NEWS4U MAY 2018 | COVER STORY

KC'S MARINA POINTE 8 3 0 L S T D R I V E | EVA N S VI LLE, I N DI A N A

Popular riverfront hangout returning with big Cinco de Mayo weekend grand opening After a long winter and a cold start to spring, tri-staters are just itching to enjoy the outdoors again. Thankfully, the overdue warm-up has arrived, perfectly timed for the return of KC's Marina Pointe, the area's most popular summer venue for live music - and partying, of course. Last year's inaugural run was a huge success with numerous sold out shows and marquis events, but GM Chad Brady is convinced that the 2018 season will be bigger and better thanks to several renovations, including the expansion of the stage area and back bar plus completely remodeled bathrooms. But most importantly, the staff is far more prepared this go around. "Last year we were still putting chairs and tables together at midnight before opening day and our POS systems actually went live just 20 minutes before opening," Brady says, still amazed that they managed to handle 1100 people that first night. To help with the inevitable crush of patrons throughout the summer, he plans to rotate staff in from KC's Time Out Lounge, utilizing veteran bartenders that can meet the demands of an overflow crowd. Hopefully that means Brady will have at least a little time to enjoy the bar's big Cinco de Mayo weekend grand opening featuring two of Marina Pointe's most requested acts: Radio Tokyo and Velcro Pygmies. But one thing's for sure college students will definitely be having a blast. All summer long, students with a valid college ID get in free on Friday

nights up until 11 p.m. - no cover charge. In addition, Thursday evenings will be all about students with $1 Busch Light cans, $3 Fireball shots and live entertainment a College Night to believe in. Speaking of live entertainment, Brady has booked some big names this season, including country duo LoCash for Memorial Day weekend, country star Walker Hayes ("You Broke Up With Me") on Thursday, June 28 and Whiskey Myers on August 2. But that's just scratching the surface. More high profile concert announcements will follow as the summer party season ramps up. And let's not forget the food. Marina Pointe's menu has been given a major upgrade with Chef Nick Weisenborn - formerly of NW Chophouse - taking over in the kitchen. "He's one of the only people I've seen who enjoys coming to work and being in the kitchen all day," Brady says. "Nick's always tinkering with things and coming up with new ideas." Expect significantly improved pizzas, seafood and much, much more. Surely all of the improvements and high profile bookings will add up to another wildly successful season for Marina Pointe. But it's interesting to note that while the popularity of the outdoor bar has been humbling for both Brady and owner KC Chesser, the original plan didn't involve the riverfront at all. "Ultimately, our goal was to be on Franklin Street - this [Marina Pointe]

is what we wanted to do on Franklin Street," Brady explains. "We wanted to bring something really special to that area - we tried as hard as we could but we got turned down, so we brought it out to Marina Pointe." But obviously in the big scheme of things, it's worked out just fine for them. "It would have been great for everyone on Franklin Street if we had been able to do what we wanted, but in another way, I'm glad that we are here, where you can see the river and the boats floating by and the view of downtown. It's amazing; we're proud of it." For more info, visit KC's Marina Pointe on Facebook.

Brian Culbertson V IC TO RY T H E AT R E | MAY 8 | 7: 30 P. M.

The smooth jazz master on his intimate new album, jamming with Stevie Wonder and more

One of the most revered jazz/funk/R&B musicians on the planet, Brian Culbertson has an almost other-worldly knack for creating plush, often pulsing grooves perfect for the club or a late night rendezvous. The Midwestern-born multi-instrumentalist - who now calls LA home - has worked with everyone from the legendary Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire and famed P-Funk bassist Bootsy Collins to contemporary artists like Ledisi and Faith Evans over the course of nearly 25 years, building up an impressive catalog of hits along the way - 30 #1 singles to date, including "Let's Get Started," "Skies Wide Open" (ft. Avant), "So Good" and "Later Tonight." In addition to drawing in a wide-ranging fan base, Culbertson's melodic Midas touch has caught the ear of some high profile admirers, one of which made a surprise appearance during a live show in 2015. That would be none other than Stevie Wonder who knows a thing or two about real talent. Still, Culbertson remains incredibly humble and grateful for all that he's achieved - and attributes much of his success to his wife of 20 years, Michelle, the inspiration behind Colors of Love, the new release that dropped on Valentine's Day. An intimate, sensual collection recorded almost entirely by Culbertson, it plays out like a rapturous comedown from the joyous abandon of 2016's slamming Funk!

Colors of Love has a very intimate feel - and is quite similar in tone to 2005's hugely popular It's On Tonight. Are you going for that vibe on stage? We're actually mixing in any song that has do with that feel - throughout all my records. There's definitely a few from It's On Tonight, a couple from Dreams, a couple from XII - and going back to the 90s as well. So I kind of take people on this journey. And the whole show is really in three acts - the first set is more of the new album; the second set we do a whole funk set right in the middle of the show - hitting people right in the face; and then we chill back out and come back out with another "love" set and of course, build it up till the end. So it all has a nice flow to it. You were in full control of the new album, playing virtually every instrument. Ultimately, was it a good thing to record in a vacuum, in a sense? To me, it depends on what is the ultimate sound of the production that I want. This

particular record I was trying to make it sound personal, intimate and also fairly modern. What that means is that it has to be more on the programmed side of things meaning programming all the drums and all the keyboard atmospheric sounds. You simply can't do that style of a record with a band. Right when I started it I knew immediately that it was going to be that kind of record. It's more similar to It's On Tonight, actually, which was more programmed as opposed to live. Melding that romantic sound with the modern production - I thought it was interesting and something that had never been done. Is it a challenge to bring the intimate sound of the new album to life on stage? It's definitely challenging. The hardest part is the drum part. Because you literally can't replicate that with a live drummer it's impossible. So you just kind of have to change your mentality. It's like, ok, let that be the album version and now this is going to be the live version. So I go to my Continues on page 10

drummer and say, 'hey, we're going to try and replicate some of that crazy hi-hat stuff - do the best you can to learn those patterns, but then go off and do your own thing.' And that's what makes it exciting live, too - if he just stuck to those patterns, it would sound like a drum machine which is not always exciting in a live setting. I kind of marry the two [approaches]. The YouTube video of Stevie Wonder spontaneously jamming with you on stage back in 2015 is amazing. What did he say to you after he busted out his legendary harmonica chops? Yeah, it was odd because when we kind of finished the musical part of it, the band was still playing the song and he comes over to me and he starts having a full-on conversation as if no one else is there [laughs]. And I'm like, oh my god, we're having a conversation in front of three thousand people. He basically just kind of reached over and said - basically just gave me some props - 'hey man, I really like what you're doing and hopefully we can work together in the studio someday, blah, blah, blah.' Again, I was just like, oh my god - ok [laughs]. I really had no idea that he was coming on stage - that was a genuine reaction. Holy sh*t. There's been a few moments like that. The majority of your songs are instrumentals but occasionally feature vocalists. How do you know when a melody is ripe for lyrics? Yeah, that's a good question. Hmmm, I think a lot of times it happens even before I start writing a song. So I'll start literally collaborating with a vocalist with writing a vocal song in mind. So the songs I wrote with Kenny Lattimore, for instance, we got to the studio with no preconceived ideas. It was just the two of us kind of hanging out and vibing. So that's how a lot of the vocal tunes have come to fruition by getting together with the singer directly. Same with Avant - the "Skies Wide Open" song. A lot of times if it's just me by myself, I don't write lyrics, so I'm just playing the piano part, going, 'yeah, this is cool.' I don't want to do too many vocal tunes - the fans like me for playing piano, so I definitely keep that in mind. However, the last funk record was pretty vocal heavy. But it was a good mix, I think. This will be your first time performing in Evansville. Are you excited? I have never played there - can you believe it? I'm very excited. This is the cool thing; I mean, I just started a year and a half ago doing a thing that we call routed tours - meaning extensive bus tours. And what that does is that allows me to play in cities that normally jazz guys don't go to. Because typically we go out on the weekends and do the festivals and big shows that we've been doing for years. However, when we go out on these tours, we need to fill literally every night of the week. So that's why we're in Evansville on a Tuesday. That's really cool, because we can play the Asheville, North Carolinas of the world - and Evansville, IN. As opposed to just Philly, New York - you know, the main cities. Hopefully, we'll get a decent crowd out with us being there for the first time. We shall see. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. BRIT FLOYD O L D N AT I ON A L E V EN T S PLA ZA | JU N E 9 | 8 P.M .

Guitarist Damian Darlington on discovering the music of Pink Floyd, the band's enduring influence, the Syd Barrett era and more

Arguably the greatest tribute band on Earth, Brit Floyd captures the sound, the vision - and perhaps most importantly, the mood - of the legendary Pink Floyd with such startling precision that you'd swear Roger Waters and David Gilmour had finally made amends. And that's not hyperbole. Indeed, this is a well-oiled machine that they welcome you to, so to speak. Case in point, guitarist Damian Darlington reckons that he's performed somewhere in the neighborhood of two and a half thousand shows over the course of 24 years, first linking up with the Australian Pink Floyd Show before eventually settling in with Brit Floyd. For those keeping score, that's more concerts performed than the original group - or anyone else performing Pink Floyd songs for that matter. As Darlington jokes with typical self-deprecating British humor, "I'm not sure whether it's the epitaph I want, but it is interesting as an epitaph, nonetheless." The current "Eclipse" tour sees Brit Floyd mining material from the timeless classic Dark Side of the Moon plus noteworthy tracks from Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell, Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Final Cut and, of course, The Wall - the 40th anniversary of which the band will celebrate in 2019 with a special run of shows. They even dig deep on occasion with rarities from early albums like Animals and Meddle. Quite simply it's the ultimate Pink Floyd experience complete with a stunning million dollar light show, lasers, inflatables and theatrics. Darlington kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of Brit Floyd's return to Evansville at the Old National Events Plaza.

MAY 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Let's start with the basics. What triggered your love of Pink Floyd? Well, it certainly comes from discovering them at an early age - at 14 I first seriously got into listening to them. I was aware of them at a younger age when "Another Brick in the Wall" was a single; I was about 10 at that time. But I wasn't quite ready to be a proper rock and roll fan at that age. But when I started to play guitar and started to discover all these groups in general, Pink Floyd was the first one that I got into when I heard The Wall album in its entirety. That's what definitely switched me on to being a Pink Floyd fan. Pink Floyd seem to be the perfect band to pay tribute to considering their unique catalog of recognizable songs, revered deep cuts and classic albums. It is difficult to think of another band that sort of fits the bill in the same way. They were genuinely unique in that respect. You know, you get Beatles tribute bands, Led Zeppelin tribute bands, whatever - and it's never quite the same for me, because when you get a Beatles show there's always that sort of, almost, obligation to sort of put on the Sgt. Pepper costume or the mop-top for the early era - and go down that road as sort of look-alikes. Which is very well done by a lot of these bands; they're very entertaining. But it's a different sort of thing in my head. There's still something that you can take seriously in that sense about Pink Floyd's music even if it's a tribute band if they're putting it on in the right way. It's a pretty strong word to use, but there's a sort of gravitas attached to their music in my opinion. And it justifies being in the big spaces, in the big halls and arenas and what have you. It's sort of made to inhabit those sorts of stages in my opinion. Whereas someone who's trying to look like Robert Plant or Freddie Mercury if you're doing a Queen tribute band - it's just not the same.

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters is obviously still performing but has gotten quite political with his shows of late. Do you find that some fans gravitate to Brit Floyd to avoid his heavy-handed message? I mean...for example, at the moment we perform "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" - you know, the finale tracks from Dark Side of the Moon. And Pink Floyd back in the day when it came to the sort of video they showed with those tracks, there was a bit of a political message. It wasn't directed at...whether it be in the U.S., Republicans vs. Democrats - it was just politicians in general all sort of tarred with the same brush. So we sort of follow that same sort of philosophy, but we're not singling out Trump or Obama or Clinton or whatever. Everybody gets the same treatment as far as I'm concerned. Have you considered doing of tour of strictly early material to cater to the hardcore Pink Floyd fan? We've toyed with the notion of doing, like, an unplugged sort of thing - more acoustic. And I think some of the older stuff lends itself to that more so than the huge sort of production numbers of the later period. So that's not beyond the realm of possibility. But you have to understand that it is sort of catering to a hardcore fan, so you're not necessarily going to fill as big a space doing that. Speaking of the early material, the original Syd Barrett-led incarnation of the band remains quite polarizing. Some fans love that period while others find it relatively unlistenable. What's your take? It is a difficult question, because it was quite literally a different band then under the stewardship of Syd Barrett with the sort of songs he was writing. But, by the same token, you always have to acknowledge that there would be no Pink Floyd if it wasn't for Syd Barrett. He's the one who principally set something in motion and obviously inspired some of their most iconic songs afterwards, you know, like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Wish You Were Here" to a certain extent. Even The Wall has echoes of Syd Barrett in it as well. So, he's very important. Finally, from your perspective, why does the music of Pink Floyd continue to influence so many artists and bands after all these years? You know, it's very accessible music. You don't actually need to be a virtuoso musician to play it, but you do need to have sensitivity as a musician - the right sort of feel. We're talking about musicians' appreciation of it, not the general public. I can understand why lots of musicians find it extremely attractive to play this music. It doesn't get boring and you don't have to push yourself as a guitarist and become Yngwie Malmsteen or Joe Satriani to cope with the songs. But it's also interesting in terms of the sonic side of things. You know, David Gilmour was such a pioneer when it came to using effects. He was a blues guitarist but wasn't afraid to experiment with all the technology that was coming along at the time, so it's a very interesting soundscape to be given the challenge of creating as well - not just in the guitar realm but across the board. And there's obviously some wonderfully interesting lyrics as well that Roger Waters is responsible for. The whole package is just wonderful music to get the chance to play. FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH & SHINEDOWN FOR D CEN TER | M AY 1 7 | 6 P.M .

Multi-platinum rock bands co-headlining one of the summer's biggest tours

It's officially time to rock again in the tri-state. After a long, cold winter and dreary start to spring, the announcement of the return of Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown to the Ford Center came like a serious breath of fresh air. More than ever, we could all use a heavy blast of metal to clear the cobwebs. Thankfully, two of the genre's biggest bands have joined forces once again to light a fire under everyone on May 17. Featuring drummer Jeremy Spencer - who grew up just 30 minutes outside of Evansville in Oakland City Five Finger Death Punch remain titans of the metal world. Debuting with Way of the Fist in 2007, the band has blazed a trail of unrelenting riffs that continue to reverberate and inspire, especially on classic tracks like "Lift Me Up," "The Bleeding," "No One Gets Left Behind" and quite possibly the best cover song of the last decade, "Bad Company." Singer Ivan Moody, always wildly unpredictable, goes all in every time he takes the stage - and channels that rage in the studio, too, as evidenced on the upcoming new album, And Justice For None, out May 18. Ironically, the hugely popular first single, a radical reworking of the Offspring's "Gone Away," highlights his sensitive side as Five Finger Death Punch slow the pace down to a crawl for maximum emotional effect. The video, which has already surpassed 20 million views, only heightens the drama with a military-themed storyline. Co-headliners Shinedown have also been in the metal trenches for years, forming in 2000 and subsequently releasing Leave a Whisper not long after. A modest success by industry standards, the album's sales were eclipsed by the follow-up, Us and Them, which featured two top five singles on the Mainstream Rock Charts, "Save Me" and "I Dare You." But it was 2008's The Sound of Madness that really kick-started the band's career. The multi-platinum release produced no less than six singles, including the crossover hit, "Second Chance," a top 10 smash on the Billboard Hot 100. Two more albums followed in 2012 (Amaryllis) and 2015 (Threat to Survival), each featuring a run of successful singles. Like their tour mates, Shinedown are set to release a new album in May. Preceded by the single "Devil," Attention Attention is reportedly conceptual in nature, "dealing with depicting a human overcoming their negativity through personal struggles to be reborn as a new person." Don't miss Five Finger Death and Shinedown with special guests Starset and Bad Wolves!

But of course, there's so much more to enjoy over the course of four days, including a WWII reenactment, ShrinersFest 5K, Ultimate Air Dogs, beer gardens, live music, talent contest, carnival rides and veteran events. The start of August means it's time for the annual VolksFest at Germania Maennerchor, the second of the organization's big events during festival season. In fact, Maifest is really the appetizer - the party before the par-tay, if you will - that gets everyone primed and ready for this Evansville tradition that draws hundreds and hundreds of people to North Fulton Avenue every summer for three days of German food, music and beer. Lots and lots of beer - the cheapest around, mind you. Of course, you don't have to be German to enjoy all that's on offer at VolksFest - this is a celebration for everyone, regardless of age or background. Indeed, there's always special entertainment for the kids plus a fun Brat Trot 5K and, most importantly, no end of kraut balls. You know you can't get enough! NEWS4U MAY 2018 | BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

SIDETRACK TAVERN

66 4 E . I L L I N OI S S T REET | EVA N S VI LLE, I N D IANA | (8 1 2 ) 4 9 1 -0 0 9 1

Resurrected Evansville bar thriving under new owner, drawing live music fans in Billy Gammon has bar ownership in his blood. The very busy father of two - long the proprietor of north side neighborhood favorite Buck's Tavern - acquired the formerly-defunct Sidetrack Tavern on east Illinois Street a little over a year ago and spent months renovating it from top to bottom before re-opening its doors this February. But his business acumen shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with the Gammon family. In fact, Gammon's mother has been running the 711 Tavern for upwards of 30 years or more. Not to mention that his stepdad previously owned the Sidetrack Tavern before selling it - only to watch it shut down under new leadership. Despite this, Gammon felt confident that he could right the ship. "I thought it had all kinds of potential because of how big it is and the building's only 10 years old," he says. "I didn't want to see it just sitting there, useless." The first order of business was to get the business side of things situated - taxes, liquor license, etc. That all took about six months and then Gammon spent another six months completely renovating the place, putting in quartz countertops for the bar, pool tables, all new bathrooms and - most noticeably very cool lighting. "I came up with the ideas and then worked with an electrician to see whether they would work or not," he says, clearly pleased with how everything turned out. And so are all the patrons that have been packing Sidetrack on weekends since it reopened. Unlike the prior owner, Gammon is intent on creating a live music venue with popular local bands booked on Saturday nights. "I wanted to get a younger crowd and draw people from all over the tri-state," he says. "I have my regulars that come in and

22 |

then you'll see different people that follow the bands. It's a great crowd; I love them." And it's often a capacity crowd for the likes of dance-oriented cover band Tastes Like Chicken and the heavier rock of Nocturnal. Still, the overflow of people doesn't faze the ace bartending crew that Gammon has assembled. "No one waits for drinks," he says. And if you're hungry, Sidetrack serves up pizza from Una-Tu and wings from the Old Fashioned Butcher Shoppe, both neighborhood businesses that Gammon is only happy to partner with and support. Down the road, maybe in a year or so, he hopes to put in a kitchen and expand the food options at the bar. But everything in good time. While both Buck's Tavern and the 711 Tavern allow smoking, Sidetrack is smokefree - a "no-brainer" for Gammon in terms of drawing a big weekend crowd. For those that need a periodic nicotine fix, there's a big covered beer garden outside. Still, in terms of drawing a day crowd, it presents a challenge. "That's harder to get," admits Gammon. "There aren't a lot of day drinkers out there and our no-smoking policy probably hurts us." But he's certainly going all in with radio, social media and magazine advertising to help spread the word. In addition to live music on Saturdays, Sidetrack offers up karaoke on Thursdays and Fridays feature Mix Master Jones Capone. And beginning in May, Gammon plans to start a bike night on Fridays. Stay tuned for more details and be sure to check out the tri-state's newest hangout!

NEWS4U MAY 2018 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

GD RITZY'S 601 N GREEN RIVER ROAD | EVANSVILLE, IN | (812) 474-6259

G.D. Ritzy’s is a name few Evansvillians aren’t familiar with, but one whose history might not be as well known. Started in 1980 by former Wendy’s executive Graydon Webb in Columbus, Ohio, today the chain's most profitable locations are in Owensboro, Kentucky, Huntington, West Virginia, and right here in Evansville. I recently visited the east side location across from Eastland Mall. Since so many are familiar with the restaurants staples thin-patty hamburgers with crisp edges and shoestring fries - I wanted to focus on things people might not be as familiar with. Onion rings may be something many have tried at this longrunning diner, but I surprisingly never had. With a fresh and crisp whole - not diced - onion slice at its center, this beerbattered side is a cut above that which you might find at other diners and serves as a nice alternative to the thin fries we all know and love. Their chili is also a first rate add-on to your dining experience; as someone who grew up on Cincinnati Reds games and Skyline Chili dinners afterwards, my standards are quite high. Even so, I can confidently say their 5-way chili consisting of beans, onions, cheese, spaghetti, and (of course) chili - holds its own against those hearty heavyweights. There are few - if any - things I feel qualified to call “World’s Best.” So while I may not be able to verify that their “World’s Greatest PB&J” is, indeed, the greatest, I will attest that it’s easily the best I’ve ever had. With sliced strawberries,

24 |

strawberry jam, peanut butter, and diced peanuts atop two thick slices of white bread, it’s not just for kids. Ice cream is one thing I need no persuasion to indulge in (and given they were once voted #1 Chocolate Ice Cream in America, how could I resist?), and their summer tagline of “Don’t forget the ice cream!” certainly didn’t help. I sampled both their Oreo sundae and milkshake.. Their Oreo ice cream is made from a base that consists of actual Oreos, and I can vouch that large chunks of the two-tone cookie are found in each. The fact that their small-batch ice creams can be incorporated into any milkshake makes for nearly endless combinations of flavors. Whether you’re new to the brand or a lifelong patron, stop in and grab a bite today! - Jonathan Gluff *Visit the other Evansville locations at 4320 N. First Ave. and 4810 University Dr. For more info, visit G.D. Ritzy's on Facebook.

NEWS4U MAY 2018 | CUISINE & DINING

IN THE KITCHEN

with Chef Amanda Hancock

Any time during my childhood and early adult life, I have thought of zucchini as a fried food. It wasn’t until I started cooking more at home and eventually going to culinary school to figure out that it can be tasty other ways. I began to roast it and use it in my stir-fry until I found a recipe that melts it into a sauce. I was skeptical at first, but really learned to enjoy it! The longer you cook the zucchini, the more it will break down. Trust me, it can be done very wrong, but when it’s done right, it becomes a silky, smooth sauce. It will give off enough water to cook your asparagus and peas in it. It will get finished with some fresh heirloom cherry tomatoes, fresh garlic, chives and a hint of mint. By adding some lemon juice and minced mint leaves, it will bring out the true meaning of spring! Find more recipes on Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book: The Best is Yet to Come

Cook covered for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add asparagus, peas, and ¾ cup of water and bring to a simmer over mediumhigh heat. Cover and cook until the asparagus is crisp-tender. Add the vegetable mixture, chives, lemon juice, and remaining 2 TBS of olive oil to the pasta and toss to combine. Transfer to a serving dish sprinkle with the Pecorino cheese and drizzle the remaining oils over the dish. Finish by spooning the tomatoes and their juices over the dish. Sprinkle with the fresh mint. Just make it taste good!

STEVE BRIDGMON Owensboro native named New Artist of the Year at the ICMA Awards

As we reported last month, Owensboro native Steve Bridgmon was up for two ICMA (Inspirational Country Music Association) awards on April 5 at the Grand Ole Opry. The longtime leader of the Firm Foundation Quartet seemed a lock for Inspirational Country Song of the Year based on the overwhelming success of "Angels By Another Name" from his highly successful debut album, The Ride, but ultimately lost out to two big talents - Buddy Jewell ("I'm There") and Jeff Bates ("Judging Judas"). Yes, it was a tie. Still, Bridgmon walked away with the coveted New Artist of the Year award, a sure sign that he is going places in the Inspirational Country Music genre. Perhaps most exciting of all, Bridgmon premiered "You Can Always Come Home," a duet with Allie Colleen, the daughter of country superstar Garth Brooks. The pair's touching performance of the brand new radio single was a real highlight of the broadcast and all signs point to the song reaching the top of the charts just like "Angels." But all of the fanfare at the ICMA Awards was just a part of Bridgmon's incredibly busy week as he also jetted to Los Angeles to sing the national anthem before the Lakers took to the court at the Staples Center. Amazingly, it was the second time he's performed at the famed venue in front of a huge crowd dotted with stars. As Bridgmon tells it, just prior to taking center stage back in 2013, legendary actor Jack Nicholson leaned over and offered some excellent advice: "Don't screw it up." The way things are going for Bridgmon, he may well be rubbing elbows with the world's biggest entertainers more often than not. But he's ready for whatever life has in store. STORIES FROM THE STAGE featuring Ed Sein

An ongoing series featuring tri-state musicians

performing a special tribute of their own.

There’s a shiny, new casino that stands in a place where many memories - the good, the bad, the ugly, and the mostly hazy were created on the riverfront in downtown Evansville. It was a place where musicians rocked, karaoke kings and queens belted, Halloween costume contestants paraded, DJs mixed, and, on “Thong Thursdays,” young ladies danced in a contest that was often quite “cheeky.” These illustrious yet often infamous stars graced the stage at the former hot spot known as Fast Eddy’s, where the hometown, hard rock favorite was Gonzo’s Toybox. One of the longest running bands in the tri-state, Gonzo’s performed more nights than they could count in clubs throughout the region. News4U met up with Ed Sein, their former guitar player/backup singer, on that very site (now Tropicana’s 421 Bar) to talk about some memorable moments from the stage. One particular Fourth of July show at Fast Eddy’s stood out.

“There were a lot of service people in uniform, and we had worked up the song “There Goes My Hero” by the Foo Fighters. It was a packed house. We got up on stage and our friend, Scott Ling, who is a career Naval guy, was there (with) at least eight to ten other people who were serving and we got them on stage. We did this song and it was this awesome moment. They stayed on stage throughout the song. It was awesome paying tribute to our friends and neighbors, everyone singing along in the chorus.”

It was in 2011, and the Evansville waterfront was soaring with American pride as the Blue Angels put on their precision aerial display in celebration of our freedom and our nation’s servicemen and women. Inside Fast Eddy’s, Ed and the boys were planning on PHOTO: CHELSEA ELAINE CASANOVA

Sein says magic moments like this are what makes performing so unique. Music as therapy and bonding and healing is what gives Ed a more profound sense of gratification no dollar can represent. “Our experiences as performers have given us a sense of community that is rarely afforded to those in other professions. The sense of fellowship I have from working with so many musicians is a gift that my younger self could not have imagined. No one tells you it’s harder to make friends when you get older. Life and family make it a challenge for us all, don't they?"

Ed is the quintessential working musician and textbook rock star. He's got the chops, the vibe, the sound, the hair, and the right amount of mid-solo stank face that lets you know he is wholly committed to his craft. Ed also has a great deal of class. He admitted:

PHOTO: ALEX MORGAN

"The first thing that (came) to mind about the life in bars and playing music is that there are plenty of stories, but they're not all suitable for, uh, uh, (laughs) all audiences. Plenty of NSFW.”

Ed may or may not have told a story or two from the file we will politely call “Unexpected Body Parts, Functions and Impacts.” For the awkward, gruesome, or salacious, you’ll need to catch up with Ed in one of his many diverse projects on stages in and around Evansville. Ed is a member of the Indy R&B/Soul band Factor Primo, rock band Nocturnal, and female-led, rock and pop band Roulette Ready. Ed also hosts a video blog with Moore Music called “Perfect Pairings” and shares many thoughtful opinions on his Facebook page. - Lindsey James Williams

BLOOD MOON PICTURES Bloody good: Owensboro film production company expanding its reach in the horror genre Over the last few years, writer/director/producer PJ Starks has emerged as a leader in regional film - as well as a player in the national scene - via Blood Moon Pictures, an Owensborobased production company known for the highly successful horror anthology Volumes of Blood (2015) and its even gorier sequel, Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories (2016). Both received critical praise from such trusted sources as Dread Central and HorrorHound, resulting in national distribution in various formats an incredible achievement for two movies made on a RECENT PROJECTS INCLUDE: shoestring budget far away from the bright lights of BUTCHER THE BAKERS Hollywood. The success - recently released on VOD of the anthologies has CLOSE CALLS allowed Starks to network - festival circuit and form partnerships with fellow filmmakers in the 10/31 horror genre, often acting as - festival circuit executive producer to help E-DEMON projects get off the ground. - completed/distribution "Marketing and promotion is ANGEL what I excel in - when you're - post production, in the indie sector and you premieres in Lexington in July don't have thousands for marketing, the hardest part MANIAC FARMER is getting the word out," - premiered in Lexington on March 30th he explains. In addition to CRYPTIDS assisting with marketing - currently filming and promotion, Starks often I SEE YOU helps with script doctoring, - preproduction creative advising and securing distribution. Phipps - a real star in the making. Stylistically, it harkens back to the classic horror movies of the 70s and 80s with slow-burn pacing and creepy, psychological scares. "It was the first project that got my foot in the door in terms of branching out and producing other people's films," Starks says. "I offered the director some advice on his struggles working within the film industry. The movie's really well made, and it's getting rave reviews." Also of note is 10/31, a Halloween-themed anthology that Starks not only executive produced but also has a cameo in (find it at your local Family Video). Near the bottom of that impressive list of projects is the final installment of the Volumes of Blood trilogy, Devil's Knight, currently in the early stages of development but already generating buzz online. "I posted something on Facebook that we were discussing what the third film should be about and Arrow in the Head (a top horror movie site) screen-shot my post and put in on their site as news," Starks recalls, clearly humbled by the attention. With a script now completed - a true collaborative effort between Starks, Jason Turner, Ginna Campbell and Jerrod Brito - the project can move forward to the next phase. But unlike the previous anthology, Devil's Knight will not be rushed to meet a selfimposed deadline. "That's one of the things I learned from the last film - I said the premiere was going to happen at the end of October, so when it came to financing the film, we didn't have all the money before we started shooting," Starks says. "And of course that created stress. We were worried if we could finish the film." But as the many fans of VOB: Horror Stories know,

NEWS4U MAY 2018 | WRITER

it all worked out in the end. Still, the Blood Moon gang intends to avoid the same money pitfalls and "go out with a bang" for the final installment - which means bigger set pieces and name actors and directors. Budgeting for the amped up production will be secured through crowdfunding, branding/product placement, private investors and even the selling off of items and set pieces from the first two anthologies. The completion of Devil's Knight will hold even more significance for Starks due to his son Logan's recent Autism diagnosis. He and Blood Moon Pictures co-owner Eric Huskisson have decided to donate a percentage of the film's proceeds to an Autism support organization to aid families in need. As for the original VOB and VOB: Horror Stories, the latter continues to find an audience online in VOD format on Amazon and other sites while Starks is in talks to get the former back in distribution. In fact, both films may soon be released internationally, an ideal scenario for Blood Moon. "The Asian and European markets just eat up American horror movies," he says. Despite Devil's Knight being touted as the final installment of the VOB series, the opportunity for spinoffs and storylines derived from the anthologies exists. In fact, Blood Moon's next project will most likely center around a script Starks wrote a while back that he's found a way to tie into the VOB universe. In the meantime, he and Huskisson will continue to promote Blood Moon's table top card game based on the Volumes of Blood anthologies and network with fellow filmmakers. All of this activity at Blood Moon has truly put the company on the film industry's radar - so much so that Starks was tapped to appear in a UK-produced retrospective documentary about John Carpenter's Halloween set for release in October. Rest assured it will be bloody good. For more info, visit facebook.com/vobanthology or facebook.com/ UnscriptedXperience.

"Clara"

A Short Story By John Thurgood

We couldn't tell our parents, because we didn't want them to know we had been sneaking around the old Danberry house, but we just knew the place was haunted. It had sat empty for a full year after the Danberrys moved out. We watched from across the street as realtor after realtor led family after family up the winding brick walkway to the front door and through the two-story Edwardian masterpiece that sat at the end of our cul-de-sac. It was the only house on the block with a basement, and we wondered what other exceptions it held within. When the Heumanns moved in, we figured it would only last a little while. We predicted the worst. From what we knew about horror films and ghost stories, we pictured a bloodbath of otherworldly potential, but after four months of hanging around the cul-de-sac and lurking in the knuckled roots at the treeline of their backyard, we feared that the Heumanns weren't victims at all, but instead the type of Satan worshiping clan that sought after houses like the old Danberry house for its loose proximity to the darker dimensions. Clara was their oldest daughter, and we knew she was evil that first day of school. She wandered the baseline out in the baseball diamond during lunch, not really talking to anyone those first few months. Her face carried with it a trauma we couldn't understand at the time. We mistook her independence as something dangerous, and so we immediately began picking away at it, calling her names, stealing her food and vandalizing her personal items. Each time, after everything we did, no matter how disrespectful we were, she made sure to look us each in the eye, a single quiet glance, before turning and walking away. It wasn't until high school that we realized that we needed Clara. In the social shift that happened between middle school and high school, as new identities washed over us all, we started seeing Clara differently. We started seeing her through the eyes of strangers. Sophomores were hanging around her locker. All social groups seemed to include her and appreciate her opinion. And Jim Thompson began walking her home. We saw her one day after school, sitting on some bleachers, wearing a crown of dandelions and laughing with Jim. She looked so happy and content, all we could muster was a wave from across the lawn. She waved to us in return, and it occurred to us then that we had feared Clara Heumann from the very beginning not because she was evil but because she was beautiful.

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

POPPY & HOPPY HOUDINI

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

ALLIE: Allie is an 11-year-old female dilute tortoiseshell cat. She is VERY sweet, but she is also shy and needs a quieter home to thrive. Senior kitties like her are some of the most vulnerable animals in shelters. The stress of such a big life change can cause them to stop eating and lose weight. She’ll need a patient, observant family who can give her all the time she needs to adjust! She’s already spayed, vaccinated, and ready to go home for $40.

SPOT: Spot is a 5-year-old male mixedbreed dog. He has unfortunately had an unstable life and really deserves a good home! In one of his more recent homes, he was discovered to be living on a chain pretty much full-time. He’s ready to be someone’s spoiled inside pupper. His $110 adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, and vaccines and he’s ready to go home TODAY!

There are animal lovers and then there's Jodi Strauss. The longtime west-sider grew up on 10 acres of land with a virtual menagerie of furry friends, including cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters and horses, plus the always present array of deer, raccoons, opossums - you name it. After moving out on her own, she reportedly adopted cats, dogs and ferrets and then eventually headed to the far west side to assist her mother who now lives on a seven acre farm with - you guessed it - all manner of animals. Strauss soon found herself tending to the daily needs of chickens, pigs, a donkey and more cats and dogs - and loving every minute of it. So much so that last year about this time she considered getting a couple of goats but instead opted for rabbits after stopping off at the VHS to donate some items to their store. "I was just going to get one but the boy that I was playing with was part of a litter and so I asked to see his sister, too," Strauss says. "She was kind of the runt, smaller in size. So I just decided to get two!" Poppy and Hoppy have been living on the farm for about a year now, housed in an air-conditioned garden shed but soon Strauss intends to introduce them to all their new furry friends and transition them to an indoor/outdoor pen that will allow them more freedom. Another successful adoption!

HIROSHI: Hiroshi is an 8-month-old female Dutch rabbit. She would do well in a home with older kids or more bunny-experienced kids. Remember to always adopt, and never buy bunnies from stores! Hiroshi’s $40 adoption fee includes her includes spay and microchip.

THE WRITE STUFF

ASK THE PASTOR with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

CAN PEOPLE OF FAITH “BELIEVE” IN SCIENCE?

Faith and science have often been perceived as being in conflict. The classic conflict is seen in the very first story of the Bible. The old “creation versus evolution” argument is held up and the claim is made that you cannot be a Christian if you believe in creation. My response to that challenge is that the Bible is not a science book. In fact, science (as we know it) wasn’t even around when the Bible was being written. So, to claim that the Bible is against science is pretty hard to defend. The Bible didn’t even know what science was. When I recite the traditional creeds of the Church, I say “I believe in God…the Creator of heaven and earth.” Nowhere in scripture does anyone ever attempt to say how God did that. The classic story of Genesis (chapter 1) is that God spoke the creation into existence. Okay. If someone called a press conference tomorrow and conclusively proved every detail of the theory of evolution, it wouldn’t cause me to stop believing in God, nor would it prevent me from saying, “I believe in God…the Creator of heaven and earth.” Faith and science are both gifts of God. I suggest we enjoy them both.

with Jonathan Gluff Technical Difficulties (Or “The Controller Becomes the Controlled”) Confession time: I’m a bit of an obsessive tech nerd with a particular penchant for smartphones. I painstakingly pore over every detail about the upcoming latest and greatest devices, and am an elitist to an almost annoying degree about operating systems, openness, and security. And while scaling back on being a bit, shall we say, too vocal about my preferences is one thing I pride myself on drastically improving upon recently, having a phone that can endure my rigorous demands with speed and ease is still of utmost importance to me. Unfortunately, mine went missing Saturday morning. Luckily, I already had a contingency plan in place. I’d even switched carriers a couple of years ago to one with more freedom of choice just in case this ever happened. (I promise I can bore you for extended periods of time on this subject.) After the wave of dread and panic - and an insurance claim call - subsided, I Googled where I could buy the best inexpensive phone I’d selected long ago. After quick trips to my carrier’s store for a new SIM card and then to buy the phone, I popped in the new card and off I went. I wasn’t expecting much from this $130 device (especially compared to the

$700-1,000 full retail price of most phones), but I have to say I was impressed; it ran circles around the highest-end devices from just 4-5 years ago. Technology increases at an exponential rate; that is while leaps and bounds in progress occur for quite some time, it eventually plateaus and change becomes more gradual. So I was shocked at just how far things had come in such a short period of time. But this got me thinking: Should we be careful with our deployment of technology? Sure, there’s the oftrepeated trope of us becoming too engrossed with our smart devices (which quickly devolves into “Back in my day…” clichés), but what about increasing reliance on automation? More and more laborers are losing their jobs - especially in the manufacturing sector - to robots, and we may soon have to take a serious look at options like arbitrarily limiting automated replacement of human labor or universal basic income. And are we being lulled into a false sense of security with the convenience these handheld computers give us? But luckily, my new device arrived already… what were my fears, again?

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE with Marisa Patwa

Blockbuster Movie Season Begins With summer just around the corner, blockbuster movie season is upon us, starting with Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out this month. Deadpool 2 is sure to be a hit, especially after the raunchy first movie made hundreds of millions at the box office. The second installment will be released on May 18 and follows Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson once again in a wild, action-packed, dark-comedy adventure. Information on the new movie is pretty tight-lipped, with even all of the promos and previews featuring a fake plot. According to IMDB, the plot of Deadpool 2 is described as: “After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry's hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover.” Obviously this is not the true plot, more of an incredibly

satirical dramatization of what the actual plot will be about. But rest assured I will be enjoying a fresh bowl of popcorn on May 18 at the theater, desperately waiting for the moment that Ryan Reynolds stares straight at us - breaking the fourth wall - and makes another joke about himself. Next out is Solo: A Star Wars Story which debuts a week later on May 25. This is another standalone Star Wars film in the vein of Rogue One although it does give a backstory to future Star Wars leading man Han Solo. In this version, the young Han Solo is played by Alden Ehrenreich, who you may recognize from Hail, Caesar! and Rules Don’t Apply. The person you’ll really recognize is none other than Khaleesi, queen of the dragons - Emilia Clarke, herself. Clarke has proven herself as an action star in Game of Thrones and Terminator Genisys and I can’t wait to see her kick butt in this new film. Donald Glover also plays a gambler and we get to see how Han Solo and Chewbacca first met - that is a meetcute I never knew I even wanted to see, but now, desperately must. So go check out these guaranteed megahits this May and you’ll be sure to go to sleep dreaming of red latex suits and Millennium Falcons.

TERM LIMITS WOULD BENEFIT EVANSVILLE Councilman Justin Elpers' (R) ordinance to impose term limits - based on the premise that the position of elected official should not be viewed as a career - was narrowly defeated 5-4. One of the nays, Councilman Missy Mosby (D), asserted that terms limits are already imposed. "They're called elections," she stated. That's right in theory. However, what Mosby fails to point out is that incumbents already have built-in advantages such as name recognition, the advantage of fundraising and the backing of the political establishment. In fact, if you look at the councilmen who voted against term limits, a common trend appears. Mosby represents the Democratic 2nd Ward; fellow Democrat Connie Robinson, who's been on the Council since '95, represents the heavily Democratic 4th Ward; Jim Brankmeyer represents the west side's heavily Democratic 6th Ward; Democrat Jonathan Weaver is usually the top vote getter for the At-Large candidates and is almost a shoe-in every election cycle. The Republican party might want to consider using this as a campaign issue for the 2019 election. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will be at the top of the ticket running for a third term; all the GOP has to do is flip one more seat and they will also control the City Council. Councilman Dan Mcginn, an Independent from the 1st Ward who was previously a Republican, voted for term limits. So all it will take is one more vote to have term limits in Evansville. The city would be better for it. The views expressed in the article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of News4U.

THE TITAN 42/AMEL COMPANY

In 2048, war, over-population and environmental collapse have made the planet nearly uninhabitable. The only option, it would seem, is finding a new home for the human race, and in this version of an already overworked scenario the most viable option is Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. The novelty of The Titan is how this migration is going to happen. Instead of manipulating the atmosphere of Titan, scientists have devised a way to manipulate human DNA in order to genetically alter the human race to withstand the harsh environment of its new home. At the crux of this body horror plot, is the relationship between Rick Janssen (Sam Worthington) and his wife Abi (Taylor Schilling). Schilling's performance is the only thing saving what would otherwise be a flat portrayal of a loving couple separated by the call of duty. Her loss and worry build to an inevitable crescendo, but all of her emotional labor is thrown against the shapeshifting stoicism of Worthington's performance. As his chiseled body mutates into a hairless sea creature a la The Shape of Water, he meets the experience as if he were watching the water drain from a hot bath, and in addition to this blasé emotional arc, the slow build of the medical and research procedure that Janssen endures is overwrought and ultimately nonsensical. By the time we as viewers make it to the final scene it bears asking, “What was the point?” - John Thurgood

GAME OVER, MAN! POINT GREY PICTURES

In an alternate reality, the trio from Workaholics are on staff at a fancy hotel, where they mostly clean rooms, but also might be waiters - it's unclear. But what is clear throughout the movie is that Alexxx, Darren and Joel don't care about their jobs in the slightest. They stumble through the first few scenes of the movie pushing the limits of absurd comedy, including a scene with a used condom that will make you cringe and laugh out loud. The rest of the movie is not much different. In a plot that parodies Die Hard and The Spy Who Knew Too Little, the trio find themselves in the middle of an elaborate takeover, where a group of deadly henchmen led by Neal McDonough as Conrad, a Kangol wearing over-thetop villain a la Hans Gruber, holds everyone in the hotel hostage until a billionaire social-media influencer, Bey Awadi (Utharsh Ambudkar), known as “The Bey,” gives up the access code to his secret account of vast capital. As is expected, the trio of bumbling hotel staff pool their courage and through mishap after mishap manage to out-wit their assailants with a series of grotesque and raunchy stunts. The main driving force behind Game Over, Man! is “Skintendo,” a full-body game console that Alexxx, Darren and Joel are trying to get funding for in order to move it into development. They end up risking it all to get their idea to “The Bey,” and in the process run through a Rube Goldberg machine of dick jokes and blood, which all in all is well worth the time. - John Thurgood

BLUES WITH BRAGIN MICHELLE MALONE Slings & Arrows SBS Records

Slings & Arrows begins with the track “Just Getting Started” which sets the tone well for the rest of the album. In addition to Malone’s poignant lyrics about working hard to change the world, her guitar playing on the song fits well. The song “Sugar on My Tongue,” a collaboration of Malone and Eliot Bronson, discusses love. The music, including electric guitar work from Peter Stroud, seems eerily reminiscent of the Rolling Stones classic, “Beast of Burden.” Malone’s acoustic guitar shines through on “Beast’s Boogie” and also showcases her harmonica playing skills for the first time on the album. A cover of the Otis Redding ballad “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” contains soulful vocals from Malone as well as a guest appearance from 90's rocker Shawn Mullins. “Fox and the Hound,” a collaboration between Malone and Randall Bramblett, starts off slower but picks up steam as the song progresses with Malone’s masterful guitar playing. Malone’s gritty vocals in “Matador” lend a nice quality to a track that sounds like a rock song from the late 20th century. Another collaboration with Eliot Bronson, “The Flame” sounds like a nice cross between a classic country song and more modern country with timeless lyrics. For more info, visit MichelleMalone.com. - Paul Bragin

STEVEN TROCH Rhymes for Mellow Minds Sing My Title Rhymes for Mellow Minds opens with “The Short End” which allows guitarist Steven Van Der Nat’s guitar to take center stage and boasts a vintage sound that reminds listeners of the 1960s. Troch’s harmonica starts off “Bad Taste,” a song with a mixed Latin and European feel to it. The instrumental “Going to Dagobah” really allows Troch’s harmonica skills to shine. The whole band performs well on “Long Long Beard,” a country blues song that sounds like a Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson tune. The 1950s guitar in “White Line Express” transports listeners to a sock hop or malt shop. The old scratchy record sound at the beginning of “15 Minutes” quickly changes to a great jazz/blues song about a man down on his luck. Erik Heirman’s pounding drums kick off “Vertigo,” a far-out track with a lot of distortion, from the vocals to the guitar. The slow blues ballad “Bedroom Eyes” maintains a classic blues feel and features Troch singing about true love. Troch’s harmonica fits in well with “Rain Rain,” a song that discusses the hardships of becoming an adult. DEADMAU5 where’s the drop? mau5trap Where’s the drop? It’s on the digital equivalent to Beats by Dre. That’s right, Deadmau5’s newest album is only available on Tidal (and mau5trap’s website for the same price), though I have heard it’s coming to the usual streaming services sometime soon. where’s the drop is a play on the core concept of the album: deadmau5 partnered with composer Gregory Revert to re-imagine songs from his 7 album as orchestral arrangements. It’s a shame this album is so focused on audio quality, including limited exclusivity to a lossless streaming service, as most fans will be listening with earbuds and <$50 Bluetooth speakers. This album is one of the few times in life I truly wish I had an expensive pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Something expensive with terms like “tonal quality” plastered all over the packaging. Tried-and-true favorites of Deadmau5’s catalog breath new life when presented orchestrally. "Coelacanth" with a synthetic choir backing the strings haunts me. It’s the kind of music that begs the listener to wrap themselves in it, to fully experience the sound instead of listening in the background while doing dishes. - Gavin Gaddis

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Stone Temple Pilots Rhino Entertainment Call me old-fashioned, but if your band has been around for multiple decades you’ve lost the opportunity to release a self-titled album. I get it, Stone Temple Pilots fired lead singer Scott Weiland in 2013 and are trying to debut the band with Jeff Gutt in a similar fashion to a post-Mercury Queen. Stone Temple Pilots is so Pilots it feels almost like they’re pretending they’re relaunching the band, and that’s not inherently a bad thing. In that regard the album is a success. They seem to want to deliver the Stone Temple Pilots-iest album they could right out of the gate with the new frontman and pull it off in spades. Gutt brings a similar energy and vibe to his vocals that Weiland had. Quite frankly, as someone who was only aware of the Pilots on the periphery of what I listened to, I didn’t notice the lead singer was a different person until looking up some other details about the album. Once again, I find myself reviewing a famous band’s album by saying the following: If you liked their previous work, this is just more of it. No more, no less. - Gavin Gaddis

JACK WHITE Boarding House Reach Columbia

HAWK Bomb Pop Self-Released

Boarding House Reach is Jack White’s third solo album, at least if you don’t count the 24 other musicians credited for backing tracks, vocals, and instrumental work. From the first track that presents itself as some strange pseudo-gospel track, Reach ensures the listener things are about to get weird. Intentionally lo-fi recordings, wacky lyrical choices, sudden genre shifts. To properly explain this album, I need to discuss The Beatles. That band revolutionized music by perfectly mixing safe, poppy lyrics with a subversive stream of experimentation. For a thought experiment, let’s pretend Paul McCartney was the family-friendly pop-rocker and John Lennon was the edgy experimental auteur.

It takes several songs for Hawk featuring Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), Gary Louris (The Jayhawks) and Ken Stringfellow (Posies, REM, Big Star) to find a groove on their new album, Bomb Pop. When I listened to the first few tracks, especially “I Lied,” I almost wondered if this was a joke album. The scratchy and somewhat out-of-tune vocals, combined with questionable lyrics like, “I could’ve told more of the truth,” had all the makings of one. But about halfway through, Bomb Pop takes a turn for the better, with the retro instrumental feel of "Mrs. Anderson" and creative lyrics of "Around the Sun" saving Hawk’s latest venture from disaster.

Boarding House Reach is what happens when Jack White lets his inner Lennon take over the driver's seat with Yoko Ono feeding directions along the way. It’s weird, it doesn’t even sound good vocally or musically at times. I had a hard time keeping my attention on the music itself. There are hints that a musical talent is trying to make something cool, but… I dunno. Perhaps this is the album for the biggest Jack White fan, the person who wants to hear him go all-out. I respect the act of not resting on one’s laurels, but it simply doesn't play for me. -- Gavin Gaddis

Even in these later tracks, there are a few problems. First, the entire album suffers from repetitiveness, both lyrically and instrumentally. The tracks end up sounding very similar to each other, which is unfortunate, because the instrumentation is very good, especially the guitar and drums. It is disappointing that this kind of talent was not given enough of a range for it to truly shine. However, the album is nothing if not fun. Some of Bomb Pop's flaws can be overlooked simply because it’s difficult to be in a bad mood when listening to it. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.

INVISIBLE INC. Fine Print Steel Wool / EMPIRE Invisible Inc. is to George Watsky as Richard Bachman is to Stephen King. It’s impossible to talk about the former without recognizing it as a vehicle for the latter. A band with only one album released just before Watsky went solo a decade ago, Invisible Inc. has popped back to life by suddenly dropping Fine Print on its tenth birthday. I’m so glad it did. Fine Print is a delicious blend of a time capsule from Watsky’s early days of fast-rapping over pre-existing beats and his current, more collaborative work. The other members of Invisible Inc. have been in the credits of every album Watsky has put out in the past decade; everyone is close enough to perfectly mesh, something invaluable on an experimental project such as this. It’s damn good hip-hop served up with a side of experimental beats and crazy editing choices that somehow work in the end. In reviewing music long enough it’s easy to tell when an album is phoned in, and when it’s a passion project. Every track of Fine Print screams of passion, of excitement to express oneself through music. This is already a strong contender for my favorite album of the year. - Gavin Gaddis

LILYER Maybe This Is All You Can Be Self-Released On a technical level, Lilyer’s debut EP is one of the best I’ve heard recently. There is only one note in the entire four song EP that vocalist Marte Solbakken doesn't hit with almost clinical precision, which says quite a bit considering the songs cover several octaves. Each one has just the right mix of synth, guitar, and drum riffs, providing creative, varied, yet minimalistic background instrumentation throughout. The lyrics and rhyme structures are simple, but that seems to have been the goal. However, the EP’s goal of minimalism is more of a detriment than a credit to it. Because of its simplicity, Maybe This Is All You Can Be sounds more like background noise than something to focus all of one’s attention on, which is unfortunate because quite a bit of emotion and effort clearly went into the EP’s creation. Solbakken also falls into some of the traps common among indie singers, including over-enunciation and other vocal gimmicks that are meant to interest the listener, but come off as trite. Still, Lilyer has created a solid EP that promises continued improvement. - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • MAY 2018

MAY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. URBAN UNDERDOG AMERICAN LAGER

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.25

Urban Chestnut is a St. Louis brewery. This one’s a craft lager that pours a less than perfectly clear honey color with a quick to disappear cream-colored head. The nose is dominated by malts, grains and crackers. The accompanying taste reflects the aroma with a mouthfeel that is mild and smooth with a little hopinfused bitter kiss on the finish. It comes in one of those pint cans that opens fully at the top and creates its own “glass”. I enjoyed it.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A decent white head tops this lager after pouring it into a pilsner glass. The smell boasts a good balance of malt and hop presence. The carbonation from the beer hits the tongue first, followed by the tug of war between malt and hops in the long finish. This could serve as a good introduction for someone new to craft beer. Pair it with roasted street corn or a spicy dish like Nashville hot chicken.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear straw-colored beer. I think how it opens is pretty neat as the top pulls off to make a large opening. I wish it was better tasting but it's your standard Lager and has a bit of a “skunky” taste to it. I'm not sure of the cost but for a cheap beer, it's ok; however, I wouldn’t spend too much on it.

DOGFISH HEAD DRAGONS & YUM YUMS

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.5

In the brewer's words: “Dragons & YumYums is an intensely tropical - yet subtly bitter - pale ale brewed with a combination of dragon fruit, yumberry, passion fruit, pear juice and black carrot juice.” It pours up a clear “dusty rose pink” with a lot of fizzy bubbles racing from the bottom, a faintly pinkish airy head and a lot of lacing. The nose is fruity with subtle pale yeast and even more subtle hop notes. The taste is very different - almost like a carbonated fruit tea with some pale ale traits blended in. It’s actually pretty nice and knowing Dogfish Head, I believe that without a doubt it's brewed with real and natural ingredients. It has a light, drinkable mouthfeel and would make a great summer refresher.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A thick white head forms on this beer with a pink tint. The scent contains a generous amount of sweet fruit notes. The fruit notes continue with the first sip of the beer, but with a more sour bite. This beer could rise in popularity during the summer. It could serve as the base of a punch, or pair it with fruity desserts. Because of the variety of flavors, it might pair well with a variety of cuisines.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a light rose-colored beer. I'm not sure if I've ever had a dragon fruit or yumberry. It has an ABV of 6.5% but I couldn't finish it. It has a slight sour finish and as I drank it, it tasted a bit like I was drinking perfume. I was actually thinking about scoring it lower but had to give it a little break due to the choices of interesting flavors.

FIRESTONE LUPONIC DISTORTION

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

This is an IPA that pours up a light golden color and makes a big frothy off white head with lots of lacing. The aroma is very IPA with tropical citrus and piney notes tempered by some English hops as well for a discernibly different touch. The flavor, of course, mostly mimics the nose with a big emphasis on the hops bitterness that many either love or hate. The mouthfeel is on the light side for its genre and it’s very drinkable.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head rests on top of this golden beer and never totally evaporates. The scent of citrus from the hops fills the nose. The hop flavors continue with the first sip of the beer into the long finish. Some malt sweetness helps maintain the flavor balance. People who enjoy hoppy beers will want to try this limited release. It could pair well with fish tacos or a variety of spicy dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear amber-colored beer. It has the standard sweet hops flavor but I like that it's not too overbearing. I also notice that it has a crisp finish and does not coat your tongue with hops bitterness. This beer is a little bit better than average but nothing super.

NEWS4U MAY 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

ANCHOR STEAM BEER found on the web. It pours up a pretty dark copper color with a generous light khaki head. First sniff tells you that it's a lager. Lager yeast has an entirely different aroma. It’s nice. The taste is mostly lightly toasted malts and grains with a smooth, very drinkable mouthfeel. It’s a simple taste experience that comes off pretty nice, actually. Give it a try!

DANIEL KNIGHT - 3.75

This is a beer made via a unique process in the San Francisco area. There’s a whole story and history around it to be

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head crowns this beer when poured into an English pub glass. A generous amount of malt controls the scent profile. The malt continues during

the first tasting, with hop bitterness coming through a moment later and remaining in the long finish. This beer helped revitalize the craft beer movement in the United States during the 1970s, so aficionados will appreciate this pioneer. Pair it with seafood or seasoned poultry.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a clear amber-colored beer. I haven't had this beer in a long time. It has a slight malty flavor and a hint of some spices. I'm sure there are big fans of this beer but I'm just not crazy about it. I would consider it average.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
