the importance of taking her time and getting it right. "You only get one shot in this business - as soon as it all starts, it can end just as quickly." Catch Janelle Mulherin with Tastes Like Chicken at the Sidetrack Tavern on April 7 and O'Brian's Sports Bar & Grill on April 27.

STEVE BRIDGMON Owensboro native up for two ICMA awards on April 5th at the Grand Ole Opry
F
or a number of years, Steve Bridgmon was the foundation of Firm Foundation, a western Kentucky-based gospel quartet that performed upwards of 120 shows per year. The 40-something Owensboro native served as the lead vocalist and emcee, providing a focal point - and comic relief, at times - for the group as they built a following across the country. Perhaps it's not surprising then, that the prospect of Bridgmon going solo was always on the lips of those with a front row seat to his talent. Still, he resisted. But eventually, during the course of a well-deserved sabbatical from the road, the thought of scaling back
62 |
his touring schedule and concentrating on studio work sounded pretty good. Then, as Bridgmon recounts it, "divine intervention" happened. After finally recording a solo album in 2016 - only to see it sit on a shelf for months due to lack of interest Bridgmon packed up and moved to Nashville. But not to be a part of the music industry. "That's what a lot of people think happened, but it was the opposite," he explains. "I had worked in the school district in Owensboro for years - I took the 20 years retirement and moved to Nashville to take a job as a staffing coordinator." But the Man Upstairs apparently had other plans for Bridgmon. Soon after arriving, he ran into a friend who noted that there was a need for new artists in the genre of inspirational country music; the same friend also invited him to a showcase at Pigeon Forge which was, in reality, a singing competition. Bridgmon walked away with the "W," impressing some big name judges, including the lead singer of Shenandoah. Most importantly, the song that blew everyone away - "Angels By Another Name," a track off Bridgmon's previously ignored solo album - was subsequently picked up by a very influential DJ in Jennings, Louisiana, and ultimately added to playlists at radio stations across the U.S. "Here's the irony - a year ago on April 5, that song hit the National Christian Country Top 10 at number nine," Bridgmon says, still in awe of how things transpired. "And now I'll be attending the ICMAs on April 5 at the Grand Ole Opry." That's because "Angels
April 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
By Another Name" literally blew-up in 2017, reaching the top of 20 separate charts and paving the way for the release of The Ride, Bridgmon's debut fulllength which has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40,000 copies to date, more than all the Firm Foundation recordings combined. Follow-up singles "Joyride" and "Somewhere There's a River" have gone top five, solidifying the Owensboro native's place at the forefront of the inspirational country music genre. Now it's just a question of what Bridgmon will say in his acceptance speech at the ICMAs, scheduled to be broadcast on The Country Network. Well, let's not get ahead of the game, here. Despite the overwhelming popularity of "Angels," the competition is stiff in the category of Inspirational Country Song of the Year with the likes of Lisa Daggs, Jeff Bates and Buddy Jewel also vying for the prize. "At least I'm up for two awards, so hopefully I'll win one," Bridgmon says. The other nomination, for New Artist of the Year, certainly seems a lock for someone who's inspired countless music fans with such a heartfelt song. ""Angels" has taken on a life of its own. In concert, I would talk about my grandmother before singing it, and since then it always resonates. What happens is that people start getting up and going to another member of the audience and saying, 'Thank you for being my angel - this is what you did for me.'" For more info, visit firmfoundationquartet. com. The Ride is available at Amazon. com, iTunes and other online sites.

STORIES FROM THE STAGE
with Lindsey James Williams An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians
“ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS” - Jaques (As You Like It - Shakespeare) Could it be I read this as a child and took its literal meaning to the extreme? I much prefer the stage, any stage, or no stage at all as long as I can be entertaining someone. I love engaging people. Whether it’s an acoustic performance with all my guitar effects or just telling a joke in line at the grocery store, like it or not, I am an entertainer. There’s another word for this type of person: “annoying.” Just ask my family. I was always in the hall in grade school, and, in later years, sent to the office or detention. Then, in much later years, I dropped out of college, bounced around at some pretty low paying jobs, and was happier in trouble than just being in the crowd. Eventually, an obsession for the guitar put me on a path toward turning “annoying” into music. When I was floundering around in my teens and early twenties, I began to get really close to my cousin, Mark Brooks. He had always been my idol. He was a martial arts champion, had his own place, and a good job. He played guitar, sang and most importantly, wrote his own songs…songs about girls… and the things you could do with them.
in songwriting. Life was imitating art. I felt I had so much to say, and the more confidence I pulled from Mark, the more I felt like I could warrant a stage of my own. One of my cooking jobs found me in the company of some talented musicians who were hired to perform: Mike Mitchell, Nick Hamilton, Eric Duke, Scott Winzinger. I was floored, not just by them but that this was a thing! People will pay you to play songs in a bar! I had no idea. Just as Mark had encouraged me to sing and play and write, this acoustic tag team in rotation at Scooter and Scobo’s (what is now Schaum’s Pizzeria) did so too by giving me my first shot on their stage, or….corner of a restaurant/bar as it were. Hey, ALL the world’s a stage, right? I was bad. I was pitchy. The few songs I knew I messed up every time. Mark would come for support and usually bring a few friends. I eventually convinced the owners to give me my own night. I was suddenly meeting lots of new people, dating an older woman (She was only 26! I was in on a fake ID. Shhhhh!), moving out from my parents’ house. This music thing was compelling, and I was lucky to be able to turn it into full-time work.

Mark and I shared many stages on many nights over the next several years. Our show stopper was "California Dreamin’" by The Mamas & The Papas. Even though we didn’t have an official gig together, we always ended up at the same place and time in Evansville and, invariably, someone would request it. But it wasn’t my playing or our singing that was the appeal. Mark had the uncanny ability to clasp his hands together, blow between his thumbs into his hands,

and imitate the flute solo flawlessly, note for note in perfect pitch. It was beautiful, and genius, and everyone ate it up. We must have performed that song a hundred times fueled by a hundred times more Crown and Diets. It’s too bad those days were pre-smartphone. To my knowledge, no record exists of just how unique it was. I suppose there’s a small chance the memory is better than any videos would have been. Those Crown and Diets could have maybe…possibly?… influenced our perception of awesome? Nah.
"The LetterBox" A Short Story By John Thurgood
There is a spot in the woods where Therese Gilbert buries
letters. They appear with the mail, sometimes months apart, other times only days. The handwriting is the same every time with no return address. She once watched the mailbox all day to see who was delivering them, but she couldn't watch all
day, every day. The mystery continued unsolved. They show in her mailbox, and she buries them.
She didn't know to bury them at first. When the first letter arrived, she read it and quickly threw it away, thinking it was
a prank, one of the neighborhood kids trying to cause a stir, or at least that's what she thought until Father Brian broke his back getting trampled by his neighbor's horse. Immediately
after hearing the news, she took the letter out of the trash and
out to the woods to bury it, because it said, “Bury me in the woods out past the brier or the Father will carry the horse.”
When the second letter arrived, she buried it right away. They
lay in a wooden box about a foot underground in a small
clearing just up from the creek. At midday, a thick splash
of sunlight marks the spot, but only she knows the secrets written on each. They arrive and she buries them, but not

Since Mark's diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) five years ago, we don’t get to perform together much anymore. We shared a show last New Year's Eve in which we alternated sets of me playing live and him DJing and giving away schwag. It was great being on stage together again, Mark still there supporting me as always, just these days from the support of his powered wheelchair (or par chair, as he jokingly drawls.) He helped me find my voice and myself. Any stage I ever take is the result of the kindness, encouragement, inspiration, and love I received from my cousin, and my best friend, “Magic” Mark Brooks.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT
SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY
Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.
BICKELS: Bickels is a male brown & white tabby cat. He is about a year old and is the last remaining of the “Chips” litter surrendered in fall of 2017. Why has he been here so long, you ask? Well he’s kind of scared of people. Like, when you reach for him, he runs. He has lived at River Kitty Cat Café since September and gets largely ignored for that reason. He will need a special, patient family who doesn’t mind sharing their home with an aloof kitty! He’s adoptable for $40 and ready to go home today. Make your reservation to see him at riverkittycatcafe.com. GAGA: Gaga is a 2-yearold female rabbit. She is one of VHS’ longest resident bunnies! Remember to always adopt and never shop for Easter bunnies. If your kids aren’t prepared for a 10+ year commitment, stick with chocolate! Gaga’s $40 adoption fee includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more.
KAZUTO & KIRITO
A former vet tech with the Kentucky Humane Society, Cristy Grimsley has literally been surrounded by animals for much of her life. She currently resides in Fort Hood, TX, with her husband Andrew who served for 10 years, along with three rescues, including two kittens adopted from the VHS back in September. It was the first step towards healing after the painful loss of Atlas, the couple's beloved feline companion animal who helped Andrew cope with his PTSD. "We visited the shelter and just fell in love with Kirito (formerly Spicy Meatball)," Grimsley says. "And the staff was just superb. We spent hours there picking out the perfect cat." Just two weeks later, the couple decided that their little "orange fluffball" needed a friend, so back they went to find an even more perfect cat. Enter Kazuto (formerly Coronado). "Oh my goodness, they are the best of brothers - even though they aren't related," Grimsley says. "They have such distinct personalities. Kirito runs around the house at full speed and Kazuto's very laidback. We call him our black panther; he watches everything." The whole family - including Amos, the couple's rescue dog - hit the road for Fort Hood back in October and by all accounts, the transition has been extremely smooth with all three pets just loving their new home in Texas. Another successful adoption!
SAGE: Sage is an absolutely fantastic American Staffordshire Terrier or "pit bull" mix. To many at the shelter, she goes by her nickname, Momma Dog, because she gave birth to TEN healthy puppies on Christmas Day. Her puppies are all grown up now and finding homes of their own. So Sage is ready for the empty nester lifestyle where she can be the center of attention! She has done well with some other dogs at the shelter and would like to meet any potential housemates before going home. She's about 2 years old. She is extremely well-mannered, walks well on a leash, and rides well in the car. She would be wonderful with kids of any age. And since she was busy raising her puppies over the holiday season, she is now one of our longest resident dogs!

the
LENNY ENLOW
story
Boonville drag racer rebounds, rebuilds after devastating fire, loss of dream car
Seemingly nothing can stop Boonville's Lenny Enlow. A lifelong drag racer known far and wide for his AMX speed demon of a car and countless victories, the 72-year-old retired truck driver only ever goes one direction: forward - and fast. Call it bullheadedness or just a refusal to ever admit defeat, but this single-minded approach to life helped Enlow pick up the pieces and move on after the terrible events of January 4, 2015. For most of the tri-state, the new year signaled a fresh start; however, out on Yankeetown Highway, just south of Boonville, the first flickers of an ultimately devastating fire began to appear in a pole barn. Inside was housed Enlow's celebrated AMX along with his dream car, a 1933 Willys - rebuilt from scratch after he hauled the pieces of it back from a seller in Washington, D.C. - and rows and rows of trophies. Visiting a friend at the time, Enlow rushed home, only to find the structure completely engulfed in flames. It was a total loss and not just in monetary terms. Hundreds of hours of hard work had gone into the meticulous care of the vehicles. We're talking blood, sweat and...well, Lenny's never really been one

to cry. But perhaps he shed a tear or two in private, especially considering that due to a dispute over insurance premiums two months prior, the barn was no longer covered. The average person might have just crawled up into a ball and given up. Not Enlow. If anything, he was more determined than ever. See, after taking an extended break from racing and showing his AMX all over the country, he'd decided to get back up and running at the ripe old age of 70, to remind everyone how he once ruled the tracks at Chandler, Windy Hollow, and many other tri-state speedways. Or maybe he just wanted to feel the rush again. Regardless, with the help of his son Travis who logged many an afternoon and evening at the barn, Enlow was primed and ready to race again. Then January 4 happened. But there was another, even
stronger fire started that day - in his soul. Just a couple weeks after watching his pole barn - along with his prized cars - burn to the ground, Enlow began rebuilding. With virtually no outside assistance, mind you. In other words, this is one seriously industrious and driven guy. It took about a year, but a nearly identical, brand new structure was finally in place, financed completely by Enlow. But he wasn't done. That dream car of his, pretty much reduced to a charred frame, became the next project - or obsession, if you will. Every free moment - and dollar - was spent restoring the 1933 Willys to its former glory. Among other things, this required tracking down a proper fiberglass body in Ohio (a mere six or seven grand) and doing the unthinkable: removing the engine - relatively undamaged in the fire - from his beloved, super-charged AMX and transferring it to the Willys. You guessed it, Enlow is dead set on drag racing his dream car. Odds are you don't know any senior citizens who build barns from the ground up and cars from scratch - especially with the intent of racing them at top speeds. But Lenny Enlow is clearly made of different stuff. How else to explain his ability to bounce back from such a life-altering event? So for anyone in search of inspiration as old age approaches, look no further than the 72-year-old guy coming to a speedway near you - or flying by you on the street, for that matter.

few days ago, I was watching a cartoon with my 7 year old son. The cartoon is not important, but it is one of my… I said his… favorites. Teen Titans Go! In the show, one of the team members wanted to encourage the others to learn while having fun. Sure, this isn’t for everyone, but for me – it’s always been appealing. Beyond that, edutainment is a very real thing. From puzzles, to reading, to video games… gaining knowledge while getting your good time on is all right in my book. In the show, they experienced a REAL LIFE video game that many hold dear in their hearts… the Oregon Trail.

Ahh, video games in school never got any better in my opinion. Sure, very few actually made it to Oregon, but the fun is in trying, right? What’s your career? Who’s along for the ride? Do you rest? Do you hunt? Do you die of dysentery? That game is forever in my heart. Which got me thinking. The gateway to the west is St. Louis, somewhere I’ve been. However, I have never been to the actual place where the Oregon Trail finds its beginning. That place is Independence Missouri. Also home to the

Harry S Truman National Historic Site (a Moore Explores for another day) the, city is steeped in history and things to see and do. The monument marking the beginning of the Trail itself sits near a massive courthouse in the middle of one of the coolest town squares I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. Everything from antique shops, to a modern day hot dog stand complete with a giant hot dog mascot, to an old fashioned soda fountain. If you visit Independence, do yourself a favor, and visit Clinton’s. Doing what they do since 1908, the Root Beer Float is amazing, but you won’t go wrong with anything they have to offer. Soups, sandwiches, ice cream, classic phosphates… I could’ve ordered the entire menu! Within walking distance of the monument, you have all I’ve already mentioned AND there’s a Civil War Jail Museum, and Kansas City is a short hop away. I’m sure if Independence was all that it is today, very few would’ve ever cared about heading west to Oregon. Make a trip to Independence Missouri a part of YOUR “To Do” list. Adventure is out there! It’s just up to us to find it.

THE WRITE STUFF
ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church
Q:
EASTER ON APRIL FOOLS DAY?
Easter on April Fools’ Day. When I was a kid, growing up in Pittsburgh, we woke up one Easter morning to three feet of new snow. Surprise! And it wasn’t even April 1st. Lots of places lay claim to be the origin of April Fools’ Day and it is celebrated in many – often strange – ways. Playing the prank, preparing the practical joke, orchestrating the hoax – some people go to great lengths. It used to be enough to employ the whoopee cushion, the buzzer ring, or the eye-blackening telescope. It’s all gotten quite elaborate. This year, the Church’s highest holiday falls on the day of surprises. And, when you stop to think about it, Easter is more than a surprise. Just when we figured we had shut God up, God is right back in our face. “I’m ba-a-a-ack!” Every faith tradition has those wondrous moments of surprise and wonder. Seas parting to allow the escape of the enslaved, a horseback ride into heaven, brothers pray for a sister and a sister is given – wondrous moments that lead us beyond the commonplace into the extraordinary. In a world where everything can seemingly be reduced into a series of zeroes and ones, where information is more available than at any other time in history, it’s nice to know that there is still room for a little wonder, a little amazement, a little mystery. It’s nice to know that not everything can be explained. Take a moment this month and be amazed.

with Jonathan Gluff Only In Dreams (or “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”) My wife and I often like to compare dreams while we’re getting ready for work in the morning. While hers are undeniably off-kilter, mine tend to be a strange mix of incredibly detailed yet uniquely bizarre. One I recently had trumped just about any that I’ve heard from her recently. I had a dream I played one-on-one against the president. (I promise this has zero political motivation, so please bear with me.) I can’t remember the details of how or why we decided to play - let alone why I was at the White House in the first place or why it would have a full-size basketball court with fullyfunctioning scoreboard - but I do remember the friendly and benign bet we made beforehand, something to the effect of the loser having to tweet that the other was a superior player. (Alright, maybe that’s a slight dig at his tweeting proclivities.) I have to say, for a septuagenarian, the man could ball. Either that, or my id (or ego? I was never good with Freud) wouldn’t let my subconscious admit just how terrible I am on the hardwood, because it was a struggle; I was barely winning. Things were slightly in my favor until he decided to cheat and
have whoever was in charge of the aforementioned scoreboard bump his score from 14-11 in my favor to 15-14 in his, at which point I went full-on John McEnroe. (It’s a dream, so I can mix sports references, okay?) The last thing I remember was being subdued by Secret Service members, and even my ego (pretty sure I’ve got the right one this time) couldn’t fight those guys off. Again, I promise this has no political underpinnings, but serves as a musing on the power of random firings of synapses whilst we slumber. The machinations of the human brain are truly an amazing thing, capable of the most vivid and lifelike visions that could never hope to be achieved by even the most advanced technology this side of The Matrix. And while the “humans only use 10% of their brains’ potential” trope is an oft-debunked laughable fallacy, no expert in any field will deny the raw power our minds possess. Each day, we must ask ourselves: Will I limit what my mind is capable of? Or will I tap into all its potential? I urge us all to live to our full potential.

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox
PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE with Marisa Patwa
Girls Incarcerated is must watch TV I’ve had a love/hate relationship with documentaries/docu-series for years now, but when I saw the promo for Girls Incarcerated recently, a new Netflix show featuring young girls at the Madison Juvenile Correctional City right here in Indiana, I just knew I had to watch. The show was just released on Netflix last month and follows several Indiana teens on their journey from being locked up at the facility to how they handle being released afterwards. There are many reasons to watch this amazing show, especially watching how some girls grow and evolve into reformed citizens while others try and falter when they get home - like Aubrey Wilson, who after seemingly getting her act together, ended up running away from home a few weeks after getting released and was found by police during an incident where her friend allegedly assaulted a man they were holed up with. But the main reason to watch is because of young inmate Armani Buckner, who is an Evansville native! The show depicts Armani’s romantic relationship with fellow inmate Alexis Miller and although Armani is now currently in a relationship with another female, it’s quite fascinating
to watch these young, romantic relationships form while these girls are locked up. Another reason to watch is the depiction of the families, the majority of which love their “bad” girls and want the best for them, but are fed up with their criminal shenanigans. Aubrey’s grandmother, for example, is her main caretaker since her mother has her own drug problems and really isn’t in her life. And boy, is she a force to reckon with. She has an incredibly sweet and nurturing personality, but can be both a pushover and a hardass. For instance, the entire time she was driving to go pick Aubrey up after she had been missing for a while, she was talking about how upset she was with her for leaving a candle burning right before she climbed out of her window to run away. But as soon as she picked her up and saw how upset she was about her friend being arrested, she asked her if she “needed a hug.” But don’t worry, she promptly told her she wasn’t allowed to have her candle back when they got home. So go get on Netflix, search for Girls Incarcerated, press play and get ready to laugh and cry with these incredibly vulnerable and brave, young, Indiana girls.
THE DICHOTOMY OF MIKE BRAUN "I'm a conservative Republican." That's what Jasper resident Mike Braun touts in his campaign ads as he vies for a GOP primary victory over U.S. Congressmen Todd Rokita and Luke Messer in Indiana's hotly contested Senate race. All three are trying to align themselves with the President and woo the voters who elected him. Braun might have the best argument that he's the outsider in this race as he's never held federal office. He served in the state legislature for three years so he does have a voting record. But is he really a conservative? According to reports, Braun voted in the Democratic primaries up until 2012, something he'll have to address on the campaign trail should he win the primary. However, in terms of Braun's legislative voting record, he pretty much walked the GOP line. Braun supported RFRA and later voted yes on the bill that states RFRA doesn't authorize discrimination against the LGBT community and others; he voted yes to limiting public access to police body camera footage; he supported school vouchers during his time in the General Assembly and voted against expanding Medicaid. One of Braun's last major bills he voted on was supporting a fuel tax to pay for infrastructure projects. This got him into some heat with conservative organizations and Rokita who nicknamed Braun "Tax Hike" Mike. He also has a 100% rating from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. I can't tell you where Braun's heart lies, but his head votes conservative. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

MUTE
LIBERTY FILMS UK Set in a futuristic Berlin, an Amish mute looks for his missing girlfriend while an AWOL American soldier does what he can to secure forged identification and passports for himself and his adolescent daughter. Their paths collide when it is revealed that the missing girlfriend has a past she can't avoid. The plot unfolds like a Gone Girl reboot produced by Vertigo Comics or what it might look like if Lars Von Trier had directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The high tech metropolis looks a lot like Earth in The Fifth Element, but its detail might owe more credit to the William Gibson novel Neuromancer, borrowing from it a blend of outmoded and hyper-advanced technologies, polyglot characters of all ethnicities and social status, and grotesque sexual deviation. The former also calls attention to some aspects of the film that mark its influences outside the American canon, placing its roots instead among the Scandinavian directors like Lars Von Trier (mentioned above), but also Bo Widerberg, Ilkka Jarvi-Laturi and even Ingmar Bergman. Alexander Skarsgard plays a very convincing Amish mute, embodying the character of a dumb goliath that supporting characters repeatedly call attention to, and Paul Rudd proves once again that he can pass as a solipsistic prick. The storyline is full of twists and turns, but may leave many viewers with more questions than answers. - John Thurgood
THE OUTSIDER LINSON ENTERTAINMENT
Nearly a decade after World War II, Japan is still reeling from the economic and social effects of the war. In The Outsider, a modern take on the samurai genre (think The Last Samurai meets Ronin), the backdrop of 1950s Japan helps show the crumbling dynamic of the Shiromatsu family, an order of yakuza under pressure from foreign investors to choose between tradition or the olive branch of a larger and much more influential family. Caught in the middle of all this is Nick Lowell, an American POW (played by Jared Leto) who befriends a member of the Shiromatsu family in prison and eventually becomes yakuza after proving himself through a series of harrowing yet careless acts of loyalty. Many of the culturally insensitive aspects of this film could be blamed on pacing, mainly because most of the movie is structured on the theme of failing with honor (mirroring Japan's unfortunate role at the end of the war), but most of its lead characters act rather cavalier when it comes to upholding that honor, offering trust and forgiveness without much thought or, more specifically, time. The storyline of The Outsider might have held up better in a longer format, but as it stands, it is a beautiful look at a culture during one of its most trying periods. If nothing else, the location scouting and camera work is stunning. - John Thurgood

THE WOMBATS Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life Kobalt Label Services I’m an absolute sucker for a good indie rock album with inventive use of language in its lyrics, and The Wombats deliver both in spades on their newest release. Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life just sells as a good indie rock album title; I look at that title and I can already get the basic gist of what I’m buying. There won’t be any Seattle natives grunting and calling it singing, there won’t be any good ‘ole boys twanging on an acoustic guitar that costs more than my car and singing about dirt roads (again). That there’s an indie album. Even the song titles themselves are fun: "Cheetah Tongue," "Black Flamingo," and my personal favorite being "Lemon to a Knife Fight." I’m a bit late to the game on finding out about The Wombats if my discussions of this album with my extended friend group are any indication, but I can’t stress the sheer fun of Beautiful People enough. In the case of some not-as-glowing reviews, I had to actively force myself to even finish the album once to have a fully informed opinion; I’ve listened to this one three times in totality since adding it to Spotify. - Gavin Gaddis
CAR SEAT HEADREST Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) Matador Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) is an oddity. For those not familiar with the indie rock act Car Seat Headrest, this new album is a second go-around of their 2011 album, Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror). Not content with a simple re-master, CSH essentially used the original album as the basic blueprint for a new, better version; the songs are re-worded and everything has been re-recorded. I’ve yet to encounter a band attempting something so labor-intensive that also walks a fine line of annoying fans who loved the first version. Fortunately, this new version is a darn good slice of sad coffee shop indie tunes. You know the type: well-written remorseful songs sung by a deep-voiced person with an electric guitar, most often heard in hipster-chic coffee shops playing music just a hair too quiet for patrons to actually understand anything. Twin Fantasy might not bring anything particularly new to the table instrumentally (guitar, bass, drums - how revolutionary), but the entire package begs for the listener to spend a quiet hour alone listening with headphones. There’s a passion to this album that elevates it above the sea of same-y indie rock from bands with similarly out-there names. - Gavin Gaddis

MGMT Little Dark Age Columbia Records Once again MGMT (a band one might remember from having a song in every movie trailer for a few years) returns with an album that manages to stretch the boundaries of the genre their label slaps on the press kit with weird voice-overs, trippy songs, and psychedelic synths that sound as at home in a video game soundtrack as they do in a MGMT track. At the risk of over-repeating a sentiment I’ve expressed in past reviews: this album delivers more of what a fan of MGMT would want. If one owns the previous two releases, they’ll enjoy the act of engaging in more content from the band. On a spectrum where one end is a bland rock band and the other a band so trippy one can only enjoy their “music” with the use of (currently) controlled substances, Little Dark Ages takes one or two steps over the middle line towards “normal” rock. While there is a hefty dose of psychedelic fun to be had (and I’m sure a handful of college students across Evansville will beg to differ), MGMT delivers a solid little album that’s fun to consume stone-cold sober. - Gavin Gaddis
UNDEROATH Erase Me Fearless Records I don’t usually partake in music targeting a specific subset of people, be it by religion, genre, or location. While it’s true that better art stems from restrictions than unlimited options - a perfect example being the fact that the original Star Wars trilogy’s budget required only keeping the best content, unlike the bloated prequels - there are those that use the restrictions of a genre to simply lean on tropes. There’s a reason pop-country is besieged by people (like myself) who think they’re funny poking fun at the fact that the majority of songs are about trucks, dirt roads, girlfriends referred to as “babe,” manual labor, dogs, and taking vacations in Cancun. Most popular songs in that genre include at least one of those topics. Underoath breaks the boundaries of what one expects from a group that sells itself as Christian by breaking a decade-long gap between albums with Erase Me, a giant metalcore question mark that seeks to discuss some of the tougher questions that come up about one’s belief system. The band members are asking questions nobody really has an answer to and putting that frustration on display through music, which is a difficult thing to pull off. - Gavin Gaddis

DANIELLE DUVAL Lose It PeoplePlay Records One of the most evident things the listener will pick up when listening to Lose It is that Danielle Duval has found her musical niche. Driven by whimsical synth riffs and mainly sticking to the topic of relationships, this is one of the purest synth pop albums I have heard. But its best moments are when it strays from this formula: Departures from the genre are a welcome break, both instrumental, like the classic rock-inspired guitar solo in “Whenever You Want It,” and thematic, like Duval’s tribute to her mother in “Part of You.” The album has a problem of creating a rut for itself. This is particularly noticeable in songs like “Beat It Down” and “Crash the Party,” both of which strictly follow genre to the point of being monotonous. Indeed, the chorus of “Nowhere is Far” repeats itself so much that it makes the listener wonder if all it takes to become an indie star is singing the same line a few dozen times. But Lose It does have its interesting moments, with unique chord progressions and melodies occasionally breaking the lyrical monotony. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.
SUMMER FIRES Without a Word Self-Released With powerful vocals, impacting lyrics, and guitar and piano hooks that get stuck in your head, Summer Fires is bringing rock back to its basics with their new EP Without a Word. The addition of female harmonies give further depth to songs like “Coming Down” and “Here Tonight,” which also accentuate the vocal aptitude of lead singer J.P. Welsh, who brings both strength and emotion to the tracks. At times, Welsh’s overpowering vocals can be to the EP’s detriment, such as when his anger in the breakup song “Wait. Wait.Wait” carries over into “The Dive,” a fun, romantic track; but on the whole, the vocals are a benefit. The vocals may be good, but the lyrics are what make the EP stand out. From introspective one-liners like “I was hoping I could be as brave as you” to lyrical themes that reappear in subsequent tracks like “Don’t pretend to be sorry” from “Coming Down” versus “I guess I’m not sorry” from “Last Four Hours,” Summer Fires offers a lyrical finesse that modern music desperately needs. With lyrics like these, it’s easy to overlook a simplistic hook or two. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.
THE CROWNING Red Self-Released The Crowning strikes an interesting chord with their new EP Red. In some respects, its sound doesn’t stray too far from the rock fare typical of bands like Rise Against and Taking Back Sunday, with heavy guitar, varied melodies, and that quintessential modern rock voice making up the backbone. In other ways, The Crowning attempts to make the EP their own, rather than just a product of the genre, by including various non-traditional interludes such as the spiraling sound effect that separates the final verse of “In the Fire” from the rest of the song. While this blend of typical and unique sometimes strikes the right chord, Red often has trouble reconciling the two concepts. The EP’s rapid transitions from a style solidified in genre to brief moments of experimentation are rather jarring, as if the band just couldn't seem to settle on a sound. However, on a technical level, each member of The Crowning is incredibly talented: A lot of my listening time was spent trying to find a vocal or instrumental mistake, which proved difficult to do.- Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.
A PERFECT CIRCLE Eat the Elephant BMG Rights Management The first thing that struck me about Eat the Elephant, A Perfect Circle's latest endeavor, is how noticeably - and surprisingly toned-down it is. For an album with a cover featuring someone in all white makeup holding a heart, the music is surprisingly accessible to someone without an affinity for hard rock or metal, yet contains the thought-provoking lyrics the aforementioned genres are known for. Most notably, “TalkTalk” decries people who simply talk about the world’s problems, but do nothing to actually solve them, demanding that individuals practice what they preach. While good, the lyrics are not the best part of the album. That title is soundly claimed by its instrumentation: A Perfect Circle are clearly masters of their respective instruments, especially James Iha, the band’s pianist. Opting to forgo an electric keyboard in favor of a more acoustic approach, Iha provides a solid foundation upon which the rest of the album’s instrumentation is built, injecting dynamics and emotion into every note. Finally, the songs themselves may be somewhat instrumentally repetitive and lyrically cliché at times, but for the most part, Eat the Elephant is a strong return for A Perfect Circle. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. BLUE POINT HONEY ROBBER CREAM ALE
DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5
I was eager to give this one a go since the taste of cream ales can actually go in different directions. It pours up crystal clear and - you guessed it - light honey-colored. The head is moderate and fades quickly. Its aroma is light with sweet malts and the tiniest hint of honey. The taste follows the nose with a soft, sweet maltiness and tinge of honey there. The mouthfeel is light and drinkable and there’s a subtle hops kiss on the finish. Personally this isn’t one of my favorite genres of beer, but in its beer family I feel it’s a pretty respectable effort.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A very thin white head appears and disappears quickly on the beer when poured into a traditional beer mug. Sweet scents from the malt and honey control the nose. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue first, followed by honey notes that remain present in the finish. The hot summer months might lead to people seeking out this crisp and refreshing cream ale. Pair it with salads, mild shellfish, Monterrey Jack cheese or lemon custard tart.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a light amber-colored beer. I can taste the honey right away, but I can also taste another flavor that I can't quite put my finger on. It may be clover or another spice. As crème ales go, this is the best one I have had. It's easy to drink with no bitterness.

BALLAST POINT FATHOM IPA

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4.25
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75
This one came in a 16oz nitro charged can. It pours black in color with a three finger light tan nitro head. It displays good retention and lacing and generates that crazy churning action that you only see in nitro packed beers. Its nose is dominated by roasted malt notes and a little coffee. The ever-so-important taste is no surprise, mimicking the aroma with mostly roasted malts and some coffee notes. I personally drink imperial stouts more frequently so initially found the brew to seem too light, almost watery. I think that was an orientation that needed to be tuned out. It has a nice mouth feel and is very drinkable with a low ABV to boot. So, drink up! A thin tan head tops this stout when poured into an English pub glass, but it never evaporates. The roasted malt gives the scent profile a good amount of coffee and chocolate notes. The first sip of the beer hits the tongue very smoothly, with the roasted malt notes returning in the long finish. People who enjoy stout beers should try this limited release while they can. Pair it with Irish Cheddar cheese or chocolate desserts.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This is your average dark-colored stout beer. I really like the coffee and slight chocolate flavor. But I think this beer just coats your tongue and I don't like that. I think it's actually the Nitro infused in it that makes it cling. It comes in a slightly larger can, 13.5 ounces. I thought the ABV would be higher than 4.8%. But once again, it's a little bit better than your average beer.

From a can (as is becoming more and more common) Fantom IPA pours up a bright amber color with a hazy consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing. The aroma is of hops, pine, citrus fruits, and malts. It’s solid and good. The taste pretty much follows along. The front end of the tasting experience begins with the unavoidable inhalation of hoppy freshness followed by the thirst quenching hop tickle, and citrus follow through; finally, a malt reinforced backbone. This is in my opinion an excellent brew made by a brewery that knows what they’re doing. A thick white head forms on this India pale ale and stays for a long time. An abundance of hop notes fill the nose with a nice mix of citrus and pine scents. The hop flavor continues with the first sip of the beer and gradually decreases in the finish. Hopheads will definitely want to taste this IPA. Pair it with spicy dishes. It might work well with Asian cuisines or Mexican food.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3
This pours a nice amber color with decent carbonation. I can smell the hops right away but I feel it's lacking in flavor. As most IPAs go, they usually hit you pretty good but this one doesn't quite do it. I'm slowing coming around to the world of IPAs but feel this one is just ok.

GOLDEN ROAD PALISADES PINEAPPLE so subtle pale malts. The taste hints at pineapple and fruitiness with a kiss from those pale malts notes at the finish. Note that had the name not tipped me off to be pineapple aware I might not have picked up on it. This is a very drinkable beer and would be a great summer refresher.
PAUL BRAGIN - 2.75 DANIEL KNIGHT - 2.75
Palisades Pineapple is a flavored fruit wheat ale - often referred to as a fruit/ vegetable beer. It’s hazy and honeycolored with a generous air head. To the nose, it’s faintly pineapple with ever
A thick white head rests on this beer after pouring it into a wheat beer glass. Tropical fruit notes dominate the nose, especially the pineapple used during brewing. Mild fruit flavors hit the tongue first and become more prominent after a few seconds. This beer could see a rise in popularity during hot summer months.
Pair it with lighter dishes like salads and lighter fish dishes or fruity desserts like pineapple upside-down cake.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I thought this was going to be a hopped up beer with some sort of slight pineapple flavor; rather, it's a good wheat beer with ample pineapple flavor. It dances the fine line of what I call "beer" when you start infusing fruit flavors and almost make some sort of wine cooler. My friend Patrick and I have deemed this the summer's lawn mowing/ sitting by the pool beer.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
